Latest / The Follow-On / Domesticated - Ducks for main contenders, centuries for outside chances: Where Ashes hopefuls stand now
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, it was ducks for the premiere Ashes contenders, centuries
- 0:04Speaker 1: for the crop further a little bit further back. So
- 0:07Speaker 1: what does it all mean? Welcome to Domesticated. I'm justin Edwards,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Fox Screet's Nick Savage is alongside me.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Nick.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Let's start with one of the duck makers, Jake Weatherwold
- 0:16Speaker 1: zero and twelve. We had him on the show in
- 0:19Speaker 1: our last show and now he was coming off with
- 0:22Speaker 1: great innings, a bit tougher in this shield match.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Well yeah, in both innings.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Down in Victoria, he was tasked with walking out with
- 0:28Speaker 3: about thirty minutes to go, which is obviously one of
- 0:31Speaker 3: the toughest situations for any open and red bull cricket,
- 0:34Speaker 3: and he couldn't do it. On both occasions he fell
- 0:36Speaker 3: before stumps. It should be acknowledged that he in both
- 0:39Speaker 3: occasions was dismissed by beauty of delivery by Perry and
- 0:43Speaker 3: a favorite of ours Ferguson Neil on both occasions, but
- 0:46Speaker 3: obviously terrible timing with a squad expected for the Ashes
- 0:50Speaker 3: this week, especially with a lot of the other kind
- 0:52Speaker 3: of contenders as you mentioned, struggling.
- 0:55Speaker 2: A bit this week.
- 0:55Speaker 3: If he had gotten some runs, even if he had
- 0:57Speaker 3: gotten through that tough period, he could have really his
- 1:00Speaker 3: name up there for a potential debut.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I still think he's a gun.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I still think he's a good chance of maybe earning
- 1:06Speaker 3: a Baggy Green this summer. Depends on a lot of factors,
- 1:09Speaker 3: the makeup of the Test side. Does Marnus open stuff
- 1:12Speaker 3: We'll talk about in a second, But yeah, not not
- 1:14Speaker 3: great timing from him.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And did it felt like had he got a big score,
- 1:19Speaker 1: had he go to Bee hundreds, you could almost lock
- 1:22Speaker 1: him in for a baggy green. That's how it was
- 1:24Speaker 1: shaping three centuries in his first three half century, sorry,
- 1:27Speaker 1: in his first four innings to start the Shield season,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and then goes zero and twelve. With the Ash squad
- 1:33Speaker 1: being named this week, it's just the wrong time for that.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So we'll see how that happens with Jake Weatherwood. The
- 1:39Speaker 1: other duck came from Cameron Green, who another player that
- 1:43Speaker 1: we're looking at for the Ashes.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Zero got forty one in the.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Second innings, but the game was largely dead then and
- 1:49Speaker 1: didn't bowl, So there's a lot of questions about Cameron
- 1:52Speaker 1: Green at the moment.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, him not bowling for me feels like more of
- 1:56Speaker 3: an issue he has one more shield around next week
- 1:59Speaker 3: to get some overs.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Under his belt.
