- 0:01Life isn't black and white. It's not just mountain top
- 0:04moments or rock bottom seasons. It's lived in the middle, in the
- 0:08doubts and the prayers that feel unanswered, in the joy you
- 0:12didn't see coming. Welcome to Everything in
- 0:14Between, a podcast from Trinity UMC.
- 0:18Good morning everyone, so happy to be here.
- 0:26Happy birthday. We talked a lot about live
- 0:28streaming copyright, but I don't think that one counts.
- 0:32It's fine. It'll be OK, Mackenzie.
- 0:35Just know you might want to check on that later on this
- 0:37afternoon. They do it in real time now.
- 0:41Last week, Pastor Christina began this series When God Shows
- 0:46Up. Then she started out of the 1st
- 0:48chapter of Ruth. But that first chapter brought
- 0:52us into the ache of what Ruth started going through.
- 0:55Right. So Ruth chapter 1 is not a
- 0:58hallmark beginning. It is a famine, it's a
- 1:03displacement, it's death. It's Naomi losing her husband
- 1:08and two sons. It's Ruth losing her husband at
- 1:10the same time and two widows walking back towards Bethlehem
- 1:15with grief behind them and on the road ahead.
- 1:21Ruth says to Naomi, Though where you go, I will go.
- 1:25Your people shall be my people and your God, my God.
- 1:29It's beautiful, but it cost her everything.
- 1:34Sometimes we make Ruth's words sound more like a wedding poem,
- 1:37but in the context that they're spoken is on a road of grief.
- 1:43They were spoken when there's no clear future.
- 1:46They're spoken when Ruth does not know what is waiting for her
- 1:51in that little town of Bethlehem.
- 1:55So Ruth 1 ends with this loss and this loyalty.
- 1:59And then we pick up this Sunday with Ruth 2, which begins
- 2:03something quieter but just as holy as that first chapter.
- 2:10That's where I want to begin today.
- 2:11Because sometimes faith does not begin with a full plan.
- 2:14Sometimes faith begins with a single step.
- 2:21So let me read the story. Just like we're back in Sunday
- 2:24school, Ruth chapter 2, verse one through 23.
- 2:28Let's remember the story together now.
- 2:31Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's side, a prominent rich
- 2:36man, and a family of Amalek, those name who was Boaz and
- 2:41Ruth. The MO bite said to Naomi, Let
- 2:44me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain behind
- 2:48someone whose side I might find favor.
- 2:51She said to her, Go my daughter. So she went.
- 2:55She came and gleaned in the field behind the reapers.
- 2:58As it happened, she came to the part of the field belonging to
- 3:01Boaz, who was the family of. You got my head, Melissa.
- 3:07You got my head, Elimelech. Just as Boaz came from
- 3:13Bethlehem, he said to the reapers, the Lord be with you.
- 3:16And they answered, The Lord bless you.
- 3:19Then Boaz said to his young man who was in charge of the
- 3:23reapers. To whom does this young woman
- 3:25belong? The young man who was in charge
- 3:28of the reapers answered, She is the young Mobite woman who came
- 3:31back with Naomi from the country of Moab.
- 3:35She said, Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves
- 3:39behind the reapers. So she came, and she had been on
- 3:43her feet from early this morning until now without resting even
- 3:47for a moment. Then Boaz said to Ruth, Now
- 3:51listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or
- 3:55leave this one, but keep close to my young women.
- 3:58Keep your eyes on the field that it be reaped, and follow behind
- 4:02them. I have ordered the young men not
- 4:06get thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young
- 4:09men have drawn. Then she fell prostate with her
- 4:13face to the ground, and said to him, Why have I found favor in
- 4:17your sight, that you should take notice of me when I am but a
- 4:21foreigner? But Boaz answered her.
- 4:24All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of
- 4:27your husband has been fully told to me how you left your father
- 4:30and mother in your native land and came to a people that you
- 4:34did not know before. May the Lord reward you for your
- 4:37deeds, and may you have a full reward from the Lord the God of
- 4:41Israel, under whose wing wings you have come for refuge.
- 4:45Then she said, May I continue to find favor in the sight, my
- 4:49Lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your
- 4:52servant, even though I am not one of your servants.
- 4:56At meal time Boaz said to her, Come here and eat some of this
- 5:00bread, and dip your morsels in the sour wine.
- 5:02So she sat beside the reapers and heaped up from some parched
- 5:07grain. She ate until she was satisfied,
- 5:10and she had some leftover when she got up to glean.
