- 0:00Speaker 1: Someone said that they did pee themselves a little, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: I was wondering, is this a common occurrence?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Would you?
- 0:10Speaker 1: Would you suggest people wear some sort of a corvincy
- 0:14Speaker 1: pad or diapers?
- 0:15Speaker 3: So last weekend I didn't know this was possible either.
- 0:23Speaker 3: One of our longtime haunters who scared someone so bad
- 0:27Speaker 3: that they left his room through an emergency exit, walked
- 0:31Speaker 3: the exterior wall of the exhibit hall and.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Hey, creepy people, we have a fun spooky season bonus
- 0:46Speaker 1: episode for you today. So if you're in the Portland area,
- 0:49Speaker 1: this might give you an idea of something fun and
- 0:54Speaker 1: very very creepy and scary to do this October. Today,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm with Ira and Jeff from Underhill Haunted House. It's
- 1:04Speaker 1: in downtown Portland at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The open
- 1:09Speaker 1: times and dates are seven to ten every Friday and
- 1:12Speaker 1: Saturday in October, and Halloween, which is a Thursday, with
- 1:17Speaker 1: some other special dates will go over a little bit
- 1:20Speaker 1: later on. This is your fifth year as a haunted
- 1:25Speaker 1: house in Portland.
- 1:27Speaker 4: It gets a little confusing. I believe it's our fifth year.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Is we missed a year due to COVID? Oh?
- 1:32Speaker 5: So yeah, I think don't we don't count that year.
- 1:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I believe you're right. I believe it's our fifth
- 1:37Speaker 6: year here.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But this is a fundraiser for the Portland based Canon
- 1:42Speaker 1: Shakespeare Company.
- 1:43Speaker 6: Yes, the Canon Shakespeare Company.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But is so awesome. Do the actors and people involved
- 1:49Speaker 1: with the Shakespeare Company also participate in the Haunt Yes?
- 1:54Speaker 6: Well I'm one of them. I'm the artistic director for
- 1:56Speaker 6: the company.
- 1:56Speaker 4: And we're still a small company, so there's a lot
- 1:58Speaker 4: of multiple so you'll have people who are acting, but
- 2:02Speaker 4: when it comes to the Canon itself, they're also doing
- 2:05Speaker 4: marketing and they're also doing the secretary and.
- 2:07Speaker 1: All of that, so it's a lot of work. Yeah,
- 2:11Speaker 1: is this your biggest fundraiser?
- 2:14Speaker 4: Well, this is This is our only fundraiser for the Canon,
- 2:18Speaker 4: and this house was a hunted house before we started
- 2:21Speaker 4: doing it as a fundraiser for other companies.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Twilight Theater.
- 2:25Speaker 4: We did as a fundraiser for Twilight Theater Company for
- 2:27Speaker 4: a couple of years and then switched to the Canon
- 2:30Speaker 4: Shakespeare Company.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's such a good idea, I think to do a
- 2:33Speaker 1: haunted house as a fundraiser. I think it's so cool
- 2:37Speaker 1: because it's like one time a year and then you're
- 2:40Speaker 1: kind of set for the year, hopefully set for the year, right.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Well, and I like that with the Haunted Houses, we're
- 2:48Speaker 4: creating an opportunity for just more community, for people to
- 2:54Speaker 4: come in and have opportunities that they otherwise might not have.
- 2:58Speaker 6: To learn things, to be a part of things. It's
- 3:00Speaker 6: a lot of fun.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Speaking of opportunities, I wanted to ask you about some
- 3:05Speaker 1: of the volunteer opportunities you guys have, either now or
- 3:10Speaker 1: for people for next year.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Maybe well that would be Jeff our cast manager, amongst
- 3:15Speaker 4: many other things that he does.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean we have, you know, myriad volunteer opportunities.
- 3:23Speaker 3: You know, whether whether you want to act or just
- 3:27Speaker 3: scare people with loud noisemakers, or if you want to
- 3:30Speaker 3: come in and paint or try special effects makeup, or
- 3:38Speaker 3: you know, try your handed building sets or from cleaning
- 3:44Speaker 3: to sounds, costuming, costuming to lighting, two planning sort of
- 3:50Speaker 3: anything that you would like to come down and try
- 3:53Speaker 3: to help with.
- 3:55Speaker 2: We're welcoming.
- 3:57Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So you said, do the casting do you have like
- 4:01Speaker 1: auditions this year?
- 4:04Speaker 2: We're trying something new.
- 4:05Speaker 3: We're trying a new format with one of our houses
- 4:08Speaker 3: that involves sort of more storytelling and more sort of structured,
- 4:15Speaker 3: a structured plot through the house rather than your typical
- 4:19Speaker 3: sort of jump scares and things you know, coming out
- 4:23Speaker 3: at you from the dark and loud noises and things.
- 4:27Speaker 3: There's four elemental witches that kind of stop you and
- 4:30Speaker 3: tell you are more storytellers rather than your typical haunted house.
