- 0:17Speaker 1: Sign sex name don Oger. Are with me as we're
- 0:19Speaker 1: going to recap the Combine for you from last week
- 0:22Speaker 1: and also talk a little bit about free agency, which
- 0:24Speaker 1: is about a week away at this point. So let's
- 0:26Speaker 1: start out with our big things today. First big thing
- 0:28Speaker 1: is first impressions GM. James Gladstone was introduced to us
- 0:32Speaker 1: last week and kick things off right away by heading
- 0:35Speaker 1: to the Combine and getting to work. And he's talking
- 0:37Speaker 1: a little bit to us about what it's going to
- 0:39Speaker 1: be like getting integrated with his new.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Team in terms of you know, what you may say
- 0:45Speaker 2: is me getting up to speed. I'm going to calibrate
- 0:48Speaker 2: my own mode of operation to the jaguars current mode
- 0:50Speaker 2: of operation. One person changing rather than a large group
- 0:54Speaker 2: changing in the immediate immediate mode is going to be
- 0:57Speaker 2: a little bit more efficient and less disruptive.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Brian, there's a lot of new faces around here right now.
- 1:03Speaker 1: They are all in Indianapolis last week getting to work together.
- 1:05Speaker 1: What are your first impressions of James Gladstone from what
- 1:07Speaker 1: we've seen so far?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Well, I told Jeff Logerman during our live broadcast before
- 1:12Speaker 3: his introductor press conference that I had talked to a
- 1:14Speaker 3: friend who used to work here, who now works there?
- 1:17Speaker 3: Who said that James Gladstone in a building filled with stars,
- 1:20Speaker 3: great people, very successful people, that RAMS organization has produced
- 1:25Speaker 3: a spider web of people all across the NFL because
- 1:28Speaker 3: of the way they do things. But that Gladstone in
- 1:30Speaker 3: a building filled with stars who shined is bright or.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Brighter than almost all of them.
- 1:35Speaker 3: And the more that you listen to him and get
- 1:38Speaker 3: a feel for a thirty four year old guy with
- 1:41Speaker 3: the presence, with the wisdom to say what he just said,
- 1:46Speaker 3: it just it verifies what I was told that the
- 1:48Speaker 3: guy is made for this position. And no one out
- 1:50Speaker 3: there in LA expects anything but incredible success from Gladstone.
- 1:55Speaker 4: So that's good to hear.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Yeah, he's really really really sharp. I mean and talking
- 1:59Speaker 5: to him a couple of times the combine. Uh, the
- 2:02Speaker 5: thing that stands out is his ability to communicate, and
- 2:05Speaker 5: it's it's difficult to overemphasize that trait in a GM.
- 2:11Speaker 5: His ability to take an idea, a concept, a trait
- 2:14Speaker 5: that he wants in a player and make it so
- 2:16Speaker 5: everybody in the organization clearly understands what a team is
- 2:19Speaker 5: looking for.
- 2:20Speaker 6: Uh.
- 2:21Speaker 5: That goes to messaging, it goes to player trait, et cetera,
- 2:24Speaker 5: et cetera.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Uh I I it's uh h, he's going.
- 2:28Speaker 5: To be really really good at this and you know
- 2:30Speaker 5: it that doesn't guarantee results on the field, but and
- 2:33Speaker 5: you know, because nothing does, but I H. This guy's
- 2:36Speaker 5: communication skills along with Liam Cohen's uh energy focus, uh
- 2:42Speaker 5: it gives you organization a chance.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Let's go to our second big thing today, which is
- 2:45Speaker 1: gonna be hunkered down when we're talking about getting things going,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know, hitting the ground running with them.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Of course, James Gladstone.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Talked a little bit about with the new EVP Tony Bsseli,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and of course new head coach Lilliam Cohen, all of
- 2:56Speaker 1: them traveled to Indianapolis together, had a hunkered down right.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The fact that we're a new coaching staff, a new
- 3:03Speaker 2: general manager working with our scouting staff, this is a
- 3:06Speaker 2: great opportunity for an off site and just build some
- 3:08Speaker 2: of the connective kissue that otherwise wouldn't necessarily exist because
- 3:12Speaker 2: we'd just be in our normal mode of operation in Jacksonville.
- 3:17Speaker 1: John, you always send a team, if you work for
- 3:19Speaker 1: a team, you always send some people to the combine.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But they pretty much send everybody from the new front
- 3:23Speaker 1: office out there to kind of work together and get
- 3:25Speaker 1: things going.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Yeah, they did, and I'm not sure how long they
- 3:28Speaker 5: will do it this way. The Rams historically don't go
- 3:31Speaker 5: to the combine except for a small number of people,
- 3:33Speaker 5: so maybe that's the Jaguars approach going forward.
