- 0:26I'll just run through the preamble of Alcoholics
- 0:29Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous is a
- 0:31fellowship of people who share the experience, strengthen hope
- 0:35with each other that they may solve their common problems and
- 0:39help with us to recover from alcoholism.
- 0:42The only requirement for membership is the desire to stop
- 0:45drinking and no dues of fees. Fair membership.
- 0:48We are self supporting through our own contributions.
- 0:52He is not alive with any sect in omission politics, organization
- 0:57or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy,
- 1:02either endorses or oppose any causes.
- 1:05Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other Alcoholics
- 1:09are chiefs of Brady. Thanks.
- 1:11My name is Maggie. I'm an alcoholic and I am so
- 1:15thrilled to be back in my hometown of Adelaide.
- 1:19I've moved back here from Byron and it's just feels like home.
- 1:26So I'm just going to start with a little piece and it's called
- 1:33the concept of oneness. When I thought, when I think
- 1:40about my 34 years of recovery and I think about my time before
- 1:46that, the one word that comes into my mind is connection.
- 1:51And the one word that comes into my mind when I think about my
- 1:55recovery today and how I practice is that one word,
- 2:00connection. So this is the concept of
- 2:04oneness. close your eyes if you like, while I read this to you.
- 2:08The idea of the concept of oneness is an ancient concept.
- 2:13It's about unity, oneness. So imagine that the ocean is
- 2:18completely limitless. It's one giant being.
- 2:23Imagine the ocean decides to create clones of itself.
- 2:29It makes beautiful little balls of ice, all made-up of the same
- 2:34thing, just frozen into different forms.
- 2:37And these balls forget where they come from and they see
- 2:42themselves as separate, not the same as the other little frozen
- 2:47balls. It's called duality.
- 2:50And all these different little balls live in this world of
- 2:53duality and we as human beings, if I was to melt one of those
- 2:59balls of ice, what would happen? It would melt back into the
- 3:03ocean. So the idea of oneness is that
- 3:06we are all the same with no separation, no difference, just
- 3:12formed into different forms. And the concept of oneness is
- 3:16important when we're in moments of comparison, which is not good
- 3:21enough and self limiting beliefs.
- 3:24And essentially what we're doing in those moments is seeing
- 3:28ourselves as separate. So if you embrace the idea of
- 3:32oneness, there is no separateness, there is no need
- 3:36to compare and there is no not good enough.
- 3:40And it's a beautiful way to manage when we identify with our
- 3:43ego because we are spiritual beings having a human
- 3:48experience. And when in doubt, remember that
- 3:51not good enough or comparison or judging is putting our power
- 3:56outside to other people. When I come back to the idea
- 4:01that I am 1 so there is no not good enough, no judging.
- 4:06When I'm based on what I see externally, to me there is no
- 4:10comparison. And I judge that I am good
- 4:13enough to be that person, that body, that job.
- 4:17I am the one. I am infinite because we're all
- 4:21the same. We just put on different
- 4:23costumes. We look, speak and eat
- 4:26differently. But our purpose is that as
- 4:29spiritual beings, we start to remember who we are.
- 4:33And it's not the getting of earth, it's the living it.
- 4:36So in a nutshell, that's my story.
- 4:39From disconnection to connection.
- 4:42This is lovely little saying that I'll read to you.
- 4:44We each have 86,400 seconds every single day.
- 4:51If we don't use them, we can't save them.
- 4:54My account is cleaned out every night and I need to start again.
- 4:58So day at a time for me has been my belief and my practice for
- 5:0530-4 years. And I have for anyone who's new
- 5:10this little saying sobriety is not a limitation, it's my
- 5:13superpower. And I have this little prayer.
- 5:16Dear God, I have a problem. Me scared child.
- 5:21I haven't asked me. And that and my story.
- 5:26When I I drank, I drank like an alcoholic.
- 5:31I drank like an alcoholic woman. I got into all the terrible
- 5:35strife that alcoholic women get in until one day I had this
- 5:41thought. And that thought was I want to
- 5:44live. And that I want to live became
- 5:48my mantra. And I knew that there was
- 5:52something better. My father was an alcoholic, my
- 5:55grandfather was an alcoholic. I knew what Alcoholics were
- 6:00like. And there came a time when it
- 6:03was enough. And this extraordinary thing
- 6:07happened. I was having a party at my
- 6:09place. It was in Norwood.
- 6:10And, and I invited all these people who I didn't know to come
- 6:15to this party. And I was drunk as usual.
- 6:19And something happened. I gashed my foot on some broken
- 6:22glass. And two people, I had no idea
- 6:26who they were, took me to the hospital.
- 6:29And I remember lying on this doctor's table at the hospital
- 6:34and he looked at this woman, me, with such loathing and disgust.
