- 0:29Speaker 2: HBCU game, the Futures Game, and then the Celebrity All
- 0:35Speaker 2: Star Game softball, which, by the way, you know, if
- 0:39Speaker 2: I'm in the celebrity game, they're scraping for celebrities.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Let's be honest. Let's be honest. They watched too much
- 0:44Speaker 3: EXAs yes, big fans too much.
- 0:46Speaker 4: St.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Louis Cardinals version home.
- 0:49Speaker 2: In just a few minutes, we're gonna talk to Ryan Dempster,
- 0:51Speaker 2: who was a big.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Part of you know, me being a Cups fan.
- 0:55Speaker 2: He was super consistent with the Cups picture for nine years.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Ryan Dempster's co host of MLB Network's Intentional Talk, so
- 1:03Speaker 2: be sure to check that out.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And also as far as what he's.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Doing here, he's calling the celebrity game that I'm playing,
- 1:12Speaker 2: which is gonna be on a whole bunch of things,
- 1:13Speaker 2: so by the time you hear this, you won't be
- 1:14Speaker 2: able to watch it. So Ryan Dempster coming up just
- 1:17Speaker 2: a little bit around the room quickly, and there's one, two, three, four,
- 1:20Speaker 2: five of us here favorite baseball player growing up.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Oh, I love Ricky Henderson. You got to pick one.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But because I felt like it was leading, like I
- 1:30Speaker 2: love Ricky Henderson.
- 1:33Speaker 4: But I even my buddy hit had He told me
- 1:36Speaker 4: that he sent Nolan Ryan a letter. He like, I
- 1:39Speaker 4: don't even know how he did it back then. Maybe
- 1:41Speaker 4: he was in the back of Beckett like send this
- 1:43Speaker 4: or whatever and Nolan Ryan will get it. And he
- 1:45Speaker 4: sent him a letter how big of a fan he was,
- 1:47Speaker 4: And Nolan Ryan sent back a autograph picture, and I
- 1:50Speaker 4: was like, that's I'm gonna do that with Ricky Henderson.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And so I did it, send a letter off, got enough.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Probably never got to him.
- 1:56Speaker 5: There.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I hear Ricky is a really great guy.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Really yeah, Like from anybody that I know that had
- 2:01Speaker 2: played with him or been around him, he was apparently
- 2:03Speaker 2: like the cards in the clubhouse.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Like most fun guy around. So I'm sorry didn't.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Happen for you, Budy that's all right, man, I'm over
- 2:08Speaker 4: it now.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Let's go to read read who is your favorite baseball
- 2:11Speaker 2: player growing up?
- 2:12Speaker 6: I'd have to say David Ortiz nice m because he
- 2:17Speaker 6: was a lefty and I was just like, I didn't
- 2:19Speaker 6: I want to be able to hit the ball.
- 2:20Speaker 5: I him, man, and.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You were also from the Dominican and.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, all the above.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Goal wasn't a big poppy one day. It was like,
- 2:29Speaker 3: but maybe not in baseball, you know.
- 2:31Speaker 4: What I mean.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Kevin no mare Garcia Park. Growing up, he's a cup
- 2:35Speaker 2: for a while. When he came over with the Cubs,
- 2:36Speaker 2: I pumped. Yea simpster played with no more at the
- 2:38Speaker 2: same time.
- 2:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I was very upset when he left the Red Sox.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I loved him as a kid.
- 2:41Speaker 7: I would be up there playing little league and just
- 2:43Speaker 7: doing like, do you know the whole batting glove or
- 2:45Speaker 7: routine that he had. Dude, I would do that every time,
- 2:47Speaker 7: like I knew what I was doing up there in
- 2:48Speaker 7: thirty grade.
- 2:48Speaker 5: It was awesome.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So off I Ricky favorite baseball player ever.
- 2:51Speaker 8: Scott Fletcher Ranger, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cub White Sox played
- 2:56Speaker 8: for the Brewers for a little bit.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Red Sox.
- 2:58Speaker 8: But he is to this day still my favorite athlete
- 3:02Speaker 8: all the time.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I think, do you know him?
- 3:05Speaker 4: I do now? I didn't.
- 3:07Speaker 8: I mean not so much when I was, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 8: ten years old, but uh, great guy?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Or was he your favorite when you were ten? Or
- 3:14Speaker 2: is he now looking back because you know now he's
- 3:16Speaker 2: your favorite?
- 3:16Speaker 4: He was? He was always my favorite.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It's my favorite.
- 3:18Speaker 8: Ryan Dempster now, Scott Fletcher has been my favorite athlete
- 3:24Speaker 8: for as long as I ever had one.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Mine's Mark Grace first basement for the Cubs, number seventeen
- 3:28Speaker 2: by far, my favorite player, the only really athlete that
- 3:31Speaker 2: hasn't responded or given me any sort of time a
- 3:34Speaker 2: day for an interview.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:35Speaker 3: We've tried every way possible.
- 3:36Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I've tried.
- 3:37Speaker 3: We can get nothing.
- 3:38Speaker 7: It's like he doesn't even exist anymore.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But he's also like the the you know, color commentator
- 3:43Speaker 2: for the Arizona Diamondback.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So he's in media.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Okay, that is weird because it's not like he went
- 3:46Speaker 4: in heightening.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, h my. So that's my official answer
- 3:50Speaker 3: to that.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Before I pivoted this story, before Mark Grace and probably
- 3:55Speaker 2: number two all time would have been Andre Dawson. Who
- 3:57Speaker 2: played right field for the Cubs the Big Hawk, and
- 4:00Speaker 2: so the jersey that I have here, I'm not wearing it.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I have two Cub jerseys with me, which is so
- 4:04Speaker 3: lame for an adult.
- 4:05Speaker 4: You brought two Cubs jerseys. I bought this.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I bought this one on the road.
- 4:08Speaker 7: I wanted every second since.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I have an autograph Andre Dawson Cubs jersey that
- 4:15Speaker 2: I was gonna wear, like because I have to go
- 4:18Speaker 2: in a what time is it in? Like an hour
- 4:20Speaker 2: and a half, two hours and do the credentials and
- 4:24Speaker 2: go meet with the other celebrities who were playing, and
- 4:27Speaker 2: then we do batting practice that kind of stuff. And
- 4:29Speaker 2: I was gonna wear that jersey that auto Andre Dawson
- 4:32Speaker 2: during or I can just wear like a shoe.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Is that a lame for me to do?
- 4:36Speaker 8: Andre Dawson is across the street signing autographs as we speak.
- 4:40Speaker 4: What what are we doing? Hey? Wrap it up now?
- 4:46Speaker 8: I downloaded the chart game app No, there's no charge.
- 4:51Speaker 4: They're all over there signing autographs for free.
- 4:53Speaker 8: I believe, I believe so. But yeah, Andre Dawson is
- 4:57Speaker 8: across the street.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Dang, that would be cool. I wish you could get
- 4:59Speaker 3: to talk to Andre Dawes, who knew I did.
- 5:03Speaker 4: I knew was good.
- 5:04Speaker 2: We haven't had he hasn't been on yet, and I'm saying,
- 5:07Speaker 2: we're also trying to get other people too. It's not
- 5:09Speaker 2: they're not compared. We tried to get like four or
- 5:11Speaker 2: five people and he's like, no, Ryan, Yeah, no, crap.
- 5:14Speaker 3: It was awesome. We'll do that now.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Then let's talk to Ryan Dempster again. Check out Ryan's show.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Ryan Dempster is the co host of MLB Network's Intentional Talk,
- 5:24Speaker 2: Get It Walk. Nobody didn't get it?
- 5:28Speaker 4: Second, did you get it? I got it?
- 5:30Speaker 2: If we got we're all covered and none in.
- 5:33Speaker 3: It's all toward read. But Read's like I don't have
- 5:35Speaker 3: a favorite. Sometimes. I was happy that he had a
- 5:37Speaker 3: favorite Read.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 5:38Speaker 6: I used to play all the baseball games and he
- 5:41Speaker 6: was my favorite.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Uh yeah, but do your top do your mount Rushmore
- 5:44Speaker 2: a favorite baseball players?
- 5:45Speaker 6: Oh cheez, okay, it would have to be David Ortiz
- 5:49Speaker 6: number one. Uh, to be honest, Matt Holliday at number two.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Because we went to did you get a ball signed behind?
- 5:57Speaker 6: Then I did get a No, No, I didn't, Sad the.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Second favorite player of all time and that's who you
- 6:02Speaker 2: didn't ask for autograph when you ask everybody else for
- 6:05Speaker 2: autograph anywhere we go.
- 6:06Speaker 6: I definitely wanted to. I had it in my pocket
- 6:08Speaker 6: and I walked out with my head down, and I
- 6:10Speaker 6: was like, I just couldn't do it, really do it.
- 6:13Speaker 6: But yeah, so Matt Holliday because I saw him play
- 6:16Speaker 6: when he was with the Rockies.
- 6:17Speaker 5: That was like my first MLB game.
- 6:18Speaker 6: I went to, Let's see who else?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Mm Babe Ruth?
- 6:27Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Gary, to be honest, that's all I got.
- 6:29Speaker 3: You got too, I like that. Can you think of
- 6:32Speaker 3: another player that you just kind of liked?
- 6:34Speaker 5: I mean Derek Jeter, but every.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Gay that's three? Okay, that's Ali Rushman. Okay. Who's playing now?
- 6:40Speaker 3: Who's younger than you?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Is your fourth favorite players younger than you.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Are?
- 6:46Speaker 2: We gonna go over to Ryan Dempster now, who played
- 6:48Speaker 2: for the Marlins, the Reds, the Cubs, the Rangers, the
- 6:50Speaker 2: Red Sox. He's a two time All Star. He's a
- 6:52Speaker 2: twenty thirteen World Series champion with the Red Sox. He's
- 6:55Speaker 2: in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame over two thousand strikeouts.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Here he is Ryan Dempster. We're here with Ryan Dempster.
- 7:05Speaker 4: This is cool.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And I didn't wear a Cub jersey on purpose because
- 7:07Speaker 2: I know you were coming. Because we were like, I wonder.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Vinyl show up.
- 7:10Speaker 4: He's worn this for three days.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, non souf if I ran into it any city.
- 7:12Speaker 2: We just came from Arizona, so I was like, maybe
- 7:13Speaker 2: we running Ryan Dempster. I'll wear my jersey. I'm massive
- 7:16Speaker 2: Cubs fan. So let's just say that ahead of time.
- 7:18Speaker 2: This could be a very Cubs oriented interview asking a
- 7:23Speaker 2: lot of questions, but softball Ricky is here. Do you
- 7:25Speaker 2: want to ask your one question that you tried to
- 7:27Speaker 2: whisper to him that was kind of.
- 7:28Speaker 9: Creepy because I mean, maybe you wouldn't want to answer. Okay,
- 7:31Speaker 9: go ahead with the microphone, is okay? I mean, I
- 7:33Speaker 9: mean I longtime Texas Ranger fan. I've had season tickets,
- 7:39Speaker 9: but I love baseball history. I have an affinity for
- 7:43Speaker 9: all of the sort of blue bud traditional teams, Yankees, Cubs,
- 7:48Speaker 9: you know, Red Sox.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Is it would you say that you.
- 7:53Speaker 8: Were more or were prone to be more excited playing
- 7:58Speaker 8: for the Cubs for to say, the Rangers, just because
- 8:02Speaker 8: I mean, you're playing for the Cubs for a team.
- 8:05Speaker 4: It's just like I.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Think that's like a pretty like fair assessment, like like
- 8:09Speaker 5: put it this way. So I actually got drafted by
- 8:11Speaker 5: Texas by the Rangers in ninety five, came to the
- 8:14Speaker 5: ballpark at Arlington, like a nineteen ninety six pre spring training,
- 8:17Speaker 5: you know, rookie development thing, and like I had the
- 8:21Speaker 5: license plate cover and the bad I was gonna be
- 8:23Speaker 5: Texas Ranger for like I'm pretty sure had a necklace
- 8:24Speaker 5: that said Rangers on it, you know, like everything was
- 8:26Speaker 5: going to be Rangers. And I got traded and then
- 8:28Speaker 5: I was with the Marlins and everything, and I made
- 8:30Speaker 5: my first start at Wrigley and I walked into Wrigley Field.
- 8:35Speaker 5: It was June first, nineteen ninety eight. And after the game,
- 8:38Speaker 5: I called my and I got rocked. I didn't make
- 8:41Speaker 5: it out of the second inning. And I called my
- 8:42Speaker 5: parents and I called my dad and I said, I
- 8:44Speaker 5: am going to play for the Chicago Cubs. Like this,
- 8:47Speaker 5: this is different. This is different than other places.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You know, would that be like Chicago, Saint Louis, Boston,
- 8:53Speaker 2: those we think of, like those foundational baseball cities. Would
- 8:56Speaker 2: it feel like that in all of those places or
- 8:59Speaker 2: only the teams were good.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it was maybe just the energy of
- 9:04Speaker 5: Wrigley that really got me, you know what I mean,
- 9:06Speaker 5: like and like the fans like you walk in. You know.
