- 0:57Speaker 1: we gotta go Thank God sometime. Hey, everybody, welcome to
- 1:07Speaker 1: another episode of the Tailgate. I am joined by the
- 1:11Speaker 1: great Jimmy Whistman.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Hello Jimmy, Hello outside.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I don't know what this energy is. I try to
- 1:19Speaker 1: always bring a lot of energy at the beginning of
- 1:21Speaker 1: the show, a little game show in it. Yeah, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: here's the problem. The only thing I think about is
- 1:26Speaker 1: I need energy. I never think about the words, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: so it's always either way too long, like ladies and
- 1:32Speaker 1: gentlemen joining us on the show is a man who
- 1:36Speaker 1: likes a team and he's a man Jimmy Whisman, or
- 1:41Speaker 1: it's way too short like I just did, and it
- 1:44Speaker 1: just falls off a cliff and then all of a sudden,
- 1:46Speaker 1: you're holding the show going hello everyone.
- 1:50Speaker 2: When we podcast and make a Patreon episode, that's we
- 1:54Speaker 2: never know what to do there. Either. It's very similar
- 1:56Speaker 2: to that where we'll say stuff and then people will
- 1:58Speaker 2: tweet at us and say, wow, you guys aren't real
- 2:01Speaker 2: excited to do these shows. I don't know how to
- 2:04Speaker 2: how to give you what you want.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The main problem with this episode, Jimmy, is because here's
- 2:10Speaker 1: the thing. We're going to get into Dobbs Mania. Yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 1: we're going to get into the unique nature of your
- 2:16Speaker 1: season with a giving up a seventy burger and then
- 2:19Speaker 1: also beating the Bills last night. We're going to get
- 2:22Speaker 1: in to a lot of football relevant like currently relevant things.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But all I think about a lot of people when
- 2:30Speaker 1: they think about the Denver Broncos in the Minnesota Vikings,
- 2:33Speaker 1: it drums up the pain of nineteen ninety eight.
- 2:36Speaker 2: All that feeling.
- 2:37Speaker 1: But for me, yeah, there is a specific moment that
- 2:42Speaker 1: is seared into my brain. It's one of my favorite
- 2:45Speaker 1: football moments of all time, and it happened to I'm
- 2:48Speaker 1: curious if you'll remember this all right, two thousand and three. Okay,
- 2:52Speaker 1: regular season game. Yeah, relatively uneventful first half. But on
- 2:59Speaker 1: third and twenty four, with fifteen seconds left in the
- 3:03Speaker 1: first half, Dante Culpepper rolled out past the thirty yard
- 3:07Speaker 1: line and thought, hey, I'm gonna try to throw this
- 3:10Speaker 1: all the way to the end zone, and he heaved
- 3:13Speaker 1: the ball upwards into the lights of the Metrodome. Randy Moss,
- 3:19Speaker 1: who had gone to where you catch a touchdown the
- 3:22Speaker 1: end zone, so he saw the ball and he's like, well,
- 3:24Speaker 1: that's not gonna make it. So he came back, caught
- 3:28Speaker 1: the ball at the ten yard line, and with two
- 3:31Speaker 1: Denver Broncos draped all over him, he spun and flipped
- 3:36Speaker 1: the ball over his head to Moe Williams, who ran
- 3:40Speaker 1: it in for a touchdown. I think it's when the
- 3:44Speaker 1: NFL network did the sixty eight Greatest Plays in NFL history,
- 3:47Speaker 1: it was number sixty eight. They didn't do the sixty
- 3:51Speaker 1: eight greatest plays. They did, Jimmy, they did the hundred.
- 3:54Speaker 1: They weren't like, you know what, we're the NFL. Sixty
- 3:58Speaker 1: Eight's enough.
- 3:59Speaker 2: They'll get the idea.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But do you as a Denver fan? To me, that
- 4:05Speaker 1: is like an all time organizational moment for you? Do
- 4:09Speaker 1: you even remember that?
- 4:10Speaker 2: I don't, and I and I often times I try
- 4:13Speaker 2: to shut moments like that one out because they hurt
- 4:17Speaker 2: so bad, Like the Colts kicker leveling?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Was it?
- 4:21Speaker 2: Hillman? I think it was for his like a highlight,
- 4:25Speaker 2: one of his top three biggest plays of his career.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I try to shut those out because I don't want
- 4:30Speaker 2: to remember them. And why doesn't. I really don't remember
- 4:35Speaker 2: a lateral to a touchdown to win the game in fifteen.
- 4:38Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, let's be very clear. That's how pathetic.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That's how pathetic when you haven't won Super Bowls. It
- 4:46Speaker 1: was the end of the first half. Jee, Yeah, it
- 4:49Speaker 1: was not to win the game. I think they did
- 4:52Speaker 1: win that game. They it was definitely just the end
- 4:57Speaker 1: of the first half it was it might have been
- 5:00Speaker 1: and Mike Tye's the beginning of the Mike Tice era.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Well, let me say this, the the Culpeper to Moss
- 5:08Speaker 2: uh combination is one of the what you can watch
- 5:12Speaker 2: highlights of the two of them for days. They were
- 5:15Speaker 2: so much fun cold and also Cunningham. Cunningham to Moss
- 5:20Speaker 2: was amazing. As a Denver Broncos fan, I love the
- 5:23Speaker 2: AFC and I love the rivalries in the AFC, but
- 5:26Speaker 2: nothing really makes me as happy in the NFC as
- 5:30Speaker 2: a Vikings Eagles or a Vikings anything really rivalry. They
- 5:34Speaker 2: are so much fun to watch because the Vikings really are.
