- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Memorial Day. We're recording this today, Memorial Day. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: should be at a barbecue together.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we should be eating ribs. We should be Wait,
- 0:09Speaker 2: are you really trying wait, hold on, let me get
- 0:11Speaker 2: this straight going.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Are you really trying not to eat meat nowadays?
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am a pescatarian. I'm trying that out.
- 0:17Speaker 2: When did you become a pescatarian?
- 0:20Speaker 1: I watched this documentary that really got me inspired about
- 0:24Speaker 1: stopping eating animals besides fish.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You sound like my dad. My dad is the same
- 0:30Speaker 2: way right now.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The documentary was it's called the Game Changers. Is that
- 0:35Speaker 1: what it's called? Yes, game changers. So, but I've never
- 0:39Speaker 1: done anything. I love burgers, I love I love all
- 0:41Speaker 1: the shit we all have eaten our whole lives. But
- 0:44Speaker 1: we have all this time on our hands, right, it's
- 0:46Speaker 1: like an experimentation time on every front, right, Like you
- 0:49Speaker 1: can experiment with you know, I've been experimenting with all
- 0:53Speaker 1: sorts of things in my life. Is I'm sure a
- 0:55Speaker 1: lot of people have. And one was like, okay, well
- 0:56Speaker 1: let me just try this this during this time to
- 0:59Speaker 1: only be a fitter. And I do feel better, I
- 1:02Speaker 1: do feel healthier.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well that's great, but I know you're.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I know you're very meat passionate.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Donald.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You know, I'm trying to stay away from the red meat.
- 1:11Speaker 2: That's the hardest thing to stay away from. It's so tasty.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So I've been trying to figure out different ways to
- 1:17Speaker 2: cook a chicken, and I've been doing that a lot lately.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But yeah, you're right. I do agree that too much
- 1:24Speaker 2: meat is bad for you, obviously, because you know, cholesterol
- 1:29Speaker 2: says something about that, blood pressure says something about that,
- 1:32Speaker 2: heart disease, colorectal cancer says a lot about that, you
- 1:37Speaker 2: know what I mean, And that's when you eat too
- 1:39Speaker 2: much red meat, usually or processed foods. I'm having a
- 1:42Speaker 2: hard time getting off of all of that stuff though.
- 1:44Speaker 4: That's the problem.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I I gotta tell you last night we had a
- 1:48Speaker 1: fake burger.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You had Beyond Burger.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It wasn't one of the fancy ones. Beyond It wasn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: beyond it impossible. It was the only two names I know,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and we just got it at a supermarket. It was
- 1:59Speaker 1: a nice a nice brand. I forgot the brand, but
- 2:02Speaker 1: it was amazing. I mean, once you put cheese on
- 2:05Speaker 1: it and all the fixens and your spices, it's great.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But once you put the cheese on it, you're no
- 2:10Speaker 2: longer prescytarian whatever it is that you're treescatarian.
- 2:13Speaker 1: That's yeah, I'm I can eat cheese. I'm just not
- 2:15Speaker 1: eating I'm not eating meat. I'm not eating I'm not
- 2:19Speaker 1: eating any form of meat other than fish.
- 2:20Speaker 2: All right, well should we sing?
- 2:23Speaker 1: You don't seem happy. I want you to get happy.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You seem very dumb. You can't sing unless you're happy. Donald,
- 2:29Speaker 1: very old.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Song, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 2:31Speaker 1: You just you have a furrowed brow.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I am very happy. First of all.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Well, okay, well, let's let me see it. We're about
- 2:38Speaker 1: to bring on Randall Winston, one of the most exciting people.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'm really excited, but I don't want him.
- 2:43Speaker 1: To see you. Better turn that motherfucking bearded frown upside down.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I'm telling you something right now. Randall Winston is responsible
- 2:49Speaker 2: for some of the most happiest moments of my life.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So I can't wait to have him on.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Okay, well, then count these motherfuckers in five, six, seven, eight.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Motherfucker's here some story.
- 3:00Speaker 5: I'm that show we made about a bunch of talks
- 3:04Speaker 5: and nurses and.
- 3:07Speaker 6: He said he's a stormy so Yanda around you here,
- 3:15Speaker 6: YadA around here?
- 3:18Speaker 1: WI No, there he is? Why is he wearing like
- 3:28Speaker 1: a gaming headset?
- 3:34Speaker 4: That's the only headset I can find.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're so inorgle.
- 3:37Speaker 3: You can play an Xbox later, buddy.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Did we interrupt you from call of duty? Or are
- 3:44Speaker 1: you flying atop? Are you flying a chopper anytimes too?
- 3:48Speaker 4: A w.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Oh my god, we're so excited to have you on
- 3:54Speaker 3: the show. Yeah, we hear you.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Just awesome. Yes, these are this is my son's gaming
- 3:58Speaker 4: heads I knew it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: By the way, this is gonna be I wish the
- 4:01Speaker 1: audience could see Randel is wearing a gaming headset. But
- 4:05Speaker 1: if you don't play games, picture a helicopter headset and
- 4:10Speaker 1: he's in his beautiful garden and he's wearing his kids
- 4:14Speaker 1: gaming indset.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Well that literally is it?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Literally is a game lights up? I love it? I
- 4:20Speaker 2: love it.
- 4:21Speaker 4: How are you man?
- 4:22Speaker 1: How are you? Randy?
- 4:23Speaker 4: I am fantastic, I mean, of things considered, I'm great.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, congratulations on your pickup.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Yes we did.
- 4:32Speaker 2: We didn't get picked up, Randall, but.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I didn't know you didn't get picked up. I'm sorry.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It's all good.
- 4:40Speaker 2: ABC decided not to go further with Emergents, but better news,
- 4:43Speaker 2: ABC decided to go further with Mixed Dish, which is
- 4:47Speaker 2: Randall's show.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Now, let me get this straight.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Randal, you're executive producer on the show.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Now that is correct.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Look at you man started.
- 4:56Speaker 1: At a rand We gotta go back because Randall's career
- 4:59Speaker 1: is on and I think if for people that want
- 5:02Speaker 1: to go into Hollywood, Randall is a really exciting case
- 5:06Speaker 1: of someone that's on Fuego right now.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Well, not only is Antuego. I remember a video. I
- 5:11Speaker 2: don't know how I saw this video, but it was
- 5:13Speaker 2: a video of you pretty much manifesting your destiny, you
- 5:17Speaker 2: know what I mean, saying this is what I want
- 5:19Speaker 2: to do. I want to move to Hollywood. I want
- 5:21Speaker 2: to be a I want to be a big time producer.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And you know, and you're very young in this video too.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I don't know how I saw this video.
- 5:31Speaker 7: It was it was posted by a friend of mine.
- 5:34Speaker 7: It was we were like it was our twenty first
- 5:37Speaker 7: birthday or something like that.
- 5:38Speaker 4: This is a.
- 5:39Speaker 7: Girl who I met on the journey to Los Angeles.
- 5:44Speaker 7: We met at a rest stop in Oklahoma and became
- 5:47Speaker 7: life for friends. We were on our way to come
- 5:48Speaker 7: find our dreams. And she was very into documenting everything
- 5:53Speaker 7: and Donald, I can't believe you saw that.
- 5:55Speaker 4: That's that's crazy.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Donald and I are very into well I don't know, Donald,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I think you are, but I'm very pro right now
- 6:02Speaker 1: manifesting your shit and making everything happen. My friend, our friend,
- 6:06Speaker 1: Amanda is missed like whiteboard and writing everything down. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: actually I became friendly with John Legend's manager. I think
- 6:14Speaker 1: I've told you this story, Donald, who said that everything
- 6:16Speaker 1: that John Legend has accomplished they put on a whiteboard
- 6:19Speaker 1: when they were kids, like out out of college, and
- 6:22Speaker 1: they were like writing down, like they were laughing, like
- 6:25Speaker 1: I don't know this many Grammys and cover a Time
- 6:28Speaker 1: magazine and they were just like cracking each other up.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And She's like, every single thing we put on that
- 6:32Speaker 1: whiteboard happened.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, John Legend got an egot.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He's got well, Randall's gonna get a fucking egot, especially
- 6:40Speaker 1: for his acting skills.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Oh boy, here we go.
- 6:42Speaker 1: No, we had to get into it because Donald called
- 6:45Speaker 1: me out to Randall saying that I dissed his work
- 6:48Speaker 1: as death in the show, and Randall texted me very
- 6:52Speaker 1: upset about his work. Is Death being criticized.
- 6:57Speaker 7: I mean, I think I played the part that was
- 7:00Speaker 7: required of Death. And I also, you know, death is
- 7:07Speaker 7: not the only role that they played on Scrubs, you know.
- 7:09Speaker 2: No, you also well, we haven't gotten to the to
- 7:11Speaker 2: the security guard yet.
- 7:13Speaker 3: He hasn't been introduced yet.
- 7:14Speaker 2: The hook the hook handed security guards.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot that you were the hook handed security guard.
- 7:21Speaker 7: Leonard who had letter Leonard who had tens of fans?
- 7:28Speaker 1: Randall, how many episodes did Leonard do? Do you think?
- 7:31Speaker 7: I don't know exactly how many episodes he did, but
- 7:35Speaker 7: I will tell you this, all fans that wrote to me.
- 7:38Speaker 7: So many people from Men's prison got some sort of
- 7:43Speaker 7: treat assigned script or something from Scrubs.
- 7:46Speaker 2: So you were you weren't able to you weren't you
- 7:48Speaker 2: were able to do it and not get carpor tunnel,
- 7:51Speaker 2: is what you're saying, because there's only like tens of them.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Exactly would you really give fan mail?
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, I got like not a.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Lot, but you got more fan mail Leonard or death.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Leonard? For sure.
- 8:11Speaker 3: All right, let's go back to the beginning.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Yes, let's start at the very beginning.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I tried to do that with you manifesting your destiny.
- 8:19Speaker 2: But at some point things changed for you, Like you
- 8:22Speaker 2: lived in New York for a little bit and then
- 8:24Speaker 2: you moved to Los Angeles. Can you just tell us
- 8:26Speaker 2: how it all started and how you got connected with Bill,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and how this became and how this all trans sent
- 8:33Speaker 2: it into scrubs.
- 8:35Speaker 7: Yes, the truth is Bill and I met socially first.
- 8:39Speaker 7: As a matter of fact, on scrubs. We kept a
- 8:43Speaker 7: graduation photo in Turk and JD's apartment and told everybody
- 8:47Speaker 7: that was our graduation picture. But we really we met
- 8:52Speaker 7: on the basketball court. I had an I had an
- 8:54Speaker 7: old room, so I had I had driven out from
- 8:58Speaker 7: the Midwest, you know, I trying to trying to find
- 9:01Speaker 7: my dream, got to Los Angeles, snuck onto all the
- 9:05Speaker 7: lots in town, got myself a job, and I started
- 9:09Speaker 7: creating my circle, you know, your chosen family, your la family,
- 9:14Speaker 7: and a guy who was my best friend, who I
- 9:19Speaker 7: lived with, a guy named Greg Malon's who went on
- 9:21Speaker 7: to run friends, and how I met your mother, and
- 9:24Speaker 7: a bunch of other stuff. He and Bill had this
- 9:28Speaker 7: played in this Saturday game and invited me to play
- 9:32Speaker 7: a few times. And that's how that was how I
- 9:36Speaker 7: originally met met Bill. I went from working for a
- 9:42Speaker 7: guy named Gary Dave Goldberg. That was my very first job.
- 9:45Speaker 7: He's the guy who created Family Ties.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 7: He was amazing. He was an amazing mentor and he
- 9:52Speaker 7: had taken Bill under his wing. So so Gary is
- 9:56Speaker 7: in some ways the reason that we started working together.
