Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends. It is Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Tuesday. It is the 26th of September.
- 0:18And welcome along to another day when you and I get to punctuate
- 0:23our day with God's word as written by Luke in the book of
- 0:28Acts. And today, the entire chapter is
- 0:31dedicated to one part of one story.
- 0:33This is our mate Steven, who has just been dragged in front of
- 0:38the Council, lied about by these witnesses.
- 0:41And now the council is going to quiz him on whether all of this
- 0:44is true, and he will speak incredibly boldly and end up
- 0:49paying the ultimate price for that.
- 0:52But today, as we read this, this is probably not a verbatim word
- 0:56for word what he said. But this is Luke summarizing the
- 1:00beliefs that Stephen would have held true, so that in the
- 1:04retelling of the story, Stephen is given the speech that
- 1:08summarizes everything that is involved in the faith of this
- 1:12growing group of people who are calling themselves Christians.
- 1:16So this is a wonderful synopsis of summary of faith statement
- 1:20that we get to read in front of these very hostile witnesses.
- 1:25So having said all that, join me.
- 1:26Let us read together Acts Chapter 7.
- 1:41Then the high priest asked Steven, are these accusations
- 1:45true? This was Steven's reply.
- 1:49Brothers and fathers, listen to me.
- 1:52Our glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham and Mesopotamia
- 1:57before he settled in Haran. God told him, Leave your native
- 2:01land and your relatives, and come into the land that I will
- 2:04show you. So Abraham left the land of the
- 2:07Chaldeans and lived in Haran until his father died.
- 2:12Then God brought him here to the land where you now live.
- 2:16That God gave him no inheritance here, not even one square foot
- 2:20of land. God did promise, however, that
- 2:23eventually the whole land would belong to Abraham and his
- 2:26descendants, even though he had no children.
- 2:28Yet God also told him that his descendants would live in a
- 2:32foreign land where they would be oppressed as slaves for 400
- 2:36years. But I will punish the nation
- 2:39that enslaves them, God said, and in the end they will come
- 2:44out and worship me here. In this place.
- 2:48God also gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision at that
- 2:51time. So when Abraham became the
- 2:53father of Isaac, he circumcised him on the eighth day.
- 2:58And the practice has continued when Isaac became the father of
- 3:01Jacob and when Jacob became the father of the 12 patriarchs of
- 3:06the Israelite nation. These patriarchs were jealous of
- 3:10their brother Joseph, and they sold him to be a slave in Egypt.
- 3:13That God was with him and rescued him from all his
- 3:17troubles. And God gave him favor before
- 3:20Pharaoh, king of Egypt. God also gave Joseph unusual
- 3:24wisdom, so that Pharaoh appointed him governor over all
- 3:28of Egypt and put him in charge of the palace.
- 3:31But if famine came upon Egypt and Canaan, there was great
- 3:35misery, and our ancestors ran out of food.
- 3:38Jacob heard that there was still grain in Egypt, so we sent his
- 3:41sons, our ancestors, to buy some.
- 3:44The second time they went, Joseph revealed his identity to
- 3:48his brothers, and they were introduced to Pharaoh.
- 3:51Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob and all his relatives to
- 3:55come to Egypt, 75 persons in all.
- 3:59So Jacob went to Egypt. He died there, as did our
- 4:03ancestors. Their bodies were taken to
- 4:06Shekham and buried in the tomb Abraham had bought, for a
- 4:09certain price from Haymore's sons in Shekham.
- 4:14As the time grew near when God would fulfill his promise to
- 4:17Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt increased
- 4:21greatly. But then a new king came to the
- 4:23throne of Egypt, who knew nothing about Joseph.
- 4:26This king exploited our people and oppressed them, forcing
- 4:30parents to abandon their newborn babies so they would die.
- 4:34At that time, Moses was born a beautiful child in God's eyes.
- 4:39His parents cared for him at home for three months.
- 4:42When they had to abandon him, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him
- 4:45and raised him as her own son. Moses was taught all the wisdom
- 4:50of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and
- 4:54action. One day when Moses was 40 years
- 4:57old, he decided to visit his relatives, the people of Israel.
- 5:01He saw an Egyptian mistreating an Israelite, so Moses came to
- 5:05the man's defense and avenged him, killing the Egyptian.
- 5:09Moses assumed his fellow Israelites would realize that
- 5:12God had sent him to rescue them, but they didn't.
- 5:16The next day he visited them again and saw two men of Israel
- 5:20fighting. He tried to be a peacemaker.
- 5:23Men, he said. You are brothers, why are you
- 5:26fighting each other? But the man in the wrong pushed
- 5:29Moses aside. Who made you a ruler and judge
- 5:32over us? He asked.
- 5:34Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian?
- 5:37Yesterday, when Moses heard that, he fled the country and
- 5:42lived as a foreigner in the land of Midian.
