- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me covering One Piece episodes
- 0:14three fifty one through three fifty three, plus some of three fifty But it
- 0:20turns out I'm mostly good on that these episodes are awakening after five hundred years,
- 0:27Ors opens his eyes, a belief worth begging to live for, Brooke
- 0:32defends his afro, and a man's promise never dies to the friend waiting under
- 0:38the distant sky. In these episodes, it turns out that whales coming back
- 0:46around. Guys, I'm very excited about it, delighted in fact. Welcome
- 0:51to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank
- 1:15you very much to the One Piece crew for commissioning this episode. Yeah.
- 1:19So the last episode I recorded, I reached a point where I was like,
- 1:25oh, I only have finished covering episode the second of the three episodes.
- 1:29I'm going to have to cover the third one. But when I rewatched
- 1:33the third episode today, I was like, Oh, most of what I
- 1:38talked about happened in the third episode. Actually, I sort of had it
- 1:42in my head that a lot of like the lore stuff happened in the second
- 1:47one, but not really, so I mostly did talk about episode three fifty
- 1:55without almost missing anything. There's only a couple of things that I wanted to
- 1:59go back and mention. One of the things being the fact that Lufy is
- 2:06like subdued by Pirona with those like those ghosts that make you feel despair,
- 2:15which I am kind of enjoying those as a weapon, and I wouldn't mind
- 2:19seeing more of that deployed because it feels like it would be pretty consistently effective,
- 2:25and we don't see that much of them. The other thing that I
- 2:30had intended to mention was the fact that we find out about the salt,
- 2:38and the salt is like a weapon to use against the zombies, which,
- 2:43like this makes sense. Salt is often in a lot of different cultures and
- 2:46traditions seen as a sort of defense against the supernatural in general, and I
- 2:55don't know, like entirely where that comes from, but my theory has always
- 3:00been that salt prevents things from growing, and the idea that these things are
- 3:06like somehow alive, if you cut off their access to like the power of
- 3:12the earth, that that will kill them, and that is the only because
- 3:16you know, will sow your fields with salt. Is literally we're going to
- 3:22make sure to kill everything that will feed you and keep you alive. So
- 3:27I'm assuming it's something like this, but Florian is saying cleansing salt, and
- 3:32yeah, that's true, because they keep saying they've been cleansed, and I
- 3:37forget that. Salt baths are also like a thing to be used in a
- 3:40lot of traditions to rid yourself of spirits or there were a lot of like
- 3:46when I was a young what's the word I want, not which exactly,
- 3:55but I guess I was trying witchy things. There were a lot of rituals
- 4:00that began with bathing in salt water, and not necessarily like the ocean.
- 4:06It was more that you would like, you know, fill a tub with
- 4:09water and then add containers of salt and then bathe in it to cleanse yourself.
- 4:15And I will tell you what, I did that one time and felt
- 4:23absolutely amazing afterward, and it's the sort of thing that I think about and
- 4:27I'm like, I want to try it again because that was so great,
- 4:30But part of me feels like it was a fluke and I don't want to
- 4:32like ruin it for myself that it was, you know, not related to
- 4:36the salt at all. Maybe it was related to the ritual of it.
- 4:40I don't know, but either way, this salt is what winds up like
- 4:46keeping. It takes the spirit the shadow of whomever it was stolen from,
- 4:53out of the zombie, and the zombie just drops dead and is unusable,
- 4:59and then the shadow just automatically rejoins its owner. So that's like a nice
- 5:06convenient way for this to go. And I am really looking forward to our
- 5:11friends getting their shadows back because they can't fight in daylight, which is very,
- 5:16very inconvenient. There's also a moment where Frankie says, I have one
- 5:23last burning question, and we don't see the question. We just see him
- 5:28choked up later when he's talking about it to Robin, and eventually we find
- 5:34out that the question was essentially, what's your plan? Because you are really
- 5:46scary and I know you're a gentleman and you have a great attitude, but
- 5:53you've got to know that you go out into the world looking like this and
- 5:56it's not really going to be awesome for you. What keeps you going?
- 6:00What is driving you? And Robin is sort of like, that's really cruel,
- 6:05dude, what's your deal? But it seems like Brooke appreciates being asked
- 6:11to be honest, and we find out that Brooke is part of the crew
- 6:21that left that whale at the very very beginning of the Grand Line and promised
- 6:30to come back for it and never returned. And it turns out they didn't
- 6:34return because they were literally all killed. But this whale is still like pining
- 6:40and waiting for them. And what is his name? Guys, if you're
- 6:46there, let me know because I cannot remember he says the name, and
- 6:50when he says it, Laboon, Thank you Florian, because when he says
- 6:56it, I was like, that rings a bell? What is that?
- 6:58And then he says he was too young a whale to take with us,
- 7:01And I was like, oh my god, what because I just never thought
- 7:06this was going to come back up. I say that it's not even necessarily
- 7:12that I thought it was never going to come back up, as much as
- 7:15I just never thought about it. Again, you know, we had this
- 7:17really sad tale of this whale waiting, a whale tale hello waiting around and
- 7:25then our crew encounters it. It gets to like fight Lufy and it has
- 7:30fun and enjoys it. Lufy promises to like come back eventually and I'm thinking
- 7:34whatever we see, if we do ever, whatever we see again of the
- 7:40whale is going to be about it reuniting with our crew. I am not
- 7:45expecting to solve the issue of it being abandoned by this other crew. So
- 7:51personally, it makes me really happy that we are potentially going to go back
- 7:58and visit this guy again. I don't know how long that's going to take,
- 8:03because they have gone it feels to me like a really really long way
- 8:07since then. And it may be that, you know, they wind up
- 8:13getting Brooke to come with them on the Sunny and then they eventually make their
- 8:18way back there, but that's like after a great period of time has passed.
