- 0:00Where do I even start?
- 0:01Okay, so this conversation, it needs no introduction in the sense that it is
- 0:06full of so much juicy relationship, money, drama.
- 0:11And I just, I'm not sure how much to say here.
- 0:15All I want you to know is this conversation is fascinating, shocking.
- 0:20I swore a lot.
- 0:22So I
- 0:22apologize in advance if you are listening with children in the car.
- 0:26We actually decided to not
- 0:27beep a lot of it out because it's kind of part of the story if I'm being honest.
- 0:31I'm not proud of
- 0:32how much I'm swearing at the moment, going to try and rein that in, but I will say I think this
- 0:37conversation needed a few F-bombs and a few S-bombs.
- 0:42Anyway, you know what I mean.
- 0:43Potentially one of
- 0:44the most wild stories we've had on the podcast.
- 0:46I think we're going to have to get Holly back on
- 0:47to hear about the second property disaster that happened, as well as honestly hearing more about
- 0:53how we can look to protect ourselves from these types of things happening.
- 0:57I will also say if you
- 0:58listen to this and you think I know someone else who has the most outrageous story that's kind of
- 1:02along these lines, I don't know what it is about relationships and money and things just going
- 1:10absolutely tits up but fascinating.
- 1:12So if you'd like to put yourself forward or someone else you
- 1:14know, please get in touch because I think not only is it fascinating and stunning entertainment but
- 1:21it's actually really good in terms of learning as well.
- 1:23So thank you so much to Holly for being
- 1:25just such a good sport and sharing this so openly.
- 1:29Enjoy the episode.
- 1:31Welcome to another episode of
- 1:33the Property Podcast.
- 1:35I am loving this series.
- 1:37It's so fun to be able to talk about a different
- 1:39asset class.
- 1:40I mean, it's been years that we've spoken about the stock market.
- 1:43So to be able to
- 1:44really dive into property, I'm loving.
- 1:46We just wanted to share a message from our partners,
- 1:48B and Z who know that home ownership is not a straight line.
- 1:52Sometimes life just does throw
- 1:53you curveballs and there's actually nothing you can do about it.
- 1:56You just have to remember that
- 1:58they're all about supporting you through the hard stuff, not just the highlights.
- 2:01So if you are in a
- 2:02position where you're having a total meltdown or something's not going to plan, just remember that
- 2:06the sooner that you talk to the bank, the more options that you will have.
- 2:09And it is never too
- 2:11late, no matter how dire things feel, to reach out.
- 2:13They are always there to help and not judge.
- 2:15So whether you're at the start of your journey or you're rebuilding, whatever has gone wrong,
- 2:20remember that BNZ has got the tools and the people and they're ready to help you find
- 2:24a way.
- 2:24Thank you so much to BNZ for empowering this podcast and let's get into it.
- 2:32Holly, I'm so excited to have you on the podcast.
- 2:34I wish you could be in London, like in the studio with me.
- 2:37Same.
- 2:38Thank you so much for having me.
- 2:39I wish we could have done this together.
- 2:40Okay.
- 2:41I'm like, there's so many things I want to talk to you about and there's so many things
- 2:45that I am quite excited to go into quite a bit of detail on.
- 2:48But I thought what might be kind of fun and random
- 2:51and also like slightly childish.
- 2:53For anyone that doesn't know you,
- 2:55can we just pretend you're doing like, I don't know,
- 2:57a stand-up introduction in front of 20 people you don't know.
- 3:01What sort of things would you say about yourself?
- 3:02Like honestly, it can be really boring.
- 3:05Like how old you are, where you live.
- 3:07Yeah, just a little mini introduction.
- 3:09I am 30 years old, about to turn 31.
- 3:13living in Auckland in a city for the first time in my life with my best friend who is also called
- 3:17Holly fun fact I've been in central Otago for 10 years um prior to now so very small town vibe
- 3:25compared to Auckland city life was in Dunedin before that studying grew up in a very small
- 3:31farming town did you ever grow up thinking I really want to be a business owner never I didn't
- 3:36even think that was a possible I didn't grow up thinking I was going to be a lawyer like I grew
- 3:39up in a small farming town I was working in shearing sheds and dagging gangs I mean what
- 3:44even is that it's gross it's like where they clean the sheep's bums and they're called dags
- 3:50yeah so I'm like the farming girl like corporate life lawyer life was just not in my vicinity um
- 3:57or even in my mind growing up like I didn't think that was a possibility like it wasn't even until
- 4:02seventh form in high school kind of near the end that I was like like what am I gonna do
- 4:07You went to university and studied law.
- 4:09Correct.
- 4:10I actually was really struggling.
- 4:12Like I was not the smart kid at school by any means.
- 4:15Like I was not the student who was studying.
- 4:18I wasn't, you know, worried about grades.
- 4:20Like I obviously did okay, but I was definitely not school focused or education focused in the slightest.
- 4:25Like I was, you know, what parties can we go to this weekend?
- 4:29So good.
- 4:30In seventh form we had I think one of those like careers people who like you can do a personality
- 4:35test and it's like a careers advisor and they give you a whole bunch of options on like what
- 4:39you could go do and went and did that and one of the options was law and I thought oh you know why
- 4:44not so went in very very naively to just university life from not being a student who studied or was
- 4:52trying for merit or excellence or anything like that to then going to try get into law at Otago
- 4:57go university yeah to get into first year I was very naive I was still not the studier the smart
- 5:04kid like I didn't know we had textbooks we were meant to read textbooks all year and I found out
- 5:08like a week before our exams that we had all these textbooks and readings that we'd meant to be doing
- 5:13like so funny I'll try and try my best and if I get in it's meant to be and if I don't it's not
- 5:20meant to be and I'll deal with that then and you got it and I'm like quite impressed not reading
- 5:24one textbook yeah yeah okay so you've had the most outrageous experience with with I shouldn't
- 5:31laugh because there's actually nothing funny about this story at all we can laugh now I mean I don't
- 5:36even know how long would have taken you to get to the point of being able to laugh but I think for
- 5:41me it would be a solid five years how old were you when you bought your first house what was the
- 5:46situation at the time what made you decide to buy can you just set the scene for everyone yeah I
- 5:52I mean, I'm really bad at quick math.
- 5:53So can somebody work this out for me if I'm about to turn 31?
- 5:56And it was in 2017.
- 6:00Is it like 21, 22?
- 6:01You were a baby.
- 6:02Yeah, like a baby.
- 6:03And I was a baby.