- 3:36Speaker 6: I think this approach this year was about, Okay, we
- 3:38Speaker 6: need to go to the combine. We need to get
- 3:39Speaker 6: this thing established.
- 3:41Speaker 5: They also looked at it as very much let's move
- 3:44Speaker 5: the facilities out there, let's move the workforce out there,
- 3:48Speaker 5: as a chance for everybody to get to know each other,
- 3:50Speaker 5: to build some camaraderie, to build some chemistry.
- 3:54Speaker 6: A very expensive team building, if you will.
- 3:57Speaker 5: But I think that's important at this stage, and they
- 3:59Speaker 5: were certainly approaching it like that.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Well it's listen, it's every day now that they're back, kay.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I mean, these guys are here in the building and
- 4:08Speaker 3: they're working late nights, in early mornings some Saturdays and Sundays.
- 4:12Speaker 3: It's hard to take a day off when you have
- 4:14Speaker 3: as much coming at them as is coming at them.
- 4:17Speaker 3: You mentioned free agency begins next week, and then you're
- 4:19Speaker 3: going to have guys who are out on the pro
- 4:22Speaker 3: day tour and before you know it, you'll have the
- 4:25Speaker 3: off not off the field, the out of season program
- 4:29Speaker 3: right where the guys are back in. I think April
- 4:30Speaker 3: seventh is when that starts, and then the draft and
- 4:32Speaker 3: the OTAs. They have a lot of ground to cover
- 4:35Speaker 3: in a very short period of time. So that was
- 4:38Speaker 3: just the jump start to getting guys you know who
- 4:40Speaker 3: each individual person is, kind of names and faces. Because
- 4:44Speaker 3: now the real work begins to get ready.
- 4:47Speaker 1: That leads us into our final big thing, which is
- 4:48Speaker 1: free agency. We've talked about all the changes in the
- 4:50Speaker 1: off season, and now free agency is upon us about
- 4:52Speaker 1: a week away at this point. So Brian, when you're
- 4:55Speaker 1: looking at what the players are going to be in
- 4:57Speaker 1: this because in the past the Jaguars have had to
- 4:59Speaker 1: do a lot a free agency, but now with a
- 5:01Speaker 1: new coaching staff, you might have to address the needs
- 5:03Speaker 1: as well. So do we have any inkling of which
- 5:05Speaker 1: way they might be going with that?
- 5:06Speaker 6: Not really.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I mean, listen, the DNA of this organization has been
- 5:10Speaker 3: to use free agency to build the roster, but all
- 5:14Speaker 3: at the same time professing they didn't want to do
- 5:17Speaker 3: it that way.
- 5:17Speaker 4: The most successful.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Teams in the last ten years, fifteen years, maybe the
- 5:22Speaker 3: modern era of the NFL have built through the draft.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Now you're talking about a very strong Rams presence in
- 5:29Speaker 3: the building now, and they're asymmetrical thinkers. I mean, they
- 5:32Speaker 3: were trading first round picks to grab veteran guys. We
- 5:34Speaker 3: know about Jalen Ramsey and many many others, Dante Fowler,
- 5:37Speaker 3: junior players who ended up out there. So it'll be
- 5:40Speaker 3: interesting to see how it evolves. It'll depend on their
- 5:43Speaker 3: evaluation of the roster. Do there a couple guys here
- 5:46Speaker 3: they could move with. They've got some room they could
- 5:48Speaker 3: play if they want. I just don't know whether they
- 5:50Speaker 3: want to or not.
- 5:51Speaker 5: John, Yeah, I think they'll They'll have a plan. They'll
- 5:54Speaker 5: go after some guys, some trades.
- 5:58Speaker 6: It's important.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Remember the Rams did what Brian talking about when they
- 6:01Speaker 5: were going after it, and they feel like they were
- 6:03Speaker 5: close to the Super Bowl. I don't think the Jaguars
- 6:06Speaker 5: will necessarily try to build the roster that way. When
- 6:09Speaker 5: Gladstone talked philosophically at the combine last week, he talked
- 6:12Speaker 5: for He talked far more about the fact that the
- 6:15Speaker 5: Jaguars have more draft picks in the next two years
- 6:17Speaker 5: and any other team he likes that. I think he's
- 6:20Speaker 5: gonna lean toward that. No team really wants to build
- 6:23Speaker 5: their roster through free agency. It's when you don't draft
- 6:26Speaker 5: and develop well that you wind up having to. So
- 6:29Speaker 5: I think you will see freedency use this year to
- 6:31Speaker 5: make up for some roster holes they need.
