- 0:07Chicago Cubs faced the Seattle Mariners for a spring training game on March 19, 1977.
- 0:13Chicago was managed by Herman Franks, who had previously led the Giants to several successful 90-win seasons in the late 1960s.
- 0:21Franks was replacing the Cubs' previous manager, Jim Marshall, who had very little success in his three years as skipper.
- 0:27The Mariners were in their first ever season as a franchise and were led by manager Darryl Johnson.
- 0:32This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcers Lou Boudreaux and Vince Lloyd.
- 0:37How are you doing everybody? Lou Boudreaux with the Lead Off Band brought to you by Beacons. Look up your local Beacons agent and your Yellow Pages. I will be talking to our guest, the manager of the Seattle Mariners, Darryl Johnson in just one minute.
- 1:00After managing a team that so-called veterans were sprinkled with a few rookies such as the Red Sox were in 75 when that great World Series was between the Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:16And now coming along here to an expansion ball club, have you changed any philosophy of managing?
- 1:23Well Lou, I think you did what I'm doing right now enough to know that certainly when you're dealing with many young people and inexperienced people as we are dealing with here in this camp compared to the Red Sox, you have to change a few things.
- 1:36I think that you have to double up and almost triple up your fundamentals. We have a lot more decisions to make on a ball club like this.
- 1:44And again dealing with young people, I think patience comes into it a little bit more than what would be considered normal because you certainly have to give these young people time to get over the jitters on top of getting them in shape.
- 1:55And I really haven't started judging the people here as fast as I might in an ordinary camp just giving everybody a chance to play an equal amount of time on a baseball field.
- 2:04And from looking over the box scores I would say you're very happy with your hitting.
- 2:09Well Lou, as we come into this thing the news media asked me about this and this before we ever started and the power would be our biggest weakness.
- 2:16Hitting would be our second weakness and you know what they're all calling me something funny names Lou as you would well know because actually when you come down to it our hitting has been the strongest part of our ball club at this point.
- 2:26But yet that may happen in the spring but once that bell rings it could be different and you could be right.
- 2:31Lou when you cross that white stripe for real things do change as you well know and certainly I'm not getting over enthusiastic about these guys but it is nice to see these young kids swing the bat the way they have at this point.
- 2:41I know that in the drafting of the Seattle ball club you did not go to your infield quickly.
- 2:48You went to pitching and outfield. Was that because those were the young fellows available?
- 2:53Well basically so Lou and on top of this you know we drafted Grant Jackson from the Yankee ball club. We knew that he was going to be a wanted man by contending ball clubs and we drafted him with the full thought of getting two young infielders which we eventually did in the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 3:10Yes you did and that solidifies that infield with Reynolds who is a very fine glove man.
- 3:15They tell me in the reports on him are outstanding Lou. His prospects are being a darn good shortstop and he's certainly starting to show it to us right now.
- 3:24What about your pitching? What will be your rotation?
- 3:28Well Lou as far as names I can't give you names at this particular time but I will say this when I spoke about hitting and power being our weaknesses I think when we come out of this camp that our pitching will be the strongest part of our ball club.
- 3:40And that of course means a great deal that you can be in ball games practically all year if it holds up.
- 3:45Well we are playing in a big park Lou to where power is going to be nullified and the ball doesn't carry in the dome so I don't think the home run ball for either side is going to enter into it quite as much as the pitching will and again hopefully and the way it looks to me the pitching should keep us in the ball games a big percent of the time.
- 3:59Actually then you and your coaching staff and the organization they have perhaps divided this year into two seasons. This spring workout is actually a season for fellows trying to make your ball club.
- 4:12Lou you are exactly right. Our basic part of what we are doing right now is looking at the people to cut us down to 25 people and it's a competition at every job on this ball field and we couldn't say for sure right now that any one man has a position sewed up.
- 4:25And competition means so much as you know in your major league career as a catcher and also as a manager and coach.
- 4:32Well Lou you and I would both love to have a situation exist where you've got competition at every job because these people are hauling their cans and they are playing the game as hard as it can be played and I know as a manager that's always a joy to behold and they are really going hard at it.
- 4:45I understand that you have a great following and backing in Seattle when you open up there in the dome that you perhaps will have a sellout.
- 4:53Well again I don't know that much Lou about ticket sales although the people that I have talked to from the front office are very enthusiastic so I know things are going well for us in our opening game up there.
- 5:04And you mentioned to me earlier that you have 19 out of the first 21 or 22 games at home. Is this an advantage to you?
- 5:10Well Lou I think with our young people and a big percent of never playing on an artificial surface it will be a decided advantage. Not only do we have two workout days when we get through a spring training but we play again 19 out of 22 games at home and I like that because we can fundamental our guys in our own park.
- 5:27Mornings for night games and really we're going to be still doing fundamentals as we go into our year and it really is much better to be home to do those things than it is to be on the road.
- 5:36Do you have no goals? How can you set goals?
- 5:43I'll tell you what I have a goal but it doesn't have anything to do with numbers. Every month that we go out to play the game of baseball I expect us to play better in June than we did in May. I expect us to play better in August than we did in July and the wins and losses will follow accordingly in my opinion.
- 5:58And if I know one Darryl Johnson that's exactly how it's going to happen. You may be able to make the mistake once but don't do it again.
- 6:04Lou I'll tell you what if it don't go the way I'm talking about I'll find myself a nice golf course and go take a look at that.
- 6:10No you won't do that because starting out with this great expansion ball club and we keep saying that there should not be any more expansion because of the qualified ball players we haven't had enough at major league level.
- 6:24But if you've got hard working individuals working hard a youngster can just put out the best of his ability and put on a good show for you.
- 6:32Lou you know it's so amazing how if you relieve the pressure of a better player in front of you at a position at the big league level and you're a young man and let's say that you were playing as a young man center field for the Boston Red Sox at AAA and you were a good player but still you can't beat out a Freddie Lynn and I'm using those names because they come to my mind quickly.
- 6:49You remove that pressure and it's amazing the way some of these people can walk out there and show you how they can play the game without that pressure and there's going to be some of these boys that are going to be darn good baseball players.
- 6:59Well we want to wish you a lot of luck and I hope you remain in this uniform for as long as you desire.
- 7:04I feel the same way about it and I think I might do that Lou.
- 7:07Thank you.
- 7:08Sal Johnson, fine young manager with the Seattle Mariners with our guest.
- 7:12We'll be right back after this message.
- 7:29When we were moving on I had to say we have to be there on Wednesday.
- 7:33So I looked around at the ten biggest interstate movers and found that Beacon's Van Lines has the best record in the business for being on time.
- 7:42I know George, a Beacon's Van pulled up to our house right on time and we were packed and loaded before I knew it.
- 7:47We have to be there on Wednesday.
- 7:49So I double checked everything and sure enough on Wednesday there was Beacon's right on time.
- 7:54What's this the game was changed to Tuesday?
- 7:56Be sure to remember Beacon's Van Lines if your husband's on a schedule and buy him a couple of tickets and send him off to the game.
- 8:03Just remember Beacon's and forget your rules.
- 8:11Look up your local Beacon's agent in your yellow pages.
- 8:15This has been the leadoff man brought to you by Beacon's.
- 8:18Look up your local Beacon's agent in your yellow pages.
- 8:21Now stay tuned for Vince Floyd and today's ballgame between the Chicago Cubs and the Seattle Mariners.
- 8:27This is Lou Boudreaux. This has been a presentation of WGN Sports.
- 8:31This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 8:34How much your dollar buys today depends on where you spend it.
- 8:37Take automotive electronics.
- 8:39It's a beautiful day for a ballgame, for a ballgame today. The fans are off to get a ticket or two.
- 8:51Come on, on, on, Washington, get down on your two. It's a beautiful day for a home run, but even a triple home game.
- 9:02We're gonna cheer and boo and raise all of our youth at the ballgame today.
- 9:11The Chicago Cubs are on the air.
- 9:14Good evening everybody. Vince Floyd and Lou Boudreaux reporting to you today.
- 9:18The Cubs taking on one of the new expansion teams of the American League, the Mariners from Seattle.
- 9:24And the ballgame being played over in the spring exhibition camp of Seattle at Tempe, Arizona.
- 9:31A little bit south and west of the home base of the Chicago Cubs.
- 9:34And the Cubs have been having a rather rough go of it.
- 9:37Remember the very first game that we saw in broadcast back to you in their opening day that they beat at Milwaukee.
- 9:42It's a very fine pitching and a close ballgame, but since then it's not been too good insofar as the Cubs are concerned.
- 9:48After that 2-1 victory over Milwaukee, they then dropped a 6-3 decision to them.
- 9:53And our next broadcast, the Cubs losing to the Giants 10-8, then to the Giants 6-2.
- 9:59They beat the, or lost to the Mariners over here at Tempe earlier in spring training by a score of 10-5.
- 10:06They've given up 14 runs to the Indians, got beat by the Padres a couple of days to go.
- 10:12Elgo 5-4 at the Cubs camp in Scottsdale.
- 10:16And yesterday they were pummeled by the Oakland A's giving up 17 runs.
- 10:20So the pitching has been a problem.
- 10:22And Ray Burr since his first two outings has been hit pretty hard.
- 10:26He has not been getting that ball down.
- 10:28Today, a young man who is hopeful of making the Cubs a starting rotation this year, Mike Kruko, is getting the starting assignment against Seattle.
- 10:38And we are going to have the use of the designated hitter today because we are at the home of this American League ball club.
- 10:43And both teams will be using the D.H.
- 10:46Frank McCormick, who last year pitched in the Miners at Evansville, a big right-hander, is going to be the starting pitcher for the Mariners.
- 10:54The broadcast today is brought to us by the G. Heilman Brewing Company from across Wisconsin, the makers of Old Style, the Pure Brewed Beer from God's Country,
- 11:02True Value Hardware. If you use it in, out, or around your home, you'll find it in Payless for it at True Value.

- 11:37without the express written consent of the Chicago National League Ball Club is prohibited.
- 11:41By the way, while this game is delayed, and you're hearing it a little bit later than it was played out in Arizona today,
- 11:47tomorrow afternoon we will be back at Scottsdale in a live broadcast as the Cubs take on this same ball club,
- 11:53so they have back-to-back engagements against one another.
- 11:57The national anthem has already been sung and played here for this game.
- 12:03And they had some special ceremonies prior to the start of the game.
- 12:07They have announced the starting lineups, and we're going to give you those lineups as time permits.
- 12:11The umpiring crew is out in the field right now.
- 12:13Larry Barnett from the American League will be working behind the plate.
- 12:17Ed Montague from the National League on the bases.
- 12:19Ron Luciano, the big, colorful American League umpire, also on the bases.
- 12:23And the veteran Johnny Kibler from the National League, working the bases.
- 12:26And we'll be back with the starting lineups for the ball game right after this message.
- 12:31On behalf of the American Red Cross, the President of the United States.
- 12:36March is Red Cross Month.
- 12:39And one of us knows the important work the Red Cross does, disaster relief,
- 12:44the distribution of blood, service to the armed forces,
- 12:48first aid and water safety instruction, and a wide variety of community health programs.
- 12:53Every day some vital Red Cross service touches people's lives,
- 12:57but the Red Cross can't do them alone. It needs help.
- 13:01This month, I hope that you will become a Red Cross volunteer,
- 13:05support your local chapter's membership enrollment drive,
- 13:08and take a few minutes to donate blood. It's easy.
- 13:12I know because I'm a six gallon donor myself.
- 13:15And I'm giving another pint this month.
- 13:18As honorary chairman of the Red Cross, I urge you to help.
- 13:21For nearly 100 years, America has been counting on the Red Cross.
- 13:25This month, the Red Cross is counting on you.
- 13:30Here's the way the Cubs are to come to the plate in this ball game.
- 13:36John DeJesus will be leading off at shortstop,
- 13:39and that seems to be the spot where you'll see him at Wrigley Field
- 13:41on opening day at leadoff position.
- 13:44Steve Onabaris at third base, Onabaris batting second.
- 13:47Greg Gross in right field, Gross hitting third.
- 13:50Bobby Mercer in the cleanup position, and Mercer is the designated hitter today.
- 13:54He still has a little bit of a leg muscle pull.
- 13:59Larry Bittner will be at first base in Bittner batting fifth
- 14:02with Tarzan Joe Wallace in center field, Wallace hitting sixth.
- 14:06Gene Clines in left field, Cardinal by the way is still out with a bad knee.
- 14:13That's the knee that you may recall, Cardinal injured last September
- 14:17in a game against Philadelphia.
- 14:19Knocked him out of the last three weeks or so of the 76 campaign.
- 14:23So he is still recovering from that sore knee.
- 14:25And Clines in left field today with George Middlewald again doing the catching, batting eighth.
- 14:30And Davey Rosello at second base, Rosello batting ninth.
- 14:34Manny Treo had a tooth pulled a couple of days ago,
- 14:36says he figures he will be able to start perhaps on Monday,
- 14:40but he has not yet started an exhibition game.
- 14:43For the Seattle Mariners, Manny by Darryl Johnson,
- 14:47Louis Delgado will be leading off, Delgado in center field.
- 14:50Tommy Smith in left field, Smith batting second.
- 14:53Juan Bernhardt at third base, Bernhardt hitting third.
- 14:57Lee Stanton in right field and Stanton batting clean up
- 15:01with Danny Meyer at first base, Meyer batting fifth.
- 15:04Joe Liss, the designated hitter, LIS, and Liss is batting sixth.
- 15:09Kurt Bavacqua at short stop, Bavacqua batting seventh.
- 15:13Jimmy Sexton at second base hitting eighth.
- 15:16And the catcher, Skip Jutzi, Jutzi batting ninth.
- 15:21And their starting pitcher as we said, Frank McCormick,
- 15:23last year toiled with Evansville in the minors.
- 15:28Phoenix Lowry coaching at third base, and Alvin Dark in the
- 15:31coach's box at first for the Cubs, stepping into the
- 15:33batter's box, Ivan DeJesus, the right-handed hitting short stop.
- 15:37So far this spring, he's hitting 286 with eight hits
- 15:40and a couple of runs batted in, and he is perfect record
- 15:43when he gets on base and steals, wind up in the first pitch
- 15:47by the right-hander McCormick, and it's a little bit high,
- 15:49ball one, and this game is underway.
- 15:54Straightaway center fielder, Louis Delgado.
- 15:57Good complex here.
- 15:59It looks like it could use a little rain, but other than that,
- 16:02it's a pretty good ballpark.
- 16:05And to wind up in the pitch a little low, ball two, no strike.
- 16:08Down the line it's 360 feet to the dark green fence.
- 16:11Now rally in left center about 390, maybe 395.
- 16:15Here's the pitch, a fastball low and outside, and McCormick
- 16:17has gotten himself in the hole.
- 16:19Ball three, no strikes, and Ivan DeJesus.
- 16:23McCormick has worked six innings so far this spring,
- 16:26picked up a victory.
- 16:28Big right-hander, he's only about one hit.
- 16:30Walk three, struck out two.
- 16:32Fires a fastball, in for a strike called, Larry Barnett,
- 16:35and the count on Ivan goes to three and oh.
- 16:38At first base is Danny Meyer.
- 16:40Jimmy Sexton at second, Babak with short, and Bernhardt.
- 16:44At third, the wide-up three-one delivery, Jesus almost is hit
- 16:47by the pitch.
- 16:48It gets off the catcher's mitt, rolls back to the screen.
- 16:50Ivan, who had gone to the deck down there, gets up and crotch
- 16:53down to first base.
- 16:54He is issued a base on balls to lead off the ballgame.
- 17:01Straightaway center field, it's about 430, 35 feet.
- 17:04And I say about because they don't give the distance here
- 17:07in straightaway center, but out near the straightaway center,
- 17:11it's 425 feet.
- 17:13And they have a dark, high green wall that serves as a fine
- 17:16background for the hitters.
- 17:18DeJesus, as I mentioned, has done exceptionally well on the
- 17:21bases so far this year with five stolen bases in five attempts.
- 17:26Stepping in is Steve Otterbaris batting left-handed, and he has
- 17:29looked better hitting lefty than he has righty.
- 17:31At a home run the other day, the runner goes, a swing and a foul,
- 17:34and he hit it sharply, and it rolls over in the line of the plate
- 17:37and third, so the hit and run was on.
- 17:39And DeJesus had a good jump.
- 17:42Otterbaris hitting for this spring training, just 182.
- 17:50As a left-hander, he's hitting 267.
- 17:53All four of his hits this spring have come from the left side of
- 17:55the plate, and one of the four homers.
- 17:57Also one of them a double and one a triple.
- 18:00He's shown good power from the left side.
- 18:02Throw to first, and a hit long foul back under the bag in plenty
- 18:05of time by Ivan DeJesus, Danny Meyer, first baseman over there.
- 18:10No score, top of the first inning.
- 18:12Nobody outrunnered first the stretch by McCormick.
- 18:14DeJesus, a good lead, does not go.
- 18:16A swing and a breaking ball, and he fouls it back up against the
- 18:19high backstop behind the plate.
- 18:21And so Otterbaris steps out of the batter's box, grabs a little
- 18:24dirt on his hands, and he finds himself in the hole with a
- 18:27nothing-in-two count.
- 18:32You know, that old saying in the spring, a young man's fancy
- 18:34turns to love and baseball.
- 18:36More about that in a moment.
- 18:37Here's the stretch and the pitch way outside of the fastball.
- 18:43Well, how about taking your girl to a ballgame, huh?
- 18:46Make it Sunday, April the 10th, because that day is ladies
- 18:49bonded day at Wrigley Field.
- 18:51The first 15,000 gals accompanied by a fully-painted
- 18:54adult receive a blue wide-brim foldable hat as the Cubs see
- 18:57on front of McCormick's fastball outside.
- 19:02It's like he doesn't want Otterbaris to pull this ball
- 19:04very much, Lou.
- 19:05Not with a man on first base.
- 19:07He's keeping the ball away from him.
- 19:12Aces the lead and a throw, and he barely is back in there
- 19:15safely in front of the tag.
- 19:18You ought to be sure to take in that ladies-botted day at
- 19:20Wrigley Field in the tent with the New York Mets in town.
- 19:24Get on that phone and make a date, huh?
- 19:26Sunday, April 10th, ladies-botted day at Wrigley Field.
- 19:30That will wind up the very, very brief Cubs' first
- 19:34home stand of the year.
- 19:35They open the season, you know, on Thursday the 7th
- 19:37against the Mets.
- 19:38Here's a stretch by McCormick.
- 19:39DeJesus goes, a pitch outside.
- 19:41Judgey Wurl throws into the dirt.
- 19:42He's in there safely.
- 19:44Had to beat very, very easily, and Yvonne DeJesus is
- 19:486-for-6 in Stilton bases, and he got an excellent jump
- 19:51that time.
- 19:53And Judgey just had to whirl right around after getting
- 19:55the ball, which was into the dirt, to the outside of the
- 19:57plate.
- 19:58Otterbaris has stepped out now.
- 19:59He's rubbing hands with that towel and, meanwhile,
- 20:04having a quick word of conversation with Greg Gross,
- 20:07who's in the on-deck circle.
- 20:12Out of 3-2.
- 20:13After being out in front of this hitter, nothing in 2.
- 20:16McCormick now into the stretch.
- 20:18Long look at second base.
- 20:19Here's the pitch.
- 20:20Otterbaris swings, and it drives down the left field
- 20:22line.
- 20:23It's going to be in there for extra bases.
- 20:24Here comes the first run of the day.
- 20:25DeJesus speeding around third, and the runner going
- 20:27into second base, the Cubs lead 1-0.
- 20:29Otterbaris has just driven in his sixth run of the year,
- 20:32and that's his second double.
- 20:35This one to the opposite side, down the line.
- 20:39Go walk in the Stoneman base, and now a double.
- 20:42And the Cubs grab the lead from the Seattle Mariners.
- 20:46The runner in scoring position.