- 6:05Like it was a really cool opportunity that was given to me and my partner at the time.
- 6:10So we had been in a relationship, I think, to be fair, by like six or six-ish years at that point.
- 6:17So we were together all through high school, together all through uni.
- 6:19Oh, my God.
- 6:20So how old were you when you met him?
- 6:22Like 17.
- 6:23Wow.
- 6:24Okay.
- 6:24Right.
- 6:25So you'd been together from school.
- 6:27This was now university.
- 6:29You were maybe
- 6:2921, 22.
- 6:30You'd been together for six years.
- 6:32Were you still at uni?
- 6:33Yep.
- 6:34So I'd gone through all of university.
- 6:36We're still together.
- 6:38I, when I left home at high school,
- 6:39I never went back home.
- 6:40So we like moved in together.
- 6:42He was based in Queenstown.
- 6:43We moved
- 6:43in together then.
- 6:44So I never went back to my parents' home, I guess is what I'm trying to
- 6:47say there so you were a quite young but also married couple in a way it was almost like you're
- 6:54quite a mature relationship for the age you're at but we did stop and have that conversation I like
- 6:58I remember specifically saying this before I was applying for jobs and things like are we together
- 7:02out of habit or are we together like because we're choosing to be together like not out of oh like we
- 7:07just started dating and then kind of ended up together because I feel like a lot of people do
- 7:11that as well like you end up in a relationship and you just stay there and then all of a sudden you
- 7:14do these chapters kind of just going through the motions without ever really stopping and going
- 7:18did I actually want this like did we actually choose to do this so I remember having those
- 7:23conversations before I went in applied for jobs and things like that because I was like I don't
- 7:27want to just come here if it's not actually what we both want so we had those conversations it was
- 7:32like no we're both on the same page it must have been third year that we had that conversation
- 7:35because at the end of or towards the end of third year was when I first got my first law job
- 7:41and got like a clerkship in Queenstown
- 7:44and got my first taste of what a lawyer actually did in their day
- 7:48and what was involved and met lawyers for the first time
- 7:50and sort of got some experience in terms of working a nine to five,
- 7:54not working at an orchard or a lolly shop.
- 7:57I did a lolly shop stint in Queenstown as well.
- 7:59Like everyone knows that lolly shop.
- 8:00Wasn't that remarkable?
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:02Absolutely.
- 8:03So dangerous.
- 8:04Okay, for anyone that is not from New Zealand,
- 8:07this is the most iconic sweet shop.
- 8:08like you walk in and it's kind of every child's dream there are sweets all over the walls there's
- 8:14oh my god I would kill for a jersey caramel right now so good right oh my god do you know I've
- 8:18actually got chocolate in the office next door I'm actually gonna go get it that's how much I'm
- 8:22craving sugar can I go grab my chocolate this is so unprofessional I'll be right back this is so
- 8:26good so this is also quite iconic for me I will say so Vic brought this back as a gift for the
- 8:32curved tank oh you won't believe it she's got Whittaker's I was gonna say Whittaker's it's got
- 8:38to be Whittaker's so this is like a New Zealand specialty it's like our best chocolate anyway I've
- 8:44got a dark almond 62% stunning okay right this is perfect I actually think I need sweet treats for
- 8:50the story okay so was it scary to be you know 23 or whatever you were and be thinking this is the
- 8:58person I'm going to be with forever this is our home this is my job because it's quite young to
- 9:02be in that situation I'm only 34 and I'm doing that yeah no I'm like shocked that I thought that
- 9:09that was normal and that I didn't think it was weird at the time like even now I'm like oh my
- 9:13god I can't imagine like going through those motions right this moment but at that time it
- 9:17felt normal and I was focused on like oh I'll become a lawyer and even then I was like right
- 9:22once I'd sort of locked in that I was like my goal was to like work and become a partner one day and
- 9:26like that's sort of what will be my life and hopefully have a family and yeah I didn't bend
- 9:30an eyelid at the end but now I'm like oh my god you're a baby get the kick out like what are you
- 9:34doing so you've moved your life things are going well you're happy you've got a great job amazing
- 9:40tick tick tick everything's good let's talk about how this property opportunity came up what was the
- 9:45opportunity was it a plan did you think okay right it's time for us to buy or did the opportunity
- 9:51just fall into your both of your laps so the opportunity came through a family member of his
- 9:56so we were very fortunate in that position where they were very much involved in the property
- 10:02world in Queenstown and things like that and said here's an opportunity do you want to take it so my
- 10:07partner had he was a builder and my family were builders and also so the opportunity sort of came
- 10:14about and and amongst all of that happening as well I actually also started a side hustle which
- 10:18might have been like the first step into entrepreneurship and the reason I'm bringing
- 10:23that up is that did also go towards the build and things like that as well as this other business
- 10:29that I did have but yes so the opportunity came up it was sort of a no-brainer we were in that
- 10:34phase of life maybe six months after the opportunity came up he proposed so he went from partner to
- 10:41fiance.
- 10:42Hold on.
- 10:43How old were you?
- 10:44It was 2018.
- 10:45How old am I in 2018?
- 10:48Eight years ago.
- 10:49So 23?
- 10:50Yeah.
- 10:50Oh my God.
- 10:52Wow.
- 10:52That's so young.
- 10:53So young at the time.
- 10:54But at the time it felt right.
- 10:56Because you've been together for seven-ish years by that point.
- 10:59It was the happiest I've ever been.
- 11:00I was like working as a lawyer.
- 11:02I had this side business selling cakes.
- 11:04Like life was good.
- 11:06We
- 11:06were now starting to build this house.
- 11:09It did take us two years to build the house.
- 11:11So obviously we
- 11:11were building it ourselves like for two years of our lives we didn't actually have a life like it
- 11:15was a really hard grind I was working full-time as a lawyer I was up at 4am making cakes and the
- 11:21weekends as well when I wasn't at the house helping in whatever way I could in terms of the build but
- 11:26we were grinding I guess that's the kind of the picture I'm trying to paint like it's not like we
- 11:30did this house and you know we were given money or anything like that it was here's an opportunity
- 11:35we were definitely given an opportunity and I'll never refute that like we would absolutely provide
- 11:40an opportunity and in through a family member of his but we were grinding like we were there every
- 11:46weekend every night every spare hour for two years it took to build this house when it came to the
- 11:52actual finances who whose name was it in how was it set up yeah how were you funding the project
- 11:58can you just run through a bit more detail around the actual setup of that yep so the initial build
- 12:05was through my partner.
