- 0:18Speaker 1: Happy Tuesday, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Glad to be with you here on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Fun show lined up for you today.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Gordy Chiesa is going to swing by, talk a little
- 0:32Speaker 2: NBA basketball.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Jerem Jordan for some red and blue.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Is it time to start questioning that BYU should be
- 0:40Speaker 2: the top-ranked team? In the Big 12 Conference, Jeff Schwartz
- 0:45Speaker 2: at 1 o'clock to talk all things college football and
- 0:48Speaker 2: the NFL and Twitter trolls.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We'll get into some Twitter trolls.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz, we did six years of radio together-ish, and
- 0:57Speaker 2: back in those days, he was sometimes overly willing to
- 1:02Speaker 2: engage with Twitter trolls. Now he's been calmed on that,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and I think this past weekend awakened the sleeping giant.
- 1:12Speaker 2: with engaging in the Twitter war of words. So, well,
- 1:15Speaker 2: a little bit of fun with that Morgan Scali coaches
- 1:21Speaker 2: show is tonight at 6 PM. Always great to hear
- 1:24Speaker 2: from the head coach to hear from Stevenson Sylvester and
- 1:28Speaker 2: bill Riley.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And I.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Don't know.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Do you know who the players are going to be
- 1:34Speaker 1: tonight yet?
- 1:35Speaker 2: James, have we gotten the notice on who the players,
- 1:38Speaker 2: we don't know yet who the players are going to be.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'll I usually get a text sometime during the show
- 1:43Speaker 2: that'll let you know who those players will be. So, man,
- 1:49Speaker 2: it is a really interesting time of year in all sports.
- 1:53Speaker 2: You've got hockey going on. You've got baseball playoffs, and
- 1:57Speaker 2: we'll talk about some of that today.
- 2:01Speaker 1: There's a.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Minor conspiracy going on that maybe there was some pitch
- 2:07Speaker 2: tipping happening, some Some reading and signaling being done from
- 2:12Speaker 2: second base in a playoff game, which is always fascinating
- 2:17Speaker 2: to get into the gamesmanship, the strategy, the written and
- 2:22Speaker 2: unwritten rules of a sport, especially one like baseball that
- 2:26Speaker 2: is so steeped in tradition, that is so old school
- 2:31Speaker 2: and has so many of these written and unwritten rules.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But the Padres....
- 2:39Speaker 2: The Padres and the Brewers with a minor scandal potentially
- 2:45Speaker 2: brewing as Mason Miller.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Had some issues in game two. So we'll get to
- 2:52Speaker 1: that on the show today.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Also, reports coming out of Oregon that Dante Moore is
- 2:58Speaker 2: back practicing. He's got helmet and shoulder pad, no contact
- 3:02Speaker 2: jersey on. that the Oregon quarterback who, if you remember,
- 3:07Speaker 2: starting the season was a lot of people's Heisman Trophy favorite.
- 3:11Speaker 2: A lot of people think he is a projected top-five pick.
- 3:15Speaker 2: A lot of people think that he is the best
- 3:16Speaker 2: quarterback in college football. There's no real consensus this year
- 3:21Speaker 2: on who that person is. You know, there's the conversation
- 3:25Speaker 2: about Arch Manning, Julian Sayen at Ohio State, Dante Moore.
- 3:32Speaker 2: The kid at Alabama whose name is escaping me right now, Keelan,
- 3:36Speaker 2: what's his name? You got a bunch of people inserting
- 3:41Speaker 2: their names. Keelan Russell, that's right. Thank you, James. You
- 3:44Speaker 2: got a bunch of people inserting their names into the
- 3:46Speaker 2: conversation of who the best quarterback in college football is.
- 3:51Speaker 1: We're living in an NIL world right now.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We're living in a world of college football right now
- 3:55Speaker 2: where these are highly compensated athletes. And I don't know
- 3:59Speaker 2: exactly how much money Dante Moore is making, but we
- 4:02Speaker 2: know that Dante Moore is making as much or more
- 4:04Speaker 2: than pretty much anyone in college football, that his salary
- 4:08Speaker 2: is comparable to somebody like Arch Manning, somebody like Bryce Underwood,
- 4:15Speaker 2: who's just, oh, I mean, good for that kid for
- 4:18Speaker 2: capitalizing while he could, because his, his paychecks in the
- 4:23Speaker 2: future are not going to be like they are right now.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And we're a Utah football station. You don't play Oregon
- 4:31Speaker 1: this year.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I guess if you make it to the college football
- 4:34Speaker 2: playoff and Oregon is there, maybe there could be an
- 4:36Speaker 2: Oregon Utah matchup, or maybe there's a bowl game to
- 4:39Speaker 2: be had against the ducks.
- 4:40Speaker 1: That's always a fun contest.
- 4:42Speaker 2: That's always a fun little rivalry going back to the
- 4:45Speaker 2: PAC 12 days. The only reason I bring up the
- 4:48Speaker 2: Dante Moore situation is these guys are that have an
- 4:53Speaker 2: executive decision to make.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Are already professionals now.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And if you're Dante Moore, I I'm not sure whether
- 5:04Speaker 2: or not the, like the cam rising situation at Utah
- 5:09Speaker 2: informed the way that anyone else does their NIL deals.
- 5:13Speaker 1: We still don't know.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I still don't know 100% how much of what was
- 5:16Speaker 2: promised to Cam Rising actually got delivered to Cam Rising
- 5:20Speaker 2: on an NIL front because he missed so much time
- 5:23Speaker 2: due to injury. I don't know what contingencies these contracts
- 5:27Speaker 2: have in place. And if you're Dante Moore and you're
- 5:30Speaker 2: a projected top five pick in the NFL... All respect
- 5:35Speaker 2: to the college football world, and that is my favorite sport.
- 5:39Speaker 1: That is my favorite thing to watch.
- 5:41Speaker 2: That is, for me, as I've said many times on
- 5:44Speaker 2: the air, college football is the thing from a sports
- 5:50Speaker 2: and entertainment standpoint. But I also am aware of the
- 5:56Speaker 2: fact that a lot of these guys, college basketball players
- 5:59Speaker 2: even more so than college football players, they're maximizing what
- 6:03Speaker 2: they can do in the professional ranks. They're maximizing what
- 6:07Speaker 2: their contract is going to look like in the professional ranks.
- 6:12Speaker 1: If you're a top 25 quarterback, it's probably a no
- 6:18Speaker 1: brainer that, Hey, you know what?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Get back there and keep going. And if you're a
- 6:21Speaker 2: top five guy in the NFL draft and you could
- 6:26Speaker 2: still be that, even if you don't end up back
- 6:28Speaker 2: on a football field this year, Allah, Nick Bosa, Do
- 6:33Speaker 2: you suit up again for the university of Oregon? Do
- 6:35Speaker 2: you sit up again for your college football team? Now
- 6:39Speaker 2: in Nick Bosa's day, it was kind of a no
- 6:42Speaker 2: brainer not to, right? Because I'm sure he was getting
- 6:45Speaker 2: some kind of illegal handshake money, but how dare you?
- 6:49Speaker 2: He wasn't getting the five or $ 7.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Million that Dante Moore is getting through Ohio.
- 6:54Speaker 5: State university would never, would never participate in such shenanigans.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Are you sure about that?
- 6:59Speaker 4: James?
- 6:59Speaker 1: How dare you? Are you sure?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Um, at the end of the day, everyone has to
- 7:07Speaker 2: make a decision on their financial future and the financial
- 7:11Speaker 2: present for these guys is changing the arithmetic on this
- 7:15Speaker 2: pretty significantly, but like take Dante more out of it, right?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Like let's make this arch Manning. If arch Manning goes
- 7:22Speaker 2: down with a pretty bad concussion, a concussive hit that
- 7:28Speaker 2: maybe in reality, wasn't as ugly as it looked on television.
- 7:33Speaker 2: the fencing response always gets people really freaked out when
- 7:37Speaker 2: people go stiff. I am probably jaded to that. I'm
- 7:41Speaker 2: probably calloused because I've seen that in the gym a
- 7:44Speaker 2: hundred times.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You know what I mean? And I'm sure it happens
- 7:48Speaker 1: in the ring in competition. It happens even more.
- 7:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Right. And I guys are typically just fine. It's happened
- 7:55Speaker 1: to me and I think I'm fine.
- 7:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Right now.
- 8:00Speaker 2: We get a little bit squeamish about it when it's
- 8:02Speaker 2: to a Tonga by low and it's happening once every
- 8:04Speaker 2: nine weeks.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And I think we should be squeamish about that.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But somebody like Dante Moore, who has, as far as
- 8:12Speaker 2: we can tell this, like incredibly high ceiling, both in
- 8:15Speaker 2: college football and potentially in the NFL. And, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 2: being a number three pick in the upcoming draft or
- 8:23Speaker 2: a number one pick in the upcoming draft or number
- 8:25Speaker 2: five pick in the upcoming draft guarantees you that like
- 8:31Speaker 2: $ 24 million or something like that, your $ 5 million current
- 8:35Speaker 2: college salary, even if they say, hey, we're not going
- 8:37Speaker 2: to pay you that if you don't play again, now
- 8:39Speaker 2: you're saying, well, all right, I still need to make
- 8:44Speaker 2: the right decision for my future. And I don't enjoy
- 8:48Speaker 2: having to have these conversations. I said it very carefully
- 8:51Speaker 2: a couple times on the air last year, but Spencer
- 8:55Speaker 2: Fano could have shut it down for the University of
- 8:58Speaker 2: Utah had he wanted to, had he been interested in that,
- 9:01Speaker 2: he could have shut things.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Down about halfway through the season.
- 9:03Speaker 5: About when, I mean, I know that the Utes were
- 9:07Speaker 5: still in the college football playoff picture, still in the
- 9:11Speaker 5: big 12 championship picture in mid November, but he could have,
- 9:16Speaker 5: it was a slim chance for either one of those
- 9:18Speaker 5: at that time.
- 9:18Speaker 7: Right.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Particularly the big 12 championship game.
- 9:21Speaker 5: He could have made the business decision that like, Hey,
- 9:24Speaker 5: we don't really have anything to play for. Like we,
- 9:26Speaker 5: we technically we do, but we don't really, Maybe I'll
- 9:29Speaker 5: just sit out because I'm going to be a top
- 9:31Speaker 5: 10 pick.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And I don't want guys to make this decision. I
- 9:35Speaker 2: didn't like it when Nick Bosa did it. And I
- 9:38Speaker 2: didn't like it when the San Francisco 49ers decided to
- 9:41Speaker 2: pick him anyway. I want there to be a consequence
- 9:45Speaker 2: for that. I'm getting used to it because this is
- 9:49Speaker 2: what the college football world is now. And by the way,
- 9:52Speaker 2: like I feel comfortable having this conversation because it's, somebody else.
- 9:59Speaker 2: and it's not one of quote unquote, our guys, it's
- 10:02Speaker 2: not a Utah guy. Cause I don't want to seem
- 10:04Speaker 2: like I'm encouraging this or whatever, but if Spencer Fano
- 10:08Speaker 2: had rolled an ankle last year in game seven and decided,
- 10:15Speaker 2: you know what? I put enough on tape. And I'm
- 10:19Speaker 2: just going to heal up. I'm going to avoid the risk.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And I'm just going to go ahead and ride this
- 10:24Speaker 2: thing off into the sunset. And I'll be a proud Ute,
- 10:28Speaker 2: but I'm not going to finish this season. I think
- 10:31Speaker 2: all of us would have had to begrudgingly at the
- 10:34Speaker 2: very least support that and say, yeah, man, like do
- 10:38Speaker 2: what's best for yourself and your future and your family
- 10:40Speaker 2: and all those types of things.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I'm very thankful that that's not how it played out.
- 10:47Speaker 2: But we see guys do it in the bowl games
- 10:50Speaker 2: and we don't bat an eye anymore. There was a
- 10:52Speaker 2: time 10 years ago where, when guys were opting out
- 10:55Speaker 2: of bowl games, when Christian McCaffrey was like, I'm not
- 10:58Speaker 2: playing in a bowl game. I was like, not you
- 11:01Speaker 2: too at two Brute Christian.
- 11:04Speaker 1: How dare you don't be that guy. I mean, I expect,
- 11:08Speaker 1: I expect this from some yay.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Who I don't expect it from a Stanford should have
- 11:15Speaker 2: been a Heisman trophy winner.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Pac-12 greats, yeah. And it was not just the Independence Bowl.
- 11:24Speaker 5: It was Rose Bowls. It was Sugar Bowls. It was
- 11:29Speaker 5: New Year's Six Bowls that weren't college football playoff. I
- 11:32Speaker 5: think we had the playoff at that time when guys
- 11:35Speaker 5: were– this became more popular. It was like, oh, not
- 11:38Speaker 5: in the playoff– I don't care if it's a Rose bowl.
- 11:42Speaker 5: I'll I don't need to play this.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I remember very emphatically saying when guys
- 11:47Speaker 2: started to opt out of the quote unquote, meaningless bowl
- 11:49Speaker 2: games being like, well, they're not going to opt out
- 11:52Speaker 2: of Rose bowls. They're not going to opt out of
- 11:54Speaker 2: the college football playoff.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And then Utah played in a Rose bowl where like
- 11:58Speaker 1: four guys opted out for the Ohio state Buckeyes and
- 12:02Speaker 1: did it diminish the game? Ultimately the game was still
- 12:04Speaker 1: absolutely fantastic. because it was Ohio state and because Ohio
- 12:09Speaker 1: state's depth.
- 12:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Had Jackson Smith and Jigba and had Marvin Harrison jr.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And had a Mecca at Buka. You had guys.
- 12:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 2: You had on that team. There were seven NFL wide receivers.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Now Ohio State, you can kind of get away with it,
- 12:25Speaker 2: but if you had been playing Iowa in that Rose Bowl,
- 12:28Speaker 2: or even the next year when you played against Penn
- 12:30Speaker 2: State in that Rose Bowl, opt-outs were a lot more meaningful,
- 12:34Speaker 2: a lot more impactful for teams like that, right? So
- 12:38Speaker 2: I remember being like, no, it's sacred. You don't even
- 12:45Speaker 2: broach this. It shall not be mentioned that there's an
- 12:48Speaker 2: option here. to opt out of the second half of
- 12:50Speaker 2: your junior season or your senior season, whether you're injured
- 12:53Speaker 2: or not. If you're Dante Moore, you're having the same
- 12:57Speaker 2: conversation with your family that Nick Bosa had with his family.
- 13:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And Nick posted, by the way, played even fewer games.
- 13:04Speaker 2: He played two games that junior season.
- 13:06Speaker 1: That's right. It was the, I think it was, I'm reading.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I looked it up here.
- 13:11Speaker 5: It was the third game of the season that he left.
- 13:16Speaker 5: So it was two plus games, not even three full games.
- 13:19Speaker 5: And interesting because I just wanted to look back to
- 13:21Speaker 5: see what the full context was. He was on track
- 13:26Speaker 5: to if he did decide to play later that season,
- 13:29Speaker 5: he was on track to return in November. So it
- 13:33Speaker 5: must have just been a calculation of like, I'm going
- 13:35Speaker 5: to play one game.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'm going to play.
- 13:37Speaker 5: I'm going to come back to play three more games.
- 13:40Speaker 5: I might as well just get ready for the NFL draft,
- 13:42Speaker 5: which on the one hand, you can understand that. On
- 13:45Speaker 5: the other hand, you're like, hold on. You guys could
- 13:47Speaker 5: win Ohio State. always has the talent. And at that
- 13:51Speaker 5: time they did too, to win a national championship, maybe.
- 13:54Speaker 5: And you're the best defensive player. You don't want to be,
- 13:56Speaker 5: you don't want to come back in November to help
- 13:59Speaker 5: them finish the job.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Apparently not.
- 14:00Speaker 2: So whether or not he's going to play against UCLA
- 14:05Speaker 2: is questioning. We're talking about Dante more here, don't say more.
- 14:10Speaker 2: And that's now a meaningful game. UCLA is better than
- 14:13Speaker 2: people thought they were going to be. They're a top
- 14:15Speaker 2: 25 team. They're at least a fringe contender. in the
- 14:21Speaker 2: college football playoff race that is gradually taking shape. Oregon,
- 14:27Speaker 2: you could say, well, we need you, Dante Moore, because
- 14:31Speaker 2: we've got UCLA on the schedule.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Uh, we've got Nebraska, Illinois, Northwestern. Northwestern is sneaky. Good
- 14:38Speaker 1: right now. They're not ranked yet, but they're sneaky.
- 14:39Speaker 7: Good.
- 14:40Speaker 2: They've got a road game to Ohio state. They've still
- 14:42Speaker 2: got Michigan, although that might not be as scary as
- 14:45Speaker 2: people thought. Uh, they've got a road trip to Michigan state.
- 14:48Speaker 2: They've got Washington. Dan Lanning is looking at this situation
- 14:52Speaker 2: and he's saying, do I want my $ 5 million quarterback
- 14:54Speaker 2: playing here?
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yes. Does my $ 5 million quarterback want to be playing
- 14:59Speaker 1: in this situation?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Or are we okay with the $ 1 million backup with
- 15:03Speaker 2: the Dylan Ryola who played very, very well in relief
- 15:07Speaker 2: of an injured Dante Moore.
- 15:09Speaker 5: And is obviously immensely talented. I mean, he himself was
- 15:14Speaker 5: a highly touted recruit.
- 15:15Speaker 2: He was a aggressively pursued four-star five-star type talent who
- 15:21Speaker 2: has a weird swim fan obsession with Patrick Mahomes. But
- 15:25Speaker 2: beyond that, like he's the son and nephew of NFL players.
- 15:29Speaker 2: He's a guy who knows a little bit about, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 2: what it takes to excel at the very, very highest
- 15:35Speaker 2: level of college football and NFL football. And we're, we're
- 15:39Speaker 2: in a situation now where if this conversation were had
- 15:43Speaker 2: pre NIL and we're talking about somebody who is an
- 15:47Speaker 2: elite talent, a projected number one, number two, number three,
- 15:51Speaker 2: number five, even a top 10 pick, we're probably begrudgingly
- 15:58Speaker 2: in a sort of cynical manner saying, yeah, I mean
- 16:01Speaker 2: the kid in his own best interest might be better
- 16:05Speaker 2: served to sit out the rest of the season.
- 16:07Speaker 1: This concussion, by the way, is not.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Like a, severe light sensitivity, dizziness and vertigo for the
- 16:16Speaker 2: next six weeks.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Kind of concussion. He's already moving, running around playing. He's
- 16:20Speaker 1: still non-contact.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I'm sure they're going to make it as careful and
- 16:24Speaker 2: gradual a return as possible. I don't anticipate that Dante
- 16:27Speaker 2: Moore will even be cleared to play against UCLA or
- 16:31Speaker 2: that if he is cleared to play that Dan Lanning
- 16:33Speaker 2: and his family and everyone would say, let's get you
- 16:35Speaker 2: back on the field as soon as possible. Even though
- 16:38Speaker 2: that is an important game, Oregon should be talented enough. Dante,
- 16:42Speaker 2: his backup, Dylan Ryola, should be good enough to give
- 16:45Speaker 2: you a fighting chance against somebody like UCLA. And if
- 16:48Speaker 2: you're Oregon, even though you lost to Oklahoma State, you
- 16:52Speaker 2: still have some built-in wiggle room here for a college
- 16:55Speaker 2: football playoff because, A, you're the Oregon Ducks. The brand
- 16:59Speaker 2: recognition does matter, even though it shouldn't. And, B, you have...
- 17:05Speaker 2: Probably two more, even though there's only one after UCLA
- 17:08Speaker 2: that is ranked as of today. You probably have two
- 17:10Speaker 2: more ranked games on the schedule that can elevate you
- 17:13Speaker 2: back into the conversation, even if you did. retain a
- 17:17Speaker 2: second loss against UCLA. It makes things a lot harder.
- 17:20Speaker 2: You can't think about it that way. You can't assume
- 17:22Speaker 2: margin for error, but you also in today's world of
- 17:26Speaker 2: college football, especially if you're Dan Lanning, especially if you're
- 17:30Speaker 2: a coach who is well-known as a recruiter and a developer,
- 17:34Speaker 2: you have to make sure that you do right by
- 17:37Speaker 2: a kid, because if you lose the recruiting pipeline, if
- 17:41Speaker 2: you lose the reputation of, that you are taking care
- 17:46Speaker 2: of these young men at a place like Oregon, you're
- 17:49Speaker 2: not getting the five-star quarterback next time. If you rush
- 17:52Speaker 2: somebody back into service, so to speak, if you mishandle
- 17:58Speaker 2: an injury situation, that is a battle. You then have
- 18:01Speaker 2: to fight on the recruiting trail for the next several years.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Ask Kyle Whittingham about that. Ask Andy Ludwig about that.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Ask Jason Beck about that. Ask anyone who has, who
- 18:18Speaker 2: had to deal with the backlash in the fallout of
- 18:22Speaker 2: a Jack Tuttle situation, a cam rising situation, right?
- 18:26Speaker 1: Peter Castelli, Peter Castelli situation. I mean, there's, we.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Forget about that one. That one was wild at the time.
- 18:33Speaker 5: He decided not to play the rest of the season
- 18:36Speaker 5: when they were.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Packed whole champions.
- 18:37Speaker 2: There's there's something there where you have to look at
- 18:42Speaker 2: all angles of this. So eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 18:45Speaker 2: zero 700.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It's you. Or if you're old enough, it's your son.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And that person, let's see what the 2027 NFL draft
- 19:00Speaker 1: pay scale is going to be. The rookie 2027 rookie scale.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Is not yet filled out on SpotTrack. What are we
- 19:11Speaker 1: doing here, guys? But you're securing for yourself. What was
- 19:17Speaker 1: this year's? What did Fernando Mendoza end up getting? His
- 19:22Speaker 1: contract was $ 54.
- 19:24Speaker 6: 6 million.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Over what, four years? Is that what it is? Cause
- 19:33Speaker 1: you get a four year deal with a fifth year option.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:36Speaker 2: The number one overall pick your, your 54.57 million over
- 19:40Speaker 2: four years. So that ends up being about 14 million.