- 9:09Speaker 5: I took a cab to the ballpark and then I
- 9:11Speaker 5: kind of got the cab driver to let me out
- 9:12Speaker 5: a couple of blocks before so you could kind of
- 9:14Speaker 5: walk and just check it out. I'd heard, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 5: about Wrigley and and just like the vibe around it,
- 9:20Speaker 5: like there's no other ballpark like that in the country
- 9:22Speaker 5: where you got all four streets or something's happening in
- 9:25Speaker 5: every corner. Something like even at Fenway you got yaku
- 9:27Speaker 5: Wa or whatever it's called now, but they you know,
- 9:29Speaker 5: it's it's not like that. It's it's just different there,
- 9:32Speaker 5: and and you know.
- 9:34Speaker 4: People try to duplicate it, but you can't. Like no,
- 9:37Speaker 4: it's like it's incredible.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Yeah, and I played it, you know, I played at
- 9:41Speaker 5: Fenway too and played for the Red Sox and it
- 9:43Speaker 5: was amazing in its own way, But it wasn't Wrigly.
- 9:45Speaker 5: It was There's just something about it you can't I
- 9:49Speaker 5: guess time maybe is why it's it feels that way.
- 9:52Speaker 5: I think the.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Fans there right yeah, and all I went to watch
- 9:56Speaker 2: the Cubs when they when they beat the Indians, massive
- 9:58Speaker 2: cups tame a whole life. So I was like, I
- 10:00Speaker 2: gotta go up. The Cubs are in the World Series
- 10:02Speaker 2: first times.
- 10:02Speaker 3: It's forty five. I had one to since eight. Yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 3: Like there were people that were generation before me that
- 10:07Speaker 3: never got to see the Cubs even in a World Series.
- 10:10Speaker 3: So I'm like, I gotta go. So I had to
- 10:11Speaker 3: watch and play the Indians a game too. They lost.
- 10:13Speaker 2: However, I've never seen Wrigley as packed to the gills
- 10:16Speaker 2: where you couldn't moved, or Wrigglelyville and everybody's so happy. Yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I've never been somewhere so crowded where everyone was just
- 10:24Speaker 2: impure like enjoyment because of where they were that day
- 10:29Speaker 2: and how rare it was. The darkest years with the Cubs.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Was you? Yeah? Were you playing day game with a
- 10:36Speaker 5: lot of days, a lot of day games? Yeah?
- 10:38Speaker 3: Man, a bad season in a day game that would be.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Terrible, especially if for someone who liked to go out
- 10:41Speaker 5: and have a good time at night, you know, and
- 10:43Speaker 5: day games were tough to get up.
- 10:44Speaker 3: You know what time you have to get there for
- 10:46Speaker 3: day games.
- 10:47Speaker 5: I would say I was. I'm kind of a limited
- 10:49Speaker 5: sleep guy anyways, and I'm an early riser, and I'm
- 10:51Speaker 5: a first guy at the ballpark type thing. So if
- 10:54Speaker 5: you know we're playing a one to twenty game, I
- 10:55Speaker 5: was usually rolling into Reglarly about eight thirty, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 5: really Yeah, So I'd walk in and Kent Murcury would
- 11:01Speaker 5: already have the crossword down. He'd be sipping his coffee
- 11:03Speaker 5: and rode his bike already. He's like the first guy
- 11:05Speaker 5: the ballpark every day.
- 11:06Speaker 3: If you get there first, do you get control of
- 11:08Speaker 3: the music in the clubhouse?
- 11:09Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, or the starting pitcher that day, which is
- 11:12Speaker 5: which is funny because the starting picture rarely hangs out
- 11:15Speaker 5: in the clubhouse, yet they have control of the music.
- 11:18Speaker 5: You know, like all the position players are like, is
- 11:19Speaker 5: he gone? He's gone? Right, he got put on something else.
- 11:22Speaker 5: You know.
- 11:23Speaker 2: You mentioned the Marlins that that was quite a staff
- 11:26Speaker 2: when you're with the Marlins just generally speaking, because they were.
- 11:29Speaker 5: The whole team. Yeah, I look at like the I said,
- 11:32Speaker 5: there should be a documentary. I mean, you get called
- 11:34Speaker 5: the ninety eight Marlins, maybe just ninety eight, ninety nine Marlins.
- 11:37Speaker 5: If you look at that team, I don't think that
- 11:40Speaker 5: there's ever been a team, not since, but like I
- 11:45Speaker 5: don't even know if you could find one before where
- 11:47Speaker 5: you had that many rookies who went on to have
- 11:50Speaker 5: super successful careers in the big leagues, like careers, not
- 11:53Speaker 5: jobs in the big leagues. The didn't play for four
- 11:54Speaker 5: years of fibers. I'm talking. Guys are full pensioned. You know,
- 11:57Speaker 5: all stars, you know, were serious champions. When you go
- 12:01Speaker 5: down the list of Mike Lowell at third base, Alex
- 12:03Speaker 5: Gonzalis at short stop, Louis Castillo at second base, Kevin
- 12:06Speaker 5: Malaran Derectly at first or Kevin and left field, Mark
- 12:09Speaker 5: Cottze you know who's now managing in the big leagues,
- 12:12Speaker 5: and Preston Wilson and Mike Redmand behind the plate, myself,
- 12:15Speaker 5: Brad Penny A. J Burnett, you know, Josh Beckett after
- 12:18Speaker 5: you know, my last year there, like you it's crazy
- 12:21Speaker 5: like and it was all and we were all the
- 12:22Speaker 5: same time. Like when we had rookie dress up, there
- 12:25Speaker 5: was more guys dressed up than not dressed up. Like
- 12:27Speaker 5: we wore diapers and bonnets and stuff to Montreal through
- 12:32Speaker 5: customs and the customers was like, what is this? You know,
- 12:34Speaker 5: it's like those are the rookies. The one guy goes
- 12:36Speaker 5: all rookies, you know, like, yeah, man, we had a
- 12:39Speaker 5: lot of us, but it all it all worked out.
- 12:41Speaker 5: I think we all learned how to lose together and
- 12:42Speaker 5: then we figured out how to win together.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I got like Beckett, I'm just for memory. Was he
- 12:46Speaker 3: a Texas kid? Yeah, like came heart throwing Texas kid.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Yep.
- 12:50Speaker 2: You know, had was known as a kid with gas
- 12:53Speaker 2: when he came up. Yeah, when he comes up, I
- 12:55Speaker 2: would be cocky as crap. Yeah, if I were put up.
- 12:58Speaker 2: He was the cockiest guy that ever came up to
- 12:59Speaker 2: the big leagues.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Early.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Yeah, well he came out in the he got rode
- 13:03Speaker 5: hard by Alex Fernandez in ninety eight. He gets he's
- 13:06Speaker 5: getting drafted, and he comes out and says that he's
- 13:09Speaker 5: going to be the Marlins representative for the All Star
- 13:11Speaker 5: Game the next year after being drafted.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Not as a joke, No, he was just full of confidence.
- 13:17Speaker 3: And what's the fine line there?
- 13:18Speaker 2: Because obviously you know wide receiver, you drop the ball,
- 13:21Speaker 2: you got a defensive back, you let pitcher. You can't
- 13:24Speaker 2: let your next outing effect. You know what happened here?
- 13:27Speaker 2: What's the fine line in confident and cocky with a pitcher.
- 13:31Speaker 5: That was good. That was with Joshua was a really
- 13:33Speaker 5: fine line. And I like josh a lot. But he
- 13:36Speaker 5: got he got. He came into the locker room in
- 13:38Speaker 5: Houston and Alex Fernandez let him have it, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 5: and like, you know, hey, guys, grab your seat on
- 13:43Speaker 5: the bus. We can't afford a plane because we gave
- 13:45Speaker 5: our al Star next year all this money, you know. Like, yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 5: it was honestly, it was a little over the line.
- 13:50Speaker 5: I felt like, you know, like, but like I did
- 13:53Speaker 5: admire Josh's confidence, Like I I was a guy who
- 13:57Speaker 5: did not feel like I deserve to be in the
- 13:59Speaker 5: big I didn't deserve to be in the big leagues
- 14:00Speaker 5: when I first got there, Like I was a byproduct
- 14:02Speaker 5: of the Marlins trading everybody away and like, oh, we're
- 14:05Speaker 5: going to trade all these guys and bring up a
- 14:06Speaker 5: bunch of guys from Double A, you know, and learn
- 14:09Speaker 5: at the big league level. So I wasn't ready, whereas
- 14:11Speaker 5: he believed at high school level that he could strike
- 14:14Speaker 5: out Barry Bonce.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Let's go at what age did you start to be
- 14:17Speaker 2: someone that people started to put eyes on as either
- 14:20Speaker 2: because you played baseball Canada, right, Yeah, at what age
- 14:24Speaker 2: did scouts start to look at you and take you seriously?
- 14:27Speaker 5: I would say sixteen, fifteen sixteen, like you know, when
- 14:30Speaker 5: you're I'm from a super small town up there, and
- 14:32Speaker 5: I played baseball in West Vancouver at this little park
- 14:35Speaker 5: called Ambleside Park. And I remember the first scout, a
- 14:38Speaker 5: guy named bird Dog for the Texas Rangers who drafted me,
- 14:40Speaker 5: a guy named Don Sherry. And Don was like, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 5: this old kind of guy. You looked like you'd see
- 14:45Speaker 5: in like an extra and cheers sitting at the bar.
- 14:47Speaker 5: You know, you just sitting there all right, kid? You
- 14:49Speaker 5: got a good arm. You know you got a good arm.
- 14:51Speaker 5: You keep throwing that ball. And then next thing you know,
- 14:53Speaker 5: Jim Chapman was another scout for the Dodgers. He showed up,
- 14:55Speaker 5: and then these scouts started to show up. I got
- 14:57Speaker 5: a great picture. I'm like seventeen years old, my junior year,
- 15:01Speaker 5: and I'm throwing at Ambleside and my uncle, just as
- 15:03Speaker 5: a joke, went in with a hair dryer. There was
- 15:06Speaker 5: like thirteen scouts and they're all holding guns and he's
- 15:09Speaker 5: got a hair dryer, and they have no idea. It's
- 15:11Speaker 5: so great. Yeah, I have framed and everything. It's so awesome.
- 15:13Speaker 5: So yeah, and that's kind of when it just started
- 15:16Speaker 5: to steamroll. And then it was like playing for Team
- 15:18Speaker 5: Cannon in the World Junior Championships and then you're playing
- 15:20Speaker 5: against you know, US and Cuba and these really good
- 15:23Speaker 5: teams like and then you start to compete, and then
- 15:25Speaker 5: next thing you know, it was all right, here we go,
- 15:27Speaker 5: it's happening.
- 15:28Speaker 2: How many pitches did you think you have versus how
- 15:29Speaker 2: many pitches did they tell you you had they could
- 15:31Speaker 2: translate to the next level.
- 15:33Speaker 5: They told me I had one my fastball, but I
- 15:37Speaker 5: had I had a good break and by no change
- 15:39Speaker 5: up whatsoever. I didn't have a change up in the
- 15:40Speaker 5: big leagues until really a true, good, effective change up
- 15:44Speaker 5: until post Tommy John and Fergy Jenkins taught me on
- 15:48Speaker 5: the backfield in two thousand and four, I think two
- 15:51Speaker 5: thousand and five spring training.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And how long until you actually can feel comfortable throwing
- 15:55Speaker 2: that in a game?
- 15:56Speaker 5: Pretty quick? It was a weird thing, Like I'm not kidding.
- 15:59Speaker 5: I was walking to the back field of spring training
- 16:01Speaker 5: of two thousand and five, I was getting ready to
- 16:02Speaker 5: throw a bullpen. I'd come back in two thousand and four,
- 16:06Speaker 5: and and Fergy was like, hey, I just stopped him,
- 16:11Speaker 5: and I knew he had a pretty decent changeable, although
- 16:13Speaker 5: he didn't throw it a lot when he was pitching.
- 16:15Speaker 5: He was mostly basketball breaking ball because he had such
- 16:17Speaker 5: a good command. And I said, how did you throw
- 16:19Speaker 5: your change up? I mean, I could write a book
- 16:20Speaker 5: on change up grips. I tried the Trevor Hoffman fosch,
- 16:22Speaker 5: I tried the circle change. I tried turning stuff over.
- 16:25Speaker 5: I tried everything, and he said, oh, just grab it
- 16:27Speaker 5: like this, and it was kind of like a split
- 16:28Speaker 5: change where you would put it's like a split finger fastball,
- 16:31Speaker 5: but your finger would be up like a circle change.
- 16:33Speaker 5: And then my other three fingers came up on the
- 16:35Speaker 5: side of the ball, so it was like this vulcan grip.
- 16:37Speaker 5: And I get up to the backfield and Larry Rothschild's
- 16:39Speaker 5: a pitching coach, and I go, uh, I got a pitch.
