- 0:36Speaker 1: if he could meet anybody in history, he would choose
- 0:39Speaker 1: Leonardo da Vinci. I think you'll enjoy our conversation. The
- 0:45Speaker 1: Bengals Booth podcast is presented by Ultimate Bengals, the free

- 1:02Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcasts. It's the greatest thing since
- 1:07Speaker 1: the Zoji rushi rice cooker. If you're looking for a
- 1:12Speaker 1: cheap rice cooker, the Zoji Rushy brand is not for you.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But if you're willing to pay extra for the mac
- 1:18Speaker 1: Daddy of rice cookers, then the Zoji Rushy can't be beat.
- 1:23Speaker 1: The rice is fluffy and perfect every time, never sticks
- 1:27Speaker 1: to the pan, and there are even different settings for white, brown, Jasmine,
- 1:32Speaker 1: bass Modi, etc. Plus it looks cool in your kitchen.
- 1:37Speaker 1: The number one overall pick in the rice cooker draft
- 1:41Speaker 1: is definitely the Zoji Rushi. Now let's get to Sunday's game.
- 1:47Speaker 1: It sure started well. The Bengals got the ball first
- 1:50Speaker 1: and zipped right down the field, picking up five first
- 1:54Speaker 1: downs before facing third and goal from the Cleveland three.
- 1:58Speaker 1: That's when Joe Burrow made a rare terrible throw. Joe
- 2:02Speaker 1: extends the hands, fakes a hand off to p Ryan
- 2:04Speaker 1: throws intercepted sprinting up the near sideline and heading toward
- 2:10Speaker 1: the middle of the field. Now with the football, it
- 2:12Speaker 1: is Denzel Ward taking at the distance for a Cleveland touchdown. Wow.
- 2:18Speaker 1: The Bengals not only failed to score inside the red zone,
- 2:22Speaker 1: Joe Burrow's former Ohio State teammate, Denzel Ward, stepped in
- 2:26Speaker 1: front of Jamar Chase at the one yard line and
- 2:29Speaker 1: took it back ninety nine yards for a touchdown. Burrow
- 2:33Speaker 1: didn't have much to say about wards pick six. You
- 2:37Speaker 1: had a good play. I left it inside a little bit,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and if you do that to Denzel, he's gonna make
- 2:41Speaker 1: it pay. If if I play better, we're in that game.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We a chance to win that game. Instant play, Well,
- 2:47Speaker 1: that's all there is to it. Burrow had his good
- 2:49Speaker 1: moments too. In fact, after the pick six, he drove
- 2:52Speaker 1: the Bengals seventy five yards on nine plays to tie
- 2:55Speaker 1: the game. Toss sweep to the left, mix it looking
- 2:58Speaker 1: for a running lane. Great Books get to the sidelines,
- 3:01Speaker 1: touchdown Bengals as Mixon takes it eleven yards into the
- 3:06Speaker 1: end zone for the Bengal score. That made it seven seven,
- 3:10Speaker 1: And at that point, the Bengals had run twenty plays
- 3:12Speaker 1: for one hundred forty one yards before Baker Mayfield had
- 3:16Speaker 1: even touched the ball. But when the Browns finally took
- 3:19Speaker 1: the field out offense, the Bengals couldn't stop them. Mayfield
- 3:23Speaker 1: hands it off to Chubb, trying to knife his way in.
- 3:27Speaker 1: No signal yet. The officials charge up the sideline and
- 3:31Speaker 1: now on the far side of the field, there's a touchdown. Signal.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Nick Chubb's two yard run gave Cleveland a fourteen seven lead,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and that lead grew The next time Cleveland got the ball,
- 3:43Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield under center Nick chubbs seven yards behind. Chubb
- 3:47Speaker 1: stands straight up and down, no hands on knees. May
- 3:50Speaker 1: Field fakes to him. Baker flings it deep down FA
- 3:54Speaker 1: He's got a receiver wide open. Taught at the fifteen
- 3:57Speaker 1: and streaking into the end zone is Donovan People's Jones
- 4:01Speaker 1: for a sixty yard touchdown b d Apple and beat
- 4:06Speaker 1: him badly. The Browns got rid of O b J
- 4:09Speaker 1: on Friday, but DPJ Donovan People's Jones gave Cleveland a
- 4:14Speaker 1: twenty one seven lead. Both meetings between these two teams
- 4:18Speaker 1: last year were shootouts, but this time the Bengals kept
- 4:21Speaker 1: shooting themselves in the foot burrow against a four man rush.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Quick throw caught by Chap Paul's knocked out. Cleveland scoops
- 4:29Speaker 1: it up, running it back to the thirty and take
- 4:32Speaker 1: it out of bounds at the thirty yard line. John
- 4:35Speaker 1: Johnson knocked it out of there. Dan john Johnson put
- 4:38Speaker 1: his hat in his shoulder patch right on the football.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That's just a deadly tackle, right there. You gotta protect
- 4:44Speaker 1: the ball that led to a field goal to give
- 4:47Speaker 1: the Browns at twenty four to seven lead. And if
- 4:50Speaker 1: you go back to last week's game in New York
- 4:52Speaker 1: and toss out the Jets final drive when they ran
- 4:54Speaker 1: out the clock, it marked the eighth straight drive where
- 4:58Speaker 1: the opponents scored on Bengals defense. A Nevin McPherson field
- 5:02Speaker 1: goal at the end of the half made it twenty
- 5:04Speaker 1: four to ten Cleveland. Here's Joe Mixon. We just gotta
- 5:08Speaker 1: come out faster, man, come out faster, Gotta play with
- 5:11Speaker 1: more intensity, just gotta play Bengals football. And you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: these last two games, we ain't been able to do that.
