Transcript
- 0:03All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon, the
- 0:06Iowa Sports Radio Network talking sports with you for the
- 0:10next 6 hours. I'll start things off Trent's on
- 0:13vacation final day so Ken Miller until 2 here today coming up on
- 0:18the program Bama Bob will join me in about till 5 minutes or
- 0:22so. We'll we didn't get through the
- 0:24list of topics we wanted to yesterday, so we'll spend 10
- 0:28minutes or so getting do that today.
- 0:30Still some SEC to look at. I want to make bring Notre Dame
- 0:33into the conversation. We spent I think 4 days this
- 0:37week talking about the Big 12, the Group of Five, the Big 10,
- 0:40the ACC and just ran out of time when it came to the SEC and
- 0:43Notre Dame. So we'll do that to finish
- 0:45things off here in a few minutes at 1225 Tom Cakert
- 0:51hawkeyereport.com will join me. Well, the latest on the Hawks
- 0:56news Kirk Fair. It says birthday, by the way, a
- 0:58milestone birthday 70 today. So HBD to the HC at the
- 1:03University of So Tom Cakert coming up at 1:25.
- 1:07Then Mitch Holtis will join us. Drew tranquil.
- 1:10He just saw it was carted off the field according to X very
- 1:14talented player for the chief. So tranquil, what does this mean
- 1:18for? Well, I don't know if they'll be
- 1:20an update on tranquil status at that at 12:45 when I talked to
- 1:25Mitch. I find it somewhat unlikely that
- 1:27they'll be anything unless there's nothing there.
- 1:29And then perhaps we'll the we'll learn some news on the
- 1:32linebacker 102 Mike Palm. Mike Palm will join me from
- 1:38Circus Sports. We'll go over a variety of
- 1:40topics with Mike and then Eugene Repay from the Des Moines
- 1:44Register will come aboard here at about till 1:30 or
- 1:47thereabouts. Real quick before we get to
- 1:49Bama, Bob, I want to talk a little bit about the trade
- 1:51deadline came and went. I'll say this about it.
- 1:53It was a spectacular, too big of a word.
- 1:58I mean, the action at the trade deadline, the Major League
- 2:00Baseball, I don't remember it being as active.
- 2:02Maybe it's with the pending lockout and it's oh, it sure
- 2:06seems like that's a, I hate to say it, a foregone conclusion
- 2:10that that baseball is kind of tentative at this point in 2027.
- 2:15By the way, the Cubs and Wrigley Field got awarded the 2027 All
- 2:19Star game Today might be a little bit redundant.
- 2:22There's no season, No, what are they going to do?
- 2:24Sure, they'll push it back, but still, I hope we have it
- 2:27obviously, as summer without baseball sucks.
- 2:32Blaine and simple the Twins look, I I think maybe if you're
- 2:38trying to find a silver lining, Twins fans, yeah, it's going to
- 2:41hurt for a year or two, but maybe down the road you'll look
- 2:44back at this day. July 31st, 2026 is the day that
- 2:49maybe changed the fortunes of the franchise, assuming the pole
- 2:54ads don't own it still and you have to believe that they are
- 2:59going to sell. They're they're certainly
- 3:01trying, but man, oh man, that roster now.
- 3:04How would you like to work in ticket sales at Target Field
- 3:07Phones? I mean, they're ringing.
- 3:09Do we order tickets on the phone anymore?
- 3:11I'm not sure we do. Anyways, I get my point is
- 3:14there's going to be plenty of good seats available at Target
- 3:16Field for the remainder of the season.
- 3:19But there are a couple of teams I thought got marketably better
- 3:22yesterday and I give them full marks for doing so.
- 3:25And in particular, I think you start and when it comes to the
- 3:27American League, you start in the West.
- 3:28The Astros, the Mariners and the Rangers all push their chips to
- 3:31the middle of the table. That's going to be a fascinating
- 3:343 team W out West in the American League where the Astros
- 3:37have a 4 1/2 game lead right now.
- 3:40I thought the Tigers did maybe should have done more.
- 3:44I maybe it's hard to be critical.
- 3:47They're tied for the best record in the American League at this
- 3:50point, but I thought that maybe they left some things undone.
- 3:55Meanwhile, in the American League, the Yankees made some
- 3:58moves, the Blue Jays. Look, the Blue Jays trade
- 4:00deadline is all about one guy. It's about Shane Bieber.
- 4:03If he can get back and he can pitch this year and the minor
- 4:07league starts have been good as he makes his way back from Tommy
- 4:09John's surgery, he's going to make another start, I guess, at
- 4:12the AAA level in Buffalo, where their AAA franchise is located.
- 4:16But if you've got a futures ticket on the Blue Jays, I like
- 4:19the moves that they made, in particular Bieber if he can get
- 4:23back. Meanwhile, in the National
- 4:24League, the two at the top of the of the East, both the Mets
- 4:28and the Phillies addressing the bullpen.
- 4:30Of the two, maybe the Mets made the most significant moves.
- 4:33And I like Durango into the Phillies.
- 4:35But the Mets were very, very active.
- 4:38And then a team that was as active as anybody who's going to
- 4:42pass right over the Central Division like the Cubs.
- 4:44Get Castro. Yeah, you're expecting more,
- 4:46right? Kept hearing about his frontline
- 4:48starter. Let me ask you this question
- 4:50when it comes to the Cubs, if if they do have to go to a game
- 4:53three and they will, assuming they, you know, don't get
- 4:56knocked out in two games in the wild card.
- 4:58If they do get if they do get to a the next round, who's going to
- 5:04start Game 3 for the Cubs at this point?
- 5:06Tyone Colin Ray Soroka No, I, I, I don't, I don't love the moves.
- 5:15It might have to be Kate Horton. Kate Horton might be your guy.