- 19:43Speaker 2: And a lot of that it's 13.6 million, but a
- 19:46Speaker 2: lot of that is structured as a signing bonus. That's
- 19:49Speaker 2: how the, guys basically guarantee their rookie deal is they get,
- 19:55Speaker 2: they get that, you know, half or more structured into
- 19:58Speaker 2: a signing bonus, which again, in the NFL, that's really
- 20:03Speaker 2: all you can count on is the money that you're
- 20:05Speaker 2: guaranteed at signing or that is fully guaranteed. And in
- 20:09Speaker 2: these rookie deals, the guaranteed at signing, that's where the
- 20:11Speaker 2: negotiation comes in. You know how, like it's, it's already
- 20:15Speaker 2: written what the pay scale is going to be. That's
- 20:17Speaker 2: something that happened post Sam Bradford, but yeah, that's a
- 20:21Speaker 2: CBA thing. It's a CBA thing. And now when you
- 20:24Speaker 2: get these sort of like random November. It won't be November,
- 20:30Speaker 2: but you get like these early August. Hey, so-and-so has
- 20:36Speaker 2: finally signed their number eight overall pick. It's because the
- 20:40Speaker 2: negotiation was happening on how much of that already determined
- 20:43Speaker 2: number was going to be guaranteed via signing bonus, right?
- 20:46Speaker 1: How much am I getting up front?
- 20:48Speaker 2: So what we're talking about with Dante Moore and everyone
- 20:51Speaker 2: else who's in that conversation, right? And Devin Dampier has
- 20:54Speaker 2: to make this decision for himself and sooner than later
- 20:58Speaker 2: because he's got an extra year of college eligibility, right?
- 21:01Speaker 2: When you're Dante Moore, you're looking at it and you're saying, okay,
- 21:05Speaker 2: do I feel I have done enough to guarantee my
- 21:08Speaker 2: spot in the top five? I maybe don't feel good
- 21:11Speaker 2: about that yet because of how crowded that quarterback conversation is.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Beyond that, okay, I've checked that box. I've decided, yes,
- 21:21Speaker 2: I still feel like I will be a top five
- 21:23Speaker 2: player even if I sit out now I make that
- 21:26Speaker 2: executive decision now. I know that I can prepare myself.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I can get ready for the combine. I can kill
- 21:32Speaker 2: it at the combine. I can kill it at my
- 21:33Speaker 2: personal workouts.
- 21:35Speaker 1: All right.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Now, do I feel like it is worth, if I
- 21:40Speaker 2: even have to, and again, I don't really know. If
- 21:42Speaker 2: I have to say, I will no longer collect on
- 21:45Speaker 2: my Oregon pay, which I get now, which is mine now,
- 21:50Speaker 2: which I'm getting the checks today.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm getting the checks today.
- 21:54Speaker 2: On the 5th and 20th of every month or whatever,
- 21:57Speaker 2: am I willing to say, I will forego the rest
- 22:02Speaker 2: of this because I don't feel good about getting hurt again?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Was I hurt enough in that game that I'm scared
- 22:09Speaker 2: to get hit again? You have to check all of
- 22:14Speaker 2: these different boxes. Is the risk worth the reward? Do
- 22:18Speaker 2: I think the reward is virtually guaranteed to me? Because
- 22:21Speaker 2: if that reward is going to come in the form
- 22:24Speaker 2: of a 27, 25, $ 23 million signing bonus in the
- 22:29Speaker 2: NFL draft next year, am I willing to risk that
- 22:34Speaker 2: either being totally absent or more realistically somewhat diminished by
- 22:39Speaker 2: getting hurt again this year, having concussion problems, whatever do.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I need to ensure that.
- 22:46Speaker 2: That I get that by saying, I will say goodbye
- 22:51Speaker 2: to my 5 million or $ 7 million deal from Oregon
- 22:54Speaker 2: right now.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And am I willing to deal with the fallout from that?
- 22:57Speaker 2: And am I willing to answer that question in the
- 23:00Speaker 2: NFL combine and the scouting process? Am I willing to
- 23:03Speaker 2: sit down in front of Jim Harbaugh when he's just like, look,
- 23:07Speaker 2: we thought Justin Herbert was going to be good. It's
- 23:09Speaker 2: really our offensive line.
- 23:10Speaker 1: That's the problem.
- 23:11Speaker 2: But I'm going to use Herbert as my scapegoat here.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I need a new quarterback. Are you really a football guy?
- 23:17Speaker 2: You shut it down for your team. They're going to
- 23:21Speaker 2: try to play gotcha. And if this is your son,
- 23:25Speaker 2: instead of it being you personally, how much does that
- 23:27Speaker 2: change the calculus and the decision-making process like this? He's
- 23:31Speaker 2: back at practice now, which I think indicates that Dante
- 23:34Speaker 2: Moore is going to play again this year. And I
- 23:36Speaker 2: think ultimately that is going to be the right decision
- 23:39Speaker 2: for him. I don't think that the injury was severe enough,
- 23:43Speaker 2: that the concussion was severe enough. if he's already back
- 23:46Speaker 2: at practice that he's quote unquote, risking too much. But
- 23:51Speaker 2: if you took what is happening with Tua Tagovailoa now,
- 23:54Speaker 2: and you put that on him when he was a
- 23:56Speaker 2: college junior or senior, we would be having a very
- 23:59Speaker 2: different conversation here.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 5: A couple of, a couple of things would factor into
- 24:05Speaker 5: this decision.
- 24:06Speaker 1: If I were Dante Moore, one is.
- 24:12Speaker 5: First concussion is, and we're assuming it's not that serious
- 24:16Speaker 5: because of what you just said, OC, probably come back
- 24:20Speaker 5: and play. You get a second concussion this season, maybe
- 24:27Speaker 5: you shut it down. That's how I might approach the
- 24:30Speaker 5: concussion thing. The other part of it is much more
- 24:33Speaker 5: simple for me. If I'm Dante Moore, do I want
- 24:36Speaker 5: to play college football?
- 24:38Speaker 1: Yes or no?
- 24:39Speaker 5: If it's yes... I'm going to play. I don't care
- 24:42Speaker 5: about any of the rest of that stuff. I'll deal
- 24:43Speaker 5: with that later. If it's no, then, or not if
- 24:48Speaker 5: it's a simple no, it's probably not going to be
- 24:50Speaker 5: a simple no. If it's a, you know what, I
- 24:54Speaker 5: think it's better for my future. I'm not totally just,
- 24:59Speaker 5: it's not just an immediate yes, I love playing college
- 25:03Speaker 5: football enough that I want to risk this. That's probably
- 25:07Speaker 5: a no.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Shut it down.
- 25:09Speaker 5: I think that we in the media and I, and
- 25:12Speaker 5: probably agents and NFL decision makers, people in college, we
- 25:18Speaker 5: probably underestimate that. These are young men who love playing
- 25:24Speaker 5: their sport probably. And when they come back to play
- 25:32Speaker 5: and we're all like, what the heck, man, you're going
- 25:33Speaker 5: to be the number one pick. Why would you risk that?
- 25:36Speaker 5: It's because they, they, they love playing football. It's because
- 25:38Speaker 5: they love playing the sport they're playing. And I think
- 25:41Speaker 5: that's probably the simplest calculation is for Dante Mori. If
- 25:45Speaker 5: I'm healthy and I love doing this, I'm going to play.
- 25:49Speaker 5: This is a great text from Derek.
- 25:51Speaker 2: The thing I truly do not like about is the
- 25:52Speaker 2: sit out situation is the most rookies come out and
- 25:56Speaker 2: they're not ready. Would you rather be top 10 than
- 25:58Speaker 2: flame out in three years or stay in college, become
- 26:00Speaker 2: ready and have a 10 or 15 year career readiness
- 26:03Speaker 2: should matter more than a paycheck. when you were already
- 26:05Speaker 2: getting paid. And that by the way, is something we
- 26:09Speaker 2: are seeing in college football, right? Guys are less apt
- 26:14Speaker 2: to leap to the draft at the first opportunity, because
- 26:18Speaker 2: especially if you're kind of like borderline ready and the
- 26:21Speaker 2: NFL knows that, and the NFL is telling you that,
- 26:24Speaker 2: and the NFL is delivering a message to you. Like, yeah,
- 26:27Speaker 2: maybe late, later round pick, maybe even a late first
- 26:31Speaker 2: round pick. if you're a late first round pick in
- 26:34Speaker 2: college football, or you're the starting quarterback at Miami, the
- 26:38Speaker 2: Miami job pays more, not over, not in a, in
- 26:43Speaker 2: a guaranteed way over four years, but next year.
- 26:47Speaker 1: It pays a year.
- 26:48Speaker 5: If you got one year of eligibility left, that's all
- 26:50Speaker 5: you're thinking about is what's going to pay me.
- 26:52Speaker 2: What's going to pay me better next year. And, and
- 26:55Speaker 2: we don't, we don't know Dante Moore. We don't know
- 26:57Speaker 2: Dante Moore's parents. We don't know his family's financial situation,
- 27:00Speaker 2: although I think they're probably doing okay now because he's
- 27:03Speaker 2: already made a lot of money in college.
- 27:05Speaker 1: However, right?
- 27:07Speaker 2: When you have $ 10 million and someone says, well, next
- 27:12Speaker 2: year you're going to sign something that says you get 54.
- 27:15Speaker 5: Million over multiple years. So you get 10 million times four.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Are you risking that and saying, well, I really love
- 27:24Speaker 2: being an Oregon duck though.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I hope the answer is yes. I genuinely do.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I hope the answer is, Man, we got some unfinished business.
- 27:31Speaker 2: I didn't play well enough against Oregon, Oklahoma state. And
- 27:34Speaker 2: that's why we lost. And I want to go back
- 27:36Speaker 2: and I want to show everyone we're going to make
- 27:39Speaker 2: it to the college football playoff. Kate on the text
- 27:41Speaker 2: line says, look, I think he's already diminished his draft
- 27:43Speaker 2: stock a little bit.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Because he's not playing as well as people expected him to.
- 27:47Speaker 5: So, so come back and play better is the answer
- 27:50Speaker 5: to Kate on the text line. I get, I get
- 27:52Speaker 5: where he's coming from, but like sitting at, sitting out
- 27:54Speaker 5: the rest of the way is not going to help
- 27:55Speaker 5: your draft. If you're, if you're already, if it's already diminishing,
- 27:58Speaker 5: if it's already pointed downward in a serious manner, then.
- 28:01Speaker 2: It's going to get worse. If you sit out, sitting
- 28:03Speaker 2: out could get worse. If people are like, it's level.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:07Speaker 1: You're just like, okay, fine. You can sit out and
- 28:09Speaker 1: probably not risk it.
- 28:10Speaker 2: And maybe this question about Dante Moore is not enough
- 28:13Speaker 2: for people. Like if we were having it about Arch Manning,
- 28:16Speaker 2: if you're having it about Darian Mensah, Darian Mensah is
- 28:20Speaker 2: killing it right now in college football.
- 28:22Speaker 5: Right now, if they voted for the Heisman, he's probably
- 28:25Speaker 5: the winner. That's how good he's been playing.
- 28:27Speaker 1: And so maybe Dante Moore is the wrong person. Although
- 28:29Speaker 1: he's the one who's actually injured.
- 28:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:31Speaker 2: But Man, it's a weird thing to watch and see
- 28:35Speaker 2: as Oregon is going to have to handle this situation very,
- 28:38Speaker 2: very carefully, not only for now, not only for this
- 28:41Speaker 2: particular season, but also for the future of a Dan
- 28:45Speaker 2: Lanning program that has all the money in the world
- 28:49Speaker 2: to spend and is one of those top, top flight
- 28:51Speaker 2: recruiting programs. If you don't handle this injury situation correctly
- 28:56Speaker 2: with a guy who is in that category that everyone's
- 28:59Speaker 2: looking at and saying like, well, what did they do
- 29:01Speaker 2: with the last five-star?
- 29:03Speaker 1: Oh man, they did him dirty. I'm going to Miami instead.
- 29:06Speaker 5: I mean, it's not unlike what we've seen in professional sports.
- 29:10Speaker 5: I can think of a couple of examples in the NBA.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Kawhi Leonard's ending with the Spurs. He felt like the
- 29:19Speaker 5: team doctors didn't have his best interest or they were
- 29:22Speaker 5: misdiagnosing something and forcefully saying, this is what it is.
- 29:27Speaker 5: And his people were saying, no, it's not that. You're
- 29:29Speaker 5: completely misunderstanding this thing. And the thing that you're suggesting,
- 29:34Speaker 5: coming back and playing through this is going to make
- 29:36Speaker 5: it worse. That led to Kawhi Leonard being like, get
- 29:39Speaker 5: me out of San Antonio.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:42Speaker 5: And the trajectory until they, of that franchise until they
- 29:45Speaker 5: drafted Victor Wimben Yama went way down from that point.
- 29:50Speaker 5: So that, That's what you're talking about in the college level.
- 29:54Speaker 5: It's not much different. It's probably even more exacerbated because
- 29:58Speaker 5: you have to go out and sign free agents every
- 30:00Speaker 5: year at high school recruits or transfer portal.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 30:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 30:05Speaker 1: We got to take a break. We'll come back.
- 30:07Speaker 2: We'll have a little basketball discussion with Gordy Chiesa, our
- 30:11Speaker 2: resident NBA guru.
- 30:15Speaker 1: We've got.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Gordy next. We've got red and blue coming. We've got
- 30:22Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz later. A loaded Daily Dump today. We're just
- 30:26Speaker 2: getting started. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700
- 30:28Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Peace out.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz with former
- 30:40Speaker 4: Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more about the
- 30:44Speaker 4: NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 30:46Speaker 8: Let's not get crazy.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Come for the Hoops Talk.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Stay for his list of the day.
- 30:50Speaker 1: My list today.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordy Chiesa on the Sean
- 30:56Speaker 4: O'Connell Show.
- 30:58Speaker 7: Oh, hey, hey.
- 31:01Speaker 6: Nothing will matter with your head.
- 31:04Speaker 7: Baby, find it.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome to our
- 31:09Speaker 1: resident NBA guru, Gordy Chiesa, the longtime coach at all
- 31:14Speaker 1: levels of basketball. And it's your day, Gordy. It's National
- 31:17Speaker 1: Coaches Day.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Sean, yes it is. Today, October 6th, is recognized as
- 31:23Speaker 3: National Coaches Day where, in all sports, where athletic and
- 31:28Speaker 3: life coaches are being honored. because of their mentoring, how
- 31:33Speaker 3: they motivate, how they instill lifetime positive values. So it's
- 31:37Speaker 3: really a big thing. And think about, Sean, anyone who's
- 31:40Speaker 3: been successful in any sport, there was a coach in
- 31:43Speaker 3: your life or coaches that helped you gain where you
- 31:46Speaker 3: were as far as positivity.
- 31:50Speaker 2: I mean, coaches, I think, still feel a really important
- 31:54Speaker 2: role in kids' lives, young men's lives at the college level,
- 31:59Speaker 2: probably still at the professional level, although I never played
- 32:02Speaker 2: professional team sports Gordy. And I guess I want to
- 32:05Speaker 2: start there when you're, when you're talking about the professional ranks, right?
- 32:09Speaker 2: Like coaches in little league, they do it for the
- 32:12Speaker 2: love of the kids, the love of the game in
- 32:14Speaker 2: high school. I think it's still mostly that in college,
- 32:17Speaker 2: there's some combination of that. And obviously it's an incredibly
- 32:21Speaker 2: lucrative business and the professional success and the reputation and,
- 32:25Speaker 2: and the, the winning matters more than anything else. When
- 32:29Speaker 2: you get to professional ranks and you're still dealing with,
- 32:32Speaker 2: at the NBA level, all these young people that are
- 32:35Speaker 2: in formative years, are becoming who they're going to be,
- 32:39Speaker 2: is there room for coaches to fill that mentorship, father-type
- 32:44Speaker 2: role still in professional sports?
- 32:47Speaker 3: Yes, very much. And a lot of it is to
- 32:50Speaker 3: instill those people confidence. So besides building up their skill set,
- 32:56Speaker 3: a lot of people... which is perfectly normal, even though
- 33:01Speaker 3: they're bravado, as far as outwardly inwardly, sometimes they lack confidence.
- 33:06Speaker 3: And when you're around players, you can see their personalities,
- 33:11Speaker 3: what makes them go and what makes them hesitant. And
- 33:14Speaker 3: as coaches, we try to bring the best out of
- 33:16Speaker 3: each person at their potential. And that's why I always
- 33:19Speaker 3: talk about you see it and feel it for the players.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Sometimes as a coach, you know, it's better to, for
- 33:26Speaker 3: the player that he knows himself of what he can do,
- 33:29Speaker 3: what he accomplished. Because a lot of times it's like
- 33:31Speaker 3: a hidden mechanism where if I try and I fail,
- 33:35Speaker 3: then it wasn't worth it versus the opposite where you
- 33:39Speaker 3: want to be the best you can be and the
- 33:41Speaker 3: coach will bring the best out of you and there's
- 33:44Speaker 3: no such thing as failure if you give it your best.
- 33:47Speaker 3: And that's what coaches do at every single level, especially
- 33:50Speaker 3: in the pros. I like to think that every successful coach,
- 33:53Speaker 3: especially in college and in the pros, they listen, they challenge,
- 33:59Speaker 3: they develop, they connect, and they inspire. And those five
- 34:04Speaker 3: attributes is the winning formula between the coaches and the player.
- 34:11Speaker 2: For this Utah Jazz franchise right now, the coach, we've
- 34:16Speaker 2: talked about him a lot over the years. Will Hardy
- 34:19Speaker 2: has been in a really awkward situation where he's trying
- 34:22Speaker 2: to achieve all the normal goals and the things that
- 34:24Speaker 2: you just talked about while also playing this game of
- 34:28Speaker 2: tanking and maximizing draft positioning and things like that. And
- 34:32Speaker 2: I think I've asked some form of this question several times,
- 34:35Speaker 2: but the reality is upon us where he will have
- 34:39Speaker 2: to flip the switch and he will have to be
- 34:40Speaker 2: the best version of himself. And he will have to
- 34:43Speaker 2: manage things like playing time and injuries in a real
- 34:46Speaker 2: way instead of a manufactured way. And the difficulty of
- 34:50Speaker 2: doing that, give me some sense of the challenge ahead
- 34:54Speaker 2: of Will Hardy there.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Well, the accountability defensively. So the challenge will be is
- 34:59Speaker 3: that how can we remain an offensive force, which the
- 35:03Speaker 3: Jets really are. They can score the ball, but now
- 35:06Speaker 3: it comes to accountability on the other side of the floor,
- 35:09Speaker 3: and that's playing defense. So, Sean, usually speaking, there's an
- 35:13Speaker 3: element of hurt feelings. Hurt feelings. Because your action players
- 35:18Speaker 3: do things that they don't want to do naturally, and
- 35:21Speaker 3: that's why I play defense and defense. be able to
- 35:25Speaker 3: run down the floor and get yourself set and all
- 35:28Speaker 3: the things that most times defensively that it hurts. It
- 35:32Speaker 3: hurts your body to get over screening action. to play
- 35:35Speaker 3: help to help with defense, to run in transition and
- 35:38Speaker 3: build a wall, to take away, I will say tonight,
- 35:41Speaker 3: Jamal Murray's penetration versus the Jazz versus the Nuggets or
- 35:45Speaker 3: be early position to try to take on Jokic if
- 35:48Speaker 3: he does play as a Jazz tonight as far as
- 35:50Speaker 3: him being a laser passer. So these are all things
- 35:54Speaker 3: that the Jazz have to try to improve dramatically. And
- 35:58Speaker 3: it starts with accountability. And I'm sure the coaches, they
- 36:01Speaker 3: know this. And the players I'm sure we'll find out
- 36:04Speaker 3: very shortly. So there'll be element of her feelings and
- 36:07Speaker 3: her feelings, Sean are good in the pros, because that
- 36:11Speaker 3: means that you're challenging them about where we're playing to win.
- 36:16Speaker 3: And that's really the essence of the whole thing, especially
- 36:18Speaker 3: in the pro ranks and college and high school, there's
- 36:21Speaker 3: mixed emotions and, and you want to win certainly, but you,
- 36:27Speaker 3: you're still developing someone's personality and approach. It's, it's really,
- 36:31Speaker 3: it's good to business all the way.
- 36:34Speaker 2: We started the show today, Gordy talking about the Oregon quarterback,
- 36:38Speaker 2: Dante Moore, who's got to make a decision on, you know,
- 36:41Speaker 2: risking further injury coming back. He's a projected top draft
- 36:45Speaker 2: pick all these things, you know, you got to weigh
- 36:48Speaker 2: in a lot of different factors when you're trying to
- 36:51Speaker 2: get yourself back on the field for any team. And
- 36:55Speaker 2: in the, the recent years for the Utah jazz, as
- 36:58Speaker 2: soon as somebody broke a fingernail, it was like, okay,
- 37:01Speaker 2: we can shut that guy down or we don't have
- 37:03Speaker 2: to rush him back because again, you're not really trying
- 37:06Speaker 2: to win. Now this year you have to manage those
- 37:09Speaker 2: injury situations a lot more carefully and you got to
- 37:13Speaker 2: maximize someone's potential and contributions while also preserving their longevity.
- 37:21Speaker 1: How is a coach? Do you do that?
- 37:22Speaker 2: How is a coach? Do you handle that with players?
- 37:25Speaker 2: How involved does the medical staff have to be here?
- 37:28Speaker 2: Because the Jazz are going to now try to get
- 37:31Speaker 2: guys back on the court as quickly.
- 37:32Speaker 1: As they can.
- 37:34Speaker 7: Yes.
- 37:34Speaker 3: So the first thing is that the coaching staff added
- 37:37Speaker 3: the equation. It's based on a medical team. The doctors
- 37:40Speaker 3: determine and the athletic trainer, they are the key parts
- 37:44Speaker 3: of it, of a player can play or not. And
- 37:47Speaker 3: within that, the trainer, especially, he knows the player's personality well.
- 37:51Speaker 3: and they're innately a pain threshold. Again, certain players can
- 37:56Speaker 3: play through pain. And I'm not saying long-term pain. I
- 38:01Speaker 3: just mean as far as you have a sprained wrist
- 38:04Speaker 3: or different levels of that, obviously. But the trainer knows that,
- 38:09Speaker 3: and they determine if a player is ready to play.
- 38:11Speaker 3: And especially in the playoff games, most guys want to play, absolutely,
- 38:15Speaker 3: in playoff games. But if it hurts them as far
- 38:18Speaker 3: as long-term, they're going to sit them out. So the
- 38:20Speaker 3: doctors decide the coaches have no input in that at all.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Gordy Chiesa is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Talk at all things, basketball coaching, NBA basketball right now.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Also the NBA Gordy is experimenting in this preseason with
- 38:37Speaker 2: smart basketballs and like Apple watches basically for the referees
- 38:43Speaker 2: where they could communicate with the replay center and things
- 38:46Speaker 2: like that. More technology being added into the game of
- 38:50Speaker 2: basketball and, We've already seen in every sport how officials'
- 38:54Speaker 2: jobs can get cleaned up.