- 5:18Speaker 1: It's a lot of frustration, but at the same time,
- 5:20Speaker 1: we gotta keep everybody together. You gotta keep learning, keep building,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and uh we gotta prepare better, you know, as players
- 5:28Speaker 1: take it upon ourselves and just gotta do better. The
- 5:31Speaker 1: Bengals defense finally forced a punt on the Brown's first
- 5:35Speaker 1: drive of the third quarter, but the offense wasn't able
- 5:38Speaker 1: to capitalize. Burrow fakes a handball, He's in trouble. Miles
- 5:42Speaker 1: Garrett blew right around Jonah Williams and sacks Joe Burrow
- 5:46Speaker 1: back at the twenty four yard line. Oh Mirles Garrett
- 5:49Speaker 1: was setting setting it up, and Miles Garrett was, He's
- 5:52Speaker 1: laying in the weeds and then all of a sudden,
- 5:54Speaker 1: you can block him for twenty twenty five plays and
- 5:58Speaker 1: then all of a sudden he comes off the edge
- 6:00Speaker 1: art on one play. He's got a myriad of moves,
- 6:02Speaker 1: There's no question about it. He's got explosiveness, he's got
- 6:06Speaker 1: a burst, He's got great hands. Here's one hell of
- 6:08Speaker 1: a football player. Garrett had one and a half sacks
- 6:11Speaker 1: to increase his league leading total to twelve. The Browns
- 6:14Speaker 1: had five sacks overall and hit Joe Burrow twelve times.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Here again is mixing me as a running back. You know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: I hate to see Burrow get hit in the limas
- 6:24Speaker 1: I hit it too, you know, also as well as
- 6:27Speaker 1: the tight ends. But we gotta take it up on ourselves,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you know, and you know, keep Burrow clean. We gotta
- 6:33Speaker 1: keep him untouched. At that point, the Bengals were still
- 6:36Speaker 1: within fourteen points. They knew the Browns would try to
- 6:40Speaker 1: run the ball, but knowing it and stopping it are
- 6:43Speaker 1: two very different things. Mayfield under center chub lines up
- 6:48Speaker 1: seven yards behind tight end. Hooper motions from right to left.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Mayfield has the ball, hands it off to Chubb, gets
- 6:55Speaker 1: away from an ankle tackle and look at him go
- 6:57Speaker 1: see off to the races down the middle of the
- 7:00Speaker 1: field of the twenty the ten touchdown, seventy yards Nick
- 7:05Speaker 1: Chubb to the house. Wow, I'm telling you, Nick Chubb
- 7:10Speaker 1: can run you over and run away from you. This
- 7:13Speaker 1: guy has got power and he's got speed. Chubb finished
- 7:17Speaker 1: with one hundred thirty seven yards and only fourteen carries
- 7:20Speaker 1: in six career games against the Bengals. He's topped one
- 7:23Speaker 1: hundred yards in four of them. Here's Zach Taylor. We've
- 7:27Speaker 1: got to be better there when you're facing the team. Listen,
- 7:29Speaker 1: number one rushing team in the NFL. That's kind of
- 7:32Speaker 1: been their bread and butter, you know. And Chubb's a
- 7:34Speaker 1: fantastic running back. They've got a really good offensive line
- 7:37Speaker 1: and a good tight end group that blocks for him.
- 7:39Speaker 1: We knew we had our work cut out for us,
- 7:41Speaker 1: because that's what they've shown each each game that they've
- 7:42Speaker 1: played really over the last two years. So one of
- 7:45Speaker 1: the things you gotta do is is you gotta be
- 7:48Speaker 1: where you're supposed to be and you gotta be able
- 7:49Speaker 1: to put the back on the ground and we get
- 7:50Speaker 1: the opportunities. I did see a couple of times when
- 7:52Speaker 1: we had some opportunities, we missed those tackles. Another Borough
- 7:55Speaker 1: interception led to a field goal that made it thirty
- 7:58Speaker 1: four ten going to the fourth quarter. Joe Mixon scored
- 8:02Speaker 1: on a two yard run to make it thirty four
- 8:03Speaker 1: to sixteen, and Joe finished with one hundred ten combined
- 8:07Speaker 1: rushing and receiving yards, but that didn't mean much. An
- 8:10Speaker 1: eighteen yard touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield to David Najoku
- 8:14Speaker 1: made the final score forty one sixteen, almost identical to
- 8:19Speaker 1: the bengals forty one to seventeen win in Baltimore two
- 8:23Speaker 1: weeks ago. Here are Sam Hubbard and c j Uzama.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I think it just got out of hand, you know, turnovers,
- 8:32Speaker 1: got to take care of the ball, big plays, mistakes,
- 8:36Speaker 1: you know, just it's the NFL. It's a tough division.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You know. You see what happens when you let things
- 8:40Speaker 1: get out of hand. We're kind of on the other
- 8:42Speaker 1: side of it. Early in the season. Happened to us,
- 8:44Speaker 1: so we got to take it and learn from it.
