• 2:34
Speaker 2: at any given time some power powerful storms could pop up,
• 2:37
Speaker 2: as we just saw here in Charleston. I mean it
• 2:41
Speaker 2: was like a major, major downpour that came through about
• 2:45
Speaker 2: ten to fifteen minutes or so here in Charleston. There
• 2:47
Speaker 2: is going to be some clearing late in the day
• 2:50
Speaker 2: and things looking pretty decent for the weekend. It's going
• 2:53
Speaker 2: to be really hot by the time Sunday rolls around.

Speaker 2: Me please pet of the Week coming up here in
• 3:05
Speaker 2: the comple of moments. But I mentioned him earlier and
• 3:06
Speaker 2: he's just coming to the studio today. It's our good friend,
• 3:09
Speaker 2: Tony the Taylor. How you doing, my friend?
• 3:10
Speaker 3: Good morning Dave. How are you?
• 3:11
Speaker 2: I'm doing fine, Thank you for being here. You just
• 3:13
Speaker 2: can't get this radio thing out of your system, can you?
• 3:16
Speaker 3: Well? I had a radio and TV career in uh
• 3:20
Speaker 3: my junior year of high school, oh BMTL Charleston High
• 3:24
Speaker 3: and we came in second place in Marshall's competition. I
• 3:28
Speaker 3: had area for high school broadcast.
• 3:29
Speaker 2: Look at you. You want a job? Uh no, okay,
• 3:33
Speaker 2: maybe I just thought, I mean, you know, I work cheap. Yeah,
• 3:36
Speaker 2: you know, okay, So I fit in right here, Yeah,
• 3:39
Speaker 2: exactly exactly. Let's bring in Angie Gillenwater. Can all trusty
• 3:42
Speaker 2: main association with this week's almost having interiors Adopt me please,
• 3:45
Speaker 2: Pet of the week. Good morning Angie, and happy Friday,
• 3:48
  Speaker 2: and good morning.
• 3:49
Speaker 5: I'm happy to be back.
• 3:50
Speaker 2: And uh yeah, because you were away with us last week.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: You were taking care of some stuff and uh uh
• 3:55
Speaker 2: but uh, Elena Allen, no relation.
• 3:58
  Speaker 3: Did a.
• 3:59
Speaker 2: Did A did a very job of filling in, and
• 4:01
Speaker 2: so I appreciate her for doing that. Tony the Taylor's
• 4:03
Speaker 2: here with me as well, So I just I just
• 4:05
Speaker 2: like to warn the guests that Tony de Taylor's good morning, Angie,
• 4:09
Speaker 2: good morning. All right. So we got our picture of
• 4:12
Speaker 2: our pet of the week posted Dave aland Radio on
• 4:15
Speaker 2: Facebook at the WCHS Network Facebook page and on my
• 4:18
Speaker 2: ex page as well. Tell us about Violet.
• 4:22
Speaker 5: So Violet is a special dog for me personally. Violet
• 4:26
Speaker 5: actually has been at KHA pretty much since I started
• 4:30
Speaker 5: my career upstairs in the shelter environment. She has been
• 4:35
Speaker 5: in and out of Kha's doors for any every bit
• 4:38
Speaker 5: of four years. She just keeps finding a bad look
• 4:43
Speaker 5: in these adopted homes, whether they're moving, whether their other
• 4:46
Speaker 5: pet doesn't like her, whether the housing situation changes and
• 4:50
Speaker 5: they're not no longer allowed to have pets. So Violet
• 4:54
Speaker 5: is somebody near and dear to my heart. She's about
• 4:56
Speaker 5: five years old. She's great with other dogs and loves
• 4:59
Speaker 5: the play with other dogs. She's also great with kids.
• 5:03
Speaker 5: One fun fact about Violet though, is that she is deaf,
• 5:07
Speaker 5: so you'll want to make sure that your kids are
• 5:10
Speaker 5: maybe a little bit older that way, they're not moving
• 5:13
Speaker 5: around and startling her in a certain a certain way,
• 5:16
Speaker 5: because again, she can't hear noises that are around her.
• 5:19
Speaker 2: Okay, what kind of special challenges come with is I've
• 5:24
Speaker 2: never had a death pet? What what kind of special
• 5:27
Speaker 2: challenges come with having a death pet?
• 5:30
Speaker 5: So there is a specific training protocol that you would
• 5:32
Speaker 5: want to use. What is really cool, and I'm really
• 5:35
Speaker 5: excited to share this is animals can also interpret sign
• 5:38
Speaker 5: language the same way that people can. So rather than
• 5:41
Speaker 5: using your voice to give Violet commands, you could, in
• 5:45
Speaker 5: theory you sign language. The only one that she knows
• 5:47
Speaker 5: right now from us and from previous adopters is sit
• 5:51
Speaker 5: in sign language. But she you know, you can train
• 5:55
Speaker 5: her with an entire matrix of commands if you'd like to.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: Well, that's that's cool. I did not know that, Tony
• 6:00
  Speaker 2: did that.
• 6:01
  Speaker 3: Fascinating.
• 6:02
Speaker 2: I did not know that.
• 6:03
Speaker 3: So you have to learn sign range first, then teach
• 6:04
  Speaker 3: the dogs then.
• 6:07
Speaker 2: And it's very unfortunate because from what you were telling me,
• 6:10
Speaker 2: she is a very very sweet dog and she's good
• 6:13
Speaker 2: with other dogs, and she seems to love kids. But
• 6:16
Speaker 2: I mean it's I would love to try to find
• 6:17
Speaker 2: her home. What kind of dog is she?
