- 2:28And I want to say something for all the fans out there.
- 2:31I've been dealing with kidney stones.
- 2:33I've been dealing with other things when it comes to my body.
- 2:37So all weekend long I've been waiting to come on the show and
- 2:41tell everybody because everybody's been reaching out to
- 2:44me on social media and asking me how do I feel what's going on?
- 2:47So I, I, I will tell you this, over the last three weeks, I've
- 2:52been dealing with all these different situations, different
- 2:56bacteria sicknesses, I've been on antibiotics, I've been on
- 2:59everything. So it's crazy that I'm here, but
- 3:03I'm, I'm going to tell you I'll be in and out of the show at
- 3:05some point today because I could be in the bathroom.
- 3:08Just letting you guys know. My stomach isn't doing so well,
- 3:11but I'm here and I'm I'm going to be entertaining you guys as
- 3:14much as I possibly can tonight, as long as I'm not thinking
- 3:19about the colonoscopy I'm going to have tomorrow.
- 3:21But anyways, First things first, we got to get into the UConn and
- 3:24Duke game because that game was incredible.
- 3:28Yukon defeated Duke in the Elite 8 thriller 7372 to advance to
- 3:34their third Final Four appearance in four years.
- 3:37Freshman Braylon Mullins who was zero for four from three until
- 3:42that moment where he hit that 35 foot jumper just 0.4 seconds
- 3:48left to win the game for the Huskies.
- 3:51With under 10 seconds left and Duke leading by two, Kaden
- 3:56Boozer committed a bad turnover directly leading to Mullins game
- 4:00winner. UConn started the game a
- 4:03miserable one for 18 from three, but were four for their last
- 4:09five including Mullins Game winner entering the game #1
- 4:13Seeds were a perfect 134 and 0 in the NCAA tournament when
- 4:19leading by 15 plus points at halftime.
- 4:22Duke LED 44 to 29. This also marks the second
- 4:26straight season Duke has been knocked out after holding a
- 4:30massive lead following last year's Final Four collapse
- 4:34against Houston. With the win, Yukon advances to
- 4:37face the number three seed Illinois in the Final Four,
- 4:41looking to become the first team since 1970s UCLA dynasty to win
- 4:47three titles in four years. For all the Yukon fans, you
- 4:53should be excited. You should be very excited, and
- 4:56there's a lot of reasons why you should be excited, but not
- 4:59because of the three-point shot and what Mullins did at the end
- 5:02of the game. Because this is a freshman kid
- 5:04from Indiana didn't play very well in the elite Lead 8 game
- 5:08against Duke. As a matter of fact, he started
- 5:10off very, very slow. He didn't hit a three until the
- 5:13final shot of the game. I'm not going to blame Kaden
- 5:16Boozer because I know everybody all over social media, all the
- 5:20Duke fans are attacking him. He cried when he was interviewed
- 5:23by the media after the game. And you feel for the kid.
- 5:26You really do. You feel for the kid.
- 5:29And Kaden could go back and play one more year with Duke and
- 5:32maybe next year wins the national title.
- 5:35Who does? The fact here is this is the
- 5:40final time we're going to see Cam Boozer in a Duke uniform.
- 5:44And Cam Booster did not hideaway from how he felt after the game.
- 5:51He believed there were championship team Proctor might
- 5:56be going into this year's draft. This is a kid that had a very
- 5:59good Final Four, very good tournament last year, came back
- 6:03to win a national championship with this team, fell short
- 6:06again. And Duke to me was built to win
- 6:12this year. They had enough to win a
- 6:15national championship even with the injuries they had.
- 6:20They belonged. They belong in the Elite 8 and
- 6:24the Final Four. But there were a lot of
- 6:27questions going into this game and really was the battle of the
- 6:32coaches, John Shire versus Danny Hurley.
- 6:36And if I'm going to bet on a coach, I'm going to bet on Danny
- 6:38Hurley because he's done it twice in the last five years.
- 6:43John Shire last year fell short in the Final four against
- 6:49Houston, bombed it with two minutes left up by almost 12 or
- 6:5413 points, choked the team choked, they couldn't get the
- 6:57ball in. And Houston, who's not an
- 7:02offensive team, was shooting threes all over the court.
- 7:05Just absolutely, I'll play them the last 5-6 minutes of the
- 7:09second-half. And Duke lost and regulation
- 7:15going into this game, could this team keep an early lead and up
- 7:23by 15 after the first half, you would have thought Duke was
- 7:26going to run away with this game.
- 7:29Duke learned, Shire learned from the mistakes that they made last
- 7:33year against a Houston team that everybody believed they were
- 7:37better than Cooper. Flag was on his way to be the
- 7:40number one pick and everybody thought that team last year was
- 7:46good enough to win a championship, to win a national
- 7:48championship. And what did Duke do at the end
- 7:51of the season? They extended John Shire to a
- 7:55five year deal. He's one of the highest paid
- 7:59coaches right now in college basketball.
- 8:03Now, I'm not taking shots at John Shire.
- 8:04This isn't all John Shire's fault, but you call it time out.
- 8:12You know you're up by two, you know you're up by two, and you
- 8:19know the only way that Yukon can win the game is by three.
- 8:24There's there's no way Yukon wins the game unless you throw
- 8:27the ball away. And what I would say to my team
- 8:31when I'm on the sidelines because you called your final
- 8:33time out is boys, hold on to the ball, get the ball, get it
- 8:38across the court, hold on to the ball, let them foul you.
- 8:42You win the game. There is no way UConn wins the
- 8:46game because then you're putting somebody on the line.
- 8:49He's shooting 2. He's probably hit one of them
- 8:51and that's a four. That's that's more than enough
- 8:53in my eyes that they're going to be chucking up at 3:00.
- 8:56There's no way they're getting the ball in with 0.3 seconds and
- 8:59scoring a three-point. I just, I can't see it.