- 12:06So my name wasn't on it at all,
- 12:09which some people might go, that's really risky.
- 12:12It was in his name and his lending,
- 12:14but we paid everything together.
- 12:16So he never put in more than I did.
- 12:18We split the lending.
- 12:20So we were splitting our rent 50
- 12:21because we were obviously paying rent
- 12:22while we were paying the loan as well.
- 12:24So we were splitting the rent 50-50.
- 12:26We were splitting the loan 50-50.
- 12:28We were splitting all of our costs equally.
- 12:32Every bill that we got, we both paid half of that as well.
- 12:35It was in his name.
- 12:36Now that's a risk, but given my background and my knowledge, I knew I was fine.
- 12:40I knew without it being in my name, I was still legally entitled to that property.
- 12:44It was 50-50
- 12:45in terms of relationship property law.
- 12:47We were in a de facto relationship.
- 12:49I didn't have any
- 12:50concerns there by it not essentially being in my name because I knew it was legally my house as
- 12:55well.
- 12:56So this is different in other parts of the world, but in New Zealand, is it after two years
- 13:00or three years?
- 13:01Three years.
- 13:02Yeah.
- 13:03Thank God.
- 13:03Cause two is quite quick.
- 13:05Three years, you
- 13:07officially become almost in the same way as when you get married and you kind of, everything is
- 13:12sort of fair game.
- 13:13It's the same thing in New Zealand.
- 13:15Whereas I know that's quite unique.
- 13:16Other parts of the world, it's not like that, but you basically knew, cause obviously you had a
- 13:20legal background that you were fine and that there was never going to be an issue in terms of who
- 13:26owns it yeah so you were engaged had a beautiful home everything was good well not quite this is
- 13:33where it's interesting so we were literally maybe one month away from finishing our build we were
- 13:41living downstairs I think all that we had left to do was maybe carpet like windows were in walls
- 13:46were painted kitchen was in and then my mum was meant to be coming for dinner this night and um
- 13:53I got a text that day at work from my partner being like,
- 13:55is your mum still coming for dinner?
- 13:57And I was like, yeah, why is that?
- 13:58And he's like, oh, I don't think she should.
- 14:00I was like, okay, that's really weird.
- 14:02And I just had this gut feeling.
- 14:04I was like, oh my God, we're over.
- 14:08And I actually rang my sister-in-law and was like,
- 14:11I just got this text from my partner.
- 14:14And he just said, can your mum not come to dinner?
- 14:17I was like, I reckon we're done.
- 14:18And she's like, there's no way.
- 14:19Like, there is just no way.
- 14:21And sorry, is this the sister?
- 14:22this is your fiancee sister no this is my brother's wife oh so at this point how far through
- 14:30the wedding planning every paying for the wedding okay so this is September 2019 we were getting
- 14:35married November 2019 so we're two months away from the wedding so we we had like the venue locked
- 14:40in we had the food like catering locked in the photographer we even had a videographer invites
- 14:45have been sent like the wedding was locked in we had all the wine sitting in our garage so yeah
- 14:51we're getting married November 2019 but in so two months before yeah I got this text while I was at
- 14:57work it was a Monday saying can your mum not come to dinner and I was like oh my god and it's just
- 15:03it was not and then so I went home that night and my partner had cheated on me my fiance had cheated
- 15:08on me and I remember just like dropping to the floor you see it in the movies and you're like
- 15:15does that happen in real life it happened like it was literally like like the whole breath just
- 15:20taken out of your lungs being like oh my god the last thing that you expected and I think that's
- 15:25the thing like if you asked anybody at the time you know sometimes you're like I called that
- 15:29nobody called it like nobody saw this coming I didn't see it coming no one saw it coming small
- 15:35town it was the talk of the town for months and months and months like nobody saw it coming it's
- 15:40definitely not one of those ones where you're like no we kind of knew that was going to happen the
- 15:44whole way along it was definitely one that was like holy heck and it was like you're getting
- 15:48married in two months like what it literally broke me and it broke it broke me but also looking back
- 15:57it broke my heart because initially my reaction was we can make this work and that was never me
- 16:03like I was never the girl that was like if a guy had treated me that way or could do something like
- 16:08that I was like I am done like I know my worth I would walk away I would never stand by somebody
- 16:13that did that to me and in the initial moment it was like oh no we can make this work and
- 16:20thankfully he was like oh no like I've done this and he didn't beg for forgiveness immediately
- 16:26it came don't worry it came it always comes as females we always know that it comes just not
- 16:31but it didn't come at first what the yeah no so he got caught up in this little love of fear bubble
- 16:38wait he was dating the yeah like straight away so they he was like staying in her house he brought
- 16:43her to our home like the home that we were still living in together no that is absolutely i hope
- 16:49if there's any children in the car please block their ears that is absolutely fucked like to bring
- 16:56when you're about to get married holy shit in what context i was away the for the day with like
- 17:03some girlfriends are so lucky at the time i had the best girlfriends around me like girlfriends
- 17:07it I mean everyone just needs a good girl group right to be like you can get through anything
- 17:12they're the real loves of your life aren't they yeah literally um so I was out for the day and
- 17:17then they just obviously decided to have I don't know drinks and an event at our house so she was
- 17:22at our house so were our mutual friends as well and I got home and they one of our friends like
- 17:29it was a mutual friend of ours said oh Holly I don't think you should go in there and I said
- 17:33why it's my home like that's literally where I'm going to sleep and they're like oh no she's there
- 17:39and I just remember thinking all of you suck as well like the fact that you're okay with this and
- 17:45can stand by this exit like absolutely not my people did you storm in and say like get the
- 17:52fuck out of my hands no I no gosh no I left I was very firm in that I will take the high road
- 17:59till death like I am not going to give a reaction I'm not going to be response like to me no response
- 18:04was the best response and I was like that's the one thing I can control in this dynamic like they
- 18:07can do whatever they want to do no one can ever say anything about me if I give no reaction like
- 18:13I will hold my head high I'm not going to throw anything I'm not going to scream I'm not going to
- 18:17call you names I'm not going to call her any names she didn't owe me anything she didn't do anything
- 18:22to me you know like she knew that he was engaged and getting married in two months and just build
- 18:26her house with somebody but she didn't owe me anything so I left and even after I left I got
- 18:32then proceeded to get sent and I've got screenshots so um videos from the girl and her friend drinking
- 18:39our wedding wine what kind of sadistic weird person does that honestly I've got screenshots
- 18:44because I'm like that you're mean like you have to live with that for the rest of your life that
- 18:49you did something like that I did nothing to you and you are sitting there in my house with my
- 18:54fiance drinking my wedding wine being like haha like we're with him and I'm like have him by that
- 19:00point I'm like he is your like I am done like nobody who was meant for me would ever do that
- 19:06to me in my life so I'd like definitely done a shift by that point initially it was a heartbroken
- 19:13and I was like I would have taken you back by this point like and it probably only took two to
- 19:17three weeks but by this point I was like well and truly done and it was you are not my person and
- 19:23you were not like we were never meant to be and this was like the universe of whatever stepping
- 19:28in being like you were going to make a serious mistake if you marry this man and we need to
- 19:32stop this drastically before you go down that path and this is the only way to do it and isn't
- 19:38that absolutely wild they also then because I had my cake business at the house at that point as
- 19:44well right and I had a big calendar like managing my orders and on the wedding day and I've got a
- 19:49screenshot of like I've got a photo of this as well we're at oh on the wedding date of what was
- 19:54meant to be our wedding day so they wrote over that that night too and I was like you are mean
- 19:59you're mean girls and good luck to you have him have the life I don't want to I'm out leave me
- 20:05alone please Jesus okay so right so that happened plot twist firstly I'm really sorry I know that
- 20:12you're over it now but that is like definitely something no one should ever experience although
- 20:17So thank God you didn't marry him.