• 6:20
Speaker 5: So I would say she's going to be like a
• 6:21
Speaker 5: bully pity mix. She's just got like that real big
• 6:25
  Speaker 5: blocky head.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: She looks she looks like the target dog Tanda.
• 6:29
Speaker 5: Yeah, she absolutely does.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: All right, all right, all right, so, uh, I want
• 6:34
Speaker 2: to get to a couple other things and we'll get
• 6:35
Speaker 2: back to uh our adopt me please Pet of the Week,
• 6:38
Speaker 2: uh Kegs for Canines is coming up.
• 6:41
Speaker 5: It is it is approaching fast. I think not next week,
• 6:44
Speaker 5: but week after next it will be time for it.
• 6:47
Speaker 5: Get your tickets before they sell out again. Drinking beer,
• 6:50
Speaker 5: petting dogs. And it's a good cause for Kha and
• 6:54
Speaker 5: animals and needs, so it couldn't it couldn't be easier.
• 6:57
Speaker 2: And it's over the Red Carpet Lounge. And what time
• 6:59
  Speaker 2: does it start?
• 7:01
Speaker 5: See you asked me too fast?
• 7:03
Speaker 2: Okay, Well it's some time in the afternoon and the
• 7:05
Speaker 2: information is available on the page, so you can go
• 7:07
Speaker 2: check it out. And how are tickets going, because tickets normally,
• 7:09
Speaker 2: I mean this thing sells out.
• 7:12
Speaker 5: So they are there are still a lot of tickets available,
• 7:15
Speaker 5: we have not told as many as.
• 7:16
Speaker 6: We would like to.
• 7:18
Speaker 5: And again, like I said, every ticket sold helps the
• 7:21
Speaker 5: animals and need at KHA. So even if you are
• 7:24
Speaker 5: busy that Saturday, buy a ticket.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: Well, and uh, you actually have pets on site there.
• 7:30
Speaker 2: You bring the what is he called the cara van
• 7:34
Speaker 2: of with the animals in it, and they're in an
• 7:36
Speaker 2: air conditioned environment there and you can actually go on
• 7:39
Speaker 2: the trailer there look at the animals and as you said,
• 7:42
Speaker 2: you're drinking beer and playing with dogs. I mean that's
• 7:45
Speaker 2: a pretty good Saturday afternoon. And by that time we'll
• 7:47
Speaker 2: have some college football on. So it's a red carpet lounge.
• 7:50
Speaker 2: I know they're going to have TVs up there, so
• 7:52
  Speaker 2: if there's a particular game you're interested in, you won't
• 7:53
Speaker 2: miss it. You can come in great food, uh and
• 7:56
Speaker 2: and it's all it's all for a great cause. And
• 7:58
Speaker 2: just go to your website to get because that's the
• 8:00
Speaker 2: best way to do it.
• 8:02
Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely, Do you want a job with us because
• 8:04
Speaker 5: you just sold it way better than I ever.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Well, Tony, you ever been kekes for canines? Guess what?
• 8:10
Speaker 3: Yes? I mean. I was involved in promotions at Red
• 8:13
Speaker 3: Carver Lounge for a long time, and it's one of
• 8:14
Speaker 3: the greatest promotions and it's fun and yeah again drinking beer,
• 8:18
Speaker 3: eating chicken, wings, TV and great dogs.
• 8:21
Speaker 2: What more could you want?
• 8:22
  Speaker 5: Now?
• 8:22
Speaker 2: And again it's going to be coming up.
• 8:23
  Speaker 3: What's the date?
• 8:24
Speaker 2: August the twenty ninth is?
• 8:26
  Speaker 5: Is that?
• 8:26
Speaker 3: What the date is?
• 8:27
  Speaker 7: Yeah?
• 8:28
Speaker 2: I believe it is August twenty SECA look at a calendar. Yeah, yeah,
• 8:31
Speaker 2: it is August twenty ninth, Saturday afternoon. To get information
• 8:34
Speaker 2: available on your social media and also on your website
• 8:38
Speaker 2: as well. I want to quickly talk about senior pets.
• 8:40
Speaker 2: You have some stuff posted on your page about this
• 8:42
Speaker 2: Pathways Home Grant and Gray Muzzle. I love that name.
• 8:48
Speaker 2: Tell me about that.
• 8:50
Speaker 5: So senior pets in a shelter environment, they have a
• 8:54
Speaker 5: different matrix and needs than what your typical shelter pets
• 8:58
Speaker 5: are going to have, whether it be help care, whether
• 9:00
Speaker 5: it be stress levels, it's just there's a different handout
• 9:07
Speaker 5: type of situation for them. So a project like Gray
• 9:11
Speaker 5: Muzzle Grant, they offer assistance to help us either place
• 9:16
Speaker 5: these animals, treat medical needs, whatever the case is. And
• 9:20
Speaker 5: right now our shelter has several senior pets in need,
• 9:25
Speaker 5: and before we ask an adoptor to take on a
• 9:27
Speaker 5: huge medical bill or any type of need that this
• 9:30
Speaker 5: animal may have, we're able to prep them via grants
• 9:34
Speaker 5: like this for success in their new homes, in turn
• 9:38
Speaker 5: helping adopters retain pets more often than what they would
• 9:41
Speaker 5: in case they run into like a medical need that
• 9:43
Speaker 5: the senior pet may have, or you know, whatever the
• 9:46
Speaker 5: case may be. We're super thankful.
