- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to bill Handle on demand from KFI AM
- 0:04Speaker 1: six forty bill handle.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Here. It is a Tuesday morning, April twenty one. Okay,
- 0:12Speaker 2: what's on everybody's wind? And they are all kinds of
- 0:14Speaker 2: issues going on with the Mideast. You know what's really
- 0:17Speaker 2: weird is what the stock market is up right now,
- 0:20Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty points, and that's after talks has
- 0:24Speaker 2: failed have failed, and the cost of jet fuel is
- 0:30Speaker 2: such that there's such a shortage that airlines are well,
- 0:34Speaker 2: I mean they're stopping to fly in certain markets and
- 0:38Speaker 2: the cost is so astronomical that they are spinning. It's
- 0:41Speaker 2: weird out there. No one knows what's going on. Also,
- 0:45Speaker 2: what tonight was going to be the deadline for the
- 0:47Speaker 2: peace talks, Well now it's tomorrow night, and the President
- 0:52Speaker 2: keeps on changing deadlines, and I mean, no one knows
- 0:55Speaker 2: what's going on, and you know, it's you know, what's
- 1:00Speaker 2: going to happen. I don't even prognosticate. I mean I
- 1:02Speaker 2: used to say this is what I think is going
- 1:04Speaker 2: to happen. I don't even do that anymore because no
- 1:06Speaker 2: one knows. I ask, and it's up in the air interviews,
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's up in the air. So a couple of things.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I thought about this. I had this conversation with a
- 1:15Speaker 2: friend of mine yesterday, and it is what Israel is
- 1:20Speaker 2: doing to in the case for example, Lebanon and the
- 1:27Speaker 2: attack the United States they had on Iran. You know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: at what point do these Arab countries simply say, well,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I mean Iranians are not Arab, I think Lebanese are.
- 1:41Speaker 2: At what point do they say, you know what, We're
- 1:44Speaker 2: not going to destroy Israel. You know, keep on saying
- 1:48Speaker 2: we're going to destroy Israel. And do you really think
- 1:51Speaker 2: that's going to happen?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Now? Are the Israelis committing horrific war crimes? You bet
- 1:58Speaker 1: you they are.
- 1:59Speaker 2: What they what happened in Gaza, although look what happened
- 2:02Speaker 2: in Gaza. Hamas is still there. Hamas still controls half
- 2:07Speaker 2: of the country, no matter what Israel has done, and
- 2:10Speaker 2: that's take it out, eighty eighty percent of the entire
- 2:15Speaker 2: country's infrastructure, and they're housing and hospitals, and I mean,
- 2:20Speaker 2: go on and on killing one hundred thousand people, and
- 2:27Speaker 2: Hamas is still talking about We're going to destroy Israel.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And then as crazy as Hesbela is. So the attack
- 2:36Speaker 2: on the attack on Iran, and Iran fights back, what
- 2:43Speaker 2: does Hesbela do? And there was no fight with Hesbelah.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I mean they were out of the picture. Israel has
- 2:50Speaker 2: not attacked Lebanon for years and years. They start launching
- 2:54Speaker 2: missiles in the northern Israel. What did they think? And
- 2:58Speaker 2: now you have Israel responding in a way that a
- 3:02Speaker 2: good part of the world is saying, this is crazy.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Israel's becoming a pariah state. It's that simple. It has
- 3:09Speaker 2: gone from being a poster child of the the Mid East,
- 3:16Speaker 2: representation of the Western world, the ally, the biggest ally
- 3:19Speaker 2: we have, the only ally we really have, and now
- 3:22Speaker 2: it's going into a paria state. And yet at the
- 3:27Speaker 2: same time, you know, you turn to these organizations, these terrorists,
- 3:33Speaker 2: organizations say hey, you know what, do you want to
- 3:36Speaker 2: take care of your own people? Is it really that
- 3:39Speaker 2: important enough? Is having a nuclear possibility of a nuclear weapon?
- 3:44Speaker 2: Is that that important enough? So you're putting all of
- 3:47Speaker 2: these people at risk, your economy, your citizens. I that
- 3:53Speaker 2: part I don't understand that, that fanaticism, I just don't get.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And at the same time, once again, I'm going to say,
- 3:59Speaker 2: what Israel was doing in retaliation is way way too much.
- 4:02Speaker 2: But then you know, what does this real do And
- 4:06Speaker 2: they're saying, we've got to do something, and they do.