- 20:48Let's see if Greg Gross can pick him up.
- 20:50Gross, the left-hander, playing in right field.
- 20:56Gross hitting.364 this spring, has pounded out eight hits,
- 21:00one of them a home run right here at this ballpark
- 21:03over the right field wall.
- 21:06He's 390 feet away.
- 21:08He's driven in three runs.
- 21:10McCormick again, working from the stretch in the
- 21:12right-hander's first pitch.
- 21:13Strike calls right down the middle.
- 21:17McCormick a native of the state of New Jersey.
- 21:23Evansville, last year was 4-4, then up to Detroit,
- 21:27where his own 5-a-curve ball swung on.
- 21:29He gets under it.
- 21:30It's a high foul, playable.
- 21:31Ketcher, shedding his eyes.
- 21:32It's Skip Judsey grabbing the ball in front of Bobby Mercer.
- 21:35The on-deck circle over the first base side.
- 21:37There's the first out of the ball game.
- 21:39High pop-up to the Ketcher.
- 21:43Bobby Mercer, the designated hitter.
- 21:46Hill nursing a bit of a muscle pull.
- 21:50The dive is left-play.
- 21:53In a battle, they 12 times this spring, has four base hits.
- 21:57No runs, batted in.
- 22:01Left-hander has walked once, has not yet struck out.
- 22:08Cubs with a 1-0 lead, and a runner at second with one
- 22:11gone in the top of the first inning.
- 22:12Here's the pitch of fastball low and inside.
- 22:16The primary really.
- 22:20In the on-deck circle now is left-handed hitting first baseman
- 22:23Larry Bittner.
- 22:25And these will be followed by Joe Wallace.
- 22:27Let's see how many more can come to bat in the first inning.
- 22:30Stretched by McCormick in the pitch, swung on, and he fouled it sharply
- 22:33off the foot of the plate umpire Larry Barnett.
- 22:36Ball game open with Ivan DeJesus drawing a base on balls, then stole
- 22:51second base and came in on Steve Otavaris's opposite field double.
- 22:55Otavaris now at second base with one away, gross foul after the catcher.
- 22:59And McCormick working now on Mercer.
- 23:02Here's the delivery, and he takes the ball outside.
- 23:09Ball two, strike one.
- 23:12Zaykart now not quite sure when his tender knee is going to permit him
- 23:16to get back into action.
- 23:17He thinks in a couple of days.
- 23:19Long-looking second, here's the pitch.
- 23:21Strike call to get fastball, and it moved.
- 23:24Ball two, strike two on the veteran Mercer.
- 23:27Billy Buckner does not appear.
- 23:29Will be able to play for perhaps a couple of weeks.
- 23:32He's still nursing that sore ankle.
- 23:38Out of two-two, here's the pitch.
- 23:40Swung on and missed it.
- 23:41Good fastball, and he just blazed it by him right in his eyes.
- 23:45So McCormick really bored out on that one, and he is retired.
- 23:49The veteran Mercer, two gone here in the first inning.
- 23:52Still at second base, he is Otavaris.
- 23:55And now let's see if Larry Bittner can pick him up.
- 23:58Bittner so far this spring has been about 27 hits, or 27 times,
- 24:04and he has only five hits.
- 24:06That's a 185 average, driven in three runs.
- 24:10Slightly closed stance for Bittner.
- 24:12Pitched by McCormick, fastball, and it misses outside.
- 24:17Louis DiIvgato is shading Bittner to pull just a little bit in right center field.
- 24:23Bright, sunshiny day.
- 24:25And a little bit of a breeze blowing. Here's the delivery.
- 24:28Streck on the inside corner, and he took it.
- 24:33Ball one, strike one.
- 24:38Greg McCormick hoping to be in that starting rotation for manager Daryl Johnson
- 24:44in the expansion Seattle Rainiers.
- 24:47Here's a swing, and he pulls a foul ball down the first baseline.
- 24:51Mariners it is, Vince.
- 24:53The trainer is the former cup trainer, Gary Nicholson.
- 24:59Gary rather delighted, of course, to get the call last summer
- 25:05to be the trainer for this ball club because Seattle is Gary's home.
- 25:12Bittner leveling the bat.
- 25:15Renner at second base, top of the first inning here to deliver.
- 25:18Way inside, just below the belt.
- 25:23Ball two, strike two.
- 25:25Two gone, and the baserunner is Steve Audubaris, who doubled down the left field line,
- 25:29bringing in Yvonne DeJesus and McCormick working quickly into the stretch.
- 25:32Right-hander's delivery.
- 25:34Takes the fastball, it misses outside of the letters.
- 25:37Now the count is three and two.
- 25:39In the on-deck circle is Tarzan Joe Wallace.
- 25:43McCormick, the list is six-four, two-ten.
- 25:47Twenty-two years of age.
- 25:49Could have a bright future.
- 25:52Pitching coast west-stock, pretty high on him.
- 25:55Three-two delivery. Bittner swings and a runner into the glove of the second baseman, Jimmy Sexton,
- 25:59and that retires the Cubs in the first inning.
- 26:02Well, they get on the board with a walk, and Steve Audubaris is single,
- 26:06the only hit of the inning, and one man left in the bases.
- 26:11Now out to the mound goes young Mike Kruko, and he'll be facing Delgado, Tommy Smith, and Juan Bernhardt.
- 26:16After half-inning, the Cubs lead Seattle 1-0.
- 26:19General Finance, Bob Adams speaking.
- 26:24Friendly Bob Adams.
- 26:25Right, who's this?
- 26:26Oh, Bob, Bob, Bob.
- 26:27Yeah?
- 26:28What's my secret?
- 26:29Well, I don't know.
- 26:30Bob, we've got ourselves a teeny-tiny.
- 26:32What?
- 26:33Little feet going pitter-patter.
- 26:34Oh, well, congratulations for your girl.
- 26:36Hey, girl, all girl, Bob.
- 26:37Great. Have you named her?
- 26:38Yeah, I think we're going to call her Spot.
- 26:40Spot?
- 26:41Oh, I know it's not an original name, but she's got this big black spot right between her eyes.
- 26:44Oh, why not?
- 26:45So you've got a little puppy dog right there.
- 26:46Right, right.
- 26:47Look, I want to refinish the whole basement for paneling, recess, leg room.
- 26:50Isn't that a little much for a puppy?
- 26:52Bob, for my mother-in-law, not the puppy.
- 26:54Oh, sorry.
- 26:55I thought you meant, doesn't your mother-in-law have a room upstairs?
- 26:58That's where the puppy is going, Bob.
- 27:00I see.
- 27:01She's allergic to dogs.
- 27:02Well, you can always get a little help from a friend at General Finance.
- 27:04Now I know, Bob, but what I need right now is a loan.
- 27:08There are over 60 General Finance offices in Chicagoland.
- 27:12Call friendly Bob Adams to borrow up to $10,000.
- 27:15Call and over 32020.
- 27:18This is WGN Radio, Chicago.
- 27:21Louis Delgado, a switch hitter, playing in center field, is going to be stepping into the batter's box here.
- 27:26Native of Puerto Rico, Delgado, just 23 years of age.
- 27:30He's off to a very, very fast start, and obviously has made a good impression.
- 27:35Manager Darrell Johnson and his coaching staff with 11 hits.
- 27:40With 11 hits, he's batting 458, one of his 11 homers.
- 27:43Trucco's first delivery of fastball for a strike call.
- 27:47Louis Delgado.
- 27:51Ada Fenson coaching down at first base.
- 27:55Trucco, big young kid, delivers, comes right over the top with a good curve, swung on a miss.
- 28:03He's batting right-handed.
- 28:06And they've listed him as a switch hitter.
- 28:10I'd have to say that it's stiff on that one.
- 28:14Here's the windup and the delivery.
- 28:17Fastball strike, three call.
- 28:19Trucco, nipping the outside corner, caught Delgado looking.
- 28:24That is strikeout number five, the spring for Mike, and he has now worked seven and two-thirds innings, given up only one earned run.
- 28:31He's been impressive.
- 28:33Tommy Smith, left-handed hitting outfielder.
- 28:36Thick kids, 6'3", 2'10", steps in out of the Cleveland organization.
- 28:41And he's having a good start of it.
- 28:4411 hits and 20 at bats and nine runs batted in.
- 28:47Fastball, it's off the middle of Middle Wall, high and outside to Tommy Smith, the left-hander.
- 28:59Mike Trucco, making a bid for a starting spot with the Cubs this year.
- 29:03Over the top, a one-opper right back to the pitcher.
- 29:05Mike's got it easily, tosses over to Bittner at first base.
- 29:08And they're two-gone, the bases are empty.
- 29:11Juan Bernhardt, slated to be the third pitcher now.
- 29:16DERN, H-A-R-D-T, Juan from the Dominican Republic.
- 29:22Syracuse last year in the minors, he hit 3-0-3 with eight homers, 57 runs batted in.
- 29:28Got a brief look with the Yankees, came to bat only 21 times and had four hits for the Yanks.
- 29:33Right-hander takes it, it's a strike call.
- 29:37Up out of the middle of Middle Wall.
- 29:41Cubs with a 1-0 lead, bottom of the first inning.
- 29:51Tricking still looks like a major problem for the Cubs for this year.
- 29:56Of course, during the week since we last talked to you, the Cubs made that deal with Oakland.
- 30:01Getting back, relieving pitcher Jimmy Todd.
- 30:04There's a swing and a curveball, then he fouls it back.
- 30:07And they just announced a few minutes ago that Jimmy Todd has come to terms with the Cubs.
- 30:12General Manager Bob Kennedy, Todd says he has a two-year contract.
- 30:16Here's the pitch, a little high with the fastball.
- 30:19Ball one, strike two, so all of the Cubs are in the fold.
- 30:24Gil Coleman went over to Oakland in that deal.
- 30:30One-two pitch, comes back with a curve right over the top of it that time.
- 30:34It's bounced sharply over to the dugout of Seattle over in the third base side.
- 30:40A lot of folks don't even have to pay admission to see this game.
- 30:43They can park their cars up on the hill beyond the left field fence.
- 30:47They get a good view.
- 30:48Group called drivers, here's a swing and a drive at the right field.
- 30:51Rick Gross is there, he reaches up and he hauls it in, and Seattle in the first inning goes down in order.
- 30:57Good start, the end of one. Cubs one and Seattle nothing.
- 31:02What makes Holloman's Old Style unique among beers and gives it that great light flavor?
- 31:13Well, our unique brewing process has a lot to do with it.
- 31:17We start with crystal clear water.
- 31:20This sparkling, pure spring water is good enough for Old Style.
- 31:24Water that flows cold and clear from deep beneath the ground, some folks say all the way from Canada.
- 31:41And the most expensive.
- 31:43And it's what gives Old Style its great light flavor.
- 31:47It's high Old Style, to a vote in God's country.
- 31:57G Holloman Brewing Company across Wisconsin.
- 32:05Well, with the questionable pitching the Cubs had last year, and certainly it's been questionable so far this spring.
- 32:11A fellow like Mike Kruco, bearing as he has when we have had a chance to see him,
- 32:15he looks like he's got a good shot at making it.
- 32:17Well, this is one of the two youngsters that I mentioned earlier has an opportunity to be a surprise
- 32:23and be a youngster that can pitch Major League Baseball. Kruco and Jeff Albert.
- 32:29Albert is a little farther away from Major League than Kruco, but I'm quite sure if Kruco does well today,
- 32:36he may be on that starting rotation.
- 32:41Tarsen Joe Wallace, batting left he steps in and the first pitch to him is a little high for ball one.
- 32:47Tars, five hits and 20 at bats this spring, one run batted in, makes him a 250 hitter.
- 32:55Larry Barnett from the American League calling the balls and strikes.
- 33:01Wind up by McCormick, tries to throw the curve, it didn't break, hung very high.
- 33:073.3, no strikes now in Tarsen.
- 33:12The strange thing about Mike Kruco, at Wichita in the minors last year, he was 7 and 9,
- 33:16had a pretty good earned run average though, 3.3.
- 33:20Here's a pitch, too high, ball four.
- 33:22Well, he started out the ball game by walking Ivan DeJesus, who promptly stole second base
- 33:27and tallied on the only hit of the ball game so far by anybody, an opposite field double by Steve Anabaris.
- 33:33And now, Tarsen leads off the second inning by drawing a walk.
- 33:39Gene Clines, it has been impressive out here in spring training this year, he's played in the outfield,
- 33:44he's been working out a lot at third base, he looks like he can handle that position okay.
- 33:49Clines, inning 421, right-handed hitter.
- 33:53And he's starting the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cubs got him from Texas,
- 33:56here's the pitch, way outside of the breaking ball, and I mean it was way outside.
- 34:01And Skip Jutzi, caught last year for the Houston Astros, it's call time, he wants to try to settle down.
- 34:08Frank McCormick, Cub fans out here today include Mike Mancuato from Hammond, Indiana,
- 34:14Larry Glick from Glenview, and Jesse Barron from Milwaukee.
- 34:21He says, hey, what's going on here, you've seen six games with the Cubs so far this spring,
- 34:26and he's picked losers all the time.
- 34:28Well, maybe here at Tempe against Seattle, Jesse Barron will see the Cubs come up with a victory.
- 34:34Throw it to first and run her back safely.
- 34:42Just Barron's frustrations, a Cub fan, he says, stem back to the Hank Sour days, fastball,
- 34:47and the big run and your misses low and away.
- 34:51So he's gotten behind on Gene Clines, the count is 2-0.
- 34:55Larry, coaching a third, flashes a hit or a sign as he steps out of the batter's box.
- 34:59Fairly deep and straightaway center field is Louis Delgado.
- 35:05Barney Sterling, they start to warm up any moment, here's the pitch, look out,
- 35:09he almost got hit by that one, he took a little off of the pitch, but he's way off.
- 35:13Our stock is now out of the dugout, and the veteran pitching coach is going out to see if he can settle him down.
- 35:21But we've heard about McCormick Lowe, he did not appear to be the kind of a guy who would have control problems.
- 35:26Well, he's firing now, and I guess Jetski has just eliminated any breaking pitch or let up,
- 35:33and he's having trouble, of course.
- 35:35I see that Glenn Abbott starting to warm up for Seattle, he wasn't due to pitch until the fifth inning.
- 35:42So this kid out here so far in the first inning into one batter who walked in this inning, Wallace,
- 35:50and also the clients, he must have thrown 50-some pitches already.
- 35:53I wonder if there might be anything wrong with him, they're going to take him out of the ballgame.
- 36:01Stock has been out here talking to him, and big Frank McCormick.
- 36:05Something must be wrong with his shoulder.
- 36:07Yeah, the way he's holding his right arm right close to the side as he trots off into the dugout behind third base,
- 36:13and Gary Nicholson, the trainer now for Seattle, is disappearing in that runway leading to their clubhouse
- 36:19behind third base, and Glenn Abbott coming on to work in relief.
- 36:24And while we have this delay in the action, let's take time out for this message.
- 36:28What makes Holloman's Old Style unique among beers and gives it that great light flavor?
- 36:39Well, our unique brewing process has a lot to do with it.
- 36:42We start with crystal clear water.
- 36:45Only sparkling, pure spring water is good enough for Old Style.
- 36:49Water that flows cold and clear from deep beneath the ground, some folks say all the way from Canada.
- 36:56We use this water in a traditional old world, pure brewing, double brewing process called poisoning.
- 37:03Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer, and the most expensive.
- 37:08And it's what gives Old Style its great light flavor.
- 37:12Try Old Style to a boat in God's country.
- 37:23G Holloman Brewing Company across Wisconsin.
- 37:29Glenn Abbott, of course, out of the Oakland A's organization.
- 37:32And there are an awful lot of ballplayers around the majors this year who can say that, out of the Oakland organization.
- 37:39Glenn is a big kid, 6'6", 200, a veteran now.
- 37:43Like he just recently celebrated his 26th birthday.
- 37:47Oakland last year, he was 2 and 4. He's been in the majors a little over two years.
- 37:53He turned when average was no bargain with Oakland a year ago, over 5.
- 37:58Worked 62 innings and he was hit hard, gave up 86 or 87 hits.
- 38:04Spring to springin', no doubt about it, even though I know you have some snow forecast in the Chicago area for tomorrow.
- 38:11You just know that spring is on its way.
- 38:14The Cubs will be swingin' into Wrigley Field to begin their first home stand of the season, a biggie.
- 38:20The Cubs will go three in a row with the New York Mets, Thursday, April 7th.
- 38:25Then on Good Friday, they will be off.
- 38:28They'll resume action with the Mets at Wrigley Field on Saturday and Sunday, April 9th and 10th.
- 38:35They'll be there for the season opener, April 7th.
- 38:38All-of-fame selectee Ernie Banks is slated to throw out the first ball.
- 38:42And if he's fast enough, he may run to home plate and hit it also.
- 38:46Blanky right-hander Rabbit with the Cormac obviously here.
- 39:11The principal owners of the ball club has been out here, not only takes part a lot in the workouts,
- 39:18but he is down in the dugouts before the game.
- 39:21And I don't know if he had a chance to talk to him today a little before the ball game or not,
- 39:26but he is really spirited about this ball club.
- 39:30Just merely to say hello and welcome him into Major League Baseball.
- 39:34Been a long-time baseball fan. He goes back, he says, to the days of Van Lingo Mungo.
- 39:40That's almost before your time.
- 39:44Almost. Anytime is before my time.
- 39:48Oh, you dreamer.
- 39:51Ready to go, he inherited a count of three and all.
- 39:54Fires and it's a strike call to fastball to Gene Klein.
- 39:58A good fastball by the big lanky Glenn Abbott.
- 40:01If he walks us better, of course, the walk would be charged to Frank McCormick.
- 40:05Now the count is three and one.
- 40:07Runner at first base, nobody out, one to nothing cups, runner goes,
- 40:10it runs, swung on and a high fly ball, channel right field.
- 40:13Digging in, Lee Stanton, he's there, makes the catch about 30 feet out in the grass.
- 40:18So Gene Klein is retired.
- 40:25Cut underneath on the hit and run. Wallace back at first base and here's George Midderwald.
- 40:30Been pretty consistent at the plate this frame.
- 40:33Letter and right hander, six hits and 18 at bats. Betted in only one run.
- 40:40But he's been coming up with those one for three days.
- 40:43Steve Swisher still with a bit of a sore shoulder.
- 40:47Although manager, him and Frank says there's nothing physically wrong with Swisher.
- 40:52Just doesn't like the way he's been swinging the bat or catching.
- 40:56But understanding is that Steve is still having a little bit of a problem with his shoulders.
- 41:02Pitch was a fast ball though and a throw to first base.
- 41:04Tires, Wallace barely got back in time.
- 41:07Colorful Ryan Luciano.
- 41:10The American League umpiring at first.
- 41:13Stretched by Abbott, here's the delivery.
- 41:15Midderwald swings and he fouls that one into the stands over to the first base side near the cup dugout.
- 41:23First time these two clubs met over here at Tempe.
- 41:26They drew only a little over 400 people.
- 41:28There are not a lot of Seattle fans down here in Arizona.
- 41:32Watch their expansion team. Abbott's pitch is high.
- 41:37Ball one, strike two on Midderwald.
- 41:39But there's certainly an awful lot of cup fans.
- 41:41And a lot of them journeyed over here to Tempe today to watch the Cuppies in action.
- 41:45Throw to first. Wallace back in standing this time.
- 41:53Went away. Cubs batting in the second inning.
- 41:55They lead one to nothing.
- 41:56There's a swing. Midderwald pulls a pace hit through the hole on the left side.
- 42:00Wallace will have to stop at second base.
- 42:02Midderwald coming through with his seventh hit of spring training.
- 42:07Cubs with runners at first and second.
- 42:09And Davey Rosello as the Cubs are employing the designated hitter today.
- 42:14Steps in. He is hitting 313 this spring with five hits in 16 at bat.
- 42:19He has a chance to drive in his second or third run of the spring season.
