- 2:20hopefully all the sounds better.
- 2:21You've probably heard that too.
- 2:22Open up my diet Mountain Dew.
- 2:23'cause I am a fiend for it.
- 2:25So you gotta have kind of one vice, right?
- 2:26So it's Diet Mountain Dew for me.
- 2:28So anyways, today's episode.
- 2:30I had a different idea in mind for what I was gonna record for this week's
- 2:34episode I was gonna get into about warranties and stuff like that and what
- 2:38she looked doing, even though I don't really get in too much of the newer
- 2:40stuff, but I was gonna kind of talk about that and also maintenance and stuff.
- 2:43But there was a post that someone I know stating the fact is that they
- 2:48were going to be a judge this weekend at the Hillsborough Concord, which.
- 2:52Quin say, enough, I'm headed there today.
- 2:55So this post was put on there and he was talking about, I was
- 2:57being a judge of the Concord.
- 2:58He was judging the Ferrari class.
- 3:00There's a nice amount of Ferraris in this class.
- 3:02'cause I'm actually going there myself to be a docent.
- 3:05I don't think I'm judging, I don't like to be a judge.
- 3:08'cause that's a lot of responsibility put on your shoulders and we'll
- 3:11get into that as to exactly why.
- 3:14So this verse made the post and it kind of like struck a nerve with
- 3:17me and now it against this person.
- 3:19Just in how the judging works in general at these CONCOR events.
- 3:24Now, when you get into more prestigious ones, pebble Beach, Caino, stuff like
- 3:31that, you know, they get very particular credential wise and background wise, or
- 3:35who they're gonna bring out as a judge.
- 3:37Now these guys do, they're volunteers straight up.
- 3:39They don't get paid.
- 3:40They get in an event for free.
- 3:41That's about it.
- 3:42Maybe some free food free beverages.
- 3:44That's about it.
- 3:45So it's not like the wheels are getting greased and saying, Hey,
- 3:48vote for these cars or whatnot.
- 3:50You know, that kind of gig.
- 3:51Not to say that some money hasn't been tried to slip into a judge's hand at an
- 3:55event, but, well, that's a whole different argument, but it's a volunteer position.
- 3:59That's basically what it boils down to.
- 4:00You gotta pay your own way.
- 4:01So if either you're driving hour, two hours, or you're flying
- 4:04across country, it's your dime.
- 4:06So it just depends on how you want, how you get there.
- 4:08But anyways, when you get some of these other events, I don't wanna say you're
- 4:11scraping the bottom of the barrel.
- 4:12That's not right because all these people that are participating, you know,
- 4:14have knowledge and background, but to what extent is what I'm getting at, so.
- 4:19This individual, they've only been in this industry maybe four or five
- 4:22years, so their background knowledge, especially of Ferraris, is very
- 4:25limited, and the only reason is working for one of the big auction houses.
- 4:30That's how he jumped into this industry.
- 4:31He started working for the auction house, whatever, but he hadn't been in the right
- 4:33place, right time, and be involved in the transaction of a very particular car.
- 4:38All of a sudden got him a load of notoriety.
- 4:40Good for him, Hey, got his bank account fluffed up, everything
- 4:43like that, which is fantastic.
- 4:44Good for him.
- 4:45Hey, kudos.
- 4:46So again, this isn't about him.
- 4:48This is not about his situ. Had nothing to do with him, kudos
- 4:52to him, everything like that.
- 4:53Hey, he's taking the fast track and having a great time and you
- 4:56know, doing a lot of cool shit.
- 4:57It just has to do with when you have a car at a Concord event,
- 5:01depending on the level of event.
- 5:02You know, a lot of these owners take that trophy placing what have you, you know,
- 5:07and that's value to that car because then when you go to sell that car, you can
- 5:10say, oh, my car wanted X, Y, Z or came first in class at X, Y, Z, or whatever.
- 5:16It adds a lot of value to that car.
- 5:18'cause you have a lot of people that when they buy these cars, 'cause you
- 5:20know they wanna do stuff with it.
- 5:22And there's a very, very small amount of people that they take these, they daily
- 5:26dry 'em or dry 'em on a regular basis and.
- 5:28Drive 'em, like they should use 'em for basic stuff and everything like
- 5:31that, and have a lot of fun with them.
- 5:32You know, we got a lot of guys, hey, it's a weekend car.
- 5:34They only take 'em to car shows.
- 5:35They take 'em to events, you know, take 'em to concourse.
- 5:37Stuff like that.
- 5:38You know, they pride theirselves on having a car that's award-winning or as
- 5:41with Catalina Platinum Award winning.
- 5:43'cause that adds a sh ton, a ton of value to the car, especially
- 5:48for Cavallo and Ferrari.
