- 0:16To love letters. Welcome to Love Letters from
- 1:04God. We're going to change things a
- 1:07little bit here today. We've been reading from Psalms
- 1:11quite a little bit, and we are going to read a couple of Psalms
- 1:15today, but we're going to start out in the book of Genesis, way
- 1:20back in the very beginning of the Bible.
- 1:23And this is the last chapter in the book of Genesis, Genesis
- 1:28chapter 50. Then Joseph fell on his father's
- 1:35face, and he wept over him and kissed him.
- 1:42And Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to
- 1:47embalm his father. His father had just died.
- 1:52So the fissions embalmed Israel, 40 days were required for him,
- 1:58for such are the days required for those who are embalmed.
- 2:04And the Egyptians mourn for him for 70 days.
- 2:10Now when the days of his mourning were passed, Joseph
- 2:15spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have
- 2:21found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh,
- 2:28saying, My father made me swear, saying, Behold, I am dying in my
- 2:35grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, and there
- 2:41you shall bury me. Now therefore, please let me go
- 2:48up and bury my father, and I will come back.
- 2:53And Pharaoh said, Go up and bury your father, as he made you
- 2:58swear. So Joseph went up to bury his
- 3:02father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the
- 3:08elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, as
- 3:14well as all the House of Joseph, his brother's and his father's
- 3:19house. Only the little ones and their
- 3:22flocks and their herds they left in the land of Goshen.
- 3:28And there went up with him both Chariots and horsemen, and it
- 3:33was very great gathering. And then they came to the
- 3:39threshing floor of A Tad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they
- 3:46mourned there with great and very solemn lamentations.
- 3:52He observed 7 days of mourning for his father.
- 3:57And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the
- 4:01mourning at the threshing floor of A Tad, they said This is a
- 4:07deep mourning of the Egyptians. Therefore its name was called
- 4:12Abel Miserium, which is beyond the Jordan.
- 4:18So his sons did for him, just as he commanded them.
- 4:22For his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, buried him in
- 4:28The Cave of the field of Machpelah before Mabry, which
- 4:33Abraham bought with the field from Ephraim, the high tide, his
- 4:39property for a burial place. And after he had buried his
- 4:44father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and
- 4:50all who went up with him to bury his father.
- 4:55And when Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they
- 5:01said, Perhaps Joseph will hate us and may actually repay us for
- 5:08all the evil which we did to him.
- 5:13So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, Before your
- 5:18father died, he commanded, saying, Thus shall you say to
- 5:22Joseph, I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your
- 5:28brothers and their sin, for they did evil to you.
- 5:34Now please forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of
- 5:40your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke
- 5:45to him. Then his brothers also went and
- 5:49fell down before his face. And and they said, Behold, we
- 5:54are your servants. And Joseph said to them, Do not
- 5:59be afraid, for I am in the place of God.
- 6:04But As for you, you meant evil against me, but God has meant it
- 6:11for good in order to bring it about as it is this day to save
- 6:18many people alive now. Therefore do not be afraid, I
- 6:24will provide for you and your little ones.
- 6:28And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
- 6:34So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's household, and
- 6:39Joseph lived 110 years. Joseph saw Ephraim's children to
- 6:46the third generation. The children of Makar, the son
- 6:51of Manasseh were also brought up on Joseph's knees.
- 6:57And Joseph said to his brethren, I am dying, but God will surely
- 7:02visit you and bring you out of this land, to the land of which
- 7:07he swore to Abraham, and to Isaac and to Jacob.
- 7:12And then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel,
- 7:16saying, God will surely visit you, and you should carry up my
- 7:22bones from here. So Joseph died being 110 years
- 7:29old, and they embalmed him and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
- 7:43We need to think about, you know, his brothers had dumped
- 7:49him in a hole in the ground, sold him as a slave and trying
- 7:53to get him out of their hair and and he wound up being second in
- 7:59command of all of Egypt. And they tried to tell their dad
- 8:05that so the animals had killed him and so on.
- 8:09But but Joseph is telling them here now because they're afraid.
- 8:17They're afraid now that their dad's dead and buried that he's
- 8:22going to come back on them. But if you would note in verse
- 8:2520 that we just read, Joseph says you intended to arm me, but
- 8:32God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position
- 8:41so I could save the lives of many people.
- 8:47You see, when he got to be second in command over all of
- 8:51Egypt, he helped people through the famine to keep from starving
- 8:57to death. Think for a minute about
- 9:00yourself. Have you ever suffered?
- 9:03Are you suffering now? You know, everyone goes through
- 9:10personal episodes of suffering and it's up to us to discover
- 9:16the meaning in all of that suffering.
- 9:23Yet there are stories in the Bible and which we hear how
- 9:27believers found meaning and suffering, and this is one of
- 9:31them. The story of Joseph is one that
- 9:35his brothers felt that their father had a favorite son and
- 9:39they also felt that he was a bit arrogant, so they decided to get
- 9:46rid of him because they have their own hatred and evil
- 9:51thoughts. Yet when he looks back at what
- 9:56happened, he finds meaning in all of it.
- 10:02If Joseph were bitter and focused on his brother's
- 10:08wickedness, their evil thoughts and actions, he probably would
- 10:14not have been able to see what God was doing.
