- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everybody. I hope you are doing well. I
- 0:03Speaker 1: wanted to let you know. This podcast episode was recorded
- 0:05Speaker 1: on Wednesday, January fifteenth, twenty twenty five. By the time
- 0:09Speaker 1: you hear this, some things may have changed here or there,
- 0:11Speaker 1: but we hope you enjoy the show. Welcome to the
- 0:46Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:50Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world. Eleven and a half
- 0:52Speaker 1: year strong. Actually over eleven and a half years strong.
- 0:55Speaker 1: We've got a great show for you. This week, we're
- 0:57Speaker 1: certainly going to be getting into some Eagles talk as
- 0:59Speaker 1: this team is heading to the Divisional round of the
- 1:02Speaker 1: NFL Playoffs and the NFC. And then we're gonna reflect
- 1:05Speaker 1: on the Orange Bowl as Eric and I are Penn
- 1:08Speaker 1: State graduates. Boy, huge disappointment for Penn State fans as
- 1:12Speaker 1: they lost a Notre Dame man in a game that
- 1:15Speaker 1: was very winnable in the semi finals of the College
- 1:17Speaker 1: Football Playoff. And then from there, we're actually gonna get
- 1:20Speaker 1: into fans who are banned from attending sporting events. You
- 1:24Speaker 1: know where that one's going, folks. And we're also gonna
- 1:27Speaker 1: be getting into some Philly sports complex talk. Yes not
- 1:33Speaker 1: if you have a complex about something, but the actual
- 1:36Speaker 1: sports complex. There is gonna be some redevelopment and some
- 1:39Speaker 1: restructuring of the Philly Sports Complex over the next ten years.
- 1:44Speaker 1: We're gonna dive into that as well as some flyers talk.
- 1:47Speaker 1: That's what we're throwing down on the table. I'm Jeff
- 1:49Speaker 1: Warren and I'm here by good buddy Eric Leonard.
- 1:51Speaker 2: How you doing, Eric Man, I'm good Man. We spent
- 1:54Speaker 2: forty minutes getting my new soundboard set up. Yes, that
- 1:58Speaker 2: was a son of a bitch. Jeez is barringer? H
- 2:03Speaker 2: what do you call it?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Are they did?
- 2:06Speaker 2: They did they advertise with us?
- 2:08Speaker 1: They don't know, they don't know?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Right? Fuck him? Terrible? I mean it sounds good now,
- 2:14Speaker 2: but Man, to get to this point, yeah whatever, I
- 2:18Speaker 2: don't want to get super serious, but like just real quick,
- 2:22Speaker 2: like I just want to acknowledge buddy of the show.
- 2:24Speaker 2: He's been on the show a bunch of times.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Right at the end of the year, our PSD special
- 2:28Speaker 1: show where we were doing twenty years ago albums that
- 2:31Speaker 1: we were listening to. Yeah, go ahead, Mark.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Mark. He lives a in l A and he's
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know, he's been totally affected by this. I don't
- 2:39Speaker 2: know the status of everything right now. I'm not going
- 2:40Speaker 2: to go into detail because I really don't know. Haven't
- 2:43Speaker 2: text with him since was it Tuesday night? I believe
- 2:45Speaker 2: we were texting with him, you and I, Yes, just
- 2:48Speaker 2: keep him in your thoughts and uh, and just all
- 2:50Speaker 2: the people in LA affected by it. And if you
- 2:52Speaker 2: see a GoFundMe uh first first I would I would
- 2:56Speaker 2: do some research first, because there's some scammers already out
- 2:58Speaker 2: there which is fucking this yep. But just yeah, if
- 3:02Speaker 2: you can give, and yeah, just keep those people in
- 3:05Speaker 2: your thoughts or prayers.
- 3:06Speaker 1: My daughter Abigail has really been following this as a
- 3:09Speaker 1: thirteen year old, and Eric, like you said, like you know,
- 3:12Speaker 1: there are a lot of people who are affected by this,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and even people here on the East Coast who know
- 3:16Speaker 1: folks and are just seeing horrific images. Her and I
- 3:19Speaker 1: decided that we wanted to donate some money. Wasn't a
- 3:23Speaker 1: ton of money, but we wanted to donate to some funds.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And I'll say this for people, and yes, I know
- 3:27Speaker 1: what I'm going to say right now is a political
- 3:30Speaker 1: based site, but they are an independent progressive media company.
- 3:34Speaker 1: They are called Crooked Media. And if you go to
- 3:37Speaker 1: vote Save America, Vote Save America dot com, slash Relief.
- 3:43Speaker 1: The money that they are taking in is going out
- 3:45Speaker 1: to five different organizations in the Los Angeles area fire departments,
- 3:50Speaker 1: going out to different community organizations and EMS organizations as well.
- 3:55Speaker 1: That's where we donated because we know the money is
- 3:57Speaker 1: actually going to get to where it needs to go.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So I just wanted to throw that out there. And yes,
- 4:01Speaker 1: they are a political base type thing, but they're one
- 4:05Speaker 1: of my favorite podcasts, so the pod Save America folks,
- 4:09Speaker 1: So that's that's who was doing that. But yeah, I'm
- 4:11Speaker 1: glad you brought that up, Eric, So yeah, let's get
- 4:15Speaker 1: into this show here. Let's get into this show. Let's
- 4:17Speaker 1: get into some Eagles talk right off the bat here.
- 4:20Speaker 1: This team going to the divisional round. Hopefully, if you're
- 4:25Speaker 1: listening to this after the Eagles Rams game, you know
- 4:28Speaker 1: what we're saying right now may actually still be relevant
- 4:31Speaker 1: because the Eagles defense this season, Eric, could be one
- 4:35Speaker 1: of the best of all time in franchise history. And
- 4:39Speaker 1: we know they're good. Everybody's talking about how they're good,
- 4:42Speaker 1: but they're not. Actually, folks aren't actually saying, boy, this
- 4:44Speaker 1: could be one of the best of all time in
- 4:46Speaker 1: franchise history. Here's some quick numbers for you. First in
- 4:50Speaker 1: total defense DVOA by a considerable margin. This defense is
- 4:55Speaker 1: also second in run DVA, second in past DVOA, and
- 5:00Speaker 1: first in yards allowed, third in touchdowns allowed. I cannot
- 5:05Speaker 1: remember the last time in the Eagles defense at this
- 5:07Speaker 1: point in the season could still boast those type of numbers. Eric,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I seriously think we are looking at and on a
- 5:15Speaker 1: week to week basis, here one of the best Eagles
- 5:18Speaker 1: defenses of all time, and it's it's something to be
- 5:21Speaker 1: something to be reckoned with.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it definitely is. You know, they keep much better
- 5:27Speaker 2: stats now, so it's a little it's difficult to like
- 5:31Speaker 2: compare errors, right but you know, but I will compare
- 5:36Speaker 2: right now. I kind of have in front of me here. Yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 2: the I think the gold standard for the Eagles has
- 5:40Speaker 2: always been the ninety one defense, the year that Randall
- 5:43Speaker 2: went down and the defense just dragged them the ten wins.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I mean, if you remember that season back then, I'm old,
- 5:50Speaker 2: but like that was that was one of the some
- 5:53Speaker 2: of the quarterbacking the names I could I could give
- 5:56Speaker 2: you was unbelievable. The slop that they put out their quarterback,
- 6:01Speaker 2: and the offense was, you know, averaging like ten points
- 6:03Speaker 2: a game, and the defense was holding teams are like
- 6:06Speaker 2: six points a game. You know, this year's defense is
- 6:09Speaker 2: given up four point seven yards a game. And bringing
- 6:14Speaker 2: up right now, the ninety one team three point nine
- 6:17Speaker 2: yards per game or I'm sorry per play per play.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Okay, I was just gonna have nine yard.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, So I mean the ninety one defense the four
- 6:25Speaker 2: point it is pretty good, man, But three point nine
- 6:28Speaker 2: yards per play they averaged, and they gave up fifteen
- 6:30Speaker 2: point three games or points per game the ninety one defense,
- 6:34Speaker 2: so very comparable, very comparable. I think ninety one is
- 6:38Speaker 2: always going to be the best that I've ever seen,
- 6:40Speaker 2: probably in history for the Eagles. But this one's damn good.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And like you know, it's hard to go back and
- 6:44Speaker 2: do the DVOA and like in some of the like
- 6:48Speaker 2: really advanced stats for the older teams, but I mean,
- 6:50Speaker 2: this one really stands out some other ones I would
- 6:53Speaker 2: think of the four team had a really damn good defense.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah that went to the super Bowl. The other Super
- 6:58Speaker 2: Bowl year twenty seventeen had a good d defense. But
- 7:01Speaker 2: I think in my lifetime, I think this is the
- 7:04Speaker 2: one this year is probably the number two defense. And
- 7:08Speaker 2: having said that, like the beginning of the year, man,
- 7:10Speaker 2: they were question marks everywhere. Yeah, like I mean, Nikobe
- 7:14Speaker 2: Dean is even an NFL player, who's this Zach Bond guy,
- 7:18Speaker 2: He's he's starting to lie back? Or what the hell
- 7:20Speaker 2: we doing this year?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Right? Man?
- 7:22Speaker 2: And they got they got Kenyon Mitchell, total rookie.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Uh.
- 7:26Speaker 2: They drafted uh Cooper Cooper Degene And it's like two
- 7:31Speaker 2: rookies in the secondary? What are we doing?
- 7:33Speaker 3: Like?
- 7:34Speaker 2: And they wanted maybe having the best Eagles defense, like
- 7:36Speaker 2: the second best Eagles defense of all time. Great, great
- 7:39Speaker 2: job by the coordinator. Let me ask you this.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Let me ask you this though I'm kind of with
- 7:45Speaker 1: you on the the that this year's defense second best perhaps,
- 7:49Speaker 1: But I look at the errors because you said it too.
- 7:51Speaker 1: We have to look at these eras and what the
- 7:53Speaker 1: offenses were doing then and what the offenses are doing now.
- 7:59Speaker 1: We know that we know that phrase bigger, faster, stronger.
- 8:02Speaker 1: That's what we have now. That's what's a lot different
- 8:05Speaker 1: than what we had in ninety one. The scheming, i think,
- 8:09Speaker 1: from an offensive standpoint, a little bit more complex than
- 8:12Speaker 1: what we saw in nineteen ninety one certainly with those
- 8:15Speaker 1: teams and what the quarterbacks were able to do as well.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I wonder do those differences maybe kind of alter your
- 8:21Speaker 1: perception of what number one number two might actually be
- 8:24Speaker 1: because I don't know, I don't know. You put these
- 8:26Speaker 1: on it, you put both defenses on a scale, and
- 8:29Speaker 1: they might actually be even for me personally. Do you
- 8:32Speaker 1: know what I'm saying?
- 8:32Speaker 2: Well, I'll come back to what Bill Parcells used to say.
- 8:35Speaker 2: It's like you play who's on your schedule? Right, So
- 8:38Speaker 2: the ninety one defense was going against the offenses that
- 8:40Speaker 2: they were going against, you know, right. But I'll say
- 8:43Speaker 2: this because I thought about what you just said earlier
- 8:45Speaker 2: when I saw the ninety one stats. Now, I'll never
- 8:49Speaker 2: take today defenses and go backwards because they'll always do well.