- 16:41Speaker 5: I think I'm gonna try and throw. And he was
- 16:43Speaker 5: kind of a little hesitating because I was coming off
- 16:45Speaker 5: Tommy John you know, the year before. And he was like,
- 16:47Speaker 5: all right, and I throw it and it just goes
- 16:50Speaker 5: and he's just like whoa, yes, one hundred percent. I
- 16:54Speaker 5: was like, uh, I would throw that again, straight down
- 16:58Speaker 5: and I'm like, oh, something here, and then you know,
- 17:02Speaker 5: because of the grip, it was at times that you know,
- 17:04Speaker 5: I could sail off on me, but they just became
- 17:06Speaker 5: a super effective pitch and I and he just said,
- 17:09Speaker 5: don't lose your arm at arm speed on that throw
- 17:11Speaker 5: at that arm speed, and it became honestly probably extended
- 17:14Speaker 5: my career eight years. Who knows, like it was that effective?
- 17:17Speaker 3: Would you try to throw it in simulated games? Do
- 17:18Speaker 3: they simulate games?
- 17:19Speaker 5: Yeah? Oh yeah, yeah, and just throwing it like insides
- 17:22Speaker 5: throwing it and then and then what I did was
- 17:24Speaker 5: kind of like spring training, right. Although we like to
- 17:27Speaker 5: like think that it's so important if our team wins
- 17:30Speaker 5: or loses when we go to those games, like you know,
- 17:32Speaker 5: it's unfortunately that's how it is now. Guys paid seventy
- 17:35Speaker 5: five bucks to go to a spring training game, and
- 17:36Speaker 5: it's like, my team's got to win, you know, Plus
- 17:38Speaker 5: we can bet on it. So it's like, you know,
- 17:40Speaker 5: I can't, but you know people can of course. But
- 17:43Speaker 5: and so back back then you could kind of get
- 17:46Speaker 5: away with having some freedom to hone your craft without
- 17:51Speaker 5: any anybody, Karen. So I was like, I'm just gonna
- 17:54Speaker 5: throw a start and just throw splits like the whole game,
- 17:58Speaker 5: you know. So it was like, okay, So I probably
- 18:00Speaker 5: I threw two or three innings in a spring training game,
- 18:02Speaker 5: and I say I threw fifty pitches. I betch you
- 18:04Speaker 5: I had threw forty split fingerpass paying.
- 18:06Speaker 3: And even if you're getting crushed.
- 18:08Speaker 5: I wasn't. And then I wasn't getting crushed. It was like, oh,
- 18:11Speaker 5: this is a really really good pitch, you know, and
- 18:13Speaker 5: it helped me neutralize lefties especially.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I'll watch a lot of Charlie Huff knuckleball videos, yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 2: because he's mean, he's six or seventies now and he's
- 18:21Speaker 2: still showing these kids how to throw knuckleballs.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Knuckleball kind of a lost art, you know.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I mean, for me, probably Wakefield was the last guy
- 18:27Speaker 2: that I saw do it effectively.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Was he the last guy to do it effectively?
- 18:30Speaker 5: Yeah? He was the last. I mean there was a
- 18:31Speaker 5: couple of guys that came through, like you know, ra.
- 18:34Speaker 3: A Dickey and right Dicky.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Yeah, but like but like even I mean, wake was
- 18:39Speaker 5: pitching up till our finished pitching like pretty much you know,
- 18:41Speaker 5: so like Wake was the the elite after Charlie Huff.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And I'll show I'll watch Huff just show these kids
- 18:48Speaker 2: how to throw a knuckleball three inches right, And it's
- 18:50Speaker 2: like you throw at three inches and then slowly back
- 18:52Speaker 2: away from it. So these kids are going to this
- 18:54Speaker 2: camp and they're learning how to throw knuckleballs. If you
- 18:57Speaker 2: would have learned to have thrown a knuckleball, could you
- 18:59Speaker 2: have tried to throw it in the game?
- 19:00Speaker 3: Did you ever try? Nothing balls at all?
- 19:02Speaker 5: No shot? I don't know what it was. I couldn't
- 19:04Speaker 5: just like it's spun, just came out of my hands
- 19:06Speaker 5: and tumbled, you know. I don't know if it was
- 19:08Speaker 5: my arm action. You know. I was a big slider guy,
- 19:11Speaker 5: so it was like always you know, with my wrists,
- 19:13Speaker 5: so it's hard for me to lock my wrist and
- 19:14Speaker 5: not turn it. The minute you go like that, it's
- 19:16Speaker 5: going to just start going to hold your wrist still
- 19:19Speaker 5: is like the most important thing. And I just I
- 19:21Speaker 5: didn't have that in me and never never really tried.
- 19:23Speaker 5: After that. I'd goop around playing catch, but yeah, it
- 19:26Speaker 5: was a thing that if I could have I would
- 19:28Speaker 5: have no doubt, Like effective if you can throw for
- 19:30Speaker 5: strikes with throwing.
- 19:32Speaker 2: And I'm gonna ask about and not the controversial part
- 19:35Speaker 2: of this, but I was watching a video with Trevor
- 19:36Speaker 2: Bauer talking about practicing and throwing constantly and then throwing
- 19:41Speaker 2: less during a game, and he's like, if you throw
- 19:43Speaker 2: all the time, you'll be stronger.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Therefore you are won't be sore.
- 19:46Speaker 2: But then also like the Strasburg effect where it's like
- 19:49Speaker 2: with Strasburg, the one that started limiting how many pitches
- 19:51Speaker 2: a pitcher could throw. Over where do you fall on
- 19:53Speaker 2: how much a pitcher should actually throw? Because I'm listening
- 19:55Speaker 2: to two different guys who have been successful tell me
- 19:58Speaker 2: two different things.
- 20:00Speaker 5: I tend to lead towards what You'rever's saying. I think
- 20:04Speaker 5: if you think about it, like when we were kids,
- 20:05Speaker 5: and when we were growing up and we were playing baseball,
- 20:08Speaker 5: very few kids got a sore arm. There might have
- 20:10Speaker 5: been one pitcher on the team like, oh he heard
- 20:12Speaker 5: his arm. We played catch all the time. We didn't
- 20:14Speaker 5: need an organized practice, we didn't need an organized game,
- 20:18Speaker 5: we didn't need travel ball, none of that stuff. We
- 20:19Speaker 5: just went and played catch with a bunch of kids
- 20:21Speaker 5: in the park and we just threw and threw and threw,
- 20:23Speaker 5: and we played five hundred up and you played Cherry,
- 20:25Speaker 5: you know, I don't know if you were played Cherry
- 20:27Speaker 5: where guy has a bat and then you go out
- 20:29Speaker 5: the outfield the guy you catch the ball in the air,
- 20:31Speaker 5: then you throw it and you try to hit the bat,
- 20:34Speaker 5: you know, and it hits the bat and goes over
- 20:36Speaker 5: the bat and lands on the ground. Now you switch positions,
- 20:39Speaker 5: and I'd play this for well, we're throwing it two
- 20:41Speaker 5: hundred feet, you know, like long toss. I look at
- 20:45Speaker 5: look at all of like the premiere relievers of fifty
- 20:49Speaker 5: last fifty years, all of those guys, all of those closers,
- 20:52Speaker 5: all of those set up guys, all those guys who
- 20:53Speaker 5: had long careers, longevity careers, they all long tossed every
- 20:57Speaker 5: single day. You watch them Like Jose may Man, that dude.
- 21:00Speaker 5: I watched that dude long toss like nobody else ever
- 21:02Speaker 5: in the big leagues. Dude three hundred feet every day
- 21:06Speaker 5: they needed him, he was ready. He never was on
- 21:07Speaker 5: the deal never, you know, And I think that we
- 21:11Speaker 5: we are limiting. We're taking cars, fancy shiny Lamborghinis and
- 21:17Speaker 5: Ferraris and everything, and instead of taking him out for
- 21:19Speaker 5: a ride on the freeway. We're like, just in the
- 21:21Speaker 5: driveway real quick, and then we take it on the freeway. Man,
- 21:24Speaker 5: it broke. That's weird because we asked it to go
- 21:26Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty real fast and it hasn't done
- 21:28Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty. Like minor leagues let him pitch.
- 21:30Speaker 5: They pitch four innings and they're like, good job, good job.
- 21:32Speaker 5: And then they get to the big leagues and we
- 21:33Speaker 5: have to take them out with no hitters because they're
- 21:36Speaker 5: not extended. Like, don't tell me it doesn't work. It's
- 21:39Speaker 5: a lie. It's a fabricated lie. It works. Steve Carlton
- 21:42Speaker 5: through two hundred and fifty innings for twenty years. Nolan
- 21:44Speaker 5: Ryan threw for twenty seven years in the big leagues,
- 21:47Speaker 5: you know, like and hard and hard. Yeah, he's throwing
- 21:50Speaker 5: one hundred at forty five years old. Like, come on,
- 21:53Speaker 5: it works. We have sat there and thinks that we
- 21:56Speaker 5: can predict at injuries and we can't. Some guys, you know,
- 22:00Speaker 5: they're the reason that they're getting drafted tonight, you know,
- 22:03Speaker 5: and because they're the best young talent in the world.
- 22:05Speaker 5: So like you have Clydesdale's, you have these show ponies,
- 22:08Speaker 5: you know, and don't just walk them around the yard.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Let them run, let them go. Man. I feel like
- 22:12Speaker 5: if I could ever have control, it never would happen
- 22:15Speaker 5: because today and not in today's game, they're not gonna
- 22:18Speaker 5: let an ex player run the minor league system. But
- 22:20Speaker 5: give me the pitchers. I'll develop. I'll build you horses
- 22:23Speaker 5: number ones and number two's and the other guys. Sorry,
- 22:25Speaker 5: if you can't make it, you can't make it. Guess what.
- 22:27Speaker 3: It's hard.
- 22:28Speaker 5: It's the big leagues. There's not another league on the
- 22:31Speaker 5: moon that we can go to play at, not yet anyways.
- 22:33Speaker 5: Elon's working on that. But like you know, it's it's
- 22:36Speaker 5: the truth. So yeah, throw more, you don't get hurt.
- 22:38Speaker 5: It's the truth.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Before I get to the Cups questions and Nolan Ryan
- 22:41Speaker 2: question since you brought them up, they would talk about
- 22:44Speaker 2: gunning Nolan Ryan back in the day, still one hundred
- 22:46Speaker 2: and one oh one. But if it was he was
- 22:47Speaker 2: gun today, it'd be like one oh seven one oh eight.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Just at what the guns can do now versus where
- 22:52Speaker 2: they shot from. You think Nolan Ryan could throw a
- 22:53Speaker 2: hundred seven hundred.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Eight Yeah, I think, you know, I think outside of
- 22:58Speaker 5: Steve del Kowski's the hardest thrower ever. You know, I
- 23:02Speaker 5: don't know if you know about Steve Delkowski. There's a
- 23:04Speaker 5: left handed pitcher.
- 23:05Speaker 3: About your size, Well, I mean I'm pretty big.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Yeah, little, I mean little?
- 23:09Speaker 5: Well, just how are you? I'm six two? How tall
- 23:12Speaker 5: are you? Six? Okay?
- 23:13Speaker 3: But I feel like I feel like you think he's
- 23:15Speaker 3: like five eight?
- 23:16Speaker 5: He thought? No, no, no, I thought you. I say
- 23:17Speaker 5: he was under six feet. I thought you were maybe
- 23:19Speaker 5: like five to eleven.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what he is.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Okay, you're right. It wasn't a knock on your hand.
- 23:23Speaker 5: I'm just saying.
- 23:23Speaker 3: It was like, you know, but he's ripping like me though,
- 23:25Speaker 3: Yeah he's ripped.
- 23:26Speaker 5: Yeah, com clearly Jackie Man. But he would he would
- 23:29Speaker 5: throw games in them. If you look up his minor
- 23:30Speaker 5: league stats, it's pretty amazing. But he was. He was
- 23:32Speaker 5: a guy that was throwing one hundred and seven hundred
- 23:34Speaker 5: eight miles an hour and the and when you talk
- 23:35Speaker 5: to people who watched him pitch, they're like, and he
- 23:38Speaker 5: was left handed with the orioles like he would throw
- 23:40Speaker 5: games nine innings, lose six to four, you know, walk ten,
- 23:44Speaker 5: strikeout seventeen, Like these couldn't hit it. But Nolan Ryan
- 23:47Speaker 5: was the same way it was. You know, guys said
- 23:50Speaker 5: it was his fastball just disappeared, like you know, I
- 23:53Speaker 5: got to see him pitch live when he was later
- 23:56Speaker 5: in his career, but I never got to see it,
- 23:58Speaker 5: you know, firsthand and stuff like that. But it was different.
- 24:02Speaker 5: It was just it was by you. Like you don't
- 24:05Speaker 5: have the most no hitters, the most one hitters, the
- 24:07Speaker 5: most two hitters, the most three hitters, strikeout a thousand
- 24:11Speaker 5: more batters than second place. Like I saw a stat
- 24:14Speaker 5: the other day like somebody could strike out, you know,
- 24:16Speaker 5: two hundred batters a year for twenty years and still
- 24:18Speaker 5: be seventeen hundred strike I was short of Noel Ryant, like,
- 24:21Speaker 5: you don't do that unless you throw harder than everybody else.