- 6:35Speaker 6: They need to address quickly.
- 6:37Speaker 5: But I think overall it's gonna try to be draft
- 6:39Speaker 5: and developed that they just have to draft.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Well, just draft well, it's easy enough. It sounds that way. Anyway, Staylas,
- 6:45Speaker 1: We're gonna talk a little bit about what went down
- 6:46Speaker 1: at the combine last week.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know what, one of the most alluring and intriguing
- 7:02Speaker 2: pieces to this opportunity was the fact that the leadership
- 7:05Speaker 2: group and the dynamic actually mirrors what I'm most familiar
- 7:08Speaker 2: with in Los Angeles.
- 7:09Speaker 6: So it was one that I.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Could see a clear visual for finding success.
- 7:13Speaker 4: So really excited about.
- 7:15Speaker 2: The opportunity to work with Tony and Liam and support
- 7:18Speaker 2: both of them and bring Liam's vision to life here
- 7:21Speaker 2: in these next few weeks into the later portion of
- 7:24Speaker 2: the spring, through the draft to your.
- 7:26Speaker 6: General manager games.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Last on the final piece of this front office puzzle
- 7:30Speaker 1: that they've been putting together for the last couple of
- 7:32Speaker 1: months at this point.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Excited to all be.
- 7:35Speaker 1: In place now, Brian, I think we finally know where
- 7:36Speaker 1: everything is going and now we can kind of get
- 7:38Speaker 1: everything pushed.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Off that way.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah, they've got a plan and he's mentioned it, We've
- 7:41Speaker 3: all talked about it. We don't know exactly what the
- 7:43Speaker 3: plan is at this point, but.
- 7:45Speaker 4: They're figuring their way out.
- 7:46Speaker 3: John, You figure the most important thing for them to
- 7:48Speaker 3: be doing right now is to have a full evaluation
- 7:52Speaker 3: of the roster. What each of these individual coaches thinks
- 7:55Speaker 3: about what he's got.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's a lot of what last week was about.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Meaning the coaching had clearly grinded through the roster in
- 8:03Speaker 5: the week or so before the Combine, and then at
- 8:06Speaker 5: the Combine last week there was a lot of meetings about, Okay,
- 8:11Speaker 5: this is the roster, this is the free agency plan.
- 8:13Speaker 5: How do you get that going with the draft preparations.
- 8:17Speaker 5: It's important to note that and Glassow and Cohen both
- 8:19Speaker 5: went into this deep last week. This is about the
- 8:22Speaker 5: schedule that most teams have when you start getting ready
- 8:26Speaker 5: for free agency. With the combine, the cram for the
- 8:29Speaker 5: test phase, so to speak, is them digging into their
- 8:34Speaker 5: own roster. The coaches trying to figure out, Okay, this
- 8:37Speaker 5: is what we have. It's encouraging. I think that Tony
- 8:43Speaker 5: BISSELLI yesterday when I was talking to him for the Tony.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Biselli podcast, the EVP podcast Call It said Gladstone's interpretation
- 8:51Speaker 7: of the roster already was dead on, very in line
- 8:55Speaker 7: with what Tony had seen.
- 8:59Speaker 6: And Tony is, I guess, really the guy in the
- 9:02Speaker 6: unique position.
- 9:03Speaker 5: He has some muscle memory on these guys, the ability
- 9:08Speaker 5: to absorb what they've done over the course of time.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Or has everybody else is sort of cramming for the test.
- 9:12Speaker 1: How much should be made of We talk about each
- 9:15Speaker 1: of them reporting to the owner separately, right, so it's
- 9:18Speaker 1: maybe not a typical power dynamic of reporting to your.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Boss and reporting up.
- 9:22Speaker 1: They all kind of will report to Shad Khan and
- 9:25Speaker 1: is there something he said for that or if you're
- 9:26Speaker 1: all actually kind of working together on the same page,
- 9:29Speaker 1: hopefully there's not a ton of infighting that you really
- 9:31Speaker 1: need to be going around each other.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Well, they were very deliberate in their timeline to grab
- 9:37Speaker 3: the right general manager because it was pretty clear, I mean,
- 9:39Speaker 3: Liam is the leader over here in terms of football,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and Tony's gonna handle football operations, and Sead said at
- 9:46Speaker 3: the introductor news conference last week that what he was
- 9:48Speaker 3: really looking for was a group of three guys who
- 9:50Speaker 3: could work together so he didn't have to be the
- 9:53Speaker 3: guy who.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Was the thread.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And at various times he has had to be that guy.
