- 0:08>> Seth: You walk into a dimly lit tavern,
- 0:10shaking off the night's cold.
- 0:13The soft din of patrons reaches your ear, the
- 0:16conversations of many languages overlapping
- 0:19like birds in a forest.
- 0:22Something draws your attention above all else. It's
- 0:24the guttural laugh of an elderly orc
- 0:28is sitting in a chair by the hearth.
- 0:30As you approach, you notice his once
- 0:33proud green skin has started to turn an
- 0:36ashy gray, his long locks of white hair
- 0:39falling from his topknot like an avalanche. One of
- 0:42his lower tusks is broken, and you
- 0:45could see a myriad of battle scars.
- 0:48He spots you as you approach, sizing you up in an
- 0:50instant.
- 0:52>> Monty: Hello.
- 0:52>> Seth: there, stranger. Don't
- 0:55see many of your kind this far
- 0:57north. What brings you this far
- 1:00from home? You say nothing,
- 1:03but pull the hood of your cloak a little tighter
- 1:06around your head for fear of being noticed by the other
- 1:08patrons. Gruk sees
- 1:11you're on ease and offers you a seat. Have a
- 1:14seat, traveler. Gruk flags down a bar
- 1:17wench and orders you both some mail.
- 1:20After a long moment, she returns with his order and hands you a
- 1:23tankard. You accept, and Gruk takes
- 1:26a long quaff from his own tankard.
- 1:29He considers you for a moment and then sets down his
- 1:32tankard.
- 1:35There's only one reason one of
- 1:38your kind would make such a pilgrimage as this.
- 1:41You're here seeking information about a
- 1:44certain dark elf, aren't you?
- 1:50You glance so nervously at the room,
- 1:52hoping no one overheard Gruk's proclamation,
- 1:55but the rest of the tavern seems preoccupied with their own
- 1:58business. You take a hesitant sip
- 2:01from your tanker. As you do, you make a mental note
- 2:04that Gruk may have to be dealt with at
- 2:07some time. An orc this intuitive could
- 2:10be a problem for you down the road.
- 2:13I suppose it was only a matter of time before
- 2:16someone from down, south came looking
- 2:19for him. He's made quite a name for
- 2:22himself up here. It's my
- 2:24estimation that the heroes of some of these tales have
- 2:27all been real scoundrels at
- 2:30some point or another. But not him.
- 2:33Do you know anything about him other than what you've been
- 2:36told? You shake your head. All
- 2:39of your information about your quarry has been what
- 2:42could only amount to propaganda. But you
- 2:45were given orders by a certain pasha
- 2:47puk, your patron
- 2:50and client. You don't question your
- 2:53orders, you just carry them out.
- 2:56What is your business with him?
- 2:59Actually, it's none of my concern. Either you will find
- 3:01him, or he'll find you.
- 3:04That's just how it works.
- 3:07Gruk leans closer and lowers his voice
- 3:09momentarily. That's just the way this
- 3:12works. I've been alive long enough
- 3:15to know an assassin when I see one.
- 3:19Gruk leans back in his seat and gives you a
- 3:22lopsided grin that only an orc can
- 3:24give. Like I said, your business
- 3:27is none of mine. But maybe I can shed some light on
- 3:30the legend. A hero, some
- 3:33might say a future deity.
- 3:36I mean, that is what he is, isn't he?
- 3:40A drow that defied Lolth left
- 3:43the underdark and has been making a name for himself as a
- 3:46ranger. You know, probably some of the
- 3:48stories, but do you know of his fight with the
- 3:51dragon? Shimmer, gloom.
- 3:58Welcome to faith, fantasy and fairy tales. A
- 4:01conversation between two christian nerds about D
- 4:04and D, Sci-Fi and any other nerdy stuff we can think
- 4:07of. I'm Seth.
- 4:08>> Monty: I'm, Monty.
- 4:10>> Seth: Let's get nerdy together.
- 4:13Story is kind of what this podcast is
- 4:16all about, right? So why is it for
- 4:19us that Halo is so near and dear to our hearts?
- 4:22Well, we're brothers, and growing up,
- 4:25you know, he watched over my shoulder
- 4:27regularly playing video games or we play
- 4:30together. This is actually the first game that we
- 4:33got where we actually were able to sit down
- 4:35together and play through a story
- 4:38together and just use our
- 4:40imaginations. This was our, like,
- 4:42forming, video games. And the story for it
- 4:45is something that I, think a lot
- 4:48of people really could get into. If this wasn't the
- 4:51genre, if the genre wasn't video game,
- 4:54right? Or the media, excuse me. Wasn't video game. If it was
- 4:57a movie, I think a lot more people would be into it.
