Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star-Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKR-FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:08Speaker 2: It's an Athletic Center Seahawks headquarters. Headlines are brought to
- 0:10Speaker 2: you by Frostbrood. Coors Light is cold as the Rockies.
- 0:13Speaker 2: The Seahawks are in this building cramming a week's worth
- 0:16Speaker 2: of preparation into three days. They leave tomorrow to play
- 0:18Speaker 2: the Broncos in Denver on Thursday night. Zach Charbonnet not
- 0:22Speaker 2: expected to play, Coach Mike McDonald says. So, more Emmanuel Wilson,
- 0:27Speaker 2: more George Helani. Hey, maybe Robert Henry Jr. We're going
- 0:31Speaker 2: to talk about the running back situation for the Seahawks
- 0:33Speaker 2: right now. It's not great. The Rams missed a field
- 0:36Speaker 2: goal in overtime. The Bills made theirs in overtime. Buffalo 37,
- 0:40Speaker 2: Los Angeles 34. Jessamyn, the Rams aren't going undefeated. I
- 0:44Speaker 2: don't know if people realize that.
- 0:46Speaker 3: No, nobody does.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Except for the Patriots when they lost the Super Bowl
- 0:51Speaker 4: to the Giants.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Turns out you can't win the Super Bowl in March
- 0:55Speaker 2: and June. Who knew?
- 0:57Speaker 5: No, you can't.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Rams are 2-3 after being anointed as Super Bowl champions
- 1:01Speaker 2: in advance. NFC West now is 49ers 5-0, of course.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Seahawks 3-2. Rams are 2-3. The Cardinals are 1-4 this
- 1:09Speaker 2: coming week. It's Seahawks at Broncos on Thursday. 49ers are
- 1:12Speaker 2: hosting the Commanders next Monday night. And the Rams are
- 1:15Speaker 2: hosting the Cardinals on Sunday. The NFL announced a one-game
- 1:18Speaker 2: suspension without pay for 49ers linebacker Dre Greenloff for head-butting
- 1:22Speaker 2: helmetless Ernest Jones on the Seahawks' sidelines during the game
- 1:25Speaker 2: on Sunday.
- 1:25Speaker 6: Boo-hoo.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm surprised he only got one game, actually. The Kraken
- 1:30Speaker 2: are 4-2, 2-0 on the five-game road trip. They play
- 1:33Speaker 2: the Flyers in Philadelphia today. That's 3-30 with Mike Benton
- 1:36Speaker 2: on the pregame show and a 4 p.m. puck drop
- 1:38Speaker 2: with Everett Fitzhugh, Al Kaninsky right here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:43Speaker 2: The Washington Huskies are likely to beat it without starting
- 1:46Speaker 2: quarterback DeMond Williams. He has a rib injury. Quarterback that
- 1:50Speaker 2: gave $ 4 million in NIL money, too, for the year.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Number two, Elijah Brown's on track to start Friday at Purdue.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Washington State Cougars, 1-5, play Saturday at Oregon State, who
- 2:00Speaker 2: are red hot. Major League Baseball playoffs, Guardians beat the
- 2:03Speaker 2: Rays in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.
- 2:07Speaker 2: The Brewers are now up 2-0 on the Dodgers after
- 2:10Speaker 2: winning again in Milwaukee yesterday. Now on with the Tuesday show.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre. Justin's back at our Elliott Bay Studios.
- 2:17Speaker 3: All by my lonesome, so send in those chalkbacks, please.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, the iHeartRadio app, 933KJR. com. There's a red microphone button
- 2:24Speaker 2: at the top. If you do that... And she will definitely,
- 2:28Speaker 2: Jessamyn will play that back at 1130.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Of course I will.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Not that I'm disappointed.
- 2:34Speaker 4: I love hearing other voices. Because the ones in my
- 2:38Speaker 4: head are driving me crazy.
- 2:43Speaker 2: How's everything today? Rams lost, so that's good.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Yep, we're cool with that.
- 2:49Speaker 2: That's a good Seattle sports night. We have quarterback situations
- 2:53Speaker 2: across the state, huh? Caden Penick is benched. That's what
- 2:57Speaker 2: the Cougs coach Kirby Morris said yesterday. We talked about
- 3:01Speaker 2: this a couple weeks ago, and you didn't think maybe
- 3:03Speaker 2: then it was going to happen, and then after Utah State,
- 3:05Speaker 2: you kind of thought this might be coming, huh, Jessamyn?
- 3:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they need something of a shakeup. And
- 3:10Speaker 4: Kirby Moore calling the offense was one of them that
- 3:13Speaker 4: came in. But Caden has not helped himself in postgame
- 3:17Speaker 4: press conferences.
- 3:19Speaker 3: And he is, you know, it's I know that people
- 3:22Speaker 3: will see what's.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Put out there online from a press conference, but I
- 3:25Speaker 4: get to watch him on the sideline the entire time.
- 3:28Speaker 2: He is amazing.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Really positive on the sideline. He's never too up. He's
- 3:33Speaker 3: never too down.
- 3:35Speaker 4: When our kicker was having huge, Jack Stephens was having
- 3:39Speaker 4: huge issues in the beginning of this year, he was
- 3:41Speaker 4: the one. He was sitting there all by himself on
- 3:44Speaker 4: the bench. And it was Caden Pinnock who came over
- 3:47Speaker 4: and talked to him. It was the only person that did.
- 3:51Speaker 4: And so I have not, I think that there's misperceptions
- 3:54Speaker 4: about him, but I do also think that this offense
- 3:58Speaker 4: deserves a little bit of a shakeup considering what we've
- 4:00Speaker 4: been seeing.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Redshirt freshman, Owen Eshelman is going to be the starting
- 4:04Speaker 2: quarterback Saturday in Corvallis against the Beavers. So Ian was
- 4:09Speaker 2: just going on about Caden Penick and his postgame press conference.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I saw where he said, oh, the internet warriors are
- 4:15Speaker 2: going to be after me now or whatever. That wasn't
- 4:17Speaker 2: a good look. But is that the gist of it?
- 4:19Speaker 4: Uh, That was what the big quote that came out
- 4:24Speaker 4: of it was, is that instead of, he was trying
- 4:28Speaker 4: to say, and I really wish I could do media
- 4:31Speaker 4: training with these guys, to be honest. But what he
- 4:33Speaker 4: was trying to say is, I depend on my guys
- 4:35Speaker 4: and people are going to come after me for it.
- 4:37Speaker 4: And this is my observation. So I don't know. I
- 4:40Speaker 4: did not talk to Pinnock about this. But I'm just
- 4:44Speaker 4: saying that that was the point he was trying to
- 4:46Speaker 4: make and it just came off terribly.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 3: It just did.
- 4:51Speaker 2: If they were 5-1 instead of 1-5, people wouldn't care
- 4:53Speaker 2: what he said. That's also true.
- 4:56Speaker 4: They're looking for someone to blame right now. And Kirby's
- 4:59Speaker 4: brand new, and so is Pinnock.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 5:01Speaker 4: So who to blame? And I think both of them
- 5:03Speaker 4: are taking a lot of arrows right now.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So is DeMond Williams. We know the story here in
- 5:08Speaker 2: Seattle when the University of Washington thought they lost DeMond
- 5:11Speaker 2: Williams to LSU, and then they said, no, no, no,
- 5:13Speaker 2: we have an NIL agreement with you for $ 4 million
- 5:16Speaker 2: for this year.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 5:17Speaker 2: And we're going to enforce that. And the Big Ten
- 5:19Speaker 2: got involved, and they threatened lawsuits. So he stayed. He
- 5:23Speaker 2: stayed now. They've lost their first three Big Ten games.
- 5:26Speaker 2: He can't see over the line out of the pocket, apparently.
- 5:29Speaker 2: He gets hurt against Iowa when they were getting absolutely
- 5:32Speaker 2: boat raced on their home field by the Hawkeyes on
- 5:35Speaker 2: Friday night. His replacement comes in, the Stanford transfer, and
- 5:39Speaker 2: he lights up the Hawkeyes, 28-39 in about a little
- 5:42Speaker 2: over a half of play. And now DeMond Williams is injured.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And Jet Fish saying yesterday it doesn't look like he's
- 5:51Speaker 2: going to play on Friday night at Purdue, which means
- 5:55Speaker 2: Elijah Brown now practicing with the ones to start Friday
- 5:58Speaker 2: in West Lafayette, Indiana. You're going to hear Hugh Millen,
- 6:01Speaker 2: a former University of Washington Orange Bowl quarterback and an
- 6:05Speaker 2: NFL quarterback who has a very vested interest in this situation.
- 6:09Speaker 3: A damn fine analyst.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And he's our quarterback one, of course, here on KJR.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He's going to weigh in on the quarterback situation on
- 6:18Speaker 2: Montlake heading into the game on Friday night against Purdue.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You'll hear from him and what he said about it
- 6:25Speaker 2: and the whole DeMond Williams situation. The fans are starting
- 6:28Speaker 2: to get splintered about this whole thing.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the state of Washington is in a
- 6:33Speaker 4: very big quarterback situation.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Professionally and collegiate.