- 9:56Speaker 3: So I guess that Gladstone coming in and the aliberate
- 10:00Speaker 3: way that they went about finding the right guy means
- 10:02Speaker 3: that those three men will be able to put their
- 10:05Speaker 3: finger on the right moves, whether it's free agency, the draft,
- 10:09Speaker 3: the execution from a football operation standpoint, and all three
- 10:12Speaker 3: will communicate to the owner, who's not going to necessarily
- 10:15Speaker 3: be that common thread like he has been in the past.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Yeah, there's certainly this plan works until you're oh to
- 10:22Speaker 5: thirteen and everybody's like mad at each other. That's sort
- 10:27Speaker 5: of the cynicists or cynical person's point of view. But
- 10:33Speaker 5: I thought Cohen said it best last week when he said, look,
- 10:37Speaker 5: if we're grinding through and talking about a player and
- 10:40Speaker 5: we just can't find middle ground, this is clearly the
- 10:43Speaker 5: way the rams work. Because Glaston said a couple of times,
- 10:46Speaker 5: well then we move on from the player, and I
- 10:49Speaker 5: think that makes the most sense the Coen's going to
- 10:51Speaker 5: be coaching the team.
- 10:52Speaker 6: Glastone won't be involved with that.
- 10:54Speaker 5: So this, you know, final say thing comes down to
- 10:58Speaker 5: those rare occasions, and it doesn't happen that often, even
- 11:01Speaker 5: when guys aren't getting along, when you just can't agree.
- 11:04Speaker 5: And I think they both saw with the Rams that
- 11:08Speaker 5: you can get to a certain point and then you
- 11:10Speaker 5: get a feeling of you know what, if we're at
- 11:13Speaker 5: odds about this guy, then he's not going to work here.
- 11:17Speaker 6: It doesn't make any sense. So I think it works fine.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Look, it became a storyline in the early nineties when
- 11:22Speaker 3: Bill Parcells left the Giants and went to the Patriots.
- 11:24Speaker 3: He had a general manager everywhere he was and he
- 11:26Speaker 3: uttered the famous line, if I'm going to cook the meal,
- 11:29Speaker 3: I should be able to go and buy the groceries.
- 11:31Speaker 3: And at various times that's worked. The model that really
- 11:35Speaker 3: has worked is what's worked in Kansas City in recent years,
- 11:37Speaker 3: and that is that Andy Reard hired Brent Viach, who
- 11:40Speaker 3: is his GM, and he gets him the players that
- 11:42Speaker 3: he wants.
- 11:43Speaker 4: That's the model that works. However they structure.
- 11:46Speaker 3: It, reporting to the owner. Liam had a strong say
- 11:50Speaker 3: in who the general manager was going to be because
- 11:52Speaker 3: those two men had to be able to communicate about
- 11:54Speaker 3: exactly the players he wanted to make the system. John said,
- 11:57Speaker 3: Liam's coaching the team. Gladstone's job to bring him the
- 12:00Speaker 3: players that he wants.
- 12:02Speaker 5: I think the phrase coach centric organization which has kicked around,
- 12:05Speaker 5: and SHOT's really talked about that really now since the
- 12:08Speaker 5: urban Meyer higher that, you know that's what he wants.
- 12:13Speaker 6: It's certainly what Bisselli believes he's here to do.
- 12:17Speaker 5: He said any number of times, I'm the left tackle
- 12:21Speaker 5: of the organization. I'm here to support what's going on.
- 12:24Speaker 5: And I think that's really the spirit of what Gladstone
- 12:27Speaker 5: and b Besselli are.
- 12:27Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:27Speaker 3: The other thing about Tony is he's a common sense guy, right.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I mean he understands people, knowing from happy hour with
- 12:33Speaker 3: Pete where the two were, you know, butt heads in
- 12:35Speaker 3: battle and spar verbally. But Tony's a guy who can
- 12:39Speaker 3: bring consensus to a room as well. I've seen it
- 12:40Speaker 3: over time. He's a guy who can sit in there
- 12:42Speaker 3: and talk through some things. He's got a little diplomat
- 12:46Speaker 3: in him. People don't give him credit for that.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I think it's the offensive lineman in him.
- 12:49Speaker 6: You got to get everybody on the same page together.
