- 0:01Speaker 1: See you guys going in and out. Good morning. All right,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well we've had I've had about sixty four hours. We've
- 0:13Speaker 1: had four meetings to walk through in a practice, to
- 0:16Speaker 1: learn the lessons in a really tough loss Saturday, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: now we're in the process applying those lessons and moving forward.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We're playing a good Delaware team. I mean they are tough,
- 0:27Speaker 1: they are physical, they are disciplined, they play with great effort.
- 0:32Speaker 1: They're stout, They've had a lot of success, they know
- 0:34Speaker 1: how to win. They're at home coming off of a
- 0:37Speaker 1: difficult loss on the road at Colorado, which when you
- 0:40Speaker 1: watch the film, the score is not indicative of the
- 0:43Speaker 1: way they played the game. They play an unorthodox type
- 0:48Speaker 1: of defense, they understand it, they play it well. I
- 0:51Speaker 1: think that their offense runs operates well with either quarterback,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but they do a nice job with misdirections stuff. They
- 1:00Speaker 1: do a nice job of involving the quarterback and in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the run game and the past game. I think that
- 1:05Speaker 1: their left tackle is an outstanding player. They've got a
- 1:07Speaker 1: really good running back, and so you know, going on
- 1:11Speaker 1: the road imposes on us a pretty pretty significant challenge.
- 1:15Speaker 1: But our guys have responded well, and like I said,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you know, it's been two and a half days. We've
- 1:20Speaker 1: had four meetings, walked through in a practice, and I
- 1:22Speaker 1: think that, uh, you know, they're focused on on how
- 1:26Speaker 1: we get better and improve as a football team every day.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And just talk about played the day.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Malachi is doing well, ty Reese, Uh played well. He's
- 1:44Speaker 1: like everyone. We all have to, you know, focus on
- 1:46Speaker 1: getting better every single day, improving on the little things
- 1:49Speaker 1: that that that hurt us in the game. But he
- 1:52Speaker 1: brings a level of physicality to our defense in the
- 1:55Speaker 1: secondary that thinks really important, you know. I mean, there's
- 1:58Speaker 1: no fear in him. He flies in there. You know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: he sacrifices his body. He plays the game the way
- 2:04Speaker 1: you're supposed to play it. On defense. It's impressive to
- 2:06Speaker 1: watch the game.
- 2:08Speaker 2: You seem to be in the right place.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah, but you have to be in the right place
- 2:14Speaker 1: all the time if you wanna have success against good
- 2:16Speaker 1: football teams.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Haven't been on the other side of it.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Evaluated and a guy makes the kind of catch, not on.
- 2:36Speaker 3: How much does that versus look at it? Calm when
- 2:41Speaker 3: you look at something like that, says fast as you you.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Know, I think you have to look at it. He's
- 2:50Speaker 1: got a winner's mentality, and he is a dom I'm
- 2:55Speaker 1: gonna tell you something that's one of the most impressive
- 2:57Speaker 1: things that none of us ever noticed because he's a
- 2:59Speaker 1: wide receiver, is Skyler Bell's willingness to block. Like he's
- 3:03Speaker 1: a very good and willing blocker. And if you go
- 3:06Speaker 1: back to the first play of our season, he went
- 3:11Speaker 1: and put his body on somebody hard, you know, And
- 3:14Speaker 1: so that along with his ability to make the clutch
- 3:17Speaker 1: catches in the key moments. I mean, that was a
- 3:19Speaker 1: one headed catch on fourth and ten. You know, that
- 3:22Speaker 1: says a lot just about his competitive makeup, about who
- 3:25Speaker 1: he is, how important it is for him to be
- 3:27Speaker 1: an all round good player, you know, the blocking and
- 3:30Speaker 1: the clutch plays. So and he doesn't have bad measurables.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I mean, he's one hundred and ninety eight pounds, I