- 8:24Or it could be that they like make it a priority to turn around
- 8:28and go back and bring him directly there. But it also maybe that,
- 8:35like we don't actually accompany Brooke, which I don't see, I feel like
- 8:41we would have to go back. But anyway, I really like this moment,
- 8:46and I think that I have talked about this on other shows, so
- 8:52forgive me if this is something you guys have all heard before, but I
- 8:56am so the whole thing here is that Brooke feels I made a promise to
- 9:05this little animal. And even though I am dead technically and all of the
- 9:11crew is dead, I still have it in my power to make good on
- 9:16this promise and let him know what happened. And I have an obligation to
- 9:22do so because I said I would, and I have no doubt he's still
- 9:26there waiting, Like, yeah, it's been fifty years, but like,
- 9:31who knows he could still be there, and if on the off chance he
- 9:35is, I have to make an effort, and I fully approve this.
- 9:41My reasons for approving it, though, are like very much wrapped up in
- 9:48this universe. Because one, I know that he is still waiting and that
- 9:54broke my heart, so getting some closure on that, I'm all about it.
- 9:58I also know that even if I weren't, like even if I hadn't
- 10:05seen Laboon with my own eyes and our friends had not encountered him, because
- 10:09of the way one piece tends to function, I would have assumed, yes,
- 10:13Laboon is still waiting for him. And also because Brooke does have it
- 10:22within his power, this isn't something that's an unreasonable ask. He made this
- 10:26promise, it's weighing on him and he if he just like makes it through
- 10:31what's going on here at Thriller Bark. He will be able to fulfill that
- 10:35promise, and there's really no good reason not to do it. He hasn't
- 10:41got other goals or other obligations that are weighing him down. It is really
- 10:48the one thing that's keeping him going. So for all these reasons, I
- 10:52fully fully support his attitude about this promise. But I just want to mention
- 11:01now because I may have said before I tend towards hating the like concept of
- 11:11promises in stories, and that the reason for that is that I tend to
- 11:18be like I won't say that I tend towards being a logical person, because
- 11:24that's one of those things that I feel like gets said a lot by people
- 11:28who are unaware that they're like unaware of their own emotions, and they think
- 11:33somehow that their emotions are objective fact instead of understanding that they are just emotionally
- 11:41like illiterate. So I won't say that I tend towards logic. But I
- 11:46am somebody who feels that the conditions of something should be dependent on circumstances.
- 11:52So if I'm watching something where a person makes X y Z promise and then
- 11:58they make that promise, for example, to somebody who's like on their deathbed
- 12:03or somebody who's working without all the information, and then circumstances change and that
- 12:11person finds out the promise that they made is actually kind of a fucked up
- 12:16thing to have promised, or that the person who made them promise it didn't
- 12:20fully understand what was happening, or that maybe the person who made them promise
- 12:26is themselves a bad person. They're all kinds of ways that this can shake
- 12:31out, and the story will depend on that person taking their promise so seriously
- 12:37that everything else falls to the wayside in a way that's like that I find
- 12:43really sort of cheating because it creates this like drama because they start to be
- 12:50willing to get really ruthless for the sake of this promise and are genuinely caught
- 12:56up in it while I'm sitting there like, just don't do the promise.
- 13:01It's fine. One they're dead, or two they were wrong or three.
- 13:05Like there's all sorts of reasons to not keep a promise, And it feels
- 13:11to me every time somebody makes one and they take it super seriously and they're
- 13:16doing it with like this like really laser focused objective. What's the word I
- 13:24want. I was gonna say objectivity, that's the wrong word, but you
- 13:28guys know what I'm talking about. It's just to me like basically agreeing tacitly
- 13:39that you will never evolve your opinion on a matter and that the facts don't
- 13:46matter. It's simply the promise itself that matters, and everything around it is
- 13:52like not a factor at all, which I think is a bad way to
- 13:56go through the world. So that said, you know, my issue would
- 14:01promise. I would never ask somebody to like make me a prompt because,
- 14:05like I just never believe that things go the way you expect. So there's
- 14:09all sorts of things that I have said in my life with total conviction and
- 14:13then wound up like backtracking on because I turned out to be wrong or things
- 14:16fell out a certain way. So that said, because of the circumstances surrounding
- 14:24everything that's going on with Brooke, I fully support his promise and what it
- 14:33is that he is going for. Whereas a promise like Choppers, for example,
- 14:39where he's determined to like get the cherry trees to bloom again, it's
- 14:45not possible to do so. Instead, he does this weird thing where he
- 14:52just makes pink float in the air and then counts that promise as kept,
- 14:56which is super weird to me and isn't actually fulfilling the promise itself, and
- 15:03to me, is cheating. And if you're going to cheat, then just
- 15:09don't do it, because what are you accomplishing. So this bit with Brooke,
- 15:16I have to say, I really really enjoy Broke as a character.
- 15:20I like this motivation for him, and there's something about the fact that the
- 15:22promise he's keeping isn't even to a person, it's to an animal that makes
- 15:28me respect him even more because a lot of people wouldn't take that too seriously
- 15:33because it's an animal. And I have a real soft spot, as you
- 15:37all know, for the animals in this series. And I also have this
- 15:41like real struggle with letting down animals because they don't understand what's going on exactly,
- 15:50and if you are able to communicate and make things easier for them,
- 15:54I just always feel like you should because they're working with like within difficulties with
- 16:00communication and whatnot. And I don't know if Brooke will become a real member
- 16:06of the crew because it seems like Lufy is prepared to fucking invite anybody at
- 16:08this point, but if he gets to travel with them temporarily, I will
- 16:15really really enjoy it, and I hope it lasts a while because he is
- 16:18just so much fun and I really like the fact that he's like he is.