- 10:00Speaker 7: And the first show we did together was a show
- 10:02Speaker 7: called Champs. That was the first show we did together
- 10:05Speaker 7: and Kevin Neelan was in it, and it was it
- 10:08Speaker 7: was DreamWorks very first TV show.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So that kind of okay.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Just to so Kevin Nielan, who Zach remembers being at
- 10:20Speaker 2: the first party we ever had in our scrub up.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That's why Kevin Nielan was there, Zach. He wasn't there
- 10:27Speaker 2: because he was a fan of the show. He was
- 10:29Speaker 2: there because he worked with Bill and Randall.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Okay, well he may have been a coincidence, but okay,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I'll hear you.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Randal V. Froze, are you still there? Oh boy?
- 10:41Speaker 2: And that was when we lost Random.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Oh god, what are you drinking there?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Mamosa, little Mimosa.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Memorial Day, Yeah, buddy. The think about Memorial Day is
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's just another weekday that you can rationalize it's okay
- 10:54Speaker 1: to drink early. Yeah, in this day and age, it
- 10:58Speaker 1: doesn't feel any different. My girlfriend was like, it's a
- 11:00Speaker 1: memorial day. I'm like, how is that going to be
- 11:02Speaker 1: different from any other day that we're living in hibernation
- 11:05Speaker 1: right now?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Well, a kid can drink.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Yeah, the kids don't have to get on zoom today.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Okay, I guess if you have kids, they don't have
- 11:11Speaker 1: to get on their zoom things.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But but today is a is a day where you know,
- 11:17Speaker 2: my wife looked at me, it was like, you're drinking already,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and I was like, it's it's.
- 11:20Speaker 1: A memorial day.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It's a memorial day.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So did she then join you?
- 11:26Speaker 4: No?
- 11:26Speaker 2: She did not. She was like, you're an alcoholic.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I was like, oh shit, be like, baby, it's a
- 11:31Speaker 1: memorial day.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And on that note, I'm going upstairs to do my podcast.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Randall says he's resetting the Wi Fi. Oh god, that's
- 11:42Speaker 2: that's that's unfortunate.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You know, we lost all the momentum of blowing this
- 11:45Speaker 1: guy up. We're gonna have to regenerate it.
- 11:47Speaker 2: We're gonna have to regenerate it.
- 11:48Speaker 1: We're gonna have to regenerate our Randall blow up.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He said, fucking Spectrum.
- 11:56Speaker 8: I just had my dad switch off of Spectrum for
- 11:58Speaker 8: the same reason that shit is do.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Trum is bad. Dan, you don't support No, guys, I
- 12:03Speaker 1: want you to listen. This is a very very technical
- 12:05Speaker 1: man here, and he's saying fuck Spectrum. So if you're
- 12:08Speaker 1: choosing a provider, listen to Dan.
- 12:10Speaker 8: The only way that I found that you get good
- 12:13Speaker 8: internet service is if you just switched from provider to
- 12:16Speaker 8: provider every year or so. Because they don't reward loyalty.
- 12:19Speaker 8: There's no like your bill is reduced, your service is better.
- 12:22Speaker 8: It just gets worse and worse and worse, and they
- 12:24Speaker 8: want to keep getting new customers. So I have gigabit
- 12:27Speaker 8: Internet a thousand megabytes up and down for seventy five
- 12:29Speaker 8: bucks a month, which is the cheapest Internet I've ever had.
- 12:32Speaker 8: And it's just because I switched.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I What are you using now, Dan, AT and T
- 12:38Speaker 1: and T All right, Well, guys, you're hearing it a
- 12:40Speaker 1: year first that Dan really recommends AT and T. It's
- 12:44Speaker 1: really about you can work the companies against each other.
- 12:47Speaker 1: If you're constantly quitting one and saying no, fuck off,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you suck, and then they give you a better rate.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So if you have the time, which you do now,
- 12:54Speaker 1: you two can have fancy fast internet like Dan Randall
- 12:58Speaker 1: welcome back, blowing you up. And then you had to
- 13:02Speaker 1: do a Wi Fi problem.
- 13:04Speaker 2: All right, so let's get back into it.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So you let's just jumped to in the spirit of time,
- 13:07Speaker 1: let's just keep this moving. You start work on Spin
- 13:10Speaker 1: City with Bill, and you hit it off. You become besties.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You're partying around the city. Your young men in Manhattan go.
- 13:19Speaker 4: From LA.
- 13:20Speaker 3: How did you get from LA to Manhattan? How did
- 13:22Speaker 3: that happen?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Well, we're playing Donald no doubt, fuck you man the fight.
- 13:27Speaker 3: If I could reach through this right now.
- 13:31Speaker 7: Uh, you know what, it goes back to basketball. We
- 13:34Speaker 7: came off to the basketball court one night playing and uh,
- 13:37Speaker 7: Gary and Bill pulled me aside and they said, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 7: we just wrote this pilot.
- 13:43Speaker 6: Uh.
- 13:43Speaker 7: We sent it to uh. We sent it to Michael J.
- 13:46Speaker 7: Fox and they said, there's a character. The mayor is
- 13:50Speaker 7: named after you. I think your mother would be very proud.
- 13:53Speaker 7: Had Mayor Randall Winston and uhlaid by the Great Barry
- 13:57Speaker 7: box work and with the show Gut. We did the
- 13:59Speaker 7: pilot LA, but Michael was living in New York and
- 14:03Speaker 7: said he would only do this series if we took
- 14:05Speaker 7: it to New York. So that was the opportunity of
- 14:09Speaker 7: a lifetime, you know, change my life. I got the
- 14:11Speaker 7: chance to go to New York. Garry took a select
- 14:14Speaker 7: group of people and Donald you know Sebastians.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Do you guys know Sebastian Gens.
- 14:18Speaker 3: We moved.
- 14:19Speaker 7: We all went to New York with all excitement, like
- 14:25Speaker 7: nobody was over anything. Everybody just was into going to
- 14:28Speaker 7: the city.
- 14:29Speaker 4: You were, how old were you I was? I think
- 14:34Speaker 4: I was twenty nine. I think I turned thirty that year.
- 14:38Speaker 4: But Bill was.
- 14:41Speaker 7: Bill's like a year younger than me, and he had
- 14:44Speaker 7: like the first American Express black card, and he would say,
- 14:48Speaker 7: you know, randall go out and find us in after
- 14:49Speaker 7: hours every Friday. So we were there'd be lines at
- 14:53Speaker 7: these after ours clubs and they're like, you know, absolutely,
- 14:56Speaker 7: we don't have any room.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I'd be like, you got room now, motherfucker.
- 14:58Speaker 7: Now Now I say, I say, I need two cases
- 15:03Speaker 7: of champagne and a private room. And that was just
- 15:06Speaker 7: the beginning.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Right now, I got to tell you something. Some of
- 15:10Speaker 2: my favorite moments, some of the best moments of my life.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I've shared with you. Rend You have been present at
- 15:16Speaker 2: some of the most special moments, some of the most
- 15:20Speaker 2: wildest moments, some of the craziest moments of my life
- 15:24Speaker 2: have been with you there.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I love that.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Everything everything from partying in Vegas to marrying him and
- 15:32Speaker 1: his wife and everything in between, Randall has been there.
- 15:35Speaker 3: He has been there.
- 15:36Speaker 1: How many people have you married, Randall?
- 15:39Speaker 4: U seventeen successful couples? Donald? What I said?
- 15:44Speaker 7: I said, you gotta be serious, because everybody I marry
- 15:46Speaker 7: stays together?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Right?
- 15:48Speaker 3: How many? How many people have gotten divorced?
- 15:51Speaker 4: Zero?
- 15:53Speaker 1: You got a good streak.
- 15:56Speaker 4: I don't have people messing my streak up.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Now, Now, Randal, if I'm listening to this, I was
- 16:03Speaker 1: preparing for this, and I thought, if I'm listening to this,
- 16:05Speaker 1: and I'm interested in production, but I don't know anything
- 16:08Speaker 1: about it. I see in the credits all the time
- 16:10Speaker 1: a line producer, but I see exec producer, I see
- 16:13Speaker 1: associate producer. I see all these titles. Could you explain
- 16:16Speaker 1: to people that I have nothing to do with the
- 16:17Speaker 1: business what a line producer does?
- 16:20Speaker 4: Yes, yes, it is.
- 16:21Speaker 7: It's true that the TV credits are lousy with producers
- 16:25Speaker 7: and usually if the credit is line producer or produced
- 16:31Speaker 7: by That credit is reserved for the person who is
- 16:36Speaker 7: essentially responsible for keeping the train running on time, making
- 16:40Speaker 7: sure that you've got the right group people in the
- 16:42Speaker 7: right place, making sure that the show is on budget,
- 16:46Speaker 7: that it is getting delivered on time, not just within
- 16:50Speaker 7: the time constricts of your time slot, but delivered the
- 16:52Speaker 7: day that it's supposed to be delivered, you know, sort
- 16:55Speaker 7: of soup to nuts. That it starts with the prep
- 16:59Speaker 7: which is, as it sounds, the preparing of the show.
- 17:02Speaker 7: When you first get a little bit of information about the
- 17:04Speaker 7: about the series and each episode, you know, you start
- 17:07Speaker 7: to break it down with your team. You know, how
- 17:10Speaker 7: many actors are we going to need, do we need
- 17:11Speaker 7: to build sets? Are we going out anywhere? And what
- 17:15Speaker 7: is it going to take? And I think that job
- 17:18Speaker 7: at its best is a negotiator and a translator. You know,
- 17:23Speaker 7: that's somebody who you know, oftentimes it was between I'm
- 17:28Speaker 7: working between Bill on scrubs, between Bill who created the show,
- 17:33Speaker 7: and the studio and the network.
- 17:35Speaker 4: So everybody's getting what they need and.
- 17:39Speaker 7: Even when they're not speaking the same language, or figure
- 17:42Speaker 7: out what the best thing to accomplish what's in the
- 17:47Speaker 7: script is can be accomplished within the box that's been built.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and the line bruisers also, if you think about it,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the keeper of the purse in a sense that when
- 17:58Speaker 1: you're directing or show running, you will often think, oh,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think we should I wrote this big scene, would
- 18:04Speaker 1: be great to shoot it in this amazing restaurant. And
- 18:06Speaker 1: then I want to get a crane outside that's gonna
- 18:08Speaker 1: come down here, And then it'd be cool if it
- 18:10Speaker 1: was raining outside. And this is when the line producer
- 18:14Speaker 1: starts to sweat, when we start to go, wait, we
- 18:16Speaker 1: need rain, need rain.
- 18:18Speaker 7: Every every time, every time Zach got a directing assignment,
- 18:22Speaker 7: before there was even a script, he could come here and.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Say, I need a crane exactly exactly.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I don't even know what the fucking script says, but
- 18:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna need a big ass cran. But so it's
- 18:32Speaker 1: the line producer's job, almost like a parent, to be like, look,
- 18:35Speaker 1: you used a dollar and you got your candy bar.
- 18:38Speaker 1: You should have saved it and you could have gotten ice.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Cream, Yes, right, I could have. You could have you
- 18:43Speaker 4: could have one big thing or two little things, right right.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And a lot of times it's negotiation, like you like, hey,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know, they're keeper of the money. But in terms
- 18:51Speaker 1: of the money, it's not just the camera gear, but
- 18:53Speaker 1: how many crew, how many extras are you're gonna be
- 18:55Speaker 1: able to afford? Are you gonna be able to do
- 18:57Speaker 1: any overtime? All of that is off into the relationship
- 19:01Speaker 1: I often have with the line producer. As they say it,
- 19:02Speaker 1: think of it like a Chinese food menu, in that
- 19:05Speaker 1: you're choosing from a myriad of things that you can have,
- 19:09Speaker 1: but you can't exceed that budget. So if you do
- 19:12Speaker 1: want a big ass crane, then maybe you can't have
- 19:14Speaker 1: as many background at the wedding.