- 42:24Has one RBI so far this spring.
- 42:27Heading in the number nine spot.
- 42:30Went away. Here's the delivery.
- 42:32Abbott swung out. A base hit into left field.
- 42:34Dropping in front of the left fielder. Here's Wallace coming around third.
- 42:37Here's the throw from Tommy Smith. Cut off.
- 42:39And Midderwald gets back into second safely.
- 42:41The Cubs lead two to nothing as Davey Rosello finds a single.
- 42:46Here's six near the spring training and his second run batted in this spring.
- 42:50The Cubs have a two-nothing lead.
- 42:51Runners at first and second. And now it's Yvonne DeJesus at the top of the batting order up.
- 43:03Cubs with three hits for the day. Two off of Glenn Abbott.
- 43:06DeJesus walked, stole second, and he is six for six in stolen bases out here this spring.
- 43:14He scored on Steve Andoveris' opposite field double.
- 43:17Right hander in the bond. Delivers a strike right at the knees of Yvonne.
- 43:22Yvonne about five-ten.
- 43:24Pretty solidly built. Very compact.
- 43:30Was not exactly enthralled with Larry Barnett's call on that last pitch.
- 43:34He thought perhaps it was a little low on inside.
- 43:38Drilling holds. Strike one count on him with Midderwald at second base and Davey Rosello at first.
- 43:45DeJesus hitting with a closed stance.
- 43:47Here's the pitch. The right hander swings. A little fly ball in left field. Tommy Smith coming on.
- 43:52And he's there to make the bell tie catch. The runners get back to their bases.
- 43:56Cugon. He just missed. Dumping a little Texas Leaguer out there.
- 44:02With Cugon, Steve Andoveris. He doubled down the left field line. Steps in left-handed batter.
- 44:09Switch hitter, of course, but he'll back lefty against Abbott.
- 44:13Danny Kaye just walked by.
- 44:16He is completely caught up. Fascination of being an owner. One of the owners of Major League Ball Club.
- 44:24Looks at second. Fires outside. Turned the fastball over and it missed.
- 44:29Away from Andoveris.
- 44:32Danny Kaye is under no illusions about where this ball club is going to wind up in the standings this year,
- 44:37but he thinks that they have drafted well. They have a lot of young talent on the ball club.
- 44:42Swing and a ball at his bat. He didn't want to go after that one.
- 44:45He says rather than trying to go after a lot of rejects and veterans who are over the hill,
- 44:49he says we're trying to get as many young players as we can in the organization,
- 44:54which they can build a solid base for the future.
- 44:57And there's nothing wrong with that philosophy.
- 45:01Ball one. Strike one pitch. Swung out it. Drive over the third baseman's head. Another opposite field base hit.
- 45:07Here's a run scoring. Middler-Walk coming around third. It's going to be another double for Andoveris.
- 45:11Rosetto being waved to the plate. Five-penis lobbery. No play on him.
- 45:14And the Cubs lead 4-0. Back-to-back. Opposite field doubles by Steve Andoveris,
- 45:20who has now batted in three runs for the afternoon and eight for this spring training.
- 45:28Not too bad. Goes with that pitch beautifully.
- 45:32That's hit number three off Abbott in relief.
- 45:38And two of these runs charged against him.
- 45:46The Cubs with a 4-0 lead. A runner at second and stepping in is Greg Gross, a left-handed hitting outfielder.
- 45:52He looks at the ball going away.
- 45:56I'm sorry. It's a strike call.
- 46:01Abbott looks at Andoveris. There's a curve swing out and he drives it into center field. It's in there for a base hit.
- 46:07The runner goes. Here's the throw. A little late. Slides and he is in there safely. Gross with a stolen base.
- 46:17Well, one thing about the Cubs this spring, while their one lost record is certainly no bargain,
- 46:22there is a tremendous improvement in their stolen base department.
- 46:25They are now 12 for 12 in stolen bases this spring.
- 46:29And that's four more stolen bases than they had out here last spring.
- 46:34Of course, that was an abbreviated spring training period because of the lockout.
- 46:38As a swing by Mercer, he gets under the pitch and fouls it back. It's out of play into the crowd.
- 46:43So at the count is ball one, strike one on Bobby.
- 46:48Gross in scoring position with two gone.
- 46:55And the Cubs out in front, five to nothing. They have five hits.
- 46:58We're only in the second inning. The pitch by Abbott. Curve ball swung out. He drives a fly ball to left field.
- 47:03It should be caught. Tommy Smith is there in the sunshine and he grabs it to retire the side.
- 47:08Mercer is a D.H. is 0 for 2 today. But a big second inning for the Cubs.
- 47:13Four runs in the inning. One walk, four base hits.
- 47:18One man left on at the end of one and a half innings of play.
- 47:21At Tempe, Arizona, the Cubs lead Seattle, five to nothing.

- 48:11The Seattle acquired last November in the expansion draft from California.
- 48:20It's going to be leading off.
- 48:21He had a very disappointing season last year after having a pretty fine season in 75.
- 48:3175 is his best year in the majors, setting career highs and leading the Angels with 14 homers
- 48:37and 82 runs batted in, snapping the right enter, checks his swing, crew goes, pitch hits his bat and goes foul.
- 48:43Jim Busby, familiar name, Chicago, played with the White Sox back in the 50s, coaching at third base.
- 48:49And Vada Pinson, another fine former Major League outfielder, coaching at first.
- 48:53Crew goes delivery, fastball, the right enter misses outside.
- 48:57Ball one, strike one on Lee Stanton.
- 49:02Went to California, the Mets in 72.
- 49:07Played five years with the Angels.
- 49:09Swings and he gets under it.
- 49:10It's a high foul.
- 49:11It is back out of play, right over our heads.
- 49:14Five-nothing Cubbies.
- 49:16With Seattle batting in the second inning, Stanton is to be followed by the first baseman, Danny Meyer, and then Joe Liss.
- 49:23Who hopes to make it in the majors this year, he has been a tremendous power hitter in the minor leagues.
- 49:28Liss has.
- 49:30Driscoll winds, right enter's pitch, curve, and he just missed the inside corner.
- 49:35Ball two, strike one on right-handed hitting Lee Stanton.
- 49:38He is seven for 21 this spring, Stanton is.
- 49:43Two-two delivery.
- 49:45Jamsey with it, he swings, fouls it back out of play.
- 49:49Driscoll with a good live arm.
- 50:00Faces are empty, Angels batting in the second.
- 50:03Mike Driscoll's next pitch, fastball, just missed the outside corner.
- 50:08To run the cap to three and two, Middlewall thought they had the batter looking at strike three.
- 50:12Larry Barnett, America League play dump fire, said uh-huh.
- 50:17Cubs with five runs and five hits.
- 50:20Angels went down in order against Grouko in the first inning.
- 50:22Here's Mike's next delivery, swung on and a drive over the second baseman's head.
- 50:25It's going to split the gap between right and center field and rolling all the way out there near the fence.
- 50:30Picked up drop for the center fielder, dropped again, and that will permit the runner to go to third base.
- 50:35As Tarsen and Joe Wallace could not find a handle on the ball.
- 50:40Pick it up once, dropped it.
- 50:43Pick it up again, dropped it.
- 50:46I'd give them a double and an error, but let's see what they're going to call it.
- 50:54Right between Wallace and Grouse, no error has been posted yet.
- 50:58They have a runner at third base.
- 51:00With nobody out, left-handed hitting and Danny Meyer steps in.
- 51:05It's 2.52 with Detroit a year ago. He swings, pulls the pitch foul, goes over in front of the cup dugout behind first base.
- 51:13This spring, Meyer hitting the 2.67 with three runs batted in, four hits for him.
- 51:22Runner at third, five-nothing, Cubs lead. Angels batting in the second inning.
- 51:30Wind up by Mike Krugel. Here's the pitch, fastball low and inside. Struck at left, held up in time.
- 51:38With Detroit last year, Meyer got into 105 ballgames.
- 51:462.52, he's batting average, hit only two homers, 16 runs batted in.
- 51:51Here's the pitch, and the left-hander swings, a drive in the left field. Going back forward, it seems quiet, and it's well hit.
- 51:56Obrey's head bounces over that high, dark green wall for a ground-rule double.
- 52:01And the Angels are on the board, it's five to one Cubs.
- 52:11Opposite field, ground-rule double. Off the bat is Danny Meyer.
- 52:22So Krugel, after putting the side down in order in the first inning, in this inning, has been greeted by two extra base hits and given up for one.
- 52:31Mind's full by that ball. He didn't think it was going to carry that far out in left field.
- 52:35And here's Joe Liss, who with Toledo in the minors last year, hit 30 with home runs. Slightly close stance for Liss.
- 52:43He's three for eight this spring for Seattle. The right-hander checks his swing, and Krugel misses down low, ball one.
- 52:51Liss has had a couple of shots. The majors never quite reached the potential a lot of people think he has.
- 53:00He goes after a fast ball that's down and in on him, and he fouls it out of play.
- 53:07He is 30 years old, drafted from the Cleveland organization, married, has three children.
- 53:20Krugel looking at the runner at second. Nobody out. Here's the pitch.
- 53:23Joe Liss swings, and there's a drive. Klein's coming out of left field. He reaches down, gets that ball just before it hits the grass.
- 53:30Wheels are thrown into second base, not quite in time.
- 53:32To nail the runner, Danny Meyer is getting back there, sinking the liner.
- 53:36To Gene Klein in left field for the first out of the second inning.
- 53:42And that brings up Kurt Bavacqua. He was with the Pittsburgh Pirates a few years ago.
- 53:49Bavacqua, three for six this spring.
- 53:54And he remembers playing in Wrigley Field for the Pittsburgh Pirates, coming up with one hit in three at-bats that day.
- 54:02Right-hander swings widely, almost went to his knees, and he chopped the foul back out of play.
- 54:09Five to one. The score and the Cubs out in front. Up Seattle, we're in the bottom of the second inning at Tempe, Arizona.
- 54:18Bavacqua broke into professional ball, the Miners, in 1967, ten years ago.
- 54:26Krukel in the stretch with a runner at second base.
- 54:29And he gets him back there as he fakes making a throw at a second, with the shortstop DeJesus taking a couple of steps toward the bag.
- 54:39Bavacqua played a little bit with Milwaukee last year, but very little. He spent most of that season at Spokane, where he hit.337.
- 54:45Pitch, the right-hander swings, chops a foul ball, bounces up and hits him before rolling over to the first base side of the plate.
- 54:51And the count on Bavacqua goes to.02.
- 54:58This is a guy you may recall who won the National League Bubble Gum Blowing Contest a couple of years ago.
- 55:08Great performance.
- 55:10Here's the pitch. Fastball. It's too high.
- 55:14All one, strike two, one gone. A runner at second base.
- 55:22Seattle batting in the bottom of the second inning against young Mike Krukel.
- 55:26Looks the runner back to second, comes to the plate, a fastball swing on the ground ball to DeJesus, gets it on a nice hop, straightens up at the back, dug out of the dirt by Larry Bittner.
- 55:36DeJesus, throwing that ball about three feet in front of the dirt over to Bittner.
- 55:42He's got a strong enough arm.
- 55:46That was not one of his better throws, but Bittner scooped it up cleanly. The runner holding at second base, they're two gone.
- 55:53Jimmy Sexton, who spent last year in the minors, hopes to make it to the majors this year, steps in. The right-hander takes a ball in too close.
- 56:00And Mike Krukel wants another baseball.
- 56:03A spring, Sexton, two for 11 for Seattle.
- 56:06You know, whether it's your mom, your wife, your sweetheart, or the gal next door,
- 56:10get your best gal and take her out to the ball game at Wrigley Field on Sunday, April 10th, Ladies' Bout of Day.
- 56:16The first 15,000 ladies to come to Wrigley Field accompanied by a fully-paid adult male receive a blue-white-brim foldable hat at the Cubs' C on front.
- 56:25There's a pitch, breaking ball, missed inside.
- 56:29And he finds himself behind two and 0.
- 56:32That's Ladies' Bout of Day Sunday at Wrigley Field, March 3rd or April 10th.
- 56:36The Cubs will be taking on the New York Mets.
- 56:40He misses inside, ball three.
- 56:44First home stand of the season.
- 56:46Thursday, April 7th, will be the lift lifter at Wrigley Field against the Mets.
- 56:52Pitching matchups, May 5, Ray Burris going against Tom Seaver, who seems to be disenchanted with the Mets front office again.
- 57:01Trio delivery, fastball, he pumped that one right in.
- 57:05The batter was taking all the way.
- 57:09Five-one the score here at Tempe, Arizona this afternoon.
- 57:12The Cubs with the lead.
- 57:14Two gone, a runner at second base.
- 57:16Skip Judgy the catcher in the on-deck circle.
- 57:19Fastball, strike call.
- 57:21Boy, that Kruko loop shows some blazing speed when he has to, doesn't he?
- 57:24Oh, yes. He's got it. He can rear back and fire.
- 57:27He's been working on a let-up and a curveball here in this inning,
- 57:31staying away from that fastball because the first two hitters stayed back and was waiting for the fastball.
- 57:36They got it. The results were base hits.
- 57:38Three-two pitch.
- 57:39Threw it right by him, swung on a miss for strike three.
- 57:42Well, he opened the ball game, the first inning, with a strikeout, and he ends the second inning with a strikeout.
- 57:46So after the first two batters got on with extra base hits, they managed only one run, and one man is left out, and at the end of two.
- 57:53Cubs come to bat. Leading off will be Larry Bittner, and the Cubs lead Seattle 5-1.
- 57:58General Finance, Bob Adams speaking.
- 58:02Bob, you've got to talk him out of it.
- 58:04Talk who out of what?
- 58:05It's on its way now.
- 58:06Who is this?
- 58:07Iris Bluestain.
- 58:08Iris?
- 58:09Fly from that well-known athlete and adventurer, Bernie Bluestain.
- 58:11Oh, Bernie Bluestain.
- 58:12You don't remember, do you?
- 58:13No, I don't.
- 58:14Bob, whose mountain climbing expedition to Mount LaRue during the rock slide season did you finance two years ago?
- 58:18It's coming back to me.
- 58:19And whose balloon ascension over Lake Tanawanda in an electrical storm did you make possible last September?
- 58:23Got you.
- 58:24Last week he discovered that the 1947 record for water skiing in the entire length of the Mississippi has never been broken.
- 58:29You don't mean?
- 58:30All the way from St. Louis to Carow on his left leg.
- 58:33He broke the record.
- 58:34Oh, his left leg. Bob, whatever he's got in mind next, you've got to talk him out of it.
- 58:39Well, I'll do what I can, Mrs. Dumb.
- 58:40Thank you, Bob. Thank you.
- 58:42Well, you can always get a little help from a friend at General Finance.
- 58:44I mean, our medical bills have been astronomical.
- 58:46You can also get a loan.
- 58:48There are 60 General Finance offices in Chicagoland. Call friendly Bob Adams to borrow up to $10,000. Call and over 32020.
- 58:59Larry Bittner is to lead off against Glen Appet as this ballgame now goes into the third inning.
- 59:10Bittner lined out to the second baseman to retire the Cubs in the first inning.
- 59:14Not off to a very fast start this spring. Five for 28.
- 59:20Well below the 200 mark, he'll be followed by Tarzan Joe Wallace and then Gene Clines, and we hope for a few more.
- 59:27Abbott, the big veteran right-hander, came on when in the second inning, starting pitcher Frank McCormick came up with an injury that has not yet been a knot, probably to his shoulder.
- 59:39Lined up first pitch of all. Fastball swung down, and there's a drive. It's out in the left field.
- 59:44Larry Bittner is on with an opposite field liner over the shortstop's head.
- 59:50So he's one for two today. That for the Cubs is their fifth hit off of Abbott.
- 59:57They've given up five hits in five innings in previous work for Seattle this spring.
- 1:00:03Wallace walked leading off the second inning, still second base.
- 1:00:14Came in on Rosello's base hit, and he takes the curve too low.
- 1:00:19Vince Lloyd, Muboudro, reporting here at Tempe with bright sunshine.
- 1:00:24As usual out here in the valley of the sun.
- 1:00:31Abbott in the stretch. Runner doesn't go, and a ball outside.
- 1:00:362-0. Rick Ruschel is slated to start tomorrow in our broadcast of Leon, starting with Lowe in the leadoff man at 1.40 tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:00:50Chicago time, a ball too low.
- 1:00:54Lap Galasso, a young man who's, tell us there's a pretty good curve ball that's scheduled to start that one for Seattle.
- 1:01:02Look at first base. Bittner's short lead to pitch a fastball, taking the first strike.
- 1:01:06Ball three, strike one. Wallace taking 3-0.
- 1:01:10Now let's see if they give him the green light on 3-1.
- 1:01:18But they're still a fairly short lead. There he goes on. Pitch is high and outside, a run and hit that time.
- 1:01:26Ball four puts runners at first and second.
- 1:01:29That's the first walk issued by Abbott, and only his second this frame.
- 1:01:36With nobody out, Cub runners at first and second.
- 1:01:39Cubbies leading 5-1. Gene Clines was in the batter's box when McCormick had to leave the ballgame.
- 1:01:45And Abbott came on, inherited a 3-0 comp, but he got Clines.
- 1:01:53They have to run a little fly ball to right field. Gene takes it. High, ball one.
- 1:02:03Runner at second is Bittner. The runner at first base is Joe Wallace.
- 1:02:08Glenn Abbott, Glenn Abbott, out of the Oakland organization on the hill.
- 1:02:13Look at second to pitch. Fast ball, misses inside. De Quine's a right-hander.
- 1:02:21Peanut Lowry, coaching at third, was doing some special tutoring the other day over at the Cubs training camp at Scottsdale
- 1:02:28on base runners with their leads, particularly at second base.
- 1:02:39Abbott has his side. Here's the pitch De Quine swung on. Ground ball back up the middle, and it's in there for a base hit.
- 1:02:44Here comes Bittner flying around third. He was scoring recently, but Wallace will have to stop at second base.
- 1:02:49Gene Clines hit one just in the third base side of the mound, out of the reach of the short staff of Vauqua
- 1:02:54and the second baseman Jimmy Sexton. Still nobody out. The Cubs have a 6-1 lead.
- 1:02:59Runners at first and second, and George Bitterwald will be the batter. He's singled in the second inning and scored.
- 1:03:08The Cubs having a little fun this afternoon. That's hit number six off of Abbott.
- 1:03:12And for the Cubs, their seventh hit of the afternoon. Third inning.
- 1:03:18Betch to Bitterwald, and he takes a strike over the outside corner. Good fast ball.
- 1:03:30Cards in a pretty good lead at second base. Clines, good speed at first. Here's the pitch.
- 1:03:35Bitterwald that's way into the dirt, and Skip Jutty does a nice job blocking the ball, preventing it from going by him.
- 1:03:45Stars and stripes in the flagpole behind the 425-foot mark. Hanging pretty limp right now.
- 1:03:50The breeze has died down completely. Here's the pitch. Swung on. Pulls the ground ball base hit through the left side.
- 1:03:55Here's Wallace, probably waving him to the plate. Here is the throw to the plate. It is cut off, and the Cubs pick up another run.
- 1:04:02Betch to Bitterwald drives into his second run this spring with his second straight hit of the afternoon.
- 1:04:09Three hits in this inning with a walk in between. And when Abbott came out in the second inning, they got four base hits off of him.
- 1:04:16Three singles and a double by Anabaris. And now Davey Rosello, who's singled, and drove it around in the second inning, steps into the batter's box.
- 1:04:23There is still nobody out.
- 1:04:287-1, Cubbies. Sounds good. Curveball. He misses inside. Very little break to it.
- 1:04:38Bitterwald is two for two today, and Anabaris is two for two with two doubles and three runs batted in for Anabaris.
- 1:04:467-1 score, Cubs. Finds a runner at second. That checks him. Drows another curve, and it misses high.
