- 0:06Speaker 2: We all start out trying to find it the right way to parent the method that makes it all turn out the way it's supposed to.
- 0:18Speaker 2: But the truth is there's no formula for parenting.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's a messy growing, evolving relationship.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Between messy growing, evolving people.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm Cheryl Lang with the Parenting Podcast, and today we're talking about letting go of the myth of figuring it out.
- 0:52Cheryl New: Hey Kyla, welcome back to TPP.
- 0:54Kyla: Hi, Cheryl.
- 0:55Kyla: Good to be here.
- 0:56Kyla: And Christie.
- 0:56Kyla: Hi.
- 0:57Kyla: So fun to have you.
- 0:58Kyla: All right,
- 0:59Cheryl New: so, um, actually Kyla yesterday, Christie and I were with a friend all of us are empty nesters.
- 1:07Cheryl New: We all have grown children and so we're seasoned.
- 1:11Cheryl New: and we were talking about parenting And when we got talking some of the struggles of parenting and what we would do with it, and we kind of said.
- 1:23Cheryl New: Actually, I think the big lie in parenting is we're gonna figure it out.
- 1:28Cheryl New: Mm.
- 1:28Cheryl New: And we're going to get that answer.
- 1:31Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 1:31Cheryl New: That whatever 10,000 years of parenting hasn't figured out yet.
- 1:37Cheryl New: And I just thought, you know, what lies did you bring into parenting?
- 1:42Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 1:42Cheryl New: Or where did you struggle?
- 1:44Cheryl New: How about if we just process that struggle we all have of.
- 1:48Cheryl New: Looking for that answer.
- 1:50Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 1:50Cheryl New: Turning that corner, you know, figuring parenting out.
- 1:54Cheryl New: So we're doing the right thing and our children don't struggle and they end up going into adulthood.
- 2:01Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 2:01Cheryl New: Polished with no big problem without carrying
- 2:04Christie: any of the baggage.
- 2:05Christie: Right.
- 2:05Christie: Of our messy parenting.
- 2:06Christie: Yeah.
- 2:07Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 2:07Christie: Yeah.
- 2:07Christie: For me, one of the things that I really, I, I dunno that I would've articulated this way if you would've asked me, but I was operating as though there was.
- 2:18Christie: One set way of parenting.
- 2:20Christie: Yep.
- 2:20Christie: And it was up to me to figure it out.
- 2:22Christie: Yep.
- 2:22Christie: And whatever it was, was going to make my kids perfect and happy and, you know, unscathed from life and it was going to make them like me.
- 2:34Christie: And I was just on this search for it.
- 2:37Cheryl New: Christie, you just articulate exactly the way I thought Uhhuh.
- 2:42Cheryl New: I think kind of everybody thinks that whatever, whatever their background mm-hmm.
- 2:47Cheryl New: Uh, of childhood, you know, even like my parents, I felt loved as, as well as they knew how.
- 2:55Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 2:55Cheryl New: And I had what would be definitely considered a safe, happy childhood.
- 3:00Cheryl New: It was messy, but I ended up okay.
- 3:03Cheryl New: And so I go, okay, I've got kind of a boost up here.
- 3:07Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 3:07Cheryl New: Now I'm gonna figure it out and do it really well.
- 3:10Cheryl New: Right.
- 3:11Cheryl New: For all those reasons you just mentioned.
- 3:13Kyla: Right.
- 3:14Kyla: Uh, and just you saying that they'd like me before you said that, I hadn't really thought of that.
- 3:19Kyla: That's a kind of been an underlying expectation.
- 3:22Kyla: Kind of an expectation, not just the hope.
- 3:24Kyla: I mean.
- 3:25Kyla: But a lot of times they don't, especially when things are rough in their life.
- 3:29Kyla: Uhhuh or having to, you know, give a consequence
- 3:32Cheryl New: well, you know, you were in here, we're talking about boundaries, right?