- 6:39Speaker 2: There's the Seahawks Super Bowl winning quarterback. Sam Darnold, who
- 6:42Speaker 2: led the NFL in turnovers last year with 20 during
- 6:45Speaker 2: the regular season with five interceptions in three games since
- 6:49Speaker 2: he returned from that glute injury. There's not a quarterback
- 6:52Speaker 2: controversy here, although Drew Locke shined and was the second-best
- 6:57Speaker 2: passer rating quarterback in the NFL.
- 6:58Speaker 3: No, I didn't say controversy that everyone was in. I
- 7:01Speaker 3: said situation.
- 7:02Speaker 2: No, I'm making it clear for the listeners that we're
- 7:04Speaker 2: not trying to equate a quarterback controversy in Seattle. It
- 7:08Speaker 2: is Sam Darnold, and it will continue to be Sam Darnold.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But there are issues for sure, especially with the short
- 7:14Speaker 2: passing game and the interceptions that he's thrown early in games.
- 7:18Speaker 2: The first play against the Chargers– right after the Seahawks
- 7:21Speaker 2: had gotten an interception in Chargers territory. And then the
- 7:24Speaker 2: third play against the 49ers that handed San Francisco its
- 7:28Speaker 2: first touchdown. Both throws into tight coverage that were ill-advised
- 7:32Speaker 2: throws from a veteran quarterback. The situation at quarterback, it's
- 7:38Speaker 2: not great.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Can I ask you a question from your professional expertise? Sure.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Do you think that– you know how disappointed he was
- 7:45Speaker 4: after the Super Bowl because he wanted to let loose
- 7:48Speaker 4: a little bit more?
- 7:49Speaker 3: But he did what he had to do.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Do you think they let him loose a little bit
- 7:53Speaker 4: and he's not as good as they would have liked
- 7:56Speaker 4: at letting it loose?
- 7:58Speaker 2: I think he's not as good as they would have
- 7:59Speaker 2: liked because his running game is not good. It's not consistent.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And that changes every quarterback.
- 8:04Speaker 3: It does.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And he does not have a threat to run that
- 8:08Speaker 2: defenses have to honor. Yeah, they know they've had a
- 8:11Speaker 2: couple of spates– of rushing against the Patriots and against
- 8:14Speaker 2: the woebegone Cardinals. But overall, teams aren't scheming. I mean,
- 8:18Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan and his defensive staff, Raheem Morris, they didn't
- 8:21Speaker 2: come into that game Sunday going, we've got to stop
- 8:23Speaker 2: this running game. It was, let's pressure Sam Darnold into mistakes.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And that's now the current gameplay. And you're going to
- 8:29Speaker 2: get it Thursday night in Denver because the Broncos are
- 8:32Speaker 2: one of the most aggressive defenses in the league. They're
- 8:34Speaker 2: a lot like the Seahawks. They do a lot of
- 8:36Speaker 2: smoke and mirrors before the snap. They trick the quarterback
- 8:40Speaker 2: and play call her. And they come after you. And
- 8:43Speaker 2: that is the book right now on the Seahawks offense.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Forget about the run. They've got a slow running back
- 8:49Speaker 2: who you're not going to get outrun. Don't worry about
- 8:52Speaker 2: Emmanuel Wilson beating you in the open field. And let's
- 8:55Speaker 2: go after the quarterback. And until they get a running
- 8:58Speaker 2: game that's a threat to change that, defenses are going
- 9:02Speaker 2: to play that way. It's so much easier to defend
- 9:04Speaker 2: a quarterback when you don't have a running game. And
- 9:06Speaker 2: the Seahawks have a, let's just face it, right now,
- 9:10Speaker 2: With Zach Charbonnet still not back from the reconstructive knee surgery,
- 9:13Speaker 2: with Jadarian Price the number one draft pick on injured reserve,
- 9:17Speaker 2: the Seahawks just have a bunch of Joes in the backfield.
- 9:20Speaker 2: They do. They have a 500-yard rusher free agent from
- 9:24Speaker 2: Green Bay they signed to a one-year minimum salary deal.
- 9:27Speaker 2: They have a third-year undrafted rookie from three years ago
- 9:31Speaker 2: out of Boise State who's overextended in the role that
- 9:33Speaker 2: he's here for, which is special teams and a third
- 9:36Speaker 2: down blocking and pass catching back. And they have... Two
- 9:40Speaker 2: unproven running backs that have been practice squad players their
- 9:44Speaker 2: whole career. Vellis Jones Jr. signed up for the practice
- 9:47Speaker 2: squad last week. And Robert Henry Jr., who was not
- 9:50Speaker 2: even worthy of being on the active roster for the
- 9:52Speaker 2: game on Sunday, that they had signed to the 53-man
- 9:56Speaker 2: roster last week off the commander's practice And that's it.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I mean, there aren't a lot of defensive coordinators around
- 10:02Speaker 2: the league that are going to start game planning against
- 10:04Speaker 2: Velas Jones Jr., Robert Henry Jr., George Zolani, and Emmanuel Wilson.
- 10:10Speaker 2: They're not going to, oh, we've got to spend time
- 10:13Speaker 2: scheming up this run game.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Do you think that could be an advantage at some point?
- 10:18Speaker 4: The fact that there's no tape?
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Not until they run the ball. I mean, they're trying,
- 10:22Speaker 2: but they're not running the ball consistently enough for any
- 10:24Speaker 2: defense to have to honor it. And then they go
- 10:27Speaker 2: after Sam Darnold. And it's third and long instead of
- 10:29Speaker 2: third and two and three. And to me, that's the
- 10:32Speaker 2: biggest difference in Sam Darnold right now. And then last year,
- 10:34Speaker 2: I mean, they were at this point last year, three
- 10:37Speaker 2: and two, and they were turning the ball over with
- 10:39Speaker 2: an alarming rate. And this is when they took off.
- 10:41Speaker 2: But the difference is they had Kenneth Walker and Zach
- 10:43Speaker 2: Charbonnet in the backfield then. And they don't now. And
- 10:47Speaker 2: one of it is by their own design, and the
- 10:49Speaker 2: other is because of Charbonnet's reconstructive knee surgery from February.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You're going to hear where the Seahawks are at on
- 10:56Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet for this week and beyond. You'll hear from
- 11:00Speaker 2: Coach Mike McDonald about that during the show. Jory Epstein
- 11:05Speaker 2: is a senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. She makes
- 11:07Speaker 2: her weekly visit on the NFL tour around the league
- 11:11Speaker 2: at 11 o'clock. Thank you, Zeke's Pizza. Let's go.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Zeke'sPizza.com.
- 11:15Speaker 2: We'll talk to her at 11 o'clock from New York. 11.30,
- 11:19Speaker 2: we'll read back your texts and talkbacks on the Tacoma
- 11:21Speaker 2: Dodge text line 49451. And talkbacks are on the iHeartRadio
- 11:25Speaker 2: app or our website, 933KGR. com. A little red microphone button
- 11:29Speaker 2: at the top, 30 seconds or less. 11.35, it'll be.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre with the comms on our Factor Fiction pick today. Uh-oh.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Buckle up, folks.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I'm batting 500. I'm even Steven over here.
- 11:43Speaker 2: We are more than enough, though, for the rest of
- 11:45Speaker 2: the station.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Well, we are leading everyone.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's a low bar, I know. It is a low bar.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Hey, I'll take the high of a low. That's good.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel gives us the opportunity to win
- 11:59Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 each week, $ 10, 000 by the end of the contest
- 12:01Speaker 2: on December 11th. And then at 11.45, Ian Furness will
- 12:05Speaker 2: join me to talk about what's on his show, 12
- 12:06Speaker 2: until 2. I think it's a shorter show, maybe even
- 12:10Speaker 2: 1 today.
- 12:10Speaker 4: It is a little bit short because we do have
- 12:13Speaker 4: the Kraken, I believe, at 4 p.m.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah, 4 p.m. Puck Rock in Philadelphia. It's a 3.30
- 12:19Speaker 2: pregame show with Mike Benton. Let's get back to the Seahawks.
- 12:24Speaker 2: The question becomes, do they have a Sam Darnold problem? Well,
- 12:28Speaker 2: they have a turnover problem. I'm not sure, Jessamyn, they
- 12:31Speaker 2: have a Sam Darnold problem yet. I do think it's
- 12:34Speaker 2: more of a run game problem. But, I mean, there
- 12:38Speaker 2: were people during the game on Twitter, which I know
- 12:41Speaker 2: is just a cesspool of anything and everything.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It used to be so fun.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Now they're yelling for Drew Locke to come in.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Well, he did shine. I mean, he did.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Is that what you want to see?
- 12:53Speaker 3: No, I want to see Sam shine. I'm just saying
- 12:57Speaker 3: I get it.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I get it from Twitter fingers that that would be
- 13:00Speaker 4: a thing.
