- 0:20Hey, everyone, welcome to bless this mess up in True Grund podcast.
- 0:23I don't care here us do say Heystu, Hey, all right, so
- 0:26we're back this week. This is three weeks in a row. Everyone should
- 0:28be pretty impressed. We have three children, so one week for each each
- 0:33child. But anyways, we have we have had an uptick in our patrons
- 0:39and we really appreciate that. We've had a lot of people sign on and
- 0:42so we really appreciate you guys doing that. Like I said, we are.
- 0:45I have an ideal for some content for the Patreon that I've been trying
- 0:49to work in time to for us to record that. So that's something that
- 0:53we've got on the schedule to do. But it is the schedule. Student,
- 0:58You're not in charge of this schedule, so you don't know. I
- 1:00have the schedule all over my head. We have a lot We got a
- 1:03lot of balls in the air and none of them are stews, Okay,
- 1:08none of us. So we got a lot of balls in the air.
- 1:12We got like T ball that I was signed up for, which if anybody
- 1:15would like to know, she did fully I told you that she or did
- 1:19we talk about this? Do we talk about our t ball game. Oh
- 1:23no, we hadn't gone to T ball yet. The game we gone to
- 1:26the practice. We went to the T ball game, and so I bought
- 1:29a little te ball like all this stuff for her to practice in the backyard.
- 1:33And she's like hitting the ball like real hard and everything's great and everything.
- 1:36That's so proud of ourself. She gets out there to actually bat and
- 1:40like completely shuts down. And she was the only child that actually shut down,
- 1:47Like she just stood there as we're trying to get her to hit the
- 1:49ball and everything. She wouldn't hit it either time because they went up to
- 1:52bat twice, but we did. Stu went out there and she did actually
- 1:56run the bases, So I thought that was a We'll take that as a
- 1:59win that she actually ran the bases. But anyways, we got a lot
- 2:02going on, so we have T ball. We took them for family photos
- 2:07today, just them, not medi and stew and for like a little easter
- 2:12photos. Are you not involved in this, sew? I am, You're
- 2:15just looking at me. You're just bouncing all over something. Well, I'm
- 2:20just telling I'm just telling them what we got going on. Okay, While
- 2:22I was unloading some boxes in the garage takes on a dryer or we're not
- 2:25talking about this stuff. No, that's boring. Okay, we took it
- 2:30into family photos. But of course last night the so, the our daughter
- 2:36and the our son, the so, the three year old and the like
- 2:39the one and a half year old. They share a room at night.
- 2:44Well they act up and everything in there and they let chit chat. But
- 2:47last night they decided to because we had family photos today, they decided to
- 2:52take their little Tony box. If anybody knows what that is. It's a
- 2:53little box where you can put like characters on and it sings or whatever.
- 2:59And so they're throwing it back and forth. Well, we didn't know this
- 3:00was going on because normally they just listened to the story or whatever and it's
- 3:04it's all good. Well, last night they decided that they were gonna pick
- 3:07it up. So he's in a crib and she's in a toddler bed.
- 3:08So she's thrown it back to him. He's thrown he's pushing it over the
- 3:12side back to her. Oh, all of a sudden, we hear screaming.
- 3:15We didn't know anything was going on. We just heard him laughing in
- 3:19there, which they laugh all the time, they'll like mess you know,
- 3:22joke around and stuff like that. We hear screaming, well, we have
- 3:23cameras in there. So we run in and Stu picks him up, and
- 3:28I come down the hall. I'm like, oh my god. I'm like,
- 3:29he has a black eye. And so he has a full on black
- 3:32eye. We're going to have photos taken today. Anyways, and so we
- 3:38replayed the camera and they were throwing this box back and forth, and then
- 3:42the last time she goes she picks up. She's like ha ha a and
- 3:46she throws right at his face. Now, I think she knew what she
- 3:50was doing, but we'll give her the benefit of the doubt that they were
- 3:53just playing and an accident happened, but that was an ordeal, So hopefully
- 3:58the lady can like, uh, digitally altered. Yeah, but they did
- 4:03do really well with the photos. I felt like, especially with three,
- 4:05like she got all three of them in a photo together and everything that.
- 4:10So she said that he ran into a door. So yeah, anyways,
- 4:16So yeah, so that was our day today, was dealing with that.
- 4:20And then they did have t ball practice tonight, but I said, I'm
- 4:23not going to that. So because we're practicing for a game. They don't
- 4:26even keep scored. They don't do anything. They just show up and yeah,
- 4:30you just show up and they run around like like the little kids.
- 4:33Anyways, we're gonna pause because the baby's crying, so we'll be right back.
- 4:38All right, we're back. She ate. You can't tell, but
- 4:42it's actually been about forty five minutes out there. She ate and she's she's
- 4:47back to sleep, so she's all good. Anyways, moral of the story
- 4:51from the first however long, was we've been busy, but it is on
- 4:56the schedules too. I was trying to get you to record this this last
- 4:59weekend. I was like, oh, we need to watch one and record
- 5:02and everything like that. Yeah, it was like pie, Yeah, you're
- 5:05just throwing it out there. Yeah, I just throw it out there.
- 5:08You didn't say like we need to do that, like, oh, let's
- 5:10have a third baby. You're like, yeah, sure, let's fine.
