- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:05from social media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19I had the worst sleep ever. Pumpkin was up and down all
- 0:22night. For anyone that doesn't know,
- 0:23Pumpkin is my dog. So anyways, I am here, I am
- 0:27ready to deliver you guys the three biggest stories of today
- 0:31on the Internet. But I am sorry if it is a little
- 0:33bit late. All right, the first one that I
- 0:36have for you guys, this is like for the marketing girlies.
- 0:40I feel like every once in a while I cover something that is
- 0:42marketing brand related and it pops off like you guys actually
- 0:46love this kind of content. So I'm gonna try and do a little
- 0:49bit more of it. So the first story is a
- 0:52Stagecoach after party is going viral for all the wrong reasons.
- 0:58So the Revolve X Pizza Slime Stagecoach after party has gone
- 1:02viral after TikTok creator Regan Corsi posted about why she
- 1:06decided to leave the event early.
- 1:08For those unfamiliar with Stagecoach, it's a country music
- 1:11festival the weekend after Coachella and it is also held in
- 1:15India which is the same site as Coachella.
- 1:18So Regan shared a TikTok showcasing 2 signs positioned at
- 1:22the entrance of the party. One red over 1,000,000 followers
- 1:26enter here and the other red under 1,000,000 followers enter
- 1:29here. Despite 2 separate lines, both
- 1:33seemingly led to the same party, so Regan sent her video quote.
- 1:37I am leaving the after party because of the sign.
- 1:40That's so weird to me. I get exclusivity and shit but
- 1:43like we're not celebs, we are just normal ass people.
- 1:45I don't know, that was really weird to me.
- 1:47For context, Regan actually has over 1,000,000 followers on
- 1:50TikTok, so she would have been in the exclusive line, and this
- 1:54particular video that she posted has over 21 million views at the
- 1:58time of recording. Shortly after Regan's TikTok was
- 2:01posted, numerous users flooded her comment section with
- 2:04questions asking whether the signs were legitimate and the
- 2:08logistics of the party. Understandably, many were upset
- 2:11that a brand would choose to separate attendees based on
- 2:15follower count. While some were criticizing
- 2:18Revolve and Pizza Slime, given they were the sponsors of the
- 2:21party, others suggested that the signs might be intended as a
- 2:24joke, citing Pizza Slime's brand identity and mission.
- 2:28Pizza Slime is a Los Angeles based where brand that tends to
- 2:31poke fun at celebrities and influencer culture.
- 2:34Their clothing has frequently gone viral in the past.
- 2:36Tana Mojo stitched Regan's TikTok video making this point
- 2:40saying quote is everyone not aware of Pizza Slime's lore?
- 2:43If you know Pizza Slime, you know this is just a joke and
- 2:46almost making fun of the fact that influencer culture and
- 2:48Coachella are really like that. So while a lot of people that
- 2:51initially criticized the two separate lines were maybe not
- 2:55aware of Pizza Slime and its mission, their immediate
- 2:59reactions were somewhat valid. Especially because Revolve has
- 3:03been a brand that feeds into influencer culture and has also
- 3:06been quite exclusionary in the process, especially around the
- 3:10activations that they do at festivals.
- 3:12For instance, in 2022, Revolve faced backlash during Coachella
- 3:16for their Revolve Fest, where the brand was accused of
- 3:19favoring influencers with more followers and facing other
- 3:22criticisms about the event's safety.
- 3:24With that being said, a partnership between Pizza Slime
- 3:26and Revolve was extremely unexpected.
- 3:29As Tana said in her TikTok quote revolves brand is almost what
- 3:33Pizza Slime is making fun of there.
- 3:35So this situation also highlights the impact of a viral
- 3:38video and an influencer's negative experience.
- 3:41Revolve and Pizza Slime had organized after parties for both
- 3:44Coachella and Stagecoach. However, Regan's video is what
- 3:47brought the party to attention for the masses.
- 3:50And given the general consumer sentiment around Revolve and
- 3:54just these big influencer events in general, when you think about
- 3:56brand trips, you think about activations at Coachella and
- 3:59these big festivals, There's a lot of discourse constantly
- 4:03online about influencer culture and how brands cater to
- 4:07influencers and make, you know, regular people, quote UN quote,
- 4:10feel like nobody's. So while this probably was
- 4:14feeding into, like, the satire of that, I think pizza Slime
- 4:18doing this with Revolve is either the best marketing
- 4:21strategy ever because they're basically saying we're
- 4:24partnering with the biggest culprit of this influencer
- 4:26culture, the ones who played a huge hand in starting this
- 4:29culture, and we're going to throw it back in their face.
- 4:33Or it was a really misguided move because it was kind of a
- 4:36genuine collab and not like a satirical thing, and they could
- 4:40have never guessed that this would have blown up in their
- 4:43faces like this on TikTok. What do you think?
- 4:46All right, the next story that I have for you guys is that Tana
- 4:49Mojo and Brooke Schofield have addressed rumors about Lila
- 4:52Gibney. So four months Internet users
- 4:55have been speculating over what happened between Tana and Lila.
