- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into the next round presented by Hard Rock Bet
- 0:02Speaker 1: on Sport and State as we get rolling today.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Brownie, explain to everyone the situation. Maybe it looks a
- 0:08Speaker 2: little different or sounds a little different in places today.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Maybe it doesn't, but a lightning strike or something here
- 0:14Speaker 2: last night.
- 0:15Speaker 1: A power surge, we are told, by young Tyler who
- 0:19Speaker 1: lives closest to the studio than anyone. A power surge
- 0:21Speaker 1: in this part of Birmingham. that has a lot of
- 0:24Speaker 1: things going wrong in this part of Birmingham, not the
- 0:26Speaker 1: least of which is our studio. But we are managing
- 0:31Speaker 1: it through. It won't be a normal show, but it'll
- 0:33Speaker 1: be a good enough show.
- 0:34Speaker 3: How about that?
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's better than no show, right? Yeah, it used to be, what,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Squirrel and the Transmitter? Yeah, it used to have the
- 0:39Speaker 1: old Squirrel and the Transmitter. We don't have that today.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Usually it would have been a, for us, it would
- 0:43Speaker 2: have been a 5.30 a.m. call to Frank. Frank, wake up, Frank.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Frank would have been all pissed off. Oh, what do
- 0:49Speaker 3: you want?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Hey, the tower's down, the door's down. I'll get there
- 0:54Speaker 2: when I can get there.
- 0:55Speaker 1: As of now, though, I think we've barely wired this
- 0:59Speaker 1: thing together this morning.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So we're going to punt upset alert and move that
- 1:04Speaker 2: to Wednesday this week so that everybody can participate. I
- 1:09Speaker 2: have two games that I have my eyes on that
- 1:12Speaker 2: were floating around three and a half more time to
- 1:14Speaker 2: think through this. No, I'd love for one of them
- 1:16Speaker 2: to kick up to four. OK, I'd love to want
- 1:18Speaker 2: to kick to four so I can play that. Get
- 1:20Speaker 2: that little bonus half point and play that. We'll talk
- 1:24Speaker 2: some college football as we move throughout the show. I
- 1:26Speaker 2: will tell you, though, as always, our show brought to

- 2:28Speaker 2: backslash clay and always a lot of fun on Monday
- 2:31Speaker 2: Night Football where last night the Falcons go into New
- 2:35Speaker 2: Orleans and they run it down the Saints throat with
- 2:39Speaker 2: 205 rushing yards well the difference in a.
- 2:42Speaker 3: NFL quarterback we talked about this with the Falcons coming
- 2:45Speaker 3: off the blowout win over Green Bay you get Michael
- 2:47Speaker 3: Penix in you get Cooper Rush out it opens up
- 2:51Speaker 3: everything for Bijon third play from scrimmage takes it to
- 2:53Speaker 3: the house with ease and you know Falcons get up
- 2:56Speaker 3: 14 nothing on that early fumble and pretty much control
- 2:59Speaker 3: the entire game. If that is the version of the
- 3:02Speaker 3: Falcons that we are going to see, it's going to
- 3:04Speaker 3: be a two-team race in the NFC South, and it's
- 3:06Speaker 3: going to be a lot of fun. I know Carolina
- 3:08Speaker 3: completely dominated them week two in Atlanta, but that Falcons
- 3:12Speaker 3: offense is completely different right now. That's a heck of
- 3:14Speaker 3: a turnaround.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I mean, the first week they looked absolutely terrible, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: we were shoveling dirt on them, burying them week two.
- 3:21Speaker 1: They didn't look a whole lot better. And then just
- 3:23Speaker 1: all of a sudden in Green Bay last Thursday night,
- 3:26Speaker 1: They became this, like, legit run team. And I thought
- 3:29Speaker 1: it was just a flash in the pan. I thought
- 3:30Speaker 1: Green Bay had a bad game plan.
- 3:32Speaker 3: You know, what happened? I don't know.
- 3:33Speaker 1: But, buddy, last night they were the same team at
- 3:36Speaker 1: the Saints. That's two times they've gone on the road
- 3:38Speaker 1: and run it right down the opponent's throat. I think
- 3:40Speaker 1: LT hits it, though, when you're not one-dimensional, when you
- 3:43Speaker 1: know you can throw the football. That does free things
- 3:46Speaker 1: up a little bit.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Not to take anything away from Bijan and his riding partner,
- 3:49Speaker 2: Brian Robinson, but those two are little– lightning and thunder punch.
- 3:54Speaker 2: It's pretty good. You saw it.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Last year with Tyler Algier and now Brian Robinson's taking
- 3:58Speaker 3: that role in three touchdowns for Brian Robinson last night.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And he's going to be quite the compliment to what is,
- 4:03Speaker 3: I don't know, top three NFL player right now and
- 4:06Speaker 3: be John Robinson. I mean, he's that good when he's
- 4:08Speaker 3: got a quarterback and, boy, it was going to be
- 4:10Speaker 3: a terrible, terrible situation for Bijan if he was going
- 4:13Speaker 3: to be buried for 17 games with bad quarterback play. Yeah,
- 4:16Speaker 3: but now. But now Stefanski's got weapons out there. Even
- 4:19Speaker 3: a Kyle Pitts siding with three receptions, 47 yards last night.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Drake London, one of the best receivers in football. And
- 4:26Speaker 3: I think this defense is going to feed off how
- 4:29Speaker 3: good this offense is becoming right now. And You know,
- 4:32Speaker 3: don't look now, but the Falcons have got the Ravens
- 4:35Speaker 3: coming up this week. Lamar Jackson probably not going to play.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Left the stadium in a boot, did Lamar Jackson this
- 4:42Speaker 2: past week, even though he was running fine on it
- 4:44Speaker 2: to celebrate the kick, but left the stadium in a boot.
- 4:48Speaker 2: So he's going to be at least in question as
- 4:51Speaker 2: we work towards that game.
- 4:52Speaker 1: The guys in the chat, when the Falcons got off
- 4:54Speaker 1: such a bad start, were like, boy, they play three
- 4:56Speaker 1: straight primetime games.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And they do.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I mean, that is the Sunday night game of Baltimore. But, buddy,
- 5:01Speaker 1: they have been dominant in the first two they have played.
- 5:03Speaker 1: They have not been the problem in the prime. Everybody
- 5:05Speaker 1: was thinking the Falcons were going to be the problem
- 5:07Speaker 1: in the primetime games. It's been the Packers and the Saints.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I think with Lamar Jackson would have been a hell
- 5:11Speaker 1: of a game. I mean, you know, Atlanta wins this
- 5:13Speaker 1: game without Lamar Jackson, and that's going to be quite
- 5:16Speaker 1: the turnaround and quite the story.
- 5:18Speaker 3: But that's becoming a dangerous team. I mean, when you
- 5:21Speaker 3: can go out, put up 45, you can put up
- 5:24Speaker 3: 420 yards of offense with zero turnovers. That's the difference.
- 5:27Speaker 3: A Cooper rush was a turnover machine.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And nothing travels better than a run game.
- 5:32Speaker 3: That is right.
- 5:33Speaker 2: In all levels of football, if you can run, then
- 5:35Speaker 2: you can travel. You can do that on the road.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You can do that just about anywhere in any weather
- 5:40Speaker 2: conditions against any opponent if you can run the football.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And what Bijan, and listen, they had one really great year,
- 5:49Speaker 2: but when the Lions had that great one regular season,
- 5:52Speaker 2: when they had Jameer and David Montgomery, That was a
- 5:56Speaker 2: complimentary punch there. There were times I thought Montgomery was
- 5:59Speaker 2: the better back that year, or at least more consistent,
- 6:01Speaker 2: but Jameer.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Had the flash.
- 6:03Speaker 1: There's no doubt who the alpha is in that room,
- 6:06Speaker 1: but to be able to get near the goal line
- 6:08Speaker 1: and have B-Rob able to punch that in, three touchdowns
- 6:12Speaker 1: from him last night, 62 yards, 145 from Bijan with
- 6:16Speaker 1: two touchdowns, and a 45-24 win for New Orleans. And
- 6:21Speaker 1: that comes as we were just– talking about Carolina yesterday
- 6:27Speaker 1: and how good they could be. And now it looks
- 6:31Speaker 1: like a really exciting race in the NFC South between
- 6:33Speaker 1: the Falcons and the Panthers.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But it leads to this other question. Are we on
- 6:38Speaker 2: the verge of seeing Bryce Young, former Alabama quarterback, be
- 6:42Speaker 2: a star in this league? And all of a sudden,
- 6:46Speaker 2: how sexy is the NFC South if you've got that
- 6:49Speaker 2: group of talent with the Falcons? And if Bryce Young
- 6:52Speaker 2: and that offense continues to do what they're doing. Do
- 6:55Speaker 2: you think Bryce Young is right here on the doorstep
- 6:58Speaker 2: of being a star in this league?
