- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:05Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Good morning on a Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrook Coors Light. Choose chill.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Let's choose a little chill today.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Sam Darnold issue, if you can't tell. Two more interceptions
- 0:21Speaker 2: last night. His sixth and his seventh in four games.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Against the Broncos last night. Came in the fourth quarter
- 0:26Speaker 2: in an overtime, handing the Broncos a 17-14 overtime win.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Here was what those throws sounded like.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Nope.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Never mind. Seahawks are 3-3. They lost their second straight
- 0:39Speaker 2: game even after their defense allowed just 38 yards in
- 0:41Speaker 2: three periods after halftime. Tons more. I mean, tons more
- 0:45Speaker 2: from what I learned and heard last night in the
- 0:47Speaker 2: locker room in Denver. Coming up, I talked in the
- 0:50Speaker 2: locker room to Drew Locke, but not for what you
- 0:52Speaker 2: might think the reason is.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Well, we do have those picks coming up.
- 0:58Speaker 5: If you want to relive the misery that we lived
- 1:00Speaker 5: through last night, we do have that for you right here.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Do we want it? I mean, we can. We don't
- 1:10Speaker 3: have to, though.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Take a vote. Who wants to hear it?
- 1:15Speaker 2: The Huskies play today. They're 3-3 overall, 0-3 in the
- 1:19Speaker 2: Big Ten. 15th-placed team in the Big Ten is playing
- 1:22Speaker 2: Purdue tonight. 1 p.m., a Husky game day with the
- 1:25Speaker 2: Husky Honks, including Dave Softy-Maller in West Lafayette, Indiana. 5 p.m.
- 1:28Speaker 2: kickoff with Elyse Woodward, Cam Cleveland, and Softy-Maller. Washington State
- 1:32Speaker 2: Cougars 1-5 play at Oregon State tomorrow. 3 p.m. kickoff
- 1:35Speaker 2: from Corvallis. The game's on USA Cable Network. The Kraken
- 1:39Speaker 2: last night got a Matty Beneers goal. That second goal
- 1:43Speaker 2: of the season with just over four minutes remaining in
- 1:45Speaker 2: regulation tied Tampa Bay at two, but the Lightning won
- 1:48Speaker 2: with a goal two minutes in overtime by Victor Hedman.
- 1:50Speaker 2: He tapped a pass to himself and split two defenders,
- 1:52Speaker 2: poked the puck past Philip Grubauer. First loss in four
- 1:56Speaker 2: games on this road trip for the Kraken. The trip
- 1:59Speaker 2: ends tomorrow at the Florida Panthers. Kraken now five and
- 2:02Speaker 2: three on the season. Major League Baseball players, the Brewers.
- 2:06Speaker 2: They're getting ready for the World Series, their first one
- 2:08Speaker 2: since 1982. The Brewers took out the champ Dodgers. The
- 2:13Speaker 2: reign is over. The Dodgers go out in four straight
- 2:15Speaker 2: in the National League Championship Series. 6-4 win last night
- 2:19Speaker 2: for Milwaukee at Dodger State. I mean, Milwaukee hasn't been
- 2:22Speaker 2: to the World Series since Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Gorman Thomas.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of the Wisconsin people.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah, they're good people there.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And now they get to have a World Series in Milwaukee.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Who will they play? The Guardians or the Rays? The
- 2:34Speaker 2: Guardians beat Tampa yesterday, and Cleveland take a 2-1 series,
- 2:38Speaker 2: leading that best to seven. It looks like it's going
- 2:40Speaker 2: to go on for a while. And a report this
- 2:42Speaker 2: morning that Seattle, you talk about leverage. This is leverage
- 2:46Speaker 2: to drive up a bidding war. Seattle's no longer considered
- 2:49Speaker 2: a lock for an NBA expansion team. Commissioner Adam Silver
- 2:52Speaker 2: has informed team owners that who leaked that to Brian
- 2:56Speaker 2: Winhurst of ESPN. The league leaked it to Winhurst of ESPN.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Why would they do that? Because they want to leverage
- 3:02Speaker 2: other bidders, perhaps the ones that lose in Las Vegas,
- 3:05Speaker 2: to enter the Seattle bidding to drive up the price
- 3:07Speaker 2: up here. The league is reportedly using Mexico City as
- 3:10Speaker 2: a potential alternative to pressure Seattle's bidding group into raising
- 3:14Speaker 2: its offer.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Which is.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That's ridiculous, though. Mexico City?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Come on. It's so NBA, though.
- 3:22Speaker 2: That just means the price is not as high as
- 3:24Speaker 2: it is in Las Vegas right now. We're going to
- 3:26Speaker 2: go live to Renton. Coach Mike McDonald is talking now
- 3:29Speaker 2: live to us, the Seahawks beat writers. You hear that
- 3:32Speaker 2: now live in the wake of the loss. This is
- 3:34Speaker 2: part of our relentless coverage of the NFL.
- 3:35Speaker 7: This is football.
- 3:37Speaker 2: This is football.
- 3:38Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday. Football
- 3:45Speaker 1: Fridays are brought to you by Washington's Beef Farmers and Ranchers.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Craig Bell on your home for
- 3:55Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 3:56Speaker 8: He's done a lot of great things this year. We've
- 3:59Speaker 8: obviously turned the ball over for him more than we
- 4:01Speaker 8: want to. I feel like there's things on our end
- 4:06Speaker 8: that can help him play better football, and I think
- 4:10Speaker 8: he's definitely... part of the solution rather than, um, rather
- 4:17Speaker 8: than the opposite.
- 4:19Speaker 9: And then you talked about when you hired Brian Fleury,
- 4:22Speaker 9: part of the reason that you're, you found it appealing
- 4:24Speaker 9: was things that you could add, uh, to kind of
- 4:26Speaker 9: the Seahawks offense that you guys are building. Do you
- 4:29Speaker 9: feel like he can add those things without necessarily calling plays?
- 4:36Speaker 8: Well, I actually feel like one of, I don't know
- 4:41Speaker 8: if I actually felt like it was an ad. I
- 4:43Speaker 8: felt like it was going to be a great continuation
- 4:47Speaker 8: of what our identity was on offense. So I think
- 4:51Speaker 8: that's what our focus is right now is making sure
- 4:54Speaker 8: that we're playing the Seahawks-style offense that we all envisioned
- 4:59Speaker 8: when we decided all to work together. So I think
- 5:04Speaker 8: that's where our focus is right now.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Great.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Yep.
- 5:10Speaker 10: John? Yeah, Mike.
- 5:13Speaker 11: Defensively, what did you see in that kind of change
- 5:16Speaker 11: from they got the two long touchdown drives and then
- 5:19Speaker 11: really not much after that? What did you see improve
- 5:22Speaker 11: for your defense? Was it schematic stuff or just guys
- 5:26Speaker 11: kind of buckling down?
- 5:29Speaker 8: I think it's a great situation or observation of let's
- 5:38Speaker 8: not panic. you know, it's, um, there's things that we like,
- 5:42Speaker 8: if you look at how they got down there in
- 5:43Speaker 8: some of those situations, it was like an explosive run
- 5:45Speaker 8: that we could have played better. It was a third
- 5:47Speaker 8: down penalty. Uh, it's a couple of third downs. I
- 5:50Speaker 8: think it was on the, that we, um, frankly, I
- 5:54Speaker 8: probably could have called better plays. So it just felt
- 5:57Speaker 8: like there were things that were then like our control of, um,
- 6:02Speaker 8: kind of settling down and just kind of sticking to
- 6:05Speaker 8: the game plan and sticking to the process, staying together,
- 6:07Speaker 8: finding some, some more solutions. I think our coaches deserve
- 6:11Speaker 8: a lot of credit on, um, you know, the communication
- 6:14Speaker 8: we've had between, between me, AD, uh, the guys upstairs
- 6:18Speaker 8: and then the guys on the sideline of, um, really
- 6:21Speaker 8: finding solutions in that moment. And then, you know, trusting
- 6:24Speaker 8: the work we put in and the preparation and then
- 6:26Speaker 8: just sticking to it.
- 6:31Speaker 12: Ian.
- 6:33Speaker 7: Like on the, uh, Last interception, what did you see
- 6:37Speaker 7: looking back on it, and how would you just describe
- 6:40Speaker 7: your confidence level right now, and Sam and us, also
- 6:43Speaker 7: his confidence level, because it feels like that's pretty important
- 6:45Speaker 7: for that position.
- 6:47Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's a similar answer to what I
- 6:51Speaker 8: told Brian, was I think there's things that we can
- 6:55Speaker 8: all do to help Sam play better football, and we
- 7:01Speaker 8: trust Sam, we believe in him, and we feel like
- 7:03Speaker 8: he's definitely part of a solution, you know, in terms
- 7:06Speaker 8: of us playing better football on offense and at quarterback.
- 7:10Speaker 10: The Seahawks style offense that we all envisioned.
- 7:26Speaker 4: When.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Some of your biggest plays last year.
- 7:30Speaker 13: When Sam would get out of the pocket and would
- 7:33Speaker 13: find big chug plays downfield, he's getting out of the
- 7:36Speaker 13: pocket more this season, but you haven't had as many
- 7:39Speaker 13: of those big plays.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Why do you think that is?
- 7:43Speaker 8: Well, that's something we definitely want to encourage Sam to
- 7:45Speaker 8: continue doing. Obviously, within the progression of the play and
- 7:49Speaker 8: what's expected for you on a per-play basis, I think
- 7:55Speaker 8: those plays will happen, but how we play throughout the
- 7:59Speaker 8: down without the ball in our hands, that's really important.
- 8:01Speaker 8: That'll be something that we're going to be looking at.
- 8:03Speaker 8: I mean, to me, that's one of the kind of
- 8:08Speaker 8: the thorough investigation we want to be able to do
- 8:10Speaker 8: over the next 24, 36 hours to really understand where
- 8:15Speaker 8: we can take our game to another level.
- 8:18Speaker 13: And then on Arroyo, do you have any further information
- 8:21Speaker 13: on his shoulder injury?
- 8:24Speaker 8: I don't. I think he's getting some imaging and testing
- 8:28Speaker 8: as we speak actually so uh no update yet.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Thank you andrew.
- 8:36Speaker 14: Forgive me i'm on a phone here traveling to the
- 8:38Speaker 14: airport if you can't hear me well but um you've
- 8:41Speaker 14: had a few games of rotating christian ains and bo
- 8:44Speaker 14: stevens at right guard i'm just curious what you thought
- 8:46Speaker 14: of that rotation thank you.
- 8:49Speaker 8: I haven't had a chance to talk to our office
- 8:51Speaker 8: of staff yet about that specifically but um Anthony Bradford
- 8:58Speaker 8: probably has a really good chance of being back this week,
- 9:01Speaker 8: so that will be part of our decision-making as we
- 9:05Speaker 8: go forward.
- 9:09Speaker 10: Greg?
- 9:13Speaker 4: Hi, Mike.
- 9:14Speaker 2: You say Sam's best chance of a solution. You believe
- 9:18Speaker 2: he's part of a solution. What about Sam's game makes
- 9:22Speaker 2: him the solution? What are the traits that you're now
- 9:24Speaker 2: trying to draw out and attack that you're not getting
- 9:26Speaker 2: right now?
- 9:28Speaker 8: Well, I mean, you guys have been here over the
- 9:32Speaker 8: last two years. We just won a world championship with him.
- 9:38Speaker 8: We believe in the guy. We see him every day.
- 9:39Speaker 8: We see what he does. We see the plays he's
- 9:43Speaker 8: been able to make. We see the actual talent. All
- 9:49Speaker 8: those things. So that's where my mind is.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And you mentioned a half hour ago on the radio
- 9:58Speaker 2: show that this was an opportunity to have a connection,
- 10:01Speaker 2: more of a connection, the coaching staff and yourself with
- 10:04Speaker 2: your quarterback. What would you like to connect on? What's
- 10:08Speaker 2: the trigger you're trying to push on that?
- 10:13Speaker 8: I think it's more of a doubling down It's kind
- 10:17Speaker 8: of like, hey, look, when you're going through adverse situations,
- 10:21Speaker 8: you need to double down on your principles. And us
- 10:25Speaker 8: being aligned with Sam throughout the week and making sure
- 10:28Speaker 8: that we're letting him be the best version of himself
- 10:34Speaker 8: is definitely part of that kind of calculus, if you will.
- 10:38Speaker 8: And so that's really what I meant was we're not
- 10:42Speaker 8: reinventing anything, but double downing on those kind of like
- 10:44Speaker 8: core fundamentals of how he operates is going to be important.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Are you, are you concerned or is it just still
- 10:51Speaker 2: six games into a 17 game season and, and you're
- 10:54Speaker 2: confident this will fix?
- 10:58Speaker 8: I don't like using the word concern. I think, I think, um,
- 11:05Speaker 8: I think there's a sense of urgency to get better,
- 11:08Speaker 8: you know, in several areas of our football team. Um,
- 11:13Speaker 8: a lot of those are on offense on, uh, on,
- 11:19Speaker 8: how we're protecting the quarterback, how we're running the ball.
- 11:22Speaker 8: There's line items on defense, there's lines on special teams.