- 19:17Speaker 7: It's so funny that you say that. I, oftentimes it
- 19:20Speaker 7: crossed my career have literally made a Chinese menu for
- 19:23Speaker 7: directors and producers, you know, because you inevitably get to
- 19:27Speaker 7: a point and Bill and I used to have, you
- 19:29Speaker 7: know something back then it was like the thousand dollars deal,
- 19:34Speaker 7: which was once we had locked the budget, he was
- 19:38Speaker 7: not allowed to bring me any.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Problems that cost more than one thousand dollars.
- 19:42Speaker 7: Like I could figure it out, you know, if it
- 19:44Speaker 7: was a thousand or under. But you know, you can't
- 19:46Speaker 7: be adding stuff once we're once we started rolling.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Now on screen. Back in the day, we would do
- 19:52Speaker 1: a lot of overtime, which which now people don't really
- 19:55Speaker 1: do anymore, right, I mean on your jobs now, are
- 19:58Speaker 1: people pretty much keeping it to twelve hours these days?
- 20:01Speaker 7: It depends, really, I mean for the for the most part, yes,
- 20:04Speaker 7: but a lot has changed. You know, we did for
- 20:06Speaker 7: a big chunk of that show a true single camera show,
- 20:09Speaker 7: which is almost all shows have more than one camera
- 20:12Speaker 7: rolling at the time now, so you can get more
- 20:14Speaker 7: work done within the hours you can get you know,
- 20:17Speaker 7: for those who do people you know that just between
- 20:20Speaker 7: single and multi like usually on the single camera show,
- 20:23Speaker 7: you're getting one angle at a time, shooting one actors
- 20:25Speaker 7: close up, and then you turn around and get the
- 20:27Speaker 7: other actor, and the more actors in a scene, you know,
- 20:29Speaker 7: the more times you're turning, And if you have multiple cameras,
- 20:33Speaker 7: then you can get multiple shots.
- 20:36Speaker 4: But on a show like Mixed Dish, you know.
- 20:40Speaker 7: Or you know, American Housewife or any show that's got
- 20:43Speaker 7: a family, you know, family show as opposed to community,
- 20:46Speaker 7: you're up against kid hours. So those shows in particular
- 20:49Speaker 7: are held to a bricter standard.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Powers I'm gonna be honest with you, I love it
- 20:52Speaker 2: when kids are on the show now and you're working
- 20:54Speaker 2: the show because you're not going past twelve hours. Dude,
- 20:57Speaker 2: you might not even do eight hours that day, you
- 20:59Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 21:00Speaker 3: I love it.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I did love so I did emergence this uh this
- 21:04Speaker 2: last year didn't get picked up ABC.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 21:07Speaker 4: You were great in it.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Donald, by the way, you were great in that show.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I think we should pour some out for emergence of Emergence.
- 21:15Speaker 2: But I remember we had two very young ladies on
- 21:18Speaker 2: the show and they were in school, and once they
- 21:21Speaker 2: showed up to set, we had the clock was ticking.
- 21:24Speaker 2: We had eight hours to get them done or they
- 21:26Speaker 2: would they turned into a pumpkin.
- 21:28Speaker 4: And so.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I used to love that. It would be like, are
- 21:34Speaker 2: the kids working today? And they'd be like yeah, and
- 21:35Speaker 2: I'd be like, great. That means I'm done before you know,
- 21:38Speaker 2: I'm done before the sun goes down. Is when the
- 21:40Speaker 2: kids weren't working that you were like, oh my god,
- 21:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna be here forever. Well, random, you.
- 21:45Speaker 7: See kids on there, you can make it right, Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Right, You'd be like, I can make that eight o'clock
- 21:49Speaker 3: movie tonight.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Randall, you and I always got along so well. You know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: sometimes the relationship between a director and a line proderher
- 21:57Speaker 1: could be contentious because the director feels like, oh, you're
- 22:00Speaker 1: taking away. You're not you're not working with me, you're
- 22:01Speaker 1: not making it, you're not helping me realize all the
- 22:04Speaker 1: things I want to do. Of course, the line producer
- 22:06Speaker 1: has a stressful job. You're like, dude, you're killing me.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You're so over budget, what the hell are you talking about.
- 22:10Speaker 1: But but when the two are friends and they feel like, hey,
- 22:14Speaker 1: let's work it out, then it then then it never
- 22:15Speaker 1: gets contentious. But of course sometimes when people don't get along,
- 22:19Speaker 1: the line producer and the director don't always like each other.
- 22:22Speaker 7: Well, I think that uh it has been to the
- 22:26Speaker 7: great benefit of my career in general. Part of it
- 22:28Speaker 7: is just I think the way that I like to
- 22:30Speaker 7: work is that the goal is to be symbiotic. Like
- 22:33Speaker 7: you know, when people think that it's contentious, it is contentious,
- 22:36Speaker 7: but you know, we're all rowing in the same direction.
- 22:38Speaker 7: You want, you want a great show. You want and
- 22:40Speaker 7: comedies in particular, you know, like I think about the episode,
- 22:44Speaker 7: not that the episode of ting About Day, but your
- 22:47Speaker 7: episode when you when you go into the puddle and
- 22:50Speaker 7: you see uh.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Se monster do you see a sea monster? It was
- 22:58Speaker 1: not a sea monster. Rand named Julian.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Julian. I love that you.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Said sea monsters. What was the sea monster's name?
- 23:10Speaker 7: So that's a perfect example of that script had so
- 23:15Speaker 7: much in it.
- 23:17Speaker 4: But that was the biggest joke in the show.
- 23:19Speaker 7: And you know, we had to call the city and
- 23:22Speaker 7: get Diggler and it was the first time I got
- 23:23Speaker 7: to use a Jack Cameron and we're like digging holes
- 23:25Speaker 7: in the parking lot and creating a swimming pool that
- 23:29Speaker 7: we're gonna have to fill in. But but the question was,
- 23:32Speaker 7: you know, is this one of the funniest things.
- 23:35Speaker 4: In the script.
- 23:35Speaker 7: What what are we what are we gonna give up
- 23:37Speaker 7: or combined so that we can keep that and that
- 23:41Speaker 7: trusting relationship, you know, with with with the actor, with
- 23:44Speaker 7: the director, with the writers, you know, builds that thing
- 23:48Speaker 7: that you're talking.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And Ron and Renald you're the kind of person that
- 23:50Speaker 1: was like so on board. You'd be like, oh my god,
- 23:53Speaker 1: we have to figure out we have to figure out
- 23:54Speaker 1: a way. I know because I think that I think
- 23:58Speaker 1: that gag, which involved building two different small swimming pools
- 24:01Speaker 1: to code because the city was not gonna let anyone
- 24:04Speaker 1: not do it to code was one of the most
- 24:05Speaker 1: expensive gags in Scrubs history, as I recall.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Yes it was, Yes it was very expensive.
- 24:12Speaker 2: But that's you're right, Zach. That's a very important point.
- 24:16Speaker 2: If you have a line producer who's game, and it's like,
- 24:19Speaker 2: I can figure this out. If you work with me,
- 24:22Speaker 2: we can figure this out, You're gonna get some of
- 24:25Speaker 2: the best stuff, you know what I mean.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Of course, of course I was so worried about Randall
- 24:28Speaker 1: was he wasn't you know some of these guys and
- 24:30Speaker 1: gals are sitting in office and they're rolling your eyes
- 24:32Speaker 1: when you walk in. Randon was out there with the
- 24:34Speaker 1: jackhammer being like, I can't believe O're building is.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Totally true? All right?
- 24:46Speaker 1: Should we get into the episode. Let's get into the episode. So, Randal,
- 24:50Speaker 1: this one is supersized. Let's talk about that very rare.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Most episodes thus far in the show are been twenty
- 24:57Speaker 1: two minutes without commercials. This one is twenty eight, which
- 24:59Speaker 1: is a bit big leap to supersize.
- 25:01Speaker 7: Right, It was a big It was a big issue
- 25:03Speaker 7: at the time, this show with the pizza clock as
- 25:07Speaker 7: we as we called it. But the network was very
- 25:11Speaker 7: contemptous about this episode, and they did not rerun it
- 25:13Speaker 7: again in certainly not that season, and I don't think
- 25:17Speaker 7: for years because being supersized and it's a it's a
- 25:24Speaker 7: very thoughtful episode, you know, very emotional goes inside where
- 25:27Speaker 7: are where the characters are?
- 25:29Speaker 4: And I think at the time, you know.
- 25:31Speaker 7: We were still in season one and they wanted it
- 25:33Speaker 7: to just to be you know, more JD falling.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, they were like, what are you doing this
- 25:40Speaker 1: weird documentary style interludes? I mean, where's JD running into
- 25:43Speaker 1: a wall? And you know, but it's a great episode.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I just want to say. Written by Gabrielle Allen and
- 25:50Speaker 1: directed by Lawrence Trilling, who became one of our favorites
- 25:55Speaker 1: early on. He then went on to do Pushing Daisies
- 25:58Speaker 1: and Parenthood and I just googled now that he's on Goliath.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But super talented guy.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I think Lawrence Trilling and I did Felicity together.
- 26:07Speaker 1: You did?
- 26:08Speaker 2: You did?
- 26:08Speaker 1: You did? Were we ever on Alias? Done?
- 26:11Speaker 2: No? I was never on Alias?
- 26:12Speaker 1: Okay, well he also did Alias, but yeah, he directed
- 26:15Speaker 1: Young Donald Faison and Felicity.
- 26:17Speaker 7: He's a really great guy, really fun, good director, and
- 26:21Speaker 7: Gabby got I love her.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Good team great team, and I just thought there's a
- 26:28Speaker 1: lot of style to this. So so there became this
- 26:30Speaker 1: convention a few conventions. There's the pizza clock thing if
- 26:33Speaker 1: you look down at the pizza guys in case you
- 26:36Speaker 1: didn't notice, the idea was that it was mimicking a clock.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And so as the episode is cutting between that one
- 26:43Speaker 1: night of Sarah and I in bed and then back
- 26:45Speaker 1: to the few weeks that follow us trying to date,
- 26:49Speaker 1: whenever it cuts back the pizzas trying to look like
- 26:52Speaker 1: a clock from that night. So there's that sort of gag,
- 26:56Speaker 1: the timeline shake up, and then there's these documentary stole,
- 27:00Speaker 1: shaky cam, grainy film as though we're all being interviewed
- 27:04Speaker 1: for a psychologist project on why people become doctors?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Right, all right, okay, well that's not I thought that
- 27:13Speaker 2: was the next episode.
- 27:14Speaker 1: But okay, no, that's my bed banter. And beyond that's
- 27:17Speaker 1: like inter cutting Salen I and our big epic fuck
- 27:21Speaker 1: fest for lack of.
- 27:23Speaker 2: A better term, I gotta tell you something, man, nobodd
- 27:26Speaker 2: miss that. Let's go back. Are you said the word?
- 27:30Speaker 2: And now I'm gonna now we can talk about it.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I guess I missed those days. I missed the days
- 27:35Speaker 2: when it was just sex all day, you know, before kids,
- 27:39Speaker 2: when you could just bone all day, then go out
- 27:43Speaker 2: to dinner that night and then bone some more. My
- 27:47Speaker 2: wife and I, you know what, we gotta make an
- 27:49Speaker 2: appointment now, and.
- 27:50Speaker 1: It sucks, isn't in your eye?
- 27:52Speaker 2: Cow Dude, I'll be like, it's you think it's a joke,
- 27:56Speaker 2: and a lot of stand up comics have made this joke,
- 27:58Speaker 2: but it's real. You'll be like, how about sex Thursday?
- 28:01Speaker 3: Can we do Thursday? I'm having my hair done right, No, no, no, no,
- 28:06Speaker 3: no, no no.