- 13:00Speaker 2: 49451 on Tacoma Dodge text line, are you in that camp?
- 13:05Speaker 2: You've seen enough interceptions, three, five in the last three games,
- 13:08Speaker 2: that you want Drew Locke in? That's not the plan
- 13:12Speaker 2: here in Renton, I'll tell you that. But is that
- 13:14Speaker 2: what you want? Are you at it now? You're Super
- 13:18Speaker 2: Bowl winning quarterback five games into the following season. They
- 13:22Speaker 2: are at the same place they were last October.
- 13:24Speaker 4: I was just going to say, they have a winning record,
- 13:27Speaker 4: and they lost to a very good San Francisco team.
- 13:30Speaker 2: They lost this time last year. In Week 5, they
- 13:33Speaker 2: lost at home to the Creamsicles. Tampa Bay, you remember,
- 13:37Speaker 2: it was the throwback Jersey game.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And that was a similar game in that the Seahawks
- 13:42Speaker 2: gave that away, the most glaring mistake being at the
- 13:44Speaker 2: end of the game when Sam Darnold threw a pass
- 13:46Speaker 2: off the defensive lineman's helmet, intercepted by the Buccaneers. Handed
- 13:49Speaker 2: him the winning field goal, 38-35 loss. Another high-scoring loss
- 13:54Speaker 2: to make him 3-2. And Darnold was near the league
- 13:57Speaker 2: in interceptions. Right now he leads, as Ian pointed out
- 14:00Speaker 2: on the show yesterday, Sam Darnold leads the NFL in
- 14:04Speaker 2: percentage of passes intercepted so far this season. He doesn't
- 14:07Speaker 2: lead in total interceptions because he has fewer attempts because
- 14:09Speaker 2: of the game in 3-4s he missed because of the
- 14:12Speaker 2: glute injury. But in percentage of his throws intercepted, he
- 14:15Speaker 2: leads the league. And this is where he was last
- 14:17Speaker 2: year at this time. And at this Last year at
- 14:20Speaker 2: this time is the point that they took off and
- 14:22Speaker 2: they lost only one other game the next four and
- 14:25Speaker 2: a half months after this at 3-2. And that's, of course,
- 14:29Speaker 2: the four interception day he had in Englewood against the
- 14:31Speaker 2: Rams last November when they lost only 21-19. It bears repeating,
- 14:38Speaker 2: but the only time in the last 12, actually 13 months,
- 14:44Speaker 2: counting the week one loss to San Francisco at home
- 14:47Speaker 2: 17-13 last year, season, the beginning of the season, the
- 14:51Speaker 2: only time they've lost in the last year plus is
- 14:53Speaker 2: when they turn the ball over. I mentioned yesterday, under
- 14:57Speaker 2: Mike McDonald, when they turn the ball over zero or
- 15:00Speaker 2: one times, 21-1. When they turn the ball over two
- 15:04Speaker 2: or more times, 9-10. The Tampa Bay game I just mentioned,
- 15:09Speaker 2: the San Francisco week one game when Nick Bosa pushed
- 15:12Speaker 2: Abe Lucas into Sam Darnold who dropped the ball on
- 15:14Speaker 2: the 10-yard line with 30 seconds left going in, down four,
- 15:17Speaker 2: they lose that game. The L.A. game of Sam Darnold's
- 15:20Speaker 2: career-high four interceptions. The Washington game last month, Darnold throws
- 15:26Speaker 2: two interceptions coming off injury, three turnovers, and Jadarian Bryce
- 15:29Speaker 2: drops the ball, gets benched. 21 points handed to the
- 15:33Speaker 2: Commanders and a 33-31 loss. And then Sunday, same thing.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Three turnovers, 21 points handed to the 49ers, all their
- 15:40Speaker 2: points in the first half. The 49ers scoring drives in
- 15:43Speaker 2: the first half on Sunday, 18 yards, 10 yards, and
- 15:46Speaker 2: zero yards. because they recovered a fumble in the end zone.
- 15:49Speaker 2: So this team only, because of their defense, this team
- 15:53Speaker 2: only loses when the offense turns the ball over. Only. Now,
- 15:58Speaker 2: the turnover margin number is always a factor in sports
- 16:01Speaker 2: and football, and it's always a correlation to winning, but
- 16:05Speaker 2: not this extreme. And that's because of the Seahawks' defense.
- 16:09Speaker 2: If they can get Darnold a running game, running backs
- 16:13Speaker 2: who don't drop the ball, and Darnold doesn't throw interceptions,
- 16:16Speaker 2: they'll win. They'll beat Denver. They'll beat Kansas City. They'll
- 16:19Speaker 2: beat Chicago. They'll win. They'll be 6-2 coming out of
- 16:24Speaker 2: that Monday night game November 2nd against Chicago. They will
- 16:28Speaker 2: if they don't turn the ball over. It's so simple,
- 16:32Speaker 2: but it's true because of how Mike McDonald's defense continues
- 16:35Speaker 2: to play. They only gave up 11 points, and they
- 16:39Speaker 2: were all in the fourth quarter. San Francisco, after three
- 16:43Speaker 2: quarters the other day, had like 140 yards of offense.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I mean, they were doing nothing other than getting handed
- 16:50Speaker 2: points by the Seahawks offense. It was much like Week
- 16:54Speaker 2: 18 last year in the divisional playoffs last year when
- 16:57Speaker 2: Shanahan and Purdy were doing nothing. And then in the
- 17:01Speaker 2: fourth quarter, they go at Josh Jobe with Mike Evans.
- 17:04Speaker 2: That's the other question for the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 17:07Speaker 2: You're going to hear the answers that Mike McDonald had
- 17:10Speaker 2: to why didn't you just double-team Mike Evans and help
- 17:13Speaker 2: out Josh Jones? How you felt about how Mike McDonald
- 17:16Speaker 2: played that? He had an answer yesterday that mirrors what
- 17:19Speaker 2: we talked about, Jessamyn. He does not want an offense
- 17:22Speaker 2: dictating to him how he plays defense.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Which I love. You play you.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 17:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And it cost him in the fourth quarter against San Francisco.
- 17:31Speaker 2: But he does not want Shanahan to put him in
- 17:34Speaker 2: a situation where he's taking from other parts of his
- 17:36Speaker 2: defense that he wants to play. He didn't want to
- 17:39Speaker 2: double-team Mike Evans because what it would take out of
- 17:41Speaker 2: the rest of his defense. He didn't want to put
- 17:44Speaker 2: Devin Witherspoon, travel him on him, Same reason. And you'll
- 17:47Speaker 2: hear Mike McDonald's answer from yesterday when asked, why didn't
- 17:50Speaker 2: you just double-team Mike Evans, especially late in the game?
- 17:53Speaker 2: That's coming up, too. Up next, the running back situation
- 17:57Speaker 2: for the Seahawks. What they're taking into Denver Thursday night.
- 17:59Speaker 2: What's Zach Charbonnet's status? What about Robert Henry Jr.? We
- 18:02Speaker 2: haven't even seen him yet. He's taken up a spot
- 18:04Speaker 2: on the active roster, but he wasn't even active to
- 18:07Speaker 2: play on Sunday against the 49ers. And again, why didn't
- 18:10Speaker 2: Mike McDonald just double-team Mike Evans when he was repeating
- 18:13Speaker 2: his repeatedly beating Josh Jobe one-on-one on Sunday? The head
- 18:18Speaker 2: coach will answer that next on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back
- 18:47Speaker 2: to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, Seahawks headquarters, where there's
- 18:50Speaker 2: a practice day today, an unusual Tuesday practice day. It's
- 18:54Speaker 2: their fullest practice of the week because tomorrow they're leaving
- 18:57Speaker 2: for Denver after practice for a Thursday night game, a
- 19:00Speaker 2: condensed week before they play the Broncos. They're wearing their
- 19:04Speaker 2: throwback whites, the white over light gray.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I like those.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of fans love those, the white jerseys,
- 19:11Speaker 2: silver helmets.
- 19:12Speaker 3: I'm not calling myself a fan over here. I'm just
- 19:14Speaker 3: saying I like the jersey.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Gray, silver, whatever they call it. And gray, silver pants
- 19:21Speaker 2: under white jerseys on Thursday night. The Broncos are going
- 19:23Speaker 2: to wear their old AFC West uniforms with the.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Oh, they're throwing back as well.
- 19:29Speaker 2: The horse that spouts... What is that? Smoke, fire, whatever
- 19:34Speaker 2: it is.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I think it's just cold air coming out of the nostrils.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Colorado horse.
- 19:40Speaker 3: That mile-high air, yes.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Old AFC rivals with throwback jerseys. 90s-style jerseys on Thursday
- 19:49Speaker 2: night at 515 would be local time. You doing your
- 19:53Speaker 2: thing down at Thomas Rawls?
- 19:55Speaker 3: I sure am. I cannot wait. Down at the Buckleshoot Casino.