- 8:53Speaker 2: You know. You know you're not going to take the
- 8:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty four Eagles defense and go geinst wye tittle.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It's ridiculous, right, they can they get killed, they would
- 9:03Speaker 2: slog to them. But I but I'll take the old
- 9:07Speaker 2: defenses and bring them to this era and could they
- 9:09Speaker 2: perform I think the ninety one Eagles defense could absolutely
- 9:13Speaker 2: do that. They like if they play today, Reggie Reggie
- 9:16Speaker 2: White would still dominate. Oh, absolutely, a physical beast. Eric
- 9:20Speaker 2: Alla would still be an awesome cornerback, and the schemes
- 9:23Speaker 2: would be But they they're also really smart players. Sith
- 9:26Speaker 2: Joyner is a really smart player. They probably adapt to it.
- 9:28Speaker 2: So I was like, like, the two thousand Ravens defense
- 9:30Speaker 2: you could definitely play today. Yeah, some of those all
- 9:33Speaker 2: timers eighty five Bears probably, but like you know, yes,
- 9:37Speaker 2: there's absolutely I make you know there is there. They're
- 9:41Speaker 2: absolutely going up against far more complicated offensive schemes, So
- 9:45Speaker 2: I guess you have to kind of compare to errors.
- 9:47Speaker 2: But like like I said, could that older team play today?
- 9:50Speaker 2: And I think they could.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's fair. I do think that's fair.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I also think it's important for us as we are
- 9:56Speaker 1: looking towards this divisional round game against the Range, and
- 10:00Speaker 1: as we're gonna give our just some brief thoughts here
- 10:02Speaker 1: about the matchup. You mentioned one guy and it really
- 10:06Speaker 1: sucks Eric that he is not going to be playing
- 10:08Speaker 1: for the rest of the season, and that is na
- 10:09Speaker 1: Kobe Dean. He was an integral part of this defense
- 10:14Speaker 1: and we never thought that was gonna be the case.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I mean We thought this guy was gonna get cut
- 10:19Speaker 1: after this season, probably because he was consistently injured. What
- 10:23Speaker 1: a year he has had, and now they do not
- 10:26Speaker 1: have him. They just signed a name from the past,
- 10:30Speaker 1: Nick Morrow, to possibly be some sort of backup here.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Orrin Burks did not do a great job and coverage
- 10:38Speaker 1: as we saw, and we're this, this defense is gonna
- 10:41Speaker 1: miss Nacobe Dean Do I think that the defense overall
- 10:44Speaker 1: is going to miss a step, not necessarily against this
- 10:47Speaker 1: Rams team. But I mean, let's get into like what
- 10:49Speaker 1: our thoughts are on this matchup. I know the Rams
- 10:51Speaker 1: of the hot team right now. You know our buddies
- 10:54Speaker 1: and you know we've been texting about this. You know,
- 10:57Speaker 1: they're the hot team, They're the ones on fire. But
- 10:59Speaker 1: you take go look at the Rams what the Eagles
- 11:01Speaker 1: did to them in Week twelve, and it was it
- 11:04Speaker 1: was ridiculous. You know, we always have these teams that
- 11:08Speaker 1: are seated maybe like you know, six or seventh, and
- 11:12Speaker 1: they get hot and then in the divisional round they
- 11:14Speaker 1: just completely fizzle out. I have a feeling this might
- 11:17Speaker 1: actually happen with this Rams team, uh, because I just
- 11:20Speaker 1: don't I just think Vic Fangio is better at his
- 11:24Speaker 1: defensive scheming than what we have seen from Sean McVay
- 11:27Speaker 1: this year. I think the Eagles are gonna end up
- 11:29Speaker 1: winning this.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Just real quick. I can't wait to text Mark later
- 11:34Speaker 2: that you describe the Rams as on fire and hot.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Holy cow, he will laugh his ass off at Oh boy. Now,
- 11:47Speaker 2: I don't know if Vick Fangio can out coach Sean McVay.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Sean mcvaydan the heat.
- 11:52Speaker 1: He's an elite play caller. He is an elite play caller.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and they you know, not to you know, not
- 11:57Speaker 2: to take away from his defensive coordinator. They both called
- 12:00Speaker 2: a great game. I mean, yeah, I'll say this, like
- 12:04Speaker 2: the Vikings got killed by the Lions. I thought it
- 12:06Speaker 2: was like a one off, like, oh, they're going to
- 12:07Speaker 2: do well against the Rams, and they just look they
- 12:10Speaker 2: look like dog shit. Yeah, I don't know if I
- 12:12Speaker 2: don't know if the Vikings were any good at the
- 12:14Speaker 2: end of the year. So maybe the Rams beat up
- 12:16Speaker 2: on a shitty team. I mean, the Donald looked like
- 12:19Speaker 2: the old Donald that game. He was terrible, So I'm
- 12:23Speaker 2: not sure what to make of that game. But they
- 12:25Speaker 2: were also super hyped and pomp and the whole thing
- 12:28Speaker 2: going on at home, and it was it was like
- 12:29Speaker 2: a family thing, and they really came together. I mean,
- 12:33Speaker 2: as an Eagles fan, that would scare me a little bit,
- 12:35Speaker 2: like a team of destiny kind of deal. Team got
- 12:37Speaker 2: hot at the end of the year. They're winning games.
- 12:39Speaker 2: They're on fire. Jeff right, they're hot. But having said that,
- 12:47Speaker 2: the Eagles defense, I mean just stifled the Packers. Not
- 12:52Speaker 2: that they were playing really well, but the Packers are
- 12:54Speaker 2: pretty good team. And Vic Fangio has been around the
- 12:57Speaker 2: league a long time. I think he's gonna have a
- 12:59Speaker 2: great scheme. My fear, honestly, is the Eagles offense. I
- 13:02Speaker 2: mean that that was the Rams defense looked amazing against
- 13:05Speaker 2: the shaky Vikings offense. Our offense looked almost as shaky
- 13:08Speaker 2: as as the Vikings. Not that bad, but they we
- 13:11Speaker 2: have Saquon Barkley. But did Jalen Hurts give you any
- 13:15Speaker 2: modicum of faith as an Eagles fan. He didn't.
- 13:18Speaker 1: For me, it's up and down for me, it really is,
- 13:21Speaker 1: because I'm reading I'm reading quote the stats on Twitter.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But when I did the Eagles postgame show with our
- 13:27Speaker 1: buddy Josh Schuster, Hey, Josh, if you're listening, we we were,
- 13:33Speaker 1: you know, looking at the stats like, oh, the stats
- 13:34Speaker 1: aren't terrible. He went six for six to start the
- 13:39Speaker 1: game and then went oh for seven. It didn't complete
- 13:43Speaker 1: a past till then the third quarter he went oh
- 13:45Speaker 1: for seven basically in the in the second quarter, it
- 13:48Speaker 1: was it was incredible to watch. I thought he was
- 13:51Speaker 1: back to for him going six for six for fifty
- 13:53Speaker 1: something yards and a touchdown. It's like, oh, all right,
- 13:56Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts isn't gonna miss a beat here, and then
- 13:58Speaker 1: all of a sudden, just completely shit the bed Jalen.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts though, to me a lot of times in
- 14:05Speaker 2: his career outside of the Super Bowl season, he's one
- 14:08Speaker 2: of those guys where the the NFL nerds will tell me, well,
- 14:11Speaker 2: look at his devanced stats man. It's something I'm like,
- 14:15Speaker 2: I watched the games, okay. I see when he's under
- 14:18Speaker 2: pressure in the pocket and then he makes an awful pass.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I see when he goes oh for seven for a
- 14:23Speaker 2: passing streak, and he just looks horrendous and he's just
- 14:26Speaker 2: not He's not in sync with his receivers. He does
- 14:31Speaker 2: run well, thank goodness. If he didn't run well, he's
- 14:33Speaker 2: Sam Darnald, right, Like, that's the one thing we have
- 14:37Speaker 2: against the Rams. They sacked Donald nine times, and they
- 14:39Speaker 2: just came with pressure, pressure, pressure. You know, we have,
- 14:42Speaker 2: say Quon and Jalen's legs to kind of offset that pressure.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Ye.
- 14:45Speaker 2: It's my fear is the when he does do that
- 14:49Speaker 2: and he decides to throw, what's going to happen? Ye?
- 14:51Speaker 2: Where's it going to go? Is he going to miss
- 14:53Speaker 2: his receivers? I think they can win this game, but
- 14:56Speaker 2: it is not going to be a thirty eight thirty
- 14:58Speaker 2: five shootout. Yeah, some people might think it's going to be.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I don't think he's like that at all. I don't
- 15:02Speaker 2: think it's gonna be cold down there. Yeah, like ten
- 15:04Speaker 2: to thirteen kind of game. Honestly, I think the defense
- 15:07Speaker 2: is gonna kill I really do.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I think the Eagles defense is gonna I mean, if
- 15:10Speaker 1: they give up more than seventeen points, I will be very,
- 15:13Speaker 1: very surprised. I mean, this is an Eagles defense. It's
- 15:15Speaker 1: only been given up what what did you say earlier?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Like fourteen something points per game?
- 15:21Speaker 2: The points per game, I think it's like fourteen to fifteen.
- 15:24Speaker 2: But yeah, yards per play is like a four point
- 15:25Speaker 2: three So yeah, they're and I think if the throughout
- 15:29Speaker 2: that game earlier this year that they kicked the Rams
- 15:30Speaker 2: ass in LA, the Rams just just looked off that
- 15:34Speaker 2: game and they look great. But this is a different
- 15:37Speaker 2: Rams team. Our offense does not look as smooth as
- 15:40Speaker 2: did in that Rams game. Again, I think it's I
- 15:43Speaker 2: think this one's all on the quarterback and the and
- 15:46Speaker 2: the head coaching. Hoping Kellen Moore can call it good.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I think Vic Fangio can slow the offense down. The
- 15:53Speaker 2: Vikings didn't bring a ton of pressure on Stafford and
- 15:56Speaker 2: he had a couple scrambles, and I'm like, this guy's
- 15:58Speaker 2: like three eight years old. I know what he's going
- 16:00Speaker 2: I know. I hope it's can happen, right, Yeah, that's
- 16:03Speaker 2: not gonna happen again.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I hope aj Brown gets more than three targets.
- 16:07Speaker 2: What the hell I'm expecting to stack up books next
- 16:10Speaker 2: to him?
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 16:12Speaker 2: Bench, oh, I got it.
- 16:13Speaker 1: He starts ding the hobbit, you know. All right, Well,
- 16:18Speaker 1: we are going to be doing our Eagles postgame podcast
- 16:21Speaker 1: show after the game this week. Stay tuned for that.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But as we're moving along with the show here, we
- 16:27Speaker 1: also wanted to get into some college football specifically some
- 16:31Speaker 1: thoughts about the Penn State Notre Dame game. I know
- 16:34Speaker 1: I'm a lot more invested in the college football world
- 16:37Speaker 1: and what happens throughout the college football season. I think
- 16:39Speaker 1: the you, Eric, I know you do follow it, maybe
- 16:41Speaker 1: not as close because I'm looking at prospects. I'm looking
- 16:44Speaker 1: at what's going to happen in the upcoming NFL Draft.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And just I love college football in general. I love
- 16:49Speaker 1: a lot of the rivalries, all the tradition, all that
- 16:52Speaker 1: crap and stuff. I love it. But with Penn State,
- 16:55Speaker 1: you and I both went there. We are a lum.