- 5:13Boaz instructed his young men. Let her glean even among the
- 5:16standing sheaves, and do not reproach her.
- 5:19You must also put out some handfuls for her from the
- 5:22bundles and leave them for her to glean, and do not rebuke her.
- 5:27So she gleaned in the field until evening.
- 5:29Then she beat out what she had gleaned and there was about an
- 5:32EFA of barley. She picked it up and came into
- 5:35the town and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gleaned.
- 5:38Then she took out and gave her what was left and over after she
- 5:42said herself had been satisfied, her mother-in-law said to her,
- 5:45where did you glean today and where have you worked?
- 5:49Blessed be the man who took notice of you.
- 5:52So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, saying
- 5:55the name of the man with whom I work today is Boaz.
- 5:59Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, Blessed be he
- 6:02by the Lord, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the
- 6:06dead. Naomi also said to her, The man
- 6:09is a relative of ours, one of our nearest kin.
- 6:12Then Ruth and the Moabite said, he even said to me, stay close
- 6:16by my young men until they have finished all of my harvests.
- 6:20Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, it is better my
- 6:23daughter that you go out with his young women, otherwise
- 6:27someone might bother you in another field.
- 6:30So she stayed close to the young women of Boaz gleaning until the
- 6:33end of the barley and wheat harvest, and she lived there
- 6:36with her mother-in-law. This is the word of God for the
- 6:39people of God. Amen.
- 6:42What a story, what a story. Ruth in this story, though,
- 6:46doesn't know anything about Boaz yet.
- 6:49She doesn't know the end of the story.
- 6:51She doesn't know that this field is going to be the birthing
- 6:56place of hope. All she knows is that her and
- 7:01Naomi are hungry and they need food.
- 7:04So she goes. She takes that step of faith.
- 7:08And I think that there's seasons in life where faith looks like
- 7:12like strength. There's seasons when faith looks
- 7:15like maybe singing a course with confidence.
- 7:20Maybe there's seasons that faith looks like clarity and courage
- 7:24that we just know we just got to get it done.
- 7:27But there are other seasons when faith looks like just getting
- 7:31out of bed in the morning. Maybe faith for you looks like
- 7:35making a phone call that you just don't want to make.
- 7:40Maybe it's just showing up to church this morning was a faith
- 7:43step for you. Faith looks like taking the next
- 7:48right step when you don't have the whole map in front of you to
- 7:51know what the journey is going to be like.
- 7:55So Ruth goes to glean and gleaning is this really weird
- 7:59term. Back in the day, it was a
- 8:00practice that in Israel, where land owners were commanded not
- 8:05to harvest every corner of their fields, they were not supposed
- 8:08to strip the land bare. They were to leave grain behind
- 8:13for the poor, for the widowers, for the orphans, and for the
- 8:16foreigners who are walking by. In other words, gleaning wasn't
- 8:21charity, it was this design community that God had
- 8:27established. God had already told his people,
- 8:31when you have a field, do not harvest every edge.
- 8:35Leave room for someone else to live.
- 8:37And that matters because Ruth is not just poor.
- 8:42She's not just a foreigner. She's not just a widower.
- 8:45She is the most vulnerable of the population for that context,
- 8:51place and time. She's all of those things.
- 8:55And she steps into this, this strange field hoping that
- 8:59someone will allow her just to simply get something to eat.
- 9:04And then the text says, as it happened, she came to the part
- 9:09of the field belonging to Boaz. When I read the Bible, I always
- 9:14like those one liners as it happened it.
- 9:19It sounds random, it sounds like a coincidence.
- 9:23It sounds like the narrator may be almost winking at us a little
- 9:28bit. But Ruth just happened to find
- 9:31Boaz's field. Boaz just happened to be from
- 9:35that clan that I'm not going to pronounce again.
- 9:38Boaz just happens to arrive from Bethlehem.
- 9:41Boaz just happens to notice Ruth.
- 9:46But one of the quiet gifts of the book of Ruth is that God is
- 9:50at work even when God is not being loudly announced there.
- 9:55There are no burning bushes here in the 2nd chapter of Ruth.
- 9:58There's no sea being split, manna from heaven quail.
- 10:02There's no prophet standing up saying thus saith the Lord.
- 10:06It's just simply God moving through people.
- 10:13That may be one of the most Methodist things that we can say
- 10:17in this moment is that grace is not always dramatic, but grace
- 10:24is always active. God is not absent just because
- 10:30the moment is. Quiet shows up in our fields.
- 10:37Sometimes God shows up through the person who notices us in
- 10:41that field. Sometimes God shows up through
- 10:44the person, through the persons who have more than enough and
- 10:48decides not to keep it all to themselves.
