- 0:16So did you ever think that E bikes would become such a big
- 0:20deal? It's kind of like Back to the
- 0:23Future when Marty McFly was awestruck by all the future
- 0:27technology. Now, back in 2021, the House of
- 0:32Representatives passed the Build Back Better Act, including a
- 0:35$4.1 billion provision in tax credits aimed at promoting
- 0:40electric bikes. Now, this is a sector where even
- 0:44Elon Musk has not ventured yet. Now E bikes have rapidly
- 0:48transitioned from a novelty to a mainstream mode of transport.
- 0:51I see them all over the streets and they provide significant
- 0:54benefits to delivery workers during the pandemic times and
- 0:59commuters now who prefer not to arrive sweaty at their
- 1:02destinations. They don't want to ride a
- 1:04traditional bicycle, so now they have E bikes to zip around the
- 1:08city. And despite some derision over
- 1:12the supposed purity of cycling, with E bike riders accused of
- 1:16taking shortcuts, these electric assists have been instrumental
- 1:20in encouraging people to engage in healthy exercise.
- 1:23This is particularly true for older or less practice cyclists
- 1:27who might otherwise avoid biking due to dotting hills or long
- 1:31distances. Or they're just out of shape.
- 1:33And E bikes are helping to make cycling accessible and enjoyable
- 1:37for a broader audience, pushing more people off the couch and
- 1:40out of the streets. However, high-powered class 3E
- 1:44bikes, which can reach speeds of over 40 mph, have caused
- 1:50friction busy urban areas like New York City.
- 1:52Now these models raise important discussions about the future of
- 1:55urban mobility, suggesting that E bikes could free up St. space,
- 2:00get the cars out of there, offer alternatives to cars, and reduce
- 2:04energy consumption and emissions.
- 2:07Now, California's Air Resources Board recently allocated about
- 2:10$10 million in rebates for E bike purchases.
- 2:13It's a small scale version of tax incentives offered for EVs,
- 2:17like the $7500 government federal rebate for EVs at this
- 2:22time. But the surgeon E bike
- 2:24popularity has spread innovation with new tech ideas emerging
- 2:27such as rain proof cargo bikes, pavement embedded wireless
- 2:31charging and automated stabilization systems for senior
- 2:35riders. City Q is taking pre-orders for
- 2:38a four wheeled cargo bike marketing as providing a Tesla
- 2:43feeling for cyclists. They've already started shipping
- 2:45those by the way. This burst of creativity is
- 2:48transforming the E bike industry and expanding its potential for
- 2:52all users. So back in 2020, about 500,000 E
- 2:56bikes were sold in the US compared to 210,000 plug in
- 3:00cars, according to estimates. And market research firm NPD
- 3:04Group reported that the pandemic led to a 145% increase in E bike
- 3:08sales from 2019 to 2020, more than doubling the growth of
- 3:13traditional bicycles. Now, industry analysts predict
- 3:16this trend will continue, with global E bike market expected to
- 3:21grow from 32.5 billion last year to $53 billion over the course
- 3:28of 2025. Now that's a growth rate of over
- 3:3210%. Now, even in Europe, known for
- 3:35its cycling culture, E bikes sales increased by 23% in 2019.
- 3:39Now, by 2023, there will be or there were over 300 million E
- 3:43bikes on the roads. Now it's a significant shift
- 3:48from the normal transportation trends of regular bikes, with E
- 3:52bikes playing a crucial role in urban mobility and
- 3:55sustainability efforts going forward.
- 3:58Now there's two main types of E bikes though, hub motors and mid
- 4:02drive motors. Now hub motors are built right
- 4:05into the wheel center and are available in two types geared
- 4:08hub motors, which use internal gears to operate efficiently at
- 4:11high RPM, and gearless hub motors which link the motors
- 4:15strata directly to the bike axle, reducing the mechanical
- 4:19wear of the system. Now these motors are affordable,
- 4:22low maintenance and widely produced, making them a popular
- 4:25choice for E bike manufacturers. Now despite these benefits, hub
- 4:29motors have limitations though, particularly when it comes to
- 4:32hill climbs and handling. They typically offer a single
- 4:35gear ratio which is not ideal for steep inclines and can make
- 4:38a bike kind of feel unbalanced. Now, changing tires on hub motor
- 4:42equipped bikes can also be challenging due to the wheel
- 4:46mounted motor. Now mid drive motors on the
- 4:49other hand, which are located inside the bike frame between
- 4:51the pedals, offer a completely different approach.
- 4:55These motors transfer power through the chain drive to the
- 4:58rear wheel, providing significant torque for climbing
- 5:00hills or starting from a standstill.
- 5:03It allows for more efficient power delivery, although it can
- 5:06put additional stress on the bike's chain of gears.
- 5:09But it's not too bad. Now, the main advantage of mid
- 5:11drive motors is their ability to deliver sustained power on long
- 5:15climbs. However, this constant power can
- 5:19wear off chains faster, not too fast, and E bikes with mid drive
- 5:23motors are often equipped with stronger chains to handle the
- 5:26increased load anyway. And if the chain breaks, the
- 5:28bike becomes inoperable, much like a traditional bike.