- 20:19Thank God.
- 20:20So the relationship obviously ended at that point.
- 20:23He was trying to get you back.
- 20:24Yes.
- 20:25I think initially he was just going through some stuff and that was a distraction.
- 20:30And he was like, oh, this is so fun.
- 20:32And then maybe after, you know, the first, you know, everything's fun when it's new.
- 20:36And then maybe like, it was probably like four weeks later, he was like, oh no, I'm
- 20:39so done with her after all that stuff that had happened.
- 20:41And he was literally begging me to come back.
- 20:45because it was by the time, so what was meant to be our wedding,
- 20:48I left and went to Australia with my mum and I was like getting phone calls,
- 20:52being like, you know, we're meant to be getting married and take me back
- 20:57and, you know, please forgive me and all those types of things.
- 21:01And so I think at that point it wasn't a financial driver.
- 21:04I think he genuinely realised he made a mistake and then was like,
- 21:09I'll do anything to get you back.
- 21:10Like I was having like 13 missed phone calls a day.
- 21:14my family were getting messages you know my mum was getting messages my dad was getting messages
- 21:19friends were getting messages it was wild no one can come back from that you cannot come back from
- 21:24that or like and also he did kind of come with the approach of like just forgive me right now
- 21:28let's move on and I'm like no I don't think you get understand like you do something like that
- 21:32you don't just move like it's not a thing where you're like okay it's done and the next day we're
- 21:37good and I don't know if anyone can ever truly come back from that and if you do I think you
- 21:41need a lot of therapy and a lot of work before you decide whether you actually could ever move
- 21:47forward from a situation like that.
- 21:48Me personally, absolutely not.
- 21:50What was the legal situation when
- 21:52you separated?
- 21:53And can we talk about what unfolded once you decided, right, we're definitely separated.
- 22:00Now we have to deal with obviously the fallout financially from the wedding, but also
- 22:04we have this shared asset together.
- 22:07What happened?
- 22:08Yeah.
- 22:09So you get no deposits back when you cancel
- 22:11the wedding two months in advance and everything you've paid so say goodbye to that money by the
- 22:15way did you try to say my fiancee oh my god no I was mortified I had to get my mum to contact all
- 22:22the vendors and be like sorry the wedding's not going going ahead and just put my head I was like
- 22:26tapping out that's not even worth chasing because I knew like you know that and then I tried to take
- 22:31a kind of real realistic approach and said well let's get the property valued here's our debt
- 22:37we'll split the equity 50-50 and I had some real estate agents come through bearing in mind this
- 22:43property's in central Otago and 2019 between 2017 and 2019 everything had started trending up like
- 22:50central Otago has always kind of been a nice area but things had started going up drastically
- 22:56around that point and in terms of the home we'd sort of built and things like that like the
- 23:01property valuation came in quite high at that point.
- 23:04So you'd made money?
- 23:05Yeah definitely like
- 23:07substantial money but then came the conversation of well that's a valuation that's not true and
- 23:14I just said that verbally and sort of left it at that and was sort of like that's how I intended
- 23:17to approach it but we needed to clarify what our debt was because we'd obviously done a lot
- 23:22ourselves we hadn't sort of had clear breakdowns from the building company which you know our loan
- 23:28was through and things like that in terms of where we were at with our lending.
- 23:30We'd had
- 23:31a breakdown about in August.
- 23:33We sort of got it given a breakdown.
- 23:35And then there were a few
- 23:36costs that came in in September, which I had some receipts for, but not all of them.
- 23:40So there was a
- 23:40bit of conversation about what the actual debt was in terms of where we were at with our loan
- 23:46and lending and things like that.