- 16:57Speaker 1: We root for the Penn State Nitney Lions Boy. Huge
- 17:00Speaker 1: disappointment losing to Notre Dame. I really did think they
- 17:02Speaker 1: were gonna win at Penn State. I thought Penn State
- 17:05Speaker 1: was going to win this game, not necessarily device or decisively,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but I thought they were going to take the running
- 17:14Speaker 1: game that has been so successful for them with k
- 17:17Speaker 1: Tron Allen and Nick Singleton and just really run it
- 17:20Speaker 1: down Notre Dame's throats. And they were killing. They were
- 17:24Speaker 1: killing in the first half. Then they got away from
- 17:27Speaker 1: the run game. And also, it's got to be said too,
- 17:31Speaker 1: this game came down to really poor execution, some mistakes,
- 17:35Speaker 1: key mistakes made by some of the players in key
- 17:38Speaker 1: situations as well, kind of beating themselves, especially in the
- 17:42Speaker 1: second second half, and in Drew Aller throwing his third
- 17:45Speaker 1: interception of the year of the year right at the
- 17:49Speaker 1: end of the game. So I just I you know,
- 17:53Speaker 1: James Franklin, he's always getting always getting a ton of criticism,
- 17:59Speaker 1: sometimes rightfully so, sometimes not from some folks. But at
- 18:03Speaker 1: the end of the day, that second half was awful.
- 18:06Speaker 1: It was a terrible game. I don't know what were
- 18:09Speaker 1: your thoughts as you were watching it, because I really
- 18:11Speaker 1: thought that I really thought Penn State was going to
- 18:13Speaker 1: be able to pull it out.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Can I just real quick? Yeah? The nineteen ninety one
- 18:19Speaker 2: Eagles quarterbacks after Randy Huntingham, Yeah, I have it here.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Jim McMahon, oh, thirty three years old. Yep, pat Ryan.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Jesus, I almost forgot about Pat Ryan.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Jeff Kemp, and Brad Gable. Those are the four quarterbacks
- 18:35Speaker 2: that the Eagles defense had to defend. So the end
- 18:38Speaker 2: of the best defense of Eagles history, I think it's the
- 18:40Speaker 2: ends the argument, all right.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I think I think, yeah, we play it well. Put
- 18:43Speaker 1: a little more weight on that side. Yeah, absolutely, Jesus.
- 18:47Speaker 2: So as far as Penn State goes Man, I was
- 18:49Speaker 2: so invested in that game. It was like you were
- 18:53Speaker 2: deep down. I mean, I'll admit it, deep down I
- 18:55Speaker 2: thought Notre Dame was gonna win. I even won money
- 18:57Speaker 2: off did it?
- 18:58Speaker 1: Oh you did? Actually, yes, you did. I did.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Unfortunately I was like, yay, I won money. My team loss.
- 19:06Speaker 2: God damn. Like this was one of the most fun
- 19:09Speaker 2: like teams I watched for Penn State in a while,
- 19:12Speaker 2: but thought that ultimately they get out coached eventually. Because
- 19:17Speaker 2: I'll say this, the Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman, if
- 19:20Speaker 2: he's on an NFL coach in the next like three years,
- 19:22Speaker 2: that's crazy. That guy is a real deal, like culture
- 19:26Speaker 2: creator coach.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Apparently he gave an electric halftime speech to get the
- 19:31Speaker 1: guys just completely pumped up and get back into it
- 19:35Speaker 1: during the third quarter. Apparently it was incredible.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Not surprised. I'm sure James Franklin was as vanilla and
- 19:41Speaker 2: boring as he seems as a coach. I'm just gonna
- 19:45Speaker 2: say it, he does not. He does not spark enthusiasm
- 19:50Speaker 2: or inspiration to me. But no, the most disappointing thing
- 19:54Speaker 2: is the first half. I text all you guys, I'm like, man,
- 19:57Speaker 2: this is how they should They got an awesome two
- 20:01Speaker 2: back running back kind of situation. The offensive line was
- 20:04Speaker 2: really jelly and they were just running the ball down
- 20:06Speaker 2: their throats. The offensive line was controlling the game in
- 20:08Speaker 2: the first half. I was like, Okay, this is what
- 20:10Speaker 2: they should come out and do in the exact in the
- 20:12Speaker 2: second half, and when they weren't doing it, I'm like, no, Like,
- 20:17Speaker 2: you guys had the formula, what are you doing? And
- 20:19Speaker 2: I'm just And then at the end of the game,
- 20:21Speaker 2: I'm like he got out coached again, Like they changed
- 20:24Speaker 2: their scheme up. They were going in the right direction.
- 20:27Speaker 2: You knew No Dame was going to come back, but
- 20:29Speaker 2: you had to control the ball. You had the lead.
- 20:31Speaker 2: You should have kept running the ball down their throat
- 20:33Speaker 2: and you got away from it. And that was kind
- 20:36Speaker 2: of the mL with him all year, you know, like
- 20:38Speaker 2: the House Steak game. They could have won that game, yeah,
- 20:40Speaker 2: you know during the regular season, and then probably not.
- 20:42Speaker 2: They're probably not in this position. They're playing somebody else
- 20:44Speaker 2: because of the record and disappointing as hell. And I
- 20:48Speaker 2: put it all on the coach, I thought the kid,
- 20:52Speaker 2: the quarterback, looks scared as hell.
- 20:54Speaker 1: He really did, like he and he usually has a
- 20:56Speaker 1: lot of poise, he really does, and he looked like, Wow,
- 21:00Speaker 1: this moment is a bit too big for me. And
- 21:02Speaker 1: I hate saying that because I love the kid. The
- 21:04Speaker 1: development he has gone through this year has been amazing
- 21:07Speaker 1: to watch. From where he was last year to where
- 21:10Speaker 1: he was now. I feel like he just took a
- 21:12Speaker 1: step back and that's not going to be good for
- 21:14Speaker 1: his potential NFL career. Quite frankly, I'm glad he's actually
- 21:17Speaker 1: coming back for another year so that he can redeem himself.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean if he went, if he went pro'd
- 21:24Speaker 2: be sus career suicide. But that it's no like this
- 21:28Speaker 2: is not like Drew Ally is not going to be
- 21:30Speaker 2: a good pro. Like his young kid, he had won
- 21:33Speaker 2: bad game, you know, like he reminds me of Josh Allen.
- 21:36Speaker 2: He really does physically the way he throws the ball.
- 21:40Speaker 2: He takes chances.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Three interceptions all year, three.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Exactly, and you know, I really think he could and
- 21:47Speaker 2: I'm glad he's coming back, And it was just that
- 21:50Speaker 2: one time I'm hoping he takes hoping he reflects on
- 21:53Speaker 2: this and is like, Okay, I sucked. I wasn't good
- 21:55Speaker 2: that game. It was too big for me. I'll come
- 21:57Speaker 2: back more poise and we'll do it again next year. But
- 22:01Speaker 2: like I said, this goes on, This goes on. The
- 22:04Speaker 2: coach Notre Dame is a very well coached team to
- 22:07Speaker 2: come back in that second half when things look like
- 22:09Speaker 2: it was falling apart. How much can we pay Marcus
- 22:12Speaker 2: Freeman to come coach U. I was just super impressed
- 22:16Speaker 2: by their second half response.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. All right, Well, we are gonna be
- 22:21Speaker 1: taking our first break here, folks. But if you are
- 22:25Speaker 1: new to listening to the show, subscribe on whatever podcast

- 22:37Speaker 1: We'd love to read your email here on the show
- 22:39Speaker 1: and respond to it. We are on a bunch of
- 22:41Speaker 1: social media sites out there. Search up Jeff Warren and
- 22:45Speaker 1: Eric Leonard on Blue Sky, on Twitter threads, we are there.
- 22:51Speaker 1: The show is there too. I'm not gonna go through
- 22:53Speaker 1: every handle right now, but we're gonna take that break. Now.
- 22:57Speaker 1: When we come back, we're gonna be talking about some
- 23:00Speaker 1: individuals who have been banned from professional sports games and
- 23:07Speaker 1: banned from stadiums, and we're gonna talk about Sixers and
- 23:10Speaker 1: the Flyers come into an agreement for a new stadium
- 23:15Speaker 1: or should say arena that's gonna be built. But what
- 23:17Speaker 1: does that mean for the sports complex down in South Philly?
- 23:20Speaker 1: And then what we're thrown down on the table. We're
- 23:22Speaker 1: gonna be talking to Kelly Hinkle from Broadstreet Hockey dot
- 23:24Speaker 1: Com about this Flyers team and how they're looking here
- 23:26Speaker 1: at the beginning of twenty twenty five. We're gonna take
- 23:29Speaker 1: that break. We'll be back in just a bit. All right,
- 23:33Speaker 1: we are back, and let's get into something that's pretty
- 23:38Speaker 1: amazing this past week that happened. First off, we got
- 23:41Speaker 1: the news that the two fans who pride open Mookie
- 23:45Speaker 1: Betts's glove during Game four of the World Series, they
- 23:48Speaker 1: have been indefinitely banned from attending Major League Baseball games
- 23:54Speaker 1: and they are now subject to arrest if they are
- 23:57Speaker 1: found to be in attendance at any MLB prop pretty
- 24:00Speaker 1: or event. And then this week a lot of us
- 24:03Speaker 1: know who are on social media. The video is going around.
- 24:06Speaker 1: It was absolutely horrendous. A gentleman named Ryan Caldwell, an
- 24:10Speaker 1: Eagles fan, was a horrendous piece of garbage, piece of
- 24:16Speaker 1: shit human being to a woman who is a Green
- 24:19Speaker 1: Bay Packers fan. It was atrocious the language he was
- 24:23Speaker 1: using with her. Philadelphia Eagles have said that Ryan Caldwell
- 24:27Speaker 1: is now banned from attending games at Lincoln Financial Field.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I'm not sure if it's just games or if he
- 24:34Speaker 1: can't go if he wants to go to a concert.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I don't even know if he can get into the link.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I think it's actually a band from the link as
- 24:40Speaker 1: far as as far as I know, But we wanted
- 24:43Speaker 1: to give our thoughts on one the MLB ruling here
- 24:46Speaker 1: and just how we're starting to see some unruly fans
- 24:52Speaker 1: that are being told to go fuck themselves by organizations,
- 24:56Speaker 1: which I think is actually pretty good, to be honest
- 24:58Speaker 1: with you, I'm glad this happened of that piece of
- 25:00Speaker 1: shit Ryan Caldwell, who was really an asshole to a
- 25:04Speaker 1: woman who just didn't deserve it. So in terms of
- 25:07Speaker 1: the MLB ruling, I think it's incredible Eric how they
- 25:11Speaker 1: could be arrested they could be arrested if they they
- 25:15Speaker 1: go to a Major League Baseball stadium to watch a
- 25:18Speaker 1: baseball game and are found. I don't know. Part of
- 25:21Speaker 1: me is like, wow, man, you're gonna I don't know,
- 25:25Speaker 1: just because they I shouldn't say, just because they tried
- 25:28Speaker 1: to pry open Mookie Betts's club. I mean it was awful.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I mean they put the they put the player in
- 25:32Speaker 1: danger quite frankly, but it just seems a little bizarre
- 25:35Speaker 1: where in this type of world where these type of
- 25:38Speaker 1: decisions are being made.
- 25:42Speaker 2: My personal take when I saw the Mookie Bets play
- 25:47Speaker 2: before I even start, did you ever notice these guys
- 25:49Speaker 2: all have kind of a look.
- 25:52Speaker 1: A look they're all described the look. Yeah, get into it.
- 25:56Speaker 2: What's puffy white guys with bad facial hair, double chin?
- 26:05Speaker 2: Their life is probably miserable outside of sports.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Are you looking at me?
- 26:11Speaker 2: I'm looking straight ahead. I wasn't looking you on the canton.
- 26:15Speaker 2: But no, they all kind of have the same vibe
- 26:17Speaker 2: to me. Sometimes. I know it's not every case, but
- 26:20Speaker 2: like these two in particular, I'm like, those guys look
- 26:22Speaker 2: like schlubs, and it's like their moment in the sun.