- 6:39You know, I had cigarette burns on my jacket.
- 6:43I smelt like I hadn't had a bath for a while.
- 6:48And I remember, I still remember his eyes.
- 6:52And I got back into the car with these two people, and I sat in
- 6:56the back seat. And as they were driving me back
- 6:59to my place, these words came to my mind.
- 7:03And that word was I want to live.
- 7:06And I'd never thought I wanted to live before, that I was
- 7:11destroying every part of my life.
- 7:13And the next morning I woke up and I had heard of Alcoholics
- 7:19Anonymous. Thank God I'd heard of
- 7:22Alcoholics Anonymous. And I rang.
- 7:23I found it really difficult to find, to spill that word
- 7:29alcoholic the next morning when I was looking at it in the phone
- 7:32book. And eventually I did.
- 7:35And this Irish woman answered the phone in the AA office and
- 7:40her name was Kate Irish Kate. She said two things to me.
- 7:44She said, Margie, do you think you've got a problem with
- 7:46alcohol? And I said, and she said, are
- 7:49you willing to go to any length to get well?
- 7:53And I said yes. And she picked me up.
- 7:56She said, I'll pick you up tonight and I'll take you to a
- 7:59meeting. And I had no idea what a
- 8:03meeting, what sort of meeting she was talking about, but I
- 8:07dress what I thought was appropriate for an, a, a meeting
- 8:10with the oldest, daggiest clothes that I could think of.
- 8:14She came in her car and it was filled with Irish people.
- 8:19And it was Patty, Dennis, Kate and and a friend of Patty's.
- 8:23I can't remember his name. And I thought to myself as they
- 8:26were driving me, I thought a a must be all about Irish people.
- 8:32And I got to the meeting and she said, sit in intensive care down
- 8:36the front, sat in intensive care.
- 8:39And I heard my story time and time and time again.
- 8:44This was in awe. And you know, I've heard other
- 8:47people say it and it and it is so true that you think to
- 8:52yourself, that must have been eavesdropping.
- 8:55I know my story and thank God, you know, for for Kate.
- 8:59Kate was a gorgeous, flamboyant, over the top Irish woman with
- 9:05these great scarves that she'd wrap around herself in the
- 9:09meetings. She became my first sponsor and
- 9:13she was the sweetest, kindest person.
- 9:17But she didn't really know. And she said when, when my time
- 9:22to do the steps for it came along and I said, Kate, will you
- 9:26take me through the steps? And she's just said, no, I
- 9:29haven't done the steps. And I'd then started looking
- 9:35around and really hear, trying to hear what I needed to hear
- 9:41about the steps. And I found a lot of people or a
- 9:44few people that said they'd take me through the steps and they
- 9:47took me through through the steps.
- 9:50But I didn't get it, you know, I didn't get, I didn't see the
- 9:54point of it. I didn't hear the gods stuff.
- 9:57I didn't understand the gods stuff when I was a bit anti God
- 10:00anyway. And I remember I went to Sydney
- 10:03and I, I went to this great meeting at Bondi, which is on
- 10:07the beach and I stood up from the front of the meeting and I
- 10:10said, I, I can't get God. You know, I've been in AA for, I
- 10:15know, six months or something and, and I just can't get God.
- 10:19And this guy said to me, come out and my combi and I'll talk
- 10:23to you. So I went out to his to the
- 10:25combi and he took me through we agnostics and and then in we
- 10:32agnostics, it tells me how to get from willingness to belief
- 10:36and you know, starting off with a willingness, making a
- 10:41decision, coming to believe and so on.
- 10:45And then he said, now I want you to go out to onto the beach and
- 10:50I want you to walk on the sand. And as you walk on the sand, I
- 10:55want you to think to yourself, could I have created this, this
- 10:59sand that I'm walking on? And he said, come back and tell
- 11:03me the answer. And I knew then there had to be
- 11:07a power greater than myself. And then I came back to Adelaide
- 11:13full of love, I guess, for the fellowship and, and for what I'd
- 11:19gratitude for what I'd learnt and as, and those who know me
- 11:22from that time will know that I became a bit of AI.
- 11:25Don't know quite how to say it. Totally in love with the steps,
- 11:32should I say. And I wanted to be the best
- 11:35sponsor so there ever was. I wanted to be the best student
- 11:39there ever was. And I wanted to have the best
- 11:42recovery there ever was. And in those days, which is 34
- 11:47years ago now, 30 odd years ago, there were these two guys called
- 11:52Joe and Charlie. And in 1970s Joe and Charlie was
- 11:581 was a a black guy and one was a white guy from the states.
- 12:02And, and in those days there, there wasn't a lot of people,
- 12:08you know, really getting together like that.