- 4:35Speaker 3: So for those roles in particular, we did have short
- 4:40Speaker 3: sort of auditions outside of that. You know, we are
- 4:43Speaker 3: a volunteer haunted house, so we take everybody. You know,
- 4:47Speaker 3: your want to be here is a lot of times
- 4:51Speaker 3: greater than somebody who's the most talented actor in the
- 4:54Speaker 3: world but doesn't want to be here exactly. You want
- 4:58Speaker 3: to be here, you want to help us, you want
- 4:59Speaker 3: to scare people. We've been involved in theater long enough
- 5:02Speaker 3: that we're sure we can either help get you to
- 5:06Speaker 3: the place where you are talented enough to scare people,
- 5:09Speaker 3: or you fit you into a role that you're already
- 5:14Speaker 3: great at. You have sixty or so roles. You can
- 5:16Speaker 3: see behind me the whiteboard which has a third you know,
- 5:21Speaker 3: that's just representative of one of our houses, one of
- 5:24Speaker 3: the sections of characters. Oh wow, so yeah, that's a
- 5:28Speaker 3: you know we can, we can find a place for you.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and I've I've worked with people that have
- 5:34Speaker 4: struggled with you know, they want to be a part
- 5:35Speaker 4: of it and they want to act, but they're just
- 5:38Speaker 4: they've never done it before, so the nerves get to
- 5:40Speaker 4: them and they struggle with that. One girl in particular,
- 5:44Speaker 4: I had, she could not get loud, like she could
- 5:47Speaker 4: barely get her voice above a whisper, and the more
- 5:50Speaker 4: people were around and just it was, it became impossible
- 5:55Speaker 4: for her, the worse of God for her. We ended
- 5:58Speaker 4: up putting her in a completely dark room and then
- 6:02Speaker 4: give her a costume and makeup that completely covered her,
- 6:07Speaker 4: so that in the dark room she became invisible to
- 6:09Speaker 4: where all she had to do was open her eyes
- 6:11Speaker 4: and smile. And after about a week of that she
- 6:16Speaker 4: found her voice and towards the end of that season, yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 4: she was a banshee.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Oh wow.
- 6:23Speaker 4: My thing what I like doing with people in volunteers,
- 6:26Speaker 4: especially the actors, is people who've always wanted to but
- 6:28Speaker 4: have no experience. It goes back to acting one on one.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You know, if it's a mask or if it's makeup,
- 6:36Speaker 4: you get it on them and it sets them free.
- 6:39Speaker 4: You get to see the timidity and the self doubt
- 6:44Speaker 4: and the fear fall away, because when you're covered, you're
- 6:47Speaker 4: not yourself. Yeah, so you get to explore. And we've
- 6:51Speaker 4: got people who just all day long they want to
- 6:54Speaker 4: do is what we call a pop scare. So they
- 6:56Speaker 4: just come out from behind something or a slam panel
- 6:58Speaker 4: opens or or whatever, and they're just come out and
- 7:02Speaker 4: attack and then they retreat and they're gone again. To
- 7:05Speaker 4: people who like with Jeff what he was saying about
- 7:08Speaker 4: the Witch's Book, much more character.
- 7:11Speaker 6: So it's engaging.
- 7:12Speaker 4: There's an element of improv to it, but it's also
- 7:15Speaker 4: an element of storytelling, so that you're getting this connection
- 7:19Speaker 4: between the actor and the audience member.
- 7:22Speaker 5: But it's so cool.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think that's sometimes a lot scarier than the jump scared.
- 7:28Speaker 4: But we want to do it. We want to do
- 7:30Speaker 4: it all, you know, but we do well. We want
- 7:32Speaker 4: to have it be good and have people entertained.
- 7:34Speaker 6: We also.
- 7:36Speaker 4: We want the people who are here volunteering to be
- 7:39Speaker 4: a part of it to feel like they're getting something
- 7:41Speaker 4: out of it. They're growing, they're getting new experiences, they're
- 7:44Speaker 4: having fun. I tell people all the time, if you're
- 7:47Speaker 4: doing something here and you're not having fun. Stop, we
- 7:49Speaker 4: got to talk. Your time is valuable, don't waste it,
- 7:52Speaker 4: don't waste my time. Let's let's find you something that
- 7:55Speaker 4: you're going to enjoy and have fun doing.
- 7:59Speaker 1: That's so awesome, especially for for a volunteer position. It's
- 8:04Speaker 1: like it's not a lot of pressure, but you still
- 8:06Speaker 1: you still want them to have a good time and
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, make it worth their while. And so I
- 8:12Speaker 1: found a review on your website that says, quote great Haunt,
- 8:17Speaker 1: low budget.
- 8:18Speaker 5: But with a lot of heart behind it.
- 8:22Speaker 1: But looking through your Instagram and seeing and seeing some
- 8:26Speaker 1: of the makeup and the set design, like, to me,
- 8:30Speaker 1: it didn't look that low budget, you know what I mean.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It looked like you have some really really talented people
- 8:38Speaker 1: doing makeup, set design and acting as well. What do
- 8:42Speaker 1: you think about the low budget comments.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I think that's a compliment.
- 8:49Speaker 6: I love it.
- 8:50Speaker 3: The Death Star was low budget, you know, but it
- 8:53Speaker 3: was awesome, you know. And then we take a lot
- 8:56Speaker 3: of our especially our sci fi special effects, and that's realm,
- 9:00Speaker 3: you know. The Death Star was just a bunch of
- 9:02Speaker 3: plastic stuff glued onto other plastic stuff and then spray
- 9:05Speaker 3: painted silver, you know, and that's you know, we're lucky
- 9:09Speaker 3: because the Rose Garden, sorry, the Moda Center's trash room
- 9:14Speaker 3: is just a little bit over that way, so we're
- 9:16Speaker 3: able to just go and get a bunch of discarded
- 9:21Speaker 3: things that we can just go And I mean, pilfer, I.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Know a lot of people, especially today, and you know
- 9:30Speaker 4: rightfully so expect haunted houses to be these huge, very
- 9:33Speaker 4: well financed professional productions. And uh, my wife is a
- 9:39Speaker 4: special effects artist in film. I'm a prop maker in
- 9:41Speaker 4: film Feaster Famine. Sometimes we have a bit of money,
- 9:45Speaker 4: sometimes we don't. And every year we do this, we
- 9:48Speaker 4: take a big risk, We take a loan to try
- 9:51Speaker 4: to make it happen. And then when you put an
- 9:54Speaker 4: advertising and you put in the fact that there are
- 9:56Speaker 4: some people here who deserve to be paid just what
- 9:59Speaker 4: they do, what they bring to the table, and the
- 10:01Speaker 4: time that they spend. But yeah, most of our walls
- 10:05Speaker 4: are recycled from TV shows. A lot of our gag
- 10:08Speaker 4: is recycled from you know, stuff that I would go
- 10:11Speaker 4: up to a coordinator on set were like, if you
- 10:14Speaker 4: want to have some money and have less waste, let
- 10:19Speaker 4: me take that for you. So in some ways we
- 10:22Speaker 4: are still kind of like what you would call in
- 10:24Speaker 4: the industry a home haunt where it's not high glass,
- 10:29Speaker 4: high professional. You know, we're not spending two to three
- 10:32Speaker 4: hundred thousand on a whole bunch of animatronics and on
- 10:36Speaker 4: a bunch of boot boxes. Things that can control the
- 10:40Speaker 4: motion and dictate how many times something does something or
- 10:43Speaker 4: repeats itself, or different patterns for how it would interact
- 10:46Speaker 4: on's set off one of our people. He's building that
- 10:51Speaker 4: stuff on his own. Wow, just to make it happen.
