- 1:25Welcome back, everybody, to another episode
- 1:26of the Session Zero University's Book Club.
- 1:29And today, we are going to be discussing the Marvel
- 1:32Multiverse role-playing game.
- 1:34That's right, right out of our favorite superhero movies,
- 1:38all the Marvel stuff we've seen from Captain
- 1:40America and Iron Man, all the way to the X-Men.
- 1:43And joining me today is huge comic fan and Marvel Multiverse
- 1:48expert.
- 1:48I'm going to call you an expert, I don't know if expert it.
- 1:50I'm going to disappoint a lot of people
- 1:52if they think I'm an expert.
- 1:53But you've definitely played a lot more than I have.
- 1:55And that's kind of the benefit here is--
- 1:57Lucas Sullivan.
- 1:58Lucas, thank you for joining us on the show.
- 1:59Thank you for having me.
- 2:00Absolutely.
- 2:01It's a pleasure.
- 2:02Yes, absolutely.
- 2:04So I had actually gotten the book not too long before we played.
- 2:09I saw it was on sale at Barnes & Noble.
- 2:11I said, why not?
- 2:11And then it kind of sat on my proverbial shelf of shame,
- 2:15just like with the board games that I buy that I haven't played
- 2:17yet.
- 2:17We all have that shelf.
- 2:18It's true, it's true.
- 2:20I've got a handful of different RPGs I want to try.
- 2:22And that one's been sitting there.
- 2:23And I remember--
- 2:24I think we just were talking, probably,
- 2:26like a church or something.
- 2:27And you had brought it up that you were running some.
- 2:29And I was like, this would be the awesome opportunity
- 2:32to try it out.
- 2:32And then we ran the one shot, and it was a lot of fun.
- 2:35I was like, this is such an easy RPG to get into.
- 2:40And I love that.
- 2:41Because as somebody that does a lot of other RPGs,
- 2:44it's just exhausting to try to figure out
- 2:46these super crunchy rules.
- 2:47So yeah.
- 2:48So if you wouldn't mind, how did you discover Marvel Multiverse?
- 2:53Like what kind of got you into it?
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:56Well, it's a long journey in some ways.
- 3:00So in our local comic shop, or one of our local comic shops,
- 3:05I'm pretty good friends with the owner.
- 3:07And I just remember going in there one day, and he said,
- 3:11hey, have you heard anything about this?
- 3:13And he had a copy of the Marvel Multiverse Role Playing Game
- 3:18play test.
- 3:19Oh, OK.
- 3:21And so he said, yeah, have you heard anything about this?
- 3:23Or are you interested?
- 3:25And so I bought it from him.
- 3:26Sure.
- 3:27And tried it a couple of times.
- 3:29And here's the thing.
- 3:30It was drastically different than the finishing product.
- 3:33Yeah, way different.
- 3:34I couldn't give you all the details,
- 3:36because it's been two, three years, right?
- 3:38But it was not nearly as good, not nearly as refined,
- 3:44compared to what we have now.
- 3:45So I've been kind of, in some ways,
- 3:49invested in it since kind of before the actual launch.
- 3:55So I guess from the beginning, the issue--
- 3:57I mean, hey, if you had the play test version,
- 4:00then I would say that's pretty much the beginning.
- 4:02Yeah, yep.
- 4:03And so again, it's definitely way better now.
- 4:07But that is interesting that it was such a different game
- 4:11during the play test.
- 4:12And they've changed it.
- 4:13So I guess that's kind of the point, right?
- 4:14Send out the play test.
- 4:15And then you get feedback.
- 4:17And then you adjust based on feedback.
- 4:18But that is pretty crazy that it was so different.
- 4:22Yeah, and I wish I could give you some examples too.
- 4:25And I don't even--
- 4:26I don't think I ever actually played it.
- 4:28Right.
- 4:29I mean, I just read it.
- 4:30And there's a lot of stuff that I remember just being like,
- 4:33this is really confusing, or it's really clunky.
- 4:35Oh, here.
- 4:36I don't--
- 4:37I'm probably wrong.
- 4:39You'll probably have somebody--
- 4:41a listener tell me that I am.
- 4:43In the comments.
- 4:43I don't even remember the 3D6 component--
- 4:48or the D616, which is kind of like the hallmark of this system.
- 4:52I don't even remember that being part of it.
- 4:55Again, I could be wrong.
- 4:56It's been like three years since I've read it.
- 4:57But well, and I'm going to assume that--
- 5:00and I know this is getting a little off track.
- 5:02But are you familiar with why it's
- 5:05like 616 is kind of the concept that they went with there?
- 5:09Why?
- 5:10Oh, yeah.
- 5:10The multiversal aspect.
- 5:12Yes.
- 5:13Earth 616--
- 5:14Yes.
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:14The main continuity of the Marvel comics.
- 5:16I didn't know that until I was listening just recently
- 5:19to the Adventure Zone.
- 5:21Clint McElroy, he did a one--
- 5:23or was kind of more of a mini series--
- 5:24on the Marvel multiverse system.
- 5:26And he's done stuff with Marvel directly.
- 5:29And so he knew the guy that designed the system,
- 5:31and he was talking about him.
- 5:32And he mentioned that.
- 5:33He's like, oh, yeah.
- 5:33And it's called the 616 system, one side
- 5:36because you're using 3D6.
- 5:38And one of them, the sort of fantastic success part, is a one.
- 5:42And then on the other hand, it's the fact
- 5:44that it's Earth 616, which is kind of where what we see kind
- 5:48of comes into play in the Marvel.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:50Yeah, for sure.
- 5:51And it shows--
- 5:53I mean, it's kind of a little bit of a wink.
- 5:56Yes.
- 5:56Nuts to the fans, for sure.
- 5:57Easter egg type thing.
- 5:58But at the same time, it really--
- 6:01I think gives it more of an identity.
- 6:04Yes.
- 6:05It's not just three random--
- 6:07Three.
- 6:08D6.
- 6:08It's kind of big--
- 6:10There's purpose here.
- 6:11Yeah, it's big then.
- 6:12So--
- 6:13Absolutely.
- 6:13So now you've been into comics for a long time.
- 6:16Like you've obviously been involved in everything
- 6:19from DC and Marvel and all kinds of other kind of areas
- 6:23within that for quite some time.
- 6:24So this obviously struck your attention because of that.
- 6:27I'm assuming.
- 6:28Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:29Yeah.
- 6:30Yeah, I've been a big fan of comics ever since I was a kid.
- 6:34Do you want me to go into that much?
- 6:35Or--
- 6:35As much?
- 6:36Go for it.
- 6:36As much as you want.
- 6:37OK.
- 6:38I could talk about comics all day.
- 6:39Yeah, that's fair.
- 6:40But no.
- 6:41Yeah, so comics--
- 6:43I mean, that's one of my big passions.
- 6:46I-- first comic I can remember getting
- 6:48was around the time Daredevil, the Ben Affleck movie
- 6:51was coming out.
- 6:52So like 2002, 2003, somewhere in the--
- 6:56OK.
- 6:56And so I'd seen Spider-Man and the X-Men
- 6:59before that.
- 7:00But I remember going to Toys R Us
- 7:04and they had these five packs of Marvel comics.
- 7:09OK.
- 7:09The one on top was Daredevil 186.
- 7:13OK.
- 7:14And so that was the one that caught my attention
- 7:16because I was like, oh, this Daredevil movie is coming out.
- 7:18I want to get into this.
- 7:20And so we got that.
- 7:22And I've been hooked ever since.
- 7:24Was really fortunate.
- 7:25My-- well, my mom married a guy who's also a big comic collector.
- 7:31Oh, OK.
- 7:32And so in some ways, I already was really into them.
- 7:36But he really just catapulted my love for the comics.
- 7:39And I mean, he's a big collector.
- 7:41I think he's told me before--
- 7:43I don't know if this is bragging or not,
- 7:44but he told me that his previous marriage,
- 7:48he had paid for the divorce by selling like three comics.
- 7:52I mean, so high-end comics is what he would deal in.
- 7:55But then on top of that, I mean, he was also a fan.
- 7:59He wasn't just an investment for him.
- 8:01He also loved the comics.
- 8:03And so he, like Batman, Spider-Man, Hulk,
- 8:06he'd have complete runs.
- 8:08And it would be the kind of thing where he'd have them out
- 8:11and he'd read an issue and be like, hey,
- 8:13before I put this back, do you want to read it?
- 8:16Oh, nice.
- 8:17And so I mean, he really, in a lot of ways,
- 8:19kind of nurtured my love for comics.
- 8:22And so yeah, when it came to--
- 8:25I'd done other role-playing games.
- 8:27Oh, OK.
- 8:27That was going to be my next question.
- 8:28So that's perfect.
- 8:29Sure.
- 8:29But yeah, I was just going to say,
- 8:31I'd done other role-playing games leading up to it.
- 8:33And so on top of that, other role-playing games,
- 8:38they kind of dabbled in the superhero aspect.
- 8:43But anyway, so for me, it was a no-brainer.
- 8:44As soon as I heard Marvel, I was like, OK,
- 8:47I already love these characters.
- 8:48I've already spent the last--
- 8:52when was 2002?
- 8:53That was almost 20--
- 8:54that was over 20 years ago.
- 8:55So the last 23 years with these characters
- 8:58and in this world, it was just no-brainer.
- 9:00And that is definitely-- and we'll
- 9:01get into this a little bit more later,
- 9:03but that is one of the coolest parts about Marvel Multiverses
- 9:06is that they have even pre-generated characters.
- 9:08You can play as Spider-Man.
- 9:10You can play as Black Panther.
- 9:13You can play as all these heroes that you love.
- 9:15And I think that's a really cool thing to be able to do.