- 3:35Cheryl New: The problem is, if we did everything our children want, I can't even imagine what that would be.
- 3:41Cheryl New: But if we could do everything the way they wanted it, particularly during the teen years mm-hmm.
- 3:46Cheryl New: We might be more popular.
- 3:49Christie: Well, we might for the moment.
- 3:50Christie: Yeah.
- 3:50Christie: But there are things that my adult kids have said, you should have never let me do that.
- 3:54Christie: Yeah.
- 3:55Christie: And so their future selves may not be a big fan of us, and so it really is.
- 4:01Christie: The truth to that lie is that.
- 4:05Christie: There's no cure all.
- 4:07Christie: There's no one fix.
- 4:09Christie: There's no method or big stamp of approval on parenting your kids because every kid is different.
- 4:17Christie: Every circumstance is different.
- 4:18Christie: What their future looks like is different.
- 4:20Christie: You are different than the mom next door.
- 4:23Christie: There's just not a one size fits all.
- 4:25Cheryl New: Well, and why would we want the immaturity, self-focused selfishness?
- 4:31Cheryl New: Uh, uh, pride and all of that of childhood.
- 4:36Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 4:37Cheryl New: To dictate how we parent.
- 4:39Cheryl New: Right.
- 4:39Christie: Exactly.
- 4:40Cheryl New: Because I'm not finished.
- 4:42Cheryl New: I'm still work in progress, but I'm a whole lot more mature than they are.
- 4:46Christie: I just had this thought occur to me that parenting, you know, say you're parenting a 7-year-old Yeah.
- 4:51Christie: As a people pleaser, and you're just.
- 4:53Christie: Doing everything to make them happy.
- 4:55Christie: That's the equivalent of going and finding some rev random 7-year-old and asking for parenting advice.
- 5:01Christie: That's
- 5:01Cheryl New: true.
- 5:02Cheryl New: That's what I was just saying.
- 5:03Cheryl New: Why would I listen to them uhhuh?
- 5:05Cheryl New: Because they're clearly.
- 5:08Cheryl New: Only want what they want at that moment.
- 5:10Cheryl New: And you know, you were saying different children, different things.
- 5:14Cheryl New: So the introverted feelers in our family needed and wanted a certain kind of parent.
- 5:21Cheryl New: Right.
- 5:22Cheryl New: And the aggressive extrovert, uh.
- 5:25Cheryl New: Rule breaker type person.
- 5:27Cheryl New: They wanted
- 5:28Cheryl New (2): something very different! I would've had to have been five different parents to five different people at the same time.
- 5:36Cheryl New (2): Right.
- 5:36Cheryl New (2): And through every whim and stage.
- 5:39Cheryl New (2): No wonder we're exhausted when we're trying to do that.
- 5:41Christie: Yeah.
- 5:42Christie: I remember because you just described my first two children, the opposites that they are, and I remember trying to parent my second child identically to how I had spent 2, 3, 4 years, my first child, and that was probably one of my earliest peak, that this might be a lie.
- 6:02Christie: I am believing.
- 6:03Christie: Wow.
- 6:04Christie: Oh, this child needs different things than the first child and they're receiving me in a much different way.
- 6:10=: Mm-hmm.
- 6:11Christie: And you know, 25 years later now Yeah.
- 6:14Christie: I'm realizing that is still true.
- 6:16Kyla: Ugh.
- 6:16Kyla: So you guys are saying it's good, normal and positive as a mature parent to be the decision maker, which will cause frustration and conflict and unpleasantness in your home.
- 6:30Kyla: Yes.
- 6:30Kyla: Yes.
- 6:32Cheryl: we're
- 6:34Cheryl New: So what we're doing is if we're doing the right thing, I mean the right thing for our children.
- 6:41Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 6:42Cheryl New: And the mature thing, we're gonna make our job harder.
- 6:44Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 6:45Cheryl New: In the long, I mean, that really is it.