- 5:38Speaker 2: They're one of the tougher NFC teams historically. They're always tough.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And that's the problem. It's it's always tough, never the
- 5:46Speaker 1: bride Jimmy, and that is I've heard. I've had a
- 5:50Speaker 1: lot of friends who are fans of AFC teams say
- 5:53Speaker 1: that where they're like, you guys are always You're just
- 5:56Speaker 1: always there and you're like cool, sweet compliment.
- 5:59Speaker 2: We see you at the dance, you look so freddy.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You see us at the dance, sloth in our way
- 6:05Speaker 1: over by the kool aid, hoping somebody accidentally gives us
- 6:08Speaker 1: the homecoming crown. It's it is. It is wild because
- 6:14Speaker 1: I think as Viking fans, since we've never won, it's
- 6:19Speaker 1: easy to disdain a lot of teams. Like most teams
- 6:23Speaker 1: I despise list is pretty long because for me, there
- 6:27Speaker 1: are a handful of teams that I really can invest
- 6:30Speaker 1: in other teams if they're playing well. The Broncos are
- 6:33Speaker 1: actually one. I don't have any negative feelings towards the Broncos.
- 6:36Speaker 1: The Jaguars are really fun. You know, there's a there's
- 6:39Speaker 1: a few of these teams that I I don't It
- 6:42Speaker 1: doesn't bother me to connect to, but I find that
- 6:46Speaker 1: the Vikings for other teams, especially in the AFC, we
- 6:50Speaker 1: are we are that team. They're like, oh, I love
- 6:52Speaker 1: the Vikings. It's like, yeah, because we've never ruined any
- 6:54Speaker 1: shit for you, like I wish you hated us.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And the Broncos are similar to that too. They when
- 7:00Speaker 2: when they stink, they stink in fashion that is the
- 7:03Speaker 2: most non threatening and so funny to watch stink. And
- 7:07Speaker 2: when they're good, they're they're fun for other teams to hate,
- 7:10Speaker 2: mostly the AFC because they only play a few teams
- 7:13Speaker 2: in the NFC during the regular season, then they only
- 7:16Speaker 2: have one at the end if they win everything. So
- 7:19Speaker 2: that is a that is a nice distinction in the NFL,
- 7:22Speaker 2: being able to pick and choose what teams you don't
- 7:25Speaker 2: necessarily hate in the other league because in the other conference,
- 7:28Speaker 2: because it doesn't doesn't affect your day, usually.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Doesn't usually ruin an entire week for you. It was
- 7:37Speaker 1: never disdained towards Broncos, the Broncos and Broncos fans was
- 7:42Speaker 1: to watch you guys beat Brett Farr the amount little
- 7:47Speaker 1: shitty thirteen year old me. Do you know how many
- 7:50Speaker 1: people I did the mile high salute to in my
- 7:53Speaker 1: school who were Patriot fans. I think that's when I
- 7:55Speaker 1: learned how to be really a problem, real patty. Yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 1: that was the year that that started for me. And
- 8:01Speaker 1: then the next year to exist in pure sadness as
- 8:07Speaker 1: your team beat the Falcons. So it's never been disdained,
- 8:11Speaker 1: but that two year run for you guys, there are
- 8:16Speaker 1: people who will go to their grave in Minnesota despising
- 8:20Speaker 1: that we didn't get a chance to see that ninety
- 8:22Speaker 1: eight offense against your Denver Broncos.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And you're not wrong, because I recently watched that game
- 8:28Speaker 2: all over again because it was it's still probably top
- 8:32Speaker 2: three championship games for a conference championship. It was such
- 8:37Speaker 2: a great game. You rarely get an overtime game, and
- 8:41Speaker 2: you shouldn't have had an overtime game. Really, I mean
- 8:44Speaker 2: the race to thirty one, Oh, Jemmy, the first team
- 8:49Speaker 2: to get thirty one generally wins the game, and they
- 8:52Speaker 2: should have had thirty one long before it was certainly
- 8:57Speaker 2: Pi Moss should have had a touchdown and then leaving
- 9:02Speaker 2: three on the on the on the field with a
- 9:04Speaker 2: miss field goal not not a tough one. I feel
- 9:08Speaker 2: like I could have made that.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Hey, Jimmy, my wife and I got in a fight
- 9:12Speaker 1: like two months ago. Do you want to come after
- 9:14Speaker 1: the show? Should we do another podcast where you dissect
- 9:17Speaker 1: how that let's reet you just say, man, we're lucky
- 9:23Speaker 1: we didn't have to play you, and we can move
- 9:26Speaker 1: on it.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Really, it's really robbery that we didn't get to see
- 9:29Speaker 2: that matchup because that team was so good on on
- 9:33Speaker 2: both sides. They were so good.