- 9:17And obviously, I love creating new characters,
- 9:21creating new stories, and stuff like that.
- 9:23But yeah, if you want to just pick this book up,
- 9:25and then I want to play as Shang-Chi, you can do that.
- 9:27Like, they have that all set up for you.
- 9:29So you mentioned other TTRPGs.
- 9:31Before we jump into the Marvel Multiverse stuff,
- 9:33hardcore, what other TTRPGs had you played?
- 9:37Yeah, so my uncle is a big board game guy.
- 9:43Nice.
- 9:43And so he--
- 9:44I mean, I can't tell you how old I was.
- 9:46I can't even tell you what edition it was.
- 9:48But I played Pathfinder the first time
- 9:51when I was pretty young.
- 9:53I remember the whole D&D 3.0 scandal.
- 9:58Or was it 3?
- 10:00I think it was.
- 10:01It was either 3 or 3.5 or something like that?
- 10:03They did 3.5 because nobody liked 3.
- 10:05Right, right.
- 10:06Yes.
- 10:07So anyway, so he was very much against D&D when I was young.
- 10:11So he's like, I'm going to get you into Pathfinder.
- 10:14World Pathfinder family.
- 10:15Yeah, exactly.
- 10:16So I played Pathfinder.
- 10:17That was really my foundation.
- 10:19Sure.
- 10:19Went from there.
- 10:20Had a friend group that played D&D 5e.
- 10:23The same uncle got me into Cypher System, which they have
- 10:30a superhero component of that.
- 10:33And so that was the first superhero TTRPG I played.
- 10:37Granted, this was years ago.
- 10:39Sure.
- 10:40Man, I've played a lot of the Star Wars RPG,
- 10:43the most recent fantasy flight.
- 10:45I mean, love that game.
- 10:47That is one of the top of my list,
- 10:49like ones I'd love to try out.
- 10:50Oh, man, it's awesome.
- 10:52No support for it anymore.
- 10:54I know.
- 10:54That's the frustrating part.
- 10:55And it's impossible to get the books to you, I heard.
- 10:58Yeah, it is.
- 10:59I have a handful of them, but not as many.
- 11:02I mean, we were still playing when they--
- 11:04And there's a lot of them, too.
- 11:05Oh, yeah.
- 11:06Yeah, we were still playing when they stopped supporting it.
- 11:10So yeah, that was frustrating.
- 11:12But that was--
- 11:14man, that was a great system.
- 11:16I really liked that one.
- 11:17So those were the main ones.
- 11:18And I dabble with other ones as a friend would say,
- 11:21hey, do you want to play whatever gearing up currently
- 11:25to try out the fallout?
- 11:27Yeah.
- 11:28Which hopefully you might have somebody on as a guest
- 11:33at some point and they'll say, oh, this
- 11:35is the best system ever.
- 11:36It's not my favorite.
- 11:37I'll just see it.
- 11:38It's the complete opposite of this one.
- 11:41Is it the D100 one where it's like--
- 11:44or there's two I've seen.
- 11:46One was like D100 where everything is kind of on this weird
- 11:49like percent it, like out of 100% scale.
- 11:52And then there was one other one, I think,
- 11:54that was a bit simpler.
- 11:57You know what?
- 11:58I couldn't tell you.
- 11:59My friend is going to be GMing that one.
- 12:02And so he knows a lot more the details.
- 12:04I just know I was looking into it.
- 12:06And a lot of the stuff seemed to be in nightmares.
- 12:08Just seemed to really cumbersome, especially when
- 12:10you're talking about things like inventory.
- 12:12If you've ever played the fallout games,
- 12:14you're constantly getting scrapped.
- 12:16Oh, too heavy.
- 12:18And I'm like, man, I got to get a pen and paper
- 12:21and write down every individual rusted can.
- 12:25And I was just like, oh, dude, this sounds like--
- 12:26Because it's all valuable if you can--
- 12:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:29If you're building a camp or whatever.
- 12:30So again, the complete opposite of this game,
- 12:34this one's super simple, super streamlined.
- 12:36That one's a lot crunchier.
- 12:38If you like really crunchy things,
- 12:39that's great.
- 12:41Just for me, I'm like, oh, this feels like a nightmare.
- 12:43I don't know.
- 12:44I could be wrong.
- 12:45I could end up playing it when we eventually do.
- 12:47Again, we're still gearing up for it
- 12:49and could end up loving it.
- 12:50And you're like, oh, this isn't that bad.
- 12:52Yeah, but again, those are kind of the foundation
- 12:54of the ones that we've spent a lot of time in,
- 12:57besides the Marvel multiverse.
- 12:59Right.
- 13:00And you've run a couple of campaigns, one shot.
- 13:03I mean, I guess that's one thing.
- 13:05Because we did a one shot.
- 13:06I wasn't sure how long of a campaign
- 13:09have you run within Marvel multiverse.
- 13:12Yeah.
- 13:12So the current campaign that I'm working through,
- 13:16we've been going for the last six, seven months,
- 13:22somewhere around there, meeting semi-regularly.
- 13:26I think we're on like 10 or 12 or something like that,
- 13:30as far as what session we're on.
- 13:32And that's the longest one.
- 13:33So that's pretty-- yeah.
- 13:34I mean, that's a pretty good size.
- 13:35Yeah.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:36And it's been cool.
- 13:38That's when you get to this point,
- 13:40that's when the story really starts to kind of--
- 13:43Absolutely.
- 13:44Unfold.
- 13:44And you start to really love the characters
- 13:46and all that kind of stuff.
- 13:48So we're in a fun spot.
- 13:49Done a good handful of one shots as well.
- 13:53You did one with your group.
- 13:56They have a Deadpool adventure module.
- 13:59OK.
- 13:59That's supposed to be a one shot.
- 14:01We had to break it up into two, because it's kind of long.
- 14:03Oh, sure.
- 14:03Yeah, yeah.
- 14:04So I've done that one.
- 14:06I've done just some kind of almost like play test ones
- 14:10as well.
- 14:10Oh, sure.
- 14:11People have been like, oh, hey, I'm kind of interested in this.
- 14:13And just, OK, we'll just pick a random character
- 14:16from the book that's ranked 2, 3, 4, or whatever.
- 14:19And we'll try it, that kind of thing as well.
- 14:24But again, as far as campaigns go,
- 14:26the one that we're on right now that's been going to last,
- 14:30again, I don't know, six, seven months.
- 14:32Very nice.
- 14:32OK.
- 14:33The longest.
- 14:34So that means there is--
- 14:35I mean, there's potential for sure for longer campaigns,
- 14:38which is good.
- 14:39Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:40And again, with it being the Marvel brand tied to--
- 14:45I mean, there are so many possibilities.
- 14:48I mean, it's called Marvel multiverse,
- 14:49because there's multiverses.
- 14:51Yeah, multuniverses.
- 14:52There we go.
- 14:52And so, I mean, there's just so much potential to explore there.
- 14:56And when you think about comics, I mean,
- 14:59there are so many series that are in the five, six, seven,
- 15:04800 issues.
- 15:07And so, obviously, if they were able to go back to that well
- 15:11over and over again, it's not super difficult to do
- 15:16in a tabletop setting.
- 15:17No, absolutely.
- 15:18I mean, you throw in a new villain or a new NPC
- 15:21or something like that.
- 15:22You've now changed the story and opened up more possibilities.
- 15:25Exactly.
- 15:26Awesome.
- 15:26All right.
- 15:27So starting from the beginning with the Marvel
- 15:29multiverse system, how does the 616 dice concept work?
- 15:35Because that's kind of the foundation of the game, right?
- 15:37In D&D, you've got like five--
- 15:39is it five dice, I think, in the polyhedral dice?
- 15:42You're rolling the D20 most of the time.
- 15:44The other dice, they're there for damage and things like that.
- 15:47There's some numbers that you're going to add up to those dice.
- 15:51This system is different.
- 15:52You're having 3D6.
- 15:53How does that kind of play into things?
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:55So with this system, there are three different dice.
- 16:00And really, Marvel wants you to buy the official dice.
- 16:04And I would recommend it.
- 16:06They're nice.
- 16:06They just came out with a new X-Men version
- 16:09that's a different color scheme and beautiful.
- 16:14But really, you could play it with any three dice.
- 16:17Granted, you would want two dice that
- 16:19are the same color or whatever, and then one die
- 16:23that would be different.
- 16:24And that die would be your Marvel die.
- 16:26And so the idea here is that as you're playing,
- 16:32there would be different action checks,
- 16:34whether that would be melee, agility, logic,
- 16:37whatever it may be.
- 16:39And so you roll those dice, and you kind of add up
- 16:43the score there.
- 16:45And that would-- whatever number you're trying to reach
- 16:50or exceed for the check, and you're going off of that.
- 16:53Now, where it gets interesting is--
- 16:55I'd mentioned before, you would have one die that
- 16:57would be different, which would be your Marvel die.
- 17:00So a one on a regular die, they have a special side that
- 17:06just says Marvel for the official dice.
- 17:08fancy logo, little piece on there.
- 17:10That's right.
- 17:10Yep.
- 17:11But if you were to roll that, that would count as a six,
- 17:14the one would.
- 17:16And on top of that, that would be a fantastic result.
- 17:21And so the beauty of that is, regardless of if you pass
- 17:26or fail that check, you still have that fantastic result.
- 17:30So you could lose that check, and it would be, yeah, you lost,
- 17:35but maybe you have an edge on your next roll.
- 17:39And when you think about it, you have a one in six chance.
- 17:43Every time you roll.
- 17:45That's not bad.
- 17:45Of getting that ultimate result--
- 17:50sorry, sorry, that fantastic result, rather.