- 2:00Speaker 3: But we're talking about a player who is expected to
- 2:03Speaker 3: be Australia's first choice all rounder for the Ashes and
- 2:07Speaker 3: this year he's bowled four overs still in competitive cricket
- 2:11Speaker 3: and that's just not enough overs under his belt. It
- 2:13Speaker 3: is reassuring to see this footage came out of him
- 2:15Speaker 3: bowling about twenty minutes half an hour after the match
- 2:19Speaker 3: in the middle.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Of the pitch. Great to see.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I don't think it was at one hundred percent necessarily,
- 2:22Speaker 3: but he's going through his action. But he needs to
- 2:24Speaker 3: be bowling spells. There are going to be times this
- 2:27Speaker 3: summer when the big quicks and line will need to
- 2:29Speaker 3: be rotated. They'll need a half hour break and that's
- 2:32Speaker 3: when Green and potentially Webster will be crucial. So if
- 2:35Speaker 3: Green's not bowling for that first Test, he may be
- 2:38Speaker 3: squeeze out of that eleven because he's not getting the
- 2:40Speaker 3: runs either. He's yet to get a fifty this season
- 2:43Speaker 3: since the World Test Championship Final in June. He only
- 2:46Speaker 3: has one fifty and I was in the West Indies.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Is he going to be Australia's number three? It makes
- 2:52Speaker 3: sense from a team balance point of view, but minus
- 2:56Speaker 3: Abushein is just the best number three in the country.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We'll spend this just before we went on air. He
- 3:00Speaker 2: has been batting so well.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Right now as we're chatting, he's on eighty odd in
- 3:03Speaker 3: a One Day Cup game. He's the best number three
- 3:06Speaker 3: Australia has had in a generation. So to me, it
- 3:09Speaker 3: feels like that should be Marster's spot. Kawaj just said
- 3:11Speaker 3: that as well. He'd love to see his Queens and
- 3:14Speaker 3: team at batting it through and Green considering his form,
- 3:17Speaker 3: considering he maybe needed as a bowler, to give him
- 3:19Speaker 3: a rest after potentially a long spell in the field,
- 3:22Speaker 3: Green at six makes sense tough, Webster. I know he
- 3:25Speaker 3: hasn't been in the runs either, but yeah, a lot
- 3:28Speaker 3: of questions for national selectors over the next few days.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Webster.
- 3:31Speaker 1: If he had to put one hundred on the board,
- 3:32Speaker 1: that changes the conversation as well. But he had a
- 3:34Speaker 1: disappointing game eleven and six with the bat. Took one
- 3:38Speaker 1: week here. Got Marcus Harris out in the first innings
- 3:40Speaker 1: opened the bowling as well, although I'm not sure how
- 3:42Speaker 1: much we can read into that because Marnus Labashaine opened
- 3:44Speaker 1: the bowling for Queensland in one of the innings.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It does.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It feels like in Australia's first Test eleven it'll be
- 3:51Speaker 1: two of Labashane will be there and it'll be two
- 3:54Speaker 1: of weather Alled, Webster and Green. Which two do you
- 4:00Speaker 1: think it's going to be at the moment? I think
- 4:01Speaker 1: it'll be weather Alled and Green despite the duck boys
- 4:06Speaker 1: at the moment. Despite that, I think it's going to
- 4:08Speaker 1: be them. What do you think that's who I would pick?
- 4:11Speaker 3: If I was in Georgia Valley's position, that that is
- 4:13Speaker 3: who i'd pick. I feel as though they are going
- 4:15Speaker 3: to stick by their policy of the six best batters
- 4:18Speaker 3: in the country and kind of squeeze them in and
- 4:20Speaker 3: manipulate them however they can. So I think they're going
- 4:23Speaker 3: to go minus opening with Cameron Green three and Bowebster
- 4:28Speaker 3: at six. I don't love that necessarily a lot of
- 4:32Speaker 3: talents to bowling options. It does make sense in that regard,
- 4:34Speaker 3: but yes, I'm in your boat as well. I'd love
- 4:36Speaker 3: to see a specialist opener. It's probably worth acknowledging as well.
- 4:39Speaker 3: With Green, he's duck. In the first innings he smoked
- 4:42Speaker 3: it to cover. It was a beautiful, full blooded off
- 4:45Speaker 3: drive towards like a mid off cover either side too
- 4:47Speaker 3: many it was a boundary, so yes, a duck. It's
- 4:52Speaker 3: a bit of a cliche, but he's going about it
- 4:53Speaker 3: the right way. He does still look okay at the crease.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I just don't want to see him batting in the
- 4:58Speaker 3: first few overs of a Test. I want to see
- 5:00Speaker 3: him coming in in that sort of counterpunching knock at
- 5:03Speaker 3: number six, which he's done very well in the past.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, options there for Australia, and there is still one
- 5:08Speaker 1: more shield game before that first Ashes Test, which we
- 5:11Speaker 1: think the entire Ashes squad just about is going to play.