- 6:48Christie (2): Yeah.
- 6:48Christie (2): The easy way out is just to give them everything they want.
- 6:53Cheryl New (2): I came into parenting thinking my children wanted what I wanted out of life.
- 6:58Cheryl New (2): Oh, that's good.
- 6:59Cheryl New (2): And out of relationships.
- 7:00Cheryl New (2): That's good.
- 7:00Cheryl New (2): And so what I wanted was affection, warmth, positivity, um, pursuing me and, all that nurturing relationship, I was just really high in it.
- 7:13Cheryl New (2): And I thought, oh, if I give that to my children, that will fill all of their cups.
- 7:18Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 7:18Cheryl New (2): Okay.
- 7:19Cheryl New (2): And it's a good thing to bring to parenting, right?
- 7:21Cheryl New (2): But it's not at all, the whole everything.
- 7:24Cheryl New (2): And it lacks.
- 7:27Cheryl New (2): I didn't know.
- 7:28Cheryl New (2): I'd have to tell'em no so much.
- 7:30Cheryl New (2): Mm.
- 7:30Cheryl New (2): I thought no would be something I only kind of pulled out.
- 7:33Cheryl New (2): occasionally, I have to reach into the no.
- 7:36Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 7:36=: I
- 7:36Cheryl New: have to reach into the boundary and the hard line.
- 7:39Cheryl New: I just thought, particularly going into teen years, I thought, oh, we're all so much more mature now.
- 7:45Cheryl New: Right.
- 7:46Cheryl New: That I wouldn't have to say it much Uhhuh.
- 7:48Cheryl New: I thought I could just be the friend.
- 7:50Cheryl New: Right?
- 7:50Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 7:50=: Mm-hmm.
- 7:51Christie: Yeah.
- 7:52Christie: I think that was one for me too.
- 7:54Christie: You know,
- 7:54=: my
- 7:55Christie: great kids love'em to death, but I underestimated their, um, willingness to do wrong things.
- 8:04Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 8:05Christie: You know, whether it be not telling the truth about something or just working things out to their advantage, or maybe, you know, being the.
- 8:16Christie: The friend that didn't handle things appropriately or you know, just general things like that.
- 8:22Christie: I thought they would not do those things.
- 8:25Christie: I just thought they would be lovely all the time.
- 8:27Christie: Exactly.
- 8:28Christie: And let lie that I thought
- 8:30Cheryl New: if I could be this.
- 8:31Cheryl New: Loving, caring, genuine.
- 8:34Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 8:34Cheryl New: It wasn't fake.
- 8:35Cheryl New: I genuinely really love my children and I have a great relationship.
- 8:39Cheryl New: They felt safe with me.
- 8:40Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 8:41Cheryl New: All of that sort of stuff.
- 8:42Cheryl New: I thought if I did all that, they wouldn't lie to me.
- 8:45Cheryl New: Right.
- 8:45Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 8:46Cheryl New: You forgot they were actual
- 8:48Kyla: humans.
- 8:48Kyla: Yes.
- 8:50Kyla: Well, I'm really processing that.
- 8:52Kyla: My children may not want the same things as me.
- 8:56Kyla: Oh.
- 8:56Kyla: But that's really valuing who they are and letting them be authentically themselves with their personalities and bents and tendencies.
- 9:04Kyla: But you're right, Cheryl, I think a lot of times I would say, well, I wouldn't have done that.
- 9:09Kyla: You know?
- 9:09Kyla: And then feeling what's wrong with how I parented, Yeah.
- 9:13Kyla: Just
- 9:13Christie: assuming that we're all the same inside, that we have the same motives.
- 9:17Christie: Yeah.
- 9:17Christie: Or love languages or, that's so narrow
- 9:18Kyla: minded.
- 9:19Kyla: But, uh.
- 9:20Kyla: When you have, especially more than one kid, and different personalities, oh my goodness.
- 9:25Kyla: You're really thrown for a loop.