- 24:25Speaker 5: And I think he I think he sat at one
- 24:27Speaker 5: hundred and he probably ticked it up to one oh
- 24:30Speaker 5: five one oh six if he needed it, and maybe harder.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Who knows, there's rumors he threw one oh eight, you know,
- 24:34Speaker 5: like I wouldn't doubt it.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Do you feel like you're a cub?
- 24:37Speaker 5: Yeah? Nine years yeah, I mean it's long, yeah, and
- 24:41Speaker 5: post right, so like post playing, I saw THEO brought
- 24:44Speaker 5: me over as a special assistant for the front office,
- 24:46Speaker 5: So really have been with the organization for over twenty years.
- 24:50Speaker 5: So yeah, for sure.
- 24:51Speaker 2: When you go directly played first when you were there, right, Yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 2: but you you work with him in Florida, am we
- 24:56Speaker 2: played twelve years together.
- 24:57Speaker 3: So was he there but a year before or do
- 25:00Speaker 3: you guys go at the.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Same time, same time?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Okay, so you didn't. Did you have.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Anybody there that you already knew when you went to
- 25:05Speaker 2: Chicago that kind of when you go to an organization
- 25:07Speaker 2: like that, or do you even need someone to kind
- 25:08Speaker 2: of tell you about the culture, what the fans are, Like.
- 25:12Speaker 5: No, I knew, and like at that point in my career,
- 25:14Speaker 5: you know, I was I'd been in the big leagues
- 25:16Speaker 5: for five years, six years now, so it was like, oh,
- 25:19Speaker 5: and I knew like I played with Kent Merker in
- 25:21Speaker 5: Cincinnati the year before or two years before that.
- 25:23Speaker 3: You played them a lot, So you were in Chicago
- 25:25Speaker 3: a lot.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Too, Yeah, and playing the Cubs and then I, you know,
- 25:27Speaker 5: I knew carry a little bit just across the field,
- 25:29Speaker 5: and it was Paul Bocco and I played together in Florida,
- 25:33Speaker 5: So there was like these little tie ins and I'd
- 25:36Speaker 5: went to Japan with Mike Gremliner and I knew a
- 25:39Speaker 5: few guys and so it was easy. And then just
- 25:42Speaker 5: an easy transition played against Greg Greg could come back.
- 25:44Speaker 2: And oh four my first year over there, to see
- 25:47Speaker 2: Dusty Bakers still be successful, I mean, to win with
- 25:50Speaker 2: another World Series. What was Dusty Baker like as a
- 25:53Speaker 2: manager then, and then you're still so a part of
- 25:56Speaker 2: Major League Baseball?
- 25:57Speaker 3: Is he the same Dusty Baker now as he was
- 25:59Speaker 3: in Yeah?
- 26:00Speaker 5: That's I think That's what I loved about him so
- 26:02Speaker 5: much was he really did care about you the person.
- 26:05Speaker 5: You know, Like he'd call you up to the office
- 26:06Speaker 5: dust he wants to see and you go in there
- 26:07Speaker 5: and he would just be like, how's everything at home?
- 26:09Speaker 5: Everything good? How's your mom and dad doing? You know,
- 26:13Speaker 5: like to me personally, Like I know some guys that
- 26:15Speaker 5: doesn't matter to them, but for me, that mattered a lot.
- 26:17Speaker 5: You know, I'm a big family guy. You know, I'm tight.
- 26:20Speaker 5: I'm tight with all my guys I went to high
- 26:21Speaker 5: school with. Like that kind of relationship stuff was really important.
- 26:24Speaker 5: So he was really great about that, just like always
- 26:28Speaker 5: like that. And then you know, just just Carrid and
- 26:30Speaker 5: wanted to win and wanted to do what it meant.
- 26:32Speaker 5: It meant a lot to him, and yeah, just a
- 26:34Speaker 5: great man. I was really happy for him because it
- 26:37Speaker 5: was like the one thing that was hanging over him
- 26:39Speaker 5: for the Hall of Fame was, oh, you know, I
- 26:40Speaker 5: didn't won the World Series. I didn't won the World
- 26:42Speaker 5: Series and been closed so many times, and so for
- 26:44Speaker 5: him to finally get it, you know, and to do
- 26:46Speaker 5: it at his age, to show you that experience does matter,
- 26:48Speaker 5: a little bit of that does matter was really important.
- 26:51Speaker 5: So yeah, really really awesome dude.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Guys like Carrie Wood and Mark Pryor who came up
- 26:56Speaker 2: and have high expectations but real big success early on.
- 27:02Speaker 3: What do you think happened to those guys?
- 27:04Speaker 5: I think that well, you know both right, there's there's
- 27:10Speaker 5: there's the injury factor and I can't even imagine, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 5: Like I'm close with Carrie and for him to strike
- 27:19Speaker 5: out twenty and your six start in the big leagues,
- 27:22Speaker 5: you know, it's like where do you go from there?
- 27:25Speaker 5: The expectations from a fan base, like every single time
- 27:27Speaker 5: he was taking them ount it was like, you know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: people in the bleachers with handfuls of K cards because
- 27:32Speaker 5: he's going to strike out twenty again, and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 27:34Speaker 5: good game, man, you only had thirteen today. You know.
- 27:37Speaker 5: It was like striking out thirteen's hard, you know. So
- 27:40Speaker 5: I think he had probably bigger expectations than Mark did.
- 27:45Speaker 5: And and Mark, I mean, everything was going great and
- 27:48Speaker 5: then he ran over Marcus Giles at second in between
- 27:51Speaker 5: first and second base and landed on his shoulder, and
- 27:53Speaker 5: then I don't think he was just ever the same
- 27:55Speaker 5: after that. I think he would say the same thing,
- 27:57Speaker 5: you know, it was hard to kind of come back
- 27:58Speaker 5: from that, started to deal for the first time in
- 28:00Speaker 5: his life really with any kind of arm issues or
- 28:03Speaker 5: any kind of injuries, and then just not able to
- 28:06Speaker 5: fully come back from it, and then had a surgery
- 28:07Speaker 5: and then just wasn't able to come back from it.
- 28:09Speaker 5: But like, yeah, like you're talking generational talent, like Paul
- 28:12Speaker 5: Skeene's type talent coming in different right, Like like Mark
- 28:17Speaker 5: Durosa tells a great story about carry Wood pitching. He's
- 28:20Speaker 5: with Atlanta in nineteen ninety Sorry, in two thousand and three,
- 28:24Speaker 5: in Game five in Atlanta of the Division Series before
- 28:28Speaker 5: they went to the NLCS, Chipper Jones goes and hits
- 28:31Speaker 5: in the first inning off carry Wood and de Ro's like,
- 28:35Speaker 5: you know, I'm super excited. We're in game five, like
- 28:37Speaker 5: I might get a pinch hit but get bad or something.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Chipper punches out against Kerry and then comes in the dugout.
- 28:43Speaker 5: He's putting his helmet in his bad away. He looks
- 28:44Speaker 5: at Dero goes, hey, dude, we're going home today. Like
- 28:48Speaker 5: that's how electric his shit goes, you know, pretty awesome.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Were there guys that you felt like.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I love pitching against this guy because our mixture is
- 28:58Speaker 2: that my mixture usually does better.
- 29:00Speaker 3: I know other guys will be like, man, this guy's
- 29:01Speaker 3: gonna crush.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Me like hit or wise. Yeah yeah, yeah, oh yeah,
- 29:04Speaker 5: Like for like it's crazy, Like it's funny how that
- 29:06Speaker 5: matches up. Like take take a guy like Joe Mauer.
- 29:10Speaker 5: At one point, Joe was oh for seven with six strikeouts.
- 29:13Speaker 5: How's that even possible? Right, Like like.
- 29:15Speaker 3: One of the best hitters, yeah, who never struck out.
- 29:18Speaker 5: I struck him out three times in a game. He
- 29:19Speaker 5: did that like five times in his career, Like you know,
- 29:22Speaker 5: but then like you know, Fred McGriff just like dragged
- 29:26Speaker 5: me around the room like whatever he wanted. To do
- 29:28Speaker 5: with me. You know, it was like just double in
- 29:30Speaker 5: the gap, double the gap, home run laser, you know.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Perfect to be, like even arm placement, like where you're
- 29:35Speaker 2: throwing the ball from where.
- 29:36Speaker 5: I asked him and he said that that for whatever reason,
- 29:39Speaker 5: he's like, you know, like all the guys in the
- 29:40Speaker 5: team would be like, dudes, don't let him get to
- 29:42Speaker 5: his slider. His slider's nasty. And he's like, I just
- 29:44Speaker 5: your slider just came right into my bat path and like,
- 29:48Speaker 5: you know, even like I just saw it out of
- 29:50Speaker 5: your hand, and some guys just don't pick it up
- 29:51Speaker 5: and some guys do. And you know him, Luis Gonzalez.
- 29:55Speaker 5: Mostly lefties, not a lot of Righty's kind of raked me.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Doug Landville hit me pretty good, surprisingly enough, but yeah
- 30:02Speaker 5: there was there was a few like Barry Bonds never
- 30:04Speaker 5: took me deep, but he went six for ten. Yeah,
- 30:06Speaker 5: we're in San Francisco. Is a good one. And Barry's
- 30:10Speaker 5: like in Berry, like prime Berry. You know, he's just
- 30:13Speaker 5: going up to the plate like not even gonna hit
- 30:15Speaker 5: because nobody's all I think he was walked two hundred
- 30:17Speaker 5: and thirty times or something. And Kevin Malar was my
- 30:20Speaker 5: teammate at the time, and I'm in San France. I'm
- 30:22Speaker 5: getting ready to go out at the bottom of the
- 30:23Speaker 5: first sitting and I'm going up the steps and i
- 30:25Speaker 5: just feel my like jersey pull back and I'm like,
- 30:27Speaker 5: turn around. He goes, you don't got a harrow in
- 30:29Speaker 5: your ass if you don't find out what you got
- 30:31Speaker 5: against Barry Bonds. I'm want four seam fastballs down the
- 30:33Speaker 5: middle as hard as you can find out. And I'm like, okay,
- 30:36Speaker 5: so I we did the priority number one. I got
- 30:39Speaker 5: to get the first two guys out, you know. So
- 30:41Speaker 5: I get the first two guys out. Here comes Barry.
- 30:42Speaker 1: You know.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Doctor J's like, man, Barry Bonds, old place going nuts.
- 30:47Speaker 5: And I'm laying on the mountain. I'm like I look
- 30:49Speaker 5: out left field and I'm like, all right, here we go,
- 30:51Speaker 5: you know. And I throw the first pitch ninety four
- 30:54Speaker 5: four seams center cut right down the middle, and all
- 30:56Speaker 5: of a sudden, Barry's like, oh, okay, hold on, you're
- 31:00Speaker 5: gonna you wanna play all right, you can do this,
- 31:03Speaker 5: you know. Then I throw another four seam fastball like
- 31:06Speaker 5: middle away fouls it back, and then I throw an
- 31:09Speaker 5: O two four seam fastball middle away again like ninety five,
- 31:12Speaker 5: and he tattoos it off the top corner of the
- 31:14Speaker 5: right field like wall that's up there like every other park.
- 31:18Speaker 5: It's a homer and then it carems for a triple
- 31:21Speaker 5: and I come in and Lar goes Man, you should
- 31:22Speaker 5: have got your stuff in Mexico, you know, like it
- 31:25Speaker 5: was just really funny. It was just like the best.
- 31:28Speaker 5: You were facing the best in the moment, and I
- 31:31Speaker 5: was like, all right, let me find out where my
- 31:32Speaker 5: stuff plays. And I not not against him. Nobody's good.
- 31:35Speaker 2: What do you ever have words with depending on who
- 31:37Speaker 2: was catching you, if you shook him off more than
- 31:40Speaker 2: once or twice? Was that ever an issue when you
- 31:42Speaker 2: got back in the dug out or in the clubhouse.
- 31:46Speaker 5: I don't think it was ever an issue. There was
- 31:48Speaker 5: definitely guys who were better to handle it, you know,
- 31:51Speaker 5: like some guys like you know, coming up right, like
- 31:54Speaker 5: Mike Redman was great, you know, he was really great
- 31:56Speaker 5: about why like more conversation, Charles Johnson like and I
- 32:00Speaker 5: just didn't think you should go with that pitch, you know.
- 32:02Speaker 5: And then you had guys like Cooy Hill, who is
- 32:05Speaker 5: a great catcher for us with the Cubs for a
- 32:07Speaker 5: few years. You know, like as far as like winning
- 32:10Speaker 5: ball games, a dude could frame throw attitude and like
- 32:13Speaker 5: sometimes you're shake and shake it and you just.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Go just whatever, just throw whatever.
- 32:18Speaker 5: I'm not gonna put any more fingers down, Like what
- 32:20Speaker 5: do you what do you want to throw? Already put
- 32:22Speaker 5: them around. He wants to go back to the fastball,
- 32:23Speaker 5: like throw it.
- 32:24Speaker 2: You know, how do you feel that communication now with
- 32:26Speaker 2: electronic communication?