- 5:12You know, just throw it out there and see what happens. You know,
- 5:15Well that was your fault. So anyways, but yeah, thanks for
- 5:17Patreon. If anybody else will liked to support, uh just general support,
- 5:23sign up at patreon dot com. Slash bless It's mess podcast buy me at
- 5:27coffee dot com. We've had some people that's a one off donation. I
- 5:31did get a coffee today. I tried the new Starbucks Oat Milk lavender coffee,
- 5:35which was seemed I wasn't too sure about the lavender, but actually it
- 5:40was really good. And then fall us on Instagram, Facebook. I've been
- 5:46doing a lot of reading here lately. Stu took me to the library today
- 5:49to get my library card at our New Town because I think he saw all
- 5:53the books I ordered that came in. Actually, I went to the library
- 5:57to get the tax forms the instruction booklet, so I didn't have to print
- 6:01that out. Okay, well yeah, but you were like, happened when
- 6:06when? Yes? Because he's like, what do you keep ordering? And
- 6:10there's like books coming in from from everywhere. But yeah, so I read
- 6:14The Four Winds the other day. That was a recommendation. I'm reading none
- 6:19of this is true by uh the kid's Lisa Jewel maybe anyway, So yeah,
- 6:26I got I got the I got the books going. So yeah,
- 6:28I'm posting on on that. So if you want to check that out.
- 6:30We'll be having a new book Club pick come April first. So all right,
- 6:34So without further ado, let's get into this week's case out of South
- 6:41Carolina. All right, So Gwendolyn Elaine Fogel, she goes by. Elaine
- 6:46was born December fifteenth, nineteen fifty one, in Orangeburg, South Carolina,
- 6:50to Wells and Murdisfogel. Wells and Murdis. Those are some names, you
- 6:56know, the old names. They think that some like the names today are
- 7:00weird and stuff like that, but they had some weird names back then too.
- 7:03They had did some weird ones. Elaine's family experienced lost early on.
- 7:09Murdis and Wells would lose two infant infant daughters that looked like they lost them
- 7:13right after they were after they were born, they would didn't even make it
- 7:15to a year. And then they had Elaine and for sure one other daughter
- 7:20now they Elaine was described as kind and compassionate. She loved being around children
- 7:26and even taught Sunday school at her church. Now Elaine ended up moving to
- 7:29a home in Walterboro, South Carolina with a room roommate. She was working
- 7:33at a doctor's office as a medical Assistant's assistants assistants, no medical assistant typed
- 7:41assistants. You're just reading what's on the paper. Yes, I am Stuart,
- 7:45that's what. Why do you think I write these like Ron Burgundy?
- 7:48You put it in the prompter and she'll read it. Go fuck yourself,
- 7:51san Diego, go fuck yourself. Stop Medical assistant in the lab and enjoying
- 7:57her life. On May nineteen seventy eight, at about one forty five in
- 8:03the morning, Elaine's roommate was being dropped off by a friend. When they
- 8:07approached the door, they immediately noticed that the front light the room light was
- 8:11on, which struck them as odd since it was so late and they figured
- 8:16Elaine would be asleep. They unlocked the front door, and as soon as
- 8:18they walked in, they see twenty six year old Elaine. She's lying on
- 8:22the floor on her stomach and she appears to be lifeless. There was blood
- 8:28everywhere and Elaine was naked from the waist down. They left their house and
- 8:33they went and called police from another location. Police arrived at the house on
- 8:37South Lemck Street, and they could immediately see that Elaine had struggled pretty mightily
- 8:43during the title. Yeah, yes, there was a mighty struggle, a
- 8:48mighty struggle, as you might say, I will say so Stu did ask
- 8:52me. I wrote nine one one in the paper and she was like,
- 8:56was nine on one even the thing? And I'm pretty sure they said one
- 9:00on the show I watched. But so he's like, I'm just gonna say
- 9:03police. So, just for a fun fact for everybody, the first nine
- 9:07to one one call was made in nineteen sixty eight and it was by the
- 9:13Alabama Telephone Company and they're the ones that decided to implement it, which is
- 9:18the last time Alabama was on the forefront of anything. Am I right?
- 9:22What? No? I got talidagon? Okay, Yeah, so they're not
- 9:26really cutting edge over there, and started driving NASCAR and that's why I raced,
- 9:30was Alabama. Hmm. Anyway, so it wasn't until in like nineteen
- 9:33seventy nine there was only twenty six percent of the United States was using nine
- 9:37one, so they may or may not have been using nine on one.