- 10:56Speaker 4: And so yeah, when the people like low budget, Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 4: definitely a little budget, but with about three times the heart
- 11:04Speaker 4: that the guys who've got the chet books have.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I feel like you can get a lot more creative
- 11:08Speaker 1: too if you're making something from scratch, and then it
- 11:11Speaker 1: probably looks a lot.
- 11:12Speaker 5: Scarier if it's not super polished.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Well, I think there's a certain level of pride that
- 11:17Speaker 3: goes into it from our volunteers when we've put.
- 11:20Speaker 2: That much effort into something.
- 11:22Speaker 3: You know, you can buy the wall treatments and the
- 11:25Speaker 3: you know, vacui formed things that are all.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Finished and polished and good.
- 11:29Speaker 3: But if you have a team of volunteers that have
- 11:31Speaker 3: actually put in the time to make this their own.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Then you know that really does cement in that this
- 11:38Speaker 3: is this is ours, this is something that I've built,
- 11:42Speaker 3: this is something that I'm proud of. And I think
- 11:45Speaker 3: that really translates into the performances, into the commitments, into the.
- 11:52Speaker 2: General morale, you know.
- 11:55Speaker 6: Yeah, pride of ownership, pride of ownership.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you touched on the Witches fog House. But let's
- 12:01Speaker 1: talk about the other two, correct, the terror Ship and
- 12:05Speaker 1: then under hill manor so can you tell me a
- 12:08Speaker 1: little bit about each of those without any spoilers. We
- 12:11Speaker 1: want people to go and see it for themselves.
- 12:13Speaker 6: So the Terrorship was new last year.
- 12:17Speaker 4: We're getting to the point now where we'll have a
- 12:19Speaker 4: theme for a couple of years. So one of the
- 12:22Speaker 4: houses was the Junkyard, which was fun at the last
- 12:27Speaker 4: year is always the best year. It's kind of the
- 12:29Speaker 4: joke is like the year you're doing it before you
- 12:31Speaker 4: do something.
- 12:32Speaker 6: New is the best year.
- 12:33Speaker 4: So the Junkyard, dead cars with flashing lights, it was amazing.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Every year you want to be better.
- 12:40Speaker 4: And this guy right here for the Tearship, the effort
- 12:43Speaker 4: that Jeff's put into it with how you just using
- 12:48Speaker 4: an engraving machine, what.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Is it called that's a C N C.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Router, so he'll route PLEXI run a strip of LED
- 12:57Speaker 4: across the top of it and makes these lights look
- 12:59Speaker 4: futurist stick and using old computer monitors that we found
- 13:06Speaker 4: worked after a freak duck come out of the dump
- 13:09Speaker 4: at the motor center to you know, make monitors for
- 13:13Speaker 4: the ship.
- 13:14Speaker 6: And just his creativity is the engine room is amazing.
- 13:18Speaker 4: What he's done again you you suggest and rightfully so
- 13:21Speaker 4: not to give stuff away. I'm trying in my excitement
- 13:24Speaker 4: to express the coolness but not give it away.
- 13:28Speaker 6: But the idea is.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Is, yes, it's your your spaceship that's been out too far,
- 13:34Speaker 4: out too long. It's all gross and mucked up, and
- 13:36Speaker 4: then the aliens have gotten into it.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Spooky, that's so cool. What about the Underhill manner?
- 13:45Speaker 4: So Underhill the manner is something that while will never
- 13:50Speaker 4: get rid of the manner, but the themes of the
- 13:52Speaker 4: manner can change from you know, Underhill Hospital to right now,
- 13:58Speaker 4: it's the manor with family pires.
- 14:01Speaker 6: That's the thing.
- 14:02Speaker 1: That's a good mix of stuff. You got the witches,
- 14:04Speaker 1: aliens and vampires. I love it. So where do you
- 14:08Speaker 1: get the inspiration for the houses?
- 14:11Speaker 5: Every year?
- 14:12Speaker 4: It starts out with well, with the idea of you know,
- 14:16Speaker 4: what would be cool to do next? Also, though it
- 14:20Speaker 4: depends on what our resources are, because you know, again
- 14:24Speaker 4: we're a good season is the season we break even
- 14:27Speaker 4: and everything's paid for, you know. And considering that we're
- 14:32Speaker 4: in this space for roughly four months between that and
- 14:36Speaker 4: the advertising and then all the money is that get
- 14:40Speaker 4: paid to all the other organizations here that do things,
- 14:45Speaker 4: it can add up pretty fast. So like the terror ship,
- 14:49Speaker 4: we wanted to do a ship. We had a bunch
- 14:53Speaker 4: of walls that were roughly the same color, and then yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 4: we just went. We went for a We went and
- 15:01Speaker 4: to the good old bins and every cool plastic plastic
- 15:05Speaker 4: key thing we could find, from NERF guns to contraptions whatever.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Because what's crazy, and as Jeff was mentioning, like with
- 15:13Speaker 4: the Death Star and what they used to do in
- 15:14Speaker 4: the seventies in the eighties is you would just take
- 15:17Speaker 4: all this gack and then mount it on something and
- 15:20Speaker 4: then paint it. And when you paint it and then
- 15:23Speaker 4: you give it detail, it changes. It goes from looking
- 15:27Speaker 4: like a bunch of junk screw to a wall to
- 15:31Speaker 4: things that look like they have purpose. You don't know
- 15:32Speaker 4: what it is, but you know that it looks it
- 15:35Speaker 4: tells overall, it tells a tale that this is a
- 15:37Speaker 4: part of a ship.
