In today's podcast episode of More Organized Less Clutter, I chat with Helen from Loving Space Solutions about what really lies beneath clutter and why those patterns keep repeating. Helen explains how emotional attachment, impulse buying, and difficulty letting go are at the heart of clutter issues. She also shares how deep rooted beliefs like regret or This is just who I am, and family messages and generational habits influence how you can hold on to things. She also shares how Psyche K is helping her clients to explore the subconscious beliefs. If you're ready to finally understand and break free from these clutter patterns, then stay tuned with Helen from Loving Space Solution. Let's jump into this more organized, less clutter conversation. Today on more organized, less clutter. I'm talking with Helen, the founder of Loving Space Solutions and authentic aligned well-being support. She helps people create calmer and more peaceful homes, but also she's looking at the root causes of clutter. Welcome, Helen. Now other problem is we can't actually see Helen, which is a bit frustrating at the moment, but we still can hear her. So speaker-1: Hi, thank you, Noel. Thank you so much for having me. speaker-0: That is fantastic. At least the people who are just listening will be able to s still hear everything that you're sharing. So if you were a Barbie doll, what two accessories would you come with? Just so we can get to know you a little bit more and things that you like to do outside of maybe organizing. Okay. speaker-1: I think one of the things I do enjoy so for I I've been a plant mum for the the last few years. So yeah, plants is something my friends know me for. I enjoy tending to them. I've not always to the best, I must admit, I've had a fatalities over the years, but yeah, I enjoy tending to my plants. I just enjoy having them in my home and ⁓ you know, the the vibe that they bring to my house. So yes so that speaker-0: They're mainly indoor plants or outdoor plants are a bit of indoor. Yes, I'm an indoor fan of that too. Yeah. And it's and it's hard because you can do a cutting and next minute you've got more and they just keep multiplying, don't you? speaker-1: Just Absolutely, especially Ivy. Like I've got so much ivy, I don't know what to do with it. Sometimes I just ignore it and just hope it'll go away. But Yeah. And I think the other thing would that I I'm quite known for is is is collecting flybys points. I get real into that, you know, especially when there's an offer, you know, I spend this amount and you know, for four weeks and yeah, I was lucky enough. I think I started maybe I think it was pre COVID. And that I started originally collecting them and just, you know, really use it as a bit of a game, I suppose, to see how many I col could collect. And then actually a couple of years ago I I had enough points to change into velocity points with with Virgin. I was able to get a flight to Madrid with them. Yeah. speaker-0: Wow. I remember because it's been around a really long time, like I would say thirty odd years it's been around. So when it first came out, I r remember going I got a flight, but it was just a interstate flight here in Australia. And then I remember they slightly changed how you could receive your points and stuff like that. And then it changed and I've never been near a flight ever again. But I had to get some headphones actually recently. with my points as well. Yeah. Yeah. So I do understand that obsession of the flybys. It's yeah. It is fun to get then something at the end. Have you ever looked into shop back? So that's another one speaker-1: Yeah, yes. And so I tend to I haven't looked into it like really methodically, but I definitely have used it. If I'm booking accommodation somewhere I'll do booking dot com 'cause they have quite a good percentage. So yeah, I've managed to get like a couple of hundred bucks back from that, which is always nice. Yeah, yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, and you actually get physical cash back from theirs as well, which is great. Yeah. So then if I was to work with you as a professional organizer where you live, is there an area in your home or your life that you would love someone else to help you organize? speaker-1: ⁓ my God. So this actually h this thought comes to me a couple of times and I do find it so amusing considering what we do. So one of the things is when I've if I if 'cause I take donations away as part of my service with ⁓ with people. ⁓ and then depending on what there is, it sometimes, especially if it's been a long day, sometimes I just want to get home and I'm just I'm hungry, I want to have lunch, etcetera. ⁓ or maybe I think, ⁓ you know, I'll I'll take the things out and I'll think, ⁓ I'll do that tomorrow. I'll speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Maybe things need sorting through. So, you know, 'cause maybe some will go to donations, maybe some will go to recycling. But then what tends to happen is other people's things and it end up in my garage. So I am now left with, ⁓ my God, I need to go and drop that up, but then that needs to go there and that needs to go there. And I find myself in this complete situation that our clients find themselves in. I gotta really do with someone to just help make this job just, you know, not monotonous. Just that part. But it's and it's so funny that it is like speaker-0: And I s I'm sure having that garage space or that shed space, yeah, I can see where whereas I don't have that. So mine is a front deck and my husband is constantly on my back about it. Where's that going? When's that leaving? 