- 9:28Cheryl New (2): Well, and it's always changing.
- 9:29Cheryl New (2): We always say here on the podcast.
- 9:32Cheryl New (2): Everything is always changing, you know?
- 9:35Cheryl New (2): You're one person and then you get married.
- 9:37Cheryl New (2): Now we're two people and we have to deal with all that.
- 9:39Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 9:40Cheryl New (2): Then you have a baby that's three people.
- 9:41Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 9:42Cheryl New (2): You get a fourth and they're relating and each of you is relating, and as your family grows or a new age.
- 9:49Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 9:50Cheryl New (2): We've never had a teenager before.
- 9:52Cheryl New (2): We've never had whatever it is, all the dimensions, and to think that if we just.
- 9:58Cheryl New (2): Curated it a little bit, whatever it is.
- 10:01Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 10:01Cheryl New (2): It would fix it.
- 10:03Cheryl New (2): Right.
- 10:03Christie: I just thought I could fix it.
- 10:06Kyla: Yeah, for sure.
- 10:07Christie: Yeah.
- 10:07Christie: Well, and fix it says that I am right.
- 10:11Cheryl New: Oh, that's true.
- 10:11Cheryl New: You know, I
- 10:11Christie: mean, I'm just thinking of what you just described with all the different variables in our kids' lives from really from, you know, maybe two years old when they first have their first influences of a, a playmate or a TV show or whatever.
- 10:26Christie: And then move on into the trajectory of the rest of their lives.
- 10:30Christie: There's a million variables.
- 10:32=: Yeah.
- 10:32Christie: And some of them are better than what I would choose.
- 10:35Christie: Yeah.
- 10:36Christie: Or you know, some of their personalities or gifts or opinions are actually now in my real time, real life are setting me straight on some things.
- 10:45Christie: Yeah.
- 10:45Christie: And so it takes humility to learn from our kids as they're growing and developing and you know, adult humans.
- 10:52Kyla: Yeah.
- 10:53Kyla: The ability to say, I'm, I'm wrong.
- 10:56Kyla: Mm-hmm.
- 10:56Kyla: Yeah.
- 10:57Kyla: I apologize for that.
- 10:59Cheryl New: Well, and what you just said, what incredible hubris is the word I think, which is putting pride into action that.
- 11:10Cheryl New: I would think all my children should see life my way.
- 11:15=: Mm-hmm.
- 11:16Cheryl New: And walk with me and agree with me and want.
- 11:20Cheryl New: Uh, everything I want instead of Sure.
- 11:22Cheryl New: Flourishing as their own beautiful selves.
- 11:27Cheryl New: Different ways.
- 11:28Cheryl New: And you know what a boring picture.
- 11:30Cheryl New: I'm looking at the wall here and it's real nice, but the decorations are all just shades of gray.
- 11:36Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 11:36Cheryl New: And
- 11:37Cheryl New (2): I don't want My family to be shades of gray.
- 11:39Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 11:40Cheryl New (2): And if they all did things my way, we would just all be real nice shades of gray or all shades of pink in a nice, tidy, easy life.
- 11:49Kyla: But how boring.
- 11:50Kyla: Right.
- 11:51Cheryl New: And it's not
- 11:51Christie: reality, right?
- 11:52Christie: Yeah.
- 11:52Christie: Yeah.
- 11:52Christie: It's just.
- 11:53Christie: I wasn't steeped in reality.
- 11:55Christie: Right.
- 11:55Christie: And some of those different shades or variants can be painful and can be hard and and Stomaching, that is a little bit of an adjustment too, that there will be hard things in my kids' life that in the long run will make them even more beautiful of who they are becoming to be.
- 12:14Christie: Yes.
- 12:15Christie: Is through that hardship or through that challenge or through that?
- 12:19Christie: No, the sad thing that you wanted to protect them from,
- 12:22Cheryl New: and this is so self revelatory, everything we're saying.