- 15:38Speaker 6: And then you put black light on it and it
- 15:39Speaker 6: looks cool.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you got to have the black light.
- 15:42Speaker 4: But a lot of the designs of the houses, a
- 15:45Speaker 4: lot of the themes, that comes from my wife, Christina.
- 15:48Speaker 4: She's the one that's been doing this for close to
- 15:50Speaker 4: thirty years. She started out at a Haunt down in
- 15:54Speaker 4: California that was an old two story mall and the
- 15:57Speaker 4: whole thing was the haunted house. So this is this
- 16:01Speaker 4: is She loves doing the mazes and she just gets
- 16:04Speaker 4: these feelings like I think whitches are it?
- 16:06Speaker 1: Well, she's right, something I thought was so cool and unique.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I don't think i'd ever really seen it before. You
- 16:15Speaker 1: have a halloween market in the space as well, a
- 16:19Speaker 1: bizarre Is the market area really scary too or is
- 16:24Speaker 1: it just kind of like.
- 16:25Speaker 5: A normal No, it's it's scary, Okay. No jump scar
- 16:28Speaker 5: is going to come out from behind a booth or something.
- 16:31Speaker 3: We tell our actors that's strictly off limits. That in
- 16:34Speaker 3: the bathroom, No jump scares, no scare zones, no scare zones.
- 16:38Speaker 3: In fact, we have if the houses themselves are too
- 16:41Speaker 3: much for our patrons, we have at the very end
- 16:44Speaker 3: in the or in the halloweens are the Scaredy Cat Lounge,
- 16:48Speaker 3: which is very well lit, very pot pink with the walls,
- 16:53Speaker 3: a very comfy couch. But you just have to sit
- 16:56Speaker 3: in shame somewhere that's like Scaredy Cat Lounge where everyone
- 16:59Speaker 3: can see you as they exit. Yeah, but yeah, it's
- 17:03Speaker 3: a safe space right next to all the merch.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I feel like if I took my co host there,
- 17:08Speaker 1: I would just have to PLoP her down there and
- 17:10Speaker 1: just leave her there the whole time.
- 17:13Speaker 4: If you guys, if you guys wanted to come through,
- 17:14Speaker 4: you should come through and bring her a little early
- 17:18Speaker 4: and we'll put her in makeup and we'll.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Put her somewhere in the house.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, and she can hunt you.
- 17:24Speaker 5: She might be into that. It might be payback.
- 17:29Speaker 6: But with the with the Halloween Bazaar, sometimes just the
- 17:33Speaker 6: cost of booths is outrageous.
- 17:36Speaker 4: What people have to pay just to display there. You
- 17:38Speaker 4: know there was real estate. Yeah, it's crazy expensive. What
- 17:42Speaker 4: we do is we tell people you can put up
- 17:45Speaker 4: your booth and your tent and leave it. And the
- 17:50Speaker 4: cost of that space is ten percent of your sales
- 17:53Speaker 4: as a donation from you to the Canon Shakespeare Company,
- 17:56Speaker 4: so it's deductible for them.
- 17:58Speaker 6: That's the that's the cost. And what we'd like to
- 18:01Speaker 6: do is just focus on.
- 18:05Speaker 4: You know, small privately owned companies, mom and pop companies,
- 18:10Speaker 4: you know, like us artists people like that, and just
- 18:15Speaker 4: it's a it's an opportunity for for artists to be
- 18:20Speaker 4: seen by a lot of people and not lose a
- 18:23Speaker 4: bunch of money doing it.
- 18:25Speaker 1: So yeah, and it's like the perfect time of year,
- 18:28Speaker 1: the perfect area. Like all of those people I'm sure
- 18:31Speaker 1: would be into anything spooky they're selling at the market
- 18:34Speaker 1: if they're coming to a haunted house, right, But if
- 18:36Speaker 1: anyone is interested, So you said, you still have spots,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and I assume there's like a form online you would
- 18:42Speaker 1: fill out if you're interested in being in the market.
- 18:44Speaker 4: The person who's in charge of is the one who
- 18:47Speaker 4: who puts that all together. So there's not a place
- 18:50Speaker 4: to sign up for it that I'm aware of.
- 18:51Speaker 1: We would have to talk to her, okay, but people
- 18:54Speaker 1: could contact you if they were Oh.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, and you're presenting some questions like oh, Okay, well, these.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Things need to change.
- 19:01Speaker 4: That's that's something that's been a part of this process
- 19:03Speaker 4: over the last several years. As we're just like, we
- 19:07Speaker 4: are a very safe space. We have a very strict
- 19:11Speaker 4: no bullying, no threats of violence, no violence, no aggressive
- 19:16Speaker 4: aggression policy.
- 19:19Speaker 6: So it's just and over we've developed that over.
- 19:21Speaker 4: The last several years, and when something happens that we
- 19:25Speaker 4: were ready for it, then the policy gets updated. But
- 19:28Speaker 4: also with things like that too, where it's like, oh,
- 19:31Speaker 4: we should have some place where people if they're interested,
- 19:34Speaker 4: once the word gets out and it becomes more known
- 19:37Speaker 4: in the city that this is and that's what we
- 19:39Speaker 4: want is that this is a place.
- 19:40Speaker 6: For artists to show their stuff. Yeah, to put in
- 19:44Speaker 6: an application for it.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Okay, So I wanted to talk about the Lights Out
- 19:48Speaker 1: special event that is Thursday the twenty fourth, and the
- 19:53Speaker 1: title seems a little self explanatory, but can you tell
- 19:56Speaker 1: us a little bit about what changes with the haunt
- 19:59Speaker 1: and the extra do environment.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Well, yeah, we we hand out sort of small you know,
- 20:06Speaker 3: pin lights, sort of the finger lighty led lights to
- 20:10Speaker 3: each of our participants. Not so much so they can
- 20:13Speaker 3: see their way through in the dark, more so we
- 20:17Speaker 3: can see where they are.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Oh, it's a false sense of security because they have
- 20:21Speaker 6: some light.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It's not that great. Just get you caught right, Yep, yep.