- 5:00>> Monty: Yeah, definitely.
- 5:01>> Seth: This is a D and D monster. It's so,
- 5:04it's a really cool monster. The first edition
- 5:07appearance of a beholder was as
- 5:10if, Rob Kuntz was like, okay, here's a
- 5:12circle. here's an
- 5:15eye.
- 5:16>> Seth: here's a mouth. that's kind of boring.
- 5:19Okay, here's a bunch more eyes.
- 5:22And that's all you got?
- 5:23>> Monty: Well, what's funny I think too, is it looked like he started to
- 5:26draw like a medusa, and then he, like, he
- 5:29was going to draw like a medusa cyclops, but he sucked at
- 5:32it. Cause the eye
- 5:35stalks are really short.
- 5:36>> Seth: So I would encourage you get onto YouTube or get
- 5:39onto Google or whatever you use, find it. Cause it
- 5:42is pretty hilarious. It's in this
- 5:45giant cavern. And, with that, I'd like to
- 5:48kind of do something a little bit different here.
- 5:51Let's kind of go on an imagination
- 5:54quest here for just a second, just to see, try to
- 5:57get into your mind's eye what
- 5:58menzoberanzon is really like.
- 6:01Okay, imagine being a surface
- 6:04world dweller. You walk around in the forest. Let's say
- 6:07it's nighttime. you get to see the stars,
- 6:10hear birds, hear all the different,
- 6:13flora and fauna of the surface world.
- 6:16Then you start to go into this tunnel,
- 6:19and you go deeper and deeper. It gets blacker
- 6:22and darker the deeper you go.
- 6:24Generally speaking, it's getting warmer, hotter, almost
- 6:27to the point of unbearable heat,
- 6:30but darker to the point where you
- 6:33can't see your hand in front of your face. You light a
- 6:36torch, but the torch only goes so far
- 6:39down the depth of this cavern, down the depth of
- 6:42this cave. it's winding back and forth and
- 6:45back and forth. And as you get down, it
- 6:48breaks out onto a, small, little plateau and
- 6:51overlooking a city of
- 6:53stalactites and stalagmites. Built
- 6:56into these stalactites and
- 6:59stalagmites, you see little. Little flickers
- 7:02of blue and purple and green lights
- 7:05fairy, fire that is essentially
- 7:08lighting this giant cavern. This
- 7:10cavern that you're looking at as you step out onto
- 7:13this plateau is a thousand feet high.
- 7:16Built into the walls,
- 7:19there are what look like
- 7:21castles, but they're hanging from the ceiling or
- 7:24hanging from the walls themselves. You
- 7:27see a, small lake off in the
- 7:30distance. But what is
- 7:33major in your vision as you walk out here is
- 7:35one massive tower right in the
- 7:38middle. And on the top of that tower, you see
- 7:41a giant flame, similar
- 7:44to fairy fire, that lights the
- 7:46entirety of this cavern in kind of
- 7:49an eerie, spooky glow. What
- 7:52you're looking at this tower is
- 7:55the tower. Narvandel,
- 7:58you know, we're not trying to, like, focus in on any one
- 8:01dragon today. Monty, what's your favorite
- 8:04dragon?
- 8:04>> Monty: My favorite?
- 8:06>> Seth: Yeah.
- 8:07>> Monty: overall, yeah. So my favorite dragon.
- 8:10I would say the silver dragons.
- 8:12>> Seth: Silver dragons.
- 8:13>> Monty: I, think that they look really clean as
- 8:16far as, like, the way that they captivate me. And
- 8:19I would also say the silver, dragons,
- 8:22because they have sort of like, an allegiance,
- 8:25usually to a gold dragon. Their motivations are
- 8:28not really their own. They're just sort of acting out of duty.
- 8:31Right.
- 8:31>> Seth: Oh, yeah. There you go. for me, I think I know
- 8:34this is going to be typical of just who I am.
- 8:38I would probably have to go the.
- 8:40>> Monty: Red dragon, favorite maniac over
- 8:43here.