- 1:04:54Missed with two breaking pitches to Davey. He's heading well this spring. Way over the 300 mark.
- 1:05:07Two runs here in the third. Ford the second, one in the first inning. Abbott looks again at second.
- 1:05:12Fastball swung on. He pulls the ground ball past the third base, but off his glove. Shortstop picks it up on the seat of his pants, and he has no play anywhere.
- 1:05:19That'll be an infield single to load the bases. Juan Bernac moved quickly to his left, but all he could do was deflect the ball.
- 1:05:27And Bavac with the shortstop got it, but he was sitting down when he finally fielded the ball.
- 1:05:33Four hits in the inning. Nobody out. Bases loaded, and here is Ivan DeJesus, who has walked and flied out to left field.
- 1:05:41Let's see if he can get his first hit of the day.
- 1:05:50Nine hits so far for the Cubs today. Curveball right over the top, and it's way off the mark.
- 1:05:57Nowhere near the strike zone, low and outside. Abbott tried a couple of curveballs, first two pitches.
- 1:06:03DeRosello couldn't find the strike zone. There's a curve here, and he's way low and outside with it.
- 1:06:08Bases are jammed. Let's see if he's going to challenge this hitter.
- 1:06:12Ivan DeJesus. Fastball, it's high and tight, backed him away from the plate with that one.
- 1:06:18And he now finds himself in a hole, 2-0, with the bases jammed and nobody out.
- 1:06:25Tough inning for Mr. Abbott. So was the second inning when he came on earlier than scheduled.
- 1:06:30Fastball swung on. DeJesus hits a little foul ball off his body, winds up in front of the plate.
- 1:06:36Ball two, strike one on Ivan. Cup fans, I think, are going to like Mr. DeJesus.
- 1:06:49It's good speed, good glove, and here this spring he's hit pretty well.
- 1:06:54Here's the pitch to him. Foul as Abbott came down and in on him.
- 1:06:59Looks like the pitch might have been out of the strike zone. But to count those, tip two and two.
- 1:07:06He took a rip at it.
- 1:07:08Quines, the baserunner at third. Mitterwald at second base, and Davy Rezello, the baserunner at first.
- 1:07:14They're playing fairly much straight away.
- 1:07:17Abbott from the stretch. Fastball swung on. Bouncing ball past the third baseman, base hit into left field.
- 1:07:21Here's Quines coming around to score. Here's Mitterwald coming in.
- 1:07:25And the Cubs increase the lead. It is now nine to one.
- 1:07:30As DeJesus comes through with two runs batted in, giving him four for the spring.
- 1:07:36And this one is really turning into a rough.
- 1:07:39Stopping at second base was Davy Rezello.
- 1:07:46That's the fifth hit in this inning off Abbott.
- 1:07:51The pitching coach going out to talk to him. He's got nobody throwing in that bullpen.
- 1:07:56He's just having trouble with all kinds of pitches, isn't he?
- 1:07:59Yes, he's hit the bat quite frequently.
- 1:08:02You can say that he's had a tough inning, but the guy that actually has had a tougher goal of it than pitchers right here is that fur catcher, Jetski.
- 1:08:11He's been jumping around behind that plate for the first three innings here.
- 1:08:17He's caught a cold with the wind of the runners coming in and passing him up touching on plate.
- 1:08:22Well, it's only nine to one right now.
- 1:08:25Hello, Blake. Blake Cullen, formerly traveling secretary of the Cubs and now director of public relations for the National League.
- 1:08:34Stopping by. We're ready to go. The pitch down to Maris. He swings and he smashes the base hit into right field.
- 1:08:40Here comes Rezello around third. He's being waved to the plate.
- 1:08:43It is now ten to one Cubs and Onoverus has batted in his fourth run of the ballgame.
- 1:08:49He had two opposite field doubles. They hold him to a single this time and he pulled it sharply past the first baseman out to the right fielder, Lee Steff.
- 1:08:58So Onoverus, who started the day hitting 182, now is three for three with seven hits in his first 25 at bats this break.
- 1:09:07You just have to envy Blake. He's going to be a native New Yorker in just a couple of months.
- 1:09:12He's really going to stay there looking forward to all those nice Broadway plays.
- 1:09:17Yeah.
- 1:09:18You're that type, good kid.
- 1:09:20I mean, huh?
- 1:09:22You don't.
- 1:09:23That's true. Your heart's still in Chicago.
- 1:09:25Beautiful San Francisco.
- 1:09:27Where's my car?
- 1:09:28Your car's where?
- 1:09:30A lot of gets too, probably.
- 1:09:32Good place. Keep it right by Wrigley Field. We may have to borrow it from time to time, Blake.
- 1:09:39Runners at first and third and Greg Gross in there, takes the ball.
- 1:09:42He is singled and fouled out today, batted in a run, still on the base, and he takes it too low.
- 1:09:52Yeah, there's still nobody out in this inning.
- 1:09:56Runners at first and third.
- 1:09:59Six hits and a walk so far off habit in this inning. There's a strike for the outside corner.
- 1:10:05Want to read about Greg Gross, Bobby Mercer, Gene Fines, Yvonne De Heisus, all newcomers to the Cubs.
- 1:10:13Here's a swing and he taps one to the shortstop. He's got it possibly to second for one.
- 1:10:16The relay, long stretch by Meyer for the up.
- 1:10:19Double play. What a run scores on it to make it 11 to 1 Cubs.
- 1:10:27Joe, for a change, Abbott is going to work from a windup.
- 1:10:33Let's see how he handles that.
- 1:10:35Bobby Mercer, the ninth Cub to step in in this inning.
- 1:10:39In the batter's box with nobody on base.
- 1:10:48He has to jump back out of the way of a pitch low and inside. Ball one on him.
- 1:10:54Six runs in this inning.
- 1:10:58Six hits so far and a walk. There's a ball, fastball, missing inside.
- 1:11:03Want to read about Bobby Mercer and all the rest of the new Cubs.
- 1:11:06About 50 pages of biographies, statistics, and all the players.
- 1:11:09Here's a swing and he bounces one to second baseman.
- 1:11:12Jimmy Sexton has it and Bobby Mercer in the Cubs.
- 1:11:14Finally Abbott in the third. They bat a round.
- 1:11:17The new Cub, spring roster book, is yours for just a dollar plus 25 cents for mailing and handling.
- 1:11:23Roster book, Wrigley Field, Chicago, 60613.
- 1:11:27Six runs, six hits, and nobody left on the bases.
- 1:11:30It is now the Cubs 11, Seattle 1.
- 1:11:37You know Lou, I think Al Gaines travels almost as much as we do
- 1:11:40with those car buying trips that he takes to Detroit every other week.
- 1:11:43Well you know Al logs a lot of air miles, that's right.
- 1:11:45But we should tell the fans we're talking about Al Gaines, president of the fireside Chrysler Plymouth.
- 1:11:50Yeah, I guess we should also tell them that when it comes to one of a kind, executive driven cars,
- 1:11:54there's no doubt about it, Al Gaines keeps fireside ahead.
- 1:11:56Vince is right fans, Al flies to Detroit every other week to purchase luxurious autos
- 1:12:01pre-driven by Chrysler Corporation executives.
- 1:12:04These cars have really been babied. In some cases they're barely broken in.
- 1:12:08And in most cases they're loaded with expensive options and it costs you thousands of dollars
- 1:12:12to order a new car with all the elegant, convenience equipment that these cars have.
- 1:12:16But because these autos have been driven and because Al buys volume, saves bundles, you do too.
- 1:12:22Save on Chrysler Imperials, down and country wagons, New Yorkers, Newports, Cordovas,
- 1:12:27or pick a Dodge Monaco, or a Plymouth Duster, Satellite, Fury.
- 1:12:31Fireside has them all and there's always between 25 and 50 in stock at Chrysler Plymouth.
- 1:12:36Fireside on Golf Road just west of the Woodfield shopping center out in Schaumburg.
- 1:12:40If you want something really special in an executive car, there's no doubt about it.
- 1:12:44Fireside Chrysler Plymouth is the place to shop.
- 1:12:47Skip Judgy, ninth man in the batting order, steps in on the first pitch, a fastball high to the right-hander.
- 1:12:54Takes that one. It misses inside at the letters.
- 1:12:57Letterin Judgy, the Houston organization last year.
- 1:13:01Counted him, 2-0.
- 1:13:04Getting only 188 this spring for Darryl Johnson's Seattle Ball Club.
- 1:13:08There's a fastball. Kruko misses low with that one. 3-0 now.
- 1:13:13Mike gave up extra base hits to Stanton and Meyer leading off the second inning.
- 1:13:19That's a lot. One run, two hits. Struck out two men.
- 1:13:22No walks up until that pitch, which missed inside for ball four.
- 1:13:28It's only the third walk that Mike has issued out here this spring,
- 1:13:33and he's now worth nine in the third inning.
- 1:13:35So control has not been his problem, at least up to now.
- 1:13:39Louis Delgado is struck out, leading off the first inning, steps in.
- 1:13:44From Puerto Rico, started the day hitting.458 for Seattle this spring.
- 1:13:49Strike called in a good curve, had him backing away from the plate, and it broke over the inside corner.
- 1:13:57Strike one count.
- 1:13:59Rudder at first. Let's see if the Cubs can come up with a double play.
- 1:14:02Fastball this time, swung on. He lifts the fly ball to the right fielder, Greg Gross, who parks under it.
- 1:14:07Playing him almost perfectly, moved about one step.
- 1:14:11Opposite field fly ball, retires Delgado, and brings up the left-handed hitting young Tommy Smith.
- 1:14:23Cincinnati and San Diego have the honor of opening the National League season this year.
- 1:14:29At Cincinnati, of course, that's where they open traditionally.
- 1:14:34That'll be a couple of days before the Cubs take on the Mets in Chicago.
- 1:14:37Here's the pitch.
- 1:14:39Fastball lead inside. Tommy Smith, leaned back away, lost his balance, and staggered out of the batter's box.
- 1:14:46Eleven to one score, Cubs leading.
- 1:14:51We're not going to be too relaxed with that lead.
- 1:14:56Blake Shuckle. He went to Reggie Field last year when we had him at Philadelphia, I think, 16 to nothing.
- 1:15:02This is a good young pitcher.
- 1:15:04Trucco? Yeah, yeah. Really good. I think he's going to make it.
- 1:15:09Sure hope so.
- 1:15:11Your heart's still with the Cubs, huh?
- 1:15:13All the way.
- 1:15:14I don't believe it.
- 1:15:17Like into the stretch. Strike. Had him take an outlet.
- 1:15:22Ball one, strike one.
- 1:15:25Kind of anxious, blue, to get a look at Rick Ruschel tomorrow.
- 1:15:28Hope he's going to be in the groove.
- 1:15:30Yes, this is the second time around for most of these pitchers, and they should be improving in so far as strength in the arm.
- 1:15:36That's a swing.
- 1:15:37Foul ball. Chopped right at the plate.
- 1:15:38Can't say that about Burr's his second time around or third time around.
- 1:15:41Second and third time.
- 1:15:42I don't know what happened to him because the first time out he looked perfect.
- 1:15:46Of course it might be a good sign also, which means that he can't sit back on his laurels.
- 1:15:51He'll have to work a little bit now.
- 1:15:53That first outing perhaps gave him too much of an idea that he's ready.
- 1:15:58One-two delivery with one out of man on.
- 1:16:00It takes the fast ball a little bit low.
- 1:16:02Burr has been getting his stuff up high.
- 1:16:06And it has been sailing out of the ballpark with great frequency.
- 1:16:11His last two starts.
- 1:16:17One gone around Rick first. Skip Dutsey does not have good speed, doesn't go.
- 1:16:21Three-two pitch swung on. He loops a little fly ball out to the left of the other Gene Clines.
- 1:16:25Moves to his left. Wind carries it a little bit and he hauls it in easily.
- 1:16:28They're two gone. Dutsey still at first base.
- 1:16:31That'll bring up one Bernhardt.
- 1:16:34Right hander.
- 1:16:45I did not see Bonham work the other day in the B-squad game where they just split the squad.
- 1:16:51Curveball by Mike is in for a strike call, but they say that Monom is throwing pretty well.
- 1:17:00Strike one count and the right-hander hitting one Bernhardt.
- 1:17:04Runner at first is Dutsey. They're not holding him on.
- 1:17:06Fast ball did not hold up in time.
- 1:17:08The pitch looked like it was out of the strike zone, down and away to him.
- 1:17:12He started to go after it. He wanted to hold up, but he'd committed himself.
- 1:17:15So Mike is out in front of this hitter, nothing and two.
- 1:17:19With two gone, Cubs romping 11-1 the pitch.
- 1:17:22Fast ball swung on, ground ball to DeJesus, the shortstop has it.
- 1:17:25Quick throw to Rosetto. He feels it for the 4-South that retires, Seattle in the third.
- 1:17:29No runs, no hits, and they leave one man on.
- 1:17:32So at the end of three, Cubbies lead 11-1.
- 1:17:37Well, you probably don't go to your True Value hardware store just to buy batteries.
- 1:17:41You probably pick up some while you're there though, just because you happen to see them at the checkout counter.
- 1:17:46Well, here's a good reason to go to your True Value hardware store just to buy batteries.
- 1:17:51Now you can get a four-pack of EverReady C or D-sized batteries for just 77 cents.
- 1:17:56You might not need batteries right now, but remember those times when you needed a flashlight and the batteries were dead?
- 1:18:02Or the time you were going to the beach with your portable radio?
- 1:18:05Guess what? No batteries.
- 1:18:07Well, those are not the times to go to the store for batteries, but now is the time.
- 1:18:12A four-pack of EverReady C or D-sized batteries are just 77 cents in the hardware week circular from participating True Value hardware stores.
- 1:18:21We finished three, and so far good news. Cubs with a 10-run lead.
- 1:18:26We finished three, and so far looks great. Cubs with 11 runs on 11 hits, and Seattle with one run on two hits.
- 1:18:31Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau. Lou, come on in. Let's keep it going, huh?
- 1:18:35Thank you, Vince. Cubs batted a round in the third inning to score six runs after scoring four in the second and third.
- 1:18:43And we're going to have a great game.
- 1:18:45We're going to have a great game.
- 1:18:47We're going to have a great game.
- 1:18:49Thank you, Vince. Cubs batted a round in the third inning to score six runs after scoring four in the second and one in the first.
- 1:18:58Abbott has been no puzzle whatsoever to the Cubs. He's allowed the Cubs nine hits, nine runs.
- 1:19:06Number 26, Larry Stenberg, in third base.
- 1:19:15Now here's Bittner at bat. He started the six-run inning. He swings and pops one foul down the left field line.
- 1:19:21The hitting star thus far, Ontiveros, who has two doubles and a single four RBIs, and he knows that he can hit.
- 1:19:30It's just the problem of whether he can field in the position of third base.
- 1:19:34Here's a swing of the line drive fair ball. Down the left field line, another extra base hit.
- 1:19:39Bittner rounds first, will go into second, rounds second, but holds up as Smith gets that ball in quickly and holds Bittner to a double.
- 1:19:47Now Bittner has two for three, and that's the third double of the game thus far for Cubs.
- 1:19:54Ontiveros with two, Bittner here with one.
- 1:19:58So he's on second, nobody out. Here's Wallace, who has walked twice.
- 1:20:07The Cubs having a little fun, swinging the bats, making contact.
- 1:20:11Now with 11 hits to their credit. First pitch by Abbott, curveball strike call.
- 1:20:19Abbott has allowed 10 hits in eight months in his stint when he relieved McCormick in the second inning.
- 1:20:28Wallace takes that pitch inside as he jumps away from that curveball.
- 1:20:33One and one, the count.
- 1:20:38Abbott, tall right-hander, formerly with Oakland, checks Bittner at second, the pitch to Wallace on its way.
- 1:20:46Check his swing as the ball is high. Ball two, strike one.
- 1:21:00The stretch, the pitch, outside the ball three. Three and one now.
- 1:21:07Well the Cubs having some fun today with hits and runs.
- 1:21:11We understand the White Sox scored 12 runs in one inning today.
- 1:21:16Here's a swing and a foul. Full count now on Wallace, three and two.
- 1:21:24The Asus has one for three, Ontiveros three for three, Gross one for three.
- 1:21:30Mercer, the designated hitter, hasn't had a hit thus far.
- 1:21:34Bittner has two for three. Wallace, oh, because he has walked twice.
- 1:21:40He swings, it's a ground ball-based hit on the right field.
- 1:21:43So he adds his name to the hitting contest here.
- 1:21:46Here's a throw and Bittner scores. The throw is off of the glove of Jutzi, the catcher.
- 1:21:52And there's Wallace going to third. He goes to second on the throw.
- 1:21:56And I would say an error on the catcher which allows Wallace to go to third.
- 1:22:01Wallace, singles to right, driving in his first run of the day.
- 1:22:05The score is now 12 to one, Cubs. Charged Jutzi, the catcher, with an air.
- 1:22:15So everyone in the Cubs lineup except the designated hitter, Mercer, with at least one hit.
- 1:22:23Now here's Klein at bat. He has one for two.
- 1:22:26WGN Chicago in. The pitch, swing and a miss. Strike one on Klein.
- 1:22:33Mubaka at short. Sexton at second.
- 1:22:38Therein, one step from the field grass, which is natural turf here.
- 1:22:44Here's the pitch. Curve ball outside. Jutzi moves out quickly, gloves it. It's now one and one.
- 1:22:50Bernheit at third, even with the bag.
- 1:22:54And the first baseman, Meyer, even with the bag at first.
- 1:22:58One and one pitch by Abbott. Curve ball outside once again. Ball two, strike one.
- 1:23:08Jutzi has caught a double hitter already, and we're just in the fourth inning.
- 1:23:12Abbott feels like he's pitched a double hitter.
- 1:23:15Here's a swing and ground ball, and a third baseman.
- 1:23:18Grabs that ball backhanded, tags the runner sliding back into third.
- 1:23:22He's safe at third, a long throw to first, and Klein beats it out for a base hit.
- 1:23:28But let me tell you, Bernheit made a great play, moving over the bag in fair territory, backhanging the ball.
- 1:23:34And fortunately for Wallace, he retreated and slid into the third base ahead of the tag by Bernheit.
- 1:23:42By the time Bernheit straightened up and threw to first, Klein beat it out for a base hit.
- 1:23:47So that's Klein's second hit of the day, the twelfth hit for the Cubs.
- 1:23:54And now here's Middlerwall at bat, runners on first and third. Curve ball, strike called.
- 1:24:01One run in. Wallace at third, Klein's at first. Nobody out.
- 1:24:08Here's the pitch. Inside, ball two.
- 1:24:12Correction on that count, it's one and one. The first pitch was a called strike to Middlerwall.
- 1:24:21The pitch, swing and a miss on a good inside fastball, strike two.
- 1:24:26No action in the Seattle bullpen.
- 1:24:30There he is, infielers now at double plate dip. Curve ball, swing and a high, long foul ball down the left field line.
- 1:24:49So Middlerwall gets another opportunity. He's seen a lot of action this spring behind the plate.
- 1:24:55Fighting for a job, hoping to beat out Swisher.
- 1:25:01He has two hits and two appearances at the plate today, one RBI.
- 1:25:06The pitch by Abbott, swing and a line drive base hit to left field.
- 1:25:10Wallace will score as Smith takes that ball on the first bounce, throws in the second base to hold Klein's to second.
- 1:25:17Cubs continue to get base hits. That's their 13th hit of the day, or 15th I should say.
- 1:25:26McCormick allowed one hit before he left with a sore arm in the second inning.
- 1:25:37It's now 13 to 1, Cubs, and here's Rosello who has two for two.
- 1:25:46I wonder how Mercer feels, sitting on the bench as the designated hitter and he's 0 for 3.
- 1:25:52There's a swing and a pop foul out of play.
- 1:25:57Rosello levels that bat over the play. Here's the pitch.
- 1:26:15It's a strike call.
