- 2:11Speaker 2: The life of a true servant. In our last story,
- 2:16Speaker 2: we learned how Balaam was unable to curse Israel, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: instead blessed them three times. He prophesied from God and
- 2:25Speaker 2: spoke blessings and truth over them. Finally, he spoke of
- 2:29Speaker 2: an all-powerful one that would come from Israel, a shining
- 2:33Speaker 2: star from Jacob. In this story, we learn about the
- 2:37Speaker 2: passing of Moses, his final words before God, and how
- 2:41Speaker 2: Joshua became the new leader to lead the Israelites into
- 2:45Speaker 2: the promised land, as inspired by the book of Numbers
- 2:49Speaker 2: and Deuteronomy.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in

- 3:42Speaker 4: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In yesterday's episode, we heard the story
- 3:51Speaker 4: of Balaam, who after his encounter with God had a
- 3:53Speaker 4: changed heart and no longer sought to curse Israel for
- 3:56Speaker 4: his own personal gain, but rather blessed the nation God
- 3:59Speaker 4: had chosen. Our passage ended with a prophecy from Balaam
- 4:04Speaker 4: of one who would come from Israel and shine bright
- 4:07Speaker 4: as a star and bless the whole world. Today we
- 4:10Speaker 4: move ahead many years to the final days of Moses,
- 4:14Speaker 4: the great leader God has used for so many years
- 4:17Speaker 4: to guide his people out of Egypt and through the desert.
- 4:21Speaker 4: We'll also learn of the leader who was to come
- 4:23Speaker 4: after him, a young man we've met before who desired
- 4:26Speaker 4: to follow God and to live in his presence. Let's
- 4:29Speaker 4: listen now to today's reading.
- 4:32Speaker 2: It was still evening when the Lord spoke to Moses.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The stars spread across the skies like a tapestry. Moses,
- 4:40Speaker 2: now 120 years old, slept in his tent soundly. Dawn
- 4:45Speaker 2: was approaching, and God spoke to Moses in the quiet, saying,
- 4:50Speaker 2: Go up to the mountain, and I will let you
- 4:52Speaker 2: gaze upon the land I have promised Israel. Even though
- 4:56Speaker 2: you may not enter it, I shall let you see
- 4:58Speaker 2: the fruit of your labor before you die. Moses had
- 5:03Speaker 2: already accepted his fate and was going to welcome death gracefully. However,
- 5:09Speaker 2: he was still concerned about the people of Israel. Moses,
- 5:13Speaker 2: still lying in his bed, spoke to the Lord, saying,
- 5:16Speaker 2: God of body and soul, appoint a man from among
- 5:20Speaker 2: the people who shall lead, for they will be like
- 5:23Speaker 2: sheep without a shepherd. Moses was a shepherd after all,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and he had come to realize the people of Israel
- 5:31Speaker 2: were no different than sheep in need of guidance and love.
- 5:35Speaker 2: God spoke to Moses, Take Joshua, who has my spirit,
- 5:41Speaker 2: and lay your hand on him to bless him. Make
- 5:43Speaker 2: him stand before Eleazar the priest and commission him. As
- 5:48Speaker 2: dawn broke, Moses gathered Joshua, Eleazar, and the congregation of Israel.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Moses looked at the people of Israel, God's sheep, their
- 5:58Speaker 2: hopeful faces shown from the rising sun. Moses' heart welled
- 6:03Speaker 2: with love, hope, and sadness. He rose His hand and
- 6:08Speaker 2: spoke His final blessings over them. Hear me, sweet children
- 6:12Speaker 2: of Israel. Blessings and curses stand before you. Every day
- 6:18Speaker 2: there will be a choice to choose between life and death,
- 6:21Speaker 2: hope and hopelessness, good and evil. If you listen closely
- 6:26Speaker 2: to the voice of God and obey His commands, He
- 6:29Speaker 2: will restore your souls. He will circumcise your heart as
- 6:34Speaker 2: He did your bodies. Love the Lord your God with
- 6:37Speaker 2: all your soul, and you will prosper. Your enemies will
- 6:41Speaker 2: be cursed, and all you do will succeed. For God
- 6:46Speaker 2: will take delight in you, as he did your forefathers.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Keep his commands close to your hearts. The afternoon had come,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and Moses continued to speak to Israel with a contented
- 6:58Speaker 2: smile on his face. I am 120 years old today.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I am no longer able to keep myself upright. The
- 7:07Speaker 2: Lord will go before you and lead. He will vanquish
- 7:11Speaker 2: every nation that opposes you. Moses then held the shoulder
- 7:15Speaker 2: of Joshua and brought him before the people. Joshua will
- 7:19Speaker 2: lead you as the head. Be strong and courageous. Fear
- 7:23Speaker 2: no one, for God will not leave you or forsake you.
