- 0:00Hey everybody, we're going to do this episode a little
- 0:01differently. We just had, we had a listener
- 0:03recently reach out with a powerful question.
- 0:06They listened to an episode back.
- 0:08It was episode #46 recorded back in March.
- 0:11And she asked several questions. Let me just tell you about this
- 0:14first one. There was a question was asked,
- 0:17where does the 3 second rule fit into the brain sexual response
- 0:21cycle? I really appreciated her and her
- 0:25partner bringing up some questions.
- 0:26I guess they listen to the podcast and I got their
- 0:30permission. They said we could bring these
- 0:31three questions in because I think, frankly, a lot of people
- 0:34are going to be thinking some of the same things they're asking,
- 0:37specifically the betrayed partner.
- 0:40So let's jump into some of those questions.
- 0:42I'm excited to talk about it. Welcome to Beyond the Facade
- 0:47podcast. I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and
- 0:50I'm thrilled to have you join me in the space today.
- 0:52What we're going to be doing is diving deep into the trials and
- 0:55triumphs and truths of seeking authenticity.
- 0:58Becoming your true self isn't about a single action or a
- 1:00moment. It's a relentless pursuit, a
- 1:03commitment to self that reveals the rich connection and meaning
- 1:06that our life has to offer. So whether this is your first
- 1:09time tuning in or you're a regular listener, know this.
- 1:12What you're building here goes beyond a conversation.
- 1:15You're here to challenge, to change, and to celebrate the
- 1:18incredible journey of becoming your authentic self.
- 1:21Because when you dare to show up fully, the rewards are
- 1:23immeasurable. So welcome to Beyond the Facade.
- 1:26Let's get started. All right, so let's just give a
- 1:30quick recap of the episode #46 so feel free to pause and jump
- 1:35back to that episode. Skim through in a little bit
- 1:38just so you can catch up because a lot of the details are going
- 1:40to be in there. So I don't know if you'd
- 1:41necessarily be lost if you didn't hear it, if you didn't
- 1:45listen to that episode, but it might be helpful.
- 1:47I don't know. You guys can decide.
- 1:49OK. So the episode was called The
- 1:51Neuroscience of Sexual Response from noticing to obsession.
- 1:55So we explored how the brain responds to sexual things, to
- 1:59sexual stimuli through 6 distinct stages.
- 2:03So let me just briefly touch on those.
- 2:05So stage #1 stimulus slash perception.
- 2:09So this is where the brain automatically notices someone.
- 2:12OK, Stage 2, awareness and acknowledgement, This is where
- 2:16you, where your conscious mind weighs in.
- 2:19OK, we become conscious of that automatic response.
- 2:23Then you have stage 3, which is interesting engagement.
- 2:25This is where dopamine starts to kick in.
- 2:27All right, This is the reward system starts to activate.
- 2:30Then you have fantasy, which is where imagination and
- 2:34storytelling, this is where it starts to happen.
- 2:37Then stage #5 which is fixation. This is where the patterns
- 2:41become when we use the word habits, which is where it starts
- 2:44to get ingrained into our brain. All right.
- 2:47Then you have stage 6, which is acting out.
- 2:49This is where the behavior overrides the consequences.
- 2:53This is where we are going to have the dopamine reward system
- 2:57get hijacked. And So what we want to just
- 3:00highlight in this episode is noticing isn't a failure, but
- 3:04what happens next is where recovery is really going to
- 3:08begin or it's going to break down.
- 3:09OK, so now we can get into the questions that were asked.
- 3:12And just, I guess a big thanks for the for the questions that
- 3:14you guys engage us with because we're going to go any direction
- 3:17that you want to go. Just whenever you pose the
- 3:20question, we can get to what you want to talk about.
- 3:24OK so first question that was asked was how quickly can
- 3:30someone go through the 1st 4 stages from noticing to fantasy?
- 3:35OK so that's a good question. How fast does this happen?
- 3:38Honestly, it can happen in seconds, moments, stages, one
- 3:43through 4, noticing the fantasy. So for someone with a history of
- 3:47like compulsive behavior, these pathways, they're often like
- 3:51they're so well rehearsed. The brain is trained to move so
- 3:56fast from a visual trigger into internal fantasy, so before the
- 4:02conscious mind even realizes what's happening.
- 4:06So stage one, this is automatic. It's just how your brain filters
- 4:10sensory input. Stage #2 is where we become more
- 4:15aware of what we saw. Stage #3 is when dopamine starts
- 4:19whispering that like the hey, this feels good.