- 12:52Speaker 3: In the Jaggars Golden Ear, he was the leader in
- 12:54Speaker 3: the locker room, not the quarterback, not the receiver, and
- 12:56Speaker 3: no one on defense. Tony Boselli was the leader, and
- 12:59Speaker 3: he understood that he had to set the tone, and
- 13:01Speaker 3: at times in this new arrangement, there may be times
- 13:04Speaker 3: where he has to help bring everyone together for the
- 13:06Speaker 3: common tone.
- 13:07Speaker 1: We're talking a little bit about James Gladston because he's
- 13:09Speaker 1: the newest addition to this thirty four years old. Obviously
- 13:12Speaker 1: it's a youth movement all around here in Jacksonville right now, John,
- 13:15Speaker 1: did you hear anything at the combine? Obviously you don't
- 13:17Speaker 1: hear a ton about front office people until they take
- 13:19Speaker 1: over as a GM somewhere.
- 13:21Speaker 6: So what have we heard so.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Far about him?
- 13:22Speaker 5: Well, basically that what you see in the press conferences
- 13:28Speaker 5: is what he is meaning. Sean McVay was on the
- 13:30Speaker 5: Pat McAfee show and pretty insightful in terms of saying
- 13:36Speaker 5: exactly what we've already said about James Gladstone, his ability
- 13:39Speaker 5: to communicate. I think Shawn's quote was I could just
- 13:44Speaker 5: sit in the room and listen to this guy, and
- 13:45Speaker 5: you can kind of see that when he's on the podium,
- 13:48Speaker 5: even though he's only thirty four. He has an interesting
- 13:53Speaker 5: way of talking about things. It's easy to see how
- 13:56Speaker 5: if you're a wide receivers coach or an area scout,
- 14:00Speaker 5: you sit and you listen to this guy and you
- 14:02Speaker 5: know what he's talking about. And that's really the important
- 14:06Speaker 5: trade of this general manager position. That person has to
- 14:09Speaker 5: make sure that everybody who's involved with talent acquisition with
- 14:13Speaker 5: direction understands what we're looking for in a special team
- 14:18Speaker 5: or in an offensive alignment, and they also be on
- 14:20Speaker 5: the same page.
- 14:21Speaker 6: That's not that easy to do.
- 14:23Speaker 5: It's a job of intelligence, player evaluation, but more than anything,
- 14:31Speaker 5: it's a job of communication because you're dealing with a
- 14:33Speaker 5: lot of moving parts.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I had it explained to me by somebody in Los
- 14:35Speaker 3: Angeles who said that he is where he is because
- 14:39Speaker 3: he was never scared to step into a challenging situation
- 14:42Speaker 3: that maybe exceeded his skill set when he got there
- 14:45Speaker 3: in twenty sixteen and went out there with less need,
- 14:48Speaker 3: and it quickly became apparent that he could work his
- 14:51Speaker 3: way through situations that were maybe beyond him at the point,
- 14:56Speaker 3: and he raced to this point where he now nine
- 14:58Speaker 3: years later, is the general manager because he is able
- 15:01Speaker 3: to see situations for what they are and work right
- 15:04Speaker 3: through them. He always took on the big challenge, and.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It's gonna be a challenge.
- 15:08Speaker 6: It's gonna be a good challenge. Stay with here on JAGSZAM.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Coming up after the break, we'll talk a little bit
- 15:12Speaker 1: about free agency and the draft and what.
- 15:14Speaker 6: The focuses might be for the Jacks.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Well in the coolest office space in Jacksonville's the fly
- 15:23Speaker 1: online at Magellan Logistics dot com.
- 15:29Speaker 8: He's so dynamic, being able to move him around where
- 15:33Speaker 8: you saw him at LSU, maybe not do some of
- 15:35Speaker 8: those things right where he was mostly outside running more
- 15:38Speaker 8: linear routes, vertical posts, some overs and then this stop,
- 15:43Speaker 8: you know, so the ability for him to snap down,
- 15:46Speaker 8: get in the slot, be able to run some of
- 15:48Speaker 8: the choice routes, lookie routes, and then oh, by the way,
- 15:51Speaker 8: you can throw him a screen and he can go
- 15:53Speaker 8: do something with it. You know, our past game will
- 15:56Speaker 8: run through him. And super excited to get to work
- 15:59Speaker 8: with him.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I mean you have to be excited to get to
- 16:02Speaker 1: work with Brian Thomas Junior. Obviously, Liam Colin talking about
- 16:04Speaker 1: BTJ and what he's gonna be able to do with
- 16:06Speaker 1: him going forward. I'm excited to see his second season
- 16:08Speaker 1: as well, cause we saw him develop as the season
- 16:10Speaker 1: went along. Maybe that second half even with Mac Jones
- 16:12Speaker 1: at quarterback when he was able to do. Second year
- 16:15Speaker 1: is gonna be fun. Well, working with Trevor Lawrence consistently,
- 16:18Speaker 1: it would be fun. I mean, if you look back
- 16:20Speaker 1: at Trevor, he is good at throwing the deep ball,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and we saw a few of those shots with Brian
- 16:24Speaker 1: last year, the one in particular against the Patriots at Wembley.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 3: W When you consider what Brian was able to do
- 16:32Speaker 3: with Mac, who does not have the deep ball accuracy
- 16:35Speaker 3: or even the deep bowl arm that Trevor does, it's
- 16:37Speaker 3: easy to get excited.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 5: And then there was the play against the Colts here
- 16:40Speaker 5: when he basically showed everybody how he can separate and
- 16:43Speaker 5: uh hit that second gear clearly at as Liam said,
- 16:48Speaker 5: the offense.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Will run through him.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Uh, they have a potential franchise quarterback and a franchise
- 16:54Speaker 5: wide receiver to work with.