- 12:27Cheryl New: I know.
- 12:27Cheryl New: Welcome TPP to our counseling session and one of the things that I used to say, and now I say it to my grandchildren, is.
- 12:35Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 12:36Cheryl New: There's nothing you could do that would make me love you more and there's nothing you can do that would make me love you less.
- 12:41Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 12:42Cheryl New: And see, as a people pleaser, I thought I could always do something, would make somebody love me more, right?
- 12:47Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 12:47Cheryl New: Right.
- 12:48Cheryl New: And then with our children, with all the variations.
- 12:52Cheryl New: If it's only my way, then I'm saying, oh yeah, there's always something you could do that would make me love you more.
- 12:58Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 12:59Cheryl New: And instead of loving them for who they are and letting them flourish their way, whatever that is.
- 13:06Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 13:07Cheryl New: Um, I'm so thankful to recognize that what I thought is a lie.
- 13:13Christie: Yeah.
- 13:14Cheryl New: And that they can be who they are created to be.
- 13:17Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 13:18Cheryl New: Instead of who I'm curating them to be.
- 13:20Kyla: Right.
- 13:21Kyla: Hmm.
- 13:22Kyla: And to realize too, in, in those seasons, those different shades, those different trials, they're not always going to like me.
- 13:29Kyla: Yeah.
- 13:30Kyla: And that's that.
- 13:32Kyla: It's kind of a lie that I still struggle with
- 13:35Christie: ing.
- 13:35Christie: Yeah, same.
- 13:37Christie: I mean, even now into adult kids, I, I do, I want them to like me.
- 13:42Christie: I want them to like all aspects of me.
- 13:44Christie: It's true.
- 13:45Christie: You know.
- 13:46Christie: I think that is hard to stomach.
- 13:48Christie: But even speaks to what you're saying, Cheryl, if, if I can come to terms with things that they might not like about me and I might not like about them.
- 13:58Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 13:58Christie: Like we just ha there's people in this world that.
- 14:01Christie: You wouldn't choose to be friends with or there's just something that rubs you wrong and that's love.
- 14:07Christie: Right.
- 14:08Christie: Loving your children in spite of those differences.
- 14:12Christie: Wow.
- 14:12Christie: Yeah, and they, they hopefully grow to a place of maturity that they can reciprocate that.
- 14:17Kyla: That's good.
- 14:18Cheryl New: There was some movie one time, and I have no idea what it was., And it said, well, I just can't love people in slices.
- 14:26Cheryl New: Oh, I've
- 14:27Christie: never heard that.
- 14:28Cheryl New: Isn't that great?
- 14:29Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 14:29Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 14:30Christie: Okay.
- 14:30Cheryl New (2): Don't have to enjoy it all all the time.
- 14:32Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 14:32Christie: Yeah.
- 14:32Christie: I can
- 14:33Cheryl New: like parts of you, but I can't
- 14:34Cheryl New (2): love
- 14:35Cheryl New: parts of you,
- 14:35Cheryl New (2): Uhhuh.
- 14:36Cheryl New (2): We have to love the total package.
- 14:38Cheryl New (2): Hmm.
- 14:39Cheryl New (2): Oh, that's really, that's such a beautiful way to look at love.
- 14:42Cheryl New (2): So if we can start walking with this and embrace them instead of the lie of what I am believing, that that's what they take into adulthood.
- 14:51Cheryl New (2): then.
- 14:52=: Mm-hmm.
- 14:52Cheryl New: Rather than taking, oh, my mom did it all right.
- 14:55Cheryl New: And oh, by the way, that's one of the lies I thought.
- 14:57Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 14:58Cheryl New: That when they got to be adults, they would look back and go, wow, mom, you did it all right.
- 15:02Cheryl New: You know?
- 15:02Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 15:02Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 15:03Kyla: That's it.
- 15:04Kyla: And then who could fill those shoes?
- 15:05Kyla: Right.
