Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Trump's bad policies compound into crisis for American voters

- 0:00Speaker 1: Donald Trump's tariffs are becoming a huge freaking problem for
- 0:04Speaker 1: his party as we get closer to the midterm elections,
- 0:06Speaker 1: in part because Trump has been trying for a while
- 0:09Speaker 1: to convince Americans that his tariffs somehow don't raise prices,
- 0:13Speaker 1: even though they definitely raise prices.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Economists of all stripes say that ultimately consumers pay the
- 0:23Speaker 2: price of tariffs.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I don't believe you.
- 0:25Speaker 2: How do you make sure that these CEOs, that these
- 0:28Speaker 2: companies don't in fact... pass on the cost of tariffs
- 0:32Speaker 2: to their consumers. They cost Americans nothing.
- 0:36Speaker 1: But despite Trump's denial of reality with a straight face,
- 0:40Speaker 1: it appears that he actually does know how tariffs work.
- 0:43Speaker 1: When it suits him to know, of course. Last week,
- 0:45Speaker 1: in response to the rising cost of beef, Trump's big
- 0:48Speaker 1: idea for driving down prices was to drop tariffs on beef. Because, again,
- 0:53Speaker 1: tariffs raise prices for consumers, as we all know, including him.
- 0:57Speaker 1: But in the same week that Trump is saying he
- 0:59Speaker 1: will lower those tariffs on beef, he is also jacking
- 1:02Speaker 1: up tariffs on all sorts of things from one of
- 1:04Speaker 1: our country's biggest trading partners, Canada. After trade talks collapsed
- 1:08Speaker 1: last week, this weekend, Trump slapped new 50 percent tariffs
- 1:12Speaker 1: on hundreds of Canadian goods. And yesterday, Canada retaliated with
- 1:16Speaker 1: tariffs of up to 50 percent on hundreds of American goods.
- 1:20Speaker 1: That means Americans should expect higher prices on everything from
- 1:23Speaker 1: cars to toilet paper, lots of other things. That is
- 1:26Speaker 1: going to be hard for Republicans to defend. It's going
- 1:29Speaker 1: to be especially hard in the states that border Canada,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like Minnesota. a state that imports about $ 7 billion more
- 1:36Speaker 1: from Canada than it exports to Canada every year. How
- 1:39Speaker 1: are Republicans in states like Minnesota going to justify all
- 1:42Speaker 1: of this to voters?
- 1:43Speaker 3: I'm really not sure.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And they don't seem to be sure either. Here was
- 1:47Speaker 1: Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, Lisa DeMuth, yesterday, having
- 1:51Speaker 1: a really hard time answering the question, where do you
- 1:54Speaker 1: stand on the president's tariffs?
- 1:58Speaker 4: You know, tariffs definitely have a purpose, and my hope
- 2:02Speaker 4: as we look forward, even with Canada, is that those
- 2:05Speaker 4: talks would resume and we could make things more affordable
- 2:08Speaker 4: for Minnesota as we're looking just at that bordering piece, too.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Tariffs definitely have a purpose, but I think the talks
- 2:18Speaker 4: need to continue or restart again.
- 2:21Speaker 3: As it is. Okay. If you're in Minnesota, I don't
- 2:24Speaker 3: know what that means.
- 2:25Speaker 1: But joining me now is Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
- 2:27Speaker 1: She is the Democratic candidate for governor.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Okay, let me start by asking you this.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It's great to see you. Help us understand what impact
- 2:36Speaker 1: Trump's trade war with Canada is going to have on
- 2:39Speaker 1: the people of Minnesota. How are the people you are
- 2:42Speaker 1: running to represent, you represent now, going.
- 2:44Speaker 3: To experience this firsthand?
- 2:47Speaker 5: Jen, I can't tell you how devastating this is, particularly
- 2:51Speaker 5: on our farmers and ranchers' So Minnesota is fourth in
- 2:53Speaker 5: the country for ag exports.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And all of our exports, including ag, are now 13% down.
- 3:01Speaker 5: It's like $ 3.
- 3:01Speaker 3: 4 billion.
- 3:03Speaker 5: And this is a big problem, because especially having just
- 3:07Speaker 5: finished a nine-county tour in rural Minnesota to farms, one
- 3:12Speaker 5: farmer called me, said to me a few months ago,
- 3:15Speaker 5: it's like a perfect storm of ugly, because their export
- 3:18Speaker 5: markets are devastated. Because, of course, they've cut off with
- 3:22Speaker 5: retaliatory tariffs. And then their input costs, like fertilizer and
- 3:27Speaker 5: things like that, not just from the tariffs, but the
- 3:29Speaker 5: closure of.
- 3:30Speaker 3: The Straits of Hormuz, are also hit.
- 3:33Speaker 5: So he basically has created this just horror show.
- 3:38Speaker 3: In terms of the Midwestern states and those bordering Canada.
- 3:42Speaker 3: For us, Canada eclipses our trade with.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Canada, our number two, three, and four combined. So when
- 3:48Speaker 5: you look at these states, as I'm listening to you
- 3:50Speaker 5: talking about Senate, governor races, like Iowa, like Michigan, like Wisconsin,
- 3:58Speaker 5: and all the way across the northern tier.
- 4:00Speaker 3: It's not just farming.
- 4:02Speaker 5: It's also small businesses. $ 1, 700 a year for the average
- 4:06Speaker 5: family in America just last year, and it's even going
- 4:09Speaker 5: to go up more if he continues this. So he
- 4:12Speaker 5: just keeps going, and the people now understand what's happening,
- 4:16Speaker 5: and it is a major contributor to why costs are
- 4:19Speaker 5: up so high.