- 32:28Speaker 5: I don't love it because I like it in the
- 32:31Speaker 5: sense of the speeding up the game and there's lights
- 32:33Speaker 5: of mountain visits and all those kind of things. I
- 32:36Speaker 5: just believe that that was part of it. Right, Like
- 32:40Speaker 5: we've slowly started to take things away from the mental side,
- 32:43Speaker 5: like cards to tell you where to stand. You know,
- 32:46Speaker 5: stand here because it's gonna happen. But although you know,
- 32:49Speaker 5: maybe on that moment it doesn't, you know, and you
- 32:50Speaker 5: get the tailor made double play ball in the second
- 32:52Speaker 5: basement standing on second base, you know, And I get it.
- 32:55Speaker 5: I understand the percentages and the data and all that
- 32:57Speaker 5: kind of stuff, but also like they're all it's all
- 33:02Speaker 5: great on a macro level, but every individual game and
- 33:05Speaker 5: every individual moment in the game is a micro level, right,
- 33:07Speaker 5: So like we can get to that data however we want.
- 33:10Speaker 5: We can have enough at bats to say that the
- 33:12Speaker 5: ball is going to hit it hitting the hole. But
- 33:13Speaker 5: like maybe today I got an extra zip on my fastball,
- 33:16Speaker 5: and so maybe that guy might not, you know, necessarily
- 33:18Speaker 5: be on time. He might be a little bit late.
- 33:19Speaker 5: Like Jason Hayward is one of the best in the league.
- 33:22Speaker 5: You watch him play a Shane Victorino when I play
- 33:24Speaker 5: with Vic in Boston, man, like you watch him. I
- 33:28Speaker 5: told Peter Gammons one time and if you're ever talking
- 33:30Speaker 5: to Peter asking about the story, and he did, and
- 33:31Speaker 5: he goes it was one of the coolest things is
- 33:33Speaker 5: I go, don't watch the pitcher, don't watch the hit
- 33:35Speaker 5: or nothing. Watch Shane Victoria play rightfield and watch him
- 33:38Speaker 5: move pitch to pitch like a chess game, dude, And
- 33:40Speaker 5: he's like, oh, it's one two, I'm going to take
- 33:42Speaker 5: three steps into my left so that the little bass
- 33:44Speaker 5: hit doesn't fall in because if if it's a double
- 33:46Speaker 5: in the gap, that's the pitcher's fall. But if it's
- 33:50Speaker 5: if it's a little blue pit that's going to fall
- 33:52Speaker 5: and that's my fault, I should be the one playing
- 33:54Speaker 5: for the executed pitch, you know. And so you know,
- 33:57Speaker 5: I think like with the pitch communication, like Sodo and
- 33:59Speaker 5: I would have, we would have innings where we didn't
- 34:01Speaker 5: even use he would use signs, and we never I
- 34:04Speaker 5: would catch the ball and turn to my left. I
- 34:06Speaker 5: want to fastball away. I catch the ball and like
- 34:08Speaker 5: as I catch it, I just put my hand to
- 34:10Speaker 5: catch it with my glove like this and then really casually.
- 34:12Speaker 5: And that means I want to high fastball, you know.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Like I call it plays some football.
- 34:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I would like catch a ball back and then
- 34:17Speaker 5: just like grab my belt real quick like and just
- 34:20Speaker 5: move like that. I want to split the hitter doesn't know,
- 34:24Speaker 5: especially if the hitters looking at the third base coach
- 34:25Speaker 5: or something. Nobody knows. Now, you do all the signs,
- 34:28Speaker 5: but they don't mean anything, you know, and so then
- 34:30Speaker 5: they could relay something and be wrong whatever it is. Like,
- 34:33Speaker 5: And I just think we've taken that away from guys.
- 34:35Speaker 5: You know, we got to do it. We're going to
- 34:36Speaker 5: tell you where a stand, you know, over there. Two steps? Okay,
- 34:39Speaker 5: back up, Tommy, Okay, come in Tommy, Like, come on, man,
- 34:41Speaker 5: they're girl men. Let him play. Yeah, let them figure
- 34:43Speaker 5: it out, you know, but we can't risk anything going wrong,
- 34:46Speaker 5: you know, and then it falls in and we're like,
- 34:48Speaker 5: well but yeah, but the card said we should be there,
- 34:50Speaker 5: so we were there and it didn't go there. So
- 34:53Speaker 5: at least the data. We played the data. But it's
- 34:55Speaker 5: like sometimes you got to play your heart, your eyes,
- 34:56Speaker 5: your sense, your smell whatever. It is. Like, man, that
- 34:59Speaker 5: guy I saw him last night at the bar and
- 35:00Speaker 5: he was wrecked. Bro, he is not on a heat.
- 35:03Speaker 3: That's not dad. There's no data.
- 35:05Speaker 5: No, you can't quantify it, you know.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Final four questions. So you mentioned Peter Gammon. Would you
- 35:10Speaker 2: ever finish a start and go watch like baseball tonight?
- 35:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah, watch you if you had a good one,
- 35:13Speaker 2: or would you avoid it if it was a bad one?
- 35:15Speaker 5: Well, if I came over to the Marlins, so it
- 35:17Speaker 5: was usually just a box score, you know, we were
- 35:19Speaker 5: on the Highlight reel and the Marlins one today, you know,
- 35:22Speaker 5: like but yeah, no, absolutely, and like I would always
- 35:25Speaker 5: I love that stuff, like even a replay, you know,
- 35:28Speaker 5: just to just to see it and kind of just
- 35:31Speaker 5: especially a good game, right the game, all sports, but
- 35:37Speaker 5: especially baseball, which is a highly built on failure. Like
- 35:41Speaker 5: you're going to fail a lot. You know, name out
- 35:45Speaker 5: other things in the world where you can fail seventy
- 35:47Speaker 5: percent of the time and be great, Like it's just
- 35:49Speaker 5: not really realistics. And so when you do have positive
- 35:52Speaker 5: things happen and you can reinforce that in your head
- 35:54Speaker 5: so you can walk in like Josh Beckett with your
- 35:56Speaker 5: chest boat out and be like, I'm a badass. You know,
- 35:58Speaker 5: I think is really important. You know, not necessarily in
- 36:01Speaker 5: the moment. I don't love the iPad in the game
- 36:03Speaker 5: where they let me let me see that, like because
- 36:05Speaker 5: in that moment you won't feel what did I feel
- 36:07Speaker 5: instead of what I see? But like afterwards when I'm
- 36:09Speaker 5: having an ice cool beer on my couch and be like, yeah, I.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Felt like I be like ravage, come on, put a
- 36:14Speaker 2: up more of a something to beat buddies with them
- 36:16Speaker 2: so they like, put some more of the highlight.
- 36:17Speaker 5: I finally struck out, Fred McGriff throw that up there.
- 36:19Speaker 4: You know, Broan, what was your lifestyle like traveling in
- 36:24Speaker 4: the majors hotels? You know, like, what what would you do?
- 36:28Speaker 4: There's a lot of downtime.
- 36:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a I'm a different bird. I will say
- 36:32Speaker 5: that I think if you talk to guys who played
- 36:34Speaker 5: with me, they can kind of agree. I highly encouraged
- 36:37Speaker 5: fun events, you know. I never said no to an opportunity.
- 36:41Speaker 5: You know, Like Kenny Chesty came into Chicago and he
- 36:46Speaker 5: was throwing off doing a concert and doing the stretch
- 36:49Speaker 5: and all that kind of stuff. And I popped up
- 36:51Speaker 5: in game in my in my uniform, you know, and
- 36:54Speaker 5: I into his suite with his dad and him, and
- 36:55Speaker 5: I'm sitting there in my uniform during the game. Yeah,
- 36:58Speaker 5: and he goes, uh say, hey, man, I ke you sing.
- 37:01Speaker 5: I go, well, I don't know what's Ken singing? And
- 37:03Speaker 5: he goes, we sing with me tonight. And I'm like,
- 37:05Speaker 5: at Soldier Field, Sure, So I went out and did
- 37:08Speaker 5: you know the opening two verses from back where I
- 37:11Speaker 5: come from at Solderfield from fifty seven thousand people Like,
- 37:14Speaker 5: That's how I lived my life always. So if it's
- 37:16Speaker 5: like there's a concert, I'm going, there's a hockey game,
- 37:18Speaker 5: I'm going, you want to practice with the team. Absolutely,
- 37:20Speaker 5: I'm a little bit like you, like you like to
- 37:22Speaker 5: experience all those things and do those things the same way.
- 37:25Speaker 5: At New York City, get off the bus. I didn't
- 37:28Speaker 5: go to my room, gave my bag to the clubhouse.
- 37:30Speaker 5: Guys had put that in my room. I'll see you later.
- 37:31Speaker 5: I'd go to Times Square till two in the morning,
- 37:33Speaker 5: walk around, experience see things, watch people play three carmonty,
- 37:36Speaker 5: you know, like if there was an event, I'm going
- 37:39Speaker 5: to go if you know. Like sometimes like I remember
- 37:41Speaker 5: David Ross and I being like, you know, walking around
- 37:43Speaker 5: New York three thirty in the morning and eating pizza.
- 37:45Speaker 5: He's like, what are we doing? I go, I don't
- 37:46Speaker 5: know how many times you go to New York three
- 37:48Speaker 5: thirty in the morning. Let's go. It's you know. And
- 37:50Speaker 5: I see guys like that had a different life, and
- 37:53Speaker 5: that's that's okay. We all have our own path. I
- 37:54Speaker 5: was very much my hotel room was sleeping and that
- 37:57Speaker 5: was it. I didn't hang out in my hotel room.
- 37:59Speaker 5: I got up golf, they got up and worked out.
- 38:01Speaker 5: I went paddle board and you know, in Detroit, and
- 38:04Speaker 5: Shelley's like, I'm picking up. We're going paddle board and
- 38:06Speaker 5: like all these different little things. I go out and
- 38:08Speaker 5: stay in Malibu when we're playing in la and go
- 38:11Speaker 5: surf with layered and you do all these things. Because
- 38:13Speaker 5: I just loved I love that. So that was like
- 38:16Speaker 5: how I was, you know, when I was playing my
- 38:19Speaker 5: whole entire career always Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Final two questions.
- 38:22Speaker 4: I wanted to ask you a question.
- 38:23Speaker 8: I'm very intrigued by the unwritten rules of baseball and
- 38:27Speaker 8: the enforcement of those things. And uh, let's this is
- 38:30Speaker 8: purely hypothetical. Let's say that you know a message has
- 38:33Speaker 8: to be sent to a guy, and maybe it's a
- 38:36Speaker 8: specific player, Like just hypothetically, this is the size of
- 38:39Speaker 8: somebody named Sammy Sos, Like Sammy Sos Yeah, and you
- 38:44Speaker 8: know they're like, hey, you know, Sammy's got to wear one.
- 38:47Speaker 8: I would have been like if I were a picture,
- 38:49Speaker 8: I'd be like, I'm trying it. Hit Craig Gray back it.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Was like five six, you know, and.
- 38:55Speaker 5: Careful with Walt Weiss though he's a tough guy.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Really see, I love thinking wrestler.
- 38:59Speaker 8: But like one, what goes through your mind when it's like, okay,
- 39:04Speaker 8: you were wanting me to face down a monster in
- 39:06Speaker 8: that scenario? And h two does maybe who's catching or
- 39:14Speaker 8: playing third base factor into your confidence where it's like tex,
- 39:18Speaker 8: I've got Michael Remember Michael Barrett.
- 39:20Speaker 4: That guy was a tough dude.
- 39:22Speaker 8: Yep, I've been like I would be like, okay, I'll
- 39:25Speaker 8: but you know, like Michael's there, I probably feel a
- 39:28Speaker 8: lot better about it. I mean, like, how tell me
- 39:30Speaker 8: how what a picture is thinking? And like is there
- 39:33Speaker 8: a strategy? Like I feel a lot better about it
- 39:35Speaker 8: because he's catching that kind.
- 39:36Speaker 5: Of Yeah, I think. I think generally, you just know
- 39:41Speaker 5: that you're already at an advantage, right, you're pretty much,
- 39:44Speaker 5: let's just call it. You have five friends closer than
- 39:47Speaker 5: the other guys, So like there is a security in that, right,
- 39:50Speaker 5: Like if he charges the mound, my infielders and my
- 39:54Speaker 5: catcher are all going to get there before anybody else
- 39:56Speaker 5: on his team. Maybe the ion deck can get out
- 39:58Speaker 5: there fast enough. And so in it coming up in
- 40:01Speaker 5: my era, it was a thing. It was a send
- 40:04Speaker 5: a message like you know, you know do this you
- 40:07Speaker 5: like I got. I got thrown out of one game
- 40:09Speaker 5: in my entire career for retaliation. I hit Travis Fryman
- 40:14Speaker 5: after Mike Lowell got drilled pretty hard, and I got
- 40:17Speaker 5: thrown out for that is the only time. But I
- 40:21Speaker 5: never really I never really worried about it personally, Like
- 40:24Speaker 5: even the biggest guys like this most scared I ever
- 40:26Speaker 5: had to Retell. He was at it moyses Loo when
- 40:28Speaker 5: I was with the Cincinnati Reds and Jason LaRue owned
- 40:33Speaker 5: Mark Pryor like just for whatever reason, just hit him everywhere.