- 15:05Kyla: You know,
- 15:06Christie: I mean, but that's our unspoken goal, right?
- 15:08Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 15:08Christie: Is the perfectionism.
- 15:09Christie: Yeah, and wanting to be the perfect parent for our own pride and for their sake.
- 15:15Christie: That's true.
- 15:16Cheryl New: Then we would be saying, there's just one way kids.
- 15:20Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 15:20Cheryl New: You have to do it my way.
- 15:23Cheryl New: Mm.
- 15:23Cheryl New: That's the only way to get perfect children, perfect parents.
- 15:26Cheryl New: Right.
- 15:27Cheryl New: Um, just so
- 15:27Christie: many lies.
- 15:28Christie: I just had a conversation with my daughter who now has a daughter and we were talking about mothering and having that conversation about she is.
- 15:37Christie: Doing a lot of things very different than the way I did things, and just giving her affirmation that that is how it's meant to be.
- 15:46Christie: Yes.
- 15:46Christie: Like she can look at my mistakes and really she's not even responding to all mistakes.
- 15:52Christie: Just preferences.
- 15:53Christie: Yeah.
- 15:53Christie: In some ways of how to raise her daughter and.
- 15:57Christie: You know there are layers of that that rub my heart right now because I'm immature and prideful there are things that I'm like, Ooh, does that mean she disagrees with what I did there or does that mean, but when I can.
- 16:11Christie: Um, get my mind to a space that says, of course not.
- 16:14Christie: She is being her full self as a woman, as a mother.
- 16:18Christie: Wow.
- 16:19Christie: She is doing exactly what she's called to do for her child, and that means nothing of what I did right, wrong this, that, or the other.
- 16:28Christie: It's just the way it's supposed to be.
- 16:31Kyla: And what?
- 16:31Kyla: Maturity and conflict.
- 16:33Kyla: That's the word.
- 16:33Kyla: Like I said, it's spotty.
- 16:35Cheryl New: Uhhuh, and I'm thinking about that relationship bridge, Uhhuh.
- 16:38Cheryl New: Okay.
- 16:38Cheryl New: Here our children are, they're stumbling through life and through parenting, through teen years.
- 16:46Cheryl New: All of this, just like we did.
- 16:48Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 16:49Cheryl New: And what a beautiful thing.
- 16:51Cheryl New: That relationship bridge, you just said, Hey, I'm not putting rocks on it.
- 16:56Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 16:56Cheryl New: You have to do it my way.
- 16:58Cheryl New: No expectations on it.
- 17:00Cheryl New: I love you.
- 17:01Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 17:01Cheryl New: I wanna support you and walk with you how safe she feels to walk across that bridge and be your friend to be in a relationship with you and not always feel defensive.
- 17:12Cheryl New: Like, I offended
- 17:13Kyla: mom.
- 17:14Kyla: Yeah.
- 17:14Kyla: Yeah.
- 17:15Kyla: She's offended because.
- 17:16Kyla: You know, I doing something different.
- 17:19Christie: Well, when I look back, that was a lot of my parenting was out of insecurities of myself for sure.
- 17:24Christie: You know, like, oh, I don't want them to feel like I did as a teen, or I don't want them to experience life this way.
- 17:29Christie: Because that's how I feel and that is just operating out of my insecurity.
- 17:35Christie: I will tell you, when I think about my
- 17:37Cheryl New: mom, she's of course been gone a while.
- 17:39Cheryl New: I was shocked at what a great job she did accepting me because I did a whole lot of things different,
- 17:48=: different
- 17:48Cheryl New: choices.
- 17:49Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 17:50Cheryl New: Than my parents did.
- 17:51Cheryl New: Okay.
- 17:52Cheryl New: And I felt so safe with her.
- 17:55Cheryl New: I never felt like I had to defend it and say, now mom, I mean, I might talk about why I was doing it.
- 18:00Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 18:01Cheryl New: But just like.