- 28:07Speaker 2: The kid's got zoom all day. I'm gonna be exhausted
- 28:09Speaker 2: by eight o'clock. There's no way. And Ozark comes on.
- 28:13Speaker 2: I gotta watch Ozark.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Okay, well, Jason Bateman, Jason Bateman is stealing your sex night.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Jason Bateman is fucking it.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Up for me right now.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Dude.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I hear the shows, the good looking man, I hear
- 28:26Speaker 2: the shows great, but damn you, Jason Bateman. I just
- 28:30Speaker 2: wish he could get through the show already. I just
- 28:32Speaker 2: missed those days. I missed the days where it was
- 28:34Speaker 2: like and granted, I love my children and I love
- 28:37Speaker 2: having them in my life.
- 28:39Speaker 3: But I just missed the days.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Of freaking waking up, boning, going to Hugo's to get
- 28:45Speaker 2: breakfast or brunch, right, brunch, whatever it is, coming back
- 28:52Speaker 2: home and being like, well, what do you want to do? Well,
- 28:54Speaker 2: we haven't fucked in like five hours, we might as
- 28:56Speaker 2: well fuck again.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Perfect Donald.
- 29:00Speaker 7: I am sitting outside looking longingly at my blackout shutters
- 29:05Speaker 7: and how will you to use them?
- 29:06Speaker 4: So much more?
- 29:07Speaker 9: Right?
- 29:07Speaker 7: Like craik it down, black out the bedroom and.
- 29:12Speaker 3: And do what you gotta do right them? Days is
- 29:15Speaker 3: over them?
- 29:16Speaker 2: Days?
- 29:16Speaker 1: Is you guys are really doing a great ad for
- 29:19Speaker 1: having children right now?
- 29:21Speaker 2: No, you should do it.
- 29:22Speaker 3: It's great, It's wonderful.
- 29:25Speaker 1: As you both drink your white claw.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Now.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Elliott has said in previous episodes that she's never had
- 29:32Speaker 1: an orgasm, and she said that she doesn't like sex.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So is JD the first person to not only bring
- 29:40Speaker 1: her to orgasm but show her the wondrous world of
- 29:43Speaker 1: epic sex days?
- 29:45Speaker 3: I'm sure you would like to think so.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I think. Yes, I'm not JD. Donald, I'm Zach Braff,
- 29:51Speaker 1: but I'm character of JD. Probably was good in.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Bed well, you know, in the beginning of it all,
- 29:57Speaker 2: JD was kind of a sucker when he's like he
- 30:00Speaker 2: almost let her walk out of the house, and she
- 30:02Speaker 2: was obviously very much into JD.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Well, I don't know, dude, I disagree. I was watching
- 30:09Speaker 1: it with fresh eyes and I was thinking I couldn't
- 30:11Speaker 1: read where she was. Was she like, hey, I should go?
- 30:15Speaker 1: And then you know, you know what that's like back
- 30:17Speaker 1: in the day.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Do I hate that shit? I hate that shit?
- 30:20Speaker 2: Why to test? Why I gotta be tested for? How
- 30:22Speaker 2: come you can't just be like, you know what, maybe
- 30:25Speaker 2: uh if this was a mistake.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Was it a mistake though? Or did you know what
- 30:29Speaker 3: I mean?
- 30:30Speaker 2: Like I remember saying to my wife when she was
- 30:32Speaker 2: my girlfriend, like, you know, I don't know, I don't
- 30:35Speaker 2: know if this is if this is working out, you
- 30:38Speaker 2: know what I mean, and her being like, you don't
- 30:41Speaker 2: this is Wait a second, this is the best thing
- 30:45Speaker 2: that's ever happened to you.
- 30:46Speaker 3: What do you mean you don't know if this is
- 30:48Speaker 3: working out? Like that was real talk.
- 30:50Speaker 2: The fact that JD almost had her out the door
- 30:53Speaker 2: before he was before she turned around and was like, yo,
- 30:56Speaker 2: just say you want me to stay and stop being
- 30:58Speaker 2: a sucker, stop being a a little punk about this.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Just say you want me to stay, and I'll stay
- 31:04Speaker 2: and we can go have sex again. And then he's
- 31:06Speaker 2: finally like will you stay? She's like, yeah, you gotta
- 31:09Speaker 2: pay for that though, because I almost will.
- 31:11Speaker 1: But don't you remember back in the day when you weren't,
- 31:13Speaker 1: when you weren't in such a long term relationship. When
- 31:16Speaker 1: something's new and you're kind of insecure about it, You're like,
- 31:19Speaker 1: did this person have as good of fun as I did?
- 31:21Speaker 1: I don't want to be the one who put I
- 31:23Speaker 1: don't want to put my one. I don't want to
- 31:24Speaker 1: be the one who puts myself out there and and
- 31:26Speaker 1: and gets dissed. Like you're you're You're in a very
- 31:29Speaker 1: vulnerable state. You're like, I kind of like this person,
- 31:31Speaker 1: do they like me?
- 31:32Speaker 4: You know? Well?
- 31:33Speaker 3: Did I ja?
- 31:34Speaker 7: Do you?
- 31:34Speaker 4: The character just wasn't he in the friend zone a
- 31:36Speaker 4: couple episodes before that? Yeah?
- 31:38Speaker 3: Yeah they were? They were friend zoned?
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah, like, uh, maybe seven episodes before he gets friend
- 31:44Speaker 2: zoned and.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Then he and then we gotta go to break. We'll
- 31:47Speaker 1: be right back with the legendary Randall Winster.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Random where instand is. We're very excited.
- 32:05Speaker 1: We're very excited Randall's here. We're talking about sex. JD
- 32:08Speaker 1: and Elliott have an epic, epic twenty four hours of sex,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and it seems that JD has found a way to
- 32:16Speaker 1: bring Elliott all the way to the Promised Land because
- 32:19Speaker 1: she seems to be really enjoying sex.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Well, the fact that they have it like six or
- 32:23Speaker 2: seven times is ridiculous. And she even brings up, I'm
- 32:25Speaker 2: gonna need a vagina transport.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, she says, she said, I need av giinant transplant,
- 32:28Speaker 1: which is a very funny fantasy. Cutting to the guys,
- 32:31Speaker 1: uh running through.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Don't go Bucks Boler.
- 32:40Speaker 7: Randall was that they should have done the song vagainaa Bucks.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Randall was vagina transplant something that anyone was worried about
- 32:47Speaker 1: getting through the sensors because it seems pretty pretty risque
- 32:50Speaker 1: to have a vagina in a box.
- 32:53Speaker 7: Yes, I remember there being like some conversation, but I
- 32:58Speaker 7: can't remember whether it was whether it was a lot
- 33:00Speaker 7: of crims. But the great thing about Scrubs was that
- 33:03Speaker 7: there was always something else to point at, like you know,
- 33:06Speaker 7: another red herring. I was like, well, we have a
- 33:08Speaker 7: giant in the box. But he says dick three times
- 33:11Speaker 7: two pages later, we'll get rid of that and let
- 33:13Speaker 7: us keep the giant.
- 33:14Speaker 1: So part of Randall's job was was being Bill's liaison
- 33:17Speaker 1: to the studio and being like, listen, guys, it's just
- 33:20Speaker 1: one vagina in a box. We're not gonna have vaginas
- 33:23Speaker 1: in boxes every week.
- 33:27Speaker 7: And and the and the great thing about about the uh,
- 33:31Speaker 7: the working with the person. There was a woman I
- 33:35Speaker 7: can't remember this if this was Sandy Christmas, it was
- 33:37Speaker 7: this Sandy Christmas. It was this very sweet woman who
- 33:41Speaker 7: used to have these conversations with So I'd get on
- 33:43Speaker 7: the phone and she'd be like, now, Randa, I packed
- 33:45Speaker 7: the vagina in the box, and you know, and then
- 33:51Speaker 7: you later say, Penis you know do we have to
- 33:54Speaker 7: have all of that in the show.
- 33:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And what's funny is they'll often give you they'll often
- 33:59Speaker 1: give you a sheet of all their objections and it's
- 34:01Speaker 1: a negotiation, and then even when you get it through,
- 34:04Speaker 1: they'd be like, Okay, we're fine with the vagina in
- 34:06Speaker 1: the box, Please do not show a vagina in a box.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Like even shit, You're like, really, guys, you had to
- 34:14Speaker 1: write that on the paper, like you think we were
- 34:16Speaker 1: gonna cut into a vagina on for NBC in the box.
- 34:19Speaker 7: And sometimes they say sometimes they say stuff and you're thinking,
- 34:22Speaker 7: oh damn, you're weight dirtier than I thought.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Right now, that is not what we meant. This is
- 34:30Speaker 4: a true story.
- 34:31Speaker 7: We had to go into the effects visual effects and
- 34:36Speaker 7: adjust Donald scrubs in a particular scene because they thought
- 34:39Speaker 7: were seeing too much of a bob.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Oh, that is how we do, Dan, how about thunder
- 34:46Speaker 1: and we do. Let's have some thunders.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Applause or as applause from my junk.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And then Dan, if you wouldn't mind put him?
- 34:57Speaker 7: That was I used to do a Loma at the
- 35:00Speaker 7: and most of my yes inspired me to just.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Go mm hmm.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Whenever Nurse Roberts couldn't be at the table, read Randa
- 35:08Speaker 1: would would play her and his favorite part was doing her.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Speaking of speaking of Aloma. Holy cow, she's amazing in
- 35:16Speaker 2: this episode, very funny. Every one of her lines lands hard.
- 35:21Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 35:22Speaker 2: White boys? Uh? You mean it was a secret all
- 35:26Speaker 2: of that stuff, everything that everything that she said in
- 35:29Speaker 2: this episode, I laughed out loud.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Now let's get ready into it right away, you know,
- 35:33Speaker 1: let's you know, the janitor sees Aloma and she sees him,
- 35:39Speaker 1: and she looks at him like get the fuck out
- 35:42Speaker 1: of my way and Randall, Bill is still hanging on
- 35:45Speaker 1: to his his his dream that the Janitor was only
- 35:49Speaker 1: seen by JD in season one and we we are
- 35:52Speaker 1: Donald and I are detectives that are quickly proving him
- 35:55Speaker 1: wrong in every other episode.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I was.
- 35:59Speaker 7: I never bought into that, that that he was a
- 36:02Speaker 7: figment of JD's imagination.
- 36:03Speaker 2: It's mister Snuffles.
- 36:05Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I mean, and I remember he had because
- 36:09Speaker 7: there's some episodes later. I remember an episode I directed
- 36:12Speaker 7: where he has a group of henchmen played by our
- 36:14Speaker 7: grip team, you know in they are all in it with.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Him, and isn't his his side? He has two sidekicks,
- 36:24Speaker 2: Troy and Randall.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Right, yeah, Randall.
- 36:27Speaker 2: I remember Randall played by Martin, played by.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Martin Martin, who was also in Oz the Great and
- 36:33Speaker 1: Powerful with me, and he was also in Pirates of
- 36:35Speaker 1: the Caribbean.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Yes that.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Let's talk about Colleco Vision, which comes up at seven
- 36:42Speaker 1: twenty one. Did you have Collecovision either one of you?
- 36:45Speaker 3: I did not.
- 36:45Speaker 2: My friend had Calleco Vision, and I remember colleco Vision
- 36:48Speaker 2: being so awesome because the video games looked exactly like
- 36:51Speaker 2: they look in the arcade. So if we had Donkey Kong,
- 36:54Speaker 2: it looked like Donkey Kong from the arcade.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I thought that was the first thing.
- 36:57Speaker 2: And you at first do you remember that game? I don't.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I don't remember the Smurf.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Well, if you were interested in video games, please go.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I'm sure on YouTube they can play you the theme
- 37:07Speaker 1: music from Smurfs on Cleacovision. And that jam was fire,
- 37:11Speaker 1: was it?