- 11:26Speaker 8: I really do believe, Greg, that these things are within
- 11:29Speaker 8: our control of things that are on the input side
- 11:33Speaker 8: of the equation of how we do things throughout the week,
- 11:37Speaker 8: what we do throughout the game. And so to me,
- 11:40Speaker 8: I wouldn't say it's exciting, but that does get you
- 11:43Speaker 8: going knowing that, hey, there's a solution out there and
- 11:47Speaker 8: I believe in our people. I believe in our ability
- 11:50Speaker 8: to solve problems and work through issues and go through
- 11:54Speaker 8: not around. That's a real thing that I really do
- 11:57Speaker 8: believe in. I think we're always optimistic that we're going
- 12:01Speaker 8: to be able to find solutions. However, you have to
- 12:04Speaker 8: do an honest process. You have to go through those things.
- 12:08Speaker 8: You can't just kid yourself in times like this. I'm
- 12:13Speaker 8: confident we're going to be able to do that and
- 12:16Speaker 8: a big part of this weekend is going to be
- 12:18Speaker 8: allocated to really continuing and making that process better.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 12:25Speaker 11: Ari? Hi, Mike.
- 12:28Speaker 15: I believe you talked about all the turnovers not being
- 12:31Speaker 15: on Sam. It's just like a whole team process that's
- 12:34Speaker 15: on the offense. Yesterday he addressed the team. I'm curious
- 12:38Speaker 15: what you think about him stepping up to do that,
- 12:41Speaker 15: to take ownership of the turnover. What does that tell
- 12:43Speaker 15: you about who he is?
- 12:46Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm glad he did. He's the leader of our offense,
- 12:51Speaker 8: and if it's not where you want it to be,
- 12:58Speaker 8: then it's the leader's job to take responsibility and go.
- 13:02Speaker 8: Just as I stand before you saying, hey, look, our
- 13:05Speaker 8: football team's not where we want it to be right now,
- 13:07Speaker 8: I'm responsible for what happens on the field for our team,
- 13:11Speaker 8: and so we kind of all take responsibility for our
- 13:15Speaker 8: area of influence. That's a great example of how we
- 13:20Speaker 8: want to operate. Let's own our part and let's figure
- 13:26Speaker 8: out a way to find a solution and move forward.
- 13:29Speaker 8: On the player side, it definitely starts with Sam and
- 13:31Speaker 8: I'm glad he's the first one to say it.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Brian?
- 13:37Speaker 9: Coach, last year when you guys were playing some of
- 13:40Speaker 9: your most explosive offense in the first part of the season,
- 13:42Speaker 9: you were seeing mostly heavy boxes, A-plus guys in the box,
- 13:46Speaker 9: and now teams seem to be playing a lot more
- 13:47Speaker 9: light boxes and a lot more coverage. Anytime a defense
- 13:51Speaker 9: does something, they're giving up something else. What are defenses
- 13:54Speaker 9: challenging you guys to do that you can punish them?
- 13:57Speaker 8: I think you know the answer to that one, Brian.
- 14:01Speaker 8: We have to be able to control the ball more.
- 14:02Speaker 8: That'll happen more through the run game. You know, Shell
- 14:07Speaker 8: boxes doesn't automatically mean more run. There's definitely ways, as
- 14:14Speaker 8: we've seen against our defense, like we're a shell defense
- 14:16Speaker 8: and teams try to attack us a certain way through
- 14:19Speaker 8: the air. So again, there's trade-offs to how teams are
- 14:24Speaker 8: playing it. That's something that we have to really find
- 14:27Speaker 8: a better solution for of how do we want to
- 14:29Speaker 8: keep moving the ball forward to really puncture these defenses
- 14:32Speaker 8: so we can create more explosive passes.
- 14:37Speaker 9: And then I think every sack you guys have had
- 14:39Speaker 9: on third down this year, I think at least with Sam,
- 14:41Speaker 9: have been on five yards or more. And how much
- 14:45Speaker 9: of the conversation that you guys are going to be
- 14:46Speaker 9: having is trying to get out of obvious pass situations
- 14:51Speaker 9: to keep defenses.
- 14:52Speaker 16: A little bit more on their heels?
- 14:55Speaker 8: Yeah, it's a great point. That's a huge part of
- 15:00Speaker 8: the conversation of understanding how we play our best football
- 15:09Speaker 8: and how Sam plays his best football and how we
- 15:10Speaker 8: can protect them the best. It's very, it's very difficult
- 15:13Speaker 8: to drop back in however many five man protection, six
- 15:17Speaker 8: man protection, seven man protections and do that. I don't
- 15:21Speaker 8: know X amount of times throughout a game. I don't
- 15:24Speaker 8: care how good your offensive line is. I don't care
- 15:25Speaker 8: how good your players are. Um, it's just too much
- 15:28Speaker 8: of a tax on, uh, offenses right now in the
- 15:31Speaker 8: NFL from, from the lens that, that we see it through. So, um,
- 15:37Speaker 8: we have to do a better job of staying out
- 15:38Speaker 8: of those situations. And that's going to be a part
- 15:42Speaker 8: of our focus here moving forward.
- 15:45Speaker 7: Thanks, John.
- 15:49Speaker 11: Yeah, Mike, I know there's a fumble he would want back,
- 15:51Speaker 11: but aside from that for Rashid, was that looking a
- 15:54Speaker 11: little more like how you guys want to get him involved?
- 15:56Speaker 11: Just ball finding him more, got a big plate downfield
- 15:58Speaker 11: and all that.
- 16:00Speaker 8: Yeah, she, she's definitely, I mean, we've seen it last year.
- 16:04Speaker 8: seen it in spurts this year him you know getting
- 16:06Speaker 8: over the top of defenses uh that's what we expect
- 16:10Speaker 8: from him and i think something that we saw throughout
- 16:13Speaker 8: the offseason that we want to make more come to
- 16:14Speaker 8: life in games are some of those more intermediate cuts
- 16:18Speaker 8: because i don't know if i was fighting rashid i'd
- 16:21Speaker 8: be playing off too you know and so you know
- 16:24Speaker 8: those those intermediate cuts um could i think we can
- 16:28Speaker 8: expect more to come to life try to give him
- 16:30Speaker 8: the ball but We've seen him in the run game.
- 16:32Speaker 8: We've seen him on the perimeter run game, over the top,
- 16:36Speaker 8: all those things. He's really his biggest impact on our
- 16:41Speaker 8: football team.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Brady? Hey, Mike.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Another one on the quarterback play.
- 16:47Speaker 13: I realize there are different opponents, and there was maybe
- 16:51Speaker 13: one or two players that were playing while Drew was
- 16:54Speaker 13: starting or while Drew was playing. But what do you
- 16:57Speaker 13: make of the fact that it was across the board,
- 16:59Speaker 13: it was just so much cleaner when Drew was in there,
- 17:01Speaker 13: no turnovers, I think only a couple stacks in those
- 17:04Speaker 13: two games, despite largely the same players around him?
- 17:09Speaker 8: Yeah, I respect the question. I think to make it
- 17:15Speaker 8: like a one-for-one, hey, this is the same and this
- 17:19Speaker 8: is different and it's one person, I don't think that's–
- 17:26Speaker 8: I don't think that's doing the whole thing justice. There's
- 17:28Speaker 8: definitely more.
- 17:28Speaker 4: To the equation.
- 17:32Speaker 8: What we called, how we got to it, that certain thing,
- 17:35Speaker 8: maybe the process for Drew, how he catered the game,
- 17:41Speaker 8: his skill set, all those things are part of the
- 17:43Speaker 8: conversation as well. I understand the question, but I think
- 17:48Speaker 8: there's more to it than just who's playing quarterback.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Thank you. Ian?
- 17:53Speaker 12: Ian?
- 17:55Speaker 7: Mike, your comment last night about the quarterback is getting
- 17:57Speaker 7: hit too much, is that just cumulative? I mean, everyone
- 18:00Speaker 7: looks at the offensive line at that point and says, well,
- 18:02Speaker 7: it must be the offensive line that's outside of Anthony,
- 18:04Speaker 7: the same guys as last year.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Is that scheme-related?
- 18:07Speaker 7: Is that quarterback holding the ball too long-related? Just kind
- 18:10Speaker 7: of elaborate on that because it feels like all these
- 18:13Speaker 7: things we're asking you is kind of coming back to
- 18:15Speaker 7: that same issue.
- 18:16Speaker 8: Yeah, like, I hope you understand, like, when you have, like,
- 18:24Speaker 8: At least I believe this. When you have things that
- 18:26Speaker 8: you want to improve on your team, so right now
- 18:28Speaker 8: we're talking about takeaways, and we're talking about getting the
- 18:31Speaker 8: quarterback hit, and we're talking about the run game, we're
- 18:33Speaker 8: talking about red zone defense, we're talking about the return
- 18:37Speaker 8: game on special teams. These are areas that we want
- 18:40Speaker 8: to improve, right? If you just point to a person
- 18:43Speaker 8: or a position group, it's like, that's not how football works, man.
- 18:46Speaker 8: It is a team game, and we spend a lot
- 18:49Speaker 8: of time with a lot of resources like investing in
- 18:53Speaker 8: the process and how we make these things come to
- 18:55Speaker 8: life on game day. And so it's never just like
- 18:58Speaker 8: a one person or a one group thing. Now, could
- 19:01Speaker 8: you say, hey, look, this group or this person needs
- 19:03Speaker 8: to perform better in their area of responsibility, head coach included?
- 19:07Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 19:07Speaker 8: And that's how we operate here. But could the offensive line,
- 19:11Speaker 8: can they step their game up? Yes, absolutely. But just
- 19:17Speaker 8: to point it on the offensive line, I think... Again,
- 19:20Speaker 8: same thing with the takeaways with Sam. Does Sam bear
- 19:23Speaker 8: responsibility for taking care of the football? Do our runners
- 19:25Speaker 8: take care of the responsibility for fun with the ball? Absolutely.
- 19:28Speaker 8: But it's a team game, and how we set our
- 19:32Speaker 8: game plans up and how we execute falls on all
- 19:37Speaker 8: of our shoulders. So that's how we choose to look
- 19:39Speaker 8: through it.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Last question, Jen.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Jen?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Coach Mike McDonald, the day after the Seahawks 17-0. 17-14
- 19:50Speaker 2: loss in Denver last night, saying twice this morning now
- 19:54Speaker 2: on his coach's show and now today, just now, you
- 19:57Speaker 2: heard him with us on the Beat Writers on the
- 19:58Speaker 2: Zoom call, that Drew Locke is not going to start
- 20:01Speaker 2: against Kansas City. Sam Donald is their quarterback. He said
- 20:05Speaker 2: that Sam Donald is the solution, that he firmly believes that.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And you heard me try to ask him what traits
- 20:12Speaker 2: about Sam Darnold. He said, wait a minute, we just
- 20:14Speaker 2: won a Super Bowl eight months ago. And this guy
- 20:17Speaker 2: was a huge reason why. There's three and three. There's
- 20:22Speaker 2: six games into a 17-game season. That's really the crux
- 20:25Speaker 2: of this. Yes, I know, there's three games back in
- 20:28Speaker 2: the lost column to San Francisco having lost the 49ers already.
- 20:32Speaker 2: But let me just tell you, the tenor last night
- 20:34Speaker 2: in Denver, in the locker room, we as fans and
- 20:38Speaker 2: people who follow it, We have little else to do
- 20:42Speaker 2: with the Seahawks except on game days, right? You go,
- 20:45Speaker 2: you watch the games, you react to how they play.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And last night they played well. The quarterback played poorly
- 20:52Speaker 2: while the defense played like a Super Bowl champion. And
- 20:55Speaker 2: so the visceral and emotional reaction to that is all
- 20:59Speaker 2: we really have between now and the next game nine
- 21:02Speaker 2: days from now. The Seahawks... That's not what the players
- 21:06Speaker 2: and the coaches do. The players and the coaches, here's
- 21:08Speaker 2: what happens. Last night, you would think, okay, they're throwing
- 21:12Speaker 2: stuff and turning over tables.
- 21:14Speaker 17: No.
- 21:15Speaker 2: They got IVs in their arms. They're dehydrated. They played
- 21:18Speaker 2: four and a half quarters at 5,280 feet. They're exhausted.
- 21:22Speaker 2: They played their second NFL game in four days, and
- 21:24Speaker 2: a lot of them couldn't barely walk before the game
- 21:26Speaker 2: even started. They just wanted to rest. They were absolutely disappointed.
- 21:32Speaker 2: They're frustrated with themselves and the penalties that they had
- 21:36Speaker 2: in the Chargers game, the turnovers they had in the
- 21:38Speaker 2: San Francisco game, in a Denver game. And they firmly
- 21:41Speaker 2: believe that the reason they have three losses is that
- 21:43Speaker 2: they made their own mistakes and they're laying in their
- 21:46Speaker 2: own bed with their own errors. And that's why they
- 21:49Speaker 2: have the three losses. Yes. But they are not in
- 21:53Speaker 2: crisis mode. Chicken Little's sky is falling. That was not
- 21:57Speaker 2: the tone last night in the locker room. It was, man,
- 22:01Speaker 2: we're beating ourselves. And we just went to the Super
- 22:04Speaker 2: Bowl and won it eight months ago. So we really
- 22:07Speaker 2: are a really good team that is coming back in full.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I mean, Anthony Bradford, being on the injured reserve list,
- 22:15Speaker 2: is about the only difference in starters from the Super
- 22:18Speaker 2: Bowl to last year. I know Kobe Bryant's gone, but
- 22:22Speaker 2: Ty Okada was on the field last night, and he
- 22:24Speaker 2: started 11 games last year. Rick Wolin's gone, and Josh
- 22:28Speaker 2: Jovich started most of last season. This team is returning
- 22:33Speaker 2: intact from just won the Super Bowl eight months ago.