- 5:32Now, newer mid drive motors are smaller and lighter, often
- 5:35integrated into the bike frame to maintain a sleek, stealthy
- 5:38appearance. Now both hub and mid drive
- 5:41motors use sensors to detect pedal force for wheel rotation,
- 5:45activating the motor to assist the driver or the rider.
- 5:49And mid drive motors typically use torque sensors for smoother
- 5:52power delivery. With hub, motors often rely on
- 5:55cadence sensors, which can lead to less consistent motor
- 5:59assistance. Now, battery range is a
- 6:02significant consideration for E bike users.
- 6:05While some companies claim ranges of up to 100 miles, real
- 6:09world conditions often resert in much lower figures.
- 6:12Variables such as rider weight, wind resistance, and also the
- 6:16terrain you're riding on can all impact battery for performance
- 6:20just like any other electric vehicle.
- 6:23But generally E bikes with about 750 Watt motors and 480 Watt
- 6:29hour batteries can go about 20 miles on battery power alone and
- 6:34up to about 32 miles with pedal assist.
- 6:38So that's pretty good, 20 miles on a battery charge.
- 6:41You just have to charge it up when you get there.
- 6:43That's not too bad, it's good for zipping around town too.
- 6:46Now the added weight of E bike battery is usually between 6 and
- 6:498 lbs. Not really heavy, but over time
- 6:53it feels it and it also affects the handling and requires more
- 6:56effect or more effort from the rider when the battery is
- 7:00depleted. Battery placement also impacts
- 7:03the bike's balance. Rear rack mounted batteries are
- 7:06easy to access but can make the bike feel top heavy.
- 7:10Down to mounted batteries are more balanced while integrated
- 7:13down to batteries offer the best aesthetic and also handling.
- 7:16Now the three class system promoted by people for bikes
- 7:19categorizes E bikes based on the resist type and maximum speed.
- 7:24Class 1E bikes providing pedal assist up to 20 mph.
- 7:28Class 2 is 20 mph but include a throttle for motor only
- 7:33propulsion. Class 3E bikes are pedal assist
- 7:36only but can reach speeds of up to 20 mph.
- 7:40Systems help. They help standardize the
- 7:42regulations and guide consumers and choosing the right E bike
- 7:45for their needs. Now class 3E bikes are the
- 7:48fastest. They're typically restricted to
- 7:50roadways and bike lanes, avoiding multi use pass shared
- 7:53with pedestrians. In Europe E bike E mountain
- 7:56bikes are EMT. BS are generally accepted on non
- 8:00motorized trails, but in the US federal agencies like the Forest
- 8:03Service and National Park Service classify EMT BS as
- 8:07motorized vehicles, limiting their trail access.
- 8:11Now E bike prices vary widely. You can get them for anywhere
- 8:16from I've seen them for $400.00 on sale at Best Buy and Walmart.
- 8:23Things like that. They could go up to ten, $15,000
- 8:27too. So it depends on what you need
- 8:31it for and also your price range.
- 8:34So you want to be aware of how powerful your motor is, what
- 8:40kind of connectivity you have, luxurious components like is the
- 8:43seat really soft? Are you going to take a long
- 8:45ride? What kind of seat do you want?
- 8:47Does it have a a storage compartment?
- 8:49Is it four wheels or two wheels or three wheels?
- 8:51It's up to you. And of course paint.
- 8:55And are you going to commute with it?
- 8:57Is it going to be a a short commute where you go, you know,
- 9:005 minutes, 10 minutes, maybe 20 minutes?
- 9:03Or are you going to take longer rides for 30 minutes to an hour?
- 9:08That's all up the question and how much you going to pay for
- 9:10it? So giant Trek, specialized in
- 9:13Schwinn, they've all embraced E bikes and BMW has also made E
- 9:17bikes. Porsche has a majority stake in
- 9:21Gray, PA high end bike company powered or founded by electric
- 9:26hypercar entrepreneur, signaling the automotive industry interest
- 9:31in E bikes. I mean, I don't, I do understand
- 9:33why they're doing it, but somebody like Porsche doesn't
- 9:36really need an E bike. They have wonderful cars, so
- 9:39they don't really need E bikes, but it's a good way to diversify
- 9:43their portfolio I guess. Now, E bikes, of course, are
- 9:46very popular now. You see them everywhere.
- 9:48They're becoming an integral part of urban transportation
- 9:51solutions. I see them all over the place
- 9:53now. And as more people adopt E bikes
- 9:56for commuting, recreation and delivery services, the benefits
- 9:59of reduced emission, lower energy consumption and improved
- 10:02accessibility are becoming increasingly evident.
- 10:06Now remember there's three types of E bikes so far, the three
- 10:09class systems. So 20 mph and that's for 1/2 is
- 10:1620 mph for motor only propulsion in class three are pedaled
- 10:21assist. So choose wisely when you go out
- 10:24there and grab an E bike anywhere from 400 ish 4 to $500
- 10:30to 10,000 you can get them really tricked out.