- 7:29Speaker 2: The people cheered. as the final words of Moses struck
- 7:32Speaker 2: the collective chord of Israel. Hope filled the crowd like
- 7:36Speaker 2: an overflowing well. Moses turned to Joshua, holding his head
- 7:42Speaker 2: close to his own. Be strong and have courage, he
- 7:45Speaker 2: said to Joshua. It is God who goes before you.
- 7:49Speaker 2: He will be with you. He will not leave you.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Do not fear anything. Moses' voice cracked as he held
- 7:59Speaker 2: back tears. Joshua looked deeply into the eyes of Moses,
- 8:04Speaker 2: the eyes of a man blessed by God. After this,
- 8:08Speaker 2: Moses said his final blessings over Israel. He spoke to
- 8:12Speaker 2: them as a tender and loving father. Tears streamed down
- 8:16Speaker 2: their faces as they listened in silence. After Moses said
- 8:20Speaker 2: his prayers and blessings over Israel, he sang over them.
- 8:24Speaker 2: His voice was old and raspy, but the people were
- 8:27Speaker 2: enraptured by every word. They swayed to the song, smiling.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Moses sang to God, and in that moment, his heart
- 8:36Speaker 2: for the Lord was pouring out onto all the people listening.
- 8:41Speaker 2: The deep well of connection was now overflowing, and the
- 8:44Speaker 2: people rejoiced. The sun began its descent. Moses then climbed
- 8:49Speaker 2: up the plains of Moab towards Mount Nebo. There, at
- 8:53Speaker 2: the peak, the Lord showed Moses the entire land. God
- 8:58Speaker 2: mapped out the countryside before him, making mention of where
- 9:01Speaker 2: all the twelve tribes would dwell. This is the land
- 9:05Speaker 2: I swore to Abraham, God said gently. Even though you
- 9:09Speaker 2: will not step foot in it, I have allowed you
- 9:12Speaker 2: to see it. The setting sun painted the sky a
- 9:16Speaker 2: deep orange. The land was golden. A strong breeze galloped
- 9:20Speaker 2: across the plains up towards the mountain and blew Moses'
- 9:23Speaker 2: hair back. He could not take his eyes off Canaan,
- 9:28Speaker 2: Since that infamous day he met God as a burning bush,
- 9:31Speaker 2: Moses had dreamed of the day he would finally see it.
- 9:35Speaker 2: The land flowing with milk and honey. Tears fell from Moses' cheeks.
- 9:41Speaker 2: He smiled and continued to look towards the countryside. As
- 9:44Speaker 2: the golden rays dimmed below the horizon, Moses breathed his
- 9:49Speaker 2: last breath and was joined with God for all eternity.
- 9:54Speaker 2: The people mourned and looked to Joshua for guidance. And
- 9:57Speaker 2: God blessed Joshua and filled him with joy. him with
- 10:00Speaker 2: a courageous spirit. Thus the days of Moses came to
- 10:05Speaker 2: a close. The man God had chosen to lead his
- 10:08Speaker 2: people out of captivity had died. One day, a leader
- 10:13Speaker 2: greater than Moses would lead God's children out of captivity
- 10:17Speaker 2: from their sin. The sting of death would split in half,
- 10:21Speaker 2: just as the Red Sea. He would be the greater Moses.
- 10:25Speaker 2: So Israel waited hundreds of years until his arrival.
- 10:34Speaker 4: We open today's story with Moses, who is now 120
- 10:37Speaker 4: years old. He has lived under the discipline of God
- 10:42Speaker 4: because he spoke to the rock angrily and took credit
- 10:45Speaker 4: for the water that flowed. God said, you will never
- 10:48Speaker 4: enter the promised land. And yet God extended grace and
- 10:53Speaker 4: peace to Moses in the final days of his life.