- 6:59Speaker 3: I think he is if he can stay healthy. You
- 7:01Speaker 3: still watch him out there. He's putting up massive numbers
- 7:03Speaker 3: under Dave Canales in this offense. But he just still
- 7:07Speaker 3: looks so slight, and you're just like, damn, how long
- 7:09Speaker 3: can he really stay in there and play a full
- 7:11Speaker 3: 17 games? But he's been able to do it.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I was about to say, I mean, you asked that question,
- 7:15Speaker 1: but how many games has he missed?
- 7:17Speaker 3: But I do think, and, you know, week 17 is
- 7:19Speaker 3: when they play again, the Falcons at the Panthers. I mean,
- 7:23Speaker 3: that could be one of those 45-42 type games, the
- 7:25Speaker 3: way these two offenses are playing currently.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, really interesting last night in Atlanta with all the
- 7:31Speaker 2: emotions of 20 years after getting back into the Dome
- 7:35Speaker 2: after Katrina. stirred up a lot of emotions. If you
- 7:37Speaker 2: watched that broadcast last night, that was one of those events. And,
- 7:42Speaker 2: you know, we've had so many of them in our
- 7:43Speaker 2: lifetimes of big events. But what Katrina did to that
- 7:48Speaker 2: area of the country and then the aftermath and what
- 7:51Speaker 2: football meant to get back into that dome for that city.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And there were a lot of people. Do you guys
- 7:56Speaker 2: remember when?
- 7:58Speaker 3: I remember where I was watching that game with Steve
- 8:01Speaker 3: Gleason blocking the ball. I was at the Buffalo Wild
- 8:03Speaker 3: Wings here on Highway 280. But, you know, it was
- 8:06Speaker 3: just one of those moments because it was so, you know, again,
- 8:09Speaker 3: it was 9-11 like. You know, I mean, with everybody
- 8:14Speaker 3: coming together after Katrina, I mean, I don't think we
- 8:17Speaker 3: really registered until each and every day the impact of
- 8:20Speaker 3: Katrina on that community.
- 8:23Speaker 2: We went down as our church, as many churches did,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and helped do some recovery work and some rebuilding and
- 8:30Speaker 2: cleaning up and that kind of thing. And I remember
- 8:32Speaker 2: when the tornado happened in Tuscaloosa and all the devastation there,
- 8:39Speaker 2: how many churches came back from the New Orleans area
- 8:42Speaker 2: to help us out. It was really a neat thing
- 8:45Speaker 2: to see. But the discussion in that city right after
- 8:49Speaker 2: Katrina was, are the saints going to go somewhere else?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Are they going to stay in New Orleans? Or with
- 8:55Speaker 2: the damage to the dome, what it's done to the city,
- 8:58Speaker 2: the people that moved out of New Orleans and didn't
- 9:00Speaker 2: come back, would New Orleans lose the Saints? And they didn't.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I think Goodell stepped in and was like, no. I mean,
- 9:09Speaker 1: that is, you want to talk about the worst look
- 9:12Speaker 1: your league could possibly have?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Right. Take away a pretty historic franchise.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Now, they haven't won a ton, obviously, but it's a
- 9:20Speaker 1: franchise that's got a lot of fan support, even in
- 9:22Speaker 1: the bad times. Take that away because of a natural disaster?
- 9:25Speaker 1: I mean, that is a Terrible look for your league.
- 9:28Speaker 3: It was. And New Orleans basically lost half their population
- 9:31Speaker 3: after that with people relocating to Baton Rouge and Houston.
- 9:35Speaker 3: But that city.
- 9:35Speaker 2: A lot of people moved to Birmingham and this area.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I hate Saints fans. I hate the Saints. But boy,
- 9:42Speaker 3: I mean, they are passionate. They are. And a Sunday
- 9:45Speaker 3: in New Orleans is next level. I mean, that is
- 9:48Speaker 3: their go-to.
- 9:49Speaker 1: And they're passionate about a bad franchise generally. Now, they
- 9:52Speaker 1: have been better since Drew Brees got there. But that
- 9:54Speaker 1: was a passionate... fan base when their franchise sucked, when
- 9:57Speaker 1: they were wearing bags on their head, when they were
- 9:59Speaker 1: the ain't. They have not historically had a ton to
- 10:02Speaker 1: cheer about, but they've always supported that team pretty well
- 10:04Speaker 1: down there. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Arch Manning is no longer a slotted first-round draft pick.
- 10:10Speaker 2: He shouldn't be. In the latest mocks, he is out
- 10:13Speaker 2: of the first round.
- 10:14Speaker 3: So much so, he made me back at Texas. I
- 10:17Speaker 3: don't know if you were actually crawling to the fact
- 10:20Speaker 3: that you thought that maybe the Saints take Arch, but
- 10:23Speaker 3: I think Tyler Shuck's good. I do. He didn't play
- 10:26Speaker 3: good last night.
- 10:26Speaker 2: He got booed a little bit last night.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Chris Alave finally is being able to earn his money
- 10:32Speaker 3: and get opportunities and targets, but I mean, it's just
- 10:35Speaker 3: not a good Saints team. I mean, they're okay, but
- 10:37Speaker 3: I think Chug's fine.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Our opening comments about Monday Night Football brought to you
- 10:41Speaker 2: by HardRock.bet backslash Clay. HardRock.bet backslash Clay. Anything interesting in
- 10:48Speaker 2: the chat room from the folks over there? I always
- 10:50Speaker 2: wonder in our market, you know, we're such big Braves,
- 10:53Speaker 2: such a big Braves market in Birmingham where we do
- 10:57Speaker 2: our show out of like everyone in this area, a
- 10:59Speaker 2: majority Braves fans, except for the three of us. The Rays, Dodgers, Rams, Buccaneers.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Dolphins.
- 11:06Speaker 2: But where are we on the Falcons in the area?
- 11:09Speaker 1: It's never been an overwhelming town. Titans, Falcons, and somethings.
- 11:16Speaker 1: This is what I've always wondered about Birmingham. I have
- 11:18Speaker 1: people all the time like, how could you grow up
- 11:20Speaker 1: in Birmingham and not be a Braves fan? I was like, well,
- 11:22Speaker 1: what's the Falcons record? Oh, I'm a Cowboys fan. I'm like, well,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I don't see how that... What's the difference? What's the difference?
- 11:27Speaker 1: And people always tell me there's a difference. I just
- 11:29Speaker 1: can't put it in words. And I'm like, I don't
- 11:30Speaker 1: think there is a difference.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Like... Yeah, I think the difference was it was easier
- 11:34Speaker 3: to take a family of four to a baseball game
- 11:36Speaker 3: in Fulton County. It was affordable back then. And then
- 11:40Speaker 3: the Braves went from being so bad to being so good.
- 11:44Speaker 3: And there were so many people that and this is
- 11:46Speaker 3: at least what I experienced firsthand. And I'm sure you
- 11:49Speaker 3: guys did to a degree. Growing up with all of
- 11:52Speaker 3: these pseudo-Braves fans, but once they got good, they jumped
- 11:56Speaker 3: back in 100% on that bandwagon.
- 11:58Speaker 1: There was nothing for them to cheer for for most
- 11:59Speaker 1: of our childhood. Dale Murphy was the only thing you
- 12:02Speaker 1: could cheer for for our entire childhood.
- 12:04Speaker 3: If there was a TBS for a Nashville baseball team
- 12:07Speaker 3: and a WGN for a New Orleans baseball team, you
- 12:10Speaker 3: probably would have more of that. But there was only
- 12:12Speaker 3: one baseball market that was close.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Well, we did get every Falcons game here.
- 12:16Speaker 3: We did. Growing up.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And it was the afternoon game because they were playing
- 12:20Speaker 1: a lot of the West Coast teams.
- 12:21Speaker 3: They were playing the Rams, the 49ers. I'm trying to
- 12:25Speaker 3: remember who all was there. It was just the 49ers
- 12:26Speaker 3: and Saints. St. Louis. It was the St. Louis Rams
- 12:29Speaker 3: right at the time. Yeah, well, way back it was
- 12:31Speaker 3: the LA Rams. Yeah, the Anaheim LA Rams. Because the
- 12:33Speaker 3: NFC West was four teams. It was the Rams, it
- 12:35Speaker 3: was the Falcons, it was the 49ers, and the Saints.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Such a weird division. And the Cardinals, right? Nope. Cardinals
- 12:39Speaker 3: were in the NFC East.
- 12:40Speaker 2: They sure were. That's exactly right.
- 12:42Speaker 3: St. Louis Cardinals. Yeah. St.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Louis Cardinals in the NFC East. There were weird divisions
- 12:47Speaker 1: back then.
- 12:48Speaker 3: What?
- 12:49Speaker 2: No, Seattle was an AFC team.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Seattle was AFC. A lot of people forget that. They
- 12:53Speaker 3: were in the AFC West.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Like the Colts were in the Dolphins division most of
- 12:56Speaker 1: my childhood. The Colts were an AFC East team with
- 12:58Speaker 1: the Dolphins. My Bucs were in with the Packers.