- 26:27Speaker 2: You're at a sporting event, you spent a lot of money.
- 26:29Speaker 2: You're watching your team and the one case you're the
- 26:33Speaker 2: World Series, you have a chance to win the World Series.
- 26:36Speaker 2: The Eagles game, it's a playoff game. You probably spend
- 26:39Speaker 2: a lot of frigging money on that ticket, and that's
- 26:42Speaker 2: what you choose to do with your time. Like that
- 26:45Speaker 2: is just born loser tattooed across your forehead. In both cases,
- 26:50Speaker 2: that guy.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Ryan Caldwell lost his job too, apparently.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Yeah, got fired. And I was telling Jeff before the game, like,
- 26:57Speaker 2: you know, we went to games, Eagles games in Phillies
- 27:00Speaker 2: games at the VET back in the day, late nineties,
- 27:03Speaker 2: early two thousands, pre internet, saw some crazy shit. Animals, animals,
- 27:09Speaker 2: absolute animals, And there's no Internet, so you can kind
- 27:14Speaker 2: of get away with stuff, right, Like I remember two
- 27:17Speaker 2: thousand Mets home opener against the Phillies. Two dudes rolling
- 27:20Speaker 2: down the steps punching one another and there's no cameras.
- 27:23Speaker 2: It's just that's just what happened, right, And they went
- 27:26Speaker 2: off to Judge McCaffrey or what the hell the guy's
- 27:28Speaker 2: name was, the courthouse in the stadium, Yes, and that
- 27:32Speaker 2: was it. But you know, in this day and age, sorry,
- 27:37Speaker 2: my son's trying to scare me. You got me all
- 27:39Speaker 2: right anyway, So the uh, the World Series one is
- 27:47Speaker 2: just off the charts. Stupid what he tried to do.
- 27:50Speaker 2: There's fifty million people. I know I'm exaggerating, but that's
- 27:53Speaker 2: a there's a lot of people watching that game, and
- 27:58Speaker 2: you're in the first row in the outfit, like trying
- 28:01Speaker 2: to rip the ball out of one of the best
- 28:03Speaker 2: players in baseball of his glove.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yep.
- 28:06Speaker 2: To me, like what I was disappointed with with the
- 28:10Speaker 2: Yankees' Yankee staff, or like the security staff was if
- 28:15Speaker 2: that idiot jumped on the field to try to take
- 28:16Speaker 2: the ball away, he would have You know, when guys
- 28:19Speaker 2: get on the field in baseball, they get manhandled, tackled,
- 28:22Speaker 2: punched in the face. It is the ugliest tackling because
- 28:26Speaker 2: the security guys are like, I want to be a cop,
- 28:29Speaker 2: but I can't be a cop. It's gonna be a
- 28:30Speaker 2: security guard like a mall cop. And here's my chance
- 28:33Speaker 2: to beat the shit out of somebody who broke the law. Yeah, exactly,
- 28:38Speaker 2: and I'm gonna I'm gonna take it, yeah, and I'm
- 28:41Speaker 2: gonna do it right.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:43Speaker 2: So this guy, though not quite on the Field on
- 28:46Speaker 2: National TV? Does it and he doesn't just get just
- 28:50Speaker 2: get rocked by security like that. I can't believe that
- 28:53Speaker 2: didn't happen. I can't believe it took this long to
- 28:55Speaker 2: ban him and his buddy. I think I got banned too.
- 28:59Speaker 2: That one surprising me a lot. This one is the
- 29:02Speaker 2: other one. The Eagles fan is absolutely Internet justice. It
- 29:06Speaker 2: took a couple of days. I already got fire from
- 29:08Speaker 2: this job. His whole life is destroyed, I'm sure because
- 29:11Speaker 2: he decided to use the C word on it. Very did.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Do you see how she took it, by the way, Yes,
- 29:16Speaker 2: she took like a champ, Like it was like, oh,
- 29:18Speaker 2: I'm ugly, like laughing at him, like.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Like she took it with grace actually yeah, just mocking him,
- 29:25Speaker 1: like yeah, you're such a douche dude, like relax and
- 29:28Speaker 1: uh and and but what's what did jump out of
- 29:31Speaker 1: me was like she was you know, younger, yes, and
- 29:34Speaker 1: was probably probably she's from this era where she understands
- 29:38Speaker 1: like this guy's fucking with me on the he's gonna
- 29:40Speaker 1: be on the internet.
- 29:41Speaker 2: He's an idiot, ye, And she's taken it with humor
- 29:45Speaker 2: and class, and he's just over there spit coming out
- 29:48Speaker 2: of his mouth, looking like a typical what you know,
- 29:51Speaker 2: you know, the typical Eagles fan. Yeah, unfortunately that came
- 29:54Speaker 2: up all week and there's no argument for me he was.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Yes, But I will say that though the amount of
- 30:01Speaker 1: people Eagles fans online who said how not only unacceptable
- 30:06Speaker 1: it was, but let's get this fucking guy. That that
- 30:10Speaker 1: outweighed any of the oh she deserved it type of
- 30:13Speaker 1: thing just because she was wearing Green Bay apparel. I
- 30:16Speaker 1: mean it was. It was by an immense amount. The
- 30:20Speaker 1: amount of Eagles fans that were like, fuck this guy.
- 30:23Speaker 1: He is a piece of shit. Let's find out who
- 30:26Speaker 1: he is. He needs to be destroyed. That that that
- 30:30Speaker 1: outnumbered any jerk offs out there that said, oh, she
- 30:33Speaker 1: deserved it, you know. And I give Eagles fans a
- 30:37Speaker 1: ton of credit for that.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I mean, how much should we give credit though the
- 30:41Speaker 2: guy was a complete ticketare.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Well that's true. Yes, I mean they completely docks the
- 30:46Speaker 1: guy within the course of like eight hours.
- 30:50Speaker 2: It reminds me of back in the day we lived
- 30:52Speaker 2: in Philly. I was walking my dog one day and
- 30:54Speaker 2: he's shit in front of his like small small business,
- 30:57Speaker 2: and I picked it up. Yes, and the guy came
- 30:59Speaker 2: out the owner. He goes, thank you so much for
- 31:01Speaker 2: picking up your dog. Your dog do do? And I
- 31:05Speaker 2: was insulted. Actually, I was like, well, I'm supposed to
- 31:08Speaker 2: Like what are you talking about.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I actually hadn't.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Argument with him, like what are you talking I'm doing
- 31:13Speaker 2: what I'm supposed to do.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, people don't like, but I do. Yeah, thats you're
- 31:18Speaker 1: supposed to do.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Again, Like you're supposed to stand up against assholes like
- 31:23Speaker 2: that at a game like he was. I feel like
- 31:27Speaker 2: he was this close to taking a swing at somebody, Yes,
- 31:29Speaker 2: and he just thank God, just get him the fuck
- 31:31Speaker 2: out of the stadium. I hope he gets banned from
- 31:34Speaker 2: the Phillies, the Flyer six, like the whole deal, because
- 31:38Speaker 2: do they have facial recognition yet? Like can they do that?
- 31:41Speaker 2: Like can they just be like he can't? You know
- 31:42Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 31:43Speaker 1: I want? I think they might. Actually I'm not even kidding,
- 31:45Speaker 1: Like I think there. I think there is some technology
- 31:47Speaker 1: out there to do that.
- 31:49Speaker 2: I think so too, because I think the new Clippers
- 31:51Speaker 2: Arena into it thing into a dome, has that kind
- 31:54Speaker 2: of has that kind of thing. The problem though, is,
- 31:57Speaker 2: as I just described, there's so many of them those
- 32:00Speaker 2: guys that look like him. Yeah, Like, I feel like
- 32:04Speaker 2: it might even like confuse the most advanced AI generated
- 32:09Speaker 2: like facial right now. Yeah, it's like this guy just
- 32:11Speaker 2: looks like a white thumb. I can't tell the difference
- 32:14Speaker 2: between him and the last guy.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Oh my god, I love it. Great, great conversation. I'd
- 32:20Speaker 1: love to hear from some folks out there what they
- 32:22Speaker 1: thought of these both of these situations, the Mookie bet situation,
- 32:26Speaker 1: the jerk off Eagles fan Ryan Caldwell, that particular situation,
- 32:30Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. We'd love to
- 32:32Speaker 1: read your email here on the show and respond to it.
- 32:36Speaker 1: We wanted to finally, before we take our next break,
- 32:40Speaker 1: Eric wanted to get into We're not gonna get into
- 32:42Speaker 1: the Sixers unless you have anything you want to say
- 32:44Speaker 1: about the Sixers. We're gonna talk about some of the
- 32:47Speaker 1: redevelopment that's gonna be happening over the course of the
- 32:49Speaker 1: next ten years at the Sports Complex. But I don't know,
- 32:52Speaker 1: do you have any Sixers stuff? I just I'm I'm
- 32:55Speaker 1: so tired of like hoping for this team. It's done.
- 32:58Speaker 1: This season's done.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I'll just say this real quick. They lost again last night.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Who cares whatever? Yeah, I just found it so funny
- 33:06Speaker 2: that they played okay see last night and lost, which
- 33:10Speaker 2: I mean, I saw the headline on a you know,
- 33:13Speaker 2: I was looking at the Philadelphia website.
- 33:15Speaker 1: It was like Justin Edwards led the six Ers twenty
- 33:17Speaker 1: five points. Couldn't believe couldn't believe it? Yeah, who gives
- 33:20Speaker 1: a shit?
- 33:21Speaker 2: They lost by twenty at home, Like he yes, but
- 33:26Speaker 2: we played them right now. We lost tonight, and we're
- 33:29Speaker 2: the eighth worst team in the league. Our first round
- 33:31Speaker 2: pick is top seven protected. We're right outside of the bubble.
- 33:35Speaker 2: And guess who gets our pick. Oklahoma City Thunder who
- 33:38Speaker 2: might win the title, are going to get our top
- 33:40Speaker 2: ten draft pick. That's what a shit show this season
- 33:43Speaker 2: has been. That's the only six Ers point I wanted
- 33:44Speaker 2: to make.
- 33:45Speaker 1: All right, sounds good, Well, we wanted to get into
- 33:47Speaker 1: the fact that the Sixers and Flyers, along with Comcast Spectacor,
- 33:51Speaker 1: they have agreed on a new arena that's going to
- 33:54Speaker 1: be built by twenty thirty one in South Philadelphia. Wanted
- 33:59Speaker 1: to give our thoughts about this and the fact that
- 34:01Speaker 1: the Sixers abandoned their plans for the Center City Arena,
- 34:06Speaker 1: and there's also going to be some other stuff in
- 34:09Speaker 1: store for the South Philly Sports Complex over the course
- 34:12Speaker 1: of these next ten years. The Sixers owners said that
- 34:16Speaker 1: they are going to develop a quote, develop a variety
- 34:19Speaker 1: of options for the East Market Street site where they
- 34:22Speaker 1: initially were going to build the arena. But Eric, I
- 34:27Speaker 1: think the fact that they have come to that, and
- 34:29Speaker 1: it's really bizarre because Philadelphia City government basically agreed to
- 34:34Speaker 1: the East Market Street site and now the plans are
- 34:37Speaker 1: abandoned and they're just going to be diving into redeveloping
- 34:43Speaker 1: the South Philly Sports Complex area. I personally think we're
- 34:47Speaker 1: going to see more redevelopment from a sports perspective, whether
- 34:51Speaker 1: it's this particular arena, the new Sixers and Flyers Arena,
- 34:56Speaker 1: whether it's a new Eagles stadium and site in the
- 35:01Speaker 1: Navy Yard. I think the Navy Yard is going to
- 35:03Speaker 1: see a lot of this redevelopment. We're gonna end up
- 35:06Speaker 1: seeing more restaurants. I think, more retail. There's gonna be
- 35:10Speaker 1: more shopping, there's gonna be I believe that Philadelphia Union
- 35:14Speaker 1: may end up moving from Chester to the South Philadelphia
- 35:18Speaker 1: Sports Complex as well. So over the course of the
- 35:21Speaker 1: next eight to ten years, we are gonna see some
- 35:24Speaker 1: significant development down there. I'm honest, I'm hoping taxpayer money
- 35:29Speaker 1: is not going to be involved in it. I know exactly.