- 5:14Speaker 1: News today that Travis Head is going to skip the
- 5:17Speaker 1: last couple of T twenties against India to play a
- 5:19Speaker 1: bit of shield cricket.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So for first class.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Lovers like you and I, that shield round is going
- 5:24Speaker 1: to be blockbuster. Brendan Doggett, let's move to the quicks now.
- 5:28Speaker 1: He looks like he's going to be in that Ashes
- 5:30Speaker 1: squad six for forty eight. He got he missed the
- 5:32Speaker 1: first couple of games with the hamstring injury, but just
- 5:34Speaker 1: came back, hasn't missed beat.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah, if he's fit he's in that squad. He's obviously
- 5:39Speaker 3: been the reserve for a while now. He's in the
- 5:42Speaker 3: touring squad for the West Indies tour before he had
- 5:45Speaker 3: an injury then as well. His own worst enemy is
- 5:47Speaker 3: his own body. Unfortunately, he's had so many niggles over
- 5:50Speaker 3: the last few years.
- 5:51Speaker 2: It's pretty frustrating for him.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But if he can stay fit, he's a very good
- 5:54Speaker 3: chance of making his debut this summer and he deserves it.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Six Fergainst India a last summer ten weeks. It's in
- 6:00Speaker 3: the Shield final six for here at the Whacka.
- 6:03Speaker 2: He really has to be in that squad.
- 6:04Speaker 3: He's consistent, he's quick, he's talented, skillful.
- 6:07Speaker 2: He really should be there.
- 6:09Speaker 1: If I said to you, Brendan Doggett will play Test cricket,
- 6:13Speaker 1: would you think that's being too grandiose at this point?
- 6:16Speaker 3: I suspect so, I think because he will be in
- 6:19Speaker 3: that squad for that first Test, but may not play
- 6:22Speaker 3: for obvious reasons. They've got Ball and Stark Hazer with there,
- 6:25Speaker 3: and then Penning how the national sectors go about things.
- 6:27Speaker 3: There are big breaks between those first three Tests. There's
- 6:30Speaker 3: a chance that if the pitches are lively and the
- 6:32Speaker 3: match is done three or four days. The same three
- 6:34Speaker 3: quicks will play those first three Tests, and then Cummins
- 6:37Speaker 3: might be available, Joy Richardson might be available. The might
- 6:40Speaker 3: go horses of courses and go Michael Nissa at the
- 6:42Speaker 3: Gabba with a pink ball. It's not a locked thing
- 6:45Speaker 3: that he will make that Test debut, but I think
- 6:47Speaker 3: it's a very good chance. Here is that first reserve,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and if the nationallyctor stick with a similar policy to
- 6:53Speaker 3: the batters, the four best quicks who are available, and
- 6:55Speaker 3: they do rotate through player management, he's a good chance
- 6:58Speaker 3: of playing at some stage this summer.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I think even not this summer.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Looking further ahead to the future now he is past thirty,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but I think he's got enough years left in him
- 7:08Speaker 1: that with Australia rotating some quicks around, there's a big
- 7:11Speaker 1: congested twelve months from October twenty six to October twenty seven.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I think at some point we will see Brendan Doggett
- 7:18Speaker 1: in a baggy green. Whether that's this summer or not,
- 7:21Speaker 1: we'll have to wait and see, and that depends on
- 7:22Speaker 1: the fitness of the other quicks, because he's not going
- 7:24Speaker 1: to jump ahead of any of the other four. I
- 7:26Speaker 1: don't think the other quicks.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It looks as though.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Sean Abbott and Michael Nissa are the other two in contention.