- 17:53And so you're getting that pretty consistently.
- 17:57Now, if you pass your check, and it is a fantastic result--
- 18:03I mean, it's even better.
- 18:05Maybe your attack says that if you
- 18:09were to get a fantastic result, maybe the person is burned,
- 18:13or maybe some different status effect.
- 18:15And on top of that, you also take whatever you're doing,
- 18:19especially if it's a check that has to do with a fight
- 18:22or something like that.
- 18:24You would take that result and multiply it by two.
- 18:28And so I mean, it's--
- 18:29You're doubling your damage and stuff like that.
- 18:31And again, this is happening pretty frequently,
- 18:35because again, you've got a one in six chance of rolling
- 18:38that fantastic result.
- 18:40So yeah.
- 18:41Absolutely.
- 18:41And that's kind of the main job of the system.
- 18:44Oh, yeah, no, absolutely.
- 18:46And it's kind of neat how it really
- 18:49encourages the yes and or the no but concept of thinking
- 18:54with RPGs, which we push really hard for.
- 18:56You don't want to just--
- 18:58like someone wants to jump over some tree or something
- 19:01like that, but they're super jump.
- 19:03And then they roll, and they don't do very well.
- 19:05And then if you're the DM, and you're just like, well,
- 19:08you fail, and that's the end of it.
- 19:10And you're like, oh, that's just kind of boring.
- 19:12But it really encourages like, oh, I failed,
- 19:14but I did roll my fantastic--
- 19:16so it's a fantastic failure.
- 19:18It's like, OK, you jump up, and you slam into this tree,
- 19:21and you can feel as like the roots from underneath
- 19:24start to pluck out, and the whole tree starts to collapse.
- 19:27But as you land, and you hit the ground,
- 19:29you find, oh, there's this cabin hidden out in the woods
- 19:32that you wouldn't have noticed, because there was some huge
- 19:34brush that was blocking away.
- 19:35And now this tree-- so it opens up a new opportunity.
- 19:38Now the story can move forward.
- 19:40And then of course, with yes ands when they succeed,
- 19:43and they get that fantastic success,
- 19:45then you get to say, oh, man, well, you usually hand that
- 19:48over to the player.
- 19:48You say, OK, describe for me how you do this epic attack
- 19:53that you were doing, what made it so cool.
- 19:55And then the player gets that moment
- 19:56where they're like, I really contributed to the story right
- 19:59now, and that's really awesome.
- 20:00And I will say too, before we move on--
- 20:03so that's the fantastic result.
- 20:05Then you also have an ultimate fantastic, which
- 20:08is where you have the two non-marvel dice.
- 20:13You roll sixes.
- 20:15So 6, 1, 6 is the idea.
- 20:176 on 6.
- 20:18And then granted, I mean, here's the thing.
- 20:21It's elusive.
- 20:22I've never actually seen somebody roll an ultimate fantastic
- 20:25in per se.
- 20:26Because you're at, what, 36 times 6, I think,
- 20:29is how the math works again.
- 20:30Yeah, I think it's like a 1 in 200 something.
- 20:33I'm not good at math.
- 20:36No, I get you.
- 20:37I think it says it in the book or something like that.
- 20:39There's a 1 in whatever.
- 20:40And so they pretty much say, hey, make it really special
- 20:43when it happens.
- 20:44Granted, that hasn't happened.
- 20:45But you get all--
- 20:47I mean, you automatically pass.
- 20:48Whatever check you're trying, you automatically pass.
- 20:51And on top of that, all of the other results
- 20:54that would come with the fantastic result
- 20:56are applied as well.
- 20:57Absolutely.
- 20:58Like you're trying to jump across a chasm,
- 20:59and you've got your friends with you, and you jump,
- 21:02and you roll the dice, and it's the full, the ultimate
- 21:05fantastic success.
- 21:06You grab on to everybody, and you all
- 21:08jump across the couch, or something epic like that.
- 21:11Yeah, exactly.
- 21:12Yeah, where you just maxes out.
- 21:14So and you mentioned this before, but you mentioned edge.
- 21:17There are instances throughout the game
- 21:19where you can gain an edge, or you
- 21:21might have what's called trouble.
- 21:23And those are the opposite sides to that.
- 21:26How do those work?
- 21:27What do those mean?
- 21:28Yeah, so if you have edge, you have to--
- 21:33here's the crazy thing about these, edges and trouble.
- 21:36They stack.
- 21:37And so you could have like three edges on it,
- 21:40which would mean that you could re-roll one of the dice.
- 21:44Either three times a roll, all the dice wants, or whatever.
- 21:47It may be--
- 21:48Oh, it's a full re-roll.
- 21:49Well, each edge goes towards one.
- 21:52Oh, OK.
- 21:52And so let's say that you had three edges.
- 21:56You could roll all three over again
- 21:58and take the better of the two results.
- 22:00Or you could just do one dice.
- 22:02One dice three times.
- 22:04Yeah, until you get something good.
- 22:05Hopefully.
- 22:06Yeah, exactly.
- 22:07And so that's what edges do.
- 22:10You re-roll and you take the better of the two results.
- 22:16Now trouble is the opposite.
- 22:18You re-roll and you have to take the worst of the two results.
- 22:23And you see both of these pretty frequently
- 22:27throughout the session, where you're kind of--
- 22:30depending on the GM is saying, hey,
- 22:33you're going to have to re-roll one of those.
- 22:35You've got edge on this or trouble on this.
- 22:38And some of the different powers also,
- 22:41they just have that as a effect.
- 22:43And even some of the traits, I think,
- 22:45associated with some of the edge and trouble.
- 22:47So if you're--
- 22:48oh, man, I didn't look through the traits super well,
- 22:50because there's a lot.
- 22:51But if you have something that would, in theory, benefit
- 22:55to the specific situation, maybe because you
- 22:59were an Olympic athlete as part of your background,
- 23:02you gained a trade of extra human strength or high training
- 23:07or something like that.
- 23:07So when you're in a situation where you need to pull
- 23:10vault over something, you'd be like, well,
- 23:11pull vaulting was something that I did when I was an Olympian.
- 23:14I'd get edge on that.
- 23:16Yeah, exactly.
- 23:17So another example would be there are people
- 23:22that are famous.
- 23:24And so they have an edge on checks
- 23:27where they're trying to speak with somebody.
- 23:30So it would be an edge on their ego check
- 23:33when it would come to trying to convince somebody
- 23:35to do something for them, because they'd be more likely
- 23:37because, hey, you're famous.
- 23:38Oh my gosh, I know you from all my--
- 23:40Yeah, exactly.
- 23:41You know what?
- 23:42It's funny you mentioned that, because that was the character
- 23:43that I played when we did the one shot was famous.
- 23:45And I completely forgot about that.
- 23:47No, you're good.
- 23:47That's a perfect example.
- 23:48And then on the other hand, you've
- 23:49got trouble, of course, which that's
- 23:51like there's security cameras all around you.
- 23:54You want to sneak in.
- 23:55But just because maybe they're able to turn invisible,
- 24:00which is cool, but what they don't realize
- 24:02is that these have a heat send or something on them.
- 24:04And it's like, you're going to have trouble
- 24:06if you're going to try to sneak past these specialized
- 24:07cameras.
- 24:08Yep.
- 24:08So awesome.
- 24:09OK, and then just play off of everything
- 24:12that we've talked about so far with the 616 dice concept
- 24:18and everything that would be associated with that
- 24:21is pretty much within four pages of the book, which I think
- 24:24is the coolest thing ever.
- 24:26You could argue one, two, three, four.
- 24:27Yeah, four pages.
- 24:29So that means that within reading a quick overview
- 24:31of the four pages, you could pretty much get started
- 24:34on playing for the most part.
- 24:35There's obviously a little bit more to it.
- 24:37Obviously, if you want to make your own characters,
- 24:39there's going to be a little bit more to it.
- 24:40But for the most part, I mean, you can essentially
- 24:43pick up the game pretty quick, especially
- 24:44if you made a character and you read those four pages.
- 24:48If you have the understanding of how the character's creation
- 24:50works, you will inevitably get most of the other stuff
- 24:53that you need.
- 24:54You're going to be set.
- 24:54Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:55And I think that's one of the biggest strengths
- 24:58for this system.
- 24:59I mean, I've jokingly called it "baby's first RPG."
- 25:04And some people might think that's a knock against it.
- 25:06I don't think that's a knock against it at all.
- 25:08I mean, it's super simple.
- 25:10Marvel has, in fact, they even have a YouTube video.
- 25:13I think it's like a 20-minute-long video.
- 25:16Sure.
- 25:16And it's like how to play the Marvel multiverse game.
- 25:19And I'll send it to people all the time.
- 25:20And the funny thing is that 20 minutes,
- 25:23there's like filler in there.
- 25:24But you can cut out like no problem.
- 25:27You could cut that video in half if you wanted to.
- 25:30Because it's-- I mean, it's that simple.
- 25:32Absolutely.
- 25:33And I have two daughters.
- 25:35One of them is nine.
- 25:36The other one is five.
- 25:37And I've honestly-- we've had conversations of, hey,
- 25:40why don't-- they're really into X-Men right now.
- 25:42Oh, awesome.
- 25:43OK.
- 25:43It's like, hey, why don't you play as Kitty Pryde.
- 25:46And you-- the other one will play as Rogue.
- 25:49And we'll just mess around and have fun.
- 25:52And I mean, they can just grasp it as kids.
- 25:57Now granted, that's with somebody that's older,
- 26:00that knows the rules.
- 26:01Right.
- 26:02You know, shepherding them through.
- 26:04I don't know that they could get there on their own
- 26:07without that.
- 26:08But again, super simple.
- 26:10Yeah.