- 1:26:20Abbott into the stretch. Nobody out. Runners on first and second. Curve ball high.
- 1:26:32Ball one.
- 1:26:37Here's a stretch by Abbott. Curve ball and he swings and fouls that ball and throwing the bat clear down to the third base coach.
- 1:26:55He's still alive though, 0 and 2.
- 1:27:12Abbott looks in, gets a sign from Judsey. The stretch, here's the pitch to Rosello. Inside, ball one.
- 1:27:25Cubs having a little fun here. The score is now 13 to 1 in favor of the Cubs.
- 1:27:33And we're in the fourth inning. Here's a ball high and inside.
- 1:27:40Full count now, 3 and 2 on Davie Rosello who was hitting in the ninth spot.
- 1:27:46Cubs and Seattle using the designated hitter.
- 1:27:53The pitch. Strike three called over the inside corner. Rosello thought the ball was inside.
- 1:28:01And that's the first strike out for Abbott.
- 1:28:06Now here's the top of the order, DeJesus. Yvonne DeJesus walked in the first inning, scored the first run on Antavarus's double to left.
- 1:28:16Then flied out to left and then singled in the third inning.
- 1:28:25Abbott, still on that mound, he came in when McCormick hurt his arm in the second inning pitching the clients.
- 1:28:34The stretch and the pitch, curve ball, swing and a line drive foul down the left field line.
- 1:28:41Cubs with 13 runs, 15 hits. Everyone in the Cub lineup except Mercer.
- 1:28:48They're taking the hit away from clients giving them a fielder's choice so we only have 14 hits.
- 1:28:55In this inning? Yeah.
- 1:28:59Here's the pitch. Inside, ball one.
- 1:29:05That's a very tough one to take it away from them because had there been no runner on third, I doubted whether Bernhard would have been able to throw them out.
- 1:29:14He made a great play even to catch the ball.
- 1:29:17Swing a foul out of the glove of the catcher Jetsy.
- 1:29:26Cubs with one run in the first, four in the second, six in the third, already two in the fourth.
- 1:29:33And runners on first and third with one out.
- 1:29:38DeJesus, the bat, levels the bat over the plate.
- 1:29:42Big tall right-hander Abbott gets his sign for Jetsy.
- 1:29:49The stretch. Here's the pitch. Strike call over the outside corner.
- 1:29:55So now, after Bittner doubled, Wallace singled, Klienz was safe on that fielder's choice.
- 1:30:02Mittelwald singled. Abbott has struck out Rosello and DeJesus.
- 1:30:09Now here's Antavarice. Two doubles to the opposite field and then singled sharply to right.
- 1:30:15Adding left-handed against Abbott. The pitch led up high.
- 1:30:21Well he's hit two fastballs on the outside of the plate to left field.
- 1:30:26Hit a curveball in the right field so Jetsy decided to throw him a lead up but it was high, ball one.
- 1:30:32The pitch. There's a strike, a fastball over the outside corner.
- 1:30:36Two outs now here in the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:30:44Klienz is on second base. Mittelwald is on first.
- 1:30:47The one-and-one pitch on its way. Curveball, tap foul against the screen in front of the comes dug out.
- 1:30:54Montague, John Montague warming up now in the Seattle bullpen.
- 1:31:03Montague with Oklahoma City, 114 and lost six. So he'll probably see action in the next inning.
- 1:31:12Antavarice. Levels of battle with the play.
- 1:31:16The pitch. Takes the pitch into the dirt. Blocked by Jetsy and it's now ball one, strike two.
- 1:31:28Antavarice with four RBIs hitting in the second spot.
- 1:31:36Steps it back into the batter's box. Levels of battle with the play.
- 1:31:43Abbott into the stretch, looks back at Klienz at second.
- 1:31:47The pitch is low inside. Three and one. Two outs in the inning.
- 1:31:58The runner is off. Here's the pitch. Low. Ball four. The bases are loaded for Gross.
- 1:32:05That's the second walk issued by Abbott.
- 1:32:08Now Gross, who has one for three with one RBI, steps in the batter's box.
- 1:32:18In today's lineup, Herman Franks has sent five left-headed hitters in a row here against Abbott.
- 1:32:30There's the first pitch of strike. Jesus, Antavarice is a switch hitter.
- 1:32:34Here's one for Gross, Mercer, Bittner, Wallace.
- 1:32:39Bases loaded, two outs. The pitch by Abbott, low. One and one to count.
- 1:32:48Cubs lead 13 to one. We're in the fourth inning.
- 1:32:55Gross swings on that curveball, hits it to the left field. It's a base hit in front of Smith.
- 1:32:59One run will score. Here comes Bittner to score the second run on Gross' single to left field.
- 1:33:05So he has three RBIs now, and the score now becomes 15 to one.
- 1:33:12That is the Cubs' 15th hit, and it's 15 to one in favor of the Cubs.
- 1:33:24Now here's Mercer, and once again, here in the fourth, as the Cubs did in the third, they have batted around.
- 1:33:32Mercer is the ninth man to bat in the inning. First pitch is a strike call.
- 1:33:45Antavarice at second, Gross at first. The pitch to Mercer. He swings and lines the base hit into right field.
- 1:33:51Antavarice rounds third. He will score. Gross will go to third.
- 1:33:56So Mercer joins the hit parade with his first hit of the day and his first RBI in a Cub uniform.
- 1:34:06And it's now 16 to one. And here's Bittner, who started the inning, and out of the dugout comes West Dock.
- 1:34:15So it looks like we might have a change here. As he reaches the mound, he points to the bullpen, and John Montague will come in and relief.
- 1:34:25So while we have this delay, let's pause for this action and message.
- 1:34:30What makes Holloman's Old Style unique among beers and gives it that great light flavor? Well, our unique brewing process has a lot to do with it.
- 1:34:45We start with crystal clear water. Only sparkling to a spring water is good enough for Old Style.
- 1:34:52Water that flows cold and clear from deep beneath the ground, some folks say all the way from Canada.
- 1:35:00We use this water in a traditional old world, pure brewing, double brewing process called poisoning.
- 1:35:07Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive. And it's what gives Old Style its great light flavor.
- 1:35:16Try Old Style to a brood in God's country.
- 1:35:26G Holloman Brewing Company across Wisconsin.
- 1:35:33This is Montague's third game.
- 1:35:38There's been a lot of base hits around this ballpark. A lot of ballplayers and an engineer, two announcers.
- 1:35:48Montague has pitched six innings. He's only allowed three hits. He's had quite a few.
- 1:35:53He's a right-hander, as we mentioned earlier. Last year he was with Oklahoma City where he won 14 and lost six.
- 1:36:04He struck out 120 men while only walking 51.
- 1:36:10So he will face Bittner here who let off the inning about a half hour ago with a double.
- 1:36:20So now let's see what Bittner will do against Montague.
- 1:36:24The first pitch, fastball first strike. Cubs have Gross on third and Mercer on first.
- 1:36:35Five runs have scored here in the fourth inning. The Cubs now lead 16 to 1.
- 1:36:45Bittner has two for three thus far.
- 1:36:49And is the only hitter without an RBI. Here's a swing and a pop foul out of play.
- 1:37:02Two strikes to Bittner as Montague looks in and gets his sign.
- 1:37:10The pitch on its way. Swing and a line drive and it's foul down the right field line.
- 1:37:15Bittner really got out in front of that one and fouled it down the right field line.
- 1:37:23Mariners managed by Darrell Johnson who earlier on the leadoff man show just didn't know what his ball club would do.
- 1:37:33They've had a great spring thus far winning five and losing four.
- 1:37:38Here's a swing and a foul of the screen. Remains two strikes.
- 1:37:42They've scored quite a few runs but the main thing and he says is a plus is his speed.
- 1:37:49He has a lot of speed on his ball club. He's doubtful of what his pitching can do in the major leagues.
- 1:37:55Inside one and two on Bittner. Cubs with runners on first and third.
- 1:38:06Five runs in. The pitch inside to and to the count now to Bittner.
- 1:38:12Bittner started this inning. The Cubs have batted around. He's the tenth man to hit.
- 1:38:20Bittner playing of course at first base in place of the injured Buckner.
- 1:38:25The pitch. Swing and a ground ball to second baseman and Sexton has it.
- 1:38:29Straightens up, throws the first three outs.
- 1:38:32But in the fourth inning the Cubs come up with five runs.
- 1:38:38Five hits. Two men. One air in the inning and two men left on the bases.
- 1:38:45So now with the Seattle Mariners coming to bat in the fourth inning it's Cubs 16, Seattle 1.
- 1:38:52I'm trooper Al Haypeck of the Illinois State Police.
- 1:38:55One of the most frequent violations on the highway that causes collisions is following too close.
- 1:39:00That is the driver who fails to consider the speed of the traffic and the conditions of the highway.
- 1:39:04And not allowing enough space to stop safely if necessary without colliding with the vehicle in front.
- 1:39:10A basic rule to follow is allow one vehicle length for every 10 miles per hour between you and your fellow traveler.
- 1:39:16The most used excuse is if I do people keep getting in front of me, putting me further and further behind.
- 1:39:21That's probably right. But if the other guy shows no courtesy it does not mean you should lose your cool.
- 1:39:27Drop back, remain alert, judge the condition of the pavement you're driving on.
- 1:39:31Remember if the highway is wet you will need a greater distance between you and the guy in front before you can stop safely without a collision.
- 1:39:38Wet brakes and tailwind velocity during fast speed driving can make the difference in your stopping on time.
- 1:39:45Safe driving could save a life. Yours.
- 1:39:50Kruko on the mound here at Tempe Stadium comes against the expansion club, the Seattle Mariners.
- 1:39:58Kruko should be relaxed somewhat. But as the youngster trying to make this major league roster as one of the starting pitchers, he'll be bearing down, working hard.
- 1:40:10He's allowed one run, two hits. And here's Stanton who tripled off Kruko in the second inning.
- 1:40:17First pitch inside fastball, ball one.
- 1:40:20Lee Stanton tripled in the second inning, scored as Dan Meyer, who's in the on deck circle, doubled.
- 1:40:27Those were the only hits thus far off Kruko. There's a let up for a strike. Very fine pitch.
- 1:40:34Comes with one in the first, four in the second, six in the third, five in the fourth. What will it be in the fifth?
- 1:40:44Kruko ready. Into the windup, the pitch. Fastball tap foul. Right at the plate. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:40:58Kruko has walked one man. He has struck out two. Cubs play Lee Stanton straight away.
- 1:41:07The pitch from Kruko. Curveball for a strike, a beauty. That's the pitch that Kruko has been working on and did not have last year.
- 1:41:15There was no doubt that he had a major league fastball. But he had to have another pitch to go with that fastball.
- 1:41:21And he's developed a curveball with fine control, as proven on that pitch, as it fooled Stanton.
- 1:41:28That's the third strikeout for Kruko. And now with one out, here's Dan Meyer. Left hander hit a let up.
- 1:41:35High, ball one. Meyer doubled in the second inning.
- 1:41:45There's a fastball inside and it's ball two.
- 1:41:50Cubs will take on this expansion club tomorrow in Scottsdale.
- 1:41:56Swing and a line drive into left center. Wallace moves quickly over, gloves it onto one hop, gets it in.
- 1:42:02As Meyer lined that ball to left center for a single.
- 1:42:07That's the third hit of Kruko, but played very nicely by Wallace to only hold it to a single.
- 1:42:17Now here's Joe Liss. And this is the fellow that Johnson and the Mariners are depending upon for some power from the left side of the plate.
- 1:42:29As we look at it, he's a right handed hitter.
- 1:42:34The pitch outside, the ball one. Meyer on first, one out.
- 1:42:41Bittner playing behind the runner with a huge lead that the Cubs enjoy right now. 16 to one.
- 1:42:48The pitch, there's a let up low.
- 1:42:50As Midderwall is just using this game right now as a so-called practice session for Kruko as he's using all types of pitches.
- 1:43:01The pitch, a swing and a foul down the left field line past Busby, third base coach.
- 1:43:07And now the count is two and one.
- 1:43:13Liss, designated hitter in the lineup. As Kruko is ready, he sets pitches. A curve ball and a swing and a miss.
- 1:43:22Joe Liss was going for the distance on that one, but he missed.
- 1:43:29Hontavarous at third, DeJesus at short, Rosello at second, Bittner at first.
- 1:43:35The pitch, a swing and there's a long foul fly ball down the left field line.
- 1:43:42In left field is Gene Clines in place of the injured Cardinal. Wallace is in center field.
- 1:43:50As Franks, the skipper of the Cubs, giving Morales a rest.
- 1:43:55And we have Gross in right as Mercer is the designated hitter today.
- 1:44:01The pitch inside, packed away from the plate.
- 1:44:07Full count now on Joe Liss.
- 1:44:13Meyer at first takes his lead. Kruko checks him. Here's the pitch.
- 1:44:20He went around and didn't hold back. He's called out on strikes.
- 1:44:26Joe, I don't believe it, but that's his call behind the plate, Barnett.
- 1:44:31And he called it for a strikeout. Four strikeouts now for Kruko.
- 1:44:35Two outs and now here's Bavacqua, the young shortstop.
- 1:44:43The Mariners drafted Grant Jackson, the veteran left-handed pitcher,
- 1:44:49and then traded him to Pittsburgh for two infielders, Sexton, who's playing today,
- 1:44:55and a boy by the name of Reynolds.
- 1:45:00Craig Reynolds played at Charleston and hit 290 last year with 47 RBIs,
- 1:45:08but they say he's quite a glove man, and Johnson likes him tremendously at that shortstop position.
- 1:45:17Here's Bavacqua, and the first pitch is a lead-up into the dirt taken by Middowall, ball one.
- 1:45:24Cubs lead 16-1. Now time has called as Middowall trots out to his pitcher
- 1:45:31and gives him some instructions as to what he's doing wrong, if he's doing anything wrong, without let-up.
- 1:45:37And talking to young Kruko, of course, just telling him what he's trying to do behind the plate
- 1:45:42and calling for particular type of pitches with a 16-1 lead.
- 1:45:48This, perhaps, will, Kruko may go five innings today.
- 1:45:54He's had an easy game thus far. Here's a fastball, swing and a miss by Bavacqua.
- 1:46:03One-on-one, the count.
- 1:46:08And Meyer with the lead at first. Here's the pitch. There's another let-up, but it's inside.
- 1:46:13And it's ball two, strike one. Two outs here in the fourth inning.
- 1:46:21Kruko looks over his left shoulder at Meyer at first, bitten her behind him.
- 1:46:27The pitch, fastball, swing and a five-ball deep to center field. That's well tagged.
- 1:46:31Wallace going back near the wall. It's against the wall, right next to the 425-foot marker.
- 1:46:36There goes Bavacqua to third, and the relay gets past the shortstop and second baseman.
- 1:46:43And Kurt Bavacqua, really tag-one, hit one against the wall, right at the 425-foot marker
- 1:46:51that scores Meyer from first base, and it's a triple for Bavacqua.
- 1:47:01Well now, at 16-2, had Jim Sexton, the hitter.
- 1:47:10Bavacqua, this spring, has hit in 500. He has one for two right here, even though he's only been to bat eight times.
- 1:47:22He has four for eight. Two RBI. First pitch to Sexton is a curveball for a strike.
- 1:47:31Two hits in the innings for Seattle. Two strikeouts for Kruko.
- 1:47:38Now he's ready. He takes his windup. The pitch to Sexton. Fastball swing, a one-half, a right to Rosello.
- 1:47:44At second he has it, throws the first three outs. Ball was hit well, the right to Rosello.
- 1:47:49In the fourth inning for Seattle, one run, two hits, one man left on base.
- 1:47:54At the end of four, it's Cubs 16, Seattle 2.
- 1:48:00Fans, when you think about it, signs are important to the ebb and flow of any baseball game.
- 1:48:04There's a sign for hit and run, signs to steal, but no lot more to remember.
- 1:48:08Now when it comes to the ebb and flow of beer drinking, there's only one sign that you have to remember,
- 1:48:14and that's the sign on bottles or cans of Heimann's Old Style.
- 1:48:18What gives this beer its great light flavor?
- 1:48:21Well, Old Style is brewed in God's country where the skies are clear, the air is clean and crisp,
- 1:48:27and the sparkling beer of Wisconsin spring water flows from deep beneath the ground.
- 1:48:31Some folks say all the way from Canada.
- 1:48:34With water like this, when you brew a beer once, you've got a good beer.
- 1:48:38But when you brew a beer twice, you've got a great light beer.
- 1:48:42This double-brewing, pure-brewing process is called poisoning,
- 1:48:45and Heimann's Old Style is what American premium beer that is still fully-christened,
- 1:48:50naturally carbonated in the old world way.
- 1:48:53Old Style, beer brewed in God's country.
- 1:49:03Well, the Cubs batting around in the third and fourth inning,
- 1:49:06in the third putting six runs on the board, and in the fourth putting five,
- 1:49:11put this one away, it's 16 to 2 now, and we're moving along to the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:49:20The Cubs will send Wallace, Klein, and Mitterwald to the plate.
- 1:49:25No action in the Cubs bullpen, so Kuko will go on for another inning.
- 1:49:32Well, we see young Bill Wrigley here, Bob Kennedy sitting behind the screen,
- 1:49:37Joe Brown, formerly General Manager of the Pirates, is here,
- 1:49:42and several scouts are taking this one in.
- 1:49:46First pitch to Wallace inside, ball one.
- 1:49:49The next pitch is a strike call.
- 1:49:56One-and-one to count now on Joe. He has one for one. He's walked twice.
- 1:50:01The pitch is inside, ball two.
- 1:50:08John Montague at the plate.
- 1:50:13Here's the pitch, swinging a miss on a good let-up.
- 1:50:19Count down, ball one, strike two to Joe.
- 1:50:25Montague in to wind up the pitch, swinging a ground ball,
- 1:50:27second baseman's left. It's through in the right field as Sexton did not move too quickly to his left,
- 1:50:33and that ball did come up at the last minute for him,
- 1:50:37but it just skidded under his glove for a base hit.
- 1:50:42So Wallace has two for two, and that's the first hit off Montague
- 1:50:50and the 17th for the Cubs today.
- 1:50:54Now here's Kline's at bat, one for three, one RBI.
- 1:51:00The pitch, fastball outside, and once again, Jetsy has to jump out to the right to glove the baseball.
- 1:51:08Ball one.
- 1:51:11Meyer holding Wallace on at first.
- 1:51:14Here's a swing and another base hit to right field. Wallace, round second base.
- 1:51:18He's got to go to third. Here is Stanton's throw to third, cut off by the shortstop,
- 1:51:23so Wallace slides in the third safely.
- 1:51:25Kline's just barely reached out and poked that one to right field, sending Wallace to third.
- 1:51:31Eighteen hits for the Cubs here in this ball game,
- 1:51:36and now here is Minterwald who has three for three to RBI.
- 1:51:44Sixteen to two, Cubs fifth inning.
- 1:51:48Cubs have their hitting clothes on today, using the right bats also,
- 1:51:53and finding the spots, the empty spots in that outfield.
- 1:51:58First pitch, the Minterwald is a fastball for a strike as he was backing away from that pitch.
- 1:52:04Strike one.
- 1:52:06Cubs with runners on first and third, nobody out.
- 1:52:10The stretch, the pitch by Montague, a swing and a tap foul.
- 1:52:14Now we see Kelleher warming up with Putman down the right field line.
- 1:52:23Adams hollers down there for another youngster to start warming up.
- 1:52:29Pitch into the dirt box by Jetski, and the count now is ball two, strike one.
- 1:52:41Montague, the third Seattle pitcher on the mound.
- 1:52:49Looks in, gets a sign, checks the runners.
- 1:52:51Wallace is at third.
- 1:52:52Kline is at first.
- 1:52:53Here's the pitch, swing and a miss.
- 1:52:56And Minterwald strikes out on a high inside fastball.
- 1:53:00That is the first strikeout for Montague.