- 9:35Speaker 1: You really thank you. You really pulled it together. There's
- 9:38Speaker 1: this series. I can't remember if it was the NFL
- 9:41Speaker 1: networker who did it, but Yeah, and maybe I've talked
- 9:43Speaker 1: about this on the program before, but there was this
- 9:45Speaker 1: series called The Missing Rings and it was all about
- 9:50Speaker 1: the best teams to have never won a title. Oh
- 9:53Speaker 1: and it's the one about the ninety eight Minnesota Vikings.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Is done so well and is so oh heartbreakingly disappointing.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Even as you're going through it, you're like, well, I
- 10:05Speaker 1: wonder if it'll change, and it doesn't. It doesn't change,
- 10:08Speaker 1: but turn it around. But that's the beautiful thing about sports,
- 10:13Speaker 1: is you know, I have so I've made friends across
- 10:18Speaker 1: the league and to watch some of the like when
- 10:21Speaker 1: the Philadelphi as much as I think you and I
- 10:24Speaker 1: feel the same way about Philadelphia fans, yeah, put them
- 10:27Speaker 1: all in prison, hard line on Philly. But one of
- 10:33Speaker 1: my best friends, Blake Wexler, who's been on the show
- 10:36Speaker 1: a number of times. He he's a sweet, sweet, sweet man,
- 10:41Speaker 1: and he to watch him watch his childhood team, And
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's the same way with you, Like when when the
- 10:48Speaker 1: Broncos won, it was such an agonizing, agonizing path to that.
- 10:53Speaker 1: They've gotten so close with Lway and so anytime you
- 10:57Speaker 1: see a fan base and I look forward to that
- 10:59Speaker 1: with the Viking anytime you see a fan base who
- 11:02Speaker 1: finally gets their title, I think that's such a beautiful
- 11:07Speaker 1: thing and it's really interesting to me to see these
- 11:10Speaker 1: teams that got close.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, watching the Cubs finally win was that was so
- 11:16Speaker 2: much fun. And then the very next season, despising every
- 11:20Speaker 2: single person in a Cubs hat really felt good. It
- 11:25Speaker 2: felt as good to hate them as it did to
- 11:29Speaker 2: root for them to win, because you don't you don't
- 11:31Speaker 2: want to see people suffer all ever, sometimes it's fun,
- 11:35Speaker 2: but for the most part, like watching Cleveland struggle and
- 11:39Speaker 2: cry and ruin quarterback after quarterback, it really it patches
- 11:44Speaker 2: up a lot that's wrong with me. The Cubs fans,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I didn't man they were. I loved Ryan Sandberg. I
- 11:52Speaker 2: loved watching them as when I was a kid. And
- 11:55Speaker 2: then watching them just lose it's not fun. And then
- 12:00Speaker 2: to watch them win it felt good. I was I
- 12:01Speaker 2: was happy for him, I was happy for the players
- 12:03Speaker 2: that were involved. One of them had cancer whatever Rizzo
- 12:06Speaker 2: was that his name. I don't know. I don't want
- 12:08Speaker 2: to watch dynasties. I don't like that. I like watching, Yes,
- 12:12Speaker 2: I watch I like watching losing, punishment, pain, reward, and
- 12:16Speaker 2: then go back to the.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Well, go back to where you came from. Yeah, that's
- 12:21Speaker 1: I think about that. I think about the Cleveland Browns
- 12:24Speaker 1: a lot because I think they're the closest organization to
- 12:27Speaker 1: the Minnesota Vikings in professional sports in terms of the
- 12:30Speaker 1: disappointment and the long suffering misery of the fan base.
- 12:33Speaker 1: They just got this unbelievable win against the the Ravens
- 12:38Speaker 1: last week, and I they are on my short list
- 12:41Speaker 1: of teams that as long as they don't win the
- 12:43Speaker 1: Super Bowl against the Vikings, it'll be really fun. But
- 12:47Speaker 1: I I think we're at the point where I don't
- 12:52Speaker 1: know that people are going to handle it well if
- 12:55Speaker 1: Minnesota ever wins a title. Yeah, because I'm gonna tell you,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I'm not gonna handle it well when and I just
- 13:02Speaker 1: I just don't think when you've had this. So the
- 13:04Speaker 1: last time we won a title was ninety one and
- 13:06Speaker 1: eighty seven before that in men's professional sports. So we're
- 13:09Speaker 1: now on a over a three decade run, and before
- 13:14Speaker 1: that ain't no titles going a long ways back. And
- 13:18Speaker 1: so when the Minnesota miracle happened, when Stefan Diggs caught
- 13:24Speaker 1: that ball went to the en zone, I was watching
- 13:26Speaker 1: that game with a handful of Minnesota fans, and one
- 13:29Speaker 1: of them. After a few moments of celebrating, we turned
- 13:35Speaker 1: to see him just on his knees with his hands
- 13:39Speaker 1: up towards the heavens, like the end of Shawshank Redemption,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and he was just joyously screaming the F word, but
- 13:48Speaker 1: like holding the note like like for like Jim carrying
- 13:54Speaker 1: the mask held it for that long. I just don't
- 13:58Speaker 1: think you know how they throw parades after a team
- 14:02Speaker 1: wins a super If the Vikings win a Super Bowl,
- 14:04Speaker 1: I think it'd be more like a zombie pub crawl
- 14:07Speaker 1: because there'd just be people walking around, like what do
- 14:09Speaker 1: you what do you mean? What do you mean?
- 14:11Speaker 2: What do we do?
- 14:12Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 14:13Speaker 2: I'm not how to celebrate?