- 8:43>> Seth: Love fire. Yeah, exactly. You know, I'm
- 8:46not, I'm not a huge fan of their personalities.
- 8:48Right. I'm just a huge fan of their
- 8:51design and their breath weapon.
- 8:54>> Monty: Although I'm. I would probably say you
- 8:57tend to have a red dragon personality.
- 9:00Right. If I. If I was to identify you as a
- 9:03type of dragon, it would probably be red dragon. I say that
- 9:06because not necessarily, like, total
- 9:09arrogance, but self confidence. Right. I think that that comes
- 9:12out. I don't want to, like, beat you up or anything,
- 9:15but to a degree, you know, your. Your hoard
- 9:18is. Is built up of, you
- 9:21know, the things that you see, like,
- 9:24that elevate your lifestyle, or
- 9:27status or whatever. I'm not trying to beat you up.
- 9:29>> Seth: Or anything, but I think that.
- 9:32>> Monty: And then, obviously, you're a pyromaniac. You've pretty much
- 9:35always been one. So I think that you.
- 9:37>> Seth: That is 100% the truth. Yeah.
- 9:40>> Monty: You are attuned to the Red Dragon way.
- 9:43>> Seth: Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:43>> Monty: Yeah.
- 9:44>> Seth: Would I say that you're a silver dragon? you know, I would.
- 9:46The one thing that I read on silver dragons is their
- 9:49immense loyalty. M and I would say,
- 9:52yes. That is.
- 9:53>> Monty: You think I'm like a silver dragon? Huh? Huh?
- 9:56>> Seth: I think that your attitude, if we were to ever look
- 9:58at a, person that is loyal, Monty, you
- 10:01definitely have that. I feel like we should do.
- 10:04>> Monty: This, Seth, where we should, like, build out a chart.
- 10:07Right. Of, like, dragon colors. Right?
- 10:10Okay. And have it. It's like a personality
- 10:12test, right? Yeah, we should do that.
- 10:15>> Seth: If you guys want us to do.
- 10:16>> Monty: That, you'll have to let us know.
- 10:17>> Seth: Hey, if you want to do that comment.
- 10:19>> Monty: Yeah.
- 10:20>> Seth: Review rate, subscribe, all of
- 10:22that.
- 10:23>> Monty: Throw in the comments, what you think each
- 10:26dragon is like, and we'll try to meld
- 10:29these together. And not only that types.
- 10:32>> Seth: Yeah. Not just that, but tell us which dragon you
- 10:35identify most with.
- 10:36>> Monty: Yeah.
- 10:36>> Seth: The big thing that I want to see is from some of you guys
- 10:39out there that have been listening. You, know, give us your
- 10:42ideas.
- 10:42>> Monty: What.
- 10:43>> Seth: What would you like for us to cover? We want to know
- 10:46what you want so, that we can touch on that.
- 10:49Remember, obviously, we're talking about
- 10:51specifics, stories in
- 10:53the fantasy or Sci-Fi
- 10:56realms, but we're.
- 10:57>> Monty: Oh, yeah, for sure. And obviously, there's a ton of
- 11:00stories out there that we could touch on. for now, we got some
- 11:03announcements. We got the upcoming deck
- 11:06of many things segments, which will be some episodes where
- 11:09we basically bring together a bunch of
- 11:12smaller topics. let us know what topics you
- 11:15guys would like to hear from or about. But, you
- 11:18know, we're going to touch on sort of the smaller things that don't have as
- 11:20much background and depth to them but combine
- 11:23them into singular episodes that we're calling the deck of many
- 11:26things mini. But I realize
- 11:29that is a tongue twister. If you're trying to say one or the
- 11:32other, then, of course we've got our mail bag of
- 11:35holding, which everybody should have expected.
- 11:39It's sort of the obvious, you know, catch term. But anyway,
- 11:42the mailbag of holding, which will be, when you guys send
- 11:44in your reviews, questions, all that great stuff,
- 11:47or just some comments you want to talk some crap about. Seth, that's
- 11:50great. Please do that. Do extra of that if you
- 11:53can. And also give some praise to our producer
- 11:56and writers, JD and Morgan, because they are. They are great.
- 11:59>> Seth: they are awesome.
- 12:00>> Monty: Remember to give us some reviews. Subscriptions, likes, subscribers.
- 12:03Those are the things that keep us going. And we will see you
- 12:06guys next time. Go slay those dragons,
- 12:08Ram.