- 20:27Speaker 3: We we do leave on you know, emergency exit lights
- 20:29Speaker 3: because the fire marshal would be angry if we didn't.
- 20:32Speaker 3: But outside of that, yeah, it's more or less just
- 20:34Speaker 3: a blackout event.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Feel your way around in the dark, try to it.
- 20:40Speaker 4: It's intense. It's not for everybody, but every year we will.
- 20:45Speaker 4: You started doing it and we just we've had this
- 20:47Speaker 4: slow build of very committed people that every year, are
- 20:52Speaker 4: you doing it again?
- 20:53Speaker 6: Are you doing it again? Yes, yes we are, and
- 20:56Speaker 6: they love it.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Those creepy people, man, they just want to be so scared,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but you do have so maybe not so scary.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Stuff kids Monsterfest yet.
- 21:08Speaker 1: That is Sunday, the twentieth and twenty seven. Yes, I
- 21:13Speaker 1: just kind of have one question asking for a friend.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Do the adults get to come and do they get
- 21:19Speaker 1: wands as well?
- 21:21Speaker 4: Adults can come and know they don't get ones because
- 21:24Speaker 4: the wands only work for the children. We've had several
- 21:28Speaker 4: complaints over the years when people are they show up
- 21:31Speaker 4: and what they expected was because the tickets are cheaper,
- 21:36Speaker 4: and they expected to be able to go through the
- 21:38Speaker 4: haunted a cheaper price, but still have the late night
- 21:41Speaker 4: scared shenanigans. And they've been very upset because kids Monsterfest.
- 21:47Speaker 4: It's just that it's during the daytime. What we do
- 21:51Speaker 4: is we close down one of three houses, so we
- 21:53Speaker 4: only have two houses open. We close the scariest, goorious
- 21:56Speaker 4: house down. That makes sense, and then kids are given me.
- 22:01Speaker 4: And what the kids are told is that the magic
- 22:03Speaker 4: wands only work for them, so they can't hand it
- 22:05Speaker 4: off to the adults. They're the only ones that can
- 22:08Speaker 4: use it. It will only work for them. And most
- 22:11Speaker 4: monsters are being good little monsters because it's daytime. Daytime
- 22:14Speaker 4: is bedtime for monsters. But there are some naughty monsters
- 22:19Speaker 4: running about and if they see one, point their magic
- 22:23Speaker 4: wand at it and tell it, go to bed, monster,
- 22:26Speaker 4: go to bed. And I always say this after I
- 22:30Speaker 4: tell that, when I tell people what it is and
- 22:32Speaker 4: how it works, Like, you don't know fear until you've
- 22:35Speaker 4: been hunted by seven.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Year olds for four it's a workout.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Yeah, they come after.
- 22:42Speaker 2: You, oh my god.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Yeah, But it's just it's so much fun. It's one
- 22:47Speaker 3: of the more simply the most rewarding of the of
- 22:50Speaker 3: the Haunt days, just because it's just straight fun because yeah,
- 22:56Speaker 3: you get to act just so goofy. We're all dressed,
- 23:00Speaker 3: you know, as very clownish, like bright colors.
- 23:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 23:04Speaker 3: We're just giving all of the power to these ten
- 23:07Speaker 3: and under kids.
- 23:10Speaker 2: And oh my god, they're coming watch out you guys,
- 23:15Speaker 2: and yeah, just running for our lives from toddlers. It's amazing.
- 23:19Speaker 2: A lot of falling over.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Yeah, and they take it to heart real fast.
- 23:25Speaker 4: It's also really interesting because when we started doing we realized, wow,
- 23:29Speaker 4: we're getting some insight into how some of these kids
- 23:35Speaker 4: are parented, because some kids will be like, go to sleep, monster,
- 23:38Speaker 4: and other kids are like monster, I.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Told you go to sleep.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Go to sleep.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Break down and the parents are behind the kid and
- 23:44Speaker 4: they're like, oh, let's see.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Oh it's so sweet though, even though I wouldn't get
- 23:52Speaker 1: a wand.
- 23:52Speaker 4: No, it's it's it's like just say, it's really rewarding,
- 23:57Speaker 4: and we've a lot of parents have really appreciated having
- 24:00Speaker 4: something close in town to do with with their kids.
- 24:03Speaker 4: And we lower the price because we are closing one
- 24:05Speaker 4: of the houses also, we just we have a lower
- 24:07Speaker 4: price because it's for families.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so I imagine that seeing everything be put together
- 24:14Speaker 1: behind the scenes kind of takes some of the mystery
- 24:17Speaker 1: out of the haunted house. But when all is said
- 24:20Speaker 1: and done and the lights go down, do you guys
- 24:24Speaker 1: ever get scared seeing it all come together?
- 24:27Speaker 3: We encourage the actors to try and scare.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Us as much as possible. I mean, especially me.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I mean it's my job as the as the cast
- 24:36Speaker 3: manager to you know, critique performances, make sure they're doing
- 24:39Speaker 3: the right thing. So I try to drill into them.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Please don't drop character, please, you know, keep what you're doing,
- 24:46Speaker 3: show me, show me what you got kind of thing.
- 24:50Speaker 3: And most of the time they're good. And a lot
- 24:53Speaker 3: of the time, yeah I get, I do get scared.