- 5:19Believe it or not, starting in game #3 if they're oh, Matthew
- 5:24Boyd, let's all go Emanaga Boyd in one, in one of those 2 will
- 5:30start. One of them will be the second
- 5:32one. Game 2 and then game three.
- 5:34I guess Kate Horton at this point.
- 5:39But but back to the Padres, who made I I thought there's
- 5:43something about franchises that just you know what, let's hear
- 5:47and now it let's just go for it. And they did.
- 5:50They didn't trade Dylan CC still a a Padre here today.
- 5:53But man, oh man Mason Miller Suarez with his 30 something
- 5:57safe setting up up Freddy Fermin comes over.
- 5:59He's going to be the catcher going forward.
- 6:02This is a really good team to begin with.
- 6:05The Dodgers. I think their spot at the top of
- 6:08the division, yeah, they've got a three-game lead, but that's
- 6:11going to be a fascinating race down the stretch as Mike
- 6:14Shilton, those San Diego Padres going absolutely all out.
- 6:21All right, that music means it's time to talk a little college
- 6:23football. We'll do.
- 6:23So right now. He's Bama.
- 6:25Bob back with me to dot IS and cross T's and put a bow on the
- 6:29week. First of all, thanks for doing
- 6:31this. It's good for both of us, I
- 6:32think, to get reacquainted with college football.
- 6:35And it is love these conversations.
- 6:37You know what, Bam, before we get into the SEC, let's start
- 6:40with Notre Dame and then we'll finish up on the ACC.
- 6:42We started yesterday, but we didn't get very far.
- 6:45Notre Dame, obviously coming off a phenomenal year last year,
- 6:49played in the championship game, didn't go their way, but wasn't
- 6:52a terrible game. It was what, 10 points?
- 6:54Something like that was less than two touchdowns.
- 6:56In the end, Ohio State was. Until the pick, you know, until
- 6:58the Bumble recovery or whatever. At the end, they were right
- 7:01there. Yeah, they were knocking at the
- 7:02door, so. Yeah, you know I agree.
- 7:03But yeah, so here we go again. No, Riley Leonard, he has moved
- 7:08on. The good news is, is Jeremiah
- 7:10Love is back and running back quarterback would have to be the
- 7:13big question. Marcus Freeman, I think they've
- 7:16got the right guy there. You're #4 for him.
- 7:19Your thoughts on Notre Dame and what their forecast for this
- 7:22season looks like? I'd be shocked if they're not a
- 7:24playoff team, but how do you see it?
- 7:26Yeah, I agree. I mean, I think it will be a
- 7:28major disappointment if they're not a playoff team.
- 7:32I think I think if things break their way, maybe they could get
- 7:36a top four seed. I don't know for sure obviously,
- 7:41but you're right. The big thing is quarterback.
- 7:43I mean CJ Carr came in and he kind of was the red shirt
- 7:47freshman. He kind of, you know, looked
- 7:49like he was going to be their parent.
- 7:51But apparently from, and I was just reading a little bit about
- 7:54a practice report, you know, this, this Minchi is, has been
- 8:00running with the ones. So I mean, you know, is that
- 8:03just the way the reps are falling?
- 8:05And it's a good, it's a fair question.
- 8:07Or is, is he showing something that car's not?
- 8:10So my, my guess is, and this is, this is where, you know, we talk
- 8:14about it all the time. You know, you got a quarterback,
- 8:15you got a chance, but also if you don't, if you don't, if you
- 8:21got two guys, you don't have any.
- 8:22And so I don't, I would not be surprised if at some point
- 8:25during the season we see both these guys play, whether that's
- 8:28out of necessity, whether that's out of opportunity, whatever it
- 8:32happens to be. I think both these guys are
- 8:34going to play this year, if for no other reason than to try to
- 8:38keep them both happy, right? Because we know what happens
- 8:40next year. If one guy doesn't play, he's
- 8:42gone someone else. And by the way, I don't think
- 8:44Notre Dame get top 4C because they have to win a conference.
- 8:48But anyways. I thought they just.
- 8:49Oh yeah, you're well, I, I thought the, I thought they'd
- 8:52change it this year. They were just going well,
- 8:53maybe. They did.
- 8:54That's why we're doing this exercise.
- 8:56Yeah, I maybe I'm wrong and if I'm wrong, you know, wouldn't be
- 8:59the first time, but I thought they were just going to take top
- 9:01four in the rankings this year. OK, I thought that was the one
- 9:05change, but anyway, maybe I read that wrong.
- 9:08However, look, the schedule, you remember last year, we had their
- 9:12schedule last year and it was really, you know, they opened at
- 9:15A&M and they finished at USC and you kind of looked in the middle
- 9:18and there really wasn't right much right?
- 9:21It was very soft and especially when you threw Florida State in
- 9:23there who had just. A.
- 9:25Horrific season how? This year it's a little tougher,
- 9:29it's more front loaded. They open at Miami and I think
- 9:31that's a true Rd. game down to South Florida.
- 9:34You know, it's going to only be, you know, 115 heat index down
- 9:38there. So I think that's a week 0 or
- 9:41that's an August 30th game. Saturday.
- 9:44They didn't have a fine week. They do get A&L on the return
- 9:47trip to Notre Dame, so that should help.
- 9:49We talked the other day about the Boise game.
- 9:50That's kind of right in the middle of it, right?
- 9:52October 4th, Boise comes there, they get USC at home and then it
- 9:57kind of lightens maybe a little bit at the end.
- 9:58They finish at Boston College and at Navy, at Pitt, Syracuse
- 10:02at Stanford. So they can, if they can.