- 16:25I was sort of worried when Frankie asks him what keeps you going?
- 16:30Or why do you have such a good attitude or why are you such a
- 16:32gentleman? I was worried that his response was going to be something like,
- 16:36well, I'm a gentleman to like show people that there's nothing to be afraid
- 16:40of, which is not that's a completely valid thing to do to keep people
- 16:47from being afraid, but it also starts to get into this sad area where
- 16:52it's almost like respectability politics, like you have to be better and kinder and
- 16:59more respectable than anybody else around you to make up for the assumptions people are
- 17:04going to make about you, which it just seems to me that Brooke is
- 17:10just this kind of guy and always was and he's just kept that personality and
- 17:15I hope that's true and that it's really mostly about that, because him looking
- 17:19so scary but then being in a lot of ways, like the most cultured
- 17:25and reasonable of the crew and sensitive, you know, other than maybe Chopper,
- 17:30I'm really really here for it. I wouldn't mind a skeleton friend being
- 17:37a part of the crew for at least an extended period, if not forever.
- 17:41He brings a whole different angle to everything. You know. It's interesting
- 17:48because if we've got like we acquired Robin on the grand line, we acquired
- 17:55Chopper as well Chopper being non human, then we've got Frankie who is like
- 18:00part human, like he is human, but he's a cyborg, so not
- 18:03not anymore fully, And so if we had joined permanently, he would be
- 18:14the second fully non human, third non human asterisk member of the crew.
- 18:22And I think that would be a really great way to sort of shake things
- 18:29up. I like this so anyway. Use those are the things that the
- 18:37salt and then the beginning of that conversation were the things that I had not
- 18:41gotten a chance to talk about. And also the fact that like we see
- 18:45Brooke going back into the castle to deal with some shit, and he is
- 18:52completely shredding all of the zombies that are coming out of the portraits and gets
- 19:00in the mouths with salt and manages to like completely eliminate all of them as
- 19:04threats. So that's good because those guys in the frames were genuinely like they're
- 19:12not even exactly a huge threat or obstacle. They're just like the kind of
- 19:22thing that I could see forgetting about and then sneaking up on people, and
- 19:29the whole thing with him and the way that he's trying to get his shadow
- 19:33back. It turns out that the skeletal swordsmen that our friends ran into is
- 19:41the one who has his spirit, his shadow inside it, So it's just
- 19:48coincidence that they kind of look pretty alike. But I felt so bad because
- 19:55Brooke is like, you're just my shadow, Why are you beating me?
- 20:00And I'm assuming that it's because the swordsman was like trained and has like the
- 20:07right strength in his body because of having done this, that he can do
- 20:12what Brook can do, but even better. He's working from a place of
- 20:18more physical strength because he's got like actual muscles versus our guy being just bones.
- 20:26It's hard to tell exactly how strong he is. I will say that,
- 20:32and I should mention guys, if you hear some sounds in the background,
- 20:37I have my dog Sam in here with me, who just had that
- 20:41surgery to get his little tumor removed, and he is wandering around. I
- 20:47just put him in his crate for most of the day. I intended to
- 20:49leave him in there while I recorded, but he needs I wanted to give
- 20:53him a change of scenery. He's been there a whole day, and he
- 20:56slept in there as well, So I was like, let me just bring
- 21:00him in here, and as long as he's quiet and he's not whining like
- 21:03he was the other day. I think the medications have gotten to him and
- 21:07he has wound up more tired. So stop liking that, Sam, stop
- 21:14it. Oh my god, I wish you guys could see the face he
- 21:17just gave me. What a good boy. He's so sweet, y'all.
- 21:21He has eyebrows and so sometimes can look at me with like the most sad
- 21:26expression. All right, So this is when we go to the actual moment
- 21:33of truth where they put Lufi's shadow into number nine hundred and he finally opens
- 21:41his eyes. And I will tell you what, kids, I don't know
- 21:47what this thing is, but it's like even us Up says something like it
- 21:52looks like a giant. But even for a giant. This guy is fucking
- 21:57huge, like what And I would also like to know very very curious because
- 22:04everybody else has looked like they're stitched together with the parts of different people or
- 22:08animals and stuff, and he looks like he's just a fully a full corpse.
- 22:14Like I'm not really sure what the deal is there, but I was
- 22:18pretty gratified to find out that my assumption about Lufy's main focus in life being
- 22:27food and him having an insatiable appetite turned out to be correct. I started
- 22:33to second guess myself. I thought, maybe his sole purpose has been I'm
- 22:41going to be King of the Pirates. So when he is awoken inside this
- 22:47creature, because his quote master's objective is also to become King of the pirates,
- 22:56that maybe Lufy would be like uncontrollable due to that, you know,
- 23:00because it would just be such a complete conflict with his main driving desire in
- 23:04life. And maybe that will turn out to be a thing. But as
- 23:11of right now, it's just that he wants to eat NonStop, and they
- 23:15have no more food except for stuff that's got salt in it, which we
- 23:18wind up finding out it doesn't matter the type of salt if it's in something,
- 23:25that's the end of the story, which that's a lot of food that
- 23:30they've got that doesn't have salt in it. All things considered, we live
- 23:36on a boat and most things would probably be preserved in some sense and that
- 23:44would require salt. So they're lucky that they managed to catch that in time.