- 37:12Speaker 9: La la la la la la la la la la.
- 37:16Speaker 4: Come on?
- 37:16Speaker 3: That was the dope ship la.
- 37:18Speaker 9: La la la la la la la la la la.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Ahead.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Let me, let's put it this way. If jay Z
- 37:25Speaker 2: can make a song from Hard Knock Life, Yes.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Dude, do that again and I'll kick in my beat
- 37:30Speaker 1: box and we got a jam halfway there.
- 37:33Speaker 9: Hey, la la la la la la la la la
- 37:42Speaker 9: la la la la la la la la.
- 37:45Speaker 2: La la la la.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Dam And you're gonna have to line that up with
- 37:50Speaker 1: some delay. But we I think it's fire, and I
- 37:52Speaker 1: think we can beat a Hard Knocked Life.
- 37:56Speaker 7: You you did me that Donald On set you to
- 38:00Speaker 7: do Transformers as a dude.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Late Neil Diamond, Neil Diamond singing Transformers. I thought I
- 38:07Speaker 2: did it already, but if I haven't, if you missed it,
- 38:09Speaker 2: Transformers more than meets the eye. Keep going, keep going,
- 38:18Speaker 2: bus face their battles to destroy the evil forces of
- 38:25Speaker 2: the Decepticons.
- 38:29Speaker 1: By the way, Neil Diamond's your best impersonation. You also
- 38:32Speaker 1: do a pretty good Uh, I don't know how much.
- 38:36Speaker 3: My well, you do a better version of Aaron Neville
- 38:38Speaker 3: than I do.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I mean, here, mine's trash that maybe yeahs is way
- 38:51Speaker 2: better than mine, way better than mine.
- 38:53Speaker 1: There you go. That's the extent of our impressions. Gleco
- 38:55Speaker 1: Vision great game system. I felt like a baller because
- 38:58Speaker 1: I had it, and uh, you know, I remember that
- 39:01Speaker 1: control was like it was like a long rectangle and
- 39:04Speaker 1: then there was the.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Circle on the bottom.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Not to be confused within television, which I didn't have.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Or in television. Wow was it in television? It was
- 39:13Speaker 2: Kalico Vision.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I start with the Atari twenty six hundred. I remember
- 39:18Speaker 1: that everybody had that.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and then.
- 39:21Speaker 1: There was Kalovision. Go ahead, Randall, I feel like the
- 39:24Speaker 1: guy with the gaming head that you weigh in.
- 39:29Speaker 7: But this makes me said one hundred years old. I
- 39:31Speaker 7: am currently doing a puzzle during COVID that is all
- 39:36Speaker 7: of the original video games Atari and like, yeah, so it's.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I need that puzzle. We we got a Van Gos
- 39:45Speaker 1: Starry Night and we are not even getting anywhere near
- 39:47Speaker 1: to starting it. But I feel like if it was
- 39:48Speaker 1: the old game consoles, we've had it done already.
- 39:51Speaker 4: I'm sending it to you.
- 39:52Speaker 2: There's an Alf mentioned in this show ALF. I was
- 39:56Speaker 2: a huge fan of ALF when.
- 39:57Speaker 1: I too, Max, Right, what do you doing out?
- 40:03Speaker 2: The puppet from out of space who loved to eat cats?
- 40:07Speaker 1: I remember being a little kid and the trailer teaser
- 40:10Speaker 1: for ALF came on and I remember being a little kid,
- 40:12Speaker 1: my first film critic going that looks so stupid. Cut
- 40:16Speaker 1: to me loving Alf, like having alf stuffed animals?
- 40:20Speaker 7: What was not to love about ALF? I visited the
- 40:23Speaker 7: ALF set, you did, I remember?
- 40:25Speaker 4: Yes?
- 40:25Speaker 1: That was it raised up so they could have a
- 40:27Speaker 1: puppet teer.
- 40:28Speaker 7: Yes, And it was like it was It wasn't at
- 40:30Speaker 7: a real stage. It was at uh an a warehouse
- 40:33Speaker 7: in Culver City.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Is I Paul Max Wright, who was who played the father,
- 40:37Speaker 1: who was an accomplished theater actor and Shakespearean actor and
- 40:41Speaker 1: genius act all around fucking hated it. I think that's
- 40:44Speaker 1: part of the lore is that he absolutely hated doing
- 40:47Speaker 1: a puppet show.
- 40:51Speaker 7: Now, did you did you watch all the Alps? We
- 40:54Speaker 7: were religious elf because.
- 40:55Speaker 1: There's episodes on Mitch. I mean, I'm not ready to
- 40:57Speaker 1: do the rewatch podcast, but.
- 40:58Speaker 7: There's a there's a very special ALF where I remember
- 41:02Speaker 7: mostly is crying during alf.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Alf would to visit the girl in the hospital. It
- 41:06Speaker 4: was like, you know, tonight on a very special alf.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Do you remember when they would do you remember when
- 41:13Speaker 1: they would like back in the day, for those of
- 41:14Speaker 1: you who are too young, they when there was a
- 41:16Speaker 1: sad like on Scrubs. We had sad episodes all the time.
- 41:19Speaker 1: But on the old school sitcoms they would always warn you,
- 41:22Speaker 1: like tonight on a very special Silver Spoons, the ricker
- 41:27Speaker 1: will the ricker will kill a deer. We recommend and
- 41:31Speaker 1: they would go, we recommend parents watch with their children.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Do you remember that for sure?
- 41:35Speaker 7: But on Scrubs, if it was sad, we just would
- 41:38Speaker 7: play the theme song a little.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Yeah, So there was silver Spoons when the wrecker killed
- 41:49Speaker 1: a deer, there was different strokes. When Dudley got molested
- 41:52Speaker 1: by the bike shop owner, remember that.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I do remember that and everything happened to Dudley or Arnold.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I don't know what happened on Alf,
- 42:01Speaker 1: but I don't know if they made the announcement, it
- 42:02Speaker 1: must have been serious.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Special episode of Alf.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Alf learns to touch himself.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Oh boy, oh boy.
- 42:13Speaker 1: But you can't handle it. I used to have an
- 42:15Speaker 1: alf stuffed animal, and uh, well, never mind without that, man,
- 42:19Speaker 1: it sounded like I fucked the doll. I didn't.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I just I just it did sound like you were
- 42:23Speaker 2: about to say it sounded like you were about to say, yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 2: I fucked the doll.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Did Alf have a tail?
- 42:30Speaker 2: I don't know. No, No, no, he did not.
- 42:32Speaker 4: I don't think so. Well.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Can you please look up if Alf had a tail?
- 42:34Speaker 3: Alf did not have a tail.
- 42:36Speaker 1: You're feeling really confident about that.
- 42:37Speaker 2: You didn't see.
- 42:38Speaker 1: You didn't see Alf's ask that much.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Okay, let's talk about how well Johnny does in this episode.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Yeah, in the monologue, in the monologue section, everybody's great.
- 42:47Speaker 1: In the oh, Joelle, what you look? Your face lit up?
- 42:51Speaker 2: Alf does have a tail?
- 42:57Speaker 1: Donald, You fucking liar.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I just don't remember out for the long terilt.
- 43:03Speaker 5: No, it's like a dog's tail, and it only because
- 43:06Speaker 5: you can see him like he's looking out the window
- 43:08Speaker 5: in a single shot.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Listen, but I want to see if the album.
- 43:11Speaker 2: I barely remember episodes of Scrubs. How am I supposed
- 43:14Speaker 2: to remember Alf?
- 43:16Speaker 1: He does have a tail, so I have a memory.
- 43:19Speaker 1: I think what I was trying to say with the
- 43:20Speaker 1: stuff animals, I used to pull Alf's tail through his
- 43:24Speaker 1: legs to make it look like it was Alb's.
- 43:25Speaker 10: Peenis Oh my gosh, all right, all.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Right is good in this episode? Yes, he's not.
- 43:42Speaker 4: Only that.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Before we do that, let's go back a little bit.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Uh, I didn't know that Kelso's actual name was Kelso Kelso.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Kelsanovitch. Yeah, well, I don't think that comes up again.
- 43:54Speaker 1: But this is the first episode where he introduces his
- 43:56Speaker 1: wife's name, Enid.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Right, And I thought that was just very interesting that,
- 44:01Speaker 2: you know, he changed his name to fit in to
- 44:03Speaker 2: be to sound more American, so instead of kel Sonovich,
- 44:07Speaker 2: it then became Kelso.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I think everybody did, including uh, Donald Faison and Judy
- 44:14Speaker 1: and Sarah. Everybody was great in these monologue sections. They
- 44:18Speaker 1: were Oh, it was kind of a cool. It's funny
- 44:21Speaker 1: because that documentary style became very common in shows like
- 44:23Speaker 1: the Office and a modern family that were doing sort
- 44:27Speaker 1: of the shaky cam documentary style. Was not a style
- 44:30Speaker 1: we did on Scrubs. But because of this segment, I
- 44:33Speaker 1: don't know why the interviewer was so hirky jerky with
- 44:35Speaker 1: the damn camera. I mean, put the fucking thing on
- 44:36Speaker 1: a tripod and calm down.
- 44:37Speaker 2: But it was the.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Interviewer was making like his own shaky cam TV show.
- 44:43Speaker 1: But I thought everyone it seemed like the mandate was
- 44:46Speaker 1: that they were not going to have cuts in them
- 44:47Speaker 1: and they would all be long takes and yeah, and I
- 44:50Speaker 1: thought everyone did a really nice job in those scenes.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Do you call it? They prepared us for that, because
- 44:55Speaker 2: the fact that I knew my lines like that was
- 44:58Speaker 2: very weird yourself. I'm watching it and I'm like, they're
- 45:02Speaker 2: gonna cut soon, because there's no way I remember all
- 45:04Speaker 2: of this.
- 45:06Speaker 7: We talked about it a lot, and we knew it
- 45:09Speaker 7: was gonna be one take. If I remember correctly, those
- 45:12Speaker 7: are half the monologue that we did. I mean, part
- 45:15Speaker 7: of the reason why the episode is so long is
- 45:17Speaker 7: because those chunks. And I remember Johnny c I feel
- 45:20Speaker 7: like he was disappointed because there was another long take.
- 45:25Speaker 4: You know, So even though this episode is what do
- 45:27Speaker 4: We Say?
- 45:28Speaker 7: Twenty four eight twenty eight, twenty eight, I think the
- 45:32Speaker 7: editor's cut was closer to forty.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's a really cool section later on where
- 45:37Speaker 1: Donald and Judy are side by side and they're still
- 45:40Speaker 1: not cutting, so they were able to time out. I
- 45:42Speaker 1: don't know, was Judy in the room reading with you? Donald,
- 45:44Speaker 1: do you remember?
- 45:45Speaker 7: No?
- 45:45Speaker 2: That was it. They gave us earwigs, I think for that, because.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Earwig, for those who don't know, is a tiny ear
- 45:53Speaker 1: piece that goes in your ear that you can't see
- 45:55Speaker 1: the camera can't see.
- 45:56Speaker 2: I remember rehearsing it with the voice track. I think
- 46:01Speaker 2: they recorded Judy first. I could be wrong, though, I
- 46:04Speaker 2: think they recorded Judy first and then I went in
- 46:09Speaker 2: after her to record.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Well, the timing of that was perfect because you you know,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you had to stall, so you were like thinking and
- 46:14Speaker 1: then you took a sip of your water and like
- 46:16Speaker 1: it totally looked natural, but it was. It was well
- 46:18Speaker 1: done by by Larry trilling.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Trilling Man, that was one of the that was one
- 46:22Speaker 2: of the highlights in my notes that I wrote. You know,
- 46:27Speaker 2: this was his first episode to direct for us, and
- 46:29Speaker 2: we gave him a pretty you know, you guys gave
- 46:31Speaker 2: him a big Randall and you and Bill gave him
- 46:34Speaker 2: a pretty big episode to produce. I wondered if it
- 46:37Speaker 2: was ever like, Yo, what money do I get to
- 46:39Speaker 2: make this go easier for me? You know what I mean?