- 10:05Now, I don't know how this is going to work with, with an
- 10:08inexperienced quarterback. You maybe you would like that
- 10:11reversed a little bit because whoever's under center and
- 10:14that's why I think there's a chance you're going to see 2.
- 10:17Those first two games are tough and you know, you've got to, I
- 10:20think at a minimum split those. And if you somehow, if you've
- 10:25dropped both of them now they're fighting uphill the whole way
- 10:28the rest of the year and trying to gain momentum.
- 10:30So I think the schedule is a little tougher than it was last
- 10:35year, particularly with an inexperienced guy.
- 10:37I understand, but I agree with you on Freeman.
- 10:39I think he is the right guy. He was a he was a tremendously
- 10:44popular higher with his players. And frankly, he's done a better
- 10:49job at Notre Dame than Kelly's done at LSU.
- 10:53It's just facts. And so I think Notre Dame is not
- 10:57missing Brian Kelly at all. You know, he was successful
- 10:59there and you're, I think again, I mean, you know, this is no,
- 11:04you know, breaking news or, you know, insightfulness.
- 11:06They're going to they're going to rely on Jeremiah Love.
- 11:09That's who they're going to. I think they're going to feed
- 11:11him. They're going to try to help
- 11:13that. And they got the big physical
- 11:15offensive line. They're always going to have a
- 11:17tight end that can throw too because or two, because of the
- 11:22way they way Freeman likes to play and it's just Notre Dame.
- 11:25So they're I think the NCAA says they have to have an NFL tight
- 11:28end on the roster. I think it's mandatory.
- 11:31So, yeah, Love could be this year's Aston Gente, you know,
- 11:34the running back that kind of breaks out into, you know, if he
- 11:37if everything breaks his way and he could be in that Heisman
- 11:40conversation. I think a because he plays for
- 11:42Notre Dame and they get a lot of visibility.
- 11:45So, yeah, I think it would be disappointing if they did not
- 11:48make the playoff for sure. But the schedule is a little
- 11:52tougher this year than they do have a Rogue into Arkansas,
- 11:55which and it's just a weird place to try to go and play and
- 11:59win. They've they've done some stuff
- 12:01at home against high ranked opponents.
- 12:03Arkansas has they haven't done much else, but they've been
- 12:05pretty salty at home. So tough season.
- 12:08I think tougher this year schedule wise and also for the,
- 12:14you know, because of the inexperience of quarterbacks.
- 12:15Yeah, I'm, I'm with you. I mean, I'm looking.
- 12:17I had to. When you said Mitch, I thought,
- 12:19who the hell is this? You threw one pass last year.
- 12:23Yeah, one for one. Yeah, right.
- 12:26So, you know, let's try to keep that streak going.
- 12:28I was just, I was just looking at something practice report,
- 12:32you know, a little bit earlier today and they're saying he's
- 12:34running the 77 and the 11, the elevens with the with the ones.
- 12:38Now again, does that mean anything?
- 12:40I have no idea. You know, is it, is it, is it a,
- 12:43you know, kind of a bait and switch, sleight of hand,
- 12:45whatever that they're doing. But generally by this time, you
- 12:49know, if you're on, you're in August 1st and you, you know,
- 12:52you're, I know we got time, You know, really two weeks from now
- 12:56would kind of be, you know, the, the, the telling point, But you
- 13:00know, he's getting a chance. Let's put it that way.
- 13:02And that's again, that's why I really think they're going to,
- 13:04they'll wind up both guys playing.
- 13:06It's just who who's the guy going when they line up, when
- 13:10they, you know, tee it off against Miami?
- 13:12Yeah, the the kid that came in when Leonard left the
- 13:16championship game last year, Angelini transferred after the
- 13:18spring. So maybe there is some
- 13:19competition there and maybe these guys can play a little
- 13:22bit. Let's move on to the SEC.
- 13:23We've got 6 minutes left as I got to stay on time here and
- 13:26that's tougher. Easier said than done.
- 13:29Yeah. Well, since you mentioned Brian
- 13:30Kelly, LSU will see them right off the bat.
- 13:33I mean, that game at Clemson's going to be absolutely massive
- 13:35for both school, right? For both schools.
- 13:38Nussmeyer. A lot of people love them.
- 13:41I don't love him. I think he's OK.
- 13:43What kind of team will Brian Kelly have this year and does he
- 13:46have to win? Is there a number of, I mean, if
- 13:48they're, if they're 8 and 4, is that good enough?
- 13:52Nine and three, maybe. Like what's good enough this
- 13:55year? I think 8:00, Well, they're
- 13:57already howling down there, right?
- 13:58Because he really hasn't done anything much since he's been
- 14:01there. I think 8 and four.
- 14:03I think playoff is a minimum for him, not are they going to fire
- 14:08him if he doesn't make it. That's a lot of money.
- 14:11You go look at that contract and he's got a big contract with a
- 14:14big fat buyout, You know, and that's one thing that's kind of
- 14:18odd with coaches now with NIL, right?
- 14:21Because you got all the NIL money you got to pay the
- 14:22players. Can you really afford, you know,
- 14:25a $40 million buyout for a coach on top of that?
- 14:29So it's kind of odd how that NIL is sort of mixing into, you
- 14:33know, the coaching sources. It would be in the past.
- 14:36You know what, they'll find a few boosters and, you know, pow,
- 14:38out he goes. Now you got to pay the players,
- 14:40right? So it's interesting.
- 14:43But yeah, I think anything short of a playoff is going to be
- 14:46tough for him. And their schedule is it's
- 14:48rough, Ken. I mean, you mentioned the game.
- 14:50They open at Clemson, then they get Florida.
- 14:53A two weeks later they go to Old Miss, they got South Carolina,
- 14:57they got A&L, they go to Alabama.
- 15:00I mean, that's, that's, I mean, I'm, I'm with you.
