- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm your host Andrew McGivern for September 22nd.
- 0:12Today is Hobbit Day. September 22nd marks the shared
- 0:17birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, 2 of the most beloved
- 0:21characters from JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth saga.
- 0:25According to Tolkien's fictional timeline, both these hobbits
- 0:29were born today, Bilbo in the year 2890 of the Third Age, and
- 0:36his nephew Frodo in 2968. The American Tolkien Society
- 0:41first proclaimed Hobbit Day in 1978, and it's celebrated as
- 0:46part of Tolkien Week. What makes this holiday special
- 0:51is that it honors not just these fictional characters, but the
- 0:55values they represent courage in the face of overwhelming odds,
- 1:01the importance of friendship, and the power of ordinary people
- 1:05to do extraordinary things. Hobbits, as Tolkien described
- 1:12them, are simple folk who love comfort, good food, and peaceful
- 1:15lives. Yet when adventure calls, they
- 1:19prove that heroism isn't just about size or strength.
- 1:24It's about heart, determination, and doing what's right, even
- 1:30when it's difficult. Today's quote comes from JRR
- 1:34Tolkien himself, who wrote It's the job That's never started as
- 1:41takes longest to finish. Tolkien's observation captures
- 1:46something fundamental about both his Hobbit characters and our
- 1:51own lives. Throughout The Hobbit and The
- 1:55Lord of the Rings, we see characters facing seemingly
- 1:58impossible tasks, destroying a powerful ring, reclaiming a
- 2:04mountain Kingdom, or simply getting home safely.
- 2:09What makes hobbits such compelling heroes is that they
- 2:13don't overthink these challenges.
- 2:15They don't spend weeks planning or waiting for perfect
- 2:17conditions. Bilbo leaves his comfortable
- 2:21Hobbit hole with nothing but the clothes on his back.
- 2:24When adventure knocks, Frodo accepts the burden of the ring
- 2:29and sets off, knowing the journey will be perilous but
- 2:34understanding that someone must begin.
- 2:37Tolkien understood that the biggest obstacle to any quest,
- 2:41whether it's writing a novel, changing careers, or simply
- 2:45organizing your closet, is often the reluctance to take that
- 2:49first step. We delay.
- 2:52We plan, we wait for the right moment, and meanwhile the job
- 2:57that's never started continues to loom over us.
- 3:03The wisdom of hobbits is in their willingness to begin even
- 3:08when they can't see the end of the road.
- 3:10And even if they do need a wizard to kind of push them out
- 3:14the door, they trust that the path will reveal itself as they
- 3:17walk it. So today, channel your inner
- 3:21Hobbit and think about Tolkien's wisdom.
- 3:24What job in your life has been taking longest to finish simply
- 3:28because you haven't started it yet?
- 3:30Maybe it's that conversation you've been putting off.
- 3:34Maybe it's the creative project gathering dust in your mind.
- 3:37Maybe it's the small home repair that's been on your To Do List
- 3:41for months. Maybe it's reaching out to
- 3:44reconnect with an old friend. Maybe it's all those things you
- 3:49don't need a perfect plan or ideal conditions like Bilbo and
- 3:54Frodo. You just need the courage to
- 3:56take that first step out your door and trust that the
- 3:59adventure will unfold as it should.
- 4:02That's going to do it for today. May your adventures be epic and
- 4:07your second breakfast's plentiful.
- 4:11I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:17tomorrow.
