Latest / Millennial Mustard Seed / S6 224. God Builds in the Ruins
Transcript
- 0:28God builds in ruins. There's a kind of betrayal so
- 0:34subtle it looks like love. But it is not love.
- 0:39It's stepping into the place of Christ, making myself the
- 0:43sacrifice so someone else wouldn't have to break.
- 0:48I thought if I absorbed the blows, softened the weapons,
- 0:52swallowed the shrapnel, maybe then I would be safe.
- 0:57Maybe then I would be loved if I didn't realize the breaking was
- 1:01never mine to prevent. It was theirs.
- 1:05And sometimes breaking is it's mercy.
- 1:11I stood there bleeding and I called it loyalty.
- 1:14I cut pieces off myself to keep the peace.
- 1:19I called it faith, but it was just self betrayal.
- 1:25It is the slow erasure of voice, of hope, of need in the name of
- 1:32survival. And what kind of relationship
- 1:35demands that? Only one already haunted by the
- 1:40ghosts of ungrieved sorrow, the poltergeists of war, the Spooks
- 1:46of silent rooms and shattered trust, it whispers.
- 1:51Maybe if I'm small enough, soft enough, silent enough, I will be
- 1:57loved enough to stay alive. But safety isn't silent.
- 2:02Safety is the kind of love that leaves room to speak, even when
- 2:08I'm wrong. Even when I'm messy, even when
- 2:11my words come out cracked and bleeding.
- 2:14Safety is mercy, not fear. There's another kind of
- 2:18betrayal, too. It looks like power.
- 2:21It roars like strength, and it's just the erasure of someone
- 2:25else, the refusal to hear, the refusal to bend, the refusal to
- 2:32carry any weight but your own. It thunders.
- 2:41I must demand enough, control enough, and crush enough.
- 2:45Then I will be strong enough to stay safe.
- 2:50But that's not power, not the kind Christ showed.
- 2:55Real power walks on water and rescues the drowning.
- 2:58Real power raises the dead. Real power lays itself down and
- 3:05picks up life again. Both betrayals are rooted in
- 3:10fear. Both are hollow.
- 3:13Both leave a void where love, just it, can't live.
- 3:18And I see it now how often I traded pieces of myself to keep
- 3:23the fragile, the fragile peace. How often I called it loyalty
- 3:30when it was really loss. How often I gaslit myself into
- 3:34believing that all suffering was holy, even when it just, it just
- 3:40wasn't. I spent years trying to hold the
- 3:45ruins together, cutting myself open to patch the cracks.
- 3:50When blood wasn't enough, I used tears, and when tears weren't
- 3:54enough, I used skin. And when skin wasn't enough to
- 3:58hold it together, I offered up my bones.
- 4:00And that was that was where I broke.
- 4:04And for what? A house built on grief.
- 4:07A temple for ghosts. But even as everything
- 4:12collapses, God builds. Not after the wreckage.
- 4:19In the wreckage he builds with hands I can't even see.
- 4:23I feel it. He builds on ground I forgot
- 4:27even existed, hope blooming through frozen earth, a future
- 4:34breathing in the ashes of a past I tried so hard to keep from
- 4:39burning. Maybe it's only when we break,
- 4:43like really break, that we're finally porous enough to let him
- 4:48build without getting in his way.
- 4:56I think about how easy it is to see the boundaries of my body,
- 4:59like your arm is not my arm and my skin is not your skin, but
- 5:04somehow in the unseen places, the heart, the soul, the ties we
- 5:09call love, the lines, they just blur.
- 5:15Where do I end and you begin? When love becomes a trauma bond,
- 5:19we lose the ability to even tell.
- 5:22And so I'm learning. Like the slow crack of ice in
- 5:26winter, like the stubborn green of early spring.
- 5:32I'm learning to see the signs, the red flags, but also the
- 5:37green shoots, the truth rising in the thaw.
- 5:41I'm learning that ambiguity is not the enemy, it's the soil
- 5:45where discernment grows. And I'm learning that Christ is
- 5:51not a narrow perch beneath my feet.
- 5:54He is a wide and steady pasture, even when I can't see it, even
- 5:59when it feels like I'm balancing on the head of a needle.
- 6:03I don't have to make him bigger. I just have to let him show me
- 6:07the land that was already mine. And I'm learning not to erase
- 6:14myself for someone else's comfort, and not to erase
- 6:17someone else for my survival. I'm learning to abide where he
- 6:23builds, even as the old walls fall, even as the ground shakes,
- 6:30even as the ruins smoke. I'm learning that in the middle
- 6:37of the breaking there is already a new beginning.
- 7:34Yeah.