- 9:04But you gave Mullins and UConn 4 1/2 seconds to set up and get
- 9:12that shot off. And that in college basketball
- 9:15is an eternity. It's an eternity.
- 9:21And I don't know if I believe Danny Hurley believed that that
- 9:25was, it was even possible for UConn to come back after what we
- 9:29have seen throughout this game. But UConn fought and they fought
- 9:34and they fought and they fought right back into the game.
- 9:40And there wasn't like when, when you look at the team and you
- 9:43look at the comparable pieces that UConn had going into this
- 9:47game, nothing really stuck out. Nobody besides Reed had a good
- 9:52game for UConn. Ball didn't have a good game.
- 9:57Demari didn't have a good game. Caravan didn't have a good game.
- 10:05None of them had good games except Reed.
- 10:08Reed had 26 points and 9 rebounds, so they even their
- 10:13bench. If you look at Uconn's bench,
- 10:16nobody. Besides, how do you pronounce
- 10:18his name? Rebe?
- 10:19He's the only one that scored two points.
- 10:22Oh, I'm sorry, Smith did too. Smith had nine points, so they
- 10:25had two guys on their whole bench that scored.
- 10:30That's it. And it when you usually see
- 10:34something like this and Yukon's known to use their bench, Danny
- 10:37Hurley is known to use everybody on his bench, but he stuck with
- 10:42his his top five and he believed in these guys, obviously
- 10:47believed in these guys. And when you look at it, and
- 10:50Pitino said it best, when you trust a player, it doesn't
- 10:54matter if they're O for 9, O for 10, you're going to trust the
- 10:58ball in that guy's hands. And I don't know if it was drawn
- 11:02up or it was even thought of when the time out came around.
- 11:05If they steal, if we steal the ball, put it in Mullins hands.
- 11:08I don't know if Danny Hurley planned that, but boy, oh boy,
- 11:14did he look smart. And Danny Hurley was jumping on
- 11:19the sidelines when Mullins hit that three and as as well as he
- 11:23should, because I don't know if he really believed that it was
- 11:27possible for them to come back the way they were playing in the
- 11:30first half. They played horribly.
- 11:33There was nothing that stood out to me when it came to the Duke
- 11:36Blue Devils that they were going to lose that game.
- 11:40Nothing. And Boozer had a sensational
- 11:43game. Boozer played 38 minutes, 27
- 11:47points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists. He had two blocks.
- 11:52He had his best game on the tournament.
- 11:56You want your superstar to stand out in the biggest games.
- 12:00Cooper flag in the final four-game besides the elite, the
- 12:04elite Gay 8 game, he looked the best.
- 12:06But even in the final four-game, he played well.
- 12:11You want your superstar player to stand out and Katie Booster
- 12:16had the second best game for the Duke Blue Devils.
- 12:19He had 15 points. He probably had his best game in
- 12:23the tournament, but I believe he was too confident and he rushed
- 12:29the pass. He wasn't looking around.
- 12:32There were other guys around him that he could have gotten the
- 12:34ball to. All he had to, honestly, all he
- 12:36had to do was move the ball across the half court line and
- 12:40they win the game and he was right there.
- 12:42He's like 5 feet away from that. Why are you throwing the ball
- 12:46away? Why are you forcing the ball in
- 12:48places that you aren't comfortable doing?
- 12:52And that has something to do with coaching.
- 12:55If you want to blame some things on Shire, that was the thing you
- 12:59blame. Because when you call a time
- 13:02out, you had your final time out, you're telling your point
- 13:06guard who's on the court, make sure, make sure you get the ball
- 13:10across the line. Don't force the ball.
- 13:13Don't put yourself in harm's way where you're giving them 4 to 5
- 13:16seconds to get that ball off. Because at any given day, one of
- 13:21those guys shoot at three, he can go in.
- 13:24We've seen it. March Madness is the craziest
- 13:25thing. We've seen how many crazy
- 13:27things. Illinois did it, Iowa did it.
- 13:34There are other teams throughout the tournament that hit
- 13:37unbelievable shots at the tail in the game, either to take it
- 13:39overtime or win the game. This always happens.
- 13:43That's what's so fantastic to watch.
- 13:45When you watch March Madness, you're excited because you don't
- 13:49know what to expect. A one could beat a 16.
- 13:52A2 can lose against a 13. We've seen this before, and it's
- 14:01not like Uconn's a bad team. They were number two seed.
- 14:06Duke had to know that. Danny Hurley.
- 14:10For all the mysterious, crazy things that we've seen Danny
- 14:13Hurley do on and off the court, he had his team ready for this
- 14:18game. He had his team ready to commit
- 14:23if they fell behind in this game to push forward.
- 14:27And that's, that's to me, the value of a champion.
- 14:31The one thing you could say about a champion is you never
- 14:34say die. Everybody attacks the New
- 14:38England Patriots years and years ago against Atlanta.
- 14:43They were down by what was it, 25?
- 14:4528 to 3, Yep, 25 points. It was, I think halfway through
- 14:48the third quarter. 25 points going into practically the
- 14:52fourth quarter they were up the Atlanta was up 3 touchdowns.
- 14:57The chances of the Patriots coming back in that game was
- 15:01like 99.1%. There was no chance in hell for
- 15:07the Patriots to come back in that game and a lot of crazy
- 15:11things happened. Atlanta's defense was not
- 15:14playing up the par like they were doing in the 1st 3/4.
- 15:18Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and New England's defense and
- 15:24running game never said die. And even though I believe that
- 15:30game was rigged, I've said that many, many times.
- 15:35That's what you think and that's what you see as a fan of sports,
- 15:39the value of a champion. Champions find a way to win
- 15:44those games. Even if you're down by 20,
- 15:46you're down by 15, down by 5 with one minute left, you are
- 15:52not going to quit. And Danny Hurley is not one of
- 15:55those guys that quits. I know all about Danny Hurley.