- 40:36Speaker 5: And then Mark Pryor was throwing at his head. And
- 40:40Speaker 5: I'm like, and Jason's my catcher. And so I get
- 40:42Speaker 5: two out and I kind of like, you know, somebody
- 40:45Speaker 5: said something that dug out, like that's bullcrap. I said,
- 40:47Speaker 5: I got this and I got two out and here
- 40:48Speaker 5: comes moyes Lou and like this dude is like the toughest,
- 40:52Speaker 5: like you know, and I'm like, oh, man, god, we
- 40:56Speaker 5: go here we go. Don't hit him above the belt.
- 40:58Speaker 5: Don't hit him above the belt. And I and and
- 41:01Speaker 5: this is how pro he is. I ninety five right
- 41:03Speaker 5: to the quad and he just bent down, took off
- 41:06Speaker 5: his shin guard and went to first base. Never looked
- 41:08Speaker 5: out there. I never looked at him, you know, And
- 41:11Speaker 5: in my eyes, it was like, man, I already respected
- 41:14Speaker 5: this guy. Now I really respect him because he knows
- 41:15Speaker 5: what's going on. You know. I think it's changed a lot.
- 41:19Speaker 5: It's not a thing anymore. These guys are too friendly
- 41:22Speaker 5: with each other, not too friendly at like meaning like
- 41:24Speaker 5: they all know each other.
- 41:25Speaker 3: They grow up and they play together.
- 41:26Speaker 5: I have travel ball everywhere there on TMSA perfect games.
- 41:28Speaker 5: They're doing all these things so they don't and then
- 41:31Speaker 5: like rarely do you ever. Even in my career, I
- 41:33Speaker 5: think I hit one hundred guys or roughly around hundred guys.
- 41:36Speaker 5: I think probably five of them are on purpose. You know,
- 41:40Speaker 5: there's not a lot that are on purpose. Some of
- 41:41Speaker 5: them might be like get off the plate, but like
- 41:43Speaker 5: I'm not like I'm trying to hit this guy. But
- 41:46Speaker 5: you always have like the back pocket, like you know
- 41:49Speaker 5: when you're when you know you're you know, when I
- 41:51Speaker 5: directly at first base and their dugout is over there,
- 41:54Speaker 5: like on first baseline, I'm like, I'm good, yeah, you know,
- 41:56Speaker 5: like I'm fine, he's got he's got my back.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Last baseball question, when you do your musical Mount Rushmore
- 42:01Speaker 2: a favorite artists ever lowering the mound. That's the talk
- 42:03Speaker 2: now because I would have batted.
- 42:06Speaker 3: The whole league is batting like two thirty to forty
- 42:08Speaker 3: depending on what week you look at it.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Thoughts, Uh have George Brett to tell a few more
- 42:15Speaker 5: kids how to hit and teach that way.
- 42:18Speaker 3: I listen to George Brett tell like talk about heating.
- 42:20Speaker 3: It's great, like planes, yeah, big planes guy, yeah, count
- 42:24Speaker 3: count guy.
- 42:25Speaker 5: Like I think there's a little bit of a lost
- 42:28Speaker 5: art in that. Like it's fine. Your three A swings
- 42:31Speaker 5: are great, you know, like put an a swing on it,
- 42:33Speaker 5: three A swings, get three swings in. But like it
- 42:36Speaker 5: also is really nice to leave the game one to nothing.
- 42:38Speaker 5: So if that means getting a runner over from second
- 42:39Speaker 5: base so that you know, you know who likes hitting
- 42:41Speaker 5: with a runner on third and one out the guy
- 42:43Speaker 5: behind you, you know, your teammate because now I guess
- 42:46Speaker 5: they just fly out, you know, guy in fields back,
- 42:50Speaker 5: just put the ball in play. You really can't put
- 42:52Speaker 5: the ball in play. You can't do that. You're the
- 42:55Speaker 5: best hitters in the world and you can't. I get it.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Dudes are throwing hard, but like you can't shorten up
- 42:59Speaker 5: and just play Pepper to the second basement who's played
- 43:01Speaker 5: all the way back and get an RBI. Your average
- 43:03Speaker 5: goes like this all year, man, those are RBIs only
- 43:05Speaker 5: go like that looks really good with one hundred of
- 43:07Speaker 5: them at the end of the year.
- 43:08Speaker 3: So don't lower the mount.
- 43:09Speaker 5: Don't lower the mount. I think that's a cop out
- 43:11Speaker 5: for guys not wanting to adjust the way they hit.
- 43:13Speaker 2: What about when they lowered it, like Bob Gibson, a big,
- 43:16Speaker 2: bigger reason than the mound got lowered to begin with,
- 43:18Speaker 2: Like you could come up and just knock them down.
- 43:20Speaker 3: Yeah, do you feel like it should still be even higher?
- 43:23Speaker 5: I would love it if it was higher. No, I
- 43:26Speaker 5: think they found a sweet spot. I think that's a
- 43:27Speaker 5: really good place to be right now, and I don't
- 43:29Speaker 5: think it needs to be adjusted. I think that's just
- 43:32Speaker 5: I think you risk injuries. I just think that there's
- 43:35Speaker 5: it's a way we want to be creative because you know,
- 43:39Speaker 5: averages are down, but offensive production is up. Runs are up,
- 43:42Speaker 5: so guys are hitting home runs. I think if we
- 43:45Speaker 5: just put a little emphasis on paying the three hundred
- 43:47Speaker 5: hitter instead of just paying for ops, so that all
- 43:50Speaker 5: guys do is try to launch every single pitch, because like, cool,
- 43:53Speaker 5: if I go zero for three and I hit the
- 43:55Speaker 5: ball hard three times, that's all that matters. Exit v
- 43:57Speaker 5: low and like if we put an emphasis on like, yeah,
- 44:00Speaker 5: you hit three hundred, you get paid. You know, It's
- 44:02Speaker 5: like if I'm a manager, I have three rules beyond
- 44:03Speaker 5: time hustle and if you hit a home run, you
- 44:06Speaker 5: play the next day. That's it. I don't care what
- 44:09Speaker 5: the analytics say, you play the next day.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Musical Mount Rushmore. Final question, give me the four artists
- 44:13Speaker 3: that have infected your life the most.
- 44:17Speaker 5: Okay, Garth Brooks.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Why Garth?
- 44:24Speaker 5: That's my child. I grew up you know, loving country
- 44:27Speaker 5: music and that's like you know, times of the the memories.
- 44:30Speaker 5: It sparks in my head. Man is like so great. Yeah, yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 5: have you met him? Uh yeah, yeah. Actually he did
- 44:39Speaker 5: the teammates for kids. It's charity thing that he would
- 44:41Speaker 5: always do. And we actually uh got to hang one
- 44:44Speaker 5: night up in his suite, which was which was pretty awesome.
- 44:48Speaker 5: It was a weird collection me him, Roulan Gardner, Larry
- 44:51Speaker 5: Walker and uh it was it was a blast. But
- 44:54Speaker 5: just he was awesome, man, so awesome. I would probably
- 45:00Speaker 5: I would say Marvin Gay. I love his music. I
- 45:05Speaker 5: love the soul that I can listen sit there and
- 45:08Speaker 5: listen to that genre of music, like all day. It's
- 45:10Speaker 5: on my playlist all the time. I would probably put Uh,
- 45:19Speaker 5: I probably would put Eddie on there. I would put
- 45:21Speaker 5: Eddie Vetter on there.
- 45:22Speaker 4: Just Eddie or Pearl Jam.
- 45:23Speaker 5: I would put Pearl Jam on there. You know, I
- 45:25Speaker 5: love Ed and I love his voice, but I just
- 45:27Speaker 5: love Mike and Matt and I. You know those guys
- 45:30Speaker 5: their music and Chicago.
- 45:32Speaker 4: Did you know him.
- 45:33Speaker 3: He's a big cups.
- 45:34Speaker 5: Yeah. I actually gotta do it. Do a little fun
- 45:37Speaker 5: thing at Chelios's Jersey retirement. I got to get up
- 45:39Speaker 5: and sing that we did the band We did the Weight,
- 45:41Speaker 5: which was a.
- 45:41Speaker 4: Lot of fun, like the band song.
- 45:43Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it was. It was great. So I put
- 45:47Speaker 5: I would put them and then uh, when you're saying,
- 45:49Speaker 5: I would put Chris Stapleton on there for cool. Yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 5: I think that's probably been my biggest bridge, like at once,
- 45:55Speaker 5: you know, not that once, but like as Garth you know,
- 45:59Speaker 5: got older and you know, still performs obviously, but and
- 46:02Speaker 5: then all of a sudden, Chris came in and I
- 46:04Speaker 5: liked him, you know, even before he was Chris Stapleton,
- 46:08Speaker 5: like listening to you know, old stuff and and things
- 46:11Speaker 5: like that, and and then what he's blown up into
- 46:15Speaker 5: is and and still so humble, you know, from what
- 46:18Speaker 5: I see or hear or even when I witness when
- 46:20Speaker 5: he's at innings Fest, how he treats people and the
- 46:23Speaker 5: same way.
- 46:23Speaker 3: I was a fan of you back in Canada when
- 46:25Speaker 3: you were sixteen.
- 46:27Speaker 4: I was like, that's my guy.
- 46:27Speaker 2: I know I have got good Yeah, that's what I
- 46:29Speaker 2: always say. Like I knew Dempster when he was just
- 46:31Speaker 2: a kid, like but they were like, well you were
- 46:33Speaker 2: just a kid too.
- 46:33Speaker 5: But I knew hey when I when I was at
- 46:35Speaker 5: Max over there at karaoke last night, and and and
- 46:37Speaker 5: the dude decided to sink Tennessee whiskey. I was full
- 46:41Speaker 5: blair and vocals, so I was ready to go. I
- 46:42Speaker 5: went Proud Mary last night.
- 46:44Speaker 3: You sang Proud Mary last night? Did you do the
- 46:46Speaker 3: Tina or that John Tina?
- 46:48Speaker 5: Yeah? It was the litro. Yeah, oh yeah.
- 46:52Speaker 3: I would have loved to have a scene video A
- 46:55Speaker 3: big fan. And I know you're calling the game. I'm
- 46:58Speaker 3: playing now. Are you calling the game?
- 46:58Speaker 5: Yes?
- 46:59Speaker 4: Tonight?
- 46:59Speaker 5: Yeah? Super for this. It's gonna be a good time.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Are you Are you ready?
- 47:02Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 47:02Speaker 3: I'm ready.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I'm just worried because we we've been traveling around and
- 47:05Speaker 2: like we were at University of Arizona with the football
- 47:07Speaker 2: program yesterday and so you know, we made a little
- 47:12Speaker 2: came to Dallas.
- 47:13Speaker 3: We're gonna go up to University of Oregon.
- 47:14Speaker 2: But if I don't start, that's what I'm worried about,
- 47:17Speaker 2: like getting here, diverting our schedule, and then being on
- 47:20Speaker 2: the bench.
- 47:21Speaker 3: Yeah, like I'm scared of that. So it's a real thing.
- 47:23Speaker 3: It's a real thing, and you don't think it will be.
- 47:26Speaker 5: Like I remember years ago, I played in a celebrity
- 47:28Speaker 5: like a baseball player celebrity thing in Pump Springs and
- 47:32Speaker 5: I was pitching and then I went to the lineup
- 47:34Speaker 5: card and I wasn't hitting, and I went Lou Brock
- 47:36Speaker 5: was her manager, and I went into his office and
- 47:39Speaker 5: I'm like, you're really not gonna let me hit in
- 47:42Speaker 5: this softball game? And he goes, well, you're a pitcher,
- 47:44Speaker 5: and I go, I know my average isn't very good,
- 47:46Speaker 5: but like and he goes, fine. I end up hitting
- 47:48Speaker 5: the tater. But I was like, you know, like thank you,
- 47:51Speaker 5: Like you can't bench me in.
- 47:53Speaker 3: This So that's what I'm worried about. That I traveled
- 47:55Speaker 3: all this way.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's like I'm ready to play and then
- 47:58Speaker 2: I for some reason, there's you know, one of these
- 48:01Speaker 2: rappers is ahead of me. Yeah, and you know that
- 48:03Speaker 2: will be embarrassing for me. Yeah, so that's what's up.
- 48:05Speaker 5: Okay, So who's you do? You know who your manager?
- 48:07Speaker 3: Don't know anything? Okay, I just know I know a
- 48:08Speaker 3: couple of people. I know Dion.
- 48:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:10Speaker 2: We did a pilot for ABC together for the show
- 48:13Speaker 2: didn't get picked up. We worked with like four months.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I love Deon.
- 48:15Speaker 5: Yeah, he's awesome and he might be he's one of
- 48:17Speaker 5: the coaches.
- 48:18Speaker 3: Oh he's coaching.
- 48:19Speaker 5: Yeah, so now you got an end.