- 19:59Speaker 4: We are actually, because it's the only, we do these
- 20:02Speaker 4: away game watch parties, and it's the closest to Halloween
- 20:06Speaker 4: that we'll have an away game, so we're doing a
- 20:08Speaker 4: costume contest. Oh!
- 20:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 2: What are you wearing?
- 20:11Speaker 4: Ghosts of Running Back's Pass. Yep, that's what I'm going as.
- 20:17Speaker 4: I just have a huge ghost costume. I'm not a
- 20:20Speaker 4: cute cat or something. Yeah, no, but it is super fun.
- 20:24Speaker 4: And Thomas, and I've said this before, but what people
- 20:27Speaker 4: don't realize that at Muckleshoot, when Thomas shows up, when
- 20:31Speaker 4: an athlete shows up, you're not expecting to get to
- 20:34Speaker 4: spend time. Thomas spends time with everybody. It is so
- 20:38Speaker 4: fun to just watch him and he loves it so much.
- 20:40Speaker 4: He gets in great conversations with people. I have to
- 20:43Speaker 4: go find him to bring him up on stage to
- 20:45Speaker 4: give away prizes because he's just having fun with the
- 20:48Speaker 4: people who show up.
- 20:49Speaker 3: So come on down.
- 20:52Speaker 2: That is Thursday at 5.15 kickoff. What time does it start? 4.30,
- 20:56Speaker 2: 4 o'clock doors open?
- 20:58Speaker 4: Well, yes, and it is free to get in just
- 21:00Speaker 4: so that people know. So you can come early. Yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 4: there is kind of limited seating, but we do give
- 21:06Speaker 4: away a couple of just VIP awesome Lazy Boy chairs
- 21:10Speaker 4: where you can watch like you're in your living room
- 21:12Speaker 4: in the VIP section.
- 21:13Speaker 3: So that's super fun, too. So show up early if
- 21:16Speaker 3: you want to do that.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Don't worry. There's slot machines and card tables.
- 21:20Speaker 4: There's plenty of seats outside to have fun. But I
- 21:24Speaker 4: think you'll really enjoy. And we don't interrupt the game
- 21:27Speaker 4: at all. We let you watch the game during commercial
- 21:31Speaker 4: breaks or quarter breaks.
- 21:32Speaker 3: And at halftime, we'll give away prizes. But we are
- 21:35Speaker 3: just there to have fun with you.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Seahawks heading on the road again. They're 16-3 on the
- 21:40Speaker 2: road since 2024. And Mike McDonald took over. That's the
- 21:43Speaker 2: best road record in the NFL in that span. Is
- 21:47Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet going to play in Denver? Well, Mike McDonald
- 21:50Speaker 2: was asked that question with the latest on Charbonnet. He
- 21:53Speaker 2: is in the second week of a 21-day practice window.
- 21:57Speaker 2: That window closes on October the 22nd, which is the
- 22:00Speaker 2: Thursday before the Sunday night game against the Kansas City
- 22:06Speaker 2: Chiefs in Seattle. The Seahawks have a 10-day mini-bye between
- 22:10Speaker 2: the Thursday night game in Denver and then their next
- 22:12Speaker 2: game at home against Kansas City. The 22nd, the Thursday
- 22:16Speaker 2: before that Kansas City game, is the end of Zach
- 22:18Speaker 2: Charbonnet's 21-day window. At that time, the Seahawks have to say, okay,
- 22:21Speaker 2: you're active, you're ready to go, and you're put on
- 22:22Speaker 2: the active roster, or they have to put him on
- 22:25Speaker 2: the physically unable to perform list for the rest of
- 22:27Speaker 2: the season, essentially injured reserve, and he would be out
- 22:30Speaker 2: for the season. No indication that the Seahawks are going
- 22:31Speaker 2: to do that, but is there any indication he's going
- 22:34Speaker 2: to play this week? Mike McDonald talks about that on
- 22:37Speaker 2: two questions here.
- 22:38Speaker 7: I'll leave it at that. As of right now, the
- 22:42Speaker 7: answer is no. subject to change. Try not to be
- 22:48Speaker 7: boxed in there, Bob.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:50Speaker 2: And wiggle room.
- 22:51Speaker 8: The plan as of now to not play him is
- 22:53Speaker 8: related to like what this week looks like, a short
- 22:55Speaker 8: week in the mode that you guys are in and
- 22:56Speaker 8: all that.
- 22:58Speaker 7: I don't want to, it's like, we have to have
- 23:01Speaker 7: consensus from all parties that it's the most, it's, he's
- 23:05Speaker 7: ready to go. He's the most confident and ready to
- 23:07Speaker 7: go that he's had enough exposure to go play an
- 23:11Speaker 7: NFL game. And, um, So those are the variables at
- 23:16Speaker 7: play here. And can one area of that equation, can
- 23:20Speaker 7: that adjust as we go?
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 7: But we're trying to do right by the process right now,
- 23:28Speaker 7: I guess, is the best way to explain it.
- 23:31Speaker 2: So no Zach Charbonnet. He won't play on Thursday night.
- 23:33Speaker 2: What about Robert Henry Jr.? Remember, the Seahawks signed him
- 23:38Speaker 2: off the commander's practice squad. NFL rules... If you sign
- 23:41Speaker 2: a player off a practice squad, he goes directly on
- 23:43Speaker 2: your 53-man roster. But the Seahawks did not have him active,
- 23:47Speaker 2: the undrafted rookie running back from Texas San Antonio. He's
- 23:50Speaker 2: a 5'9, under 200 pounds. He's a faster back. He
- 23:55Speaker 2: was known for his speed. He averaged 6.9 yards a
- 23:57Speaker 2: carry last year in college. One of the reasons he
- 24:00Speaker 2: was undrafted is he's only 5'9, 196 pounds. The other
- 24:03Speaker 2: reason is that he dropped the ball a lot. And
- 24:05Speaker 2: we've already seen that enough in the Seahawks backfield, haven't we?
- 24:08Speaker 2: So what up with Robert? Henry Jr., could he be
- 24:12Speaker 2: an option?
- 24:12Speaker 4: Yeah, we don't know that quite yet. And I know
- 24:15Speaker 4: that he might have talked about it. But, yeah, what
- 24:20Speaker 4: did you hear from him?
- 24:22Speaker 2: Well, Mike McDonald's saying he's ready to go physically, obviously,
- 24:26Speaker 2: because he's been practicing every day on the commander's practice
- 24:29Speaker 2: squad since the start. And he said he's spun up
- 24:32Speaker 2: enough on the playbook that he doesn't need to know
- 24:35Speaker 2: all of it. So what happens during the season, especially
- 24:37Speaker 2: guys that join a team in the season, is They
- 24:39Speaker 2: only work on the game plan plays. The plays that
- 24:42Speaker 2: are in this week for Denver is what Henry needs
- 24:46Speaker 2: to know. He doesn't need to know the entire playbook
- 24:49Speaker 2: they start putting in in April in OTAs, minicamps. So
- 24:54Speaker 2: he's getting piece by piece the offense, and he's only
- 24:57Speaker 2: getting it this week for the Denver game. Last week
- 24:59Speaker 2: he just got it for the San Francisco game. So
- 25:01Speaker 2: he doesn't have to know everything, McDonald made that point.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And McDonald also said, yeah, Henry's ready to go if
- 25:06Speaker 2: the opportunity presents itself. I'm here to say the opportunity
- 25:10Speaker 2: should be presenting itself on Thursday night and give fewer
- 25:13Speaker 2: carries to George Helani in running situations, especially on early
- 25:16Speaker 2: downs like we saw when he fumbled in his own
- 25:19Speaker 2: end zone. And it doesn't say anything about Velas Jones Jr.,
- 25:22Speaker 2: who is on the active roster now, was active for
- 25:25Speaker 2: the game on Sunday, but did not play one single
- 25:27Speaker 2: snap on offense. He played 22 snaps all on special teams.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And we didn't see what we saw in Washington with
- 25:34Speaker 2: Jadarian Price and benching him for fumbling. They did not
- 25:38Speaker 2: bench Wilson. They did not bench Helani. They have options.
- 25:42Speaker 2: We'll see if they go to them. Bellis Jones Jr.
- 25:44Speaker 2: is one of them. Thomas Henry is another. Robert Henry
- 25:49Speaker 2: is another one. Those are both on the active roster
- 25:51Speaker 2: now at running back because they are so thin. Those
- 25:54Speaker 2: are practice squad players that are on the 53 because
- 25:57Speaker 2: the running back situation has become so thin. It's Zach
- 26:00Speaker 2: Charbonnet not yet back and Jadarian Price still on injured reserve.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Price again, a reminder of the situation. He's Upper rib injury,
- 26:08Speaker 2: the general manager, John Schneider, has said he is first
- 26:11Speaker 2: eligible to call off the injured list not until November
- 26:14Speaker 2: 2nd when they play on a Monday night at home
- 26:16Speaker 2: against Chicago. Three straight primetime games coming up for Seattle
- 26:20Speaker 2: at Denver, 10-day break versus Kansas City, and then eight
- 26:24Speaker 2: days later against the Bears, and that Bears game on
- 26:28Speaker 2: November 2nd would be the first time Price could be
- 26:31Speaker 2: eligible to return off the injured list. So in the meantime...