- 23:49But there's another zombie who takes a bite out of it. And did
- 23:56we ever find out, like does Robin get bit by a zombie? Because
- 24:00I feel like we see one of them bite her and she doesn't turn into
- 24:04one, because that's not really the way that zombies like, you know,
- 24:07this isn't a virus, they're being made. I just don't recall if one
- 24:14of them bit her and if that was meant to be an expression of hunger
- 24:18or if it was just the way it fought, because I'm so used to
- 24:22zombies being like brains, you know, and going after people in order to
- 24:26infect them because they're drawn to their life force or whatever. And the fact
- 24:32that we've got like these guys are zombies, but apparently they still get hungry
- 24:37and can eat is fascinating because I am not used to this being a thing
- 24:41at all, and we just needed to see. Of course that eating something
- 24:47with salt and it causes the same thing to happen. But considering how I
- 24:53was sort of like, oh, you're gonna have to like force this down
- 24:56their throat. But if the zombies just get hungry enough and you just put
- 25:00the food in front of them, they just eat it. And well,
- 25:06I say that at one point some guy says he ate salted fish? What
- 25:10was he? A new guy? Was this his first day? So I
- 25:11guess a lot of the zombies know not to do that. It's interesting to
- 25:18me because of I'm sure the orders that they're given that they haven't got the
- 25:25kind of like self preservation for their shadow and soul where they're like, oh,
- 25:30yeah, let me go and eat something so that I can release this
- 25:32spirit. It's not about that. They're like, no, I have to
- 25:34preserve this weapon that I am. So yeah, this this whole thing with
- 25:42Lufy. He wakes up and the moment when he opens his eyes for the
- 25:48first time is the most drawn out thing. And it's really funny to me
- 25:53because you know, I get that, like, in practice, it's probably
- 25:59a very thing to see something this size that looks for all intents and purposes
- 26:03quite dead open its eyes. It's very, very shocking. However, as
- 26:08somebody who has just like watched so many zombies running around this whole place,
- 26:14the fact that USAP and Nami and Chopper all give it away that they're in
- 26:19the room because of the shock of him opening his eyes. I was like,
- 26:23kids, come on, you guys are so bad at this, Like,
- 26:29get it together. You knew this was going to happen. Don't look
- 26:32then, how about that if it's gonna be so difficult for you, just
- 26:36don't look. So yeah, the moment when he opens his eyes is like
- 26:41the very very end of the episode cuts off and then to be continued,
- 26:47and then we go into Awakening after five hundred years, which is when we
- 26:52really get to hear Lucy's voice echoing over another deeper voice, you know,
- 27:00and he starts to eat them out of house and home, which is something
- 27:06that evidently Gecko Moria had not been prepared to deal with at all. And
- 27:11why would you? I really I want to mention something here because you guys
- 27:18know that a big part of what I love about this show is the absolutely
- 27:23banana pants designs of the characters. And I haven't spent remotely enough time on
- 27:37what Gecko Moria looks like. Like, this dude is bananas looking, and
- 27:45he is, so I'm just trying to like figure out where to start.
- 27:52So he's got these like pants that go there there. They look like shorts.
- 28:03The thing is that he is shaped like an easter egg or a tear
- 28:08drop. So the pants they come up halfway, but they it looks like
- 28:21it's much further than that, like the way that old men wear their pants
- 28:25buckled above their belly, you know, that kind of vibe. And it's
- 28:32really an amazing combo because the pants themselves are like checkered yellow and orange,
- 28:38like a buffalo plaid kind of vibe or or I guess that would be known
- 28:44a argyle. I don't know. But the point that I wanted to make
- 28:48is that the belt he's wearing with it is like grommetted in a way that
- 28:56reminds me of the kinds of belts that you would buy at like Hot Topic
- 29:00or something. So it feels very much like we're seeing the like somebody just
- 29:11went to a closet full of punk style clothing and pulled out virtually everything that
- 29:18was in there underneath this jacket thing, which I will get to. He
- 29:23is wearing a fish net top, which this illustrator is very fond of fishnet.
- 29:33It is all over the place, and I'm not gonna say it's a
- 29:38bad choice, because fishnet is a very distinctive look and it changes the whole
- 29:42vibe of an outfit. You can have a whole like dress, shoe,
- 29:48purse combo and feel like you know what's going on, and then you throw
- 29:51fishnets in there, and the vibe is totally different. So I'm not mad
- 29:56at it, but it is funny to me how frequently fishnet turns up.