- 10:57Speaker 4: And though he would never enter the land of promise,
- 10:59Speaker 4: God would show Moses the land that he would give
- 11:02Speaker 4: to Israel. Moses served God faithfully for decades, leading a
- 11:08Speaker 4: stiff-necked people with both strength and humility. God tells him
- 11:12Speaker 4: he'll soon join his brother Aaron and all of his
- 11:15Speaker 4: people who had gone before him. Death, after all, is
- 11:18Speaker 4: an open door to heaven to all who trust in
- 11:21Speaker 4: the Lord God through Jesus Christ. Even in these final days, Moses'
- 11:25Speaker 4: chief concern is for the people and who will shepherd them.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Moses wanted to be sure they were taken care of
- 11:31Speaker 4: when he was gone and not left to go astray,
- 11:34Speaker 4: as he knew they would. God reveals to Moses who
- 11:38Speaker 4: his leader will be. It is the same one, the
- 11:41Speaker 4: same man who sat outside the tent of meeting even
- 11:43Speaker 4: as others went back to camp. It is the same
- 11:46Speaker 4: man who believed God to take the promised land along
- 11:49Speaker 4: with Caleb when the spies entered into the land. It
- 11:52Speaker 4: was the same man who led their first battle against
- 11:55Speaker 4: the Amalekites. Yes, this man is none other than Joshua.
- 12:01Speaker 4: God tells Moses to call Joshua and bless him and
- 12:05Speaker 4: commission him before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation
- 12:10Speaker 4: of Israel. Moses, who is barely able to keep himself upright,
- 12:15Speaker 4: then addresses his flock one last time. He has so
- 12:19Speaker 4: much to remind them of. All of God's commandments, the
- 12:23Speaker 4: laws for living as God's holy people. He recounts the
- 12:26Speaker 4: stories of God's faithfulness over many years and countless challenges
- 12:31Speaker 4: and campaigns. The final chapters of Numbers and Deuteronomy most
- 12:35Speaker 4: of Deuteronomy, record his words. Then in Deuteronomy 30, verses
- 12:40Speaker 4: 15 and 16, Moses says this, See, I have set
- 12:45Speaker 4: before you today life and prosperity and death and adversity,
- 12:49Speaker 4: in that I command you today to love the Lord
- 12:51Speaker 4: your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep
- 12:54Speaker 4: his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that you
- 12:57Speaker 4: may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God
- 13:00Speaker 4: may bless you in the land where you are entering
- 13:03Speaker 4: to possess it. These are the greatest rewards for obeying God.
- 13:08Speaker 4: If they choose obedience, they will experience fullness of life, blessing,
- 13:13Speaker 4: and God's hand of provision and protection. Think about it,
- 13:19Speaker 4: because the same is true for us. Of course, it
- 13:22Speaker 4: doesn't mean that we will live our lives without adversity
- 13:25Speaker 4: or hardship, but what we know because of the promises
- 13:28Speaker 4: of God is is that God's ways are higher and
- 13:32Speaker 4: better than our ways, and His way always leads to
- 13:36Speaker 4: abundant life and blessing. But there is the other side.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Moses warns the people that if they turn from God
- 13:44Speaker 4: and follow other gods, false gods, they will perish. They
- 13:48Speaker 4: are to keep God's commands close to their hearts. This
- 13:51Speaker 4: is a powerful, powerful encouragement to you and me to
- 13:55Speaker 4: stay in God's Word daily and obey Him. Moses then
- 14:00Speaker 4: spoke to Joshua the words he would keep close to
- 14:02Speaker 4: his heart for years to come. Be strong and courageous.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Joshua was taking on a task that would require strength
- 14:11Speaker 4: and courage in the face of great fear. But as
- 14:14Speaker 4: Moses also reminded Joshua, God would be with him and
- 14:18Speaker 4: go before him. God's faithful servant knew it was time
- 14:22Speaker 4: to go. God took him to the top of Mount
- 14:25Speaker 4: Nebo and showed Moses the land that he would give
- 14:28Speaker 4: to Israel. God's grace and kindness shone through Moses one
- 14:32Speaker 4: more time before he took his final rest and joined
- 14:35Speaker 4: his heavenly Father. Dear God, how we thank you for
- 14:40Speaker 4: the story of Moses. What a life, a life of
- 14:43Speaker 4: example and leadership and service. One of the greatest men
- 14:47Speaker 4: who ever lived because he was your man. May we
- 14:51Speaker 4: follow his example of humility and strength in our lives
- 14:55Speaker 4: and look to you in obedience. And help us to
- 14:58Speaker 4: be strong and courageous always as we follow you, no
- 15:01Speaker 4: matter what. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening
- 15:07Speaker 4: to today's Bible in a Year podcast. I'm Jack Graham