- 22:34Speaker 2: But what that team didn't do was they didn't have
- 22:38Speaker 2: the killer turnovers at the most inopportune times. And they had,
- 22:42Speaker 2: I know the stats said earlier last season, the running
- 22:44Speaker 2: game wasn't up to par, but they don't have a
- 22:48Speaker 2: consistent threat in the running game that makes defenses have
- 22:50Speaker 2: to play them honestly. And the Denver Broncos really didn't
- 22:53Speaker 2: play them honestly either. The other thing is the Seahawks
- 22:56Speaker 2: don't have running backs that fit their outside zone system.
- 22:58Speaker 2: We saw again last night, Emmanuel Wilson's just slow. By
- 23:02Speaker 2: the time he gets to the outside zone lane that's
- 23:04Speaker 2: being blocked, the lane's closed. Outside zone is not man
- 23:08Speaker 2: blocking where you just plow your guy into the concession stand.
- 23:11Speaker 2: You have a timing synchronization where those linemen are only
- 23:15Speaker 2: required to just get in the way of a zone
- 23:18Speaker 2: block area. Not a guy, but whoever happens to be
- 23:21Speaker 2: in that zone. That's what zone blocking is. It's not
- 23:23Speaker 2: man-on-man drive blocking. It's get over to your lane, shade
- 23:27Speaker 2: off the guy that might be in the zone, and
- 23:30Speaker 2: As the running back has the choreography of getting through
- 23:32Speaker 2: that lane while you come over and slide in and
- 23:35Speaker 2: become almost like a pick playing basketball. Not to say
- 23:39Speaker 2: it's not physical, but it's not just plow your guy
- 23:41Speaker 2: DJ Fluker style into the ground. So the running back
- 23:46Speaker 2: needs to be fast enough to get through that hole
- 23:48Speaker 2: before it closes because the offensive linemen are not being
- 23:51Speaker 2: required to drive them into the end zone. And Wilson's
- 23:54Speaker 2: just too slow.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Everything that you're saying is what I was hanging out
- 23:59Speaker 5: with a couple of former NFL players last night down
- 24:02Speaker 5: at Muckleshoot Casino watching the game with them. And that
- 24:05Speaker 5: was exactly what they were saying as well.
- 24:07Speaker 3: They had a lot of criticism for E-dubs.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And when you have that as your basis of your offense, 50%
- 24:14Speaker 2: of the plays are supposed to be that, and you
- 24:17Speaker 2: don't have that back that can get through there, then
- 24:19Speaker 2: you get 56 dropbacks to throw like we got last
- 24:22Speaker 2: night from Sam Darnold. 56 dropbacks. This team will never
- 24:26Speaker 2: win a game throwing 56 times. 48 times plus four sacks,
- 24:32Speaker 2: 52 times in regulation. They will never win with numbers
- 24:35Speaker 2: that skewed. It was skewed in Washington. 48 dropbacks, I
- 24:39Speaker 2: think 46 dropbacks to 18 rushes. They lost that game too.
- 24:43Speaker 2: The offense is broken because they don't have a running
- 24:45Speaker 2: back to run their system. And that is a trickle-down
- 24:48Speaker 2: effect on defense is how they played Sam Darnold and
- 24:50Speaker 2: how Sam Darnold forces throws to try to make bigger
- 24:54Speaker 2: plays because it's not there and it forces third and longs.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You heard McDonald just mention we need to be better
- 24:59Speaker 2: on first and second down. To me, that's the root
- 25:02Speaker 2: cause of all of this. But then, It doesn't matter
- 25:06Speaker 2: if you didn't run the ball once. Sam Darnold's two
- 25:09Speaker 2: throws at the end of the game were horrid. That
- 25:11Speaker 2: throw in overtime was the worst throw I've seen him
- 25:14Speaker 2: throw since he became the Seahawks quarterback. That might be
- 25:16Speaker 2: the worst throw I've seen a Seahawks quarterback make, and
- 25:19Speaker 2: I start covering his team in Matt Hasselbeck 2005. That
- 25:22Speaker 2: throw in that situation was horrid. In overtime, just don't
- 25:28Speaker 2: get his third and seven punt. If you punt there,
- 25:32Speaker 2: the Broncos are like at the 20.
- 25:33Speaker 3: You flip the field, yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 18: And they've got to drive 80 yards or 60 yards
- 25:37Speaker 18: or 50 yards to win the game. And the Seahawks
- 25:40Speaker 18: defense had held them to 39 yards from the second
- 25:44Speaker 18: quarter on. After halftime, the Broncos had 39 yards and
- 25:48Speaker 18: one first down on 20 plays. So you mean to
- 25:51Speaker 18: tell me if they had started at the 20 at
- 25:53Speaker 18: that point in the game, they were going to march
- 25:54Speaker 18: down the field and win the game?
- 25:55Speaker 6: No.
- 25:56Speaker 2: The Seahawks would have made them punt. Then Darnold could
- 25:58Speaker 2: have gotten the ball back. minus 40 or so on
- 26:01Speaker 2: his side of the field, and try again. Instead, he
- 26:04Speaker 2: forces it in and hands the Broncos the win. 49451,
- 26:08Speaker 2: the Commodots text line. Your reaction to Mike McDonald saying
- 26:11Speaker 2: he ain't changing quarterbacks. It's Sam Darnold starting in nine
- 26:15Speaker 2: days against Kansas City. Up next, you'll hear from the
- 26:19Speaker 2: Seahawks quarterback, the same one that's going to be the
- 26:21Speaker 2: quarterback against Kansas City. Sam Darnold is up next. 11 o'clock,
- 26:25Speaker 2: we have a special treat. Our high school football focus
- 26:29Speaker 2: is focusing the best coach there is in this state,
- 26:32Speaker 2: the legend, the all-time winningest coach, Monty Kohler, the head
- 26:36Speaker 2: coach and athletic director of O'Day High School. They have
- 26:39Speaker 2: a gigantic one tonight out on the plateau against Eastside Catholic.
- 26:42Speaker 2: We'll talk to Eastside Catholic's coach. Jeremy Tealbar as well
- 26:47Speaker 2: at 1110 right after Monte Kohler. 1135 Factor Fiction, your
- 26:51Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000. All that's coming up on a
- 26:53Speaker 2: Washington State Beat Commission football Friday. Husky game day, 1
- 26:56Speaker 2: o'clock pregame show, 5 o'clock kickoff. Huskies in Purdue. All
- 27:00Speaker 2: that's coming up on KJR.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 27:19Speaker 1: with Greg Bell.
- 27:21Speaker 2: On your home for the NFL.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Welcome back. I'm straight off a plane from Denver. Didn't
- 27:37Speaker 2: sleep last night. Went straight from the stadium to the airport,
- 27:40Speaker 2: to the airport, to SeaTac.
- 27:42Speaker 7: I couldn't tell.
- 27:42Speaker 2: To SeaTac to here. Oh, I'm wearing the same clothes
- 27:45Speaker 2: I wore at the game last night.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Oh, that's why you look so nice.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Oh, thanks.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I don't look nice. I look unkept, disheveled, wrinkled. 22C
- 27:54Speaker 2: for the three hours coming here.
- 27:56Speaker 3: That does not sound like my favorite seat.
- 27:59Speaker 2: As Lisa's on the aisle. I was in Denver last
- 28:03Speaker 2: night covering the Seahawks. 17-14 overtime loss. They scored 11
- 28:08Speaker 2: points in the last five minutes to rally from 14-3.
- 28:11Speaker 2: They had three points for 55 minutes. That's how broken
- 28:14Speaker 2: the offense is. They had a defense that held the
- 28:16Speaker 2: Broncos to 39 yards on 20 plays and one first
- 28:20Speaker 2: down after halftime, and they didn't win. They had a
- 28:24Speaker 2: quarterback who threw for, what did end up Nick's getting
- 28:27Speaker 2: through for like 93 yards or something? I mean, Nick's.
- 28:33Speaker 2: The last time I'd seen Bo Nix play in person
- 28:35Speaker 2: was the Oregon-Washington Pac-12 title game in Las Vegas.
- 28:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I wasn't there, but I saw him.
- 28:40Speaker 2: He was brilliant. That was one of the better college
- 28:42Speaker 2: games I've ever seen. Both those quarterbacks that night, Pennix
- 28:46Speaker 2: and Nix. Last night, Nix couldn't have hit. I mean,
- 28:52Speaker 2: it was amazing how inaccurate his throws were. And he
- 28:54Speaker 2: wasn't throwing down the field too often. The two times
- 28:57Speaker 2: he did throw down on the field was at Devin Witherspoon, curiously. One,
- 29:03Speaker 2: I'm not sure why Witherspoon grabbed Cortland Sutton in the
- 29:05Speaker 2: end zone for the DPI, and he did. He grabbed
- 29:08Speaker 2: him right across the chest.
- 29:09Speaker 3: It was unnecessary.
- 29:10Speaker 2: That throw was 10 yards overthrown. That ball was going
- 29:12Speaker 2: to be nowhere near caught. And then the deep ball
- 29:17Speaker 2: in the second quarter that Witherspoon made a brilliant play on,
- 29:21Speaker 2: he had the timing right on that one and put
- 29:22Speaker 2: his arm across the chest as the ball was arriving
- 29:24Speaker 2: near the goal line to break it up. And that's
- 29:26Speaker 2: about the only two times I can remember him throwing,
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yet he was so inaccurate, even on his five-yard passes. Really,
- 29:34Speaker 2: really inaccurate.
- 29:37Speaker 6: J.K.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Dobbins got loose a couple times, and that was about it.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Early in the game, remember, the only two scores for
- 29:44Speaker 2: Denver came on drives of 79 and 74 yards. And J.K. Dobbins,
- 29:49Speaker 2: he had a 16-yard run where he juked both Nicky
- 29:52Speaker 2: Manwari and Devin Witherspoon, the two best defenders on the team.
- 29:55Speaker 2: He juked them both. That was the same drive that
- 29:58Speaker 2: they had stopped him on a third and 10 on
- 30:01Speaker 2: a wide receiver screen. And Byron Murphy made a great
- 30:03Speaker 2: hustle play from defensive tackle, ran outside. But when he
- 30:06Speaker 2: made the tackle on the wide receiver, he grabbed his
- 30:08Speaker 2: face mask and pulled him down with a face mask
- 30:10Speaker 2: for a 15-yard penalty, extended the drive to the second
- 30:13Speaker 2: touchdown for Denver. And that was it. When they quit,
- 30:18Speaker 2: I talked to Julian Love. You'll hear him at 1045
- 30:19Speaker 2: in the locker room last night. When they quit doing
- 30:21Speaker 2: their own mistakes of face masks and missed tackles, the
- 30:25Speaker 2: Broncos went nowhere. But in the meantime, the offense for
- 30:28Speaker 2: the Seahawks again went nowhere. Sam Darnold with crushing interceptions
- 30:32Speaker 2: with a minute and a half left when they were
- 30:33Speaker 2: on the edge of field goal range to tie the game.
- 30:37Speaker 2: They frantically come back and tie the game anyway. And
- 30:40Speaker 2: then in overtime, the inexcusable, I mean inexcusable play of
- 30:44Speaker 2: trying to fit it in a tight window on a
- 30:46Speaker 2: line to Rashid Jahid down the sidelines. He had Cooper Cupp.
- 30:50Speaker 2: I saw it in the press box, and to his credit,
- 30:52Speaker 2: Sam Donaldson, yep, I should have thrown to Cupp. He
- 30:55Speaker 2: was underneath on the same side, underneath the coveries that
- 30:58Speaker 2: was going deep on Shahid, and he had thrown it.
- 31:00Speaker 2: He said, well, he's a little short of the sticks,
- 31:02Speaker 2: but Cupp probably would have gotten there on a third
- 31:05Speaker 2: and seven. And even if he didn't, like we said,
- 31:07Speaker 2: then you punt. There's seven minutes left in overtime. The
- 31:09Speaker 2: Seahawks are going to stone the Broncos yet again in
- 31:11Speaker 2: their own 20-yard line, and then you get the ball
- 31:13Speaker 2: back with three or four minutes left in overtime. So what? Instead,
- 31:17Speaker 2: he forces it in. A junior high throw down the sidelines,
- 31:20Speaker 2: intercepted by the nickelback who was just waiting. That was
- 31:23Speaker 2: just bad. It really was in the situation. This was
- 31:27Speaker 2: Sam Darnold last night owning it. He went into the
- 31:31Speaker 2: locker room after the game, by the way, stood up
- 31:32Speaker 2: in front of his own teammates and said, this loss
- 31:35Speaker 2: is on me. I blew it, guys. This was Sam
- 31:38Speaker 2: Darnold last night in Denver.