- 15:03I'm not 100% sold on Nuss Meyer. I think he's talented.
- 15:07He's be he looks the part, right?
- 15:09He's big. He's tall, big arm, you know,
- 15:12mobile when you need, when he needs to be.
- 15:14He just made mistakes last year. He made a lot of mistakes, 12
- 15:17interceptions. You've seen Brian Kelly, man,
- 15:20when when he's on a quarterback, he just, you know, chews him out
- 15:22on the sideline. And you got to be able to handle
- 15:25that if you're a quarterback playing for Brian Kelly, because
- 15:28he's not going to sugarcoat it and it's going to be public and
- 15:31he's going to talk about in the press conference.
- 15:32So, you know, you got to you got to deal with all that when
- 15:35you're talking with him. But they're kind of a they're
- 15:38they're getting a little love for, you know, sort of a sleeper
- 15:40pick in the SEC this year. I don't see it.
- 15:44But there's a lot of questions. You know, again, you look at
- 15:47everything else schedule and all that type of thing.
- 15:49But he is an experienced quarterback.
- 15:52So and that's something that other teams, Georgia, Alabama,
- 15:56even Texas, they've got a hyped guy, but they don't really have
- 15:59an experience, right? So I mean, they've they've got
- 16:02it. Ole Miss doesn't have it,
- 16:04Tennessee doesn't have it, you know, South Carolina does.
- 16:08And so you're just kind of right.
- 16:11So if you want to lean on quarterback as you're one of
- 16:15your factors in success for a season, then you got to put them
- 16:18in the mix there. But I don't know the schedule.
- 16:22Again, pretty tough. And you know, listen, the Wolves
- 16:25are starting to circle around Kelly.
- 16:27But again, and the schedule is rough.
- 16:29I mean, there's no question about it, just rough, especially
- 16:32when you throw a true Rd. game out of the chute at Clemson into
- 16:35that, that that's a tough way to start.
- 16:37I I think the two hottest seats in the SEC obviously Pittman in
- 16:42Arkansas, we both want to succeed, but I mean, he's he's
- 16:46got to do it this year. I'll tell you the one I think it
- 16:48is. And let's spend a minute on
- 16:49Oklahoma in our final 3 minutes. One on Oklahoma and one on
- 16:53Alabama. They bring in Washington State's
- 16:56quarterback Mateer. So they've got a new QB there.
- 16:59Venerables has to win. I mean, they won.
- 17:01They were six and seven last year.
- 17:04That's not good enough. Obviously your thought, I mean
- 17:08Week 2 Michigan, Oklahoma, huge spot, huge spot.
- 17:12What about Oklahoma? Yeah, I think there's some stuff
- 17:15there because, you know, the whole thing was, well, you know,
- 17:17what's a transition into the SEC?
- 17:18But look what Texas did, OK? They came in with you and, you
- 17:22know, their biggest rival, they did OK.
- 17:25You know, they they, I don't know if they ran Jackson Arnold
- 17:28off whatever. I think a key is going to be
- 17:30also, what does Jackson Arnold do at Auburn if he comes in and
- 17:33gets and I don't know that that's true.
- 17:36I don't know how, but if he comes in and you know, has an 8
- 17:39and four, nine and three season for Auburn and Oklahoma
- 17:41struggles, they're going to say, well, you know, you what what
- 17:44happened here? Why couldn't you Why couldn't
- 17:46you do this with him? A lot of factors go into that,
- 17:49but perception is reality. Well, they got a little bit of a
- 17:53bump last year beating Alabama late.
- 17:55OK, that was that was kind of the bump that maybe got them,
- 18:00you know, a little pressure off. But I agree with you.
- 18:02Mission going. I love Michigan going to
- 18:04Oklahoma. I mean, I just, I just love, I
- 18:06hope we don't get away from these.
- 18:07I love these power programs meeting on campus, right?
- 18:10And then they've got Auburn. So they're Jackson Arnold's
- 18:13going to go back to Norman. Baby, you want to talk about
- 18:15some pressure? OK, How, what are you going to
- 18:18do there if you know, you don't beat Michigan, let's say, and
- 18:22then Jackson Arnold comes in and lights you up.
- 18:24I'm not saying he will because I think Auburn's got some holes.
- 18:28But if he does, then you're going to get you're going to
- 18:30start get see some howling because after that you've got
- 18:33Texas, you go to South Carolina. How about this stretch, Texas at
- 18:38South Carolina, Ole Miss at Tennessee at Alabama and they
- 18:42finish with LSU. I don't they're going to
- 18:45struggle to get to a Balkan struggle for 7:00 and 5:00.
- 18:48Again, I'm with you. And I think the key game for
- 18:51them, obviously Texas, the biggest rival, if Jackson Arnold
- 18:55comes in and really, you know, lights them up, Venable is going
- 19:00to be in trouble because that schedule down the stretch is
- 19:02brutal. Last, the last team, let's take
- 19:06a look at Alabama. Obviously quarterback, I guess
- 19:09is a question mark at Alabama this year to correct me if I'm
- 19:12wrong, obviously Ryan Williams, if it's not Jeremiah Smith.
- 19:16This is the youngster you should be talking about at the wide
- 19:18receiver position. Your thoughts on Alabama?
- 19:219:00 and 4:00 last year. Is this a team that could win
- 19:25the SEC? They can and again, just because
- 19:29I think there's so much question around the conference at
- 19:32quarterback, think of everybody that left and think of the ones
- 19:36that do have experience. They're either new teams like
- 19:38Auburn Lagway at Florida, but their schedule is brutal.
- 19:43We talked about nuts Meyer, you know, darts gone.
- 19:47You know, Simpson's the guy right now.