- 24:55Speaker 3: One person in particular that like Iris had started off
- 24:58Speaker 3: you know, behind a slamp pannel tim and is all
- 25:02Speaker 3: get out. Could only you know, shut shut a thing
- 25:05Speaker 3: from behind the wall. This last weekend, I think scared
- 25:08Speaker 3: me three times in the course of like two turns
- 25:12Speaker 3: of a hallway. It's just completely come out of their
- 25:15Speaker 3: shell and got me, you know. So it's definitely more
- 25:19Speaker 3: the more the people like the the scares and the
- 25:22Speaker 3: gags themselves. You know, I know, I know those are coming.
- 25:24Speaker 3: But the things that people do get me all the time.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Or like, you know, if we have a new actor
- 25:31Speaker 3: that I've never met before and they come out of
- 25:34Speaker 3: the the would work to surprise me.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great, cure are you?
- 25:39Speaker 5: Are you supposed to be here?
- 25:40Speaker 2: People crawling on the ground every time? Every time.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Crawling is just so creepy.
- 25:48Speaker 4: But yeah, it's it's you think you're in a space
- 25:50Speaker 4: and there's no one around it, and you look down
- 25:52Speaker 4: and they're right above your feet.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Looking up at you.
- 25:57Speaker 4: There's yeah, when you when you do this, when you're
- 25:59Speaker 4: in the industry, you don't get scared anymore because you
- 26:03Speaker 4: see all of the mechanisms and all of the all
- 26:06Speaker 4: of the things behind it. You can still appreciate when
- 26:09Speaker 4: things are well done though, whether it's a set or
- 26:11Speaker 4: whether it's a performance. But like, yeah, like Jeff said,
- 26:15Speaker 4: we tell our actors all the time, just because you
- 26:18Speaker 4: see us, don't let us pass by, come after us,
- 26:21Speaker 4: Try something new, try something bold, because once in a
- 26:25Speaker 4: while I can still be gone. I can and oh
- 26:30Speaker 4: man like and it's a badge of honor when you
- 26:33Speaker 4: can get someone who's been doing this for years and
- 26:35Speaker 4: years and years, so we encourage them to do that
- 26:37Speaker 4: because it's good for them when they're like, oh my gosh,
- 26:40Speaker 4: I did it, and for us it's like, oh, man,
- 26:43Speaker 4: who has been a while.
- 26:44Speaker 1: When I was snooping through your Instagram, I saw one
- 26:50Speaker 1: of the reels of people their reactions after they were
- 26:53Speaker 1: getting out of the house, and someone said that they
- 26:56Speaker 1: did pee themselves a little, and I was wondering, is
- 27:00Speaker 1: this the common occurrence?
- 27:02Speaker 2: Would you.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Would you suggest people wear some sort of corvency pad
- 27:09Speaker 1: or diaper.
- 27:10Speaker 3: So last weekend, which was our first time ever encountering
- 27:21Speaker 3: something like this, I didn't know this was possible either.
- 27:25Speaker 3: One of our longtime haunters, who was also very instrumental
- 27:30Speaker 3: in building the whole Haunted house, scared someone so bad
- 27:35Speaker 3: that they left his room through an emergency exit, walked
- 27:39Speaker 3: the exterior wall of the exhibit hall and projectile vomited
- 27:45Speaker 3: a really entire wall.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Oh no, which.
- 27:48Speaker 3: We're in the process of building him a trophy.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Because it's just the most amazing thing.
- 27:55Speaker 5: Yeah, So, where diaper and bring a bar.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Just in case of your prone to fits of vomiting
- 28:06Speaker 2: or you know, have.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Iritable Yeah, people ask questions that are someone like that
- 28:13Speaker 4: or that are like that, and it's just know yourself,
- 28:17Speaker 4: know what your limitations are, because we also have people
- 28:22Speaker 4: that are like, can I bring my kid? And I've
- 28:25Speaker 4: had fifteen year old's sixteen year olds make it through
- 28:30Speaker 4: the first room and they're done.
- 28:32Speaker 6: They and they will not go back. I feel bad.
- 28:34Speaker 4: It's like, because you know, no refunds, but yeah, you
- 28:40Speaker 4: guys are missing out on like ninety five percent of they.
- 28:43Speaker 6: Won't go back. Yeah.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Man, We had a girl go through Kids Monsterfest. She
- 28:48Speaker 4: was about eight or seven somewhere in there, and her
- 28:52Speaker 4: parents had a great time, and she was sad. She
- 28:54Speaker 4: came out, she said, and my wife was there and said, well,
- 28:58Speaker 4: did you not have a good time? And her response
- 29:00Speaker 4: was it wasn't scary. So we gave them comp tickets
- 29:05Speaker 4: to come back later that night when all three houses
- 29:08Speaker 4: were open, you know, all of the ruckus and the
- 29:10Speaker 4: blood and the grossness and the screams and the terror.
- 29:14Speaker 4: So they go through third house, they come out, the
- 29:16Speaker 4: parents are just like and she was she almost she
- 29:23Speaker 4: was gonna split, she was. Her eyes were smiling. She
- 29:26Speaker 4: was like, oh it was so oh, it was so scary.
- 29:29Speaker 4: It was so good.
- 29:31Speaker 5: Oh my gosh.
- 29:33Speaker 6: So you got to know yourself. Yeah, you got to
- 29:35Speaker 6: know yourself. You got to know. It's great for us.
- 29:39Speaker 4: I mean, the worst case scenario what happens is is
- 29:41Speaker 4: we have to shut a house down.
- 29:42Speaker 6: This happened outside, so we didn't.
- 29:45Speaker 4: But there's been times where I've had to stop a
- 29:47Speaker 4: line and then backs up to enter and people get upset.
- 29:51Speaker 4: You know, they don't want to that natural. You know,
- 29:53Speaker 4: I'm not upset with that. You're standing around for ten minutes,
- 29:57Speaker 4: fifteen minutes. You want to know why you just waited
- 29:59Speaker 4: to get in. You're standing again? What's going on? And
- 30:01Speaker 4: then the best time that ever happened was is people
- 30:04Speaker 4: started getting vocal about it. And as it started getting
- 30:08Speaker 4: vocal to people, it has batsuits head to toe because
- 30:13Speaker 4: someone had had made a mess, they.