- 26:10Super, super simple.
- 26:11But they have fun with it.
- 26:12They're able to.
- 26:13And they're not just like rolling dice
- 26:14and then letting you tell them everything that just happened.
- 26:17And then they're kind of outside of the situation.
- 26:19Like, they're actively engaging in the story
- 26:21and everything like that.
- 26:21Exactly.
- 26:21Which is awesome.
- 26:22Yep.
- 26:23Now, when it comes to combat, that's
- 26:26where a little bit more of the slight clunkiness to this game
- 26:29comes in, just because that's where the majority of the math
- 26:32sits at.
- 26:33That's right.
- 26:33Right.
- 26:34So you'll have some damage multipliers and some things
- 26:37that'll add to the damage.
- 26:38But I think for the most part, especially
- 26:41if you've played an RPG before, it's
- 26:43a lot easier to pick up than some of them that I've played.
- 26:46Sure.
- 26:46Yeah.
- 26:47And I guess that's one of the areas
- 26:50that I kind of forgot to mention when I was talking
- 26:52about the dice system.
- 26:55Oh, sure.
- 26:55Which is the fact that when you're rolling,
- 26:59you only have to roll once.
- 27:01Right.
- 27:01It's not like you're rolling to see if you hit
- 27:03and then rolling to see how much damage you do.
- 27:06It's all in that first roll.
- 27:09Again, I should have mentioned that earlier.
- 27:11But so let's say that you're rolling to try to see
- 27:16if you hit somebody with a melee attack.
- 27:19And so you roll and you hit.
- 27:22Yeah.
- 27:23It's a success.
- 27:24It's a success.
- 27:25All that you do is you just take that Marvel die
- 27:27and then you just feed it through the multiplier.
- 27:30Oh, OK.
- 27:30And that you already have to see how much you get.
- 27:34So let's say that it's a success.
- 27:35You roll it to and you are ranked to.
- 27:40So you would automatically, assuming
- 27:42that there's no other kind of powers that would mess with this.
- 27:45And there are some.
- 27:46You would just take that two times that two in the multiplier
- 27:49and then add whatever your melee is.
- 27:53And that's your damage.
- 27:55And so I mean, that might, especially
- 27:57as I'm saying it out loud, it might sound difficult.
- 27:59But once you do it twice, it's just like you know exactly how
- 28:03to do it.
- 28:04I mean, it's super simple.
- 28:05I completely agree.
- 28:06And like with things like Dungeons and Dragons,
- 28:09you're going to have these four different dice that
- 28:12might be what you roll for the damage.
- 28:14And you've got to find the right one.
- 28:15And then you've got multipliers that all go into it.
- 28:17And there's a there's a couple of ways
- 28:19that you can kind of streamline it for sure.
- 28:21But I mean, like you said, the beauty of this
- 28:24is the simplicity that I rolled once.
- 28:25I take that one die that's already been rolled and then just
- 28:28run it through that same algorithm.
- 28:30And it's not anything.
- 28:31I shouldn't even use the phrase algorithm.
- 28:33That makes it sound really complicated.
- 28:34It's really like multiply by this number
- 28:37and then add some of this.
- 28:38It's like the easiest thing in the world.
- 28:40If you really hate math, have your phone with the calculator
- 28:43on and just like quick tap it all in and you're good to go.
- 28:46So awesome.
- 28:47So let's talk campaign creation.
- 28:50So you mentioned before you would
- 28:52run a couple of different things.
- 28:53You had one that was kind of ongoing.
- 28:55I know that you do some like sort of homebrew stuff
- 28:58when it comes to the--
- 28:59because you did that for our one shot was kind of something
- 29:00you had come up with.
- 29:01So with that being said, as a GM,
- 29:05how would I even kind of start when
- 29:07thinking about creating a campaign that I
- 29:10want to run with some players?
- 29:11How do I figure out setting?
- 29:13And what's a good jumping off point?
- 29:15Things along those lines.
- 29:16Yeah.
- 29:16I mean, there's really no wrong answer here with this.
- 29:19I think one of the very important things to do
- 29:22is start off by establishing the tone that you want.
- 29:27And the reason I say that is because I mean,
- 29:29just think about the differences in the Marvel universe.
- 29:33Even if you don't read the comics,
- 29:35if all you know are the movies, think about--
- 29:38did I say read the movies?
- 29:40See the movies.
- 29:41The only thing you're familiar with
- 29:42is the movies and the TV shows.
- 29:44As an adult, the older I get, the more
- 29:46I have to have subtitles on for anything that I'm watching.
- 29:49So yeah, I definitely read movies.
- 29:51Did you do movies?
- 29:52Yeah, well, yeah.
- 29:53But anyway, if you've only seen the movies or the TV shows,
- 29:57I mean, you know that there's a huge difference in tone
- 29:59when it comes to the Marvel.
- 30:00So I mean, if you take Guardians of the Galaxy
- 30:03and you compare that to the Daredevil TV series,
- 30:07I mean, it's night and day.
- 30:08One is a super grounded, gritty show.
- 30:13Well, the other one is this really hilarious romp
- 30:16through outer space, the complete opposite of grounded.
- 30:20And then you've got something like Endgame or Infinity War,
- 30:24which is super epic in scale.
- 30:26I mean, it's cosmic in the same way
- 30:28that Guardians of the Galaxy is.
- 30:30But yeah, again, different tone there.
- 30:32And so it's kind of the same thing
- 30:34if you are planning a campaign here.
- 30:37You kind of want to establish the tone from the get go.
- 30:42I think that this may be more so than a lot of games
- 30:45is kind of key.
- 30:48So for instance, the campaign that we're running currently,
- 30:53I mean, it's a very grounded campaign.
- 30:56All of our heroes are ranked two, which is pretty low
- 31:00in the grand scheme of things.
- 31:01And they're dealing with not really any cosmic level
- 31:05threats as of yet.
- 31:06It's mostly drug addicts.
- 31:10I shouldn't say drug addicts necessarily,
- 31:12but drug lords rather and human traffickers and stuff.
- 31:16And so it's really hard to be lighthearted and funny with that.
- 31:22However, we talked about it beforehand,
- 31:25and we knew, OK, this is kind of the tone that we're going for.
- 31:28And so everybody is on the same page with that.
- 31:31When we do one shot-- we'll do one shot.
- 31:33And we did the Deadpool one shot.
- 31:36Oh, I can only imagine that was hilarious.
- 31:38Yeah, it was great.
- 31:40And so just kind of knowing what you're getting into tone wise
- 31:44is really important, I'd say that.
- 31:46We're all pretty-- I mean, for the most part,
- 31:48we're all pretty familiar with the Marvel stuff,
- 31:50and they have all the movies and shows and stuff.
- 31:52So usually, yeah, you can say, OK, it's kind of going to be--
- 31:55or it's going to be fitting in with kind of this plot line
- 31:58here, or we're going to do stuff with X-Men a lot,
- 32:00or something like that.
- 32:01But yeah, absolutely.
- 32:02Having that tone and knowing we're going to be--
- 32:05this is going to be pretty intense or pretty serious
- 32:07or, like you said, grounded.
- 32:09Yeah.
- 32:10You might have something that's a little bit like--
- 32:12it was a Doctor Strange 2, where it kind of
- 32:14had a spooky-ish elements to it.
- 32:17Or there was a Mutants movie.
- 32:21Yeah, I think it was Mutants, which was kind of like a horror
- 32:23movie type thing.
- 32:24Yeah, yeah.
- 32:24So you can do that.
- 32:25Like, that's the beauty of it, too, is like,
- 32:27superhero stuff notoriously is usually categorized
- 32:30like an action epic sci-fi kind of a thing.
- 32:33But man, you could really do just about anything with it.
- 32:36Yeah, you can.
- 32:37[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 32:59And so from there, I'd also say you--
- 33:03not only do you want to know the tone, but also the setting.
- 33:07Oh, yeah.
- 33:07And the reason I say that is because, again,
- 33:11you could be going through outer space.
- 33:13You could be hopping through different multiverses.
- 33:16And so you kind of have to make sure--
- 33:18I shouldn't say you have to, but you'd
- 33:20be wise to make sure that you're all on the same page as far
- 33:23as what you're trying to get out of it.
- 33:25I know that in our campaign that we're running,
- 33:28we don't really mingle with the greater Marvel universe too much.
- 33:33Oh, yeah.
- 33:33Yeah.
- 33:34I mean, that's not to say that we haven't.
- 33:36I mean, they've run into Daredevil, Wulverine.
- 33:41But going into it, they kind of knew, OK,
- 33:44hey, there wasn't going to be a whole lot of it.
- 33:46My suggestion and nobody else that I know that has run this
- 33:49game has taken this suggestion.
- 33:52My suggestion when it came to this game and what we've done
- 33:58is we've said, OK, most of the Marvel stuff
- 34:01takes place in New York.
- 34:03Oh, OK.
- 34:04And the TV shows or whatever.
- 34:06But most of the heroes are based out of New York.
- 34:09I don't know New York.
- 34:10No, I've never been to New York.
- 34:12And so the biggest city near me is Omaha.
- 34:16Yes.
- 34:16So we just said, hey, let's just imagine
- 34:19if superheroes were real.
- 34:21The Marvel universe was real.
- 34:23Everybody knows that all the heroes are in New York.
- 34:27And there's the West Coast Avengers and stuff.
- 34:29So that would kind of create a crime vacuum in Midwestern
- 34:33cities like Omaha or whatever.
- 34:35And so let's say that you guys are like the only heroes
- 34:38in Omaha.
- 34:38And there's no huge villains.
- 34:40There's no Dr. Doom here.
- 34:42There's no Dr. Octopus, whatever.