- 13:02Speaker 2: We did correct that.
- 13:05Speaker 3: The divisions got way screwed up. Yeah, the NFL finally,
- 13:08Speaker 3: you know, the NFL gets everything right. They had the
- 13:10Speaker 3: geography screwed up before... We had realignment in college football. Yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 3: the division. If you look at the old school divisions,
- 13:16Speaker 3: you're like, what were we doing? Virginia Tech's about to
- 13:19Speaker 3: play a conference game in Berkeley. Yeah, that's true.
- 13:21Speaker 2: It's going the other way. College is now the one
- 13:23Speaker 2: that's got it all screwed up.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Upset alert.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Coming up tomorrow.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Tomorrow now.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Let's not touch on Virginia Tech Cal too much.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Okay. I'm kidding. I don't have that. Yeah, well, I mean,
- 13:32Speaker 3: you said there was two that you were sniffing around threes.
- 13:34Speaker 2: With an extra day, I'll erase the one I've got
- 13:37Speaker 2: in a heartbeat.
- 13:39Speaker 3: In a heartbeat. Well, I can't erase mine. They're too
- 13:40Speaker 3: much work. Yeah. I, I, you know, I did mine
- 13:42Speaker 3: in like eight minutes and actually doesn't look bad. Like
- 13:44Speaker 3: I'm like, that works. Mine took maybe an hour. I
- 13:47Speaker 3: put way too much effort into mine. Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So you're not changing yours.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Oh, I'm not. I've been on mine a long time.
- 13:53Speaker 2: You're not changing yours.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I'm not changing mine. So feel free to change yours.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I don't care. I'm white.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Until the ballots in it's, it's open to change.
- 14:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You won't be hearing from the guys in the back
- 14:05Speaker 2: room today. They're there though, as we work through, the show.
- 14:10Speaker 2: And right now, we're iffy on guests or not guests.
- 14:13Speaker 2: So we'll come up on whether or not Brooks Austin
- 14:17Speaker 2: was supposed to be with us. Right now, we're going
- 14:18Speaker 2: to put Brooks on yellow light and maybe not get
- 14:21Speaker 2: to him. To baseball in just a second. But I
- 14:24Speaker 2: did want to point out that in the NFL, there
- 14:29Speaker 2: are some 0-4 teams. My Buccaneers are there. And no
- 14:33Speaker 2: longer does it look like it's no big deal starting
- 14:36Speaker 2: off 0-4 because eight and nine is going to win
- 14:38Speaker 2: that division. We're now looking like it's going to be
- 14:43Speaker 2: a much better champion in the NFC South than eight
- 14:47Speaker 2: and nine.
- 14:48Speaker 3: They will at least have a winning record. I think
- 14:50Speaker 3: it's a nine or ten win. That's where Atlanta or
- 14:53Speaker 3: Carolina are for me right now. I don't trust either
- 14:55Speaker 3: one of the defenses 100%. These offenses are rounding into form,
- 14:59Speaker 3: but week in, week out, stacked up against some other competition,
- 15:03Speaker 3: I'm not sure. But I think Carolina and Atlanta are
- 15:05Speaker 3: both Nine and eight, ten and seven type teams.
- 15:08Speaker 2: So 0-4 Buccaneers, 0-4 Dolphins.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Done.
- 15:12Speaker 2: 0-4 Chargers?
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yep. Who else?
- 15:14Speaker 1: We're Texans. You've got 0-4 versus 0-4 Sunday. That's as
- 15:19Speaker 1: bad as it's going to get, Houston and Tennessee.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and then the Titans. The night last one. How
- 15:24Speaker 3: bad is that game?
- 15:24Speaker 2: 175 teams have started 0-4. Only the 1992 Chargers have
- 15:27Speaker 2: rallied to make a playoff.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah. I said one. I didn't realize it was Stan
- 15:35Speaker 3: Humphries and the Chargers from 1992. That's a random. I
- 15:38Speaker 3: want to be Ross Chargers team. I would not have
- 15:41Speaker 3: answered that properly at all.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And that's not a strikey or anything like that.
- 15:46Speaker 3: No, no. I do think it might be statistically a
- 15:50Speaker 3: little easier with the extra game. Back then it was 16.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Now it's 17 over the last three, four years. So
- 15:56Speaker 3: with that 17th game, maybe there is a percentage point
- 15:59Speaker 3: or two. I don't see, you know, like I watch
- 16:03Speaker 3: the Texans, and I think the Texans are still a
- 16:05Speaker 3: pretty good team. I watch the Chargers, and I have
- 16:07Speaker 3: no idea what happened to them. They're not good. But
- 16:10Speaker 3: all the 0-4s outside of the Texans have no shot,
- 16:12Speaker 3: and I still don't think the Texans do.
- 16:14Speaker 1: You know the reason I couldn't make it be the Chargers?
- 16:17Speaker 1: When Brooks told me that yesterday, I was so surprised
- 16:19Speaker 1: because the thing I remember about that Chargers team is
- 16:21Speaker 1: Miami beat them. My Dolphins beat them. But it was
- 16:24Speaker 1: in the divisional round of the playoffs. I was like,
- 16:25Speaker 1: so not only did they start 0-4, they actually won
- 16:28Speaker 1: a wild card game.
- 16:28Speaker 3: And I had to look back. They beat the Chiefs
- 16:30Speaker 3: 17-0 in the wild card game. Was that Natron Means?
- 16:32Speaker 1: I think so. I think Stan Humphreys, Natron Means, and
- 16:35Speaker 1: that group. So they beat the Chiefs. And I'm looking
- 16:39Speaker 1: at it right now. Let me correct the score, though.
- 16:40Speaker 3: 24-10.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Close to 17-0.
- 16:43Speaker 3: No, wait a minute. That's the regular season.
- 16:45Speaker 1: No, they beat the Chiefs in the playoffs, though, to advance.
- 16:47Speaker 1: That's why I couldn't make it. When Brooks showed me
- 16:48Speaker 1: that yesterday, I was walking out, and I was like,
- 16:50Speaker 1: that can't be right because the Dolphins beat them in
- 16:53Speaker 1: the divisional round of the playoffs because that was the
- 16:55Speaker 1: last time the Dolphins went to the AFC Championship game.
- 16:57Speaker 1: They lost to Buffalo right after that in Miami.
- 17:00Speaker 2: 1992 is the last time you opened to the AFC Championship.
- 17:03Speaker 3: That is correct. Yes.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I know.
- 17:05Speaker 3: It's hard to believe. 1992, Jim. Last time the Dolphins
- 17:08Speaker 3: were in the AFC Championship. I know. Well, think about
- 17:11Speaker 3: the Yankees now in an 0-2 hole. I know we're
- 17:13Speaker 3: about to get to baseball, but it'll be 17 years
- 17:15Speaker 3: since they won a championship. And I saw where Forrester's
- 17:19Speaker 3: White Sox are up 2-0 on their series. They go
- 17:21Speaker 3: back home for Game 3. They haven't clinched a playoff
- 17:24Speaker 3: series at home since, you want to guess the year?
- 17:28Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 17:29Speaker 3: 1906. 1906.
- 17:31Speaker 2: 1906. We're into baseball now. So today you get Dodgers, Braves,
- 17:35Speaker 2: and Brewers, Padres. But last night, let's start with the
- 17:38Speaker 2: White Sox that you're talking about. The 4-3 win. Sean
- 17:41Speaker 2: Burke comes out and gets 13 straight outs. And now
- 17:45Speaker 2: the White Sox, they played all four of these games
- 17:48Speaker 2: in the postseason on the road. Can you imagine the
- 17:51Speaker 2: scene tomorrow at Chicago when they come back into action
- 17:55Speaker 2: with a chance? They got two shots to clinch at home.
- 17:58Speaker 2: And three shots to move on to the American League
- 18:00Speaker 2: Championship Series.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Yeah, they are playing. I mean, the chemistry with this
- 18:04Speaker 3: team right now is pretty incredible. They haven't lost since
- 18:07Speaker 3: going back to September 26th, I think, is the date
- 18:11Speaker 3: on that. But watching Gavin Williams' deal yesterday for the Guardians,
- 18:16Speaker 3: you know, he was on pace. I think Charles Nagy
- 18:18Speaker 3: has the postseason record for strikeouts for the Guardians. He
- 18:20Speaker 3: ends up with 11. I think the record was 12. But.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And you knew he was on a pitch count. I
- 18:26Speaker 3: think when he got to pitch like 93 or 94,
- 18:28Speaker 3: you're like, damn, how long are they going to be
- 18:29Speaker 3: able to leave him in? And once he got pulled,
- 18:32Speaker 3: they were able to manufacture that three-run six that was
- 18:35Speaker 3: the difference. But I was texting Scott. I was like,
- 18:38Speaker 3: you guys don't get Gavin Williams out. You got no shot.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Like that game seemed to be over, but that's how
- 18:43Speaker 3: quickly it flipped.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Just the opposite in the Rays-Yankees game. In fact, I
- 18:48Speaker 2: thought the Rays were going to blow it because they
- 18:50Speaker 2: were leaving so many people on base the first three innings.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Tampa Bay beats the Yankees 5-2. First, the Tampa Bay
- 18:56Speaker 2: pitching has been unbelievable. Just five hits and two runs
- 19:00Speaker 2: in two games. Both of them have been Ben Rice
- 19:03Speaker 2: solo home runs last night, so you've shut down the
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yankees with unbelievable pitching from Tampa Bay. But the Yankees
- 19:09Speaker 2: in the field, three errors in the first inning, but
- 19:13Speaker 2: it only leads to one run. They end up with
- 19:15Speaker 2: five total, four in the field and one by catcher interference,
- 19:18Speaker 2: which technically is an error, so five, but four fielding errors.