- 26:36Speaker 2: With no Charbonnet this week, it seems like it's going
- 26:39Speaker 2: to be Emmanuel Wilson, number one. I don't know, Jessen,
- 26:42Speaker 2: if you have that Wilson audio from postgame when I
- 26:45Speaker 2: talked to him.
- 26:46Speaker 3: I do, I do.
- 26:47Speaker 2: I talked to him in the locker room. It's easier
- 26:49Speaker 2: to hear this audio because there wasn't any music playing.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Which is a sad reason. This was Emmanuel Wilson running
- 26:56Speaker 2: back after he fumbled against the 49ers on Sunday.
- 26:59Speaker 7: So it's tough, but anything special you can practice or
- 27:02Speaker 7: whatever to work on the ball security aspect?
- 27:05Speaker 2: Really just....
- 27:07Speaker 6: You know, when we got, like, our individual period time,
- 27:10Speaker 6: just having guys punch out the ball, everybody really, and
- 27:14Speaker 6: I'm going to talk to the defense, like, the scout
- 27:15Speaker 6: team defense, and ask them to just punch out the ball.
- 27:17Speaker 2: A little more. How do you run to try to
- 27:20Speaker 2: gain yards, but also guard against the treadmowers perfectly punching
- 27:23Speaker 2: the ball out?
- 27:24Speaker 6: Shoot, really, just ball security and just keep your legs
- 27:26Speaker 6: moving on, and I know the guys in the back
- 27:28Speaker 6: end are going to push us forward.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Did that first answer surprise you? It surprised those of
- 27:34Speaker 2: you listening, too? Don't Wouldn't they already be doing that?
- 27:38Speaker 9: Right.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Punching at the ball? Yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 3: No, and I do get that.
- 27:42Speaker 4: What I heard, his second answer was what stood out
- 27:46Speaker 4: to me about it's all about ball security.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Well, where was it?
- 27:52Speaker 2: Exactly. And the fact that he's going to talk to
- 27:56Speaker 2: the defensive players on the scout team to punch at
- 27:58Speaker 2: the ball is probably something they should have already been doing.
- 28:01Speaker 2: And Fred Warner did it exquisitely. I mean, that was
- 28:04Speaker 2: a Marvin Hagler right cross. that just nailed the ball
- 28:08Speaker 2: squarely and knocked it out of his hands. And you
- 28:10Speaker 2: heard him say, you've got to run with your legs
- 28:13Speaker 2: churning and moving upfield to keep the ball from getting
- 28:16Speaker 2: knocked out. You heard Coach Mack say yesterday, four points
- 28:19Speaker 2: of contact in country, five.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Points of contact in city. And five if you're in
- 28:22Speaker 3: the city.
- 28:23Speaker 2: In traffic. That's pretty good. My 23-year-old son loved that one. But, yeah,
- 28:29Speaker 2: it's tough for a running back, especially ones that are
- 28:31Speaker 2: still young in their careers and haven't been established themselves
- 28:34Speaker 2: and are on new teams and new situations. to run
- 28:38Speaker 2: the ball and want to get yards because that's how
- 28:40Speaker 2: you play, yet be worried primarily about ball security first.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Jadarian Price said the same thing in the locker room
- 28:46Speaker 2: after the Washington game when he got benched of, I
- 28:48Speaker 2: guess I have to now start running to just hold
- 28:51Speaker 2: the ball first and worry about the extra yards later
- 28:53Speaker 2: or not at all. Just maintain ball security being the
- 28:56Speaker 2: number one thing. All right, now on defense. It was
- 29:00Speaker 2: true early in the game when the 49ers converted their
- 29:03Speaker 2: first third down after the Sam Darnold interception. First third
- 29:06Speaker 2: down in the red zone, they went at Josh Jobe
- 29:08Speaker 2: with Mike Evans. Very next play from the two-yard line,
- 29:11Speaker 2: they went at Josh Jobe with Mike Evans for a touchdown.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Josh Jobe against San Francisco had nine targets by Brock Purdy,
- 29:19Speaker 2: seven catches allowed, 112 yards, a touchdown. Brock Purdy had
- 29:24Speaker 2: a passer rating 155.6 when they threw at Josh Jobe.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Mike Evans had six catches and seven targets against Jobe
- 29:36Speaker 2: for 98 yards. And that touchdown I talked about, that
- 29:39Speaker 2: was 14 pass routes. that Evans ran against Joe. Brock
- 29:42Speaker 2: Purdy had a perfect passer rating, 158.3 when he's targeted
- 29:46Speaker 2: Joe with Mike Evans. So why didn't they just double
- 29:50Speaker 2: team Mike Evans? Well, the coach and defensive architect answered
- 29:53Speaker 2: that question yesterday, Mike McDonald.
- 29:59Speaker 7: Uh, I'd love to. I'm assuming you're talking about with
- 30:04Speaker 7: number five yesterday. I can tell you there's reasons why
- 30:11Speaker 7: we were in certain coverages when he did catch the ball.
- 30:16Speaker 7: Sometimes you're right on why you're in those coverages and
- 30:18Speaker 7: sometimes you're not. When you double a guy, it takes
- 30:24Speaker 7: away from other areas. And just because he catches the ball,
- 30:28Speaker 7: doesn't mean that you don't have two people allocated to him. So, um,
- 30:33Speaker 7: I understand it's probably frustrating to, to, um, to see that.
- 30:37Speaker 2: And it's.
- 30:39Speaker 7: Frankly, it's a fair set. It's a fair, fair criticism. Um, but, uh,
- 30:46Speaker 7: I can tell you, like, we're trying to make the
- 30:47Speaker 7: best decision in real time that we can to help
- 30:49Speaker 7: our guys put in, in situations that we can based
- 30:51Speaker 7: off of the information we have and, Sometimes as a
- 30:54Speaker 7: play caller, you nail it and you feel great because
- 30:57Speaker 7: your player is in a great spot. Sometimes you don't
- 30:59Speaker 7: and your player isn't in the optimum spot. That happens sometimes.
- 31:06Speaker 2: The hesitation in Mike McDonald's voice answering that question. One,
- 31:12Speaker 2: is he trying to protect his player, Josh Jobe, whom
- 31:15Speaker 2: they gave an $ 8 million a year contract to in
- 31:17Speaker 2: the offseason. They chose Jobe over re-signing Reek Woolen. But two,
- 31:21Speaker 2: he doesn't want to give away state secrets into what
- 31:24Speaker 2: else in the defense he's trying to do and not
- 31:27Speaker 2: devoting a second cover man to Evans. But, Jessamyn, the criticism,
- 31:31Speaker 2: when he says it's a fair criticism, Evans was the
- 31:35Speaker 2: only downfield threat they had. I mean, yeah, they had
- 31:37Speaker 2: George Kittle, but Kittle had a huge drop early in
- 31:39Speaker 2: the game that changed things that could have sparked a
- 31:43Speaker 2: bigger deficit for the Seahawks than it was. But, Mike
- 31:47Speaker 2: Evans was the only wide receiver of threat, especially after
- 31:50Speaker 2: Devo Samuel went out injured midway through the game. Ricky
- 31:53Speaker 2: Persall's injured. The rookie stripling that they got from Ole
- 31:55Speaker 2: Miss and Washington State injured, not playing. And it was
- 32:00Speaker 2: Mike Evans or bust. And the Seahawks still, I mean,
- 32:03Speaker 2: of any opportunity that you would have had to double
- 32:06Speaker 2: an outside receiver, you would think it would have been
- 32:08Speaker 2: on Sunday when Mike Evans was the only threat against you.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But McDonald didn't want to do it. And we– I
- 32:14Speaker 2: think you asked yesterday, was it ego? Not so much
- 32:17Speaker 2: ego as the way, the style of play he wants
- 32:19Speaker 2: to impart on his team of wanting to dictate to
- 32:23Speaker 2: the offense. But the offense dictated to McDonald. I mentioned yesterday,
- 32:27Speaker 2: this is where Shanahan beat McDonald for the first time
- 32:29Speaker 2: in three games by targeting Josh Jobe. McDonald started the game.
- 32:34Speaker 2: He didn't just stand there and do nothing. McDonald started
- 32:37Speaker 2: the game by having Josh Jobe at right corner outside.
- 32:40Speaker 2: And Evans caught the third down pass in the red zone.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Then he caught the two-yard touchdown pass over Jobe. Then
- 32:45Speaker 2: McDonald moved Jobe to the left side. What did Shanahan do?