- 4:08Speaker 1: They just never have hit this extent. They truly have never.
- 4:14Speaker 2: So we've got peace talks again happening, supposed to end
- 4:18Speaker 2: tonight and tomorrow night. And the president has threatened the
- 4:23Speaker 2: taking out every power plant, every bridge in Iran.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And will he do it? Well?
- 4:31Speaker 2: I think he certainly can make that order. I absolutely
- 4:36Speaker 2: believe that he has no problem giving that order. And
- 4:39Speaker 2: so what does Iran do? Well, they're still blocking the
- 4:43Speaker 2: straight of horrm moves, although they're saying, how can you
- 4:47Speaker 2: how can we have peace talks if we're willing to
- 4:50Speaker 2: open up the straight of horror moves and you're still
- 4:54Speaker 2: blockading our ports. You know it's even Stephen or even Mohammed.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Or even hum Is.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Raman Hehmed. Now I'll get some kind of a I
- 5:11Speaker 2: don't know those arap names. All right, we're done with
- 5:14Speaker 2: that quick question. Well that's so quick question. All right.
- 5:17Speaker 2: For those of you in business, and you did any
- 5:21Speaker 2: importing like I do with my best buddy and friend Savile,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and we have an import system. We import from China, cookware,
- 5:32Speaker 2: we're paying and are paying some pretty steve tariffs, and
- 5:36Speaker 2: so we're always already jumping into asking for a refund.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And right now the refund system is going live, and
- 5:46Speaker 2: it looks we're looking to return one hundred and sixty
- 5:49Speaker 2: six billion dollars to importers per court order. A couple
- 5:53Speaker 2: of things. The President arbitrarily established these tariffs just hey,
- 5:58Speaker 2: woke up one morning and says tariff time, and so
- 6:03Speaker 2: it's like hammer time. He did it while sort of
- 6:05Speaker 2: breaking break dancing, and people got a little upset about that,
- 6:11Speaker 2: as in, wait a second, don't you need Congress to
- 6:13Speaker 2: do this, Well, yes you do. So the President went
- 6:16Speaker 2: balls to the wall and did it anyway, and of
- 6:20Speaker 2: course the lawsuit was filed immediately, and the court said
- 6:23Speaker 2: he did not have the authority to do this, and
- 6:26Speaker 2: therefore all of the tariffs go back to the people,
- 6:30Speaker 2: the companies that paid the tariffs, and they're figuring one
- 6:34Speaker 2: hundred and sixty six billion dollars. And so so far
- 6:39Speaker 2: the system actually is starting to work. Unlike governmental systems
- 6:44Speaker 2: where a lot of money is returned and you have
- 6:46Speaker 2: all kinds of glitches, it's going relatively smoothly.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But a couple of points. I want to make about this.
- 6:52Speaker 2: First of all, when the President said we're making tons
- 6:56Speaker 2: of money, We're bringing in hundreds of billions of dollars, true,
- 7:01Speaker 2: bringing in one hundred and sixty six billion dollars, Well,
- 7:04Speaker 2: the court said no, thank you, and I think it's
- 7:08Speaker 2: a Supreme Court said no authority.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Therefore those tariffs were illegal.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Therefore the companies that paid those tariffs are entitled to
- 7:17Speaker 2: a refund. And here is the other issue. As I've said,
- 7:22Speaker 2: the court has no enforcement policy or powers at absolutely none.
- 7:27Speaker 2: All the court can do the Supreme Court and Appeals
- 7:30Speaker 2: Court is issue orders, nothing more, nothing less. Constitutionally, of course,
- 7:35Speaker 2: it is the interpretation of the constitutions what the courts
- 7:38Speaker 2: give whether something is legal illegal, And in the case,
- 7:42Speaker 2: in this case, the tariffs are unconstitutional because it's Congress
- 7:46Speaker 2: that does this, and you have presidents to go okay, fine,
- 7:51Speaker 2: And you would think this president would be the ultimate
- 7:54Speaker 2: in saying, you know, I don't care what the courts say.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I'm going to move ahead with this, and there's nothing
- 8:02Speaker 2: anybody can do about it. You know, people can't say
- 8:06Speaker 2: no the executive branch. What the Department of Justice is
- 8:09Speaker 2: going to say no to his Department of Justice.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Of course, not.