- 8:46Speaker 1: We're pissed. Obviously, we just lost in a bad way
- 8:50Speaker 1: in front of our home crowd. But there's the stress level,
- 8:53Speaker 1: in the panic level, there's there's none, all right. We
- 8:56Speaker 1: know we have we know what we can still achieve,
- 8:58Speaker 1: and we just have to go out there and do it.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Two weeks ago, the Bengals were the number one playoff
- 9:02Speaker 1: seed in the AFC. Now they're a game and a
- 9:04Speaker 1: half behind the first place Ravens in the AFC North
- 9:07Speaker 1: and could fall a half game behind the Steelers if
- 9:10Speaker 1: Pittsburgh beats the Bears at Hinz Field on Monday night.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's obviously not what they were hoping for going into
- 9:17Speaker 1: their bye week, but they are five and four and
- 9:20Speaker 1: five of their last eight are at home. Here are
- 9:23Speaker 1: Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor. Still got everything in front
- 9:26Speaker 1: of us. There's no panicking. We've lost two in a row,
- 9:29Speaker 1: so what now. We've got eight games left and still
- 9:35Speaker 1: a chance to win the division and make the playoffs.
- 9:37Speaker 1: So that's our folks going forward. I think that people
- 9:40Speaker 1: were going to try to paint a picture of overreaction
- 9:42Speaker 1: when you lose two games in a row. We're not.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You know, we're going to correct those things. That we
- 9:46Speaker 1: need to correct and use this bye week to get
- 9:49Speaker 1: our bodies back and make sure we're healthy going in
- 9:51Speaker 1: the back half of the season. But this isn't unusual
- 9:55Speaker 1: for teams to lose two games in a row in
- 9:56Speaker 1: this league. You know, it feels awful, trust me to
- 10:01Speaker 1: sit here after two consecutive losses, But I think it's
- 10:03Speaker 1: important that we're consistent with our approach throughout. We know
- 10:07Speaker 1: we've done some good things over this first nine games
- 10:09Speaker 1: the season, and so we'll make those corrections that we
- 10:12Speaker 1: need to make so that we're focused and can come
- 10:14Speaker 1: out strong after the buy. The first game after the
- 10:16Speaker 1: buy is on the road in Las Vegas. The Raiders
- 10:19Speaker 1: are five and three after losing to the Giants on Sunday.
- 10:23Speaker 1: They have a home game on Sunday Night Football next
- 10:26Speaker 1: week against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bengals Booth podcast
- 10:30Speaker 1: is presented by Ultimate Bengals, the free to play fantasy
- 10:33Speaker 1: football game. Ultimate Bengals will be awarding a weekly winner
- 10:36Speaker 1: during the course of the season, with tickets, autograph merchandise,
- 10:40Speaker 1: and money can buy experiences all up for grabs. Find
- 10:44Speaker 1: Ultimate Bengals in the app stores now. Now time for
- 10:48Speaker 1: postgame analysis with Dave Lapham. All Right, lap, I guess
- 10:52Speaker 1: my first question after forty one to sixteen loss would be,
- 10:56Speaker 1: what's happened to the Bengals defense so good through seven
- 10:59Speaker 1: games and really struggling over the last two. Yeah, that
- 11:03Speaker 1: that's a tough one to tough one to figure out
- 11:06Speaker 1: because I don't know, I don't if they cracked the code.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I wonder what the code was. You know, it's like man,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and it looked like, you know, teams did it a
- 11:15Speaker 1: little bit differently. It looked like the Jets just attacked,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, the perimeter in the in the short areas
- 11:22Speaker 1: of the football field by throwing the football. I mean
- 11:25Speaker 1: the Cleveland Browns did what they do, They ran it,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and uh, you know, Baker Mayfield just played off of
- 11:31Speaker 1: that and only threw it twenty one times. You completed
- 11:33Speaker 1: fourteen of them. For tune in eighteen yards when I
- 11:36Speaker 1: mean Chubb almost has ten yards of rush, fourteen carries,
- 11:38Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty seven yards, two touchdowns. Seventy yard
- 11:42Speaker 1: touchdown run will do that for you, There's no doubt
- 11:44Speaker 1: about it. I Mean, like we said, Dan, the seventy
- 11:48Speaker 1: yard touchdown run, people's jones sixty yard touchdown catch. They
- 11:52Speaker 1: had four other plays, five other plays of over twenty
- 11:56Speaker 1: one yards, and you know they only ran for the
- 12:00Speaker 1: for the entire football game. The only we're in forty
- 12:01Speaker 1: six plays had two hundred sixty one three hundred and
- 12:04Speaker 1: sixty one yards on forty six snaps. It it was
- 12:09Speaker 1: a dismantling There's there's no doubt about it. But I
- 12:13Speaker 1: don't know, I don't know what it is that the
- 12:16Speaker 1: teams have figured out here. But you mentioned a couple
- 12:19Speaker 1: times during the course of the game where eight straight
- 12:21Speaker 1: drives between the Jets and the and the Cleveland Browns
- 12:25Speaker 1: that they they score I mean eight straight before a
- 12:28Speaker 1: punt stopped that streak or was it ten drives before
- 12:31Speaker 1: a punt stopped the streak? Well, the overall stat is
- 12:35Speaker 1: in a ten drive span, not including the end of
- 12:38Speaker 1: the Jets game where they just ran out of the clock.
- 12:41Speaker 1: In a ten drive span between the two games, the
- 12:44Speaker 1: Bengals defense forced one punt, gave up nine scores. Wow,
- 12:49Speaker 1: that's um. That's problematic to say the least, and it
- 12:56Speaker 1: changes the whole complexion of the buye. I mean, they've
- 12:59Speaker 1: got a going to take apart what they've done and
- 13:01Speaker 1: put it back together again. They have to have to
- 13:03Speaker 1: figure out they got some work ahead of them. Um,
- 13:06Speaker 1: going into the bye with two straight losses and one
- 13:09Speaker 1: of them a division loss by by quite a margin.