- 32:49Speaker 2: He saw it. His coaches upstairs told him 29 is
- 32:51Speaker 2: now at the left corner. Witherspoon's on the right. And
- 32:54Speaker 2: they put Mike Evans on the right side of the
- 32:57Speaker 2: offense against the left side of the defense against Josh Jobe.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And it stayed that way. And McDonald didn't counter to
- 33:02Speaker 2: that counter. He did not want to have Shanahan dictate
- 33:06Speaker 2: to him how he wanted to play defense. We mentioned
- 33:08Speaker 2: yesterday also they did not play a lot of dime.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Only four snaps for Nehemiah Pritchett who earned more. and
- 33:14Speaker 2: deserves more and probably will get more Thursday night. Only
- 33:18Speaker 2: eight snaps for Trevon Diggs, who's now on the 53-man roster.
- 33:21Speaker 2: They made that roster move from the practice squad on Saturday.
- 33:24Speaker 2: So that's only 12 snaps out of the 60 on
- 33:27Speaker 2: defense for the extra corners that they had in the game,
- 33:31Speaker 2: meaning those were the only 12 snaps that Witherspoon was inside,
- 33:34Speaker 2: and they were playing dime with Eamon Worry on the field.
- 33:37Speaker 2: So I think that, to me, was a change-up. McDonald
- 33:43Speaker 2: was trying to show Shanahan because he hadn't shown that
- 33:45Speaker 2: last year. It was all dime and six defensive backs
- 33:48Speaker 2: with Eamon Worry up near the line and Witherspoon in
- 33:51Speaker 2: at nickel.
- 33:52Speaker 3: The Chessers got chest. That's what happened.
- 33:54Speaker 2: He did. He got checkmated on the scheme of not
- 33:58Speaker 2: having Witherspoon inside. I think at Denver and Sean Payton
- 34:00Speaker 2: against the Broncos and Bill Nix on Thursday night, they're
- 34:03Speaker 2: going to go back to what they do best, which
- 34:05Speaker 2: is to go six defensive backs, whether that's Diggs or
- 34:08Speaker 2: it should be Pritchard right now, and Witherspoon inside of nickel.
- 34:12Speaker 2: and will even worry up near the line. And I
- 34:14Speaker 2: think you're going to see a lot more of that,
- 34:16Speaker 2: and you're going to see a lot more than 12
- 34:17Speaker 2: snaps for the extra third corner on Thursday night against Denver. 4-9-4-5-1.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Your reaction and feeling of frustrations to Mike McDonald's answer
- 34:27Speaker 2: on why he didn't double-team Mike Evans as it was
- 34:29Speaker 2: becoming apparent that Josh Jobes was getting picked on during
- 34:32Speaker 2: the game on Sunday by Kyle Shanahan. Up next, we're
- 34:36Speaker 2: going to talk about the Huskies and their quarterback situation.
- 34:39Speaker 2: DeMond Williams. His coach saying probably not going to play
- 34:42Speaker 2: Friday night because of a rib injury at Purdue. Should
- 34:45Speaker 2: he be playing at all? The $ 4 million NIL quarterback,
- 34:49Speaker 2: former Huskies QB Hugh Millen weighs in on that next.
- 34:52Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, Jory Epstein, senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports,
- 34:56Speaker 2: makes her weekly visit with us and going around the league,
- 34:58Speaker 2: including the NFC West, which had a really interesting this
- 35:01Speaker 2: past weekend, including the Marvin Harrison trade we haven't even
- 35:03Speaker 2: talked about from the Cardinals to Houston. Jory will talk
- 35:07Speaker 2: to us at 11, 1135. Jessamyn's pick on our Factor Fiction,
- 35:11Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 35:14Speaker 2: All that's coming up from Seahawks headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Welcome back. Greg Bell and Justin McIntyre with you as
- 35:40Speaker 2: we are every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon on 93.3 KTRFM.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Though I won't be on Thursday, I'll be flying to
- 35:45Speaker 2: Denver Thursday morning for the Seahawks and Broncos game that night.
- 35:49Speaker 2: So Mike Benton, the captain, is going to be here.
- 35:51Speaker 2: It's a Kraken game day on Thursday, and he'll be
- 35:54Speaker 2: hosting the show for me.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Double dutying.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he is double dutying for a Kraken road game
- 36:00Speaker 2: on Thursday. Speaking of the Kraken, don't forget it's a
- 36:02Speaker 2: Kraken ticket Tuesday. We do it every Tuesday. Every hour
- 36:05Speaker 2: you're going to hear... The goal-scoring horn that plays at
- 36:09Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena, the fairy horn, Ann Everett Fitzhugh. When
- 36:12Speaker 2: you hear that, you'll be the 10th caller to text 49451.
- 36:18Speaker 2: When you hear that horn, if you're the 10th texter,
- 36:20Speaker 2: you will win two tickets to the October 22nd home
- 36:23Speaker 2: game against the Utah Mammoth at Climate Pledge Arena on
- 36:26Speaker 2: a Kraken ticket Tuesday. We do it every hour now
- 36:29Speaker 2: all the way up to the Kraken game, 3.30 pregame
- 36:31Speaker 2: with Mike Benton. 4 o'clock puck drop when the Kraken
- 36:33Speaker 2: play The Philadelphia Flyers trying to go 3-0 on a
- 36:36Speaker 2: five-game road trip to Krakenar. The Washington Huskies play on
- 36:40Speaker 2: Friday again for the second consecutive week. This time they're
- 36:42Speaker 2: in West Lafayette, Indiana to play Purdue. DeMond Williams, the
- 36:47Speaker 2: Washington Huskies' $ 4 million NIL quarterback, subject of a tug-of-war
- 36:51Speaker 2: with LSU this past winter. He's struggling, and now he's hurting.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Stanford transfer Elijah Brown is practicing with the ones for
- 36:58Speaker 2: the Huskies, perhaps to start Friday for UW against Purdue.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Brown replaced Williams Friday night when Iowa was just boat
- 37:08Speaker 2: racing the Huskies in the first half. Brown completed 28
- 37:10Speaker 2: of 39 passes for 251 yards, three touchdowns, a little
- 37:13Speaker 2: more than a half, to rally UW, who still lost
- 37:16Speaker 2: their third straight Big Ten game. A former Washington Huskies
- 37:21Speaker 2: quarterback from Roosevelt High School, Hugh Millen, our quarterback one,
- 37:25Speaker 2: thinks there's a quarterback controversy or should be on Montlake.
- 37:28Speaker 10: It could be Elijah Brown's the starter for non-injury reasons.
- 37:32Speaker 2: I think that, meaning.
- 37:34Speaker 10: I don't think Jetfish is going to come up and say,
- 37:37Speaker 10: DeMond Williams is cleared. He's healthy enough to start, but
- 37:41Speaker 10: I'm going to start Elijah Brown. I don't think he's
- 37:44Speaker 10: going to say that. So I think it's either DeMond
- 37:46Speaker 10: Williams is going to start, but I think that he
- 37:51Speaker 10: is going to want to see Elijah Brown, and I
- 37:53Speaker 10: think we're going to be able to– there's enough ambiguity
- 37:56Speaker 10: around the Williams injury– that we can kind of just say, hey,
- 38:00Speaker 10: Eliza Brown's starting because DeMond Williams is not 100% healthy,
- 38:03Speaker 10: and then just let him take the Purdue game and
- 38:06Speaker 10: then assess from there.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Okay, so what did Huskies coach Jed Fish say about
- 38:12Speaker 2: two hours after, three hours after Hugh Millen said that
- 38:15Speaker 2: yesterday on Chuck Powell's morning show about Williams' availability for Sunday,
- 38:19Speaker 2: or for Friday at Purdue?
- 38:23Speaker 8: Is DeMond healthy and clear to play as he starts Friday?
- 38:27Speaker 2: I don't know. That would be.
- 38:29Speaker 9: pretty much of a hypothetical at this point because I
- 38:31Speaker 9: don't envision being at that spot to have to make
- 38:35Speaker 9: that decision. But if he is, then we'll talk about
- 38:38Speaker 9: it as a staff and see how healthy he is.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I don't want setbacks. I don't want a.
- 38:42Speaker 9: Situation where if he barely can make it back and
- 38:47Speaker 9: then we start him and then we wind up losing
- 38:49Speaker 9: him for weeks after that.
- 38:51Speaker 3: So we'll go deal with that at the time.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Like a number of reps or days he needs to
- 38:58Speaker 1: be active this week in practice to feel comfortable starting him?
- 39:02Speaker 9: No, I think right now we're just going to proceed
- 39:05Speaker 9: with Elijah taking the reps today. DeMond can't take any
- 39:10Speaker 9: reps today. Kind of go from there. There'd have to
- 39:14Speaker 9: be a pretty significant change for anything to change there.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Any updates on the severity of X-ray's injury?
- 39:22Speaker 9: X-ray will be out.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Actually I'll be out for a substantial.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Amount of time. Okay, so that sounds like a no.
- 39:30Speaker 2: for DeMond Williams.
