- 0:02Speaker 1: Happy Friday, Frasier Friday. Hey, it came out like a
- 0:06Speaker 1: day and a half ago. I forgot to mention it yesterday.
- 0:09Speaker 1: What did you guys think of the Clippers ditching the
- 0:12Speaker 1: salary cap with Kawhi Leonard?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yeah, what happened there?
- 0:19Speaker 3: I'm still trying to figure out exactly the details of
- 0:23Speaker 3: all the things.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Oh, I know all the details. What do you need
- 0:25Speaker 1: to know?
- 0:26Speaker 2: All of it. I haven't really been in tune with it,
- 0:29Speaker 2: if you want the truth.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Okay, so the Clippers, after an investigation, were punished $ 30 million,
- 0:35Speaker 1: five future first-round picks, and their owner, Steve Ballmer, was
- 0:39Speaker 1: suspended for a year. Kawhi Leonard basically gets nothing, right?
- 0:43Speaker 1: He just gets to live his life, and he made
- 0:45Speaker 1: a lot of extra money. So, Codfather, what they did
- 0:48Speaker 1: was they signed him, or other companies signed him to
- 0:54Speaker 1: marketing deals. And... It sounded like people in Kawhi's camp
- 0:58Speaker 1: were asking for that, right? Like, hey, if you want him,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you got to give him even more than what the
- 1:02Speaker 1: maximum is. So figure that out. In my mind too, Kratz,
- 1:07Speaker 1: this was done so sloppily, right? Like he really wasn't
- 1:11Speaker 1: even doing anything deliverables wise to earn the endorsements. I
- 1:15Speaker 1: wonder how many endorsement deals are actually buttoned up and
- 1:19Speaker 1: tied to teams hiding things. I bet you there are,
- 1:23Speaker 1: if the over under is set at two and a half,
- 1:25Speaker 1: I bet you were way, well, Honestly, if the over-under
- 1:27Speaker 1: was set at five and a half, I bet you
- 1:29Speaker 1: were over that number for teams that have brands helping
- 1:34Speaker 1: them out to pay a little extra sauce to players
- 1:38Speaker 1: that they want.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Nope.
- 1:40Speaker 4: There is no way that's going on. Salary cap is
- 1:43Speaker 4: the answer to everything above board and everything that creates
- 1:48Speaker 4: parity in all leagues. Come on, Scott.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Hey, This is actually legal as far as I know it.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Good joke. This is as this is legal as far
- 1:59Speaker 1: as I know it. Okay. If a player signs a
- 2:03Speaker 1: marketing deal for a ton of money and does what
- 2:05Speaker 1: he's supposed to do, then that's okay. Period. Right. Makes sense.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It makes total sense. People sign marketing deals to do things.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Sometimes you might look and be like, man, they're only
- 2:17Speaker 1: doing a commercial shoot and a social media post or
- 2:20Speaker 1: an appearance and they're getting X million dollars. It's a marketplace.
- 2:25Speaker 1: It's not like the salary cap is not set for
- 2:28Speaker 1: influencer marketing deals, appearances, marketing contracts, endorsement deals. There's no
- 2:33Speaker 1: salary cap for that, right? So you might look and say,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I can't believe company X is paying this NBA player
- 2:38Speaker 1: to do that. Well, technically it's by the books. As
- 2:41Speaker 1: long as you do something, Kawhi wasn't even doing anything.
- 2:43Speaker 1: They were just basically funneling money to him and they
- 2:45Speaker 1: had enough proof that it was going on that way. Again,
- 2:49Speaker 1: my point is. You could do this a lot more
- 2:52Speaker 1: cleanly and get away from it, and there's not much
- 2:55Speaker 1: you can.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Do about it.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So fast forward. Let's say we have a salary cap
- 2:58Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball. What's to stop certain teams from
- 3:01Speaker 1: making sure that their players get really nice endorsement deals
- 3:04Speaker 1: from brands that they work with? And I'm talking millions, right?
- 3:07Speaker 1: All of a sudden you look and it's like, oh,
- 3:08Speaker 1: this player used to make 200K in endorsement deals. Now
- 3:11Speaker 1: he's making 20 mil a year.
- 3:14Speaker 4: And so those teams are still able to circumvent it.
- 3:17Speaker 4: It was one of the things that they talked about when...
- 3:20Speaker 4: when Portland was possibly going to get a major league
- 3:24Speaker 4: baseball team, how Nike could come in and be a
- 3:29Speaker 4: major piece to drawing players in. Not, I'm not talking
- 3:34Speaker 4: about like college stuff where it's like, Ooh, you get
- 3:36Speaker 4: some cool Nike gear. It's about those off field things
- 3:40Speaker 4: that if major league baseball goes to a salary cap,
- 3:43Speaker 4: they're able to circumvent those rules. Like it's gonna, it happens.
- 3:50Speaker 4: and it would happen tallying back to baseball, it would happen.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I knew about the Clipper thing. I didn't want to
- 4:03Speaker 2: sound like I knew what he was talking.
- 4:04Speaker 3: About and then just sound totally like, what is he
- 4:07Speaker 3: talking about? The little intricate details for me are what
- 4:12Speaker 3: I needed to hear from you. I knew Kawhi Leonard
- 4:15Speaker 3: was involved in it, but Yeah. I didn't know there
- 4:18Speaker 3: were those such rules like that kind of stuff, but okay.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Now, now that's, that's trouble.
- 4:25Speaker 3: So, but I mean, you can still make side money,
- 4:28Speaker 3: you know, with deals, but they can't be paying your
- 4:31Speaker 3: salary is what you're saying.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Correct.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 1: That's, I mean, they can, that's the thing. There's gray line.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It's just that they went so far past the gray
- 4:39Speaker 1: line that it became too ridiculous.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:43Speaker 1: They were essentially just paying him and he wasn't doing anything,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know?
- 4:48Speaker 4: All I think of when people say Kawhi Leonard, I
- 4:50Speaker 4: know it's off the topic, is that laugh. Yeah, that
- 4:55Speaker 4: laugh gets me every time, but it's a big penalty.
- 4:59Speaker 4: And based on the clothes I'm wearing today, I feel
- 5:02Speaker 4: like I have to say, as I'm looking at myself
- 5:04Speaker 4: on the screen, I have to say, like, we're hunting wabbits.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I feel like I'm going hunting right now, but I
- 5:10Speaker 4: got my yord on.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, the last penalty like that was for the Astros, right?
- 5:16Speaker 1: With the sign stealing scandal, you know, which, which was
- 5:19Speaker 1: some picks and I think it was five mil. So
- 5:22Speaker 1: there's a little more money, but yeah. $ 30 million for
- 5:28Speaker 1: a billionaire is called a drink at a bar.
- 5:34Speaker 2: He good.
- 5:35Speaker 5: All right.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Let's talk ball. This is such a good all smiles
- 5:47Speaker 1: presented by Lorraine co Adley Rutschman. Are you kidding me?
- 5:51Speaker 1: First of all, the ovation was so, so well done
- 5:55Speaker 1: in Baltimore Todd father. And then he hits the home run,
- 5:58Speaker 1: hits another one in his third AB. Here's the first
- 6:00Speaker 1: one we're looking at on the hanging curve ball from young, young,
- 6:03Speaker 1: tried to go up and in on him to a
- 6:05Speaker 1: B's later. And he got him again. Can you ask
- 6:08Speaker 1: for a better return to a place that you loved?