- 8:14Speaker 2: One of the things about the Trump administration that actually
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'm not going to say I.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Admire, but I'm somewhat surprised.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And this is credit to the administration, is they are
- 8:28Speaker 2: actually paying attention to court orders.
- 8:31Speaker 1: At this point.
- 8:32Speaker 2: They're absolutely paying attention to court orders, and this is
- 8:37Speaker 2: one of them. Now, if you go back to Richard
- 8:41Speaker 2: Nixon days, if you remember Watergate and the release of
- 8:45Speaker 2: the tapes, the Watergate tapes which caused Nixon his presidency,
- 8:51Speaker 2: and the Supreme Court ruled on whether or not the
- 8:54Speaker 2: tape should be released, Nixon said, outright, if the court
- 8:59Speaker 2: votes against him in a split decision, in a five
- 9:04Speaker 2: to four decision, because that's what the courts were made
- 9:07Speaker 2: up at that point, if they vote against him, if
- 9:10Speaker 2: they rule against him, he is going to ignore a
- 9:13Speaker 2: court order from the Supreme Court, straight out, he said,
- 9:16Speaker 2: I'm going to ignore the order. And then you go,
- 9:19Speaker 2: WHOA you think that's the problem. And President Trump has
- 9:25Speaker 2: not come anywhere near that. He is absolutely paying attention.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Now he starts screaming about these gestures as being left
- 9:33Speaker 2: wing radicals, even the ones that vote in his favor,
- 9:37Speaker 2: and they're all left wing lunatic radicals. But that's what
- 9:40Speaker 2: the president does when someone either votes against them or
- 9:42Speaker 2: says something against them, or moves against him, but he
- 9:45Speaker 2: is actually paying attention. So what ended up with Richard Nixon?
- 9:49Speaker 2: The decision was unanimous. It was nine zero, and at
- 9:55Speaker 2: that point he could no longer argue a split decision,
- 10:00Speaker 2: and if it is that close.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I'm going to ignore the court order.
- 10:04Speaker 2: And he said, at that point, okay, I mean nine zero,
- 10:07Speaker 2: What the hell do you do about that? That would
- 10:10Speaker 2: be a constitutional crisis of the first water absolutely. So
- 10:17Speaker 2: the good news is the court said the terroristal illegal.
- 10:21Speaker 2: The Trump administration said, okay, we got it, and we're
- 10:26Speaker 2: now figuring out a way to return one hundred and
- 10:28Speaker 2: sixty six billion dollars to importers.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And so.
- 10:33Speaker 2: The filing has gone completely crazy when you talk about
- 10:36Speaker 2: the tens of thousands of companies that have already filed,
- 10:41Speaker 2: but including US, including Platinum Cookware, Lake Industries. And then
- 10:47Speaker 2: there's also a period there's also once accepted if there
- 10:51Speaker 2: is an argument that the origin looks kind of fishy,
- 10:56Speaker 2: that'll probably go.
- 10:57Speaker 1: To a human four review.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So there's setting up a bureaucracy to do this and
- 11:02Speaker 2: you know, it looks like it's going to work.
- 11:04Speaker 1: So far, so good. All right, Oh, this is a story.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Remember that mama bear's death in Monrovia, and all of
- 11:13Speaker 2: a sudden people got very upset about that. How dare
- 11:16Speaker 2: you kill a mama bear under any circumstances. So, state
- 11:20Speaker 2: lawmakers are considering legislation mandating non lethal solution to human
- 11:26Speaker 2: wildlife conflicts Senate Bill eleven thirty. The Wildlife Coexistence Program,
- 11:33Speaker 2: or We Like Bears to Stay Alive is providing public education,
- 11:38Speaker 2: technical assistant non lethal deterrence like barriers and noise machines.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Okay, so there it is. So bear is eating.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Your toddler and you whip out a noise machine.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Okay, that works.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Senator Catherine Blakespear, Incinnita's Democrat, of course, believes that the
- 11:58Speaker 2: bear's death, voting the state's decision to kill four wolves
- 12:02Speaker 2: last year, that we're preying on cattle. Well, it raised
- 12:07Speaker 2: public concern because you can't hit those wolves either, no
- 12:10Speaker 2: matter how many animals they decide to have for dinner.