- 30:00So he's got that underneath a long sleeve black blazer. I hesitate to use
- 30:10that word. It's got a big popped collar in the style of like a
- 30:15Dracula costume that you would buy somewhere, you know, the sort of fan
- 30:21collar that comes up behind your head, like in Elizabeth Elizabethan collars that went
- 30:27in that direction. There was the roffs, but then they became like those
- 30:30sort of fan shaped things. It's like that, and it's shaped in a
- 30:36very bat like, like bat wing kind of style. And then he has
- 30:41got this huge ruff that comes down in a really similar way. To Brooks
- 30:52Ruff. His like is much bigger and wider, but they both have this
- 31:00like look to them, and I am When I first saw Brooke, I
- 31:03was thinking that we were going for like a Michael Jackson sort of look,
- 31:07especially with the thriller thing going on, you know, and I'm not sure
- 31:14that's really it's. It sort of goes back and forth with what I think
- 31:18is going on there. But then I saw this Rough and he has a
- 31:22symbol that looks like the symbol that Prince changed his name to, very very
- 31:30similar. It's not identical, but it's like a cross with a sort of
- 31:36like crescent at the top that has a really really similar look when you look
- 31:44quick, and I was like, is it, Prince, Is that what
- 31:48we're doing? But I don't think there's any consistent, like necessarily one to
- 31:52one theme here exactly. And of course then he's got like a little scalloped
- 32:00edges to his sleeves, but he's got black gloves on, so it's all
- 32:04one long black you know, from fingertips to shoulders. The most Bonker's part
- 32:10of his design though, is his neck and head. His neck is longer
- 32:19than his whole face, and considering that his face is very long, that's
- 32:23really saying something, and it's split up the front and then has like X
- 32:30stitches over it, as if to suggest that he himself is like a reanimated
- 32:37corpse that was cut open and stitched back together, which maybe is the case,
- 32:42but it seems to me that's just really meant to underscore what it is
- 32:45that he does. And those stitches like go up to his chin, and
- 32:51then we have his face, and then between his eyes up his forehead the
- 32:54stitches continue in a really odd look. And then he has pointed ears,
- 33:04very very pointed horns that come out of his forehead above his eyes, and
- 33:08they're not very big horns. They're just kind of decorative, really really wide
- 33:17mouth full of sharp, sharp teeth, and dramatically outlined, canted black,
- 33:24simple like dot eyes. His eyes are not particularly interesting in comparison to the
- 33:32rest of him, I'll say that, but the whole look of him is
- 33:37actually pretty great. Like I have had, you know, there's just sort
- 33:45of some villains who turn up and I'm like, I don't even know what
- 33:47I'm supposed to think here, because this person is so ridiculous looking that he's
- 33:53not scary, and I feel like Geko Maria manages to be ridiculous looking and
- 34:00scary. He just really kind of does both and I respect that, you
- 34:05know, I feel like that's not an easy thing to pull off, Brian
- 34:09says. Colleen. Clickin'beard, the voice actress who voices Lufy, says that
- 34:15doing the voice of Oors is the favorite voice she has ever recorded for an
- 34:20anime. That's fun. Her name is Clinkinbeard. I really read that as
- 34:25chicken Beard at first, which is only a little weirder actually, like Clinkinbeard
- 34:30is a wild name, but Oors his voice is It felt to me just
- 34:39like Lufy's normal voice, with like another voice that had been modulated under it.
- 34:45But based on the fact that she said that, I'm assuming she had
- 34:47to do something different actually than just like the regular Lufy voice. So I
- 34:53would be interested in like seeing, you know. I don't know if they
- 34:57have like video of her recording both or what they did for his voice,
- 35:02but that would probably be fun to see. So anyway, Yeah, this
- 35:07dude brings this creature to life using Lufy's shadow, but is not prepared for
- 35:15what Lufy's vibe is going to be. And notably, I think I'm not
- 35:25sure. It doesn't seem like Lufy's devil fruit power transferred. He reaches a
- 35:32handout and nothing happens, and then says, weird, I expected my arm
- 35:38to stretch out, and maybe it's just that it works differently because it you
- 35:46know, like, but it seems as if that didn't work, which if
- 35:52this creature is only Lufy's desire to eat and explored the sea, I am
- 36:02so sorry Gecko Maria that you wasted number nine hundred on this guy, but
- 36:07you're not going to get your money's worth at all. And I really wonder
- 36:12like if Lufy's if his shadow gets released from this creature's mouth and the creature
- 36:20drops dead, I feel like that's going to mostly destroy the whole ship,
- 36:25Like Killer Bark is toast i'd or is it possible to refreeze him and just
- 36:32like use another shadow at some other point, because the vibe I get when
- 36:39they bring him to life is like, this is our one chance to use
- 36:45this corpse and probably in practice it's not totally like but also he busted out
- 36:54of the frigerated sort of area that he was in. Eventually he just breaks
- 37:00through the wall, So I don't know, how well he'd keep and also
- 37:04because he is so huge, getting the body like picked up and transported back
- 37:09into that refrigerated area would probably be pretty challenging. So yeah, I feel
- 37:15like that would be That's not a thing that our guy wants. I have
- 37:22to mention two MVP of this episode, Sindury like ducking in front of him
- 37:28over and over again and just being like, why are you blocking me?
- 37:30I can't get enough of that. It is such a stupid, repeated joke,
- 37:35and the fact that it doesn't matter and that she's not actually accomplishing anything
- 37:40is what makes it so funny. But yeah, and the thing too when
- 37:45they're talking about, you know, like we have Lufy being brought into this
- 37:50guy's body because Lufy has such a high bounty on him that this man is
- 37:53assuming that Lufy is like a particularly talented like Marshall artists or something, who
- 38:00knows. But he also says something about how this is the man who was
- 38:07like the only warrior powerful enough and ruthless enough to be given the name Devil.
- 38:14And his name is Ores, which is a terrible name. I don't
- 38:16know why you would call somebody ores when they're meant to be like intimidating,
- 38:21but I'm going to just forget that and call him nine hundred. And I
- 38:27don't know anything beyond the fact that this thing is huge why he is considered
- 38:35such a badass fighter, saying like, oh, his name was Devil and
- 38:38he was ruthless and powerful. I don't trust your judgment on this anymore,
- 38:44sir, because you just stuck a shadow into him without doing much apparent due
- 38:50diligence to find out whether or not it was going to be the type of
- 38:54person you wanted. So the fact that he has this huge body ready to
- 39:01go, I'm not convinced that this guy ors was the fighter. This guy
- 39:08seems to think like maybe he's big enough and he looks scary, but otherwise
- 39:15who knows what the deal is with this guy? And this is when our
- 39:24friends, like they freak out because this thing opened its eyes, they get
- 39:30caught. There's a moment where it looks like they're just gonna be gripped up
- 39:36again, but then Lufy says meet and completely like this roar rocks the entire
- 39:46island. And later on when they run into like Robin and Frankie, Robin
- 39:52is like, what was that noise? Because we fucking heard it, but
- 39:55we didn't see anything. And as they're running away, all like the three
- 40:05of them are talking over the thing with the shadow and what's probably going on,
- 40:09and they're realizing this probably what happened to Brooke. And eventually as they're
- 40:17running, there is like this, this is this made me so upset.