- 9:41But you interrupted me for this, Yeah, I did. People not that
- 9:45that's like a fun fact, Stude. Everybody loves a fun fact, except
- 9:50for you. I guess I'm trying to We're trying to educate people as well,
- 9:56Stewart, this is an educational podcast. Yes, that's what you're going
- 10:01is a moral So we're going to go with educational nonprofit. So money is
- 10:07we don't have to pay taxes. Yes, that's correct. I'd like we're
- 10:13doing the Lord's work right now. We are. Anyway, continuing on,
- 10:18she fought mightily. I did not write that, guys, Okay, that
- 10:22did not I did not type that out. You know, you just wrote
- 10:24that she had struggled. Yeah, okay, she struggled, but it looked
- 10:30like she had fought pretty hard during this assault. Anyway, it was clear
- 10:35to the police on scene that she had been sexually assaulted. They found her
- 10:39underwear lying on the couch, and they also discovered that the point of entry
- 10:43was a window in the back of the house. It was one of those
- 10:48windows that has multiple pains in it, and it one of the pains had
- 10:52been knocked out, like somebody reached in unlocked the window and they gained entry
- 10:56that way. The home was in disarray. A table was overturned in the
- 11:00front room, there was items thrown everywhere, There's broken glass all over the
- 11:05floor, and it was clear that Elaine had pretty fought pretty hard for her
- 11:09life, or as one might say, mightily. Despite the appearance there were
- 11:15no items of value taken from the home. The only thing missing was a
- 11:18set of keys of Elane's. The crime scene was dusted for prints, and
- 11:22they were also able to obtain a semen sample from the autopsy. When they
- 11:26dusted four prints, two distinct fingerprints were discovered on the window and on the
- 11:33table that was overton turned, and there was also a palm print a partial
- 11:37pom print. They did find the murder weapon at the scene, and it
- 11:41was a steel fire poker that somehow this person was able to actually bend and
- 11:48wrap around Elane's neck. Because the autopsy would later confirm that Elaine had died
- 11:54from strangulation after being raped and beaten severely with that fire poker, then that
- 12:00person took it and actually bent it around her neck to strangler. Yeah,
- 12:05died from strangulation, Yes, I did. Okay, just saying anyway,
- 12:09so it was clear that the person had some mytelee strength. You're just gonna
- 12:16make fun of me for the rest of the time. Yeah, wow,
- 12:18did you bring your the saurus? I might have you like that Friend's episode
- 12:24where Joey didn't never I know your psycho. The Friend's episode where Joey was
- 12:31trying to write a letter to the adoption agency as to why Monica and Chandler
- 12:35should get a baby, and so he was trying to sound smart, so
- 12:39he used the saurus and he signed it because his name is Joey. He
- 12:43signed it baby kangaroo because he was using the saurus for other words. Anyways,
- 12:52that was not funny at all. You're an idiot, you have.
- 12:56You don't understand funny because you don't like friends, and that makes you mightily
- 13:01dumb. Anyways, I don't hate it. I just you don't like it,
- 13:07and I think that there's something innately wrong. Well, you had seven
- 13:11years to figure that out. Okay, Well now we're I'm in too deep.
- 13:16I'm three kids deep into this and I can't get out. Help me,
- 13:20all right. So police began to interview friends and family to track Elaine's
- 13:24activities that evening leading up to her death. They found out that she had
- 13:28babysit that night, and she'd left that job around eleven fifteen. Now,
- 13:33the home where she was babysitting was about fifteen minutes from her house, so
- 13:35they could assume she got home around eleven thirty. They believe she entered the
- 13:41home turned on that front room light, and as she walked through the house,
- 13:45she came upon her killer, who was already in the home. She
- 13:48ran for the front door when she was then attacked and then a struggle ensued.
- 13:54When speaking to family members, the only thing they could think of was
- 13:56Elaine had mentioned that she was concerned about someone trying to still drugs from the
- 14:01doctor's office where she worked. Now, with this information, they start to
- 14:05believe maybe the killer broken to still Lane's keys to gain access to the doctor's
- 14:09office. Now they contact that doctor's office, but they never had anything like
- 14:15noted of any medications missing or anybody coming into the facility that they knew of
- 14:20it, Like, yeah, there was no bra in attempted, no matter.
- 14:24Well, they would be breaking in if they had keys, but I
- 14:28don't know if she had. She probably had keys. I doubt she had
- 14:31keys to the whole medical facility. She probably just had key because she was
- 14:35a lab assistant, so she probably just had keys to that area. I
- 14:39doubt she had keys to the whole place, you know. Yeah, it's
- 14:43sort of been a break in at some point to get to anyways. But
- 14:46so they stopped looking at me like that, So they continued, So this
- 14:52was just something that she had mentioned to friends and family. It's the only
- 14:54thing they have to go off of. They they monitor that doctor's office.
- 14:58They tell them to keep an eye out for an anything that might have go
- 15:01up missing or any strange activity, and nothing comes from it. For weeks
- 15:05that the doctor's office never has anything happen, So then they're able to rule
- 15:09that out as part of the motive. They don't know why they took Elaine's
- 15:13keys, but it wasn't to get access to that doctor's office. Without much
- 15:18to go on, police turned to the community looking for any tips. They
- 15:22did receive one what they thought was credible tip about a career criminal that lived
- 15:30in the neighborhood because he had the uh the physical strength they thought to bend
- 15:35a fire poker. Now supposedly his wife and he was a career criminal,
- 15:41was the main thing. Start. Well, if he was an eighty pound
- 15:43career criminal that was forging checks, we don't know what people are capable of,
- 15:48okay, anyway, so his wife had mentioned, so I know what
- 15:54you're capable of. Now. His wife had a mentioned to a friend that
- 16:00this suspect had come home late the night. Elaine was murdered. He had
- 16:04scratched that's what the friend is saying. The friend. The friend is the
- 16:07one who came forward to police as the tipster and said a the wife told
- 16:14her one that he had came home with these scratches and this blood on him,
- 16:18and it came home late. So they're getting the tip. I haven't
- 16:22gone to that, partners, So anyway, finish ups too. I'll try
- 16:30Now. He had scratches on his face and chested and had blood on him,
- 16:36according to the informant. I guess we'll call her. She the wife
- 16:41supposedly told her that it looked like he had been in a fight. So
- 16:45police bring him in and he claimed that he had nothing to do with the
- 16:48murder. Now this is some time after the murder, so the if he
- 16:53did have any scratches, they wouldn't have been present. Yeah, they would
- 16:59have been held up by then, because this was a little bit of time
- 17:02that they got the word out to the community and then they started, you
- 17:06know, getting these tips that came in to be able to trace this back
- 17:10and see if this is a legitimate claim or not. Yeah, So after
- 17:14however long it took for this to happen, his wounds would have been healed
- 17:18up had he gotten any to begin with. Now, he claims he was
- 17:22at home with his wife that night and they take fingerprints and the police are
- 17:26not able to match his fingerprints to the ones found at the crime scene.