• 9:48
Speaker 2: There's nothing more sad to me than when I hear
• 9:50
Speaker 2: these stories about these senior pets that have been at
• 9:52
Speaker 2: the shelter for so long, you know, and of course
• 9:56
Speaker 2: you kind of play on the heartstrings a little bit,
• 9:58
Speaker 2: but you know, it's like they come in, everybody wants
• 10:00
Speaker 2: the puppy and everybody wants the kitten. And look, we
• 10:02
Speaker 2: love people adopting the pets no matter what they're doing,
• 10:05
Speaker 2: but give give these older ones a shot, I mean,
• 10:08
  Speaker 2: because it's it's just it's when when we when I
• 10:11
Speaker 2: see the stories on your social media, Angie, where somebody
• 10:15
Speaker 2: like the longest serving resident you know, just got sprung
• 10:19
Speaker 2: and they're going home with the family. Yeah, that's good
• 10:21
  Speaker 2: stuff right there.
• 10:23
Speaker 5: It absolutely is. Right now, one that comes to mind,
• 10:27
Speaker 5: is a senior pet named Freddie. If you're also Violet's
• 10:29
Speaker 5: not your gal, think of Freddie. Owner had passed away
• 10:33
Speaker 5: and he has been with us for a little around
• 10:35
Speaker 5: a month now, which is, you know, not the longest
• 10:38
Speaker 5: resident we have, but still that is far too long
• 10:40
Speaker 5: for any pet going through something traumatic like that to
• 10:44
Speaker 5: to be sitting in a shelter environment.
• 10:46
Speaker 2: And how old is Freddy?
• 10:48
Speaker 5: Freddy is close to the ten year old mark. However, well,
• 10:52
Speaker 5: we're guessing at least, but when you see him, he
• 10:55
Speaker 5: kind of moves like an old man. Say you could
• 10:57
Speaker 5: pick him out of our playgroup crowd for.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: Sure, Well he could pick me out of there, right
• 11:00
Speaker 2: because so Tony and I also moved that way. All right,
• 11:03
Speaker 2: how's the cat situation?
• 11:06
Speaker 5: The I'm sorry, what was that?
• 11:07
Speaker 2: The cat situation? The number of cats.
• 11:10
Speaker 5: It is, it's getting more manageable. However, there are still
• 11:13
Speaker 5: far too many cats that are needing to come into
• 11:16
Speaker 5: our building. So please, if you are more of a
• 11:19
Speaker 5: cat person, think of us when you're adopting again. There's
• 11:23
Speaker 5: a line out the door that is waiting to come in,
• 11:25
Speaker 5: and we have to make space for them first.
• 11:27
Speaker 2: All right, you guys out and about anywhere this weekend.
• 11:30
Speaker 5: We are not this weekend, but we will be at
• 11:33
Speaker 5: the Penttry Union next weekend.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: Okay, well remind folks about that next week and you
• 11:37
Speaker 2: give them water. I appreciate you being here, Thanks a lot.
• 11:40
Speaker 5: Yeah, no problem. Everyone have a good weekend, all right.
• 11:43
Speaker 2: Violet is our adopt me Please put of the week.
• 11:45
Speaker 2: And again she is deaf. I love how Angie Tony
• 11:49
Speaker 2: Angie says, fun fact she's deaf. But I did not
• 11:52
Speaker 2: know that about the sign language that that's amazing. They
• 11:54
Speaker 2: can be taught sign language. So she is deaf, she's
• 11:58
Speaker 2: five years old, she's spade, she's free. I forget to
• 12:01
Speaker 2: throw that in there. She's absolutely free of charge. And
• 12:03
Speaker 2: she's great with kids and other dogs and beautiful dog.
• 12:05
Speaker 2: I hadn't really thought about the target dog, but yeah
• 12:07
Speaker 2: that does. Yeah, so beautiful dog got picture posted Dave
• 12:11
Speaker 2: Allen Radio on Facebook the WCCHS Network Facebook page and
• 12:14
Speaker 2: Aunt Dave A seventy on X. So that is our
• 12:16
Speaker 2: adopt me Please pet of the week. Violets go get

• 15:17
Speaker 2: Happy, I guess I should say happy new school year.
• 15:20
Speaker 2: School starts for students next Wednesday. Everybody excited about it.
• 15:24
Speaker 6: Everyone super excited. We've had a great week of professional
• 15:28
Speaker 6: development for our teachers and our administrators, bus drivers, cooks,
• 15:33
Speaker 6: everybody from all facets of the school system have been
• 15:37
Speaker 6: preparing all week. They'll continue Monday and Tuesday, and we'll
• 15:40
Speaker 6: be ready to hit the road running on Wednesday.
• 15:43
Speaker 2: Now, when you talk about these developments, these professional developments programs,
• 15:48
Speaker 2: what exactly goes into those What are the administrators and
• 15:51
Speaker 2: the staff what do they learn?
• 15:53
Speaker 6: Well, hopefully every year we learn at least of new
• 15:57
Speaker 6: strategies to help improve student academic performs. This year we
• 16:01
Speaker 6: had a number of our own employees apply to be
• 16:06
Speaker 6: presenters who offered you know, new content standard teaching for
• 16:12
Speaker 6: all of all of the teachers in their grade levels,
• 16:14
Speaker 6: sort of like a national conference fille if you if
• 16:17
Speaker 6: you will. Our elementary teachers and administrators all reported to
• 16:21
Speaker 6: Capitol High School and our secondary teachers all went to
• 16:26
Speaker 6: Riverside High School. And we also had a speaker that
• 16:30
Speaker 6: focused on literacy and as we continue to improve the
• 16:34
Speaker 6: literacy skills K twelve and Kennall County Schools will can
• 16:38
Speaker 6: continue to be a focus this school year.
• 16:40
Speaker 2: We're talking with doctor Paul Potter against Superintendent of Knaw
• 16:43
Speaker 2: County Schools, Dave Allen Show on five Adieline brownt You
• 16:46
Speaker 2: part by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury and law firm,
• 16:49
Speaker 2: Doctor part of There are several counties around the state,
• 16:51
Speaker 2: including Kanawa, who are taking a second or third look
• 16:55
Speaker 2: at the amount of technology that's used by students and teachers.