- 4:59For context, Lila used to be associated with Tana's group of
- 5:02friends, where she would frequently appear in their vlogs
- 5:05and content. But recently there have been a
- 5:07couple of signs that the two fell out.
- 5:10For instance, when Tana appeared on 6 Feet Above, she spoke about
- 5:13how she was distancing herself from a friend.
- 5:16Tana explained that she had sent a screenshot of her ex's story
- 5:19to a group chat, where one of the members sent Tana's message
- 5:22to the ex in question. Many listeners assumed Lila was
- 5:26the person who sent the message. Speculation heightened when Lila
- 5:30began posting tiktoks that seemed to indirectly reference
- 5:33Tana. While many Tiktok users were
- 5:35upset with Lila's behavior toward Tana, she has faced
- 5:38controversy in the past. There have been Tiktok
- 5:41circulating alleging that different people were scammed by
- 5:44Lila. They claim she promised to do
- 5:46promotional stories for them after receiving payment, but
- 5:49failed to follow through. People have also found fault
- 5:52with the fact that she promotes being a sugar baby.
- 5:54Since rumors started circulating about a rift between Tana and
- 5:57Lila, there have been reports that both Tana and Brooke
- 6:01unfollowed Lila. While what went down between
- 6:03Lila and the group is still unclear, Tana and Brooke briefly
- 6:06addressed the rumors on the cancelled podcast.
- 6:08Brooke explained that she sent Tana a TikTok of a Reddit
- 6:11theory, breaking down what they believed to have happened with
- 6:13Lila before saying quote it has been taken so far.
- 6:17For example, Reddit users have alleged that Lila took $20,000
- 6:21from Tana to assist in getting out of jail but failed to return
- 6:25it, a claim that both Brooke and Tana have denied.
- 6:28So this claim actually came from an incident where Lila smoked on
- 6:31a plane to Hawaii and then subsequently got in trouble for
- 6:34it. During the conversation, Tana
- 6:36said quote, it's been blown so out of proportion, but I feel
- 6:38bad. I don't want it to go down like
- 6:40that. Tana then explained that there
- 6:42was no beef between the two of them, but that she is just in a
- 6:45different and quote UN quote wholesome stage of her life
- 6:48Quote. I appreciate all of the memories
- 6:50that we had with Lila, and I do think she is like the funniest
- 6:53person alive. I'd wish nothing but the best
- 6:55for her. It's not like this big drama or
- 6:57beef thing. I think I'm just in this place
- 6:59where I'm really refining everything.
- 7:01There have been literally rumors for months about what's going on
- 7:04there, so hopefully that kind of closes the door for that.
- 7:07And the last story that I have for you guys is a quick but kind
- 7:10of like a little wholesome 1. So reposts of Hassan Piker's
- 7:15content on Twitch helped pay for a fan to go to college.
- 7:19So Twitch streamer Hassan Piker recently learned that his
- 7:22content helped a fan pay for their college tuition.
- 7:25The fan operates a Twitch account named Hassan Abbey under
- 7:28score Waiting Room where they replay the streamers content
- 7:31whenever Hassan is not live. They were also able to monetize
- 7:35this content because the streamer does not copyright his
- 7:38content. In a clip of Hassan's
- 7:40conversation with the fan, the streamer called the students
- 7:42efforts amazing and he was very happy that he could help pay off
- 7:46his tuition. He later retweeted a clip from
- 7:49the interaction writing Fuck Copyright.
- 7:52And this is really unique because we're in this era where
- 7:55#1 reaction videos frequently draw criticism for like
- 7:59recycling content or not being considered legitimate content.
- 8:03And two, there is a big problem with original creators not being
- 8:08given credit and quite often not being able to monetize off of
- 8:13different trends they created online or whatever it might be.
- 8:15So this is a very unique situation where a huge streamer
- 8:21has essentially made it so that his fans can repost his content,
- 8:25react to his content, all of that, without the fear of
- 8:27copyright strikes. And therefore they can make
- 8:30money as his fans of being a fan of him off the back of posting
- 8:35his content or using his content, reacting to his
- 8:37content, whatever it might be. It's such a symbiotic
- 8:39relationship and it feels very ethical.
- 8:42And I know that's kind of Hassan's whole thing, is that he
- 8:44really wants to be like an ethical creator.
- 8:47He wants to make his money in an ethical way.
- 8:49And I think this is a really interesting and great example of
- 8:53that. Because for us, as fans of
- 8:55influencers or creators, it can feel like you're very often
- 8:59supporting these people with your time, your energy and your
- 9:02money, but you're not getting a lot in return sometimes, you
- 9:05know, depending on I guess how much content they're putting out
- 9:07or, you know, how close you get to that kind of parasocial
- 9:11relationship with them. But for the most part, it is not
- 9:15a mutual relationship. And this kind of is, you know,
- 9:19he's making his money off of people watching him and being
- 9:22his fan. And so his mindset is kind of
- 9:24the least I can do is make sure that if anybody wants to try and
- 9:27make money from being my fan, they can.
- 9:30All right, guys, that's it for today's mini Scroll.