- 1:53:03Now here is Davie Rosello at bat.
- 1:53:18Rosello has two for three, one RBI today.
- 1:53:24The stretch by Montague, the pitch, swing and a line drive to left field.
- 1:53:28Smith is there, Wallace tagging up.
- 1:53:30Here Smith, so it goes to third base and Wallace scores standing up.
- 1:53:35So the Cubs score their 17th run of this ball game, and that is the first off of Montague.
- 1:53:43And Rosello lined that ball very sharply to Smith in left field.
- 1:53:48So Rosello gets another RBI, his second of the day.
- 1:53:53Here's the shortstop, DeJesus.
- 1:53:56He has one for three, two RBIs.
- 1:54:02Kline's remained at first base.
- 1:54:04First pitch, lead up low, blocked by Jutzi, ball one.
- 1:54:17Kline takes the lead at first base.
- 1:54:22As Montague went into the stretch, the pitch strike call, a fastball over the outside corner.
- 1:54:30One run in, Cubs now enjoying a 17 to two lead.
- 1:54:38There's a swinging, no, he holds back in time.
- 1:54:41DeJesus almost was biting after that curve ball and worked outside, but he held back just in time.
- 1:54:48Ball two, strike one now on the count, two outs, fifth inning.
- 1:54:54The stretch and the pitch, there's a strike call over the outside corner, just nipping the corner, and it's two and two.
- 1:55:05Meyer holding Kline's on it at first as Montague gets his sign.
- 1:55:10The pitch, swing and a ground ball right back to the pitcher.
- 1:55:13Turns, throws to first, and DeJesus closes out the fifth inning with only one run scoring, two hits, one man left on base.
- 1:55:22Now with the Seattle Marriors coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning, it's Cubs 17, Seattle 2.
- 1:55:32We have several changes in the Cubs lineup, a new second base shortstop combination.
- 1:55:39We have Thompson, young Thompson at first base.
- 1:55:45Kline's has moved in from left field to third base.
- 1:55:50Pittner's, no, Gross is in right.
- 1:55:55Here's the pitch by Kruko.
- 1:55:58To Jepsey, we have a new left fielder and a new shortstop.
- 1:56:07Here's the pitch by Kruko, it's swinging a ground ball base hit in the left field.
- 1:56:15So Jepsey opens up the fifth inning with a base hit.
- 1:56:25That is the fourth hit, fifth hit I should say, of Kruko.
- 1:56:33Jim Dwyer is in left field.
- 1:56:36The pitch is swinging a miss by number 44 Delgado, the hitter.
- 1:56:46Right-handed here, closed stance.
- 1:56:51Kruko into the stretch, here's the pitch, it's low, it gets away from Putman, the catcher,
- 1:56:55and Jepsey will advance to second base.
- 1:56:59That will be a pass ball as the Cubs making quite a few changes here.
- 1:57:05Dwyer in left, Sember is at short, Kelleher at second, and Kline's has moved in from left field to third base.
- 1:57:18Thompson is the new first baseman.
- 1:57:23The pitch, curve ball for a strike call to Beauty.
- 1:57:29This will be Kruko's last inning of work.
- 1:57:32And he's done a fine job thus far allowing only two runs and five hits.
- 1:57:39Here's the stretch, the pitch, curve ball, swing and a miss.
- 1:57:44And that is the fifth strikeout for Kruko.
- 1:57:48And here's Tommy Smith, the left fielder, stepping into the battle.
- 1:57:54One out, Jepsey at second base.
- 1:57:59Cubs lead 17-2 if you've just joined us.
- 1:58:03Scoring one in the first, four in the second, six in the third, five in the fourth, and one in the fifth.
- 1:58:10First pitch to Smith, swing and a foul right into the glove of Putman.
- 1:58:17Strike one.
- 1:58:25Smith, left-handed hitter, 0 for 2 thus far.
- 1:58:29Kruko into the stretch, checks the runner at second.
- 1:58:32Here's the pitch out, it's way a fastball inside.
- 1:58:43Looks like Joe Decker warming up in the Cubs' bullpen.
- 1:58:50Here's the pitch, curve ball low.
- 1:58:57Smith is batting here with one out in the fifth inning.
- 1:59:00Jepsey at second base, it's ball two, strike one to Tommy Smith.
- 1:59:06Joe Decker will be the next Cub pitcher.
- 1:59:10Kruko looks in, shakes his head yes on the sign.
- 1:59:15And now here's the pitch, a let-up, a swing and a ground ball
- 1:59:18past the second baseman into right field for a base hit.
- 1:59:21Jepsey will score, and Smith drives in his first RBI of this game.
- 1:59:30And it's now 17 to 3.
- 1:59:37That is the sixth hit of Kruko.
- 1:59:42Here's Bernhard, young third baseman for Seattle, he's 0 for 2.
- 1:59:49He takes the first pitch curve ball, strike called.
- 1:59:52Kruko has been getting the curve ball over today.
- 1:59:58And with that curve ball, if he continues to improve and develop,
- 2:00:01he could be the surprise of the Cubs' spring training camp.
- 2:00:07Fastball for a strike over the outside corner.
- 2:00:110-2 now to Cow.
- 2:00:17Cubs with Kline's at third.
- 2:00:22Moving in from left field.
- 2:00:24There's a pitch that gets far outside away from Putman,
- 2:00:27the wild pitch, Thins and Smith to second base.
- 2:00:38Kruko, of course, at this stage of the game might be getting tired.
- 2:00:43This is the father that he has gone thus far.
- 2:00:50Here's the pitch on its way now to Bernhard.
- 2:00:53Curve ball, tap foul.
- 2:00:55One ball, two strikes now.
- 2:01:08Smith with a lead at second base.
- 2:01:11Kruko sets the pitch.
- 2:01:13High fastball.
- 2:01:17Bernhard will be followed by Lee Stanton.
- 2:01:20And then Dan Meyer.
- 2:01:22We're in the fifth inning, one out, one run in for Seattle.
- 2:01:26Cubs lead 17-2.
- 2:01:32The pitch inside.
- 2:01:35Full count now as Kruko shows a little tiredness on the mound.
- 2:01:40But with this lead, of course, Herman Franks, Marnie Schultz,
- 2:01:47will hopefully say that he has done a great job.
- 2:01:52Here's a curve ball, a swing, a foul ball on left field,
- 2:01:54wires coming in, he gloves it for the out.
- 2:01:58Two outs here in the fifth inning.
- 2:02:00And now Lee Stanton will bat.
- 2:02:02Stanton tripled to open up the second inning,
- 2:02:05scored the first Seattle run.
- 2:02:07Then he was called out on strikes in the fourth.
- 2:02:16Tommy Smith is still on second base now.
- 2:02:23Of the six hits given up by Kruko,
- 2:02:26there has been two triples and one double.
- 2:02:33Now the right-handed hitter Stanton into the batter's box.
- 2:02:37First pitch by Kruko.
- 2:02:42Instead he steps back off of the mound.
- 2:02:48The pitch inside, ball one.
- 2:02:59Stanton, the right-handed hitter, good power, and he'll hit to all fields.
- 2:03:04He checks his swing, the ball hits the batter,
- 2:03:06it's a little pop-up drop on the shortstop.
- 2:03:08The client picks it up, throws very poorly at first base, it goes against the wall.
- 2:03:12The runner will score, there could be two errors on that play.
- 2:03:18Sember came in to glove the ball on the fly,
- 2:03:23and he dropped it as it hit the tip of the glove.
- 2:03:27And as it went beyond the shortstop, the client picked it up and fired to first base.
- 2:03:34There on the shortstop, but the man on first, Stanton, did not advance to second,
- 2:03:40as the ball rebounded right back to Thompson, so there'll only be one error on the play.
- 2:03:45But the run scores 17-4 now.
- 2:03:49It comes in the lead.
- 2:03:50Here's a swing and a pop foul back to the plate by Meyer.
- 2:03:59Meyer has two for two, left-handed hitter with one RBI.
- 2:04:09The stretch by Kruko, here's the pitch, a fastball inside, just missing one and one to count.
- 2:04:17The score, Cubs 17, Seattle 4.
- 2:04:25The pitch on its way, curveball, a swing, a line drive to center field.
- 2:04:28In comes Wallace. He gloves it.
- 2:04:30Knee high for the out end on the run.
- 2:04:33In the fifth inning for Seattle, two runs, two hits, one error, one man left on base.
- 2:04:39At the end of five, Cubs 17, Seattle 4-2-0.
- 2:04:46Let's fly the mooboo draw from Tempe, Arizona.
- 2:04:50And this is one of those that has some of the fans out here almost lulled asleep.
- 2:04:55Bright sunshine and a lopsided score.
- 2:04:58There have been a lot of lopsided scores out here in many of the spring training games,
- 2:05:02not only those involving the Cubs, but a lot of the teams out here.
- 2:05:06And they may have wind up setting a record for total runs scored out here in the games this year
- 2:05:10before it's all over with.
- 2:05:12Of course, that won't be for the Cubbies until the 5th of April.
- 2:05:15That'll be a game we'll be broadcasting to you.
- 2:05:22Jimmy Dwyer came in to play left field in the fifth inning.
- 2:05:27He's now coming to bat for the first time today.
- 2:05:31Left-handed batter.
- 2:05:33John Montague in the mob, the third Seattle pitcher of the afternoon.
- 2:05:36Wines delivers. Dwyer takes a strike.
- 2:05:38Fastball right at the knees to it.
- 2:05:42They're out of the air tomorrow afternoon, of course.
- 2:05:45A regular time on most of our broadcasts out here.
- 2:05:50Curball swung out of his.
- 2:05:53Dwyer finds himself in the hole. Strike two count.
- 2:05:57And prior to our broadcast tomorrow, Mike Pyle is going to have
- 2:06:02Jack Maron from the Chicago Bulls on as his guest on Sports Sunday.
- 2:06:11Dwyer, three for nine, does brain swings and a little looper over the shortstop's head,
- 2:06:15but it's out to Tommy Smith, the left fielder, who hauls it in easily.
- 2:06:18And there's one gone in the sixth inning.
- 2:06:21Cubs have scored in each of the first five this afternoon.
- 2:06:26Greg Gross has got a couple of hits in four at bats, and has batted in three runs today.
- 2:06:31Steps into the batter's box.
- 2:06:34Playing in right field.
- 2:06:42Montague, a big right-hander.
- 2:06:44Some years with Montreal. Fastball in for a strike call.
- 2:06:50For opening day when the Cubs take on the Mets at Wrigley Field,
- 2:06:55stop by the ticket office to be sure you've got good tickets.
- 2:06:57A curve swung out of one hopper, back to Montague.
- 2:06:59The pitcher has it. Turns, throws. Two gone.
- 2:07:04Bobby Mercer, who failed to get a base hit his first three times up today as a designated hitter,
- 2:07:11finally singled and drove in his first run of spring training in the fourth.
- 2:07:15He's won for four today.
- 2:07:18Five for 16 for the spring.
- 2:07:22Wrigley Field box office will be open Monday through Friday from 9 o'clock in the morning until 5 in the afternoon.
- 2:07:28Fastball. Bobby takes it inside.
- 2:07:31Saturdays, they'll be open from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon.
- 2:07:38Stop by and get your good tickets. Wind up the pitch.
- 2:07:42Breaks a little too low. All one, strike two.
- 2:07:48Two gone and the bases are empty.
- 2:07:53It's a joy to see Michigan knocked out in that NCAA basketball tournament.
- 2:08:00Fastball. It's too low.
- 2:08:05It's been a wide open affair this year.
- 2:08:11Wind up the pitch. He swings it a ground ball to the second baseman.
- 2:08:14Sexton has it. Up with the peg over to the first baseman, Danny Meyer, and what do you know?
- 2:08:18The Cubs go down in order. And it's the first time today that's happened.
- 2:08:22It's also the first time they have not been able to score.
- 2:08:26So we move swiftly along to the bottom of inning number six with Seattle coming to bat.
- 2:08:31And the score, the Cubs, 17-Seattle-4.
- 2:08:35Train mechanics touchin' Otto. Before that, they put it through their sophisticated data processing machine,
- 2:08:40and out comes all the information on the previous repairs.
- 2:08:42Well, now that you've whet everyone's appetite, you better give them the address.
- 2:08:46Yeah, let's see. Fireside Chrysler Plymouth. They're out out there on Golf Road,
- 2:08:50just west of that fabulous Woodfield Shopping Center in Schaumburg.
- 2:08:54And there's no doubt about it, fans. From sale to service, Fireside really takes care of its customers.
- 2:09:00The way this one is going, the Cubs are going to have to keep Bill Wrigley out here.
- 2:09:05That's a good look, Ullman.
- 2:09:08I think this is the first game that he's seen the Cubbies play out in Arizona this spring.
- 2:09:13Probably can't believe his eyes. 17-4.
- 2:09:17Joe Decker, at the beginning of last year, was with the Minnesota Twins,
- 2:09:23and then he wound up pitching to the Miners at Evansville, I believe it was,
- 2:09:29and that's where Bob Kennedy, who is now, of course, the Cub's general manager, saw Decker pitch.
- 2:09:37And with the obvious shortage of good pitching talent in the ball club this year,
- 2:09:43Kennedy invited Decker to training camp out here to see whether or not he can make it.
- 2:09:51He'll be facing the right-hander, Joe List, the designated hitter.
- 2:09:54So far today, he has hit one solidly in the nose, but it was a liner to the left fielder.
- 2:09:58At that time, it was Klien.
- 2:10:00Then in the fourth inning, he struck out.
- 2:10:02So Mike Kruko worked five good innings today.
- 2:10:06Gave up a half a dozen hits. Four runs, struck out four, walked one.
- 2:10:11One run coming in an air. First pitch by Decker, and the right-hander gets a strike.
- 2:10:20Broadcast tomorrow, Rick Ruschel is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Cubs.
- 2:10:24Wind up in Decker's pitch. List takes a strike on the outside corner.
- 2:10:31So he's jumped out in front.
- 2:10:34This is Joe's third appearance for the Cubs on the hill this spring.
- 2:10:37He has won one and lost one.
- 2:10:40Winds, delivers, strike, three called.
- 2:10:44Pitch is dropped by the catcher, Plutman. He picks it up, steps well out in front of the plate,
- 2:10:47throws down to the first baseman, Scott Thompson, for the out.
- 2:10:52To go less, a strikeout victim.
- 2:10:55And with one gone, Kirk Bavacqua will be the hitter.
- 2:11:00Crippled in the fourth inning after grounding out for a shortstop his first time up.
- 2:11:06Right-handed batter. Boy, there have been some wild scores.
- 2:11:11Not only involving the Cubs.
- 2:11:14Joe Decker's fastball misses low and outside to the right-handed hitter.
- 2:11:21Beautiful, sunshiny day once more here in Arizona.
- 2:11:27They've had four tenths of an inch of rain since the 1st of January.
- 2:11:36Wanted to butt that ball, but he missed.
- 2:11:39Ball one, strike one.
- 2:11:41Gene Clines is now over at the third base. Mike Sember, a rookie, is at short.
- 2:11:46Nick Kelleher is at second base. Scott Thompson, a rookie at first. Ed Plutman doing the catching now.
- 2:11:52Jimmy Dwyer out in left field. Joe Wallace in center. Greg Gross in right.
- 2:11:56And Decker's pitch. Swung out, pulls the ground ball to the shortstop, off his chest.
- 2:12:00Goes over to his left side, and Mike Sember cannot make the play on that one,
- 2:12:04so Bavacqua is going to be on what should be an error.
- 2:12:10He had a little trouble catching a pop-up in the fifth inning.
- 2:12:13As a matter of fact, he dropped it.
- 2:12:17Here's Jimmy Sexton, who was in the minors last year.
- 2:12:20He's old for two today and has not showed much of a bat for Seattle so far this spring with two hits in 13 trips.
- 2:12:29Runner at first. Decker misses. Ball one.
- 2:12:37Decker's looked pretty good so far this spring. Boy, how he'd like to make a comeback.
- 2:12:43Used to be with the Cubs, you will recall.
- 2:12:48As he's signed, here's a stretch. They're not holding the run around.
- 2:12:50There's a swing and a bouncing foul. Skips into the dugout of Seattle over behind third base.
- 2:12:58And the count on Jimmy Sexton, the right-handed hitter. Ball one, strike one.
- 2:13:07You going to wear that bonnet on ladies' bonnet day?
- 2:13:09Yes, sir. With another about 10,000 young ladies and elderly women wearing them.
- 2:13:17They're great. Playing in a foul. Back out of play. They are similar to what you're wearing.
- 2:13:21Good luck. They're good luck bonnets.
- 2:13:24That gals could even sit on them.
- 2:13:35Seventeen to four. Oh, this should happen so often during the season, huh?
- 2:13:43And a one-two-fit swung-out. High fly ball coming over forward to Jimmy Dwyer near the foul line.
- 2:13:47It drops in front of him. Bounces over his love. He picks it up.
- 2:13:49Here's the runner going from first to third.
- 2:13:52And lifting into second base is Jimmy Sexton.
- 2:13:57They give him a double. There they have runners at second and third with one away.
- 2:14:02Mr. Danny Kaye, your ball club is coming back.
- 2:14:05Hello, Danny.
- 2:14:14We are lifting ourselves from the ground and we will go down to glorious defeat.
- 2:14:21Talk about being thrilled to be in the major leagues as one of the principal owners of this ball club.
- 2:14:28I've heard so much about his cooking but never get invited over to his apartment or place.
- 2:14:33He doesn't really cook it. He goes out there to Guadalajara.
- 2:14:36Let's talk a little about cooking.
- 2:14:40He goes out to Guadalajara. He picks up their Mexican food and then he takes it back and he says he did it.
- 2:14:45Not Danny. Bye Danny. Glad to see you. Good luck to you. Be all right. Be all right. That's right.
- 2:14:52Oh, did you? Fine. Hope you include the World Series.
- 2:14:55Got the World Series rings already?
- 2:14:57Or the only day ring.
- 2:15:01He's ordered the ring.
- 2:15:06I would handle it.
- 2:15:07I like their theory of getting as many young kids as they can and building.
- 2:15:13Hey, the swing and a grand ball going to the second baseman.
- 2:15:15Renner's going to score on this one and that makes it a 17 to 5 ball game.
- 2:15:19But they get the out at first base and skip Jesse, slaps an easy grounder to McKellar.
- 2:15:24That brings in Bivakwa who had reached on the air and Sexton goes over to third.
- 2:15:28We have Louis Delgado the hitter.
- 2:15:30I would have to say that before the season is finished in Seattle,
- 2:15:34the Seattle fans will see Danny Kay in uniform and out on that field in one way, shape or another.
- 2:15:41There's no doubt about it that he's going to be on that field.
- 2:15:44Loves it. Oh, he loves it.
- 2:15:50Delgado in the batter's box in the first pitch.
- 2:15:52The right hander is a strike.
- 2:15:56Van Lingo Mungo.
- 2:15:57And then he will be suspended by the commissioner and he will appeal.
- 2:16:02And win. And win. And win.
- 2:16:04A fast ball for a strike. Nothing in two.
- 2:16:11Their branch ticket sales up there in Seattle are going well and their season ticket sales.
- 2:16:16That's the Dome Stadium up in Seattle, Washington.
- 2:16:20They'll probably draw very well this year.
- 2:16:24Decker from the windup of the man in third.
- 2:16:26A swing and a bouncing ball over his head, speared by the shortstop behind second.
- 2:16:29Here's the peg over the first.
- 2:16:31The Cibbers tosses in time to Scott Thompson to retire Seattle in the sixth.
- 2:16:36They pick up a run. It is not earned.
- 2:16:38One hit, one error. And a man left on the bases.
- 2:16:41So at the end of six innings of play, it is still a very comfortable and fast lead for the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:16:4717 to five.
- 2:16:48Chicago.
- 2:16:57Scott Thompson, must be the young man who had trouble signing this year to a minor league contract.