- 14:14Speaker 1: You mean we made the important kick? Like, I don't
- 14:17Speaker 1: think they're gonna have any clue. What was it like
- 14:20Speaker 1: when when Denver finally broke through and got those.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I'm from Colorado Springs and living in Arizona. We were
- 14:27Speaker 2: white trash and I grew up here with my mother
- 14:29Speaker 2: and I am being a mother who couldn't keep tracking
- 14:32Speaker 2: me in the summer time. We would send me back
- 14:34Speaker 2: to Colorado in the summertime. To stay with my grandparents
- 14:36Speaker 2: and and then we would be back to be back
- 14:38Speaker 2: there for Christmas and holidays and such. So I would
- 14:41Speaker 2: watch football games with my grandfather growing up, and that's
- 14:45Speaker 2: how I mean, I didn't really have a father, So
- 14:47Speaker 2: my my grandfather and I bonded over over football and
- 14:50Speaker 2: specifically the Denver Broncos. And so I didn't get to
- 14:55Speaker 2: watch a lot with anybody passionately here until until much later,
- 15:01Speaker 2: and heartbreak after heartbreak in the eighty seven Super Bowl,
- 15:05Speaker 2: and just watching my grandfather, who worked his tailoff owning,
- 15:10Speaker 2: owning his own business in Colorado Springs. And then so
- 15:13Speaker 2: he would come home and his only joy was drinking
- 15:16Speaker 2: and watching a football game and to have no joy
- 15:21Speaker 2: in it because they always lost, and John Elway thrown
- 15:24Speaker 2: thrown picks constantly and he'd throw cans all over them.
- 15:28Speaker 2: So the passion that I have for the Broncos is
- 15:31Speaker 2: not necessarily even for like investing money in gear and
- 15:35Speaker 2: going to games, and it's just the the downright camaraderie
- 15:39Speaker 2: with my grandfather. And so seeing all of that, my
- 15:44Speaker 2: entire childhood was nothing but losses, just l after l
- 15:48Speaker 2: and then my senior year of high school, they finally
- 15:50Speaker 2: won a Super Bowl, and they gave me just like
- 15:55Speaker 2: the most perfect childhood. It's just heartbreak right up until
- 15:59Speaker 2: you get out and do it on your own and
- 16:01Speaker 2: they win, and then the next year miraculously do it again. Uh.
- 16:05Speaker 2: And we really did get robbed with that Super Bowl
- 16:08Speaker 2: because the the second Super Bowl didn't feel like like a.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Super little anti climactic was it really was. It was
- 16:15Speaker 1: the whole season. It felt like a collision course. And
- 16:19Speaker 1: then somebody took one of the ships out of the
- 16:21Speaker 1: way and the other one just sailed off into the Sun's.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Just a beat. But my high school football coach, I
- 16:27Speaker 2: didn't play football, Why did I say, Mike? The high
- 16:29Speaker 2: school that I went to was football coach. His son
- 16:32Speaker 2: played for the Falcons the year that Denver beat the
- 16:35Speaker 2: pants off of them, So that felt nice too. Coach
- 16:39Speaker 2: swayed the son. He was a lineman. He was a
- 16:41Speaker 2: big fat tub in high school and it went to
- 16:45Speaker 2: play for for the Falcons and and my Broncos beat
- 16:48Speaker 2: the hell out of them. So that felt nice too,
- 16:51Speaker 2: because he was addicted to everybody in the hallings.
- 16:54Speaker 1: You say that about your grandpa and I you know,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and I'm sure that that moment when they finally broke
- 16:59Speaker 1: through was unbelievable for him. We didn't go to games
- 17:03Speaker 1: growing up either. And you know, in fact, so working
- 17:08Speaker 1: for the team has been really, really surreal for me.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I talk about it all the time. I'm surprised that
- 17:13Speaker 1: they let me keep doing it because at some point
- 17:15Speaker 1: there's somebody will have to say, hey, you can't do that,
- 17:20Speaker 1: You can't that thing you just did, don't do. In fact,
- 17:23Speaker 1: there've been those conversations, and so I've like, you know,
- 17:26Speaker 1: how they have the three strike rule where before you
- 17:28Speaker 1: spend life in prison. I'm not big on state laws.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I don't know if that's still happening in California.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, state laws tend to escape me.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Also, I'm at the very least on strike too. So
- 17:41Speaker 1: I you know, I've I've really got to I've really
- 17:43Speaker 1: got to do my best to be a grown up
- 17:45Speaker 1: because I don't want anybody to call one of my
- 17:47Speaker 1: bosses and be like, hey, So I was trying to
- 17:49Speaker 1: ask Justin Jefferson a bunch of questions before the game,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and we'd like to ban him from the building.
