- 0:00Speaker 1: Went on.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been lucky enough, so I was in Vegas
- 0:04Speaker 2: for five years. I worked at the country station there,
- 0:06Speaker 2: so I was lucky enough to see the residencies.
- 0:09Speaker 3: You guys ran through.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What got me into country music is I saw you
- 0:16Speaker 2: guys at the Target Center of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I'm from,
- 0:19Speaker 2: and you were opening on Toby Keith's tour, and that
- 0:23Speaker 2: was listen. It doesn't matter who I went with because
- 0:25Speaker 2: she ain't around no more, but anyway, and that was
- 0:29Speaker 2: my first like full live country experience, and I fell
- 0:31Speaker 2: in love with the format. So now that y'all are
- 0:35Speaker 2: back together creating the magic that you've created for so
- 0:39Speaker 2: long for so many fans, that story is mine, But
- 0:42Speaker 2: i'd imagine.
- 0:43Speaker 3: You've heard many stories like that.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You are why you know so many people love country music,
- 0:48Speaker 2: love live country music. How important is that to you
- 0:52Speaker 2: to know as you guys get into what we know
- 0:56Speaker 2: what we're getting now, right, but whatever's next.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I think it's very important. I mean, I think for me,
- 1:04Speaker 1: one of the great things about what we were able
- 1:05Speaker 1: to do was bring a more pop sensibility to country music.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And there were a lot of people that had these
- 1:12Speaker 1: misconceptions about country music. I think that we were able
- 1:15Speaker 1: to go you know, it's not as it's not as
- 1:17Speaker 1: backward and cornpone as you might think. They're really great,
- 1:19Speaker 1: gifted songwriters and musicians here, and we wanted to bring
- 1:23Speaker 1: our own brand of country music in and I think
- 1:25Speaker 1: we were able to do that in a lot of ways.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And I think it opened up some opportunities for people
- 1:31Speaker 1: that would have not likely been country music fans to
- 1:34Speaker 1: start seeing that there were other parts about the format
- 1:37Speaker 1: that they could love and buy into.
- 1:41Speaker 2: As you guys started working on all your solo projects
- 1:45Speaker 2: and doing your own things, you know, starting record label
- 1:47Speaker 2: and all that, at what point in the conversation would
- 1:51Speaker 2: be like, hey, we got a big anniversary coming up.
- 1:53Speaker 3: What do y'all think?
- 1:55Speaker 4: You know, probably, I mean like serious talk about it,
- 1:57Speaker 4: probably a few months ago really, you know, like it
- 2:00Speaker 4: was like, you don't want to miss twenty five years.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I mean that's when you hit milestones like that, you know.
- 2:05Speaker 4: So it's just, uh, it's you know, it's been incredible
- 2:09Speaker 4: and you know our fans deserve it. We deserve it,
- 2:11Speaker 4: and you know twenty was canceled because of COVID, so
- 2:14Speaker 4: we just didn't want to let the moment go go by.
- 2:16Speaker 4: So we're gonna knock these shows out. See what happens
- 2:18Speaker 4: after that. But uh, there's a lot to celebrate.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Man.
- 2:21Speaker 4: We've had an unbelievable journey in life and uh, you know, musically,
- 2:26Speaker 4: and so we're just looking at we're pomped to get
- 2:29Speaker 4: back out there and do these shows and uh just
- 2:32Speaker 4: see the fans and just thank the people that got us,
- 2:35Speaker 4: gave us the lives that they've given us.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I can't wait.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So like this, this interview is going to air on
- 2:39Speaker 2: a national show we do. You don't have yet a
- 2:43Speaker 2: show locally here in Middle Tennessee.
- 2:47Speaker 3: What is it going to mean to you?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Because because as you guys, as you guys stepped away,
- 2:51Speaker 2: Uh you'r the music still lived on right. Uh, it's
- 2:56Speaker 2: still getting played on country radio all over the place.