'Cause because you you're dropping them at different places. So I do completely hear you. But yeah, mine's on the front deck. So I actually see it all the time. So I have to deal with it weekly. But yes, it is like a pitfall of our our job, isn't it? Because you are trying to find homes for certain things and which means that not everything can go straight to an op shop. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And and sometimes I think, ⁓ well, you know, I'll do that tomorrow if I'm I'd like to think, ⁓ if I'm going down that area I'd like to be doing sometimes I'll try to put it all together and but yeah, it's yeah, it's funny, but yeah, it becomes like a halfway home for for donations and things. speaker-0: Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I know exactly. It's more those other like trickier things, isn't it, that are going like for us it's going to like the lost dog's home and there's some ⁓ towels and things like that that are sitting there for a couple of days until I'm going that direction. So yes, I completely understand that. Absolutely. Where and whereabouts are you based? speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. I'm in I'm in East Brisbane. So East Brisbane has it's it's just ⁓ next to ⁓ Kangaroo Point, so pretty central to Brisbane, like in a Brisbane. Yeah. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. But it is, it's like you're not gonna drive from one side of the town to the other side to drop one thing off. You're gonna save it until you're over in that area, isn't it? speaker-1: Absolutely, or at least have a few things to take all in one room. So Yeah. Yeah. So there's definitely a need to apply my own methods there. speaker-0: Yeah. So what strengths then do you bring to your business? And I mean, obviously your business is so unique because you actually do the physical decluttering, but now you're also doing the actual underlying subconscious things and looking at why people have clutter in their life. speaker-1: Yeah, so I suppose that that is a big differentiator for me is that I've done work on on subconscious beliefs and things and found a way to to incorporate that. So it's i yeah, I I don't really know of anybody else that that does it, there may be, but ⁓ yeah, it's that looking at the root cause, trying to figure out, you know, especially for those clients that we have where, you know, you can go and you can do the systems, etc., but then you know that when you you know, when you leave the house within a few weeks that The same the same situation's g gonna come back. So I think that's probably, you know, my a unique point for me that makes me different is that I have the ability to help people that are struggling with repeating patterns, you know, maybe they've got ⁓ I mean emotional attachment's obviously a big one for a lot of people, but you know, impulse buying or sh you know, struggling to let go of things or what have you. You know, if there's something deeper going on there, then I've got the ability to actually, you know, sit someone down and we can we can we can do that process. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, which is great. So what what what actually like was that just something that you saw, you know, those repeating things and went, ⁓ I've got to do something more about this? Like what drove you to then go and study some more to actually then, you know, input the site K into your business? speaker-1: It well, so yeah, it it all did kind of happen a bit organically. Now I I have been quite fascinated or I am quite fascinated with the subconscious human behaviour in general, just from my own like healing journey that I've been doing, like I do find it, you know, equally fascinating. ⁓ as well as, you know, obviously it can be, you know, if you're going through something, it's not always the that pleasant, but I do find the you know, understanding how humans operate, I find it all really fascinating. So I had an interest in that anyway, but then I suppose yeah, it w it was working with those clients that I felt I hadn't really helped them to the best I could. Where I'd go in and and obviously I always give my best. I'm always gonna do the best that I can, but there were just certain clients that I didn't feel that yeah, I was I was helping with the surface stuff, I was resetting everything, but I wasn't really helping with the with the actual underlying issue and you know, they're probably gonna, you know, end up, you know, with the same same cluster everywhere, same situation and then you know, spiraling and thinking that, you know, shaming themselves that it's something wrong with them, et cetera. ⁓ so yeah, so that was it. And then from just then learning about psyche through through a friend actually. My friend had a session. She travels a lot. She flies everywhere. But she had a real fear of flying. So obviously this was something that had impacted her for a very long time, no matter how many times she travelled. And she went and had one session. And after one session, she's been absolutely fine to travel ever since. I was like, ⁓ wow, okay, that's that's really interesting. So I spoke to the woman who facilitated her process because I do know her. And I asked her said, Would that work help someone who, you know, problems with clutter, maybe, you know, emotional attachment or impulse buying? And she said, Absolutely, it is it you can apply it to any arena of your life, really this worked. So that's how I got into it. And then I also wanted to, I suppose, try before try before you buy. I also had some sessions myself to help with my sleep. ⁓ because I thought it's one thing to try and offer this and to learn it, but to experience it for myself is going to be quite advantageous and obviously give me some insight, you know, to help those clients. So yeah, it took me a bit longer with the sleeve. ⁓ probably after about four sessions, I would say that it started to feel like real progress was being made. So yeah, so whilst my friend who was, you know, cured, quote unquote cured in one session, mine did take a little bit longer. So that was also good for my expectations to understand that maybe, you know, it isn't always gonna be just fixed straight away, you know, there might be several sessions that may be required. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. And I suppose with with organizing, you could do that session first and then do a bit of organizing and come back to it, can't you? speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. And so well part of it is because part of the process with Psyche K is I can go into that a little bit more, give a bit more of explanation, but it aligns the we're essentially we're upgrading the ⁓ a belief at the subconscious level, but then we put in what we call well, what I call aligned action. So we we're basically we're putting in a new programme to ride over a a limiting previous beliefs that we had. But then it's important to take the action towards that. So it kind of kick starts that new belief, if you will, rather than it just sitting there. So yeah, we would go through the subconscious belief work. We would do what we call balances and you know work on some conscious goal statements. And then after that, we would be able to physically apply that to the organizing session. So it would be the subconscious work and then the actual physical practical work after that to help, yeah, kick start that new belief system and for it to start taking place and become the new normal. speaker-0: Do you wanna talk a little bit more about it then? ⁓ about actually site K, yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. So so the simplest way I'll try to explain it is it's it's a gentle process that helps people upgrade subconscious beliefs that may be holding them back. It's through muscle testing, and through muscle testing we can communicate with the subconscious and identify beliefs that may be supporting or limiting what you know what we consciously want. Where the subconscious doesn't align with a conscious goal, we can update that belief through a series of simple processes which will be called balances. And that's just like through diff some different postures that we apply. And these balances help create what's known as a whole brain state. The idea is to encourage both hemispheres of the brain to work together. So the left and the right, supporting the integration of the new belief, which then, you know, by bringing together logical thinking and emotional processing. So rather than just relying more heavily on one or the other, yeah, brings both sides of the the hemisphere together. So Whilst we might be having a bit of a an emotional reaction to something, the logic can also come in and be the rational, okay, well, how can we move forward with this? You know, what steps can we do, the practical side. So Yeah. I know it's ⁓ quite a bit. If anybody has more questions, obviously they can reach out. But I would do recommend anyone, you know, looking into this if they're if it sounds like something that they could be interested in. speaker-0: Yeah, definitely. Like, you know, I can just think of clients straight up that I know that would actually really benefit from that. And so those particular clients I will only work with if they're already working with a psychologist or maybe an OT and you're supporting them. You're doing the physical side and they're maybe doing that emotional side. So it's great that you're able to do both, you know, yourself instead. So maybe give us some of the symptoms of the root causes of clutter. Like, yeah, what What ask maybe start with them. What are some of our examples of the symptoms of clutter that we see within our jobs? speaker-1: Yeah, of course, no worries. So I'll just try and keep to like some of the more obvious ones and and obviously just for people listening in. So these are just possible ⁓ possible beliefs and possible root causes. It doesn't mean that this is the reason for anybody to you know, it's everybody's individual and everyone will have their own beliefs and and root causes. But as an example, just to just to get people curious about what's going on there, I think even if people can just open their mind up to what's actually going on. So Like with the case of emotional attachment, let's start there. That's that's a big one that we we can all relate to. ⁓ so the symptom of that is that, you know, that someone can't seem to let go of something. ⁓ you know, maybe they feel upset or distressed, you know. They may have a possible belief that if they get rid of it, then they'll regret it. Maybe they've got a belief that they're maybe dishonouring the person that gave that to them. You know, it could be something like that. And and so something like that, there could be a possible root cause of that. There's a need for certainty and safety. You know, maybe they grew up with financial scarcity, you know, maybe they lost everything in a fire when they were younger. You know, they could they could be many different things. And also like with regards to letting go of things. Sometimes difficulty throwing things away. ⁓ you know, people hold on to things that maybe they don't use anymore, they've