- 19:23Speaker 2: And they just have been sloppy, sloppy on the bases
- 19:26Speaker 2: in game one, sloppy last night in the field. They're
- 19:31Speaker 2: not getting breaks like a ball hit the B ring
- 19:34Speaker 2: and was caught by, I believe, the second baseman or
- 19:36Speaker 2: the right fielder in dead center. Just isn't bouncing New
- 19:40Speaker 2: York's way. But they are the only team or the
- 19:43Speaker 2: most recent team to come back from two down in
- 19:45Speaker 2: the best of five they did it in 2017 so
- 19:48Speaker 2: this series by no stretch is.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Over not over but schlittler you know your your cy
- 19:53Speaker 3: young by far favorite.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Didn't hit him hard from the get-go though.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Did not have his best outing and on top of
- 19:59Speaker 3: that you mentioned how sloppy they were in the field
- 20:01Speaker 3: i mean as many errors last night four one away
- 20:04Speaker 3: from a franchise record as they had hits So this
- 20:07Speaker 3: has not been good. You mentioned the only two runs
- 20:09Speaker 3: they had were Ben Rice solo shots, but they do
- 20:12Speaker 3: go back. Game three, Yankee Stadium. So you take care
- 20:16Speaker 3: of business. They're going to be favored in games three
- 20:17Speaker 3: and four, and they come back for a decisive game five.
- 20:20Speaker 3: We'll see what happens. But this doesn't seem like your
- 20:24Speaker 3: uncle's Yankees. It's crazy.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Like, you could go to a local T-ball game and
- 20:27Speaker 1: not see three errors in an inning. I mean, it's
- 20:29Speaker 1: just nuts that a major league franchise can have three
- 20:32Speaker 1: errors in one inning. Yeah, well, the first shot was–
- 20:35Speaker 1: A lot of top spin hit fairly hard on the
- 20:37Speaker 1: turf that, you know, the Yankees play on natural grass.
- 20:41Speaker 3: That's an advantage.
- 20:41Speaker 2: They play on turf a lot, but it's new turf,
- 20:43Speaker 2: a little bouncier, and it bounced a little higher on
- 20:46Speaker 2: him than he was expecting.
- 20:47Speaker 3: And then there was the panicked double play they were
- 20:49Speaker 3: trying to turn, which they really forced that, and the
- 20:52Speaker 3: throw was awful.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It was a horrible throw.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And then.
- 20:56Speaker 2: The guy at second base for the Yankees, he almost
- 20:59Speaker 2: screwed up a couple other times throughout the game. He
- 21:01Speaker 2: seems to be. Sketchy at best with the glove.
- 21:04Speaker 3: You know, it's going to be really interesting just a
- 21:07Speaker 3: game away both from a Rays-White Sox ALCS.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I mentioned that to Forrester when I got in. He's
- 21:13Speaker 2: a better White Sox fan than I'm a Rays fan.
- 21:15Speaker 2: He watches more games by that I mean. But to
- 21:19Speaker 2: see our two low income when it comes to salaries paid.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I think we're like 27th and 29th in payroll. And
- 21:29Speaker 2: one of us would be in the World Series if
- 21:31Speaker 2: we can finish this thing off. That's pretty remarkable. I've had,
- 21:36Speaker 2: unlike the Dolphins, I've had two Tampa Bay Rays World
- 21:39Speaker 2: Series trips.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah, against Philly and against L.A.
- 21:43Speaker 2: And they've been recent years.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and that was, you know, that big storyline of
- 21:46Speaker 3: that Tampa and Dodgers series was the payroll, the difference.
- 21:50Speaker 2: And it will be again this year.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be again, you know, if the Dodgers
- 21:54Speaker 3: are able to get there. But can you imagine Dodgers
- 21:56Speaker 3: versus White Sox with the storyline of a team that
- 21:59Speaker 3: had lost, you know, back-to-back 100 lost seasons.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I mean, it's one of the more incredible turnarounds we've
- 22:06Speaker 3: ever seen in the history of Major League Baseball.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I love this Rays team. They're young and scrappy,
- 22:11Speaker 2: and they're giving it a good shot. And then, you know,
- 22:13Speaker 2: you can't dislike the White Sox. Can they finish these
- 22:16Speaker 2: two teams off? Now the Braves play today, 5 o'clock.
- 22:20Speaker 2: You know, good to put Los Angeles and the Braves,
- 22:23Speaker 2: two of the more popular franchises, on at 5 o'clock
- 22:25Speaker 2: in the afternoon on FS1 to make way for a
- 22:28Speaker 2: Brewers-Padres West Coast at 8.30 on FS1. I mean, Milwaukee
- 22:33Speaker 2: and San Diego. And that just screams TV ratings. It's
- 22:36Speaker 2: a prime time. Dodgers brave. Give it to the folks
- 22:39Speaker 2: who do the TV. They know they have the Yankees.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So they were like, we're going to put them in
- 22:44Speaker 2: prime time. Who they play, do not care. Yankees in
- 22:47Speaker 2: prime time. Well, now you have a day when you've
- 22:49Speaker 2: got the Dodgers and Yankees aren't playing. Put the Dodgers
- 22:52Speaker 2: in prime time. And start that other game. I mean,
- 22:55Speaker 2: go at least 630 Central, 730 Eastern. And then kick Brewers.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I mean, it's late night in San Diego.
- 23:01Speaker 3: What else are they doing on a Tuesday?
- 23:03Speaker 2: Baseball fans will stay up for that. And for San Diego,
- 23:06Speaker 2: that's normal time for them. I don't understand the TV schedule.
- 23:10Speaker 2: But you get the Braves today at home. Feels like
- 23:13Speaker 2: they've got the momentum.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Dodgers-Braves.
- 23:15Speaker 2: They've got Yamamoto against Chris Sell. They couldn't dream this
- 23:19Speaker 2: up any better.
- 23:19Speaker 3: 1-1.
- 23:20Speaker 2: But the betting line at Hard Rock Bet. Minus 110 Dodgers,
- 23:24Speaker 2: minus 109 Braves. It's a virtual pick-em.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Just based on that number, the way Sale has
- 23:30Speaker 3: been throwing and the momentum the Braves got stealing game two.
- 23:35Speaker 3: this seems like a Dodger, Dodger win for me. I
- 23:37Speaker 3: don't know. I don't know how you guys feel about it.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I mean, Sale could obviously go out and deal for
- 23:42Speaker 3: seven and give up nothing.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Do you say that because of something in the betting market?
- 23:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I just think that number, I mean, Sale should really,
- 23:51Speaker 3: I know it's the Dodgers and they've got an incredible lineup,
- 23:54Speaker 3: but Sale should be about a 125 favorite.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 23:57Speaker 3: So it just seems a little off to me.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Padres pretty big, minus 136 tonight at home against Milwaukee.
- 24:04Speaker 2: You can play those if you're in the States with

- 25:51Speaker 2: Boy, the Athletic today asked a really interesting question I
- 25:54Speaker 2: can't wait to ask you guys. After five years of
- 25:58Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley at USC, right now today, would you rather
- 26:04Speaker 2: be USC or Oklahoma? Fascinating question. Would you rather be
- 26:09Speaker 2: USC or Oklahoma five years after the exit from norman
- 26:14Speaker 2: to la you.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Know i don't think either is really far off i
- 26:18Speaker 3: mean i think usc's got a dynamic offense right now
- 26:21Speaker 3: this gary patterson defense hasn't come together i think oklahoma's
- 26:25Speaker 3: defense is still legitimate you wonder if they're ever going
- 26:28Speaker 3: to throw the towel in based on how bad the
- 26:30Speaker 3: offense has been you know i mean one is still
- 26:34Speaker 3: got an opportunity maybe to get to a college football
- 26:36Speaker 3: playoff in usc if everything broke right which i don't
- 26:38Speaker 3: think they will and One hosted a playoff game last year,
- 26:41Speaker 3: so I don't think both are completely broken. I think
- 26:44Speaker 3: it's really quick fixes. Now, are the right guys in place?