- 17:30Since they had no evidence connecting him to the crime scene, they had to
- 17:33let him go. He did end up leaving town, but police were solely
- 17:37focused on him as the murderer, but they were never able to find anything
- 17:41that did connect him. They kind of had tunnel vision on him. They
- 17:45were like, this guy's a career criminal. He was in the neighborhood,
- 17:48he's a larger way. We have somebody saying that he was had blood all
- 17:52over him that night, like this is our guy. And then now he's
- 17:55suspicious because he left town and everything. But they have absolutely no evidence on
- 17:59it. And I think he did take a polygraph test, not that that
- 18:02means anything, but he did pass it. But they really focused in on
- 18:06him, and I think it took up a lot of the resources whenever they
- 18:08should have possibly moved back to Yeah, after years of no progress, the
- 18:15case went cold. It wasn't until May of twenty fifteen, when a new
- 18:18detective was put on the case that new light would be shed on the evidence.
- 18:23Now, the detective worked through the original list of suspects, ruling out
- 18:26all of them, including the one that they spent the most time on.
- 18:30The neighbor with that criminal passed. Now, the detective tracked down the wife
- 18:33of the neighbor and she actually, you know that got the queer criminal.
- 18:37His wife She confirmed that he had been home that night and that she had
- 18:42never told this coworker friend of hers that he had had come home with blood
- 18:48and stuff on him. So this, I don't know if this you know
- 18:51what I think maybe there was like a love triangle, like the coworker slash
- 18:56friend was sleeping with the husband and he's like, I can't leave my wife.
- 19:02I'm a career criminal. She supports me in my career aspects. You
- 19:06want me to like, you know, live a straight life and everything that
- 19:08and I can't do that. So yes, So then she got real upset
- 19:14about this, and she's been waiting, she's been planning. Yeah, she's
- 19:18been gone girl, and this shit she's been trying to like long long con
- 19:22like when can I stick it to this guy? And then she's like,
- 19:25finally someone got murdered in his neighborhood. I'm gonna turn him into the police,
- 19:29but I gotta do it in a sideway. I gotta, I gotta.
- 19:32She's she's like, uh, Lisa vander Pump whenever, whenever, she
- 19:37said, Oh, she's a sniper from the side. So so the coworker
- 19:42was like, I'm a sniper from the side. She's trying to take him
- 19:45out from that angle because she's a lover spurned. Remember that episode. Yeah,
- 19:49yep, that's a That's exactly what happened. So they so then they're
- 19:56like, Okay, well, this guy didn't do it. There's nothing,
- 19:59there was no evidence. Back now the wife's denying that she even said it,
- 20:02so let's move on from him. They also ran down a lead from
- 20:07a jailhouse informant from back in the nineteen eighties. Now, some inmates told
- 20:11police that two men were bragging about killing Lane with the fire poker, which
- 20:15is so weird that we've been watching a lot of lock Up and it's just
- 20:18so weird that people brag about you, yeah, like killing people. It's
- 20:23crazy. However, it was determined that the two men in question would not
- 20:26have been able to commit the murders, and that the information about the fire
- 20:30poker was actually just well known around the town of Walterborough. It's not a
- 20:33big town, Like this information is going to get out that she was strangled
- 20:37to death with the fire poker that was bit in half. Like this is
- 20:41uh trying to get some jail house cred. Yes. Now, while they're
- 20:45running down the tips that they had received, they had submitted the seamen sample
- 20:48that they had with the DNA to see if there was a profile in the
- 20:53coatis now. The problem with the profile that they were able to obtain is
- 20:59that it was a mix of a Liane's DNA and the killers. So this
- 21:02gave him a very low chance of getting a hit if any in the code
- 21:06system. But they ran the DNA profile anyway and they had zero luck.
- 21:11The detective continued interviewing anyone he could and obtaining DNA samples to run against the
- 21:18profile. He evidently he tried to run everyone's DNA that lived in Waterboro.
- 21:25This is a long time though, Like, what how does he think that?
- 21:27I mean, we're gonna mention it, but we're not going to mention
- 21:32it. There's some rough group, okay, So it was a rough crowd
- 21:36in Walterboro. It was a rough family. Okay, it was a lot
- 21:40of The cousin seemed to be with it, with it, and her husband,
- 21:45the main detective seemed to be with it. But the the sled lab
- 21:52lady was a little off. The sister was very off. The other sister
- 21:59was off, I think, or no, it wasn't his sister. There
- 22:00was another lady who she was off. So it was a It was a
- 22:06group, you know. It didn't seem like there was a lot of people
- 22:07to pick from in Walterborough to reproduce with. But wow, I guess we
- 22:14won't be getting any levet from walt Boro on this episode. But I'm just
- 22:18saying that the detective it was, it was like he was going around getting
- 22:22I mean, I guess the odds of them being in Walterborough could be there,
- 22:26but it just seemed like a small town. I don't think the person
- 22:29who did this would still be living there. It seemed low. You know,
- 22:33I think we need a branch out. I've seen plenty of them where
- 22:37the killer just went about his business living in town. I guess it's true
- 22:41anyways, but basically, he rean every sample of every person he could find
- 22:45in the town anybody that was willing to give up. He took it.