- 48:20Speaker 3: If he's my coach, I'll be playing that leadoff let's go.
- 48:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:26Speaker 2: I thought it was weird because his foot, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 2: he was injured. Yeah, and they said he was coming.
- 48:30Speaker 2: I messaged him, but I don't know he was coaching. O. Yeah,
- 48:32Speaker 2: I hope he's my coach.
- 48:33Speaker 4: Feel better?
- 48:33Speaker 2: Yeah, if he's my coach, yeah, so no, but I've
- 48:36Speaker 2: never done this before.
- 48:36Speaker 3: What's the tip? Because I can still play a little bit,
- 48:38Speaker 3: But what's what's the tip?
- 48:39Speaker 5: Yeah? Well, I think with the hitting is don't over
- 48:41Speaker 5: swing everybody because you know they want to They want
- 48:43Speaker 5: to hit it so hard and then you end up
- 48:45Speaker 5: rolling over popping it up and it's like and just
- 48:48Speaker 5: wait a little extra second for that ball to get there,
- 48:51Speaker 5: you know. But that definitely just yeah, just don't overswing
- 48:55Speaker 5: put the good word in for me. If I'm gonna
- 48:56Speaker 5: I'm gonna go over there.
- 48:57Speaker 3: I'm going to say, hey, dude, that guy can still play.
- 48:59Speaker 5: Yeah. I just saw him. He was taking ground balls
- 49:01Speaker 5: and yeah, Lobby, Yeah absolutely, Ryan.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Thanks now, I really appreciate the time. Yeah, thanks you
- 49:07Speaker 3: for having moving for us, and we'll see you later
- 49:09Speaker 3: on tonight.
- 49:09Speaker 5: You got it all right. I feel like.
- 49:13Speaker 2: We've been looking for players. The closest we've gotten is
- 49:16Speaker 2: we are. Driver said he dropped off King Griffy Junr
- 49:19Speaker 2: like two hours before he dropped us off.
- 49:21Speaker 4: So that means he's here somewhere.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Yeah, somewhere, King Griffy Junior is here, and that's awesome.
- 49:28Speaker 2: As we record this, it's Saturday, so the actual All
- 49:31Speaker 2: Star game doesn't starts till Tuesday.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Did you know that?
- 49:34Speaker 5: I didn't know that.
- 49:34Speaker 2: So none of the player's gonna because they're still playing game, correct,
- 49:38Speaker 2: which is kind of disappointing because I was looking for
- 49:39Speaker 2: like Bobby wit Junr.
- 49:40Speaker 4: But but but some of the older players that aren't playing,
- 49:43Speaker 4: I haven't seen one of them. Well, man, I'm telling you,
- 49:45Speaker 4: Kevin and I may have seen someone in the gym.
- 49:48Speaker 4: We don't know an older player.
- 49:50Speaker 3: No, uh uh, somebody playing the celebrity softball game. Just
- 49:53Speaker 3: say who it is? Why are you hiding it?
- 49:54Speaker 4: Because because we're not sure if it was really him.
- 49:57Speaker 3: Okay, who did you think it might have been?
- 49:59Speaker 5: Does Bryant?
- 50:00Speaker 4: He was wearing a hoodie. He was working out, and
- 50:02Speaker 4: actually he was like in between reps, so he's just
- 50:04Speaker 4: sitting on the bench and then we were kind of
- 50:06Speaker 4: staring and then he looked up at us, and we're like,
- 50:08Speaker 4: ohh and then we looked out quick.
- 50:10Speaker 3: But but he wasn't that tall, which I would assume
- 50:13Speaker 3: he would be tall. What do you say, wasn't that tall? Like, uh,
- 50:17Speaker 3: taller than you?
- 50:18Speaker 4: I would say the guy was about six to one
- 50:21Speaker 4: taller than you. Yeah, by one inch, but.
- 50:23Speaker 3: You're not five eleven, No, I'm six foot No. No,
- 50:26Speaker 3: how strong was he?
- 50:27Speaker 5: Though?
- 50:27Speaker 4: He was pretty fit, but he wasn't overly ripped, and
- 50:31Speaker 4: he kind of looked young.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Okay, des Bryant is six to two, so he's not.
- 50:37Speaker 7: But here's where I'm a little confused, Eddie.
- 50:39Speaker 5: He was sitting down.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Yeah, no, no, no, but no, no will while you
- 50:43Speaker 3: went to go do your other he turned away. He
- 50:45Speaker 3: stood out, that's all.
- 50:46Speaker 7: I was like, when you're talking about his height, I
- 50:47Speaker 7: was like, wait, how do you know? Also, we were
- 50:49Speaker 7: sitting on the ab Gruncher his.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Place in Arizona.
- 50:51Speaker 2: There was a Michael Jordan old school cut out of
- 50:54Speaker 2: him from like a Weedi's box or something and had
- 50:57Speaker 2: his actual height and.
- 50:57Speaker 3: He people remember that poster.
- 50:59Speaker 2: He couldn't have been more than ten in the Wheaties box.
- 51:01Speaker 3: So Eddie's like, look hout tall, I am.
- 51:04Speaker 4: I was almost as tall as Michael Jordan.
- 51:05Speaker 2: So we haven't seen anyone yet. But we got here
- 51:08Speaker 2: last night. I went straight to sleep and you guys
- 51:09Speaker 2: went out.
- 51:10Speaker 4: We did. Yeah, we went out to uh right next
- 51:12Speaker 4: to the hotels. It's just a bunch of like I
- 51:14Speaker 4: don't know. There's one area that where there's ten bars
- 51:17Speaker 4: in one area called Texas Live and Reading. Kevin wrote able, I.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Heard you guys went to the video game place. I
- 51:24Speaker 2: saw Red throw the ball. Yep was see the fastest arm? No,
- 51:28Speaker 2: Kevin was, how fast you throw it?
- 51:33Speaker 5: Seventy four?
- 51:35Speaker 4: Nice read. That's pretty good though for both of you.
- 51:39Speaker 6: Yeah, went too bad.
- 51:40Speaker 3: You feel like you'd beat him?
- 51:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like I probably should have Are you
- 51:45Speaker 2: more of an athlete than Kevin.
- 51:50Speaker 5: When it comes to baseball?
- 51:51Speaker 3: Probably?
- 51:52Speaker 4: What d that's tough?
- 51:54Speaker 7: No, you think you're a better You hit the side
- 51:56Speaker 7: of the thing. You didn't even hit the accuracy. You
- 52:00Speaker 7: couldn't even read your accuracy because you hit the side
- 52:02Speaker 7: of it.
- 52:02Speaker 6: And I thought I was gonna hit my arm on it.
- 52:04Speaker 4: Oh they were plastic balls, and it really was like squishy, can.
- 52:07Speaker 5: You throw a knuckleball? Absolutely? Really?
- 52:09Speaker 1: Ye?
- 52:11Speaker 5: No, remember I brought that up and I took his
- 52:13Speaker 5: spotlight on the podcast.
- 52:15Speaker 3: I used to be able to throw Another thing?
- 52:17Speaker 2: Is our friends off all? Ricky's here and Reed did
- 52:19Speaker 2: not know his name and he's been hanging in with us.
- 52:21Speaker 5: For like what did I just say?
- 52:24Speaker 4: Nothing?
- 52:25Speaker 2: No?
- 52:25Speaker 4: I mean you didn't have a guess.
- 52:26Speaker 5: I was Malvin, Yeah, No, it's it's Ricky.
- 52:28Speaker 3: I said, Jimmy, that's not the same name though, that's
- 52:31Speaker 3: rick Yeah, that's Ricky.
- 52:33Speaker 4: A lot of people guess Charlie.
- 52:35Speaker 8: With me.
- 52:35Speaker 4: Really, I get a little Charlie.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Uh So we were like, read what's his name is?
- 52:39Speaker 2: He said, hey, hey, doing Mike check And I was like,
- 52:41Speaker 2: why would you just hate him?
- 52:42Speaker 5: What's his name?
- 52:43Speaker 4: Staid?
- 52:43Speaker 3: Hanging out with us all day and he's like, I
- 52:46Speaker 3: don't know his name. I don't know his name, so
- 52:48Speaker 3: read this is Ricky.
- 52:49Speaker 4: Sorry, Ricky, Ricky, this is reed nice to meet you, Ricky.
- 52:54Speaker 3: I'm Eddie Softball.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Ricky works for the University of Texas, right officially? Or
- 52:58Speaker 2: do you work for BEVO?
- 53:00Speaker 5: You work for both?
- 53:01Speaker 4: You work for the Longhorn.
- 53:02Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm you know, the Jerry Maguire of that longhornes
- 53:06Speaker 8: he's the agent.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that's pretty cool.
- 53:09Speaker 3: So you guys are now officially in the SEC.
- 53:11Speaker 4: That's correct.
- 53:12Speaker 3: That was a big date.
- 53:13Speaker 5: We are.
- 53:14Speaker 4: As we're almost two weeks in.
- 53:16Speaker 8: He was looking at his watch, but because we get
- 53:18Speaker 8: the date on there, it's a it's a uh, it's
- 53:20Speaker 8: a time X.
- 53:22Speaker 2: The Oklahoma Athletic Director called me and said, hey, would
- 53:25Speaker 2: you come and do like a show on the day
- 53:28Speaker 2: we go in the SEC. We want to do a
- 53:29Speaker 2: big announcement. I want to have welcome to the SEC.
- 53:32Speaker 2: You have a bunch of the kids out do a
- 53:33Speaker 2: free show. And I like the Athletic director of Oklahoma,
- 53:38Speaker 2: like I know him a little bit. His name is Joke, right,
- 53:40Speaker 2: Joe yeah, yeah, yeah, Joe c yeah, and so super
- 53:43Speaker 2: nice guy, and I was like, Joe, se I'm not
- 53:46Speaker 2: a O you fan. I do like oh You more
- 53:49Speaker 2: than Texas now because my wife.
- 53:52Speaker 3: But I was like, I'm not.
- 53:53Speaker 4: That's that's he's married and that's tough.
- 53:55Speaker 3: But I'm not an O you fan.
- 53:57Speaker 2: And so I didn't want any part of welcoming oh
- 54:00Speaker 2: You or Texas to the sec as like, come along,
- 54:03Speaker 2: I'll be your guide as we talk you to. So
- 54:05Speaker 2: I'm happy you guys are here because now you get
- 54:07Speaker 2: to play like actual schedules.
- 54:10Speaker 8: Well, I mean you ask me, you know a lot
- 54:14Speaker 8: of what we've were. It kind of sounds a lot
- 54:16Speaker 8: like the old Southwest Conference. I mean we played Arkansas
- 54:19Speaker 8: a whole bunch. We're talking about the long time technically.
- 54:23Speaker 3: SMU and TCU.
- 54:26Speaker 2: You get to leave all that behind. SMU's not even
- 54:28Speaker 2: in the conference. Wasn't the Big twelve anymore?
- 54:30Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 54:30Speaker 2: Yeah, play Georgia like Alabama's schools, LSU, these schools were playing.
- 54:35Speaker 4: They're not going to need an introduction. We're pretty familiar.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Yeah, hopefully you'd get matched up in a single bowl
- 54:41Speaker 2: game against one of them at the end of the year,
- 54:42Speaker 2: after you beat all the little patsis.
- 54:45Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 54:46Speaker 8: I mean, I think Texas A and M had a
- 54:49Speaker 8: hard time with those little pats's I didn't. They weren't
- 54:51Speaker 8: winning much in the Big twelve.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Yeah, true, and then they paid their coach, timbo Fisher
- 54:55Speaker 2: one billion dollars and then you got to keep all
- 54:57Speaker 2: of it. Oh my god, I'm super excited that you
- 54:59Speaker 2: guys are coming, not to the SEC just because my
- 55:03Speaker 2: wife's I know you fan, and we get to be
- 55:04Speaker 2: in the same conference now and then.
- 55:07Speaker 8: You're united in your horns downism.
- 55:09Speaker 3: You know, you're just like sensitive about horns.
- 55:12Speaker 4: It's not it's.
- 55:15Speaker 3: Knowledgeable, doesn't even allow it.
- 55:16Speaker 8: The only the only reason that it would ever bother me,
- 55:20Speaker 8: Like people have done it to me a million times.
- 55:23Speaker 8: You come and put it two inches from my face.
- 55:25Speaker 8: That's a little bit different story, like personal space.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Like the personal space. They were saying they were gonna
- 55:30Speaker 3: call penalties on teams for a game.
- 55:33Speaker 8: But that's like if we did guns down Texas Tech,
- 55:37Speaker 8: same thing we got.
- 55:39Speaker 4: Yes it did.
- 55:40Speaker 8: Mike Davis got a penalty for doing guns down in
- 55:44Speaker 8: love it don't question me you talking to.
- 55:47Speaker 2: I would also like to say the reason I hate
- 55:49Speaker 2: Texas so much is because you guys are bigger and
- 55:51Speaker 2: better than us, and I agree with all of that.
- 55:53Speaker 3: I've often said that you guys have.
- 55:54Speaker 2: More money, you're bigger, effect you've won, you know, more
- 55:57Speaker 2: champion how many championships you guys won.