- 16:55Speaker 6: Uh. That's a good start.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Alright, We're gonna do a little dis or that right now.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And we're gonna go through some position groups and do
- 17:01Speaker 1: this or that with draft or free agency. So we're
- 17:04Speaker 1: looking at wide receivers. Obviously BTJ is going to be
- 17:06Speaker 1: your number one. You're going to run the offense through him.
- 17:09Speaker 1: But who's going to be surrounded Who's going to be
- 17:11Speaker 1: surrounding him? There's questions about whether Christian Kirk will be
- 17:13Speaker 1: here or not. Are you going to look at maybe
- 17:16Speaker 1: possibly drafting someone Brian. If you're looking at the wide
- 17:18Speaker 1: receiver groups, where do you want to see additions there.
- 17:20Speaker 6: Or none at all?
- 17:22Speaker 3: Well, not knowing what's going to happen with Christian. Even
- 17:24Speaker 3: at Evan Ingram, who I know he's a tight end,
- 17:26Speaker 3: but let's be honest, he's a receiver. He had one
- 17:28Speaker 3: hundred and fourteen receptions in twenty twenty three draft right
- 17:31Speaker 3: there are because of the way the college football plays now,
- 17:35Speaker 3: there are receivers throughout the draft, whether you're talking about
- 17:39Speaker 3: a star at the top of the first round or
- 17:41Speaker 3: you know, finding a good player somewhere in the middle round.
- 17:45Speaker 3: You've got a lot of money tied up in Christian
- 17:46Speaker 3: Kirk and if he's going to be here draft draft.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Draft, Yeah, I hope both Christian and Evan are here.
- 17:54Speaker 5: For the purposes of this question, let's assume they're not,
- 17:57Speaker 5: because you have to have some sort of parameters. I
- 17:59Speaker 5: to answer the quest question, I think if they're not,
- 18:02Speaker 5: then I think you could see an element of both
- 18:05Speaker 5: a receiver, meaning either a relatively high profile free agent
- 18:11Speaker 5: lower receiver or vice versa. If I had to lean,
- 18:15Speaker 5: I would say probably a mid tier receiver who they
- 18:19Speaker 5: feel like can get can fill a role, and then
- 18:23Speaker 5: maybe draft the position in the first three rounds ish,
- 18:28Speaker 5: because I think coming from the Rams, I think there's
- 18:32Speaker 5: probably a belief with these guys we can get Cooper
- 18:36Speaker 5: cup ish player. They've had success in later rounds. So
- 18:41Speaker 5: my guess is, without talking to them specifically, that they
- 18:45Speaker 5: feel like receiver can be acquired in that range.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Receivers become a premium position and as such they are expensive,
- 18:52Speaker 3: which is why I would lean into the draft on
- 18:55Speaker 3: that one.
- 18:55Speaker 1: A lot of these options can be expensive. We've talked
- 18:57Speaker 1: a ton about the lines on both sides. The trenches
- 19:00Speaker 1: need to get better. When you're looking at offensive line
- 19:02Speaker 1: and defensive line. That could be a focus at five
- 19:05Speaker 1: in the first round. For we don't know exactly where
- 19:07Speaker 1: they're going to go with that yet, but you need
- 19:09Speaker 1: depth on both of those positions. I think it's fair
- 19:12Speaker 1: to say. So, is this a combination of both or
- 19:14Speaker 1: do you think it just has to be draft?