- 4:22And stage 4 is when that default mode network takes over and it
- 4:26pulls in memory and the imagination and the desire.
- 4:30But here's the hopeful part, right?
- 4:32With practice, we can slow this down South.
- 4:34Mindfulness, breath, body awareness, Those are the tools
- 4:40that are going to strengthen our brains ability to pause and
- 4:42choose a different response. So if we just notice that like
- 4:47stage one on four can happen in moments.
- 4:50But once I'll refer to the men that I work with, once the men
- 4:55that I work with start to notice what's happening inside their
- 4:58body and not shame themselves for it, they develop greater
- 5:03awareness. So these stages, one through 4
- 5:05slow down and they start to be able to disrupt the pattern.
- 5:09Let's go to their second question.
- 5:11OK, The second question was where does the 3 second rule fit
- 5:16into the model? So the three second rule, which
- 5:21many men are taught early in recovery, it goes like this.
- 5:25All right, so first notice someone that you felt pull
- 5:29towards attracted to, and then look away and shift the focus.
- 5:34And then third, ground yourself. And you can do that many
- 5:37different ways. Ground yourself through prayer
- 5:39for affirmation, reminding of your values.
- 5:42So the thing I want to highlight is is when we just notice, like
- 5:46if all we do is just pull in the three second rule and go, I just
- 5:50need to balance my eyes. I just want to look away that
- 5:53this 3 second rule can be a really triggering conversation
- 5:56for a partner, for a betrayed partner.
- 5:58It's like, wow, you're just going to get your fix for three
- 5:59seconds. You're just going to use that to
- 6:01take in everything that you can see.
- 6:03That's not what the three second rule is designed for.
- 6:06It's not a solution to the problem.
- 6:08It's not it, it's not the tool that fixes things, right?
- 6:12It's made to create awareness so that 3 second rule is happening
- 6:17between stages 1 and 2. That's the moment after
- 6:22automatic noticing and just before your brain starts to
- 6:25evaluate and attach and create a mental loop.
- 6:28This is where the prefrontal cortex gets a chance to speak up
- 6:33and bring awareness and redirect the attention and reconnect to
- 6:37values. All right, so rather than just
- 6:39feeding the fantasy or sliding towards obsession, that 3 second
- 6:43rule is going to give you a window to choose like that
- 6:46groundedness so you can choose not leaning that compulsive
- 6:50behavior. So this isn't going to be about
- 6:52pretending like you didn't notice somebody.
- 6:54It's about like what you do with that moment.
- 6:57And there's so much shame tied into this because it's like I
- 7:01don't want to notice somebody and a big part of it is because
- 7:04I don't want to have a conversation later with my
- 7:06partner about the pain. But we're just going to try to
- 7:10not create shame in that experience of what is the actual
- 7:143 second rule for what is the model all about.
- 7:16We're going to take a quick break for a moment.
- 7:20I want to let you know of some things that we have coming up at
- 7:22Choose Recovery Services. Are you a woman carrying trauma
- 7:26in your body? Tension, discomfort, and that

- 8:23notes to learn more and to register.
- 8:26Let's get back to our episode. So the third question, Is it OK
- 8:31to acknowledge that someone is attractive?
- 8:35OK, This one when I got the question, like so many emotions
- 8:38because I'm like, oh, this is such an important question and
- 8:43so heavy, so many triggers around this dialogue, right?
- 8:48Because I kind of hate the word attractive because there's like
- 8:52definition to the word attractive.
- 8:53Like what do you mean when you say attractive?
- 8:56What does attractive mean to you?
- 8:57Because I think there's a level of attractive that matters.
- 9:01OK, I have notes here that I always follow along with.
- 9:04I'm going to get off my notes here for a second.
- 9:06I think about the way if we give it textbook, which is not fair.
- 9:11The difference between a woman's brain and a man's brain.
- 9:14A man's brain, he's queued up by visual stimuli, visually see it.
- 9:20Women, it can often be again, more textbook.
- 9:24It's more of emotional, right? It's like sex.
- 9:28It's like I've heard before, I want to be touched and talked
- 9:30into sex. That's when my body's going to
- 9:32respond with talk and connection.
- 9:36Or men, it's like see, and then there's the visual, then there's
- 9:40arousal. So it's different, so
- 9:42attractive. The word itself can be different
- 9:45for both people because of visual versus emotional, right?
