- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike Chrispino, joined by Dan
- 0:04Hurley. A little bit later on in the show, Willow Alex Caravan as
- 0:08the Huskies continue to roll, having won twelve in a row now and a
- 0:12record of I'm losing track, It's going crazier twenty two and two. Won
- 0:17twenty two of twenty four. Big numbers for Yukon. Fifty three of their
- 0:23last sixty three have been wins, seventy six and twenty over the last three
- 0:27years. And Dan, you had a couple of games here we're going to
- 0:31talk about. Obviously, we're gonna look ahead a little to De Paul and
- 0:34Marquette, which is coming up over the weekend. But let's go back to
- 0:38Butler at home. That was a major challenge because you played a team that
- 0:42was red hot. They had won four in a row, coming in trying
- 0:45to build their resume. That's what February is about for so many schools.
- 0:50The approach to that game, knowing it it was at home, but knowing
- 0:53you had a team they had beaten once, but you knew they were in
- 0:58kind of desperation mode. Yeah, I mean, they're the first of all,
- 1:02they're really they're a good basketball team, and they're a dangerous team because
- 1:07they're a very good offensive team. Davis Telfort Brooks a really talented offensive team
- 1:15that had two of the best maybe road winds in the country of any program
- 1:21in college this year, having won at Creighton, having won at Marquette.
- 1:25Yeah, so we were prepared for, you know, their best shot,
- 1:29and you know, I think we made the game a little harder on ourselves.
- 1:34Felt like the game was at six eight twelve. Was kind of expecting
- 1:38maybe a raise our level and get a push and maybe getting into the fifteen
- 1:45sixteen eighteen range. But you know, credit Butler. They were stubborn,
- 1:49they were desperate. Then they made us earn it. Yeah, some of
- 1:53the big numbers in that game in the paint Yukon thirty eight twenty eight.
- 1:57Always like that they rebounded it well, the Bulldogs they were even with you
- 2:01thirty three apiece. You know, this is the beauty of this team to
- 2:06me is that every night it's somebody else who's going to step up, who
- 2:09is going to be, you know, one of the key contributors. And
- 2:13in that game, you got Donovan Klingon going off with eighteen points, fourteen
- 2:17rebounds, three block shots and and under twenty eight minutes. Let's talk about
- 2:22him for a second. He looked to me to be much more aggressive offensively
- 2:27in terms of working his way into places to shoot the basketball. Our responsibility
- 2:31offensively as a as a team, and you know, as an organization is
- 2:36to you know, get a sense of you know, what the what the
- 2:40opponent's trying to take away. And obviously they put a lot of stock and
- 2:46you know what some other guys have been doing, and you know, we
- 2:50kind of hadn't featured you know, Donovan, you know, with the post
- 2:53catches, but we felt like, you know, he had a major advantage
- 2:55there and and yeah, that's kind of what the game presented. I think
- 3:00that's what that's what's great about our team is especially the you know, the
- 3:06starting group is. Yeah, you've got five guys that you know, are
- 3:12willing to let someone else, you know, have the numbers and have the
- 3:16game on any given night. And I think that's what makes the team dangerous,
- 3:23that we're not reliant on one or two guys to bail us out on
- 3:27a nightly basis. Yeah, I'm looking at the league stats like a lot
- 3:30of people check these things out, and we don't have a guy in the
- 3:35top ten scoring. We got Spencer fifteen and a half a game, Newton
- 3:39over fifteen. You got Caravent almost fifteen. And that again presented itself in
- 3:45the Butler game because Cam Spencer went off. He made four threes, scored
- 3:50twenty points, had four rebounds, three assists. You just don't know where
- 3:53it's coming from when you play Yukon right now. Yeah, yeah, And
- 4:00you know the defense has improved. I think I've been a little disappointed in
- 4:02the rebounding since Saint John's uh so we we We've gotta got to kind of
- 4:09shore things up there. But I think that's how you It's how you go
- 4:12on winning streaks. That's how you that's how you win tournaments. That's how
- 4:15you advance in tournaments. You know, the easiest way to advance, the
- 4:20easiest way to lose in a tournament is to be reliant, overly reliant on
- 4:26one or two players. One or two of those players have a bad night,
- 4:30and you know it's all over for you. So having depth and obviously
- 4:34having defense and rebounding, you know, in an offense that relies on movement
- 4:42ball movement player movement, as you know, and people that are willing,
- 4:46you know, willing to share you know what, it's Steve Lavender's just say
- 4:50share the sugar, you know, you know, just share the ball,
- 4:55share the credit. It's good. Yeah, let's get back to defense for
- 5:00because I know that's important to you and the coaching staff. Six straight games
- 5:03have held the opposition under sixty five. That's a pretty good number on this
- 5:08level of college basketball. Eh, straight if held teams under seventy. I
- 5:13mean, do you feel like if you're playing the kind of defense you're capable
- 5:15of, you can play with anybody. I'm not getting ahead of us at
- 5:20all, getting ahead of ourselves, but if you're keeping teams between sixty five
- 5:25and seventy, you got to feel like you got a good chance to win
- 5:27every night. Yeah, I think you know, our field goal defense on
- 5:31the year, even when we were not where we wanted to be defensively,
- 5:36our field goal defense has been good throughout the year. And now it's you
- 5:41know, it's a it's at its best. But yeah, earlier in the
- 5:45year we were playing good defense, but we weren't rebounding. We were playing
- 5:47pretty good field goal percentage defense. But we weren't creating turnovers, you know,
- 5:51So there's other aspects to defense than just like you know, making the
- 5:57other guy miss or fouling, you know, which has been an issue for
- 6:00us at times. So I think right now we're showing better discipline, not
- 6:04Valley, you know, we're creating things, you know, more, you
- 6:09know, in terms of turnovers, creating some and get some easy baskets.