- 12:14Speaker 2: And she said that made everybody realize we have to
- 12:17Speaker 2: do better here. So at a legislative hearing, Blakespeare told
- 12:23Speaker 2: the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water that a
- 12:27Speaker 2: three year state initiative offering similar services are seeing positive results,
- 12:34Speaker 2: until it was discontinued two years ago after running dry
- 12:39Speaker 2: and realizing that bears were going deaf because of the
- 12:43Speaker 2: noise of batement. By the way, I have no idea
- 12:45Speaker 2: if that's true or not. My guess is no, because
- 12:47Speaker 2: it's very difficult to give a bury hearing test, although
- 12:51Speaker 2: they have tried. The bill also renames the state program
- 12:55Speaker 2: that reimburses ranchers who lose livestock to wolves. Now, that
- 12:59Speaker 2: is in because let's say the market is such that
- 13:03Speaker 2: livestock is worth less than a cost to actually raise them,
- 13:07Speaker 2: which is hard, which is not hard to do, and
- 13:09Speaker 2: it happens quite often. You just let your cattle go
- 13:12Speaker 2: and then you do wolf Appreciation Day and have them
- 13:18Speaker 2: come in and eat your cattle. So it's that's been
- 13:23Speaker 2: called the Wolf Life Livestock Coexistent and Compassation Program. Okay,
- 13:29Speaker 2: fair enough, And so who is supporting this organization or
- 13:34Speaker 2: this legislation? Well, the National Wildlife Federation, Defenders of Wildlife, California,
- 13:41Speaker 2: State Association of Counties, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Citizens for
- 13:46Speaker 2: Los Angeles Wildlife.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Who is against that?
- 13:51Speaker 2: That bill, California Farm Bureau, California Cattleman's Association, certain food
- 13:58Speaker 2: providers that make bear jerky, Neil, Come on, you know
- 14:06Speaker 2: bears jerkey is pretty good, isn't it not bad?
- 14:10Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about any of this because
- 14:12Speaker 1: black and brown bears aren't allowed in your neighborhood.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Wow wow, See, and I get in trouble for stuff
- 14:20Speaker 2: like that. Not you in trouble. It's the truth. You
- 14:24Speaker 2: live in a gated neighborhood. Fancy. Oh wow? Okay, and
- 14:31Speaker 2: you are really good to homeless people because they camp
- 14:34Speaker 2: out in your front yard and on the sidewalk.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Congratulations.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Different philosophy, you know, you look at life very differently
- 14:41Speaker 2: than I do.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm a man of the people. You are a man
- 14:43Speaker 1: of the people. Okay.
- 14:45Speaker 2: This bill, by the way, already went through the Senate
- 14:48Speaker 2: Committee on Appropriations in a five to one vote. All right,
- 14:53Speaker 2: so it looks like the environmentalists on this one are
- 14:59Speaker 2: probably going to And why is that? Because California is California.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Can you imagine in Wyoming or South or North Dakota
- 15:07Speaker 2: something like this happening? Not a chance, But that's California.
- 15:13Speaker 2: We're super liberal. I mean five to one. I'm surprised
- 15:16Speaker 2: that there was one person on the committee that voted
- 15:19Speaker 2: against this. Maybe living in a cattle district or a
- 15:24Speaker 2: beef district. I have no idea, but the bottom line, well,
- 15:30Speaker 2: you know, be prepared. You can't get near those bears.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Well you don't want to anyway. So you get one
- 15:36Speaker 2: of those air horns with in front of a bear.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Unless you're getting between a bear, a mama bear, and
- 15:44Speaker 2: a couple of baby bears. Man, then you get out
- 15:47Speaker 2: of dodge very very quickly, for sure. Okay, Okay, I
- 15:52Speaker 2: don't know if you fly or not. I do a
- 15:55Speaker 2: fair amount of flying. And you know it's expensive enough anyway,
- 15:59Speaker 2: especially with the junk fees that you now pay.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I mean they started doing that.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Southwest started charging for bags, and Southwest started charging for
- 16:10Speaker 2: the emergency aisle, and Southwest and other airlines are charging
- 16:15Speaker 2: if you want to sit next to someone. I mean,
- 16:17Speaker 2: it has become crazy with these junk fees.