- 19:16Speaker 3: Well, listen, it's a really good draft for defensive tackles,
- 19:19Speaker 3: and not just at the top of the draft. There
- 19:21Speaker 3: are good tackle options, you know, into the second and
- 19:23Speaker 3: even the third round from what I'm hearing. So I
- 19:26Speaker 3: would lean on the defensive side too. Young, You've got
- 19:28Speaker 3: a couple of young guys that you want to develop already,
- 19:31Speaker 3: and you know you still have Devon Hamilton here draft
- 19:34Speaker 3: there offensive line, I would look for some veteran presence. Now,
- 19:38Speaker 3: keep in mind the Jaguars drafted Brandon Linder in the
- 19:41Speaker 3: third round and he was an eight year starter here
- 19:43Speaker 3: and a really good player. You can find those guys
- 19:46Speaker 3: in the middle rounds if you do your due diligence.
- 19:49Speaker 3: But you're probably going to want to find a couple
- 19:51Speaker 3: of those guys in free agency as well. And guards
- 19:54Speaker 3: are not necessarily as expensive, so you can do some
- 19:57Speaker 3: work there in free agency.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Yeah, Unfortunately, only if you're gonna get great top of
- 20:02Speaker 5: the market guy.
- 20:03Speaker 6: They're all expensive, But do you need that.
- 20:06Speaker 3: I mean, you want that, but do you need to
- 20:07Speaker 3: go pay the top of the market. Do you need
- 20:09Speaker 3: aj Can kind of guy who is a moderate price player.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 5: I think on the interior of the line, they need
- 20:15Speaker 5: somebody to come in and be a presence and be
- 20:18Speaker 5: I think what.
- 20:19Speaker 6: They hoped that Sheriff would be.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Scheff was a decent player here past his prime, I think,
- 20:25Speaker 5: but a solid play for three years, but didn't necessarily
- 20:29Speaker 5: dominate the middle personality wise, didn't dominate locker room. I
- 20:33Speaker 5: think you'd like to find that in free agency, so
- 20:35Speaker 5: you have some immediate presence. Defensive line feels like, you know,
- 20:42Speaker 5: everybody's Maulk and Mason Graham.
- 20:43Speaker 6: It feels like that has a good chance to be
- 20:45Speaker 6: the pick.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Interesting, you wonder how long term they're going to develop
- 20:50Speaker 5: the tackle position. I don't know that they go a
- 20:53Speaker 5: premium there. At some point.
- 20:56Speaker 6: You wonder how they're going to build that long term,
- 20:58Speaker 6: but that's to be played out.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Things.
- 21:00Speaker 3: You look at the best tackles at the top of
- 21:01Speaker 3: this draft and everyone's questioning whether they belong inside a
- 21:04Speaker 3: guard or not, whether they're tall enough or have the
- 21:05Speaker 3: length to play there.
- 21:06Speaker 4: This is not a good draft.
- 21:07Speaker 3: For tackles, but it is a good draft for interior
- 21:09Speaker 3: off fancy alignement, which.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Is what we need.
- 21:11Speaker 4: So perhaps that's the pick.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Not that all right.
- 21:14Speaker 1: A final position in group we're gonna go with is
- 21:16Speaker 1: defensive back, safety and corner. Obviously, corner depth was an
- 21:19Speaker 1: issue this year. Safety Andre Cisco's becoming a free agency,
- 21:22Speaker 1: so there might be an opening there if they don't
- 21:23Speaker 1: resign him. Do you think this is a free agency
- 21:26Speaker 1: drafting situation? Where do you think they'll go with this?
- 21:28Speaker 6: John, Yes, all the things. Yeah, because they've got I mean,
- 21:32Speaker 6: they have a lot of work to do. I mean it's.
- 21:35Speaker 5: You could see potentially, I Jerion Jones and Tyson Campbell
- 21:40Speaker 5: are the guys that I know out of a group
- 21:43Speaker 5: that was there last.
- 21:44Speaker 6: Year, will be on the field.
- 21:45Speaker 5: I think some of the other guys will compete and
- 21:48Speaker 5: maybe one of them will be in it.
- 21:51Speaker 6: But I think they've got a lot of work to do, so.
- 21:54Speaker 5: A second, third round, one first tearish guy in free agency.