- 5:49Porsche has the same thing in getting those type of awards and it boils down to.
- 5:53Because a lot of these things, it has to come down to like
- 5:56a point, point and a half.
- 5:57Caino, was it 96 or higher?
- 5:5995 and higher.
- 6:00It's a hundred point scale, you know, so you have a cheat sheet and so to speak
- 6:04in regards to what you're looking for.
- 6:05There's a lot of basic stuff, but there's a lot of stuff on
- 6:08there If you really don't know.
- 6:09You could really ding a car, you know, looking at hex head bolts compared to
- 6:14regular, you know, whatcha youma call bolts Phillips and blah blah blah.
- 6:17That kind of stuff.
- 6:18Or the hose clamp is wrong or wrong.
- 6:19Oil filter, stuff like that.
- 6:21I mean, 'cause if you don't know your stuff, you could take a point off, half
- 6:24a point off thinking, oh that's wrong.
- 6:26But it could be, right?
- 6:27I mean, that's the thing.
- 6:28Do you know.
- 6:29Now when they're judging at events, it's not like there's
- 6:31one person go around to one car.
- 6:33Usually you have a group.
- 6:34I mean, that's how you should do it.
- 6:35Now, I've seen events and been events where you have, they had one
- 6:37judge going around or two judges.
- 6:39That was it.
- 6:40That again, that has to do with getting volunteers and people be able to come,
- 6:43you know, it's, uh, all about that.
- 6:44But normally you have four or five, six judges in a group.
- 6:47They go around collectively from car to car.
- 6:49They have a specific amount of cars.
- 6:51They'll know ahead of time, these are the cars you're judging.
- 6:53So hopefully these people did their homework and brushed up on the
- 6:57cars they're gonna be looking at, you know, and how in depth they
- 6:59get into that, that's up to them.
- 7:01Now, normally you also have one judge in that panel.
- 7:03That group, hey, they're the expert, they'll know their stuff.
- 7:06So you can lean on them in regards to questions and everything like that.
- 7:10And I highly recommend if you have time and you're interested in it,
- 7:13follow a group of judges around.
- 7:15At the next big event you're at.
- 7:17You don't have to follow 'em the whole time, dude.
- 7:18'cause it takes a few hours for 'em to go around 'cause they do multiple cars.
- 7:21But watch 'em do a few cars and see if they do.
- 7:23It's pretty much the same in regards to every car.
- 7:26'cause they have to check, Hey, check this, check the horn, check brake
- 7:28lights, blah, blah, blah, da da da.
- 7:30It's interesting to see how they kind of tweak a little
- 7:32bit from car to car, you know?
- 7:33So it all kind of depends what they're getting at.
- 7:36And especially if a judge goes, oh, I love this car.
- 7:38This is one of my favorites.
- 7:39You know, blah, blah, all that kind of stuff.
- 7:40So.
- 7:41I recommend it 'cause it's cool to just kind of stand in the background,
- 7:44watch them work and see what they do.
- 7:46So now we have this group of judges.
- 7:48Now you normally you have, okay, the owner of the car or whoever the handler
- 7:51is, they're talking, normally they'll talk to one of the judges predominantly
- 7:56and kind of that's the judge asking all question, well, the other judges
- 7:58either talking to other people or they're just kinda looking at stuff
- 8:01on the car or everything like that.
- 8:03You know, they might have two judges where the guy's talking to,
- 8:05but it's pretty much one person.
- 8:06And I usually, that's the, I wanna say the go-to person in that group.
- 8:10Or like I said, you know, you could have the owner and the, the Restore
- 8:12or whatever the store's talking to the judges while the owner's talking
- 8:15to the other judges just shooting the shit, you know, that kind of stuff.
- 8:18So it all depends, but you have to turn in your score sheets
- 8:22and get rated on your car.
- 8:24So at the end, they're tallying up the points, they're tallying
- 8:26everything up and kind of showing you, okay, here's where you're at.
- 8:29You can go back after the fact and ask for verification.
- 8:33Say, Hey, you know, this doesn't seem right.
- 8:35No, this is right.
- 8:36But here's the problem is it's after the fact.
- 8:39So it's not during the event itself where, okay, well they're gonna all
- 8:43of a sudden reshuffle everything.
- 8:44They won't, they'll rescore your card.
- 8:46You might think, well, what's the point?
- 8:48If there's a big difference between being a platinum and not a platinum
- 8:53for like Ferrari and stuff like that.
- 8:54I mean it's huge.
- 8:55And like I said, when you're talking to point half point, that goes a long way.
- 8:58'cause when you check out listings and stuff for nicer, higher end collector
- 9:02Ferraris, not your newer stuff, but you know the older stuff and look at it
- 9:05and you'll guarantee, if you say, oh, platinum award-winning, blah, blah, blah.