- 34:45Lots of doctors.
- 34:47But hey, there are these petty drug lords or whatever
- 34:52and all these different things.
- 34:54And so for us, that's work.
- 34:57Again, we got to keep it fun with introducing every once
- 35:02in a while.
- 35:02Yes.
- 35:03Yeah, Wolverine's in town.
- 35:05For some reason.
- 35:06For some reason or Daredevil.
- 35:08And granted, those heroes kind of fit well in that kind of--
- 35:12Right.
- 35:13Scenario.
- 35:14But anyway, so that's what I would recommend.
- 35:18Knowing the tone that you're going for and knowing the setting.
- 35:21If you really are just thinking, man,
- 35:24I really want my OC to meet all the Avengers
- 35:28and become an Avenger or go to what's it called?
- 35:32Professor X's gift for--
- 35:34Even school for the junctions.
- 35:35School for the junctions.
- 35:36Yeah, yeah.
- 35:37There it is.
- 35:37Like, there's room for that.
- 35:39You can do that.
- 35:40And so I would just suggest being on the same page
- 35:43with whoever's running the game as far as what your expectation
- 35:46and what you want out of the game is.
- 35:48Absolutely.
- 35:48It'd be a really unique experience
- 35:50to run something for somebody who is really unfamiliar with any
- 35:53of the Marvel stuff.
- 35:54Yeah.
- 35:54Like, I've never seen any of the movies,
- 35:57whether they were the older versions of them,
- 35:59like "Toby McGuire's Spider-Man" and the original "X-Men" stuff
- 36:02versus the stuff that's new now with the Avengers and everything
- 36:05like that.
- 36:05That'd be really interesting to run
- 36:07where the person is completely unfamiliar with the universe.
- 36:10Sure.
- 36:11Or multiverse, I guess.
- 36:12Well, we actually have one.
- 36:14Did you?
- 36:15I mean, he's not completely--
- 36:18Right.
- 36:19I mean, you can't really be completely oblivious to all of it.
- 36:22But I mean, besides playing Marvel Rivals and seeing
- 36:27some of the "X-Men" movies back in 2004--
- 36:29He really--
- 36:30I mean, he really does not know much, which is fun.
- 36:35Because as his character is meeting these other characters,
- 36:41I mean, he has no frame of reference.
- 36:44And so for instance-- OK, I'll just
- 36:46use this as a very quick example.
- 36:49Anybody that is really into the Marvel universe--
- 36:51but they might know that Wolverine has
- 36:54like an alternate persona patch, where he's--
- 36:57where's this white tuxedo and has his eye patch.
- 37:01So not-- again, not everybody knows that.
- 37:04And so when we were playing it, Wolverine
- 37:07is first introduced as patch.
- 37:10And it was funny because two of the other guys at the table
- 37:14are big comic nerds, kind of like me.
- 37:15And they're like stoked, like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:19And my other friend's like, patch, OK, yeah.
- 37:21Nice to meet you.
- 37:23I mean, to the point where he kept calling him patches.
- 37:25And Wolverine's getting mad.
- 37:27He's like, I'm not a dog, but it's not patches, it's patch.
- 37:31But anyway, so cool.
- 37:34So yeah, and so there has been a little bit of that.
- 37:37And that friend, again, from the get go,
- 37:40I remember him saying, I don't really
- 37:41know if I'm the right fit for this game.
- 37:44I don't-- I'm not familiar with all the Marvel stuff.
- 37:46And again, I just kind of told him, hey, you know what?
- 37:49Neither is your character.
- 37:50He's meeting these characters for these people
- 37:53for the first time, too.
- 37:54Don't feel bad about it.
- 37:55That'd be so much fun.
- 37:57Like, again, because you get to do stuff like that,
- 37:59where you introduce this character
- 38:01that other people would know for whatever reason.
- 38:03They have no idea.
- 38:04And so they get to experience for the first time
- 38:06in your campaign, which is pretty, pretty sick,
- 38:09being able to do that.
- 38:10So that's really cool.
- 38:11I like what you said about kind of having
- 38:13a familiar environment.
- 38:14Like, you had mentioned Omaha, which is funny,
- 38:16because we actually-- when we did our zombie one shot--
- 38:19Black Friday of the Dead.
- 38:20Black Friday of the Dead was actually--
- 38:22so the mall in there was fictional.
- 38:23But to be completely honest with you,
- 38:25I actually just took an outline or whatever of the mall
- 38:29here in town.
- 38:30Sure.
- 38:30And I swear, I told them so many times throughout the entire thing.
- 38:34I had the mall.
- 38:34It was all printed out.
- 38:35Obviously, the stores are completely different.
- 38:37But I kept telling them throughout the whole thing,
- 38:39I'm like, it's literally just this mall.
- 38:41You guys have all been to this mall.
- 38:42It's literally just this mall.
- 38:43So when you're describing where you're going,
- 38:45just think of it like that.
- 38:47And that helped a lot, to keep it something close.
- 38:50And I also really like how there is a lot--
- 38:52I feel like there's a lot of logic in what you were saying,
- 38:54where it's like you have all these non-super or maybe
- 38:57lower tier super--
- 38:58Yeah, super, exactly.
- 39:00--that have made their way to sort of this central Midwest
- 39:04kind of area within the US.
- 39:05Because I don't want to go to some of these big cities,
- 39:07because that's where all the superheros are at.
- 39:09And they're taking out everybody.
- 39:10Yeah, exactly.
- 39:11They're just stopping crime everywhere.
- 39:12So if I'm here and they're out there, then I'm not too worried.
- 39:15So I think that's actually a really clever, clever concept
- 39:18here.
- 39:19And then I would say, what about with--
- 39:21let's jump into discussing the character creation.
- 39:24We obviously both kind of plotted out some characters.
- 39:27And that's kind of how we'll end things today
- 39:29to talk about what character we came up with.
- 39:31But when it comes to character creation--
- 39:33and this is what I love about the book--
- 39:35is that I think, honestly, about 90% of this book
- 39:40is literally just helping you create characters
- 39:42or giving you pre-created characters
- 39:44so that you can jump right in.
- 39:45Yeah.
- 39:46But the fact that they let you create your own superheros
- 39:49really important to me, because I don't always
- 39:51want to just play as something that already exists.
- 39:53I like the idea of being able to make my own.
- 39:55And so I'm super stoked that they have so much in here
- 39:59that you can look through.
- 40:00It's not boring like statistics and numbers and stuff.
- 40:03It's interesting.
- 40:04You get to look at all these different origins.
- 40:07So origins, kind of your--
- 40:10I want to say how you got your powers is probably
- 40:12the best way to describe it.
- 40:14Are you an alien from another planet?
- 40:16And obviously, things are different here.
- 40:18Are you a mutant, which we've mentioned a couple of times
- 40:21before, right?
- 40:21You have that gene inside of you that gives you special abilities.
- 40:24Are you one of the eternals?
- 40:26Do you have high-tech cybernetics like Iron Man?
- 40:28He's got a suit and things like that.
- 40:30So there's a ton of stuff in here for that.
- 40:33Your occupation, what are you doing for a living
- 40:37that's not obviously super-heroing?
- 40:39I don't even think actually, now that I think about it,
- 40:41that's technically not an option in here.
- 40:43Yeah, I don't think-- there's adventurer,
- 40:46which you could maybe say.
- 40:49But yeah, I don't even think adventurer really counts,
- 40:52because I think they're thinking more of Indiana Jones
- 40:55text.
- 40:56Yeah, which that would be a really interesting unique
- 40:58character.
- 40:59I guess the closest thing I can see is law enforcement.
- 41:01You could maybe argue to some extent.
- 41:03But there are people within the Marvel multiverse that are cops.
- 41:07Oh, sure.
- 41:09I think if you're talking about--
- 41:13you've got Jessica Jones, who is a private investigator.
- 41:16Right.
- 41:18Daredevil's a lawyer.
- 41:19Yep, yep.
- 41:19I'm trying to think-- but I think there have been some that were--
- 41:23I'm just drawing a blank.
- 41:24Right, no, I'm saying here.
- 41:25I know that there were some that were cops,
- 41:27but they're like, I can't go quite as far as a cop,
- 41:29and so I'm going to have to do the sport.
- 41:30I got to do super work.
- 41:31Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 41:32I can't use my superpowers as a cop,
- 41:35because you sure create a whole situation with legal stuff.
- 41:39But you've got trade.
- 41:40So these are just kind of like narrowing down
- 41:43on some really specific things about your character
- 41:45and creating some stuff about that.
- 41:48Let's see, what else is--
- 41:49you've got tags, which if you don't mind me--
- 41:52No, go for it, absolutely.
- 41:53You have tags and traits, which I think for a lot of people,
- 41:58it's like, OK, what's the difference?
- 41:59Right, absolutely.
- 42:00And so the difference is, I would say,
- 42:03tags are primarily only narrative.
- 42:06Well, traits, they're narrative.
- 42:10However, they also play into the mechanics.
- 42:15That's exactly right.
- 42:16They play into the mechanics.
- 42:17Right.
- 42:17So for instance, you might have as a tag
- 42:21that you have a secret identity.
- 42:22That doesn't necessarily change anything.
- 42:24But if you say that one of your tags is--
- 42:27we used famous as an example before.
- 42:29So that's a trait.
- 42:32And so yeah, it is narrative focused.
- 42:35However, it also has advantage on the ego checks.
- 42:39Exactly, yeah.
- 42:40So there's something that comes out of it.
- 42:42And with secret identity, it might not necessarily
- 42:45give you any kind of-- oh, I said advantage earlier.
- 42:48I'm at edge.
- 42:48But I know what you meant.
- 42:50Coming out of Dungeons and Dragons, it's always advantage.