- 22:47He took it and ran it and it wasn't happening. Now they had one
- 22:51more piece of evidence they could run, and that was the fingerprints obtained at
- 22:56the scene. And this was so again this explained well. But this is
- 23:03why I'm saying that the sled lady that was the south or the State Law
- 23:08Enforcement Division, the lab lady that was retired that had worked this case,
- 23:15she all of a sudden was like, oh my god, we totally forgot
- 23:18we had fingerprints. It's like, did you forget about the fingerprints? That's
- 23:23the first thing I thought. It was like, run the DNA and run
- 23:26the fingerprints. And so for some reason, the fingerprints weren't in the This
- 23:32is why I'm saying that the lady didn't seem that with it. But anyways,
- 23:37it seemed like the group didn't seem like they were graduated first in their
- 23:42class. But anyways, no, so she realized they had the fingerprints,
- 23:48which I would have thought that they Yeah, not even the actual cards with
- 23:52I guess, not the cards with the fingerprints. I get, Well,
- 23:55however, you obtained the print from the well they dust them the tape transfer
- 24:00to whatever, but they didn't even have that. She was the photographer on
- 24:04the scene, I believe, yes, and they took pictures of it.
- 24:07Yeah, So she took pictures of the fingerprints and so apparently those weren't actually
- 24:12in the case file. She had them in some sort of file cabinet back
- 24:15at her office. But she's retired, so she had to call the current
- 24:19person that's in that lab and say, hey, I have these fingerprints in
- 24:23this the photos of these fingerprints in this file cabinet. Can you go get
- 24:27them and compare them to and run them in the system, the APHIS system
- 24:33or whatever. And so the guy goes and gets the fingerprint, the pictures
- 24:37of the fingerprints, runs him in the APHIS system, and that's when they
- 24:41actually get a hit. But it was just I know, but it was
- 24:45just like it's so silly because they're just like, oh. She was like,
- 24:48oh my god, we totally forgot we had those fingerprints over there.
- 24:51I'm like, what is wrong with you people? I'm I don't even know
- 24:53what I'm doing, and I'm like, haven't you watched an episode of Dateline?
- 24:59One would think anyway, So the name that came back. Was James
- 25:02Willie Butterfield. Now it sounds like a nice name, but he was not
- 25:06a nice man. It does not sound like it. Willy was a fifty
- 25:08nine year old man with an intimidating, intimidating presence. He was over six
- 25:14feet tall and weighed over two hundred and fifty pounds, meaning he would have
- 25:17had the strength to been that still poker. He would have mightily that poker,
- 25:23gonna mightily take it to you. His name was also familiar to this
- 25:27case. Willi had been a suspect back in nineteen seventy eight, but was
- 25:32officially dismissed as a suspect after several interviews with police. So they didn't really
- 25:37have anything to go on with him. I think he was just a one
- 25:40of the guys. Maybe he had some criminal activity. They talked to him,
- 25:44they let him. He was a large fellow. Yeah, it's just
- 25:45a big guy. They just let him go. Police do track down Willie,
- 25:51and he is He was at that time in a state facility for the
- 25:56criminally insane. Now they didn't call it a state facility for the criminal insane.
- 26:00I just put the criminally insane because and I'm Ron Burgundy. So I
- 26:03just read what's on the pro because I felt I find that just so much
- 26:07worse than just a state hospital. You know, it's criminal the criminally insane,
- 26:12because then you just think of Slayer. No. No, they got
- 26:18a tall song where they talk about the criminally insane. Okay, well,
- 26:22I don't speak your devil music that you listen to over there. No,
- 26:26I was thinking of serious black or in they're like the picture in the from
- 26:33He's from Azkaban and he's you know, Harry Potter. Oh of course.
- 26:40If they don't, then please exit to a stage left. Wow. Okay,
- 26:44if you don't like friends and Harry Potter and housewives, I mean,
- 26:47what are you even doing here. I don't know what I'm doing here.
- 26:49I don't know what you're doing here either. I've asked you to leave multiple
- 26:53times. You just refuse to leave. So now we have three children,
- 26:56I'll leave. Now that we have three children, I'm all about leaving.
- 27:02Oh no, I can't wait to go back to work. I'm kidding it.