- 22:00Speaker 5: It's I'm not trying to avoid the question, but I
- 22:03Speaker 5: think when you've got corner depth, corner meaning fourth maybe
- 22:08Speaker 5: two safeties, I don't quite know how to say where
- 22:12Speaker 5: they'll go with what I think they may let the
- 22:14Speaker 5: draft come to him and free agency come to him
- 22:16Speaker 5: because it's sort of you have to throw some resources here.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah, well, listen, we don't know if the Jaggers are
- 22:22Speaker 3: going to stay five. They might get an offer and
- 22:24Speaker 3: they could move back if someone wants to come up
- 22:26Speaker 3: and get a cornerback. You know, the Raiders are shitting
- 22:28Speaker 3: at six. Maybe this is a spot where the Jags
- 22:30Speaker 3: can move back, and there are some first round safeties,
- 22:32Speaker 3: some elite level guys. I would like the Cisco of
- 22:36Speaker 3: twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three back the guy
- 22:39Speaker 3: who played here last year. I mean, listen, he had
- 22:42Speaker 3: all the motivation in the world to go out and
- 22:43Speaker 3: have a big year because they didn't pay him and
- 22:45Speaker 3: he didn't do it. So I fully expect them to
- 22:48Speaker 3: let him walk, which means they're going to have to
- 22:50Speaker 3: go find a guy.
- 22:51Speaker 1: There are some options in free agencies, so I'm sure
- 22:53Speaker 1: they'll dabble in that a little bit. And we'll talk
- 22:55Speaker 1: a little bit more next week about who they might
- 22:56Speaker 1: be targeting, specifically, say with us and Jagszam coming up
- 22:59Speaker 1: after the break, we'll talk a little bit about what's
- 23:01Speaker 1: going on the runs the week Jack xam brought to
- 23:10Speaker 1: me by Prush from Florida. It's always in season.
- 23:15Speaker 8: The development of Baker will be different than Trevor. It
- 23:19Speaker 8: just will be because of the different type of player.
- 23:22Speaker 8: But you see a lot of the same in tangibles
- 23:25Speaker 8: in terms of the work ethic, the want to he
- 23:28Speaker 8: wants to be great, he wants to be coach hard,
- 23:30Speaker 8: and the process like, how do we get him on
- 23:33Speaker 8: a schedule, a process every single day that he can
- 23:37Speaker 8: follow to get him to the point that he feels
- 23:39Speaker 8: like he's playing at a higher level.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And con talking a little bit about what it was
- 23:44Speaker 1: like working with Baker Mayfield, but how it's going to
- 23:46Speaker 1: be different working with Tyber Lawrence, and you know they
- 23:48Speaker 1: want to get in the building kind of go over
- 23:49Speaker 1: the xs and o's. There are some limitations to that,
- 23:51Speaker 1: John with when they can meet, we'll see this probably
- 23:54Speaker 1: hit the ground a little bit more in April.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Yeah, they can talk minimally because you're allowed to talk
- 24:02Speaker 5: to human beings. But in terms of any sort of
- 24:06Speaker 5: football real game planning meeting, anything like that, that starts
- 24:11Speaker 5: up when the off season program, and that's plenty of time.
- 24:14Speaker 5: I mean, that's but that'll be when the fun starts.
- 24:18Speaker 6: You know.
- 24:18Speaker 3: One of the reasons why Baker Mayfield was able to
- 24:21Speaker 3: take that big jump last year was because the Buccaneers
- 24:24Speaker 3: running game went from bottom five to top five, right,
- 24:27Speaker 3: So we were talking about offensive line and getting that right,
- 24:29Speaker 3: getting the running game going, and they proved it last
- 24:33Speaker 3: year in Tampaly. Improved what he can do. I'm gonna
- 24:35Speaker 3: be really interested in that. I know we talked about
- 24:37Speaker 3: Brian Thomas and wide receivers and you know that's the
- 24:39Speaker 3: sexy talk in the NFL these days, but that ground
- 24:42Speaker 3: game is going to be really important for the coach
- 24:44Speaker 3: to get the quarterback where he wants to.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Be and being able to rely on that consistently in
- 24:48Speaker 1: every game will be.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Here, which we have not had around here in a while.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Yeah, Gladstone at the combine didn't reveal everything they're going
- 24:54Speaker 5: to do, obviously because you don't, but he did sort
- 24:57Speaker 5: of open the hand a little bit when asked about
- 25:00Speaker 5: the roster. He said, you know, the guys in the
- 25:03Speaker 5: trenches I'm paraphrasing, and guys who can score, So you know,
- 25:08Speaker 5: sort of keep that in mind when trying to figure
- 25:10Speaker 5: out free agency in the.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Draft, free agency begins on Monday. Things open up, they
- 25:15Speaker 1: can start talking. We'll announce things on Wednesday, and on
- 25:17Speaker 1: Tuesday we'll be in here to talk to you about
- 25:19Speaker 1: what we think the Jacks might do.
- 25:20Speaker 6: Enjoy your week,