- 15:59Hurley, in his career, even as a basketball player, he played for
- 16:04Providence. He was not a good college
- 16:08basketball player. As a matter of fact, his brother
- 16:12Bobby was a sensational 1. Danny was never going to play
- 16:16NBA basketball. Bobby was drafted, got into a
- 16:20car accident, never flourished as an NBA player.
- 16:25I know because I'm a Bobby Hurley fan.
- 16:27But I knew the family and their father, who was an elite high
- 16:33school coach in New Jersey, found a way to keep a basketball
- 16:38program open because they had no money.
- 16:42A private school that couldn't keep it open.
- 16:44The only thing that kept that school open was their basketball
- 16:46program. That says a lot about the Hurley
- 16:50family. All three of these guys found a
- 16:56way. Bobby Hurley won two national
- 16:58championships with the Duke Blue Devils.
- 17:04Danny Hurley has already won two national championships with
- 17:08UConn and their father won 2829 state championships.
- 17:17They're from a winning family. And when you go against a family
- 17:25of talented, smart athletes or professional coaches, and I'm
- 17:33not, I don't know what Bobby Hurley is as a as a NCAA coach.
- 17:37I don't know what he is because he never went to a good program.
- 17:39And until he gets to a program that can recruit the right
- 17:42players, we'll never know what Bobby Hurley is as a head coach.
- 17:45But we know what Danny Hurley is.
- 17:48Danny Hurley is a winner, a born winner.
- 17:50Nobody's going to take that away from him anymore.
- 17:53This guy took three teams to the Final Four in four years.
- 18:00How many coaches in NCAA history has done that?
- 18:04I'm going to tell you, probably not more than a handful, maybe
- 18:08not even that much. I don't even know what the
- 18:11statistic is, but it's it's it's not easy to do something like
- 18:15that. And it says a lot about their
- 18:16coach. It says a lot about what that
- 18:19regime has done for U Conn basketball.
- 18:23Remember, he took over for a coach that won a national
- 18:26championship. And then again, when you talk
- 18:31about all the different things that Yukon and the trials and
- 18:36tribulations that Yukon had to go through after last year, if
- 18:40we remember what happened to last year and Yukon, Yukon,
- 18:43Yukon lost early in the tournament, I think it was the
- 18:46Sweet 16. Round of 32 against Florida and
- 18:49Hurley came out. We talked about it.
- 18:50He was venting at the refs. So it was the round of 32 after
- 18:56that Danny Hurley after the game, I remember what he said.
- 18:59He blamed the refs and he said we'll be back next year.
- 19:02And then 60 minutes after the tournament interviewed Danny
- 19:07Hurley in his basement, his his little man cave.
- 19:11And I remember it. And they asked him what is what
- 19:14is the value of success? And Danny Hurley said, wait,
- 19:19that's the only word of success. If you don't win, there is no
- 19:24success and this man has found a way.
- 19:27John Shire, who has had some of the best recruiting classes in
- 19:32the last three years, has not bought a win.
- 19:36He hasn't even played in the national championship.
- 19:39Think about it. He has two guys right now in the
- 19:43NBA fighting for rookie of the year.
- 19:44One that's broke the rookie 3 point shot, 3 point field goal
- 19:49percentage in his first year as a rookie.
- 19:52And the other one who's a superstar on the Dallas
- 19:54Mavericks, who's going to be the face of United States
- 19:57basketball. Think about that.
- 20:01Let that, let that clear your, your whole thought on what John
- 20:06Shire is as a head coach. And I went back and forth with
- 20:09the JJ Redick thing. And I again, I'm not blaming
- 20:12this all on John Shire, but guess somebody's got to take
- 20:15responsibility. Somebody's got to because Cam
- 20:18Boozer is heading off to the NBA draft.
- 20:22You're going to get another top end or not top 2 recruits next
- 20:26year. When is it going to be enough
- 20:28for Duke? When is it going to be enough
- 20:30for the program to understand this?
- 20:31Like, this guy's not a winner. He's not a born winner.
- 20:36Look, it took North Carolina a couple of years to realize that
- 20:41Hubert Davis is not the guy. We all knew that he wasn't the
- 20:44guy. I don't think anybody's
- 20:48blindsided. Didn't understand what the Duke
- 20:51blood of a stand for college basketball coach K the Dookies.
- 20:58I know that Tommy is a Duke fan. I'm a Duke fan.
- 21:02I didn't expect Duke to win this game.
- 21:04But going up 15 points and a half, there was no way UConn
- 21:07comes back in this game. Not the way Cambusa was playing,
- 21:11not the way the team was playing defensively.
- 21:13Not not the way UConn couldn't put a bucket in the net for 5
- 21:17minutes in the at the tail end of the the first half.
- 21:24They looked horrible. Forster came back with a what
- 21:29was it, a broken foot? Foot fracture?
- 21:30Yeah, He was never supposed to come back at all.
- 21:33And he played for 14 minutes in this game, no points.
- 21:37He played a big part of them in the Sweet 16, moving on to the
- 21:42Elite 8. Why wasn't he used as much as he
- 21:45should have been used in this game?
- 21:47And I'm not taking shots at Kaden, but you saw throughout
- 21:49this tournament when Kaden had too much of the ball, commanded
- 21:53too much of the ball. He made mistakes.
- 21:55Forster is your veteran. This might be his final year
- 22:00playing college ball. I think it is his final year
- 22:03playing college ball. I would trust more in my veteran
- 22:07than a rookie who has not had enough time on the basketball
- 22:11court or season because of the Dukes depth.
- 22:16The Dukies. I was about to say the Dukies,
- 22:19but the fact here is U Conn is going to move on and a lot of
- 22:25people looking at Mullins and they're giving him a lot of
- 22:27credit. And Mullins, he's got a nice
- 22:29smile. He's a nice kid.