- 7:30Speaker 1: We don't think the selectors are going to go with
- 7:32Speaker 1: Fergus O'Neil just yet. And their moves in taking Abbott
- 7:36Speaker 1: out of the T twenty squad, in giving Nissa a
- 7:38Speaker 1: rest from the last Shill game, it looks like those
- 7:41Speaker 1: are the next guys in line Nissa perhaps maybe in
- 7:45Speaker 1: the pink ball Test in Brisbane. Is that how you're
- 7:47Speaker 1: saying it?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, certainly.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I think they are the three that have been name
- 7:50Speaker 3: checked by the national selectors in the past. It would
- 7:52Speaker 3: obviously be a great story for Sean Abbott, so you know,
- 7:55Speaker 3: he's been stored of domestic cricket for twelve years. For
- 7:58Speaker 3: him to finally in that baggy green in and out
- 8:00Speaker 3: the Test scord for five years. Anissa deserves it. He's
- 8:03Speaker 3: an absolute gun. He's been so consistent for Queensland. Has
- 8:06Speaker 3: anyone taken more wickets at the Gabba over the past
- 8:09Speaker 3: decade I doubt it.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So he's very deserving as well.
- 8:12Speaker 3: There've been a lot of panic about the pace cartel,
- 8:15Speaker 3: but there are a lot of experienced talented quicks in
- 8:17Speaker 3: the side who I think are ready for Test cricket.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And you mentioned Fergus O'Neil. I said it a few
- 8:22Speaker 3: weeks ago twenty twenty seven ashes in England. I think
- 8:24Speaker 3: that's when we should get Fergus O'Neil in there. He's
- 8:27Speaker 3: perfectly suited for those conditions.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Plenty of time for him another Victorian Campbell Kellaway did
- 8:33Speaker 1: and he set the world on fire in that innings
- 8:35Speaker 1: one hundred and forty seven. Only Manus Labushane's got a
- 8:38Speaker 1: highest scorer in the Sheffi, which she was so far
- 8:40Speaker 1: this season. We spoke about kell Away at the start
- 8:43Speaker 1: of the summer about his potential. He's turned twenty three
- 8:46Speaker 1: over the weekend. He is a player of the future
- 8:50Speaker 1: to watch for Australia and it might be coming sooner
- 8:52Speaker 1: than we all think.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Seriously talented player.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we saw recently that Australia a tour
- 8:58Speaker 3: to India, Kellaway and Sam Constas opened the batting. That
- 9:02Speaker 3: could be a show as Test opening partnership for a decade.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Kawaja is obviously very close to the end of his
- 9:07Speaker 3: Test career. That might be this summer. It might be
- 9:09Speaker 3: next year. We don't know that for sure, but when
- 9:11Speaker 3: he does, step aside, Constaus and Kellowy are the two
- 9:14Speaker 3: people who could slot into that role. I think for
- 9:16Speaker 3: sure he's a star of the future. He's getting runs.
- 9:20Speaker 3: His only thing now is consistency. He seems to be
- 9:22Speaker 3: in a period where he's either out for single figures
- 9:25Speaker 3: or he goes on to get one hundred. If you
- 9:27Speaker 3: just convert some of those single figures to getting through
- 9:29Speaker 3: the new ball, getting even just a knitty gritty thirty forty,
- 9:33Speaker 3: or just to set a platform, if he can consistently
- 9:36Speaker 3: do that time and time again, he's going to be
- 9:38Speaker 3: a gun for the future. He obviously wasn't opening twelve
- 9:40Speaker 3: months ago. Only was thrown into that role in November
- 9:43Speaker 3: last year, and he's been Victoria's leading run score since.
- 9:46Speaker 1: And that is he's still learning how to open, he's
- 9:49Speaker 1: still learning what getting through the new ball looks like.
- 9:51Speaker 1: He's only done it for twelve months or so, but
- 9:53Speaker 1: he's got three Shef Foo Shield centuries in those twelve months.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I think he's making a case and if he continues
- 9:59Speaker 1: in this form, he's making a case to be us.
- 10:03Speaker 1: When Kowaja's first long term replacement ahead of Sam Constace
- 10:06Speaker 1: because he looks a more complete player. Constace is still
- 10:10Speaker 1: very much learning and Constace is twenty. He's got so
- 10:13Speaker 1: much time. Kellaway perhaps looks a little more ready than
- 10:17Speaker 1: Sam Constace does, even though Constas has already played Test cricket.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I mean you sum it up perfectly there. Constaince is twenty.