• 16:58
Speaker 2: And some have said and It's not exclusive to Canall County.
• 17:02
Speaker 2: This is nationwide that perhaps maybe, especially after COVID, that
• 17:05
Speaker 2: there was too much, too much screen time and not
• 17:08
Speaker 2: enough actual teacher to student class teaching.
• 17:13
Speaker 6: Talk about that well, first of all, I think that,
• 17:16
Speaker 6: you know, we have to recognize how much all of
• 17:19
Speaker 6: the school systems in West Virginia and across the nation
• 17:22
Speaker 6: really overnight we're expected to shift how they've taught for
• 17:27
Speaker 6: many years to applying everything to just technology. You know,
• 17:32
Speaker 6: everything was delivered through technology, and our teachers adapted provided
• 17:38
Speaker 6: you know, pretty good learning experiences for students. I think
• 17:40
Speaker 6: we all learned very quickly that the best learning experience
• 17:43
Speaker 6: has happened in a classroom with a live teacher. However,
• 17:48
Speaker 6: you know, when you switch all of your teaching strategies
• 17:50
Speaker 6: to technology, I think it's been a little flow coming
• 17:54
Speaker 6: away from it. Even in our workforce, we have people
• 17:58
Speaker 6: who now work from home instead of working in brick
• 18:00
Speaker 6: and mortar building after COVID, so we felt that it
• 18:06
Speaker 6: was a good time for us to examine our face
• 18:11
Speaker 6: to face expectations of teaching and learning in a classroom.
• 18:16
Speaker 6: I've had some students talk to me about, you know,
• 18:19
Speaker 6: we have a learning management system that's called that's called schoology,
• 18:22
Speaker 6: where you can post lessons and turn in your assignments
• 18:25
Speaker 6: and it's it really works good in theory. If a
• 18:29
Speaker 6: student is absent, it's a great place to go get
• 18:32
Speaker 6: makeup work. But I think some students became more reliant
• 18:36
Speaker 6: on just trying to do makeup work and not come
• 18:38
Speaker 6: to school. And so we recognize how important face to
• 18:44
Speaker 6: face interaction with students are so that we can set
• 18:48
Speaker 6: expectations and really to determine the learning. So we don't
• 18:52
Speaker 6: think technology is bad. We're certainly not taking technology out
• 18:55
Speaker 6: of the classroom, especially at the secondary level, because students
• 18:59
Speaker 6: have to have technology skills to be able to work
• 19:04
Speaker 6: in their next steps in life. But we are asking
• 19:07
Speaker 6: our teachers and just today i'm with teacher leaders in
• 19:10
Speaker 6: professional development increasing our engagement strategies so that students do
• 19:16
Speaker 6: need to be in the classroom. But it's important that
• 19:19
Speaker 6: parents and teachers and students all recognize that attendance is important,
• 19:24
Speaker 6: just like it is if you go to work, and
• 19:26
Speaker 6: students will be expected to be in class to do
• 19:29
Speaker 6: work in class versus just doing things online.
• 19:32
Speaker 2: And that kind of leads me to my next points again,
• 19:34
Speaker 2: we're talking with doctor Paula Potter, Superintendent of Canagh County Schools.
• 19:38
Speaker 2: The issue with attendance, and this is something that has
• 19:41
Speaker 2: been a problem in schools, you know, for a long time.
• 19:45
Speaker 2: You know, again not Knaw County necessarily. I mean the
• 19:48
Speaker 2: teachers nationwide will tell you that getting kids actually in
• 19:52
Speaker 2: the classroom talk about the importance of that.
• 19:56
Speaker 6: Well, if students aren't in the classroom, they're not engaged
• 20:01
Speaker 6: in the lesson, and so you can do a makeup assignment,
• 20:04
Speaker 6: you know, via technology so to speak, but the rich
• 20:09
Speaker 6: engagement of collaboration, problem solving working through the assignment in
• 20:16
Speaker 6: a classroom is all missed if you're doing it at home.
• 20:20
Speaker 5: And you know, we.
• 20:21
Speaker 6: Struggle a little bit because elementary students, you know, they
• 20:24
Speaker 6: rely on an adult to get them to school, and
• 20:27
Speaker 6: so if they're absident, it really isn't the students' fault
• 20:31
Speaker 6: because the parents aren't getting them to school. And then
• 20:33
Speaker 6: secondary we have some students that then begin to develop
• 20:37
Speaker 6: some bad habits about attendance. And I think over the
• 20:41
Speaker 6: years we've tried to do everything possible to help students graduate,
• 20:45
Speaker 6: and one of those things is just provide them as
• 20:47
Speaker 6: much work as we can to allow them to earn
• 20:50
Speaker 6: a credit to move on, and we just don't feel
• 20:53
Speaker 6: like that's the best message forward. As an adult after
• 20:57
Speaker 6: you graduate, you do have to go to work and
• 21:00
Speaker 6: you have to be there on time. You know, there
• 21:03
Speaker 6: are those minimum expectations of attendance and being present, and
• 21:07
Speaker 6: that's just another lifelong skill that we're going to continue
• 21:10
Speaker 6: to try to build with our families.
• 21:13
  Speaker 5: We have great.
• 21:14
Speaker 6: Social workers, principals, teachers, everyone who reaches out to families.
• 21:19
Speaker 6: We want families to know if there's some type of
• 21:21
Speaker 6: obstacle that's keeping their childs from get them getting them
• 21:24
Speaker 6: to school, please call They can email me or call
• 21:28
Speaker 6: me if they are not sure who to contact, and
• 21:30
Speaker 6: we will do whatever we can to help families remove
• 21:33
Speaker 6: any obstacles from preventing their child to come to school.