- 3:35Speaker 1: believe right now he's done a really good job of
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, increasing his body mass, and he hasn't lost
- 3:40Speaker 1: speed as we saw, you know when he broke it
- 3:42Speaker 1: down the sideline against CCSU. But I mean, you want
- 3:45Speaker 1: your team to be filled with guys that are like
- 3:47Speaker 1: Skyler Bell, you know, that have that makeup, that mental makeup,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and that competitive makeup.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You mentioned the response, you know, I mean the guys
- 4:02Speaker 2: the last couple of years where you've been able to
- 4:05Speaker 2: respond to that.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a confidence, you know, and we've got good
- 4:10Speaker 1: players and they take it very seriously. And I thought,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, from what I've seen, Uh, they it was
- 4:18Speaker 1: a very difficult loss, and it lingered and then they
- 4:23Speaker 1: flushed it. They didn't flush it without you know, like
- 4:26Speaker 1: I said, learning the lessons and then working to applying,
- 4:28Speaker 1: because that's the only way that you get better. And
- 4:30Speaker 1: you got to you got to spend all week. You
- 4:34Speaker 1: can't just say I got it, uh good enough. I
- 4:37Speaker 1: mean you got to just really dive into the details
- 4:39Speaker 1: every single day. And that's that's the message that you
- 4:42Speaker 1: have to give your football team is you know, I
- 4:45Speaker 1: I I. You got to keep applying those lessons and
- 4:47Speaker 1: we got to build consistency. We've got to make sure
- 4:50Speaker 1: that in pressure moments that we are consistent in doing
- 4:54Speaker 1: our job, all of us. You know, I'm not just
- 4:55Speaker 1: talking about the players, all of us. And that's how
- 4:57Speaker 1: you become a good football team. Consistency you stack routine
- 5:01Speaker 1: plays on top of each other.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Is a lesson when after fun, right, So what have
- 5:08Speaker 3: you learned about the team or two weeks that you
- 5:10Speaker 3: feel like you continue to grow and.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Apply, or.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Well, you learned a lot of things. I'll tell you
- 5:16Speaker 1: what I'm impressed by is the fact that in two
- 5:18Speaker 1: games now, uh, in situations where we had to kind
- 5:23Speaker 1: of respond to a negative situation, you know, early versus
- 5:30Speaker 1: CCU and late vers Syracuses last week, is that we
- 5:33Speaker 1: were able to hold our composure offensively and move the
- 5:37Speaker 1: ball and score points and respond. And you know, that
- 5:42Speaker 1: to me is a sign of maturity and confidence and
- 5:45Speaker 1: guys believing in each other and trusting what we're doing.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You know, it's it's you know, the the atmosphere on
- 5:51Speaker 1: a sideline is so different than it is even in
- 5:54Speaker 1: row one, you know, or up in the stands or
- 5:56Speaker 1: up in the press box or on TV. The intensity
- 5:59Speaker 1: of those moments is in credible and it's easy for
- 6:02Speaker 1: immature or younger players that haven't been in those environments
- 6:05Speaker 1: to kind of implode. And you know, there was some
- 6:09Speaker 1: implosion by certain members of our of our program last week.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But I'm proud of the way our players have been
- 6:17Speaker 1: able to maintain their composure and focus and go out
- 6:19Speaker 1: and make plays well. I personally, and I think our team,
- 6:31Speaker 1: we have a ton of confidence. And Zach, I think
- 6:34Speaker 1: he's a very very good snapper, and he understands how
- 6:40Speaker 1: serious those mistakes have and what they've have been and
- 6:43Speaker 1: what they've cost us, and he takes it very seriously
- 6:48Speaker 1: and he works very hard at it. You know, it's
- 6:52Speaker 1: just being consistent in his approach every day and the
- 6:56Speaker 1: routine going out on the field every day. You know,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I think it's kicker and snappers and punters said this before.