- 27:04They're a blessing. So anyway, Willie was sitting in the Hospital for
- 27:15the Criminally Insane for the criminally Insane, awaiting trial on several unrelated charges to
- 27:19this. The detective went to pay Willy a visit and he claimed that he
- 27:25didn't remember an Elaine Foe. The detective obtains the DNA sample from Willie sends
- 27:30it to the lab to compare to the one that they had found at the
- 27:33crime scene. The DNA did come back as a match, and they had
- 27:37their guy now evidently the one that they'd sent in, since he wasn't in
- 27:44the code of system at all. It wasn't a matter of the it wouldn't
- 27:48even come back. It wasn't the mixed DNA that caused it not to come
- 27:52back. It was just that Willy had not done anything that would get his
- 27:56DNA in the system to begin with. So there was not even something they
- 27:59were like, maybe we have to look at this guy or something. Yeah,
- 28:03but anyways, but they were able to get a match though this is
- 28:06this is their guy. Yes, So on December fifth to December fifth,
- 28:11December first, December one, as STU would say, twenty fifteen, Willie
- 28:18Butterfield was charged with you know, with a name like that, he should
- 28:22have been like running a bacon a food truck or something. It's like,
- 28:27uh no, Willi's Butterfield. I don't know if i'd want any food from
- 28:32Willy No, but like with the name like Butterfield, you should serve something
- 28:36with like a lot of buttering it And you could be like fields of butter
- 28:41by Butterfield or something you know, like a and it could be what's something
- 28:48with a lot of butter in it? Rolls? No, Stu, what's
- 28:53wrong with you? All right? So Willie Butterfield was charged with murder,
- 28:57first degree criminals setual conduct, and first degree burglary. In July of twenty
- 29:03seventeen, before a trial could even be held, Willi was determined to be
- 29:07mentally unfit to stand trial and he was sent back to that mental facility for
- 29:11the criminally insane, and so that was where he was being housed and they
- 29:15just sent him back there. Which what's crazy to me is that the family
- 29:18acts shocked that he was ruled too insane to stand trial. But he came
- 29:25from a mental facility, so obviously he had already been determined for his previous
- 29:30crimes that he was too unfit to stand trial. That's why he's in the
- 29:36mental facility. So this guy obviously had some serious mental issues. Because it's
- 29:42hard to get uh what's the word to plea insanity. It's hard to plea
- 29:52insanity these days, Like it doesn't happen though often you have to be really,
- 29:56you have to be truly mentally ill to get that in a cordilaw,
- 30:00you know, because I think anybody who murder somebody is probably a little bit
- 30:03criminally and but you have to really, you have to, really, he
- 30:10was such an upstanding citizen. I mean, he just accident. Well you
- 30:14don't. You don't see too many people get get determined to be unfit to
- 30:18stand trial. But I do feel bad for the family because they did want
- 30:22they wanted a full trial, they wanted him to be accountable. But it
- 30:26just, I mean, this is where we're at. He was, yeah,
- 30:30he'd already been sitting in the in the mental institution for god knows how
- 30:33long, and they're like, I can't believe we're not going to get justice.
- 30:36It's like, really, well, I know, but I know,
- 30:40but that I understand what they're saying. They wanted a trial, they wanted
- 30:41all that stuff, and it's hard to wrap your head around that. But
- 30:45the fact was is that they said he will remain in that statemental facility in
- 30:48Columbia for the rest of his life. And so this allowed police to actually
- 30:52officially close out Elaine's murder crate case. So I mean, the good news
- 30:56is is he's not getting out, so and for the rest of the public,
- 31:00that's the good thing, like he's not getting out. But for them,
- 31:04they wanted him to actually be found guilty and have that closure and they
- 31:08didn't really get that, so that's unfortunate for them. Now the medical facility,
- 31:15so there was some good that came out this. A medical facility where
- 31:18Lane worked actually created a scholarship in her honor, and this is given to
- 31:22a high school student that wants to pursue a medical degree. So something positive
- 31:26to come out of it that they're doing to remember a Lane. So anyways,
- 31:33well, we've offended everybody in Walterborough. I think I offended everybody in
- 31:37Alabama as well. Yes, definitely some of the family members in this case.
- 31:45Now we're not going to be able to do Southern true crime podcast anymore
- 31:49if you just keep offending. I know, I can't keep knocking out states
- 31:52because I mean, Jersey, we lost them. But well, I mean,
- 31:56what do you wanna do? They brought the Jersey Shore or something back.
- 32:00I know, but we also brought uh I never watched it, but
- 32:04we have that uh Flora Bama Shore or something like that. It's the Florida
- 32:09again. Alabama's it's Alabama's fall. We have Florida. We have fen Florida
- 32:14every week with the Florida not Florida. Yeah. Anybody who doesn't like Harry
- 32:20Potter, anybody who doesn't like Friends, anybody who doesn't like the Royal Housewives.
- 32:24So chick, chick, chick. You got anybody internationally you'd like to
- 32:29insult? England, France, Ireland, anybody. No, not right now,
- 32:35Okay, I don't. I think I'm good, all right, Oh,
- 32:37except for all the people that, oh, you know, who needs
- 32:40to be ashamed of themselves, all the people that went on about the Cape
- 32:44Middleton rumors and sit there and discuss that the poor girl had abdominal surgery.
- 32:51And I was already thinking, I'm like, what are they giving a hard
- 32:52time for that takes months to recover from. That's not a simple surgery on
- 32:58your arm or something that's your abdomen. So she's just sitting it out and
- 33:01everything. I'm like, why don't they leaving this girl alone? And then
- 33:04she has to come out and tell Berty she has cancer. It's like,
- 33:06come on, what's wrong with you people? So yeah, all those people
- 33:08suck. Well you know who else sucks? All the free Brittany people.
- 33:13Because I was like, are you sure Brittany how to be free? What
- 33:15do you know is going on there? I was part of the free Brittany.
- 33:17I was not. I was like, I don't know, I'm not
- 33:19too sure. Maybe they got a reason to have a conservatorship on her.
- 33:23And then they freed Brittany and yeah she does. Look Brittany freed does love.