- 23:47Can I just clarify, when you say that,
- 23:49you basically mean you had to actually really carefully look at how much you'd spent and how
- 23:54much you owed to get a clear picture of the amount that you still needed to pay back to the bank and
- 23:59therefore that was the thing that was impacting the sort of question mark around what's the value
- 24:04of this property yeah yeah and they disagreed with the real estate valuation and things like that so
- 24:10then I sort of that's the approach I was trying to take it was going the house is kind of our main
- 24:16asset we've both kind of chucked everything we've had in the last two years into this and the wedding
- 24:21you know there's not really much else to argue over let's just work out what the equity is split
- 24:25that 50 50 and we'll go our separate ways and they offered me a figure which was way less than
- 24:32the equity based on our full loan and what their real estate agent had provided as a property
- 24:39valuation like I think at that point the property might have been valued at like one point I can't
- 24:44know if it was 1.2 or 1.3 maybe even at that point that's amazing at 24 holy and it was like
- 24:53it's location driven definitely and the timing um so following that I got my first lawyer letter
- 25:00so he went and got a lawyer involved and sent me this formal letter and I went oh okay so we're
- 25:06going down that path and then I got a lawyer of my own because every lawyer knows you should never
- 25:11act for yourself and so they sent the first letter when it comes to relationship property the first
- 25:17step is disclosure so you do a full breakdown of cost like debts and liabilities to work out
- 25:22what everything is involved to then work out what is relationship property what's the split what
- 25:27does that look like we spent the next year after they started the first letter asking for disclosure
- 25:32and did not get it and what so what were you waiting to get what disclosure did they need
- 25:36to provide so like the debt the actual debt in terms of you know our costs and things like that
- 25:43and you can't put forward a serious offer until you sort of get full disclosure on debts and
- 25:47liabilities so we're asking for information we weren't getting it that went on for a year
- 25:51um at this point i was like i can't live here so we were still sharing the house
- 25:56yeah no he was living upstairs i was living downstairs because there's like an apartment
- 26:00downstairs oh my god I cannot deal I would have just been like on actual eggshells not wanting
- 26:07to leave the house not wanting to that's so bad for your mental health yeah and I was like this
- 26:12is not viable like we need a solution we're not getting a resolution then I got the lawyer's
- 26:16letter and I was like okay I'm out like I literally can't stay here a day longer because
- 26:21he was also like knocking on my door being like take me back take me back and I'm like no like
- 26:25you made your bed line it let me move on um and you've also now got lawyers involved and
- 26:30then I was like I need out so then that year I was working as a lawyer by that point I'd left
- 26:34Queenstown and was working in Wanaka at a law firm there and when I moved in with my two best
- 26:39friends anyone going through a breakup move in with your best friends because it is so much fun
- 26:43you have the time of your life so then we face a three-year court battle over this house um so it
- 26:50wasn't quick it wasn't smooth it was one of the most horrific processes I think I've ever been
- 26:55through in my life um and a real eye-opening experience like I think we always the perception
- 27:01is law is black and white and it's this or that that is absolutely not the case like it is so gray
- 27:07that it's unbelievable and I think I should have known that given we all hear about how you've got
- 27:11like the family court the court of appeal the supreme court like even when a court makes a
- 27:18ruling you can challenge it so it's like laws never black and white you know you get a ruling
- 27:23and you can go to another court and get it overturned so anyone thinking that they have
- 27:28it figured out or there's going to be this person coming in to say you're right or here's like a
- 27:33judgment like you know go away on your merry way you're dreaming and I think that's the reality
- 27:38I've learned in terms of life like there is never a real winner there's never a clear outcome so
- 27:44for the next three years we were in court and every time you felt like you win courts just
- 27:50give opportunity after opportunity like he simply just would not comply with court orders and
- 27:55what do you do you have to go back to court and say I have to spend more money on more lawyers
- 28:00wait more time and be like you made a ruling they haven't complied what are you going to do about it
- 28:05oh we'll go back we'll give them another chance and then they do it again and they don't comply
- 28:09So I don't know how long into this at this point, maybe a couple of years later,
- 28:13by going back and forth, back and forth through courts.
- 28:16And also, sorry, do you think he was trying to make you spend more money on lawyers?
- 28:20Oh, absolutely.
- 28:21It was like, we'll draw this out until you give up because you can't keep funding this forever.
- 28:26Absolutely.
- 28:27That's so mean.
- 28:29Yeah.
- 28:29No, that was definitely the intention is we'll drag this out as long as possible
- 28:34and let you keep spending money until you run out because you're going to run out.
- 28:36like all your equity was in that home like you do you put your entire life and savings into that
- 28:41you don't have the funds to keep funding lawyers to keep spending sending letters after letters and
- 28:46keep going to court years and years later had to pay for like valuations and all those types of
- 28:50things that people all tell you lawyers go oh you'll get that back you don't very rare do you
- 28:55get to a point like when it comes to reaching settlements and relationship property so much
- 28:59stuff gets gets swept under the rug so people sitting there saying you can get this you can
- 29:03you might but the chances of you getting that you probably won't in reality so at this point how
- 29:08much did you spend on legal fees like where did it land because that would have been so stressful
- 29:13spending that much money on court fees number one but then yeah how like at what did you think okay
- 29:20maybe I should just give up what I mean the whole like sunken cost fallacy would be really hard to
- 29:26if you've already spent a lot of money.
- 29:29Yeah, I think we finally got to a figure.
- 29:33So just to give you a bit of context as well.
- 29:34So I finally got a court date for a court audit for sale.
- 29:38So because the property wasn't in my name,
- 29:39I could only do so much.
- 29:41So we got a hearing for a court audit sale.
- 29:46And literally, I think it was like 12 hours
- 29:49before that court hearing,
- 29:51my lawyer who had been with me for the entire two and a half,
- 29:55almost three year process,
- 29:57she had to leave town and I said to her are you okay to attend this via video conference and she's
- 30:02like yeah yeah and she's like oh I'll double check and she sent an email to the court saying you know
- 30:07I'm out of town can I attend via this video conference and they wrote back and said no
- 30:11so three years into the separation 12 hours or whatever it was before my court process
- 30:16my lawyer's like oh I'm not going to be there and we now need to find another lawyer who can step in
- 30:22and represent you at this court hearing for a court order because it was the finally the big
- 30:26day to get the court ordered sale because that's what we needed to actually sell the property
- 30:31because they just weren't complying with any of the directions so now it was like to take it out
- 30:34of their hands but yeah and the lawyer I'd had for three years up until that point couldn't attend so
- 30:39we had to find somebody on like overnight's notice to be like can you show up and present at this
- 30:43hearing for me so that was another spanner in the works but at that hearing we got the court ordered
- 30:48sale so the court said cool here's your order for sale you can now like sell the property he then
- 30:53didn't comply with that and that was another spanner in the works where you get a court ordered
- 30:59sale and they literally just don't comply and the court had appointed a real estate agent and yeah
- 31:06and they were just like no and just didn't comply and fast forward you had to wait till that court
- 31:11order expired and be like well they haven't complied with the court order which was like
- 31:14another three months and then in that three month time frame my lawyer that had been with me for
- 31:19that two and a half three year time frame she actually got made a judge and couldn't no longer
- 31:22represent me so then I had to find another lawyer and amongst all of this as well and then fast
- 31:28forward I got another lawyer we finally got the property sold and that was that 2022 I think we
- 31:36got it sold via court ordered sale and for context he still thought he could keep the property the
- 31:41real estate that went there the day of settlement and he was still in the house because they tried
- 31:45to do I won't go into the detail but he tried to do everything he could to stop the sale
- 31:49and it didn't work the buyer paid and then the real estate showed up and he was literally in
- 31:53the house all his furniture like nothing packed like he literally thought he could stop the sale
- 31:57and she's like you need to get out like this house is sold um and she rang me and she's like
- 32:02so settlement's gone through but he's still in the property and he's now running around like a
- 32:07headless chicken trying to get all of his stuff out before the buyer shows up like it was a wild
- 32:11experience he is crazy what who I mean okay let's just I'm gonna keep my mouth shut sorry yeah yeah
- 32:21so that was wild so that so 2023 we finally after everything like it was like 1920 it was like three
- 32:28years um finally got it sold obviously quite shit at dates I'll be honest Holly's yeah honestly she's
- 32:34like 20 it was 85 and it was 91 like math is not my strong point um anyway so nor dates anyway it
- 32:44was finally sold and that was great but it was still the conversation about how the sale proceeds
- 32:49are going to be split so then that took another year of court fees and processes and we still
- 32:55hadn't got the information that we've been asking for for however long we're now yeah we're definitely
- 33:002023 by this point so it'd been going on for ages the property been sold but we still hadn't got the
- 33:05information and we finally went to a court date and by this point I am almost at six figures in
- 33:11legal fees over the last however many years and I'd saved a lot of costs because I obviously had
- 33:16a background in law I have a background in relationship property and things like that
- 33:19like I knew what I needed to do and what I didn't so I could save money and help my lawyers as much
- 33:23as possible by giving you know pre-drafting staffing letting them edit and things like that
- 33:29I remember sitting there and my lawyer said to me, Holly, he's like, at some point you just have to be done.