- 10:24Speaker 3: His technique is still coming under the microscope. He hasn't
- 10:27Speaker 3: looked his best even this week in the Shield with
- 10:30Speaker 3: the match basically done up. In the Gabba, he got
- 10:32Speaker 3: out slogging skying one to mid off. It was a
- 10:34Speaker 3: pretty ugly dismissal. But he's still working out his game.
- 10:38Speaker 3: He only has three first class tons and two of
- 10:40Speaker 3: those were in the same match about fourteen months ago,
- 10:43Speaker 3: so he's still work in progress. Everyone has been saying
- 10:45Speaker 3: the same thing. He's still finding his own game. Kellaway
- 10:49Speaker 3: is close. It's looking like a complete first class and
- 10:51Speaker 3: potentially Test cricketer.
- 10:53Speaker 2: So I support you there.
- 10:54Speaker 3: He's a very good chance when Kowaja hangs up the
- 10:56Speaker 3: boots to take that role at the top of the order.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Camill Kellaway my best innings of the round of Shield cricket,
- 11:01Speaker 1: but there were a lot of hundreds. There were eight
- 11:03Speaker 1: centuries in this round of Shield cricket, which is the
- 11:05Speaker 1: same amount as they were in the first two put together.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So lots of.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Batsman putting their hand up and I'm calling the centuries
- 11:12Speaker 1: for the forgotten men of Australian cricket. There were lots
- 11:15Speaker 1: of them. Cameron Bancroft got one hundred and twenty two
- 11:17Speaker 1: for wa like forgotten man in Australian cricket. Is there
- 11:21Speaker 1: any way back him into Australian into an Australian fold?
- 11:25Speaker 3: Do you think it feels too little too late? I mean,
- 11:28Speaker 3: there's obviously a few names I've mentioned just before. They're
- 11:30Speaker 3: still probably ahead of him in the apparent pecking order.
- 11:33Speaker 2: He's got experience.
- 11:35Speaker 3: He a couple of years ago was probably the most
- 11:37Speaker 3: consistent batter, but his time was probably when David Warner retired.
- 11:41Speaker 2: That was probably his time to take that role.
- 11:43Speaker 3: And in the end National electors didn't go for specialist opener.
- 11:46Speaker 3: They've been cycling through trying to reinvent middle order players
- 11:50Speaker 3: as open as since none of them have worked out.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Labiche might join that kind of cycle this summer, and
- 11:56Speaker 3: unfortunately since in the last years he just hasn't been
- 11:58Speaker 3: consistent enough, so it feels a little bit too late
- 12:01Speaker 3: for him unfortunately. But you know, he's still in his
- 12:04Speaker 3: early thirties. Look at all the great players, Chris Rodgers,
- 12:06Speaker 3: Michael Hussey, who oh kawaja mean? He was thirty five
- 12:09Speaker 3: when he came back into the Test side and has
- 12:11Speaker 3: since been probably the form opener and the world in
- 12:13Speaker 3: Test cricket. So not the summer for Bancroft. I think
- 12:17Speaker 3: he just needs to start banging the door down again.
- 12:20Speaker 3: One great knock isn't probably enough.
- 12:22Speaker 1: YEA similar situation for Marcus Harris. It feels like he
- 12:26Speaker 1: got one hundred and one not out for Victoria. But
- 12:27Speaker 1: it does feel like Australian cricket has moved on from
- 12:31Speaker 1: Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris. Twelve months ago, going into
- 12:34Speaker 1: the first Test against India, they were seed number one
- 12:37Speaker 1: and seed number two in the bat off and then
- 12:39Speaker 1: McSweeney came from nowhere and Constance came from even more
- 12:42Speaker 1: nowhere to overtake both of them. It feels like Australian
- 12:46Speaker 1: cricket is done with those two. I think Curtis Patterson
- 12:49Speaker 1: might have better claims, especially if if you were to
- 12:53Speaker 1: get an injury to Marnus or Steve Smith for a
- 12:55Speaker 1: number three or a number four. He got a big
- 12:57Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty two and the same meanings that
- 12:59Speaker 1: Smith got one hundred as expected. Steve Smith comes back
- 13:02Speaker 1: to shield cricket, shows he's better than everybody else. But
- 13:04Speaker 1: Patterson played really well at the Gamma.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I think with Curtis Patterson, he's also been in
- 13:09Speaker 3: a little bit short of consistency this summer. His ideal
- 13:12Speaker 3: spot's number three, and Marnus is obviously slightly superior to
- 13:16Speaker 3: him in that regard. So Curtis, is there a chance
- 13:19Speaker 3: he could open this summer. That's a question that was
- 13:22Speaker 3: posed to his coach Greg Ship earlier this season, and
- 13:25Speaker 3: he had no doubt that Curtis could open. There'll be
- 13:27Speaker 3: a massive smoke he considering he made his Test debut
- 13:30Speaker 3: at six and did very very well against Cholanka five
- 13:32Speaker 3: years ago or so now, but it seems like he's
- 13:35Speaker 3: a bit of an outsider again, someone in his early thirties.