- 6:11Speaker 1: If you're Adley Rutschman, two dingers, the standing O was,
- 6:14Speaker 1: before the first AB and then they were still cheering
- 6:16Speaker 1: for him after the first home run.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Listen I knew he was good there with the Royals
- 6:23Speaker 3: I didn't know how much he was loved though uh
- 6:26Speaker 3: this is incredible I mean listen you come back to
- 6:28Speaker 3: your home city where you first played and the you
- 6:32Speaker 3: know the excitement I remember when he got called up
- 6:34Speaker 3: like this is the dude coming up and you know
- 6:37Speaker 3: he was good he plays the game the right way
- 6:40Speaker 3: you know switch it and catcher um I didn't know
- 6:44Speaker 3: the fans loved him that much, man. And I think, honestly,
- 6:47Speaker 3: this is, it was truly incredible, man. This was, this
- 6:52Speaker 3: was really, really fun for him. And if I'm him,
- 6:55Speaker 3: I'm remembering this night forever. And if, you know, now,
- 6:58Speaker 3: you know, anytime he goes to Baltimore or anything with Baltimore, he's,
- 7:02Speaker 3: he's got a soft, soft heart for that. And he's
- 7:05Speaker 3: going to make sure he does what he does best
- 7:06Speaker 3: and help out as many people as he can there.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I think he was the face of this next, Or
- 7:13Speaker 4: the final part of the rebuild. They were rebuilding and
- 7:17Speaker 4: they wanted to say, okay, this is the group that's
- 7:20Speaker 4: going to get us here. This is our 1-1. And
- 7:23Speaker 4: I don't think he's done anything bad in Baltimore. If
- 7:26Speaker 4: you have a 1-1 and he goes three-time All-Star, I
- 7:29Speaker 4: think people thought maybe he was an MVP. But I
- 7:34Speaker 4: felt like his tenure in Baltimore should be remembered with
- 7:38Speaker 4: a standing O like that.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yep, agreed.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Right, you're a three-time All-Star. Also, keep in mind, when
- 7:43Speaker 1: you sign a first-round pick, a first overall pick, you're
- 7:47Speaker 1: expecting him to be there, hopefully, for life, if he's
- 7:51Speaker 1: a superstar.
- 7:52Speaker 2: For a while, yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 1: We might just be scratching the surface, right? Sometimes we
- 7:57Speaker 1: want to judge every player right off the jump. It
- 7:59Speaker 1: takes time, whether it's development, injuries. Adley Rutschman can still
- 8:03Speaker 1: be a star player in this league for a long
- 8:05Speaker 1: period of time. He's young. I mean, technically... the way
- 8:08Speaker 1: we used to look at prime years, he hasn't even
- 8:10Speaker 1: gotten there yet. So in terms of what he did
- 8:13Speaker 1: at the start of his career with Baltimore, there were
- 8:15Speaker 1: a lot of good things. Was it perfect? Was he
- 8:17Speaker 1: the best player in baseball? No, but there were a
- 8:20Speaker 1: lot of good things. And if you look at the
- 8:22Speaker 1: overall body of work, definitely above average catcher, borderline, I mean,
- 8:26Speaker 1: really all-star, right? So upper echelon catcher in the sport.
- 8:31Speaker 1: So good for Ole Miss fans to recognize that. And
- 8:34Speaker 1: I've got the Adley shirt on, by the way.
- 8:36Speaker 3: But.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Um, let's keep the conversation going right now. Let's bring in, uh,
- 8:41Speaker 1: our first guest here.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Um, Steve, you're going to have to tell me, cause I,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I apparently was told last time around that I said
- 8:47Speaker 1: your name wrong. So I apologize for that, but tell
- 8:49Speaker 1: it to me straight one time. And then I've got
- 8:51Speaker 1: you from here on out. Oh, we had you muted.
- 8:57Speaker 5: It's spelled with a W, but it's pronounced without it. Molesky. Molesky.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:02Speaker 1: No W on the right. So I said Molesky last time.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That's the last time. Steve Molesky joining us.
- 9:08Speaker 2: One of the stars.
- 9:09Speaker 6: You couldn't say it the way I've never heard it
- 9:10Speaker 6: so far. I've heard it thousands of times.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure, Steve. Well, it's great to have you on.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You guys are crushing it on Birdland territory too. It's
- 9:19Speaker 1: been awesome to listen to. So first take us through
- 9:23Speaker 1: the Adley return and how cool it was for O's
- 9:26Speaker 1: fans to experience him coming back, but then also. Adley
- 9:29Speaker 1: burned them, and they ultimately lost the game.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Well, I mean, who knows their pitchers better than Adley?
- 9:35Speaker 6: Not just the actual stuff they have, but how they
- 9:38Speaker 6: sequence it. So, I mean, maybe some of that was
- 9:40Speaker 6: on display last night. But, you know, the Orioles love
- 9:44Speaker 6: their own. They love original Orioles. And Adley is the
- 9:47Speaker 6: ultimate original Oriole, one-one pick. There's only been three in
- 9:51Speaker 6: the history of the Oriole franchise. And, of course, the
- 9:53Speaker 6: draft dates to the mid sixties. And he was the
- 9:56Speaker 6: face of the rebuild, a rebuild that went from 115
- 9:59Speaker 6: losses to 101 wins in an AL East title, two playoffs.
- 10:03Speaker 6: They didn't win a playoff game, we know, but they
- 10:06Speaker 6: got there and they went from worst to first on
- 10:08Speaker 6: his watch and he delivered. And so last few years
- 10:13Speaker 6: were not what he wanted. This year was much better.
- 10:16Speaker 6: And I think ultimately, Scott will never know this answer,
- 10:18Speaker 6: but it seems like the Orioles felt like they wanted
- 10:20Speaker 6: to resign him, but they weren't going to be able to.
- 10:23Speaker 6: And so they learned their lesson with Machado. They traded
- 10:28Speaker 6: him with two months to go, and they got what
- 10:31Speaker 6: looked like a decent haul, and it wasn't. And so
- 10:34Speaker 6: if you wait till the final two months, the package
- 10:38Speaker 6: goes way down. This package was robust, obviously.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Who was the last guy that you think would have
- 10:45Speaker 4: received that type of ovation, that type of impact on
- 10:49Speaker 4: Orioles fans?
- 10:51Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:52Speaker 6: There are not many, probably. There really aren't. Sometimes when
- 10:56Speaker 6: you leave, the Orioles fans don't like that. They didn't
- 10:59Speaker 6: like it when Mike Messina went to New York. That
- 11:01Speaker 6: was free agent. That's very, very different. And so, yeah,
- 11:07Speaker 6: they did. That was a great night for Oriole fans
- 11:11Speaker 6: and classy of the organization, the tributes, and Adley handled
- 11:14Speaker 6: it classy. And he was asked, of course, pregame, any
- 11:17Speaker 6: hard feelings against Mike Elias? And he said, none whatsoever.
- 11:20Speaker 6: And he said, I love the Orioles, always will. And
- 11:23Speaker 6: he sits tight with that group. Gunner, Adley, Couser, Mountcastle,
- 11:27Speaker 6: those are thick as thieves. They're friends for life. And
- 11:31Speaker 6: so you could see the affection on the field. You
- 11:33Speaker 6: don't see that often in a Major League Baseball game,
- 11:36Speaker 6: guys practically hugging at home plate.
- 11:38Speaker 5: But we saw it last night.
- 11:41Speaker 3: I want to dive into this Orioles team now and
- 11:43Speaker 3: talk a little about, you know, basically I call resurgence here.
- 11:46Speaker 3: It's been and I've been a component. I wasn't a
- 11:51Speaker 3: fan when they had all the prospects. They didn't do
- 11:53Speaker 3: anything with them. And I always said they got to
- 11:55Speaker 3: trade some of these guys so they can get better
- 11:57Speaker 3: and better. You know, you never know what a prospect
- 11:59Speaker 3: is going to be. But now they kind of turned
- 12:01Speaker 3: it around a little bit. My question to you is,
- 12:04Speaker 3: you know, why and and how? Is this team in
- 12:07Speaker 3: a playoff run right now? What has been the key
- 12:09Speaker 3: for this team's run moving forward? And how do they
- 12:12Speaker 3: have the shot to make this playoffs?
- 12:15Speaker 6: They seem like a team with nine lives this year,
- 12:18Speaker 6: and they probably used up seven or eight of them already.
- 12:20Speaker 6: And every time they get momentum, they don't keep it.
- 12:23Speaker 6: We thought after the Couser catch finally got to 500,
- 12:27Speaker 6: it was a four-month climb to get there. Now here
- 12:30Speaker 6: they go, and they've lost three straight cents by four
- 12:33Speaker 6: combined runs. At different times, they've had different things come through.
- 12:37Speaker 6: The rotation for a long time carried them, and so
- 12:41Speaker 6: it's been a little iffy late because some guys are
- 12:43Speaker 6: really heavy on their innings now. The bullpen was on
- 12:46Speaker 6: a tremendous roll for about two weeks, and now it's
- 12:49Speaker 6: given up late homers back-to-back. The offense is Jekyll and Hyde.
- 12:55Speaker 6: They went to Tampa. They scored 26 runs in four games.
- 12:59Speaker 6: The next six games against the Yankees in Tampa, they
- 13:02Speaker 6: scored 14 runs. They started their last road trip 5-1
- 13:06Speaker 6: by scoring 43 runs. They went to Colorado and got 9.