been sitting there or they've been holding on to things that, you know, belong to other people. They might have a belief that throwing things away is wasteful, which makes perfect sense, right? We can understand that one, but you know Sometimes, you know, a possible root cause could be that it's it's not even their belief in the first place. It's one that they've inherited from their parents. You know, I I'm I'm sure you've you've had yourself, you know, in the clients' houses where, you know, they say, ⁓ I can't get rid of that, my mum will kill me if I get rid of that. And it's like, okay, well, does she want to have it in her house then if she doesn't want to get rid of it? You know. ⁓ you know, so it's not necessarily that it's their belief, but it's what they've heard growing up, is that it is wasteful. And, you know, and again, their root, you know, their situation could be, you know, if you think about you know, people, you know 'cause of yeah, someone did tell me a beautiful story about how her grandmother, because they were children of the war, you know, so they were on rations. So you can understand that mindset, but then that gets passed down and and that's how it can, you know, translate into other different things of holding on to things and not being wasteful. Yeah. speaker-0: It's amazing, isn't it? That that generational thing, how it just goes on down the generations. And it's only if someone is aware that then it can be stopped. It can like, Okay, I I actually wanna change this situation. Otherwise I can see that this is gonna happen with my own children as well. Or already they can see that happening with their own children. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And I think if you if someone can just stop and go, ⁓ hang on a minute, this no, this is what I heard from my mum growing up. This this actually isn't my belief. Okay. And then there's at least a something a bit to to work on there, you know. And and then and the other one I that I think's really important to say is, you know, if someone has a symptom of, you know, a a cluttered house, for example, but they have a possible belief that this is who I am, you know, and I do hear that quite a bit, you know, ⁓ well, it's just it's always been this way, you know, I can't do anything about it, it's just who I am. And that you know, a root cause of that, you having that identity belief, then the environment's only gonna support that that belief. So then the clutter will keep returning because, you know, they're gonna recreate that reality for them because they have an identity that that's who they are. And as soon as you identify with something, yeah, you're you're not doing yourself any favors. So so with Psyche K, like we can look at like the low-hanging fruit. So for example, if I was to help a client who struggled to let things go, you know, we can do things like creating a positive goal, a conscious goal statement around I it's easy for me to let things go, for example. We can do that and set some practical action afterwards. But if they've got a belief that if I get rid of it, I'll regret it, well. Well, maybe we can look at something there. Can we do a conscious goal around, you know, I am safe to get rid of this item, you know, things like that. But then if we also get to the root cause of what was going on, you know, so if somebody, you know, has got a need for safety or they've got ⁓ you know, they grew up with financial scarcity, maybe we can do it do a conscious goal that supports that very root thing. So if we can do the root, then everything else will hopefully kind of dissipate quite easy because a lot of these things, like the symptoms, they are just a symptom of what's going on underneath. So they've been compensations and coping mechanisms and what have you. So if you can get to the root cause and maybe help someone understand that, you know, they well, this isn't my belief. Let's work on that. And then take actionable steps, you know, aligned action towards that new belief at the root cause, then, you they're gonna get much better results, a lot, you know, longer lasting, you know, and then however long that might take, you know, can vary. But they've got more of chance of yeah, changing that at the root level. Yeah. speaker-0: Definitely. And that and that's another reason why it's great to work with another person like a therapist or like in your situation yourself because you're actually looking at those root causes. You're not just going in, tidying up and then coming back the next week and sorting everything and then we're back in the same spot, aren't we? speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. No, absolutely, absolutely. And it's ⁓ you know, it's that analogy, you know, so if you imagine there's a smoke alarm going off, you know, it keeps going off, you could you could go and take the batches out of it, you know, or whatever, but ⁓ but the you know, the better way would be to discover where the fire is coming from in the first place. speaker-0: Yeah, yeah. ⁓ that's yeah, that's a great analogy. It's exactly that, isn't it? And I think that people don't realise that though too, and I'm not sure I'm sure you've heard it too, that they just say, ⁓ yeah, I'm just I'm a hoarder and it's like, hang on a second, the identity and yourself need to be separated, don't they? speaker-1: Absolutely, absolutely. Yeah. And it's it's so common and it's so easy to do, but yeah. ⁓ and I and also it's a bit of a protection mechanism as well because, you know, I suppose it makes them feel a little bit better that the about the situation sometimes I