- 19:49But again, you know, and I think they're going to rely on their
- 19:51defense and the the the feeling, and maybe it's more hope than
- 19:55than feeling is that the Boer year 2, he brought in Ryan
- 19:58Grubb. You know, Grubb was with him in
- 20:00at Washington. He didn't come last year.
- 20:03He went to the Seahawks and now he's he's the offensive
- 20:05coordinator. So the hope is that it'll be
- 20:07more continuity there. Milro really didn't fit any what
- 20:13either one of them wanted to do. A great athlete, but we all know
- 20:16the struggles he had. Simpson inexperienced, but if
- 20:21you believe what's coming out of practice it's it's it's pretty
- 20:24good right not much behind him. The schedule is tough.
- 20:27They go to Florida State. They do get Wisconsin at home.
- 20:30I don't think that game is, you know, really going to be a
- 20:33challenge. Nope for them, maybe it was I
- 20:36agree, but they go to Georgia, they get Tennessee, they go to
- 20:40South Carolina, they got LSU. I mean, it's it's, it is what it
- 20:44is in the SEC, right, But I think they they should contend,
- 20:49you know, 10 and 2. They should be in that mix to
- 20:52win at least to get to the SEC championship game.
- 20:55Generally, if you get there, you're going to be a playoff.
- 20:58If if they don't, then then we're going to have some some
- 21:01conversations around him and listen, he's in a bad position
- 21:05going after Nick Saban. Just bottom line, nobody to
- 21:08duplicate that ever. But it is what it is and he took
- 21:11it and he's getting paid for it. So we didn't do.
- 21:14Absolutely, Bama. We'll talk in the weeks ahead.
- 21:16Thanks for spending the week with me.
- 21:17Appreciate it, buddy. We're out of time.
- 21:18Thank you. Paul.
- 21:19Anytime, pal. Good to talk to you Bama, Bob,
- 21:21Trent and I, I talk college football.
- 21:24Every Monday we recap the week. On Friday we preview the
- 21:29weekend. We'll take your time out, but
- 21:31let's talk Hawks with Tom Caicard, hawkeyereport.com for
- 21:34Tom, part of the on three network position battles he's
- 21:37looking for in training camp. Talk to Tom about that,
- 21:40etcetera. When we come back it's Miller
- 21:42and Condon, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:45Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network 1230.
- 21:49Mitch Holt is coming up in about 15 minutes.
- 21:52Chief Staley training camp reports Papa John's throughout
- 21:55the state of Iowa. Sponsor those.
- 21:56Let's talk some Hawks. Tom Caker covers them.
- 21:59Tom joins us every week, 50 out of the 52 weeks of the year on
- 22:03Friday. But sometimes we have to move
- 22:05around a little bit. Tom, good to talk to you.
- 22:08Who looks fast in those pictures that are showing up online?
- 22:11You know the you know the drill. Don't you?
- 22:13It's unreal. I love it.
- 22:15I love it. Just the some of the comments.
- 22:17Favorite favorite things ever was boy they look fast and I was
- 22:21like. Still picture.
- 22:23Yeah. Cracks me up.
- 22:26Well, let's get into, by the way, Kirk Ference's 70th
- 22:29birthday. He truly is, at least to me,
- 22:32listening to him speak. I don't know when the end's
- 22:36coming, Tom. Not that I think anybody, well,
- 22:37some people probably are, but I think the majority of Hawk fans
- 22:41are are are good with him staying until he's ready to go
- 22:45on his own. But I don't think that's anytime
- 22:48soon. Oh, yeah, I don't think, yeah, I
- 22:54think everybody's just comfortable with with him, you
- 22:57know, being around, you know, what I think I think happened
- 23:02was it is after that, I think after 2015, everybody was just
- 23:07like, OK, he's going to coach and tell you what's going to
- 23:09coach anymore. You know, that's sort of like
- 23:12where we're at now. How many, you know, I think what
- 23:16you said in the last week, where are we at in the golf course?
- 23:19You know, 18 hitting up to the green.
- 23:24You know, I don't think there's a whole lot of time left, but I
- 23:29you know, that's because you don't see guys coaching to their
- 23:3280s unless they're Joe Paterno. You know, it's just you just
- 23:35don't. So I think a few more years and
- 23:39I think everybody's going to be fine with that.
- 23:41And unless they have like two years in a row where it's, but I
- 23:46think Kirk will recognize that if that happened.
- 23:49I agree. And just kind of say, you know
- 23:51what, probably time. Yep, a time for a new voice.
- 23:54I totally agree with you. I don't think you would run the
- 23:57program into the ground. I think it means too much to him
- 23:59and his family. I really do.
- 24:01Well, let's talk about what's going on, Tom.
- 24:03And with training camp underway, biggest position battle to you
- 24:07is, is what? Or maybe a couple of them.
- 24:10What are you watching? Maybe closer than others when it
- 24:12comes to position fights. Left tackle, but just because
- 24:17it's such an important position and it's a legitimate battle.
- 24:21Bryce George Dosler, Trevor Loud, the guy that I've kind of
- 24:25been pretty high on. So yeah, I think, I think those
- 24:29guys are, you know, engaged in a pretty good battle.
- 24:34I would say the cornerback position is up for grabs.
- 24:38I'm curious about the Barrios kid that came in from South
- 24:41Dakota, if he can work his way up and and get into a starting
- 24:46contending position there, defensive tackle, how is that
- 24:51rotation going to look? Because that's so important for
- 24:55Iowa stopping the run. They've got to have guys that
- 24:57eat the run and and you know, the run game up.
- 25:00And is Jonah Pace standing up? You know, I saw the hype reel
- 25:04with Bryce Hawthorne. Can Pittman, you know, emerge in
- 25:09his senior year? Because we know what Graves is.