- 13:13Speaker 1: That that that's that's concerning to say the least. We
- 13:16Speaker 1: set it on the pregame show going into the game
- 13:18Speaker 1: with a buy ahead. You're either six and three with
- 13:21Speaker 1: a three and oz record in the division where you
- 13:24Speaker 1: can kick back, relax, go on vacation, whatever you want
- 13:26Speaker 1: to do during the bye, or you're five and four,
- 13:29Speaker 1: you've lost two straight games where you were favored to win,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and you might have a hard time sleeping for the
- 13:34Speaker 1: next week. Yeah, I mean there's there's a I think
- 13:38Speaker 1: I think a lot of sports psychologists are going to
- 13:40Speaker 1: make money during the bye week as as players and
- 13:42Speaker 1: coaches visit these uh these guys it Um, you know.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I think what you have to do, though, is maybe
- 13:49Speaker 1: go back and really break tape down during the successful run,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and break tape down during the run where they've had
- 13:57Speaker 1: some struggles, and really put a fine tooth comb to
- 14:02Speaker 1: what people are doing differently and what you might need
- 14:05Speaker 1: to do. Sometimes the adjustments aren't as as apparent and
- 14:10Speaker 1: as easy as as uh as you might think. I guess,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and they need to need to just look over, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 1: over all of it and evaluate it and be really
- 14:19Speaker 1: truthful and honest and and maybe make some decisions on
- 14:22Speaker 1: how they divide playing time amongst some players. They may
- 14:24Speaker 1: determine that you know what, this hasn't been just for
- 14:28Speaker 1: a series. This has been for two games in a
- 14:30Speaker 1: row now that I haven't gotten the production and I
- 14:32Speaker 1: need at this position or that position, or you can't
- 14:35Speaker 1: make wholesale personnel changes. Um, and you don't want to
- 14:38Speaker 1: do anything. Um you know, a knee jerk reaction type thing.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But man, you I think you just have to study
- 14:47Speaker 1: it from A to Z and uh and make as
- 14:51Speaker 1: many adjustments and changes and make as many tough decisions
- 14:56Speaker 1: as you possibly need to make. I love Joe Burrow.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You love Joe Burrow. The fan base loves Joe Burrow.
- 15:03Speaker 1: There's no quarterback I would rather have going forward than
- 15:06Speaker 1: Joe Burrow. And he's not perfect. Nobody is. But that
- 15:08Speaker 1: first interception, you can't make that throw. It's third down
- 15:13Speaker 1: and goal from the three. I don't know what he
- 15:15Speaker 1: saw because Denzel Ward was right there. I don't know
- 15:20Speaker 1: how he didn't see him unless you know, you look
- 15:22Speaker 1: at the angle with a pass rush that you don't
- 15:25Speaker 1: know if he was blocked out. I mean, the only
- 15:28Speaker 1: thing I can figure is that he just didn't see
- 15:30Speaker 1: him the way it was apparent that he should have
- 15:33Speaker 1: been seen. Because yeah, that that one, it's not like
- 15:36Speaker 1: he even had to really break on it. He just
- 15:38Speaker 1: kind of just had to catch it and run. So
- 15:41Speaker 1: that that one was a was a backbreaker for sure.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And that's a fourteen point swing, you know, it's it's
- 15:50Speaker 1: but the fact is you come right back and you
- 15:54Speaker 1: score a touchdown, go right down the field again and
- 15:56Speaker 1: score a touchdown, and you know you run twenty snaps
- 15:59Speaker 1: and puts seven points on the board. Fourteen really seven
- 16:02Speaker 1: for them and seven for you. Before they even take
- 16:05Speaker 1: the field offensively. Boy, once they once the Cleveland brownse
- 16:09Speaker 1: took the field offensively, though, they couldn't wait to show
- 16:12Speaker 1: you what they had. You know, they had a good
- 16:14Speaker 1: game plan and they were anxious to let it unfold.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Tough day for Jamar Chase. Costly fumble a couple of
- 16:22Speaker 1: deep balls, poluting one in the end zone that should
- 16:24Speaker 1: have been caught. Another deep ball that could have been
- 16:27Speaker 1: caught It would have been a great catch if he
- 16:28Speaker 1: had held on. But unfortunately, as brilliant as he's been
- 16:32Speaker 1: to this point of his rookie year, this was not
- 16:34Speaker 1: a great day for him. Yeah, he's been streaky, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: you look at he had a bad streak at training camp.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Then he put together a good streak of a few games.
- 16:42Speaker 1: But he dropped a touchdown pass against the Jets as well,
- 16:44Speaker 1: right in the end zone him right in the chest.
- 16:46Speaker 1: He let it get in his shoulder pads and bounced
- 16:48Speaker 1: off his chest. He dropped, you know, a couple of
- 16:50Speaker 1: balls today and you know, other another throw that would
- 16:53Speaker 1: have been a great catch, there's no question. But in
- 16:56Speaker 1: this league, when you get two hands on the football,
- 16:58Speaker 1: you know, most receivers are going to say, actually catch
- 17:00Speaker 1: that football. So, yeah, he's he's in a streak that's
- 17:05Speaker 1: that's not very good. Again, maybe the bye week is
- 17:07Speaker 1: coming at a very opportune time for him. Maybe it's
- 17:10Speaker 1: coming at an opportune time for a few guys. That
- 17:13Speaker 1: The one thing though, Dan is they've been remarkably healthy,
- 17:17Speaker 1: you know, and uh and the bye week they should
- 17:19Speaker 1: even get more healthy. So when they come back after
- 17:23Speaker 1: the bye week, it's not like they're waiting for guys
- 17:25Speaker 1: to rehab and key components to come back to the
- 17:29Speaker 1: to the football team. And I guess you can look
- 17:31Speaker 1: at it two ways. You can look at it and say, oh,
- 17:33Speaker 1: they're healthy, and they still have had a tough two
- 17:36Speaker 1: game stretch. You know, if if, if, if injuries could
- 17:39Speaker 1: explain it, that'd be an easy in explanation. But that's
- 17:41Speaker 1: not the case. But they they have time to lick
- 17:45Speaker 1: their wounds. They're not physical, they're mental. And uh, you know,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'll guarantee you the coaches are going to be burning
- 17:52Speaker 1: some midnight oil here in the early stages of the
- 17:54Speaker 1: bye week. I mean, they're gonna take some time with
- 17:56Speaker 1: their families. They deserve it. Um Zach said you on
- 18:00Speaker 1: the postgame show that players are given him everything they
- 18:03Speaker 1: have and he has no issues, no questions, no problems
- 18:06Speaker 1: with that the effort that they've given. And I agree.