- 31:40Speaker 19: Yeah, no way to sugarcoat it.
- 31:41Speaker 4: That one sucked.
- 31:41Speaker 19: You know, can't turn the ball over.
- 31:45Speaker 4: You know, that's obviously....
- 31:49Speaker 19: You know, at the forefront of my mind. But there's
- 31:52Speaker 19: just a lot, you know, a lot we can do better.
- 31:56Speaker 19: You know, obviously we're driving, we're running the ball and,
- 32:00Speaker 19: you know, we're dropping back and having some things work
- 32:03Speaker 19: in the dropback game. Some of the play action stuff
- 32:05Speaker 19: was a little iffy tonight, but yeah, we just got
- 32:08Speaker 19: to be better all around and it starts with me.
- 32:11Speaker 19: So we just got to, you know, look at who
- 32:14Speaker 19: we are as an offense, look at kind of things
- 32:17Speaker 19: that we do well things that we don't do well
- 32:19Speaker 19: and go from there.
- 32:21Speaker 2: What do you feel like you do well at this point?
- 32:23Speaker 19: Yeah, I think, you know, I pretty much said it.
- 32:26Speaker 19: I think like our run game, um, is good at times. Um,
- 32:29Speaker 19: and then there's some, sometimes where it's, where it's not
- 32:31Speaker 19: so good, but that's, that's how it goes. Like sometimes
- 32:34Speaker 19: you're not going to, you know, get five or six
- 32:37Speaker 19: yards every single time you run the football. Um, but
- 32:41Speaker 19: you know, I felt like our run game was, um,
- 32:44Speaker 19: was pretty good at times tonight. Um, And then, yeah,
- 32:47Speaker 19: I feel like, again, it's just one of those things. Like,
- 32:51Speaker 19: when you have a defense and a special teams group
- 32:52Speaker 19: that's playing the way that they are for us, like,
- 32:55Speaker 19: for me, I just got to protect the football. And
- 32:57Speaker 19: dropping back and taking what they give me, I feel
- 32:58Speaker 19: like I did a pretty good job of that in
- 33:00Speaker 19: the first half. And then late in the second half, man,
- 33:02Speaker 19: those two plays, it's just.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Can't have it. You got hit, like, I think 17
- 33:08Speaker 4: times today. Was that something Debra was doing?
- 33:09Speaker 16: Was that protection?
- 33:10Speaker 4: Or how would you sum up that? Yeah, again, you
- 33:12Speaker 4: got to.
- 33:13Speaker 19: You've got to give credit to those guys. They've got
- 33:15Speaker 19: a really tough defense, really good defensive coordinator in Vance.
- 33:20Speaker 19: There's obviously things that we can do better, but it's
- 33:22Speaker 19: tough to say without looking at the tape yet.
- 33:24Speaker 6: What do you think the.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Biggest difference has been since last.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Year?
- 33:29Speaker 19: I'm not going to compare last year and this year.
- 33:31Speaker 19: It's the 20-26 Seahawks. There's a lot of things that
- 33:34Speaker 19: we need to get better at, and I'll just leave
- 33:36Speaker 19: it at that.
- 33:36Speaker 2: What did you see on the two picks? The first one,
- 33:39Speaker 2: I feel like I had.
- 33:43Speaker 19: Coop in the flat, thought his man might have been
- 33:45Speaker 19: driving it. Just wanted to progress and felt like I
- 33:48Speaker 19: had some good options, especially in their man coverage on
- 33:50Speaker 19: that play specifically. And just got a little bit of
- 33:54Speaker 19: pressure and forced me to make an errant throw. And, yeah,
- 33:58Speaker 19: just guy made a good play as well. But, you know,
- 34:00Speaker 19: and then the other one just got greedy. You know,
- 34:02Speaker 19: they did a good job in their, you know, cover
- 34:05Speaker 19: two type defense.
- 34:07Speaker 20: Got greedy in choosing Shahid or throwing it on the
- 34:09Speaker 20: line or both?
- 34:10Speaker 2: No, just, I mean.
- 34:12Speaker 19: You know, I feel like that play specifically, I should
- 34:15Speaker 19: have just gotten it down to Coop. Coop ran a
- 34:17Speaker 19: really good route, you know, right under the sticks, and
- 34:20Speaker 19: I feel like he would have caught it and got
- 34:21Speaker 19: the first down. So just got to continue to go
- 34:25Speaker 19: through my progressions and trust it.
- 34:27Speaker 2: You told us back in Renton you wanted to be
- 34:29Speaker 2: more decisive.
- 34:29Speaker 4: How did you move in that regard?
- 34:31Speaker 19: Yeah, I felt like I was pretty decisive, you know,
- 34:34Speaker 19: the first and second, you know, first half, first and
- 34:37Speaker 19: second quarter.
- 34:38Speaker 4: You know, really, really the whole game.
- 34:40Speaker 19: I felt like I was really decisive.
- 34:41Speaker 4: I just.
- 34:42Speaker 8: There's a couple plays I'd like to have back.
- 34:45Speaker 19: Unfortunately, sometimes that's how football goes, but it's not acceptable
- 34:49Speaker 19: for me to keep turning the ball over that way.
- 34:53Speaker 11: You told us that you talked to the team right
- 34:55Speaker 11: away and kind of put it on you. Why was
- 34:57Speaker 11: that important to you to do that?
- 35:00Speaker 19: I just think it's BS for me to keep turning
- 35:04Speaker 19: the ball over. It's not fair to our defense, not
- 35:07Speaker 19: fair to our special teams group, and not fair really
- 35:08Speaker 19: to the entire team. I've got to be better that way.
- 35:12Speaker 7: Are you right physically?
- 35:14Speaker 4: Are you okay physically? Yeah, I feel good.
- 35:17Speaker 9: With these 15 hits, at one point it was 15
- 35:21Speaker 9: hits anyway, how was that dealing with that and.
- 35:24Speaker 19: The constant pressure that they had? Like I said, they
- 35:27Speaker 19: have a good defense and really good pass rushers.
- 35:32Speaker 20: When you take a step a little bit back and
- 35:35Speaker 20: say we're 3-3, is it a solace that you guys
- 35:38Speaker 20: know why? If you cut down on the turnovers, you
- 35:41Speaker 20: cut down on the penalty mistakes, you're probably losing.
- 35:44Speaker 19: Is that a loss or a silver lining? I mean, yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 19: you can look at it however you want.
- 35:49Speaker 7: We're 3-3.
- 35:50Speaker 19: There's a lot of football left, and we need to
- 35:52Speaker 19: get better.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Zach, how have the last two weeks been on your end?
- 35:55Speaker 4: What has the field contributed to that?
- 35:57Speaker 19: Yeah, I think I could do a better job of
- 35:59Speaker 19: getting the ball out.
- 36:02Speaker 2: He wanted to leave by the end of that. I mean,
- 36:07Speaker 2: he wore it, though. He went in front of the
- 36:09Speaker 2: guys in the locker room and said, guys, this one's
- 36:12Speaker 2: on me. I own this. For those mistakes at the
- 36:14Speaker 2: end of the game, especially the overtime one, you heard
- 36:17Speaker 2: him say, our defense deserves better. And they do. They
- 36:21Speaker 2: have a Super Bowl champion defense that led the league
- 36:23Speaker 2: in points allowed last year and last night allowed 39
- 36:28Speaker 2: yards over the last three quarters of the game. The
- 36:32Speaker 2: third quarter, the fourth quarter, and overtime, although there was
- 36:35Speaker 2: an abbreviated drive. The Broncos did not even have to
- 36:38Speaker 2: get a first down to win the game in overtime
- 36:41Speaker 2: because Darnold handed them the ball in scoring position. That
- 36:45Speaker 2: just cannot happen. Seven touchdowns against seven interceptions for Sam
- 36:50Speaker 2: Darnold this year. He's tied for the league league in interceptions.
- 36:53Speaker 2: He was going into the game leading the league in
- 36:55Speaker 2: interception percentage of his throws being intercepted because he has
- 36:58Speaker 2: fewer throws than other starters because he missed One and
- 37:00Speaker 2: three quarters a game. Actually, one and seven eighths, really,
- 37:04Speaker 2: a game. And Drew Locke was spotless. No turnovers in
- 37:09Speaker 2: his two games playing for Sam Darnold. Jessamyn, I knew
- 37:13Speaker 2: where this was headed, and I knew McDonald was going
- 37:15Speaker 2: to say he's not changing because the one big reason
- 37:18Speaker 2: is because there's 10 days between games. If he announces
- 37:21Speaker 2: now that everything's on the table, including the starting quarterback,
- 37:26Speaker 2: his locker room will be going, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Are we getting a little panicky here? And then they
- 37:32Speaker 2: have nine days to stew on that. So he was
- 37:35Speaker 2: going to squelch that this morning. And that's why on
- 37:38Speaker 2: his coach's show, the question was planted by the host
- 37:41Speaker 2: so that they could just squelch it now so the
- 37:43Speaker 2: players can go off to their off weekend without having
- 37:46Speaker 2: to think that the Seahawks sky is falling on the
- 37:48Speaker 2: quarterback situation. What do you think? Would you start Drew
- 37:51Speaker 2: Locke or would you start Sam?
- 37:52Speaker 6: I wouldn't.
- 37:53Speaker 5: I would keep with Sam. I would keep with Sam.
- 37:56Speaker 5: that's what I would do right now. And they have
- 37:58Speaker 5: nine days, just like you said, that they do not,
- 38:02Speaker 5: if they pull that parachute cord, there's no putting it
- 38:06Speaker 5: back in the backpack. Yeah.
- 38:07Speaker 2: What do you do? Do you bring them back in
- 38:08Speaker 2: like unbench them? I mean, right, exactly.
- 38:11Speaker 3: I mean, I saw the same thing at Washington state.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing though, excuse me, before you talk
- 38:15Speaker 2: about Washington, what I meant to talk about the top
- 38:17Speaker 2: of the show, but we had the press conference. To me,
- 38:19Speaker 2: the question is not who starts against Kansas city. It's,
- 38:24Speaker 2: The contract situation for next year for Darnold. Because remember,
- 38:28Speaker 2: he's in line to get a $ 50 million or so
- 38:31Speaker 2: before this. He was in line for a $ 50 million
- 38:33Speaker 2: or so a year contract to be the– he's only 29.
- 38:37Speaker 2: He was going to be the Seahawks quarterback for the
- 38:38Speaker 2: foreseeable future. Now what? That's the crux of what's going
- 38:43Speaker 2: on right now. Are John Schneider and Mike McDonald going,
- 38:46Speaker 2: wait a minute, is this our guy or what? I mean,
- 38:49Speaker 2: Drew Locke's contract's up this year too. He's not your
- 38:51Speaker 2: quarterback of the future, is he? He's only 28. Jalen
- 38:54Speaker 2: Melrose sure hasn't shown he's the quarterback of the future.
- 38:57Speaker 2: What is the Seahawks' situation at quarterback beyond next year
- 39:00Speaker 2: when Darnold's contract ends? That's now the issue.
- 39:04Speaker 3: It is for us, but it is not for them.
- 39:06Speaker 3: They are focused on the next game.
- 39:08Speaker 2: In the locker room?
- 39:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:09Speaker 2: But John Schneider sure as hell has got a plan
- 39:11Speaker 2: and budget for this. And he thought he was about
- 39:13Speaker 2: to pay $ 50 million a year for Sam Darnold, and
- 39:16Speaker 2: now he's got to think, well, do I want to
- 39:18Speaker 2: do that? Is this the guy we're going to ride with?
- 39:22Speaker 2: is Sam Darnold. The Sam Darnold he was for the
- 39:25Speaker 2: Minnesota Vikings in his breakout season 2024. And then the
- 39:29Speaker 2: Seahawks go into the Superbowl or is he the Sam
- 39:31Speaker 2: Darnold in the other seven seasons of his career for
- 39:34Speaker 2: the jets, the Panthers never got to play for the 49ers.
- 39:38Speaker 2: And now these first four games for the Seahawks.
- 39:41Speaker 15: Hmm.
- 39:42Speaker 2: And if that's the question, do you want to pay
- 39:44Speaker 2: that guy $ 50 million?
- 39:46Speaker 5: So do I need to make a mock-up of, will
- 39:49Speaker 5: the real Sam Darnold please step up? Like, do I
- 39:52Speaker 5: have to go Slim Shady on us?
- 39:54Speaker 2: Somebody may. I'm telling you, you're right. In the locker room,
- 39:59Speaker 2: they're worried about Kansas City. But in the building and upstairs,
- 40:02Speaker 2: John Schneider's plans, he's got to think about, is this
- 40:06Speaker 2: the guy I want to have the keys of the
- 40:08Speaker 2: franchise for five or six years at 50 mil a year?
- 40:11Speaker 3: What if he had a run game right now?
- 40:13Speaker 2: I think it would change everything.
- 40:15Speaker 7: Right.
- 40:15Speaker 3: So is that on him?
- 40:17Speaker 5: Is he still the same dartle we saw last year
- 40:19Speaker 5: because he had the run game?