- 38:56Speaker 1: They can get calls a little bit more accurate.
- 38:59Speaker 2: The replays make sure that exactly what is supposed to
- 39:02Speaker 2: be called does get called in most cases. And now
- 39:05Speaker 2: the smart basketball, the ball itself providing some data, could eventually,
- 39:11Speaker 2: not this year, but could eventually change that and dial
- 39:15Speaker 2: things in even further. What do you make of these
- 39:18Speaker 2: technological advances in the game of basketball?
- 39:21Speaker 3: I'm all for it, very much. Again, with AI being involved,
- 39:25Speaker 3: to say the least, is that it's the next generation
- 39:28Speaker 3: of it, and it should. So short describing right now,
- 39:30Speaker 3: we're Wilson Sporting Goods, who makes the NBA basketball, and
- 39:35Speaker 3: they're going to have this ball where it's sensory, and
- 39:41Speaker 3: that is able to determine, basically, to help the referee
- 39:45Speaker 3: make a decision. Sean, for example, if the ball is
- 39:49Speaker 3: out of bounds and the ref couldn't see it totally
- 39:52Speaker 3: and he makes the call and suddenly the ball would
- 39:55Speaker 3: tell the referee, who touched the ball to go out
- 39:58Speaker 3: of bounds. And I'm not talking about the last two
- 40:00Speaker 3: minutes of the game where you can go to monitor.
- 40:02Speaker 3: I'm just talking in general about doing it. And so
- 40:04Speaker 3: they have the technology to do that. And also with the,
- 40:08Speaker 3: you mentioned about Apple, it means that the referees have
- 40:10Speaker 3: on their wrist, they can communicate with the replay center
- 40:14Speaker 3: in Seacoast, New Jersey, about scoring changes. Was it a
- 40:18Speaker 3: two-point shot or was it a three-point shot? Was there
- 40:22Speaker 3: a clock malfunction? And was it, uh, reviewable? Some of
- 40:26Speaker 3: the different things, you know, really increase as far as
- 40:29Speaker 3: a takeaway time. So a big factor in the NBA,
- 40:34Speaker 3: the world's perfect showing they like to have, because the
- 40:36Speaker 3: TV purposes have every NBA game finished between two hours
- 40:41Speaker 3: and 10 minutes, two hours and 15 minutes so that
- 40:44Speaker 3: they could have after the game, um, have the star
- 40:48Speaker 3: player on the court interview him a quick, they call
- 40:52Speaker 3: it stand-up, and then the next game starts, let's say,
- 40:55Speaker 3: at 7.30 at night, 5 o'clock back east, 7.30 here in,
- 40:59Speaker 3: let's say, Utah, or 8.30 in the West Coast. So
- 41:02Speaker 3: they want to have the game more concise, and this
- 41:05Speaker 3: helps the referees make better decisions without going a long time.
- 41:09Speaker 3: You've seen it so many times, Sean, where players and
- 41:13Speaker 3: fans say, they keep going to the monitor and they
- 41:15Speaker 3: keep saying, really, really, we make a decision and that
- 41:19Speaker 3: takes away the flow of the game. So they're trying
- 41:21Speaker 3: to make the game much faster, more importantly, accurate based
- 41:24Speaker 3: on technology.
- 41:26Speaker 2: The New York Knicks and Carl Anthony towns have not
- 41:29Speaker 2: come to an agreement on a contract extension. Well, how
- 41:33Speaker 2: is this going to affect him, them, the relationship between them?
- 41:39Speaker 2: I mean, these guys are usually professionals about all this stuff,
- 41:41Speaker 2: but that's a, defending championship team with some high hopes
- 41:46Speaker 2: for this season.
- 41:47Speaker 1: How does this affect things?
- 41:51Speaker 7: It does.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You see what happened with that. Jalen Brunson gave a
- 41:54Speaker 3: hometown discount on his last contract, and that helped him
- 41:58Speaker 3: get the players they needed, meaning they were able to
- 42:03Speaker 3: get OG and Anobi, and it helped them tremendously as
- 42:06Speaker 3: far as them and the NBA.
- 42:08Speaker 7: Okay.
- 42:09Speaker 3: So the question in Knickerbocker basketball and for Carlton Downs' people,
- 42:13Speaker 3: he's a CAA client, is that who blinks first? That
- 42:18Speaker 3: the Knicks offered him a really tremendous contract, but there's
- 42:21Speaker 3: a slight discount of him not getting the max. And
- 42:24Speaker 3: the question is that who's going to give in first? Now,
- 42:30Speaker 3: where the rules are is that Anthony Towns on the contract. Sean,
- 42:36Speaker 3: he makes this year $ 57 million, and next year, $ 27 million,
- 42:40Speaker 3: $ 28 million. He makes $ 51 million with a player option.
- 42:44Speaker 3: So he's eligible for the extension right now. If there's
- 42:47Speaker 3: no terms, if it doesn't come to terms, then this summer,
- 42:52Speaker 3: they can get a do-over again. But the question is,
- 42:55Speaker 3: are there hurt feelings? And those hurt feelings become hard feelings.
- 42:59Speaker 3: And so, again, this is what happens when you have
- 43:02Speaker 3: an elite team Everyone wants to get paid, and from
- 43:05Speaker 3: a management ownership standpoint, they can't do it as far
- 43:08Speaker 3: as the practicality of it, that someone has to not
- 43:11Speaker 3: get paid, they believe, as far as equal value, and
- 43:16Speaker 3: that's where it gets so interesting. And, Sean, that affects
- 43:19Speaker 3: the chemistry of a team. Chemistry is so important in
- 43:23Speaker 3: any professional sport, especially in an intimate locker room of
- 43:28Speaker 3: only 12 people. And if the guy next to you
- 43:31Speaker 3: is dramatically overpaid or dramatically underpaid, it does affect the group.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Even though you have well intentions, it does mentally affect.
- 43:43Speaker 3: You say to yourself, I'm not getting what I'm worth
- 43:46Speaker 3: as far as my value. And then you're a professional athlete.
- 43:49Speaker 3: You only have X amount of years in your career
- 43:51Speaker 3: to make money.
- 43:53Speaker 2: So if you're Carl Anthony Towns, what is the right
- 43:58Speaker 2: number for him? If it's four years, 200 mil, and
- 44:01Speaker 2: they're like, no, that's not enough. He's eligible for a
- 44:05Speaker 2: max contract up to $ 276 billion. You're a guy who
- 44:06Speaker 2: knows everything. All these dynamics that you're talking about, the
- 44:15Speaker 2: danger of overpaying a guy, the danger of underpaying a
- 44:17Speaker 2: guy who helped you win a championship last year and
- 44:20Speaker 2: maybe losing him emotionally.
- 44:21Speaker 1: So what should they pay?
- 44:24Speaker 3: What they offered him. Remember now, he's also age 31
- 44:29Speaker 3: years old. So in his world, this is the last
- 44:32Speaker 3: big contract. In Neckerbocker's world... They're not going to say
- 44:36Speaker 3: it because it doesn't affect Anthony Towns, but it does
- 44:40Speaker 3: as far as negotiation. Josh Hart also is up for
- 44:42Speaker 3: the extension. So the question is they're trying to pay
- 44:45Speaker 3: both guys where they respect their value, but they don't
- 44:51Speaker 3: want to dramatically overpay. And so that's where it gets interesting, Sean.
- 44:56Speaker 3: So the Knicks offered him a fair contract. He wants more.
- 45:01Speaker 3: Who's going to blink first? Part of that also discussion
- 45:04Speaker 3: is Josh Hart, who we know at 6'6, one of
- 45:08Speaker 3: the best players in the NBA as far as rebounding.
- 45:10Speaker 3: He plays much bigger than his height. And that Knicks
- 45:13Speaker 3: would like to have both guys as far as being happy.
- 45:16Speaker 3: They're going to try to navigate that and see if
- 45:20Speaker 3: they can get both of them somewhat happy. But how
- 45:26Speaker 3: they do it is when they do it. Will they
- 45:28Speaker 3: do it during the season before the season starts? Will
- 45:31Speaker 3: they do it next summer? Or will they do it
- 45:33Speaker 3: not at all and take one guy over the other? Again,
- 45:36Speaker 3: it's fascinating. It's way beyond just playing on the court.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Chemistry on the court is one thing, but also chemistry
- 45:42Speaker 3: in the locker room is a factor also. So it
- 45:45Speaker 3: should be interesting how it plays out.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Gordy, what's your list today?
- 45:51Speaker 3: Okay, my list today, Sean, is very segway. Also, as
- 45:54Speaker 3: far as... players, and reliability. So this list today is
- 46:02Speaker 3: the all-time leaders in most consecutive games played. The most
- 46:07Speaker 3: consecutive games played, the all-time leaders. And it has a
- 46:11Speaker 3: Utah-Sean flavor in it. So here we go. Tied number 10,
- 46:18Speaker 3: as far as the all-time consecutive games played, is Jack
- 46:22Speaker 3: Twyman and John Stockton. They played a total of 609
- 46:27Speaker 3: consecutive games. Number nine, former Ute standout Andre Miller played
- 46:33Speaker 3: in 632 consecutive NBA games. And Andre Miller is one
- 46:38Speaker 3: of the most underrated, tremendous players in the last 25
- 46:42Speaker 3: years as far as what he did for his teams
- 46:45Speaker 3: over the year. He had a brilliant 17-year career. Number eight, Sean,
- 46:50Speaker 3: he plays for the Knicks, and Jalen Brunson took a
- 46:54Speaker 3: hometown discount to help the Knickerbockers trade for this guy
- 46:59Speaker 3: from the Brooklyn Nets, Mikkel Bridges. He's never missed a
- 47:03Speaker 3: game in his eight-year NBA career actively. He's played now
- 47:08Speaker 3: in 638 consecutive games. Number seven, his nickname was The
- 47:13Speaker 3: Horse because people used to bounce off him because he
- 47:16Speaker 3: was so strong. Harry the Horse Gallatin, he played back
- 47:20Speaker 3: in the 50s and 60s. 682 consecutive games. Number six,
- 47:25Speaker 3: Bill Lambert, 685. Number five, all-time, Dolph Shays, 706. Number four, all-time,
- 47:34Speaker 3: Michael Cage, 736. Number three, Johnny Redker, 844. Number two
- 47:41Speaker 3: all-time in most consecutive games played in the NBA is
- 47:45Speaker 3: Randy Smith at 906. And the all-time leader in most
- 47:49Speaker 3: consecutive NBA games played over a 15-year period. This guy
- 47:54Speaker 3: didn't miss a game. A.C. Green played in 1,192 games. Quickly,
- 48:02Speaker 3: just some quick side notes. Ron Boone, our colleague and friend,
- 48:07Speaker 3: has a streak of 1,041 consecutive games played, including 662
- 48:14Speaker 3: in the ABA and 379 in the NBA. And the
- 48:20Speaker 3: last point is this. This is the all-time record that
- 48:24Speaker 3: might never be broken by anybody in any sport. That
- 48:28Speaker 3: is Cal Ripken. Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles played
- 48:35Speaker 3: in 2,632 consecutive games from May 30th, 1982. Sean, that's
- 48:40Speaker 3: before you were even born, Sean, you and James Peterson.
- 48:44Speaker 3: And he played through September 19th, 1998. So that's my
- 48:47Speaker 3: list of today.
- 48:51Speaker 7: Gordie.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I agree with you.
- 48:52Speaker 2: I think that might be the most unbreakable record in
- 48:56Speaker 2: professional sports, because I don't think people, I don't think
- 48:59Speaker 2: anyone's even going to try to chase it anymore.
- 49:01Speaker 7: Right?
- 49:01Speaker 1: They're like, nobody wants that record. Nobody wants to just
- 49:06Speaker 1: grind through 16 years of baseball with 162 games played
- 49:12Speaker 1: per season. They're just, they're shutting down voluntarily now, even
- 49:16Speaker 1: if they don't have injuries. So that one is going
- 49:18Speaker 1: to stand until the the earth turns to dust.
- 49:24Speaker 3: I know quarterback could last for longer. The alignment, it's
- 49:29Speaker 3: tough for alignment though.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Really difficult in the game of football. Gordy, you're the man.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Very much.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Always appreciate you, my friend. Thank you.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Thanks, Sean. Peace out.
- 49:40Speaker 2: By the way, Lou Gehrig played 2,130 consecutive games.
- 49:46Speaker 1: They just don't do it. They don't make them like
- 49:48Speaker 1: that anymore.
- 49:48Speaker 7: Kids.
- 49:50Speaker 2: As long as we're on baseball with that transition conversations
- 49:55Speaker 2: with Gordy chains, by the way, brought to you by
- 49:56Speaker 2: friends at Aladdin industries, your Utah V Lux dealer. We'll
- 50:01Speaker 2: have a little bit of fun with the baseball game
- 50:03Speaker 2: last night where the Padres tip and pitches on accident.
- 50:08Speaker 1: We'll discuss.
- 50:08Speaker 2: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
- 50:13Speaker 9: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Are you tipping your pitches in your life at work?
- 50:40Speaker 2: Mason Miller for the San Diego Padres last night maybe
- 50:44Speaker 2: was accidentally cluing the Milwaukee Brewers into whether he was
- 50:48Speaker 2: throwing fastball or breaking ball. And the Brewers allegedly were
- 50:54Speaker 2: able to figure that out by getting a runner on
- 50:57Speaker 2: second base, which of course you're trying to do anyway.
- 50:59Speaker 2: You want runners in scoring position. Christian Yelich with an
- 51:02Speaker 2: incredible stolen base gets the second.
- 51:05Speaker 1: This is in the eighth inning, if I'm not mistaken.
- 51:08Speaker 7: And.
- 51:10Speaker 2: From there on, it got a little bit funky for
- 51:16Speaker 2: Mason Miller, who had had a great day on the mound.
- 51:22Speaker 2: The internet sleuths have been going over this, and there
- 51:26Speaker 2: was a guy who, from the outfield camera view, happened
- 51:31Speaker 2: to notice that if you're behind Mason Miller when he's pitching...
- 51:35Speaker 2: his setup, like the way he's gripping the ball in
- 51:38Speaker 2: his glove when he's pitching out of the stretch, you
- 51:43Speaker 2: can see more of his pitching hand, more of his
- 51:46Speaker 2: pitching wrist out of his glove when he's going to
- 51:49Speaker 2: throw a breaking ball versus when he's going to throw
- 51:52Speaker 2: a fastball. So if you're at second base and you
- 51:56Speaker 2: see some extra wrist, you could theoretically tip the batter
- 52:03Speaker 2: off If you had prearranged signals like teams sometimes do
- 52:10Speaker 2: by grabbing the brim of your hat or maybe grabbing
- 52:15Speaker 2: your own wrist and everyone is trying to figure out
- 52:18Speaker 2: whether or not that is why the pitching got a
- 52:22Speaker 2: little bit weird, a little bit funky for Mason Miller
- 52:26Speaker 2: and puts the Padres down zero two in this series.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Everyone on the Milwaukee brewers seems to be like a
- 52:41Speaker 2: little bit coy about the whole thing. Cause you can't
- 52:44Speaker 2: say too much. This is not a Houston Astros. It's
- 52:48Speaker 2: not a technology kind of a thing, right? This is
- 52:50Speaker 2: not a, you're using cameras and algorithms and figuring out
- 52:54Speaker 2: you're not spy gating this thing. You're getting a runner there.
- 52:57Speaker 2: And then the runner is tipping off the pitches allegedly
- 53:00Speaker 2: to the, the batter to reduce the unpredictability of what
- 53:05Speaker 2: a pitcher is throwing at you. You still have to
- 53:07Speaker 2: hit the ball. You still have to get a good
- 53:10Speaker 2: read on a pitch, whether you should swing on it
- 53:12Speaker 2: or not. Even if you know what pitch is coming,
- 53:14Speaker 2: it's difficult, I'm sure, in Major League Baseball that it pitched.
- 53:17Speaker 2: But how much easier would it be if you knew
- 53:21Speaker 2: what pitch was coming? This is why the Houston Astros
- 53:26Speaker 2: won World Series. There's a lot of rumor and innuendo
- 53:30Speaker 2: that this is actually something that the mid-2010 San Francisco
- 53:34Speaker 2: Giants did.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Also were really good at that.
- 53:41Speaker 2: There was a particular coach in their dugout or in
- 53:43Speaker 2: their bullpen that could read what a pitcher was throwing.
- 53:46Speaker 2: And they had a system allegedly to tip off the
- 53:49Speaker 2: batters to what was coming. I love this type of gamesmanship,
- 53:55Speaker 2: weird stuff in the game of baseball, because again, if
- 53:58Speaker 2: you don't get Yelich into second base and and he's
- 54:02Speaker 2: not able to tip off the pitches, or he's not
- 54:05Speaker 2: able to get the right read, or he gets the
- 54:07Speaker 2: wrong one and tips off the wrong pitch, now are
- 54:09Speaker 2: we talking about it at all? Now do we notice
- 54:11Speaker 2: it at all? Do we notice it even more? Baseball
- 54:15Speaker 2: is wild for all of its strategic advantages, disadvantages, tricks, spycraft, tradecraft.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Baseball more than any other sport.
- 54:31Speaker 2: And in college football, remember, there's rule changes now in
- 54:34Speaker 2: football that disallowed the Connor Stallion situation, the sign reading,
- 54:41Speaker 2: the sign stealing, because you can just radio communicate into
- 54:45Speaker 2: somebody's helmet. Sooner than later, we're going to have accusations
- 54:49Speaker 2: about some team intercepting the communications from the other team.
- 54:54Speaker 2: That will happen. I don't know who's going to do it.
- 54:55Speaker 2: I don't know when it's going to happen, but that
- 54:57Speaker 2: will happen because everyone's trying to fudge the rules, play
- 55:01Speaker 2: with whatever advantage they can find, even if it's borderline
- 55:04Speaker 2: cheating or just flat-out cheating. So a little intrigue, a
- 55:10Speaker 2: little drama in Major League Baseball.
- 55:15Speaker 1: You'll love it.
- 55:16Speaker 2: Hope you're watching some MLB playoffs. Do we have any
- 55:20Speaker 2: games on the station this week, James?
- 55:22Speaker 5: We have a number of games on the station this week,
- 55:25Speaker 5: including tonight after the coaches' show, Padres-Brewers.
- 55:29Speaker 1: This game, this, this series, this exact series. All right.
- 55:33Speaker 1: I like that.
- 55:34Speaker 2: We'll take one last break here in the first hour.
- 55:36Speaker 1: We get to red and blue with Jerem Jordan.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Next on the Sean O'Connell show ESPN 700 and 92
- 55:42Speaker 2: on FM.
- 55:42Speaker 1: My father.
- 55:48Speaker 6: Taught me many things.
- 55:50Speaker 4: You know what they say.
- 55:51Speaker 6: He taught me, keep your friends close. But your enemy's close.
- 55:56Speaker 4: Time to check in on the team down south.
- 55:59Speaker 7: They have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they're blue.
- 56:01Speaker 4: This is the Red and Blue on the Sean O'Connell
- 56:04Speaker 4: Show and Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 56:10Speaker 7: Rooting for Utah. I'm fine with that.
- 56:20Speaker 1: A brand new drop for our next guest. You love
- 56:23Speaker 1: to see it.

- 57:17Speaker 2: check in on the team down south with Jerem Jordan.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Jerem, welcome. How are you, sir?
- 57:27Speaker 7: .
- 57:29Speaker 1: .
- 57:30Speaker 7: .
- 57:34Speaker 1: .
- 57:36Speaker 7: you know, I,
- 57:39Speaker 7: I haven't had too many weird stumbles on BYU TV
- 57:41Speaker 7: over the years, but yeah, trust me. I got, I
- 57:43Speaker 7: got some bowling alley lanes up at times. So it's
- 57:48Speaker 7: all good. Have you guys gotten me good on that one?
- 57:51Speaker 1: Speaker 0 1, you ever been caught on a hot
- 57:52Speaker 1: mic at any time in your career?
- 57:55Speaker 7: I think so. And I say weird things, but not
- 57:58Speaker 7: bad things. So we're, we're good.
- 58:03Speaker 1: All right.
- 58:04Speaker 2: BYU remains undefeated top 10 team in the country again
- 58:09Speaker 2: after Florida was more appropriately ranked this week than they
- 58:13Speaker 2: were in the week previous when BYU was on a
- 58:16Speaker 2: pie and got punished for it. And look, they remain
- 58:19Speaker 2: undefeated in, I would say, not the most beautiful game
- 58:23Speaker 2: that we've seen this BYU team play, but winning ugly
- 58:26Speaker 2: is important. Great teams have to do it at some
- 58:30Speaker 2: point during their season. It felt like this was the
- 58:33Speaker 2: week that BYU had to pull out something kind of
- 58:35Speaker 2: grimy and ugly. in a bad weather game against TCU.
- 58:40Speaker 2: What was your reaction to that game being that close
- 58:43Speaker 2: and I guess some of the offensive woes that BYU experienced?
- 58:48Speaker 7: Yeah, it was good to pull that out because in
- 58:51Speaker 7: the second quarter, I'm sitting there going, okay, everything else
- 58:56Speaker 7: be damned here. You just got to win. It was
- 59:00Speaker 7: way more wet and the weather affected the game more
- 59:04Speaker 7: than I think BYU thought. They thought the rain would
- 59:06Speaker 7: stop by the games game time, but then kind of
- 59:09Speaker 7: just missy and wet the whole time. So BYU had
- 59:12Speaker 7: false starts. They had some grounded snaps. They couldn't kind
- 59:15Speaker 7: of get the run game going. And obviously when LJ
- 59:17Speaker 7: Martin leaves the game, that changes a lot. He's just
- 59:20Speaker 7: so important to what BYU is doing. And then, you know,
- 59:23Speaker 7: both quarterbacks had trouble gripping the ball. And so at
- 59:25Speaker 7: that point, it's like just survive and win. I talked
- 59:28Speaker 7: to Aaron Roderick yesterday for a minute and he said,
- 59:30Speaker 7: every great team that I've been on and he's referring
- 59:33Speaker 7: to Utah and BYU, we had to win at least
- 59:36Speaker 7: one or two of those kinds of games a year.
