- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way, joined by the producer Cameron Parker. We're with
- 0:03Speaker 1: you up till five o'clock. Don't forget Texas women's basketball
- 0:05Speaker 1: tonight at seven. You can hear that on one oh
- 0:08Speaker 1: three point one FM, Austin's eighty station, as Texas takes
- 0:12Speaker 1: on Lasal the Explorers. Did you when you just hear
- 0:17Speaker 1: the name Lassalle and hear LaSalle Explorers, do you grasp
- 0:24Speaker 1: a particular imagery of who they were named for and
- 0:27Speaker 1: all that stuff?
- 0:28Speaker 2: I do not?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Okay, all right, that's good. That's good because you start
- 0:32Speaker 1: with a clean slate. You see. Most people think that
- 0:37Speaker 1: Lassau University was named for the explorer, the French explorer
- 0:44Speaker 1: lasal Uh, and therefore the name being the Explorers. There
- 0:53Speaker 1: was a Baltimore sports writer covering a Lassal football game
- 0:58Speaker 1: when they had football back in the eighteen thirty one
- 1:01Speaker 1: who alluded to Lesalles being named for the French explorer
- 1:04Speaker 1: Lessal not true. The school was named for Saint John
- 1:15Speaker 1: Baptist de la Sal. Saint John Baptist de la Sal.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The irony is they were playing a team in Maryland
- 1:25Speaker 1: called Saint John's, not the Saint John's in New York
- 1:27Speaker 1: but they were playing football on that as the folks
- 1:31Speaker 1: at LASAL likes to say where the two events related.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Will never know for sure, but the LaSalle Explorers are
- 1:38Speaker 1: in Philadelphia. They're not named for the French explorer LASAL.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It is a private, Catholic based institution. But the Long
- 1:49Speaker 1: Orange will take on a LASAL team that is six
- 1:52Speaker 1: and five their wins over Delaware. Writer Lee h, I
- 1:56Speaker 1: mean it's going to be area regional wins Loyola Chicago
- 2:00Speaker 1: and they beat something called chestnut Hill. There was a
- 2:05Speaker 1: team called Chestnut Hill. The only chestnut Hill I'm aware
- 2:09Speaker 1: of is in Massachusetts where Boston College is, so I'm
- 2:11Speaker 1: not sure what that is. Their losses are to Maine, Drexel, Virginia, Temple,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and Penn, so we'll see. Meanwhile, the Longhorns will roll
- 2:25Speaker 1: into the game at ten and one and looking to
- 2:31Speaker 1: get one more nice one before they get to the
- 2:33Speaker 1: final game before the Christmas break, when they play South
- 2:37Speaker 1: Dakota State. Now, they're going to get a good test
- 2:39Speaker 1: from South Dakota State and annual NCAA tournament participant and
- 2:43Speaker 1: Sweet sixteen party crasher and all that sort of stuff
- 2:47Speaker 1: allowed that may not get quite as big a test
- 2:50Speaker 1: tonight from La Sala. They'll get on Sunday, but I
- 2:54Speaker 1: think they'll definitely get one on Sunday. Of course, the
- 2:57Speaker 1: Longhorn men will be in action on Thursday against the
- 3:00Speaker 1: Privateers of New Orleans, who apparently have one of the
- 3:06Speaker 1: logos that Cameron Parker admires more than any other in
- 3:10Speaker 1: collegiate athletics. Is it right?
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's right? And they also have one of them an
- 3:16Speaker 2: assistant coach who I admire more than any other assistant coach,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and that's because it's Jeffon Felix, the former Longhorn legend
- 3:24Speaker 2: and one of the most I think clutch bucket getters
- 3:26Speaker 2: in all of Texas basketball history. I always remember his
- 3:30Speaker 2: game win he shot against North Carolina at the Irwin Center.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I think I was somewhere in North Carolina wearing burn orange,
- 3:37Speaker 2: cheering my foot off with my dad and loved Washington
- 3:41Speaker 2: play basketball for Texas during that time period. Excited to
- 3:44Speaker 2: have him back in Austin. I think Texas fans will
- 3:47Speaker 2: as well.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a great dude. Javon phelicks had He made
- 3:54Speaker 1: some big shots. Other than that one. I can remember
- 3:57Speaker 1: a huge one he made at Kansas State when they
- 4:01Speaker 1: beat Kansas State and he had a big game against
- 4:04Speaker 1: Kansas State. I remember that, uh, and that was a
- 4:09Speaker 1: game where he was going into it where where I
- 4:12Speaker 1: think he'd had like, for want of a better phrase,
- 4:18Speaker 1: kind of a groin injury. And I asked him how
- 4:22Speaker 1: he felt and said, all right, I said, so everything
- 4:24Speaker 1: is okay with a groin? He said well, and then
- 4:26Speaker 1: he said some blue and off color things about it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: He said, but I'll be ready to go and uh
- 4:31Speaker 1: so and he went out and he played really really well.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I remember that Javan is a great guy, uh from
- 4:37Speaker 1: New Orleans and a chance to go back there.