- 5:44There his two sons were born. 40 years later, in the desert near
- 5:49Mount Sinai, an Angel appeared to Moses in the flame of a
- 5:53burning Bush. When Moses saw it, he was amazed
- 5:57at the sight, and he went to take a closer look.
- 6:00The voice of the Lord called out to him, I am the God of your
- 6:04ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 6:09Moses shook with terror and did not dare to look.
- 6:13And the Lord said to him, take off your sandals, for you are
- 6:17standing on holy ground. I have certainly seen the
- 6:21oppression of my people in Egypt.
- 6:23I have heard their groans and have come down to rescue them.
- 6:28Now go, for I am sending you back to Egypt.
- 6:32So God sent back the same man his people had previously
- 6:36rejected when they demanded, who made you a ruler and judge over
- 6:40us Through the Angel who appeared to him in the burning
- 6:43Bush. God sent Moses to be their ruler
- 6:46and savior, and by means of many wonders and miraculous signs he
- 6:51led them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and through the
- 6:54wilderness. For 40 years.
- 6:57Moses himself told the people of Israel, God will raise up for
- 7:01you a prophet like me, from among your own people.
- 7:05Moses was with our ancestors the assembly of God's people in the
- 7:09wilderness when the angels spoke to him at Mount Sinai.
- 7:14And there Moses received life giving words to pass on to us.
- 7:18But our ancestors refused to listen to Moses.
- 7:21They rejected him and wanted to return to Egypt.
- 7:25They told Aaron, make us some gods who can lead us, for we
- 7:29don't know what has become of this Moses who brought us out of
- 7:32Egypt. So they made an idol shaped like
- 7:35a calf, and they sacrificed to it and celebrated over this
- 7:39thing they had made. Then God turned away from them
- 7:42and abandoned them to serve the stars of heaven as their gods.
- 7:47In the Book of the Prophets, it is written, Was it to me you
- 7:50were bringing sacrifices and offerings during those 40 years
- 7:54in the wilderness. Israel.
- 7:56No. You carried your Pagan gods, the
- 7:59shrine of Molech, and the star of your God Refan, and the
- 8:04images you made to worship them. So I will send you into exile as
- 8:09far away as Babylon. Our ancestors carried the
- 8:13Tabernacle with them through the wilderness.
- 8:16It was constructed according to the plan God had shown Moses
- 8:20years later, when Joshua led our ancestors in battle against the
- 8:24nations that God drove out of this land, the Tabernacle was
- 8:28taken with them into their new territory, and it stayed there
- 8:32until the time of King David. David found favor with God and
- 8:37asked for the privilege of building a permanent temple for
- 8:40the God of Jacob. But it was Solomon who actually
- 8:44built it. However, the Most High doesn't
- 8:46live in temples made by human hands.
- 8:49As the Prophet says, heaven is my throne and the earth is my
- 8:54footstool. Could you build me a temple as
- 8:57good as that? Ask the Lord, Could you build me
- 9:00such a resting place? Didn't my hands make both heaven
- 9:04and earth You stubborn people? You are heathen at heart and
- 9:09death to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy
- 9:13Spirit? That's what your ancestors did.
- 9:16And so do you. Name one prophet your ancestors
- 9:20didn't persecute. They even killed the ones who
- 9:22predicted the coming of the righteous 1 The Messiah, whom
- 9:26you betrayed and murdered. You deliberately disobeyed God's
- 9:31law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.
- 9:35The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Steven's
- 9:38accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage.
- 9:42But Steven, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into
- 9:47heaven and saw the glory of God. And he saw Jesus standing in the
- 9:53place of honor at God's right hand.
- 9:56And he told them, Look, I see the heavens open, and the Son of
- 10:01man standing in the place of honor at God's right hand.
- 10:06Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting.
- 10:10They rushed at him and dragged him out of the city and began to
- 10:13stone him. His accusers took off their
- 10:16coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.
- 10:20As they stoned him, Stephen prayed.
- 10:23Lord Jesus received my spirit. He fell to his knees shouting,
- 10:29Lord, don't charge them with this sin, and with that he died.
- 10:45Jesus, faith in you is not a new religion.
- 10:49It's not a new deal. It is not something that has
- 10:53sprung up out of nothing. But you are the promise
- 10:57long-awaited of the God of the universe, who in the beginning
- 11:03created everything. You are indeed that one and same
- 11:08God, Jesus. And we just praise you, our
- 11:12triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- 11:18We thank You, Father, for creating the world.
- 11:21We thank You, Jesus, for coming and for saving us.
- 11:24And we thank you, Holy Spirit, for living here in our hearts to
- 11:30be with us every day. God, you are incredible and we
- 11:35love you and we recognize you as sovereign.
- 11:41And it's in your mighty name that we pray.
- 11:44Amen.