- 13:13Speaker 6: You just don't know. Throw a dart and the Orioles
- 13:16Speaker 6: offense may score 8 or may score 1.
- 13:18Speaker 5: We've seen both.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Do you feel like it's an implementation of the players
- 13:25Speaker 4: that are out there? Do you feel like it's how...
- 13:27Speaker 4: They're implemented. There's some questionable pinch hitting, but not pinch
- 13:32Speaker 4: hitting because you don't win and lose a season on
- 13:34Speaker 4: pinch hitting. But it's the question of why they're making
- 13:37Speaker 4: the decisions based on a roster that they have.
- 13:42Speaker 6: Well, here's what I wrote today, and I asked Craig
- 13:44Speaker 6: Albernaz's question after.
- 13:45Speaker 5: The game last night.
- 13:46Speaker 6: And the Orioles are really wedded to the left-right platoon edge.
- 13:52Speaker 6: And when they were winning the AL East, the stats
- 13:54Speaker 6: could show you They were playing the platoon advantage about
- 13:58Speaker 6: as well as anybody in baseball is working for them.
- 14:02Speaker 6: In my opinion, it's not working anywhere near that.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Well last night.
- 14:05Speaker 6: The seventh inning last night, 3-3 game, two on, two out,
- 14:10Speaker 6: and Carlos Narvaez is batting. And he has really struggled
- 14:14Speaker 6: as an Oriole. After last night, he's 5-for-55.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Without an RBI. That's a 3-0-3 OPS, 30% K rate.
- 14:19Speaker 5: They allowed him to hit well.
- 14:25Speaker 6: In a tie game with two on, with a full
- 14:28Speaker 6: bench of lefty hitters, Eric Miller, lefty, was in for
- 14:31Speaker 6: the Red Sox. But the Orioles, to me, and to
- 14:34Speaker 6: hear Craig Abernath explain it, what allowed Nervais to hit
- 14:38Speaker 6: there is simply he bats right against the left. And
- 14:41Speaker 6: they didn't want the left-on-left Basayo. Basayo doesn't have great
- 14:45Speaker 6: numbers against left, but Basayo has an 800 runners in
- 14:48Speaker 6: scoring position stat. And, oh, by the way, the runners
- 14:51Speaker 6: in scoring position OPS this year for Nervais is 272.
- 14:55Speaker 5: And he's five for 50. So to me, that was
- 14:57Speaker 5: a no-brainer.
- 14:59Speaker 6: I know it's left on left, but Basayo, he can
- 15:03Speaker 6: make a one-for-one move.
- 15:04Speaker 5: He comes in to catch.
- 15:05Speaker 6: The Orioles are keeping three catchers with one reason to
- 15:09Speaker 6: do that is you can pinch hit for Pozo and Nervais.
- 15:12Speaker 5: But they didn't.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Now, in the very next inning, they have a player
- 15:15Speaker 6: they just acquired who Mike Elias said could be an
- 15:18Speaker 6: impact player. Lewis Robert Jr., who had homered in that game,
- 15:22Speaker 6: he was not allowed to hit. And apparently the reasoning
- 15:25Speaker 6: there was he was facing a right-handed pitcher. So they
- 15:29Speaker 6: batted Basayo then. But the game was all ready. The
- 15:32Speaker 6: Red Sox were up two then. They were two outs
- 15:35Speaker 6: and none on. If Basayo homers, they're still trailing. So
- 15:38Speaker 6: that puzzled me greatly last night. Moves into seventh and eighth.
- 15:42Speaker 6: And I pointed out in my Substack article today, They
- 15:45Speaker 6: didn't lose that game because of managerial moves. They gave
- 15:48Speaker 6: up four homers. They blew a 3-1 lead. They got
- 15:51Speaker 6: scored on in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th. They
- 15:55Speaker 6: didn't hit for most of the second half of the game.
- 15:57Speaker 6: There were plenty of reasons they lost to the Red Sox,
- 16:00Speaker 6: but there were also some puzzling decisions.
- 16:02Speaker 4: All right, Steve, you've totally gone off on the Luis
- 16:06Speaker 4: Robert thing.
- 16:07Speaker 5: I have to ask.
- 16:08Speaker 4: You're there. I joked about it when he got claimed
- 16:12Speaker 4: off of waivers from the Mets. If Luis Robert has
- 16:16Speaker 4: a good month, do you think the Orioles bring him
- 16:19Speaker 4: back on his $ 20 million player option?
- 16:23Speaker 6: I would not rule that out because if you look
- 16:28Speaker 6: at this season, the outfield offense has been very disappointing.
- 16:35Speaker 6: Now that is a gamble on top of a gamble
- 16:38Speaker 6: for $ 20 million.
- 16:38Speaker 5: So they're going to give them five as it is
- 16:41Speaker 5: in this month.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Um, But if he's just a platoon player, I guess not.
- 16:47Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 16:48Speaker 6: How will you know in a month? What if he
- 16:50Speaker 6: has a great month? That still doesn't tell you he's
- 16:52Speaker 6: going to be healthy and good next year.
- 16:55Speaker 5: But I would not rule it out.
- 16:57Speaker 6: And at least the option is there for the Orioles
- 17:00Speaker 6: that they don't have to give up a player. They
- 17:02Speaker 6: don't have to beat somebody in free agency. And here
- 17:05Speaker 6: they could get an outfielder who does have a silver
- 17:07Speaker 6: slugger on his resume.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Oh, Steve.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Steve, don't tell me that. I'm not even an Orioles fan.
- 17:16Speaker 4: I'm not a fan of any team. I just don't
- 17:18Speaker 4: know that, like, anyway, whatever.
- 17:21Speaker 5: It's been a while since he's been good.
- 17:24Speaker 4: It has been a while, but yet he did sign
- 17:26Speaker 4: another $ 20 million deal this year, and the Orioles have
- 17:29Speaker 4: said there's no such thing as a bad one-year deal. So, anyway,
- 17:34Speaker 4: we'll get to that when that happens. Is this team
- 17:39Speaker 4: still a little miscast? Are they still playing out of
- 17:45Speaker 4: a little unconventional because Westberg's out and you have Gunnar
- 17:48Speaker 4: Henderson who probably should be a third baseman and Jackson
- 17:53Speaker 4: Holiday still trying to get his feet wet. Are they
- 17:56Speaker 4: still a miscast team on the position side, but now
- 18:00Speaker 4: they're starting to hit more as the halfway mark of
- 18:03Speaker 4: the season on has gone better for them?
- 18:08Speaker 6: I would guess whenever this season ends and they evaluate it,
- 18:12Speaker 6: it's going to be a difficult evaluation because what do
- 18:15Speaker 6: you hang your hat on? The rotation looks pretty solid
- 18:19Speaker 6: and they've locked up Braddish and Boz long-term. They have
- 18:22Speaker 6: Brandon Young under team control. So that looks okay for
- 18:26Speaker 6: next year. The bullpen, if these are two big ifs,
- 18:29Speaker 6: if Bautista comes back and he's close and if Helsley
- 18:33Speaker 6: is healthy next year, he's probably going to, Come back
- 18:36Speaker 6: to the Orioles, you might have two decent closers to
- 18:39Speaker 6: add to that bullpen. And then they've got to work
- 18:41Speaker 6: on the offense, which if you look at the raw stats,
- 18:44Speaker 6: the Orioles are one of the top four or five
- 18:46Speaker 6: scoring teams in the American League. If you watch them nightly,
- 18:49Speaker 6: it doesn't feel like that because they have nights like
- 18:53Speaker 6: a series like Colorado where they scored nine runs, one
- 18:56Speaker 6: of the worst performances by a visiting team in Coors
- 18:59Speaker 6: Field in a long time. So it's hard to evaluate.
- 19:03Speaker 6: There's nothing consistent for this team this year. I think
- 19:07Speaker 6: they're pretty set.
- 19:08Speaker 5: In a rotation. The bullpen, the bulk of it is set,
- 19:12Speaker 5: but they've got.
- 19:12Speaker 6: To figure out their offense for 2027.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I want to talk about one of my favorite players
- 19:19Speaker 3: who I played with and now get to watch too,
- 19:21Speaker 3: Pete Alonzo, man.
- 19:22Speaker 2: This guy has been absolutely fantastic.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Can you just talk about him, not only as a
- 19:28Speaker 3: player in the clubhouse, and what he's brought to this
- 19:30Speaker 3: Orioles team to get them into this picture right now
- 19:33Speaker 3: where they're at?