• 21:37
Speaker 2: We want to talk about personnel for a moment. How
• 21:39
Speaker 2: as we head into the twenty six twenty twenty seven
• 21:41
Speaker 2: school year, how you looking as far as personnel goes
• 21:44
Speaker 2: as bus drivers and other folks in the education system.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: I mean, I know that there's always a need for people.
• 21:51
  Speaker 2: How's that looking.
• 21:52
Speaker 6: Yes, we do have a need for some bus drivers
• 21:55
Speaker 6: right now. We just had a few leaves just last
• 21:58
Speaker 6: week for other employment opportunities when we do have some vacancies, aids,
• 22:06
Speaker 6: bus drivers, cooks. Right now, anybody who's interested in working,
• 22:10
Speaker 6: if they go to our Kenwall County School web page,
• 22:13
Speaker 6: all the jobs are listed, they can apply right there.
• 22:16
Speaker 6: We would love to get them, you know, signed and ready.
• 22:20
Speaker 6: It does take some time. If they want to be
• 22:21
Speaker 6: a bus driver, they do have to pass the classes,
• 22:24
Speaker 6: but there's some incentives involved with that. We do have
• 22:27
Speaker 6: some opportunity. I know there's people that you know are
• 22:30
Speaker 6: always looking for work and we'd love to have them
• 22:32
Speaker 6: a part of our Kennall County School team.
• 22:34

• 23:05
Speaker 2: Sell it to me as these are the great I
• 23:07
Speaker 2: know you've got great things going on. Tell the listeners
• 23:09
Speaker 2: some of the great things that have you excited about
• 23:12
Speaker 2: public school in Canaw County.
• 23:14
Speaker 6: The great things that we have going on is we
• 23:16
Speaker 6: have certified teachers that have gone to college. They're experts
• 23:20
Speaker 6: in their field. They're experts in the classroom. They're experts
• 23:24
Speaker 6: at forming relationships with students in and outside of the classroom.
• 23:29
Speaker 6: We have multiple opportunities for academic advancement K twelve. We
• 23:34
Speaker 6: have many extracurricular activities from elementary school all the way
• 23:38
Speaker 6: through high school, such as robotics, our music programs, our
• 23:42
Speaker 6: art programs, our sporting programs. There is nothing in my
• 23:48
Speaker 6: mind that can replace the educational experience in a public
• 23:53
Speaker 6: school setting. You have the opportunity to be around people
• 23:56
Speaker 6: with multitudes of differences, multitudes of person multitudes of socioeconomic
• 24:02
Speaker 6: economic background, which is all a reflection of our society.
• 24:07
Speaker 6: And students begin at a very young age to learn
• 24:11
Speaker 6: how to work together solve problems if they have them,
• 24:16
Speaker 6: or if they need a trusted adult to talk to
• 24:19
Speaker 6: We have all of those people in our public school system.
• 24:22
Speaker 6: So if you haven't been in our schools in a
• 24:24
Speaker 6: long time, I would encourage you to come and see
• 24:26
Speaker 6: Come and walk our halls of your area attendance area schools,
• 24:31
Speaker 6: and I think anybody who would like to see it
• 24:35
Speaker 6: in action would be pleasantly surprised.
• 24:38
Speaker 2: If you could give forward. This will be the final question.
• 24:40
Speaker 2: If you could give one piece of advice to parents, grandparents,
• 24:44
Speaker 2: guardians getting ready for the new school year. Now this
• 24:47
Speaker 2: is for the adults. What would that piece of advice be?
• 24:51
Speaker 6: Be involved, be present? And when I say involved, I
• 24:54
Speaker 6: don't mean that you have to be the president of
• 24:56
Speaker 6: the PTA. But know what your child's doing, what the
• 25:00
Speaker 6: doing at school, and if there is something that you
• 25:02
Speaker 6: have a suggestion, or if you even just want to
• 25:05
Speaker 6: say something that's going well, reach out to your school,
• 25:08
Speaker 6: reach out to your school community. Let us know how
• 25:11
Speaker 6: we can help you or how you can help us.
• 25:14
Speaker 6: You know, I think we all overuse that cliche as
• 25:17
Speaker 6: it takes a village to raise the child, but it
• 25:19
Speaker 6: really does. And the more involvement we have from grandparents, parents,
• 25:24
Speaker 6: aunts and uncles than the parent and the student see
• 25:27
Speaker 6: their connection with the school. It's a win win for everybody.
• 25:31
Speaker 2: Doutor Paula Potter, Superintendent of Kenan County Schools, appreciate you
• 25:34
Speaker 2: taking time on our schedule. Have a great school year
• 25:36
Speaker 2: and we'll talk soon.

• 26:04
Speaker 2: All right, I think I already know the quest answer
• 26:05
Speaker 2: to this question. But were you somebody that liked school?
• 26:08
  Speaker 3: I loved school?
• 26:09
Speaker 2: See, I did too.
• 26:10
Speaker 3: We had fun as always a party with the Charleston
• 26:12
Speaker 3: High School and Rose was we couldn't wait to go
• 26:15
  Speaker 3: to school, I.
• 26:15
  Speaker 2: See, And that's that's where I was. And a lot
• 26:18
Speaker 2: of people you know, they see what an idiot I am. Now,
• 26:21
  Speaker 2: They're like, I can't believe that you love. I absolutely
• 26:24
  Speaker 2: loved school. I hated summer. Well, I didn't say I
• 26:27
Speaker 2: hated I look forward to school starting. And it had
• 26:29
Speaker 2: nothing to do with academic, sorry, doctor Potter.