- 40:21Speaker 2: It's on John Schneider for making the choice they made
- 40:24Speaker 2: philosophically at running back and letting Kenneth Walker go and
- 40:26Speaker 2: putting all his eggs into the Jedarian price basket. Now
- 40:30Speaker 2: we have a trade deadline coming up November 10th. He
- 40:31Speaker 2: has a chance to fix that. It'll cost him some
- 40:33Speaker 2: of his 11th draft picks next year. But that's where
- 40:36Speaker 2: the situation stands to me. Up next, what I heard
- 40:38Speaker 2: in the locker room last night. I talked to Julian Love.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I talked to Charles Cross. I talked to A.J. Barner.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Had a nice sit-down with A.J.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Barner.
- 40:45Speaker 2: He had nice things to say about my last week
- 40:47Speaker 2: or so. I appreciate the Ohio guy sticking with his
- 40:50Speaker 2: fellow Buckeye. What I learned and what I heard in
- 40:53Speaker 2: the locker room next, 11 o'clock, Monty Kohler, the legendary
- 40:56Speaker 2: coach from O'Day High School, and Jeremy Theodol is the
- 41:01Speaker 2: head coach at Eastside Catholic. They play each other. The
- 41:03Speaker 2: two powers play each other. We'll do that at 11
- 41:06Speaker 2: o'clock in a Factor Fiction, 1135 on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre on a Washington State Beef Commission
- 41:26Speaker 2: Football Friday, Husky Football Game Day, 1 p.m. pregame show
- 41:29Speaker 2: from West Lafayette, Indiana, 5 p.m. kickoff with Elyse Woodward,
- 41:32Speaker 2: Cam Cleland, Dave Softy-Muller, Washington at Purdue, 5 p.m. kickoff
- 41:36Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJR FM. I was in Denver last night,
- 41:40Speaker 2: straight off a plane from the Seahawks 17-14 overtime loss,
- 41:43Speaker 2: and I went up in the locker room to Julian
- 41:44Speaker 2: Love for a state-of-the-team perspective of what the vibe is
- 41:48Speaker 2: in the locker room. This is what Julian Love said.
- 41:50Speaker 4: This is a little unusual for you guys.
- 41:52Speaker 12: It's unusual for sure. I mean, we're just not playing
- 41:54Speaker 12: any good.
- 41:54Speaker 4: I think on defense, we have to start much faster.
- 41:57Speaker 12: They're going to have their way with us in those
- 41:59Speaker 12: two drives. Penalties attributed to it. Continue to play clean
- 42:02Speaker 12: is a priority, and then red zone is a priority.
- 42:05Speaker 2: It's interesting.
- 42:06Speaker 12: We got to be competitive in the turnover battle, and
- 42:09Speaker 12: now it's killing us. So chasing those kind of little edges.
- 42:13Speaker 7: It was a.
- 42:13Speaker 12: Good team in a hostile environment. We felt like we
- 42:16Speaker 12: had a shot to win that game. The guys were
- 42:18Speaker 12: confident all game that we had our moment. So the
- 42:22Speaker 12: good news is we fought back.
- 42:23Speaker 7: We did.
- 42:24Speaker 12: We showed what kind of world we were made of.
- 42:28Speaker 12: And just kind of callousing that up, the competitive stamina.
- 42:30Speaker 12: Those guys can miss these games.
- 42:32Speaker 4: First two drives, uncharacteristic. Missed tackles, face mask penalties.
- 42:36Speaker 2: But then nothing from those two drives. Nothing until the
- 42:40Speaker 2: end of the game.
- 42:40Speaker 4: What changed? I think we just cut our group.
- 42:43Speaker 12: I think we have two third down stops in there,
- 42:46Speaker 12: negated by penalties.
- 42:47Speaker 6: It's like, okay.
- 42:49Speaker 4: In those moments, you just kind of reset, regroup, and
- 42:52Speaker 4: just finish.
- 42:53Speaker 12: You guys need to come back even though there was
- 42:55Speaker 12: a stop emotionally and you see a penalty throw.
- 42:58Speaker 2: But in those moments, we just kind of lock in.
- 43:00Speaker 4: What's the psyche in there? How the hell are we 3-3?
- 43:04Speaker 2: I think we.
- 43:06Speaker 12: Know exactly why we're 3-3. There's only anybody looking around
- 43:10Speaker 12: wondering why we're 3-3. We're not playing the games we lost.
- 43:16Speaker 2: We're not playing good ball. So that's the result. That
- 43:19Speaker 2: was close.
- 43:20Speaker 4: We were competitive.
- 43:21Speaker 12: The guys fought. But you just got to play cleaner
- 43:23Speaker 12: football in the league. Yeah, I mean, it's early in
- 43:28Speaker 12: the year. You definitely have to keep the season going.
- 43:31Speaker 12: Long weekend, you know, guys just reset, kind of go
- 43:33Speaker 12: with their families, just reset the body, mind, spirit, everything.
- 43:37Speaker 12: And when we get back in Monday, wherever it is,
- 43:40Speaker 12: we're back on it. That's kind of how we operate, win, loss, whatever.
- 43:43Speaker 12: There's urgency, obviously, because some things are just really not
- 43:46Speaker 12: good right now. But there's a lot of things that
- 43:48Speaker 12: we are doing very well. So we highlight those and
- 43:50Speaker 12: just collect the things that we aren't. Whatever, just regroup, reset,
- 43:54Speaker 12: and just finally get it in.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Julian Love last night with me in the locker room.
- 43:59Speaker 2: You can hear this quiet. Nobody's throwing and yelling and screaming.
- 44:02Speaker 2: But certainly no music playing. We haven't even talked about
- 44:05Speaker 2: the offensive line. Gray Zabel had his worst game as
- 44:08Speaker 2: a pro last night. Missed blocks all over the plate.
- 44:10Speaker 2: George Helani in pass blocking has become a liability. It
- 44:13Speaker 2: was supposed to be his strength. And what's happened to
- 44:15Speaker 2: the tight ends? They're non-existent. A.J. Barner is like he
- 44:19Speaker 2: doesn't have a uniform on. Darnold won't throw to him,
- 44:22Speaker 2: including on one of those interceptions when he was open.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I sat down and talked with the second-year tight end, A.J. Barner,
- 44:28Speaker 2: last night in the locker room in Denver. You guys
- 44:31Speaker 2: aren't used to this. What's the mood or vibe? Is
- 44:35Speaker 2: it just anger at yourself?
- 44:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:37Speaker 17: I mean, I can speak for my mood and, like,
- 44:42Speaker 17: I know the work that I'm putting in as an
- 44:44Speaker 17: individual and our team's going to continue to put in.
- 44:48Speaker 4: If we're about the things that we say that.
- 44:49Speaker 17: We're about, you've got to move forward and come together
- 44:53Speaker 17: as a team.
- 44:56Speaker 2: For you personally, there were some times the night you
- 44:57Speaker 2: were open and Sam didn't have time to get to
- 44:59Speaker 2: the ball. There were a couple times you stayed in
- 45:01Speaker 2: to pass protect. It seemed like it was a little
- 45:04Speaker 2: bit all over for you today.
- 45:06Speaker 4: How was that?
- 45:06Speaker 17: That's just the flow of the game right now. I
- 45:10Speaker 17: think It's going to start to slow down, and that
- 45:15Speaker 17: can be frustrating as a player because I know what
- 45:18Speaker 17: I'm capable of. And like I said, I know the
- 45:23Speaker 17: work that I'm putting in. I know the product that's
- 45:25Speaker 17: going to show up on the field when things start clicking.
- 45:28Speaker 4: So I have confidence in myself and the team that
- 45:31Speaker 4: it's going to get right.
- 45:34Speaker 2: You look around and go, how the hell are we 3-3?
- 45:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I mean, what can you pin it on?
- 45:39Speaker 4: Oh, man. I mean, that's what it is.
- 45:42Speaker 17: Like, I think three and three, four and three, four
- 45:46Speaker 17: and four. Like when you have the Seahawks in the schedule,
- 45:48Speaker 17: like we're still who we are. Like, I don't think
- 45:52Speaker 17: you want to see us and a lot of stuff
- 45:55Speaker 17: that we can clean up that falls in our court on.
- 45:57Speaker 17: And again, like it's the NFL, everyone's good team, but
- 46:01Speaker 17: I still think.
- 46:02Speaker 4: You have the Seahawks in the schedule. Like it's going
- 46:06Speaker 4: to be a battle.
- 46:07Speaker 2: That's the silver lining, that if you eliminate the mistakes,
- 46:09Speaker 2: the turnovers, the penalties, you probably win these three games
- 46:12Speaker 2: you've lost?
- 46:13Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:13Speaker 17: I think that's just the same story every year in
- 46:17Speaker 17: this business. Play clean football and execute and win games.
- 46:23Speaker 6: A.J.
- 46:24Speaker 2: Barner in the locker room last night in Denver. They've
- 46:26Speaker 2: got to get him the ball. When you say who's
- 46:28Speaker 2: the second receiver right now for this team, Rashid Shaheed
- 46:31Speaker 2: showed it a little bit, but they've got to get
- 46:32Speaker 2: him the ball. 4-9-4-5-1, your reaction to the Seahawks in
- 46:37Speaker 2: the locker room last night when I talked to them,
- 46:39Speaker 2: what you thought about what you just heard. Up next,
- 46:42Speaker 2: our high school football focus, our weekly feature at 11
- 46:44Speaker 2: o'clock on Fridays. The biggest game in the state this
- 46:47Speaker 2: week is O'Day and Eastside Catholic out on the plateau tonight.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Both the head coaches up next, the legendary Monte Kohler.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Jeremy Tealbar from Eastside Catholic. We'll talk to them next
- 46:58Speaker 2: in Factor Fiction 1135. Your chance to win $ 1, 000 from
- 47:02Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel coming up on a Washington
- 47:04Speaker 2: State Beef Commission football Friday on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 47:19Speaker 6: Welcome back.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre with you on a Washington State
- 47:22Speaker 2: Beef Commission Football Friday. Our high school football focus, our
- 47:27Speaker 2: weekly segment at 11 o'clock on Sunday, on Fridays. Big
- 47:32Speaker 2: game down in the south side of Puyallup and Sumner.
- 47:35Speaker 2: That's a co-headliner game here in the state. Those communities
- 47:39Speaker 2: are fired up. Thanks on the text line for, yes,
- 47:42Speaker 2: I was aware Puyallup and Sumner are playing. Two powers
- 47:45Speaker 2: down from the South Sound. Out at Hoquiam tonight, Jack Elway,
- 47:48Speaker 2: who was a quarterback at Hoquiam High School, is being
- 47:51Speaker 2: honored as a quarterback for one of the first spread
- 47:54Speaker 2: offenses back in the 40s.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Well, that's cool.
- 47:59Speaker 2: At Olympic Stadium. We've talked about Olympic Stadium. Built as
- 48:02Speaker 2: a war project. The legendary stadium for football and baseball
- 48:06Speaker 2: in Hoquiam. That's where Jack Elway is going to be
- 48:08Speaker 2: honored by the mayor. They're going to make a proclamation
- 48:10Speaker 2: calling that Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam the birth of spread offense.
- 48:14Speaker 2: That's tonight in high school football down at Hoquiam. And
- 48:17Speaker 2: on the plateau, Eastside Catholic and O'Day High School in
- 48:21Speaker 2: a battle of 3A powers from the Metro League. Rivals
- 48:25Speaker 2: that end up finding themselves in the state finals, semifinals.
- 48:30Speaker 2: And we have both coaches on the phone live on
- 48:32Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. First, O'Day High School's athletic director,
- 48:37Speaker 2: head coach since 1985, and Washington State's all-time leader in
- 48:43Speaker 2: head coaching wins, the legendary Monty Kohler on the phone
- 48:46Speaker 2: with us on a game day. Coach, I know as
- 48:48Speaker 2: a game day you have many other things to do
- 48:49Speaker 2: than talk to this clown on the radio. I appreciate
- 48:52Speaker 2: you being on the radio and talking to us on KJR.
- 48:56Speaker 4: You bet.
- 48:56Speaker 16: We appreciate what you guys do for high school football.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Thank you, sir. If I may, and ask you to
- 49:02Speaker 2: take a 30,000 foot lens on your entire career, what
- 49:05Speaker 2: is the similarities and the differences from 1985 when you
- 49:09Speaker 2: first became a high school football coach at O'Day to today?
- 49:12Speaker 2: How have you changed how you coach players? How have
- 49:15Speaker 2: players changed? Or maybe how has it stayed the same?
- 49:20Speaker 21: Well, again, I think kids are probably better now than
- 49:23Speaker 21: they were then.
- 49:25Speaker 16: You know, I'm not saying they're.
- 49:26Speaker 21: Better players, but their attention span might be a little shorter.
- 49:31Speaker 21: You know, I don't think the game has changed that much.
- 49:34Speaker 21: I mean, I think, you know, that same old idea
- 49:36Speaker 21: that you have to um, you know, build relationships with them.
- 49:40Speaker 16: You know, you can't just tell them what to do
- 49:42Speaker 16: and they'll do it. They have to trust you. And
- 49:44Speaker 16: then they'll, then you have a chance that they'll do it.
