- 0:00The ego consciousness lives within the illusion of having
- 0:04free will and making its own independent decisions.
- 0:09A closer examination shows us that the individual is not an
- 0:13island unto himself. Rather he is a result of
- 0:18innumerable factors from genetics to prenatal influences,
- 0:23to interactions with family, friends, peers, coworkers as he
- 0:27grows and develops, to the health factors and condition of
- 0:31his physical body, nervous envelope and mind.
- 0:35Environmental factors, societal factors, economic factors,
- 0:40political factors, and the influence of media, marketing
- 0:45and advertising and manufactured needs created by those
- 0:50influences that push and mold his choices.
- 0:54There is also the impulsion caused by past action, the law
- 0:58of cause and effect, the law of karma, which may even transcend
- 1:03a specific lifetime and carry impulsions forward in the
- 1:07overall growth of the psychic being and the maturity of the
- 1:11consciousness through numerous lifetimes.
- 1:16All of these forces operate under the impulsion of the
- 1:18gunas, the modes of nature. The Bhagwad Gita describes how
- 1:23man's decisions and actions are driven by the gunas as if
- 1:27mounted on a wheel. The universal forces act through
- 1:31the various modalities of interfacing with the individual,
- 1:35in most cases unrecognized and unseen, and once we internalize
- 1:41them, we believe that we have made a free and independent
- 1:45decision. In this case, free will is very
- 1:49much an illusion. True free will resides in the
- 1:53divine consciousness, and only when the individual ego is
- 1:57transcended and merges its being into that divine consciousness
- 2:02can it be said there is truly an action of free will at the
- 2:06individual level. A disciple asks.
- 2:11I have not understood this. At best we have only the poor
- 2:16relative freedom, which by us is ignorantly called free will.
- 2:20But that is at bottom illusory, since it is the modes of nature
- 2:24that express themselves through our personal will.
- 2:28It is force of nature grasping us, ungrasped by us, that
- 2:33determines what we shall will or how we shall will it.
- 2:38Nature, not an independent ego, chooses what object we shall
- 2:43seek, whether by reasoned will or unreflecting impulse, at any
- 2:48moment of our existence. Citation from Sri Aurobindo, The
- 2:53synthesis of Yoga, page 88. The Mother responds quote not
- 3:00understood. What do you mean not understood?
- 3:03It's a fact. There's nothing to understand.
- 3:06It's like that. I have explained this to you.
- 3:09I don't know how many times you think it is you who decide.
- 3:14These are impulses coming from outside.
- 3:17You think you are conscious of your will.
- 3:20It is a consciousness which is not yours and everything.
- 3:24You are made-up entirely of something which is the forces of
- 3:27nature expressing a higher will of which you are unconscious.
- 3:32Only one doesn't understand this, except when one can come
- 3:36out of one's ego, though it'd be only for a moment for the ego.
- 3:42And this is its strength. It's convinced that it alone
- 3:45decides, but if one looks attentively, 1 notices that it
- 3:50is moved by all sorts of things which are not itself.