- 17:55Speaker 2: We'd like him to never do that.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Can he not be anywhere near it? But so I
- 18:00Speaker 1: got to you know, I get to go be a
- 18:03Speaker 1: part of the event every once in a while when
- 18:05Speaker 1: they play. And I recently got to take my dad
- 18:09Speaker 1: and my best friend and my brothers and my nephew
- 18:13Speaker 1: to the game. And my dad had not been to
- 18:17Speaker 1: a game in I believe twenty two years, twenty two
- 18:21Speaker 1: or twenty three years. My brother all three of my
- 18:24Speaker 1: brothers had never been to a game ever INTREB And
- 18:28Speaker 1: so to watch them get down on the field and
- 18:33Speaker 1: be able to experience, oh what, and then and then
- 18:37Speaker 1: they had the you know, such wonderful seats to watch
- 18:39Speaker 1: them beat the forty nine ers on Monday night football.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It's it gave me, but it gave me that feeling
- 18:46Speaker 1: of because the US Bank was rocking that game. It
- 18:49Speaker 1: was outrageous, and it kind of reinvigorated. I think COVID
- 18:54Speaker 1: and not being connected and not being there and the
- 18:58Speaker 1: team kind of being up and down for a while
- 19:00Speaker 1: kind of pulls you away from what it's like when
- 19:03Speaker 1: the real magic is there. Yeah, and that night, the
- 19:05Speaker 1: magic was there, and it reinstilled that desire in me
- 19:12Speaker 1: to see the team go go to where they're gonna go.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden this Josh Dobbs thing happens,
- 19:18Speaker 1: and I know, excre's the thing. You're in Arizona. I
- 19:20Speaker 1: know you're you're a Broncos fan, but you pay enough
- 19:23Speaker 1: attention to the Cardinals that you got to see him
- 19:26Speaker 1: down there. This People keep asking me what I think,
- 19:29Speaker 1: and all I think is, at least right now, it's
- 19:33Speaker 1: the most fun.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Oh, he is so likable, so fun, so interesting to
- 19:41Speaker 1: watch play. I'm just I'm having fun.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Being in Arizona. Every Arizona football fans should be because
- 19:50Speaker 2: we're Vikings adjacent. I mean, our best wide receiver ever
- 19:53Speaker 2: grew up in Minnesota was a ball boy for the Vikings,
- 19:56Speaker 2: was supposed to play for the Vikings for whatever reason,
- 19:58Speaker 2: Arizona snatched it Gerald and whatever whatever. He had a
- 20:02Speaker 2: great career, uh and the Steelers did him dirty. But
- 20:08Speaker 2: with him being being from Minnesota and really loving the
- 20:12Speaker 2: the community there and then coming here and bringing that
- 20:14Speaker 2: sense of it's a sense of community because Minnesota, they
- 20:17Speaker 2: talk about the Minnesota nice and the end. But it's
- 20:20Speaker 2: it's not just it's not just how people treat you.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It's the the welcoming attitude of of come do this
- 20:25Speaker 2: with it. I've been to a meat auction or meat rally? Meat?
- 20:29Speaker 2: What do they call? That's?
- 20:31Speaker 1: I could I'm not going to tell you because what
- 20:33Speaker 1: I would prefer the rest of this show to be
- 20:35Speaker 1: is just you trying to guess what it's called. What's
- 20:38Speaker 1: it called? A Is it a meat lottery? What do
- 20:41Speaker 1: they what do they call it? It? Is it a
- 20:43Speaker 1: meat count raffle? Is it's a meat raffle? I hate
- 20:48Speaker 1: that you figured that out. That makes me so angry
- 20:51Speaker 1: that you figured out what's it? What do they what
- 20:54Speaker 1: do they call it? A meat? Meat selection party? That's
- 20:58Speaker 1: the one Jimmy go.
- 20:59Speaker 2: With a meat white elephant? Is that what it is?
- 21:02Speaker 2: It's it's so I I went to one. I've won,
- 21:06Speaker 2: I won, Si I won. I had to pack I
- 21:11Speaker 2: had to put two t bones and two uh what
- 21:15Speaker 2: uh rip ros, I don't know. I had to put
- 21:17Speaker 2: them in a hotel freezer and try to get them
- 21:20Speaker 2: cold enough to pack them into my suitcase to fly
- 21:23Speaker 2: those active Phoenix. But the the welcoming attitude, it doesn't
- 21:30Speaker 2: matter Minnesota. The community there is amazing, it really is.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And and Fitzgerald brought that to Phoenix, and he would
- 21:36Speaker 2: and he's he's that he's genuinely a Minnesota person, and
- 21:41Speaker 2: it kind of translated to like, his just behavior in
- 21:44Speaker 2: Arizona made other people one of I don't know, they
- 21:46Speaker 2: made him. It made him a fan favorite, that's for
- 21:48Speaker 2: damn sure. And then with Dobbs going there, now it's
- 21:53Speaker 2: it's like, uh, I don't know, the people here should
- 21:56Speaker 2: really be big. But then NFC, so it's never gonna happen,
- 22:01Speaker 2: but they should. They should be happy when Minnesota does well.
- 22:04Speaker 2: But Dobbs is boy, is that lightning in a bottle?
- 22:08Speaker 2: And and what whether he has talent or not, we'll see.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Even his mistakes are fun. I watched him on an
- 22:16Speaker 2: airplane and I was I could not help but root
- 22:20Speaker 2: for the entire damn team because he's just so much
- 22:23Speaker 2: fun to watch what he's scrambling, his passes, even when
- 22:26Speaker 2: their errant and not even tool receiver. It's so much
- 22:30Speaker 2: fun to watch him just damn try. It's it's the try.
- 22:35Speaker 1: It's it's wild, and it's I both want to see
- 22:38Speaker 1: where it goes, but I also both kind of You know,
- 22:43Speaker 1: when a TV show ends and it has it has
- 22:46Speaker 1: one of the like very rarely do TV shows have
- 22:49Speaker 1: great endings? Yeah, like probably the best of all time,
- 22:53Speaker 1: New Heart, right where he wakes up in his old show.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I don't know that I've seen the last show of
- 22:58Speaker 2: the Bob Newhart Show.
- 23:00Speaker 1: So so the Bob and I always screw the titles up.