- 59:38Speaker 7: And that was it for BYU. You also have to
- 59:40Speaker 7: acknowledge that TCU is third best run defense to be
- 59:47Speaker 7: oil faces here. Let's talk about Notre Dame, Utah and TCU,
- 59:50Speaker 7: you know, for BYU to just win the game somehow
- 59:55Speaker 7: that was great because you're on the road and it's,
- 59:58Speaker 7: it's a, you know, an opponent that yes has struggled,
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: but it has a good defense and you don't have
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: your offensive player of the year in the league sitting there.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: He goes out with a, it looked like an ankle injury. Yeah.
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: That's a big deal to win that. I thought that
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: was good. You know, 10 times you always been a
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: top 10 team played an unranked team and won by
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: a one score game, you know? So it happens like
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: it happened three times in 84. I've been three times
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: in 2001. you know, in 2024, BYU is not top 10,
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: but they're, they're top 15, top 20. And they survived
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: against Oklahoma state who stunk that you're like, you just
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: have to figure out ways to win in certain moments.
- 1:00:35Speaker 7: And because BYU has Notre Dame and Utah still sitting there,
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: I don't know that like stop points even matter, like
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: just keep winning. And BYU went up doing the poll.
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: It wasn't like it was a big deal to the voters.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Speaker 4 0 1 Yeah. I, I think the style
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: points thing with the, the new gigantic conferences, And when
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: you have certain teams on your schedule, I think it's
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: an overblown conversation to have. And I know that there
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: were people in, you know, the BYU fan base, a
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: small segment that wanted Kalani to be running up scores
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: and piling things on.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: And it just, it all comes out in the wash.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: I mean, it's a normal reaction to have to, to
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: not running up scores and then to winning a close
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: game against the TCU team that may or may not
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: be great.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: May or may not be good.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Even I agree with you on their defense at the
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: very least, by the way, but, like when Notre Dame's
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: coming to town and when you've got what we think
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: is going to be, you know, a top 10, top
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: 15 matchup against your in-state rival at the end of
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: the day, the college football playoff rankings are going to
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: factor those things in more than this game on the
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: road in wet weather.
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: A hundred percent. And trust me, I would love a
- 1:01:46Speaker 7: style point. That's why Florida jumped 13 spots and then
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: they got smacked and they got, you know, they got put, uh, volatility,
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: but there is a respect for BYU that I don't
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: think they've had because they they've done it for now.
- 1:02:01Speaker 7: A third straight year is like, no, they're good. We
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: acknowledge that they won. You know, people don't know all
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: the details of the LJ got hurt and it was
- 1:02:09Speaker 7: wet and blah, blah, blah. The point is BYU one.
- 1:02:12Speaker 7: And it's, it's, it's good. Winning feels great. And in fact,
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: I talked to one player who, who said Kalani told us,
- 1:02:18Speaker 7: we need to appreciate winning even more like this is hard.
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: Like BYU is getting used to winning, you know, they Hey,
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: we need to celebrate when we win. Like we worked
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: so hard to get to this point. Every win matters
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: and it's so difficult. So yeah. Props to BYU figuring
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: it out.
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:02:32Speaker 7: Was it, was it bear Bachmeier's worst passing game as Cougar?
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: Was it one of his grittiest best rushing games as
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: a Cougar?
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: He ran the ball 15 times, Sean, seven of those
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: were for a first down or a touchdown. So when
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: he touches the ball, things happen. 16-2 as a starter.
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: Dude has not lost to a team not named Texas
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: Tech quite yet.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: That's pretty crazy. So what is the story with L.J.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: Martin?
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Because obviously you've said it every week and it manifested
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: itself again in Dallas-Fort Worth. He is so incredibly important
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: to this Cougars offense. How injured is he?
- 1:03:11Speaker 7: Speaker 3 0 So injured that client stock. I said,
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: he's doubtful for the game Friday. And if I'm BYU,
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: I don't plan. You know, I feel like BYU could
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: be at Iowa state without him and Notre Dame's coming
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: next week. You need to be as healthy as humanly possible.
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: And you always have a little banged up. Isaiah Glasgow,
- 1:03:28Speaker 7: by the way, also not on the depth chart, doubtful,
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: not expected against Iowa state. And then it's TBD moving forward.
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: The seriousness of that injury has not been made publicly yet.
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: Don't expect him against though. You're starting nickel and punt
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: returner to play this Friday. So it is a short week.
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: You always already out without Andrew Gentry and Joni Mala Raider.
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: The Mooney is ahead of schedule. I haven't heard whether
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: he might be available Friday, but there's potential there. If not,
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: hopefully next week against Notre Dame. So yeah, it'd be
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: always a little banged up more than normal for teams
- 1:04:03Speaker 7: at this point. So hopefully they can be as healthy
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: as possible and then Next man up behind Isaiah Glasgow.
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: I think you always had some good play from Jake Clifton,
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: the K state transfer, and then Cialis there will be
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: back against Iowa state. So there's some good news. So there's,
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: there's a lot going on on the injury front right now.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: I was going to ask you about the Sarah thing,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: because this is an Iowa state team that I don't
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: think they can do a lot of things all that well,
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: but Aiden Flora, if you don't have good linebacker play
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: and you don't have good pursuit angles, he can make
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: you pay for that.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Um, What do you make of the matchup?
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Especially when BYU is defenses on the field, trying to
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: stop that.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I would say run game, Speaker.
- 1:04:42Speaker 7: 4 08 and Flora is like the surprise of the league.
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: I think he's been fantastic. He's one of like the
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: four guys that feels like that stayed. Yes. Everyone went
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: to Penn state and it's like, where'd everybody go?
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: I know it's, I know you're joking, but it's like
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: almost that number.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: It's they had, they had like 10 guys stay.
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: It's crazy. And who wouldn't want to go to Penn state?
- 1:05:05Speaker 7: Like all the tradition, like I get clients talking, Hey,
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: they gave him a scholarship right away. And he has,
- 1:05:13Speaker 7: he has, you know, paid that off. Well, Saturday, unbelievable
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: 212 rushing yards on 22 carries three rushing touchdowns. The
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: thing that gets me is the two passing touchdowns. So
- 1:05:24Speaker 7: I watched this game and I go, okay, I know
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: he's going to throw for two. They throw him a
- 1:05:28Speaker 7: quick bubble. He's backwards. He throws a forward touchdown. Like,
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: BYU's run that play against Wisconsin in 2018 to win
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: on the road when they were number six. That was
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: a great play. But the one that got me was
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: kind of the Chris Leak, Tim Tebow thing. So they
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: hand off to Flora. Toss right. He runs, you know,
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: here it comes. Power right.
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: Nope.
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: Just kind of pulls up, throws it over the top, touchdown.
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: He was a high school quarterback. He's also their power turner.
- 1:05:53Speaker 7: He started an FBS at 8.1 yards per carry. He
- 1:05:57Speaker 7: has four punt returns of 50 plus in his career.
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: Most among active players. This dude is like maybe the
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: MVP to his team in the big 12. He's been awesome.
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: And so he's fast too. Like you always got to
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: defend him. Well, I also liked the fact that there's
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: a couple of Utahns coming in from Iowa state, a
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: couple of connections. So first off, Dominic over me, West Jordan,
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: Jaguar wide receiver, leading receiver. That's fun. Isaac Terrell also from,
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: from Lehigh. He's the leading sack man for our state.
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: And then Michael Harper, former BYU safety. He is probably
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: going to start because of an injury drew surge, the
- 1:06:32Speaker 7: strong safety. And so you've got some connections there. I
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: think it's cool. I've always respected Iowa state's program too,
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: as a team that is like consistently to very good
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: and like tough and like all, like all the values
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: are great, like hardworking, nice people. So I, I think
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: it's going to be a fun one Friday night. I,
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: what I fear is that, you know, the margin is
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: closer than we think. I think BYU wins the game
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: with that. If LJ Martin doesn't play, I think BYU
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: at night is money. They've won 14 in a row
- 1:07:00Speaker 7: at night, 5 p.m. or later total. And then 31
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: and five in the last four years at night. BYU
- 1:07:06Speaker 7: is just a great team at night. And then BYU
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: is a double digit favorite. They've won 18 in a
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: row of those kinds of games. So yeah, everything points
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: at BYU being in the right place. Now this could
- 1:07:18Speaker 7: have been a massive trap game, Sean, because Notre Dame's
- 1:07:21Speaker 7: sitting there. They've already announced it on ABC in primetime.
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: You're probably getting Fowler Herbstreet game day, the whole thing.
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: But I think BYU last week was like, okay, we're
- 1:07:29Speaker 7: not so good that we aren't going to be in
- 1:07:31Speaker 7: dogfights here. Um, let's, let's, let's make sure we're humble
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: and ready and hungry and all the stuff that Kalani says.
- 1:07:37Speaker 7: I think though, I think it cannot be a trap
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: game now because of what happened last week.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: I just looked it up because when you mentioned the
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Utah connections on the Iowa state roster, um, I I've
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: said this so many times on my show, but like
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: 20 years ago, when you and I were in high school,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: shout out class of 2002, uh, guys, even the great
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: players in this state, they didn't go far afield. If
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: you went somewhere out of state, you went on the
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: West Coast. I was like, Iowa State didn't recruit guys
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: out of the state of Utah at all when we
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: were in high school. So I was like, okay, let
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: me see if I can find who the first player
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: from the Utah high school ranks. And I don't know
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: if Google's AI overview is all that reliable, but according
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: to the Google search.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: Dominic Overby is the first modern scholarship roster player from
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: a Utah high school on the Iowa state Cyclones roster.
- 1:08:48Speaker 7: you know, Porter Gustin out of
- 1:08:50Speaker 7: Salem Hills getting recruited by everybody, you know, urban Meyer
- 1:08:53Speaker 7: was coming in to look at him for Ohio state
- 1:08:55Speaker 7: and everything. He came to like a Salem Hills basketball
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: game in like January or something. It was like, what
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: the heck? You know, I was tracking the, the plane
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: at Provo and whatnot. I would also like to take
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: this moment regarding high school football to shout out to
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: my guy, Darius Matthews, the head coach at Copper Hills
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: high school, who for just the second time in Copper
- 1:09:14Speaker 7: Hills history beat Bingham over the weekend. who are insured
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: of the first winning season in Copper Hills football history.
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: We have sucked for so long, and this year we're good.
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: I love it. Go Grizzlies.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: I don't know if I could tolerate either of those
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: shout-outs because Copper Hills tragically upset Jordan High when we
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: were seniors the same week that we were all involved
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: in filming an episode of Touched by an Angel, which
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: was very awkward.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: And then let me tell you something.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: When you're a high school football player and you're supposed
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: to beat a team and then you lose to that team.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: And then you have to go see that team again
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: on Saturday night after you lost on Friday night.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Cause you're getting paid awkward.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: You're getting paid $ 75 to be part of a touch
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: by an angel episode.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: That is not worth it. Okay. That sucked so bad.
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah, that was gnarly. I remember, I think I
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: told the story, but I'll tell it again. They have
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: all this equipment on the track for the Touched by
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: an Angel crew. And I am at this point learning
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: how to shoot and edit footage. I know I want
- 1:10:30Speaker 7: to get in the industry and blah, blah, blah. I'm
- 1:10:32Speaker 7: doing a little five-minute segment every other day on what
- 1:10:34Speaker 7: they called Channel One back in the day, kind of
- 1:10:37Speaker 7: on our school news. I'm taking a class. It's so fun.
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: I'm like, this is great, this is great. My viewfinder
- 1:10:44Speaker 7: is on the right side. So I'm kind of blind
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: when I'm shooting to the right. I start walking on
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: the track where all that equipment is in front of
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: the whole student body. They're going crazy. I run into
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: the stuff on the track, fall over in front of
- 1:10:55Speaker 7: everyone and just make something out of myself. And that
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: was very embarrassing. Oh, but you know what? Tony Saunders,
- 1:11:03Speaker 7: our star receiver that year. He was awesome.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Not as embarrassing as losing the copper Hills. I'll tell
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: you that. Jerem Jordan is our guest here on a
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: little red and blue.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: So I was state decent at least TCU question mark, BYU.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Good Texas tech. Good. Utah.
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: Good.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Baylor question, Mark, what are we, how should we be
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: talking about the Baylor bears who are surprising four in
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: one team right now in the conference?
- 1:11:47Speaker 7: like they're four and one in their one losses to
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: Auburn where on a two point conversion, they didn't lead
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: the receiver. Like we didn't, if he leads them, they
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: win their five and only they might be ranked right now.
- 1:11:59Speaker 7: Their defense has really shut teams down. That's like the
- 1:12:02Speaker 7: strength of the team cutter. Bully has looked nice in
- 1:12:06Speaker 7: the first half against a and M, but then now
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: we know a and M stinks, you know, they beat
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: Kansas and London. in, but like that Arizona state does.
- 1:12:13Speaker 7: But yeah, that, that, that was a surprise. There's, there's
- 1:12:16Speaker 7: a lot of parody past the kind of top five there.
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: Cause it's kind of who's playing for kind of that six, seven,
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: eight spot. Cause Houston, Oklahoma state and the big three,
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: as you mentioned, BYU, Texas tech, they feel like the
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: top five, like there's a line there. but maybe not.
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: I mean, Baylor's coming to Provo in November. That's something
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: to be aware of. And if Lagway plays well, they've
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: got a chance of that defense. So that was, that
- 1:12:40Speaker 7: was very interesting over the weekend.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, Baylor's schedule, by the way, not really
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: friendly at the back half, Iowa state, BYU, Texas tech, Houston,
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: all to finish.
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:12:52Speaker 7: Better get some wins now. Cause you're losing at least
- 1:12:55Speaker 7: two of those Well, the final three, I mean, any,
- 1:12:58Speaker 7: even if BYU and Utah were playing that last three,
- 1:13:00Speaker 7: it'd be like, there's a loss or two in there
- 1:13:02Speaker 7: for almost anybody.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Well, this, this is also interesting for me because, you know,
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: obviously everyone here in state has November 7th circled for
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: obvious reasons, but Utah plays Arizona the next week. That
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: is not a roll your helmet out and get a
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: win type game. And now BYU plays Baylor the next week.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: So like both of these coaching staffs, are going to
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: have to make sure that you don't just empty the
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: gas tank in a rivalry game and then not be
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: ready to play next week because you got real competition,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: at least as we can tell so far in the
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: game after the.
- 1:13:38Speaker 7: Game, Speaker 4, there was a stat last year that
- 1:13:42Speaker 7: they showed. I can't remember what it was exactly, but
- 1:13:44Speaker 7: after the BYU Utah game, both BYU and Utah had
- 1:13:47Speaker 7: tended to struggle the last couple of years, both won
- 1:13:49Speaker 7: last year for the first time in a while.
- 1:13:52Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:13:52Speaker 7: There, there was a physicality and a certain emotion that
- 1:13:56Speaker 7: was depleting those teams. So yeah, I don't know that
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: the league is like, it's probably deep, but it's very
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: wide as Reese Davis described it last year. Yeah. There's
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: not a lot of gimme's we thought preseason, Hey, Iowa state,
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: everybody left. Oh, you're always going to win that one
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: by a million. No, they're better than you think. I
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: still think BYU wins and covers, but it's going to be,
- 1:14:18Speaker 7: there's more resistance there than you thought. And you got
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: to be aware, like BYU is one muffed pond or,
- 1:14:24Speaker 7: you know, turnover away from maybe losing the game against TCU.
- 1:14:28Speaker 7: It's great that they figured it out and won because
- 1:14:30Speaker 7: sometimes it just gets a little messy and that, you know,
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: there will be tougher schedules for both BYU and Utah
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: that kind of show what they're made of at this point.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7th, Houston is such a wild card for
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: me in this whole scenario right now, because there's these
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: parallel races. I was talking about this yesterday.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: These, these, these parallel races for on paper, at least
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: the two spots in the big 12 championship game where
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Utah and BYU play one another. They don't play Texas
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: tech or Oklahoma state, Texas tech and Oklahoma state do
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: play one another. So it's kind of like on paper,
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: the winner of the BYU Utah game, in control for
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: the one spot, the winner of the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State game,
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: in control for the other spot. But then Houston has crossover.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Houston plays a bunch of these other teams where there's
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: no crossover in the top four outside of that. When
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: we look at this Houston team, and we talked about
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: them in the preseason as being a factor, have your
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: thoughts on them changed? Have they developed? Have they grown?
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Are you more scared, less scared for Houston and what
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: they can be?
- 1:15:36Speaker 7: They are interesting, right? And regarding scheduling, they play Oklahoma
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: state coming up next week and then at Utah. So
- 1:15:43Speaker 7: those two weeks will really decide whether they're going to
- 1:15:46Speaker 7: be a contender or not in the league. They had
- 1:15:48Speaker 7: a weird game Saturday where they were done 17, nothing
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: to UCF. And then they scored 27 on the answer
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: to win. So you like credit them for the comeback,
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: but you're also like, why are you down 17, nothing
- 1:15:58Speaker 7: in the game? I don't know. They should be credited
- 1:16:00Speaker 7: with 24 and one, the one loss by two at
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: Texas tech on a, on a Friday night, like Houston's good.
- 1:16:06Speaker 7: How good is the question? This is the year where
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: I wish we could have semi-finals in the league to
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: get into the title game is, could you imagine like that?
- 1:16:16Speaker 7: Cause there, it feels like there are five teams that
- 1:16:18Speaker 7: could win late this year. Last year was like, yep. know, there,
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: there are three good teams, Texas tech, clearly a notch above.
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: And then it's BYU and Utah that are right there. If,
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: if we somehow had like a conference semifinal, can you
- 1:16:32Speaker 7: imagine that'd be awesome? Like one of the Houston or
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: Oklahoma state or something is the five seed and they're
- 1:16:37Speaker 7: left out and you have You have a couple of
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: fun matches just to get into that game. Obviously it's
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: not going to happen and it would not work. We're
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: going to expand the playoff probably to 24 and then
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: the conference title games are somewhat meaningless at that point.
- 1:16:49Speaker 7: But Houston's an enigma still, we need to see what
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: they can do again. Like K state this week, K
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: state's played nobody. And then they lost the Cincy and
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: it's kind of been weird. They're better than we thought,
- 1:17:02Speaker 7: but they're not that good. So yeah, it's, it's feels
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: like a five horse race right now, but you know,
- 1:17:07Speaker 7: who knows? them pretty good. Arizona only has one loft
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: to BYU, but they play a really tough schedule. So yeah, the,
- 1:17:19Speaker 7: the expansive league makes it difficult. Like the old big 12,
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: where everyone played everybody, you can really figure out who
- 1:17:26Speaker 7: the best team was, but I'm not going to complain
- 1:17:28Speaker 7: too much. BYU wouldn't be in the league without this expansion.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean, it's, it's better to have it
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: be expanded. How hot is the seat of Dion Sanders
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: in Boulder right now in your mind?
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: It's a good question. Cause do you have the, my
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: immediate response to this for everybody, like Dabo at Clemson and,
- 1:17:48Speaker 7: you know, Lincoln Riley at USC and everybody's like, do
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: you actually want to buy out that much? You know,
- 1:17:53Speaker 7: I don't know what his buyout is, but he, he's
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: such a, a polarizing figure in a lot of ways. Like,
- 1:18:00Speaker 7: do you think you can do B do better? Like you,
- 1:18:03Speaker 7: you want to break up right now? Like what, what
- 1:18:05Speaker 7: are we talking about? I do think it is warm
- 1:18:07Speaker 7: because they are not headed in a good direction and
- 1:18:10Speaker 7: And you had the one good year, but it's when
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: you brought, you know, your son and Travis Hunter over
- 1:18:16Speaker 7: from Jackson state. And obviously winning a Heisman is like
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: one of the coolest, even team things that you can do,
- 1:18:21Speaker 7: you know, and Shador was, was a good college quarterback.
- 1:18:24Speaker 7: So yeah, I, it doesn't look good over there. I
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: wonder what they want to do and if they want
- 1:18:30Speaker 7: to give it another year or not, they don't really
- 1:18:32Speaker 7: recruit and a high school kid. So you're kind of
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: wondering outside of Juju Lewis, like you're wondering how How
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: developed are they? Are they going to make that? They
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: lost some notable guys in the portal, like Jordan seat
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: and the left tackle went to LSU and then a
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: DJ McKinney's at Notre Dame. We're going to see him
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: next week, a cornerback. So yeah, that's a good question.
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: Does feel warm. It feels like it's getting warmer.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Jay Hill, Colorado Buffalo's head coach question mark.
- 1:19:02Speaker 7: Oh man. Tough for those guys.
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: They're going through it. It's it's, hard to jump into
- 1:19:08Speaker 7: a blue blood and just have it just work. Right.
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: Obviously you need good quarterback play a little brown jug.
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: Didn't go the way of the Michigan Wolverine. So yeah,
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: that's interesting. Cause you know, the hope is you had
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: great success, great success and you know, keeps Kalani forever. Uh,
- 1:19:25Speaker 7: the reality is there will be teams that come calling, uh,
- 1:19:28Speaker 7: you know, USC, it's been pretty public that USC had
- 1:19:31Speaker 7: some interest in Kalani, but plenty ever left, you know,
- 1:19:34Speaker 7: kind of your, your next guy is probably Jay Hill,
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: given how close he was. Right. And how successful he
- 1:19:39Speaker 7: was in DC. I don't know what that looks like
- 1:19:41Speaker 7: for him, but the hope is that you have Kalani forever.
- 1:19:43Speaker 7: And it's not a thing. have to address anytime soon,
- 1:19:46Speaker 7: but certainly it'd be naive not to, not to at
- 1:19:48Speaker 7: least be ready and, or think about it. So hopefully
- 1:19:50Speaker 7: plenty is here forever, man. He, he joked in his
- 1:19:53Speaker 7: early days on the coaches show that he was the pot.
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: He wanted to be the Polynesian Lavelle. He is absolutely
- 1:19:59Speaker 7: the Polynesian Lavelle, even after only 11 years, like keep
- 1:20:03Speaker 7: this guy going culturally perfectly aligned with what BYU is
- 1:20:07Speaker 7: and wants to be. So let's keep this going, man.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: They know that, right?
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: I mean, BYU knows that at every level now.
- 1:20:15Speaker 7: I would hope so. And I feel so.
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: I think so too.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: I think that's, that's the sense I get, but obviously
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: you're a lot closer to it than I am. And
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: you know, it's fine to have these like scares and
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: minor soap opera moments, I think with a coach and
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: an athletic director and a department and a university and
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: whatever else. But like, if you, if you let that
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: guy walk, yikes in my, is my opinion.