- 35:32Speaker 1: It's laughable, you know. And yes, folks, I'm a Democrat
- 35:35Speaker 1: and I'm saying that, so I wonder what it's gonna
- 35:41Speaker 1: look like. And I just find it so bizarre, Eric
- 35:43Speaker 1: that they were all in on the Center City site
- 35:47Speaker 1: and they're like, Okay, forget it. Even though we've got
- 35:50Speaker 1: the city government who was on board with us here,
- 35:53Speaker 1: we're going to do it to abandon it. Something happened,
- 35:56Speaker 1: of course, which wasn't gonna make it feasible, whether it
- 35:59Speaker 1: was from a sheer infrastructure standpoint or a financial uh standpoint.
- 36:04Speaker 1: But it's gonna We're gonna We're gonna see some interesting
- 36:07Speaker 1: redevelopment at the South Philly Sports Complex site and probably
- 36:11Speaker 1: in the Navy Yard in the future.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Well, I my company, their their home base is actually
- 36:16Speaker 2: down in the Navy Yard. It's one of the larger buildings. Yeah,
- 36:19Speaker 2: and I was down there three months ago and I
- 36:21Speaker 2: was struck by I've been down there in ages. I
- 36:24Speaker 2: used to I used to live there. The only time
- 36:25Speaker 2: everyon went down to the Navy Yard South Philly. That
- 36:27Speaker 2: deep was like like the end of the broad Street
- 36:30Speaker 2: run where you'd cross finish line, get a beer, and
- 36:33Speaker 2: you head back up north.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I used to be down at the Navy Yard, an
- 36:37Speaker 1: old job that I used to have, I have to have.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I'd have meetings down there at least once a month
- 36:41Speaker 1: or so. It's a fantastic area, but it.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Was kind of like a a wasteland. But now the
- 36:46Speaker 2: last time I was down and I'm like, it's hotels
- 36:48Speaker 2: down here, restaurants, holy crab. Okay wow. So I'm not
- 36:52Speaker 2: surprised that that's going to start to expand south, and
- 36:54Speaker 2: I hope it does off of the current reservation they
- 36:57Speaker 2: have set up, because it really is like.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Like it's like they're no man's land.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Exfinity Live. It's all concrete parking lot. Just yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 2: there's there's no field, no warmth. It's just it's just
- 37:12Speaker 2: it's it's a corporation and inspired thing, which is what
- 37:16Speaker 2: it completely affected what happened here. I read the story
- 37:21Speaker 2: and I was like, this is the most corporate like
- 37:25Speaker 2: we have interest here. We are going to butter up
- 37:28Speaker 2: the politicians and give you some compensatory uh like response,
- 37:34Speaker 2: like a financial response, and you're going to accept this.
- 37:38Speaker 2: And what really struck out struck to me, struck me
- 37:41Speaker 2: was the fact that Brian Roberts, the CEO of of Comcasts,
- 37:46Speaker 2: who also owns n B NBC Universal. NBC Universal shows
- 37:50Speaker 2: Sixers Games, Flyers Games. They also have NBC which has
- 37:54Speaker 2: a deal with the NFL. Roger Goodell was involved with
- 37:57Speaker 2: the negotiations, apparently Adam Silver. So this was a flat
- 38:03Speaker 2: out like, Okay, Philadelphia, you can't get this figured out.
- 38:05Speaker 2: We don't want it down there. We want it here
- 38:08Speaker 2: where we already have exfinities live, we have this huge complex.
- 38:11Speaker 2: We want everything here. And I mean Comcast already owns
- 38:14Speaker 2: downtown Philadelphia. And I think what happened was they they
- 38:20Speaker 2: all like the big corporate heads, came in and said,
- 38:23Speaker 2: all right, you can't like this is we don't. This
- 38:26Speaker 2: seems shaky to us. We're gonna come in and say,
- 38:29Speaker 2: we'll give you new arena down where we have it now.
- 38:32Speaker 2: We're gonna start to build restaurants and build it up
- 38:34Speaker 2: a little bit, get involved in the city, and you
- 38:37Speaker 2: know what, We're gonna throw you where Market Street was
- 38:41Speaker 2: gonna be. We're gonna we're gonna throw you some some
- 38:43Speaker 2: development for the downtown. Yeah, like we'll invest in some stuff. Yeah,
- 38:46Speaker 2: you're in city council. Okay, well maybe we'll donate to
- 38:49Speaker 2: this this and we'll put some buildings in your district.
- 38:51Speaker 2: And the slimy, slimy, slimy story, I'm not gonna lie.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Like I was like, man, this feels like uh like
- 38:59Speaker 2: a like a like a movie about like a city,
- 39:03Speaker 2: and like corporations come in and just kind of politicians.
- 39:07Speaker 2: And just when I heard Roder Goodell was involved and
- 39:11Speaker 2: the CEO from Comcast, I'm like, why this is a
- 39:14Speaker 2: basketball arena? Like that? That jumped out to me. And
- 39:18Speaker 2: and then when like the they said they would have
- 39:20Speaker 2: you read all the articles, it's like, we'll do some
- 39:22Speaker 2: downtown investments and I'm like, what the what does that happen?
- 39:26Speaker 1: Like what does it mean? Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, there.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Already was one. You're gonna get arena for a basketball
- 39:30Speaker 2: team downtown, And now like you're just there's just like
- 39:33Speaker 2: this nameless empty investments going on downtown. Really weird story
- 39:39Speaker 2: but really corrupt sounding and not unlike Philadelphia if you
- 39:43Speaker 2: read of the history of like but maybe like as
- 39:47Speaker 2: the upside as a fan who has no control over
- 39:50Speaker 2: tax dollars and all the good stuff, like maybe maybe
- 39:53Speaker 2: down where those arenas are, and maybe in the Navy
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yard the expansion, and like some other restaurants and stuff
- 39:59Speaker 2: hotels go up, like might be better as a fan,
- 40:02Speaker 2: Like I go to Sixers games, and I prefer like
- 40:07Speaker 2: parking downtown and taking the subway, yeah, and parking downtown,
- 40:11Speaker 2: going to a cool restaurant and then taking the subway
- 40:14Speaker 2: to the game and coming right out and going home, yeah,
- 40:16Speaker 2: because where everything is there. I don't want to go
- 40:18Speaker 2: to Definnielve and have a twelve dollars beer and an
- 40:21Speaker 2: eighteen dollars chief steak. Yep, that sucks, right, He's like
- 40:26Speaker 2: shit right, and tip and I just spent fifty bucks
- 40:29Speaker 2: or whatever it is like that that blows. It's not
- 40:31Speaker 2: it's not a good experience. The whole story was just
- 40:34Speaker 2: kind of made me feel slimy when I read it.
- 40:37Speaker 1: It's interesting how you mentioned that, just how how Comcasts
- 40:40Speaker 1: basically owns so much of Center City, and it really
- 40:45Speaker 1: is a reflection I think of a lot of how
- 40:50Speaker 1: can I say this because I don't want to get
- 40:52Speaker 1: I don't want to get too political, but what we
- 40:55Speaker 1: are starting to see within our country from a national standpoint,
- 40:58Speaker 1: and the folks who are in control are going to
- 41:01Speaker 1: be in control. Folks who are going to be in charge,
- 41:05Speaker 1: the amount of billionaires that are going to be at
- 41:07Speaker 1: the top of the helm in our federal government. You
- 41:12Speaker 1: can see this happening in various cities, and we're seeing
- 41:15Speaker 1: this in Philadelphia specifically with Comcasts. The amount of power
- 41:19Speaker 1: that they have as a company and a corporation being
- 41:22Speaker 1: able to basically say what they want and tell folks
- 41:28Speaker 1: what they are going to do within a community. I
- 41:32Speaker 1: don't think it's the healthiest thing in the world without
- 41:35Speaker 1: having residents, without having community stakeholders really involved in the process. Now,
- 41:41Speaker 1: do I think what they could develop at the South
- 41:44Speaker 1: Philadelphia Complex, sports Complex and even the Navy Yard can
- 41:48Speaker 1: be good for economic development for enhancing the tax base. Absolutely,
- 41:52Speaker 1: I think it can be a good thing. But the
- 41:55Speaker 1: decisions that are being made and by the people who
- 41:58Speaker 1: are making the decisions, there's something that does kind of
- 42:01Speaker 1: stink about it. There's something that's kind of oligarkish in
- 42:04Speaker 1: a way, if I can say that, and it's very
- 42:09Speaker 1: reflective of where a lot of entities. I don't even
- 42:15Speaker 1: want to call them storylines, because we're living it right
- 42:17Speaker 1: now in this country where you have powerful business entities
- 42:22Speaker 1: who are running the show in certain geographic areas of
- 42:26Speaker 1: the United States, and even of course down in Washington,
- 42:29Speaker 1: we're going to be seeing very soon Oligark. Oligark's show
- 42:34Speaker 1: running is what we're going to be seeing.
- 42:37Speaker 2: And speaking of Oligarks, I didn't hear Josh Harris's name
- 42:39Speaker 2: involved in all in this story.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I did initially, right, initially he was there at the
- 42:44Speaker 1: press conference, Yeah, but all I heard was like, Brian Roberts,
- 42:49Speaker 1: Roger Goodell, and Adam Silver had a conversation, who are
- 42:52Speaker 1: bigger than Josh Harris. He owns the team, but they
- 42:55Speaker 1: run the leagues and he runs and Roberts runs comcast
- 42:59Speaker 1: in NBC.
- 43:01Speaker 2: I think, I really think the Sixers or whoever had
- 43:03Speaker 2: a deal with Downtown had it, had a good handshake
- 43:06Speaker 2: deal with the city council and whatever the city, and
- 43:10Speaker 2: then the big guys, the Oligarchs, came in and we're like, nah,
- 43:15Speaker 2: I don't know. We Brian Roberts like, I don't know.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I kind of like what we have down here. We
- 43:20Speaker 2: all our teams are down here. Let's keep it down here. Yeah,
- 43:23Speaker 2: we don't want to put it downtown because it's gonna
- 43:25Speaker 2: be it's hard, Like, you know, it's gonna be a
- 43:29Speaker 2: lot of development for the city. And then they were like, yeah,
- 43:31Speaker 2: we're not doing that now, but we'll we'll throw some
- 43:34Speaker 2: stuff downe yeah. Yeah. And it really feels like one
- 43:38Speaker 2: of those just corrupt, gross stories. And I it's gonna
- 43:43Speaker 2: suck because you know, the stuff that's going to go
- 43:46Speaker 2: down there will not excite someone like me that wants
- 43:49Speaker 2: something cool. Yeah, it's gonna be just you're just gonna
- 43:52Speaker 2: expand Inxfinity Live and have shitty concerts with like Jelly
- 43:57Speaker 2: Roll and ship like that. You know, I don't care
- 43:59Speaker 2: about that. And but what's wild to me is like
- 44:05Speaker 2: I see the date twenty thirty one. It's twenty twenty five.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Six years from now.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Yeah, six years, Like what are we talking about?
