- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads, The
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neurolink.
- 0:13I'm your host Will Walden. SpaceX is preparing for the 7th
- 0:17flight test of its Starship vehicle, officially designated
- 0:20as Starship Flight Test 7, scheduled to launch no earlier
- 0:25than January 10th, 2025 at 4:00 PM CDT from Starbase, Texas.
- 0:31Now the mission will aim to test critical upgrades while
- 0:34continuing to refine Starship's recovery and reuse systems.
- 0:39Now this flight will also feature the use of Block 2
- 0:43hardware, which is a significant step that the Starship has
- 0:47developed over the course of many years.
- 0:50Now the upcoming mission will employ booster 14B14 and ship 33
- 0:56or S33 marking in the first flight of a Block 2 Starship.
- 1:00This test will follow a sub orbital flight profile similar
- 1:05to earlier tests with Booster 14 attempting a return to launch
- 1:10site catch by the launch towers, chopstick arms and Ship 33
- 1:15expected to perform a soft splashdown in the Indian Ocean
- 1:20now. If successful, this will be the
- 1:22second catch of a Super Heavy booster following progress made
- 1:27during earlier tests. And the timeline for the mission
- 1:31was confirmed through an advisory released on December 27
- 1:37of 2024, with a backup launch window extending until about
- 1:42January 15th, 2025, and Elon Musk reaffirmed the primary date
- 1:47via social media on December 30th.
- 1:49Here's some facts for you. November 6, 2024, SpaceX
- 1:52confirmed the use of a Block 2 Starship in this test.
- 1:55Enhancements include redesigned forward flaps, larger propellant
- 2:00tanks, and advanced thermal protection systems.
- 2:03November 19th, 2024 Elon Musk announced plans for an final
- 2:08ocean splashdown test after Flight 6.
- 2:11Based on its results, future tests may attempt ship recovery
- 2:15via the launch tower. November 25th, 2024 NASA
- 2:19documentation filed with the FAA suggested a targeted launch
- 2:23window beginning January 11th, 2025, which has been shifted to
- 2:27January 10th and December 3rd of 2024.
- 2:30The FCC approved communication systems for the mission, which
- 2:38is supporting operations from December 14th, 2024 all the way
- 2:42through June 14th of 2025. December 27th, 2024, The
- 2:46advisory for Flight 7 confirmed the primary launch date of
- 2:49January 10th, 2025, with possible alternative launch
- 2:53times later on in the week. December 30th, 2024.
- 2:57Elon Musk confirmed the net no earlier than launch date via X
- 3:02Now. This mission will test a suite
- 3:04of critical upgrades to the Starship system.
- 3:07Key improvements include Chip 33 will debut redesigned forward
- 3:11flaps to improve heat shield durability and re entry
- 3:15performance, a larger propellant capacity, and advanced heat
- 3:19shield materials aimed to enhance thermal protection.
- 3:22Engineers will evaluate modular heat shield tiles and metallic
- 3:26alternatives with active cooling features to address previous
- 3:30vulnerabilities. Now a secondary thermal
- 3:33protection layer will be tested as a backup mechanism.
- 3:37Booster 14 and Ship 33 feature increased propellant capacity,
- 3:41vacuum insulated feed lines and upgraded Raptor engine systems
- 3:46in space. Relight demonstrations similar
- 3:49to those conducted during Flight 6 are also planned.
- 3:54There's new systems that provide increased redundance and real
- 3:58time telemetry capabilities for this flight.
- 4:00The avionics redesign also includes 30 plus cameras and
- 4:04smart batteries capable of managing 2.7 megawatts of power.
- 4:09Now this is interesting. The mission will release 10
- 4:12Starlink simulators into a suborbital trajectory to test
- 4:16Starships payload deployment capabilities.
- 4:18That's what I'm most excited about.
- 4:20The FAA emphasized that the mission will proceed only if all
- 4:23safety, environmental, and technical requirements are met.
- 4:27In its statement, the agency highlighted that they said the
- 4:31FAA continues to increase efficiencies in licensing
- 4:35activities to meet the needs of the commercial space
- 4:39transportation industry while ensuring public safety.
- 4:43Elon Musk and SpaceX have reiterated their commitment to
- 4:46public safety as well, with the boosters return requiring strict
- 4:51health checks along the way before the catch attempt.
- 4:54Now, if conditions are not favorable or not met, the
- 4:57booster will divert to a controlled landing and a
- 5:01splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
- 5:03Sonic booms, also generated during the boosters descent, are
- 5:09expected to have minimal impact on surrounding areas.
- 5:13Now, did you know that reusable spacecraft have a long history,
- 5:16beginning with NASA's SpaceX Shuttle program 1981 to 2011?
- 5:21While partially reusable, the Shuttle required extensive
- 5:24refurbishment between flights, limiting its cost effectiveness.
- 5:28Also, Space XS Falcon 9 advanced the concept by enabling the
- 5:32first stage to land and be reused with minimal
- 5:36refurbishment. Now, since 2015, Falcon 9 has
- 5:40completed over 250 launches with more than 200 successful
- 5:45landings. Starship aims to surpass these
- 5:48milestones by achieving complete and full reusability for both
- 5:52the booster and the upper stage, making it the most advanced
- 5:57reusable spacecraft system ever designed.
- 6:00Now, following Flight 7, SpaceX will aim for further refinements
- 6:03during Flight Test 8, including a potential first attempt to
- 6:07catch the Starship upper stage with the launch tower, and the
- 6:12data collected from these missions will inform plans for
- 6:16orbital crew flights and lunar landings under NASA's Artemis
- 6:21program. Competition in the reusable
- 6:22rocket sector is intensifying, too.
- 6:24Blue Origins New Glen in China's Long March 8th are being
- 6:29designed with reusability in mind, though both lag behind
- 6:34Starship and testing and operational capabilities and
- 6:37readiness. The 7th Flight Test of Starship
- 6:40marks another important step toward achieving a fully
- 6:42reusable space transportation system.
- 6:45By integrating hardware upgrades and addressing challenges from
- 6:50prior tests, this mission will play a key role in shaping the
- 6:54future of Spacex's Starship and Boca Chica star base Texas.