- 39:32Speaker 3: It sounded like it to me.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Rib injury, won't play at Purdue. That means it's Elijah Brown.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Who's he? Four-year starter. I read this twice, and I
- 39:39Speaker 2: was like, are you sure? A four-year starter at Mater
- 39:41Speaker 2: Dei High School, a Southern California high school. Four-year starter,
- 39:46Speaker 2: signed with Stanford. He's bigger than Williams. He can see
- 39:49Speaker 2: over the middle from the pocket. He's 6'2 and 215 pounds.
- 39:53Speaker 2: He made one start as a freshman at Stanford in
- 39:55Speaker 2: 2024 against Wake Forest. They lost. Last season, he made
- 39:58Speaker 2: three starts for the Cardinal to end the season, including
- 40:02Speaker 2: the big game against Cal and against Notre Dame as well.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Then he transferred. Brown transferred to Montlake to be, well,
- 40:09Speaker 2: at the time, he might have thought DeJuan Williams was
- 40:11Speaker 2: leaving for LSU. He comes back. And that whole thing,
- 40:14Speaker 2: a $ 4 million NIL deal that the Huskies enforced and
- 40:18Speaker 2: threatened legal action, the Big Ten threatened legal action.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Rightfully so.
- 40:22Speaker 2: To keep DeMond Williams from leaving for the Lane Kiffins
- 40:25Speaker 2: in Baton Rouge. And now DeMond Williams struggling, having trouble
- 40:29Speaker 2: seeing over the line and throwing over the middle. Now
- 40:31Speaker 2: injured with a rib injury and another Friday game for
- 40:34Speaker 2: the Huskies. So here comes Elijah Brown, and it sounds
- 40:37Speaker 2: like he will start on Friday in West Lafayette. Husky fans,
- 40:41Speaker 2: how do you feel about that? turn of events for
- 40:43Speaker 2: your team that's lost three straight Big Ten games heading
- 40:47Speaker 2: into the Purdue game on Friday night. Up next, back
- 40:49Speaker 2: to the NFL. Our weekly visit with Jory Epstein, the
- 40:53Speaker 2: senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. She's based in New York,
- 40:56Speaker 2: but she was all over the NFC West this past weekend.
- 40:59Speaker 2: She has a lot to talk about, including the Marvin
- 41:01Speaker 2: Harrison trade from Arizona to Houston, the 49ers being undefeated.
- 41:05Speaker 2: What does Sam Darnold look like to her and the
- 41:08Speaker 2: people she talks to around the league after his five
- 41:10Speaker 2: interceptions in three games? Jory and her weekly visits up next.
- 41:14Speaker 2: And then 1135 Factor, fixing your chance to win $ 1, 000.
- 41:17Speaker 2: I'm at Seahawks headquarters two days before Seahawks Broncos on
- 41:20Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM.
- 41:34Speaker 1: It's time for Greg's weekly visit with Yahoo Sports senior
- 41:37Speaker 1: NFL reporter Jory Epstein.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Brought to you by Zeke's Pizza.

- 42:47Speaker 3: It's almost like scheduling an Uber.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Exactly. For Thursday night's game, Seahawks Broncos put Pigskin 10

- 43:02Speaker 2: gluten-free pie, which is news to our guest, Jory Epstein,
- 43:06Speaker 2: brought to you by Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com. Good afternoon, ma'am.
- 43:11Speaker 11: Greg, Justin, great to be on with you.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Great to be on with you as well, ma'am. Your
- 43:17Speaker 2: eyes were on the NFC West like much of the
- 43:19Speaker 2: league this past weekend. First of all, let's start with
- 43:22Speaker 2: the trade that happened before the games on Sunday. Marvin
- 43:25Speaker 2: Harrison to Houston, Marvin Harrison and a seventh round pick
- 43:28Speaker 2: to Houston for a second and a sixth, unless I
- 43:31Speaker 2: got that backwards, six and a seventh, but they gave
- 43:34Speaker 2: up a second round pick basically and swapped other late
- 43:37Speaker 2: round picks to trade Marvin Harrison to Houston. Your reaction
- 43:42Speaker 2: to that and how does this help CJ Stroud and
- 43:45Speaker 2: the Texans and are the Cardinals just in full-blown teardown
- 43:49Speaker 2: mode and starting over and being the number one, two,
- 43:52Speaker 2: three pick overall next year.
- 43:55Speaker 11: Yeah, great questions, Greg. And I was at MetLife Stadium
- 43:59Speaker 11: when this trade went down. So I was at the
- 44:00Speaker 11: Browns-Jets game and it kind of went down right, I
- 44:03Speaker 11: guess it was near the end of the game. And
- 44:06Speaker 11: I went to the Jets locker room and talked to
- 44:07Speaker 11: Garrett Wilson, their receiver, because like Marvin Harrison Jr., he
- 44:11Speaker 11: played with CJ Stratton at Ohio State. Both of them
- 44:13Speaker 11: were drafted in the top 10. And I asked him
- 44:16Speaker 11: about it and he was like, I don't know if
- 44:17Speaker 11: I'm allowed to say this, but I was praying that
- 44:19Speaker 11: something happened for him and that he got a fresh start.
- 44:22Speaker 11: And he and a couple of the Ohio State guys
- 44:24Speaker 11: in that locker room were just very excited. I think
- 44:26Speaker 11: when you look at it from a trade value standpoint,
- 44:28Speaker 11: I had talked to executives around different teams in the
- 44:30Speaker 11: league who... really told me that they wouldn't give up
- 44:33Speaker 11: more than a day three pick, so that would be
- 44:34Speaker 11: more of a fourth or fifth rounder for Marvin Harrison. Junior,
- 44:38Speaker 11: I had one team that said anything more than a fifth,
- 44:41Speaker 11: zero chance, and another team that said for a day three,
- 44:44Speaker 11: the value would be there, but they didn't really see
- 44:46Speaker 11: him panning out. I think it's worth contextualizing, though, that
- 44:48Speaker 11: in my opinion, yes, you're worth what the market pays you,
- 44:51Speaker 11: but a player's value to one team is not necessarily
- 44:54Speaker 11: the same as a player's value to another team, both
- 44:56Speaker 11: from the standpoint of what their offense looks like and
- 44:58Speaker 11: from what their personnel looks like. And so to reunite
- 45:01Speaker 11: Marvin Harrison Jr. with CJ Stroud, I think should expedite
- 45:05Speaker 11: his ability to catch up on the offense in the
- 45:07Speaker 11: middle of the season. And I think it's probably the
- 45:09Speaker 11: best chance he has to revive his career. I'm not
- 45:11Speaker 11: sure it will work, but I think it's more likely
- 45:13Speaker 11: to work there than anywhere else. The last thing we
- 45:15Speaker 11: got to note is that this is still a Texans
- 45:17Speaker 11: team that is one in four and trading a second
- 45:20Speaker 11: round pick in the 2027 draft for Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 45:23Speaker 11: You're one in four. You only beat the Titans who
- 45:25Speaker 11: beat nobody. So no one was a win.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Have you beat?
- 45:28Speaker 11: And The 2027 draft is supposed to be really talent
- 45:31Speaker 11: rich and really talent deep. That's why we saw the
- 45:34Speaker 11: Eagles a couple of times recently have trades that involve
- 45:37Speaker 11: picks in 2028 because no one wants to give up
- 45:39Speaker 11: high picks in 2027. So the Cardinals did get better
- 45:43Speaker 11: value than I thought they would be able to get,
- 45:45Speaker 11: even though it was what they wanted. But I'm still
- 45:48Speaker 11: not sure it was worth it for the Texans. We'll
- 45:50Speaker 11: find out.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Yeah, the Texans are still going for it for this year,
- 45:53Speaker 2: but they're 0-3 at home. They've only scored 110 points
- 45:57Speaker 2: in five games, and they're already three games behind the
- 46:00Speaker 2: Jaguars in the AFC South, yet they're going for it.
- 46:03Speaker 2: This is a go-for-it move to try to get back
- 46:05Speaker 2: into it. Three games out, just five games into the season.
- 46:08Speaker 2: All right, so let's stay in the NFC West. I'm
- 46:13Speaker 2: pretty sure after you got done writing whatever you had
- 46:15Speaker 2: to do in the Meadowlands, you got a chance to
- 46:16Speaker 2: look at the Seahawks in the 49ers game and a
- 46:19Speaker 2: wild ending it turned out to be. But what's Sam
- 46:22Speaker 2: Darnold look like to you? Five interceptions in three games
- 46:25Speaker 2: since he's come back from the injury you saw here
- 46:27Speaker 2: in Seattle the very opening night, fifth play of the season.
- 46:30Speaker 2: He doesn't have a running game, at least not one
- 46:34Speaker 2: they can depend on right now like he did this
- 46:36Speaker 2: time last season. Would it be cause for alarm? You
- 46:39Speaker 2: think the league is looking at Sam Darnold like this
- 46:41Speaker 2: is the pre-2025 version of him? Yeah, I don't think.