- 26:48Speaker 3: I don't think Lincoln Riley is the right guy. I
- 26:51Speaker 3: don't know about Brent Venables. I don't know how you
- 26:53Speaker 3: guys feel about Venables, but this offense to be broken
- 26:56Speaker 3: is so crazy because Lincoln's offenses were so good there.
- 27:00Speaker 3: And the defenses were so bad. Now you've got dominant defenses.
- 27:03Speaker 3: You've got horrible offenses. And it's got to be maddening
- 27:06Speaker 3: to be a Sooners fan right now. And at the
- 27:08Speaker 3: same time, USC, I don't think their fan base cares
- 27:11Speaker 3: too much.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Isn't it crazy, though? We've buried USC, and they're only 5-1.
- 27:16Speaker 2: And I know what's ahead of them. But they're 5-1.
- 27:21Speaker 3: And it was 27-27 in the Coliseum against Oregon in
- 27:24Speaker 3: the fourth quarter.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we buried USC way too early.
- 27:28Speaker 3: I just don't trust Lincoln Riley. I don't know where
- 27:30Speaker 3: you are, Brown. I mean, I watch the mannerisms. I
- 27:33Speaker 3: watch the body language of the rest of the team.
- 27:36Speaker 3: I just don't know how invested, as far as winning,
- 27:39Speaker 3: they are. I just think.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I've seen enough of Lincoln Riley to know he's never
- 27:45Speaker 1: going to have the commitment to defense required to win
- 27:47Speaker 1: a championship. And that's what would frustrate me if I'm
- 27:49Speaker 1: a USC fan. But you knew that when you hired
- 27:51Speaker 1: him from Oklahoma. You already had that evidence in Oklahoma.
- 27:54Speaker 1: He's tried to fix it in L.A., but it never
- 27:58Speaker 1: gets any better. When I say tried to fix it,
- 28:00Speaker 1: he's hired the people that supposedly can fix it, all
- 28:02Speaker 1: the hot names. Every time there's a hot-named defensive coordinator
- 28:05Speaker 1: out there, it seems like he's trying to hire him
- 28:07Speaker 1: at USC or has hired him at USC.
- 28:09Speaker 3: But it never fixes anything. So I just don't know.
- 28:13Speaker 1: If you ask me, would I trade now, like this
- 28:17Speaker 1: moment in time, I'd rather be a USC fan this season.
- 28:21Speaker 1: But in the time Lincoln Riley has been there, I'd
- 28:23Speaker 1: probably rather be an Oklahoma fan. They've at least gone
- 28:25Speaker 1: to a college football playoff.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I think the easier fix is going to be USC,
- 28:29Speaker 3: just based on this. Oklahoma is right there in the
- 28:32Speaker 3: middle of everything going on in the SEC. And the
- 28:34Speaker 3: SEC has gotten so cluttered as far as, like, the
- 28:37Speaker 3: depth of the conference and how good the conference is overall.
- 28:41Speaker 3: We maybe wouldn't have said this last year, but USC
- 28:44Speaker 3: is still unique. It's still a big brand on the
- 28:47Speaker 3: West Coast. Oklahoma's fighting everybody in the SEC for their athletes.
- 28:52Speaker 3: USC's got a different kind of pipeline, just different situation altogether.
- 28:59Speaker 3: I think it's going to be an easier fix at USC.
- 29:01Speaker 3: I could be completely wrong. That's a more appealing job.
- 29:05Speaker 3: If both those jobs came open this year, I think
- 29:07Speaker 3: USC would be more appealing.
- 29:08Speaker 2: More on that in a second, but I got one
- 29:11Speaker 2: on my own here. Would you rather be Michigan or
- 29:14Speaker 2: Penn State right now? Because you have two coaches that
- 29:17Speaker 2: you hired late in the process, and you get guys
- 29:21Speaker 2: who are really good at their old stops. But what
- 29:24Speaker 2: are they, where they are, and what the future looks like?
- 29:27Speaker 2: Would you rather be Michigan or Penn State right now?
- 29:29Speaker 1: Matt Campbell is getting so much criticism for this two
- 29:32Speaker 1: losses that he's taken to Wisconsin and Northwestern.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Well, Whittingham, people are, I'm starting to hear nationally, you know,
- 29:38Speaker 2: he doesn't look good.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Invested. Yeah, doesn't look invested.
- 29:43Speaker 1: You may end up being right about this, not by
- 29:45Speaker 1: Whittingham's choice, but by Michigan's choice.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Well, I heard it for the first time on our
- 29:48Speaker 2: national show this morning. What I've talked about often, it
- 29:51Speaker 2: was Danny and Roy, and I know Danny occasionally will
- 29:55Speaker 2: peek in and listen to us. I don't know if
- 29:56Speaker 2: he got it from us, but they were talking about
- 29:59Speaker 2: Is it possible that Kyle Winningham is a one-and-done coach
- 30:03Speaker 2: at Michigan? He just doesn't look like he's bought in.
- 30:05Speaker 2: He's that interested in this. Can he retire at the
- 30:08Speaker 2: end of this year?
- 30:09Speaker 3: I think the last thing Michigan wants to do is
- 30:11Speaker 3: hire coach number three in four years.
- 30:15Speaker 2: That seems like a lot. Unless you get your forever coach.
- 30:18Speaker 3: If you get your forever coach, how dicey is that
- 30:20Speaker 3: in today's climate? That's right.
- 30:21Speaker 1: I don't want to get back on that carousel. I
- 30:23Speaker 1: think to be fair to Winningham, you got to let
- 30:26Speaker 1: him coach somebody other than Bryce Underwood. Like that's not
- 30:28Speaker 1: his quarterback. He did not recruit that quarterback. I, you know,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I don't know this, obviously I don't know this, but
- 30:34Speaker 1: I would have to think at some point he's been told, listen,
- 30:37Speaker 1: we've got a lot of best into this kid.
- 30:39Speaker 3: We need to play him. And, and maybe not, maybe that.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And Whittingham, I find it hard to believe. I know
- 30:45Speaker 3: he was upset that Utah kind of gave the push after,
- 30:48Speaker 3: you know, those two decades that, Hey, it's Morgan Scali's turn. We're,
- 30:52Speaker 3: we're ready to make this change. Um, I doubt he
- 30:55Speaker 3: would have told Michigan, I'm only going to do one year.
- 30:58Speaker 2: No, I don't. But did Michigan tell him, we need
- 31:01Speaker 2: somebody to hold it down until we find our forever?
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but I think that's more of a three-
- 31:07Speaker 3: to five-year plan. But if this thing turns into a
- 31:09Speaker 3: major disaster, maybe so. Penn State's just got to be patient.
- 31:13Speaker 3: I can't explain Friday night. I loved it because we
- 31:16Speaker 3: were all over Northwestern. But physically, they just got whipped
- 31:20Speaker 3: by what is– I mean, it's less talent. Let's call
- 31:22Speaker 3: it like it is, or at least– Penn State's got
- 31:25Speaker 3: a little more talent.
- 31:26Speaker 2: They got outcoached. I mean, I would imagine that Penn
- 31:28Speaker 2: State didn't go into that game thinking they were going
- 31:30Speaker 2: to be facing the wing tee.
- 31:32Speaker 3: That's what it looked like.
- 31:33Speaker 2: And apparently that is something you can adjust to on
- 31:35Speaker 2: the sidelines.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Alabama unveiling the triple option. I do think the Wisconsin,
- 31:40Speaker 3: that was a shocker because they're up 17 at home
- 31:42Speaker 3: and they end up losing that game 24-20. But if
- 31:44Speaker 3: they win that game and lose to Northwestern, it's kind
- 31:46Speaker 3: of a blip and you're like, okay, let's clean this up.
- 31:49Speaker 3: We take care of business at home against USC in
- 31:51Speaker 3: this wideout. then we're back to four and one. It's
- 31:54Speaker 3: not that big of a deal, but now that you've
- 31:55Speaker 3: lost back to back, you host SC as a one
- 31:57Speaker 3: and a half point favorite. Then you go to Michigan,
- 32:00Speaker 3: albeit not a great Michigan team, but defensively against Penn
- 32:03Speaker 3: State right now, be a tough matchup for Penn State.
- 32:07Speaker 3: You still got to go to Washington. You've still got Minnesota.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I mean, they got a lot of winnable games. Again,
- 32:11Speaker 3: we said this yesterday, it was a ready-made playoff schedule
- 32:14Speaker 3: in year one for Matt Campbell, but you got to
- 32:16Speaker 3: be patient with the guy. I mean, he did incredible
- 32:18Speaker 3: things in Ames and Maybe it is one of these
- 32:21Speaker 3: examples of he does more with less, and this is
- 32:24Speaker 3: not going to be a good fit, but I think
- 32:26Speaker 3: you've got to give it some time.