- 4:38Speaker 2: So yeah, we'll look.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You know, it'll be it'll be good uh for Javon Phelips.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Hopefully they give him a good amount of that that
- 4:48Speaker 1: he'll be recognized and a Republic address I think, and
- 4:52Speaker 1: then given given some proper due on Thursday night for
- 4:58Speaker 1: that one. So h it'll be good to know that
- 5:02Speaker 1: he's back in town. I won't actually be able to
- 5:05Speaker 1: be there to be that game. Roger will call that
- 5:07Speaker 1: game with Eddie Orn. I'll be in Arlington, as we
- 5:10Speaker 1: talked about earlier, I'm going to be up there for
- 5:12Speaker 1: the calling the UIL State football Championships for television. Six
- 5:16Speaker 1: of those. Obviously, I'll be back for the Texas Clemson
- 5:19Speaker 1: game on Saturday. I'm not doing the two six A
- 5:21Speaker 1: games on Saturday. But speaking of which, coming up in
- 5:29Speaker 1: a few minutes, we're going to visit with Drew Sanders,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the head coach of the Vandergriff Vipers. Vandergriff has and
- 5:35Speaker 1: has had and he's the only coach the program's ever known.
- 5:40Speaker 1: He's been there since I think two thousand and three,
- 5:42Speaker 1: so he's the only coach the program has ever known.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And they've had a tradition for a long time winning,
- 5:49Speaker 1: winning lots of games, winning a lot of district championships.
- 5:52Speaker 1: They've had some undefeated regular seasons, and they've had some
- 5:56Speaker 1: good playoff runs, getting into the quarterfinals, getting into the
- 6:00Speaker 1: semifinals once. They've only been to the state championship one
- 6:04Speaker 1: other time. That was two years ago. They lost to
- 6:06Speaker 1: a Desota team that Trey Wisner had a big game
- 6:13Speaker 1: that afternoon for Desota, and there were several Longhorns who
- 6:17Speaker 1: are involved in that, John Tay Cook, who has now
- 6:20Speaker 1: since left the program entering the portal, but there were
- 6:25Speaker 1: several future Longhorns who were part of that program coming
- 6:30Speaker 1: up that were either seniors or juniors or sophomores and
- 6:33Speaker 1: Quin Travian Wisner and he wasn't going by Quintravian. We
- 6:37Speaker 1: were told by Claude Mathis, the head coach that week
- 6:43Speaker 1: in the conference calls, that he preferred to go by Trey,
- 6:46Speaker 1: so we called him Trey the whole telecast. We've since
- 6:49Speaker 1: learned that Trey wants to honor his mom's wishes and
- 6:57Speaker 1: go by quin Travian at least in first reference, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: so that's what we've we've tried to do here over
- 7:03Speaker 1: the past few weeks. We've done call him Quintravian and
- 7:06Speaker 1: then and then come back with Trey in a second reference,
- 7:09Speaker 1: but then call them Quintravian again. So just so we'll
- 7:12Speaker 1: have that. If you talked to Sart, he's of course
- 7:15Speaker 1: been used to him being Trey, so he has called
- 7:19Speaker 1: him uh Trey. But anyway, Uh Vandergriff lost to Desta
- 7:25Speaker 1: that year two years ago, but they're back now. And
- 7:30Speaker 1: two years ago they were looked as a team that
- 7:33Speaker 1: probably should be there, but could they break through. They did.
- 7:37Speaker 1: This year's team was looked at as one that was good,
- 7:41Speaker 1: but maybe not good enough to get first of all
- 7:43Speaker 1: through Region four, where a good Sybilo Steel team was
- 7:48Speaker 1: well they thumped them. And then certainly to go up
- 7:51Speaker 1: against a Summer Crank team Kelvin Banks alma mater by
- 7:55Speaker 1: the way, and coached by a lifetime Longhorning Kenny Harrison,
- 7:58Speaker 1: a team that got to the State eight finals before
- 8:00Speaker 1: losing to the Soda last year. That a team that
- 8:08Speaker 1: was probably going to take them out. There were a
- 8:10Speaker 1: lot of people. I think the computer had Summer Creek
- 8:13Speaker 1: favored by ten points or projected to win by ten
- 8:16Speaker 1: A lot of people thought Summer Creak it was just
- 8:18Speaker 1: another step along the way, and they jumped to a
- 8:20Speaker 1: fourteen nothingly, then they were up ten points late in
- 8:23Speaker 1: the first half at twenty four to fourteen, and then
- 8:27Speaker 1: Vandergrift flipped the script and turned it around.