- 33:34He's like, oh, so whatever date, however many years, we're not great at math, but we sat in front of the judge.
- 33:39So we finally got this hearing where we're meant to be deciding what happens with the legal fees and with the settlement proceeds.
- 33:46And the judge literally looked at me and goes, I'm not going to lie.
- 33:50I haven't read any of this.
- 33:52And I just went, and my heart just like sunk.
- 33:55And I was like, this is your job.
- 33:57Like you're a judge.
- 33:58this is a hearing that you're meant to be hearing and you're telling me you know you have to I've
- 34:03paid lawyers to draft all of these memorandums file all of this evidence for you to review before
- 34:08today and you're sitting here looking at me going I haven't read any of this we're now four years
- 34:13whatever and why don't we just get a resolution today you're both young let's just move on with
- 34:17your life and I'm like well that's our justice system where I've spent tens of thousands of
- 34:24on lawyers filing this evidence, four years of my life.
- 34:29And for a judge to sit there and look at me
- 34:31and go, I haven't read any of it.
- 34:33Let's just reach a resolution.
- 34:34Come on, like you're all young here.
- 34:36Let's just move on with our lives.
- 34:37And I was like, wow.
- 34:39And then my lawyer said to me, he's like,
- 34:41you could keep going.
- 34:42You could win.
- 34:43But for them, it's not about money.
- 34:45It's about principle.
- 34:46And if you win today, they'll take you to the court of appeal.
- 34:49Do you know what I mean?
- 34:50Like
- 34:50a win isn't even a win in New Zealand.
- 34:52You can challenge it.
- 34:53He's like, it's time to like,
- 34:55well, he didn't tell me it was time,
- 34:57but he helped me frame to go,
- 34:58it's time to just walk away.
- 34:59So we went back in and he did what he did.
- 35:02And he like, I walked away
- 35:03and it was definitely not what I would consider fair
- 35:06considering property prices in that time as well
- 35:08had gone up even more.
- 35:10That was sort of the peak of property pricing
- 35:13and things like that.
- 35:13But I was just at that point so done
- 35:15and it was time to move on with my life
- 35:17and realize that there is way more to life
- 35:20than money um and and it wasn't to me I don't think it was about money it was trying to be like
- 35:25you've done something wrong and you should be held accountable and you should have to prove
- 35:29that and present the evidence and you can't ignore court orders and somebody needs to say
- 35:34it's not okay and then I was like nobody's coming to say it's not okay nobody's coming to save you
- 35:39it's time to just move on with your life and let go of this concept that somebody will come save
- 35:46you or say somebody's hurt you but what were you offered in terms of like what was the actual
- 35:52decision that you had to accept that you weren't stoked with it wasn't it definitely wasn't 50 50
- 35:57there was just numbers kind of thrown around but it should have been 50 50 and it wasn't is
- 36:01essentially what happened no yeah definitely so they were looking at the amount that the house
- 36:06sold for and they said you can have this and you can have this yeah pretty much and there was no
- 36:11recognition for like all the orders previously of like occupation rent that was meant to come in and
- 36:17all the value you know the three grand valuations that you got I had to go and pay for twice on
- 36:23court directions or any of it and it's it just none of that came into it but it was time to walk
- 36:28away and like you could afford and keep spending money but it was yeah I got to a point where it
- 36:32was like again not great at math but we're 2023 and it's time to move on with your life like this
- 36:38has been going on since 2019.
- 36:39Like it's time to let it all go.
- 36:42Did you end up getting some money
- 36:44out of it?
- 36:45Like, did you at least get capital gains and like some, it wasn't as though you were
- 36:50in the red even after spending all like, you know, a hundred thousand on legal fees?
- 36:54Yes.
- 36:54No,
- 36:55I was very fortunate in terms of that.
- 36:57And because I'd just been paying my legal fees as I went along,
- 37:00I kind of just treated that as money gone.
- 37:01Like I wasn't really looking at that.
- 37:03So definitely in a
- 37:04position where I had now a decent still a decent house deposit to move forward with so it wasn't
- 37:10me going into the negatives and you're walking away with 10 grand like it was still a decent
- 37:14house deposit maybe not in central Otago on my own but um like it was fine and I mean it wasn't
- 37:20going to change my life by any means but it was there and it was like okay more from that it was
- 37:25like let's take the lessons from it versus maybe monetary wins like let's take the life lessons
- 37:31the law lessons that you learned in terms of tools and relationship property and what people can do
- 37:37and you know the power of court orders and you know all the limitations on court orders and
- 37:43things like that as well let's talk about the lesson so if you look back now what would you
- 37:47have done differently if you were buying with him I mean gosh let's start there there's many
- 37:52learnings I'm sure but let's start there yeah definitely having I would never do a build with
- 37:59a builder privately like not I would only ever build through a building company fixed price
- 38:04contract you both know what you're in you both know what you're putting in you know what your
- 38:08costs are there would be no building yourself or trying to save cost elsewhere or doing any of
- 38:14those types of tools or tricks I would be like no neither of us going to do anything here's a
- 38:18builder here's the contractors here's the price that's it I would have walked away a lot sooner
- 38:22knowing what I know now if I'd known what I'd known at the end I would have walked away at
- 38:27the very beginning in 2019 but also I only can say that because I went through everything that I went
- 38:33through versus if I hadn't gone through that experience I would never have been okay walking
- 38:37away at that point because I would never have known.