- 19:35Speaker 6: He seems too good to be true, but he is.
- 19:39Speaker 6: I mean, I've been in that club now. I don't
- 19:43Speaker 6: quite get what the Mets are, didn't see there. I
- 19:46Speaker 6: just don't. I mean, the guy hits, he leads, he's great.
- 19:50Speaker 5: In the community.
- 19:50Speaker 6: He's already done things in the Baltimore community. He always
- 19:54Speaker 6: says the right thing and.
- 19:55Speaker 5: It's not.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Fake.
- 19:58Speaker 5: It's completely sincere in every way.
- 20:01Speaker 6: I mean, I've seen that guy in the Oriole clubhouse,
- 20:03Speaker 6: you know, eight different reporters will come up to him and,
- 20:06Speaker 6: and two or three team staffers with stuff they need,
- 20:09Speaker 6: and he accommodates everybody.
- 20:10Speaker 5: It's just unbelievable.
- 20:12Speaker 6: And so he's been a great leader for the Orioles.
- 20:14Speaker 6: He's been everything they could have wanted. I mean, is
- 20:17Speaker 6: it crazy to say $ 155 million.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Is a bargain? I don't know.
- 20:21Speaker 6: With baseball, maybe it is. But this guy's production, he's
- 20:25Speaker 6: having as good a year as he had for the
- 20:27Speaker 6: Mets last year, which was tremendous.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Yeah, big loss by the Mets there. But big gain
- 20:33Speaker 4: for Baltimore, not just the team, but the city too.
- 20:36Speaker 4: What does this rotation look like? Because obviously we haven't
- 20:40Speaker 4: really followed the Orioles as a playoff team, but even
- 20:44Speaker 4: with the loss last night, they're a game and a
- 20:46Speaker 4: half out. What does this rotation look like going into
- 20:51Speaker 4: a three-game series and then possibly winning it to move
- 20:54Speaker 4: on to a division series that's a five-game series? How
- 20:59Speaker 4: does it stack up if you sit here today and
- 21:02Speaker 4: make that rotation?
- 21:05Speaker 6: Here's what Steve would too, which doesn't mean that's what
- 21:09Speaker 6: the Orioles would do. They have a core four here.
- 21:12Speaker 6: In any way you want to stack them, Braddish, Rodgers, Boz,
- 21:16Speaker 6: and Young. And I don't think Bassett gets in the
- 21:18Speaker 6: playoff rotation. Maybe he's a bullpen guy again if they
- 21:22Speaker 6: get that far. To me, Kyle Braddish is still the
- 21:25Speaker 6: best they have. He's starting to maybe tire a little bit.
- 21:28Speaker 6: The innings are catching up to him. He only pitched
- 21:30Speaker 6: 50 innings last year, rehabbing his way back. Now he's
- 21:34Speaker 6: 100 over that. but he's the best they got. Rodgers
- 21:39Speaker 6: has been on a real roll, one or two blips,
- 21:41Speaker 6: but he's an under-3RA pitcher for about two or three months.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Abbas is really coming on in the second half, and Young,
- 21:52Speaker 6: they win more games with him than anybody. It's hard
- 21:54Speaker 6: to just– they're really very close, but I think I
- 21:59Speaker 6: would go Braddish, Rodgers– I think that's what I would do.
- 22:06Speaker 6: And maybe at Brandon Young, he's coming in the fifth inning,
- 22:09Speaker 6: one of those games.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Hey, I want to finish where we started. Hadley Rutschman.
- 22:19Speaker 1: So you got to cover him for a while. And
- 22:21Speaker 1: this was a dream day one for him back in Baltimore.
- 22:26Speaker 1: With him, I know going through the elbow this year,
- 22:28Speaker 1: and it might not be 100%, just overall, what are
- 22:32Speaker 1: the Red Sox getting here? You know, what makes Red
- 22:35Speaker 1: Sox fans look at this and go, wow, I'm glad
- 22:37Speaker 1: we made this move for the stretch run. Of course,
- 22:39Speaker 1: he helped them win one game here and then for
- 22:42Speaker 1: a whole nother season.
- 22:45Speaker 6: Adley must have made some winter adjustments. He's pretty tight
- 22:48Speaker 6: lipped about things like that. So he's not going to
- 22:50Speaker 6: tell you why he's swinging it better this year. But
- 22:52Speaker 6: his OPS was 760 with the Orioles. I know he
- 22:55Speaker 6: hadn't hit with the Red Sox until last night. And
- 22:58Speaker 6: so maybe now they get what the Orioles saw. So
- 23:01Speaker 6: his offense trended way up this year. So did his defense.
- 23:06Speaker 6: It was lauded all year. He was throwing out a
- 23:08Speaker 6: higher percentage than he has in a few years. His
- 23:10Speaker 6: game-calling exceptional framing just scores incredibly high in some defensive metrics.
- 23:17Speaker 6: So he was the total package for the Orioles, and
- 23:20Speaker 6: a switch hitter, of course. And so, you know, the
- 23:24Speaker 6: Orioles didn't play a lot of big games on his watch.
- 23:26Speaker 6: So we don't really know. Is he a big-game player
- 23:28Speaker 6: for the Red Sox in October?
- 23:30Speaker 5: I don't know. I guess we're going to see.
- 23:32Speaker 6: But I think they got a good one. And obviously
- 23:34Speaker 6: he's a great teammate. He was a leader for the Orioles.
- 23:37Speaker 6: And so I think the Red Sox will be happy
- 23:40Speaker 6: with that. And I think the Orioles potentially seem happy with,
- 23:44Speaker 6: you know, the science and it's been incredible on their farm.
- 23:46Speaker 6: And Andy Azekar was just South Atlantic League player of
- 23:49Speaker 6: the month at high A for Baltimore. And they like
- 23:53Speaker 6: some of these young kids they got.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I like it.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I like it for Boston. This is definitely going to
- 24:01Speaker 1: help them, and it's a league where it's tough to
- 24:03Speaker 1: find a catcher like that. So, Steve Molesky, thank you
- 24:07Speaker 1: for joining us. Good to see you, bud.
- 24:10Speaker 2: All right, guys.
- 24:11Speaker 5: Thank you so much.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 24:12Speaker 1: All right, that's Steve, and also that's Talking Adly, by

- 24:50Speaker 1: QR code right side of your screen. Be right back.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Can I dedicate our SeatGeek segment right now to one series?
- 25:00Speaker 1: And I know we touched on it yesterday, but let's
- 25:01Speaker 1: line it up, right? I mean, I think it's pretty
- 25:04Speaker 1: obvious that there is a division still up for grabs.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I mean, there's multiple, right? The Rays are still only
- 25:10Speaker 1: up three games on the Yankees, but we're focusing on
- 25:11Speaker 1: the NL East. The Braves and the Phillies match up.
- 25:14Speaker 1: We cover this a lot on Thursday. So if you
- 25:16Speaker 1: missed anything, I encourage you to check out segments on
- 25:19Speaker 1: Thursday's show, including a conversation with Tom McCarthy, Philly's play-by-play broadcaster,
- 25:23Speaker 1: but Todd father, I'm going to do it this way.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Seat geek, which seat do you want? As in which
- 25:27Speaker 1: game do you want?
- 25:29Speaker 5: Okay.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I think I know what the answer is, but let's
- 25:31Speaker 1: do it like a fantasy draft. So tonight you have
- 25:34Speaker 1: Chris sale against Christopher Sanchez. Then you have Martine Perez
- 25:38Speaker 1: on Saturday against Zach Wheeler.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And then it is, I know it's elder on Monday.
- 25:45Speaker 1: So I guess it's Molly on Sunday.
- 25:47Speaker 4: It's not Elder on Monday anymore. It's Grant Holmes on Monday.
- 25:50Speaker 4: They just switched it. But Grant Holmes, delicious, delicious salad
- 25:55Speaker 4: that he's working versus Lizardo.
- 25:57Speaker 3: True.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Pasta Lizardo. Okay.
- 26:00Speaker 1: All right, so Todd, I'm giving you first dibs.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Well, anytime Chris Sale is pitching, I want to be there.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I will be going to the game tonight on SeatGeek.
- 26:10Speaker 3: If I was going, that's the one I would pick.
- 26:13Speaker 3: And I'm looking for a seat. Literally right behind home plate.
