Birmingham just edged into fourth place as the cheapest big metro area to raise a kid, thanks to a new SmartAsset study — though costs jumped 13.6% from last year. Parents now face about $21,684 annually, still below 2024’s peak but up from $19,082 in 2025. While most cities saw hikes, Richmond and Virginia Beach were the only exceptions.