- 7:03Speaker 1: They're much like golfers. You know, you only get so
- 7:06Speaker 1: many swings in a tournament or snaps in a game,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and every single one is so important. It's different than
- 7:14Speaker 1: playing other positions where you might get sixty snaps, and
- 7:16Speaker 1: if you have a couple of bad snaps, you know
- 7:19Speaker 1: you can make up for it. So it takes a
- 7:21Speaker 1: really mentally strong, mentally tough person to do those things.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And I believe that Zach is very mentally strong, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: he's a mentally tough kid. And I think that he
- 7:31Speaker 1: will be really good going forward because he owns it.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You know, he doesn't rationalize it. He owns it, and
- 7:36Speaker 1: that's how you get better. I thought we were much
- 7:42Speaker 1: more physical and aggressive, and we flew to the football
- 7:45Speaker 1: the way that I think people that watched this last
- 7:47Speaker 1: year were used to seeing. Now that has to be
- 7:50Speaker 1: a sixty minute thing. You know, it can't be hit
- 7:53Speaker 1: and miss, it can't be here and there, and so
- 7:55Speaker 1: it was much much better. But there's a lot of
- 7:57Speaker 1: room for improvement.
- 8:02Speaker 3: What does that say about what they're trying to do
- 8:05Speaker 3: that they can make that impression so quickly in their
- 8:08Speaker 3: first year, you know, playing FBS.
- 8:11Speaker 1: You know how they can? For well, they've always been
- 8:14Speaker 1: a outstanding FCS school and they've always had you know, success,
- 8:19Speaker 1: They've alway, They've got continuity amongst their staff. They've always
- 8:23Speaker 1: had tough, physically tough physical, tough minded players you know
- 8:30Speaker 1: that play with with effort and discipline. And when you
- 8:33Speaker 1: have that, you have a chance to compete against people,
- 8:36Speaker 1: you know, and to beat people. So uh, I think that, Uh,
- 8:40Speaker 1: it's it's I don't like, I don't know what their
- 8:42Speaker 1: commitment is financially or I don't know anything about them.
- 8:46Speaker 1: All I know is when I watch them on film.
- 8:48Speaker 1: You know, there's no way I know those things. I'm
- 8:50Speaker 1: not saying I don't know anything about it. I know
- 8:52Speaker 1: a lot about them as a football team, but you
- 8:54Speaker 1: just are impressed. You're just like, Okay, that's a damn
- 8:56Speaker 1: good football team. I don't care that they just came
- 8:59Speaker 1: up from cus level. It doesn't matter. They're a really
- 9:02Speaker 1: good football team and that's what you would expect out
- 9:04Speaker 1: of them, you know, just tough, hard, nos, gritty, freaking
- 9:08Speaker 1: work hard kids, and I respect the hell out of that.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You're as many people as you did defensively, botly growing pages.
- 9:18Speaker 2: It's the last thing become.
- 9:19Speaker 4: The consistency is that, Yeah, the down to down consistency,
- 9:26Speaker 4: the ability in a really high pressure environment and a
- 9:30Speaker 4: critical moment to perform the way you've played up to that,
- 9:35Speaker 4: perform the way you've performed up to that moment, and
- 9:37Speaker 4: not let the.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Moment get too big for you, you know. And uh,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of guys on that defense
- 9:46Speaker 1: that came here to be the guy you know that
- 9:48Speaker 1: maybe weren't the guy at the last place that they were,
- 9:50Speaker 1: or they've leveled up from a lower level, and you'd
- 9:55Speaker 1: like to think just because they've been in college football
- 9:57Speaker 1: that they've been in those moments, but they haven't. Necessarily, Now,
- 10:00Speaker 1: we can't allow them to have excuses. We can't make
- 10:03Speaker 1: excuses for ourselves or at any point, and we just
- 10:08Speaker 1: have to get better at that. You know, we talked
- 10:10Speaker 1: about that. Uh, we talked about it constantly actually, and
- 10:12Speaker 1: that's one of the reasons we practice the way we
- 10:14Speaker 1: practice to try to create the maximum amount of pressure
- 10:17Speaker 1: we can't in practice, so that at least it's close
- 10:20Speaker 1: to what it's going to be like in a game,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and they react properly.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Like they so maybe they don't reacts individuals.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Maybe sometimes it's it's you can't really like put it
- 10:39Speaker 1: on one thing. You can use the word consistency and
- 10:43Speaker 1: be absolutely accurate, absolutely accurate, but it's like, what is
- 10:48Speaker 1: the inconsistent moment, Like it's hard for me to put
- 10:50Speaker 1: my finger on one thing, you know, it's it's multiple things.