- 10:52And that takes us to Boaz. Boaz arrives and sees Ruth
- 10:58gleaning, and he asks his workers, To whom does this woman
- 11:01belong? Now that question might sound
- 11:06strange to our ears at this time, but in the context, Boaz
- 11:10asked who she is connected to, who's responsible for this
- 11:15person, what is her story? And the workers tell him that
- 11:22she is a Mobite woman who came back with Naomi.
- 11:25She asked permission to glean as she has been working from the
- 11:28morning up until now. Boaz first hears her story and
- 11:35then he does something really important in this passage.
- 11:39He doesn't treat Ruth like an interruption.
- 11:42He doesn't treat her like a problem.
- 11:45He doesn't treat her like a charity case.
- 11:48He looks directly into her and treats her with dignity.
- 11:53He says, now listen, my daughter, do not go to glean
- 11:56into another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young
- 12:00women. Keep your eyes on the field that
- 12:03is being reaped and followed behind them.
- 12:06I am ordered the young men not to bother you.
- 12:09If you get thirsty, go to the vessels and drink.
- 12:12From what the young men have drawn.
- 12:14Boaz in that moment gives Ruth access.
- 12:18He gives her protection, he gives her water and he gives her
- 12:22belonging, and he gives her more than just the bare minimum of
- 12:26what the law required. And I think that this is where
- 12:31the text, I hope begins to press on us because Boaz had power.
- 12:39He had land, he had workers, he had food, he had status.
- 12:45And Ruth did not. And the question, the story is
- 12:51not will Boaz be nice? The question here is deeper.
- 12:56What will Boaz do with the power he has when somebody who is
- 13:01vulnerable is standing in his field?
- 13:08That is a Kingdom question. What do you have?
- 13:16What is your influence? What do we do with our table and
- 13:24our resources, our words, our attention?
- 13:34What do we do when someone enters our place?
- 13:38It interrupts our life, hoping that there might be enough mercy
- 13:41left for them. Boaz could have done the
- 13:48minimum. He could have said fine, let her
- 13:51glean. The law says she can, just don't
- 13:54bother me. But Boaz does not do minimum
- 13:58mercy. He embodies mercy.
- 14:03And that's the phrase I want you, us to hold today, is hope
- 14:07comes through embodying mercy. Not mercy as a vague feeling,
- 14:14not mercy as just a nice idea out there.
- 14:18Not mercy as something we believe is from a distance, but
- 14:22this embodiment of living a life of mercy.
- 14:26Mercy that notices things, Mercy that speaks, mercy that
- 14:32protects, Mercy that makes room. Mercy that leaves grain at the
- 14:37edges for others. Mercy that says you do not have
- 14:40to go somewhere else. There's room for you right here
- 14:43in my house. I think that connects so deeply
- 14:49with the words that Jesus has said in Luke 6.
- 14:54Jesus said be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
- 15:01Then Jesus says, do not judge and you will not be judged.
- 15:04Do not condemn and you will not be condemned.
- 15:06Forgive and you will be forgiven.
- 15:08Give and it will be given to you.
- 15:12And then Jesus gives this beautiful image a good measure,
- 15:17pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into
- 15:22your lap. Now, I do want to be careful
- 15:28about this Luke 6 passage. Jesus, I don't believe, has
- 15:31given us some prosperity formula of how to be prosperous.
- 15:36But he's not saying to give a little money and God will make
- 15:41you rich. I think that misses the heart of
- 15:43what Jesus is trying to say here.
- 15:45Jesus is describing the economy of a Kingdom of God.
- 15:51In the Kingdom of God, mercy is not scarce.
- 15:56In the Kingdom of God, grace is not measured with a teaspoon.
- 16:01In the Kingdom of God, forgiveness is not handed out in
- 16:04tiny portions. In the Kingdom of God,
- 16:08generosity is pressed down. It's shaken together and running
- 16:13over. But why?
- 16:18Because the Father, creator of you and me and all the universe
- 16:24is just like that. Be merciful, Jesus says, just as
- 16:31your Father is merciful. Boaz in this story becomes a
- 16:37living picture of that kind of mercy.
- 16:40He does not just believe in mercy, He practices it in the
- 16:44field. And Ruth receives it with
- 16:48humility. She falls on her face and asks,
- 16:52what if I found favor in your sight that you should notice me?
- 16:56And that question is heartbreaking for somebody who
- 16:59might be on the other side of that struggle.