- 25:12And I think we're pretty good with Llewellyn.
- 25:14The defensive end look like with Herket and Brian Allen and Max
- 25:19Llewellyn and, you know, the on and on.
- 25:21I mean, they've got some talent there, but the tackle is a
- 25:25question mark. So.
- 25:26And you know what, I was Synchronowski.
- 25:29We didn't see him in the spring. You didn't.
- 25:32Interesting. Of course you didn't.
- 25:34You know. Yeah, yeah, we really didn't
- 25:37throw that last practice, but I'm really interested to see
- 25:42what the offense looks like, if there's any rush for him early.
- 25:47But I, you know, I think he'll be fine.
- 25:49And I'd be more worried if he was like a sophomore or
- 25:54something like that, you know, haven't practiced and all that
- 25:57stuff. He's been through it.
- 25:58He's 49 and six and he knows how to win.
- 26:02And yeah, so I so those are just a couple things.
- 26:05Running backs interesting too, I think far.
- 26:07Further down the depth chart you mean.
- 26:09Yeah, just I think Moulton's the guy.
- 26:12But interested in TJ Washington. I'm interested in doll.
- 26:17If you watch that video clip, boy, the McNeil Kid looks a lot
- 26:21like a guy who wore 25 a few years back, didn't he?
- 26:24With the little shimmy to his his run, the McNeil Kid look
- 26:28like Aqua Wadley. Yeah, he was unbelievable.
- 26:32So Moulton the guy though, right?
- 26:35He would, don't you? Don't you expect him to win the
- 26:37spot? Yep, Yep, I do.
- 26:42Full disclosure, and you'll probably remember this, I was on
- 26:45the the Kamari Moulton bandwagon last year and then Dale Johnson
- 26:50showed up in the second-half of that first game of the year and
- 26:52said. Not so fast because he was
- 26:57suspended the first half, correct?
- 26:59He was suspended by by his teammates the first half.
- 27:03And that's, you know, and that's, that's what happened.
- 27:07And the leadership committee got him and and the rest, as they
- 27:11say, is history. And he grew up a whole lot that
- 27:13year and fulfilled all that potential that I think we all
- 27:18saw him haven't since he arrived on campus.
- 27:21Yeah, and there's some sharps out there that are actually
- 27:24picking him to be Offensive Rookie of the Year with the
- 27:27Steelers. Price keeps coming down.
- 27:29So we'll see where that goes. All right, Am I optimistic in
- 27:32saying this that that there's, I don't recall as much depth in
- 27:36the wide receiver room as we've legitimate depth?
- 27:39I mean, there's always been guys there bodies there.
- 27:42But when I look at the wide receivers, I, I think that this
- 27:44is, I think there's a reason for optimism, Tom.
- 27:48I do too. I think there's there's
- 27:51definitely more talent in that room than there's been in in
- 27:55quite some time, maybe since the, you know, Tyrone, Tracy
- 27:59Smith, Marsette, Brandon Smith. And I think there's more depth
- 28:03there right now than there was at that time.
- 28:06Just I could. Go, I feel comfortable like 7 or
- 28:108 deep. And, and I think they're, I
- 28:16think they're really talented. You know, KJ Parker's, they got
- 28:18to watch. He's the one that's getting all
- 28:20the buzz and everybody I talked to and even the the guys on
- 28:24defense, they're like, yeah, the Parker kid, He's always open.
- 28:28He's always open. So keep an eye on him.
- 28:31We saw what Gil could do. I think Vandersby will be
- 28:34better. They've just got a lot of and
- 28:38Seth Anderson, when he's healthy and if he could stay healthy, he
- 28:42was the best guy this spring when he was healthy, you know,
- 28:45because he was healthy the spring.
- 28:46So got all of his reps and you know, you talk to anybody around
- 28:50the program and they'll tell you he's he was the most consistent
- 28:52guy the entire spring. So he's a guy that's going to
- 28:56factor in. I just wonder how they're going
- 28:58to keep all those mouths. Hats.
- 29:00That's it. Yeah.
- 29:01Well, and ferrets. He went out of his way to
- 29:03mention Vanderzee on Big 10 Network when he was in Las Vegas
- 29:07sitting down at the set. So there's, you know, there's
- 29:09there's clearly something there in his mind going to be
- 29:12fascinating to with shakes out what next Saturday is that kids
- 29:17day? Did I see that?
- 29:18Yeah, yeah. The 9th is Kids Day, so we've
- 29:21got Media Day next Friday and then we've got we've got Kids
- 29:25Day, so it's here and then the Big 10 networks there on the
- 29:2911th. Saw that Bing bang boom.
- 29:32Yeah. So it's like here we're going to
- 29:34give you all this stuff overload and then we're and then for and
- 29:38then good luck waiting for 21 days.
- 29:41Right. And that's when we'll get a
- 29:42depth chart is after that 21 days, right or leading up to a
- 29:45very late in that process. That week, yeah, that week, that
- 29:48week, game week, that Monday, we'll get a depth chart finally.
- 29:51So that will be interesting. But you know what, We can kind
- 29:55of maybe draw some conclusions at Kids Day because we'll see
- 29:59what they're out there doing. So I think that's going to be
- 30:02that makes Kids Day even more intriguing to me is we're going
- 30:05to be able to kind of at least maybe suddenly a little bit just
- 30:09draw a depth chart up and could be completely wrong by the time
- 30:14we get to August 30th, but at least we'll, hey, there's
- 30:19nothing wrong with us doing a little speculation, right?
- 30:21Absolutely. Well, let's speculate on this.
- 30:23Have you heard of there's is anybody in a walking boot or
- 30:27anything like that? Any injuries that you've heard
- 30:29of Tama that you're keeping an eye?