- 22:30I know I we were talking to Mike V, our manager throughout our
- 22:34our meetings yesterday and he says, oh, he's a prominent first
- 22:38round draft pick. I don't know about that.
- 22:42I think he plays another year in college basketball, gives
- 22:45himself a little bit more time under Danny Hurley before he
- 22:48decides to go into an NBA draft. But he didn't stand out in this
- 22:54tournament. Mullins did not.
- 22:57He's a freshman. He's not.
- 22:58He's nice to watch. He he's got a great shot.
- 23:01He's an Indiana alum. He's a high school champion,
- 23:04state champion in Indiana. You know, there's great
- 23:07basketball to be played in Indiana.
- 23:08Everybody knows that's Indiana basketball is everything.
- 23:14But he didn't have a great game. Nobody on this UConn team had a
- 23:19great game. Nobody except Reed.
- 23:24So what does it tell me about the Duke Blue Devils going into
- 23:29the offseason now? Well, it tells me two things. 1
- 23:35John Shire has one more year to prove himself to win a national
- 23:38championship, or at least get this team in a national
- 23:41championship. That's one, and he's got 2
- 23:44recruits, one that's I think #2 in the world #2 in the country,
- 23:49coming out of college, coming out of high school, he's heading
- 23:52into to play for Duke. And I think they have the number
- 23:544 for prospect that's going to Duke next year.
- 23:59So you have two and four coming to this roster.
- 24:01And this team that's still fully loaded, still has a loaded team.
- 24:06So if Shire doesn't get this team into the finals next year,
- 24:11he has to be fired. You can't put talent after
- 24:15talent after talent and fall short.
- 24:18Look at Kentucky. John Calipari for years had the
- 24:21best recruiting classes and he won a national championship or
- 24:25two in Kentucky, and he found a way to get these guys to come
- 24:28and play in Kentucky. I don't know.
- 24:30At the time there was no NIL deal, so who knows if they were
- 24:33paying them under the table. We all know what happened in
- 24:35Memphis. We know the whole Derrick Rose
- 24:38thing after the fact that he was drafted by Chicago.
- 24:42Everybody knows that story. Who do you think was behind
- 24:44that? John Calipari.
- 24:48Why do you think John Calipari parted ways with Kentucky and
- 24:52Kentucky parted ways with him? Because the time was ready.
- 24:58It was ready to move on. There was no there was no more
- 25:02Calipari in Kentucky. Calipari realized that it was
- 25:05time to move on. That's why he went to Arkansas,
- 25:08that's why he took that contract, and that's why he
- 25:10moved on. And I'm not saying John Shire is
- 25:13at that level yet because John Calipari won national
- 25:17championships before that and he did it with different teams.
- 25:23My thought here is John Shire has one more year.
- 25:29The director over there at Duke for Duke basketball has one more
- 25:35year. If this team cannot get in to a
- 25:38national championship, there's no way this team keeps this
- 25:43coaching staff, this director and move forward in the future
- 25:52with this team. I, I just, there's nothing here
- 25:54that tells me that I'm excited about the Duke Blue Devils next
- 25:57year. I don't trust John Shire.
- 25:59I told everybody about John Shire.
- 26:01I never respected the fact that Coach Gay, out of all the guys
- 26:05he could have picked, all the guys he picked John Shire.
- 26:08Why? Because John Shire has been
- 26:10licking his ass for the last five years on the sidelines,
- 26:13kissing his rear end, going to practices and calling the
- 26:16offense. What is it?
- 26:18Because John Shire's face is going to be a meme for the rest
- 26:22of the year. Did anybody see his face?
- 26:25When Mullins hit that three pointer, it was more than
- 26:29shocked. It was like, oh man, I got to go
- 26:32and take a dump. I, I'm, I probably crap myself.
- 26:36I'm I better? I better be wearing my diaper
- 26:38tonight. Flabbergasted.
- 26:40He was absolutely shocked that that went in.
- 26:44That was almost a half court shot.
- 26:46It was 5 feet away from it. It was unbelievable.
- 26:50And it wasn't just like it banged off a rim and it tapped
- 26:53in. Remember the Halliburton shot
- 26:54when he beat the Knicks when it jumped off the rim up and it
- 26:57fell right in and everybody was like shocked and it went to
- 27:00overtime. Remember that it wasn't.
- 27:02Like that? It was a swish that went right
- 27:05in. Mullins look like he was.
- 27:09He was shocked himself. It was like I don't know what he
- 27:12was thinking. I I don't know what to say after
- 27:14that shot went in, but I can tell you what Kaden Boozer was
- 27:17thinking. Why did I do that?
- 27:20I just cost my brother and my team a national championship
- 27:24because they were on their way. There's no way they lose against
- 27:26Illinois. There's no way Duke loses
- 27:29against Illinois. No way.
- 27:31There's no way. Now they go to a national
- 27:34championship. John Shire looks like he's a
- 27:36genius. Maybe they lose if they lose
- 27:38against Arizona or they lose against Michigan.
- 27:41Who knows, But at least they get to that national championship,
- 27:44what John Shire has been fighting for for the last couple
- 27:46of years now. There's no national
- 27:50championship. John Shire is going to be back
- 27:52to the drawing board. Duke is going to be back to the
- 27:55drawing board. They're going to be wondering
- 27:56what do we need to do? What did we do wrong?
- 27:59Why did this happen? It's always why, why, why, why,
- 28:02why and what John Shire said at the end of the game makes no
- 28:06sense. It doesn't.
- 28:09None of it does. I know there's a lot of people
- 28:13that stand for what they believe.