- 12:11They got together and they studied the big book and they
- 12:15put together these tapes and some of you have been around
- 12:19long enough for remember the Jo and Charlie tapes.
- 12:21So again, being a person that's a little bit full on, I made the
- 12:27decision that I wanted to learn everything there was about the
- 12:32Jo and Charlie tapes. So I took and in those days had
- 12:35a little tape recorder and the Joe and Tally tapes and I took
- 12:39myself off out to the Bush to a little Hut for I think it was
- 12:43four days. I took reams of paper, lots of
- 12:48pens and and so on. And I sat there and I
- 12:53transcribed every single word from all their tapes.
- 12:57And then when I came back to Adelaide, I put them together in
- 13:02books and by then I had a few sponsors and I said to them,
- 13:08from now on we're going to learn the steps through the Joe and
- 13:13Charlie's. And I thought I'd show you these
- 13:15poor people, these poor sponsors of mine.
- 13:18This was one and this was just, that was just steps 10:00 and
- 13:2411:00. So there is one person here
- 13:27tonight who sat through that with all the 12 steps, with all
- 13:32of this. And, and it was, you know, I
- 13:36learned that that was the thing that was the only way that I
- 13:39could really learn was to, to do it and to teach it.
- 13:44And I've learned today that the best way to learn is to teach
- 13:48because then you make all the mistakes and then you, you keep
- 13:52them. So then I remember Broken Hill,
- 13:56Jack used to say to me, he'd say whenever you get upset, go fine,
- 14:04a sacred ground to sit in. And he said the sacred grounds
- 14:09are where the churches are built.
- 14:11And I used to go and sit in in all these different churches.
- 14:16This began a thing for me to where I discovered a love for
- 14:22all types of religion and again became fanatical about that.
- 14:27But I felt the peace that he was talking about sitting in and it
- 14:32didn't matter what faith the the churches were or the cathedrals
- 14:36were, I could feel the sacred ground below me.
- 14:41Not very long after that there was this extraordinary thing
- 14:44happening in Melbourne. It happens every 10 years and
- 14:47it's called the Parliament of World Religions.
- 14:50And over 200 religions, every 10 years, over 200 religions.
- 14:56And all the leaders of those religions would come in and they
- 15:00would get, they would all hold little workshops.
- 15:03All these amazing different faiths would hold all these
- 15:07workshops, which we all free, which we could sit in on and and
- 15:13learn. And, you know, Hinduism,
- 15:16Buddhism, Christianity, all different faiths and that again,
- 15:22you know, it, it opened my eyes to the beauty of sacred.
- 15:28And I then made a decision that I wanted to learn more.
- 15:34So I, I started, I went to Dharamsala to do some teachings
- 15:41with His Holiness and all sorts of places.
- 15:46And I ended up in in Vietnam and took precepts from Titnathan and
- 15:56and then when I when I left from that teaching, which was, you
- 16:00know, about, I think through four weeks, I thought I'd become
- 16:04a numb. But he said, you're too old.
- 16:08All the nun, all, all his nuns were in their 20s, just
- 16:13beautiful, beautiful women. But you know, it.
- 16:18It was extraordinary because by then I've been studying the
- 16:23Jains. I've been studying the Quakers
- 16:26and I went to a Quaker meeting once and I remember they what
- 16:31they said. They said before you open your
- 16:34mouth as everyone's sitting around in a circle and and they
- 16:38said before you open your mouth, ask yourself, is it kind?
- 16:43Is it true? Is it necessary?
- 16:46And those three things have held me in good stead today.
- 16:49When I'm listening to something I may not want to hear or, you
- 16:54know, want to open my mouth and talk about something, I just
- 16:58stop. Is it kind?
- 17:00Is it true? Is it necessary?
- 17:03So when I came back from all these travels, the Toronto World
- 17:10Conference was on the a, a conference in Toronto and I went
- 17:14over to that. And that's on again this year.
- 17:17I went over to that and it was extraordinary.
- 17:21Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds, probably thousands of
- 17:24people all in a A and there I met my current sponsor.
- 17:29I've had three sponsors in my time in, in a a I've I've had
- 17:34three beautiful extraordinary women and Kate 1st and Polly
- 17:41became my Polly. Pete became my third sponsor and
- 17:47I am so grateful for the women who have sponsored me.
- 17:53She introduced me to her friend Sandy Beach.
- 17:57Sandy BI spoke to him before he died tragically.
- 18:03I'll have to tell you how he died because it was so beautiful
- 18:06and it's a really spiritual, extraordinary man.
- 18:10By the time I got to speak to him, he was not well, but he, he
- 18:17was gentle and just extraordinary.