- 40:24They're running and all of a sudden, this like flame comes out of nowhere.
- 40:31Nami doesn't get got it's just Chopper and us up and they are taken
- 40:38out of the running. They go flying down the stairs that they were heading
- 40:44for. Nami is standing there like, what the hell just happened? And
- 40:49here comes Absalom creeping up like a creepy creep and he kidnaps her, and
- 41:00we of course have to get the obligatory leering shot of like the edge of
- 41:07her skirt as she's struggling against this guy's grip. And later on he like
- 41:14brings her to some room with a little lackey who's puttering around and tells this
- 41:20guy to like put her in her wedding gown, and we have the zombies
- 41:27in the portraits leering down at her waiting for this guy to undress her.
- 41:34And I just it's remarkable to me that we've got animals, we've got zombies,
- 41:42we've got human beings. Nobody is immune to Nami's charms. Even the
- 41:52undead are still out here being fucking perverts. And one in a season titty,
- 41:58and they mentioned explicitly her measurements and it had to be in centimeters because
- 42:07those were very high numbers. I'm like, that does not sound right.
- 42:09But I, y'all, this is going to be the one thing that I
- 42:15say about that. And this is as a young girl who was already at
- 42:22a really really young age dealing with a lot of body image issues. I
- 42:30would hear specific measurements about what the ideal body for women was supposed to be
- 42:36and would struggle and obsess over meeting those ideals. And if I had heard
- 42:42her measurements, I would have been really like, I just would have felt
- 42:49so terrible about myself. And they're like an impossible standard. They're just they're
- 42:53not even needable, and yet it would feel to me like I was somehow
- 42:59failing. And those kinds of jokes, I feel like they're very throwaway line
- 43:05that a lot of people don't think about when it's written. But I can't
- 43:09tell you how they lodge in the minds of young women. They really do.
- 43:15It is not easy to shake. And even things like you know,
- 43:20there's an episode of Twin Peaks that I was recording a while back, and
- 43:24I was they mentioned that this girl is like, you know, five ft
- 43:29one and one hundred pounds. I'm sorry, No, she's not one hundred
- 43:31pounds. You look at her. This is clearly like one hundred and thirty
- 43:36pound woman. It's fine, one hundred pounds just it's no, it's absolutely
- 43:43impossible. But they throw that line now in the show like it's unimportant,
- 43:51And I would have been fixated on the fact that this very beautiful character only
- 43:58weighed one hundred pounds. It would have been like, you know what I'm
- 44:01saying. So I just wish that as a society, we would It would
- 44:08be cool if we just stopped with the leering altogether, but just making particular
- 44:14like statements like this. I we have such a terrible relationship with body image
- 44:23in general. If we could just like steer away from things that feel almost
- 44:30prescriptivist, even though it's not on purpose, that would be great. And
- 44:35also just the fact that she's being leared at while she's unconscious and about to
- 44:38be undressed, like it hate all of this. I want to know where
- 44:43the fuck Lola is because she needs to come and help us out, and
- 44:47there is an attempt by us up to get her back. And even though
- 44:52he's like really not feeling like he's going to be able to actually really accomplish
- 45:00anything, he has to try or else how can he call himself a man?
- 45:06And he uses the weapon that he used as Sniper King, which Chopper
- 45:12notices but doesn't put two and two together. He is looking at him and
- 45:17says, why is he using that weapon? And that's all we get and
- 45:21this doesn't come back up again, and unfortunately what he fires at them,
- 45:29it's weird because like the way the scene goes is supposed to be. I
- 45:34think that since this guy is holding Nami, he vanishes and she vanishes with
- 45:44him, like they both go invisible because he is making contact with her.
- 45:49However, USAP had fired that thing at them, and whether they were invisible
- 45:54or not, it should have still made contact. They were invisible, they
- 46:00weren't incorporeal as far as I understand it, So it's this really weird moment
- 46:07where his like whatever the firestar it seems to kind of fizzle and go away,
- 46:15even though there's no real reason why it wouldn't have still done some damage.
- 46:21And eventually Nami's voice comes from another spot in the room, so it's
- 46:27supposed to be that they have moved, but that's after you see the fizzle,
- 46:34and they take a minute to disappear, like vanish from the spot that
- 46:38they're standing in, and they were still there when it would have hit.
- 46:43So it's just a strange thing where it seems to be like the show is
- 46:47trying to make it like they actually physically vanished from the spot, but that's
- 46:52not what's happening because otherwise this guy couldn't go around invisible and grabbing people because
- 47:00his body is still there. So anyway, this is when a bunch of
- 47:06zombies appear, all of them like us. Up and Chopper are both kind
- 47:09of overwhelmed and I Love us specifically saying this isn't fair you guys. There's
- 47:16way too many of you. You're supposed to come at me one at a
- 47:20time, and one of the guys the zombies is like, man, we
- 47:24just want your shadow. There's no need to totally freak out. It's fine,
- 47:30but oh here, Hey, body, he put his head on me.
- 47:37I'm so sorry everybody, but I think that everybody can agree that when
- 47:42a pupper comes and he puts his head on you and he's not feeling too
- 47:45good, you gotta rub it. It's the required requirement of the pupper.