- 33:29She just acting cookie. Yeah, I mean it's her money decked kookie
- 33:34with it's her right as a person. I mean, look, Amanda Bynes
- 33:37is free and she's obviously Oh that's a new one. Well, how was
- 33:42that a new one? You've been missing out on the Amanda Bynes stuff because
- 33:45she's been no I had put the quiet on the set of documentary on or
- 33:49whatever. So of course they talked about Amanda Bndes. Maybe they just said
- 33:52she was crazy to shut her up and know she's crazy. She has Yeah,
- 33:55she's crazy. I don't think we're supposed to sa crazy. She I
- 34:00think she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia which does have an onset, a
- 34:07late onset of like around like age twenty five or so, like that is
- 34:09the average age, I think. But anyways, no, she she I
- 34:13met Amanda Bnes once. Student know this, but if anybody knows, when
- 34:16you remember, the store is Stephen Barry's, and not to be confused with
- 34:22Twig and Berry's. Stephen Barry's. They were these like clothing stores and there
- 34:28was one in Arlington, Texas, and they used to collaborate with celebrities,
- 34:31so they had Sarah Jessica Parker did a line there, and then Amanda Bynes
- 34:36did one, and so she actually came to the Arlington store and she was
- 34:38signing autographs. So me and my mom went and got the autograph and met
- 34:45Amanda Bynes, and then I guess her illness had an onset and she she
- 34:50ended up They found her neked in the middle of a crosswalk in California,
- 34:57and she's had a bunch of so she went, she got admitted to a
- 35:00mental facility and she spent how many of her years there and then she got
- 35:05out. She's had like a bunch of plastic surgery. She has a heart
- 35:07tattoo under her eye. She's completely unrecognizable, and now she's gonna she's I
- 35:12think she had a podcast and now she's going to be a manicurist. Like
- 35:15she's not well. She shouldn't be. And you can tell Brittany is not
- 35:21well either. But free Amanda, Free Brittany. Best we can do is
- 35:25OJ. Best we can do is OJI. That was the running joke that
- 35:30was, like free Brittany, God's like best I can give you is OJ.
- 35:34So yep, the meme from the old pongh Yeah. Anyways, all
- 35:37right, Sue, do you have a y'all need Jesus? Yes? I
- 35:39do? Okay coming to us this week? From The New York Post,
- 35:43published January twentieth, twenty twenty four, by one Catherine don Lavit don Levy
- 35:52underwear, stealing, burglar, rearranged, stalking victims home during a heist Florida
- 36:01Not Florida, not Florida, Idaho cops say and armed and dangerous transient thief
- 36:07has been breaking into the homes of women he was stalking. Do you want
- 36:10to know why? I don't think it's Florida. Why Because they're organizing things,
- 36:15they're cleaning things, they're doing things. Wow, Floridians, you're just
- 36:21basing all this on my airbnb. And we got that one. Yes,
- 36:23not because they didn't clean it. Oh yeah, it was. I had
- 36:29to file a complaint. I was a full on I was a justified Karen
- 36:34in that moment that we actually had to leave that for It was so we
- 36:37had an airbnb and it was so disgusting. So we only had one child
- 36:42at the time. I was pregnant with our son. We booked the airbnb.
- 36:46And so she's walking around. She's barefoot because you know, she's a
- 36:51baby, and and I don't believe in shoes for babies. You know,
- 36:54controversial topic with my mother in law, but for me, at least put
- 37:00on some flip flops. You don't walk around a house or nothing. Okay
- 37:02a baby, yes, no. Anyways, because they needed they need to
- 37:07fill their feet. They need to understand like what what their feet are not
- 37:13Anyways, she walks around it. Within ten minutes her feet are black on
- 37:16the bottom. That's how disgusting. Yes, that's how disgusting this airbnb was.
- 37:21The photos were not that we were getting the wish version of the photos
- 37:27that we that we saw on the Airbnb. So the wish you know,
- 37:31like the the things do. Yes. So we got the the alternative Amazon,
- 37:38Yes, so we we got the everybody we got the wish version at
- 37:43the Airbnb anyway, So that like I was like, we're not staying here.
- 37:46We didn't even unpack our stuff. We didn't try not to touch anything.
- 37:50Well, we didn't have any choice. We were there late. What
- 37:52were we going to do. I'm just saying we stayed one night. Yeah,
- 37:54we stayed one night, and I was like, immediately, we're not
- 37:57unpacking our stuff, We're not doing anything. We're not touching anything in here.
- 38:00Will get takeout. We were not using any of the and we've had
- 38:02we've had really good experience with Airbnb, like super nice airbnbs and everything was
- 38:07great. Not this one. And so we left the next morning, drove
- 38:10an hour and a half or two to Daytona, Yeah, and got a
- 38:14hotel there. An Airbnb did give back the money for them because they're like,
- 38:17Okay, it must have been pretty bad if they were, they're not
- 38:21just trying to get away with get I wasn't trying to get free nights.
- 38:23I was. I mean, it was a lot of an inconvenience for us
- 38:25to leave with a toddler, and I was pregnant. It was a anyways,
- 38:31go on, that's why I don't think it's Florida. Go On,
- 38:34it's the one dirty airbion ban. Yeah, it's one dirty airband nine done
- 38:37passed off Florida again twice. Well, that's a crystal territory. Okay,
- 38:43I guess I'll just start over. I guess No, you don't have an
- 38:45armed and dangerous transient thief has been breaking into the homes of women he has
- 38:49been stalking, and even took the time to rearrange one of his victims furniture.
