- 0:00Just to heads up, in this episode we'll be touching on some fertility challenges.
- 0:04So if this topic hits too close to home, we totally understand if you need to set this one out or proceed with care.
- 0:14Hi everyone. Today's episode was meant to be about what does it mean for women, the economy, and all of our financial planning.
- 0:22If we look at the idea of having kids earlier in life or later in life,
- 0:27we came across a story that we were originally going to cover in the Curve Weekly.
- 0:31And essentially the headline was that US birth rates have hit a record low in 2025.
- 0:37But what's quite interesting is that while there's all these media headlines that are talking about the fact that
- 0:45women are having less babies and we've got this fertility crisis and there's a whole lot of fear mongering going on.
- 0:53Actually if you look at the statistics, 88% of women who are 45 today are mothers.
- 0:59And that's actually more than 20 years ago.
- 1:02So today's conversation originally, we were going to unpack a lot of these statistics.
- 1:07We were going to talk about the financial implications that this can have.
- 1:10So whether you choose to have kids earlier or later, because there's so much to consider with this conversation
- 1:17in terms of personal finances, financial planning, as well as looking at the whole economy and what's happening.
- 1:23And we recorded this conversation this week.
- 1:26We edited it and we were really excited about putting it out in all honesty.
- 1:31And then Vixen to note this morning to our team Slack.
- 1:34And it said, guys, I'm feeling a little bit worried about this episode.
- 1:38I feel like perhaps we haven't done it justice.
- 1:42And so rather than making a decision in the echo chamber of the curve,
- 1:46we sent this episode to a bunch of people we really trusted.
- 1:49And that was mothers, people have had difficulty with fertility, people of different ages.
- 1:54And what came back was really interesting.
- 1:57And I'm so glad that we paused before putting this out.
- 2:01What it made us really realise is that Vixen, I have a specific perspective experience angle to bring to this conversation.
- 2:10But we're also two mid to late 30s women who don't have kids.
- 2:15And we're both in heterosexual relationships.
- 2:19We've both focused on our career and not had kids yet for various reasons, not just because we're focused on our career,
- 2:25but because we hadn't met the right person till later in life.
- 2:28And what we realised was actually to have this conversation and to do it justice, we really need input from the community
- 2:35and from other people who are in all sorts of different dynamics.
- 2:38Because to truly talk about this conversation, like yes, we've got a huge amount of research.
- 2:43I mean, our prep sheet is like, God, how long is it? It's like eight pages long.
- 2:47That's kind of just the nature of content and podcasting.
- 2:51We really try and make these things timely to talk about them when they're in the news.
- 2:56But we also want to make sure that the quality of what we're putting out is up there.
- 2:59And this conversation with Jessica and I talking about it would not have been that.
- 3:03So we would really love to ask anyone who is listening, who perhaps has considered or gone through adoption,
- 3:11who is in a same sex relationship either considering or not considering kids and the reasons why.
- 3:17Anyone who for fertility reasons hasn't been able to have kids or experienced miscarriages,
- 3:24perhaps chosen by choice not to for financial reasons, anything that you have experienced or someone you know has experienced
- 3:32that might give this conversation a more well-rounded perspective.
- 3:36We would love to hear from you.
- 3:38We have the online, the Curve Hotline, which is where you can leave a voice note.
- 3:42We can totally make these anonymous.
- 3:44You can also send us a DM on Instagram. You could also send us an email.
- 3:48Hello at thecurveplatform.com.
- 3:50We would really welcome any and all perspectives thoughts on this conversation
- 3:55so that we can make sure it is as educational as possible.
- 3:58So thank you in advance.
- 4:00And if you could send this episode to anyone you know, who might be able to offer some kind of insight,
- 4:06that would also be great.
- 4:08So thank you for bearing with us.
- 4:10Well today is not a normal episode.
- 4:12And we will be back from Monday with the Curve Hotline.
- 4:14But in the meantime, we will continue to work on this episode and make sure when we put it out,
- 4:18that everyone is really happy with it.
- 4:20So thank you and we will be back in your ears on Monday.