- 32:26Speaker 1: But if you got Matt Campbell wrong, you're stuck in
- 32:29Speaker 1: that for a little bit because you mentioned the other
- 32:30Speaker 1: day you got that guarantee contract, right?
- 32:31Speaker 3: Wasn't it $ 75 million guarantee? Yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Isn't that what you said? So you're stuck there for
- 32:35Speaker 1: a minute. I don't imagine you're quite as stuck.
- 32:37Speaker 3: With winning him.
- 32:39Speaker 2: It's fully guaranteed, too.
- 32:40Speaker 3: $ 75.
- 32:40Speaker 2: 2 million.
- 32:42Speaker 3: That's on Matt Campbell. That's everything. I don't know what
- 32:46Speaker 3: Whittingham's is, but I would imagine it's not as stuck
- 32:48Speaker 3: as you are. And I think Michigan, you know, the
- 32:50Speaker 3: money Michigan's got to begin with, Chiron Moore, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 3: with calls, I don't know what that settlement ended up
- 32:56Speaker 3: looking like. They paid a ton to the law firm
- 32:58Speaker 3: to come up with that, though. But you think about
- 32:59Speaker 3: how much Penn State had to give James Franklin in
- 33:01Speaker 3: season last year. There is no chance. Matt Campbell is
- 33:04Speaker 3: safe as safe can be for three years probably. I
- 33:07Speaker 3: heard yesterday Shane Beamer's not going anywhere. No, no, no.
- 33:10Speaker 2: I got the details on that. Shane Beamer at South Carolina,
- 33:15Speaker 2: as they get ready to go play Florida, $ 22. 5 million
- 33:20Speaker 2: is what he's owed, all of it. It gets up
- 33:23Speaker 2: to $ 40 million when you take care of the coaches
- 33:25Speaker 2: and you go through the process of hiring a new one.
- 33:27Speaker 2: But more importantly, they have two different 30-year bond loans
- 33:34Speaker 2: out on a $ 350 million stadium upgrade at William Bryce
- 33:39Speaker 2: and some other football projects that they're already counting the
- 33:45Speaker 2: TV money that comes in, the shared revenue money to
- 33:49Speaker 2: pay those 30-year bonds as they do that. At South Carolina,
- 33:55Speaker 2: everyone that covers South Carolina writing, and I think it's
- 33:58Speaker 2: the Post-Courier Journal, which was reporting that they believe South
- 34:04Speaker 2: Carolina is tied right now to Shane because of the
- 34:10Speaker 2: financial situations. Not necessarily writing that one check, but all
- 34:14Speaker 2: the other things they have going on in the athletic department.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, the things that we don't know. It seems obvious
- 34:18Speaker 3: on the surface like this is just not working. They've
- 34:20Speaker 3: lost nine consecutive SEC games. Now, the way you could
- 34:24Speaker 3: spin it if you're South Carolina, we're a great first-half team.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Play us first half. Yeah. And you're going to be fine.
- 34:31Speaker 3: What if they put everything they owe on these bonds,
- 34:33Speaker 3: just put it on their first half? I mean, hell,
- 34:35Speaker 3: they get off to quick starts. They really do.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I mean, that's why he's in the situation he's in, Lance,
- 34:40Speaker 1: is they get off to quick starts and cannot sustain them.
- 34:41Speaker 3: I mean, if you just took away the game we
- 34:43Speaker 3: talked about yesterday against A & M where they're up
- 34:45Speaker 3: 28 or whatever at half, and then the Mississippi State
- 34:49Speaker 3: and Kentucky, I mean, they're sitting at 4-1 this year.
- 34:51Speaker 3: And then last year, 5-7 with that win over A &
- 34:54Speaker 3: M would look a lot different than 4-8. We might
- 34:57Speaker 3: not even be talking about this.
- 34:58Speaker 2: So that's South Carolina's financial situation. Panic meter from Brad
- 35:03Speaker 2: Crawford at CBS Sports. I love Brad's work at CBS.
- 35:07Speaker 2: The panic meter, he has South Carolina on there. And
- 35:11Speaker 2: just if all these jobs open up, his panic meter,
- 35:15Speaker 2: if all these jobs open up, what a crazy market
- 35:18Speaker 2: it could be. I feel like we're going into an offseason.
- 35:23Speaker 3: In the SEC.
- 35:24Speaker 2: We're not going to have a lot of jobs open.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Just so many new coaches. in first year, and then
- 35:30Speaker 2: the other coaches are having some success.
- 35:32Speaker 3: I don't think we're going to have an open job
- 35:33Speaker 3: if that South Carolina is true. If those numbers are legitimate,
- 35:37Speaker 3: there's not going to be an opening.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Yeah, because you've got a first-year coach at Arkansas, and
- 35:40Speaker 2: that's the team at the bottom of the barrel right now.
- 35:43Speaker 3: And Levy's not going anywhere. If Levy had a disaster
- 35:46Speaker 3: this year, he could have been the one guy that
- 35:48Speaker 3: would have been fired, but that's not going to happen.
- 35:50Speaker 3: That whole Arkansas thing, before you get too far. I
- 35:51Speaker 3: guess Venables is.
- 35:54Speaker 3: The way he just did a contract extension, though. I know.
- 35:57Speaker 3: That's going to be.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Yeah, signed in August.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Oklahoma's in the panic meter. Arkansas's there. South Carolina. But
- 36:03Speaker 2: don't see any of those guys losing their job. Maryland
- 36:07Speaker 2: looks like it will open. I don't know how good
- 36:08Speaker 2: of a job that is. Colorado, you know, the buzz
- 36:14Speaker 2: airs out of the balloon with Deion Sanders. He doesn't
- 36:16Speaker 2: have a quarterback. It's hard to save the year when
- 36:18Speaker 2: you don't have a quarterback.
- 36:19Speaker 3: I don't know who could take that program over and
- 36:21Speaker 3: ever have more buzz outside of going 12-0. The Buff
- 36:24Speaker 3: is two years ago. The two jobs that you just mentioned,
- 36:28Speaker 3: Colorado and Maryland, we've never seen anybody have success at either, really,
- 36:32Speaker 3: to a high level consistently. Those are bad, powerful jobs.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Michigan and Penn State have their own issues right now.
- 36:40Speaker 2: That would be, if either one of them popped open, shocking.
- 36:44Speaker 2: It would be surprising. It would be one of those,
- 36:47Speaker 2: I think, Penn State won't pop open because of the contract.
- 36:51Speaker 2: The Michigan one could be With Kyle Winningham, the kind
- 36:55Speaker 2: of job that you could let a coach coach through
- 36:59Speaker 2: the playoffs, not even have your job open, and we
- 37:02Speaker 2: could finish the college football playoff of a coach getting
- 37:04Speaker 2: eliminated and then saying, oh, he is leaving X school
- 37:08Speaker 2: to become the new head coach at Michigan. Michigan and
- 37:10Speaker 2: Kyle Winningham. It's one of those where Winningham can do
- 37:12Speaker 2: all the offseason work, keep everything going, and then you
- 37:16Speaker 2: get to almost February 1, a team playing in the
- 37:20Speaker 2: national championship or semifinal or whatever, and then make a
- 37:23Speaker 2: coaching change if they have their forever coach out there.
- 37:26Speaker 2: They were willing to wait a little bit on Kalen
- 37:28Speaker 2: DeBoer last year. I remember that.
- 37:30Speaker 3: And that's how they ended up. I mean, until, give
- 37:34Speaker 3: me an example, because we had coaches that would always
- 37:37Speaker 3: be in the mix, and then finally people gave up
- 37:39Speaker 3: on that coach, like he's not going to leave. I mean,
- 37:42Speaker 3: there was obviously some buzz that maybe Kalen DeBoer wasn't
- 37:45Speaker 3: a great fit or he wasn't 100% happy, and that's
- 37:48Speaker 3: one of the reasons Michigan came calling. You know, if
- 37:51Speaker 3: DeBoer continues this, what looks to be maybe a special season,
- 37:55Speaker 3: and there are other suitors at the end of the year,
- 37:57Speaker 3: if he shuts it down this year, I think people
- 37:59Speaker 3: will probably leave him alone.
- 38:01Speaker 2: You would think so. You would think so. Especially if Michigan,
- 38:05Speaker 2: in this situation, is able to wait through any playoff run.
- 38:10Speaker 2: You would assume that if he turns them down, or USC,
- 38:14Speaker 2: if it popped open, if he turns them down, to
- 38:16Speaker 2: stay at Alabama, you would think, okay, the family's happy.
- 38:19Speaker 2: They like it in Tuscaloosa. Things are going good.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Because we've got general managers and we've got so many
- 38:23Speaker 3: people on the payroll now. Do you think there is
- 38:26Speaker 3: a Ray Donovan of sorts on a lot of these
- 38:28Speaker 3: payrolls like South Carolina that goes and literally just tries
- 38:31Speaker 3: to find dirt on Shane Beamer? That's right. It sounds crazy.
