- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:03podcast where we talk about all things technology innovation.
- 0:07And of course, today we're going to be talking about space
- 0:09travel. Today we have a lot to discuss,
- 0:11particularly the United Launch Alliances.
- 0:14ULA's second launch of the year, an Atlas 5 rocket mission for
- 0:18the National Reconnaissance Office in the Space Force.
- 0:21Called Silent Barker NROL 107, this mission aims to deploy
- 0:27watchdog satellites to geostationary Earth orbit, which
- 0:31will help us keep tabs on the activities of other countries in
- 0:34this orbital regime. Now, ULA's activities have been
- 0:38fairly low key in comparison to SpaceX, which has conducted 63
- 0:43orbital missions so far this year.
- 0:46But don't let that overshadow the significance of the Analyst
- 0:495 launch, one that had the rocket in its most powerful
- 0:53configuration, with five solid rocket boosters in the goal to
- 0:58improve America's monitoring abilities in the geostationary
- 1:01belts, where many of our vital communications and observation
- 1:05satellites operate. It's more than just a rocket
- 1:07going up. It's about national security in
- 1:09the future of space reconnaissance if we backtrack a
- 1:13little bit. ULA's only other launch this
- 1:15year was a D4 heavy back in June.
- 1:18SpaceX, on the other hand, has been on A roll, managing to
- 1:22accomplish 63 orbital missions across all of its launch
- 1:26complexes, including California. Now, the sheer number of SpaceX
- 1:31missions has resulted in ULA falling into the background, but
- 1:34that doesn't negate the importance of these efforts.
- 1:38The Atlas Fives launch marks the 48th launch of the year from the
- 1:41Space Coast, with only three missions not coming from SpaceX.
- 1:45One came from Relativity Space launching its 3D printed Terran
- 1:49One rocket in March. But still more than three months
- 1:52to go in the year, the Space Coast is looking good to be its
- 1:552022 record of 57 launches. It's not just about quantity.
- 2:00The quality and strategic significance of these launches
- 2:03are also noteworthy. Silent Barker's mission is a
- 2:06classified 1 involving multiple payloads designed to be placed
- 2:10in geostationary Earth orbit. Now Chris Skoleze, director of
- 2:15the National Reconnaissance Office of the NRO, explained
- 2:18that the set lights will allow for enhanced understanding of
- 2:21activities happening in the orbital belt.
- 2:24Monitoring geostationary orbit is critical as it offers a
- 2:28unique viewpoint for observing earthbound activities and other
- 2:31set lights. And in terms of power, the five
- 2:33boosters of the Atlas 5 generated remarkable £2.1
- 2:37million of thrust on liftoff, and these burn for around 90
- 2:41seconds before separating from the first stage, which continued
- 2:44its upward trajectory. The Rocket Centaur upward stage,
- 2:48powered by a version of the Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10 engine,
- 2:52will ferry its national security payloads approximately 24,000
- 2:56miles away from their destination.
- 2:58Now it's worth mentioning that this isn't Atlas Five's first
- 3:01rodeo. This is the 13th time that it's
- 3:03flown with five boosters since its debut in 2006.
- 3:08Past missions have included NASA's Juneau and New Horizons
- 3:11missions, showcasing the Rockets versatility and its reliability.
- 3:16Additionally, ULA only has one D4 heavy and 18 more Atlas 5
- 3:21rockets left this lineup, with 7 earmarked for Boeing CST100
- 3:25Starliner, 9 for Amazon's Project Viper satellite
- 3:29constellation, and two others. Now ULA does have plans to
- 3:34transition to its new Vulcan Centaur rockets, but there have
- 3:38been delays. Despite these challenges, the
- 3:40next launch is set for as early as September 26th, and it's an
- 3:44important one. The first of Amazon's 9 Atlas 5
- 3:48missions that will send test satellites into orbit.
- 3:51These launches will pave the way for multiple Vulcan missions as
- 3:54well as launches of Aryan Spaces upcoming Ariana 6 and Blue
- 3:59Origin still in development? New Glen rockets.
- 4:02However, things haven't been all smooth sailing for SpaceX
- 4:06either. The FAA has raised safety
- 4:08concerns regarding Spacex's super heavy Starship launch
- 4:12vehicle. As a result, SpaceX needs to
- 4:15complete 63 corrective actions before another test flight is
- 4:19authorized. These include hardware
- 4:21redesigns, launchpad reinforcements, and enhanced
- 4:24safety protocols. It's another hurdle that SpaceX
- 4:27has to overcome, but it's crucial for ensuring the safety
- 4:31and success of future missions. SpaceX has been making headlines
- 4:35for its frequent and successful launches.
- 4:38It is also encountered some regulatory turbulence,
- 4:40particularly from the FAA. Now, the FAA cited safety
- 4:44concerns regarding Spacex's Starship, and according to the
- 4:47agency, SpaceX needs to correct and complete 63 actions before
- 4:54they can launch the Starship again.
- 4:56These corrective actions encompass a wide range of
- 4:58elements, including hardware redesigns, launchpad
- 5:01reinforcements, and bolstered safety protocols.
- 5:04And the FA A's involvement isn't surprising given its mandate to
- 5:08regulate all aspects of Civil Aviation, including commercial
- 5:11space launches. Miss Spacex's Super Heavy
- 5:14Starship is designed to be a reusable orbital class rocket,
- 5:18making it the most powerful rocket ever developed.
- 5:21Safety considerations are paramount now.
- 5:23The FA A's role here is to ensure that the rocket design,
- 5:27build quality and operational protocols meet rigorous
- 5:31standards to protect both the crew and the public, and this
- 5:35regulatory hurdle has implications for Spacex's
- 5:38broader ambitions. The Starship super heavy is
- 5:40crucial to the company's plans for interplanetary travel,
- 5:43including missions to Mars and delays in its development and
- 5:46testing timeline never ripple effect, potentially slowing down
- 5:50a variety of planned missions such as the Artemis 3 mission
- 5:53and Artemis 4, and also commercial partnerships.
- 5:57Now these could range from lunar landings with Artemis even more
- 6:01futuristic endeavors like establishing a human presence on
- 6:04Mars. However, this isn't necessary a
- 6:07roadblock that could derail Spacex's overall trajectory.
- 6:11Company has a track record of effectively responding to an
- 6:14overcoming regulatory challenges.
- 6:16Completing the 63 corrective actions is a tall order, but one
- 6:20within the realms of feasibility for SpaceX.
- 6:24What this scenario emphasizes is the balance that needs to be
- 6:27struck between innovation and safety, especially as a
- 6:30commercial space travel becomes more central to our future in
- 6:34space exploration. Now before we wrap things up,

- 6:42Countries like Russia and China have been ramping up their space
- 6:44capabilities, including potential anti satellite

- 6:55potentially threatening activities in the geostationary
- 6:58orbit providing both defensive and deterrent capabilities.