- 18:12Speaker 1: When I look at the tape, I don't see guys
- 18:15Speaker 1: not playing hard. I see guys not executing proper technique.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I see guys, you know, making mental errors. I see mistakes.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I see guys not playing smart enough. But I don't
- 18:25Speaker 1: it's not a case of guys you know, just putting
- 18:28Speaker 1: it in cruise control and not playing hard. They are
- 18:31Speaker 1: playing hard. We know the Browns are a talented team.
- 18:33Speaker 1: They played today like the team they're supposed to be.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Unfortunately the Bengals did not get them on a bad day.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Let's talk about a cheam Identagy. I know he spoke
- 18:42Speaker 1: to him after the game. What did you make of
- 18:44Speaker 1: the fact that he started in place of Jackson Carman
- 18:47Speaker 1: at right guard? And how do you think he did?
- 18:49Speaker 1: I thought he acquitted himself pretty darn well. Now he's
- 18:53Speaker 1: his own toughest critic. So he said, there are you know,
- 18:56Speaker 1: there are a few plays, and there always are. You know,
- 18:59Speaker 1: in a seventy play sequence of a football game, you're
- 19:02Speaker 1: not gonna have seventy perfect plays. But I bet you
- 19:05Speaker 1: he had sixty five that are probably, you know, more
- 19:09Speaker 1: than passable. And I think what it boiled down to
- 19:12Speaker 1: was they were excited about him before he get hurt,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and then when he came back, his feet are so
- 19:18Speaker 1: good and his balance is so good, and he has
- 19:21Speaker 1: he has really athletic system and strength. So you think, man,
- 19:26Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta use this guy somewhere. And he
- 19:28Speaker 1: hadn't played right guard he's in a long time, and
- 19:31Speaker 1: they threw him in there. I thought, maybe, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 1: the two weeks of practice that he came back, Frank
- 19:38Speaker 1: Pollock's like, I gotta play this guy. I mean, he
- 19:40Speaker 1: must have just made the decision. This guys shown me
- 19:42Speaker 1: too much physically. I got to see what he can
- 19:45Speaker 1: do in a game, because he leap frog everybody. You know,
- 19:49Speaker 1: he leap frog carm and he leap frog Hill. You know,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna put him a right guard. And I thought
- 19:55Speaker 1: he might rotate maybe you know, not every series rotate,
- 19:58Speaker 1: but maybe get a blow here and there. He played
- 20:03Speaker 1: twenty quick plays and played seventy plays, uh, you know,
- 20:06Speaker 1: in a football game where he had not played a
- 20:09Speaker 1: physical battle like that in quite a while. So that
- 20:12Speaker 1: that's a pretty good tribute to him. And um, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 1: it shows the kind of confidence that his teammates and
- 20:19Speaker 1: his line coach and everybody has in him. And he
- 20:21Speaker 1: couldn't have been more effusive in his praise of you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: the veteran guys around him, the Riley Reeese and you
- 20:28Speaker 1: know Trey Hawkins, you know, helping him, and and that
- 20:32Speaker 1: that that is I mean, it was the same way
- 20:34Speaker 1: for Jackson Carmen and Trey Hill, anybody in there. So
- 20:39Speaker 1: having having those bookend veteran guys is so helpful there.
- 20:43Speaker 1: The loss to Cleveland makes the loss to the Jets
- 20:46Speaker 1: hurt that much more up by eleven midway through the
- 20:49Speaker 1: fourth quarter, if they just hold on and win that game, Yeah,
- 20:52Speaker 1: a twenty five point loss at home to the Browns
- 20:54Speaker 1: would have stung, but at least big picture, he still
- 20:57Speaker 1: would have felt great. Now that Jets game, you really
- 21:01Speaker 1: kick yourself for letting that one get away. Yeah, it's like,
- 21:04Speaker 1: all right, up eleven, seven minutes to go up five,
- 21:08Speaker 1: you know, three minutes and forty seconds or whatever, and
- 21:11Speaker 1: you can't finish. UM. So now you combine not being
- 21:17Speaker 1: able to finish against the team that you should have beaten, UM,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and you follow it up with a division loss. The
- 21:24Speaker 1: magnitude of this one, it's a it's a double whammy.