- 9:09I mean, that's huge because it just shows that it was restored correctly.
- 9:12It's almost as is is coming outta the factory.
- 9:14It's using NOS parts, all that kinda stuff, you know?
- 9:17I mean, that's cool.
- 9:17It just adds a ton of value to the car if you have that.
- 9:21That's why you have a lot of these guys that have the money that they started
- 9:25sending over when Ferrari started doing their class East program, as they started
- 9:28sending them over to Italy, to Ferrari itself, to restore the cars because they
- 9:33wanna get the award, they wanna get the Platinum Award, they wanna win this event.
- 9:36It's a huge ego thing for a lot of these people.
- 9:39And on that note.
- 9:41Judges can have a tendency to get an ego on them because they feel that,
- 9:46hey, they're holding all the power.
- 9:47You know, it's kinda like when, um, go through T-S-A-T-S-A,
- 9:51rightfully so, I guess.
- 9:52I mean, they could make your fricking life and trip miserable if they really wanted
- 9:55to, if they're just having a bad day.
- 9:57I. You know, you're at the store and you got some schlep, you got some clerk
- 10:01that they feel like they got all the power in the world right now over you.
- 10:04'cause you everything's in their hands, you know?
- 10:06And it's like you gotta kowtow to them, everything like that.
- 10:08So people have a tendency to get a bit of an ego on them.
- 10:11But again, you know, not saying that they'd sabotage it, what have you,
- 10:14but what I'm saying is they'll start nitpicking and start deducting.
- 10:18Points for stuff that they're not completely certain about.
- 10:21Like I said, you know, I'm not saying this happens all the time.
- 10:24I'm not saying this is common.
- 10:25I'm just making a point of what potentially is there
- 10:29in regards to doing it.
- 10:30Because you know, it's not like they're going back and
- 10:32scrutinizing all this stuff.
- 10:33Normally someone's bringing their car and they have a relatively strong idea
- 10:38of where their car should score at.
- 10:40I feel it's a huge disservice to the owners when you have judges coming in that
- 10:45really have no business being a judge.
- 10:47Now, if they stand on facts, oh, it's celebrity judges, this and that, oh,
- 10:50this is a, you know, they have some knowledge and again and again they
- 10:52should, they can study up beforehand and you go to like, you know, pebble
- 10:56Beach, they have a lot of like extra.
- 10:57You know, drivers and stuff like that.
- 10:59Very well known people in the automotive world, being the group of judges
- 11:03that, 'cause I mean, if you think about like Pebble and stuff, they
- 11:05gotta have a hundred, 200 judges.
- 11:07I'm not exactly sure.
- 11:08They have a lot.
- 11:08So, and again, you volunteer everything like that, but it's a lot of fun.
- 11:12It's very enjoyable to do.
- 11:13Again, it's something I don't choose to do.
- 11:16I've been asked.
- 11:17A lot.
- 11:18And I just kinda, eh, you know, I, I kinda look at what the event is.
- 11:21Well, what is my role within that group?
- 11:23You know, what are you expecting from me?
- 11:25One, I don't like to be the main person.
- 11:27I just don't like to have that responsibility.
- 11:28'cause again, you know, you got some owners that can get pretty prickly about
- 11:32what kind of score they receive and demanding why and everything like that.
- 11:36I mean, I've seen an instance here or there where, you know, the
- 11:38owners got extremely pissed off.
- 11:40In regards to what their score was and why the hell is it this,
- 11:43that I just spent this much money getting this done, da da da.
- 11:46Then they go back onto the restore, what the hell's going on?
- 11:48Like, no, that's right.
- 11:49Like it can create a very, very sticky situation all around.
- 11:54But anyways, so kind of going back to what whole point of this was when you
- 11:58watch a judge agency, I said this all just basically started with the fact is, you
- 12:01know, it just kind of is a little bit of a, I don't wanna say sore point with me.
- 12:05I don't wanna say that.
- 12:06I wanna say it's, you know, just something that kind of irks me a
- 12:09bit and I think it's a disservice to a lot of the owners now.
- 12:12Like I, I don't know how you can fix it.
- 12:14I mean, there's really new, 'cause again, these guys volunteer, so it's
- 12:16like the event itself is kind of hamstrung in regards to, well, we
- 12:19gotta get who we can get because, you know, we're not paying these people.
- 12:22Then you might say, well, why don't they get judging just paying it?
- 12:24Well, the money's not there for it.
- 12:26All these events, a majority of them are about raising money for certain
- 12:30nonprofits, charities, stuff like that.
- 12:32They run his nonprofits.
- 12:33So people aren't really making money off these things.