- 30:30On yeah, haven't heard any good then yeah, there are only two
- 30:34practices in right. It's pretty good so far.
- 30:38But yeah, it just seems like everything you know they're
- 30:42they're not even in like full pads yet.
- 30:44So it's I think today or tomorrow is that I think they
- 30:47got to do 3 practices maybe and then they can get in full pads.
- 30:51So once we once we get through the Big 10 being on site, will
- 30:54will you have any media available avails, will the
- 30:57coordinators be made available in that three-week period?
- 31:01There might be. In the past we've had that, but
- 31:04in the past we haven't. So it's it's kind of hit and
- 31:07miss If we'll get Tim and Phil and Lavar maybe, but I'm hopeful
- 31:13that we will. But I don't know that anything
- 31:15is guaranteed at this point. Good stuff, Tom Cake or at
- 31:18hawkeyereport.com. Follow it all at on three
- 31:20media.com. Tom, thank you.
- 31:23Appreciate you coming on. Yep Yep, talk to you next week,
- 31:26Tom Caker. We take a look at the Hawks.
- 31:29So this is some breaking news ESPN, the NFL blockbuster
- 31:32blockbuster billion dollar deal. The red zone will then move to
- 31:39ESPN. Well, not ESPN, but one of them.
- 31:42Official announcement coming next week, but it'd been rumored
- 31:44for a while that the red zone and ESPN and we're moving
- 31:49towards somewhat of an agreement.
- 31:51The NFL Network's got to be a part of it as well, I would
- 31:53assume. So some changes afoot when it
- 31:57comes to those two behemoths. We'll take your time out.
- 31:59Come back. Mitch Holtis, the voice of the
- 32:02Kansas City Chiefs training camp reports.
- 32:05Chiefs training camp reports all August long brought to us by our
- 32:09friends at Papa John's. Holtis next Miller and Condon
- 32:12Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 32:16Welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio network.
- 32:18Wherever listening in the state of Iowa.
- 32:19Grateful that you are. We take you until 2:00.
- 32:22Mitch Holtis is the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs daily Chiefs
- 32:26training camp reports sponsored by our friends at Papa John's
- 32:29throughout the state of Iowa. The Donaldsons here running the
- 32:32places in central Iowa headquarters in Johnston.
- 32:36Hello. How are you, Mitch Holtis Good
- 32:38to talk to you before we hear from Chet Mcduffie, who I I
- 32:41would look. I'd love him in the Broncos
- 32:43uniform. I think he's that good of a
- 32:45player there. Drew Tranquil apparently maybe
- 32:49not as bad as some were speculating on X, believe it or
- 32:52not. There was some people a little
- 32:53bit over the top, but it's a back injury, but not significant
- 32:57according to Coach Reed. Is that what I'm reading that
- 33:00right? Just saw him.
- 33:01I literally saw Tranquil literally 50 seconds ago.
- 33:06Yep. And of course they're going to
- 33:07tell you I'm OK I'm OK. But he wouldn't.
- 33:11I wouldn't have seen him 50 seconds ago if this was like,
- 33:15you know, life threatening. I don't know what's on an axe
- 33:17already, but I just kind of get perturbed where people want to
- 33:20jump the gun and put something out there and click bait it.
- 33:23But he just made an excellent interception against Kelsey,
- 33:27actually very athletic and then wasn't that long after.
- 33:31And I don't think he did on the interception that came off the
- 33:35field, but I think he'd be out for a little bit.
- 33:38But I, I mean, just saw him, man.
- 33:41So he wasn't like an excruciating pain getting some
- 33:44kind of acupuncture. So I think he's, I think he'd be
- 33:47OK. Good stuff.
- 33:48Yeah, Andy Reid said there was a back injury late in practice.
- 33:52Anyways, let's move on. You know, one of those guys.
- 33:55This is a good spot for me to do this because you mentioned pay
- 33:58pill. Pill I mean you get.
- 33:59Credit. You get credit for this one
- 34:00because I was trying to think the Mount Rushmore's full.
- 34:04We've done that. There's only four spots.
- 34:05Yeah. And I'm thinking, have you been,
- 34:08have you been to Mount Rushmore? No, I'm well, yeah, you know, in
- 34:12the distance. I haven't been like to it
- 34:14actually. OK, Yeah.
- 34:15Well, not far from there, there is a Crazy Horse monument for
- 34:18the, you know, the outstanding Native American warrior.
- 34:22So brilliant. And this feels like, like
- 34:25Mcduffie's there, like, you know, it's like the next not far
- 34:29from from the Mount Rushmore, but deserving his own place or
- 34:33who's the next Mount Rushmore? That's where I'm going to go.
- 34:35And you talked me into this man. He's a hell of a player.
- 34:38You're a hockey guy. Yeah, hockey guy.
- 34:41Your sister is so important. But I think the same way about
- 34:44Patrick. Suzanne the second who I'm not
- 34:46going to, you know, soft gardener.
- 34:48We talk about all the great corners.
- 34:49Mcguffey doesn't get enough credit.
- 34:51But it was interesting because when I talked to Macduff, in his
- 34:55three years, he has seen this defense grow kind of underrated,
- 35:00especially in scoring defense, but he's seen it grow.
- 35:03And then the whole secret sauce to the Spags defense.
- 35:07Two years ago when I said there's just something special
- 35:10with this group of guys coming here and communications been on
- 35:13point, the work ethics been on point, and I think everybody has
- 35:16bought into this system and ready to roll.
- 35:19For you, the ability to move back inside some if you have to
- 35:22play the slot or play outside, or the fact that Spags like to
- 35:26shift it around. What about adding more guys that
- 35:28can play so that allows you to be able to move around?
- 35:31I love it. I love it.