- 23:02Speaker 1: But the Bob Newhart Show, he was a therapist in
- 23:05Speaker 1: New York City or wherever it was. I'm guessing that
- 23:08Speaker 1: it was New York City, but with his life. And
- 23:10Speaker 1: then years later he had New Heart, which he was
- 23:13Speaker 1: running a bed and breakfast with Larry, Daryl and Darryl
- 23:17Speaker 1: right and the whole cast up at this crazy thing.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And the last episode ever was him like and they
- 23:24Speaker 1: this is back in the day when you could keep secrets.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So it's a live studio audience and they go to
- 23:29Speaker 1: bed and then there it's the middle of the night
- 23:32Speaker 1: and they switch the sets out and everything's dark, and
- 23:35Speaker 1: then you hear him wake up, and you hear him
- 23:37Speaker 1: talking to his wife, and then she wakes up and
- 23:39Speaker 1: it's his wife from the first show. And so the
- 23:44Speaker 1: entire Bed and Breakfast New Heart show was just a dream.
- 23:49Speaker 2: The whole thing unbelievable.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And so and then you walk away from that and
- 23:53Speaker 1: you go, well, this is perfection. Even though I'd like more.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It's perfection, and no one's gonna agree with this take,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and I don't even I don't even know that I
- 24:03Speaker 1: agree with this take because I can't wait to see
- 24:05Speaker 1: where we go from here. We're here to talk about
- 24:07Speaker 1: the game where Dobbs and the Vikings play you. But like,
- 24:11Speaker 1: right now, it's perfection.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Yeah for this.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Who knows it could get better, it could get worse,
- 24:17Speaker 1: but in this moment, right now, to have him do
- 24:21Speaker 1: what he's done with so little knowledge and so little
- 24:26Speaker 1: you know time, the.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Little knowledge, he didn't even know the receiver's name.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Side and he didn't in the first one, he didn't
- 24:33Speaker 1: have Deresaw, he didn't have Jefferson. In the second one,
- 24:35Speaker 1: he didn't have Jefferson. It's wild. Yeah, now let's shift
- 24:40Speaker 1: here because I have no idea what in the hell
- 24:46Speaker 1: I need to make of what's happening in Denver. I
- 24:49Speaker 1: think it's difficult. It's difficult to go to Denver. It's
- 24:54Speaker 1: always difficult to go to Denver. But for you guys
- 24:57Speaker 1: to lose and give up seventy points to the Dolphins
- 25:01Speaker 1: in a way where literally every sports site on the
- 25:05Speaker 1: planet was like, you guys should just trade all your
- 25:07Speaker 1: players right now, you're the worst team. People treated them
- 25:11Speaker 1: like they were the little giants in the first act
- 25:14Speaker 1: of the movie. It was wild.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Oh, Peyton moranis is really.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Peyton Moranas is really turning this run. He's got a
- 25:23Speaker 1: real chip on his shoulder. But it's wild. It's wild
- 25:28Speaker 1: to see you guys now at four and five. It's
- 25:30Speaker 1: wild to see the Russ and Peyton thing kind of
- 25:34Speaker 1: working at times when it didn't seem like it was
- 25:38Speaker 1: earlier in the season. What do we need to make
- 25:42Speaker 1: of your Denver Broncos, Jimmy.
- 25:44Speaker 2: I think that's a tough question because the way they
- 25:47Speaker 2: are weak to week they're different, and the game against
- 25:51Speaker 2: the Chiefs was I don't even know how to explain that.
- 25:55Speaker 2: How do you surprise them and then come back and
- 25:59Speaker 2: surprise the Bills two weeks later? It's it doesn't make
- 26:02Speaker 2: any sense to me either. But when I when you
- 26:05Speaker 2: watch the game and watch the highlights and watch the
- 26:07Speaker 2: big plays and and try to dissect what what is happening?
- 26:10Speaker 2: Where where's it? I'm just happy to see that Russ
- 26:15Speaker 2: last week played his ass off. He's he's he He
- 26:18Speaker 2: had play after play that that worked. His he's he's
- 26:22Speaker 2: essentially running back to the to the Seahawks russ when
- 26:26Speaker 2: he when he played like Mahomes plays today, a flip here,
- 26:30Speaker 2: a flip there at the last minute, uh uh, spinning
- 26:34Speaker 2: out of tackles. But then two plays later he drops
- 26:38Speaker 2: back eight yards and gets pummeled by four highs. So
- 26:41Speaker 2: you'd never know what to expect by anybody, but everybody
- 26:45Speaker 2: is playing their ass. A plane lights out Sutton and
- 26:48Speaker 2: and Jerry Judy and Jerry Judy is really the wild
- 26:51Speaker 2: card in the X factor in the whole thing, I think,
- 26:53Speaker 2: because receiver one obviously is the most important to to
- 26:57Speaker 2: your past game, and he is he can change a
- 27:00Speaker 2: game in a second with a forty yard bomb if
- 27:03Speaker 2: he gets some sort of streak and he's open and
- 27:06Speaker 2: him between him and Sutton. But you know the other
- 27:09Speaker 2: part is that these boys are so young, these they
- 27:12Speaker 2: are barely men. And seeing interviews with Judy and Sutton
- 27:16Speaker 2: sitting side by side, and I'm just like, yeah, I
- 27:18Speaker 2: want to tussle their hair. They're so young, and we're
- 27:23Speaker 2: expecting them.
- 27:24Speaker 1: The expectations are a little high.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you're expecting these boys to play these men. It's
- 27:31Speaker 2: so hard to call them men because you see their
- 27:33Speaker 2: faces and they have baby faces, they're so young. But
- 27:36Speaker 2: then you see the athleticism that they can display, and
- 27:39Speaker 2: it is bananas. And if they both get on the
- 27:42Speaker 2: same page, if they both are on play either side
- 27:45Speaker 2: of the field and are able to stretch the field.