- 18:22He, the way he died. He, he was at a, a small meeting
- 18:26like this around the table and they were reading step one and
- 18:31he just as from the 12:00 and 12:00.
- 18:34And as they were reading set 1, Sandy put his head down onto the
- 18:39book and he died. And my story with Sandy was I
- 18:45would ring him, you know, every few weeks.
- 18:48The first thing he said to me was Maggie, who's with you?
- 18:53And I said, you know, I was big knife in myself.
- 18:56No one. And he said, what are you doing?
- 18:59And I said, I'm writing this and that.
- 19:01And he said, from now on, you give God the credit for
- 19:06everything you do. You are never alone.
- 19:10And that changed everything. He taught me about forgiveness.
- 19:16He taught me when anything happens to you.
- 19:21Well, I'll, I'll give you the example he gave to me when he,
- 19:25he had two daughters, both died, one was murdered and one died of
- 19:32a death. And he said when he, he knew,
- 19:36when, when two men came to his door, 2 policemen, I think they
- 19:39were came to his door, he knew something bad had happened.
- 19:44And he said to himself what his sponsor had said to him.
- 19:49His sponsor said no matter what happens Sandy, you are a
- 19:54forgiving person. And he said, when I heard the
- 19:57knock on the door and I saw who was there, I said to them, come
- 20:00in, I'll come back to you in a moment.
- 20:03And he said he went to his room, his office, and he prayed.
- 20:08He prayed to God. And he said to God, no matter
- 20:11what, I am a forgiving person. No matter what, I will never
- 20:16doubt God. And he said he went out and he
- 20:19heard what had happened to his daughter.
- 20:23And he said, and this always sticks with me.
- 20:27And he said, no matter what, you must have that little gap, that
- 20:32sacred pause before you respond. And he said in that time, in
- 20:38that little sacred pause is when you bring God in and how
- 20:42extraordinary was that? He taught me about forgiveness.
- 20:47And you know, he, he had real and, and he was a real human
- 20:53being as well, you know, as a spiritual person.
- 20:56And he said, yes, I forgave that.
- 20:59I had to forgive the person that did this straight away.
- 21:02Otherwise I would never have forgiven him.
- 21:04But he said as time went on, you know, that forgiveness became
- 21:09harder and harder. And he showed me his humanness
- 21:14in all of this. He wasn't a St.
- 21:16So you know, his I, I just think I am so blessed to, to know
- 21:24people, to have people around me, to to have sponsors around
- 21:28me, to come to meetings like this and just be happy.
- 21:34So, so my own sometimes people say, you know what, what is your
- 21:39practice? And my practice is, I believe
- 21:44what Sandy told me that he said, where is God?
- 21:49And he said the only place you find God is in the now in the in
- 21:55this second. And and so for me, my practice
- 21:59is always trying to stay present where possible.
- 22:05I have a meditation routine that that I love where I look first
- 22:11at the five senses where I feel, you know, tasting, hearing,
- 22:16touching, smelling and so on. And then I do a centre in
- 22:21prayer, which is just one single word.
- 22:25And often that word for me that I meditate on and I repeat is
- 22:30the word love. Sometimes it's the word God,
- 22:33sometimes it's the word peace. But it can be any word.
- 22:37And that just brings me back into the present moment.
- 22:41Where do I find God? I find God in all things.
- 22:44This is what I've learnt. You know, when that guy who took
- 22:51me put, told me to go out in the sand and recognise that I
- 22:56couldn't have made that. I now look at every, you know,
- 23:01flowers. I look at flowers in my garden.
- 23:03I look at trees that are, you know, I walk past and I
- 23:09recognise the extraordinariness of the privilege of living a
- 23:15human life and to be able to look at anything in my garden,
- 23:19to look at any tree and recognised not what I can't
- 23:23remember how many trillion, 6 trillion.
- 23:26I think there's, I think there's 200 million or 200,000 leaves on
- 23:33every tree and there's something like 6 trillion trees in the
- 23:38world. Something I, I looked it up once
- 23:40to see how many leaves were in the world, because every leaf is
- 23:45different, every colour of every leaf is different.
- 23:49And, and sometimes when I'm walking around or, you know,
- 23:52going for walks and I think to myself, what a privilege, what
- 23:57an honour to, to know this sort of stuff, to look around and to
- 24:03be a part of life and death. So I find God in all things.
- 24:10I find God, you know, if I look at your eyes, if I look at some
- 24:15anybody's eyes, I, I will see God.
- 24:19If I'm in a good, good space, if I look in the eyes of my
- 24:24grandchildren's dogs, I see God. I see God in all the things.
- 24:31And you know, how extraordinary are we to, to be part of
- 24:36humanity? So I think that's probably it
- 24:40from me. A A As more than two million