• 26:31
Speaker 3: And I don't know anybody who I grew up with
• 26:32
Speaker 3: who didn't like school. I mean we had fun, very
• 26:35
Speaker 3: very social. Our schools are very social. Of course, this
• 26:37
Speaker 3: was the seventies and eighties when school was fun. We
• 26:40
Speaker 3: actually learned things. Everybody knew how to read. It was fantastic,
• 26:45
Speaker 3: and we had a great opportunities and everything.
• 26:47
Speaker 2: And that I loved it, I mean to me, probably
• 26:51
Speaker 2: not for the right reasons.
• 26:52
Speaker 3: Had great teachers. We had great principles and king and
• 26:54
Speaker 3: of course, you know a student principes you would be
• 26:57
Speaker 3: in trouble. However, you still respected them M and h.
• 27:01
Speaker 3: And as you got older you realized, uh, I mean,
• 27:04
Speaker 3: they prepared you for life.
• 27:05
Speaker 2: I had a teacher, God rest his soul. He passed
• 27:07
Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. His name was mister Washington,
• 27:10
Speaker 2: and he taught at Logan Junior High which is no
• 27:12
Speaker 2: longer in existence, and he taught general business the class
• 27:16
Speaker 2: itself was good. It was interesting. He wasn't the hardest
• 27:19
Speaker 2: teacher in the world. But he had all of these rules,
• 27:22
Speaker 2: like you know, you you had to your paper, had
• 27:25
Speaker 2: to be spaced a certain way. Everything. This was before compute.
• 27:27
Speaker 2: Well there were computers, but not like we know him now,
• 27:30
Speaker 2: and everything like you had to double space. It had
• 27:32
Speaker 2: to be a certain kind of paper. You didn't use
• 27:35
Speaker 2: composition books. It was actual loose leaf paper. You had
• 27:38
Speaker 2: to write in blue ink only you had to had
• 27:40
Speaker 2: your paper a certain way. Last name see if I
• 27:43
Speaker 2: can remember last name Comma, first name uh, the grade
• 27:46
Speaker 2: you were in, dash in your homeroom number and the
• 27:50
Speaker 2: date uh. And in his room, which was was like
• 27:54
Speaker 2: a It was a building, like a modular building. There
• 27:57
Speaker 2: was carpet on the floor. The desks had to be
• 28:00
Speaker 2: lined up perfectly on those dots on the floor, and
• 28:04
Speaker 2: you could not when the bell ring, You could not
• 28:06
Speaker 2: cut between the desk. You had a certain order. And
• 28:08
Speaker 2: I remember, as the seventh grader thinking, this is the
• 28:10
Speaker 2: dumbest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. All
• 28:13
Speaker 2: he was doing was teaching you about detail detail, That's
• 28:17
Speaker 2: all it was, and how to follow the rules that's
• 28:20
Speaker 2: all it was, Tony. It was It wasn't about that stuff.
• 28:24
Speaker 2: It was just that in life there are things that
• 28:27
Speaker 2: you are going to have to do a certain way
• 28:29
Speaker 2: and not get it wrong.
• 28:30
Speaker 3: And how about this, You had business in seventh grade.
• 28:35
Speaker 3: They're been teaching you about business in seventh grade and
• 28:37
Speaker 3: general rid of it, and they are rid of shop
• 28:39
Speaker 3: and mechanical drawing, and all of a sudden junior high.
• 28:41
Speaker 3: Oh mack, and they wonder what happened. What of these
• 28:44
Speaker 3: kids don't own anything? Well because you quit teaching them.
• 28:46
Speaker 2: Well, but a lot of that is coming back.
• 28:48
Speaker 3: I mean yeah, because we realized.
• 28:49
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 28:50
Speaker 2: And they also told my we're not that much different
• 28:53
Speaker 2: in age. They also told our generation everybody has to
• 28:56
Speaker 2: go to college, and that's crap. Not everybody needs to
• 29:00
Speaker 2: go to college now. They need to have some sort
• 29:01
Speaker 2: of higher education, in my opinion, whether it's learning to
• 29:05
Speaker 2: be a mechanic, learning to be a chef, learning to
• 29:07
Speaker 2: be whatever. But not everybody needs I mean, I'm wearing
• 29:10
Speaker 2: my Marshall green today, but not everybody needs to go
• 29:12
  Speaker 2: to Marshall.
• 29:13
Speaker 3: Many of my people I went to school with in
• 29:16
Speaker 3: shop class and then they would they would go to Carver.
• 29:19
Speaker 3: They all own car repair shops, they own HVAC companies,
• 29:24
Speaker 3: and all of them have done very well. I mean
• 29:26
Speaker 3: getting a retiring ag you sold or kids moved on
• 29:30
Speaker 3: or whatever. But they had great lives that made great incomes,
• 29:32
Speaker 3: and they were smart. They go to college and be smart.
• 29:35
Speaker 3: I know a lot of people have college degrees. They
• 29:37
Speaker 3: are really not that smart. It's a lot.
• 29:40
Speaker 2: Text Good Morning Day, Sunday, August sixteens with Mark. Forty

• 33:47
Speaker 15: months old and we've been rolling together since this, me
• 33:53
Speaker 15: and him. He was diagnosed with autism at the age
• 33:58
Speaker 15: of first he started it out with a seizure disorder
• 34:02
Speaker 15: and that then it turned into autism. And that was
• 34:06
Speaker 15: like when he was two years old.
• 34:09
Speaker 2: And again, we're not gonna getting all the details about
• 34:11
Speaker 2: everything that happened. We've all seen it. It's it's gone nationwide.
• 34:16
Speaker 2: We'll let all authorities and other people handle handle that.