- 49:47Speaker 2: How have you evolved your schematics, your X's and O's
- 49:50Speaker 2: coach from the eighties to what, how college football plays
- 49:54Speaker 2: and what most of your kids want to go play
- 49:55Speaker 2: college football?
- 49:58Speaker 21: Well, we, uh, you know, we haven't changed, uh, defensively
- 50:01Speaker 21: we changed down then offensively again, When we first started here,
- 50:06Speaker 21: we were probably one of the, you know, we were,
- 50:08Speaker 21: in a sense, a West Coast offense, as it was
- 50:11Speaker 21: called back then, and then we kind of developed into
- 50:14Speaker 21: what we run now. We just kind of tweaked that
- 50:16Speaker 21: year in, year out, depending on the personnel. So I
- 50:20Speaker 21: guess it's always changing, but never too far from our core.
- 50:25Speaker 2: What makes this, this is Monte Kohler, the legendary coach,
- 50:28Speaker 2: the all-time leader in coaching wins in high school football
- 50:31Speaker 2: in Washington, honored to have him on the show. Greg
- 50:34Speaker 2: Bell Show with Jessamyn McIntyre, 93.3 KJRFM. The Seaside Catholic Rivalry,
- 50:39Speaker 2: you guys both go deep, not just in the Metro.
- 50:42Speaker 2: You go out of the Metro League deep into the
- 50:43Speaker 2: state championship playoffs. What makes this rivalry so special? The
- 50:47Speaker 2: kids know each other, seven-on-seven camps, recruiting trails, growing up.
- 50:52Speaker 2: What makes this rivalry unique?
- 50:56Speaker 21: Well, I think it brings a lot of excitement and
- 50:58Speaker 21: energy to both communities. You know, I guess I think it's–
- 51:04Speaker 21: it's great because it, it makes, I think both teams better. Uh,
- 51:09Speaker 21: it's one, it's one of those, you know, that, uh,
- 51:11Speaker 21: you have to, you know, really prepare for, you really
- 51:15Speaker 21: have to, uh, have your kids in the right mindset.
- 51:19Speaker 21: So I just think it makes, uh, your teams better. And, uh, I, again,
- 51:26Speaker 21: I think, uh, there's always a chance that we're going
- 51:28Speaker 21: to play again.
- 51:29Speaker 16: So this one just kind of, it's not a free one,
- 51:31Speaker 16: but it's one to really see where you're at.
- 51:33Speaker 21: Um, you know, and kind of find your weaknesses and
- 51:37Speaker 21: maybe some of your strengths as well.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Coach Jeremy Tealbar of Eastside Catholic told us that his
- 51:42Speaker 2: starters haven't played a full game yet or even had
- 51:44Speaker 2: to punt because the games have been so lopsided. What
- 51:47Speaker 2: stands out to you about Eastside Catholic? How are you
- 51:50Speaker 2: going to make them uncomfortable? If O'Day's playing their game tonight,
- 51:53Speaker 2: what are you going to do?
- 51:56Speaker 21: Well, again, we have to, I mean, obviously they're really
- 51:59Speaker 21: good on both sides of the ball.
- 52:01Speaker 16: They're dangerous on offense. Uh, They've got some quarterbacks playing
- 52:06Speaker 16: really well.
- 52:06Speaker 4: They've got some kids that can.
- 52:08Speaker 22: Run and catch.
- 52:10Speaker 16: So, you know, we've got to eliminate big plays.
- 52:12Speaker 22: But, you know, again, I don't know the snap, but
- 52:15Speaker 22: it seems like that quarterback's got a ton of touchdowns
- 52:18Speaker 22: already and a short amount of throws.
- 52:20Speaker 6: So they've got a.
- 52:21Speaker 4: Lot of big plays there.
- 52:22Speaker 22: But then, you know, if you loosen the box too much,
- 52:25Speaker 22: they're pretty capable of running it.
- 52:28Speaker 4: Again, offensively, You know, we've got to get first downs.
- 52:31Speaker 16: You know, take our shots.
- 52:32Speaker 22: We have a kid that can throw it down, some
- 52:34Speaker 22: kids that can go and get it. So I'm assuming
- 52:39Speaker 22: that both teams will probably be pretty comparable in the
- 52:43Speaker 22: run-pass percentage. You know, I think they're going to make turnovers,
- 52:48Speaker 22: and that's always a big.
- 52:49Speaker 6: Part of the big game.
- 52:51Speaker 2: This is Monty Kohler, a little bit of static on
- 52:53Speaker 2: the line, but Monty Kohler, the head coach and athletic
- 52:56Speaker 2: director of Day High School, the defending state 3A champions,
- 52:59Speaker 2: playing Eastside Catholic tonight at a big showdown in Washington
- 53:01Speaker 2: State high school football here on 93.3 KJR FM. I
- 53:03Speaker 2: don't know if you, you probably don't remember, but on
- 53:08Speaker 2: the field at Husky Stadium after you won the state
- 53:10Speaker 2: championship over Bellevue, I asked you live on the air
- 53:13Speaker 2: on KJR, if you would be done coaching and what
- 53:16Speaker 2: keeps you coming back and you say, Oh, I'm not,
- 53:18Speaker 2: I don't think I'm done. And you did come back
- 53:20Speaker 2: obviously for another season. What keeps you coming back coach?
- 53:24Speaker 21: Um, you know, I really have, we have great students. Uh,
- 53:28Speaker 21: I mean, and it's fun to be in, uh, this
- 53:31Speaker 21: place is pretty special. Obviously I've been here a long
- 53:33Speaker 21: time and, you know, uh, the environment, the all boys environment,
- 53:37Speaker 21: there's this, you know, there's special energy that, uh, is
- 53:41Speaker 21: pretty fun and it's beyond what we do in athletics
- 53:46Speaker 21: it's just uh what the kids and what they bring
- 53:48Speaker 21: to the school and and then uh you know because
- 53:51Speaker 21: they're they're hungry they're they're.
- 53:53Speaker 16: Here to learn and get better.
- 53:55Speaker 21: And hopefully we can i can still play a part
- 53:58Speaker 21: in that so that's probably them and you know i've
- 54:01Speaker 21: got great coaches and great principal and all those kind
- 54:03Speaker 21: of things that make my job easy.
- 54:06Speaker 7: So Coach brings me back.
- 54:08Speaker 2: Excuse me, Coach Kohler, I do have to ask, a
- 54:11Speaker 2: lot of listeners ask me, what would you feel about
- 54:14Speaker 2: a private school league? You, an Eastside Catholic, maybe, and
- 54:19Speaker 2: it would have to be geographically, so Bellarmine perhaps, Archbishop
- 54:22Speaker 2: Murphy if they moved up in class, but for the
- 54:24Speaker 2: private schools to play in their own league, is that
- 54:27Speaker 2: something you would ever, I know you've heard that before
- 54:29Speaker 2: from people who think that's a good idea in Washington.
- 54:32Speaker 2: What would you think of that?
- 54:35Speaker 16: I mean, I don't think it serves the student population.
- 54:38Speaker 21: I don't think it'd be good for the state of
- 54:39Speaker 21: Washington and high school football. You know, I think there
- 54:44Speaker 21: are other alternatives to maybe get to what they're trying
- 54:49Speaker 21: to get to.
- 54:49Speaker 16: And that's some kind of balance and equity.
- 54:53Speaker 21: But I think a private school, you know, just if
- 54:57Speaker 21: it was a league, that's one thing. But if it
- 54:59Speaker 21: meant a private school state championship, and not part of
- 55:02Speaker 21: the WIAA, I think that would be detrimental to high
- 55:07Speaker 21: school football in the state of Washington.
- 55:10Speaker 2: What are some of those alternatives you mentioned, if you
- 55:12Speaker 2: were trying to get equity, as you see it?
- 55:16Speaker 21: Well, I think there's maybe even an amendment out there now.
- 55:19Speaker 21: I don't know if it'll pass, but it was something
- 55:21Speaker 21: along the lines of basically ceding the state tournament.
- 55:25Speaker 4: So....
- 55:27Speaker 16: So like I think Arizona does it, California maybe used
- 55:31Speaker 16: to do it.
- 55:32Speaker 21: So at the end of the year, the tournament, so
- 55:35Speaker 21: you could have Tumwater, Eastside, O'Day, Puyallup, Sumner all in
- 55:40Speaker 21: the tournament, the.
- 55:42Speaker 16: Open division or whatever you call it. So that's one alternative.
- 55:46Speaker 2: Coach Monty Kohler, I know you're busy at school. You've
- 55:49Speaker 2: got a game. You've got a road trip. You've got
- 55:50Speaker 2: to get kids on a bus and get out to
- 55:52Speaker 2: the east side. Appreciate you joining us. Honored to have
- 55:54Speaker 2: you on the show. And thanks for all you do
- 55:56Speaker 2: from 1985 for young student-athletes in our state. Thanks for everything, Coach.
- 56:02Speaker 16: I sure appreciate you guys, and thanks all of you.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Monty Kohler, the all-time winningest coach in high school football
- 56:09Speaker 2: in Washington from O'Day High School. He's playing east side Catholic.
- 56:13Speaker 2: The Crusaders are rolling. Jeremy Tealbar, lefty side Catholic as
- 56:19Speaker 2: the long-time coach, came back. And now he's back with
- 56:22Speaker 2: another powerhouse team. He tells us, if it's true, Coach Tealbar,
- 56:27Speaker 2: that you have not punted with your starters this year.
- 56:29Speaker 2: And they haven't even finished a game yet. I have
- 56:31Speaker 2: a feeling you might punt tonight and you might finish
- 56:33Speaker 2: a game against O'Day. Thanks for coming on. And how
- 56:37Speaker 2: is this return? See, what brought you back, I guess,
- 56:39Speaker 2: is the first question. You know, thanks for having me.
- 56:42Speaker 6: I appreciate it a ton, Greg, and what you're doing
- 56:45Speaker 6: and getting some exposure to our kids and our place. Gosh,
- 56:49Speaker 6: I'm happy to be back. You know, fired up to
- 56:53Speaker 6: be back on the plateau. I was in Sandpoint, Idaho.
- 56:56Speaker 6: Mama got sick, had to go take care of her
- 56:58Speaker 6: and the business and the family business.
- 57:01Speaker 4: And, you know.
- 57:04Speaker 2: I don't know what.
- 57:05Speaker 6: Happened when I was gone, to be honest with you.
- 57:07Speaker 4: I didn't come back.
- 57:08Speaker 6: I did touch base with Dom from time to time
- 57:11Speaker 6: and Stacey Stout, our athletic director. But no, it ended
- 57:17Speaker 6: the way it did with Dom and his reign. And
- 57:19Speaker 6: then I got a call saying, hey, would you be
- 57:21Speaker 6: interested in coming back? And I was in Sandpoint, Idaho,
- 57:23Speaker 6: Coeur d'Alene area. And I said, gosh, I never even
- 57:28Speaker 6: thought about it. And But what's weird is Monty and
- 57:31Speaker 6: I had had conversations while I was gone. For some reason,
- 57:35Speaker 6: I kept telling him, hey, we got the book of O'Day,
- 57:40Speaker 6: our long, long, massive scouting plan of O'Day, which– In
- 57:45Speaker 6: the state of Washington, when you're playing Bellevue, which is
- 57:48Speaker 6: complicated and has a basic offense in regards to the
- 57:53Speaker 6: wing T and how they play the wing T and
- 57:55Speaker 6: then Monty's offense and his veer eye formation and then
- 57:59Speaker 6: his caveats on top of that. you get pretty used
- 58:02Speaker 6: to the plan that you're going to be putting in
- 58:05Speaker 6: and how to attack them and how not to attack them.
- 58:08Speaker 2: And Monty was like, hey, why don't.
- 58:09Speaker 6: You ship that folder over to me?
- 58:11Speaker 4: And for some reason, I never shipped.
- 58:12Speaker 2: It over to him. I was like, no.
- 58:14Speaker 6: For some reason, I don't know. Maybe something in the
- 58:17Speaker 6: back of my head was like, hey, maybe... Maybe this
- 58:20Speaker 6: guy and I are going to face off one more time.
- 58:22Speaker 6: Maybe this guy, this guy and I, and his rivalry
- 58:24Speaker 6: and this great rivalry, probably the best rivalry in the
- 58:27Speaker 6: state of Washington. And maybe we're going to face off
- 58:29Speaker 6: one more time. And I got a call from, from
- 58:31Speaker 6: the athletic director here.
- 58:32Speaker 4: He's a Catholic.
- 58:33Speaker 6: And he said, are you interested? And I looked at
- 58:36Speaker 6: my wife and I said, Hey, we're.
- 58:37Speaker 4: In North Idaho.
- 58:38Speaker 6: We're some people call us having, you know, kind of
- 58:41Speaker 6: a dream living the dream ish. And I said, do
- 58:45Speaker 6: we want to throw ourselves back in that fold? And
- 58:47Speaker 6: then to be frank, You know, I looked at my
- 58:49Speaker 6: two kids and I didn't have kids last time I
- 58:52Speaker 6: was here.