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: Yeah. Right. I would hope that he would be here forever.
- 1:20:43Speaker 7: I just think he's so aligned with the unique mission
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: of BYU in all its facets. Like he takes the
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: high road. He's such a good dude. There's not a
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: dude that doesn't like Kalani right in the industry. So yeah, amen.
- 1:20:57Speaker 7: And BYU is winning at a clip they never have
- 1:20:59Speaker 7: at this level. Like this is a golden era of
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: BYU football. I don't want it to end. BYU just
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: BYU just had its best modern, you know, and I
- 1:21:06Speaker 7: guess ever recruiting class ever. Several of these guys are
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: on missions, you know, so the next couple of years
- 1:21:11Speaker 7: is set up really nicely. BYU is in a great
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: spot in terms of like, they don't have to replace
- 1:21:16Speaker 7: a ton of dudes every year with portal guys. They
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: can be very specific and calculated and intentional. And so
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: hopefully that, that continues, man. It's going great. BYU is,
- 1:21:27Speaker 7: as relevant as they've ever been. And they're about to
- 1:21:29Speaker 7: have one of the most relevant moments in program history
- 1:21:32Speaker 7: next week when we think college game day will be
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: here for BYU-Notre Dame, man.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: Does the Iowa State game have anything to do with
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: that in your mind? Or are they coming? Because, I mean,
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: BYU's going to be a ranked team no matter what.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: Notre Dame's going to be a ranked team no matter what.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: But does the result on Friday night affect how big
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: this game is for the television networks?
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: Yes, I think it does. I think it'd be why
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: you lost that. They might not come. I think if they,
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: if Notre Dame max Stanford and BYU beats Iowa state,
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: I think, I think there'll be here as Reese Davis
- 1:22:08Speaker 7: said last week, said there's a good chance, but there, yeah,
- 1:22:11Speaker 7: there are some other interesting games that they wanted to,
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: but Ohio state, Indiana, you know, beginning kickoff already said
- 1:22:17Speaker 7: they're going to that one. You know, you, you've already
- 1:22:19Speaker 7: done LSU it's Mississippi state, like, you know, Alabama, Tennessee,
- 1:22:24Speaker 7: they've already already went to Tennessee, you know, for Texas, Tennessee.
- 1:22:28Speaker 7: So it is pretty intriguing, Missouri, Ole miss, you've already
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: been to Ole miss. So it, you know, you bring
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: up a good point. Would they come anyway? Like even
- 1:22:35Speaker 7: if they're like 14th or 12th or something, it'd still
- 1:22:38Speaker 7: be a pretty good matchup, but I don't think it's
- 1:22:41Speaker 7: something they have to worry about. And BYU is going
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: to have to exercise some demons by the way, not
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: because you always own for when game, game. It was
- 1:22:53Speaker 7: TCU 09. BYU lost it where game day was. And
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: then they've had three road games historically. It's 04 Utah,
- 1:23:02Speaker 7: if I recall. And then 2020 Coastal Carolina, which is
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: weird in so many ways. And then last year at
- 1:23:08Speaker 7: Texas Tech in the regular season.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: Who's printing the Catholics versus Mormons t-shirts this year? Do
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: we know? Where are they going to sell those things?
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: That's a good question. Who's jumping all over that one?
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: It's like the other one needs to print out the
- 1:23:25Speaker 7: full name of the church, you know, to appease the church. Like, Hey, now,
- 1:23:30Speaker 7: now everyone's appeased.
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Jerem, always appreciate your time. Enjoy the game on Friday

- 1:24:46Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: Time for the Daily Dump, brought to you every single
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: day by Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling. excavation they've got a
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: little bit of everything for you the brains behind the
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: operation rob joins us here in studio every once in
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: a while he's here again today rob how are you.
- 1:25:07Speaker 10: I'm doing fantastic i wish i was the brains i'm
- 1:25:10Speaker 10: more of the bronze but you know yeah they always
- 1:25:14Speaker 10: say hire somebody smarter than you that's everybody all right
- 1:25:17Speaker 10: we're good.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Well he could be the muscle behind the operation then Uh, you're,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: you're coming off of your first, like your first real
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: season of HVAC, right? Valley plumbing, the truck with the
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: duck reliable for decades. We've known it. And then you
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: decided to jump into the HVAC world this summer.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: And how's it been?
- 1:25:37Speaker 11: That's been quite a ride.
- 1:25:38Speaker 10: Um, you know, with, with plumbing, it's very consistent, uh,
- 1:25:41Speaker 10: little ups, little downs, and it's just very consistent with HVAC. Um,
- 1:25:47Speaker 10: you know, you don't get a lot of calls this
- 1:25:49Speaker 10: time of year when it's nice outside. You open the door,
- 1:25:52Speaker 10: you close the door, everything's fine. But you get a
- 1:25:55Speaker 10: good 75% of your work all within a few months
- 1:25:59Speaker 10: in the hottest time.
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: Of the year.
- 1:26:00Speaker 10: So you get ready and then all of a sudden
- 1:26:04Speaker 10: it's just slammed. And then all of a sudden right
- 1:26:07Speaker 10: now it's quiet because there's not a lot going on.
- 1:26:12Speaker 10: It's just something completely different than the plumbing. So it's
- 1:26:15Speaker 10: been interesting to learn the difference between the plumbing and
- 1:26:19Speaker 10: the HVAC and it's been interesting.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of good news for our listeners because
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: if you, if you need something done with your HVAC
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: right now, Valley plumbing is not hustling so hard.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: They're not behind.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Now's a good time to make that phone call and
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: be like, all right, this air conditioner might be on
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: its last legs. My furnace might need a little bit
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: of work. Maybe I got to get the whole system
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: looked at, overhauled, vents cleaned, whatever, but Now's a good
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: time to make a phone call.
- 1:26:46Speaker 10: You know, and it's not just us. It's pretty much
- 1:26:49Speaker 10: the entire industry. And that's why this time of year
- 1:26:52Speaker 10: you hear so many big specials going on, whether it's
- 1:26:55Speaker 10: a free furnace, whether it's a free upgrade, things like that,
- 1:26:58Speaker 10: because even the manufacturers know how it works. And so
- 1:27:02Speaker 10: they promote. They give really good deals this time of year.
- 1:27:08Speaker 10: And so, of course, we're following suit and doing the
- 1:27:11Speaker 10: same thing.
- 1:27:11Speaker 11: We're giving away.
- 1:27:12Speaker 10: Free furnaces with an AC system purchase. We're doing the
- 1:27:18Speaker 10: free upgrade to a heat pump system if you buy
- 1:27:22Speaker 10: a standard system. And that helps with the manufacturer taking
- 1:27:27Speaker 10: care of that as well.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: So now's a really good time if you're looking to
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: change some things, to upgrade some things. And obviously, if
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: you have any plumbing issues at all, Valley Plumbing can
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: take care of those.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: This time of year also, right? We're approaching, within the
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: next month, we're.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Going to be talking about sprinkler pipes freezing, stopping waste
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: valve issues, things like that. And you probably want to
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: get this phone number and get the Valley Plumbing in
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: your brain because when that stuff happens, it's not DIY.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: You need someone who knows a little bit about excavation,
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: who knows how to handle the serious plumbing stuff to
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: come out.
- 1:28:04Speaker 10: You better take care of it now rather than later.
- 1:28:07Speaker 10: First time it snows and it's three feet of snow
- 1:28:10Speaker 10: in your front yard and you realize you have a problem.
- 1:28:12Speaker 10: You know, you get to take care of now. You
- 1:28:14Speaker 10: make sure your system is winterized. You make sure your
- 1:28:17Speaker 10: hoses are disconnected from your hose bib that's coming out
- 1:28:20Speaker 10: of your house. Things like that so you don't end
- 1:28:23Speaker 10: up with a flood. You don't end up with an emergency.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: And if you do, there's only one place to go.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Look for the truck with the duck, 801-341-4222, valleyplumbing.com. You
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: can make an appointment on the chat feature. You don't
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: even have to pick up the phone. I wanted to,
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: there's a sports story. I wanted to run by you
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: because that's what we do in the Daily Dump. We
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: give out the random sports stories. And this one, I'm
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: a little outraged over, but it also is relevant here
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: because you're in an AI-proof business as far as we
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: can tell.
- 1:28:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: It's going to be a long, long, long, long time
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: before robots are showing up at the house to fix
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: the air conditioner.
- 1:28:57Speaker 11: Yes, that is correct.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Washington State University, of course, used to be in the
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: Pac-12 alongside the Utes. Washington state university has announced that
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: they're partnering with a company called fan word, which is
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: an AI company. Uh, they're going to create their game recaps,
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: feature stories, player bios, and other editorial content is the
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: way that they worded it. So the sports writing that's
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: coming out of Washington state university, who by the way,
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: has their own school of journalism and broadcasting is now
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: going to be done by by fan word, by AI.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: This is, if you're in the sports industry like me,
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: it's aggravating. It's also a little bit terrifying.
- 1:29:38Speaker 10: Well, the hard part is you don't know what's real
- 1:29:41Speaker 10: and what's AI. AI, you know, it does an amazing thing,
- 1:29:44Speaker 10: but you can never use AI for a finished product,
- 1:29:47Speaker 10: you know, because you have AI create something for you
- 1:29:49Speaker 10: and you look at it and you look at it
- 1:29:51Speaker 10: carefully and you'll notice that the picture has somebody holding
- 1:29:54Speaker 10: something that you're like, What.
- 1:29:57Speaker 11: Even is that?
- 1:29:57Speaker 10: And little details like that.
- 1:30:00Speaker 11: It'll be interesting to see how this works.
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really crazy.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: That's the latest out of Washington State University, and they're
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: being appropriately lambasted for it.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: Everyone is just like, what are you doing? You cannot,
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: first of all....
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: The inaccuracies that you're talking about, we just experienced that
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: on the show today.
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: Because we were talking with Jerem Jordan, and we were
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: talking about Iowa State's roster and how now they have
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: some Utahns on Iowa State's roster, which when you and
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: I were growing up was never the case.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: No.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: They were not recruiting guys out of the state of Utah.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: So I was like, you know what? I'm going to Google.
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: I'm going to figure out when the first Utahn ended
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: up on that roster. And according to the AI overview
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: that it spits out, It was someone from this year's team.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: I was like, oh, wow, this recently happened. Well, James
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: did the actual legwork, and he went back and looked
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: at the Iowa State rosters. And in the mid-2000s, you
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: had guys from Utah. So you can't trust, for sports especially,
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: you can't trust AI. If you're using it in your
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: company and it's working for you, great. But if you're
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: looking for sports information, don't rely on fan word.
- 1:31:05Speaker 10: No, because you don't know what kind of parameters it's
- 1:31:07Speaker 10: looking at. You have no idea until it's wrong.
- 1:31:11Speaker 7: None.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: And, I mean, to bring it back to Valley Plumbing, right,
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: like the trades and all of that, like you guys
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: are in a really good spot.
- 1:31:21Speaker 10: I mean, we use AI every single day in the trades,
- 1:31:24Speaker 10: but not to actually do the actual work. You know,
- 1:31:28Speaker 10: that's requiring us to go out and physically do the work. Now,
- 1:31:32Speaker 10: of course, if we can't figure out a problem that
- 1:31:34Speaker 10: something– That we've never seen before. Of course, we're going
- 1:31:37Speaker 10: to we're going to look into it. We're going to
- 1:31:39Speaker 10: ask questions. We're going to look at chat GPT. We're
- 1:31:41Speaker 10: going to look at things like that and see what
- 1:31:44Speaker 10: it says.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: And then.
- 1:31:46Speaker 11: Figure out, is this real? Is it going to work?
- 1:31:48Speaker 11: Is this legitimate?
- 1:31:49Speaker 10: Or is this just some crazy person that said something
- 1:31:52Speaker 10: online that AI picked up?
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: Yeah, there is some of that also.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: All right, so final word for our listeners who've been
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: hearing about the Daily Dump and looking for the truck
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: with the duck. You've got plumbing. You've got HVAC. You've
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: got excavation. You really can help out with just about everything.
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: Why should they call you? You know, give us a call.
- 1:32:09Speaker 10: We are literally one of the last actual family-owned companies here. Now,
- 1:32:15Speaker 10: everybody says family-owned, but it's whose family, how many tens
- 1:32:18Speaker 10: of thousands of families that have money in.
- 1:32:22Speaker 11: This private equity firm. That is not us. We are here.
- 1:32:26Speaker 10: My family is raised here. My kids go to school here.
- 1:32:29Speaker 10: I'm a real person, not AI.
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: We're here.
- 1:32:32Speaker 11: We care about our community. We're here to help.
- 1:32:35Speaker 10: We're not just here to make a quick buck and
- 1:32:37Speaker 10: sell off to another investment company. We are here for
- 1:32:40Speaker 10: the long run, and.
- 1:32:41Speaker 11: This is what we love. We love Utah. We love
- 1:32:43Speaker 11: what we do. And we're here. Whenever you need us,
- 1:32:47Speaker 11: we are here.
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: By the way, over 3,000 reviews right now, averaging 4.8 stars.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: So pretty darn good. You don't even have to take
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: my word for it or Rob's word for it. People
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: who've actually dealt with Valley Plumbing, which I have, and
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: they fixed a leaky pump for me in like two hours.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: It was fantastic. On a Friday afternoon to boot.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: So 801-341-4222. Go to valleyplumbing.com. Hit the chat feature. Make
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: an appointment that way. You don't even have to pick
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: up the phone. They'll come out. They'll give you a
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: free quote. They'll let you know. when they can get
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: it done, how they can get it done, and how
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: much it's going to cost you, no hidden fees or
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: anything like that.
- 1:33:29Speaker 11: We look forward to hearing from you.
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Lots more to get to here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: Don't go anywhere. Jeff Schwartz joins us in about 13 minutes.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: Thanks for coming in, Rob. ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz joins us in about eight minutes here to
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: talk all things football pro and college. There's some interesting
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: stats out there on NFL referees and how much they're
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: meddling with games, especially in important scenarios, fourth quarter scenarios,
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: scoring plays, things like that. So we'll get to that
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: with Jeff Schwartz and much more. We'll ask him the
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: question we asked at the top of the show about
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: Dante Moore and whether or not he's got to make
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: some type of executive decision for himself on continuing to
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: play after the concussion and his draft status being up
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: in the air.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: That's coming. We didn't really get to a ton of
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: the Daily Dump stories.
- 1:35:13Speaker 7: This is.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: We don't discuss tennis all that much. Coco Gauff, who is,
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: of course, an American tennis star and has done some
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: really incredible things on the women's tennis tour, is kind
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: of like the next, the natural progression of American superstar
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: after Venus and Serena Williams on the women's side of things.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: And she's already.
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: firmly established as one of the best women's tennis players
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: in the world as a, an incredibly marketable star as
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: somebody with a ton of endorsement deals, a great spokesperson.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: And she had a situation.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: In a tournament in the China open where she's playing
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: a young woman. Who's of Chinese descent, a teenager on
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: the rise, the next Coco golf, like the Chinese version
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: of Coco golf.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: And she, There was a single point played a.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: Single point where there's video boards, advertising boards in the
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: arena that while play is happening, they they're right behind
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: the players.
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: So they have to be off.
- 1:36:26Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: And this is now a thing in all of tennis everywhere.
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: These tournaments have led boards, digital advertising boards, and the
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: way that they keep them from interfering with the plan,
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: the tennis being played and people's ability to see the ball,
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: kind of like a batter's eye. They keep it off
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: while gameplay is actually happening. And then between points, you
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: can flash your Rolex or your whatever advertisement. Well, during
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: a point during play, the video boards flashed on, they
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: turned on and Coco golf, pulled up and basically stopped
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: playing the point because of that, which is, it's going
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: to be a disqualified point anyway.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: And her opponent ends up winning the point.
- 1:37:14Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: So Coco stops playing return comes. All right. Well, that
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: one doesn't count.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: Unfortunately, it became kind of an inflection point in the
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: match where then after that, It looked like Coco kind
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: of really seized the momentum and ended up winning the match, which.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: She was the favorite anyway. But it was in China,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: and this was a Chinese tennis player.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: So, of course, the local fans were really bothered by
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: this whole scenario. And this is something that we don't
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: have to deal with. I've never had to deal with.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: You hear about it in Sports like tennis, you hear
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: about it in sports like golf. You hear it about
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: it all over the world now.
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: It's not just in the United States.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: We often have these conversations about how race relations need
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: to improve here in the United States of America. And
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: Coco took to Twitter shortly after this match and after
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: the minor controversy, like it's a nothing burger. She was
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: probably going to beat this teenager anyway, who's at the
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: very beginning of a big time career. They talked about
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: it at the net. Coco apologized for the confusion. The,
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: her opponent apologized for the issue and they're totally fine
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: with it.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: But Coco golf then.
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: Gets back on social media and just is inundated with
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: with some of the most horrific racial, racially charged, like
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: slurs and abuse, verbal abuse.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: I guess it's not verbal. If you're reading it, whatever that's.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: Called, just brutal stuff because of a one point, a
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: 16 year old, her name is soon. She ran and
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: she beat her yesterday at the China open.
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: Hey, little controversy.
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: Because of a single point. And now you've got these
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: op-ed pieces on it. Like this, how about this headline
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: from Yahoo sports? Cocoa golf didn't cheat, but tennis made
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: it look like she did. And now she's being villainized
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: and on social media, especially, and from the, the Chinese
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: fan base, especially One of the biggest stars in tennis
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: is like, I don't want to deal with this anymore.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: I'm not, if you want to disagree with what happened, she,
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: her statement effectively was if you, if you want to deal,
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: if you want to disagree with how things happened, that's fine,
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: but you don't have to be racist about it. Imagine
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: being the star that she is and then having to
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: open your social media and and see all that stuff
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: just because of a point taken away from an opponent
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: on a technicality because whoever's operating the video boards handled
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: it wrong.
- 1:40:17Speaker 7: Crazy.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: Her quote was this.
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: Hey, everyone, you can dislike me or disagree about what
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: happened without being racist. The amount of racist comments DMs
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: I've received in the last few hours is insane.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: Lastly, I'm not a cheater or a thief. Crazy stuff.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: In the world of tennis.
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: I'm watching the point right now.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: And to be fair, like.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: The switch of the video boards does not seem to
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: me like it would be something that would distract from
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: one's actual ability to compete, but she does pull up
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: and stop having seen it.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: So I guess it did distract her enough.
- 1:41:03Speaker 7: Crazy. Crazy.
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: The flickering of the video boards constituted a hindrance to
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: her ability to play according to the chair umpire on
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: a video review.
- 1:41:14Speaker 5: Oh, see, we know that golf golfers and tennis players
- 1:41:19Speaker 5: in particular are next level sensitive to anything that might
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: be distracting them while they're in play. It's the reason
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: why you hear the chair umpire say, quiet, please, quiet, please.
- 1:41:32Speaker 5: Whenever there's any, whenever someone's like coughing. but as they're
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: about to start the next point. So this doesn't surprise me,
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: even though you're watching it, like an average person would
- 1:41:45Speaker 5: watch it, not a tennis player and going, Oh, that
- 1:41:47Speaker 5: doesn't seem that distracting. It doesn't surprise me that tennis
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: deems that very distracting.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: And Coco's, this is the last port Coco also mentioned.
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: I think it's weird.
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: I'm getting hate for following the rules. She is following
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: the rules, like the rules of tennis. Have this in
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: there for anything that could be a distraction, like somebody
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: yelling in your backswing, somebody talking during your service, somebody
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: like a piece of paper blowing onto the court from
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: somebody's a literal rapper in dropping.
- 1:42:23Speaker 5: Sometimes it seems like, look, I. And I'm kind of
- 1:42:27Speaker 5: making fun of it, but also I get it. There's
- 1:42:30Speaker 5: different etiquette rules for every sport. And tennis, it just
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: happens to be a lot more strict etiquette rules when
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: it comes to noise and distractions.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: Here's a flex for you again. I did go to
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: Wimbledon this last summer. Oh, did you really? I haven't
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: heard you say that before.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: I don't know if I've said anything on air about
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: how I went to Wimbledon and was watching tennis. So
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: jealous of you. Next to the Royal Box. But here's
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: the thing. We're at Wimbledon and it was during the
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: men's match that we were watching. Um, you have demonstrative
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: players occasionally that are trying to get a little bit
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: of reaction from the crowd after a point. And, uh, that,
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: that started to develop in this men's match and the
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: chair umpire was like fighting against it. because of the,
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: because the etiquette thing, because he's like, he's like, you know,
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: he's like, it was a Baratini.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: He's just like, oh yeah, come on. Like after a
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: big point, come on, come on. Baratini, good player. And
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: people are just like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's,
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: you know, then it's his serve again and he's bouncing
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: the ball. He's getting ready to serve and people are like, yeah,
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: let's go, let's go, let's go. And the chair umpire
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: is going like quiet. quiet. And they w they got
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: over the quiet, please. Then just like silence. I was like, okay,
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: let's go. It got progressively less polite. Yes, it was great.
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: And you know, it was funny because it was, the
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: players were like egging it on. They were goading this,
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: but the chair umpire was like, this is a violation
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: of etiquette.
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: Be quiet.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: Speaker 0 5th.
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: It's it is funny when, when that happens, cause you
- 1:44:17Speaker 5: get players that try to get the crowd on their side,
- 1:44:20Speaker 5: especially after a big point like that.
- 1:44:23Speaker 7: Right?
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: Um, but the chair umpire has to be like, okay, fine. You,
- 1:44:29Speaker 5: you did that, but also like, we got to make
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: sure it's deathly quiet before the next serve or else
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: you guys are going to screw up because of the noise.
- 1:44:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: It's a funny situation. Uh, you know, we're going to
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: take a break here. We're going to get to Jeff
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: Schwartz next. He's the kind of person that the chair
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: umpire would have to yell at in tennis. But we'll
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: talk football with him instead. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. You're listening.
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: To the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: Welcome in football insider and expert Jeff Schwartz. Former Oregon Duck,
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: longtime NFL veteran, gambling expert, friend of the show.
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Hey, Jeff, how are you?
- 1:45:25Speaker 6: I'm good. I just heard that Adam would be bummed
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: I won't be in town for the snowmobile convention.
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: You need a snowmobile for your Charlotte, North Carolina activities?
- 1:45:35Speaker 6: Okay, so you know how there's always stories about players,
- 1:45:39Speaker 6: quarterbacks and running backs, like getting their offensive linemen gifts?