- 21:26Speaker 1: It's a second kick in the butt. So you don't
- 21:29Speaker 1: have much time to recover from the first one. You
- 21:32Speaker 1: take that second one. So you know, maybe I know it,
- 21:36Speaker 1: I know it's uh, it's tough to go into a
- 21:38Speaker 1: bye with this type of down feeling, but maybe they
- 21:41Speaker 1: maybe they need to, Like I said, maybe they need
- 21:43Speaker 1: to just um rip, take some things out of what
- 21:46Speaker 1: they're doing and add some some additional things and work
- 21:50Speaker 1: on it during the bye week. And you have two
- 21:51Speaker 1: weeks to for the next opponent, um and you just
- 21:54Speaker 1: you know, get ready and fine tune yourself for the
- 21:58Speaker 1: second half of the season. You really don't have any choice,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you know, I don't think you continue along the same
- 22:05Speaker 1: lines that you've played the last couple of games. It
- 22:07Speaker 1: hasn't worked. So it does give you time to go
- 22:10Speaker 1: back to the football lab and take out some other
- 22:13Speaker 1: you know, primary elements and raw materials and formulate something
- 22:17Speaker 1: and put it together for the second half of the season.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Then the players can rest and uh, you know, rest
- 22:23Speaker 1: their minds and bodies and get ready to give maximum
- 22:26Speaker 1: effort the second half of the season. No game next Sunday,
- 22:29Speaker 1: a trip to Vegas the following Sunday. Are you Dave
- 22:32Speaker 1: Lapham a Vegas guy? I've been there. I've been there
- 22:37Speaker 1: a couple of times. I'll play some blackjack, I've done that.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I'm really looking forward to seeing Allegian though. I mean
- 22:45Speaker 1: that edifice looks like it's mind boggling just to see
- 22:49Speaker 1: some of these these stadiums are just I mean, they're
- 22:52Speaker 1: just unbelievable pieces of architecture what they're doing now with
- 22:56Speaker 1: these stadiums, and I'm looking forward to seeing that. But yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I mean Vegas is you see, you see all kinds
- 23:04Speaker 1: of things in Vegas. There's no doubt. Sometimes you want
- 23:07Speaker 1: to forget some of the things you've seen in Vegas
- 23:09Speaker 1: or heard in Vegas or whatever. But yeah, I've been
- 23:12Speaker 1: there on a couple of occasions, and you know, sometimes
- 23:17Speaker 1: myself and some of the people I've been with have
- 23:19Speaker 1: done well and sometimes not too well at all. I'm
- 23:23Speaker 1: in the not well at all category when it comes
- 23:25Speaker 1: to my track record in Vegas. All Right, disappointing day
- 23:29Speaker 1: five and four, take the break, Move on five and four.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Still have a got your head above water in terms
- 23:36Speaker 1: of above five hundred and eight games to finish it
- 23:40Speaker 1: out and finish strong. If you go two and one
- 23:44Speaker 1: in the division the second half of the season, worst
- 23:46Speaker 1: case scenario like you did in the first half of
- 23:47Speaker 1: the season four and two, depending on how you handle
- 23:50Speaker 1: your other business, could put you in in pretty good shape.
- 23:53Speaker 1: You know, you're looking at you're looking at being able
- 23:56Speaker 1: to hang in there and all you want to do
- 23:59Speaker 1: is get in the tournament. You know you want to
- 24:01Speaker 1: get in the postseason tournament. That's what it's all about.
- 24:04Speaker 1: And then you never know because I mean, Jacksonville beats
- 24:08Speaker 1: Buffalo nine to six. Come on, I mean the National
- 24:11Speaker 1: Football League is just when you think you know you
- 24:14Speaker 1: have no clue, you have no clue. More on the
- 24:17Speaker 1: game and the season to date. Join Lap and Lance
- 24:20Speaker 1: McAlister for Bengals Line Monday night from six to nine seven.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Add WLW. Now time for this week's fun Facts segment,
- 24:28Speaker 1: where you get to know the person under the pads.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts with rookie Jackson Carmen, born
- 24:35Speaker 1: and raised in the Cincinnati area, now a rookie on
- 24:37Speaker 1: the offensive line. Let's start with your musical ability. What
- 24:42Speaker 1: instruments do you play and how did you learn to
- 24:44Speaker 1: play them? I played a lot of different instruments, my
- 24:47Speaker 1: best instruments being guitar, drums, piano, banjo, ukulele, basically any
- 24:53Speaker 1: percussive instrument. And I feel like if there's an instrument
- 24:56Speaker 1: I don't know, I can teach myself how to play it.
- 24:59Speaker 1: So if you want to press somebody by playing a
- 25:01Speaker 1: song on piano or guitar, whatever it might be. What's
- 25:05Speaker 1: your go to? Really? Uh? I love to improvise its
- 25:09Speaker 1: like freestyle, make stuff on my own. But I listened
- 25:12Speaker 1: to just about every genre of music, so I can
- 25:15Speaker 1: pull from just about any type of music people who
- 25:18Speaker 1: don't listen to so it's really up to the person listening.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I know your mom is a talented singer. Was that
- 25:24Speaker 1: talent passed down? It was? Do you want to give
- 25:27Speaker 1: us an example? Not right now, but I do. I
- 25:30Speaker 1: will have later some music being released, not anytime soon
- 25:36Speaker 1: during the season, but it was coming sentence. Let I'll
- 25:39Speaker 1: let that. I'll let it get worked on first. Why
- 25:43Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I wanted to be a
- 25:44Speaker 1: final product, fair enough, something for us to look forward to.
- 25:47Speaker 1: We're doing fun facts with Jackson Carmen. You're a big man.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Were you always the biggest kid in the neighborhood? Yes? Always.
- 25:55Speaker 1: I was born like nine plus pounds. It's been big
- 25:58Speaker 1: my whole entire life. Was allowed to run the football
- 26:01Speaker 1: and peewee, so I had to take the ball from
- 26:03Speaker 1: the running backs while I was played d line. But yeah,
- 26:06Speaker 1: I've been in big my whole life. In youth sports,
- 26:09Speaker 1: did the parents of the opposing team want to see
- 26:13Speaker 1: your person against every game. As a matter of fact,
- 26:15Speaker 1: that even when I first started playing football, I was
- 26:18Speaker 1: playing up as a third grader with the fifth and
- 26:20Speaker 1: sixth graders, and even their parents are asking for birth certificates.