- 44:13Speaker 1: A lot longer than six years?
- 44:14Speaker 2: It probably will expand past that, But like, I like
- 44:18Speaker 2: the fact that they're going to update the get a
- 44:20Speaker 2: new arena because the one they have kind of sucks.
- 44:22Speaker 2: They should definitely go to the like I said earlier,
- 44:24Speaker 2: into it place the Clippers. You're gonna have an actual
- 44:27Speaker 2: basketball arena. Build a basketball arena, yeah right, yeah, unless
- 44:30Speaker 2: you're gonna share it with the hockey team, which sucks.
- 44:32Speaker 2: But just in terms of like building an arena, I
- 44:35Speaker 2: don't know. The whole story is gross and doesn't really
- 44:39Speaker 2: make me happy as a six Ers fan. And but
- 44:43Speaker 2: what I do imagine I saw the year twenty thirty one,
- 44:46Speaker 2: and I'm thinking em beads and b becomes a free
- 44:49Speaker 2: on research a free agent in twenty thirty So I
- 44:53Speaker 2: guess they're gonna open the new arena with a thirty
- 44:55Speaker 2: year old Maxine a forty year old Paul George. Is
- 44:57Speaker 2: that what we're that we have to look forward to?
- 45:00Speaker 1: Oh?
- 45:02Speaker 2: Wow, a gray bearded, gray haired Paul George a new arena.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Yay, just shaking the salt and pepper out of his hair.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Come on, maybe he'll soy sauce it. He'll yeah, like
- 45:14Speaker 2: Trelick Young for the new arena.
- 45:16Speaker 1: So, by the way, I said soy sauce to somebody
- 45:18Speaker 1: a few days ago, we were talking about Ohio State's coach.
- 45:22Speaker 2: They started, Oh my god, he's ultimate soy saucer.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Yeah, gosh, his soy sauce is awful it's terribly.
- 45:29Speaker 2: He does the cyberns and the beard.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Yes, you can't do that.
- 45:32Speaker 2: You look absurd. I'm gonna dip my my sushi in
- 45:36Speaker 2: there and in your in your in your what you
- 45:38Speaker 2: called the soul patch.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Yes, yes, all right, buddy, I gotta let you go
- 45:44Speaker 1: before we get to our interview and get into some
- 45:47Speaker 1: Flyers talk. Any last and final thoughts before you head
- 45:50Speaker 1: out this week.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Do the Flyers win a Cup before twenty thirty one?
- 45:55Speaker 5: Oh?
- 45:56Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 45:59Speaker 1: They are gonna be aiculously competitive team within the next
- 46:02Speaker 1: two years? I think, to be honest with you, if
- 46:04Speaker 1: they they gotta get some goaltending, because Kelly and I
- 46:07Speaker 1: are gonna get into it. I'm gonna be talking to
- 46:09Speaker 1: her about it. The goaltending this year has been one
- 46:12Speaker 1: of the biggest surprises in terms of what is awful.
- 46:15Speaker 1: It is horrendous that it is a perfect tank opportunity
- 46:20Speaker 1: for them. Just keep the goaltenders they have. They're gonna
- 46:23Speaker 1: they're gonna get a good draft pick if they keep
- 46:25Speaker 1: this up. But I think it's possible. I think it's
- 46:28Speaker 1: possible they can be in contention.
- 46:30Speaker 2: So you're saying, no, it's gonna be the same ship
- 46:32Speaker 2: for the next six years.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Maybe the next couple of years. Coupful.
- 46:37Speaker 2: I swear Pelly Limberg died in like what eighty one? Yeah,
- 46:40Speaker 2: never never came to first.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, buddy, I'll let you go. Folks. We
- 46:46Speaker 1: are gonna take a quick break to pay some bills.
- 46:49Speaker 1: We get back. We got, We're gonna get into some
- 46:51Speaker 1: Flyers talk. Stick with us, all right, we are back.
- 46:55Speaker 1: It's getting some Flyers talk. It's what we're throwing down
- 46:57Speaker 1: on the table and now on the table. Joining us
- 47:03Speaker 1: this week to get into this Philadelphia Flyers team and
- 47:06Speaker 1: what they have been doing on the ice. From broad
- 47:08Speaker 1: Street Hockey dot Com. I am a subscriber over there.
- 47:11Speaker 1: They have fantastic content. As always, we have the one
- 47:15Speaker 1: and only Kelly Hinkel. How are you, Kelly?
- 47:17Speaker 4: I am great, Jeff, how are you doing?
- 47:19Speaker 1: I am doing all right. I've been enjoying this Flyers team,
- 47:22Speaker 1: watching an interesting season every now and again. We've seen
- 47:26Speaker 1: some good stuff from the Flyers this year as well
- 47:29Speaker 1: as Look, they've also laid some big fat turds as well.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean we're starting to see here the
- 47:38Speaker 1: manifestation of some building blocks for the future. I'm kind
- 47:41Speaker 1: of like getting tired Kelly of like using the word rebuild.
- 47:44Speaker 1: So I'm gonna try to like use the phrase manifestation
- 47:48Speaker 1: of some building blocks for the future. That's where I'm
- 47:51Speaker 1: going with it. So anyway, I just I'm wanting to
- 47:55Speaker 1: get your thoughts, your feelings on if you had one word,
- 47:59Speaker 1: one word to sum up this Flyer season thus far,
- 48:03Speaker 1: at this point in mid January, what would that one
- 48:05Speaker 1: word be.
- 48:06Speaker 2: And why one word was?
- 48:08Speaker 4: So I thought a lot about this because picking one
- 48:11Speaker 4: single word was it for this team and especially for
- 48:15Speaker 4: people like us who never stopped talking.
- 48:18Speaker 5: If I had, if I had to pick one, I
- 48:22Speaker 5: think I'd say surprising. And Okay, I'm not really surprised
- 48:26Speaker 5: about where they are like standings wise. I kind of
- 48:30Speaker 5: always anticipated they'd be kind of like a bubble team,
- 48:34Speaker 5: mostly because I thought there were a bunch of teams
- 48:36Speaker 5: in the Metro that weren't going to be very good,
- 48:38Speaker 5: and I thought that would give the Flyers an opportunity
- 48:40Speaker 5: to build off what they did last season and you know,
- 48:43Speaker 5: maybe sneak into one of those wild card.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Spots, but probably be on the bubble. And that's really
- 48:47Speaker 4: precisely where they are. But I I kind of saw
- 48:51Speaker 4: them getting there in a different way. I think then
- 48:55Speaker 4: they have got there. Like I didn't expect the goaltending
- 48:58Speaker 4: to be this much of a disaster.
- 49:00Speaker 1: We're going to get into it, but I don't think
- 49:02Speaker 1: any of us. I don't think any of us thought
- 49:04Speaker 1: in a million years it would be this.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Horrendous no and and if it was better, they wouldn't
- 49:09Speaker 4: be a bubble team. They would probably be in one
- 49:11Speaker 4: of the wild cards back And I didn't expect like
- 49:15Speaker 4: the third, well the third I guess, quote unquote line
- 49:18Speaker 4: to be the best line on the team. I didn't
- 49:21Speaker 4: expect Rasmus versu Linin to be the second best aventsman
- 49:26Speaker 4: on the team. I didn't expect Travis Connectney to continue
- 49:28Speaker 4: to be as good as there's just been. Like I
- 49:30Speaker 4: kind of thought we would see more of the offense
- 49:33Speaker 4: guys take a step forward, Like oh and tip It
- 49:36Speaker 4: I thought would be a little bit better than he's been.
- 49:38Speaker 4: Tyson Forrester, I thought would be scoring. That's what I
- 49:40Speaker 4: was hoping for. I was hoping those guys would step
- 49:42Speaker 4: up and that would be the thing that kind of
- 49:44Speaker 4: pushed them towards the playoffs. But it's kind of been
- 49:48Speaker 4: a mixed bag of things that's getting them there, and
- 49:51Speaker 4: that's been a little bit surprising, I think, I.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Think that's a good word surprising, again, not in terms
- 49:56Speaker 1: of where the team is actually at right now, but
- 49:58Speaker 1: just certain aspects of the team. Like you talked about
- 50:02Speaker 1: that third line and we're we're gonna be get into
- 50:03Speaker 1: that in a little bit as well. But you mentioned
- 50:06Speaker 1: the goaltending. I do want to get into that with
- 50:08Speaker 1: you because last week Len and I we were talking
- 50:10Speaker 1: about the goaltending and how terrible it has been. I
- 50:14Speaker 1: know that you have been talking about it as well.
- 50:16Speaker 1: In fact, Charlie Bill and you you've talked about on
- 50:19Speaker 1: a phl Y podcast. The guys on Broadstreet Hockey podcast
- 50:23Speaker 1: as well have talked about it. It's being talked about everywhere,
- 50:27Speaker 1: how bad things have gotten with the goalies in front
- 50:29Speaker 1: of the net. And while the average save percentage really stinks.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I mean, I just don't think it's gonna improve anytime
- 50:36Speaker 1: soon here. And yeah, we can you know, I always
- 50:40Speaker 1: use I love to use this phrase. We can always
- 50:41Speaker 1: cry over spilt milk, but what has done is done.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Carter Hart really screwed this organization and this team, and
- 50:48Speaker 1: we're seeing the ramifications of not having that long term,
- 50:51Speaker 1: developmental and talented guy in front of the net, So Kelly,
- 50:56Speaker 1: after this season, getting an NHL caliber goalie, it's not
- 51:01Speaker 1: gonna be the easiest thing in the world to scope out.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Danny Brier is going to have a tough time. I
- 51:07Speaker 1: think personally, maybe you can convince me otherwise, and it's
- 51:09Speaker 1: not gonna be a cheap position to address either. So
- 51:12Speaker 1: where does this organization go from here in terms of
- 51:16Speaker 1: the goalie of the future.
- 51:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it's kind of an interesting place that they're in
- 51:21Speaker 4: because you look at like Carson Bjarnison and Zorragon over
- 51:25Speaker 4: in Russia. The two of them seem like they're going
- 51:30Speaker 4: to be pretty good goaltenders. Like, obviously goaltending makes no sense.
- 51:34Speaker 4: These guys are good one day, they're bad at the
- 51:36Speaker 4: next day, Like they could be really good in the
- 51:37Speaker 4: AHL the NHL, I don't know. So it's always, you know,
- 51:41Speaker 4: a crapshoot, But it seems like they have two guys
- 51:46Speaker 4: in Jarnison and Zebragon that in the next two to
- 51:50Speaker 4: three years could probably be in a position to start
- 51:55Speaker 4: to crack the NHL lineup. So I personally don't don't
- 52:00Speaker 4: want to see them go out and you know, spend
- 52:03Speaker 4: a lot of assets to try and get a goaltender
- 52:07Speaker 4: into trade. I know a lot of people are like,
- 52:09Speaker 4: you have to do something right now because it's you know,
- 52:11Speaker 4: killing the season. But like, do you because it's kind
- 52:14Speaker 4: of like the perfect tank thing, right, Like the guys
- 52:17Speaker 4: in front are playing okay, yeah, they're pretty good, and
- 52:20Speaker 4: the goaltending is tanking the season. So I mean, is
- 52:23Speaker 4: that good? I don't know, it's probably not great, Like
- 52:26Speaker 4: you know, for the psyche of the guys in front
- 52:28Speaker 4: of it. We're playing really well. We can't win a
- 52:31Speaker 4: game because nobody can make a s up. But I
- 52:35Speaker 4: wonder if the problem is that they seem to really
- 52:39Speaker 4: think that Sam Yerson can be the guy. I'm not
- 52:44Speaker 4: convinced that we've seen enough of him to know that
- 52:49Speaker 4: for sure, Like if you really think about it, like
- 52:52Speaker 4: we've just seen like little tiny bits of him being
- 52:54Speaker 4: actually really good, right.