- 1:45:43Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:45:44Speaker 6: So when I was in Minnesota with Adrian Peterson, he
- 1:45:47Speaker 6: rushed for 2,000 yards. He missed the record by a
- 1:45:50Speaker 6: couple yards or 99 yards. It was a rough year.
- 1:45:53Speaker 6: I wasn't very connected to the team, long story, whatever.
- 1:45:57Speaker 6: So I had already, I think, left town before he
- 1:46:00Speaker 6: sort of gave his gifts, but his gift for that
- 1:46:04Speaker 6: year was a snowmobile to his offensive lineman. I live
- 1:46:08Speaker 6: in Charlotte, North Carolina. What was I going to do
- 1:46:11Speaker 6: with a snowmobile? What are you going to do with this?
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: I never got it because I wasn't in town. I
- 1:46:16Speaker 6: just left Minnesota as soon as possible.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: By the way, that feels not great, right?
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: If everyone gets the gift except for you because you
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: left town early, it's silly.
- 1:46:29Speaker 6: I never got it. I never got with the Giants
- 1:46:31Speaker 6: either because I had left town because I was hurt.
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: I was already out of town when Eli got the
- 1:46:37Speaker 6: guys like Cowboy Boots one year in Nashville, but I
- 1:46:40Speaker 6: was already... I was injured. I didn't travel in that game.
- 1:46:44Speaker 6: It was already after my surgery. I was already back,
- 1:46:46Speaker 6: I think, in Charlotte.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: I always buy my cowboy boots in Nashville. Eli was
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: making really good money then. Cowboy boots are cheap in Nashville.
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: That's not a good gift from Eli. A snowmobile, that's
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: a generous gift.
- 1:46:58Speaker 6: I got a Breitling watch from Jonathan Stewart and Danjo Williams.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:47:03Speaker 6: And then one year, Alex Smith bought us Louis Vuitton
- 1:47:06Speaker 6: travel bags.
- 1:47:07Speaker 7: Wow.
- 1:47:08Speaker 6: But what I did is the travel bag was nice.
- 1:47:12Speaker 6: I have very large feet, and I couldn't even put
- 1:47:16Speaker 6: a pair of shoes in there. It would just be
- 1:47:19Speaker 6: the end of my... So I traded in and got
- 1:47:21Speaker 6: my wife a purse.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: That's nice.
- 1:47:24Speaker 6: So that was Mary's first big designer purse I ever
- 1:47:27Speaker 6: bought her was because of that.
- 1:47:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: Don't say you bought it for Alex bought it for Alex.
- 1:47:31Speaker 6: Well, yeah, Alex did. Alex bought her the purse. Yeah.
- 1:47:33Speaker 6: It was like a four grand gift. I mean, I was,
- 1:47:36Speaker 6: it was nice.
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: Did, uh, does Alex know that you didn't keep his gift?
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: Now he does.
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: He listens to the show. I'm sure.
- 1:47:45Speaker 6: I'm sure he does. But, um, my shoes didn't fit
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: in the bag. I had no, I just, it was
- 1:47:50Speaker 6: never going to work for me.
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: That's fine. You don't, you don't have to wear shoes
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: or use a bag that doesn't fit your stuff.
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: That's fair.
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: We started the show today weirdly talking about the Oregon Ducks.
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: Talking about Dante Moore. More in the grand philosophical sense
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: because he's back in practice. Non-contact is what we've been told.
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: I'm sure you know a lot more than I do
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: about it. But they're talking about having him play against UCLA.
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: I feel like that's doubtful, but maybe he's going to
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: come back and play. And when we're talking about someone
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: who is highly compensated as a college athlete, but is
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: also projected to be in probably the top five of
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: an upcoming NFL draft, I don't know how you weigh
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: these options out if you're somebody like Dante Moore. So
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: as someone who actually played and as someone who knows
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: more about the Oregon atmosphere and that situation, what are
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: these conversations like right now with Dante Moore, his family,
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: his agents?
- 1:48:53Speaker 6: So I did see the reporters while he's practicing. Part
- 1:48:57Speaker 6: of the steps of being cleared from a concussion is
- 1:48:59Speaker 6: you have to practice, right? You have to go through
- 1:49:02Speaker 6: workouts and see how you feel afterwards. So I'm not
- 1:49:05Speaker 6: surprised he's doing it, but I'm also– it's a little
- 1:49:08Speaker 6: probably ahead of schedule from what I thought after that injury, right?
- 1:49:10Speaker 6: I thought that, you know, it would take a little
- 1:49:12Speaker 6: bit longer, but again, everyone recovers differently from head injuries, right?
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: So we don't really know if, you know, if, you know,
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: he's on the same path as anyone else. So I
- 1:49:20Speaker 6: think it's, it's good news. He's out there obviously, right? Like,
- 1:49:22Speaker 6: you know, clearly good enough to go out there and practice,
- 1:49:25Speaker 6: which is good. Well, he came back to play, right?
- 1:49:28Speaker 6: So clearly he is in it to play this year
- 1:49:32Speaker 6: and guys who, you know, who are competitive and, and
- 1:49:36Speaker 6: have a drive to win, why does he feel it?
- 1:49:38Speaker 6: He doesn't want to sit out, right? He wants to play.
- 1:49:40Speaker 6: And I think if he's healthy, he's going to play.
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: I felt it was kind of odd that we immediately
- 1:49:45Speaker 6: went to, like, Ramos should start when he comes back. Like, no,
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: we've seen Ramos play for 20 games. He might be
- 1:49:52Speaker 6: great at some point for Oregon. But Dante Moore is
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: their dude. Dante Moore is definitely going to start when
- 1:49:57Speaker 6: he comes back. I think he'll play when he's healthy.
- 1:49:59Speaker 6: I think... I think if Dan Lanning and staff and
- 1:50:01Speaker 6: the medical staff determine he's healthy to play this week,
- 1:50:04Speaker 6: he'll play this week. If not, he won't play this week.
- 1:50:06Speaker 6: And they'll be very cautious with it. But like I said,
- 1:50:09Speaker 6: if you pass all the tests, man, and there's a
- 1:50:12Speaker 6: multi-point test to come back to play, right? You have to,
- 1:50:15Speaker 6: part of it is, you know, you have to get
- 1:50:17Speaker 6: through a practice, right? And see how you feel afterwards.
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: Do you have any more concussion symptoms? Do you have
- 1:50:21Speaker 6: any headaches? And it starts with just a simple workout
- 1:50:24Speaker 6: in the weight room. And then it progresses to this.
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: If he passes all those checks, well, why would he
- 1:50:30Speaker 6: not play, right? That's put in place to make sure that,
- 1:50:35Speaker 6: you know, you stay as healthy as possible in these circumstances.
- 1:50:37Speaker 6: You come back healthy as possible. If he's cleared, Sean,
- 1:50:40Speaker 6: I imagine he's going to play.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: So you don't think there's any conversation in the Dante
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: Moore camp of being like, look, you probably could have
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: gone to the NFL draft last year.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: You didn't. And now we need to preserve whatever, you know.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: This didn't seem like.
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: It didn't seem like the injury that's going to end
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: your season, but also Nick Bosa ended his season on
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: like a twisted ankle. So like when you're in that conversation,
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: do you say, Hey, you know what? Let's just be done.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: Darren Peterson at Kansas wanted to do this last year.
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: The jazz ended up drafting him. He didn't want to
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: play college basketball, but he did because he was getting
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: a bunch of money.
- 1:51:17Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: And like Dante Moore, I don't know where, I don't
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: know if he loves playing at Oregon. I don't know
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: if it's like, something that he's just doing this to
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: make it to the nfl and to sign a 27
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: million dollar signing bonus or whatever.
- 1:51:31Speaker 6: Well i think um what's interesting is is he he
- 1:51:35Speaker 6: hasn't played terribly well and it's the wrong way to
- 1:51:39Speaker 6: put it like he hasn't played up to what people
- 1:51:40Speaker 6: thought he would this year and so i wonder if
- 1:51:43Speaker 6: some of him is like i just gotta get back
- 1:51:44Speaker 6: and put better film out there like i like i
- 1:51:47Speaker 6: i don't i'd rather you know just not sit out
- 1:51:49Speaker 6: the wrong way to say it but like i'm okay
- 1:51:52Speaker 6: if i if I could sit out or had good
- 1:51:56Speaker 6: enough film, I'd sit out. But Sean, he has not
- 1:51:59Speaker 6: played up to his standard so far this season, and
- 1:52:03Speaker 6: that might be why he would come back and put
- 1:52:05Speaker 6: better film out there.
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: Okay, so that is something that I think we have
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: to factor in here. If your first four games are
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: just like consensus, incredible, all-American stuff, does it change the conversation?
- 1:52:21Speaker 6: I think it would, yes. He also has one more
- 1:52:24Speaker 6: year to come back, by the way. He's going to
- 1:52:26Speaker 6: have to go to the NFL.
- 1:52:27Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:52:27Speaker 6: I actually think Raiola has less years than him.
- 1:52:32Speaker 7: Is that true?
- 1:52:33Speaker 6: I think it might be. But he can still come back.
- 1:52:37Speaker 6: So there's no rush in my mind for him to
- 1:52:39Speaker 6: come back. But again, if he's healthy, he's going to play.
- 1:52:42Speaker 6: I don't know why he wouldn't. These people think Raiola's
- 1:52:44Speaker 6: going to take his job, but Raiola's not taking his job.
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: Warren Sharp and other people were tweeting about the... Excessive
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: over-officiating of NFL games so far this season. More flags
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: than you've had in over a decade through four weeks.
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: Number one most red zone penalties per game by offenses
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: in NFL history. Number one most penalties on third and
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: fourth downs in the second half of games in history.
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: 17 touchdowns nullified by penalties so far this year.
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: Is the NFL being over-officiated?
- 1:53:18Speaker 6: That just hurt my brain. It's like just... These people
- 1:53:22Speaker 6: are just, dude, they're so obsessed with the officials. I've
- 1:53:26Speaker 6: watched a lot of football. I'm sure you have on Sundays.
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: I have never said once we have too many penalties
- 1:53:32Speaker 6: this year. Now, do I think the officials are perfect? No,
- 1:53:35Speaker 6: they miss calls all the time. But they are human.
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: It's a very tough job to do. I think some
- 1:53:39Speaker 6: calls you just can't miss. But I think for the
- 1:53:41Speaker 6: most part, they do a pretty good job. I have
- 1:53:44Speaker 6: not noticed too many flags. I haven't noticed a hole
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: up in games with too many flags. And that's how,
- 1:53:47Speaker 6: of course, people go right to like, Well, this is
- 1:53:50Speaker 6: why I lost my bets. They're just– come on, man.
- 1:53:54Speaker 6: Come on. I just– Sean, these tweets just feel like
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: people trying to aggregate stuff. I watch a ton of football.
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: I don't notice it at all. I don't notice it
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: at all. The gameplay has been fine. The games have
- 1:54:08Speaker 6: been really good. There are bad calls. The refs are
- 1:54:12Speaker 6: not perfect. But I think it's just not close to
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: the same way that this tweet wants to make it
- 1:54:16Speaker 6: out to be.
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: Did you ever get a Trey McBride treatment from an official?
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: What's the harshest treatment you ever got?
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: Thank you. I'm glad we were talking about this. So
- 1:54:27Speaker 6: for those who missed it, have you talked about this yet?
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: Not really.
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: So there was a video of an official cussing at
- 1:54:34Speaker 6: a player. And my thought was like, yeah, that's what happens.
- 1:54:40Speaker 6: Like we yell at them, they yell at us. Okay,
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: all right. I thought a two-game suspension for that felt harsh. Now,
- 1:54:48Speaker 6: the optics are not great, right? And maybe McBride was
- 1:54:52Speaker 6: the nicest guy all game, and he didn't deserve any
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: of this. But we cussed at referees, and they cussed
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: back at us. I didn't see the big issue. I
- 1:55:00Speaker 6: thought that was not that big of an issue. The
- 1:55:04Speaker 6: optics of it are pretty bad. I'll get the optics
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: of it don't look great. But, dude, that just did
- 1:55:09Speaker 6: not seem like a two-game suspension-worthy incident. for me, considering
- 1:55:13Speaker 6: how much that they get abused from coaches and players
- 1:55:16Speaker 6: throughout the game, and we do the fair share of that.
- 1:55:21Speaker 6: It's a bad clip, I get it, but without the
- 1:55:23Speaker 6: context of why he said that, Tugendam Spencer feels pretty heavy-handed.
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: What about the guy who got knocked over and got
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: up mad?
- 1:55:31Speaker 6: Okay, so it's Adrian Hill, right? I was told afterwards
- 1:55:38Speaker 6: him and The guy he ran into had a chat
- 1:55:41Speaker 6: about it. We're laughing about it. So if that's the
- 1:55:44Speaker 6: case and there's no ill will afterwards, why is he
- 1:55:47Speaker 6: being suspended again for a game? Like if they talked
- 1:55:49Speaker 6: it out, you got two grown men on the field.
- 1:55:53Speaker 6: Emotions are high. He gets run over. I thought it
- 1:55:55Speaker 6: was very unprofessional of the official to do that. Absolutely.
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: But suspension, if they talked it out, like right after
- 1:56:03Speaker 6: it happened and we're cool about it, it's supposed to
- 1:56:04Speaker 6: be excessive, Sean, doesn't it?
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: I mean, yes, absolutely.
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: And there's an article where he says he felt like
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: they were going to fight. You're not fighting a player.
- 1:56:12Speaker 6: No, that's silly. He shouldn't have said that. He said that?
- 1:56:18Speaker 6: That's not good.
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: No, sorry. That the players were going to fight. So
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: we got up and.
- 1:56:21Speaker 6: Oh. Yeah, it's not a great excuse. But I don't
- 1:56:25Speaker 6: think it's that big of a deal. I think the
- 1:56:27Speaker 6: suspensions feel aggressive in both those instances.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: I feel like the NFL is not.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: Usually as prisoner to the moment as everyone else is
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: when it comes to stuff like this they're not but
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: these are very reactive moves to the conversation aren't they.
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: Yeah i'm surprised i think it's a lot to do
- 1:56:49Speaker 6: so i think the nfl has been the best league
- 1:56:51Speaker 6: at avoiding social media when it comes to how the
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: discourse of their league goes and and how the punishments
- 1:56:56Speaker 6: go and just how they how they you know basically
- 1:56:58Speaker 6: run their league and this does feel like you sort
- 1:57:01Speaker 6: of have given in to the mob, right, in essence,
- 1:57:04Speaker 6: the online mob. So I'm with you on this. The
- 1:57:07Speaker 6: NFL just has never really acted this way in these instances,
- 1:57:10Speaker 6: and so I'm surprised they're doing it now. I really am.
- 1:57:14Speaker 6: There's no need to suspend these guys. No, there is.
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: To the world of college football, whose seat is hotter,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: Deion Sanders or Kyle Whittingham?
- 1:57:25Speaker 6: Oof. So my Kyle Whittingham rebuttal is basically– has been this, right?
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: Like he's the only coach who didn't get to choose
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: his quarterback this off season.
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: We, we, I made that point yesterday when we were
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: talking about this, because.
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: That's a massive thing here. It's like the most important
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: thing here.
- 1:57:46Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:57:46Speaker 6: So every other coach got to keep their quarterback or
- 1:57:50Speaker 6: get a new one, right? So, you know, Tosh Lapoi
- 1:57:52Speaker 6: got JKS, you know, Nico staying with, with Bob Chesney,
- 1:57:56Speaker 6: everyone else got to bring in their own quarterback. He
- 1:57:58Speaker 6: did not. He was stuck with Bryce Underwood and very
- 1:58:01Speaker 6: clearly does not like Bryce Underwood as a quarterback. And
- 1:58:04Speaker 6: it's unfair to me to judge him. Like we, you know,
- 1:58:07Speaker 6: are we pretending that Colin had a coach? Like, of
- 1:58:12Speaker 6: course he didn't forget how to coach. Quarterback stinks. Here's
- 1:58:15Speaker 6: the thing.
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: And we know this very well. I believe this about
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: every coach.
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: We definitely know it about Kyle Whittingham. I don't think
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: you can overcome stinky quarterback play.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: Kyle Whittingham... proved in his final year at Utah, right?
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: The reason he came back was to prove in his
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: final year at Utah was that like, I, my legacy
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: and who I am as a coach is not going
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: to be determined by stinky quarterback play and having to
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: go down to the fifth guy on the depth chart, right?
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: That whole injury situation.
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: And whether it was handled properly or not is a
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: different conversation, but that mess of not having the right
- 1:58:50Speaker 2: quarterback is why Kyle Whittingham was like, I'm not going
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: out on the sour note, a losing record.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: I'm not doing it.
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: And then he came back and he had an 11
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: win season, 10 of which he coached. The 11th was
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: the bowl game that Morgan Scali coached, of course. And,
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: and that led to the Michigan opportunity. So look, I
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: don't think it's going well. I don't think he's doing
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: anything remotely perfect. I don't like the way that he
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: talks in the post game press conferences and compared to
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: what we got for 21 years from him at Utah.
- 1:59:17Speaker 7: Why?
- 1:59:18Speaker 6: Because he's more emotional than these?
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: Actually, I will say 20 years from what we got
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: at Utah. So Kyle Whittingham, for years and years and years,
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: he was always like, dude, we screwed it up.
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: Nobody cares. Injuries, our fault. Bad timeout, my fault. We
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: made the wrong play. Our quarterback threw an interception, my fault.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: He was always that guy forever and ever. And then
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: last year, he blamed the BYU loss on analytics. And
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: then this year, he's like, you know, when they lost
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: to Iowa, he's like, God, Jay Hill wanted to be
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: in that formation. It's like, whoa. That's not you.
- 1:59:55Speaker 7: I think.
- 1:59:59Speaker 6: I just think it's... I don't know. I think he
- 2:00:06Speaker 6: feels it because he wasn't able to choose the quarterback
- 2:00:09Speaker 6: that he feels like maybe... He's just defending himself a
- 2:00:11Speaker 6: little bit more, right?
- 2:00:12Speaker 2: Which, by the way, I think is a totally valid excuse.
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: And we could talk all day about this. If the
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: money guys are the ones who decide who gets to
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: be your coach, but then the money guys are also like, well,
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: we already paid for this quarterback, so tell the coach
- 2:00:28Speaker 2: you've got to keep him. Then does the coach get
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: to go back to the money guys and be like,
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: you can't fire me because you stuck me with this
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: dumb kid?
- 2:00:36Speaker 6: Well, I think after this year, they'll let him choose
- 2:00:38Speaker 6: his quarterback as my guess. If he's still their coach,
- 2:00:40Speaker 6: maybe he's not.
- 2:00:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:00:41Speaker 6: Well, you know, the Dion thing, like guys, he's not
- 2:00:45Speaker 6: a good coach. He had one year where he had,
- 2:00:48Speaker 6: you know, his, his son, Travis Hunter. Otherwise it's very
- 2:00:52Speaker 6: clearly not a good coach. Dude, did you see the play?
- 2:00:55Speaker 6: They had eight players on the field for a field
- 2:00:57Speaker 6: goal block and then call timeout and had nine players
- 2:00:59Speaker 6: on the field. Next, next play. It's not a good coach.
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: Incredible.
- 2:01:04Speaker 6: That's fine. It's just not good. Like, Hot seat's the
- 2:01:07Speaker 6: wrong way to put it. I mean, he just won't
- 2:01:09Speaker 6: be back next year. And, you know, I think that,
- 2:01:12Speaker 6: you know, we talked about this at a time when
- 2:01:14Speaker 6: this happened. Like, sort of the selling out of the
- 2:01:18Speaker 6: program for Coach felt aggressive. Like, you had people that brought,
- 2:01:23Speaker 6: you know, that bought, like, prime sweatshirts. They say prime
- 2:01:26Speaker 6: on it, right, with the Colorado Buffalo logo?
- 2:01:28Speaker 7: Yes.
- 2:01:29Speaker 6: Well, when he leaves, what's the value of that sweatshirt
- 2:01:32Speaker 6: to you? It's still the Colorado program.
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: At that point, it's dead stock, so the value goes up.
- 2:01:37Speaker 6: I guess so. But it just feels dead. He's run
- 2:01:41Speaker 6: through coaches and players now, and they're not a good
- 2:01:44Speaker 6: football team. They're just really not. He had his chance
- 2:01:49Speaker 6: the one year with his son and with Travis Hunter
- 2:01:52Speaker 6: in his second year. You guys are going to beat
- 2:01:55Speaker 6: them by 50 points in two weeks. You might win
- 2:02:01Speaker 6: this weekend by a lot of points, I feel like.
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you think of Kansas?
- 2:02:05Speaker 6: Oh, they're very good, and you guys are off a bye.
- 2:02:07Speaker 6: Doesn't it feel so much better on a Saturday to
- 2:02:10Speaker 6: not have to stress about your team playing?
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: No, I hate bye weeks.
- 2:02:13Speaker 6: We both had byes. It was like Saturday was so stress-free.
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: No, but so boring.
- 2:02:18Speaker 6: I think we had a Thunderbats win on Saturday, too,
- 2:02:20Speaker 6: so we got a nice little win on Saturday. The
- 2:02:22Speaker 6: 6-0 Bats, baby.
- 2:02:24Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:02:25Speaker 6: You want to know something? So we play Thursday, Sean,
- 2:02:29Speaker 6: and I will not be there. I'm traveling back from
- 2:02:31Speaker 6: New York. On Thursday. And it's killing me because it's
- 2:02:33Speaker 6: the best team we play all year. I won't be there.
- 2:02:37Speaker 6: I'll be watching on the app. We have a video
- 2:02:40Speaker 6: stream of the game. And yesterday I was joking with Emmy.
- 2:02:43Speaker 6: I'll just text you my thoughts to your watch during
- 2:02:47Speaker 6: the game. And she's like, really? I'm like, no, Emerson.
- 2:02:49Speaker 6: I'm not going to text you to in the game.
- 2:02:53Speaker 6: I told her I'll just call pitches.
- 2:02:55Speaker 2: Is she tipping her pitches when there's a runner on
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: second base? Can they read like in the Padres-Brewers game?