- 47:52He's so sad. I posted a picture on Facebook of him looking at me
- 47:57with this like really morose expression. He's doing his best, but anyway,
- 48:06Yeah, so us Up attempts to like fight all of them off, and
- 48:10they start like grabbing at him in this really weird way that I was like,
- 48:15this, isn't you trying to get his shadow away from him? You're
- 48:21just like yanking on his person. Which makes a little bit more sense because
- 48:24later on when we're at the Sunny we find we find Lufy and Zoro and
- 48:34Sangi left in place in the like kitchen area with straws and chopsticks and stuff
- 48:44like jammed into their orifices to make them make really dumb faces. And I
- 48:51am just imagining right here where this this bit of them just yanking on his
- 48:57face is just them fucking with him, Like there was no objective, it
- 49:00was just to freak him out. But anyway, they get interrupted by the
- 49:07appearance of Robin and Frankie, who drops salt into the mouths of a bunch
- 49:15of these zombies and they collapse and are taken out. Not all of the
- 49:22ones in this scene are dead, Like, there's a bunch of them that
- 49:24say, oh my god, they know our secret? How did they figure
- 49:28it out? And they start to run. But it's a quite a number
- 49:34you see, Like the black little weird bubble that that goes up into the
- 49:39air, that's the shadow, and there's a good like fifteen of them.
- 49:43I would say that wind up there. So I've pretty much talked about Lufy
- 49:52wanting me as much as I can. Let's talk about real Qui Well.
- 49:59I talked about Brooks like fight against the Swordsman and his frustration at the fact
- 50:06that despite this being fueled by his own shadow, this guy is still beating
- 50:10him. We also have Brooke walking through Killer Bark like all of the forest
- 50:19and trees and whatnot, and he is you, guys, I enjoy a
- 50:27lot the fact that Brooke isn't a fearless character. He gets scared pretty easily.
- 50:38A grasshopper at one point causes him quite a fright but he doesn't completely
- 50:45lose his head the way that like Usop or Chopper do, And when he
- 50:52realizes that he is getting freaked out, he decides that he's going to sing
- 51:00to himself to make himself feel better. And the song he's humming is that
- 51:06like, yo, so spooky you guys like this is him intending to make
- 51:19himself cheer up, but it is the most eerie thing, especially in that
- 51:24setting and coming from his weird hollow skull mouth. So he's humming this and
- 51:30all of these zombies are like, where is that coming from? What's the
- 51:36deal? And he has told himself like I'm not giving up, And he
- 51:40cuts through all these zombies while he's singing this song, and he gets the
- 51:47reputation of the humming Swordsman, despite the fact that at one point they're running
- 51:54away in a crowd and he is like in the crowd with them, like
- 52:00things got so confused that he didn't notice where who he was with. It's
- 52:05such a weird moment, but we see in the aftermath of this that he
- 52:09has really taken out a lot of zombies, and Absalom hears about this and
- 52:15is like what the fuck. So later on, when it is revealed that
- 52:21the Spider Monkey was defeated and that his spirit has left. It's immediately like,
- 52:29oh, that has to be the Humming Swordsman, Like there's nobody else,
- 52:34but now there is because he has shared his knowledge with Frankie and Robin,
- 52:38who tell the rest of the crew. So now everybody knows the secrets
- 52:43out kids. And there is something I really enjoy about the concept of having
- 52:50to face yourself in battle, which is like, what's going on here?
- 52:53It's what if something had your spirit but more physical power. That's like a
- 52:59nightmare scenario. Nobody wants that. I hate that. And I felt so
- 53:04bad for poor Brook, like crashing and burning, because he clearly didn't expect
- 53:08to be taken out so easily. And when we see this like is a
- 53:15flashback, but when we see him going face to face with this guy again,
- 53:21the swordsman, I'm sorry, you guys, what are you doing?
- 53:24Dog? Stop it? I'm sorry, I don't even know what he's got
- 53:30his mouth around, but he whose Swordsman says something like it's gonna be the
- 53:37same as last time. No, not the Afro anything but the Aro.
- 53:44And then you like get to see the moment where he threatens to cut it
- 53:47off and it is like, do you realize how ridiculous this looks to everybody
- 53:52else? And he's like, well, my body has stopped growing, so
- 53:57my afro would never grow back. It would just be gone forever. And
- 54:00he's like, and who the fuck gives a shit? Nobody cares. And
- 54:08I appreciate this, you know, it's like the one part of his body
- 54:13that is at all familiar to him. Still, yeah, you want to
- 54:15recognize up a bit of yourself. So his shadow is calling him like ridiculous
- 54:22and pathetic and it sucks. I felt so bad for him because he is
- 54:27just truly getting schooled and he runs away, but he is determined to take
- 54:35this dude down and get some salt into his mouth and get his shadow back.