- 2:58Speaker 2: What did that mean to you that weather this day
- 3:00Speaker 2: came where we're talking about you guys back together and
- 3:03Speaker 2: on the road. Whether this day came or not, what
- 3:06Speaker 2: did it mean to you to know that the music
- 3:07Speaker 2: is still there and people are still enjoying it.
- 3:10Speaker 5: It's it's humbling, man. It's when we made this announcement yesterday,
- 3:14Speaker 5: just reading the comments from fans. It's like they I
- 3:17Speaker 5: think they've been busting at the seams to say what
- 3:20Speaker 5: all they said to is yesterday, And it's so cool
- 3:23Speaker 5: and it's humbling, it's sweet, and you know, this time
- 3:28Speaker 5: off has been different for all three of us and
- 3:31Speaker 5: for myself, just a lot of things are putting perspective,
- 3:34Speaker 5: seeing it in a whole different way than I used
- 3:36Speaker 5: to see it. I'm actually seeing.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It now.
- 3:40Speaker 5: In a lot of ways, and it's refreshing being back
- 3:43Speaker 5: in the same and this is our first time being
- 3:45Speaker 5: in the same room together, all three of us five years,
- 3:48Speaker 5: you know. So yeah, lots happened, a lot of times passed,
- 3:51Speaker 5: but it we've just locked right back in like we
- 3:55Speaker 5: always used to.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I am lucky enough to be a part of country
- 3:58Speaker 2: music through the radio portion of what y'all do. And
- 4:02Speaker 2: I got to tell you the fact the email that
- 4:04Speaker 2: I saw in the phone calls and they can tell you.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I immediately it was like, how can we do this?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Can we get in to talk to them, can we
- 4:09Speaker 2: see them what.
- 4:09Speaker 3: They got going on?
- 4:10Speaker 2: So so let me tell you as a fan, I'm
- 4:12Speaker 2: sure you see all the comments. This is exciting you guys.
- 4:15Speaker 2: You guys not on country radio with newer music. I mean,
- 4:18Speaker 2: that's that was an absence that was felt, and I
- 4:20Speaker 2: don't think a lot of artists can say that.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Absolutely appreciate And I.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Got to be honest too. I don't know about these guys,
- 4:25Speaker 1: but I'm tired of being asked every day when we're
- 4:27Speaker 1: gonna get back together. So I'm kind of glad we
- 4:30Speaker 1: got the answer. Question gets a little bit, well, it
- 4:33Speaker 1: let up five years of it is a lot.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Be like I mean, and regardless of how it is,
- 4:40Speaker 2: be like how many times you walk them to your
- 4:41Speaker 2: friend and be like, hey, when are you ever going
- 4:43Speaker 2: to call her back? It's like you don't know, you
- 4:45Speaker 2: don't your own business, right. I don't want to put
- 4:49Speaker 2: the cart before the horse. This, this reunion is really
- 4:53Speaker 2: what it is right now. Would you call it reunion
- 4:55Speaker 2: versus the bands back together?
- 4:57Speaker 4: I would call it celebration of twenty five years now,
- 5:00Speaker 4: you know, because it's that's really the focus. You know,
- 5:02Speaker 4: it's just to just to give it all back to
- 5:04Speaker 4: the fans. You know, we've had five years of this
- 5:06Speaker 4: stuff build up and COVID. You know, nobody wants to
- 5:10Speaker 4: end that way. So this is just we're gonna knock
- 5:12Speaker 4: these out and see what see what happens.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know, I gotta date these guys again before I
- 5:18Speaker 1: jump into marriage with them.
- 5:19Speaker 4: You.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I want to see if they I want to see
- 5:21Speaker 1: if they put out, see.