- 30:17Speaker 6: Had lost mowel control.
- 30:19Speaker 4: And they come out pushing the cart but they feel
- 30:21Speaker 4: like the goggles and the thing yellow suits and they're
- 30:24Speaker 4: gloves and they're pushing it. And I watched him go by.
- 30:27Speaker 4: I turned to the guy who was making a noise,
- 30:29Speaker 4: a lot of noise.
- 30:29Speaker 6: He was like, this is stupid. I don't want to
- 30:31Speaker 6: be here. What's going on? Once.
- 30:32Speaker 4: It takes a long and I just tread him ready, sir,
- 30:35Speaker 4: We're ready for you, all nice and clean.
- 30:40Speaker 6: He didn't want to go.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Maybe that's why he was trying to get out of
- 30:46Speaker 1: the line before it actually opened up again, because he
- 30:48Speaker 1: was too scared.
- 30:49Speaker 6: But he was, yeah, this is stupid. Well we have
- 30:51Speaker 6: to wear oh man.
- 30:53Speaker 4: So but yeah, there have been accidents.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I was going to ask, what the weirdest thing you've
- 31:01Speaker 1: ever had to clean up from a haunt was? I
- 31:04Speaker 1: feel like you kind of answered it.
- 31:10Speaker 6: Yeah, we were. It's nice to still be surprised, and
- 31:15Speaker 6: that was a surprise.
- 31:18Speaker 1: I can't imagine the type of things people I don't know,
- 31:21Speaker 1: because I imagine people just like ah and like losing
- 31:24Speaker 1: all of their stuff.
- 31:27Speaker 3: It seems like several times a year we have to
- 31:29Speaker 3: go on a cell phone hunt through the twelve thousand
- 31:32Speaker 3: or so square feet of haunted house and it's you know,
- 31:36Speaker 3: typically kicked under something. We find them fairly quickly, to
- 31:40Speaker 3: our credit.
- 31:40Speaker 4: But yeah, stuff goes flying. We find earrings, necklaces, jewelry, phones.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Be careful, put your stuff on ropes so you don't
- 31:51Speaker 1: lose anything. And to be so scary.
- 31:55Speaker 4: And it's just you know, they'll they'll get through it
- 31:59Speaker 4: three houses before they realized they've lost something, and they've
- 32:03Speaker 4: gone through sprinting at some points because there's just.
- 32:08Speaker 6: Just to get through it.
- 32:10Speaker 1: That shows how like scary and into like the story
- 32:14Speaker 1: and the scenery they are if they are forgetting that
- 32:17Speaker 1: they've lost something.
- 32:19Speaker 4: That's That's what I'm really I'm proud of is our
- 32:22Speaker 4: are Haunt is getting a reputation now for being very
- 32:25Speaker 4: actor centric and focused and being scary because of it,
- 32:29Speaker 4: because we don't really have anything in the way of animatronics,
- 32:35Speaker 4: so it's on our actors.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Yeah, there's another I mean plus about being low budget.
- 32:41Speaker 3: You know, we have to we get to rely on
- 32:44Speaker 3: these actors that are you know, getting better and better
- 32:47Speaker 3: year after year, that are just continuing to surprise me
- 32:53Speaker 3: over and over as as I go on. You know,
- 32:55Speaker 3: we have people now in higher positions of sort of
- 33:00Speaker 3: more authority, that are taking on more sort of directorial
- 33:03Speaker 3: roles that I'm walking into Haunts finding that they've choreographed
- 33:07Speaker 3: these sort of elaborate routines that are just amazing and
- 33:11Speaker 3: brilliant just taking it on themselves.
- 33:13Speaker 4: And so you've got you've got two actors doing a
- 33:16Speaker 4: little sort of vignette that they've worked out together as
- 33:20Speaker 4: people come by.
- 33:21Speaker 6: Yeah, it's great.
- 33:22Speaker 5: That is so fun. Well, now I want to volunteer
- 33:25Speaker 5: do Yeah, I'm coming down. You can't stop me.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, if you would like to volunteer underhillpdx
- 33:33Speaker 3: dot com monsters needed link that will send an email
- 33:37Speaker 3: directly to me and I will reach out via phone
- 33:41Speaker 3: within a couple of days and we'd love to have you.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, probably sometimes I haven't said it time for
- 33:47Speaker 4: it yet, but what I like to do is, if
- 33:49Speaker 4: not two different times, at least one time, have an
- 33:53Speaker 4: actor's workshop, which is part just acting but also acting
- 33:59Speaker 4: for the Haunt. I've been in theater since I was
- 34:02Speaker 4: a kid, and I love it. It's my passion and I
- 34:05Speaker 4: love helping people figure ways to do it and be
- 34:10Speaker 4: involved in it. I'm very much of a you want
- 34:13Speaker 4: to be an actor done, You're an actor. There's no
- 34:16Speaker 4: like secret handshake, there's no like code that you need
- 34:20Speaker 4: to know to be an actor. No one, no one
- 34:23Speaker 4: gate keeps that unless you give them the power too.
- 34:25Speaker 4: So I tell people, if you want to be an actor,
- 34:27Speaker 4: you're an actor. Now you've got to be better the
- 34:29Speaker 4: onus of that is on you, and uh so come
- 34:32Speaker 4: in and volunteer for us and be scary and if
- 34:35Speaker 4: you want, you know, learn some learn some stuff about
- 34:38Speaker 4: acting and have fun.
- 34:41Speaker 5: Yep, you want to go have some spooky fun.
- 34:44Speaker 6: Right, yeah. And it's I've seen.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Some haunted houses where regrettably, unfortunately, I feel like that's forgotten.
- 34:57Speaker 6: You know, it's you can.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Get caught up in all of the uh the technical
- 35:01Speaker 4: side of it and in the presentation.