- 10:19But knowing the Lord, he sees that God used the wickedness of
- 10:25his brothers to accomplish his own purpose.
- 10:31And that's why Joseph says that God managed the process, not his
- 10:37brothers. God was able to get right what
- 10:43no human could. He reversed the process of
- 10:49wickedness and he saved an entire nation.
- 10:54And maybe this story, the story of Joseph will help you to
- 10:58remember too, that good can come from evil by the grace of God.
- 11:07And along with that, got a couple of Psalms here that kind
- 11:14of bring out the the same story. So let's let's turn over and
- 11:22look at Psalm 72. Give the King your judgments, O
- 11:39God, and your righteousness to the King's Son.
- 11:46He will judge your people with righteousness and your poor with
- 11:52justice. The mountains will bring peace
- 11:55to the people, and the little hills by righteousness.
- 12:01He will bring justice to the poor of the people.
- 12:06He will Save the Children of the needy and will break in pieces
- 12:12of the oppressor. They shall fear you as long as
- 12:17the sun and the moon endure throughout all generations.
- 12:22He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing
- 12:29like showers that water the earth.
- 12:32In his days the righteous shall flourish an abundance of peace
- 12:39until the moon is no more. He shall have dominion also,
- 12:44from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth.
- 12:51Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before him,
- 12:56and his enemies will lick the dust.
- 13:00The kings of Tarsus and of the Isles will bring presents.
- 13:05The kings of Sheba and Siba will offer gifts.
- 13:09Yes, all the kings shall fall down before him, and nations
- 13:14shall serve him, for he will deliver the needy when he cries,
- 13:20the poor also, and him who has no helper.
- 13:25He will spare the poor and the needy, and he will save the
- 13:29souls of the needy. He will redeem their life from
- 13:34oppression and violence, and precious shall be their blood in
- 13:39his sight, and he shall live, and the gold of Sheba will be
- 13:44given to him. Prayer also will be made for
- 13:48him. Continually and daily shall he
- 13:51be praised. There will be an abundance of
- 13:54grain in the earth on the top of the mountains.
- 13:59His fruits shall wave like Lebanon, and those of the city
- 14:04shall flourish like grass of the earth.
- 14:08His name shall endure forever. His name shall continue as King
- 14:14as long as the sun and men be blessed in him.
- 14:19All nations shall call him blessed.
- 14:23Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel who only does wondrous
- 14:29things, and blessed be his glorious name forever, and let
- 14:35the whole earth be filled with his glory.
- 14:39Amen and Amen. And the prayers of David, the
- 14:44son of Jesse are ended. That was the end of the prayers
- 14:50of David. King Solomon, David's son, is
- 14:56supposed to have written this particular Psalm.
- 15:00And although Psalm Solomon is famous for his collection of
- 15:07sayings in the book of Proverbs, he also was a writer of some of
- 15:13the Psalms and, and this is is one of them.
- 15:18In the very first verse of this Psalm, he asked for God's
- 15:23judgments and righteousness. He wanted wisdom in order to
- 15:28govern the people of Israel wisely and justly.
- 15:34And this is the very request that Solomon made when when God
- 15:39spoke to him and dream and invited him to ask for anything
- 15:44he desired. Solomon chose wisdom and God was
- 15:49pleased with the King's request for that wisdom.
- 15:54And all through this Psalm that we just read, Solomon relates
- 16:00God's care for the land and rainfall and sunshine and
- 16:07abundant grain and, and all the care he has for his people.
- 16:12He says the mountains will bring peace to the people.
- 16:16The righteous should flourish. There should be abundance of
- 16:20peace. All of these things God will
- 16:24provide to His people. But the psalmist also stated
- 16:30that these things would come by righteousness.
- 16:35You see, God is generous, providing what we need so that
- 16:41we can enjoy the peace that He wants us to have.
- 16:47For this generosity presupposes righteous living.
- 16:53One more short Psalm that we want to read here, and that's
- 16:58Psalm #93 It's a pretty short Psalm, and we'll just end with
- 17:07that one here. Today, Psalm 93, the Lord
- 17:13reigns. He is clothed with majesty.
- 17:18The Lord is clothed. He has girded himself with
- 17:22strength. Surely the world is established
- 17:26so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from
- 17:31old, You are from everlasting. The floods has lifted us up, O
- 17:38Lord. The floods have lifted up their
- 17:41voice, the floods lift up their waves, and the Lord on high is
- 17:47mightier, and the noise of many waters and the mighty waves of
- 17:52the sea. Your testimonies are very sure.
- 17:57Holiness adorns your house, oh Lord, forever.
- 18:03And we're going to stop there and let's have a prayer.
- 18:07Our Father in heaven, sometimes when we are having a hard time,
- 18:13we wonder why we wonder about. And help us to understand these
- 18:24issues. And you can take these problems
- 18:28and you can turn them into joys, great things, peace and
- 18:34happiness. Help us to understand that.
- 18:38And as we read from your love letters, find that you tell us
- 18:43that all the time. We're thankful for that.
- 18:47And we pray that in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
- 18:51And that's it for the day. Hi, I'm Beaker with Military