- 42:53But so with secret identity, when you talked about with Wolverine
- 42:57and his secret identity, I guess alternate identity,
- 43:00being patched and stuff like that,
- 43:02there's something you could still use in the story.
- 43:04And it might honestly, depending on the situation,
- 43:06it might offer you something just in that moment.
- 43:09But yeah, otherwise, it's more of a narrative thing, something
- 43:12that you can use along those lines.
- 43:15So it could be anything from like you a black market access
- 43:18is another one of the tags, meaning
- 43:20that you've dealt with people within sort of a black market
- 43:22setting.
- 43:23And therefore, you could theoretically
- 43:24use those in the future.
- 43:27And then, I think, again, the biggest chunk of it all
- 43:31is the powers, all these many, many, many super powers
- 43:35that you get to go through when you're creating your character.
- 43:38Or obviously, if you use one of the premade characters,
- 43:40they're going to list out.
- 43:41And they're all within what are called power sets.
- 43:44Yes.
- 43:45Which I think-- it's a cool idea, right?
- 43:47We're trying to sort of categorize.
- 43:49I will say, with the X-Men book, I think,
- 43:51did they have more powers that were--
- 43:53Yeah.
- 43:53Oh, OK.
- 43:54More powers.
- 43:55And so there's also-- OK, there's been two different--
- 44:00I don't even-- can't remember what they call them.
- 44:02Like expansion books.
- 44:05Right.
- 44:06Granted, but there's also adventure modules,
- 44:08that kind of thing.
- 44:09Anyway, but two expansions, an X-Men one and a Spider-Man one.
- 44:12Oh.
- 44:13And both of them introduce new--
- 44:14I think both introduce new power sets.
- 44:16And both of them certainly introduce new powers as well.
- 44:20Absolutely.
- 44:20And also new occupations.
- 44:23Right.
- 44:24Traits, careers, that kind of thing as well.
- 44:27So yeah.
- 44:27Lots of opportunities.
- 44:28More opportunities create unique areas.
- 44:30That's curious.
- 44:31That's right.
- 44:31Yeah, that's curious.
- 44:32Which is really cool.
- 44:33And one thing that I noticed--
- 44:35and maybe this is just my opinion, I don't know, maybe--
- 44:38where I noticed that some of the powers will sort of replicate.
- 44:43So the idea is that the powers are
- 44:45under these categories, which are the power sets.
- 44:47So you might have a power set that is martial arts,
- 44:50which suggests that this power stems
- 44:52from your martial arts training, or maybe you're
- 44:55part of some sort of organization that has some pseudo
- 44:58superpower thing that stems from their martial arts,
- 45:00something along those lines.
- 45:00You might have a power set that's all based around weapons.
- 45:03You have some magical weapon or some kind of special weapon,
- 45:06so on and so forth.
- 45:08And one thing that I noticed is that some of the powers actually
- 45:12were very much the same as other powers,
- 45:15but they're from two different power sets.
- 45:17Yeah.
- 45:17So it's like, yes, this basically functions the same
- 45:20within the game.
- 45:22But we want to make sure that your character is unique
- 45:25and is using it in a very different way.
- 45:27Yeah.
- 45:27And I think that's really good.
- 45:29That's really useful to make unique characters.
- 45:31Yeah.
- 45:31And it's super helpful, too.
- 45:33I know that I've played this long enough to where--
- 45:38and especially narrating--
- 45:41to where I've had to just flip through the book real quickly
- 45:44and be like, oh, you guys are fighting Saber Tooth today.
- 45:47And I'm looking at the powers.
- 45:48I'm going, oh, man, I don't recognize this one.
- 45:51And then I flip back to the book and I go,
- 45:53oh, that works exactly like this other one.
- 45:56Exactly.
- 45:57It makes it really easy, really smooth.
- 46:00So yeah, yeah, that's good.
- 46:02I will say the one thing that kind of got me that I noticed
- 46:05the other night when I was looking through the book
- 46:07was in the power section, like all the premade characters,
- 46:09you do have to kind of-- it just lists them out.
- 46:12Yeah, you do need to like go re-reference,
- 46:14like what does that power do again?
- 46:16So I could-- I mean, obviously, as the DM, right,
- 46:19you would usually prepare these things ahead of time
- 46:22so you could write them all out and then that way you have
- 46:23them on hand.
- 46:24It's not any different than like in D&D
- 46:26if you had an enemy that had a big list of spells
- 46:29that they could cast.
- 46:30And you've got to keep track of all those
- 46:32and how all those work.
- 46:33And like you said, after you've played for a while,
- 46:35you kind of get an idea of how a lot of these things work.
- 46:38And you can easily be like, oh, I already know what that does.
- 46:41It gives him an edge on this or it doubles the damage
- 46:43in this situation.
- 46:44Exactly.
- 46:45Sometimes you need that little bit of a reminder.
- 46:49Yeah.
- 46:49But for the most part, it's so simple to where you look at it
- 46:54and you just go, oh, hey, that works exactly like this.
- 46:57OK.
- 46:58So yeah.
- 46:59Absolutely.
- 47:00And then one of the last questions I've got here.
- 47:02So when it comes to I create a character,
- 47:05we talked about rank before.
- 47:06So rank is kind of this idea of how powerful is my hero
- 47:10or this character, I guess, in general.
- 47:12Because it can apply to the villains as well.
- 47:13Yeah.
- 47:14I think it goes until it's like 1 to 6.
- 47:16That's correct.
- 47:17OK.
- 47:17Yeah.
- 47:18So and then when you're making your character,
- 47:20depending on what rank you are, it'll
- 47:21determine how many superpowers you get to pick,
- 47:24things along those lines.
- 47:25One thing that I wondered when I first created a character
- 47:29is I thought to myself, how does in D&D we level up?
- 47:33We defeat this big bad villain.
- 47:35And then the DM's like, all right, you hit that point
- 47:37where you guys have gained enough experience
- 47:39or you've reached a certain spot in the game where
- 47:43I'm going to give you guys a level up.
- 47:44You gain new abilities and new stuff like that.
- 47:46Is that something you can do in Marvel Multiverse?
- 47:50Yeah.
- 47:51So that's another thing that would be good to talk with the--
- 47:57whoever's running the game beforehand.
- 47:59Because there are options in order to advance.
- 48:04But in some ways, the game--
- 48:07and this might disappoint some.
- 48:09I'll be just completely honest.
- 48:10If the fun part of RPGs is starting at level one for you
- 48:16and seeing this character progress,
- 48:19this could be a disappointment.
- 48:21Because the game is made so that, for instance, Spider-Man,
- 48:26he's rank four.
- 48:27And so if you want to make a hero like Spider-Man,
- 48:32it's almost suggested, yeah, why don't you just
- 48:34start off at rank four.
- 48:35Sure.
- 48:36However, there are different ways to do it.
- 48:39So I'd mentioned that my party that's in the campaign
- 48:43that I'm running most frequently, they're rank two.
- 48:48Now, we talked before we started and had mentioned, OK,
- 48:53the goal is to get these characters to rank four
- 48:56eventually.
- 48:57And so they know that that's coming.
- 48:59It's achievable, yeah.
- 49:00But it was also established that, hey,
- 49:04these are going to be connected with events in your story.
- 49:08Oh.
- 49:08And so there's going to be events that trigger you going
- 49:12from rank two to rank three.
- 49:13And then eventually, rank three to rank four.
- 49:15So we made sure that it was all part of the narrative.
- 49:19And the core rule book, that's kind of how it suggests to do it.
- 49:24However, in the X-Men expansion, there's a section called--
- 49:30I think it's called Getting Skooled, if I'm not mistaken.
- 49:34And there are suggestions there on how
- 49:36you could do almost like a weekly--
- 49:40or not weekly, but by session, slowly level your character.
- 49:44OK.
- 49:45I can't remember exactly how it works,
- 49:48but it would be OK on this session,
- 49:51you gain one more ability.
- 49:54OK.
- 49:54Next session, you get another ability.
- 49:56Next session, you gain one more power.
- 49:58And so you slowly can level or rank up that way.
- 50:03But again, it's not as baked into it
- 50:05as something like D&D where it's really part of the experience.
- 50:09It's much more up to the narrator.
- 50:14That's what they call the GMs in this game.
- 50:16We've been referring to it as GM the whole time.
- 50:17Yeah.
- 50:18The narrator is technically what they--
- 50:19Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:20So it's kind of up to their discretion.
- 50:22And so I'd say, again, just like many of these other things--
- 50:26and maybe this goes back to the simplicity of the game,
- 50:29which is like, OK, what do you want out of the game?
- 50:32Maybe have that discussion going in.
- 50:36And then, yeah, it just makes for a more satisfying experience.
- 50:40And it speaks to the customizability, I suppose,
- 50:45of the game as well, that they're like, hey, here's some options.
- 50:49I suppose you're just like, hey, this is how a ranking up works,
- 50:51or doesn't work.
- 50:52It's, hey, this is what it's intended to do.
- 50:55But here's some options for you.
- 50:56Absolutely.
- 50:57Absolutely, yeah.
- 50:58I will say, I don't think I've ever played in a D&D game
- 51:00where we had to track experience points to determine when we'd
- 51:04level up.
- 51:05It's always been the narrative level ups.
- 51:08And I like that.
- 51:09I like that so much more.
- 51:10So I'm glad that that's how they do it here,
- 51:11because it just makes more sense.
- 51:13Like, why do you suddenly have new powers after you fought this one?
- 51:16You could have like, oh, that one goblin, that last goblin,
- 51:20that's what I needed to get there.
- 51:21And then all of a sudden, I have new powers.
- 51:23And it's like, that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense,
- 51:25narratively speaking.
