- 0:22cats Daily starts your day fun. Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where
- 0:28we bring news, trivia, fun facts, and more just for curious
- 0:32kids like you. Today we're going on an
- 0:35adventure, not up a mountain, but into the life of someone who
- 0:38climbs mountains for real. Alex Honnold.
- 0:41Get ready to learn about a real life Spider man, except he
- 0:45doesn't wear a costume or swing from webs.
- 0:48He uses his hands, feet, and a whole lot of courage.
- 0:52So who is Alex Honnold? Imagine standing at the bottom
- 0:55of a super tall wall, maybe even taller than your school
- 0:59building, and deciding to climb all the way to the top using
- 1:02just your hands and feet. No ropes, no safety Nets, just
- 1:06you and the rock. That's what Alex Honnold does.
- 1:10He's a professional rock climber, and he's most famous
- 1:13for something called free solo climbing.
- 1:16But don't worry, we'll explain what that means in a way that
- 1:19makes sense. Let's start with climbing
- 1:21basics. Have you ever climbed a tree or
- 1:24a jungle gym? You probably used your hands and
- 1:27feet to pull yourself up, right? Now imagine if that jungle gym
- 1:31was made of rock and stretched hundreds of feet into the sky.
- 1:34That's what rock climbers do. Usually, climbers wear special
- 1:38gear like harnesses, ropes, and helmets to keep them safe.
- 1:42But Alex Honnold sometimes climbs without any of that
- 1:45safety gear. This is called free solo
- 1:48climbing. It's like doing the monkey bars,
- 1:51but if you slip, there's no soft ground or parent to catch you.
- 1:55That's why free solo climbing is super dangerous and takes years
- 1:58of practice, focus, and skill. Now let's talk about why Alex
- 2:03Honnold is so famous. One of the things that made him
- 2:06a superstar in the climbing world was when he climbed a
- 2:09giant Rockwall called El Capitan, which is in Yosemite
- 2:12National Park in California. El Capitan is as tall as three
- 2:17Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other.
- 2:19That's almost 3000 feet high, about as tall as 200 giraffes
- 2:24standing in a line, nose to tail.
- 2:27People had climbed El Capitan before, but always with ropes
- 2:30and safety gear. In 2017, Alex became the first
- 2:34person ever to climb it all by himself with no ropes, in a
- 2:38style called Free Solo. It was so amazing and scary that
- 2:43people made a movie about it called Free Solo, which even won
- 2:46an Oscar. Let's pause for a Dijuno moment.
- 2:50Did you know that while climbing El Capitan, Alex used tiny
- 2:53cracks and bumps in the rock, some no bigger than the width of
- 2:57a pencil, to hold on and keep moving up?
- 2:59Imagine balancing on the edge of a ruler with just your toes, or
- 3:03gripping a Pebble with your fingertips.
- 3:06That's the kind of strength and focus Alex needed for hours as
- 3:09he climbed. But how did Alex become such a
- 3:12super climber? Well, he started climbing when
- 3:15he was just a kid about your age.
- 3:18He grew up in California and loved climbing anything he
- 3:21could, walls, door frames, playgrounds.
- 3:24When he was 5, his dad took him to a climbing gym, which is like
- 3:27a playground with walls you can climb indoors.
- 3:30Alex loved it so much that he kept practicing, getting
- 3:33stronger and braver every year. Just like practicing for a
- 3:37sport, playing an instrument, or getting better at a video game,
- 3:41Alex climbed almost every day to improve his skills.
- 3:45Now you might be wondering, is Alex Honnold afraid when he
- 3:48climbs? That's a great question.
- 3:51Everybody feels scared sometimes, even the bravest
- 3:55people. Alex says he does feel fear, but
- 3:58he prepares so much before each climb that he feels confident
- 4:01and ready before a big climb. He studies the wall, memorizes
- 4:06every move, and even practices with ropes first.
- 4:09It's like rehearsing a dance routine until you know every
- 4:13step by heart. By the time he climbs without
- 4:15ropes, he's practiced so much that he can do it smoothly,
- 4:18almost like a choreographed dance.
- 4:21Here's another Did you know moment.