- 58:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 58:53Speaker 6: At least that were school age kids. And I got
- 58:56Speaker 6: a seven-year-old boy. His name is Tanyan Decker Fieldball. That's TDT.
- 59:00Speaker 6: And then I've got an 11-year-old girl, Kate Adeline Fieldball.
- 59:03Speaker 6: That's Kat for Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire. And,
- 59:08Speaker 6: you know, she's 11. And I know what Eastside Catholic is.
- 59:13Speaker 6: And I know how beautiful our community is and how
- 59:16Speaker 6: beautiful and the outcomes of our kids and what they learn, mindfulness, mind, body,
- 59:22Speaker 6: and soul when they're here and the experience they have
- 59:26Speaker 6: in this bubble of of a world that is, that
- 59:30Speaker 6: is so tough on kids in micro traumas with social
- 59:33Speaker 6: media and Instagram, Instagram, Instagram, and, and Snapchat.
- 59:37Speaker 4: Snapchat, Twitter.
- 59:38Speaker 6: And I looked at myself and I was, how do
- 59:40Speaker 6: I as a father do the one job I have,
- 59:42Speaker 6: which is to keep them safe. And I'm like, if
- 59:45Speaker 6: I have an opportunity to go back to that beautiful place,
- 59:48Speaker 6: that place on the plateau, that, that bubble of, of
- 59:51Speaker 6: that melting pot, but a bubble of, where you get
- 59:54Speaker 6: to see the real world and you get to see
- 59:56Speaker 6: multicultural and you get to see all the different races
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: and communities, socioeconomic protected in this bubble in the plateau.
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: How can I say no? And, you know, I got
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: the opportunity. I had to go through the whole process.
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: I was, you know, I was a four time state
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: champion here and and and.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: And had to go through the whole process. Back of
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: the line.
- 1:00:18Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: Back of the line.
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: Hey, Jeremy, you ain't, you don't got a front row seat.
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: Um, no, don't get me wrong.
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: I had a lot of community members helping me and, and, uh,
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: a lot of people in support and, um, excited to
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: be back, uh, excited for this game, excited for our kids.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Um, you know, building it back.
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: It's, it, there's a lot of things have changed since
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: I've been gone. I mean, COVID happened. Um, you know,
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: a lot of, a lot of heartbreaking things happened while
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: I was gone, um, in regards to what happened with
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: kids and, and, you know, NIL happened while I was
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: gone and, and all sorts of recruiting things and, and
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: the acceleration of, um, you know, all the seven on
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: seven stuff and five on five and, um, lots of
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: street agents and, and lots of people involved in youth sports. And, um,
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: it's fun to be back and try to, um, stick
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: with our core values and our traditions and be as
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: elite as we possibly can in this area while the
- 1:01:15Speaker 6: world is going crazy around us and to keep swinging
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: the hammer and do the next right thing for our
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: program and for our kids and for our school. It's
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: just a beautiful place, man, and it's hard to explain
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: if you haven't been up here or you haven't really
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: felt the EC family. We're going against a brotherhood tonight,
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: our family versus their brotherhood.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: It's well-known.
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: And I'm excited to see the outcomes.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: Coach, my name is Jessamyn McIntyre. My father has been
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: a coach my entire life. So I hear everything. He
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: has gone through the football, high school football level all
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: the way through college for literally my entire life. And
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: everything that you're saying. is a breath of fresh air
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: when it comes to the direction that we're seeing college
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: football go specifically. And I'm wondering how far down it
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: will go as it seems to have gone professionalizing every
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: single level.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: How do you think that what you're.
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: Saying, your passion, do you think there's enough people out
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: there that can keep it what it is, the sanctity
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: of just football family?
- 1:02:19Speaker 6: Well, I think our culture depends on it. You know,
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: I hate to say that because there's a lot of
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: people out there that are going to be like, well,
- 1:02:25Speaker 6: it's just football. It's not really just football. It's growing
- 1:02:30Speaker 6: kids up, adversity, grit, determination, culture. You know, right now
- 1:02:37Speaker 6: we're talking about football. are saying this year is rad, respect, accountability,
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: and discipline. It comes from the bike movie, Radden, in
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: the 1980s. I'm a 1980s kid.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: That is a really good throwback.
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a throwback deal.
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: And those core values and skills in order to teach kids,
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: no matter what math, science, reading, English, that is what
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: gets blue-collar people and blue-collar kids and families together in
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: hard times.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: And keeping.
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: with traditions of what we love and respect. And I
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: don't love the way college football is going. I don't
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: love the way high school football is going necessarily. And,
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: you know, I think if you just stick with your
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: core values, you continue to have relationships at a high level.
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: You keep trying to teach and educate. In the end,
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: the kids are experiencing, here you say Catholic forever moments.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: We base our, our, our, Our whole.
- 1:03:35Speaker 6: Program, faith, faith in each other, faith in God, faith
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: in what we're doing, faith in you're here for a reason. Family,
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: family together, family stays. You don't got to like everybody
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: in your family. Finish what you do. Finish every single rep.
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: Finish every single academic assignment.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Your brand matters.
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: Finish this thing. And then forever moments. And some of
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: those moments are state titles. Some of those moments are losses.
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: Some of those moments are what we did in our
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: first three days, which was to try to find our culture,
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: find our kids and where we at. Instead of practicing
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: the first three days of this year, we went to camp.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: We call it C4.
- 1:04:09Speaker 6: It's in CISPUS.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: It's in Blaine, Washington.
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: No cell phones, three days of retreat, leadership camp, getting
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: to know each other, looking each other in the eye,
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: having conversations, cell phones away and trying to find this
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: unique thing that is a family in football that is
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: so special and so missed in this world. And I think,
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: you know, somebody is going to have to stand, stand
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: up and say, enough is enough. You know, we got to,
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: we got to pay the players.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: There's no doubt.
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: They got to get what, what, what's earned them, but
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: we got to put some limits on this. I'm with
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: Nick Saban in regards to helping this thing along and,
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: and making their, their B limits within the thing within
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: recruiting or admissions or, or NIL and, You know, there
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: is a sanctity to high school football that has to
- 1:04:59Speaker 6: be saved because of how kids need to have great
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: determination when they get out in the real world. That's
- 1:05:06Speaker 6: not going away. That's never going to go away, at
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: least while I'm alive.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Jeremy Tilbar is the head coach at Eastside Catholic. They
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: play O'Day tonight in our high school football-focused showcase game.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: I'd play for you, man.
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: I'd play for you.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: You run through a wall for Jeremy Tilbar. Coach, real quickly,
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: you said there are things about high school football that
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: you don't like. If you could be the czar of
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: the WIAA or Washington State Athletics, what would you fix
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: in high school football in our state?
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: There are so many things that are broken. It's not
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: necessarily the WIAA. It's the whole educational process in regards
- 1:05:43Speaker 6: to funding and understanding how important educational athletics is to us.
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: the culture of our country, of our state, of our world.
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: And when you're, you know, we don't fund, the public
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: schools don't fund it at the level of a private school.
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: You know, they don't, you know, they got kids coming
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: in for free. They don't have to market brand and
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: communicate to get kids and parents and people understanding why,
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: you know, one place has got a little bit better
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: than another place. They, you know, the lack, the lack
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: of basic attitude of, Just the overall society in regards
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: to funding these important programs. Don't get me wrong, math, science, reading,
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: the academic pieces of that are so critical, but culture, grit, determination, family, team, love, togetherness, experience.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: you know, some of these things that are out there,
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: I think these public schools would be phenomenal if they
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: had the support and the funding of the administration. I mean,
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: and you see that throughout the state. And I was
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: in North Idaho for six years as the offensive coordinator
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: at Sandpoint. And you see it in public education at
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: Sandpoint High School. And you see it all throughout. If
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: a public school is down, it's probably from the superintendent
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: and probably from a principal that has some agenda that
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: that I don't know how that could be good for kids.
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: So I don't necessarily put it all on WIA. I
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: put it all on, hey, we as a society need
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: to understand that athletics and extracurriculars are extremely important for
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: confidence in kids, especially with the onslaught right now of
- 1:07:24Speaker 6: what's going on with social media and the micro traumas
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: that are being caused there. And, you know, I mean,
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: I come from a, you know, my family business is
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: a residential treatment center for at-risk girls who have massive traumas.
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: And so you see how society is breaking down, and
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: it's because they look at their phones and they're getting
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: made fun of. All the silent bullying, harassment, and intimidation.
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: How do you counter that? You do that with confidence building.
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: You do that through them buying in, pouring into something
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: that they risk at other than at-risk behaviors. You pour
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: it into, hey, I'm going to be in the play.
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: I'm going to risk making a fool of myself at
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: the play or I'm going to go play football because
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: it's a grind and I know it's a team that
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: loves each other. I know they're going to do fun
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: things and I have this forever moment in these experiences.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: And I think we all have to come together and
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: say this is very important. We need to fund this.
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: We need to help get athletic directors full-time pay.
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: We need to get coaches more pay.
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: Because it's a grind, and it's a lot of hard work.
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: If not, the inequity is going to be what you
- 1:08:26Speaker 6: see right now at times. You have massive public school
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: programs with massive donor bases helping them.
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: You have big.
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: Private schools that understand the vision of their place, and
- 1:08:40Speaker 6: they have– They have the means to be able to
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: attract elite coaches and elite systems and market brand and
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: communicate to families. And you be that family and look
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: around the block. I do it all the time because,
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: you know, we get admissions here. And I said, well,
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: where else are you going.
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: To go than here? Right, right.
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: Are we competing against? Other privates? Kind of.
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: But this place is real special.
- 1:09:11Speaker 6: I think it's an overall cultural society problem and I
- 1:09:16Speaker 6: don't think the WI can fix it. I think this
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: open division plan is is good, but really the roots
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: of the problem, and I think that WI would say this,
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: is we just need all our programs to be competitive
- 1:09:25Speaker 6: and compete. And some people would say, well, you can't
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: because you can't recruit from a 50-mile radius or admissions
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: from a 50-mile radius, whatever you want to call it.
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: And it's like, well, hold on. There's been some pretty
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: good public schools that have done real well in the area.
- 1:09:41Speaker 6: What are they doing? Well, they have massive funding, massive
- 1:09:43Speaker 6: booster clubs. They create an amazing experience for the kids,
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: and they keep their kids. And That doesn't mean the
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: privates won't be successful. We're going to have some success
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: here and there, but obviously we have down years and
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: up years. Right now, we're having one of those right now.
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: I think we're in an.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: Up year for Eastside Catholic.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: It'll continue tonight on the plateau. O'Day and Eastside Catholic. Coach,
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: appreciate you taking a big picture view on a game day.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I know you're a busy man. Coach, Jeremy Tealbar, Eastside Catholic.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: Thanks for all you do for athletics and for young people.
- 1:10:14Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: No problem. Thanks, Jeremy Tealbar, Eastside Catholic. Against O'Day tonight,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: Puyallup and Sumner. There's so much I want to get to,
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: and we've got to get to break, but there's a
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: game tonight that's unique. Down in Renton, Hazen against Thomas Beamer.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about that coming out of the break.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: It's the absolute other end of the spectrum of what
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: we're talking about with O'Day and Eastside Catholic. 1135 factor
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: fiction chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: and Hotel on 93.3 KJRFM. We're set to go.
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: Glad you're with us.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction is on.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Ah, yeah, you knew we're coming back to this.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: Couldn't help myself.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: Thank you, Jessamyn. The Army team, the pride and dream
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: of every heart and gray. They're back home at West
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Point on the banks of the Hudson.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: Give your back. The window's open.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: Army hosting Florida Atlantic. FAU is 4-1. The one loss
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: they got obliterated by Florida. Florida Atlantic scores a lot
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: of points. But this is a beating. Texas Southern, Louisiana Monroe,
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Florida International, and Navy. And we all know Navy sucks.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Army's coming up. A bounce-back win over Tulane at the
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: buzzer last week. A league game here for the Black
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Knights in the American Conference. My Black Knights are favored
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: by 2.5. Guess what I'm going to do? Army minus
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: 2.5 at home against Florida Atlantic. I say the Cadets
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: will win by three or more points. If you agree,
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: text FACT to 49451. If you disagree and don't want
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000, text FICTION to 49451. If you get
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: that right, you'll be nandered in a drawing for Monday
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000 from Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Again,
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Army minus two and a half at home over Florida Atlantic.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: I think they're going to win by three or more.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: If you want to win $ 1, 000, text FACT to 49451.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: If you don't, text FICTION to 49451. You got 12 minutes,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: and then that's the last one of the week because
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Ian Furness is going to be scatting at 1 o'clock
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: because we have the Husky pregame show from West Lafayette
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: heading into Washington-Purdue at 5 p.m. kickoff in a Big
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: Ten game right here live on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: Back-to-back Friday games.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: I think it's cool. Infringing on the high schools. Hey,
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: one thing about the high schools I wanted to bring up.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: I totally messed up Todd Beamer High School's name in
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: Federal Way. Of course it's Todd Beamer. He's a national hero.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: For those of you who have not been around since
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: 2001 or don't know the story, the high school in
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: Federal Way is named after Todd Beamer, a hero who
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: was a passenger on Flight 93 that U-turned over Ohio,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: went right over my house in Ohio in 2001 and
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: was headed for Washington, D.C. and was going to be
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: another suicide jet. And Todd Beamer was one of the
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: leaders of the passenger uprising that quelled the terrorists who
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: had stormed the cockpit and taken over control of the plane.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: The passengers, Todd Beamer led the passengers driving that plane
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: into the ground and sacrificing all of those lives so
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: that that plane didn't hit the Capitol or the White
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: House or anywhere in Metro Washington, D.C. that it was
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: destined for on September 11, 2001.