- 52:56Speaker 1: We haven't seen that forty forty five game type of.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Thing him being bad?
- 53:01Speaker 4: Right, it's really bad, and a lot of him being injured,
- 53:05Speaker 4: and the injuries are growing injuries, which for a goaltender really,
- 53:10Speaker 4: so I do worry that they're like too invested in
- 53:15Speaker 4: him being the guy to like turn away from that.
- 53:20Speaker 4: But I also don't want them to go out and
- 53:23Speaker 4: try to get someone like with Term or someone that
- 53:26Speaker 4: makes a lot of money or you know, trading picks
- 53:29Speaker 4: or whatever to get a guy like I would rather
- 53:31Speaker 4: they just kind of like, as long as they can
- 53:34Speaker 4: ride this out and kind of hope maybe it it
- 53:38Speaker 4: improves to even just like average or a little bit
- 53:41Speaker 4: below average, like Fodotov has been looking a little bit better,
- 53:47Speaker 4: So that's promising as far as the backup goes. But
- 53:52Speaker 4: I kind of think that given that they didn't get
- 53:56Speaker 4: someone this off season, I mean they got off, but
- 54:00Speaker 4: they didn't there were a few UFA guys that they
- 54:02Speaker 4: could have gotten this offseason to back up Airson that
- 54:04Speaker 4: would have been definitely a more dependable choice than a
- 54:07Speaker 4: guy from Russia that you've never seen in North America. Ror.
- 54:12Speaker 4: It kind of makes me think that they're also like
- 54:14Speaker 4: looking two or three years down the road and thinking, Okay,
- 54:18Speaker 4: we know this team is not going to be actually
- 54:21Speaker 4: competing for at least two or three years. Like they
- 54:24Speaker 4: got to get a center, they got to shore up
- 54:26Speaker 4: the defense, like Mitchkoff needs to come along. You got
- 54:29Speaker 4: to get Luchenko, see if he's a thing. Like there's
- 54:31Speaker 4: a lot of moving parts before this team is actually good.
- 54:35Speaker 4: And I wonder if they're doing the same thing I'm doing,
- 54:37Speaker 4: which is looking two years down the road and being like, Okay,
- 54:39Speaker 4: we just need enough band aids to get us through
- 54:43Speaker 4: till one of these kids gets over here, and like
- 54:46Speaker 4: we're crossing our fingers right that they're going to be
- 54:49Speaker 4: as good as they seem like they're going to be.
- 54:51Speaker 1: I hate the crossing the fingers.
- 54:52Speaker 4: I hate it a lot of crossing our fingers. I
- 54:55Speaker 4: feel like the whole Flyers organization does a lot of
- 54:58Speaker 4: crossing their fingers. It's just one of those things where
- 55:01Speaker 4: it's like I, like I said on the phl Y Show,
- 55:05Speaker 4: like if you go and get a goalie, like to
- 55:07Speaker 4: what end? Yeah, like you have a better goaltender? What
- 55:10Speaker 4: are we doing? We're not winning the Stanley Cup? Like
- 55:13Speaker 4: if they sneak into the playoffs, are they even winning around?
- 55:16Speaker 4: I don't know. So it's like, what's the point of
- 55:20Speaker 4: blowing assets that you might be able to use on
- 55:23Speaker 4: something else to get a goaltender, just to like what
- 55:27Speaker 4: bump you up a few points? Like, what is the point,
- 55:29Speaker 4: you know what I mean? Yeah, so I kind of
- 55:30Speaker 4: don't want them to do anything.
- 55:32Speaker 1: I feel like it takes the oh, I almost use
- 55:34Speaker 1: the R word, and I should not use the R word.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Like I said, the building blocks of the future. It
- 55:40Speaker 1: feels like it may be taking that, I don't know,
- 55:42Speaker 1: maybe an extra year or two if they don't address
- 55:45Speaker 1: the goalie position. But I'm with you, I'm completely with you.
- 55:49Speaker 1: If it's tanking this season just by having these goalies
- 55:52Speaker 1: in front of the net, then you know what, let's
- 55:55Speaker 1: let's let's do that at this point. So I think
- 55:59Speaker 1: there's you put it on the scale and it kind
- 56:02Speaker 1: of balances itself out. And that's why I'm with you
- 56:05Speaker 1: where I would just rather have this quote tank of
- 56:08Speaker 1: a season and then see what happens maybe two years
- 56:11Speaker 1: from now. That's my r.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:14Speaker 4: It's just like it's kind of a weird place that
- 56:16Speaker 4: they're in because they're not really satisfying the tank people,
- 56:21Speaker 4: because team in front of the goalies is a little
- 56:23Speaker 4: bit too good to be fully thanking, and they're not
- 56:26Speaker 4: really satisfying the people that want them to win because
- 56:28Speaker 4: they can't win games because the goalies are bad. So
- 56:30Speaker 4: they're stuck in this weird like mushy middle, which I
- 56:32Speaker 4: know is the place that makes the Flyers fans the
- 56:35Speaker 4: most angry.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Yes, but I do.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Think that, like the positives of the team in front
- 56:42Speaker 4: of the net looking better in spots kind of outweighs
- 56:47Speaker 4: the negative of not getting as high of a draft
- 56:51Speaker 4: position as you might otherwise.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Well, let's talk about some of those positives here,
- 56:55Speaker 1: because yes, folks, there are positives with this Philadelphia Flyers team.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Let's talk about Bobby Brink here. Arguably the most improved
- 57:03Speaker 1: player on this team is where a little over a
- 57:06Speaker 1: little over midway point of the season. He's on the
- 57:11Speaker 1: third line. You mentioned the third line, He and no Kates,
- 57:16Speaker 1: no Kates. Yes, they've been fantastic. And with regard to
- 57:22Speaker 1: Bobby Brink, he's been the probably one of the best
- 57:25Speaker 1: players on this team over the past month here at
- 57:28Speaker 1: this point, I mean, he has been true tremendously in
- 57:31Speaker 1: terms of his development over the past year. He's such
- 57:34Speaker 1: a great facilitator. Kelly, what have you seen with his
- 57:38Speaker 1: game that gives you some hope that he may be
- 57:40Speaker 1: able to get even better than what we have been seeing,
- 57:43Speaker 1: or do you have any concerns with Bobby Brink at
- 57:46Speaker 1: this point.
- 57:47Speaker 4: So I think, like the big thing with him is
- 57:49Speaker 4: he came into this season like he definitely put on
- 57:51Speaker 4: some weight, Like he's a little tank. Now, yeah, he's
- 57:54Speaker 4: not a big guy, so he's never going to be
- 57:56Speaker 4: big big, but he definitely put on some weight, and
- 57:58Speaker 4: I think that's kind of helped him, you know, be
- 58:01Speaker 4: able to you know, be better along the boards when
- 58:03Speaker 4: the puck battles, that kind of stuff that he he
- 58:05Speaker 4: was maybe struggling with a little bit before. I think,
- 58:10Speaker 4: I Okay, I'm saying this as someone who really likes
- 58:13Speaker 4: Bobby Brink, Like I really like him and I want
- 58:15Speaker 4: him to be a part of this team, and I
- 58:17Speaker 4: have a lot of fun watching him. I'm not sure
- 58:21Speaker 4: if he is anything more than like a nice piece,
- 58:27Speaker 4: you know what I mean. Like I don't know that.
- 58:28Speaker 4: Like I feel like I think Noah Kids is driving
- 58:32Speaker 4: that line for sure, because he's been the last like
- 58:36Speaker 4: two months just insane, what's going on with him. I
- 58:41Speaker 4: also think that that line has benefited from being the
- 58:45Speaker 4: one line that John Twrdorella refuses to mess with because
- 58:49Speaker 4: it's been good and it's almost like letting guys play
- 58:53Speaker 4: together for a while might be a good thing. They
- 58:56Speaker 4: develop chemistry, you know, they figure it out and they
- 59:00Speaker 4: start playing well together. So Bobby Brink, for me, I
- 59:04Speaker 4: would like to see him scoring a little bit more.
- 59:07Speaker 4: He had that goal last night last night. Yeah, last night,
- 59:11Speaker 4: that was the Columbus game. Whenever people are listening to this,
- 59:15Speaker 4: that was great. It was It was great to see
- 59:17Speaker 4: him finally get a goal because it's usually Kate's. But
- 59:22Speaker 4: I do like that we've seen him take a step forward.
- 59:26Speaker 4: You can't deny that he is better than he was
- 59:29Speaker 4: last season, and that's important if he's going to find
- 59:32Speaker 4: a place on this team, and it really seems like
- 59:35Speaker 4: he has. Like if the Flyers are using John Tortorella
- 59:38Speaker 4: as like the gauge of who belongs and who doesn't,
- 59:42Speaker 4: these three guys, he clearly really likes them. Kate's certain
- 59:46Speaker 4: Brink and so that bodes well for Bring's future with
- 59:49Speaker 4: the team, and if he could continue to take some
- 59:52Speaker 4: steps forward, maybe score a little bit more than he
- 59:55Speaker 4: has been because I kind I was kind of hoping,
- 59:58Speaker 4: like we were kind of sold like he was going
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: to be our cole call Field, Like we drafted York
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: and Pawfield, but we got this other little guy that's
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: going to score a bunch of goals for us. I
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: would like to see a little bit more of the
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: goal scoring, but it's hard to deny the fact that
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: that line has been an absolute joy to watch, and
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Brink is obviously a big part of that.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Absolutely. Again, folks, we're talking to Kelly Hinkel from broad
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Street Hockey dot com. Head on over to Broadstreet Hockey
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: dot com. They have fantastic content. I am a subscriber,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: and you should be as well if you are into
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Flyers. Moving along here, we know what Travis
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Konnecty has done this season. Travis Sandheim has certainly been
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: the best defenseman on this team. I mean, after two
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: seasons ago, it's amazing he's still on the team. I
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: thought Torts was going to get rid of him two
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: seasons ago, met ve Mitchkoff. He's been fun to watch.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: And I'm wondering, Kelly, do you think, or I should say,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: who do you think is the most underrated player here
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: on the Flyers team at this point? Perhaps a guy
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: who really isn't getting too much love, who we should
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: really start honing in on a little bit here.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: So this is definitely a recent development. Okay, this was
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: not the case even like a month ago. But Yegor
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: Zamula has been pretty good over the last month, Like
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: his numbers have been good. He's looked good on the ice,
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: and I think a lot of people, like I was,
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: was done, Like I was like, all right, I've seen
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: enough of Zamola, we know what he is.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I wrote him off in November.