- 13:39Speaker 2: If there's injury, if there's.
- 13:40Speaker 3: A massive dip in form, he's a chance for that
- 13:43Speaker 3: three spot potentially. But I think, you know, as I said,
- 13:46Speaker 3: for a few people today. There's probably a couple of
- 13:48Speaker 3: names ahead of him at this stage.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It feels like all those guys Bancroft, Harris Patterson and
- 13:52Speaker 1: also Nathan McSweeney who got one hundred, which was great
- 13:55Speaker 1: to see him back in the runs. That was his
- 13:56Speaker 1: first hundred since playing Test cricket for Australia. It feels
- 14:00Speaker 1: like if they had to put that innings in the
- 14:02Speaker 1: first Shield round, put that big market down and then
- 14:05Speaker 1: with that confidence going to the second and third maybe
- 14:09Speaker 1: get another big one that would have them right in
- 14:11Speaker 1: the frame. But the guy that did that was Manus.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He put four hundreds together across the One Day Cap
- 14:17Speaker 1: and the Shield cricket and that's just completely shut the
- 14:19Speaker 1: door on these guys.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I have to check.
- 14:20Speaker 3: The scores might be five to hundreds for Marnas now
- 14:23Speaker 3: Nathan McSween, I guess I like some of those other.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Names, he's still in his mid twenties.
- 14:26Speaker 3: He's still got a long way to go, and obviously
- 14:29Speaker 3: I think it's fair to say it was a mistake
- 14:31Speaker 3: making him open against India. He is a perfect number four.
- 14:34Speaker 3: He's a great number four. Whenever Steve Smith retires, Green
- 14:38Speaker 3: and McSweeney were probably the two guys they're looking at
- 14:40Speaker 3: taking that number four slot. I saw see McSweeney having
- 14:43Speaker 3: a great Test career ahead of him. He's obviously considered
- 14:46Speaker 3: a leader as well. He's Captain Australia on a number
- 14:48Speaker 3: of tours and series now, so plenty of time for
- 14:51Speaker 3: McSweeney as well. You'll just have to wait and see
- 14:54Speaker 3: how the team sort of shapes over the next twenty
- 14:57Speaker 3: four months. As we expect it will be a few
- 14:58Speaker 3: retirements with Steve smith or was mcquija the bowlers, those
- 15:02Speaker 3: gaps are opening and it's those young guys will certainly be,
- 15:05Speaker 3: you know, front of the Q.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's another great innings in that South Australian game for
- 15:08Speaker 1: Jake Lehman got in the nineties. Jack Clayton got a
- 15:10Speaker 1: hundred for Queensland as well. He's one that could maybe
- 15:14Speaker 1: push in a couple of years. He's one another one
- 15:16Speaker 1: that's got age on his side. Is a little bit
- 15:17Speaker 1: older than Constance and Kellaway, but still the right side
- 15:21Speaker 1: of thirty and if potentially when Steve Smithin's out of
- 15:24Speaker 1: the team in the next couple of years, Clayton is
- 15:26Speaker 1: potentially a contender along with guys like McSweeney if he
- 15:28Speaker 1: puts quite a few hundreds together, is that how you
- 15:30Speaker 1: see him?