- 46:43Speaker 1: Like, I'm guessing he was told that it was going
- 46:45Speaker 1: to be a long one because right Randall or was
- 46:48Speaker 1: it was decided after the fact.
- 46:51Speaker 4: It was decided after the fact.
- 46:52Speaker 7: We didn't know it was going to come out, but
- 46:53Speaker 7: we knew from timing the table read that we were
- 46:56Speaker 7: up against it and that we didn't want to make
- 46:58Speaker 7: cuts in those you know, soliloquy pieces, you know, directly
- 47:03Speaker 7: to the camera. For some reason, I feel like production wise,
- 47:07Speaker 7: there was just a lot of talk about the pizza clock,
- 47:10Speaker 7: like getting the right angle and how much pizzad it
- 47:12Speaker 7: take out. And you know, we were we were in
- 47:14Speaker 7: that bedroom for so long, which was a tight set.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and Sarah and I, you know, we were friends
- 47:21Speaker 1: and we really loved each other. But that was a
- 47:24Speaker 1: very bizarre thing to have that much fake sex all
- 47:28Speaker 1: over one set for many days on end.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Well, yeah, not just that, you guys were very much
- 47:33Speaker 2: in each other's face. I was going to ask you,
- 47:35Speaker 2: you guys made out a lot in this episode. Yeah,
- 47:38Speaker 2: how awkward was that for you?
- 47:41Speaker 1: I think it was, Uh, you know, you always hear
- 47:45Speaker 1: actors talking about, Oh it's you know, it's all very
- 47:47Speaker 1: you know, choreographed, and it's not weird at all.
- 47:49Speaker 4: It is weird.
- 47:50Speaker 1: You know, there's everyone standing around, you're making out with
- 47:52Speaker 1: your good friend. Uh, it's you know, it was. It
- 47:57Speaker 1: was bizarre. I remember being because also a lot of
- 47:59Speaker 1: most times, like okay, there's a quick makeout scene. It's
- 48:01Speaker 1: a TV show, you know, That's that's all it ever is.
- 48:04Speaker 1: This was like, you know, wrestling around and groping each
- 48:07Speaker 1: other and for days.
- 48:09Speaker 4: So it was.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Weird face to face and not only face.
- 48:14Speaker 1: To fanaka Donald you gotta have Banaka. We had a
- 48:17Speaker 1: boom man named Kevin what was his last name? Randall?
- 48:20Speaker 1: Do you remember?
- 48:22Speaker 4: I can't figure it right now.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Also hires the whole crew everybody, so he should really
- 48:28Speaker 1: know Kevin's last name. But Kevin used to see that
- 48:31Speaker 1: we all used to have banaka. This is like back
- 48:33Speaker 1: in the day still that we had like spray the
- 48:35Speaker 1: aerosol banokam and uh we made a joke like oh,
- 48:38Speaker 1: it'll be great because the boom mike's right over your head.
- 48:40Speaker 1: We're like, it'd be great if there was a boom
- 48:42Speaker 1: if there was banaka on the boom, because then we
- 48:44Speaker 1: can just reach up, pull the boom mic down and
- 48:46Speaker 1: grab it off. Next day we show up and he
- 48:47Speaker 1: had velcrowe a banaka to the end of the boom mic,
- 48:51Speaker 1: not not the mic itself, the stick and poll and
- 48:56Speaker 1: Kevin santy, thank you and uh and and literally he
- 48:59Speaker 1: wasn't just a joke. He kept it up there for
- 49:00Speaker 1: like months, and whenever you need a banaka, you just
- 49:03Speaker 1: reach up, grab the boom pole, pull it off to
- 49:05Speaker 1: a spray. They'll crow it back and stick it off.
- 49:08Speaker 2: I used to go crazy with the banaka because I
- 49:10Speaker 2: felt like, maybe if I spray enough in my mouth
- 49:12Speaker 2: the aarosol and the freaking mint will get me high enough.
- 49:18Speaker 1: When your weed was wearing all, so Donald this weed
- 49:21Speaker 1: had worn off and he was on set too long.
- 49:23Speaker 1: He's like, let me try and get high on baca.
- 49:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:25Speaker 3: I remember one day Randall came into the room.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Randall, tell me if you remember this, and you were
- 49:29Speaker 2: like Donald and we were on set and you were like, Donald,
- 49:32Speaker 2: wake up. Do I need to splash cold water in
- 49:33Speaker 2: your face and something wake the ass up when you.
- 49:36Speaker 3: High or something? No? No, no, no, no no no no.
- 49:43Speaker 3: But in my mind I was like, they.
- 49:45Speaker 5: Know, they know.
- 49:48Speaker 1: It's probably because you were taking too long to get
- 49:50Speaker 1: to set.
- 49:51Speaker 9: No.
- 49:52Speaker 2: The only time I took a long time to get
- 49:53Speaker 2: to set was when Grand Theft Auto Vice City came out.
- 49:56Speaker 2: And I remember one time they were trying to get
- 49:58Speaker 2: me the set and I was on my way out
- 50:00Speaker 2: the door and Randall's pushing my door in as I'm
- 50:03Speaker 2: pulling it, and I was like hi, and he was like,
- 50:07Speaker 2: get upstairs, random.
- 50:12Speaker 1: You had to be bad cop.
- 50:14Speaker 7: I had to get with the gripe. Yeah, grabbing people,
- 50:16Speaker 7: steer them. I remember sending a PA to your house
- 50:18Speaker 7: one time, Zach. Somebody had to climb over the fence
- 50:21Speaker 7: to get you to like, wait, it.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Was a really bad moment. Know what happened was the
- 50:25Speaker 1: power What had happened was the power went out. The
- 50:29Speaker 1: power went out in my in my on my street
- 50:31Speaker 1: or my neighborhood, and so the alarms didn't go off,
- 50:35Speaker 1: and and also the phones didn't work, and so I
- 50:38Speaker 1: woke up to a PA knocking on my window. And
- 50:42Speaker 1: which is the worst sight if you're an actor. It's
- 50:45Speaker 1: like the most horrible feeling. And I remember getting to
- 50:48Speaker 1: set really late and Bill looked at me and he's like, no, no,
- 50:50Speaker 1: don't worry, we'll split the fifty grand.
- 50:55Speaker 7: I think during scrubs I had a real moment of
- 50:58Speaker 7: peace about producing, which was I gave up on the
- 51:02Speaker 7: idea of everything being okay for more than five minutes
- 51:05Speaker 7: at a time, because nothing's ever always okay. It's like,
- 51:10Speaker 7: and nobody comes to my door to be like everything's great.
- 51:16Speaker 7: It's like, you know, somebody took my candy. We don't
- 51:19Speaker 7: have any film. You know, somebody's late.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Did we ever run out of film?
- 51:25Speaker 4: We came, We came close.
- 51:26Speaker 7: We used to a lot of short ends one particular
- 51:28Speaker 7: week because part of the reason that we were able
- 51:32Speaker 7: to fly under the radar financially, and one of the
- 51:35Speaker 7: reasons that that show is one of the last shows
- 51:38Speaker 7: to be on film is because we shot on sixteen.
- 51:42Speaker 7: We shot Super sixteen, not thirty five, So we cut
- 51:44Speaker 7: our production costs, you know, by a lot.
- 51:47Speaker 4: But we made a great print.
- 51:48Speaker 7: I mean, we showed that show on a DJA in
- 51:52Speaker 7: the GGA screening room and held up.
- 51:55Speaker 1: So, yeah, those of you who don't know, this was
- 51:57Speaker 1: one of the last shows still being shot on film,
- 52:00Speaker 1: especially sixteen millimeter film probably at the time. Probably nothing
- 52:04Speaker 1: is right now, I would guess, unless it's like a
- 52:07Speaker 1: big budget feature on Netflix or something. But most people
- 52:11Speaker 1: don't do that anymore anyway. And it's one of the
- 52:13Speaker 1: reasons why people always ask how come there's no blu
- 52:16Speaker 1: ray and high resolution sixteen by nine version of the show.
- 52:22Speaker 1: It's because when we made it, we didn't and we
- 52:24Speaker 1: were done with it. No one anticipated all this streaming stuff,
- 52:27Speaker 1: so it was never like upres to be four K video.
- 52:31Speaker 7: Right, they didn't cut the film and then we do it,
- 52:34Speaker 7: and some of the film that we used you can't
- 52:36Speaker 7: even get anymore. A lot of the flashback scenes I think,
- 52:40Speaker 7: I think you'll see it in season one are shot
- 52:43Speaker 7: on something that was called reversal film, which was like
- 52:47Speaker 7: from the Vietnam War.
- 52:48Speaker 4: It could had this look of Yeah.
- 52:50Speaker 1: That's why they have a specific texture, though in fact
- 52:53Speaker 1: there's different clearly a different film stock being shot for
- 52:56Speaker 1: these interview sequences, because they're very grainy and have a
- 52:59Speaker 1: different color sort of palette than the show itself.
- 53:03Speaker 2: When did we switch When did we switch over to chip?
- 53:05Speaker 2: Then when did we switch over to digital?
- 53:07Speaker 1: Because I know, did you do it in season nine?
- 53:09Speaker 1: It would only be in season nine.
- 53:11Speaker 3: I think it was before season nine, to.
- 53:12Speaker 7: Be honest with you, I don't think so. I mean
- 53:15Speaker 7: because because it was talked about so much shows, because
- 53:19Speaker 7: NBC had made this mandate that everybody was going digital.
- 53:21Speaker 7: But then when they looked at our numbers, they were like, hey,
- 53:23Speaker 7: keep doing what you're doing. Like I think, I think
- 53:26Speaker 7: maybe in that season nine we went digital, Like I
- 53:28Speaker 7: honestly can't remember us the top of my head.
- 53:30Speaker 3: I remember that.
- 53:31Speaker 2: I remember that that was very interesting when you would
- 53:33Speaker 2: see them changing mags or somebody getting the film ready
- 53:38Speaker 2: for the day and having to put the film in
- 53:40Speaker 2: a mag so that it could fit on the camera
- 53:44Speaker 2: and reaching into this like bag. It looked like a bag,
- 53:48Speaker 2: is what it looked like.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Well, it was a picture like a miniature camping tent
- 53:52Speaker 1: that like that would fit on a desktop and it
- 53:55Speaker 1: was blacked out so that they could put their hands
- 53:57Speaker 1: in there and not expose the film while loading them
- 54:00Speaker 1: of camera magazines.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Right, I used to I used to be like, I
- 54:03Speaker 2: remember when we switched over to I guess it was
- 54:06Speaker 2: season nine where we switched over to Chip and I
- 54:08Speaker 2: remember being like, this is the easiest thing in the world.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Why didn't we do this before? Like we could do
- 54:13Speaker 2: takes for days and days and days. All I remember
- 54:18Speaker 2: all my fuck ups, every time I missed a line
- 54:21Speaker 2: or forgot a line and everything like that. I remember
- 54:23Speaker 2: being like, how much how much more room do we
- 54:26Speaker 2: have on the mag before before you know what I mean,
- 54:29Speaker 2: before we're out and we have to and we have
- 54:30Speaker 2: to change the mag again.
- 54:32Speaker 1: You'd have eleven you'd have about eleven minutes on a
- 54:34Speaker 1: sixty millimeter magazine and uh and and you'd be like
- 54:37Speaker 1: trying to trying to get it, be like, how much
- 54:39Speaker 1: how much more fun we got before you roll out?