- 28:16And he says, well, you know, we practice this every single
- 28:19practice. We practice this every single
- 28:22time we're out there and we're practicing these particular
- 28:26situations. Well, if you practice it, the
- 28:29first thing you're telling the player is don't throw the ball
- 28:33away. Hold on to the ball, let them
- 28:35foul you. There's 4 seconds or five at
- 28:39the, I don't remember how much, 5 seconds left of the game.
- 28:42Don't throw the ball away, get it across.
- 28:45They had a chance. Kaden had one guy to beat.
- 28:48All he had to do is walk right past that line 5 feet away from
- 28:52him. The game's over.
- 28:54They foul him. He it's one of those free
- 28:56throws. There's no way they shoot a
- 28:58three. There's no way they're going to
- 28:59be able to shoot a half court. They would have to force the
- 29:01ball like Kate, like Duke had to do at the end of the game.
- 29:04There was no way that was going to happen.
- 29:08Stats and statistical tell you there's no chance.
- 29:11But when you see 4.6 seconds left and they have a chance to
- 29:15set up, there's a very good chance if you get the ball in
- 29:18the right guy's hand and in the position to get that ball off,
- 29:22there's a good chance that ball can go in.
- 29:25And it did. And boy, oh boy, that shot is
- 29:28going to be a remembered not just in UConn history, in Elite
- 29:328 history for many, many years to come.
- 29:35Yep, you mentioned it. Like you, Dan Hurley is one of
- 29:37those coaches that are never going to have a guy quit
- 29:39whatsoever and they trusted in starting lineup.
- 29:42You mentioned the very lack of bench points outside of Malachi
- 29:44Smith that is kind of considered a six man.
- 29:46He's kind of a French starter anyway.
- 29:47But they trusted those guys to just play tight, play smart and
- 29:52still trust in their identity. They didn't shoot threes all
- 29:54game. They still tried to shoot threes
- 29:56and hope they got back into it. They kept missing free throws.
- 29:58They were beating themselves in a lot of ways for a while, but
- 30:00they stayed resilient on defense.
- 30:02They stayed resilient in terms of getting to the foul line and
- 30:04it allowed them to get back into this game.
- 30:06And obviously they know that they've been vulnerable to
- 30:09press. I was even saying because I
- 30:10watched the Duke St. Johns with you, I was saying for
- 30:12a while that the way Rick Pitino was pressing was a lot of the
- 30:16same issues that they had against Houston and Calvin
- 30:18Sampson and that defense and Tino was doing it throughout the
- 30:21game a lot of the time there. And I was saying Hurley should
- 30:23adopt that same identity At the start of the second-half.
- 30:25You're down by 15 points. You're not getting anything from
- 30:28threes. Try to get some transition
- 30:29baskets off steals with the defense.
- 30:31I was saying they should have pressed for a while, played a
- 30:33Bob Huggins West Virginia type identity where he would press
- 30:35the whole game because John Shire, as evident though last
- 30:38year does not know how to have his team set up good inbound
- 30:41plays. And obviously Kaden Boozer throw
- 30:43the ball away. Now Boozer could have done two
- 30:45different things. I think one of which is just
- 30:46threw it a little earlier when he had more space.
- 30:48I thought maybe if he threw it a second earlier I think he would
- 30:51have gotten it off fine Either way.
- 30:52The other thing you can do is just dribble back further and
- 30:55then try to push it to a teammate.
- 30:57Is it me, and I want to say this to all the fans out there, is it
- 31:01me that watching this tournament, every single one of
- 31:04these teams had problems shooting free throws throughout
- 31:06the tournament. Every game that I watched, every
- 31:09game I watched that some of these elite teams had problems
- 31:12shooting free throws. St.
- 31:13John's against Duke had problems at the tail end of the game
- 31:17shooting free throws. And that's the problem.
- 31:19It's the easiest shot that could cost you.
- 31:22And remember with these games are so close, it's 1234 points,
- 31:27whatever it is. And I don't know what Vegas had
- 31:30the what was it? What was the over on this game?
- 31:33What was that 160? 51156 I believe .5 because I
- 31:37know Paulo said he had a friend that was betting on it.
- 31:40So 156.5 or whatever it was, I mean, think about it, there's
- 31:45something to be said about what Vegas knows before going into
- 31:49this game and I and most of the time they're 68% right.
- 31:54So you're betting on it. You're probably throwing the
- 31:56money away if you're betting against it.
- 31:58If you bet for it, you're not making much money on it.
- 32:01And that's the thing about college sports.
- 32:04And everybody says when you watch college football and you
- 32:07compare college, college basketball is probably the
- 32:09hardest sport to bet on because you don't know what's going to
- 32:12happen with the last two minutes, 3 minutes of the game.
- 32:15Because we've seen crazier things, especially against Duke,
- 32:19especially against the Duke Blue Devils.
- 32:22They just can't buy a win when they're up big money.
- 32:26And I say big money because usually when you're up 15
- 32:29points, that's that's pretty much everything.
- 32:31You could believe that this team is going to the Final Four.
- 32:34You can bet all the money going in.
- 32:36I thought after the half there is no way UConn comes back in
- 32:40this game. No way.
- 32:42There's no way can I? Not the way Duke was.
- 32:43Playing can I present you this one with I with two coaches that
- 32:46I know you don't like? Is John Shire the anti Kyle
- 32:49Shanahan? Is Duke get too conservative
- 32:52late in the game? Because a lot of the Duke fans
- 32:54when I posted your article on Reddit was saying that I don't
- 32:57think that Duke keeps their foot on the gas a lot of the time
- 32:59either trying to get more foul shots because it's not like they
- 33:01were shooting the free throws badly like they were in the
- 33:04first game with St. John's.
- 33:05I just don't think they were getting enough opportunities and
- 33:07they were trusting too much of that secondary scoring that just
- 33:10wasn't there. Forcing too much on Caleb Foster
- 33:12where he's still kind of playing her.