- 54:42So yeah, Brooke is really he has his work cut out. So
- 54:49I want to talk like the next episode, which is the last of the
- 54:52three two fifty three, A Man's Promise Never Dies. I talked about the
- 54:59main thrusts of this episode, which is finding out about the thing with Laboon
- 55:04and how it was Brooks's crew that left him behind. We also have the
- 55:13reuniting of everybody on the Sunny I keep wanting to say to marry. But
- 55:22the whole thing with all of them is having to explain like how things work
- 55:28with these shadows and exactly what happened, because like to a degree, they
- 55:30don't remember anything, you know, they have to be told what the danger
- 55:37is, which I find kind of fascinating because like, if just going out
- 55:43into sunlight means that you turn to dust and people don't remember what happened to
- 55:46them, you must have a pretty high rate of losing shadows because people are
- 55:52just not aware that they can't go in the sun like they would just do
- 55:57by a mistake, I would think. But anyway, this is indeed a
- 56:04moment where Lufy finds out that all of the food is gone except for like
- 56:08a bunch of other stuff, which I appreciate Sanji pointing out. He's like,
- 56:13you literally have your mouth full of food and you're whining about how there's
- 56:15no food, But Lufy is like, it's only cheese. I can't believe
- 56:20they only left the cheese, to which I'm like, genuinely surprised they left
- 56:24the cheese, Are you for real? Cheese is like the best and the
- 56:29fact that he has some is extremely lucky. And I will not hear anything
- 56:35against cheese. Sir. I understand your preferences meat, but let's not be
- 56:38disrespectful about it. Okay, keep your head on. And speaking of keeping
- 56:45your head on, Sangi finds out about Nami being kidnapped, and he freaks
- 56:52out to begin with, at the fact that she has been kidnapped at all,
- 56:57that she's not here and get it's very much in usap's face, but
- 57:06when he finds out that the intent is to marry Nami, he loses his
- 57:10entire shit and is basically like, well, I'm going to do absolutely anything
- 57:16I need to do to get her back. And it's as simple as that.
- 57:22So yeah, we know that that's going to be his priority. Lufy's
- 57:27priority is he like mentions Nami first to his credit and then recovering the food
- 57:37that was stolen, and then oh yeah, and I guess our shadows too,
- 57:42and USAP has to be like, well, I really think that we
- 57:45should move the shadows up on the list. Actually, let's focus and he's
- 57:51being, as Zoro puts it a little bit later, all business. And
- 57:54then we have like a cutaway where they explained some stuff to us up and
- 57:59Chop and once they realize that the big bad on this island that they're fighting
- 58:07is one of the great Warlords of the Sea, they both kind of lose
- 58:12a lot of their nerve and say that they didn't know well enough to be
- 58:15scared in the first place the way they should have been, which I don't
- 58:21know, guys, I guess like finding out what his title is just implies
- 58:27that he's capable of even more than you have seen. But I feel like
- 58:30we watch this man rip somebody's shadow off of that they're like body and use
- 58:35it as a means to reawaken dead bodies. I feel like, without knowing
- 58:39that he's a Warlord of the Sea, he's still plenty intimidating. We don't
- 58:44need that title. You should have been just as scared of him anyway.
- 58:47Like, it's just completely fine working with what we've got. That's enough.
- 58:57So let's see. I'm trying to to see if I missed anything in this
- 59:02third episode, because there are a lot of flashbacks because of everything that we
- 59:09find out with Brooke and the whale, and I love that we get the
- 59:16reminder Chopper and Robin weren't with them, so both of them are kind of
- 59:21mystified about everybody else's reaction, but Zoro and Lufy and Oosup and Sanji are
- 59:28all just like, well, I'll be damned, no shit La Boon,
- 59:32and they all know who he is, and they're kind of moved finding out
- 59:37the rest of the story behind all of this, And then we get the
- 59:43another flashback where Lufi has painted the straw hats like skull and crossbones over the
- 59:51scars on the front of La Boom's snout and says, don't rub your head
- 59:55against anything, or you'll wash it off. And I really wonder if he's
- 1:00:00still going to have it on his head when they see him again, because
- 1:00:04he is so I mean, it's been a while, you know, even
- 1:00:07if he doesn't rub his head against things, I would think it would just
- 1:00:09come off anyway. But that is pretty much how the episode ends, is
- 1:00:16like all of them being like, Wow, that's Laboon, Okay, I
- 1:00:22guess we have got to figure out a way to get you back to him.
- 1:00:27And that's it. So I yeah, you guys am still having a
- 1:00:34really good time. I really like the prospect of our friends having to fight
- 1:00:38versions of themselves. One of my favorite bits and this is not mentioned so
- 1:00:47nobody says anything to Sanji. I don't think about what the zombie looked like
- 1:00:57that his spirit is in. But I feel like Sanji is going to take
- 1:01:02real exception to finding out that his spirit was stuck inside this weird dog penguin.
- 1:01:10I think he's going to find that very very insulting. And then we
- 1:01:15have Lufy who describes an encounter with what he thinks was Zoro's shadow and he
- 1:01:22says to Zoro, well, he looked just like you. And then we
- 1:01:27get the slow pan of this fucking creature and I cannot wait for Zoro to
- 1:01:31see it and be like, you think this looks just like me. Basically,
- 1:01:36the way that Lufy frames it is the only reason he could tell that
- 1:01:39it wasn't Zoro was because he was wearing wooden clogs. And I am looking
- 1:01:47forward to that bit. I am also the fact that Chopper notices the weapon
- 1:01:53from Sniper King. I really hope that we're getting a reveal about Lufy or
- 1:01:59about us up being a Sniper King. Really really hoping that's on the horizon

- 1:02:15on the fact that they were sailing away that they didn't realize it was him
- 1:02:22the whole time, But it hasn't come up for him to say anything to
- 1:02:27them about it, which I think is odd. I don't know. I'm
- 1:02:31wondering if maybe they'll be like a mention of something that happened in the battle
- 1:02:35and his lobby and they'll be like, you weren't even there, how do
- 1:02:37you know? And he's going to have to explain. But I really really
- 1:02:40want that moment and it's been a long time. Where is it? Where
- 1:02:44is it? Where is it? All right? Everybody? Thank you all
- 1:02:49so much for coming, hanging out listening. I appreciate you all and hope
- 1:02:52you're enjoying the content. Until next time to the loom. Motherfucker's That was