- 18:01Cheryl New: That conversation you're having with your daughter, full safe walk back and forth across a six lane bridge.
- 18:07Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 18:08Cheryl New: And I never felt like I was on the defensive about it.
- 18:11Cheryl New: Oh, that's
- 18:11Christie: so good.
- 18:12Cheryl New: You know, even though it was very different from the choices and or preferences.
- 18:17Christie: Yeah.
- 18:17Cheryl New: That my parents did.
- 18:19Cheryl New: She just said, you go for it, girl.
- 18:21Cheryl New: You keep doing it.
- 18:22Cheryl New: What a gift.
- 18:23Cheryl New: It's amazing.
- 18:23Cheryl New: It was beautiful.
- 18:25Cheryl New: Built such confidence in me.
- 18:27Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 18:27Cheryl New: As a young parent, as someone stumbling my way through life, and it laid groundwork for how I wanted to love my children.
- 18:35Cheryl New: I love that.
- 18:36Cheryl New: That's good.
- 18:37Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 18:38Kyla: Well, a lie.
- 18:39Kyla: I think that's common that people believe, parents believe, that I have believed is that, uh, I would see their heart change, like, you know, that I would be able to see it.
- 18:50Kyla: Hmm.
- 18:51Kyla: Kind of quickly.
- 18:53Kyla: Mm-hmm.
- 18:53Kyla: Mm-hmm.
- 18:53Kyla: Instead of, I mean, I guess waiting sometimes years, decades, never,
- 18:57Cheryl New: you know?
- 18:58Cheryl New: I know.
- 18:58Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 19:00Cheryl New: It's really hard.
- 19:01Christie: Yeah.
- 19:01Christie: We can't make that fruit grow.
- 19:03Christie: Right.
- 19:04Christie: You know?
- 19:04Christie: And some of it is, um.
- 19:07Christie: You know, self-driven, that we just wanna see the results of our efforts.
- 19:10Christie: Yeah.
- 19:10Christie: But a lot of it is just the pain of knowing that they're suffering consequences.
- 19:16Christie: Yep.
- 19:16Christie: Mm-hmm.
- 19:16Christie: Based on where their heart is at.
- 19:19Christie: Right?
- 19:20Christie: Yeah.
- 19:20Christie: It's really hard.
- 19:21Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 19:21Cheryl New: And, but look at us combined age.
- 19:24Cheryl New: Here we go over a hundred.
- 19:26Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 19:26Cheryl New: Way over a hundred.
- 19:28Cheryl New: And we're still saying, boy, we're just figuring life out all along here.
- 19:33Cheryl New: You know, I've never been this old before.
- 19:35Cheryl New: Right.
- 19:36Cheryl New: And I'm saying I am discovering new things about life and myself and how to love others better all the time.
- 19:44Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 19:46Cheryl New: What in the world that we think our children would get it fixed?
- 19:49Christie: Right.
- 19:50Christie: If the tables were turned and they had the luxury or the liberty to speak into our lives, I'm sure they would recognize a lot of things they wished were different in our hearts.
- 19:59Christie: Yeah.
- 19:59Christie: Yes.
- 20:00Kyla: Yeah.
- 20:00Christie: And that's grace, right?
- 20:02Christie: It's extending grace to our kids to be where they're at on the spectrum of life and you know, maturity and change.
- 20:11Christie (2): And The same for us.
- 20:13Christie (2): I mean, I know I need grace for my kids, so Wow.
- 20:16Christie (2): I've gotta, I've gotta give it.
- 20:18Cheryl New: Mm, you're exactly right.
- 20:20Cheryl New: 'cause I was thinking,'cause we need to close, but I was thinking, so what really would've been the big tweak in all of it?
- 20:28Cheryl New: Mm.
- 20:29Cheryl New: You, you know, there's so many places that I could have changed, but to have grace in place.
- 20:36Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 20:37Cheryl New: All directions.
- 20:38Cheryl New: To myself.