- 33:14Kaden Booze is like you were saying, maybe was making some
- 33:16bad decisions with the ball. I just think they were trying to
- 33:19like think they were just too content with a 10 point lead or
- 33:21A7 point lead all the time. John Shire over the last couple
- 33:26of years and especially in the tournament, even against North
- 33:29Carolina this year in the regular season, we have seen
- 33:33John Shire play it safe. Coach K has never played it
- 33:37safe. If you ever watch Coach K coach,
- 33:40especially in the tournament, he made sure he ride or died with
- 33:44his his defense. He's going to put pressure, he's
- 33:47going to press on you. He's going to get the ball and
- 33:49he's going to get the ball in the in his best players hands.
- 33:51He did that with Christian Leitner in the 90s.
- 33:54He did that moving forward with all the different guys, Jason
- 33:57Williams, all the guys that we've seen in the past, JJ
- 34:00Redick, all these guys that were great players playing college
- 34:04basketball. He made sure that he put them in
- 34:06the right position and got the ball to them as quick as he
- 34:09possibly can so they can get a good shot off.
- 34:12With John Shire, I just think he just plays everything safe.
- 34:15Everything that he does, even when he speaks to the media,
- 34:19it's like he doesn't know what to say and when he says it, it's
- 34:22awkward. Everything that he says, it's
- 34:24just awkward. Did anybody watch the press
- 34:26conference after the game? I mean, I feel bad for Cam
- 34:30Booster because there was a lot of memes and a lot of different
- 34:32things that were posting up on TikTok of him beating up Shire.
- 34:35I mean, something people made some jokes about it.
- 34:38He punched out Shire and that was that was a little.
- 34:42A little crazy for you? Too extreme.
- 34:44Yeah, but Cam Boozer, he his eye, he has a black, black and
- 34:48blue eye. His eye was practically shut.
- 34:50He got, I think it was in the first half when he got hit in
- 34:53the face and and he he played hard all game.
- 34:58After that, there was nothing. You can't blame Cam Boozer for
- 35:01not showing up. Everybody said that Cam Boozer
- 35:03throughout this tournament has hurt himself in this draft.
- 35:07I don't think so because after that game Cam Boozer showed why
- 35:11he's a top three draft pick. Cam Boozer showed why you can
- 35:15rely on him in a big game when you need him to score big shots.
- 35:1810 for 21/1 for 4/3 point line, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks.
- 35:26He played as well as you possibly can in an Elite 8 game
- 35:30to get your team in the Final Four.
- 35:31Yeah, and you mentioned the secondary scoring being an issue
- 35:34for Duke. It was also an issue for UConn,
- 35:36and they never adjusted to try to take away Reed at any point
- 35:40to extend the offensive rebounds as well.
- 35:42UConn was getting a lot of extra possessions that way as well,
- 35:45where that still will add up overtime.
- 35:47As much as they were missing threes, they were still able to
- 35:49nod back. It wasn't like a natural.
- 35:51All right, One huge run got UConn back in the game.
- 35:53It went from 15 to pretty steadily 10 for a while and
- 35:56pretty steadily 7. And it was like for a while
- 35:58UConn was not able to get past seven.
- 36:00But eventually it was going to break if they just made either
- 36:03one stupid mistake, which there were a couple bad turnovers
- 36:05before that too, or they were missing the free throws.
- 36:07Duke had a couple of times I missed the second-half of the
- 36:09one on ones with the free throws.
- 36:10But again, I don't think that was as big of an issue as it
- 36:13was, was just the inbounding plays, which if you're John
- 36:16Shire, that's gonna be the first thing in in next year's camp to
- 36:19start a just practice inbounding plays, for the love of God.
- 36:21So, Quinton. Couples.
- 36:23Thank you. Bring me in.
- 36:24Quinton Couples was sending me text messages.
- 36:28I was in the hospital when this all was going on.
- 36:31I was in the hospital, I was not doing very well.
- 36:34I I'm dealing with kidney stones and all Quentin Colpo's can tell
- 36:37me is there goes your bracket, there goes your bracket.
- 36:43And I said, well, I still got UConn moving on, he said.
- 36:46And it went back and forth. Quentin likes the competition.
- 36:49I like the competition too. And I don't care who wins this
- 36:53bracket because it's all luck, but.
- 36:56He personally. He personally.
- 36:58It is locked. Are you going to tell me?
- 37:00Are you going to tell me that the bracket is in luck?
- 37:03No. Get out of.
- 37:04Here you got to have a mindset beggars to get a 68% right, but
- 37:08we don't have no idea. Make it make sense.
- 37:10Quentin, how far is U of UNC going?
- 37:13No I didn't. That's that's what I'm saying
- 37:15mindset wise. I knew they weren't going to go
- 37:17very far. I told y'all that was like they
- 37:20put. Out in the first round.
- 37:22Yeah. So it's just, you know, winners
- 37:23understand, certainly. Winners Winners Duke was.
- 37:28That's what it is. Duke was what, like 4 seconds
- 37:31away from winning and winning? And you ready to fire the coach
- 37:34and at least 8. That's what I'm not
- 37:35understanding so. They should, but they're not
- 37:38going to for. What they just gave him ext 5
- 37:40years. I know that's what makes me
- 37:42even. More survive in my 3.
- 37:45Do you think I want to see Duke go on next year with John Shire
- 37:49after what I've seen the last two seasons?
- 37:51It doesn't matter. It's going to be the same
- 37:53result. You got a #1 recruiting class
- 37:55coming in again. Because I still won't learn how
- 37:57to practice their inbound place. Guess what's going to happen
- 37:59again next year? The same thing.
- 38:01No matter what coach is on the side.
- 38:02That's just what's going to happen.
- 38:04They're not. They're not they they're only
- 38:05good for regular season success and high draft picks.
- 38:11That's what they do. Hold on one second.
- 38:13Wait a second, Duke wins national championships?