- 35:04Speaker 6: And it's good to have those things. I mean, you
- 35:06Speaker 6: want those things.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Because it all, it all just adds to the overall
- 35:10Speaker 4: experience and the omvioance of it. But uh, I've seen
- 35:17Speaker 4: actors that are just there to be there. Oh you look,
- 35:22Speaker 4: you see it, you can see it.
- 35:23Speaker 6: The eyes are very important.
- 35:24Speaker 4: I tell people, when you're having fun joy, your eyes
- 35:29Speaker 4: are smiling, they're a light, they're they're telling you that
- 35:32Speaker 4: this is a moment that everyone's involved in. And some
- 35:36Speaker 4: some of the times you go to these places and
- 35:38Speaker 4: actuals just no, no, no, no, that's oh my gosh,
- 35:47Speaker 4: your poor your poor kid. So that's you know, we
- 35:51Speaker 4: really put the emphasis on there, you being present, being
- 35:56Speaker 4: in the moment, having energy, enjoying the experience and not
- 36:01Speaker 4: being afraid of failure. Don't be afraid to get it
- 36:04Speaker 4: wrong as an actor. What's really cool about being in
- 36:07Speaker 4: an a haunted house. You get a fresh audience every minute.
- 36:13Speaker 5: That is true.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Didn't work, Try something else, did it work? Okay, Try
- 36:17Speaker 4: a variance, try to up the anti, try to play
- 36:19Speaker 4: it differently. And as we say, if you can't scare them,
- 36:26Speaker 4: make them laugh, can't make them laugh, gross them out,
- 36:31Speaker 4: can't gross them out, make it awkward.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I feel like that's what I would be good at,
- 36:37Speaker 1: is making things awkward.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Oh I love making things awkward. That's like a lot
- 36:42Speaker 4: of my interaction with people is to just be that personally. Hey,
- 36:50Speaker 4: do you just hate it when people like don't pick
- 36:53Speaker 4: up on social cues And then I'll go away and.
- 36:58Speaker 6: Keep talking to you like you have to conversation.
- 37:00Speaker 2: But that was talking.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Yeah, they left random like, oh man, that's just the worst.
- 37:10Speaker 6: I love awkwy me too.
- 37:13Speaker 5: That was great.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Just some examples of what you could be doing in
- 37:17Speaker 1: the Haunted House if you were a volunteer. Well, thank
- 37:20Speaker 1: you guys so much again for coming on with me.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I really wanted to find something local, something that was
- 37:28Speaker 1: for a good cause. So hopefully everyone goes and checks
- 37:32Speaker 1: out Underhill Haunted House and gets super scared and has
- 37:36Speaker 1: so much fun.
- 37:38Speaker 6: Well, thank you for having us.
- 37:39Speaker 4: It's this has been fun to just sit down and
- 37:43Speaker 4: talk about what we do here.
- 37:46Speaker 1: So you have tickets on the website, right, that's where
- 37:49Speaker 1: you get your tickets, and you do say to pre
- 37:52Speaker 1: purchase tickets because you pick like a time slot, correct.
- 37:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's so that people don't end up waiting
- 37:58Speaker 4: three hours to get in, especially towards the end of
- 38:02Speaker 4: the season when more and more people start coming. It
- 38:04Speaker 4: really can back things up. Also, something very important if
- 38:10Speaker 4: you can take the max here or carpool or taken
- 38:14Speaker 4: an uber or what have you do, because this is
- 38:20Speaker 4: a very happening place. So often there's several events going
- 38:23Speaker 4: at once, and the parking is not cheap. Parking starts
- 38:28Speaker 4: around twenty eight dollars.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yikes, and it goes today.
- 38:34Speaker 6: Yeah, it goes up from there.
- 38:36Speaker 5: Wow. Okay, that was a good tip.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Then, because sometimes you know, people see that and then
- 38:41Speaker 4: we get hate mail, get that one star review. I
- 38:45Speaker 4: don't know why I paid this, and then I had
- 38:47Speaker 4: to pay the service fees and then they maybe pay
- 38:49Speaker 4: forty dollars to.
- 38:50Speaker 6: Park my car and we're like, sorry, we didn't do that.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Have you been downtown before? It's kind of how it goes.
- 39:00Speaker 2: But yeah, every max line stops within a.
- 39:02Speaker 5: Block, so oh perfect, perfect.
- 39:04Speaker 4: So I mean or just you know, park, park up
- 39:06Speaker 4: by the Lloyd Center and stretch your legs for a bit,
- 39:11Speaker 4: walk a few blocks. Save the money and the aggravation.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Oh my goodness. Yeah, and it takes forty five minutes
- 39:18Speaker 4: to an hour to park, and then and then another
- 39:21Speaker 4: hour to.
- 39:24Speaker 6: It gets it gets messy.
- 39:25Speaker 5: So yeah, don't do that, guys.
- 39:29Speaker 6: We always suggest to people to try to find other means.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Thank you alrighty, well, you guys have so much fun
- 39:36Speaker 1: with the rest of your haunting season, and I hope
- 39:39Speaker 1: so many people come and you run out of tickets.
- 39:42Speaker 6: Wow, thank you very much.
- 39:46Speaker 5: Thank you guys, absolutely, thank you.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Fue I definitely would I want to come see the
- 39:57Speaker 1: witches Bog.
- 39:58Speaker 5: That sounds amazing.
- 39:59Speaker 1: I cannot drag my co host out there because she
- 40:02Speaker 1: doesn't do I'm already taking to her to a cemetery
- 40:05Speaker 1: and she's not into that, so I can't.
- 40:07Speaker 5: I can't get her to go to a haunted house.
- 40:09Speaker 6: But well, she should she should volunteer as an actor.
- 40:12Speaker 4: There's a there's an old, cliched joke about the people
- 40:16Speaker 4: who can't go to the haunted house because it's too terrifying.
- 40:19Speaker 6: Make the best actors.
- 40:22Speaker 5: That might make a lot of sense.
- 40:23Speaker 6: They really do.
- 40:24Speaker 5: She terrifies me all the time, so