- 38:39So was it a similar amount basically that
- 38:41they offered you at that point?
- 38:42It was more but I think given everything that I'd gone through
- 38:46it wasn't worth it.
- 38:48Money wise no, life lessons wise absolutely because I think it built some
- 38:52serious resilience and that real understanding of letting go I think we all sometimes feel like
- 38:57when people do something wrong we're all grown up like oh you know if you do something wrong
- 39:00you're gonna get in trouble it's like are you really like no one's actually that worried
- 39:04um unless it's like really seriously bad but like nobody actually cares and nobody is going to come
- 39:09going to come save you so I think it was sort of the thing of like taking life into your own hands
- 39:14and being like how can I do this for myself and never need to rely on anyone moving forward was
- 39:18probably a huge thing that came out of it for me and to be like I can be successful and do well on
- 39:24my own terms and not have somebody else play a part in that or deter my level of success and
- 39:31what I do with my life.
- 39:32So many things I want to touch on but the first thing is maybe the last
- 39:38point that you just made.
- 39:39Do you mean that you will never get financially involved with someone
- 39:43again?
- 39:44That you don't want to build a life with somebody where your success is intertwined?
- 39:48Is
- 39:49that kind of what you mean maybe and I don't want to say not intertwined because because I did then
- 39:55enter into a new relationship post that whole experience and did enter into a new phase of
- 40:01building a house with somebody again but my approach to it was very different and I also
- 40:07maintained my own independence throughout it and I was never and very clear on that and I think
- 40:14maybe not so refusing to intertwine lives but still making sure I am good financially and I'm
- 40:21not actually relying on someone else ever financially and I think I've seen that so much
- 40:26in my career as well as relationship property how women particularly can be impacted by supporting
- 40:34their partners in life and in things and things outside of your control happen and you get hit
- 40:40really hard financially and that's a whole different concept that we could probably go into
- 40:44but that is a big driver in terms of it sort of I think gave something in me to be like okay I want
- 40:50to put myself in a position where I am okay financially and I never have to rely on anyone
- 40:55ever again and I can still be in a relationship and have a life with somebody but I will always
- 41:01have my own financial independence.
- 41:03It's such a hard balance though you know the idea of
- 41:06wanting your own and having your own financial independence, but then also having shared goals
- 41:11and working towards things with somebody.
- 41:13I definitely don't think I've figured out what
- 41:15that middle ground is, but is what you're saying, if you go about it the right way and you have
- 41:21your own financial independence, as in you have your own money, you have your own goals,
- 41:25but you also are open to the idea of doing something with them.
- 41:30Yeah.
- 41:30Because I think, yeah, I don't know.
- 41:32I'm still figuring out how I feel about that.
- 41:35Yeah.
- 41:36And I get that.
- 41:36I think it changes though, depending on what phase you're in,
- 41:40in terms of that, like what it could be right now, it can be really different when you enter
- 41:44a next chapter, when you do start building something together.
- 41:47And I think that's the thing
- 41:48when it comes to finances and relationships and things like that.
- 41:51It's not black and white and
- 41:52it's not like it's this one rule that you then have to stick to for the next 60 years.
- 41:57I think
- 41:58it's being open to being like, okay, this is where we are right now.
- 42:00And this is what it looks like.
- 42:01okay this is our next chapter and this is what we want to do how does it look like then and just
- 42:05making sure in each phase even doing stuff together you are still making sure like you are
- 42:11you are protected and you are going to be okay no matter if something does happen in any of those
- 42:16different phases you haven't just given away all of your I don't want to say it's not your
- 42:21independence but like not just passing it over to somebody else and trusting them to do it for you
- 42:26maybe it's not being passive yeah yeah how do you think that that entire experience shaped
- 42:32the way that you now think about money relationships property today I think I'm open
- 42:41to absolutely doing things with another person and it doesn't have to be on your own like you
- 42:47don't have to build success by yourself I think it's very hard to build success by yourself like
- 42:51it takes a whole group of people to make you successful but I think it's also choosing those
- 42:56people wisely like in that dynamic that was never a two-way equal street so it's finding somebody
- 43:02who like you say has the same goals like if you're not aligned financially and you do have different
- 43:08goals like do you really want to be intertwining your finances if you do have different goals or
- 43:12they don't have the same sort of trajectory you want to go so I think it is like aligning now
- 43:17For me particularly, it's aligning with somebody who has the same sort of vision and goals and approach that I do.
- 43:25And it's not necessarily they agree with what I do.
- 43:27Like I'd hope it'd be somebody I can learn from and grow from and they can, you know, add skills that I don't have because I definitely don't have it all figured out.
- 43:35but really being a team and taking that team approach and making sure it's fair both sides
- 43:42the whole way through not just yeah one person driving and the other person being passive.
- 43:48I guess if someone's listening right now and they're thinking about all their own property
- 43:52with somebody what are some of the key things that they should think about either before signing or
- 43:59if they are in a really happy relationship and they have property with somebody what are some
- 44:04of those things that they should think about make sure they have in place maybe it's even
- 44:07conversations that they should have had or had documented yeah so I think everyone needs to
- 44:13normalize the conversation of prenups I literally had this conversation a couple of days ago where
- 44:19their whole perception of prenups was that gold digger term like we need a prenup because we
- 44:25think you're a gold digger and I'm like that's going with the approach of like prenups are what's
- 44:28mine is mine what's yours is yours hard no you know there's and it's like that's not what a
- 44:33prenup is like that is a really old school maybe perception of what prenups are but they they're
- 44:40so fluid and they're so tailored to each individual person and their circumstances
- 44:46that we need to make them normal and say that they should be part of our conversations and
- 44:50not this big scary thing of me trying to say well if we break up you're gonna going to steal my
- 44:55money and you're at this gold digger or whatever it is because because it's not like that in
- 44:59reality I think the reality of a prenup is saying let's look at our relationship what we've
- 45:05contributed where we both are and where we want to go and what we would consider fair given who's
- 45:09doing what and who's sacrificing and things like that because also things aren't always monetary
- 45:13as well contributing to a relationship a lot of things aren't monetary that you can't value so
- 45:18it's taking a holistic view and I think the reality of a prenup is it's just saying between
- 45:23us let's agree with what's fair versus letting the government decide like the the act is just
- 45:29a backup if you haven't chosen and I think that's the thing about a prenup is it's you making a
- 45:34choice and a proactive choice because so many people get in because of a gift from a family
- 45:38member or an opportunity and things like that that people do want to protect because I think
- 45:43it's particularly in New Zealand once you do hit that three-year mark and you are in a relationship
- 45:48and you are considered de facto if you are living in a home that you did you know perhaps receive
- 45:54some inheritance for or a gift for you've been you know paying for this and you've reduced your
- 45:58debt you've down quite substantially you might have owned it for 10 years before you you've met
- 46:02your now partner you've actually got quite a bit of equity that you've built prior to this
- 46:07relationship with this person you might go I actually want to look at a way to protect that
- 46:11at least in the next five to ten years particularly if they aren't contributing um towards it or even
- 46:17just protect what you've built up into that point and there's just so many ways you can do it so I
- 46:23think it's being okay to have those conversations like I think we're also scared to talk about money
- 46:28and that perception of if we're talking about money,
- 46:31you're greedy or you've got an ulterior motive
- 46:34or what are you trying to do?