- 51:26Yeah, well, and on this game, too, I will say,
- 51:30each rank is a huge job.
- 51:32Oh, absolutely.
- 51:33I mean, you've only got six.
- 51:34Yeah.
- 51:34And so one is an absolute rookie.
- 51:36So if you're thinking of your typical Hydra agent or Shield
- 51:41agent, six is Thanos.
- 51:43So it's like, that's only six different steps.
- 51:47So if you were ranking up all the time,
- 51:50it wouldn't take you that long to get to six.
- 51:52And then it's just like, how does this even make sense?
- 51:54Right.
- 51:55It's a significant milestone, for sure.
- 51:57It is, for sure.
- 51:58And so that's one of the reasons why I'd say, yeah,
- 52:01you really want to kind of decide going in like, hey,
- 52:05this is where we're going to start.
- 52:06This is where we're going to end.
- 52:08Right.
- 52:08And part of it, too, is this campaign that we're working--
- 52:11there's no real end in sight.
- 52:14Right.
- 52:14I mean, potentially we could get there.
- 52:16But I'd said in the get go, there's
- 52:18comics that have been going for--
- 52:21since, I mean, Superman since 1938, I believe.
- 52:24And there's never been a month since 1938 when
- 52:28at first, action comics number one first came out,
- 52:30that there hasn't been at least one Superman issue.
- 52:33Yeah.
- 52:34So going in, it's just like, hey, my player said,
- 52:37hey, it wouldn't make any sense for us
- 52:38to start off on the same tier as Spider-Man.
- 52:40But we don't see any reason to ever be above Spider-Man.
- 52:45And so let's rank four will be where we cap it.
- 52:48Start at rank two.
- 52:49And so that's what we've been doing.
- 52:51Yeah, absolutely.
- 52:52I think that's great that you discussed with the players.
- 52:54And everybody understands.
- 52:55Everybody knows where things are headed.
- 52:57And that's obviously super beneficial.
- 52:59I will say, when I was making the character,
- 53:01I think I set mine at rank three, I think,
- 53:04is where I set mine at.
- 53:05I don't remember what I did for sure.
- 53:07So for this, when I was putting the character together
- 53:09the other day, which I think was rank three,
- 53:11I think it allows you 12 powers.
- 53:14And you think, from a new perspective to it, you're like,
- 53:18oh, man, that's a lot of powers.
- 53:21I want to say they are very specific.
- 53:23The super powers are very specific to like,
- 53:26oh, you have a focus strike.
- 53:28So you punch extra hard, or you hit something extra hard
- 53:31with your weapon, whatever the case.
- 53:32And it deals this massive amount of damage
- 53:34on this one hit.
- 53:35That is one individual power.
- 53:38And so you spend those 12 really fast.
- 53:40Yeah.
- 53:41I'm sitting there, and I'm listening to them out
- 53:42on my phone and stuff like that.
- 53:43And then I'm like, all right, where am I at?
- 53:45And I was like, one, two, three, four, five, six, oh,
- 53:47I'm already at 12.
- 53:47Whoa, oh, man, there were other things I was going to add.
- 53:49So yeah, you definitely want to make--
- 53:52and that's the beauty of it too, is that you can make
- 53:54such a unique character.
- 53:55Because there's a lot of powers.
- 53:57You only have so many spots that you can kind of fill them
- 53:59with.
- 54:00You want to make sure that you don't
- 54:02want to diversify too much.
- 54:03Because if you do that, you're kind of all over the place.
- 54:06Your character doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
- 54:07And also, it's the classic, you know, Jack of all trades,
- 54:10but master of none.
- 54:12You're only able to do so much versus, if you really
- 54:15focus in on this character, one of the people in our campaign,
- 54:20he played a monkey man.
- 54:22Yeah.
- 54:22And that was his concept for a superhero,
- 54:24is he's like an ape man.
- 54:25His whole thing was like, he's strong.
- 54:27He's this ape-like creature.
- 54:29You can hit things really hard.
- 54:31And so he based all those powers around punching stuff
- 54:33and throwing stuff and lifting stuff.
- 54:35And that was the gist of it.
- 54:37So his general power concept was super strength,
- 54:39I guess you could say.
- 54:40Yeah.
- 54:41And it made sense.
- 54:41It was fun.
- 54:42It was-- you get into a battle situation, monkey man.
- 54:45Go get him.
- 54:46And that's the beauty of it, right?
- 54:47It's like you want everybody in your party
- 54:49to have a purpose.
- 54:50And if you're trying to spread that purpose out too thin,
- 54:52that can be a bit of a problem.
- 54:54So sure.
- 54:54But with that being said, I think
- 54:56we should jump over to the character creation.
- 54:59[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 55:02All right.
- 55:09So we have both created some characters specifically--
- 55:13because one of the things that I love to do whenever we do
- 55:15these book club episodes for sessions at our university
- 55:18is make a character in the system that we're
- 55:21talking about reviewing.
- 55:22Karen and I did it when we did our obojima review.
- 55:25And so I thought it'd be really fun for us
- 55:27to do it as well for this.
- 55:29So do you want to go first or do you want me to go first?
- 55:32I'd totally--
- 55:32I can do it first if you'd like.
- 55:34Go for it, yeah.
- 55:35And how much explaining do you want me to do?
- 55:38I will leave that up to you.
- 55:40I was going to do my--
- 55:41mine is pretty--
- 55:42it's not overly detailed per se.
- 55:44Like I'm not going to list out his powers,
- 55:46but that's just the way I was going to do it.
- 55:48Well, then you know what?
- 55:49That's a better idea.
- 55:50Why don't I let you go and I'll just follow Sue.
- 55:52Oh, OK.
- 55:52I'll follow Sue wherever you do.
- 55:53Yeah, yeah.
- 55:54OK, sounds good.
- 55:54All right.
- 55:55His name is Daniel Reed, codename Pit Viper.
- 56:06Abandoned at an orphanage by his parents
- 56:09when they discovered he had a mutant gene,
- 56:11he was taken in by an organization
- 56:12known as the afterlife.
- 56:14This group of highly capable assassins
- 56:16trained Daniel and other children they took in
- 56:19in the ways of their own deadly martial arts
- 56:21that was centered on quick and efficient execution.
- 56:25Due to this, Pit Viper is considered a rank three
- 56:27superhuman.
- 56:29His heightened sense give him an edge in most fights,
- 56:32keeping him aware of his surroundings and potential
- 56:34threats at all times.
- 56:36And his incredible speed allows him to strike out
- 56:38at his opponent a multitude of times
- 56:40within a couple of seconds.
- 56:42Although originally an assassin for hire,
- 56:44something shifted the focus of Pit Viper
- 56:47to a different calling.
- 56:48We believe it had something to do with falling in with the X-Men.
- 56:51He now works closely with them on missions
- 56:53and will occasionally take work with the US government
- 56:55in jobs dealing with violent terrorist groups
- 56:58and dictator leaders.
- 57:00Although he's considered an asset,
- 57:01we at SHIELD are closely monitoring him and his actions
- 57:05in case he returns to his prior ways.
- 57:08Additionally, we've been searching for the afterlife
- 57:11and their headquarters to little success.
- 57:13We've even gone as far as to interview Pit Viper
- 57:16about his proverbial alma mater,
- 57:18but he was unable or perhaps unwilling to divulge
- 57:21any information.
- 57:22This is Agent Richardson's brief overview analysis
- 57:26on the super known as Pit Viper, signing off.
- 57:29- So that's just kind of what I did.
- 57:34Oh dang.
- 57:35- I'm gonna fall woefully short.
- 57:37- Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, it's totally fine.
- 57:39I went a little overboard with that,
- 57:41but I just thought I was trying to--
- 57:41- No, no, it's good, it's good.
- 57:43- For sure, for sure.
- 57:44So I don't have a summary.
- 57:47- Do you want me to just do it off the cuff?
- 57:49- Yeah, go for it. - Or do you want me
- 57:50to go through it?
- 57:51- Yeah, go through it, or, well, no,
- 57:52you can do it off the cuff, yeah,
- 57:53whatever you feel comfortable with.
- 57:54Or you can go through it as well, like whatever.
- 57:57- Yeah, why don't I just go through it first?
- 57:59I guess--
- 58:00The hero that I created is named Blind Luck.
- 58:10His real name is Paul Lucky Penny, five foot 11.
- 58:14Blind Luck got his superpowers by,
- 58:17okay, let me just say this out loud
- 58:20because I don't know what these things are called,
- 58:22but I know they exist.
- 58:24In real life, I have a friend of mine
- 58:26that fell on hard times, and he heard of this company
- 58:31that would give you money for taking
- 58:34these kind of like experimental drugs.
- 58:36So similar to like if you were to donate plasma
- 58:38or donate blood,
- 58:39he would do this, and again,
- 58:42this is a real guy that I know would do this,
- 58:44and I would always joke with him,
- 58:46like, dude, you're gonna get superpowers.
- 58:49From the, like this, how you get superpowers.
- 58:51And he's like, yeah, this is how you die at an early age
- 58:54from some terminal illness, but anyway.
- 58:57So for Blind Luck, AKA Paul Penny,
- 59:01also known as Lucky Penny,
- 59:03he was part of these different experimental things.
- 59:07And upon doing so, he was exposed to some injection
- 59:12that ended up costing him his vision.
- 59:15And so he's lost his vision,
- 59:17so he's got the weird science origin,
- 59:20but the thing is, this also onset some of his latent ex-gene
- 59:25that he didn't even realize that he had,
- 59:28which has given him abilities of luck.
- 59:31So luck powers, and so Lucky may be blind,
- 59:37however, he's extremely lucky.