- 26:23Speaker 1: It's a compliment, no way, it is. Most definitely we're
- 26:26Speaker 1: doing fun facts at Jackson Carmen. You started Fairfield High School.
- 26:30Speaker 1: You're one of the top twenty recruits in the country.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Did you enjoy the attention or was it a little
- 26:35Speaker 1: bit overwhelming? I could definitely say a bit of both,
- 26:39Speaker 1: especially like this being so young. But the most important
- 26:42Speaker 1: thing was like the whole experience was just like a
- 26:45Speaker 1: learning lesson for me, just like just growing in mature
- 26:48Speaker 1: as young man and being able to just like see
- 26:50Speaker 1: more of the world. And really, I feel like once
- 26:53Speaker 1: football started to pick up for me, so they like
- 26:55Speaker 1: kind of my curiosity just like to see the world
- 26:58Speaker 1: more and get out and experience things. So definitely football
- 27:01Speaker 1: provided that opportunity for me. He chose Clemson, hard to
- 27:05Speaker 1: argue with the decision. Played in a couple of national
- 27:07Speaker 1: championship games, won a championship as a freshman. What are
- 27:11Speaker 1: your most vivid memories of that first perfect season honestly,
- 27:16Speaker 1: just like how unrealistic it felt. And I remember thinking that,
- 27:18Speaker 1: like while I was on the team, like, man, we're
- 27:21Speaker 1: blowing everybody out by like forty and fifty all the
- 27:24Speaker 1: way up until the Natty, you know what I mean. So,
- 27:25Speaker 1: like I just really was enjoying and just trying to
- 27:28Speaker 1: learn as much as possible there year. So when you
- 27:30Speaker 1: win a national championship in college football, you get to
- 27:33Speaker 1: go to the White House. What was that experience? Like?
- 27:35Speaker 1: The experience was very eye open as well, and I
- 27:37Speaker 1: got to learn a lot, to see a lot of
- 27:39Speaker 1: cool things. And it was funny too, because I remember
- 27:42Speaker 1: we were sorry McDonald's and someone made a tweet and
- 27:45Speaker 1: I went viral. But it was all It was all
- 27:48Speaker 1: good and it was a good experience for me. I
- 27:50Speaker 1: remember that now as a government shutdown, some President Trump
- 27:53Speaker 1: paid for McDonald's and Burger Gang and pizza. Not exactly
- 27:56Speaker 1: the feast you expect when you go to an event
- 27:58Speaker 1: at the White House, right, I was just happy to
- 28:01Speaker 1: be there. I don't blame you, we'd all I love
- 28:03Speaker 1: that opportunity. So last year, in your third and final
- 28:06Speaker 1: year at Clemson, you played the last five games with
- 28:09Speaker 1: a back injury and had surgery after the season for
- 28:12Speaker 1: herniated disk. How bad was the pain? Pain was really bad.
- 28:16Speaker 1: The pain affected me just like in my day to
- 28:18Speaker 1: day life, like I was walking with a limp. It
- 28:21Speaker 1: hurt to go to sleep, It heart sitting meetings, like
- 28:24Speaker 1: I couldn't even sit straight up in meetings. I had
- 28:26Speaker 1: to like stand up every like a couple of minutes.
- 28:28Speaker 1: It's hard to drive, and even just mentally, you know
- 28:31Speaker 1: what I mean, Like just knowing that there's like something
- 28:34Speaker 1: you're doing when you don't know what's wrong with it.
- 28:36Speaker 1: It's kind of tough, but definitely feel like that pain,
- 28:40Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, grew me mentally and definitely
- 28:42Speaker 1: a more concept of all those things now and I
- 28:45Speaker 1: feel much more prepared head into the future. So last
- 28:49Speaker 1: year a lot of top NFL prospects opted out due
- 28:52Speaker 1: to COVID nineteen You kept playing with a herniated disc?
- 28:56Speaker 1: Why for me? I really just loved my teammates and
- 29:00Speaker 1: I loved the game of self of football, and I
- 29:03Speaker 1: realized the opportunity that I had in front of me,
- 29:06Speaker 1: and at the time I didn't know it was a
- 29:07Speaker 1: herniated disc. But still like was playing through it regardless,
- 29:13Speaker 1: and it's just kind of just like, that's kind of
- 29:16Speaker 1: the player I've always been. I've always just been like
- 29:19Speaker 1: tough and nasty, you know what I mean. And not
- 29:24Speaker 1: saying that I would advise anybody to do that, but
- 29:28Speaker 1: I feel like I definitely showed my street character through
- 29:31Speaker 1: those moments. I'm sure teammates and coaches appreciated it. We're
- 29:35Speaker 1: doing fun facts with Jackson Carmen. I'm a sucker for
- 29:38Speaker 1: good draft night footage, and yours was awesome, especially the
- 29:43Speaker 1: long embrace with your mom after the pick was announced.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Described that night, Man, that night was really just very emotional,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and I was just super grateful for everything happening, and
- 29:53Speaker 1: just like being able to take that individual moment in
- 29:55Speaker 1: and just like sit on in chaffit and not worry
- 29:57Speaker 1: about anything else, just be able to just like taking
- 30:01Speaker 1: being surrounded by family and friends and you know what
- 30:03Speaker 1: I'm saying, everything just being positive. I mean throughout thought
- 30:06Speaker 1: the entirety of the night, it was just great. So
- 30:08Speaker 1: that's definitely night I'll never forget. You genuinely seem thrilled
- 30:13Speaker 1: to be staying with your hometown team. Is that the case?