- 38:34Speaker 3: I said it a couple of years ago with Jimbo Fisher,
- 38:36Speaker 3: but I don't really believe if you're looking for with calls,
- 38:38Speaker 3: Sharon Moore had that affair going on for years and
- 38:41Speaker 3: they struggle a little bit. What happens? It comes out like,
- 38:44Speaker 3: almost all of us have skeletons in the closet. Now,
- 38:47Speaker 3: are they skeletons worthy of losing a $ 50 million contract?
- 38:50Speaker 3: I don't know, but would you think somebody like that
- 38:52Speaker 3: is on staff?
- 38:52Speaker 1: I think your fear in that would be you've got
- 38:55Speaker 1: to hire somebody. And if word of that ever got
- 38:58Speaker 1: out that, oh, you know, South Carolina's got a Ray Donovan,
- 39:02Speaker 1: What coach is going to take that situation, you know?
- 39:03Speaker 3: No, but I'm saying you don't ever let it be known. Oh, well. Yeah.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Those secrets are hard to keep, but maybe.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Beamer seems like one of those guys that's got no skeleton.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the one guy I was going to say
- 39:14Speaker 3: you probably couldn't. But you know the funny thing? A
- 39:16Speaker 3: lot of those guys that look like that, and I'm not–
- 39:18Speaker 3: Shane Beamer aside, I don't want to do a character
- 39:20Speaker 3: assassination on him, but I've known a lot of guys
- 39:23Speaker 3: that seem squeaky clean, and they got a lot of skeletons. Yeah.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Name names. No, no. I don't think anybody would know, dude.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Interesting, though, the panic meter from Brad Crawford there. He's
- 39:35Speaker 2: got USC on there. He's got Clemson on there. Don't
- 39:38Speaker 2: know if any of those jobs opened up, but we're
- 39:41Speaker 2: approaching the halfway mark, and you've got a handful of
- 39:44Speaker 2: pretty cool football programs on the panic meter.
- 39:46Speaker 3: How do you guys feel about the Clemson situation I
- 39:49Speaker 3: know we've talked about it a little bit before and
- 39:50Speaker 3: they're sitting there at three and two and you know
- 39:53Speaker 3: I mentioned the schedule I really think they could go
- 39:55Speaker 3: nine and three with the schedule that is remaining as
- 39:57Speaker 3: bad as they've looked it would be wins like they
- 40:00Speaker 3: got over North Carolina and Cal it would just be
- 40:02Speaker 3: yucky wins but if he goes nine and three you
- 40:04Speaker 3: know this fan base is still all over his ass
- 40:07Speaker 3: right now Do you think he ever taps out and
- 40:10Speaker 3: is like, I want to end on a good note?
- 40:13Speaker 1: I think it becomes just too toxic of a situation
- 40:16Speaker 1: for him. Personally, I don't think Nick Saban would have
- 40:20Speaker 1: left the year he left if they had been an
- 40:22Speaker 1: 8-4 team and not been in the playoffs.
- 40:25Speaker 2: He had a it was a good enough year for
- 40:28Speaker 2: him to walk away and say, okay, I went out
- 40:29Speaker 2: as an overtime loser in the semifinals.
- 40:32Speaker 3: So are you saying if it did end up being
- 40:34Speaker 3: a 9-3, like on paper you look back and you're like, oh, damn,
- 40:37Speaker 3: Dabo last year was 9-3.
- 40:38Speaker 1: That's an uptick when he left.
- 40:40Speaker 3: I mean, you don't realize how bad it looked. Yeah,
- 40:43Speaker 3: not at all, not at all.
- 40:44Speaker 2: All right, quick break here. This is the next round
- 40:47Speaker 2: presented by Hard Rock Bet on Sporting State. When we
- 40:49Speaker 2: come back, a lot of controversy about another primetime game
- 40:56Speaker 2: scheduled that isn't SEC-friendly. Is there a rift growing between
- 41:00Speaker 2: the SEC and its broadcast partner, ESPN-ABC, or is ESPN-ABC
- 41:05Speaker 2: protecting their backside? We'll talk about that next right here
- 41:09Speaker 2: on Sporting State. Back with you on the next round
- 41:12Speaker 2: presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sporting State as we
- 41:15Speaker 2: roll on here, LTD & B. We may end up
- 41:19Speaker 2: doing the upset alert today a little bit later on
- 41:21Speaker 2: in hour two or hold it to tomorrow. Brock Huard
- 41:23Speaker 2: scheduled to be with us in the final hour of
- 41:26Speaker 2: the next round show, which is around 12 Eastern, 11 Central.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Did I get that right? No, the other way around, right?
- 41:34Speaker 2: For Brock or from the start of the show? For Brock,
- 41:36Speaker 2: 1 Eastern, 12 Central. For Brock, coming up a little
- 41:39Speaker 2: bit later. Right now, the show being brought to you
- 41:42Speaker 2: by our friends at Clay Travis Law.

- 42:31Speaker 3: No case too big or too small.
- 42:32Speaker 2: You know, you announced the SEC TV schedule coming up
- 42:38Speaker 2: for the week seven. Week six, we got Georgia and
- 42:42Speaker 2: Alabama in there. Well, we've got another week of that
- 42:46Speaker 2: was announced yesterday in week seven where you have a
- 42:48Speaker 2: different type of game in prime time and not a
- 42:52Speaker 2: main SEC game where it's not on ABC. And I wonder,
- 42:57Speaker 2: I know it's not resonating well with fans. I wonder
- 43:00Speaker 2: how it's resonating with the SEC office and SEC institutions.
- 43:06Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 43:07Speaker 1: You know, Clay was tweeting about this yesterday and said
- 43:10Speaker 1: the entire SEC is upset at this. So, you know,
- 43:13Speaker 1: Clay will be with us Thursday afternoon. I'll try to
- 43:15Speaker 1: remember to bring this back up or one of us
- 43:17Speaker 1: can that, you know, is he hearing from SEC people
- 43:21Speaker 1: that they're pissed about this? The reason they did it
- 43:24Speaker 1: is they've got Notre Dame BYU and Notre Dame is
- 43:28Speaker 1: a very big national draw in the way you. maximize
- 43:31Speaker 1: that is not have a great game go against it
- 43:33Speaker 1: if you can control that yeah that's and they can
- 43:35Speaker 1: control that that was that was my point was you
- 43:37Speaker 1: you shuffled the SEC off of that window that's right
- 43:40Speaker 1: to give you Notre Dame and BYU on really uncontested
- 43:45Speaker 1: that's right so if you're going to have a big
- 43:47Speaker 1: national draw like Notre Dame it probably makes sense for
- 43:51Speaker 1: you to eliminate as much competition as possible Alabama Tennessee
- 43:54Speaker 1: would be competition I mean, all of a sudden now,
- 43:58Speaker 1: NBC gets Notre Dame all the time for home games.
- 44:01Speaker 1: They don't have any control in this. But if you're ABC,
- 44:04Speaker 1: you get to show Notre Dame. They showed them against
- 44:05Speaker 1: North Carolina. They'll show this one. That may be the
- 44:08Speaker 1: only two times they get them this year. I haven't
- 44:10Speaker 1: looked at the full schedule to look at that. But
- 44:12Speaker 1: they won't have them much.
- 44:13Speaker 3: I mean, how different do you think the numbers will be, Alabama-Tennessee,
- 44:17Speaker 3: Notre Dame-BYU?
- 44:18Speaker 1: It depends on how good the games are, number one.
- 44:20Speaker 1: But if those are good games, it wouldn't surprise me
- 44:22Speaker 1: if Alabama-Tennessee's got the bigger number.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Well, but look at.
- 44:26Speaker 2: what they're going up against.
- 44:27Speaker 3: See, that's the other part. There's three other, two other. Yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 2: They put Auburn, Georgia and they put, uh, somebody in
- 44:32Speaker 2: Ole Miss.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:34Speaker 2: All in that same window. So that's going to divide.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Now they don't care because it'll be on all their
- 44:39Speaker 2: platforms and to their advertisers. It's all one big number.
- 44:43Speaker 2: We had, you know, 15 million people watching our, our Europe,
- 44:46Speaker 2: your ads on our network.
- 44:47Speaker 1: And that's about the number that we're going to get
- 44:49Speaker 1: no matter what order they put these things in. Um,
- 44:53Speaker 1: But I guess you're saying that the SEC might be
- 44:56Speaker 1: pissed about this.
- 44:57Speaker 2: No, as an SEC fan, here's what bothers me. We've
- 45:03Speaker 2: made a deal with you guys, ABC, ESPN. We have
- 45:08Speaker 2: this great partnership. Most Saturdays, you trumpet SEC on ABC
- 45:15Speaker 2: all day.
- 45:16Speaker 3: That's right.