- 2:17:05He had himself an agent, the whole ball of wax.
- 2:17:08But they finally got his name. Very likely he's going to be assigned to Wichita.
- 2:17:12Left-handed hitter, swings. He got under that ball. Hits a very high pop up to the shortstop.
- 2:17:17He's got it.
- 2:17:20Tipped that shoulder about two feet.
- 2:17:22Trying to crank one out.
- 2:17:24With all of the hits today, there has not been a home run.
- 2:17:31He's gone to the seventh inning.
- 2:17:32Clines will be the hitter.
- 2:17:33Now playing over at third base.
- 2:17:36He has a couple of hits today in fourth batch.
- 2:17:38He's batted in a run and scored two.
- 2:17:45Cubs got single runs in the first and fifth inning.
- 2:17:48Got four in the second.
- 2:17:50Six in the third.
- 2:17:51And five in the fourth.
- 2:17:53He reaches out.
- 2:17:54Hits a fly ball to the right fielder.
- 2:17:56Should be easy. Stanton is there. He's got it.
- 2:17:59Well, it's three up and three down.
- 2:18:01Montague is retired.
- 2:18:02The last nine, Cubs at East Base.
- 2:18:05Looks tough.
- 2:18:07Seattle fans will stand for the seventh inning stretch.
- 2:18:09The Cubs fans already have theirs.
- 2:18:11And at the end of six and a half here in Dempsey, Arizona, it's the Cubs 17, Seattle 5.
- 2:18:18You know, Lou, I think Al Gaines travels about as much as we do.
- 2:18:20But with those carbine trips he takes to Detroit every other week,
- 2:18:23Bay Smith has to be the first man up.
- 2:18:26He's the number two man in the batting order.
- 2:18:29It'll be followed by Juan Bernhardt and Lee Stanton.
- 2:18:34Joe Decker finishing his warm-up tosses.
- 2:18:37He came out at the start of the sixth inning.
- 2:18:39Got a strikeout, a couple of ground outs.
- 2:18:41Gave up one hit.
- 2:18:43And the Cubs were guilty of an error behind him.
- 2:18:45And that led to a run, not earned.
- 2:18:47And the Cubs have a fair share of the game.
- 2:18:53Well, let's see what Joseph can do.
- 2:18:57Ami Smith.
- 2:18:59Big guy, 6'3", left-handed hitter.
- 2:19:02Singled and scored in the fifth inning.
- 2:19:04Drove in a run.
- 2:19:05He's one for three for the day.
- 2:19:08I got a couple of hits off Mike Kruegel in the second inning.
- 2:19:11There's a swing and a ground ball.
- 2:19:12Cutter hurt quickly to the first base side.
- 2:19:14And the toss is in plenty of time to retire Ami Smith.
- 2:19:19One gone, nobody on.
- 2:19:20Juan Bernhardt will be the hitter.
- 2:19:22The Cubs got a run in the first on one hit.
- 2:19:25A walk, a stolen base.
- 2:19:26They got four runs in the second on four hits.
- 2:19:28Three runs in the, or six runs in the third on six hits.
- 2:19:32They batted around.
- 2:19:34Five runs on five hits in the fourth.
- 2:19:36And they batted around.
- 2:19:38And the windup in the pitch.
- 2:19:39A curve, broke, but not enough.
- 2:19:41It missed the inside corner.
- 2:19:45Ball, one count on.
- 2:19:47Young man from Puerto Rico, Juan Bernhardt, right-handed hitter.
- 2:19:51Stance squared away.
- 2:19:53Decker kicks.
- 2:19:54Fast ball swung on.
- 2:19:55And a little soft line that's going to drop out in the right center field for a base hit.
- 2:20:01Hit number two off of Gill.
- 2:20:08Eight hits for the day for Seattle and Lee Stanton, a right-hander who tripled leading off the second inning
- 2:20:14and scored on the double by Danny Meyer steps in.
- 2:20:17He is one for three.
- 2:20:19Lee Stanton.
- 2:20:21Spent a little bit of time a few years ago with the Mets.
- 2:20:27Decker in the stretch.
- 2:20:29Fast ball.
- 2:20:30Low and outside, ball one.
- 2:20:33There's still a lot of talk out here as to whether or not the Cubs are going to be making any more deals,
- 2:20:37particularly for help in the pitching department before they get back to Wrigley Field.
- 2:20:44Decker's curve ball swung on and popped up into shallow center field, coming way in forward as Tars Wallace.
- 2:20:50And he loses the ball in the sun.
- 2:20:53So I flipped those glasses down, and that is when I think he lost it.
- 2:20:57Gell-er had started out, but the ball was, he thought, way out of his range.
- 2:21:04Chargson was there, but he lost it in the bright Arizona sunshine.
- 2:21:15The B's have been charged with their fourth error of the day.
- 2:21:20And Stanton has reached twice as a result of them.
- 2:21:23Runners at first and second with one out, left-hander young Danny Meyer into the batter's box.
- 2:21:29Used to be with Detroit.
- 2:21:31Takes the fast ball low and inside for ball one.
- 2:21:35And Ed Putman is doing the catching.
- 2:21:38Herman Franks will repeat, says there's nothing wrong physically with Swisher.
- 2:21:42We hear otherwise, that he's still being bothered with the sore shoulder.
- 2:21:47Runners at first and second here as a stretch in the pitch.
- 2:21:50Low and inside, way off the mark with that one, and he's dropped behind, 2-0.
- 2:21:57Let's see if Joe can successfully pitch from behind.
- 2:22:13One out, runners at first and second, 17-5 score.
- 2:22:16Here's the pitch.
- 2:22:17Took a little off the curve, but he missed it outside.
- 2:22:20So he's got himself a bag of trouble out there, 3-0 the count.
- 2:22:28Let's see if they might give this kid the green light on 3-0 with runners at first and second.
- 2:22:32Although they are, of course, way behind in the ballgame, they need a flock of baserunners.
- 2:22:36He takes, hits a strike.
- 2:22:401144, the paid attendance this afternoon,
- 2:22:45which is about 700 more than these two clubs drew the first time they played here at Tempe.
- 2:22:52Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau here at WDN Radio Chicago.
- 2:22:56Jack Minovitch, our producer.
- 2:22:58Don Michelson, our engineer.
- 2:23:00And we hope you're enjoying it.
- 2:23:02If you're a cup fan, you've got to be happy with the score.
- 2:23:04Here's a swing and a little looper that's going to drop on the left center field.
- 2:23:07It's in there for a base hit.
- 2:23:09Here's a man coming to the plate, and the throw will be too late.
- 2:23:12They have runners at first and second, and it's 17 to 6.
- 2:23:20Danny Meyer rides in his second run of the afternoon with his third hit of the day.
- 2:23:27Runners at first and second.
- 2:23:32Second hit of the inning, and the third off of Joe Decker.
- 2:23:37Well, now let's stop this nonsense and get them out.
- 2:23:41Designated hitter, right-hander, Joe Liss.
- 2:23:440 for 3 today.
- 2:23:46His fan twice.
- 2:23:48Once against Decker.
- 2:23:49He swings and misses.
- 2:23:50Joe came over the top with that one, and it looked down in the way to the right-hander.
- 2:23:55It has shown great power in the minors.
- 2:23:57Had 30 home runs last year for Toledo.
- 2:24:04The stands have closed.
- 2:24:06Seattle runners at first and second.
- 2:24:08They're batting in the seventh inning.
- 2:24:09Decker's pitch low and outside.
- 2:24:12That ball broke away from him, and he wouldn't chase it this time.
- 2:24:16So the count goes to 1-1.
- 2:24:24Mike Pyle with Jack Merritt on Sports Sunday to Mile at 1230 in Chicago and WGM.
- 2:24:29Following our broadcast of the game, he's at Sports Writer's Show.
- 2:24:33Curve.
- 2:24:34Didn't break enough.
- 2:24:35It was high and tight.
- 2:24:37Ball to strike two.
- 2:24:46One gone.
- 2:24:47Seattle runners at first and second in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:24:52Here's a stretch of the pitch.
- 2:24:54Went after it, fouled it back against the backstop, and then it caromed off of that wire fence
- 2:24:58over to the box seats near the cup dugout on the first base side.
- 2:25:04Ball to strike two on Joe Liss.
- 2:25:10Drumming in three runs this spring, but he has only three hits in 11th offense.
- 2:25:14There's a swing at a drive that's fouled on the left field side.
- 2:25:20Pulled the string on him a bit.
- 2:25:21He was still way out in front of it and lined to foul.
- 2:25:28So it's ball to strike two.
- 2:25:33Joe Liss against the right-handed pitcher, Joe Decker.
- 2:25:42Good time for a double play.
- 2:25:47Ed Putnam, the young catcher, gives the side to Decker.
- 2:25:51They take a little bit too much time, and Joe Liss steps out of the batter's box.
- 2:26:00Now we're ready to go.
- 2:26:02And the pitch swung on.
- 2:26:04He lets a high deep fly ball to left field.
- 2:26:06Back goes Jimmy Dwyer.
- 2:26:08Back to the wall.
- 2:26:09It is over the wall of three-run homer.
- 2:26:13Joe Decker came inside.
- 2:26:15And Joe Liss, who hit 30 home runs for Toledo last year, has just hit his first one for the Seattle Mariners
- 2:26:23with two meets to board.
- 2:26:29He's about 380 feet away.
- 2:26:35Enough is enough.
- 2:26:38He did what a designated hitter is supposed to do.
- 2:26:42He's suddenly gone from three runs batted in this spring to six.
- 2:26:50Four runs at the inning.
- 2:26:51It is now 17-9.
- 2:26:53Kappa Bacla swings and fouls it back for strike one.
- 2:27:09Decker winds.
- 2:27:10Curve.
- 2:27:11Strike call.
- 2:27:17He'd count the hitters to figure the totals on this one, and we're only in the seventh.
- 2:27:25Look up at the scoreboard where they wanted to hold up on that swing, and they couldn't do it.
- 2:27:32The ball was breaking sharply away from him, and he fouled it back out of play.
- 2:27:35And the lights on, and the scoreboard who show the scores in the inning and the runs and the hits,
- 2:27:42and with that bright sun flashing on them from our angle,
- 2:27:45sometimes very tough to pick up those numbers.
- 2:27:49Like they had that same trouble over at Mesa when the Cubs were training over there several years ago.
- 2:27:55Here's a swing and a ground ball past the pitcher, but the second baseman Kappa Hur is up with it.
- 2:27:59Long stretch by the first baseman.
- 2:28:01Holes his foot off the bag, and the runner is safe.
- 2:28:04The throw was a little soft and a bit up the line towards home plate.
- 2:28:08Big Scott Thompson, the rookie, tried to glove the ball,
- 2:28:12tried to make the long stretch and keep the foot in the bag, but he just couldn't quite come off with it.
- 2:28:19So there's still only one out, and they have a man at first base.
- 2:28:26It's going to be another error.
- 2:28:30The fifth boot of the day by the Cubs, officially.
- 2:28:34Here's Jimmy Sexton, the eighth man in the batting order.
- 2:28:37If you're going, it was his first few times up, the skid doubled.
- 2:28:41And Decker throws a curve that misses inside for ball one.
- 2:28:45In case he missed it, we announced earlier Jimmy Todd,
- 2:28:49newest acquisition by the Cubs from Oakland this week for Joe Coleman,
- 2:28:53agreed to terms a two-year contract for right-ended relief pitcher Jimmy Todd.
- 2:28:58Decker's pitch, strike called, fastball on the inside corner.
- 2:29:05But the pitching has been very spotty.
- 2:29:11And I think I'm giving the Cubs the best of it when I say it's been spotty.
- 2:29:18There's a swing and a foul that dumps off the catcher Eddie Putnam.
- 2:29:25Ball one, strike two.
- 2:29:29Sexton, three for 14 this spring for Seattle.
- 2:29:35He's playing at second base in this ballgame.
- 2:29:40A boxcar score on the board, 70 to nine.
- 2:29:44Here's a pitch and he looks at his strike and he can't believe it.
- 2:29:46He's really hot.
- 2:29:47And I've got to say from here, that pitch looked like it was way low and way out.
- 2:29:52Yes, it was.
- 2:29:54There's no doubt about it.
- 2:29:55We're right directly behind the plate.
- 2:29:58I think Barnett really missed that one.
- 2:30:01Well, maybe he's getting tired of standing down here all the time.
- 2:30:06Two-gone, skip Jutzi.
- 2:30:08Moustache would right-ended hitting catcher, steps into the batter's box.
- 2:30:12He's locked, double, grounded out so far today, score to run.
- 2:30:16Here's the pitch, strike, a fastball.
- 2:30:23Runners still on at first base, Veda Pinson, former refined outfielder coaching down there,
- 2:30:28and a great outfielder many years in the majors, Jim Busby coaching at third.
- 2:30:34Here's the pitch, swung on, a line drive over Decker's head in the center field.
- 2:30:40And runners at first and second, skip Jutzi, line's a single.
- 2:30:49Well, they keep it going with a score 17 to nine, Q-out.
- 2:30:52It's now the top of the batting order, and this young man, Louis Delgado,
- 2:30:55is still looking for his first hit of the day.
- 2:30:57He's all for four and has fanned twice.
- 2:31:02He started the day with 11 hits and a.458 spring training average.
- 2:31:06They've cut him off so far, looks at a strike at curveball.
- 2:31:12Four hits so far in this inning for Seattle, including Joe Liss's three-run homer.
- 2:31:24Nothing like 30 hits so far in the game.
- 2:31:26He reaches out after that pitch and taps a foul ball back to the third base side of the screen behind the plate.
- 2:31:34We mentioned Rick Ruschel has slated to start tomorrow's ball game,
- 2:31:37and Rick earned run average is six for the season so far with six innings of work, nine hits, four runs.
- 2:31:45We know he can do better than that.
- 2:31:48There's a swing and a high foul out of play with right side.
- 2:31:52Ray Burr has really been hit hard his last two starts after looking just great in the first game of the exhibition season,
- 2:32:02which we broadcast.
- 2:32:03It was perfect since then.
- 2:32:09Decker's stretch and pitch swung on.
- 2:32:10He throws his bat at that lead-up pitch, taps one to the shortstop,
- 2:32:14and it's an easy force play on Jutzi at second base to retire the side.
- 2:32:18But they send seven men to the plate, or nine men to the plate in the seventh inning and come up with four runs on four hits.
- 2:32:28A couple of errors in the inning by the Cubs, two men left on.
- 2:32:31And so at the end of seven, it is the Cubs 17 and Seattle 9.
- 2:32:48Ed Buttman, led most of last year at Wichita, caught, played first base. He's replaced Meadowall behind the plate today.
- 2:33:12He's a rookie kid, a native of Los Angeles. He's always been cup property.
- 2:33:18He takes the first pitch from Montague for a strike.
- 2:33:22Wichita last year, he hit 273.
- 2:33:25Earlier in the season, he was at Midland, hit 293.
- 2:33:29Three for seven and a brief stint with the Cubs.
- 2:33:32Montague's next pitch is a curve that's low and away, ball one, strike one.
- 2:33:39The Cubs selected Buttman in the January free agent draft.
- 2:33:47There's a slow curve for a strike call.
- 2:33:50The recommendation of Gene Hanley, who does his job of scouting on the West Coast for the Cubs.
- 2:33:59Ball one, strike two, 17 to 9 ball game.
- 2:34:03Cubs are leading, fastball low and away.
- 2:34:06Two and two now on the right end of hitting Buttman.
- 2:34:13First trip up the plate this afternoon.
- 2:34:15Meadowall did all right. He was three for four.
- 2:34:20Robe in a couple of runs. There's a swing and a miss. He got him.
- 2:34:25What Montague now has retired.
- 2:34:28Three, six, nine, ten, cup batters in succession.
- 2:34:32He came on a relief. In the fourth inning when the Cubs had ten men come to the plate.
- 2:34:39Mickey Gellerhurst steps into the batter's box.
- 2:34:42His first trip up today.
- 2:34:45Micah Gorse has played some short stops, second, and he can play some third.
- 2:34:50Wand up as the Cubs with a short stop last year.
- 2:34:55He has not carried a magic wand to the plate this spring.
- 2:34:59He has one hit in 13 at bats.
- 2:35:02There's a strike called fast curveball.
- 2:35:10Wind up on Montague, the delivery.
- 2:35:12Fastball misses inside to him.
- 2:35:18In the on deck circle of the young shortstop, Mike Sember will be making his first trip to the plate this afternoon.
- 2:35:23The wind up in Montague's next pitch.
- 2:35:25Gellerhurst, ball a little bit low.
- 2:35:28He's a little bit behind on the hitter.
- 2:35:3217 to 9 score. Cubs out in front.
- 2:35:36About 30 hits so far in the game.
- 2:35:38One of them a homer, a three run shot by Seattle's Joe Liss.
- 2:35:41Fastball strike called on him.
- 2:35:44Caught the outside corner to Larry Barnett.
- 2:35:50Johnny Kebler and Ed Montague from the National League working on the bases along with big colorful Ron Luciano.
- 2:35:56Here's a swing and a ground ball.
- 2:35:58The shortstop is over there and it goes right at his club between his legs to center field.
- 2:36:02That's a whoops.
- 2:36:09Rick Babocla charged with an error.
- 2:36:12And it'll bring up young Mike Sember.
- 2:36:15First time today.
- 2:36:19Mike is one for five so obviously he has not had much work this spring.
- 2:36:23But chances are he's going to wind up with Wichita during the 77 season.
- 2:36:27Right-handed hitter and he looks at his strike.
- 2:36:32This has not been one of those truly great artistic performances by either Bocla today.
- 2:36:38A batch of errors, bigger batch of base hits, and a slow curve outside.
- 2:36:46Mike comes from outside Chicago at Hammond, Indiana.
- 2:36:53Stretch the pitch. Strike right at the knees to him.
- 2:36:58And he has always been the property of the Cubs.
- 2:37:02Graduated from Bishop Noel Institute at Hammond and majored in broadcasting at the University of Tulsa.
- 2:37:08Here's a strike called.
- 2:37:11If he takes too many pitches like that he's going to be in broadcasting in a hurry, faster than he wanted to be.
- 2:37:18The error that permitted Kelleher to reach ended that string of John Monaghan's where he had retired ten in succession.
- 2:37:29That strikeout is the third that he has posted here in relief today.
- 2:37:34Jimmy Dwyer stepping into the batter's box left-hander playing now in left field came into play in the fifth inning and he's flied out to left field his first time up.
- 2:37:44Takes the ball. It's outside and the count on Jimmy Dwyer.
- 2:37:49Paul won those strikes.
- 2:37:51The Chicago native led up on that one. It's a little bit high.
- 2:38:02Dwyer three for nine this spring with two runs batted in.
- 2:38:06Walked three times. He struck out twice in ten at-fats now including today.
- 2:38:13Right-hander, John Montague on the hill. Cup runner at first base. Here's the pitch.
- 2:38:17Dwyer takes a fast ball low and inside.
- 2:38:22Jose Cardenel still suffering from a sore knee and that is the knee that Jose injured late in the 1976 season.
- 2:38:32A little ligament damage. It's a strike call.
- 2:38:35And he may be bothered with that off and on throughout this season.
- 2:38:41Bill Buckner, not sure when he's going to be in action.
- 2:38:44He's been doing a little bit of running the last couple of days.
- 2:38:47Strotter first. Runner is back safely standing.
- 2:38:56One of these days we expect to see a lineup on that field that would resemble the one you expect to see opening day.
- 2:39:01There's a swing and a miss.
- 2:39:04Drilled himself a little hole in the ground, spinning around trying to get a hold of that one.
- 2:39:11And he came up with fresh Arizona air.
- 2:39:16Now the count is full at three and two.
- 2:39:19Two go and the runner will go.
- 2:39:21He does. Pitch inside. He checks his swing. The ball gets by the catcher and goes to the backstop.
- 2:39:28The count I heard was just jogging to second base and he pulls up there.