- 38:17What do you, what do you speak? What is it?
- 38:19Wait, wait a second. Years, first of all.
- 38:21It doesn't matter. They win national.
- 38:22Championship How many does? North Carolina win.
- 38:25I mean, N yeah, they. Just won, yeah.
- 38:28They won two years. Two years more recently than
- 38:30Duke. Yes, they won one.
- 38:32They won one. Yeah, that's a lot.
- 38:34And after that, before that, what did they win?
- 38:37Who? Your North Carolina Tar Heels,
- 38:39what did they win after that? That was Roy Williams leading
- 38:42and that was like 10. Years for that history, Lane
- 38:44Who's Who's leading in national titles?
- 38:47What are you talking about? Hey.
- 38:48They're both the same. They're both the same.
- 38:50Five, I'm pretty sure. Y'all got five?
- 38:51Yes, I think we got SIS. Yeah, well, I think you.
- 38:54Need to OK, all right, some of that wine and champagne, are we,
- 38:58are we losing that too or are we winning that?
- 39:00What are you win and go? Losing what?
- 39:01Are you talking about Yeah, we winning?
- 39:03What do you? Want.
- 39:03What are you talking about? Head to head venture.
- 39:06Head to head matchup. That rival, we've been so even
- 39:09forever, it's, it's crazy how statistically even it is.
- 39:11I think you might be ahead now, but it's not not by much.
- 39:14It's not by much. Listen, listen, I just want you
- 39:17to just tell me what it is. I don't want to know if it's
- 39:20even if it's close. Microscopic.
- 39:22Sample wait a. Second, wait a second, wait a
- 39:24second. Wait.
- 39:25A second, wait a second, wait a second.
- 39:28So I am going to help you out. So you're telling me because
- 39:31North Carolina has what, two or three more wins against Duke in
- 39:36a lifetime of basketball that makes North Carolina a better
- 39:40program? Is that what you're?
- 39:41That's what you're talking about is.
- 39:43That what you're thinking, how many it takes to win?
- 39:45What do you mean? How many does it take to win?
- 39:46What are you What are you talking about?
- 39:48Win anything, Bets anything, Games anything.
- 39:52What are you talking? How many?
- 39:53How many does it take? Does it take 1-2 or three?
- 39:56How many does it take? What?
- 39:57What are you trying to get to? I don't what are you getting?
- 40:00At you're better if you're ahead.
- 40:02So if you're winning, the more. If you win it the most you're
- 40:05hit, you're better, you're better program.
- 40:07Oh, you're better. That's what it is.
- 40:08That's what. It is.
- 40:09That's what it is. That's why we have ratings.
- 40:10All right, So the Yankees won 27 World Series, all right?
- 40:14But the Red Sox have won more championships in the last past
- 40:1815 years than the Yankees. Does that make the Yankees a
- 40:20better organization in the last 15 years?
- 40:23Yes or no? No, it doesn't.
- 40:25No, it doesn't. No it doesn't.
- 40:29OK, historically better franchise?
- 40:30Maybe. I would say the Yankees are
- 40:32probably better than the Red Sox right now.
- 40:35That's not what I'm saying. It's not what I'm.
- 40:37Speaking, it's a more respected franchise historically.
- 40:39It's not even. Close.
- 40:40That's not what I'm speaking about.
- 40:42I'm talking about success. In the last 15 years, who's more
- 40:45successful, the Yankees or the Red Sox?
- 40:47All right, the Red Sox. So to me, in the last 15 years,
- 40:51who's been a better franchise? The Red Sox.
- 40:53The Red Sox. That's I'm a Yankee fan, I'm not
- 40:56going to hide behind. It and the college basketball
- 40:58analogy to this is comparing UCLA is the most championships
- 41:02of all time but they haven't won one I think since the 80s and
- 41:05UConn is won 6 championships on their the chance for seven and
- 41:10they've all done it since 99. It's the same logic.
- 41:12No, what I'm saying is you can't refer to history and then ignore
- 41:16a part of history. That's my thing.
- 41:18I'm not You can't to defend your argument.
- 41:20You can't slide it to 15 years versus the overall.
- 41:24So overall, says one team. And then you go to, Oh no, let's
- 41:27go to the last 10 years, the last 15 years, and let's use
- 41:30that history instead of the last 100 years.
- 41:32So let's go back. So let's go back.
- 41:35Let's go back to history because you like to look at history, all
- 41:38right? How many teams were in the major
- 41:40leagues in the 50s? You're history, buddy, you know
- 41:43how to tell me. How many teams were there
- 41:45Speedy? It was most of the National
- 41:47League, not a lot of the. Americans How many teams?
- 41:49Speedy, I believe. I want to say it was 20.
- 41:52It was less than that, OK, less than that in the 40s and the
- 41:5650s. So, well, now we're looking. 16
- 41:59Errol 16 in the 1950s. 16 all right, so 60, so there, so real.
- 42:04And there was no wild card. There was none of that.
- 42:07It was if you get you're the best team in the American
- 42:09League, you're the best in the National League, you're playing
- 42:11in the World Series. That's how it worked.
- 42:13There was no rounds, there was no divisional, there's no the
- 42:16LALCSNLCS, there was none of that.
- 42:19OK, now let's come to now. Now what do you have to do to
- 42:22win a Major League championship? What do you have to do to to get
- 42:27to a World Series? You got to go through three
- 42:29rounds to get to a World Series and then play in A7 game Series
- 42:33A a brutal 7 game series. That's what I'm saying.
- 42:36And that's what you can't compare errors, but you can
- 42:39compare the last 15 to 20 years. You can.
- 42:43You can. And if you would ask me right
- 42:45now who has been more successful in the last 20 years, the Duke
- 42:50Blue Devils or North Carolina Tar Heels, I'm going to say
- 42:53Duke. I am going to say the Duke Blue
- 42:55Devils. That's my argument.