- 5:24Speaker 4: What I can get to with these boys.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Listen, I feel like you all are second base for
- 5:28Speaker 3: the first day. Definitely got the second base.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Let me ask you, guys, anybody that looks up your
- 5:37Speaker 2: name in a streaming platformer on YouTube, there is a
- 5:40Speaker 2: long list of phenomenal songs. Obviously, the partnership with Disney
- 5:43Speaker 2: and the Cars franchise was massively successful, But everybody has misses, right,
- 5:50Speaker 2: And I love to ask, what's a song that Whether
- 5:54Speaker 2: it was something you wrote, you were you were in
- 5:56Speaker 2: on the right, or maybe just hit your inbox that
- 5:59Speaker 2: you passed on and ended up big for somebody else. Now,
- 6:02Speaker 2: let me preface this with the song has to work
- 6:04Speaker 2: for you, right. Just because it's a hit for somebody
- 6:07Speaker 2: else doesn't mean it just didn't feel.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Right for you. You have to live with it.
- 6:10Speaker 2: George Straight told Kenny Chesney told us he passed on
- 6:14Speaker 2: check yes or No, And that's one of George Strait's
- 6:17Speaker 2: biggest songs, especially for more current country fans, right, So
- 6:19Speaker 2: what's a song like that for Rascal Flats.
- 6:21Speaker 1: There there was a song by that we got pitched
- 6:25Speaker 1: first that we passed on called Chase and Airplanes that
- 6:28Speaker 1: Gary Allen wrote that was ended up being a really
- 6:30Speaker 1: big hit for him. And you know, it's now it
- 6:34Speaker 1: sounds like a Gary Allen song, but I feel like
- 6:36Speaker 1: it would have been a great Rascal Flats and.
- 6:38Speaker 5: The opposite of that. Like Keith Urbin had These Days
- 6:42Speaker 5: on hold for a while and he let it go
- 6:45Speaker 5: and we we were able to record it, and so
- 6:47Speaker 5: that became a good hit for.
- 6:48Speaker 1: H And I've told me that when he played These Days,
- 6:52Speaker 1: he was like, Keith, I feel like we need to
- 6:53Speaker 1: cut this man, it's gonna be big. And he gets no,
- 6:55Speaker 1: night doesn't sound like me noting on it.
- 6:59Speaker 2: The music is way better than your impression, I'm gonna
- 7:01Speaker 2: be honest.
- 7:03Speaker 4: The other one we passed on to that was a
- 7:05Speaker 4: big hit was the Ald and Kelly Clark's and oh
- 7:10Speaker 4: but we're already done with with Natasa so we couldn't
- 7:13Speaker 4: have to but that, you know, but that was giant
- 7:17Speaker 4: song too.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Hey, keep pitching and stuff. We'll keep passing big hits.
- 7:23Speaker 3: For somebody else. Professionals, guys keep Niceville.
- 7:29Speaker 5: It's some songs you record and all of a sudden
- 7:32Speaker 5: they've become a single. You're like, well, I didn't see
- 7:34Speaker 5: that coming.
- 7:34Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 7:35Speaker 3: What's the biggest surprise hit that's in your library?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Surprise hit?
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah that maybe you didn't believe in and you're like, sure,
- 7:42Speaker 3: let's roll the dice.
- 7:45Speaker 4: I would I know what I know, well, I know
- 7:48Speaker 4: what skin definitely, and it's just how it broke us down.
- 7:52Speaker 4: But it was kind of like, gosh, do we attack
- 7:54Speaker 4: it cancer? A song about cancer.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Out to a remember we put it as a Hitten
- 8:01Speaker 1: track on the CD too.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Yeah, Jay's like, if it's going to be on the album,
- 8:04Speaker 5: it's got to be hidding because I hate this song.
- 8:09Speaker 3: It was, yeah, I know what it did.