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: Yeah, let me see please bring me a meil Andre like,
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: I want to watch him. He seems fun. I want
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: to see what he can do. I'm done with the
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: Zamula experiment. Let's move on. But over the last like
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: month or so, he's been he's been pretty good. And
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: I don't think a lot of people are either noticing
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: or talking about it, because I think a lot of
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: people were like us, and we were just like, especially
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: after you saw Andre and what he was bringing today ice,
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: I think it was just like enough with Zimula. So
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: I think people just kind of wrote him off, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: so no one's really noticing that he's playing better. I
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: know we're going to talk about him in a second.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: But Risto, like as someone who like certified Rasmus, were
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: still ligne in hater yeh slash Denier, like I didn't
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: want him on this team. I did not like the trade,
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: I did not like the contract, Like there was no
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: part of me that wanted anything to do with rasmussti
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: ligne and last season. In this season, he's been good,
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: Like he's been arguably the Flyer, second best defenseman this season.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: And that's certainly not something that I expected. And I
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: think anyone who says they did expect it is probably lying.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, they are lying. I mean, give me, I
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: remember our conversations from just a couple of years ago,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: and we're like, this trade fucking stinks. This trade stinks,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: and he was stinking it up all of a sudden.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I don't know what it is. I don't know if
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the hockey gods, I don't know what it is. Some
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: sort of energy that's going on at the Wells Vargo
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Center has penetrated his body and gotten him to this point.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Hockey is weird, Hockey is bizarre. We know that as
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: hockey fans. But I didn't expect this in a million
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: years from from Risto.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: No.
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: And this is one of those things where like we
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: weren't wrong before right, he's stunk.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Yeh, he sunk.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: We got him. He's stunk for the first season he
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: was here, sdunk when they gave him the extension. Yeah,
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: like he was bad, Like we weren't wrong about it.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: He's just he's just fixed his entire game. I don't
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: know if Bradshaw's a wizard or what, but they've fixed
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: him and he's been very good. And I'm not sure because,
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: like you were saying, Travis Sandheim has been so good,
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: I'm not sure a lot of people are talking about
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: Risto being so good as well, and being such a
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: steady presence on the defense. Yeah, and I think he deserves,
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: you know, he deserves a little bit of love for
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: it because he's been pretty good and of course stuck him.
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: You know, it's not so bad that he's like this now.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Absolutely well, let's get into it. Let's get into some
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: more Risto conversation here, because it seems like Rasmus versus
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: layne In is the top trade candidate at this point
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: here in mid February or I'm sorry, mid January here.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: I mean, he's, like we're talking about he's quietly playing
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: some of the best hockey of his career. But the
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: front office they probably want to clear some cap space.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: So would you agree or do you see another player
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: perhaps or two that could be a top candidate to
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: be traded before the trade deadline? I mean, I think
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Rasmus versus lane In obviously the top candidate. I think
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: at this point, I don't know what are your thoughts
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: here in terms of the trade deadline? Who might who
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: might be heading out the door?
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: So I mean, like I'm with you, Like I feel like,
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: if you are Danny Brier and you're like actively shopping
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: a guy to try to get some assets, yeah, it
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: makes sense for it to be him because he's been
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: very good. He's very large, he's right handed, like, he's
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: all of the things that nhlgms absolutely love. And I
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: feel like it's a very easy sell for a team
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: heading into the playoffs that needs a little help on defense.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: Like look at like, of course you want this guy.
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: He's huge, he's you know, tough supposedly, although I don't
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: really see that from him at all. He's big, you
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: know whatever. So I feel like, if you're going to
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: actively shop a guy, that's the guy that makes the
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: most sense because and also, as you said, it clears
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: a bunch of cash based off the books. Yep, will
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: be a huge help going forward because like, let's be honest,
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: he's been really good. He's really good now, but like
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: I don't if he reverted back to old Risto, like
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: would you be shocked exactly?
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Like how long is this going to last?
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: And then we're stuck with him and that contract for
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: you know, who knows how I guess three in the
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: next three years.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: Yes, So it would be good to.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: Just you know, get some You could probably get a
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: nice couple of picks for him. It seems like Joel
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: Farrabee and Scott Lawton's names are still kicking around on
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: like the national trade boards and the rumors and stuff.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: Scott Lawton I've heard a lot rumored like as a
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: Leaf's target, Like the Leafs might want a Scott Lawton
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: heading into the playoffs, which like why wouldn't they if
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: you need some center depth and you need like, you know,
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: the leadership guy, the you know, the glue guy. But
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: I kind of think like the Flyers don't want to
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: trade Scott Lawton, and Scott Lawton doesn't want to be traded.
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: And it seems pretty clear over the last year that like,
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: while Sean Couturier is the captain, I feel like Scott
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: Lawton is like the leader of that locker room, and
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: I think it's going to be really tough for the
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: Flyers to remove that presence from the team. When they're
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: so focused on culture, yes, and the locker room culture
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: and what the team means as a whole, it seems
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: like Scott Lawton is an extremely central part of all
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: of that, and I think it would be very difficult
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: to like look at that group of guys and be like,
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: we're taking away your best friend for like a second
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: round pick or whatever and sorry.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: So I feel like if they were to trade him,
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: they would have to be overpaid. And I don't know
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: that a team would overpay for Scott Lawton. I feel
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: like he is a nice piece that you would like
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: to have for a playoff push, especially if you needed
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: some depth, But I don't know that he's a guy
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: that you would want to like overpay for. And I
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: think the Flyers would need to get a crazy amount
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: of value in a trade for Scott Lawton for them
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: to be able to justify it to themselves and to
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: the rest of the team. Farman's interesting because I feel
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: like you're selling him at the lowest he's ever been. Yeah,
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: right now, Like if you're selling him now, like it's
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: not I can't imagine you're going to get great value
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: for him. So like, are you just trading him because
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: you don't think he fits and you want him off
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: the team, so you're just gonna like take whatever you
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: can get for him, or is he like I could
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: it would make more sense to me if he was
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: like part of a larger package to get, like a
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: center or something that would because it does seem like
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: Faraby's having a hard time finding his place on this team,
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: and I feel like John Tortorella only tolerates that for
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: so long. Like Towards seems to be the kind of
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: guy that wants to find where you slot in his lineup.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: He wants to know where you go and what you
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: do while you're there. Yeah, and Farby's been all over
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: the lineup and he's been given a lot of chances
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: to find his game this season and he just hasn't
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: done it. And that stinks because when he is good,
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: he's a lot of fun to watch, but he just
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: hasn't been very good this season.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Yeah, really quick. Going back to Lawton, Yes, I really
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: think it's important because you and I over the years
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: we've talked about like the good locker room guys, and
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: at times it's like, Okay, they've made a trade or
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: thinking about trading a guy who maybe like a good
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: locker room presence. But I think this is really important
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: with Lawton and where this team is at right now,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: the building blocks of the future, because there's something to
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: be said for that right now. I don't think they're
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: gonna trade him because of that, you know, Like you said,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: I think he made a great point with regard to
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: you know, Coctoria as a captain, but the real like
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: leadership that is coming from the team is from Scott Lawton,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: and I just don't think that the team is going
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: to do that. And I'm sorry that I interrupted you
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: with regard to Farrabee, but I just wanted to before
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: I forgot I just wanted to bring up the Lawton
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: aspect of us talking about the potential trade with him,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: which I honestly don't think is gonna happen. I hope
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: it doesn't happen because I think he's too integral in
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: terms of that leadership he brings because that's going to
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: be part of this foundational building block puzzle. It's part
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: of the puzzle, and they I think they're gonna need
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: to keep.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: Him, so yeah.
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: And I mean, like as someone who has like questioned
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: this obsession with culture that the Flyers seem to have
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: just because it's like, but.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: There's still questions about the culture I think in so
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: many ways, but this is not a question Scott Lawton
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: is not a question in terms of his leadership in
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: terms of building the culture.
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: But also like you see like Chicago, like, yeah, they
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: have Connor Bdard, but like the absolute disaster. They're terrible,
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: and like like the tank people like is that what
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: you like?
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: Is that?
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: Do you think that that's like a good way to
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: build a team? Like it remains to be seen if
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: they're going to build a good hockey team around Badard.
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: I'm assuming eventually they figure it out, but like for
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: the next three four years, it seems like it's going
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: to be pretty bleak. Yeah, in Chicago, And then you
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: have the Rangers. Their locker room is an absolute disaster,
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: and that's a really talented team that a lot of
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: people thought was going to be pushing for the top
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: of the Eastern Conference. They're a disaster. That's a culture problem.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: You have the Ducks that have a lot of really
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: exciting young players, but they seem to hate their coach
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: and no one seems to know what they're doing. Culture's
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: a mess, Like what's that team going to look like
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: in three or four years? So, like as Tortorella and
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: bre Aaron Jones have been doing this culture building, like,
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: I'm starting to see like, okay, you know what it
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: is important? Yeah, for this to like be a place
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: that guys want to play and to be, you know,
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: an organization focused on winning and not trying to lose.
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: Like I really do think it makes a difference. So yeah,
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: I don't think they're going to trade scot A Loton
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: just because I don't think that anyone's going to give
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: them the price that they would want to take for him.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Yeah, A great way to in that particular conversation. But
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: before I let you go, Kelly, and as we're running
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: a little low on time here, I want to get
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: into John Tortorella here. I want to get into how
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: John Tortorella is really handling the development of players as
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: the Flyers are are again looking at future foundational pieces
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: because over a period of time, I mean it's fair,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: certainly to criticize his frequent line shift, shifting and shuffling
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: and sometimes overly demanding nature, which can be I think
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: disruptive to the team and to the guys in the
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: locker room again from time to time, But I think
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: we've also seen some motivational aspects of his coaching playing
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: a positive role with some of the talent on this team.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: So how would you assess John Tortorella, how he's been
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: handling his coaching duties and how it may translate to
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: future success for this Flyer's team.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: So I do think he's done a really good job
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: laying this foundation that we were just talking about. I
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: don't think that you can deny the fact that he
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: has built a team that works hard, plays for each other,
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff, And I do think that
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: he I don't think he's a bad coach. I just
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: I'm starting to wonder if like he's done his job
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: yes here and like maybe it's time for him to
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: like move upstairs to the front office or take some
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: other kind of role that's not being the guy behind
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: the bench, Because.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: I I I wonder like sometimes about his uses of miatchkough,
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: Like if I see a power play without Matve Mietchkoff
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: on it, I'm like, like, what are we doing here?
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: Like, what are we doing? He should be on every
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: power play, he should start every three on three overtime,
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: Like this is this kid. If any of this is
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: gonna work, this kid has to be the cornerstone of
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: all of it. So I want to see the most
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: of him, and I want him to have the most
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: opportunity to figure out his game in the NHL. And sometimes,
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: you know, I'm looking at him getting eight minutes of
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: ice time or eleven minutes of ice time or something,
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: and I'm like, what are like, what are we doing here?
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: And and so I do kind of wonder if, like
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: maybe it's time to transition to more of like a
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: player's coach, like a guy that understands like everyone's dream
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: coach at this point is David Carl Yeah yeah, So
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: I mean, like that would be amazing, But I don't
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: know how you're going to pry that guy away from
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: the cushy situation that he now.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Like I feel really quick, I feel like we've gotten
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: better than we initially thought from John Tortorella, but that
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: it's only going to be able to go so far,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: and it probably has gone as far as it probably
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: can go with the current situation where it is.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, Like I said, I feel like he's done
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: his job here, and he did a very good job.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: But I do wonder if it's not time to transition
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: into like the next stage of the game. I don't
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: know what that is, but I do start to wonder
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: because you know, Towards seems to have a three four
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: year shelf life, like that seems to be it for him, yep,
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: and we're getting there, So I don't know, but I
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: think it's going to have to be his decision, Like
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: I don't think unless things start to go really really
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: bad and he like completely loses the room Brian Jones
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: asking him to stop coaching. Yeah, so it'll be interesting
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: to see what happens. But I do think he's done
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: his job here. I think it's it's been an overall
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: positive experience, the John Totorrell experience, but I am starting
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: to think that maybe we're reaching the end of the
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: useful life of it.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Great way into the conversation again, folks, Kelly Hankle from