- 26:17Speaker 3: It doesn't have to be the best seat. And I
- 26:19Speaker 3: know SeatGeek's got it covered for me. So I will
- 26:21Speaker 3: find that seat. If you're a fan, you're a young kid,
- 26:24Speaker 3: if you can get behind home plate or get a
- 26:27Speaker 3: little side view from below behind the dugout.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 26:32Speaker 3: And this is going to be a fantastic game, Sanchez.
- 26:34Speaker 3: I'm looking for a low scoring game, but also a
- 26:38Speaker 3: really good thrown game.
- 26:39Speaker 2: So I'm going to game one. I will see you
- 26:42Speaker 2: guys later.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I'm actually picking second here, Kratz. I'm going to take
- 26:46Speaker 1: Monday's Grant Holmes. I know that's going to switch now
- 26:49Speaker 1: to Jesus Lizardo. I want to watch Lizardo. I've been
- 26:53Speaker 1: talking about him a little more recently on the program lately,
- 26:56Speaker 1: and he's, I think, not getting talked about enough in
- 26:59Speaker 1: our sport for the swing and miss. And to me,
- 27:01Speaker 1: how that looks in the postseason could be a huge
- 27:04Speaker 1: difference for the Phillies in a series.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Doesn't that sound like a good dish? The way he's
- 27:07Speaker 2: pitching looks like a one. What?
- 27:09Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. You know, can I get a side of
- 27:11Speaker 3: pasta lozardo? Like, that sounds like a good Italian dish.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Maybe I just roll with this.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Pasta lozardo.
- 27:17Speaker 4: I like it. I like it. I'm going to game
- 27:20Speaker 4: three because I want to see if the Philly– look,
- 27:24Speaker 4: when you go game one, you're going to face Chris
- 27:27Speaker 4: Sale in the playoffs, and you're like, whew, tough matchup.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I want to see how the Phillies do against Tyler Malley.
- 27:32Speaker 4: That could be a precursor of what they do in
- 27:34Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 27:38Speaker 2: SeatGeek.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Territory 1-0. 10% off your next set of MLB tickets.
- 27:42Speaker 1: That's 10% off with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you
- 27:45Speaker 1: click the link in the description to download the app. Hey,
- 27:50Speaker 1: Scooble allowed 10 hits, matching a career high against the Cardinals.
- 27:55Speaker 1: They pulled off a walk-off win. That was a big
- 27:57Speaker 1: knock for Teoscar Hernandez, who has had his struggles this season.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And also, I will say, 5-2-3's Two earned runs. It's
- 28:04Speaker 1: not like he got shelled. All of the hits were singles. But, yeah,
- 28:07Speaker 1: it's not classic Scooble yet. Do we think that classic
- 28:11Speaker 1: Scooble will appear here? Or, you know, I brought this
- 28:15Speaker 1: up yesterday, I think, for the first time in a while, Kratz.
- 28:17Speaker 1: He had surgery this year.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Came back quick.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:24Speaker 2: It's real. Quicker than ever.
- 28:26Speaker 4: His velocity's back. His velocity came back right away after
- 28:29Speaker 4: the surgery. Yes, that is something to definitely watch. but
- 28:34Speaker 4: also it's okay to give up singles. Like that's what
- 28:38Speaker 4: people are afraid of. And I think that's why we
- 28:40Speaker 4: live in this generation of throw it till you blow it.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Like just throw it as hard as you can till
- 28:46Speaker 4: your arm blows out. And I think if you can
- 28:49Speaker 4: pitch and dance around some raindrops with some singles, this
- 28:54Speaker 4: is what we talk about the playoffs. It's so hard
- 28:56Speaker 4: to string together a ton of hits against good pitchers.
- 28:59Speaker 4: Because if you watched when Scooble got guys on, It
- 29:03Speaker 4: was a different type of locked in. So I'm just
- 29:06Speaker 4: saying it's okay. It is crazy though, that he gave
- 29:09Speaker 4: up that many hits.
- 29:12Speaker 1: And also I just wanted to mention on Otani. So
- 29:16Speaker 1: he sat right, Todd, and this is a good back
- 29:18Speaker 1: and forth. Apparently Dave Roberts just kind of told him like,
- 29:21Speaker 1: Hey dude, you're out.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:23Speaker 1: And he sent him back like a, a yes, sir.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Like a salute. I mean, he's dealing with biceps and
- 29:29Speaker 1: neck discomfort and his knee is still a problem. Sometimes
- 29:34Speaker 1: somebody needs to tell you, hey, dude, take a day
- 29:38Speaker 1: or two. They're not going to IL him. but, or
- 29:40Speaker 1: at least it sounds like they're not, but take, take
- 29:42Speaker 1: a day or two or three or four. You're there.
- 29:45Speaker 1: They're going to win the division. Obviously they want to
- 29:47Speaker 1: try and get one of the top two seeds, but yeah,
- 29:50Speaker 1: Shohei needs to be, he needs to be feeling good
- 29:52Speaker 1: at the plate heading into October. Forget the mound for
- 29:55Speaker 1: a moment.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Well, I think you said it best, two different things.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Take a break, but he needs to be well on
- 30:01Speaker 3: the plate coming October. Well, listen, you've got three weeks.
- 30:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 30:06Speaker 2: You put him on an.
- 30:07Speaker 3: IL stint, that's 15 days. Then he's got, what, five
- 30:11Speaker 3: to seven games to get ready to go? That's not
- 30:14Speaker 3: ideal either. I mean, for most, maybe it's okay for him.
- 30:17Speaker 3: So he's going to have to push through this, in
- 30:19Speaker 3: my opinion, and he's going to have to understand that
- 30:23Speaker 3: he's going to bet– He's going to be the top dog.
- 30:25Speaker 3: He's going to bat where he is right now, and
- 30:27Speaker 3: he's going to be lethal, hopefully.
- 30:30Speaker 2: So it's damned if I do, damned if I don't
- 30:33Speaker 2: kind of feel.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Hey, Byron Buxton is going to need off-season surgery from
- 30:41Speaker 1: Bob Nightingale Jr. He wants to make one more try
- 30:43Speaker 1: at returning this season. Yeah, you feel for Buck, and
- 30:50Speaker 1: it's the hip. That's a tough– spot on the body
- 30:54Speaker 1: can you guys help me out with that.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Anything from the the waist down for a guy that's
- 31:04Speaker 3: got speed hello that's not good at all so um
- 31:10Speaker 3: this is a tough one man these injuries for this
- 31:12Speaker 3: guy they just keep on coming i don't there's got
- 31:16Speaker 3: to be something going on man i don't know it's
- 31:18Speaker 3: weird it's weird you feel bad i feel terrible for
- 31:21Speaker 3: this dude because he's a He's a freak of an athlete,
- 31:24Speaker 3: you know, and he talks about wanting to be in
- 31:26Speaker 3: Minnesota and finishing out his career and all that kind
- 31:30Speaker 3: of stuff.
- 31:30Speaker 2: I mean, this one hurts.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Torrey Hunter, probably one of the more eloquent speakers, incredible player,
- 31:38Speaker 4: great person. I heard him talking about Buxton and Trout.
- 31:44Speaker 4: We know what Trout has done. We know Trout has
- 31:46Speaker 4: had injury issues. And Torrey on that interview said, Kind
- 31:52Speaker 4: of feel like Buxton has a higher ceiling than Mike Trout.
- 31:57Speaker 4: That's not some Joe Schmo like me saying something like that.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Torrey Hunter knows what he's looking at when he's talking
- 32:03Speaker 4: about center fielders in the game. And it will always
- 32:07Speaker 4: be tied to injuries. My issue is if he's trying
- 32:12Speaker 4: to get back out there for a team today on
- 32:14Speaker 4: September 4th, that's three and a half back behind three
- 32:19Speaker 4: other teams. then it's probably what he's done most of
- 32:22Speaker 4: his career. Like, I'm trying to stay out there. And
- 32:25Speaker 4: does that make the injury worse? I don't know. Only
- 32:28Speaker 4: him and the medical staff will know. But I'd hate
- 32:30Speaker 4: for him to stay out there on a bad hip
- 32:32Speaker 4: and it becomes something else that then crops up later in,
- 32:36Speaker 4: you know, next season that he kind of, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 4: used too much. Because when something's hurting, you have to
- 32:43Speaker 4: mitigate it by leaning on something else. And that's the
- 32:47Speaker 4: last thing that you want. You want him to be 100% healthy.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Whenever he can be.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Hot corner. Hold up. Hold up. So this show had
- 33:01Speaker 1: Dana Brown, the former general manager of the Astros on
- 33:05Speaker 1: the other day. Okay. He was fired. The Houston Astros
- 33:11Speaker 1: might not just make the playoffs. They might not just
- 33:14Speaker 1: win the division. They might receive a first round buy from,
- 33:20Speaker 1: They won three of four games against the White Sox
- 33:22Speaker 1: just now. Look at the standings. Wow. So the Rays
- 33:27Speaker 1: are in a good spot right now, although they need
- 33:29Speaker 1: to still wrap up the division with the Yankees. The
- 33:32Speaker 1: White Sox are one and a half games up on
- 33:36Speaker 1: the Astros. You want to be able to try and
- 33:38Speaker 1: catch up to a team. You face them head to head.