- 38:53Ida hope, please, said Jacob Smart. Thirty eight was named Thursday
- 38:59as man they had been hunting over the last several months for carrying out a
- 39:04string of burglaries and boise. The looter was caught on multiple surveillance videos nonchalantly
- 39:10walking in into his victim's properties, one time feeling comfortable enough to pet the
- 39:15homeowner's dog as it followed him around the yard. Hello, Roscoe, and
- 39:21bring a couple of Pupperonis. Well, at least the dog. At least
- 39:23he was nice to the dog. I mean, this is true. We
- 39:27would have all been outraged. Had he kicked the dog or any other way
- 39:31would have been of the entires. We wouldn't even been able to do it
- 39:35about the dog abuse. We wouldn't like trigger warning dogs kicked. He also
- 39:42forced his way inside on several occasions by kicking down the doors. The videos
- 39:46show. Once inside his victims home, Smart allegedly nabbed their underwear, debit
- 39:52and credit cards, weapons and more. Oh, the old granny panty grabber.
- 39:58Well, I thought he was just throwing under aware, the thong thief,
- 40:01the panty pilfer. Did you just come up with those? Yes?
- 40:08I do. I don't believe you just came up with them. I just
- 40:13found a story like ago. Okay. Did they say that you think I'm
- 40:16that quick? Did they say that in the article that they give those names?
- 40:20They did not? Okay, And at least while you were on top
- 40:22of things, and at least one instance, Smart did some redecorating, according
- 40:27to the police. And if you would come in and like still underwear and
- 40:30then clean the house afterwards, he can take mine for sure. Just come
- 40:34in quietly, clean the house, take the underwear, and leaf. What
- 40:37if they were moist panties? That's fine, if you'll just clean the house
- 40:40first. I don't care. And moist is the most disgusting word, yes,
- 40:45I know, I just found that. And panties, I mean,
- 40:47I'm talking about it underwear some drawers. I mean, how do you not
- 40:52slip moist panties in? Because somewhere somebody is disgusted by it? Both those
- 40:59words. I don't like the word panties. I call them underwear or moist
- 41:05or moist, which is which is hard to get away from because I make
- 41:10some banana bread and it's moist. It is, and it's so good.
- 41:16But I would never use that word to describe it though. Well, I
- 41:20like when my banana's moist, Stewart, what's wrong with you? I don't
- 41:27like them too? Green fish Jesus or just go come on now. In
- 41:36one burglary, the suspect moved the personal items around in the home. In
- 41:39another burglary, the suspect entered the home while the victims were asleep. That's
- 41:45scary. Fuck. Yeah, if you're going to steal my underworar and clean
- 41:47my house, please do it while I'm out. Yes, stole house keys
- 41:52and then and was then seen on surveillance video, later attempting to re enter
- 41:57the house, but the victims had already changed locks. Smart Yes. Smart
- 42:04is accused of carrying out five burglaries and boise between August and October twenty twenty
- 42:09three, and may have continued his heist beyond state lines. Multiple stolen the
- 42:16involved maybe multiple stolen goods, including several from the boise victims, were recently
- 42:22covered when he was picked up in Oregon, But Smart fled? Will you
- 42:28kiss everybody else off by calling it Oregon over there? Well you do that
- 42:32already, I know, episodes and episodes ago. But Smart fled while cops
- 42:39were attempting to place him under arrest. Loose. Smart is still on the
- 42:45land and is aware of the five hundred thousand dollars nationwide extra ditable. Oh
- 42:52my god, am I just invited him into our home? You did?
- 42:55He is considered armed and dangerous, police said, because he did still the
- 43:00guns. Smart is described as being five ft eleven inches tall and weighing two
- 43:05hundred pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. Oh. I thought we
- 43:07were almost describing stew What the fat part of the tall part? Because I
- 43:13ain't that tall? The fat part short fat? I got you I got
- 43:20you. Law enforcement believes. Law enforcement believes he traveled recently through the Pacific
- 43:29Northwest. Well, he wasn't Oregon, so he's in. Yeah, he's
- 43:35it's a long way from him. When was this article January of this year?
- 43:38Oh, well, he could be anywhere at this point? Could could
- 43:42you literally go from here to New York in? I don't think he's here
- 43:45hours. I don't think he's here in Opaso, Texas though. Oh,
- 43:50you're trying to throw him over us. We also have those large pit bulls
- 43:53that we watch. We do. We we have seven pit bulls and trained
- 44:00shepherds that we that were retired from the police department. We do keep them
- 44:04here with us. Plus multiple guns, plus multiple security systems, and a
- 44:13very angry, angry three year olds. We got a tech cat actually too.
- 44:17We do have a kid, and we actual Jinks will growl at the
- 44:21door when somebody comes to. Of all those other things, the only thing
- 44:24that's true is the is the tech cat. He growls at the door if
- 44:30anybody comes to. I wonder if he'd actually jump on somebody's face, if
- 44:32they can in attack. He might. He's crazy. Jangles is too fat
- 44:37and lazy, oh yeah. By the way, Jinks is still alive as
- 44:40of this is still him. Yeah, even though the vet said he could
- 44:45die tomorrow or a year from now. That was that was four years ago.
- 44:50He's still plucking along, growling at people gonna get the panty pilfer,
- 45:00granny panty grabber? What was the other one? Long thief underwear, you
- 45:07surper? I don't know what. Can we work in the word mightily Our
- 45:14ass must have been big for those panties to mightily hold it back. I
- 45:17don't know. Oh my god. Okay, all right, that's even enough
- 45:22for the from what do you call them? The the hay stews to what
- 45:29do you what you call them? You say something hay stews, to buy
- 45:37stews, the hebbs, hey everyone by oh hey everyone, to buy stews?
- 45:44Okay, yes, the the hebbs that stick around from beginning to end,