- 16:23Speaker 1: So why that.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Happened, Well because costs went up. Hey be prepared now
- 16:28Speaker 2: for even more grief. Why is that because the airlines
- 16:31Speaker 2: are about to run out of jet fuel and that's
- 16:35Speaker 2: in consequence of the war. Now, probably not in the
- 16:38Speaker 2: United States. They'll be enough, but it's going to be
- 16:43Speaker 2: too expensive because oil is a world commodity.
- 16:50Speaker 1: You know, the President has said we have all the
- 16:52Speaker 1: oil we need. We are not.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Reliant on midi soil because that's just weport oil. But
- 17:01Speaker 2: he didn't mention that the cost of that oil is
- 17:06Speaker 2: as expensive as any place in the world because it
- 17:09Speaker 2: is a commodity. You would think because we export oil,
- 17:13Speaker 2: it would be cheaper here. No, it's the same price.
- 17:16Speaker 2: And out of the oil comes jet fuel. And if
- 17:20Speaker 2: you don't have a jet enough jet fuel, what happens, Well,
- 17:23Speaker 2: airplanes don't fly. You know cars don't drive without gasoline. Well,
- 17:29Speaker 2: airplanes don't fly. So as a result of that, what's happening, Well,
- 17:32Speaker 2: you've got a you've got certain airlines pulling out of
- 17:35Speaker 2: small airports. You've got the number of international flights being pulled.
- 17:42Speaker 2: And that's what was happening before. Fuel is the second
- 17:46Speaker 2: most expensive item expension expenditure that airlines have, the first
- 17:52Speaker 2: being the first one being labor. You would think that
- 17:57Speaker 2: the cost of the planes themselves, because these are three
- 18:01Speaker 2: hundred million dollar airplanes, I mean, just crazy expensive. And
- 18:05Speaker 2: the maintenance is beyond belief. Nope, that's not as expensive
- 18:09Speaker 2: as the cost of labor and certainly jet fuel. And
- 18:13Speaker 2: I don't think we've ever had a situation. I mean,
- 18:15Speaker 2: there have been times when jet fuel or fuel in
- 18:17Speaker 2: general has been really expensive, but there's never been a
- 18:21Speaker 2: time where there just wasn't enough. So if you put
- 18:25Speaker 2: the four largest US airlines, United American, Delta Southwest, you're
- 18:31Speaker 2: looking at one hundred million dollars a day on average
- 18:36Speaker 2: among them. Delta last week said it could spend an
- 18:40Speaker 2: additional two and additional two billion dollars on fuel this
- 18:44Speaker 2: year and it owns its own refinery.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Did you know that Delta owns its own refinery. I
- 18:50Speaker 1: didn't know that.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And still and so last minute walk up fares to
- 18:59Speaker 2: hot dust the nation, the vacation destinations.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You know, you just decided at the last wit.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Of okay, I'm going up seventy four percent from earlier
- 19:08Speaker 2: this month.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty crazy.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Asian countries are starting to limit jet fuel exports and
- 19:18Speaker 2: what's the first airline going to go. It looks like
- 19:20Speaker 2: Spirit is going to be out of business. They've been
- 19:22Speaker 2: in bankruptcy twice and they were coming out of bankruptcy.
- 19:26Speaker 2: But last week we heard no, this is the straw
- 19:31Speaker 2: that broke the monkey and the barrels, you know, back
- 19:37Speaker 2: or however that works the tip of the barrel with
- 19:42Speaker 2: the camel, right, okay, and that is it's going to
- 19:48Speaker 2: do it. Spirit is probably going to go out of business.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It's low cost airline and it relied more on cheap
- 19:55Speaker 2: fuel than any other airline. So congratulations. This war is
- 20:00Speaker 2: really costing big, big money. And that's just the start.
- 20:03Speaker 2: If this war continues, you just wait, because you're talking
- 20:07Speaker 2: about the cost of fertilizer is going to double. That
- 20:10Speaker 2: means the cost of growing things are going to increase,
- 20:14Speaker 2: and it's all going to be expensive a lot. All right,
- 20:19Speaker 2: Coming up Mike Dubuski, ABC News Technology reporter about Apple
- 20:24Speaker 2: announcing its new head of Apple, replacing Tim Cook, who's
- 20:30Speaker 2: been there for fifteen years.
- 20:31Speaker 1: We'll be back. Let's show. This is KFI AM six forty.
- 20:36Speaker 1: You've been listening to the Bill Handle Show.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Catch my show Monday through Friday six am to nine am,
- 20:41Speaker 2: and anytime on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