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: Todd Beamer.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Of course. And thank you for the text line for
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: correcting me on that. That's a rotta worth pointing out.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: And I'm glad you did that. Todd Beamer High School tonight.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: Todd Beamer High School halted its season. My former News
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: Tribune colleague, John Manley, wrote a story about how they
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: had so many injuries. They had some lopsided losses. And
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Todd Beamer decided to pull the plug on the season
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: for the safety of their players. They eliminated numbers. This
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: is the have-nots side of high school football. We just
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: talked to the haves, and I get it. I hear
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: it on the text line, the Silver Spoons, O'Day High School,
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: and Eastside Catholic. Yes, and you are right. They are
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: the upper-crust haves. The have-nots, Todd Beamer ended their season
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: because they didn't have enough players and they got hurt.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Hazen ended its season after what I was told, the
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: coaching staff leaving right before the season began, and then
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: Hazen was getting crushed down in the Renton area of school.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: And they ended their season. Well, tonight, guess what? Todd
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: Beamer and Hazen are playing each other. They're restarting their
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: season for this game tonight, a varsity game at Renton
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Memorial Stadium. Our son, Eric Bell, who I got into
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: officiating last year in the Pacific Northwest Football Association, PNFOA.com,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: if you want to join. Eric's reffering that game tonight.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: He's going to be on the game tonight. as the
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: line judge at Rent Memorial Stadium for Todd Beamer versus Hazen.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: A really unique football game tonight for those kids who
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: didn't think they'd ever have another chance to play. Well,
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: tonight they do. And they're going to play at 7
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: o'clock at Rent Memorial Stadium.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: One more time, can we get your pick? Because I
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: do have an announcement after this.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: Go for it.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Factor Fiction pick is Army. My Black Knights minus two
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: and a half at home over Florida Atlantic in an
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: American Conference game. I think they're going to win by
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: three or more if you believe that. Text FACTA49451. If
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: you disagree, text FICTION to 49451. You have about nine minutes.
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: Well, our Week 5 Factor Fiction winner is Roger Chrisman,
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: who won on guess who, but none other than the
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: one Greg Bell picked. It was a fact on Greg's pick,
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: Detroit minus five and a half at Arizona. So that
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: was a week five pick, and I will continue getting
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: these out.
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: Please pick up your phone, by the way.
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: If you are someone who enters this contest, Anders is
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: the one that makes these calls, and sometimes he has
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: to wait a couple days to hear back. But that's $ 1, 000,
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: so congratulations, Roger.
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: And that was your pick. So, Greg, you're just, like,
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: giving out cash.
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: I do.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: That's what I say. If you want to win $ 1, 000,
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: text fact.
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: I think our show's doing pretty good because I got
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: a fiction winner.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: I think we're crushing it.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: I know. 253 says, thank you very much for asking
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: the obvious question of private schools in their own league.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Their recruiting abilities versus public schools has created major inequities.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: Thanks again.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: And you are absolutely right. And credit to Monty Kohler
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: for recognizing that. Jeremy Tealbar of Eastside Catholic also recognized
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: the inequities that have come up in athletics because of
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: the advantage private schools have. Up next, Ian Furneska tells
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: us what he's got in his hour. He's probably got
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: his feet up. He might be doing it from his
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: back deck or something. I don't know.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: I mean, I would.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Why not?
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: I'd have a Negroni in my hand.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: He may do that, too. We don't know. And then
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: at 1 o'clock, the Husky Honks have the Husky tailgate
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: show from Dave Softy Mallers in West Lafayette, Indiana. Why?
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Because Washington and Purdue is going to be on this
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: radio station live college football at 5 p.m. on a
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Washington State Beef Commission football Friday on 93.3 KJRF. Welcome
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: back to Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday that has
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: been packed. I mean packed. We had Monty Kohler, the
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: all-time leading Washington State coaching leader. We had his opponent tonight,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: Eastside Catholic. O'Day High School is going to play Eastside Catholic.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Jeremy Teelbar was on talking about big picture stuff and
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: how youth and his leadership of youth. We had the
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Kraken game last night. We had the Seahawks. We talked,
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: you heard live from Mike McDonald at the top of
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: the show and the news of the day from the Seahawks.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: They are sticking with Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold is the
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, including in nine days
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: against Kansas City. We got the Huskies playing Purdue at
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: 5 o'clock. We got the Cougs playing tomorrow down in Corvallis.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: And we have interchangeable Ian, the two-sport guy who watches
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: two games at one time in two different sports. Ian Furness.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: How did that go? It was hard cracking in the, well,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: the cracking started at what? Four 30 Tampa Bay.
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: Oh, four.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: Oh, great.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: So they were what? In the second period when the
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Seahawks kicked.
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: Off, uh, we had, yeah, I'm just trying to think
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: first intermission was over.
- 1:18:33Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: Early second period. And so I had one eye on
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: that one eye on the cracking and then they finished and, uh,
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: I jumped in the car and jumped on the Westwood
- 1:18:45Speaker 7: One broadcast, and it was sounding dire.
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: It looked dire.
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: It had to look very dire, and then I got home.
- 1:18:54Speaker 7: Then I was like, I had this, like, what do
- 1:18:57Speaker 7: I do thing, because I'm driving along, and I don't
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: know who the two guys on Westwood One were yesterday.
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: They were guys, Ryan, somebody who was a former offensive lineman,
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: and I don't know who they played, but they do
- 1:19:07Speaker 7: a great job. And I'm listening to it. It's like, oh,
- 1:19:09Speaker 7: wait a second, two-point conversion. I'm just pulling on the
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: Maple Valley Highway as they're getting the two. And I said,
- 1:19:15Speaker 7: should I just pull into, like, the Classic? There's a
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: sports bar there. Or the Red Dog. No, I'm going
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: to get home because I think my son's there. And then,
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: you know, then it looked like he throws the interception
- 1:19:26Speaker 7: in regulation. Well, they're going to lose anyway. And then
- 1:19:29Speaker 7: all of a sudden, by the time I'm up once,
- 1:19:31Speaker 7: I'm almost in Maple Valley. they kicked the field goal
- 1:19:33Speaker 7: to tie it. I'm like, damn, they're going overtime. Should
- 1:19:35Speaker 7: I jump into a vibe and watch the, like the
- 1:19:36Speaker 7: overtime there? Cause I'm right there. No, I'm going to
- 1:19:38Speaker 7: get home, fly into my house, right. As they're starting
- 1:19:41Speaker 7: their first drive in overtime, the ill-fated drive. And, uh,
- 1:19:44Speaker 7: and then my son wasn't even here. He's with somebody
- 1:19:46Speaker 7: who's watching it somewhere else. So I watched it there.
- 1:19:48Speaker 7: So yeah, it was, I had quite the viewing experience yesterday,
- 1:19:51Speaker 7: I'll tell you that.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: That's for sure.
- 1:19:53Speaker 7: I should have stayed in the car because that was
- 1:19:55Speaker 7: better luck, apparently. Yeah, right.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: Or just kept in the car in the driveway. We
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: all remember Matt. I was in Green Bay for Madhouse,
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: but we won the ball and we're going to score
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: in the playoff game against Green Bay. And how that
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: ranks in infamous passes in Seahawks history. But I'm talking
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: about worst decisions. I mean, Hasselbeck just got picked. A
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: guy jumped an out route and But last night, just
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: for the decision, can you think of a worse throw
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: at a worse time by a quarterback?
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: No, that's about it. I mean, there has to have
- 1:20:28Speaker 7: been some. I don't want to go to college.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: We've also seen Stan Gelbaugh and Dan McGuire in this town.
- 1:20:36Speaker 7: I think of the famous Brett Favre with Minnesota, Paul
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: Allen saying, you know, this isn't Green Bay or this
- 1:20:43Speaker 7: isn't New York or whatever the heck it was. I mean,
- 1:20:45Speaker 7: all they had to do was keep the ball and
- 1:20:46Speaker 7: they're going to the Super Bowl, right?
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: So there was that with Favre.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: But I mean, in Seahawks history.
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: No.
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: No.
- 1:20:53Speaker 7: I do remember this. In Pete's first year, I believe
- 1:20:58Speaker 7: it was.
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: Tavares.
- 1:20:59Speaker 7: And, well, remember Matt was the quarterback, right?
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: Oh, that's right.
- 1:21:03Speaker 7: But he was banged up a little bit. That's right.
- 1:21:06Speaker 7: And it was one of the first– that was the
- 1:21:08Speaker 7: first year I was covering the team for Fox. And
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: we're down at Candlestick Park, and we're doing live shots.
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: We're running back and forth between getting players and going
- 1:21:16Speaker 7: to the press conference. And there were questions about Matt.
- 1:21:19Speaker 7: And I ran literally to the press area, and I'm like,
- 1:21:23Speaker 7: all right, I'm going to ask. And I just said, hey,
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: is there any chance that you would, you know, look
- 1:21:26Speaker 7: to switch quarterbacks? And Pete looked at me with the
- 1:21:30Speaker 7: level of disdain I've never felt in my life in
- 1:21:33Speaker 7: a press conference and just like kind of, you know,
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: and Pete was always very diplomatic how he answered questions, right?
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: And he looked at me like it was the dumbest
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: question ever. And why would you ask that? Blah, blah, blah.
- 1:21:45Speaker 7: And he didn't say it that way, but he didn't
- 1:21:48Speaker 7: like it.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: I'm glad you brought that up.
- 1:21:51Speaker 7: It was a legitimate question. I felt like it had
- 1:21:53Speaker 7: to be asked.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: I'm glad you brought that up because I think you
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: and a couple others were intimating that we may ask
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: last night, McDonald, that question. But I made the calculus
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: that you don't ask that question after a game. That's
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: a day after or a couple days after because– Of
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: course the message he's going to send to the locker
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: room is he's our guy.
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: Before they've assessed anything. I think every coach is different. And,
- 1:22:17Speaker 7: you know, Pete had changed– here's why I asked it
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: that night. A, I thought it had to be asked.
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: And I thought it was– someone had to ask it,
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: and I did. And two, Pete had had– at USC,
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: he would do that.
- 1:22:30Speaker 19: Right.
- 1:22:31Speaker 7: I mean, now at USC, you've got two five stars
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: on the bench. So it's right. But he had done
- 1:22:35Speaker 7: that at USC. And that's what, you know, I mean,
- 1:22:38Speaker 7: I had in my ear, I had an IFB in
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: my ear. And that's what the postgame was, is, you know,
- 1:22:41Speaker 7: what are they going to do? You know what? I'll
- 1:22:43Speaker 7: take the bullet and and pay the price later. And
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: I remember I kind of pulled him aside later on.
- 1:22:48Speaker 7: And he's like, no, he goes, I get it.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: He goes, I wasn't going to.
- 1:22:51Speaker 7: And he kind of said what you just said. He
- 1:22:52Speaker 7: was I wasn't going to say that after the game.
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: even if I was going to do it. And we're
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: going to play the audio from you and me specifically
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: today in McDonald's press availability. We'll do that in the
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: noon hour, right? Probably about 12, 10 or so.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: And, of course, we're forgetting the Russell Wilson interception at
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: the one-yard line for the worst pass in CX's history.
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: Well, yeah. There's that.
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: Yeah, there is that.
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: That's like a PTSD thing.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. The text line's blown up going, are
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: you kidding me? Yes, I'm kidding you. Yes, that's the
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: worst one of them. I try to put.
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: That on my mind.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: Danny O'Neal and?
- 1:23:27Speaker 7: No, Danny O'Neal. We have a one-hour show. We're at
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: a wind sprint today. We're at an absolute wind sprint.
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: I do have some info on the Sonic situation that's
- 1:23:35Speaker 7: blowing up as well.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: Yes, it is.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: I'll get into that.
- 1:23:37Speaker 7: I'll explain what we're dealing with here.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: The NBA, man.
- 1:23:42Speaker 7: It's something else, isn't it? So I'll get to that.
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: I will get to that. We'll get to the audio
- 1:23:46Speaker 7: from Mike McDonald today and hear what you and I
- 1:23:49Speaker 7: asked as we tried to three or four of us
- 1:23:52Speaker 7: tried to spin it around in different directions as best
- 1:23:55Speaker 7: we could and uh you'll hear mcdonald's i thought mcdonald
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: was great today by the way i thought he handled
- 1:24:01Speaker 7: it perfectly today um and we'll hear his responses coming
- 1:24:05Speaker 7: up i know a lot of people were like down
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: on mike mcdonald guys he won a super bowl uh
- 1:24:08Speaker 7: let's relax eight months ago but there's a reality of
- 1:24:11Speaker 7: the situation where they're at and we'll talk about that
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: as well and we'll take talkbacks and uh And Texas