- 46:36And it's like, it's not, it's just money.
- 46:38Let's just talk about it.
- 46:39Let's have those conversations
- 46:40because the more clear you are at the beginning,
- 46:44I think the better it is going to be long-term
- 46:46because nobody's under any illusions.
- 46:48You're both clear on where you stand.
- 46:50There's no uncertain territory where people make up stories
- 46:52and we're all good at making up stories in our heads
- 46:54when we don't know
- 46:55and people are quite good at avoiding conversations.
- 46:57and then we paint these pictures and act in certain ways.
- 46:59And it's like, let's just get clear from the beginning.
- 47:01Have those conversations with your partner and decide,
- 47:04and you might not be able to decide what's fair.
- 47:06You might need some guidance.
- 47:08And that is where lawyers are helpful,
- 47:10is they've seen this, they do it a lot,
- 47:12to say, there are so many different ways
- 47:14you can approach this.
- 47:15It is not what's mine is mine,
- 47:16what's yours is yours, full stop, by any means.
- 47:19So I think it's being okay to have those conversations
- 47:21together and then both be willing to go,
- 47:23okay, well, how can we,
- 47:24maybe we do need to go get some advice
- 47:26and hear how we can do it in a way that's fair for us both
- 47:30and how it can evolve with our life
- 47:31and the different things that we do.
- 47:33For anyone that's listening to that,
- 47:34because I think we should absolutely go into more detail
- 47:38and I would love to actually have another conversation
- 47:41with you where we talk about more about succession,
- 47:45wills, property law,
- 47:47how to think about prenups differently,
- 47:50assets within relationships.
- 47:51I think that there's a huge conversation to be had
- 47:54and obviously as a lawyer and with experience in this space, I think that there's a lot that we
- 47:59could learn and unpack.
- 48:01So I would love to talk about that more.
- 48:03But I would love to wrap this
- 48:04conversation up by just, I guess, asking what do you think is the biggest reason that people
- 48:11should think about, talk about this stuff earlier in relationships or earlier in life,
- 48:16given the experience you have both personally, but also with your work?
- 48:20I imagine there's people
- 48:20wanting to tune out of this because it is so bury your head in the sand and I understand why and I
- 48:27just I don't know I'd love to know for anyone that is thinking I don't really want to tune in for
- 48:32part two because I don't really want to think about this do you have any kind of like final
- 48:39thoughts that may change their mind on that I think you're always better to be informed and
- 48:45make a decision based off having enough information and once you've got that information if you don't
- 48:49want to do anything with it fair enough like everyone is their own person and they can choose
- 48:54to do with what they want but if you don't know I think that's where a lot of it I think the
- 49:00surprises come in particularly personally and professionally what I've seen is people don't
- 49:05know and then they get to the end when something goes wrong and they're thrown all this law and
- 49:11all of these positions and they go but that's not what they said but that's not what we agreed to
- 49:15but that's not what we had decided.
- 49:17That's not how we acted for the last 15 years.
- 49:20They didn't do this.
- 49:20They didn't do that.
- 49:21And it goes, it doesn't matter.
- 49:22Like it actually doesn't matter what you two have done,
- 49:24what you two have decided,
- 49:25what you two have said between yourselves.
- 49:27When you get to the end point
- 49:28and then you have a lawyer saying,
- 49:30well, you're legally entitled to this
- 49:31or you could legally do this.
- 49:33So many people go, oh, it's not me.
- 49:35Despite what we've said between us for the last 15 years,
- 49:37it's not me.
- 49:38My lawyer has said this.
- 49:39It's my legal right.
- 49:40Of course I have to do this.
- 49:42And I have seen that so many times.
- 49:45Yeah.
- 49:46And then again, and it's all these people who go, well, I didn't know.
- 49:49And it's like, well,
- 49:50that's to me where I do think it's really important to educate people on knowing what
- 49:54are the rights?
- 49:55Because so many of us don't know and don't know how it works.
- 49:58And you don't know
- 49:58until it's too late.
- 49:59And you go, well, we haven't been operating that way.
- 50:01And it goes, well,
- 50:02it's too late at that point because the laws apply and it is what it is.
- 50:05So I think it's
- 50:06just being better educated.
- 50:07Like I want to be better educated on finances.
- 50:09We all want to be
- 50:10better educated so then we can make the decisions and do with that information what we please.
- 50:14But I think having that information to then make a decision is always going to put you
- 50:18in a better position.
- 50:20It's also interesting because your experience with the court system and actually trying
- 50:25to do something, realizing how difficult that is to implement if you don't have something
- 50:31watertight and in writing.
- 50:34I mean, you've experienced that firsthand where you kind of can't rely on the system
- 50:39to do what's right by you.
- 50:41You have to put it in writing first.
- 50:43And I think that, yeah, it makes a lot of sense why you're doing the work you're doing and why you're so passionate about telling people what their rights are and what they need to do if they, yeah, want to feel like they've got their ducks in a row and are protected should worst case scenario happen, like your fiancee come home two months before the wedding and tell you they've cheated.
- 51:05Holly I think that I can speak on behalf of the entire audience and yeah the whole curve community
- 51:11and anyone else that's tuning in for the first time to hear someone educated very successful
- 51:18very honest and and have the courage to share all of the things that you quote unquote did wrong or
- 51:25didn't know and like all of the messy stuff in between I think that you're really walking the
- 51:31walking the walk.
- 51:32It's getting a bit like walking the talk in terms of sharing what happened to you
- 51:35to help other people.
- 51:36And I think that that's super admirable.
- 51:38So thank you for sharing.