- 33:40Speaker 1: You do what you need to do. Astros did that.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Hunter Brown in this last game to swing it their way. Varshow,
- 33:46Speaker 1: two-run triple. Altuve, two-run home run. the Houston Astros might
- 33:52Speaker 1: receive a buy. They might be in a position, Kratz,
- 33:56Speaker 1: where they have one of the better pathways to make
- 33:59Speaker 1: a World Series, right? We've talked about the seeding and
- 34:04Speaker 1: how it's going to put a team like the White
- 34:06Speaker 1: Sox or now maybe the Astros in a favorable position.
- 34:10Speaker 1: That's what could happen right now.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Totally.
- 34:13Speaker 4: And to be honest, you know who doesn't want to
- 34:16Speaker 4: see the Astros in the playoffs? The Yankees. They still
- 34:19Speaker 4: haven't beaten... They still haven't advanced in a playoff where
- 34:22Speaker 4: they have to beat the Astros. So that's just a
- 34:26Speaker 4: fun story that could happen once it all plays out.
- 34:29Speaker 4: But if they're able to get this, again, I'll say it,
- 34:34Speaker 4: just like I said it before, if they get the
- 34:36Speaker 4: number two seed over the White Sox, that sets them
- 34:39Speaker 4: up because that side of the bracket is just a
- 34:42Speaker 4: weaker side of the bracket that is going to be
- 34:46Speaker 4: an easier path. Still good teams. but it's an easier path.
- 34:51Speaker 4: But the Astros do it. Now they can set up
- 34:54Speaker 4: their rotation. Now you can have Hunter Brown go game
- 34:57Speaker 4: one and game five instead of game one. And possibly
- 35:01Speaker 4: if you win that series, game two, game three, I
- 35:05Speaker 4: guess he would be able to throw in game two
- 35:07Speaker 4: and possibly not in game five. So anytime you get
- 35:10Speaker 4: your best pitcher to be able to throw twice when
- 35:12Speaker 4: one of your weaknesses is the depth of your rotation,
- 35:16Speaker 4: that would be huge.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't like how you said that about the Yankees.
- 35:22Speaker 3: I was in a good mood until you brought up
- 35:24Speaker 3: the Astros.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Well, talk us out of it. Yeah, tell us. I
- 35:28Speaker 2: would love to talk you out of it, but I can't.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I can't.
- 35:31Speaker 3: That's why it upsets me so much. It's the bugaboo.
- 35:34Speaker 3: It's the bugaboo. Kratzy and I have been a part
- 35:37Speaker 3: of it. It all started, you know, in 17 when
- 35:41Speaker 3: they figuring out what was coming and.
- 35:43Speaker 2: What pitch, and then it just– They cheated. You could
- 35:45Speaker 2: say it.
- 35:47Speaker 3: No, I'm just being nice because I'm trying, I'm upset
- 35:50Speaker 3: about what Kratzy said. So I'm going to, I'm going
- 35:51Speaker 3: to take the high road, but yes, unfortunately for us,
- 35:56Speaker 3: they did. So yeah, it's been the bugaboo anytime. Is
- 36:01Speaker 3: this the year that they find a way to do it?
- 36:04Speaker 3: Only time will tell still long ways to go, but yes,
- 36:07Speaker 3: it'll change. It'll change the playoff. You know, some teams
- 36:11Speaker 3: might go higher. Some might go lower. We'll see in
- 36:13Speaker 3: these next 2022 game, but yeah, I don't, I wouldn't
- 36:17Speaker 3: want to see him either. I wouldn't want to see
- 36:19Speaker 3: him either.
- 36:22Speaker 1: But that's the path we're talking about. So we mentioned
- 36:23Speaker 1: this the other day. It's just that when we did
- 36:25Speaker 1: this segment, Kratz, remember, we didn't even really factor the Astros.
- 36:29Speaker 1: And we factored them into being on this side of
- 36:31Speaker 1: the bracket. But a buy is an advantage. Straight up.
- 36:36Speaker 1: No doubt about it.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Right?
- 36:38Speaker 2: You think so? Oh, I don't even think it's close. Wait, wait.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I don't think it's close. Okay.
- 36:45Speaker 2: For pitching, yes. Yeah, but for everything. You have to
- 36:49Speaker 2: win another series.
- 36:51Speaker 3: How many of those teams that play right away end
- 36:54Speaker 3: up beating those eventual... We've had this conversation. We don't
- 36:57Speaker 3: have to go down that road. But I'm just saying,
- 36:59Speaker 3: it's an advantage pitching-wise.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Of course it is. 100%. 100%.
- 37:04Speaker 3: But I still think those teams have a major advantage
- 37:07Speaker 3: playing two, if not three, games. They're going. Everybody else
- 37:11Speaker 3: is five days off. And I'll die on that horse.
- 37:13Speaker 3: I know a lot of Kratzy, AJ... Some people have said, oh,
- 37:19Speaker 3: you need to get– the bye is great. It's going
- 37:21Speaker 3: to help you either way. I would rather be playing games.
- 37:25Speaker 3: I think there's still a way to have those teams still–
- 37:29Speaker 3: like they're playing meaningful games. You win those games, you've
- 37:31Speaker 3: already been part of pressure situations.
- 37:34Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 37:35Speaker 3: You're going into a hostile environment, whatever stadium you're at.
- 37:38Speaker 3: It's okay because I just played two or three hard-fought games.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I know what it's like, my opinion, but ultimately– That's
- 37:47Speaker 3: why everybody loves the game. But I think the advantage
- 37:50Speaker 3: is playing more games. But I do want the bye.
- 37:54Speaker 3: That means we did better.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Of course. Of course.
- 37:57Speaker 3: But if I'm stuck playing games and win that series,
- 38:01Speaker 3: I think the advantage goes.
- 38:02Speaker 2: To that team. No, no, no.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I mean, that's why we do this. Just let's paint it, okay?
- 38:10Speaker 1: Let's say the Guardians make it and the Astros pass
- 38:15Speaker 1: the White Sox. The Guardians and the White Sox are
- 38:20Speaker 1: going to match up, right?
- 38:22Speaker 2: Sure, yeah.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Kratz?
- 38:26Speaker 4: Yep, yes.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Oh, wait, wait.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Right, yeah, because the White Sox win, right? Their division.
- 38:30Speaker 1: They host the Guardians. Let's say the White Sox win
- 38:32Speaker 1: the division. They host Guardians, okay? They duke it out. Cool.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Somebody won. Astros, chilling, line up their rotation. Not the
- 38:40Speaker 1: deepest rotation in the world. I mean, first off, let's
- 38:43Speaker 1: look at what they just did last night. Like, I
- 38:44Speaker 1: need Hunter Brown lined up. Okay. Hunter Brown lined up
- 38:48Speaker 1: next series. You guys just beat each other up in
- 38:50Speaker 1: like a 50-50 series, right? I think most people would look.
- 38:52Speaker 1: And even if we put the Benham Jam odds on
- 38:55Speaker 1: a series with the White Sox and Guardians, it's probably
- 38:57Speaker 1: pretty close. It's probably plus one or minus 110 on
- 39:01Speaker 1: both sides.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 39:03Speaker 1: So 50-50 chance that you survive. Now you move on.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Now you face the Astros all lined up for next round.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Bullpen's rested. Starters can line up the way they want
- 39:13Speaker 1: to line up. And the Astros are playing at home.
- 39:16Speaker 1: It's a huge advantage.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Huge.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Huge.