- 4:21Speaker 3: It is.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Trump, a lot of his policies are putting Republican candidates
- 4:25Speaker 1: in very difficult positions as they try to explain them.
- 4:29Speaker 1: This is happening across the country. I just played your opponent,
- 4:33Speaker 1: your Republican opponent, Lisa DeMuth.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I don't.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Can you explain what she was trying to say? Do
- 4:39Speaker 1: you understand her position at all? Or what's the difference.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Between the two of you?
- 4:44Speaker 5: I don't know which farmer she's talking to. Because she
- 4:48Speaker 5: is so afraid of pissing off Donald Trump. They have been,
- 4:52Speaker 5: the Republicans in our state, are literally running as rubber
- 4:55Speaker 5: stamps to Donald Trump. That is not just on tariffs.
- 4:58Speaker 5: It's also on embracing the big, beautiful bill. She said
- 5:02Speaker 5: that's been good for Minnesota. Well, look at these Medicaid
- 5:05Speaker 5: cuts and the effect on rural hospitals. She has embraced
- 5:10Speaker 5: the war in Iran. Look at what has happened there.
- 5:13Speaker 5: with not just the loss of life, but also the
- 5:16Speaker 5: effect when it comes to price spikes and the like.
- 5:19Speaker 5: So that's what's going on here. And especially when it
- 5:21Speaker 5: comes to tariffs, I don't care if you're a farmer,
- 5:25Speaker 5: if you're.
- 5:25Speaker 3: A rancher, like the.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Cattle rancher I was with yesterday, or whether it is
- 5:32Speaker 5: a small business or just someone that's trying to buy
- 5:34Speaker 5: a stroller for their kid. You see the effects of
- 5:38Speaker 5: these tariffs every single day. And Americans, maybe when this
- 5:42Speaker 5: all started, they weren't as focused on what tariffs do
- 5:45Speaker 5: and what they are. But they are tariff taxes on Americans.
- 5:49Speaker 5: And they are especially hitting the Midwest and the upper
- 5:53Speaker 5: Midwest areas. and the voters know it, and he just
- 5:56Speaker 5: won't stop. Supreme Court tells him I'm illegal.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I was there. I went to the argument.
- 6:00Speaker 5: I watched Gorsuch as he declared in that booming voice
- 6:04Speaker 5: that he thought this was unconstitutional.
- 6:06Speaker 3: He didn't give up. Then Trump goes and looks for
- 6:08Speaker 3: another place.
- 6:09Speaker 5: And what the people of our state want, they want
- 6:12Speaker 5: a governor that's going to stand up for them and
- 6:15Speaker 5: not just do what Donald Trump wants or try to
- 6:19Speaker 5: curry favor with him.
- 6:22Speaker 1: We only have about a minute left, so let me
- 6:23Speaker 1: ask you one that's been on the minds of a
- 6:25Speaker 1: lot of voters, which is just about mail-in ballots. So
- 6:28Speaker 1: many people rely on this. There have been a number
- 6:30Speaker 1: of rulings by courts as well over the last couple
- 6:33Speaker 1: of days. It's pretty confusing. What are you telling voters
- 6:36Speaker 1: in Minnesota about their rights and whether they should plan
- 6:39Speaker 1: on participating in mail-in voting?
- 6:43Speaker 3: You know, they have a right to mail in their ballot.
- 6:45Speaker 5: And more and more people in our state, we have
- 6:47Speaker 5: the highest, if not one of the top voter turnouts
- 6:51Speaker 5: every single election. And some of them go on election day.
- 6:54Speaker 5: We have same day registration. But a number of them
- 6:56Speaker 5: are mailing in their ballots. And I especially tell them now,
- 7:00Speaker 5: mail in those ballots. Do it early. Make sure you vote.
- 7:03Speaker 5: We have early voting today. September 18th. Information, my website, amyclobuchar.com.
- 7:09Speaker 5: And just make sure that you are voting and you
- 7:12Speaker 5: do it early. Because we know Donald Trump is threatening
- 7:15Speaker 5: these elections. We saw it in that speech he gave
- 7:17Speaker 5: in prime time. And I'm concerned that he is not
- 7:21Speaker 5: going to stand true to our democracy.
- 7:24Speaker 3: So to me, the.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Answer is, no matter what Courts are saying in different
- 7:28Speaker 5: states that what you do is you have your right
- 7:30Speaker 5: to mail in your ballot, do it, and vote, and
- 7:34Speaker 5: vote like you believe you care about our democracy, because
- 7:38Speaker 5: this guy is trying to tear it down. Our state
- 7:41Speaker 5: fair starts tomorrow, Jen, the biggest state fair.
- 7:44Speaker 1: In the country. Fun.
- 7:46Speaker 5: We do not include Texas because they're open 30 days.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I'm sure Tallarico would disagree.
- 7:51Speaker 5: But the point is, is that we're talking democracy in
- 7:54Speaker 5: action there. And a lot of our message is going
- 7:57Speaker 5: to be make sure you vote and vote early.
- 8:00Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Have fun at that fair, Senator Amy Klobuchar.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Thank you as always for joining me. I'll eat a
- 8:04Speaker 3: cheese curd for you, Jen. I'll eat a cheese curd
- 8:06Speaker 3: for you.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Appreciate it.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you again. Have fun.