- 55:59Speaker 4: Well, I mean it depends on how you count.
- 56:01Speaker 3: But you know, for account, okay, so we've won.
- 56:03Speaker 8: We're not counting like Alabama accounts, where it's like, oh,
- 56:06Speaker 8: we lost three games and then you know somebody else
- 56:10Speaker 8: is undefeatable recounted.
- 56:11Speaker 2: You guys were our rival in the Southwest Conference. We
- 56:14Speaker 2: weren't really yours.
- 56:15Speaker 3: We were just a team you didn't like because we
- 56:17Speaker 3: didn't like you.
- 56:18Speaker 8: Now, I think the Texas Arkansas is A is a legitimate,
- 56:22Speaker 8: recognized rivalry to Longhorn fans like way more than Texas Tech,
- 56:28Speaker 8: way more than TCU.
- 56:30Speaker 3: But not Oklahoma A and M. Right, you never want
- 56:32Speaker 3: to be somebody's third place. That's not that's not the
- 56:34Speaker 3: real rivalry, that's just somebody you don't like.
- 56:36Speaker 8: Well, I think Oklahoma is our number one rivalry. I
- 56:39Speaker 8: would probably put A and M second, but there are
- 56:43Speaker 8: a lot of Longhorn fans that would put Arkansas right
- 56:47Speaker 8: there with Texas A and M. I mean they're typically older.
- 56:50Speaker 8: But I mean when we played all three years ago
- 56:54Speaker 8: or whatever it is, I have never seen more school
- 56:59Speaker 8: sponsored in my life.
- 57:01Speaker 4: Like they were like they had a guy on at
- 57:04Speaker 4: the game. It's like, come on, let's see those horns down.
- 57:08Speaker 4: Like that's all. It wasn't. Everybody was.
- 57:11Speaker 8: Everybody was seven in a uniform, uniform, and so they
- 57:17Speaker 8: charged the field and I'm like, we're trying to get
- 57:21Speaker 8: off the field and get out of there, and like
- 57:23Speaker 8: people are grabbing me and like saying all kinds of stuff.
- 57:26Speaker 4: They go down there too.
- 57:27Speaker 8: No, Beava wasn't there, but I was there, and I
- 57:31Speaker 8: think they thought I was a coach or something. They
- 57:33Speaker 8: had no idea who they were telling they were talking to.
- 57:36Speaker 4: But like it was heated.
- 57:38Speaker 8: It was heated, and quite honestly, the girls were more
- 57:42Speaker 8: aggressive than the guys. Interesting, oh yeah, oh yeah, what
- 57:46Speaker 8: do you think that was?
- 57:46Speaker 5: Buzz?
- 57:48Speaker 3: I don't know. It's so rantic at this point, like
- 57:50Speaker 3: an observation.
- 57:51Speaker 4: I was sitting up in a suite taking it all in,
- 57:54Speaker 4: So you didn't storm the field was up to high,
- 57:57Speaker 4: was up to high.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 57:58Speaker 3: I'm happy that it's happening.
- 57:59Speaker 2: I just wasn't gonna go be a part of Oklahoma's
- 58:01Speaker 2: Welcome to the SEC day, even though I enjoyed Joe
- 58:03Speaker 2: Ci and I like Oklahoma better the Texas, But Oklahoma
- 58:06Speaker 2: Texas rivalry feels very You're you're.
- 58:09Speaker 3: On even term A and M. You guys kind of
- 58:12Speaker 3: look down at because they're like the little brother.
- 58:15Speaker 4: I mean, they're They're a great school.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Letters on the name to even exist, well, they they
- 58:20Speaker 3: rarely use them.
- 58:21Speaker 8: I mean they're the only school that I know that
- 58:23Speaker 8: you know, Michigan State don't do it, Florida State, don't
- 58:25Speaker 8: do it. You don't somebody calls themselves a Florida seminole,
- 58:29Speaker 8: like they say Texas Aggie's all the time, which is different.
- 58:34Speaker 4: I mean, they're Texas A and M.
- 58:35Speaker 8: But like I will say that their fans are as
- 58:39Speaker 8: passionate as any school in the country.
- 58:41Speaker 4: I mean, we go play there. It is crazy loud.
- 58:44Speaker 3: Do you expect to win the SEC this year?
- 58:46Speaker 4: I expect to compete to win THEE.
- 58:49Speaker 2: What would be in your mind a successful season record
- 58:53Speaker 2: wise eliminate the playoffer.
- 58:55Speaker 8: I mean, I don't know how many wins and I
- 58:59Speaker 8: you know, I'm I would I would hope that we
- 59:01Speaker 8: would win ten games.
- 59:02Speaker 3: But you know if you went only ten, is that
- 59:05Speaker 3: a success?
- 59:07Speaker 4: I don't know. I mean, I'm in charge of Bevo,
- 59:09Speaker 4: you know the offensive coordinator.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Let me read, let me read.
- 59:13Speaker 4: I love the answer.
- 59:15Speaker 5: I love it.
- 59:15Speaker 3: Let me read your schedule and you give me wins
- 59:17Speaker 3: and losses. This is no my gosh, you can do it,
- 59:20Speaker 3: because I'll do it.
- 59:20Speaker 4: I'm loving this right now. You're representing your school. I
- 59:23Speaker 4: know I go exactly exactly right. There's no pressure.
- 59:28Speaker 8: I lost the we have no there isn't you tell
- 59:32Speaker 8: me we're playing the Patriots next week.
- 59:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna be like, I don't like here, we go
- 59:36Speaker 2: give me winner loss?
- 59:37Speaker 3: Ready?
- 59:38Speaker 2: Okay, twenty twenty four schedule, game number one, August thirty
- 59:41Speaker 2: first is the thing.
- 59:42Speaker 8: Let's just go ahead and say there's You're not going
- 59:44Speaker 8: to catch me saying we're gonna lose it.
- 59:46Speaker 4: It's just not every game, okay, you just we're twelve
- 59:49Speaker 4: and oh but realistically you're not going to go and
- 59:51Speaker 4: defeated when you're doing this right now, So you got
- 59:52Speaker 4: to pick some losses. I am not going to pick
- 59:54Speaker 4: a loss.
- 59:55Speaker 3: There's no way at Texas in Austin. Where who Colorado State?
- 59:59Speaker 2: At Texas in Austin will win. Okay, Texas at Michigan
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: on the Timber six win in Michigan. Wow, that's strong,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: I'd agree.
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: What does that mean? Oh my god?
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: Okay, U t s A at Texas win, Louise, How
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: do you guys play such weak games?
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: That's what we're talking about. It plays like Furman.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I mean, come on, Louisiana, Monroe at Texas win. Yeah, Mississippi,
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: State of Texas win. Bet the farm Texas the Oklahoma
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: and Dallas win.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: Oh that's the boomer.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Sooner, Georgia at Texas win, Texas at Vanderbilt. When bet
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: the farm Florida at Texas win.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: Come on, Ricky, you're not even playing the game because
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: there's no like. But but at least say it's going
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: to be a challenge.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: Back to that.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Texas at Arkansas, when Kentucky at Texas win, Texas and
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Texas A and m win. Okay, so let's win Texas
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: versus the Chiefs. I like, well, okay, what do you
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: think will be the hardest game for you guys this year?
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: You'll obviously win.
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: Well, I mean I would think that everybody would think
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: the Georgia game is going to be the toughest game.
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: But we have to play at Arkansas, we have to
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: play at Texas A and M. That's gonna be tough.
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: Obviously playing the Sooners and Dallas is always tough, but
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: like going on the playing Arkansas and Texas A and
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: M on the road in the same year, that's tough.
- 1:01:22Speaker 8: I mean, that's gonna Those are going to be the
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: most hostile crowds.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: We faced all season, bar not.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: I think the Arkansas game will be different this time
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: around than last time around.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: What's good, I mean, what's good for you guys too.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: It's part of it's eleven am game as well, a
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Fattville We're not Gonnan years drunk.
- 1:01:40Speaker 8: Well, I mean I agree that, Like I'd rather play
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: Arkansas at eleven than seven pm.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't even have a team the cause team no, no,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: you do Dallas Cowboys schedule at any Yes.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: Dallas, and I love the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: But if you ask me Dallas Cowboys versus long words,
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: and we're like, man, if we get a couple.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Of turnovers, I like, here we go, both of you
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: guys one.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: All right, now you can be honest? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: Game one Cowboys at Browns win.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: I'll take a win. Take the spread two.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Saints at Cowboy you don't even know the spread, whatever
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: it is. Saints at Cowboys. When Ravens at Cowboys.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: Loss, be a close one. We might lose that one.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: No, min you gotta pick, we'll lose it.
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: Right now.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: You are two and one, okay, Cowboys at Giants win
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: when three and one, Cowboys at Steelers win win four
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: and one, Lions at Cowboys, Lions at Cowboys, yeah.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: When that'll be the win because I think they play
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: them again. Okay, I might say a loss on that.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: You're five and one right now.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: We do really well at home. We do really well
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: at home.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Cowboys at forty nine Ers loss, five and two, Cowboys
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: at Falcons win, six and two, Eagles at cow Boys win.
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: Eagles yeah.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: At Dallas when seven and twoccording to Eddie, so far
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Texans at Cowboys.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Ooh at in Dallas. I'll take a win on that one.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Last win eight too, okay, Cowboys at Commanders when win
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: nine to two?
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: For readdy, Giants at Cowboys. When when Bengals at Cowboys.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: Loss probably a loss?
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: Oh like ten and three, eleven and three. I forget
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: who we are.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: But I have one more. I have us losing one
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: more than.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: Ten and three.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Okay, Cowboys at Panthers, When when Buccaneers at Cowboys?
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: When when Cowboys at Eagles lost loss to loss?
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: And Commanders at Cowboys when we lost four?
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: So the Cowboys at thirteen and four and then.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: I have I have them at twelve and five. Then
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: did I have five? I had five? Then I had
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: one more than Yeah, you have one more than me.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: But around the same.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Would you pay Dak Ricky sixty million dollars because that's
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: going to be about what markets said that if he
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: is the new guy that's going to set the uh
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: set pace.
- 1:04:05Speaker 8: My thought is on that that if you're not in
- 1:04:09Speaker 8: a place that you don't think you're going to compete
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: any anytime in the near future, then no, Like if.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: You eleven twelve games a year, sure, okay, but like
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: every year.
- 1:04:20Speaker 8: But the thing now, I'm not if this isn't anything
- 1:04:23Speaker 8: on deck. I'm just saying that, like if you think, okay,
- 1:04:26Speaker 8: if our window is closed theoretically after the season, I
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: don't think you go and blow all that money on
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: a quarterback that it's not gonna You're not gonna have
- 1:04:34Speaker 8: a team to get to the super Bowl. But if
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: they feel like that they are there, then you know,
- 1:04:41Speaker 8: if they maybe.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Thirty one years old, he's still age wise in his prime.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: But do you think Dak can win a couple of
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: playoff games?
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Gosh, just hard man, that's hard because he's alway is
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: it Dax's ball? They have it one player?
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: Well, we always put it on him because he's the
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: one that cracks. He's the one that plays true. I
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: just I disagree.
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: I think that we've been an undisciplined team like that
- 1:05:08Speaker 8: was a whole team, like that was an embarrassment that
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: went on Dak. That's talking about like the last season
- 1:05:14Speaker 8: and to be like, I don't you know, I kind
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: of feel like that when we were going into some
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: of those playoff games that it felt like we were
- 1:05:25Speaker 8: at a disadvantage. That it to me, it felt like
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: the other team was going to be more prepared, like
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: we were going to need a break or two to win.
- 1:05:32Speaker 8: It wasn't like it was kind of like playing the
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: Packers in the playoffs over the last decade where it
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: was like, oh gosh, you know, like just waiting for
- 1:05:40Speaker 8: Aaron Rodgers to go down the field and beat us.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: At the end, you know, well thanks for Cowboy talking
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: said about, well, what we're literally a thousand steps away
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: from All Star.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: We can no, I know, but dude, it's so cool.
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: We were working out this morning and I can like
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: all I could see was Cowboys Stadium and I was like,
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: do you know what on this elliptical I'm working out
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: with the county with the cow We.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Drove by in a Parma complex and he was like,
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: I guess who lives there, Dak Prescott.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: It's right across from the stadium.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: All right, all right, that's it. We're done. I have
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: to stretch, get more arm loose.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: Yes, good luck.
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: Dudes.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: I didn't realize that coach Prime, Yeah you don't.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: You don't call him Deon.
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: You don't have that right. That's his name. You don't
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: have that right to call him. What are you talking about?
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: That's what the whole world call.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: They call him coach Prime. Trust I don't wize it
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: was he was coaching. So I text him and I said,
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: are you around? And they said, I don't really know
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: what I'm doing because he lives here, so he's not
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: like singing at a hotel.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: And then I said, if you're coaching put me at first.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: Me they just said not yet, okay, So that means
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: the bubbles.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: On and off.
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: The bubbles are on and off like I think I did.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and that says text unsent. God, dang uh. That's it.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Thank you guys, and we'll see you guys soon