• 34:18
Speaker 2: But I want to talk about the community response. Kim
• 34:21
Speaker 2: once that once the video went viral.
• 34:24
Speaker 15: Well, my intentions was to put the video out to
• 34:27
Speaker 15: find out who the kids parents was. And once I
• 34:31
Speaker 15: posted the video, it just blew up. I mean thousands
• 34:37
Speaker 15: of people. I'm still getting phone calls and emails and Texas.
• 34:42
Speaker 2: And when did this happen.
• 34:45
Speaker 15: This happened on the twenty eighth of July. Okay, he
• 34:48
Speaker 15: go to North Charleston almost every day because he liked
• 34:51
Speaker 15: playing basketball. He plays on the Conac County special Olympics
• 34:56

• 35:00
Speaker 15: uh what is three pointners? Yeah, and he loved going there.
• 35:05
Speaker 15: So when my neph I take my nephews the football practice,
• 35:10
Speaker 15: he goes in the gym. So I was at the
• 35:13
Speaker 15: football field, he was at the gym. And I don't
• 35:17
Speaker 15: know how this happened without me seeing it because it
• 35:20
  Speaker 15: was right there.
• 35:22
Speaker 2: Well, like I said, it's it's I first saw the video.
• 35:26
Speaker 2: I don't know how I can know somebody shared it,
• 35:28
Speaker 2: but the community response has just been off the charts
• 35:32
Speaker 2: from people that I mean, like you said, you're getting
• 35:34
Speaker 2: messages right now for people that you didn't even even know.
• 35:37
Speaker 15: So many people, I mean just every I ain't know
• 35:41

• 35:44
Speaker 2: a certain extent. Like I said, this thing is going
• 35:46
Speaker 2: as going nationwide now. And again I'm not going to
• 35:50
Speaker 2: go into what everything happened, but it was it was
• 35:52
Speaker 2: a very bad situation. There was some definitely some bully
• 35:55
Speaker 2: and some headphones were broken and things of that nature,
• 35:59
Speaker 2: and some fid We'll let all the all the other
• 36:01
Speaker 2: people handle that, but to talk about some of the
• 36:03
Speaker 2: things people have done and coming forward.
• 36:04

• 38:17
Speaker 3: a different way because I have familiar with that on
• 38:22
Speaker 3: a personal level. But what I would like to do is,

• 45:31
Speaker 2: I don't have to do anything because you're Tony the Taylor.
• 45:34
Speaker 3: But but you didn't.
• 45:35
Speaker 2: I mean when I when I reached out to you, actually,
• 45:38
Speaker 2: I think you. I think the first time I actually
• 45:41
Speaker 2: saw the video, I think you shared it. And then
• 45:44
Speaker 2: you and I talk, you know, several times a day,
• 45:46
Speaker 2: and and you said, I want to do something, and.
• 45:49
Speaker 3: It touches me. Autism is new to me, and I
• 45:55
Speaker 3: deal with it all the time and been immersing myself
• 45:58
Speaker 3: in education of it, and so it's fascinating the whole thing.
• 46:03
Speaker 3: But seeing that video, really, I don't know. I would
• 46:07
Speaker 3: have handled it way different.
• 46:08
Speaker 2: Yeah, I have no doubt. And that's why I said, look,
• 46:12
Speaker 2: we're you know, when I when I talked to Kim
• 46:14
Speaker 2: about coming in, I said, look, I'm not interested in
• 46:16
Speaker 2: getting into all the details. It's out there. You can
• 46:19
Speaker 2: find it, you know. But but her son was attacked
• 46:25
Speaker 2: by a group of teenagers and he is a grown man.
• 46:28
Speaker 2: I mean, he's a grown man, and who knows what
• 46:31
Speaker 2: goes through people's heads. It's not my place all that
• 46:33
Speaker 2: courts and everybody else handle all that stuff. But we
• 46:36
Speaker 2: just wanted to do something nice for her and to
• 46:38
Speaker 2: let her tell her story and give her a chance
• 46:39
Speaker 2: to say thanks. And you know, she broke down there
• 46:42
Speaker 2: when she started, and it continued during the break about
• 46:45
Speaker 2: all of the the outpouring of support. And that's basically
• 46:49
Speaker 2: what I wanted to do with the interview. I was
• 46:51
Speaker 2: and I told her when I reach she didn't know
• 46:52
Speaker 2: me from Adam, and I just reached out to her.
• 46:55
Speaker 2: Uh apparently I'm not as big a radio star as
• 46:57
Speaker 2: I thought I was. But I just reached out to Look,
• 47:00
  Speaker 2: you don't know me, but here's who I am. I
• 47:03
Speaker 2: want to give you an opportunity to thank people. And
• 47:05
Speaker 2: that's it. I'm not going to get into the tabloid style,
• 47:07
Speaker 2: you know whatever. Just and that's what she did. And
• 47:10
Speaker 2: she issues generally touched. And he's going to get some
• 47:15
Speaker 2: Tony the Taylor gi Yeah.
• 47:17
  Speaker 3: Baltimore Ravens.
• 47:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, big Ravens fans, Big Ravens fans, Michigan and Michigan

Speaker 2: what you don't know can hurt. A couple of texts
• 47:46
Speaker 2: here we were talking about schooling and education earlier Texas.
• 47:50
Speaker 2: My teachers were like yours back then in regards to
• 47:53
Speaker 2: actually having standards. God forbid, schools and classes actually have
• 47:56
Speaker 2: expectations a little harsh. Think it's a little hard.
• 48:00
Speaker 3: Okay, No, we just saw where cop Michigan speaking of
• 48:03
Speaker 3: Michigan or not giving freshmen grades because they might get
• 48:06
Speaker 3: their feelings hurt and be depressed about it. I saw
• 48:09
Speaker 3: that that's just insanity to me and whatever having to grade.