- 8:13Speaker 4: The first time we heard it, you know, we were
- 8:14Speaker 4: just emotional wreck, but we were like, yeah, y, I
- 8:17Speaker 4: don't know.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It wasn't that I hated the song and the subject
- 8:20Speaker 1: matter had touched our families in so many different ways
- 8:23Speaker 1: because we've dealt with cancer so much in my family
- 8:26Speaker 1: that I was just uncomfortable every time I heard the song,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and I didn't want to be the poster children for
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, singing songs about cancer, and it was it
- 8:35Speaker 1: was hard for me. But when we started hearing the
- 8:38Speaker 1: stories and seeing people come to the shows where were
- 8:41Speaker 1: the couple came stood in front and the kid had
- 8:44Speaker 1: shaved his head and took his hat off. And when
- 8:46Speaker 1: you start seeing stuff like that and you start getting
- 8:49Speaker 1: those goosebumps, you realize that you know, there's somebody bigger
- 8:53Speaker 1: than us at work, and there's a reason that everything happens.
- 8:55Speaker 4: And the stories were of how much it helped them,
- 9:00Speaker 4: you know what I mean. We're telling one side of
- 9:03Speaker 4: the story, but it was just what that song did
- 9:06Speaker 4: to people going through it are people, you know, just
- 9:10Speaker 4: it was crazy. The reaction was different than what we
- 9:13Speaker 4: thought when we heard it, you know.
- 9:14Speaker 5: And that's one thing you can't have anymore, is hidden
- 9:16Speaker 5: tracks true.
- 9:18Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I used to once a month, we used to do
- 9:22Speaker 1: this thing where we'd sit Joe on in the middle
- 9:23Speaker 1: of the stage and shave his head while we were
- 9:26Speaker 1: singing it. And it was gosh, I missed those moments.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I'm kidding.
- 9:30Speaker 3: We didn't do it.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Listen, I say, you do it anyway. I could talk
- 9:33Speaker 2: to y'all forever, But I know my time is tight.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Last thing I want to ask is as you guys
- 9:38Speaker 2: decided to get together and celebrate is the word we're using.
- 9:42Speaker 2: You know what all you've done in all that country
- 9:45Speaker 2: music has been able to wrap its arms around. Who
- 9:49Speaker 2: made the first phone call, our first email, or the
- 9:52Speaker 2: first text.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Really my wife calt Gary and said, if you don't
- 9:55Speaker 1: get Jay out of the house and put him back
- 9:56Speaker 1: on the road, I'm gonna kill him.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Yeah. So I immediately Paul Jay like, hey man, look
- 10:03Speaker 4: if you want if you want to see tomorrow, tomorrow.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Gary and I started texting with each other toward the
- 10:09Speaker 1: end of last year, after around around the holidays, just
- 10:12Speaker 1: checking in really and just saying, you know, Merry Christmas
- 10:15Speaker 1: or whatever. And then we started reminiscing about some memories,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and we started texting back and forth one night, laughing
- 10:21Speaker 1: about some things that had happened and kind of lamented
- 10:24Speaker 1: that we missed making memories together and making music together.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And that's how the conversation really took off. And then
- 10:33Speaker 1: we started talking more seriously about it. Like he said,
- 10:35Speaker 1: probably three or four months ago, we started going, well,
- 10:38Speaker 1: what if what if we went out and just did
- 10:40Speaker 1: a handful of shows to celebrate and love back on
- 10:43Speaker 1: some of our fans, and the ball got rolling from
- 10:46Speaker 1: there and here we are, and I'm really grateful to
- 10:49Speaker 1: be here today.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I'm listen.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I don't want to again KRT before the horse, and
- 10:54Speaker 2: I don't know if the tables would by my knock
- 10:56Speaker 2: on it.
- 10:57Speaker 3: We're glad that we're able to celebrate Rascal Flats. We're
- 11:00Speaker 3: hoping that there's a reason to celebrate even more.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Thank you soon, Thanks bunks, welcome back guys, Thank you
- 11:06Speaker 2: Boom boom.
- 11:07Speaker 3: You look at that and I was almost on time.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Could I get