- 6:13And then you know we've shown an improvement on the backboard. And then obviously
- 6:16with Donovan back, you know that that that changes are are are are are
- 6:20our defense at the rim? Yeah, I thought that model. The Butler
- 6:25coach brought up something interesting in the post game which which I hadn't thought about,
- 6:29and you could maybe speak to this as a guy that played in this
- 6:31on this level in the Big East against you know, great players. He
- 6:35said, the one reasons they shot thirty seven percent is because of your length
- 6:41on the perimeter. And and you know, I don't really I didn't think
- 6:44about that, but Tristan Newton's not a small guard. Steph Castle is not
- 6:46a small guard cam spencer. I mean that's pretty important, isn't it to
- 6:51have that kind of length on the perimeter. Yeah. And you know then
- 6:56Alyx is six' eight and he's got low arms, and uh you saw
- 7:00one through four who end up, you know, switching a lot of things
- 7:02that're they're tall and and uh you know, they could cover a lot of
- 7:06court and you know they could bother shots. I don't think we looked at
- 7:12the game after watching a Butler game and said, uh man, we got
- 7:16lucky. You know, they missed some good ones. I think, uh
- 7:19it felt like we uh you know, we contested, uh, you know
- 7:23everything against a really good offense. Well you've got you got to go and
- 7:30that's for sure. And and uh I brought this up to one of the
- 7:33one of the guys. You know, I don't hope you don't get mad
- 7:35at me, But superstition, I get a little superstitious things are going well,
- 7:41you've cons winning a lot of games. They look good. Do you
- 7:45ever get superstitious at all coming into a game? I mean I got the
- 7:49underwear. I got lucky underwear and a frame from last year over my shop.
- 7:57Yeah, I mean I add them as we go. You know,
- 8:03it's I got some it's multiplying for me right now, and I don't know
- 8:07if it's healthy it's actually starting to get a little bit scary. So I
- 8:15was talking to Luke Murray before the game, and Eve, if I'm getting
- 8:18a little superstitious, I'm wearing this Yukon blue T shirt under my dress shirt.
- 8:22Now, I don't know, I think I'm going down a rabbit hole
- 8:24here. Yeah. Well, I started this year off like because you know,
- 8:28I like to run, especially day of game. I like to run.
- 8:31And I was a runner as a child. My dad, you know,
- 8:33made me and my brother run, run cross country and run distance for
- 8:37the mental toughness aspect of it and in the fitness. But uh, cardio,
- 8:43but I So I started out the year. You know, I'm gonna
- 8:46run everything. You know, it's got to be sub you know, sub
- 8:48twenty seven minutes. Uh, you know, in terms of the running.
- 8:54So I started out the year going into game one three point oh one miles,
- 8:58right. So now after you know, every next win that we're going
- 9:03for, it's gotta stay sub twenty seven minutes. And now as the winds
- 9:07go, it just gets a little bit tougher. So now like you know,
- 9:11going morning of last game, you know, three point two to two
- 9:15miles in sub twenty seven minutes, it's moving for an old guy. You
- 9:20know, we keep winning like this, I'm gonna I'm gonna probably drop that
- 9:26on the treadmill. No, no, no, no, don't stay.
- 9:28I'm in march because I'm gonna be trying to book like a three point three
- 9:31two sub twenty seven minute mile because I've got the superstition in my head.
- 9:39Oh there you go. Hey, nine minute miles are great, I mean,
- 9:43but don't don't go. It's not a nine minute mile now though,
- 9:46Mike, because it's I'm trying. I just ran a three point two to
- 9:50two, so yeah, so it's more like an eight and a half minute,
- 9:54right. Even the winds go up, and you know, as you
- 9:58keep winning, it just gets it gets tough. At some point I'm gonna
- 10:00be at like an a ten pace hopefully. Oh no, Roger Banister,
- 10:05I'm not Roger Banister, but you know, look out Roger Banister. All
- 10:09right, coach, we'll be back in just a second. It's the Yukon