- 10:53Speaker 1: But yes, it is a lack of consistency. I wouldn't
- 10:56Speaker 1: say that it has anything to do with not playing
- 10:59Speaker 1: with the man next to them at this point. Okay,
- 11:02Speaker 1: So it's just a focus it really it And I
- 11:05Speaker 1: said it after the game, and I'd say it after
- 11:07Speaker 1: any game. Is it's being able to line up play
- 11:13Speaker 1: after play after play after play after play after play
- 11:16Speaker 1: and have the discipline mentally to do your job no
- 11:19Speaker 1: matter what the situation is. You know, you're one of eleven,
- 11:23Speaker 1: Just do your job. And Matt talks about it all
- 11:25Speaker 1: the time. Is you know, being a good defense is
- 11:28Speaker 1: stacking the routine plays over and over and over again.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Just stacking up the routine plays and then when the
- 11:34Speaker 1: time comes to make an extraordinary play, being in position
- 11:38Speaker 1: to make it because you're doing what you're supposed to do.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And listen, that is every team, every player, every coach,
- 11:46Speaker 1: every sport. You know, every coach would tell you that.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And so I don't know what the magic formula is
- 11:53Speaker 1: other than to emphasize it and work at it. And
- 11:55Speaker 1: our guys do that. And they they they don't resist
- 11:58Speaker 1: when you tell them that. They know, they know you know,
- 12:00Speaker 1: they're trying. They're they're trying, they're trying. So I mean,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you guys, if you've had kids, you know, it's just
- 12:07Speaker 1: you know, the mind goes. You gotta pullem pull them
- 12:10Speaker 1: back in. So the a couple stops short in that
- 12:16Speaker 1: game is that it.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Defense is confusing for especially is that the guys, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 2: getting more familiar with it than being.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Able to the way that they're I it can be
- 12:31Speaker 1: a confusing defense to prepare for, you know, when you
- 12:34Speaker 1: only have three or four days to prepare for it
- 12:36Speaker 1: and you haven't seen things like this and the movement
- 12:38Speaker 1: and the disruption we try to cause up front, and
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's not it's not a defense that you know, guys
- 12:46Speaker 1: coming here have necessarily played in, you know. So there's
- 12:48Speaker 1: some different things that they're doing that they maybe haven't
- 12:52Speaker 1: done in the past. And the more that they do them,
- 12:54Speaker 1: then the more consistent they can become doing them, the
- 12:57Speaker 1: more violently they can do 'em. And you know when
- 12:59Speaker 1: I defense is a game of aggression, right, and physicality
- 13:04Speaker 1: and uh and and a violent effort. And when you're
- 13:08Speaker 1: more confident because you've done it more, then you're gonna
- 13:11Speaker 1: be able to act more efficiently. So yeah, I mean
- 13:15Speaker 1: we're going to grow together, you know. And I saw
- 13:17Speaker 1: a big step on Saturday. Now you got to back
- 13:19Speaker 1: it up by by taking another another step up this week.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Quarterback Joe.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Carriers Joe. You know, I think you kind of goes
- 13:32Speaker 1: to the really back to this that started the c
- 13:35Speaker 1: c SU game and then this week and then you
- 13:38Speaker 1: see it every day in practice. You know, we just
- 13:39Speaker 1: did a two minute drill and he's just poised. He
- 13:43Speaker 1: has composure as confidence. He understands situations. He's unflappable. And
- 13:48Speaker 1: that is experience and maturity, you know, and and intelligence.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And it's really nice to have that, really really nice
- 13:56Speaker 1: to have that, you know, to feel like you got
- 13:59Speaker 1: a guy back there. It's going to understand the situation
- 14:02Speaker 1: and he's not going to panic and he's going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: make the right decision.