- 15:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think those names Lehman Clayton. I think Australia
- 15:35Speaker 3: A is probably the next sort of spot for them.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I'm not too sure when the next Australia A series is.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Well against the England lines that's going aligns with the
- 15:43Speaker 1: second Ashes Test exactly right.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's early December.
- 15:46Speaker 3: That's probably a good chance for those younger players to
- 15:50Speaker 3: get a chance.
- 15:51Speaker 2: To prove their worth. Yeah, they're probably still a couple
- 15:53Speaker 2: of years away.
- 15:54Speaker 3: From serious contention, but get runs underbelt performed for Australia
- 15:57Speaker 3: A and you know there's going to be Prime Minister
- 16:00Speaker 3: Eleven's games coming up in the next couple of seasons too.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I'd love the National sectors give these names ago. That's
- 16:05Speaker 3: the perfect opportunity of blood them and then higher on
- 16:08Speaker 3: as a weight.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I think we might see a pretty Victorian heavy Australia
- 16:11Speaker 1: A team. I think Kellaway will be there and I
- 16:13Speaker 1: think the bowling attack could have both Fergus O'Neill and
- 16:16Speaker 1: Mitch Perry. Mitch Perry with a five for Fergus O'Neil
- 16:19Speaker 1: got four fur and the Victor three from three to
- 16:21Speaker 1: start the.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Shield season only I was bowling one of the best
- 16:24Speaker 3: spells in Shield and that second things he was genuinely unplayable.
- 16:27Speaker 3: He was the keeper was up to the stumps, but
- 16:30Speaker 3: he was still maneuvering it, beating the edge on countless occasions.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Here the ball on the string, he looks so fantastic.
- 16:36Speaker 3: The one downside with him is obviously the pace. He's
- 16:39Speaker 3: not up to the pace of Stark Hazel would commins,
- 16:42Speaker 3: but yeah, he's an absolute gun.
- 16:44Speaker 2: He looks normal.
- 16:44Speaker 3: The Victorian bowling attack is probably the strongest in the
- 16:47Speaker 3: country at the moment, especially when you're slot Scott.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Boland in there.
- 16:50Speaker 3: It's phenomenal. A lot of exciting young quicks and yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 3: three from three is this the year Victoria get that
- 16:56Speaker 3: Shield title back under their belt again.
- 16:58Speaker 2: It's looking pretty solid.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It could be Will Sutherland Todd Murphy in that bowling
- 17:02Speaker 1: attack as well. And what I am very excited for
- 17:05Speaker 1: is in this next round of Shield cricket, where we're
- 17:07Speaker 1: going to have the whole Australian squad coming.
- 17:09Speaker 2: This new South Wales.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Victoria clash is going to be a new South Wales
- 17:14Speaker 1: bowling attack of Stark Hazlewood Lion and Sean Abbott bowling
- 17:19Speaker 1: to Campbell Kellaway at the top of the order. That'll
- 17:20Speaker 1: test his test potential certainly. Then you'll have Scott Bowland
- 17:24Speaker 1: bowling to Sam Constace, which did not go well for
- 17:26Speaker 1: him in the One Day Cup game. Didn't go well
- 17:28Speaker 1: for Constace, so I cannot wait to see that game.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And what's going to be a big round of shield
- 17:33Speaker 1: cricket with Travis Head, all these Test guys come into play.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Everyone gets to the SCG if you're in Sydney, gets
- 17:39Speaker 3: to the SCG next week. That is that's going to
- 17:41Speaker 3: be one of the highest standard of shield games we've
- 17:43Speaker 3: had in a while, having all them available. Obviously for
- 17:46Speaker 3: the Test guys, this is a good chance for them
- 17:48Speaker 3: just to test their bodies. Essentially, a lot of those
- 17:52Speaker 3: names you mentioned haven't done four day five day cricket
- 17:54Speaker 3: since the West Indies tour. Essentially, Haeswood looks amazing during
- 17:58Speaker 3: this one white ball series against India, he's been phenomenal.