- 2:39:33It's a walk to Dwyer, putting runners at first and second.
- 2:39:39Greg Gross will be the hitter. Get into a double play in the third inning.
- 2:39:43But he has also batted in three runs. He's got a couple of hits. He's two for five.
- 2:39:54The Cubs have been kind of coasting the last couple of innings, but they could afford to.
- 2:40:01They still have 17 runs, while Seattle has nine. It's been that kind of a day.
- 2:40:07Greg steps out of the batter's box for a moment.
- 2:40:09The Cubs got him, of course, from Houston, and he figures to be a very consistent hitter.
- 2:40:17There's the pitch to him. He takes a strike at the knees, a good fastball.
- 2:40:22The Cubs send a rookie infielder, Udio Gonzalez, to the Houston Astros for Gross.
- 2:40:31Hugh Gaugh, runners at first and second, strength one pitch, swung out.
- 2:40:34He pulls one down to the first baseman. Should have it. He does.
- 2:40:37And that will retire the Cubs in the eighth with no runs, no hits, one error, and two men left in the bases.
- 2:40:44So Seattle comes to bat here at Tempe, Arizona, bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:40:48It is still the Cubs 17, Seattle nine.
- 2:40:54It's the kind of a game, of course, that the kids really love.
- 2:40:57Lots of base runners, lots of hits, lots of action all the time.
- 2:41:02The purists will say, hey, that's no ballgame.
- 2:41:10Jimmy Todd, down on the hill for the Cubs.
- 2:41:16First pitch, swung on at a ground ball to the second baseman, Cabo here.
- 2:41:19He's up with it, and Jami Smith, retired in the first pitch in the eighth inning.
- 2:41:31This is Jimmy's first appearance with the Cubs since they got him earlier this week from Oakland for Joe Coleman.
- 2:41:39And he agreed to terms before the game today. He says it was a two-year contract.
- 2:41:45Right-hander stepping into the batter's box is one Bernhardt, and he takes a little high, ball one.
- 2:41:53Todd Wines, the big right-hander, his next pitch, a swing and a miss.
- 2:41:57He'll throw a sinker. Those with a cue, Jimmy, are throwing a spitball.
- 2:42:03He may have in the pass, but now that he's wearing a Cub uniform, you can be sure he will not throw it.
- 2:42:10Wind up in the pitch. It was after one.
- 2:42:12Prowse it back out of play. That ball was rising on the hitter.
- 2:42:19There was some speculation as to whether or not Jimmy Todd had been held out of action the last part of the 76 season
- 2:42:25when he was with Oakland because he might have arm trouble.
- 2:42:28He says, no, that was not at all. He just didn't let him work.
- 2:42:33He says he's perfectly healthy.
- 2:42:37Here's the wind up, and the both two pitch swung on.
- 2:42:39Ground ball, and right under the glove of Todd, bubbled by the shortstop.
- 2:42:44Simber, who is not finding this field exactly to his liking.
- 2:42:49He's wrapped pop-ups.
- 2:42:53Another ball got away from him, and here after this one went right between Jimmy Todd's legs and under his glove,
- 2:42:59Simber appeared to be Johnny on the spot. He was.
- 2:43:02But he couldn't pick up the ball either.
- 2:43:07So Bernard is on.
- 2:43:09There's two of the Cubbies take a stab at the ball, but can't come up with it. That'll be a dare.
- 2:43:13Lee Stanton steps in.
- 2:43:16Right hander, takes, it's a strike.
- 2:43:23Stanton has been on twice as a result of errors, and once with a triple.
- 2:43:32A veteran should help this ball club.
- 2:43:38Todd was taking almost too much time for it. Now we're ready to go.
- 2:43:41Here's the stretch of the pitch.
- 2:43:42Fast ball, sunk sharply and missed the strike zone, blown away.
- 2:43:57Todd looks over it first, delivers, there's a swing and a miss.
- 2:44:01Ball sunk pretty sharply.
- 2:44:1117-9 is the score, in case you just joined us.
- 2:44:15Yes, the Cubs are leading, of course.
- 2:44:21Now Todd is ready.
- 2:44:23Stanton swings and a bouncing ball to the shortstop.
- 2:44:25How will he do this time?
- 2:44:26Okay so far, over to second for one, the relay, double play.
- 2:44:31See how easy it is?
- 2:44:36There's no hits in there, wiped out with a double play.
- 2:44:41So we go into the ninth inning and the Cubbies coming to back are still out in front of Seattle, 17-9.
- 2:44:49There are over 60 general offices in Chicagoland.
- 2:44:52Call friendly Bob Adams to borrow up to $10,000. Call that over 3-2-0-2-0.
- 2:45:07Well, in the ninth inning, the Cubs are going to face a new pitcher, Roy Thomas.
- 2:45:16Tall, and I mean tall, he's 6'5", lists him at 2'15", he looks even way less than that.
- 2:45:2623 years old, born at Quantico, Virginia, just down a little ways from Washington, D.C.
- 2:45:33and of course it's been the headquarters for the United States Marine Corps, as long as man can remember, Quantico.
- 2:45:41Makes his home now on the other coast out of San Jose, California.
- 2:45:45Fits last year in the minors in Iowa.
- 2:45:48Roy Thomas, Bobby Mercer, the designated hitter today for the Cubs in the batter's box.
- 2:45:55Montague did an excellent job.
- 2:45:59Fits to four in the third inning.
- 2:46:03He gave up no runs.
- 2:46:11Thomas, big wind-up, and a swing and a miss by Mercer on the first pitch.
- 2:46:20As a D.H. today, Mercer's batted in a run with a single in the fourth inning.
- 2:46:25He's one for five.
- 2:46:27Here's a pitch to Bobby. Swung on, ground ball to the third baseman, he should get it.
- 2:46:31Up with the peg is Burdock, almost right away.
- 2:46:34What a stab by Danny Meyer for up, number one in the top of the ninth inning. And Scott Thompson will be the hitter.
- 2:46:46Remember opening day at Wrigley Field?
- 2:46:50Thursday, April the 7th, against the New York Mets.
- 2:46:53And they'll be there on Saturday and Sunday. And Sunday, the 10th of April, will be Monad Day for the ladies at Wrigley Field.
- 2:47:02First there's several promotions the Cubs will have this year.
- 2:47:05Thompson swings, the left-hander drives a five-ball into right-center field for a base hit, a single.
- 2:47:10Oh, bubble, now picked up, thrown too late to second base. It'll be a single and an error.
- 2:47:16Dumped it out into right-center field.
- 2:47:23Five. With one out.
- 2:47:28What are the nine errors today?
- 2:47:30Close to it. There's been a few other middle errors, too, that we won't want to add to it.
- 2:47:35You don't think this is the best ball game you ever saw?
- 2:47:37Not yet. But we've got to, let's see, five more outs to go.
- 2:47:47Aydin Wallace takes the fast ball and it does miss.
- 2:47:51Let's see, Tars today, reached his first four times up with a pair of walks and a pair of singles, and he scored four runs.
- 2:47:59And he finally rounded out in the seventh inning, the pitch.
- 2:48:03That's the day that hit her, and he takes it low.
- 2:48:09How about having your group out to Wrigley Field this year?
- 2:48:12Maybe your employees, huh?
- 2:48:14Low cost per person, group outing at Wrigley Field.
- 2:48:17During the first home stand of the season would be a good time to do it against the Mets.
- 2:48:21Distracts the pitch.
- 2:48:23Boy, this kid rears back and he's got that ball way behind his right ear, and then he suddenly unleashes it.
- 2:48:31Kind of a buggy with motion to that delivery of his.
- 2:48:39Leonard at second base with one out in the ninth.
- 2:48:42That's too high and tight, and that will put Joe Wallace on base.
- 2:48:45He draws his third walk today.
- 2:48:50Pines will be the hitter now. He started the ball game in Luckfield, and Genus moved over to play third base.
- 2:48:55He has a couple of hits, a couple of runs scored, and a run batted in.
- 2:49:00So your group outing at Wrigley Field.
- 2:49:04Don't you worry at all about details. The guy to call is Ernie Banks, manager at group sales now at Wrigley Field.
- 2:49:10You can get him at EB7-1919.
- 2:49:13And that's for the Ernie Banks Special Group Package.
- 2:49:18Curve ball thrown wide, ball one.
- 2:49:21That group sales staff will arrange for charter bus service.
- 2:49:23They'll see to it you all sit together at Wrigley Field in good, comfortable box seats.
- 2:49:28And have yourself some fun.
- 2:49:31There's a pitch swung on, ground ball right past the pitcher.
- 2:49:33Spins off the dirt into center field.
- 2:49:35Runner coming around third. He's going to score.
- 2:49:37Shouldn't be a play on him.
- 2:49:40Tried to cut it off at the mound, and the throw was off target.
- 2:49:44Got away, first baseman, but the catcher's there to pick it up.
- 2:49:48And Clines has himself another run batted in, his second today, and his third hit today.
- 2:49:53That only makes it 18-9.
- 2:49:59Runners at first and second.
- 2:50:02Second hit of the inning off of the rookie, right-hander Roy Thomas.
- 2:50:06And that brings up Ed Putman, struck out of the eighth inning against Montague.
- 2:50:15That is now with 20 base hits for the day.
- 2:50:19And an 18-9 lead.
- 2:50:24Couldn't get a single extra point.
- 2:50:30Up to now.
- 2:50:34Better hurry it up, or the sun is going to be setting.
- 2:50:37And they'll have to turn on the lights, which they have here.
- 2:50:41And it's comforting to know that they can turn on the lights, in case they need them.
- 2:50:51Roy Thomas delivers.
- 2:50:53Strike in the outside corner, Ed Putman.
- 2:50:59Lewis, maybe you should call Ernie Banks and see if he can get a special for your bowling group.
- 2:51:04They'd love to come out, I know.
- 2:51:06Would they let them all in the park the same day?
- 2:51:09Well, they wouldn't be sober. That'd be the only trouble, I think.
- 2:51:16I know that it's necessary for them to bowl at their peak efficiency.
- 2:51:20They have a little bit in them, but you know, to go to the ballgame, they could go without that.
- 2:51:25They could, but they wouldn't.
- 2:51:27That's strange, I know that.
- 2:51:30There's a swing and a miss.
- 2:51:32I know they'd bring their bowling balls to the ballgame.
- 2:51:41Out on Putman is Tillam Two.
- 2:51:44And they're two men on, with one away tonight.
- 2:51:48An historic battle, 18-9.
- 2:51:51Curve very high.
- 2:51:54He started about three feet over Putman's head, and it broke and was still over his head.
- 2:52:02So a full count.
- 2:52:05And cover hunters at first and second.
- 2:52:09Let's see if they might go with this.
- 2:52:13A look at second base.
- 2:52:15Right handers pitch, they don't go, and a swing and a miss.
- 2:52:20So that is strike three, and they're two gone in the ninth.
- 2:52:26And stepping into the batter's box now for the Cubs is Mick Keller.
- 2:52:30Mick reached down an error in the eighth inning.
- 2:52:33His only time up so far today.
- 2:52:39Kentucky got knocked out of that NCAA tournament.
- 2:52:42Michigan knocked out of their wake force.
- 2:52:48North Carolina winner, North Carolina Charlotte a winner over Michigan.
- 2:52:54And a swing and a very high foul ball that's going to be out of play to the right side.
- 2:52:58Now we have to pull for Marquette to go all the way.
- 2:53:00That'll be something.
- 2:53:01It'll be great.
- 2:53:02Al McGuire has always had tough tournament teams.
- 2:53:05And in this, his last year as head coach for the Warriors, it would be quite a way to go on.
- 2:53:16We saw the story out here a few days ago that Bobby Orr, or not Bobby Orr, Johnny Orr,
- 2:53:22the coach of the Michigan Wolverines were knocked out of that tournament.
- 2:53:27Upset by North Carolina Charlotte.
- 2:53:32Johnny's thinking that he may have to give up the coaching job for Michigan.
- 2:53:37Ulcers and pressure and everything else getting to him.
- 2:53:42That's too high. Ball one.
- 2:53:51There are runners at first and second.
- 2:53:52We're in the ninth inning with two up.
- 2:53:56Here's a pitch.
- 2:53:57Swung on foul.
- 2:53:58Back out of play against the backstop.
- 2:54:00And this crowd is so silent here you begin to wonder whether or not you're attending a funeral service.
- 2:54:07Of course it's 18 to 9.
- 2:54:13A lot of them are Seattle fans and they really don't have all that much to cheer about.
- 2:54:17There's a Dodger fan.
- 2:54:20I thought they were down in Florida.
- 2:54:23Here's a pitch.
- 2:54:24Goes after the fastball.
- 2:54:26Got it off the end of the bat and fouled it.
- 2:54:28Back up out of play.
- 2:54:33I got a hunch Lewis at this ballpark along about the middle of July when it gets a little warm shot here.
- 2:54:39Those seats could be just a little bit hot couldn't they?
- 2:54:42Won't be too many in the stands.
- 2:54:44They play mostly at night under these fine lights.
- 2:54:50One of the problems the Phoenix Giants have even though they've had some good teams,
- 2:54:54is after that next pitch it's high and he hits a foul ball.
- 2:54:57That's going to be back into the seats over near the cup.
- 2:55:00One of the problems they have is in that real heat of the midsummer here,
- 2:55:05even at night where they play all of their ball games over at the Phoenix park at Dandy,
- 2:55:09it still is too high.
- 2:55:11John Mickelson, our engineer, like most engineers, is the kind that you really can't rely on.
- 2:55:17He says, oh no, no, it's never too hot.
- 2:55:22He's working for the Chamber of Commerce.
- 2:55:28Now the pitch and a flat ball going out to the left fielder.
- 2:55:32He's coming in for it.
- 2:55:33Tommy Smith is under it, makes the catch and shallow left.
- 2:55:37Keva Herr is retired and the Cubbies in the ninth inning come up with one run.
- 2:55:41Couple of hits in the inning, a walk and an error, nearly two men on.
- 2:55:46And we are now going into the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:55:48Here at Tempe, Arizona it is the Cubs 18, Seattle 9.
- 2:55:54The first pitch, the bottom of the ninth is a ball, low and inside.
- 2:55:56Left-handed hitter, Danny Meyer, swings and misses.
- 2:56:00Ball one, strike one on him.
- 2:56:04Fuzzy Bavesi, top man of the San Diego Padres.
- 2:56:08Right under Ray Kroc, the chairman of the board of the ball club, is here taking in the game again today.
- 2:56:15There's a strike, ball one, strike two.
- 2:56:19You know, you can charge your tickets on MasterCharge or Bank of Maricarg
- 2:56:24for Cub games this year, first time ever.
- 2:56:27Here's the pitch, Jimmy Todd fires one and it's tap foul over by the Cub dugout.
- 2:56:34Thursday, April 7th is the opener.
- 2:56:36Then Cubs and the Mets are scheduled to play again on Saturday, the 9th of April,
- 2:56:40and Sunday, the 10th of April, with the 10th being Ladies' Botted Day.
- 2:56:44Swing and an inside delivery, pulled foul down the third base side, or first base side.
- 2:56:51But tickets go on sale, of course, at the ballpark the morning of each game,
- 2:56:54and advance sales now at the box office.
- 2:56:58And remember, you can charge it if you have MasterCharge or Bank of Maricarg.
- 2:57:04The number to call for tickets at Wrigley Field is 281-5050.
- 2:57:08Give them a call, Bundy, huh?
- 2:57:11Here's the windup, one-two delivery, swung on, a shot down the first base side.
- 2:57:15It is inside the line, going down into the corner.
- 2:57:18And here's the runner, Danny Meyer, rounding second.
- 2:57:20He is going to go into third, and there will be no play on him, a standup dribble.
- 2:57:24A blistering shot right past the colorful first base up fire, big run, there's the anto.
- 2:57:33Well, he's having himself quite a day.
- 2:57:35Two singles, a double, and a triple.
- 2:57:37A couple of runs batted in, two runs scored, with a chance to make a three.
- 2:57:43Danny Meyer, who started today, hitting 267 in spring training,
- 2:57:47has put umpteen points on his batting average.
- 2:57:50He started today with four hits.
- 2:57:52This spring he now has eight.
- 2:57:57And he's four for five.
- 2:58:03Now the batter's box is Joe List, who hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning off Joe Decker.
- 2:58:09He's now facing Jimmy Todd, and he looks, hits the ball a little low.
- 2:58:13Jimmy from the windup, here's the delivery.
- 2:58:16Whoa, good curve, taken for a strike.
- 2:58:22Throws a fast curve ball.
- 2:58:25Ball one, strike one.
- 2:58:28Windup by the big guy, and the curve this time is way off the mark, low and outside, ball two, strike one.
- 2:58:34Jimmy was really surprised when he got the news the other night that he had been traded to the Cubs from Oakland.
- 2:58:41He thought he would never again get a chance to wear a Cub uniform.
- 2:58:45Swing and a high foul, it's back out of play.
- 2:58:47Changed speeds on that curve a little bit.
- 2:58:52He was sent to Oakland a couple of years ago for champ summers.
- 2:58:56Now back with the Cubbies.
- 2:59:03Rudder at third base.
- 2:59:05The windup in the pitch lists swings and foul tips that it hit, but one's meant for a strikeout.
- 2:59:13One away here in the ninth.
- 2:59:16We have had 33 hits in this game, 20 by the Cubbies.
- 2:59:22I have 13, yeah, or 13 by them.
- 2:59:29The Vauqua has one of them at triple.
- 2:59:31He's stepping in now.
- 2:59:32He's been on errors too, scored a run, batted in one.
- 2:59:36Right hander takes, Todd misses outside.
- 2:59:42And the score, the Chicago Cubs, 19 Seattle, 8.
- 2:59:48Here's the windup.
- 2:59:49There's a swing and a tap past the pitcher.
- 2:59:51Shortstop charging in and he fumbles the ball.
- 2:59:53Holy mackerel.
- 2:59:57Well, Cember just couldn't make the pick up on that slow ball.
- 3:00:02Top pass to pitcher Jimmy Todd.
- 3:00:05It is now 18 to 10.
- 3:00:11Credit to Vauqua with a run batted in on it because they would not have been able to get the runner from third.
- 3:00:17And that is error number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, would you believe, 7 by the Cubs today.
- 3:00:26Jimmy Sexton steps in.
- 3:00:27Fouls, one back out of play.
- 3:00:31Manager Frank Robinson of the Cleveland Indians has been very upset with his ball clubs miscues in the field.
- 3:00:375 errors, 6 errors, 5 errors, 4 errors.
- 3:00:41But he still thinks they've got a real good shot at the Yankees this year in that American League Eastern Division.
- 3:00:46If they can forget their fumble-itis.
- 3:00:52On paper, of course, the Yankees look so loaded that it could be a shoe-in.
- 3:00:57But you don't play them on paper.
- 3:00:59There's a swing.
- 3:01:00He slaps the ground ball to the shortstop.
- 3:01:01Up to second for one, the relay.
- 3:01:03Whoops.
- 3:01:04Don't get the double play.
- 3:01:06The Seattle, perfect position to call it.
- 3:01:08Fielder's choice, keeps the inning alive.
- 3:01:12The Backwell forced at second base.
- 3:01:15And they're 2-gon to the ninth.
- 3:01:22Seattle has been charged with 3 errors today, so we've had a total of 10 in the ballgame.
- 3:01:28Here's Skip Jutzi, hitting in the ninth spot of the batting order.
- 3:01:32Here's a swing and a ground ball to the shortstop.
- 3:01:33He's got it.
- 3:01:34Nice going.
- 3:01:35Mike Simber feeds Kelleher perfectly.
- 3:01:38And to the ninth.
- 3:01:40One run, leadoff triple.
- 3:01:42One error, one man left down.
- 3:01:44And the Cubbies beat Seattle in this one at Tempe, Arizona.
- 3:01:50The final score of the Cubs, 18, and Seattle, 10.