- 14:09Speaker 2: The outside zone scheme in.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I think he's just a great fit. But like you said,
- 14:16Speaker 1: the outside zone stuff, the jet sweep stuff, the catching
- 14:19Speaker 1: the ball in the open field things that he can do.
- 14:22Speaker 1: You know, when you get Mel in space, he's he's
- 14:24Speaker 1: tough to deal with. Defensively, he's a great compliment to Cam.
- 14:28Speaker 1: You know, they have really different running styles and yet
- 14:31Speaker 1: they both fit the scheme that we run offensively. You know,
- 14:34Speaker 1: you got Cam who's a he's a he's a bully,
- 14:37Speaker 1: but he can break it. And you got you've got
- 14:39Speaker 1: Mel who's not as much of a bully. He's more
- 14:41Speaker 1: shifty in the hole, but he can break it as well,
- 14:44Speaker 1: you know. And then you're showing Victor throwing Victor, who's
- 14:46Speaker 1: combination of both of those guys in an outstanding receiver
- 14:48Speaker 1: out of the backfield. It's a it's a good, you know,
- 14:51Speaker 1: threesome right there. You know, you're always looking for way
- 15:00Speaker 1: to creatively put points on the board, force your opponent
- 15:04Speaker 1: to prepare for things that they see on film, involve players.
- 15:10Speaker 1: You know, you see us using Terrence a lot, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 1: using John a lot, rotating our receivers and our backs
- 15:19Speaker 1: through and our tight ends, you know, figuring out what
- 15:21Speaker 1: guys do well and putting them in a position to
- 15:24Speaker 1: do what they do well. And John, you know, it's
- 15:27Speaker 1: good to get him in there and get him that shot.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And you know, I went up and I went and
- 15:33Speaker 1: looked at his high school stats. They were pretty darn impressive.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I think his senior year did he throw like thirty
- 15:39Speaker 1: something touchdowns and run for a lot of yards as
- 15:42Speaker 1: a quarterback. So you know, he's you talk about a
- 15:46Speaker 1: success story, I mean, still still developing success story. But
- 15:51Speaker 1: John Nider walked on here. I think it was in
- 15:53Speaker 1: the Connecticut State Player of the Year walks on here
- 15:56Speaker 1: as a quarterback. We moved the receiver. Nobody can cover
- 15:59Speaker 1: him on the scout team. And now he's a scholarship athlete.
- 16:01Speaker 1: You know, helping us win games. So you know, guys
- 16:04Speaker 1: like that, they make it fun to coach, you guys. Yeah,
- 16:18Speaker 1: he still got so much potential to get better. That's
- 16:21Speaker 1: what's exciting is to see the progress that he's made.
- 16:25Speaker 1: And I can't even overstate this, and I've told you
- 16:27Speaker 1: guys this before. When we looked at the film of
- 16:29Speaker 1: him playing football in the Bronx, all right, you couldn't
- 16:34Speaker 1: even hardly find him on the film because that it
- 16:38Speaker 1: was like somebody you know, taking their their phone out
- 16:42Speaker 1: and videotaped it, you know. But Sriki went and saw
- 16:45Speaker 1: him and spent time with him and learned about him
- 16:49Speaker 1: in his background and how he grew up and you know,
- 16:52Speaker 1: what his goals were, and there was just something in
- 16:54Speaker 1: there that kind of spoke to Serriki. They had, you
- 16:57Speaker 1: know a little bit of a similar background, and uh,
- 17:01Speaker 1: Serriku was right, and his kid's got a chance as
- 17:03Speaker 1: he develops to be a really really special player here. Uh,
- 17:08Speaker 1: you know, Jackson Mitchell. I only got to coach Jackson
- 17:12Speaker 1: for one year, I think was it one year the
- 17:14Speaker 1: first year, you know, and I'm getting to spend a
- 17:16Speaker 1: lot of time with Jackson now because he's he's my
- 17:20Speaker 1: living at my house as one of my sons. But uh,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you know, Jackson, I think is a really good judge
- 17:25Speaker 1: of talent and uh Jackson's you know, spent some time
- 17:30Speaker 1: in the NFL and he he he agrees and he
- 17:32Speaker 1: sees special things in umar you know. So, uh, yeah,
- 17:37Speaker 1: we're excited about the direction he's going. Jackson's doing a
- 17:41Speaker 1: fantastic job, by the way. He's he's built for this.