- 12:35You know, bill Warner's always made the comment, people ask him all the time,
- 12:39well, I'm thinking about starting this conroy and this and that, and he tells
- 12:41'em, don't, don't, don't, don't do it.
- 12:43Don't do it.
- 12:43Don't, don't get, don't be getting in for make money on it.
- 12:45You're not making money on it.
- 12:46It's a lot of effort.
- 12:47It's a lot of work and it costs a lot of money.
- 12:49Stuff starts adding up.
- 12:50So I mean, those ves run on volunteers.
- 12:53You really can't go that route saying, well, you know, pay the judges then, you
- 12:57know, because it just wouldn't happen because then all of a sudden you could get
- 12:59into, well, they're getting paid so all of a sudden they're gonna have favoritism.
- 13:02That kind of stuff.
- 13:02I don't know, like, I don't wanna say it's a lose lose, but, and again, I
- 13:05gotta reiterate, I'm not saying this happens at every event and all, everybody
- 13:09just say, it just struck a nerve.
- 13:11When I saw that post, it made me just kinda like, ugh.
- 13:14It just brought something up to the surface that it, it bothers
- 13:17me for the owners of these cars.
- 13:18It's one thing when you have the guy that's got hundreds of millions
- 13:21of dollars in his bank account.
- 13:22Spending three, four, $5 million on a car, even, you know,
- 13:26a million dollars on a car.
- 13:27Then spend another couple hundred thousand dollars, if not a million
- 13:29dollars on the restoration.
- 13:31All this kind of stuff.
- 13:31And they get angry, but they're like, oh, okay, well next year
- 13:34we gotta fix this stuff and that.
- 13:35Then we'll get those last couple points, yada yada.
- 13:37It's the gentleman that.
- 13:39He's saved up.
- 13:40That's his only car, you know, that's his baby.
- 13:42He's had it for 30 years or 20 years, whatever it is.
- 13:45Or he got it.
- 13:46He restored it himself and everything like that.
- 13:48Super passionate.
- 13:49I love these people.
- 13:50I'm actually ado these people 'cause they're true backbone
- 13:53of the collector industry.
- 13:55Not saying these huge collectors don't care about their cars, but I'm saying
- 13:57the people that have one, maybe two cars, they're the passionate ones that,
- 14:00you know, I just wanna be sure they're not getting a disservice done to them in
- 14:03regards to their car and at these events.
- 14:06Again, it's just something I wanted to get off my chest.
- 14:09I guess basically you could say that's what this whole episode was.
- 14:11It's just about me venting about the situations and like I said, I,
- 14:14there's really no way to fix it.
- 14:16There's no way to correct it.
- 14:16And again, it's not like it's, you know, all over the place.
- 14:19It's, it isn't not saying any of this stuff.
- 14:22Could potentially happen.
- 14:23You know, just someone being rude and ego and I'm deducting
- 14:27points, I don't like this asshole.
- 14:28You know, that kind of stuff.
- 14:29Well, and you'd hope it wouldn't be, these people put a lot of time, effort,
- 14:33and money into these cars, you know, and they take pride in that when they go to
- 14:36these events or to getting judged and they bring it to these events 'cause they
- 14:39gotta pay to put their car in this event, depending on what event it is, you know.
- 14:43Get pretty expensive to have your car in the show to get judged
- 14:46and something happens that goes wrong, then they get pissed off.
- 14:49They'll never bring their car back to that show again or what have you.
- 14:51And as we know, I mean, we all love the weekends where there's events all over
- 14:55the place, big, small, what have you, various types of cars, from exotics
- 14:59to muscle cars, everything like that.
- 15:01You know, these shows are fantastic.
- 15:02You don't wanna see people get a bad taste in their mouth 'cause you wanna
- 15:04see these cars out in the public, out in the wild, especially getting driven
- 15:08and you know, everything like that.
- 15:09So, which is always great.
- 15:10What's cool is that get these more prestigious ones you like Pebbles,
- 15:14you know, they have that drive they do where you get extra points if you
- 15:17participate in that drive day before, two days before the Concor stuff.
- 15:22Like that's cool to see when you see these cars actually in motion
- 15:24getting driven, everything like that.
- 15:26That's what I love about the Sione Museum in Philadelphia.
- 15:29If you have never been there, I highly recommend you visit the Sione Museum.
- 15:32'cause they do events, I dunno often.
- 15:34I don't know if it's every weekend or what have you, but they take their
- 15:37cars out into their parking lot.
- 15:38They drive 'em around.
- 15:39I mean, it's not a very big parking lot, but you hear 'em driving, you
- 15:42hear 'em running, you know, they treat 'em as a cars as they should be.
- 15:44So, which is awesome.
- 15:45And kind of as a back note.