- 27:47Speaker 2: But then you gotta have the run game too, uh,
- 27:50Speaker 2: to let them be able to do what they're doing.
- 27:52Speaker 2: And that I think is what what Denver has missed
- 27:54Speaker 2: a lot is that they didn't have a run game.
- 27:57Speaker 2: The run game was is just terrible, and the Bills
- 28:01Speaker 2: gave up a lot of big runs that which left
- 28:04Speaker 2: them open to be able to stretch the field.
- 28:06Speaker 1: It was crazy that the Bills allowed that. Two things. One,
- 28:09Speaker 1: we're seeing exactly what you're talking about in Green Bay
- 28:12Speaker 1: right now, where you know, the expectations on young developing
- 28:16Speaker 1: receivers is quite high and it's gonna be hot. It's
- 28:20Speaker 1: gonna be hard for guys to meet that, especially when
- 28:22Speaker 1: maybe the quarterback isn't playing at a high level, although
- 28:25Speaker 1: it seems like Russ is rounding in shape. Secondly, and
- 28:28Speaker 1: maybe more importantly, why is it that Jerry Judy never
- 28:33Speaker 1: gets recognized as one of the funniest and best sports
- 28:37Speaker 1: names of all times.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Because there's.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It's spelled different and you don't even connect it. But
- 28:44Speaker 1: if you break it down, it's the name Jerry and
- 28:47Speaker 1: the name Judy, it'd be like, Oh, this is our
- 28:49Speaker 1: wide receiver Billy Tina. It's one of the best sports names,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and no one ever talks about it. We're just like, oh, yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 1: that's a man named Jerry Judy.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Cool. They are my grandfather and his sister's names.
- 29:04Speaker 1: It's exactly right. That's that's exactly right. The only way
- 29:09Speaker 1: that name, the only way that name is better. If
- 29:12Speaker 1: he's got if his middle name is two dy fruity,
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's fuck. It's a great, great name. I yeah, I don't.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I felt the same way about the Saints game. I
- 29:23Speaker 1: just don't like it. I don't until we can get
- 29:26Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson healthy and until we hit that bye week
- 29:30Speaker 1: and can really spend some time getting Dobbs integrated. Everything
- 29:35Speaker 1: that's happening to me is impressive. It's borderline magic, and
- 29:39Speaker 1: with that sort of stuff, you just you can't I
- 29:42Speaker 1: don't know if you can expect. If it keeps happening,
- 29:45Speaker 1: it's gonna be the pre eminent story of the season.
- 29:49Speaker 1: But it's this. This will be a challenging game because
- 29:52Speaker 1: there's there's some very talented people on that side. Uh,
- 29:56Speaker 1: they're gonna be on that side of the field. And
- 29:58Speaker 1: it's not gonna be the game that I think a
- 30:01Speaker 1: lot of Vikings fans thought it would be when we
- 30:04Speaker 1: watch them four or five weeks ago.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well, but you know this is this is probably
- 30:09Speaker 2: the gonna be the most fun game to watch. It
- 30:11Speaker 2: should be on paper and based on the last few weeks,
- 30:14Speaker 2: it should be the most fun game of the week
- 30:16Speaker 2: to watch because of the magic that's happening on both
- 30:19Speaker 2: sides in both places at the exact same time. Uh
- 30:23Speaker 2: and and and it's hard to pick a team to
- 30:25Speaker 2: root for unless you're an enormous fan of either one
- 30:27Speaker 2: because they're both they both have this this week. Really,
- 30:32Speaker 2: the season depends on a win for both. It's it's
- 30:35Speaker 2: not gonna it can it could It could make or
- 30:37Speaker 2: break either team.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Really, yeah, you jump you you guys. Get a loss here,
- 30:41Speaker 1: it's gonna be immensely difficult in a crowded AFC to
- 30:44Speaker 1: climb back from four and six. The Vikings can probably
- 30:47Speaker 1: survive a loss, but conversely, if they get a win,
- 30:52Speaker 1: and go to like the the the challenge of a
- 30:57Speaker 1: loss is outmatched by the potential of a win, So
- 31:02Speaker 1: I think you have to almost look at it as
- 31:03Speaker 1: like the big part of the loss isn't just that
- 31:06Speaker 1: your record drops, it's what you lost in. You just
- 31:09Speaker 1: beat two teams that are, you know, in theory competing.
- 31:12Speaker 1: One of them will likely be competing for your wild
- 31:15Speaker 1: card spot. I don't know. I think it's gonna be
- 31:18Speaker 1: really fun.
- 31:19Speaker 2: It should be, and and you know, Russ, I think
- 31:23Speaker 2: i'd really I wish, oh man, I wish we could
- 31:27Speaker 2: go back in time. I am so mad still, even
- 31:30Speaker 2: even with him being a little bit successful, I'm still
- 31:34Speaker 2: so mad about the whole contract, the whole signing. It
- 31:39Speaker 2: felt desperate at the time, and now fast forward two years,
- 31:43Speaker 2: it looks real damn desperate based on what was going
- 31:46Speaker 2: to be available and how those how those quarterbacks are
- 31:49Speaker 2: performing today. It's just it's so maddening, and I'm I
- 31:52Speaker 2: don't I don't know where to sit with it or
- 31:55Speaker 2: where to leave with it. And I just hope that
- 31:58Speaker 2: Pat's not rote sting somewhere over this because it's such
- 32:02Speaker 2: it's such a heartbreak that he's dead and doesn't doesn't
- 32:06Speaker 2: get to watch what they're doing to this organization.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Now, Jimmy, only you could spend thirty minutes having fun.