would imagine, you know, just speaker-0: 'Cause you've always seen this around you as well and it's it's how you've been and yeah, you don't know what it would be like the other way, do you? So it's a little bit scary. So it's safer. Like you said earlier, it's safer, isn't it? speaker-1: Absolutely, absolutely. And and and that's the crazy thing is about, you know, a lot of this work is, you know, it's like, well, how can this be actually protecting me from so like the subconscious is trying to protect me in some way, but it just seems ridiculous because why would it do this? You know, this I'm not enjoying this situation, but yet somehow that seems safer than making changes. So yeah, it's and that's where I become quite fascinated with it, but speaker-0: Yeah. Same. Especially with people you work for a long period of time is when they start to share some of the reasons they may be keeping something, it's like, ⁓ wow, like it's just there's no judgment. It's just like wow, that's a really interesting perspective that you have. That's possibly a belief from when you were a child as well. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah, no absolutely. speaker-0: So what sort of results have you seen from from people, you know, that have done both, work through both? So speaker-1: it it just means that the the challenges that they that they previously had are just much easier to overcome. ⁓ they find that the challenges just aren't s as strong. Some obviously sometimes it can can take longer than others and you know, 'cause sometimes, you know, there could be more more than one limiting belief. So ⁓ you know, so sometimes there still might be a little bit more work to do. But overall they find that they you know, that they can trust themselves a little bit better to make ⁓ you know to make decisions and yeah, just getting better results that are lasting longer and and just being more helpful, I suppose, in the long term. speaker-0: And so Helen, for you, if you were to say work 'cause obviously you're in Brisbane, would you also work with, say, a professional organizer in WA or like myself in Victoria that you could work with alongside them doing the actual physical side of it? speaker-1: It's something I absolutely would love to do. At the moment, because I've only ⁓ it's only a recent addition a recent edition that I I became a facilitator in the SiteKit. ⁓ so I so at the moment I can only do in person. But once I've ⁓ once I've done this and I've got my groove a little bit more I will then do the next course which will allow me to facilitate online. So then I would be able to people. Yeah. And that's something I really want to do just to be able to reach people and you know, and be a support to other organisers, you know, like yourself that that help it help help out in that area. But I think maybe, you know, it's worth having a look. There's there's, you know, there might be some psych people in your area that can that ⁓ concurrently do online. So I would definitely look into it because yeah, it's fascinating. Like so with the authentic and aligned, I I mean I've just recently helped my friend. She was interested in the work and she's like, ⁓ do think you could help me with my travel sickness? And yeah, she's because she had the story, she's ⁓ I've been always been sick, you know, travel sick from a child when I was five years old and she had all these stories and You know, I but it was to the point like on the you know, she travels a lot, so she'd be sick every every time she flew for years, you know, from from being young, but going on the ferry, the bus, you know, if a passenger in the in the car, like she she said it was just awful. But now just after one session, she's not had to take a s a sickness tablet. She's not been sick once anything. She yeah, she can passenger. Yeah, she's travelled and, you know, on ferries and and flown and she's not needed anything. And she's like it's just an absolute game changer. So so that's where, you know, I loved those stories where there's like a very black and white kind of ⁓ change but it isn't always isn't always as as easy as that with some people. But ⁓ yeah, it's fascinating stuff. So I definitely recommend looking into it. speaker-0: Yeah, that's amazing because there yeah, it's not just about obviously clutter. I know my daughter had something similar and it was around dogs. And then after she's like, Can we get a dog now? And I was like, What? That's crazy. Yeah, so it's good to hear the other examples that you know you could actually use this for is really helpful. So where can people find you? How what's the best way for people to connect? speaker-1: So I mean the best way ⁓ would be my website which is loving space solutions dot com dot AU. ⁓ you can see the different services. Obviously I do standard organizing and decluttering and also there's the aligned action which is the site K element so people can find me there. Instagram is where I'm most active for content. Still learning that one. It's not my strength, I will say, but I do enjoy doing it. But yeah, so Instagram at say is just Loving Space Solutions. Yeah. speaker-0: Thank you so much 'cause that will all be in the show notes so people will be able to connect with you and look you up as well and even find out anything more they want to about Psych K. Absolutely. Thank you, Helen, for your time. speaker-1: Absolutely, if anyone's got any questions about any of anything that we've discussed, they can contact me whichever way. Yeah, I'd love to hear from people. But yeah, thank you so much, Norel. This has been great. Thank you. Thank you.