- 20:39Cheryl New: Myself, to myself.
- 20:40Cheryl New: Yes.
- 20:40Cheryl New: Not just to my children.
- 20:41Cheryl New: It's a huge one because I just beat myself up all the time.
- 20:44Cheryl New: Oh, I blew that.
- 20:45Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 20:45Cheryl New: I blew that.
- 20:45Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 20:46Cheryl New: I didn't say that right.
- 20:47Cheryl New: Oh, I blew it.
- 20:48Cheryl New: I blew it.
- 20:48Cheryl New: Instead of realizing, oh, what I'm really role modeling for your children is go through life, giving yourself and other people grace to make mistakes to get up.
- 20:59Cheryl New: You know, I loved it the other day somebody.
- 21:02Cheryl New: Didn't put a lid on a expensive kitchen product, and someone picked it up and turned it, and the whole thing spilled all out.
- 21:12Cheryl New: I loved it because I saw my daughter say, well, you know
- 21:15Speaker: What's more important people or stuff, and all the grandkids said people
- 21:22Cheryl New (2): so they're learning, That's grace.
- 21:23Cheryl New (2): Yeah.
- 21:24Cheryl New (2): And then my 3-year-old grandson just looked up and said, besides mom, only God's perfect.
- 21:30Cheryl New (2): Aw.
- 21:31Cheryl New (2): Yes.
- 21:32Cheryl New (2): But that might be the title of our parenting book, Uhhuh.
- 21:35Cheryl New (2): Oh, by the way, only God's Perfect.
- 21:36Cheryl New (2): That's so good.
- 21:38Cheryl New: So for me, when I think about operating in Grace, it's just forgiving myself.
- 21:43Cheryl New: It's giving myself room to be imperfect, to realize there's gonna be messes, but that's normal.
- 21:50Cheryl New: That doesn't mean it's wrong.
- 21:51Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 21:52Cheryl New: And seeing exactly like that incident I just explained.
- 21:57Cheryl New: There was more grace being poured out than there was that expensive thing.
- 22:01=: Yeah.
- 22:01=: That was
- 22:02Cheryl New: bought to last for a long time.
- 22:04Cheryl New: Right.
- 22:04Cheryl New: Okay.
- 22:05Cheryl New: Just as that.
- 22:05Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 22:06Cheryl New: Every person had the right to fail.
- 22:08Cheryl New: Right.
- 22:09Cheryl New: And it was safe and it
- 22:11Christie: was just stuff.
- 22:12Christie: And like you said a minute ago that quote we don't love people in slices.
- 22:16Christie: That's right.
- 22:17Christie: We are not loved in slices.
- 22:19Christie: No,, we can know that we are worthy of love.
- 22:22Christie: The whole package.
- 22:23Christie: The warts, the flaws, the strengths, the weaknesses.
- 22:28Christie: We don't have to just live off of the identity of our wins
- 22:32Cheryl New: you know?
- 22:32Cheryl New: And I actually have tears in my eyes right now'cause I didn't know that when I was young.
- 22:38=: Mm-hmm.
- 22:38=: Mm-hmm.
- 22:40Cheryl New: And I didn't do that.
- 22:42Cheryl New: I loved myself in slices.
- 22:44Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 22:45Cheryl New: If I was doing the right thing and it was working well and I responded to my children and I made the right choices, and I came back and apologized well, and da da da, da da, da da.
- 22:54Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 22:55Cheryl New: I would allow that slice.
- 22:56Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 22:57Cheryl New: But I was really cruel mm-hmm.
- 22:59Cheryl New: To myself when I didn't do it all right.
- 23:03Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 23:04Cheryl New: So I guess that's where I would end up.
- 23:08Cheryl New: Combat those lies with grace.
- 23:09Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 23:10Cheryl New: That's what we need.
- 23:11Cheryl New: Right, right, right.
- 23:12Cheryl New: Wow, that's great.
- 23:14Cheryl New: Thank you all.