- 32:16Speaker 1: And then right as I'm about to wrap up and
- 32:19Speaker 1: ask you for a score prediction, You're like, oh, and
- 32:22Speaker 1: by the way, I hated our most important contract, And
- 32:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna mention our past away owner and I'm gonna
- 32:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna loop my projection of his opinion into my
- 32:34Speaker 1: opinion on the quarterback. Here, here's what I'll tell you
- 32:37Speaker 1: about Russ. I love a good NFL divorce. I much
- 32:42Speaker 1: like a good neighborhood divorce. Yeah, I am there to
- 32:47Speaker 1: see what happens. She said he never took out the trash,
- 32:53Speaker 1: and now she left, So I want to see what
- 32:55Speaker 1: happens with the trash in that house. Is he gonna
- 32:58Speaker 1: take it out because a spite or is he just
- 33:00Speaker 1: gonna have the stinkiest house in the world. Either way
- 33:03Speaker 1: is a fun answer to me. So the Brady Belichick split, yeah,
- 33:09Speaker 1: super fun. It's super interesting. The Pete Carroll of men
- 33:14Speaker 1: that I have not enjoyed in a football sense in
- 33:20Speaker 1: the last fifteen years. Uh, the way Russ has beat
- 33:25Speaker 1: my favorite team, and the way Pete Carroll has chewed
- 33:28Speaker 1: his gum. Has put me in a position where I
- 33:32Speaker 1: savor that divorce. And but I here's what I will say.
- 33:37Speaker 1: You ready for me to climb this. You did this.
- 33:39Speaker 1: You did this by bringing up Pat You could have
- 33:42Speaker 1: just you didn't have to. You could have invoked him
- 33:44Speaker 1: anywhere earlier in the show with a this this one's
- 33:47Speaker 1: for John. You could have brought up one of the
- 33:49Speaker 1: good moments. But you had to bring his ghost into this.
- 33:54Speaker 2: A wow.
- 33:55Speaker 1: And one of the one of the great examples in
- 33:59Speaker 1: sports is the other russ I. And this is not
- 34:02Speaker 1: a basketball show, But I do not understand the hate
- 34:06Speaker 1: for Russell Westbrook, a guy who accomplished everybody, well, he
- 34:11Speaker 1: just was a stat stuffer. I goen a lot of
- 34:13Speaker 1: stat stuffers in the history of the NBA. None of
- 34:15Speaker 1: them averaged a triple double for like half a decade.
- 34:18Speaker 1: You're the dumbest person to ever exist in sports. What
- 34:22Speaker 1: are you doing? But because his athleticism, the decline of
- 34:26Speaker 1: his athleticism saw, you know, led to a decline in
- 34:32Speaker 1: his ability, and his style no longer fit in the
- 34:34Speaker 1: modern NBA. It got pretty ugly. People just started heaving
- 34:39Speaker 1: shots at this guy who's never been anything but a
- 34:42Speaker 1: model citizen is And so the Russ thing, like, Russ
- 34:47Speaker 1: is a weird guy, right, the team three, the stretching
- 34:52Speaker 1: on a plane, like everything that goes with it, it's
- 34:56Speaker 1: it's weird. But I don't like everybody gets so on him.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I think he's just more willing to be open with
- 35:05Speaker 1: his weirdness. How many top of the world professional athletes
- 35:10Speaker 1: do you know that You're like, that's not a weird
- 35:12Speaker 1: person at all. Guess who I can guarantee is weird.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Let's just start listing them off.
- 35:18Speaker 2: All of them, every one of them.
- 35:20Speaker 1: At every famous comedian, you love, every top notch actor
- 35:24Speaker 1: to get to be the actual best at a thing
- 35:28Speaker 1: like Aaron Rodgers is probably the weirdest man on the planet,
- 35:34Speaker 1: and you need that weirdness to be like, you know,
- 35:39Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna be the greatest at a thing
- 35:42Speaker 1: that every human being wishes they were great at.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Every child tries to be good at.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And me, I will scale the mountain and stand to
- 35:54Speaker 1: top of it. So whenever anybody goes hard on Russ,
- 35:57Speaker 1: I'm quick to remember how ill it is. And maybe
- 36:01Speaker 1: it's true, Maybe he's the weirdest of the weird. Maybe
- 36:05Speaker 1: he's the guy at the newdest quality who won't stop
- 36:08Speaker 1: doing cartwheels. Maybe, but I don't know. I give a
- 36:13Speaker 1: little bit longer leash than most people.
- 36:15Speaker 2: I it frustrates me because it feels like his weirdness
- 36:20Speaker 2: distracts them from what we do, and that's play damn
- 36:24Speaker 2: football and win football games. We were one of the
- 36:27Speaker 2: I think the winningest NFL team for three or four
- 36:31Speaker 2: years historically, and then the last couple of years have
- 36:35Speaker 2: really put a botch in that. But they were. They
- 36:39Speaker 2: win games, and whether they win the season or the
- 36:42Speaker 2: super Bowl or a playoff game, it doesn't matter. But
- 36:45Speaker 2: those sixteen games those seventeen weeks matter and now more.
- 36:50Speaker 2: But they matter and we win. And with him, that
- 36:54Speaker 2: has not been a thing. And from day one he
- 36:57Speaker 2: has been in the news and now thankfully it's starting