• 48:12
Speaker 3: When I was an A, he had to have ninety
• 48:14
Speaker 3: six percent to get an A. Now it's like, we'll
• 48:17
Speaker 3: see where you know, let' just do it by feel.
• 48:20
Speaker 2: Well, And I think that what happens is is I
• 48:22
Speaker 2: think we we we we sit. In many cases, we
• 48:25
Speaker 2: set students, whether they're public school, high school, or college,
• 48:30
Speaker 2: we set them up for a false world by by
• 48:32
Speaker 2: coddling them. And I don't have granded. Somebody will point
• 48:35
Speaker 2: out to me and say, you don't have kids. You
• 48:36
Speaker 2: shouldn't talk about it. Probably so you have.
• 48:39
Speaker 3: To deal with them. But it's the product.
• 48:40
Speaker 2: But I did an idea deal with us.
• 48:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's terrible. I mean, look, let's be frank here.
• 48:48
Speaker 3: Only thirty percent can read and they're graduating. How does
• 48:51
Speaker 3: that happen? How does that happen. How does colleges have
• 48:55
Speaker 3: to have remedial English before they can even get But
• 48:59
Speaker 3: they graduated from a school. That's the problem. Keep pushing
• 49:04
Speaker 3: them ahead, pushing them ahead, that's the problem. There's and
• 49:07
  Speaker 3: there's no consequences.
• 49:08
Speaker 2: Well, and I do want to say, we do have
• 49:09
Speaker 2: some wonderful educators in great educators, but a lot of
• 49:13
Speaker 2: them aren't allowed to educate.
• 49:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, they're not allowed to educate.
• 49:16
Speaker 2: I've heard more than one teacher that have told me
• 49:19
Speaker 2: that that said that exact same thing.
• 49:20
Speaker 3: The teachers teach like counselor's counsel.
• 49:23
Speaker 2: And some of the things like I said, I've alluded
• 49:24
Speaker 2: to mister Washington, my general business teacher. I learned more
• 49:28
Speaker 2: from him and it wasn't even so much about the class.
• 49:31
Speaker 2: The class itself was simple. I mean, we learned how
• 49:33
Speaker 2: to type on on on keyboards on manual.
• 49:39
Speaker 3: You know, life comes at you hard and it's none forgiving.
• 49:42
Speaker 3: And they're not teaching again, no consequences, and then when
• 49:45
Speaker 3: consequences happen, they don't know how to handle it.
• 49:48
Speaker 2: A text said I had a teacher similar to yours
• 49:50
Speaker 2: day and what I learned from that the rules do
• 49:53
Speaker 2: not have to make sense, but they have to be followed.
• 49:55
Speaker 2: I mean, and how many of us in everyday life, Tony,
• 49:58
Speaker 2: have gone through when you why in the heck am
• 50:01
Speaker 2: I doing this well? Because someone above you told you to,
• 50:05
Speaker 2: and because it has to be done. Nobody likes to
• 50:06
Speaker 2: pay taxes, Nobody likes to adhere to the speed limit
• 50:10
Speaker 2: either they don't have to.
• 50:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's I don't know it is, but life hits
• 50:14
Speaker 3: you hard and then they don't. I mean, they're saying
• 50:16
Speaker 3: ten percent, at least ten percent of job interviews, the
• 50:19
Speaker 3: parent comes, what's going on?
• 50:21
Speaker 2: What happened to me?
• 50:22
Speaker 3: It would be immediately you're not even considered.
• 50:25
Speaker 2: I was in a position at another radio station to
• 50:28
Speaker 2: interview a part time employee, and this was years ago.
• 50:33
Speaker 2: The young man and his mother came to the studio.
• 50:38
Speaker 2: There were setting. This wasn't this company, it's a different company.
• 50:40
Speaker 2: Receptionist buzzed me and said, hey, you're ten o'clock interviews here.
• 50:43
Speaker 2: I went out there and she introduced herself to me,
• 50:45
Speaker 2: and this is my son. Okay, that's that's mistake number one.
• 50:48
Speaker 2: And I said we'll come on back in my office.
• 50:50
Speaker 2: And the mom starts walking back and I said, excuse me,
• 50:53
Speaker 2: and she said, well, he's a little nervous. He's never
• 50:55
Speaker 2: been on an interview before. I said, he's eighteen years old, right,
• 50:59
Speaker 2: And I said, well, I'm not hiring you for the job.
• 51:02
Speaker 2: I'm hiring him. And she insisted on in case she's well,
• 51:05
Speaker 2: i'd really like to be and asked, do you know what?
• 51:07
Speaker 2: Thank you for your tom and that shortest interview ever.
• 51:10
  Speaker 2: I'm done.
• 51:10
  Speaker 3: It's ridiculous. I mean it's ridiculous.
• 51:13
Speaker 2: Text college kids can't read. Blame no child left behind
• 51:15
  Speaker 2: in George Bush.
• 51:18
  Speaker 3: Maybe that's what started. I don't know. I would blame
• 51:20
Speaker 3: when the Feds took over education because remember when we
• 51:24
Speaker 3: were kids, the federal government wasn't involved in education. As
• 51:27
Speaker 3: you're just sit the standard the kids what it would be.
• 51:30
Speaker 3: You have to read on a proficient level and understand
• 51:32
Speaker 3: the basic math. But that's all should do. They shouldn't
• 51:35
Speaker 3: even be involved anyway. Push all of that money back
• 51:37
Speaker 3: to the state, to the states, and with them.
• 51:40
Speaker 2: Distributed, you know you're gonna be okay when you learn