- 59:40And so not only does that affect those around him,
- 59:43he's able to give them powers that have to do with luck,
- 59:46but he's also just really good at hitting targets
- 59:50with his different abilities.
- 59:51And so he has the core rulebook
- 59:54called them Elemental Control Powers,
- 59:57where he's able to have these different projectiles.
- 1:00:00In the X-Men expansion,
- 1:00:02you are able to do powers of corrosion.
- 1:00:06And so the idea here is the same corrosion type stuff
- 1:00:11that cost him his vision.
- 1:00:13He's able to project on others,
- 1:00:15not necessarily to blind them,
- 1:00:17but to kind of like project on them.
- 1:00:19And it has a similar corroding effect to where they,
- 1:00:22yeah, he sounds a lot like a villain.
- 1:00:23Now that I say it out loud, he probably should be.
- 1:00:26- I'm almost thinking of,
- 1:00:28have you ever remember the show,
- 1:00:30or sorry, not show, the movie Sky High?
- 1:00:32- Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:33- And they're going through, you know,
- 1:00:34he's telling the kids whether they're either
- 1:00:35the heroes or the sidekicks.
- 1:00:38And there was the one kid that like,
- 1:00:39he spits on the wall and he's like, sidekick.
- 1:00:42And then the kid's like, hold on a second.
- 1:00:43And then it melts, he goes, acid spit hero.
- 1:00:45And I'm thinking like acid spit or something.
- 1:00:48- There we go, exactly like that.
- 1:00:50So a very lucky blind guy that,
- 1:00:54and I'm not gonna say spit,
- 1:00:56'cause that makes it sound really gross,
- 1:00:57but they can shoot essentially energy
- 1:01:01that corrodes things and/or people.
- 1:01:04- The bane of, yeah, somebody with like,
- 1:01:06who's all their powers kind of revolve around them,
- 1:01:08having like a suit or some sort of cybernetic thing.
- 1:01:11Like if he's just blasting their stuff
- 1:01:13with corrosive stuff.
- 1:01:14- Exactly.
- 1:01:15- Like iron heart or Iron Man, obviously.
- 1:01:17- Yeah.
- 1:01:18- Or Iron Lad or any of the iron.
- 1:01:19- Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:20(laughs)
- 1:01:21That's exactly right.
- 1:01:23And this character in particular,
- 1:01:26would really, I mean, this would be somebody
- 1:01:28that you would want in a team.
- 1:01:31- Yeah.
- 1:01:32- Especially because most of his powers have to do with
- 1:01:35giving others luck and jinxing others.
- 1:01:40And so, anyway, that's kind of--
- 1:01:43- He's a buff debuff guy.
- 1:01:44- That's exactly right.
- 1:01:46A buff debuff guy.
- 1:01:47Rank three as well is what I did,
- 1:01:50but he's got a whole lot in agility.
- 1:01:53He's got four in agility.
- 1:01:54And the idea here, again,
- 1:01:57this is where the narrative aspect of it has to come in,
- 1:02:00because yeah, sure, I could have gone with,
- 1:02:03he's like Daredevil.
- 1:02:04He's, you know, his, when one sense diminished,
- 1:02:07another one heightened.
- 1:02:09I could have done that, but I was like,
- 1:02:10no, I really like this idea of,
- 1:02:12no, he's just like super lucky.
- 1:02:14- Sure.
- 1:02:15- And so, his agility is really high,
- 1:02:16and the idea here is that he's just super lucky with it.
- 1:02:19And he knows it.
- 1:02:21- Yeah.
- 1:02:21- And so, anyway, so on top of that,
- 1:02:24he is in the education field.
- 1:02:26- Oh, wow.
- 1:02:27- And so the idea here is that,
- 1:02:29when I said education on his character sheet,
- 1:02:32my idea is he's educating people
- 1:02:34on the effects of these experimental drugs.
- 1:02:36- Oh, sure.
- 1:02:37- And also kind of on special needs, like blindness.
- 1:02:42When I say special needs,
- 1:02:43I'm speaking more about blindness, deafness,
- 1:02:47muteness, that sort of thing.
- 1:02:49- He's a big advocate for people with those, yeah.
- 1:02:52- Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:53And kind of educating others on those different things.
- 1:02:56So anyway, that's kind of who I came up with.
- 1:02:59And really, for me, the X-Men expansion
- 1:03:04is what made me want to do this.
- 1:03:05I'm like, oh, there's luck based?
- 1:03:07- Yeah.
- 1:03:08- There's a luck based power set.
- 1:03:09And so I just thought it was interesting.
- 1:03:11- Interesting.
- 1:03:12I'm gonna have to talk to Cameron about that
- 1:03:14because one of his favorite heroes is Domino.
- 1:03:18- Okay, yeah.
- 1:03:19- And that's kind of her whole thing.
- 1:03:20- Exactly, yeah.
- 1:03:21- And so he would love that.
- 1:03:22We don't have, I don't have the X-Men one.
- 1:03:24I actually have it on a wish list
- 1:03:26'cause when I looked it up and saw that you can get
- 1:03:30more powers and power sets and stuff,
- 1:03:31and I was like, yo, more character creation options?
- 1:03:33That's what I wanna see.
- 1:03:34So.
- 1:03:35- And I do wanna say real quick
- 1:03:37before we go to the Spider-Man one too,
- 1:03:41because I had friends,
- 1:03:43my friend group was like,
- 1:03:45"You know, I don't know if we wanna get the Spider-Man one."
- 1:03:49Just because none of them had a power set
- 1:03:52that was related to Spider powers.
- 1:03:54- Oh, sure, sure.
- 1:03:55- But the thing is they pack those expansions,
- 1:03:58both the X-Men and the Spider-Man ones,
- 1:04:00with so much new stuff where it's like,
- 1:04:02even if you do not have a character that has the X-Gene
- 1:04:06or a character that uses Spider powers,
- 1:04:09like you'll wanna--
- 1:04:11- You'll find something in there.
- 1:04:12- And on top of that, I did wanna say also,
- 1:04:15one of the strongest parts about this,
- 1:04:18as we mentioned earlier, was the characters.
- 1:04:20The fact that in the base game,
- 1:04:23the core rulebook has, I think, 130 ready-to-go characters
- 1:04:28and each one of the expansions has probably about 100
- 1:04:32as well if not more. - Oh my gosh.
- 1:04:33- So like the X-Men has a ton of characters,
- 1:04:36Spider-Man has a ton of characters,
- 1:04:38even the Adventure Module, the Cataclysm of Kang,
- 1:04:41which I'd say is mostly unessential,
- 1:04:45especially if you're not planning on running any,
- 1:04:49running the Adventure Module.
- 1:04:51- For your end, yeah.
- 1:04:52However, there's like 50 or 60 new characters
- 1:04:55in there as well. - Really?
- 1:04:55- It's okay. - It's okay.
- 1:04:57- So no matter what you're getting,
- 1:04:58there's good to be stuff in there that you can use for sure.
- 1:05:00- And it's not like you can,
- 1:05:02I wouldn't even say that you could claim
- 1:05:04that the core rulebook, that Marvel purposely skimped on them
- 1:05:07because there's 130.
- 1:05:09- There's so much stuff in there.
- 1:05:10- This book is huge.
- 1:05:11- Yeah, yeah, and so yeah, there's a ton to choose from
- 1:05:16and the game is very much still alive,
- 1:05:19still very much active.
- 1:05:20- But that's also very exciting to hear.
- 1:05:21- They've announced an Avengers expansion
- 1:05:24that's going to have even more rules.
- 1:05:27And so yeah, it's great.
- 1:05:29It's a great system.
- 1:05:31- Absolutely. - I've enjoyed it.
- 1:05:32- Like I said, when you ran that one shot,
- 1:05:34we had a ton of fun.
- 1:05:35It was just like, it was goofy for sure,
- 1:05:38but it was super fun to be able to play as superheroes.
- 1:05:40I think that's, this is something that does it so well, right?
- 1:05:43There's a handful of different
- 1:05:44superhero-based RPGs out there,
- 1:05:46and there's some that are also pretty simple,
- 1:05:49but this one definitely opens up a lot of opportunity,
- 1:05:52I think.
- 1:05:53- Yeah, I think in a lot of ways,
- 1:05:55the main contender to this Marvel Multiversal Playing Game,
- 1:05:59there's one called Mutants and Masterminds,
- 1:06:01which is also a very popular, very established
- 1:06:04tabletop role-playing game in this genre, I should say.
- 1:06:09But the thing is,
- 1:06:10they're doing two completely different things.
- 1:06:12That one's very crunchy.
- 1:06:14This one's super just easy to pick up.
- 1:06:17And so, I mean, the beauty of it is,
- 1:06:20I don't even see them as competitors,
- 1:06:23because they're doing two completely different things.
- 1:06:26- Right, right, absolutely.
- 1:06:27So if you want something a little bit more crunchy,
- 1:06:29that might be a good option for you.
- 1:06:30But if you want something that's light
- 1:06:31and easy to jump into,
- 1:06:33highly recommend the Marvel Multiverse RPG system for sure.
- 1:06:37- Yep, yep.
- 1:06:38- Awesome, well, Lucas, thank you so much
- 1:06:39for being on the show and talking to us about this system
- 1:06:41and sharing your wealth of knowledge with it.
- 1:06:44I think that was super beneficial.
- 1:06:45And like I said, we played once, had a ton of fun.
- 1:06:48I'm already kind of mentally working through some ideas
- 1:06:51for something that I'd like to run for the podcast.
- 1:06:54So thank you so much for sharing about that and encouraging us.
- 1:06:57- Thanks, thank you for having me.
- 1:06:58I feel honored to be on it.
- 1:06:59And I don't know if I was a wealth of knowledge.
