Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, Luna is here with me. Luna: Hey hey! I'm so ready for today. And you know what, Lucas? I've been practicing our past episodes. Lucas: I love to hear that. And today, we're going to learn something you'll use literally every time someone asks what you're up to. Luna: Ooh, tell me more. Lucas: How to say 'I'm learning Amharic.' In Amharic: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Luna: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Say it slow? Lucas: Sure. The first part is 'Amharic,' the second part means 'I am learning.' Luna: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. I can do this. Lucas: Perfect. Now try: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Luna: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. That feels good. Lucas: Awesome. Now, if someone asks if you know Amharic, you can say: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. That means 'I know a little.' Luna: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. So 'tinnish' is a little, and 'awqalehu' is I know? Lucas: Exactly. Luna: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. I'll remember that. Lucas: And then you can turn the question back to them: አንተስ? for a man, or አንቺስ? for a woman. It means 'and you?' Luna: Ah, like 'what about you?' So አንተስ? and አንቺስ?. Lucas: Right. Let's put it together. Say you meet someone and they ask if you speak Amharic. You say: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. Luna: So: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. Let me try the whole thing. Lucas: Go for it. Luna: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. Lucas: That was really solid. You sound like you've been studying for weeks. Luna: Aww, thanks. It's because I have been! Lucas: Whoa, you just said 'I really love Amharic'! Let's break that down. Luna: Oh, I didn't even realize I said that! አማርኛ is Amharic, በጣም is 'very much,' and እወዳለሁ is 'I love.' Lucas: You got it. That's going to be my new catchphrase. Lucas: I think that's a great catchphrase. Now, let's practice a quick scene. Imagine you're at a café and someone notices you studying Amharic. Luna: Okay, I'll play myself studying. They ask, 'Are you learning Amharic?' Lucas: And you say: አዎ፣ አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Luna: አዎ፣ አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Lucas: They say 'You know some already?' Luna: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. Lucas: Ooh, you turned it back nicely. And they might say they're also learning. Then you can share: አማርኛ በጣም እወዳለሁ. Luna: አማርኛ በጣም እወዳለሁ. I already love saying that. Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Amharic, that's the reason we keep doing this. And if today felt worth it, there's a simple way to support the show. Luna: Yeah, it's the smallest thing, but it really helps us stay ad-free and focused on the language. Lucas: Exactly. So if it's worth a coffee to you, that's the link: buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: We appreciate every bit of support. Now, back to practicing — let's make sure you've got these phrases down. Lucas: Good idea. Let's do a quick review. First: I'm learning Amharic. Luna: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Lucas: I know a little. Luna: ትንሽ አውቃለሁ. Lucas: And you? Luna: አንተስ? Lucas: And you? Luna: አንቺስ? Lucas: And: I really love Amharic. Lucas: Excellent. You're ready to share your journey. Practice these between now and next time, and we'll see you for more. Luna: Catch you later, everyone!