- 39:19Speaker 4: But I see what Todd's saying, though, too. And honestly,
- 39:22Speaker 4: throughout my career, and this is what we got to
- 39:25Speaker 4: ask like, current live players that are active today, like,
- 39:30Speaker 4: not playing and sitting out, your timing goes to trash.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And that's kind of what Todd is alluding to. And
- 39:40Speaker 4: also the fact that I've seen, I've been on a
- 39:42Speaker 4: wildcard team that made it to Game 7 of the
- 39:44Speaker 4: World Series. You catch that wave, you ride that wave,
- 39:48Speaker 4: Todd says that all the time, and there is something
- 39:51Speaker 4: to that. That is a 100% agreeable statement, except 100%
- 39:58Speaker 4: of the games that you don't play in, you have
- 40:02Speaker 4: zero chance, zero chance of losing. So you cannot go
- 40:07Speaker 4: into a wildcard series and go, I definitely want to
- 40:10Speaker 4: play these games because we're going to get, we're going
- 40:14Speaker 4: to get on a hot streak. Like you don't want
- 40:16Speaker 4: to play those games. Anything can happen. Broken back, bleeder,
- 40:20Speaker 4: you know, a bad call here or there. And all
- 40:22Speaker 4: of a sudden, crap, we lost that series. How did
- 40:25Speaker 4: that happen? But that, that's my side of the argument.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 40:31Speaker 1: I like it. I'm not like saying this, I'm not,
- 40:34Speaker 1: Todd's dying on this hill. I'm not dying on the hill,
- 40:36Speaker 1: but I like the debate.
- 40:37Speaker 2: I like it. It's good.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Yes.
- 40:40Speaker 4: And I think it matters team to team, too. I
- 40:43Speaker 4: really think it matters team to team. I think there's
- 40:45Speaker 4: some teams that need breaks more than other teams. I
- 40:49Speaker 4: think a young team like the White Sox might not
- 40:51Speaker 4: need breaks. Now, only they know. These dudes are just like,
- 40:55Speaker 4: they're pissing vinegar. They're like, let's go eat a bowl
- 40:57Speaker 4: of Froot Loops, have a Pepsi, and go out there
- 40:59Speaker 4: and roll the pole a little bit. Where I think
- 41:02Speaker 4: like a Dodgers team, they're older, they need that break.
- 41:05Speaker 4: An Astros team, they have a... don't have a deep rotation.
- 41:09Speaker 4: They didn't want to set up Hunter Brown. All that
- 41:11Speaker 4: stuff goes into it too.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Let's keep the talk on the AL West for a
- 41:16Speaker 1: moment because those of you that are like, I still
- 41:20Speaker 1: like the Mariners. It's getting close to jump off the
- 41:24Speaker 1: wagon season soon. I was one of those people that's like,
- 41:27Speaker 1: they're going to figure it out eventually.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Right?
- 41:29Speaker 1: So here's wild card. They're four and a half.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Forget that. Right.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Four and a half with a billion teams to leap.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Wipe that.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Now on the division, four and a half back of Houston.
- 41:43Speaker 5: No, sorry, sorry.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Five games back of Houston, four and a half is
- 41:45Speaker 1: the wild card. Or sorry, I can't read.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, four and a half.
- 41:49Speaker 5: No, six, six.
- 41:50Speaker 1: It's six and four and a half.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Oh, you're right.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Are they not toast? I mean, they'd have to, right.
- 41:55Speaker 1: They're playing crap teams, okay? They're cooked. 17 of their
- 41:59Speaker 1: final 22, I think it's the number right now, is
- 42:02Speaker 1: three worst teams in baseball. Rockies, A's, and Angels. Here's
- 42:07Speaker 1: the problem. If you look at the four worst teams
- 42:10Speaker 1: in baseball, going back to, I had this note and
- 42:13Speaker 1: I have too many notes in front of me.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Where is it?
- 42:15Speaker 1: Here it is. July 6th. That's a while back already.
- 42:18Speaker 1: They're in there.
- 42:20Speaker 2: It's the three teams they're playing plus the Mariners.
- 42:22Speaker 1: So sometimes you might look in the mirror and be like, wait,
- 42:26Speaker 1: I am them.
- 42:26Speaker 2: They stink.
- 42:32Speaker 4: I think they're a good team. They're not going to
- 42:36Speaker 4: be able to make this up.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Why?
- 42:38Speaker 4: Because there's no magic sauce. The magic sauce is them
- 42:42Speaker 4: winning and playing better baseball, and they just haven't done it.
- 42:45Speaker 4: I don't care how crappy they're... I mean, look at that.
- 42:48Speaker 4: You play the A's, the Angels, and the Rockies. In seven,
- 42:54Speaker 4: ten days, you play nine games against three teams that
- 42:58Speaker 4: you should win all nine of those. Even if you
- 43:00Speaker 4: win all nine of those, the other teams that you're chasing,
- 43:04Speaker 4: they have to go 500, and they're still ahead of you. Like, Sorry,
- 43:08Speaker 4: it's just not happening. We're not burying them today, but
- 43:10Speaker 4: maybe Monday we will.
- 43:16Speaker 1: On Deck is presented by Fox 1. All right, so
- 43:18Speaker 1: we've covered some of the teams that are playing this
- 43:21Speaker 1: weekend on Fox 1. Let's continue that. The Diamondbacks. Specifically,
- 43:26Speaker 1: if they will have more reinforcements on the way. And
- 43:29Speaker 1: I know you can't rely on everyone and you eventually
- 43:31Speaker 1: run out of time.
- 43:33Speaker 2: But.
- 43:34Speaker 1: For someone that you know well and you caught, right, Kratz?
- 43:36Speaker 1: You caught Corbin Burns' early career?
- 43:38Speaker 4: Yeah, his big league debut.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Big league debut. Tell me what could happen here. He's
- 43:46Speaker 1: nearing the end of a 15-month rehab from Tommy John surgery.
- 43:49Speaker 1: He signed a mega deal with the Diamondbacks. It was
- 43:53Speaker 1: a devastating loss for them. And it came at a
- 43:56Speaker 1: time when, yeah, you essentially lose him for like two seasons, right?
- 44:01Speaker 2: But.
- 44:02Speaker 1: The Diamondbacks hang around, and they might get back someone
- 44:05Speaker 1: who could be very valuable towards the top of a
- 44:07Speaker 1: rotation here down the stretch.
- 44:10Speaker 4: Or he might be very valuable out of the bullpen.
- 44:12Speaker 4: He might be very valuable. You talk about teams, Garrett
- 44:15Speaker 4: Crochet bringing guys back that might not be that seven-inning
- 44:21Speaker 4: guy that you're paying him to be, but can give
- 44:23Speaker 4: you huge innings. And the playoffs is just all about
- 44:26Speaker 4: your innings. So what can you get? What can you get,
- 44:29Speaker 4: you ask me? You can get a dude who, as
- 44:31Speaker 4: a rookie, had a 2-6-1 ERA coming out of the bullpen.
- 44:36Speaker 4: I'm not saying he's going to be out of the bullpen.
- 44:38Speaker 4: I'm saying in that season, he was just getting his
- 44:43Speaker 4: feet wet in the big leagues, and he was trying
- 44:45Speaker 4: to give us the best outs down the stretch. So
- 44:49Speaker 4: he's been tested in those moments. You're talking about a
- 44:52Speaker 4: dude in the playoffs who threw nine innings. I'm trying
- 44:56Speaker 4: to look it up now. Nine innings.
- 44:59Speaker 2: And.
- 45:00Speaker 4: had a two-something ERA. Basically, he gave up two earned
- 45:05Speaker 4: runs the entire playoffs.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Wait, which playoffs are you talking about?
- 45:09Speaker 4: I'm just talking about in the playoffs. If this team
- 45:14Speaker 4: makes it to the playoffs, they're going to need him
- 45:16Speaker 4: in September to have big innings. He's been there. He's
- 45:19Speaker 4: done that. He has been in those situations throughout his
- 45:23Speaker 4: entire time with the Brewers. And I think the one
- 45:25Speaker 4: year with the Orioles, he played in the playoffs too.
- 45:28Speaker 1: He got one of the starts. That's what I'm talking about. Wait,
- 45:30Speaker 1: I just want to stop you on that one. Do
- 45:32Speaker 1: you remember that outing? Eight innings, five hits, one run.