- 17:02Because Ruth knows who she is. She knows her status.
- 17:09She knows she's an outsider. She knows she doesn't belong.
- 17:12She knows that she has no claim on Boaz as a husband.
- 17:15She knows she is dependent on the mercy of someone else.
- 17:20But Boaz answers her by naming what he sees in her.
- 17:24He says All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the
- 17:27death of your husband has been fully told to me.
- 17:31Boaz knew Ruth. Faithful faithfulness.
- 17:36He has heard about her loyalty and has heard about her courage.
- 17:39And then when he knows about all that stuff, he takes a moment to
- 17:42bless her. May the Lord reward you for your
- 17:44deeds, and may you have a full reward from the Lord, the God of
- 17:48Israel, under whose wings you have come to refuge.
- 17:54It's another beautiful image under whose wings you have come
- 17:58for refuge. Ruth came to Bethlehem with
- 18:01Naomi. Then she went to a field.
- 18:06But Boaz, he's a deeper truth that Ruth has come under the
- 18:10wings of God. Ruth may not fully know it yet,
- 18:16but God has not abandoned her or Naomi.
- 18:20And I wonder how many US, how many of us need that word today
- 18:25that maybe you're in the field and you're not seeing the end of
- 18:29the harvest. You're just seeing another day
- 18:31of gleaning. Maybe your story is not resolved
- 18:36yet. Maybe you're still carrying
- 18:38grief in your life from chapter 1.
- 18:44You may still feel like you're gleaning from the edges, just
- 18:47trying to gather up enough grace just to get through the day.
- 18:52But that doesn't mean God is absent in your life.
- 18:56It may mean you're standing in the very field where hope is
- 18:59beginning to grow. If that is you, I want you to
- 19:05hear this. The first step matters.
- 19:11You don't have to have the whole future figured out, but you can
- 19:16be faithful today. Go to the field, whatever that
- 19:20looks like. Gather the grace that God gives
- 19:23you today. Trust that God, under whose
- 19:26wings you have come for refuge, is already at work in ways you
- 19:30cannot see. I want to go back to the people
- 19:35who are in this room. Who are the Boazes?
- 19:39Do you have some kind of field? And the question is, what will
- 19:46you do with your field? What are you going to do with
- 19:50the field? Will we harvest every edge for
- 19:54ourself and not leave any extra? Will we leave room for mercy or
- 19:58we just do the bare minimum? Or will William, will we have
- 20:03take the opportunity to embody the mercy of the Father?
- 20:08That's not just something to believe.
- 20:10That's something I think that we have to practice.
- 20:14It doesn't come natural to us, but I think we need to practice
- 20:17that the church should be filled, should be a field where
- 20:22mercy can be gleaned. That does not mean we fix every
- 20:27problem that comes up. Boaz does not solve Ruth's
- 20:31entire story in one day. In fact, I would even argue that
- 20:35he doesn't solve her story at all.
- 20:38But he does make room for hope. He does what he can with what he
- 20:46has, and God uses that. That may be the invitation for
- 20:53us today. Do what you can with what you
- 20:57have. Take the first step.
- 21:03Leave room at the edges. Notice the person that's been
- 21:08brought into your life. Speak dignity into that person
- 21:14and practice protection. Give mercy and good measure.
- 21:20Pressed down, shaken together, and running over.
- 21:25Because when God shows up, it's often through people who have
- 21:27learned to leave room for mercy. And today, as we come to the
- 21:33communion table, we come to the deepest sign of embodied mercy.
- 21:39God did not love us from a distance in Jesus Christ.
- 21:43He took mercy on his flesh. Mercy had hands.
- 21:47Mercy had feet. Mercy sat at the table with
- 21:50sinners and strangers. Mercy touched the sick.
- 21:56It touched the outcasts. Mercy gave itself away.
- 22:02This table is not a reward for people who have figured it all
- 22:05out. This table is a grace for people
- 22:08who are hungry. It's mercy for people who are
- 22:11weary. It's bread for people who know
- 22:14what empty feels like. It is the place where Christ
- 22:18meets us, not with a small measure, but with grace, pressed
- 22:21down, shaken together, running over.
- 22:23Are we gleaning the table? So whether you come today
- 22:28feeling like Ruth and just trying to take your next step,
- 22:33or whether you come knowing God is calling you to be more like
- 22:37Boaz, making room for mercies in your field, come to the table,
- 22:45Come under the wings of the God who still are refuge, Come
- 22:52receive Christ's mercy. And then I beg of you, go and
- 22:58body the mercy for somebody else.