- 54:40Speaker 1: I got it? I got I got it.
- 54:42Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Let's don't go. You can go forever.
- 54:44Speaker 3: Now you'd be like, don't cut, don't cut. We gotta cut,
- 54:46Speaker 3: we gotta cut. We only got like nineteen feet all right.
- 54:48Speaker 1: If I cut. When I say to Sarah, we're gonna
- 54:53Speaker 1: need a stool sample not for medical reasons, my robot
- 54:56Speaker 1: needs food. I made that, I'm proud to say, and
- 55:01Speaker 1: Sarah cracked up at it. And it's so random and weird,
- 55:05Speaker 1: but I love it. Okay, I gotta feed my robot. Yes,
- 55:09Speaker 1: poo pooh.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Yeah, nobody's pooh, patient pooh, patient poof for the rover.
- 55:15Speaker 4: It all comes down to pooh.
- 55:16Speaker 1: And I laughed out loud when Sarah is seventeen oh four.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Sarah is making fun of my laugh because she's like
- 55:22Speaker 1: already over me, and she's.
- 55:23Speaker 7: Like, yeah, oh my god, that is so funny that
- 55:27Speaker 7: she does a funny impression of you, because I mean
- 55:31Speaker 7: that laugh has got a lot of genuine laughs with
- 55:35Speaker 7: the silly JD laugh all through the season.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:38Speaker 2: I feel like that's how every I think that's how
- 55:40Speaker 2: every relationship should be.
- 55:41Speaker 3: What you see is what you get, you know what
- 55:43Speaker 3: I mean.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Unfortunately, unfortunately what you see and what you get sometimes
- 55:49Speaker 2: you think you want it, and then eventually it makes
- 55:52Speaker 2: you want to kill the person what it turns out
- 55:54Speaker 2: to turns out to be. With Elliott and JD, she
- 55:56Speaker 2: loved the laugh in the beginning, Oh, I love it
- 55:59Speaker 2: so cute, and then at the end of the show
- 56:02Speaker 2: she's like, fuck that laugh, dude.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Laugh like that again one more time. I dare you.
- 56:08Speaker 1: It's like, say what again?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Say again, motherfucker, say what one more time?
- 56:13Speaker 1: I know I hear you. Isn't that so sad though?
- 56:15Speaker 1: When a relationship goes sour and all the things you
- 56:17Speaker 1: thought were so adorable you now just fucking hate.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that was my life back in the day. Oh,
- 56:24Speaker 2: he's got such potential.
- 56:26Speaker 1: We have some guests here, Randall. So we have a
- 56:29Speaker 1: guest that come on the show. Randal, I know that
- 56:31Speaker 1: you don't listen to the podcast.
- 56:32Speaker 2: So Randall listens to the podcast.
- 56:35Speaker 1: He does. I don't, ye he does.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Yeah he does.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Because somebody was like, yo, they talked about you on
- 56:39Speaker 2: the podcast the other.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that means that means that Randall was told by
- 56:43Speaker 1: someone and he went and listened to one.
- 56:45Speaker 3: He was like, oh they got a podcast.
- 56:48Speaker 2: To check that out.
- 56:48Speaker 7: Oh, somebody's on the podcast.
- 56:52Speaker 4: They talked his real friends. I was like, oh.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Nice, Hey, yeah, I got shut out.
- 56:57Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna go to a break and when
- 56:58Speaker 2: we come back, we'll have our guests.
- 57:07Speaker 1: So Randall, when we do the commercial breaks and the
- 57:10Speaker 1: song comes back, it doesn't have them. A lot of
- 57:13Speaker 1: a lot of our fans like to add their own.
- 57:16Speaker 1: That's part of Barbara, Robbie, Barbara and Robbie, are.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Twins one of your doctor?
- 57:27Speaker 1: My god, things are getting weird, you guys. Two different
- 57:30Speaker 1: women have entered and they appear to be identical twins
- 57:33Speaker 1: in different parts of the world.
- 57:35Speaker 3: Where you guys call it from.
- 57:36Speaker 11: I'm calling from UK, in the UK, and.
- 57:42Speaker 3: You're so you guys. Are you a doctor?
- 57:47Speaker 11: Yes, I am, Yes, I am, but I'm not working yet.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:51Speaker 11: I had some problems for coronavirus which delayed some technical issues.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 57:59Speaker 3: And then Robbie, what about you? Are you a doctor too?
- 58:03Speaker 2: No?
- 58:03Speaker 12: No, I got doited in law last February.
- 58:07Speaker 3: So you've got a lawyer and a doctor.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Your parents will be very happy, very proud.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:13Speaker 12: And last time we saw each other was at the
- 58:16Speaker 12: beginning of March when I brought Bobby to the airport
- 58:21Speaker 12: to take her flight to go to the UK and
- 58:24Speaker 12: move there.
- 58:25Speaker 1: So you've been apart for a long time. I just
- 58:27Speaker 1: miss each other.
- 58:28Speaker 11: Yes, a lot, a lot. That's why I also asked
- 58:31Speaker 11: you to do this meeting because I knew that it
- 58:36Speaker 11: was very important to her. It is important also for me.
- 58:39Speaker 11: But she had a very rough time, so oh well, we're.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Here to cheer her up. I'm so glad that you
- 58:44Speaker 1: called in, because not only do you have the legendary
- 58:46Speaker 1: Donald Faizon here and he's always funny, you have Randall Winston,
- 58:50Speaker 1: who was our line producer but you may know him
- 58:53Speaker 1: as Leonard the security guard. And also he played Death
- 58:56Speaker 1: and you know, we've gotten a lot of questions for
- 58:59Speaker 1: Death on our Instagram pages. So finally you can ask
- 59:04Speaker 1: Death any question you have.
- 59:06Speaker 4: Oh, that's wonderful.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Played much Mouth from the Yeah, you did play much
- 59:14Speaker 2: mouth from Freaking the Fat Out Jump.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Yes, different, you had three different parts.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Rand you had that big ass helmet on your head too,
- 59:26Speaker 2: all right, So let's get it.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Go ahead, ladies, ask a question.
- 59:29Speaker 12: I would like to start it because I am in
- 59:31Speaker 12: a theater company as well, so sometimes we argue about
- 59:36Speaker 12: the best ways to perform. You know, when you have
- 59:40Speaker 12: to feel in character and you have to feel what
- 59:45Speaker 12: your character is feeling in order to act. So I
- 59:50Speaker 12: was wondering whether sometimes you had some difficulties with that
- 59:55Speaker 12: and to make a very strange scene you couldn't really
- 1:00:00Speaker 12: feel what JD or Turk or Death or Leonard.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Thank you, Bobby, thank you for including him.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: My pleasure.
- 1:00:12Speaker 12: So if you had to find some strange way to perform.
- 1:00:17Speaker 12: I thought about this question when I was listening to
- 1:00:20Speaker 12: your podcast last week, and Donald said when he had
- 1:00:24Speaker 12: to memorize the line you need the surgical counsole, so
- 1:00:28Speaker 12: you had to make a song about it. So if
- 1:00:33Speaker 12: if my question is not about memorizing things, it's more
- 1:00:37Speaker 12: about like acting the feeling.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, you know, let Leonard go first.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: When I strapped on the arm.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Here's here's the thing. You you work hard.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: You work so hard to try to feel everything, and
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: that's what comes with being an actor. You're gonna work
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: hard hard and you've ever worked in your life to
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: try to feel it. But when the camera rolls and
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: you don't feel it, you better act the shit out
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: of it, you know what I mean, Because at the
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: end of the day, it still has to be made.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: So you're gonna work your hard is to try and
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: feel the emotion and find the emotion and pinpoint what
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: it is that you're You know, you'll make notes and
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: you'll do all of that stuff, but there comes a
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: time when you're doing it where all of that preparation
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: and stuff isn't helping, you know what I mean. And
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: so when it's not helping, it's time for you to
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: act the shit out of it. And that's just how
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: it goes, you know what I mean.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I would say there's times when it's really just natural,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and then there's times where it feels forced and you
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: don't feel present. You can see the cameraman and you
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: can see the crew, and your stomach's growling because you're hungry,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: and you know, you had an argument with someone in
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: your family and all these things that happen in any job,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and you and you're in your head and you're distracted,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and the trick with acting is to always be as
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: present as possible. The good news about acting on film
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: and tell vision is you really only need to do
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: it in spurts because you're you're you're trying to shine
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: for your other actor, but also when the camera's on you,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: when it's on when you're no matter what the shot is.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: When you're doing a play, you have to maintain that
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: for for two hours and and scene real. But with
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: with film and TV acting, the real challenge is to
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: get it in spurts enough so that it will cut
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: together and be believable. But but yeah, it can be
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: really it can be really challenging, especially when you're there's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: so much distraction. You know, there's phones ringing, and there's
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: a helicopter overhead, and and you're upset about something in
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: your private life. You know, it's it's it's a real
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: challenge to do everything you can to be present in
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: the moment.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: And when you can't be present, that's what that's what
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: acting is.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Then you fake it till you make it.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Fake it till you make it.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Now, Randall, when you were playing Leonard, did you did?
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: You didn't? Didn't Leonard have a love interest? By the way, Oh?
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: Yes, I had to.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: It was a scene.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: Yes she was.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Uh And wasn't she a fellow security guarden?
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: No, no, she was. Maybe she was a candy striper
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: or something.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: I just.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Oh, Robbie knows she was an old Yes, take that
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: was I had to. Were you open mouth kissing her?
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: That was specifically requested.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: By her? Was it in the script?
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: That parts a little foggy.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: But you know, I think Robbie's question, how did you
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: maintain being president in the moment when you were kissing
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: the senior citizen?
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: You know what, Robbie, I should have been listening and
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: I've been listening to her.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you were listening to her mouth. Okay, ladies, good question, Yes,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: go ahead with another one. Donald left he was so
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: offended by that question he left.
- 1:04:04Speaker 11: Okay. So my question is, we watched Scrubs a lot
- 1:04:08Speaker 11: of time, and the first time we watched it we
- 1:04:11Speaker 11: were just teenagers, and so we watched it in Italian.
- 1:04:15Speaker 11: So I wondered, have you ever listened to yourself dubbed
- 1:04:19Speaker 11: in other languages such as Alan or Spanish or Japanese.
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate how they dubbed me in Spanish and
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Italian and stuff like that.
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: I never have a deep voice.
- 1:04:29Speaker 13: I'm always like, yeah, I prefer your voice.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: You know. It's funny is that in most countries, when
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you become a known actor, they pick the same actor
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: to always do you. So if Donald's in one, if
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: he's in Scrubs and then he goes off to do
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: another film that is not even to do with Scrubs,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: it's usually the same actor being Donald. And I hate that.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: I hate that that one person is like, oh, oh no,
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: was he playing in this?
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: Oh don't worry about it. I did him on Scrubs.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: I got this.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: So to Donald's to Donald's dismay, that voice will always
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: be his voice.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: That pisses me off.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I have. I've heard myself in almost so many
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: voices traveling around there, especially when the show was on NonStop.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: We'd travel around the world and you turn on the
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: TV and there you were speaking German. It was very funny.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I remember. Uh, then there was a thing where we
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: had Germans in the show Herman the German right with
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: the with the balloon things, none of that. And then
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I remember in Germany they had to change where they
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: were from because it made no sense that their language
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: was different, like you know, so you know, like think
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: about it. If the show has a character that's speaking
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: of the language, and all of a sudden, the show's
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: dubbed into that language, they then have to switch that
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: person's language, so it doesn't make sense.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: I think we made them Belgium.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Yes, I think you're right. N Randall. How do you
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: feel as being dubbed as Death and Leonard.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: As long as my fan base? All?
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Did you ever hear?
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Have you ever heard yourself dubbed in other languages?