- 18:01Speaker 2: He's been putting the ball in an.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Absolute dime, So good chance for him just to build
- 18:05Speaker 3: up his workloads head of that first Test. Hopefully chance
- 18:08Speaker 3: for some of the batters to get some runs under
- 18:10Speaker 3: the belt, just a bit of confidence head the ashes. Yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 3: what an awesome round of Shield and hopefully a lot
- 18:15Speaker 3: of eyeballs on this competition as well.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah, And speaking more broadly, do you think George Bailey
- 18:19Speaker 1: in the selection panel will have their idea of the
- 18:22Speaker 1: first ashes eleven prior to this Shield round or do
- 18:25Speaker 1: you think there could still be a spot up for grabs.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Bailey strikes me.
- 18:28Speaker 1: As the kind of guy that likes to make the
- 18:30Speaker 1: decisions a little bit further in advance. He doesn't like
- 18:32Speaker 1: that added stress on a round of Shield cricket. But
- 18:36Speaker 1: you can't ignore Foreman that will be the most recent
- 18:39Speaker 1: form going into the Shield game. It's like we're trying
- 18:43Speaker 1: to pick a Melbourne Cup winner at the moment. You've
- 18:44Speaker 1: got to look at the most recent race. If Jake
- 18:47Speaker 1: Weatherwild gets a hundred for Tasmania this week Tasmania are
- 18:50Speaker 1: playing in Hobart against South Australia, especially if it's a
- 18:53Speaker 1: tricky deck that does so much for his case, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: if he's not in the squad name this week, I
- 19:01Speaker 1: think that's a mistake. I think Australia should they should
- 19:03Speaker 1: name a big squad this week and give themselves lots
- 19:06Speaker 1: of options going at Perth.
- 19:07Speaker 3: I suspect they will have an idea of the National
- 19:10Speaker 3: selectors of what their top six will be or what
- 19:12Speaker 3: there eleven will be. The one caveat I think will
- 19:15Speaker 3: be Cameron Green. I think him bowling and him batting,
- 19:18Speaker 3: him getting overs on the belt, that will go a
- 19:21Speaker 3: long way in determining that lineup, because if Green is
- 19:24Speaker 3: not fit as a bowler, if he cannot serve as
- 19:26Speaker 3: an all rounder, it feels like bo Webster's a must.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Then it feels like he's a lock, and that will
- 19:31Speaker 3: go a long way in Webster's case of playing.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And then obviously the order will jig around that.
- 19:35Speaker 3: So while as you said, there will be a big
- 19:37Speaker 3: Ashes squad, there'll probably should be a special so opener
- 19:40Speaker 3: in there, whether that's a Renshaw or a Weather or all.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I think that final eleven will come down so much
- 19:46Speaker 3: to Green. He feels like the final determining factor in
- 19:49Speaker 3: what team will come up against England in Perth.
- 19:52Speaker 2: So wait and see.
- 19:53Speaker 3: We just want to see Green rolling in bowling, bounces,
- 19:57Speaker 3: swinging the ball. We just want to see him fit
- 19:59Speaker 3: because if feels like such a frustrating start to his
- 20:01Speaker 3: career and every time he seems to come back, a
- 20:03Speaker 3: little niggle pops up.
- 20:04Speaker 2: He's ruled out of the One Day series. It's been
- 20:06Speaker 2: a frustrating time.
- 20:08Speaker 3: If he can be fit, he's in there and I
- 20:10Speaker 3: think the starting even feels pretty clear.
- 20:13Speaker 1: We will get our first look at that wa taking
- 20:15Speaker 1: on Queensland at the Whacker. The other two matches Tasmania
- 20:19Speaker 1: against South Australian Hobart and then the big one, New
- 20:21Speaker 1: South Wales in Victoria at the SCG. Nick Savage, thanks
- 20:25Speaker 1: for your company to the next round of Sheffield Shield cricket,
- 20:27Speaker 1: underway on Monday, the fifteenth of November. Every ball on
- 20:31Speaker 1: KO Sports.