- 30:16Speaker 1: Most definitely and just like one is the place I
- 30:19Speaker 1: was born in and so that's always an awesome opportunity
- 30:21Speaker 1: to be be able to represent the place that you're from.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And also just know I was gonna be like around
- 30:26Speaker 1: my family and friends, and also I just have a
- 30:28Speaker 1: lot more opportunity outside the football being in Cincinnati, and
- 30:32Speaker 1: just like excited about our team and about who we
- 30:36Speaker 1: got here. Like I knew team was here, I knew
- 30:38Speaker 1: DJ was coming, I knew, uh, you know what I'm saying.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Joe obviously whooked us in the championship, So it's uh,
- 30:45Speaker 1: I knew what we had, Like I knew what we
- 30:47Speaker 1: had building, and I was really excited about it. You
- 30:50Speaker 1: are looking to follow on the footsteps of two at
- 30:52Speaker 1: the greatest offensive lineman and team history, and you had
- 30:55Speaker 1: relationships with Anthony Munios and Willie Anderson before being drafted
- 30:59Speaker 1: by Cincinnati. What do you admire and respect about those
- 31:02Speaker 1: two guys? Those two guys are just like I think
- 31:06Speaker 1: the thing I admire inspect the most about him. It's
- 31:09Speaker 1: kind of like how I try to carry myself is
- 31:10Speaker 1: that even though they're both probably some of the greatest
- 31:13Speaker 1: wild players that ever played the game, they will still
- 31:15Speaker 1: talk to you, just like I'm talking to you right now,
- 31:17Speaker 1: just like you're talking to me, just like as a
- 31:19Speaker 1: man and man. And they're just so humble and insightful
- 31:22Speaker 1: and wise and always have something good to say. And
- 31:27Speaker 1: it's encouraged and knowing that, like even though they're so
- 31:30Speaker 1: great and they're so like awesome, like they're still just
- 31:33Speaker 1: like you and me, you know what I mean. So
- 31:34Speaker 1: that gives you like a belief in yourself that you're
- 31:37Speaker 1: able to do good things as well. So definitely have
- 31:39Speaker 1: a lot of left about those guys. Apparently, several hours
- 31:42Speaker 1: before the Bengals chose you, they reached out to Willie
- 31:45Speaker 1: Anderson just for one final conversation, is this the guy
- 31:48Speaker 1: we should take? And clearly he gave you his stamp
- 31:51Speaker 1: of approval? What did that mean? Man? That means the world, honestly,
- 31:55Speaker 1: And just like for a guy like will It even
- 31:57Speaker 1: like say something about me in that regard is already
- 32:00Speaker 1: honored within itself, and so like, I'm definitely glad everything
- 32:03Speaker 1: worked out the way it did, and I'm very appreciative
- 32:05Speaker 1: of the role that Willie's played in my life. All Right,
- 32:08Speaker 1: a few wild card topics for Jackson Carmen aside from music,
- 32:13Speaker 1: Do you have any other hidden talents? Yes, I feel
- 32:16Speaker 1: like I feel like my number one talent is just
- 32:20Speaker 1: like learning, And I really don't feel like I'm like
- 32:22Speaker 1: multiple talents. I just feel like that time allows me
- 32:25Speaker 1: to be able to do like anything I can put
- 32:27Speaker 1: my mind too, and so like I love to cook,
- 32:30Speaker 1: I love to like travel and do like acts stuff
- 32:32Speaker 1: outside like surfing, waight surfing, jet skiing and snowboarding and
- 32:36Speaker 1: stuff like that. I love to I mean, I honestly
- 32:41Speaker 1: I feel like I can do anything. So and that's
- 32:43Speaker 1: not from like a cocky place, but that's just from
- 32:44Speaker 1: I don't like to limit myself, like on my mind,
- 32:47Speaker 1: like people say I can't do this, so I couldn't
- 32:48Speaker 1: pick myself. I couldn't picture myself doing that. I'll just
- 32:51Speaker 1: go and try it, you know what I mean, and
- 32:53Speaker 1: be able to learn it as I go. I've seen
- 32:56Speaker 1: footage on the Internet of your water skiing world's most
- 32:59Speaker 1: talented big Man and water scared. You know, it's so
- 33:02Speaker 1: crazy because everyone makes jokes about that. But at the
- 33:05Speaker 1: same time, like sports like that definitely translate the football directly,
- 33:09Speaker 1: and just like being on the water so much on
- 33:12Speaker 1: a board you just find a different level of balance
- 33:16Speaker 1: and different levels just like kind of body awareness, you
- 33:19Speaker 1: know what I mean, And those things definitely translate. So
- 33:22Speaker 1: that's why I always encourage kids or just people to
- 33:25Speaker 1: be able to just like go out and try things
- 33:27Speaker 1: and just like just learn have new experiences because it's
- 33:30Speaker 1: not gonna do anything for you but help you after
- 33:33Speaker 1: being a second round draft picking of a little bit
- 33:35Speaker 1: of spending money to work with. Is there anything you'd
- 33:37Speaker 1: like to splurge on. I'm not really like a huge splurger,
- 33:42Speaker 1: but I do. I do love good food, like high
- 33:45Speaker 1: quality food or made food. I definitely consider myself a
- 33:48Speaker 1: food critic, and so like I've been to I've been
- 33:53Speaker 1: like just going around all the steakhouses in Cincinnati kind
- 33:56Speaker 1: of making a little personal review book for him when
- 33:59Speaker 1: my release later. Gotta get a Carmen. I'm the Jeff