- 2:03:01Speaker 6: How about that, dude? There had to be pitches tipped
- 2:03:05Speaker 6: because there's no way that Cheerio is taking a 1-2
- 2:03:09Speaker 6: slider after seeing 104. I was talking to one of
- 2:03:14Speaker 6: my producers on my bare-bed show. He's a former college
- 2:03:17Speaker 6: baseball player. Before he even saw all the stuff about
- 2:03:20Speaker 6: the tipping pitches. Yeah, they had to have it because
- 2:03:22Speaker 6: there's just no way you take that pitch after you've
- 2:03:25Speaker 6: seen four straight fastballs unless you know it's coming. And
- 2:03:28Speaker 6: then you saw, obviously, the Brewers' second baseman or the
- 2:03:31Speaker 6: runner on second signal. It's crazy that even with pitch
- 2:03:34Speaker 6: calm now, guys are still able to tip pitches based
- 2:03:38Speaker 6: on the way they hold the ball in the glove,
- 2:03:40Speaker 6: which is basically what he was doing, was to tell
- 2:03:41Speaker 6: based on how he was holding the ball in the glove.
- 2:03:44Speaker 6: That's crazy.
- 2:03:46Speaker 7: It is crazy.
- 2:03:47Speaker 6: A one Oh four fastball than like an 88 mile
- 2:03:49Speaker 6: an hour slider. It's insane, dude.
- 2:03:54Speaker 2: The, the trade craft in baseball is so fascinating to
- 2:03:57Speaker 2: me because it's like, we've played this game for 125
- 2:04:00Speaker 2: years and they've figured out longer than that. And they
- 2:04:04Speaker 2: figured out just every possible way to mess with things,
- 2:04:08Speaker 2: to cheat things, to like rules versus unwritten rules.
- 2:04:12Speaker 6: It's, Dude, we had two games this week where the
- 2:04:15Speaker 6: ball hit the roof, and it was playable. It was
- 2:04:19Speaker 6: an insane, insane rule.
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: Very crazy.
- 2:04:23Speaker 6: Like, it's crazy they can do that. And, yeah, baseball
- 2:04:27Speaker 6: is all about finding these little edges and whatnot. It's
- 2:04:29Speaker 6: so funny because for a softball, like, my steal signal
- 2:04:32Speaker 6: that just touched my sleeve was shocking, and all the
- 2:04:35Speaker 6: other team will be like, they're stealing. I'm like, you
- 2:04:37Speaker 6: can't find anyone out anyways, so why does it matter? Congrats,
- 2:04:41Speaker 6: you know we're stealing.
- 2:04:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 2:04:43Speaker 6: Not a single girl's been thrown out in the four
- 2:04:45Speaker 6: years I've been coaching at second base. So it's not
- 2:04:48Speaker 6: going to start now.
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: Um, you're fighting. Justin Herbert's are Owen for, and he's buddy.
- 2:04:54Speaker 2: There's one team in the last million years that's started
- 2:04:58Speaker 2: on four and still made the playoffs.
- 2:04:59Speaker 6: So it was right. The giants, the 92 chargers.
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: Is that true?
- 2:05:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I think so.
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:05:08Speaker 6: Well, um, they're bad. Michael Daniel. Oh, man. Uh, You know,
- 2:05:15Speaker 6: Michael Daniels running the two offense for Herbert. Like, run
- 2:05:18Speaker 6: the Herbert offense, man. Like, what are we doing here?
- 2:05:21Speaker 6: You know, Herbert's not played great. Don't get me wrong,
- 2:05:23Speaker 6: but they do not help him out with protection, with scheme,
- 2:05:25Speaker 6: with drop passes. They just... Harbaugh legitimately ought to be
- 2:05:31Speaker 6: on the hot seat, dude.
- 2:05:36Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh is on the hot seat with the Chargers
- 2:05:40Speaker 2: after four games, in your opinion.
- 2:05:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:05:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:05:44Speaker 6: Next USC head coach? He has, like, a one-year suspension, though,
- 2:05:49Speaker 6: with a show clause.
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:05:51Speaker 6: But, I mean, if USC can stomach one more year
- 2:05:54Speaker 6: of Lincoln Riley, they can just hire Harbaugh. Let's do
- 2:05:56Speaker 6: one more year of Riley.
- 2:05:57Speaker 2: James says two more years. Maybe you just trade. Lincoln
- 2:06:00Speaker 2: Riley goes to the Chargers.
- 2:06:02Speaker 6: I want Lincoln Riley to stay forever.
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: That would be nice. If USC just continued to be
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: angry for the next two decades. They've won one.
- 2:06:12Speaker 6: one big game in five years. They beat Notre Dame
- 2:06:14Speaker 6: one of those years that he was there. Maybe his
- 2:06:16Speaker 6: first year. They lost Utah every time, lost Oregon every time.
- 2:06:19Speaker 6: They've lost every big game they've played and they've lost.
- 2:06:23Speaker 2: Should I buy my Super Bowl tickets yet because the
- 2:06:26Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers are gone?
- 2:06:29Speaker 6: I mean, unless the substation takes the rest of your team.
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: Don't! Don't even mention it.
- 2:06:33Speaker 6: What do you make of the substation thing?
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: I am a full believer.
- 2:06:37Speaker 6: Of course you are. I couldn't answer that for myself.
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: Yes, you know.
- 2:06:40Speaker 2: You know exactly how I'm going to answer that question.
- 2:06:46Speaker 6: By the way, I know you had texted me about
- 2:06:48Speaker 6: what to talk about today in terms of internet trolls.
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:06:52Speaker 6: I got a text from Guy Haberman this morning. It
- 2:06:54Speaker 6: was so good. He screenshotted one of the tweets I
- 2:06:58Speaker 6: sent out with this guy. I've been harassing for weeks.
- 2:07:01Speaker 6: And he says, those guys don't know Jeff can't be offended.
- 2:07:04Speaker 6: Good luck to them. They don't know thy enemy. I'm like, yeah, buddy.
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:07:09Speaker 6: Pick on the wrong person.
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: They got to read a little Sun Tzu. They do
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: not know their enemy.
- 2:07:14Speaker 6: No, they do not. But the substation, of course, you
- 2:07:18Speaker 6: would believe in that. No surprise for that. Definitely not
- 2:07:21Speaker 6: the reason why. But if you don't have guys healthy. But, dude,
- 2:07:25Speaker 6: I mean, Shanahan is such a good coach, man. He's
- 2:07:28Speaker 6: just an incredible coach. He deserves to win a tight
- 2:07:30Speaker 6: championship at some point. It's in Los Angeles.
- 2:07:36Speaker 7: It's in L.A. Yeah.
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: I could go stay with your parents, save on the hotel.
- 2:07:39Speaker 6: I'm sure they would love that, actually.
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: And, yeah.
- 2:07:44Speaker 2: Tickets now are only like $ 7, 000 for Obstructed View.
- 2:07:48Speaker 6: Meredith's probably coming to L.A. for Super Bowl week, though.
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: Really?
- 2:07:51Speaker 7: Probably.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh.
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: See, then I give my wife something to do. She
- 2:07:54Speaker 2: can go hang out with your wife. Although, the shopping
- 2:07:58Speaker 2: they did would cost me more than the Super Bowl.
- 2:07:59Speaker 6: About Sam. money are they going to spend?
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: Nevermind. Nevermind.
- 2:08:04Speaker 6: I was like, I was like, how much money are
- 2:08:06Speaker 6: they going to spend? Um, yeah, dude, it's, uh, it's no, well, she's,
- 2:08:11Speaker 6: she's actually been better with the shop being ish. I've been,
- 2:08:16Speaker 6: I've been proud of her. She spends money everywhere things,
- 2:08:18Speaker 6: but like, It's been better with shopping, which I do like.
- 2:08:22Speaker 6: All our money on vacations, though.
- 2:08:24Speaker 2: So I want you to, apropos of nothing, there was
- 2:08:28Speaker 2: a former NFL linebacker on the UFC card this last
- 2:08:33Speaker 2: weekend in Salt Lake City. And he had his cup
- 2:08:39Speaker 2: of coffee in the NFL. His name is Anthony Wint.
- 2:08:43Speaker 2: He fought for like 20 seconds. The guy that the
- 2:08:48Speaker 2: guy that he was fighting was just so scared of
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: how like physically overwhelming he was to beat him. He
- 2:08:54Speaker 2: kind of like faked and fell down. He only got
- 2:08:56Speaker 2: hit with one punch and just fell down and was like,
- 2:08:58Speaker 2: I'm done. I don't want to do this anymore.
- 2:09:00Speaker 6: Sounds like a fix was in.
- 2:09:02Speaker 2: Well, it, it almost would have looked like that except
- 2:09:04Speaker 2: the guy was just like, you know, he's like a
- 2:09:06Speaker 2: chubby 260 pound guy going up against a five foot
- 2:09:11Speaker 2: 11 inch, 240 pound ball of muscle.
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: And he was just like, Oh crap, this is crazy.
- 2:09:16Speaker 2: So, um, I, the reason I want you to watch
- 2:09:21Speaker 2: it is because like this guy was not a good
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: NFL player.
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: He was great in college.
- 2:09:25Speaker 2: He's the all time leading tackler in Florida international history
- 2:09:29Speaker 2: or something.
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: So he was an, he was an awesome player at
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: that level.
- 2:09:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:09:32Speaker 2: And then he couldn't really hack into the NFL, but
- 2:09:34Speaker 2: now it's like, he is the best athlete in the
- 2:09:38Speaker 2: sport of MMA. And it just is as an MMA
- 2:09:41Speaker 2: guy or as an NFL guy, I just want to
- 2:09:43Speaker 2: show you what it looks like when people with your
- 2:09:45Speaker 2: athleticism are Come to this other sport.
- 2:09:49Speaker 6: Wasn't Scooby Wright doing some of this?
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: He did. He trained. He never fought. Yeah. Shout out
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: to two-star Scoob.
- 2:09:56Speaker 6: I would probably be a good UFC guy.
- 2:10:00Speaker 2: Former NFL wide receiver in Colorado Buffalo, Michael Westbrook, actually
- 2:10:05Speaker 2: was a pro fighter after his NFL career, and he
- 2:10:08Speaker 2: had a long NFL career.
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: He started fighting when he was in his 30s.
- 2:10:13Speaker 6: Did you go to the fights?
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: I did.
- 2:10:16Speaker 6: That's interesting. That's like someone who covers football go into
- 2:10:20Speaker 6: a football game where they don't cover it, I guess. Yeah.
- 2:10:24Speaker 6: Did your wife go with you?
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: She did, yes.
- 2:10:26Speaker 6: She liked it?
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, she likes fights. She enjoys fights.
- 2:10:29Speaker 6: I've got to tell you, Meredith loves it now.
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, well.
- 2:10:32Speaker 4: All in.
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: Hopefully we're in Charlotte again next year.
- 2:10:35Speaker 6: When do you get the schedule again? You won't know
- 2:10:37Speaker 6: for a little bit, probably.
- 2:10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, probably like the month before we get the event.
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:10:42Speaker 7: We're in.
- 2:10:42Speaker 6: Hopefully there's a VIP section this time.
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: I'll do my best.
- 2:10:48Speaker 6: My wife was so angry. I was like, does it
- 2:10:50Speaker 6: appear to be VIP sex? She's like, fine. We'll just
- 2:10:53Speaker 6: sit four rows in the cage.
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: Yeah. How dare you?
- 2:10:58Speaker 6: Sit four rows in the cage. Watch fights for nonstop
- 2:11:02Speaker 6: for four hours in a row. What do you do?
- 2:11:04Speaker 6: So when a fight goes one minute, right? You have
- 2:11:06Speaker 6: to fill the next 15. Are you guys prepared to
- 2:11:10Speaker 6: do that? Or do you have to make it up
- 2:11:12Speaker 6: on the fly?
- 2:11:12Speaker 2: Well, you just make it up on the fly. But
- 2:11:13Speaker 2: you kind of know... what you're going to talk about.
- 2:11:16Speaker 2: You push the next event, and then you push the
- 2:11:19Speaker 2: main event coming up on that same night.
- 2:11:21Speaker 6: Just repeating the same stuff, essentially.
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: For the most part, yeah.
- 2:11:24Speaker 6: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 2:11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean, you know, the first time you
- 2:11:26Speaker 2: stand up, you have 30 seconds or 60 seconds to
- 2:11:29Speaker 2: talk about it. So if you're emptying your clip with
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: that 60 seconds, it means you didn't do enough prep.
- 2:11:36Speaker 6: Oh, no, certainly. I'm just saying, like, there were some
- 2:11:38Speaker 6: fights you had to do, like, 12 minutes of filibustering.
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: Yes, for sure.
- 2:11:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: But you know me. I can filibuster with the best
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: of them.

- 2:11:48Speaker 2: Just like right now, over the clock. Appreciate you joining

- 2:11:56Speaker 2: we'll talk this weekend on the group chat when we're

- 2:12:00Speaker 6: Oh, they're losing to Penn State this weekend, by the way, too.
- 2:12:02Speaker 6: It's going to be a rough one.
- 2:12:04Speaker 2: That'll be the nail in the coffin for Lincoln Riley, right?
- 2:12:08Speaker 6: I can't feel like... I don't know who does Dan
- 2:12:09Speaker 6: root for. I can't figure it out.
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: He roots for every team... That was in the Pac-12.
- 2:12:15Speaker 6: Oh, just a pure Pac-12 guy. Interesting. Just a pure homer.
- 2:12:23Speaker 7: Cool.
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: Thanks, dude.
- 2:12:24Speaker 6: Appreciate you. All right, bud.

- 2:14:18Speaker 2: All right, Utah Mammoth, we got to talk about what's
- 2:14:21Speaker 2: next for them. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN
- 2:14:23Speaker 2: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:30Speaker 4: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:14:33Speaker 4: the best youth football coverage.
- 2:14:35Speaker 6: Here's O.C.
- 2:14:36Speaker 4: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:43Speaker 2: Utah Mammoth in action tonight, part of their East Coast swing.
- 2:14:46Speaker 2: They're in Jersey taking on the New Jersey Devils. Puck
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: drops at 5 p.m. Mountain Time, so early on the
- 2:14:55Speaker 2: app and wherever else you're watching Utah Mammoth games. The
- 2:15:02Speaker 2: Devils so far are 1-1 in the regular season. They
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: got smashed by the Islanders 6-0. They beat the Philadelphia
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: Flyers 3-2. They are sort of on the same level
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: of preseason expectation as the Utah Mammoth. When it comes
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: to your betting odds, they have the exact same odds
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: to hoist the Stanley cup this season as the Utah
- 2:15:27Speaker 2: mammoth at plus 3000.
- 2:15:29Speaker 5: But it makes sense. They, they lost in the first
- 2:15:32Speaker 5: round of the playoffs too, right? Or did they make
- 2:15:33Speaker 5: the playoffs last year? I'm going to have to look
- 2:15:36Speaker 5: that either just missed it or lost in the first
- 2:15:38Speaker 5: round too. Maybe they had some nice off season additions
- 2:15:42Speaker 5: like the mammoth did, by the way, Jack Hughes, that
- 2:15:45Speaker 5: toothless previously toothless wonder American hero. That's his team, New
- 2:15:50Speaker 5: Jersey devils. So that, So we're going to take down
- 2:15:53Speaker 5: an American hero tonight.
- 2:15:56Speaker 2: I don't know how much I love Jack Hughes because
- 2:15:58Speaker 2: he got his teeth fixed.
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 2:16:01Speaker 2: I wanted him to keep it that way forever so
- 2:16:04Speaker 2: we could always look at him and remember the glorious
- 2:16:06Speaker 2: day that USA beat Canada for the gold medal.
- 2:16:11Speaker 1: But yeah, they've got Hughes. They've got Nick Bugstad.
- 2:16:13Speaker 2: They've got a pretty solid top line young team.
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: They've got.
- 2:16:22Speaker 2: Like three guys on this team that are over 30
- 2:16:24Speaker 2: years old. There's just not, I guess there's a few
- 2:16:26Speaker 2: more than that, but it's a, it's a young team.
- 2:16:29Speaker 2: And this Utah mammoth squad, if you, if you're going
- 2:16:34Speaker 2: to be what we think you're going to be this year,
- 2:16:37Speaker 2: you got to keep the goal scoring and the effective
- 2:16:40Speaker 2: play on the road. You got to be good on
- 2:16:42Speaker 2: with your special teams on the road. More trade talks,
- 2:16:45Speaker 2: by the way, for the Utah mammoth, as we, we,
- 2:16:49Speaker 2: we discussed this with, With Tom Callahan, we discussed this
- 2:16:54Speaker 2: with Adrian Denny. Anytime that there's a player available, anytime
- 2:16:59Speaker 2: that there's a player request, a trade request or something
- 2:17:02Speaker 2: like that, the Utah Mammoth are going to be involved
- 2:17:05Speaker 2: in that conversation because people.
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: Are like, yeah, they're a player away.
- 2:17:09Speaker 2: They're a, they're a, defenseman away or their backup goaltender
- 2:17:13Speaker 2: away or whatever. They've got enough, you know, in baseball,
- 2:17:16Speaker 2: you'd call it farm talent, right?
- 2:17:18Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: Talent in the farm system. I'm not sure. Is it
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: the barn system in hockey? Cause they're hockey barns.
- 2:17:24Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 2:17:24Speaker 5: But in the, in the minor leagues, they got enough
- 2:17:28Speaker 5: particularly goal scoring talent to where teams are like, yeah,
- 2:17:33Speaker 5: we can, we'd talk to you about a trade. Now
- 2:17:36Speaker 5: the question is, And that's why Bill Armstrong gets paid
- 2:17:41Speaker 5: the big bucks is like, which one, which of these
- 2:17:45Speaker 5: players that you have waiting in the wings, TJ Ginla,
- 2:17:48Speaker 5: et cetera, are you willing to part for, and which
- 2:17:51Speaker 5: player are you willing to part, part with those players for, right?
- 2:17:55Speaker 5: So this is, that's the complicated part of this because
- 2:17:58Speaker 5: you could very quickly go from a team that has
- 2:18:02Speaker 5: an embarrassment of riches with young players waiting in the
- 2:18:04Speaker 5: wings to a team that has no assets and, And
- 2:18:08Speaker 5: maybe the guys you traded for don't give you the
- 2:18:12Speaker 5: return you hope they would. And now you're all of
- 2:18:14Speaker 5: a sudden in a tough spot as a franchise. So
- 2:18:16Speaker 5: that's why these, these are important. We'll see what happens.
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: It's now Simon Edmond Edmondson, who's asking for a trade. Okay.
- 2:18:25Speaker 2: So right now the, who's he with the red wings
- 2:18:28Speaker 2: have red wings, Dylan Larkin and Simon Edmondson, both asking
- 2:18:31Speaker 2: for trades to get out of Detroit. So not an
- 2:18:35Speaker 2: ideal situation, by the way, Larkin there, he's expecting him
- 2:18:39Speaker 2: to suit up and play, even though he requested a trade, which.
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: Complicated in its own right. Absolutely.
- 2:18:46Speaker 2: But Utah mammoth back in action, five 30 puck drop.
- 2:18:51Speaker 2: And that's, that's your live sports for tonight because it's
- 2:18:56Speaker 2: a Tuesday. So do you got MLB playoffs? You also
- 2:19:00Speaker 2: have Major League Baseball playoffs. You can listen to those
- 2:19:02Speaker 2: right here on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM, after the Morgan
- 2:19:06Speaker 2: Scali Coaches Show.
- 2:19:07Speaker 5: That's live sports, too, Morgan Scali Coaches Show.
- 2:19:10Speaker 1: Don't you worry about that. So we've got Ethan Bay
- 2:19:13Speaker 1: and Noah Benny as the guests on the show?
- 2:19:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Ethan Bay, Noah Benny, along with, of course, the coach,
- 2:19:20Speaker 5: and Bill and Sly have been hosting the Coaches Show
- 2:19:25Speaker 5: together the last few weeks. So I expect that to
- 2:19:28Speaker 5: be the case, too. Cool little change they've done there. Uh,
- 2:19:33Speaker 5: inviting the color analysts this year, it's Stevenson Sylvester. I
- 2:19:36Speaker 5: got our guy. Sly is part of that adds, I
- 2:19:38Speaker 5: think to the show a little bit.
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: I said, private equity money, dog. That's what happens.
- 2:19:42Speaker 2: Brand partners brings in with a cash infusion and you
- 2:19:45Speaker 2: can afford sly on the coach's show.
- 2:19:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: They're like, Hey, uh, it goes slides.
- 2:19:49Speaker 5: Like give me a little extra cash here and I'll,
- 2:19:51Speaker 5: and I'll do a little extra work. They're like, no
- 2:19:53Speaker 5: problem guy. Uh, By the way, with baseball, 4 o'clock
- 2:19:58Speaker 5: is the Dodgers-Braves, which is probably the only really interesting,
- 2:20:05Speaker 5: definitely the only competitive division series left right now. All
- 2:20:09Speaker 5: the other ones are 2-0, and there might be a
- 2:20:11Speaker 5: few sweeps there. This one's a 1-1, and it's the
- 2:20:15Speaker 5: Braves maybe taking down the mighty... back-to-back defending champion Dodgers
- 2:20:20Speaker 5: that have everyone in baseball that are not Dodgers fans upset.
- 2:20:23Speaker 5: So this there, they could be doing God's work, taking
- 2:20:26Speaker 5: down the Dodgers.
- 2:20:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:20:27Speaker 2: I never thought in my entire life as a Minnesota
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: twins fan, I would find affection for the Braves.
- 2:20:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:20:35Speaker 2: But if you are dethroning the evil empire, if you
- 2:20:39Speaker 2: are knocking down the death star, that is the Los
- 2:20:43Speaker 2: Angeles Dodgers. Then I guess Tom Hawk chop for all
- 2:20:47Speaker 2: of us.
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:20:49Speaker 5: And by the way, I've told you, I also don't
- 2:20:52Speaker 5: have an affection for the, for the Braves. I don't
- 2:20:54Speaker 5: have as direct a reason as you do. I just
- 2:20:56Speaker 5: never liked him, but I find myself rooting for.
- 2:20:58Speaker 7: Him right now.
- 2:20:59Speaker 2: Although Dale Murphy makes you kind of like the Braves
- 2:21:01Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 2:21:02Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 2:21:03Speaker 2: If you're, if you go to the game and a
- 2:21:04Speaker 2: Braves out Braves fan gear tonight, James, are you doing
- 2:21:08Speaker 2: the chop or are you worried about that? Because you're
- 2:21:11Speaker 2: in LA and the reaction in LA to anything that
- 2:21:14Speaker 2: is like an antiquated sports chant is, That may be
- 2:21:18Speaker 2: insensitive in that manner. Feels like LA is the wrong
- 2:21:21Speaker 2: place to do that kind of stuff in Atlanta. They
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: get away with it. The home home field, you know,
- 2:21:26Speaker 2: they're doing the full chant.