- 45:36Speaker 4: I didn't remember it until I was going down the list,
- 45:39Speaker 4: and he was killing it. He didn't strike out a
- 45:42Speaker 4: lot of dudes, and I think that's what Diamondback fans
- 45:45Speaker 4: in September need to look at Corbin Burns and go,
- 45:49Speaker 4: he doesn't have that 94 to 96 cutter that he
- 45:53Speaker 4: usually does. But I watched his one outing, and the
- 45:56Speaker 4: cutter movement– is awesome. And so I think he's going
- 46:02Speaker 4: to give you something that I don't know that you
- 46:05Speaker 4: can just find anywhere else. And I think the Diamondbacks
- 46:09Speaker 4: are going to need to lean on whatever innings they
- 46:11Speaker 4: can get from him. If he can go three innings,
- 46:13Speaker 4: then the next out and go four. You build them
- 46:16Speaker 4: up to that four to five inning range for the playoffs.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Those are going to be huge, huge innings that you're
- 46:23Speaker 4: just not getting from anybody else right now consistently in
- 46:26Speaker 4: their rotation.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Interesting. Interesting.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Might be Tuesday too, Todd.
- 46:34Speaker 2: That's crazy. That's what I'm seeing here.
- 46:36Speaker 1: I'm trying.
- 46:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:38Speaker 1: It looks like early next week could be the return.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Do you think it's smart coming in this late in
- 46:43Speaker 2: the year? Yes.
- 46:46Speaker 1: You got nothing to lose. He's a veteran on a
- 46:47Speaker 1: big contract. I mean, what's the worst that happened?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Nothing to lose. Yeah.
- 46:51Speaker 1: What do you have to lose?
- 46:52Speaker 2: It's hurt again. I don't know. I'm not saying it's
- 46:57Speaker 2: going to happen. Right. Yeah, I get it. No doubt.
- 47:00Speaker 3: But to come in and be like, hey, you've got
- 47:03Speaker 3: to amp up and give me three of the best
- 47:05Speaker 3: things you've got, you don't think he's going to be
- 47:06Speaker 3: amped up and trying to throw, hopefully not, 100 miles
- 47:10Speaker 3: an hour? If I'm bringing this guy back, it's to
- 47:14Speaker 3: be that dude, in my humble opinion.
- 47:18Speaker 2: This is why you got him. Why not?
- 47:23Speaker 4: No, I hear what you're saying, but I think that's
- 47:26Speaker 4: why I'm saying the expectation– Doesn't necessarily need to be that.
- 47:31Speaker 4: But he's going to give you– even a mediocre Corbin
- 47:35Speaker 4: Burns is better than the majority of what you're running
- 47:38Speaker 4: out there from a.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Opener.
- 47:41Speaker 4: And the whole injury risk stuff, look, we've– what did
- 47:45Speaker 4: you say, Scott? 15 months or 17 months?
- 47:49Speaker 1: 15 months.
- 47:51Speaker 4: So they've taken this. It's not like we're sitting there,
- 47:54Speaker 4: you know, a normal Tommy John– Rehab that's not an
- 47:59Speaker 4: internal bracing is 12 to 15 months. They're not coming
- 48:03Speaker 4: back and saying, hey, we need you at 13 months.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I know it's a little early, but we don't want
- 48:08Speaker 4: to waste your bullets in the minor leagues. They've run this.
- 48:12Speaker 4: People argue you can go to 17 months. I get that.
- 48:15Speaker 4: They've run it. To me, you want him to throw,
- 48:18Speaker 4: even if you're not in a race, you want him
- 48:20Speaker 4: to throw this last month so that you don't go
- 48:23Speaker 4: into next year saying, Okay, well, we don't know exactly.
- 48:26Speaker 4: He turns it up, and then he goes through an
- 48:30Speaker 4: entire offseason of being as 100% healthy as you can
- 48:34Speaker 4: be to hit next year. So I'm not as fearful
- 48:37Speaker 4: in this case of a veteran getting hurt.
- 48:41Speaker 5: Understood.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Understood. But if he's there, it's go. It's go time
- 48:45Speaker 2: for me.
- 48:46Speaker 3: It's a starter. It's a dude. And guess what? Give
- 48:51Speaker 3: us what you got because, like you said, I'll take
- 48:54Speaker 3: a mediocre– corbin and be fine with that for.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Sure yep hey you can watch the diamondbacks and you
- 49:02Speaker 1: can also watch the padres one of those teams going
- 49:04Speaker 1: to make it one of them is not going to
- 49:05Speaker 1: make it to the playoffs this weekend uh diamondbacks are
- 49:08Speaker 1: playing the astros 715 eastern that's tomorrow saturday yankees and

- 49:33Speaker 1: call 1-800-GAMBLER. Slap hands coming up next, and that's the
- 49:37Speaker 1: last you'll see from us live until Tuesday. Hey, let's slap.
- 49:52Speaker 1: This is actually our minute to get in some love
- 49:54Speaker 1: for PCA and some football friends of his, including Caleb Williams. Oh,
- 50:00Speaker 1: and basketball friends of his, too. Caleb Wilson. And I
- 50:03Speaker 1: don't know how to say the third guy's name. So
- 50:05Speaker 1: I'm not going to try and sound like I don't
- 50:06Speaker 1: know ball, but three of them there and they're cheering
- 50:10Speaker 1: on PCA. They started the PCA chant and what happened?
- 50:13Speaker 1: Crats PCA won them the game. They also hung out afterwards,
- 50:15Speaker 1: but PCA had the two run Homer on the low
- 50:18Speaker 1: changeup from Logan Henderson. And you got to just tip
- 50:21Speaker 1: your cap. Logan Henderson's changeup, by the way, this year
- 50:23Speaker 1: is ridiculous. And, but that was the, that was the
- 50:26Speaker 1: decider to one Cubs won it.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Pete Crowe's a vibe, bro. He's a vibe. PCA.
- 50:33Speaker 4: That's the group right there that's running Chicago right now.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Chicago sports scene is hot, and PCA is leading it
- 50:39Speaker 4: with all them boys in that picture. And PCA actually
- 50:43Speaker 4: didn't have an RBI until last night's game against the
- 50:46Speaker 4: Brewers this season. So if he starts beating the Brewers up,
- 50:49Speaker 4: that might be tough for the playoffs.
- 50:52Speaker 1: You're saying that was his first RBI against Milwaukee?
- 50:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Got it. Yeah, no, Milwaukee's pitched him well. They've had
- 50:59Speaker 1: a good game plan against him. Also, I need to look,
- 51:01Speaker 1: you know, he really changed his stance and where he
- 51:03Speaker 1: was standing in the box. So if you look, and
- 51:05Speaker 1: I know that was the first, what, almost two months
- 51:07Speaker 1: of the season. I'm not saying that you disregard the
- 51:11Speaker 1: beginning of the season, but it was a different piece
- 51:13Speaker 1: of the day. That's fair, right?
- 51:15Speaker 4: Totally, totally. That pitch was nasty, too, that he hit out.
- 51:18Speaker 4: You don't hit that ball out. I mean, you get
- 51:20Speaker 4: a good hit, but not as bad.
- 51:23Speaker 1: No, you tip your cap.
- 51:25Speaker 2: All right, people. That's all we got. Kratat's on the
- 51:28Speaker 2: way out.
- 51:32Speaker 4: Going with the O's. The O's. We had Molesky on,
- 51:36Speaker 4: and you know what? This is a big weekend for them.
- 51:39Speaker 4: They have to kick it into gear. They can't be
- 51:42Speaker 4: the Scarlet Knights.
- 51:43Speaker 2: Of the American East. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 51:46Speaker 4: Whoa, whoa, whoa. They got to show up.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Dude, that was bad.
- 51:49Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 51:50Speaker 1: They got to UMass it. UMass it.
- 51:53Speaker 2: We're in trouble now.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 51:56Speaker 2: You know, my day was fine. That was bad. Excuse me.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Listen, Massachusetts got some good recruits coming in, man.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Give them credit. They're not.
- 52:06Speaker 1: You're hyping the UMass football team right now?
- 52:09Speaker 3: No, they just got a Virginia Tech quarterback. They got
- 52:11Speaker 3: three different linemen. Listen, you can recruit now, guys.
- 52:16Speaker 2: It is what it is. I'm giving you one more chance.
- 52:19Speaker 1: If they play Miami, they lose 58-3.
- 52:20Speaker 2: But, okay.
- 52:21Speaker 1: And, hey, I'm the second biggest.
- 52:23Speaker 2: I don't agree with that at all.
- 52:25Speaker 1: All right, maybe 58-6. Maybe two field goals.
- 52:28Speaker 2: No, they put up 21 points.
- 52:29Speaker 3: 58-20.