- 35:32I mean when you talk about. Spags defense, all you think
- 35:35about is different guys playing in different positions and the
- 35:38more guys you get that can do more, I think just makes the
- 35:42defense even more unique because now you got guys that can play
- 35:45corn or nickel, different guys in different positions doing
- 35:48different things. And I feel we're going to give a
- 35:50lot of headache, a lot of quarterbacks, a lot of
- 35:52headaches. That's what they got to get
- 35:55Christian Fulton on the field soon.
- 35:57But if Macduff moves inside, he rushes from as a slot corner
- 36:01like an edge rusher like Nick Benito.
- 36:04What he does and does well for the Broncos, Mcduffie does that
- 36:07as a DB. It's the best I've ever seen at
- 36:09it. He told me he actually trains
- 36:11that way and watches edge rushers that people talk about.
- 36:15His lack of interceptions can, but he's had 113 solo tackles in
- 36:19three years as a corner. That's unheard of.
- 36:22Then 14 passes, defense and quarterback hits and hurries.
- 36:27He if he doesn't get to Brock Purdy on 3rd down in regulation
- 36:31Super Bowl 58, that Chiefs don't win that game.
- 36:34So anyway, there's a lot to Trent Mcduffie.
- 36:37More than interceptions. No, couldn't agree with you
- 36:39more. And you know what I'm hearing,
- 36:41and this is the second straight day I've heard this when it
- 36:43comes to Spags defense. Chris Jones pointed out how so
- 36:46many guys are asked to no move around and play so many
- 36:49positions and do so seemingly. And I just heard Mcduffie say
- 36:52the same thing. This must be a product of Spags
- 36:56defense, right? That you're going to be asked to
- 36:57play different positions and you have to be ready.
- 37:01And you have to recruit or draft to your system.
- 37:04When Justin Herbert comes to the line in Week 1 on September 5th
- 37:07in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he's looking at a lot of stuff, but
- 37:10he's looking at personnel. Where's this guy?
- 37:13Where's that guy? And now all of a sudden it's
- 37:15taking him more time to look. Oh my gosh, he's over here.
- 37:18Why is Mcduffie here? Why is our men who here?
- 37:20And why is Chris Jones here? And so he has to process all
- 37:23that. And the Chiefs do it better than
- 37:25anybody in the league. But you've got to find the
- 37:27talent to be able to do that. I call it the Industrial
- 37:30Revolution defense. It's interchangeable parts.
- 37:32No doubt. I want to save a minute to talk
- 37:35about a guy. I'm sure you've crossed paths
- 37:37with him when he was the radio voice of the Raiders late in his
- 37:39career. Brett Musburger honored
- 37:42yesterday he's going into the Hall of Fame.
- 37:45I believe it's the Pete Rozelle Award, if I have that right.
- 37:47If I don't, my apologies. But just your thoughts on a
- 37:51guy's meant so much to the NFL. Going back to the NFL today on
- 37:55CBS, what a legendary show that was.
- 37:58Just a comment or two on Musburger, I think.
- 38:00Long overdue gaining entrance into the Hall of Fame.
- 38:04Yeah, you're looking live, right?
- 38:05That's. True.
- 38:06So many games started. His versatility, I think was
- 38:11key. Speaking of versatility and
- 38:13players, it's the same for announcers and to be able to do
- 38:17different sports and have big moments and capture the moments.
- 38:21And he also would take, I think the research, but not overdo it.
- 38:24He he would just the great ones are able to to Zing the moment,
- 38:28so to speak, but not overdo it. And so that's a that's a, that's
- 38:33a learned trade man. And he was really good at.
- 38:35It no doubt the Donaldsons are really good at pizza.
- 38:38Let's spend our final minute with them.
- 38:41Well, you mentioned Tom Brady yesterday.
- 38:42I'll go Jared Wiley, he's #12 for the Chiefs, the second year
- 38:45tight end of TCU. That's your 12.
- 38:48But I'll stay with Gretzky, although Jerry Tiller is now in
- 38:50our camp. I'm not sorry.
- 38:52X Charger and check charger Raider, but Tillery's 99.
- 38:57So it's 1299. Think about that.
- 38:59So let's stay with Gretzky, the 1299 for this medium
- 39:02cheeseburger pizza, which is man value.
- 39:04You talk about value in getting a draft pick.
- 39:06It's value in getting a pizza with our guys, the Donaldsons
- 39:09guys and gals at Papa John's. A busy weekend for some
- 39:12families. Make the dinner easy.
- 39:14Papa John's good stuff, Mitch, we'll talk to you on Monday.
- 39:16Appreciate it. I love these training camp
- 39:19reports. We do them every day until you
- 39:20guys hit the road, etcetera. So thank you for the week.
- 39:23Talk to you next week. Thank you for thank you for the
- 39:25assist on Mcduffie all year. You got it, pal.
- 39:27Thank you. Good to hear from you.
- 39:29Mitch Holt is the voice of the Kansas Kansas City Chiefs.
- 39:32And yeah, Mcduffie. Mcduffie is a tackling machine.
- 39:34He's a hell of a player. This was a team that was all
- 39:37about the offense, right? But it was the defense.
- 39:40Once they, you know, took that next step, seemingly, OK,
- 39:42Patrick Mahomes has something to do with the offense.
- 39:45But the defense came along with them.
- 39:46It was no longer a team that was just relied on, you know,
- 39:49outscoring everybody. It's a legitimate defense and
- 39:52have been for the last few years.
- 39:54Mike Palm will kick off our number 2 Eugene repay covers
- 39:57Iowa State. They had a media availability
- 39:59yesterday. Couple of the assistant coaches.
- 40:02We'll talk to Eugene before we get out of here at 2.
- 40:04Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 40:07Appreciate you being with me here on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 40:10Network.