- 2:21:27Speaker 1: They're doing the Tomahawk motion.
- 2:21:29Speaker 5: Also just doing that on the road is probably dangerous anyway,
- 2:21:33Speaker 5: no matter where it is. I have never liked the
- 2:21:39Speaker 5: chop and it's not, for the incent culturally insensitive reasons necessarily.
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: It's just, I just think it's annoying.
- 2:21:45Speaker 5: So I don't think I, that's probably one of the
- 2:21:47Speaker 5: reasons why I don't like the braves or the chiefs
- 2:21:49Speaker 5: is like, just.
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: Whatever with that.
- 2:21:54Speaker 5: But so I probably wouldn't be doing the chop, but
- 2:21:57Speaker 5: if I were at, a fan of the team and
- 2:21:59Speaker 5: I liked it hypothetically. I mean, why not do it
- 2:22:02Speaker 5: if you're winning?
- 2:22:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to do it.
- 2:22:04Speaker 2: Darren on the text line, the resident BYU fan says
- 2:22:07Speaker 2: he's a lifelong Dodger fan, grew up in Southern California,
- 2:22:10Speaker 2: worried about the next two games. Darren, we're happy that
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: you listened to the show. We appreciate you weighing in
- 2:22:16Speaker 2: on the show. You're a beloved and valued member of
- 2:22:20Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell show community. But if you're a Dodger fan,
- 2:22:24Speaker 2: we're rooting against you right now.
- 2:22:25Speaker 1: Okay. And he's a BYU fan. You already got... You
- 2:22:29Speaker 1: already got your championships, dude.
- 2:22:31Speaker 2: You now have a decade plus where everyone can root
- 2:22:36Speaker 2: against you and make you miserable on a conversational standpoint
- 2:22:41Speaker 2: because not only do you have the championships, but you
- 2:22:43Speaker 2: bought the championships. And the rest of baseball and the
- 2:22:46Speaker 2: rest of us in the mid-major market world are just like, yeah,
- 2:22:54Speaker 2: we can't abide by that.
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: We don't like that. But also, you know.
- 2:22:58Speaker 2: Being a BYU Dodger fan here on ESPN 700, I
- 2:23:03Speaker 2: appreciate your willingness to cross these enemy lines because, man,
- 2:23:08Speaker 2: you're not going to get Dodger love here, and your
- 2:23:11Speaker 2: BYU love is going to be pretty limited. But we
- 2:23:13Speaker 2: do love you, Darren. Thanks for the text.
- 2:23:18Speaker 5: It's not necessarily an anti ESPN 700 thing. The Dodgers
- 2:23:22Speaker 5: are an anti Dodger thing here at ESPN 700. It's
- 2:23:24Speaker 5: just the fact that everyone who is a producer or
- 2:23:28Speaker 5: a host of a radio show happens to hate the Dodgers.
- 2:23:30Speaker 2: I am going to say that it is the expressed
- 2:23:33Speaker 2: opinion of ESPN 700 and Broadway media that the Dodgers.
- 2:23:40Speaker 7: Show.
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: Hey, Ohtani cheated.
- 2:23:41Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: That's what we need to know. That is, we will
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: close it out next on the Sean O'Connell show with,
- 2:23:46Speaker 1: do we have a giveaway again today?
- 2:23:49Speaker 2: Oh, we got two tickets to skillet. That's coming to
- 2:23:54Speaker 2: the union on October 23rd. Before I get out of
- 2:23:58Speaker 2: here for the last break, a reminder to all of
- 2:24:01Speaker 2: you out there, Utah advocates, the injury attorneys who help
- 2:24:05Speaker 2: us give you the injury updates, injury report updates here
- 2:24:09Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell show and on ESPN 700. You
- 2:24:14Speaker 2: don't have to be someone. who's dealing with it personally,
- 2:24:18Speaker 2: who's been in an accident. Maybe you've got a son
- 2:24:20Speaker 2: or a daughter. Maybe you've got someone at home, a brother,
- 2:24:23Speaker 2: a sister that doesn't really know how to move forward
- 2:24:27Speaker 2: after a little fender bender car accident that, man, turns
- 2:24:30Speaker 2: out made the neck hurt. Or maybe there's a slip
- 2:24:32Speaker 2: and fall accident when you were grocery shopping and you're
- 2:24:35Speaker 2: just like, oh, yeah, there was a spill.
- 2:24:37Speaker 1: There's not a whole lot that can be done about it.
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: There usually is.
- 2:24:41Speaker 2: And the advocates are exactly who you need to call
- 2:24:44Speaker 2: to in order to get on the radar, in order
- 2:24:47Speaker 2: to get the information and the advice that you need. Also,
- 2:24:50Speaker 2: you can go to utahadvocates.com. Consultations are always free. You
- 2:24:55Speaker 2: don't pay unless they win your case. That is a
- 2:24:58Speaker 2: key component of everything that the advocates do. They become
- 2:25:01Speaker 2: your partners in trying to win this case. You are
- 2:25:04Speaker 2: not paying them out of pocket. It comes out of
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: the settlement that they are able to get you based
- 2:25:09Speaker 2: on your situation. If you or a loved one has
- 2:25:14Speaker 2: been hurt in an accident, if you've got medical bills,
- 2:25:17Speaker 2: if maybe you're missing some work and that's causing you
- 2:25:19Speaker 2: some financial difficulties, you're entitled to some compensation. You do
- 2:25:24Speaker 2: not deserve to be in an accident, but you do
- 2:25:26Speaker 2: deserve an advocate. UtahAdvocates.com, 385-367-2311. Tell them OC sent you
- 2:25:35Speaker 2: at UtahAdvocates.com.
- 2:25:38Speaker 1: All right, we'll give away some tickets. Close it out
- 2:25:40Speaker 1: next on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Don't stop believing.
- 2:25:46Speaker 4: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:25:48Speaker 4: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:25:52Speaker 8: Don't stop believing.
- 2:26:02Speaker 1: Tickets to give away to Skillet.
- 2:26:08Speaker 7: 877-353-0700.
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: Skillet coming to the Union Event Center on October 23rd.
- 2:26:12Speaker 1: A pair of tickets. If you can tell me who
- 2:26:14Speaker 1: is the current leading rusher in the Big 12 Conference.
- 2:26:17Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 2:26:22Speaker 2: Leading rusher in the Big 12 Conference right now. The
- 2:26:27Speaker 2: drive with Spence Checkets is next. Crosstalk brought to you
- 2:26:30Speaker 2: by our friends at Advanced Window Products.

- 2:26:48Speaker 8: Skillet, is that like a concert? Is that like a DJ?
- 2:26:52Speaker 1: Skillet is a band, a rock band, a Christian rock band.
- 2:26:55Speaker 8: A Christian rock band. You ever see that South Park
- 2:26:59Speaker 8: where they started a Christian rock band, Faith Plus One?
- 2:27:02Speaker 1: Never saw it.
- 2:27:03Speaker 8: Oh, it's so good. They just put Jesus in place
- 2:27:05Speaker 8: of a bunch of lyrics. It's like, instead of I
- 2:27:09Speaker 8: love you, it's Jesus loves you.
- 2:27:10Speaker 6: Okay. Cartman was the lead singer. Were you ever a
- 2:27:12Speaker 6: South Park guy at all?
- 2:27:13Speaker 5: No.
- 2:27:14Speaker 10: What?
- 2:27:15Speaker 6: Simpsons?
- 2:27:16Speaker 7: No.
- 2:27:17Speaker 8: Oh, so you're like above the... Like, it's a cartoon,
- 2:27:20Speaker 8: so it's lesser than... No, I actually love cartoons.
- 2:27:23Speaker 2: I was not allowed to watch The Simpsons, and we
- 2:27:25Speaker 2: didn't have cable, so you can't get South Park, so.
- 2:27:29Speaker 8: I was too late to all those parties. Like you,
- 2:27:31Speaker 8: I was also not allowed to watch The Simpsons. I
- 2:27:34Speaker 8: was not allowed to watch many things.
- 2:27:36Speaker 1: You're a rebellious person.
- 2:27:38Speaker 8: If watching The Simpsons... makes me rebellious, sign me up.
- 2:27:42Speaker 8: What was that Ed O'Neill show, Love and Marriage? Married
- 2:27:46Speaker 8: with Children.
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: Also not allowed to watch that.
- 2:27:48Speaker 8: Not allowed to watch that. We could watch Charles in Charge.
- 2:27:53Speaker 8: Shout out Scott Bale. Scott Bale, what's up? If you're listening,
- 2:27:57Speaker 8: we know that you are. Um, big say by the
- 2:28:00Speaker 8: bell guy over here.
- 2:28:00Speaker 7: Of course.
- 2:28:01Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:28:01Speaker 7: Yes.
- 2:28:02Speaker 8: The Zach attack. I'll never forget when Jesse was addicted
- 2:28:06Speaker 8: to caffeine pills. It was a tough one for all
- 2:28:08Speaker 8: of us. It was actually, that's a great episode.
- 2:28:11Speaker 1: Shout out Lark Voorhees.
- 2:28:12Speaker 6: We miss you.
- 2:28:14Speaker 2: Um, my parents were very hilarious about like the Simpsons was,
- 2:28:19Speaker 2: you couldn't watch the Simpsons when family guy became a thing.
- 2:28:22Speaker 2: You're not allowed to turn that on. Didn't have cables.
- 2:28:25Speaker 2: So South park was not really, In the equation. Married
- 2:28:28Speaker 2: with children, absolutely not. Roseanne, no way.
- 2:28:32Speaker 6: Same.
- 2:28:33Speaker 1: But NYPD Blue? I was watching that when I was
- 2:28:36Speaker 1: in like fifth grade.
- 2:28:37Speaker 8: There's an argument to be made that's ten times worse.
- 2:28:40Speaker 1: There's not an argument. It definitely is. There's no argument
- 2:28:43Speaker 1: at all.
- 2:28:44Speaker 6: It's a.
- 2:28:46Speaker 1: It's like a gritty New York drama.
- 2:28:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:28:49Speaker 1: It was, they had, it had everything in there.
- 2:28:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:28:51Speaker 8: That was one of my dad's violence. Still to this day.
- 2:28:54Speaker 8: Big Dave likes to watch a little, he loves the
- 2:28:56Speaker 8: cop shows.
- 2:28:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:28:58Speaker 1: Shout out Jimmy Smith's good poll.
- 2:29:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:29:01Speaker 8: Trying to think what else we were not allowed to
- 2:29:03Speaker 8: watch a lot of different things. In fact, remember I, uh,
- 2:29:07Speaker 8: I borrowed my friends, dumb and dumber, dumber DVD.
- 2:29:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:29:13Speaker 8: My mom snapped it in half. We were not allowed
- 2:29:15Speaker 8: to watch Dumb and Dumber.
- 2:29:16Speaker 1: No Dumb and Dumber. Okay.
- 2:29:17Speaker 8: Do you remember the trend a number of years ago? Like,
- 2:29:21Speaker 8: so the absolute vodka, they did like absolute basketball and absolute.
- 2:29:25Speaker 8: There were all these t-shirts and they were like a
- 2:29:28Speaker 8: really cool thing. I came home with an absolute basketball t-shirt.
- 2:29:31Speaker 7: Oh, wow.
- 2:29:32Speaker 8: Now that didn't last.
- 2:29:33Speaker 1: Of course.
- 2:29:34Speaker 8: Because I wasn't doing laundry at the age of 14.
- 2:29:36Speaker 8: So my mother was in charge of that. There were
- 2:29:40Speaker 8: some other things that were found.
- 2:29:41Speaker 1: Shut up.
- 2:29:42Speaker 2: Shout out to you for not having to do your
- 2:29:44Speaker 2: own laundry at age 14.
- 2:29:45Speaker 8: You had to do your own laundry at age 14?
- 2:29:47Speaker 2: My older brother complained because my mom shrunk a sweater
- 2:29:51Speaker 2: one time when he was 14.
- 2:29:53Speaker 1: So I had to start doing laundry at like 11.
- 2:29:55Speaker 1: Are you serious?
- 2:29:57Speaker 2: Because my mom was just like, oh, you guys don't
- 2:29:58Speaker 2: like how I do the laundry? Fine, you're doing your own.
- 2:30:01Speaker 2: I was like, I don't mind how you do the laundry.
- 2:30:03Speaker 8: I don't want to do it.
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: That was him. That was him. He's the one who
- 2:30:06Speaker 1: complained about the sweater getting shrunk. I don't wear sweaters.
- 2:30:10Speaker 8: Respect to your mother for drawing that boundary. Oh, she
- 2:30:12Speaker 8: was hardcore about that stuff. So you started doing your
- 2:30:16Speaker 8: own laundry at age 11?
- 2:30:17Speaker 1: I might have been 10, yeah. Did you need any instruction,
- 2:30:20Speaker 1: or was she like, just go figure it out? Yeah,
- 2:30:22Speaker 1: I think it was more just figure it out. I
- 2:30:23Speaker 1: probably overused the laundry soap. I probably ruined a bunch
- 2:30:28Speaker 1: of clothes doing it, but you know.
- 2:30:29Speaker 8: Here's a little secret for folk out there. Are you
- 2:30:32Speaker 8: still separating whites and colors? There's no need to do that. Like,
- 2:30:37Speaker 8: literally none.
- 2:30:37Speaker 7: What?
- 2:30:38Speaker 1: Okay, hot take. It's true. That's a hot take.
- 2:30:42Speaker 8: I have been washing whites with colors for years, and
- 2:30:45Speaker 8: nothing has ever happened. I feel like we were lied
- 2:30:47Speaker 8: to as kids.
- 2:30:48Speaker 6: No.
- 2:30:48Speaker 1: Can I tell you something?
- 2:30:50Speaker 2: Every time I get something new that's white... I, for months,
- 2:30:57Speaker 2: I will keep it segregated. I will wash it only
- 2:31:00Speaker 2: with like maybe grays and pastels, but never real colors.
- 2:31:04Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:31:05Speaker 2: And then there's always that one fateful day where you
- 2:31:08Speaker 2: just need to wash it and you just don't care.
- 2:31:10Speaker 1: And you're like, whatever. And then it comes out dingy
- 2:31:13Speaker 1: or it comes out pinkish or it comes out whatever
- 2:31:16Speaker 1: every single time. No chance. You're lying.
- 2:31:18Speaker 8: No, I am telling you the absolute truth. I think
- 2:31:21Speaker 8: you're colorblind. You, I'm not, you started doing laundry. At 10.
- 2:31:26Speaker 8: But let's be clear. I've been doing laundry now for
- 2:31:31Speaker 8: basically 25 years. Spence has been doing laundry for months now.
- 2:31:35Speaker 8: Is it Nate Bargatze who has the whole, like, I
- 2:31:37Speaker 8: do my own laundry. Have you seen that? He's standing
- 2:31:40Speaker 8: up where he's like. I haven't seen that one. So
- 2:31:42Speaker 8: Bargatze has this hilarious bit where he was preparing, you know,
- 2:31:46Speaker 8: he and his wife were in a fight. And he
- 2:31:48Speaker 8: was preparing to, like, lay down the hammer by saying
- 2:31:51Speaker 8: to her out loud, I do my own laundry. Which,
- 2:31:54Speaker 8: of course, did not go well. When you say that
- 2:31:56Speaker 8: to your wife, you do your own laundry to this day?
- 2:31:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:32:00Speaker 1: Seriously?
- 2:32:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:32:04Speaker 8: So does Kendall do her own laundry or do you
- 2:32:07Speaker 8: do everybody's laundry?
- 2:32:08Speaker 1: I do the laundry for the house.
- 2:32:09Speaker 4: All the girls?
- 2:32:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:32:11Speaker 8: Your wife?
- 2:32:12Speaker 6: Do you cook?
- 2:32:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:32:15Speaker 8: I feel like I shouldn't say what's on my mind
- 2:32:17Speaker 8: right now.
- 2:32:18Speaker 7: Don't.
- 2:32:18Speaker 8: I'm not going to.
- 2:32:19Speaker 7: Don't.
- 2:32:21Speaker 1: I respect that.
- 2:32:21Speaker 8: Do you share.
- 2:32:23Speaker 1: The load at all? Yeah, yeah.
- 2:32:25Speaker 2: I would say it's like laundry is probably like 70-30.
- 2:32:29Speaker 2: Dishes are 99-1.
- 2:32:32Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:32:34Speaker 1: You know, I'm not good. I don't do the girl's
- 2:32:38Speaker 1: hair very much.
- 2:32:39Speaker 8: That's probably good. Leave that in Kendall's hands.
- 2:32:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:32:42Speaker 8: So is it more of like you see something that
- 2:32:44Speaker 8: needs to be done and you just do it? Yeah, that's... See,
- 2:32:47Speaker 8: I'm the same way. And I'm worse as I age. Like,
- 2:32:50Speaker 8: I can't leave a dish in the sink. Cannot leave
- 2:32:53Speaker 8: my bed unmade. And I'm not, like, OCD about this stuff.
- 2:32:57Speaker 8: But I like a good clean. There's nothing better than
- 2:33:01Speaker 8: clean sheets, dude. I don't know that I've ever made
- 2:33:03Speaker 8: my bed in my entire life.
- 2:33:06Speaker 4: One time.
- 2:33:07Speaker 2: No, I probably have one time. I don't make my bed.
- 2:33:09Speaker 2: I don't, like, the bed is unmade. I'm just going
- 2:33:13Speaker 2: to get back in it and mess it up anyway.
- 2:33:15Speaker 1: I don't need a made bed.
- 2:33:17Speaker 8: So my man was crushing laundry at 10, yet we
- 2:33:20Speaker 8: can't make our bed.
- 2:33:20Speaker 7: No, no.
- 2:33:22Speaker 8: Were you ever asked to make your bed?
- 2:33:23Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure.
- 2:33:24Speaker 8: And you're just like, no.
- 2:33:25Speaker 1: I skirted those rules all the time.
- 2:33:27Speaker 8: I don't have time to make my bed. I have
- 2:33:29Speaker 8: to do my laundry.
- 2:33:29Speaker 1: I'm doing laundry right now. Fair enough. Can't make my bed.
- 2:33:32Speaker 7: Fair enough.
- 2:33:32Speaker 8: No, I respect the endeavor. Can I follow up? Is
- 2:33:37Speaker 8: she helping out?
- 2:33:39Speaker 6: Are we good?
- 2:33:40Speaker 1: Yeah, great.
- 2:33:40Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:33:41Speaker 7: Wonderful.
- 2:33:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:33:43Speaker 8: I just know you have a lot on your plate.
- 2:33:46Speaker 2: But laundry is one of those things where it's just
- 2:33:48Speaker 2: like you just throw it in, right?
- 2:33:51Speaker 1: And then you transfer the load.
- 2:33:53Speaker 2: And then you let the clean clothes pile up until
- 2:33:56Speaker 2: they're about human height.
- 2:33:58Speaker 6: Sure.
- 2:33:59Speaker 2: And then when the kids are in bed one day,
- 2:34:02Speaker 2: you just throw them all on the kitchen table and
- 2:34:05Speaker 2: you just fold them while you listen to a podcast
- 2:34:07Speaker 2: or you.
- 2:34:07Speaker 1: Watch a show.
- 2:34:08Speaker 8: Yeah, it's not taxing work.
- 2:34:09Speaker 2: And then it takes another three or four days before
- 2:34:12Speaker 2: they actually migrate to From folded on the table to
- 2:34:16Speaker 2: the drawers.
- 2:34:18Speaker 1: And by then, it's time to do laundry again.
- 2:34:20Speaker 6: Yeah, okay.
- 2:34:21Speaker 8: And with three girls and apparently a wife who's participating here,
- 2:34:25Speaker 8: that's a lot more laundry than I have.
- 2:34:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:34:27Speaker 8: So are we talking once a week? How often are
- 2:34:31Speaker 8: you doing laundry?
- 2:34:32Speaker 1: What do you mean, once a week? You're doing laundry
- 2:34:34Speaker 1: every day when you have three little kids. You do
- 2:34:36Speaker 1: laundry daily. There's a load of laundry every single day,
- 2:34:39Speaker 1: at least.
- 2:34:40Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:34:41Speaker 2: And that's only for three kids. I got friends with
- 2:34:43Speaker 2: six kids. You're doing multiple loads a day. Yeah, well, again,
- 2:34:48Speaker 2: one child, now grown, self-sufficient. I don't have frame of
- 2:34:53Speaker 2: reference for your day-to-day life.
- 2:34:55Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 2:34:56Speaker 8: I was the oldest of six, so I remember what
- 2:34:58Speaker 8: the chaos is like.
- 2:34:59Speaker 2: You have an empty nest and an empty washing machine.
- 2:35:02Speaker 8: It's probably why I enjoy solitude the way that I do.
- 2:35:07Speaker 8: And I'm fine being alone, doing my thing. Cause I
- 2:35:10Speaker 8: was raised in chaos. We were in the stuff.
- 2:35:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:35:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:35:14Speaker 8: Five kids at one point, 11 or under. And now
- 2:35:18Speaker 8: that I'm thinking back, you're right. I feel like laundry
- 2:35:20Speaker 8: is being done all the time.
- 2:35:21Speaker 1: Ask your mom how many loads of laundry she did
- 2:35:24Speaker 1: a week when you guys were all living at home.
- 2:35:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:35:26Speaker 8: She probably, yeah.
- 2:35:27Speaker 1: A thousand.
- 2:35:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:35:28Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:35:29Speaker 8: Well, respect, uh, for your, uh, effort, uh, in the
- 2:35:35Speaker 8: relationship and as a father that's willing to do all
- 2:35:38Speaker 8: the things.
- 2:35:38Speaker 1: It's the great stuff, man.
- 2:35:40Speaker 8: Kendall just helped out a little bit.
- 2:35:42Speaker 1: It's the stuff of life.
- 2:35:43Speaker 2: That is not me, baby. Spencer said that. You help plenty,
- 2:35:50Speaker 2: as much as I need you to. Hey, you keep
- 2:35:51Speaker 2: doing what you're doing. Don't look over here for any
- 2:35:53Speaker 2: answers with that stuff.
- 2:35:54Speaker 8: I'll tell you that much.
- 2:35:55Speaker 2: Stay tuned for The Drive. Thanks for listening to The
- 2:35:58Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show. We'll do it again tomorrow on ESPN
- 2:36:00Speaker 2: 700 and 92.1 FM.