- 9:50So when we hear somebody say, is it OK to acknowledge that
- 9:52someone is attractive, we kind of start off by going like,
- 9:56wait, let's define attractive. We're talking about emotionally
- 9:59drawn and tied to them or visually visual stimulation.
- 10:04Hopefully that made sense. Got off my notes a little bit
- 10:06there. So first of all, I'm just going
- 10:08to say it. Yes, let's normalize this
- 10:11attraction. That is not the problem, OK?
- 10:14It's part of being human. What matters is what we do with
- 10:18that awareness. Now, I hope I've held onto you
- 10:20through that saying that I hope that if you're the betrayed
- 10:24partner with all the hurt that's just tied into what I said, I
- 10:27hope there's a hanging on to this part.
- 10:30So let me just say that again, let's normalize that Attraction
- 10:35is not the problem. It's that's a part of being
- 10:39human, which is our bodies being able to respond to what it's
- 10:44aware, but we have a responsibility to do something
- 10:46with it. So this is what we would call a
- 10:48stage two response. Stage 2 is awareness and
- 10:51acknowledgement. So you noticed, you named and
- 10:54you didn't feed it, right? So if you say I noticed, I
- 10:59acknowledge that I moved on. That's not failure, that's self
- 11:02regulation. OK, Now I think I kind of want
- 11:06to just say the word that gets in the way is attraction,
- 11:09because I can feel like a deep level of being drawn towards
- 11:13somebody rather than the word noticing.
- 11:15OK, so I'm going to stop talking about that part.
- 11:17So again, that's not failure, that's self regulation.
- 11:20There's some strength in that. There's some recovery in that.
- 11:23Where it gets risky is when that acknowledgement turns into like
- 11:26a narrative. All right, So that narrative
- 11:28turns into fantasy. And I think for so often and
- 11:31betrayed partners, I wish you were here and you could just
- 11:33tell me how it is for you instead of me sounding like I'm
- 11:37putting something on you, that this is your experience.
- 11:39But the narrative turning into the fantasy, this is often where
- 11:42I hear the betrayed partners thinks that it begins.
- 11:45It just starts with fantasy, but it can go fast, right?
- 11:49But depending on where the guy's at in his recovery or the person
- 11:51is in their recovery. But if you're staying anchored
- 11:55and if you're breathing this thing out, you're able to return
- 11:58to your values. And that's the brain doing his
- 12:00job. And it's something the recovery
- 12:02consists of. What I love about what the
- 12:05listener's message is, is about curiosity.
- 12:08So they weren't just asking for a role, they were asking to
- 12:12understand. And so just want to acknowledge
- 12:14that listener. So thank you so much for that
- 12:16language that can help you talk about this in your relationship.
- 12:20Because I recognize you guys are tackling something so hard.
- 12:23And I hope that I hope that when the process is being driven here
- 12:29from understanding his sexual response, he's the person that's
- 12:33showing up in your world, helping provide openness and
- 12:38clarity about that. Oh my goodness, that's so many
- 12:40triggers. Because if he's not feels like
- 12:42goodness. So you know, if you're if you're
- 12:44listening and you're the person who did the betraying,
- 12:46understand your sexual response so you can be able to share with
- 12:49your partner and what it looks like when they're ready.
- 12:52Don't just put it on. They're going to be able to
- 12:54advocate for themselves the appropriate timing of that.
- 12:57But I recognize a lot of partners are like, just give me
- 12:59the truth. Just let me know what it looks
- 13:01like. Stop protecting me from pain.
- 13:04So, so hey, just maybe an invitation or just the value of
- 13:08these questions. Have you got questions like
- 13:09these if you're wondering about attraction fantasy or how your
- 13:13brain reacts to something? And if you're open to sharing
- 13:16your question, just anonymously paraphrase it.
- 13:19Just let us know the theme. We're open to like wrestling
- 13:23with that on this podcast. And also I'm often bringing in
- 13:27listeners that have the betrayed perspective because they've been
- 13:31betrayed and we get their expertise and perspective.
- 13:34So anyway, it's good to spend time with you.
- 13:38Thanks for the engagement. Looking forward to talk to you
- 13:40next time. See ya.
- 13:44Hey, thanks for joining us today.
- 13:46If this is something that you connected with, I'd love to meet
- 13:49with you more and talk about it. So what you can do is go to
- 13:51chooserecoveryservices.com or check the show notes.
- 13:55And there what we can do is set up a quick conversation.
- 13:58Thanks so much for listening to Beyond the Facade where we
- 14:00unmask the authentic self.