- 45:17Speaker 2: When you throw three SEC games out there. And we
- 45:20Speaker 2: sort of have gotten used to the biggest game of
- 45:23Speaker 2: the day In the SEC, being at 630, that sort
- 45:27Speaker 2: of has become the new reality. We get it this
- 45:29Speaker 2: week with number two Georgia at number six Alabama. You're
- 45:33Speaker 2: almost turning that 630 ABC slot into what CBS 230
- 45:37Speaker 2: was for all those years. We know if it's the
- 45:39Speaker 2: biggest game of the week, it's going to be there. Now,
- 45:42Speaker 2: all of a sudden, you're our broadcast partners, and you're
- 45:45Speaker 2: making the SEC feel a little less than by shuffling
- 45:49Speaker 2: everything into the day and replacing the SEC with with
- 45:53Speaker 2: Notre Dame, BYU, and primetime?
- 45:56Speaker 1: This is kind of an impossible question to answer because
- 46:00Speaker 1: of the way the TV deals work. If this weren't
- 46:01Speaker 1: Notre Dame, do you think this would be this big
- 46:03Speaker 1: a deal? Do you think it's a bigger deal because
- 46:04Speaker 1: it's Notre Dame?
- 46:05Speaker 3: Probably.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think last week, I think a
- 46:07Speaker 2: lot of fans were left. I mean, it was obvious
- 46:10Speaker 2: that they protected the number for Miami and Clemson. I
- 46:14Speaker 2: haven't seen the numbers yet.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I don't know if I agree with that, though, Jim,
- 46:18Speaker 1: because I think part of it was they had already
- 46:20Speaker 1: announced that Bama-Mississippi State, I think, if anything... they undervalued
- 46:25Speaker 1: what Mississippi State might be. Like, I think you thought
- 46:27Speaker 1: Bama was going to be undefeated going into that game.
- 46:29Speaker 1: You didn't know about Mississippi State.
- 46:32Speaker 3: I had no idea.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Who are the other 230 games that they could have
- 46:35Speaker 2: moved from 230 to primetime?
- 46:38Speaker 3: Are you talking about last week? I mean, Florida-Missouri.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Florida-Missouri could have been a primetime game.
- 46:43Speaker 3: So you had announced that as? They had announced that as?
- 46:46Speaker 2: Afternoon or evening.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Afternoon or evening. Yeah.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Do they always do that? Do they ever just announce
- 46:54Speaker 1: it preseason at 2.30? It's morning, and then it's afternoon
- 46:58Speaker 1: or evening. Sometimes it's just flex.
- 47:01Speaker 3: Which means we do whatever we want.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Which, by the way, right now I'd put them all
- 47:05Speaker 2: at flex from now on.
- 47:08Speaker 1: I would like flex, too. I actually would punt this
- 47:11Speaker 1: whole idea. It's a disaster.
- 47:14Speaker 3: I don't know where the outcry was for this. I
- 47:16Speaker 3: don't either.
- 47:17Speaker 2: It's a disaster.
- 47:18Speaker 3: I think the SEC....
- 47:20Speaker 1: Came up with this idea thinking that fans really wanted this.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I don't think fans love the six-day hold. I think
- 47:27Speaker 1: if you could get around the six-day hold, that sucks.
- 47:31Speaker 1: But other than that, I don't think fans need to
- 47:33Speaker 1: know in the preseason my game's going to be in
- 47:35Speaker 1: the morning. I personally, maybe once or twice, man, I
- 47:39Speaker 1: am not going to that game because of this kick time.
- 47:42Speaker 2: The fact of the matter is that There obviously were
- 47:46Speaker 2: some fans that would complain that I don't know until
- 47:49Speaker 2: Sunday whether or not I've got to get a hotel
- 47:51Speaker 2: room in Tuscaloosa or Auburn.
- 47:53Speaker 1: That was incredibly rare. CBS would use the six-day hold
- 47:56Speaker 1: maybe two or three times a year. And see, ESPN
- 48:01Speaker 1: wouldn't have to use it because it's going to be
- 48:03Speaker 1: on their network. I don't think you need to pigeonhole
- 48:07Speaker 1: yourself into these start times.
- 48:08Speaker 3: I don't either. I don't either.
- 48:10Speaker 2: All flexibility that you could possibly have helps you in
- 48:13Speaker 2: this situation. All the games are on the same network.
- 48:15Speaker 2: And listen, I know what ABC and ESPN is doing.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Notre Dame is a big draw. But at some point,
- 48:20Speaker 2: you've got to be true to your partner, too, that
- 48:23Speaker 2: the SEC is.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Well, they're business partners. Yeah.
- 48:26Speaker 1: I mean, we're all in this together. You're not a
- 48:27Speaker 1: business partner with Notre Dame.
- 48:29Speaker 2: So, I mean, Notre Dame on ESPN would draw a
- 48:31Speaker 2: pretty good number. Notre Dame, BYU on ESPN, do that. Or, hey,
- 48:35Speaker 2: do it at 2.30 on ESPN. That prime time slot
- 48:41Speaker 2: on ABC has become hollowed ground for SEC fans. And
- 48:49Speaker 2: it feels like for a couple opportunities here, ABC and
- 48:53Speaker 2: ESPN used their relationship here to flex their muscle and
- 48:57Speaker 2: shuffle the SEC schedule into almost a lesser setting. And
- 49:02Speaker 2: That doesn't sit well with folks down south.
- 49:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's, I mean, you literally can, the SEC
- 49:07Speaker 3: has so many freaking good games. I know. I mean,
- 49:09Speaker 3: you really can get an 11-2-30 and 6-30 every week.
- 49:12Speaker 3: So do it. Stick with it.
- 49:15Speaker 1: As good as the SEC is this year, if you
- 49:17Speaker 1: had not pigeonholed yourself into start times and you, just
- 49:20Speaker 1: said each week you know maybe two weeks in advance
- 49:22Speaker 1: we're going to set these times sec on abc would
- 49:25Speaker 1: have been incredible every single week because there are at
- 49:27Speaker 1: least three good games every week in the sec i
- 49:29Speaker 1: don't know what auburn georgia will be next week but
- 49:31Speaker 1: that's the deep south's oldest rivalry and the fact is
- 49:35Speaker 1: it's playing up against the third saturday october alabama tennessee
- 49:38Speaker 1: and Maybe the better game, Ole Miss-Missouri competitive-wise, and all
- 49:44Speaker 1: three of those at the same window, that's almost malpractice
- 49:48Speaker 1: to have all of them going on at the same time.
- 49:50Speaker 1: KS Redmill says, when times are announced, people complain. I've
- 49:54Speaker 1: never heard anyone say they don't have enough time to
- 49:56Speaker 1: plan to go.
- 49:56Speaker 3: I don't either.
- 49:57Speaker 1: There were complaints about the CBS six-day hold. Because they
- 50:02Speaker 1: did not have to announce until Sunday whether they were
- 50:04Speaker 1: taking your game or not. So your game might be 2.30,
- 50:06Speaker 1: it might be 11, it might be 6.30. You didn't
- 50:09Speaker 1: know because CBS... But you don't have to do that anymore.
- 50:12Speaker 1: CBS was having to do that because that was the
- 50:15Speaker 1: only game on their network. All these games are on
- 50:17Speaker 1: ABC Disney. So I don't even think the six-day hold
- 50:20Speaker 1: will come into play. If I know two weeks in advance,
- 50:23Speaker 1: like if I'm a Bama fan and I want to
- 50:26Speaker 1: go to Tennessee... It's really, that's not even, if you're
- 50:29Speaker 1: doing that, you're doing that either way. If I'm a
- 50:32Speaker 1: Tennessee fan and I want to go to that Bama game,
- 50:34Speaker 1: but there's a 6 p.m. wedding, if I know two
- 50:38Speaker 1: weeks in advance, that's enough. I'm either going to the
- 50:39Speaker 1: wedding or I'm not. I mean, if it's optional, if
- 50:42Speaker 1: that game gets moved into 6 o'clock, I'm optioning not
- 50:45Speaker 1: to go to the wedding. If it's your daughter getting married,
- 50:48Speaker 1: you're going to the wedding either way. You've raised, you've
- 50:51Speaker 1: done something wrong in your family if your daughter's getting
- 50:53Speaker 1: married at 6 o'clock on a football Saturday, but that's
- 50:55Speaker 1: beside the point.
- 50:56Speaker 2: All right, that's one hour. When we come back, we
- 50:59Speaker 2: are now up and running enough to do an upset alert. Forrester,
- 51:02Speaker 2: I'll let you make the call on that. Yes or no?
- 51:04Speaker 2: Upset alert tomorrow or today?
- 51:06Speaker 3: Let's do it.
- 51:07Speaker 2: All right, so the next segment we'll do upset alert.
- 51:09Speaker 3: We're back.
- 51:10Speaker 2: In the back room, mics work too. In the next segment,
- 51:13Speaker 2: we will do upset alert and jump into some other
- 51:16Speaker 2: things going on in college football. All of this on
- 51:19Speaker 2: the next round presented by Hard Rock Bet here on
- 51:22Speaker 2: Sporting State.
