- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. OK, so let's talk today about
- 0:33putting too much on our plate. I am a self-proclaimed person
- 0:38who puts too much on her plate. I know I do that sometimes, like
- 0:43there's no question about it. However, over the years I have
- 0:47learned to manage it in a much different, much better way.
- 0:51So when I was younger, I would readily put too much on my
- 0:54plate. I would take on as many projects
- 0:56as I could. I would almost pig pile stuff on
- 1:00top of myself to make myself feel.
- 1:03At the time I didn't realize it, but really it was all about
- 1:08making myself feel like I was making progress.
- 1:10And I did that by putting too much on my plate just so I would
- 1:14be, you know, productive, or so I thought because I really
- 1:18wasn't productive. What I was doing was just
- 1:20putting myself in such a state of overwhelm all the time.
- 1:23It wasn't true productivity. What it was is chaos.
- 1:27And I kept entertaining the chaos over and over and over
- 1:30again. And people would talk to me
- 1:32about, oh, some people would give me accolades for being so,
- 1:36you know, into so many different things.
- 1:38Some people would say to me, I don't know how you manage it.
- 1:41Some people would make comments about how I had a, you know,
- 1:47this too varied of a palette, let's say, of things that I was
- 1:53interested in and I should cut it back.
- 1:55I should focus on one thing which was never going to happen.
- 1:58But all that doesn't matter. What matters is my strategy was
- 2:03to let myself feel busy. If I was busy, then I was good.
- 2:08Meaning I was making progress, but the progress was shattered a
- 2:13lot of the times because I could not, I could not under any
- 2:17circumstances keep up with everything that I had on my
- 2:20plate at a high level. Could I keep up with it overall?
- 2:24Sure. But was everything getting, you
- 2:27know, diluted, so to speak, where I was?
- 2:30I'm working on things, yes, but I'm I'm not doing anything.
- 2:34Well, so it's that whole, you know, if you, if you have your,
- 2:38if you're in the process of recognizing how much you are,
- 2:42you get distracted and we talk about, you know, give yourself
- 2:45focus, put your intention on something.
- 2:47Don't multitask. You understand, you've heard
- 2:50somebody, no doubt, maybe me say when you multitask, you're only
- 2:54giving each element of what you're multitasking on a
- 2:58fraction of your attention. Therefore, nothing is going to
- 3:01be great. Yet we all continue to do it
- 3:03because we think we have to get so much done and we live in this
- 3:06hyper OverDrive society that puts this belief system on us
- 3:11that we have to do all these different things.
- 3:14Now, it could be that reason. It could also be a reason like
- 3:18what I suffered from. Part of it was not that I had
- 3:20the pressure from the society, but I had so many different
- 3:23things I wanted to do and I didn't want to give anyone of
- 3:26them up. Like I genuinely wanted to be
- 3:30like a very creative person doing all kinds of projects,
- 3:34whatever they may be. Gardening projects, art
- 3:37projects, writing projects, photography projects, it didn't
- 3:40matter. I wanted to be creative and I
- 3:43was going to go to the NTH degree to be creative at the
- 3:46same time. I was building a business at the
- 3:48same time, I was working a job at the same time.
- 3:51I had a family at the same time. My child was, you know, young at
- 3:55the time and I was just, Oh my gosh, this is, this is insane.
- 4:00And even before I had my daughter at the time, it was
- 4:03just my daughter at even before I had her, I would do this to
- 4:07myself where I would take all these things on.
- 4:10And I was, I was so excited to take them on.
- 4:15So they, it felt like it was the right thing to do.
- 4:18But when I got older and I started to really pay attention
- 4:22to this, I recognized that what I was doing was not only
- 4:27destroying how I how I was productive, because it really
- 4:31was destroying productivity. Because what I thought was being
- 4:35productive was not being productive.
- 4:36It was actually breaking down productivity because I wasn't
- 4:39giving anything the right amount of attention.
- 4:41But what it was doing, it was fractionalizing everything in my
- 4:45head so that I felt like I had to give small amounts of time to
- 4:50each thing instead of saying, you know what, what, what do I
- 4:53really want? What do I really want to put my
- 4:57attention and focus on by simply asking those questions by by
- 5:01stopping and pausing and saying, OK, let me do a brain dump.
- 5:05Let me get all of this out of my head.
- 5:07Let me see where all these spots are that are pulling me.
- 5:11Like really put it on paper, map it out, say these are all the
- 5:14things that are pulling me and which ones do I want to give
- 5:18attention to? Which ones do?
- 5:20And, and, and sometimes you look at it and you go, I want to give
- 5:23attention to all of them. And that's probably true, but
- 5:26you have to actually give a rating to each one of them in a,
- 5:30in a hierarchy. You have to sit down and say, is
- 5:33this more important than that? One of the most important tools
- 5:36I ever learned in my life was, is this more important than
- 5:40that? And so when you're feeling the
- 5:42overwhelm and you start to look at everything like it's all
- 5:47coming at you at once and you know you have control because no
- 5:51one can make you do things you don't want to do.
- 5:54You're taking on too much. You understand?
- 5:57You can say no, You can say, oh, I can't do that.
- 5:59But if someone might say, oh, Kim, no, I have to.
- 6:02I can't give up any opportunities.
- 6:04OK, that may feel like it's the case, but you can.
- 6:08You can say I can do it, but not right now.
- 6:11That's one of the things that I learned to do.
- 6:13I just said that to somebody yesterday.
- 6:15I can do it for you, but I can't do it right now.
- 6:18And in the process of doing that, you start to empower
- 6:22yourself again. You start to feel like you gain
- 6:24something back. So just remember, we do have
- 6:27choices, but you may have to go to that, that strategy of
- 6:32actually sitting down and rating each thing and deciding what
- 6:36level it should be given in your life.
- 6:39Because otherwise you continue to do this and you split
- 6:42everything and fractionalize it and nothing, nothing ends up
- 6:46working out well when you do that.
- 6:48All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:51will see you tomorrow. Bye.