- 42:57Based on success wins, the lost totals, talent.
- 43:02You laugh, but it's true. I looked it up.
- 43:06UNC's won one more title, six to five over Duke, and they've won
- 43:11three titles more recently than Dukes won three titles, but it's
- 43:16close. A small win because national
- 43:20champion, but you when you're not getting this.
- 43:22But that's the argument here. When you're going to a
- 43:25tournament, it's all about luck. You know you don't get it.
- 43:28It is. It is you.
- 43:30Can't just one off skiing? It's luck Errol, don't you think
- 43:34though? Like a good a well coached team,
- 43:37they would know that if there's only 10 seconds left on the
- 43:40clock, it's a 10 second. I am not saying I'm not.
- 43:43You know what I mean. I'm not saying John Shire is a
- 43:46good coach. I have taken shots at John Shire
- 43:49on the show a million times. I can't stand him.
- 43:52He's a terrible head coach. So if that's what you're trying
- 43:54to throw at me, he's at the, I'm talking about when you look at
- 43:58when you're watching the tournament, you're watching the
- 44:00bracket and you're betting on the bracket.
- 44:02The I wrote a story about it, the chances that your bracket is
- 44:06100% flawless. It is very slim.
- 44:11It's it's, it's your guess against mine.
- 44:13That's what it is. There's not a chance in hell.
- 44:16And, and usually there might be one or two guys in the whole
- 44:19world that has the perfect bracket.
- 44:21And when you look at these teams, they're so evenly
- 44:24matched, even when you look at yes, they are.
- 44:27Yes, they are. When you look at them, they are,
- 44:30man, there's a lot of them. Yes, a three seed is very much
- 44:35you can match up against an 8 seed.
- 44:36Well, no one matches up with Arizona, I mean.
- 44:40Yeah, you keep saying. Even even match.
- 44:43Well, I mean, we got a few of those games to talk about,
- 44:45Errol. There's other guys going to face
- 44:47UConn in this Final Four. My here's the facts, guys, and
- 44:50we will get into that in just one second.
- 44:52I, I want to finish, finish what I have to say here because this
- 44:54is what really bust my bubble. And I, I understand what Q likes
- 44:58to do. He likes to get onto my skin.
- 45:00He likes to argue and I like to do.
- 45:03Is it really because when you're watching, when you're watching
- 45:06the national championship, like when you watch hockey, watch the
- 45:09NHL playoffs, you could predict who the best teams are.
- 45:13You can predict right now going into the playoffs who are the
- 45:16best teams right now in hockey. Three best teams in the Central
- 45:19Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota. OK, and who's the best in East
- 45:22Tampa? Who's the best in East?
- 45:24The three teams, the best team Carolina, Buffalo, Buffalo.
- 45:27OK, I'm going to predict here that one of those three teams in
- 45:31the West and one of those three teams in the East is going to be
- 45:34in the finals. Predict it.
- 45:35You want to put it on. I will put whatever you want on
- 45:39it. I will put whatever you want on
- 45:41it. But here's the.
- 45:42Thing. Here's the thing, I I'm just
- 45:44saying I'm, I'm giving you, I don't know.
- 45:47I got to, I got to look at it. I got to see how who's healthy.
- 45:50I mean, the playoffs haven't started yet, so I'm not going to
- 45:52sit here and tell you who's going to win.
- 45:54My argument here is when you put two and two together and you
- 45:57understand how it it works, you will understand why I'm saying
- 46:01that the NCAA Tournament, March Madness, it's all about luck.
- 46:05It's all about luck. It really is.
- 46:08It's all about luck. Because anybody would have
- 46:12thought watching Pitino go against John Shire and they were
- 46:17up by 1 going into the second-half, especially they
- 46:20were up at 1.9 points against Duke in the second-half that
- 46:25they were going to pull away because Pitino's just that much
- 46:27better of a coach than John Shire.
- 46:29But what happened who came back made their shots.
- 46:33Campers are hit important free throws and they beat the
- 46:37Johnnies at the end of the game. So what I'm trying to say here
- 46:42is if you're going to predict things and you're going to point
- 46:44things out, the one thing you cannot predict, you cannot point
- 46:47out and I'll say it again is predicting what's going to go on
- 46:51in this in the in March Madness and what's going to happen when
- 46:55it comes to Arizona and Michigan and now Illinois.
- 46:59And even though Illinois is not matched up very well against
- 47:03UConn, I wouldn't be surprised if Illinois beats UConn if they
- 47:07come out strong and they shoot the ball the way they've been
- 47:09shooting in this tournament. I'm just saying here that's all
- 47:11my argument. Because you said everybody's
- 47:13evenly matched, so that would only make sense.
- 47:15I would say right now, yeah. Utah State is just as good as
- 47:18Arizona. I would say right now when you
- 47:20look at what these teams have done so far in this tournament
- 47:23and you can see that you can credit these teams on what
- 47:26they've done, that I believe that all these teams are evenly
- 47:29matched, all of them. Even what we've seen berries is
- 47:32done in the tournament and Arizona is done and, and, and
- 47:35what they did against Purdue in the second-half, which was
- 47:37shocking. I would say that because Purdue
- 47:40looked like they were running away with the game.
- 47:42They were up by 7 or 6 going into the second-half.
- 47:45They had a great game plan and they choked.
- 47:48They couldn't hit a lick in the 1st 5 minutes of the second-half
- 47:51and then Arizona took over and, and they started scoring and
- 47:55then they played catch up. And when you play catch up
- 47:58against Arizona, you don't have a lead against them and you
- 48:01can't defend against their top two players.
- 48:04And they've had and and Purdue had problems doing that and
- 48:07hitting shots in the second-half, especially last 10
- 48:09minutes of the game. There was no way they were
- 48:10winning that game. Thank you to all the fans,