- 4:23Did you know that scientists actually studied Alex's brain to
- 4:26see how he handles fear? They found that his brain
- 4:29doesn't get as scared as most people's do in dangerous
- 4:32situations. But it's not because he was born
- 4:35fearless. It's because he's practiced and
- 4:37trained his mind to stay calm. Just like a Jedi, Alex Honnold
- 4:41is also known for being super focused when he's climbing.
- 4:45He pays attention to every detail where he puts his
- 4:47fingers, how he shifts his weight, even how he breathes.
- 4:51It's like being in a video game where you have to make the right
- 4:54move every time. One wrong step and the game
- 4:57could be over, but Alex stays calm and keeps moving up, one
- 5:01careful step at a time. Let's talk about what Alex wears
- 5:05and uses when he climbs. Since he doesn't use ropes while
- 5:08free soloing, he tries to keep things simple.
- 5:11He wears special climbing shoes that are really tight and help
- 5:15him grip tiny edges in the rock. He also has a chalk bag, which
- 5:19is like a little pouch he wears around his waist.
- 5:21The chalk keeps his hands dry so he doesn't slip.
- 5:25And that's pretty much it. No fancy gadgets or superhero
- 5:29gear, just shoes, chalk, and his own strength and skill.
- 5:33Now you might be thinking, why would someone want to climb
- 5:36without ropes? Isn't it super dangerous?
- 5:39You're right, it is dangerous, and it's not something most
- 5:42people should ever try. Alex says he climbs this way
- 5:45because it makes him feel alive and focused, and he loves the
- 5:49challenge. It's like solving the world's
- 5:51hardest puzzle using your whole body and mind.
- 5:55But even Alex says that safety is really important, and he only
- 5:59frees solos after years of practice and preparation.
- 6:02Alex doesn't just climb for himself, though.
- 6:05He also cares a lot about the planet.
- 6:07He started something called the Honnold Foundation, which helps
- 6:10bring solar power to communities that don't have electricity.
- 6:14He wants to help people and protect nature, especially the
- 6:17beautiful places where he climbs.
- 6:19So he's not just a climber, he's also a helper and a hero for the
- 6:24environment. Here's another fun fact.
- 6:27Alex Honnold is famous for living in a van.
- 6:30That's right, he turned a van into his home so he could travel
- 6:34to different climbing spots and live simply.
- 6:37His van has a bed, a little kitchen, and space for his
- 6:40climbing gear. It's like a mini house on
- 6:43wheels. Alex says he likes living this
- 6:45way because it keeps life simple and lets him focus on what he
- 6:48loves most, climbing and exploring new places.
- 6:52If you're wondering what Alex does when he's not climbing, he
- 6:55likes reading, spending time with friends and family, and
- 6:58camping outdoors. He's also traveled to places all
- 7:01over the world to climb, like Morocco, Patagonia, and even
- 7:05Antarctica. Everywhere he goes, he tries to
- 7:08learn about the people and the environment.
- 7:11Now let's do a quick recap of what we've learned today about
- 7:14Alex Arnold 1st. Alex is a professional rock
- 7:17climber who's famous for free solo climbing, climbing super
- 7:21tall walls with no ropes or safety gear.
- 7:24He became world famous when he climbed El Capitan in Yosemite
- 7:28National Park, which is as tall as three Eiffel Towers.
- 7:32Alex started climbing as a kid and practice for years to get
- 7:35really good. He prepares for every climb by
- 7:38studying the wall and practicing his moves, almost like learning
- 7:42a dance. Scientists found that Alexis
- 7:44Brain stays calm in scary situations because he's trained
- 7:48himself to focus and stay relaxed.
- 7:50He lives simply in a van, travels the world, and helps the
- 7:54planet through his foundation. Most importantly, Alex teaches
- 7:58us that with practice, focus, and preparation, you can do
- 8:02amazing things. He also reminds us to be safe,
- 8:06take care of our planet, and always try our best, whether
- 8:09we're climbing a mountain, learning something new, or
- 8:12helping others. That's all for today's Kick Cast
- 8:15Daily Adventure. Thanks for listening and
- 8:18exploring the world of Alex Honnell with us.
- 8:21Remember, you don't have to climb mountains to do something
- 8:24amazing. You can do it by being curious,
- 8:26kind, and brave every day. Until next time, keep reaching
- 8:31for new heights. Grab.