- 17:44Speaker 1: He told me the other day, he said, this is
- 17:46Speaker 1: what I want to do. I love I love coaching.
- 17:48Speaker 1: So it's really fun to have him and Dante and
- 17:51Speaker 1: Caleb and all those guys around. Like they they give
- 17:53Speaker 1: you juice, you know, and when you bring it in
- 17:55Speaker 1: a lot of transfers, they can kind of confirm for
- 17:58Speaker 1: the new guys like this is what it's about, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: this is where we were and this is where we're headed.
- 18:02Speaker 1: So it's nice to have those guys around. So why, well,
- 18:08Speaker 1: he's hard working, he's smart, he understands the game. He
- 18:13Speaker 1: really works at it. You know, I mean, listen, he's
- 18:16Speaker 1: out the door at five twenty am every morning, you know,
- 18:18Speaker 1: I mean, I hear the ringer go off. He's very
- 18:23Speaker 1: disciplined when he comes home, he gets a bottle of water,
- 18:25Speaker 1: and he goes and puts his head down. You know,
- 18:29Speaker 1: when he's here, he's always working, you know, whether it's
- 18:31Speaker 1: looking at high school players or you know, he takes
- 18:34Speaker 1: a scout team out at seven thirty in the morning
- 18:37Speaker 1: and gets them prepared. He takes the backup linebackers out
- 18:40Speaker 1: in the afternoon and just walks through some things with him.
- 18:44Speaker 1: So there's just a complete dedication. And he wants he
- 18:47Speaker 1: wants to be a good football He wants to be
- 18:48Speaker 1: a football coach, but he wants to be a really
- 18:50Speaker 1: good football coach. When you look at him, you know,
- 18:53Speaker 1: you see traits in him that say, not only will
- 18:56Speaker 1: he be a really good football coach, but at some
- 18:58Speaker 1: point in his life, he will be a really good
- 19:00Speaker 1: head football coach, hopefully here at the University of Connecticut.
- 19:04Speaker 1: You know, mister Connecticut, great player here becoming the head
- 19:08Speaker 1: coach here. And he has all those qualities that he'd
- 19:11Speaker 1: make this state really proud. Not too soon, okay, not
- 19:16Speaker 1: too soon, all right, but I think that highly of them.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So why oh, we got it's a fraternity over there.
- 19:25Speaker 1: It's a fraternity, I got right now, there's four four
- 19:27Speaker 1: we got four of the staff standing there, and it fluctuates,
- 19:31Speaker 1: it might end up being five some days and six.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And you know, it was really cool when Chase and
- 19:36Speaker 1: Val we're going through the pre draft process to have
- 19:38Speaker 1: those two big guys living with us. And I don't
- 19:41Speaker 1: know if I've told you the stories about like Val
- 19:43Speaker 1: cooking for us, and you know, his grandma's favorite recipe
- 19:46Speaker 1: made for Kathy and I on Super Bowl Sunday. You know,
- 19:49Speaker 1: we come in and he's got Austrian music playing and
- 19:52Speaker 1: he's got the food out, and you know, of course
- 19:55Speaker 1: she loved it because she loves to cook. And she's
- 19:56Speaker 1: got to six seven, three hundred and ten pound guys
- 19:59Speaker 1: that will eat anything thing. So it's been pretty cool.
- 20:01Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. So all right, you guys have a
- 20:04Speaker 1: great day. Appreciate it.