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: Randall? I have not.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: The good thing about dubbing Death is that you don't
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: see his mouth moves, so it doesn't look bad.
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: I prefer subtitles, but they don't. They don't do that.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: A lot of countries just dub it.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I don't prefer subtitles. I do not like subtitles.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: You know you'd rather be dubbed.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a I'm a very poor reader. So having
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: to read subtitles.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Does your poor screen? Does your dyslexia? I've never asked
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: you this before, but does that make you less likely
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: to watch subtitled films?
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: Uh?
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: No, you know a good movie is a good movie,
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: no matter what, even with a learning disability, even if
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: it is written on the screen. My dyslexia isn't so
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: bad that I can't keep up right.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I just never asked you. I wondered if you if
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: you said, ah, fuck, it's be paying the ass for
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: me to read these subtitles, or no.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: I would I would prefer not to read. I'd prefer
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: to listen to a dubbed mix.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Right, got it?
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: Do you guys have another question?
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Oh, you're giving them three because they're separated sisters.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: They're separated sisters.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: This is the first time they've talked to each other
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: since March.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Right, they're using us. They don't care about scrubs. They
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: just want to, you know, get on our zoom and
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: talk to each other.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Like I did a show back in a day called
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: free to Be a Family, and we did a space
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: bridge to Russia and this is like our space bridge
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: between the UK and Italy.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Was that like to be? Was that like free to
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: be you and me?
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: It was free to be you and me.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: We're gonna have to see free to be you and
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: me songs one day.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: We're free to be I could say in a Russian
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: glee wee wheat e e t t e glee weeat
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: nois sennoi. Right, wow, We're free to be you and me.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: You and me were free to be a family.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I only know a little Russian from the Billy Joel
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Coleopt album when he played and he said Milly Joe
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: and the crowd went crazy.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I know that because I got to wrap We're free
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: to be you and me with the Fat Boys. There
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: a lot of people don't remember the Fat Boys, but
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: one of them was an amazing beat boxer, and he
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: beat boxed while I rapped.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: Anyway, So if you guys have.
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: Another you ever answer any any any calls on the
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: scrubs phone, that were from out of the country.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: No, I never.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Answered any When we did this episode with Call Turk
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: and we had cal Turk, we had to get a
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: real phone line, and Bill thought it would be I
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: don't know if it was you or Bill Randall, but said,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: you know, rather than do a five five five number,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: let's get a real number and have it all ring
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: on a cell phone. And so the cell phone was
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: in the Scrubs production office and it would just ring
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: all the time. And when you were randomly just walking
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: through and you had a minute to kill, you just
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: answer it and talk to fans because it would just
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: ring NonStop.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Stop for like five years.
- 1:09:02Speaker 7: And we kep the map and we put pins in it,
- 1:09:04Speaker 7: you know, every time we would get calls.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was cool. It's all over the world. All right, ladies,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: one last question, go ahead.
- 1:09:12Speaker 13: That's the thing.
- 1:09:13Speaker 12: I started to really watch the show as well during
- 1:09:17Speaker 12: this quarantine because my boyfriend was with me and he
- 1:09:20Speaker 12: never watched Scrubs before, so I wanted to rewatch it
- 1:09:23Speaker 12: with him, and we watched it on Amazon Prime. And
- 1:09:27Speaker 12: I noticed the thing that you mentioned sometimes in the
- 1:09:30Speaker 12: podcast that they changed a few songs, especially one. It
- 1:09:34Speaker 12: really pissed me off they changed it. It was the
- 1:09:36Speaker 12: one in the second season when j D and Elliott
- 1:09:39Speaker 12: kiss again and they start again and it's dreaming of You,
- 1:09:45Speaker 12: of the choral and I was so waiting for that scene,
- 1:09:51Speaker 12: and when it arrived, the song was a different one.
- 1:09:53Speaker 11: So I was so pissed off.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: And we are too.
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:09:58Speaker 12: So I it's wondering whether you have some one song
- 1:10:03Speaker 12: or two that you really really like and you're attached
- 1:10:07Speaker 12: to it, you know, in one seat of Scrubs, and
- 1:10:11Speaker 12: you would really be angry if someone changed.
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Good question.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, anytime Josh Rayden did music on the show,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: if that got taken off of the show, I would
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: be very upset. One because Josh is a very close
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: body of mine. And two his songs it seems like
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: were made for the episodes of Scrubs, you know what
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: I mean. Like, I don't know if Zach and Josh
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: had a thing where Zach would be like, yo, I
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: need you to write a song about this, and he'd
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: be like, I got it.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: No.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: But I mean the example that comes to mind the
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: same thing with me is is Robbie is Josh's song?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Because you know, we've told this on the podcast before.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: But when he wrote that song Winter that played at
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Benefaer's character's funeral, it was the first song you'd ever written,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: like he didn't have. Everyone was like, oh my god,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: this is amazing. Where's your album? He's like, album, this
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: is the only ting ever written. So that one was
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: particularly special to all of us because Josh was our friend.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: He started playing guitar late in life. He wasn't someone
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: who played as a kid, and all of a sudden,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you know, with the thanks to Bill putting him on
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: the show, his career blew up and he travels, you know,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: when the world is not under lockdown. He travels all
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: around the world. And you guy should see him when
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: he comes to Italy because you'll see you recognize a
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: lot of his music that was in scrubs. Another person
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I want to just mention was Colin Hay, who was
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: really special for the show. And we're trying to get brandall.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I need your help. By the way, the fans are
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: all listening, Yes, I need to get Colin's information because
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: we'd like to have him on for the episode he
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: was on in season two.
- 1:11:45Speaker 7: Okay, I get you. Whatever I had is my last contact.
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: But Colin was a real friend of the show and
- 1:11:51Speaker 7: fun and funny and had a good sense of humor
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: about himself. There was a song I think it's in
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: this season, the Christmas episode in Donald you are running
- 1:12:00Speaker 7: and we play Centerman. Yeah, that song was super powerful
- 1:12:04Speaker 7: in the episode. And and we were all disappointed when
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: songs got changed out, particularly in those first couple of seasons,
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: because we were sort of like the bastard step child
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: over there and like always held to a very strict,
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: low budget number. We licensed a lot of songs not
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: for forever. You know, when you license a song may
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: have something called in perpetuity and all of the media
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: that is now known or yet to be figured out,
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: and you can keep the song in. So there's one
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: and two. The music wasn't licensed that way, so we
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: had to make some of those decisions about which they.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Say, I always assumed it was that I didn't know.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: What you're implying is that as the seasons go on,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: you then did shot started doing contracts that would cover streaming,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: but no one knew what streaming was at.
- 1:12:51Speaker 14: The time, exactly exactly, So like that first couple of seasons,
- 1:12:56Speaker 14: the first couple of seasons, if the licensing has run
- 1:12:58Speaker 14: out and then and didn't renegotiate or sign on to
- 1:13:04Speaker 14: continue the licensing.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: The network automatically just changed the song.
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:13:09Speaker 7: I mean I actually had to sit with music editor
- 1:13:12Speaker 7: and music licensing for like a week or so after
- 1:13:16Speaker 7: the seasons were over in the summertime to figure out
- 1:13:19Speaker 7: like what songs were. Oh.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I always wondered who was who was putting these songs on.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: We've we talked about that on the podcast that you
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: don't listen to, But we always wondered, what what intern
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: what intern somewhere is choosing these like second best songs.
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: It's it was an exercise and killing babies like everything.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: It was great.
- 1:13:39Speaker 7: But they're like, they're like, you absolutely cannot have all
- 1:13:42Speaker 7: of this. You know what do you want to say?
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: You're not gonna have Center Man forever. Wow, all right, ladies,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: we have to move on because death has to take
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: his kids swimming. And but thank you. I I'm sorry
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: that you're I feel sad that your two sisters that
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: are separated. That's horrible.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Is there anything you want to say to each other?
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Is there anything want to say to each other? While
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: everyone's listening.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: It's a free call ye.
- 1:14:09Speaker 12: We actually rehearsed it before. Can we take a picture
- 1:14:16Speaker 12: with you?
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Yes, of course.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Let me just get fresh for you.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: Let me get fresh. Here we go.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, Thank you, lady so much, thank
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: you be saying so much. Nineteen oh nine, in the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Bowling Alley, two people on the left side of the
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: screen spike the lens looked directly into the camera. I'm
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: not sure.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: Oh my god, the Bowling Alley.
- 1:14:38Speaker 7: Is that not the day when our prop man got
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: stuck in the under Yes, it is.
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: It does to retrieve the ball that he reached it.
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: It was proper set.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Or Patrick, my name Patrick Bolton.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: No, it wasn't.
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: Wasn't because it was somebody who we laughed at much
- 1:14:56Speaker 7: longer before we helped him. It was because the th
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: the thing came down on him and we thought it
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: was hilarious. It was like a cartoon. You just saw's
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: legs kick it, and then suddenly somebody was like, oh
- 1:15:06Speaker 7: my god, we.
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: Should probably take get him out of there.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: I remember. He wasn't with us very much longer after that, either.
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: He was.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Soon after he hid rowdy in the ceiling.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: He went to that guy.
- 1:15:22Speaker 7: That guy went to uh, Jimmy Kimmel.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: Ah, Okay, So anyway, two people at the bowling Eye,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: look right in the lens. If you're interested in your
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: in your new hobby of finding people who spiked the lens.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Donald you say, my baby knows how to knock him down.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: That was funny.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: My baby does know.
- 1:15:38Speaker 7: Not.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: That was a lot of fun I don't remember.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: Okay, like most episodes we've watched so far, when watching this,
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: I didn't remember any of it, and I thought that
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: was the cutest thing. I thought Turk and Carla was
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: so cute and so on point for the joke when
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: JD's like, you know, couples go through this, this is
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: what happens. Name show me a happy couple. And then
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: right the way you see Turk and Carla enjoying themselves. Yeah, yes,
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: that was wonderful.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: And they're so sweet together. I mean you just you
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: just love them. And then especially of course when you
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: cut to the documentary footage thing and they're you know,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: and they're being so adorable and and and both saying
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: how much they love each other.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: No, and you're rooting for them yeah yeah, yeah, and
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: not necessarily for Elliott and j D. In this episode,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: even though it starts off where you're rooting for them,
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: you can tell, uh, once it gets to the bad times,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: you're like, wow, these guys really aren't good for each other.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Went sour so quick though, very well, you only have
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: a half an hour to tell the story.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: No, I'm saying like, in the world of the show,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: they dated for like in two weeks and then they
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: were like, this isn't working.
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: But I think that was acision by Bill because he wanted,
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: you know, he didn't want to have that protracted Will
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: they yeah, will they won't? The friends thing, you know.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Then he ended up doing it anyway.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Yes, well, but that's the works well even at the end, right,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: but even at the end of the episode, you say,
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: you know that the therap do I think it'll work?
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: And JD's right. JD's right, it does work. It just
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: doesn't work at that moment in time. In the long run,
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: in the in the grand scheme of things, these two
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: are meant to be together.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: So sad though I was, I was sad watching it
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: that the two people who love each other who can't
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I'm just a sucker for unrequited love and and love
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: that cannot be and here's two people that we want
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: to be together but they can't.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: But that's when Harry met Sally. Like you said, that's it,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: That's when Harry met Sally all over again, you know
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: what I mean. Like, that's such one of my favorite
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: that's first of all, one of my favorite movies Billy
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Crystal and Meg Ryan.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: But that story is great, you know.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: It reminds me of that Fiona Apple lyric when she says,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: only kisses on the cheek from now on, and.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: In a littlely they have wave no, no, baby, all right,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: if I need you, I'll just use your simple name.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Keep going. Finish it.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Only kisses on the cheek from now on and in
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: a little while, we'll only have to wave.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: That's so fucked up. They don't have to wave. Hey,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: how you doing?