- 46:45Speaker 11: We reverted all the way there. I did watch that
- 46:48Speaker 11: game also, though, You're just jumping from one thing to
- 46:52Speaker 11: the next. And I think for me, we've seen a
- 46:55Speaker 11: lot of quarterbacks around the league that when they don't
- 46:57Speaker 11: have the running game, I mean, Jordan loves a great
- 46:58Speaker 11: example of this. Things are a lot harder. So if
- 47:01Speaker 11: you look at what Sam did last year, I believe
- 47:04Speaker 11: he had 25 touchdowns to 14 interceptions in 17 games.
- 47:07Speaker 11: He had about 0.82 interceptions per game right now. He's
- 47:10Speaker 11: got five and four. That's 1.25. And two of the
- 47:13Speaker 11: last three games, you take that, you take fumbles around
- 47:15Speaker 11: the team. And those turnovers really are the difference in
- 47:17Speaker 11: these games overall. Um, it's a problem. I think if
- 47:20Speaker 11: you're a defense first team, you don't need your offense
- 47:24Speaker 11: to always be explosive. And I recognize you've got a
- 47:26Speaker 11: guy like Jackson Smith and Jake, but who is an
- 47:28Speaker 11: explosive piece, but you don't need your, your, your offense
- 47:30Speaker 11: to be scoring 30 points every week, but you do
- 47:33Speaker 11: need your offense to kind of ideally control the clock,
- 47:35Speaker 11: which is where the Ryan game comes in. And also
- 47:37Speaker 11: just not turn the ball over and put your defense
- 47:39Speaker 11: in rough situations. Cause then your defense isn't going to
- 47:41Speaker 11: be as fresh and they're not going to be playing
- 47:43Speaker 11: as soundly either. So, I mean, I don't think that
- 47:46Speaker 11: it was a bad game by a team. I think
- 47:48Speaker 11: it was a competitive division game where both teams did
- 47:51Speaker 11: a lot of impressive things and both teams made a
- 47:53Speaker 11: lot of mistakes. But clearly that's not, this level of
- 47:58Speaker 11: giveaways is not a formula for success and not a
- 48:00Speaker 11: formula for making the playoffs.
- 48:02Speaker 2: This is the verse of Joy Epstein. You know her
- 48:03Speaker 2: voice by now. She's on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline every
- 48:06Speaker 2: Tuesday at 11 o'clock. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza, zekespizza.com. Go
- 48:10Speaker 2: to Zeke's pizza.com enter pigskin 10. You'll get $ 10 off
- 48:14Speaker 2: any order. You can preorder it on their app and Monday, Thursday, Saturday,
- 48:19Speaker 2: and Sundays special deals on game day deals at Zeke's pizza.com. Okay.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Staying in the NFC West, Sean McVay last night, he
- 48:29Speaker 2: is marching up and down the field for four quarters.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Plus most of the fifth quarter overtime against the Buffalo
- 48:34Speaker 2: bills defense, which has had problems all year. He gets
- 48:37Speaker 2: inside the 40-yard line, and then he just goes turtle
- 48:41Speaker 2: shell offensively and just plays for the field goal. A
- 48:45Speaker 2: 48-yarder by his struggling kicker, which got blocked. The Bills
- 48:49Speaker 2: go the other way. Josh Allen scramble, field goal, game over.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Rams lose for the third time in five games. Your
- 48:55Speaker 2: thoughts as you were watching. I know what I thought
- 48:57Speaker 2: while I was watching it. This isn't a gimme. Why
- 48:59Speaker 2: is he pulling up on a 48-yard field goal? What
- 49:02Speaker 2: did you think of him? the always innovative Sean McVay
- 49:05Speaker 2: going Woody Hayes with the game on the line last night.
- 49:07Speaker 11: All right. And Greg, I don't know if you said,
- 49:10Speaker 11: but we did just, the Rams did cut the kicker.
- 49:13Speaker 2: I did see that. Their practice squad kicker is now
- 49:16Speaker 2: their new kicker and they got rid of last night's. Yes.
- 49:20Speaker 11: Yes, there were changes that were made. I mean, it's
- 49:23Speaker 11: interesting because on one hand, you want to say put
- 49:24Speaker 11: it on Matthew Stafford all the time. On the other hand,
- 49:27Speaker 11: this build defense looked good. There's so many late game
- 49:30Speaker 11: situations that we saw this week where is it the
- 49:33Speaker 11: decision making or the execution? I'm not saying that Sean
- 49:37Speaker 11: McVay's decision was the right one, but we saw it
- 49:39Speaker 11: in the Philadelphia game. Nick Sirianni's being like, oh, I
- 49:42Speaker 11: made the wrong decision with however many seconds left on
- 49:44Speaker 11: the clock despite making the opposite decision that the Cowboys
- 49:47Speaker 11: made against the Ravens not long ago and had a
- 49:50Speaker 11: problem with too. I mean, you have all these elements
- 49:53Speaker 11: where the coaches are and should be taking accountability for it,
- 49:56Speaker 11: but some of this is the execution. So I think
- 50:00Speaker 11: it's hard for me to totally know, okay, yeah, I
- 50:03Speaker 11: trust Matthew Stafford's arm generally, The calls that they're getting
- 50:09Speaker 11: on DPI, all of these things are so ticky tacky
- 50:11Speaker 11: toward the end of the game that I still trust
- 50:15Speaker 11: Sean McVay in these situations. But I do think that
- 50:18Speaker 11: the Rams are kind of running out of time. I mean,
- 50:20Speaker 11: they've got to go, what, like 10 and two left
- 50:22Speaker 11: to make the playoffs? I know that they're, I think
- 50:25Speaker 11: the Rams right now are the type of team that
- 50:28Speaker 11: if they make the playoffs, and I think they will,
- 50:29Speaker 11: but if they make the playoffs, they'll be arguably the
- 50:32Speaker 11: most dangerous team, especially with Miles Garrett back. But will
- 50:35Speaker 11: they make the playoffs? I'm not sure.
- 50:39Speaker 2: They're not going undefeated, huh? Is that for sure? We
- 50:41Speaker 2: can now put that to bed?
- 50:42Speaker 11: Yeah, that does seem like it's not happening.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Okay, all right. So, yeah, if you missed it, Jory
- 50:47Speaker 2: just mentioned the Rams are moving on from Harrison Mavis,
- 50:50Speaker 2: the kicker last night who missed in overtime, got it
- 50:52Speaker 2: blocked in overtime. Sean McVay is going to bring up
- 50:55Speaker 2: Blake Group off the practice squad, the Jets practice squad,
- 50:58Speaker 2: signing him to the active roster. So there you go.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Already a change from the fallout from last night's Rams loss.
- 51:04Speaker 2: All right, you were in the Meadowlands. And first, before
- 51:08Speaker 2: we leave the NFC West, your quick thought on Dre
- 51:10Speaker 2: Greenlaw's one-game suspension. I thought he might get a couple
- 51:13Speaker 2: more games because of the fact that Ernest Jones wasn't
- 51:15Speaker 2: even in a game and didn't even have a helmet
- 51:17Speaker 2: on when he got headbutted on the sidelines when he
- 51:19Speaker 2: threw Sam Donald out of bounds. Dre Greenlaw, one-game suspension.
- 51:23Speaker 2: He has a history of this is his second NFL
- 51:25Speaker 2: suspension on top of three fines. Do you think that
- 51:28Speaker 2: was just about the right punishment?
- 51:32Speaker 11: Yeah, it's a good question. I definitely thought that there
- 51:35Speaker 11: would be a suspension. I was texting with someone during
- 51:37Speaker 11: the game, essentially saying, I thought it would be one
- 51:39Speaker 11: to two, but they would make it one because he was,
- 51:42Speaker 11: he was qualified from part of this game. So then
- 51:45Speaker 11: you already have one plus. I think that being a
- 51:48Speaker 11: repeat offender doesn't help his case. And I'm actually a
- 51:50Speaker 11: little surprised they said he was appealing it. I don't
- 51:52Speaker 11: know how you win that appeal. I think that, I mean,
- 51:56Speaker 11: Miles Garrett didn't have the exact same incident with and Rudolph,
- 52:02Speaker 11: I think he had like six game suspension. And so
- 52:04Speaker 11: I recognize that this isn't a swing, but you're still
- 52:07Speaker 11: using your helmet against someone not wearing their helmet as
- 52:09Speaker 11: a a weapon. You can't do that. So yeah, I
- 52:13Speaker 11: think that the disqualification was absolutely the right move. I
- 52:16Speaker 11: was a little amused when Fred Warner, after the game
- 52:18Speaker 11: was asked about it and he was like, yeah, the
- 52:20Speaker 11: Seahawks were baiting him, like good on him, good on
- 52:22Speaker 11: them for baiting him. AKA we all know that Dre
- 52:26Speaker 11: Greenlaw is so emotional that you have the chance to
- 52:28Speaker 11: get them to go over the edge and the Seahawks
- 52:29Speaker 11: took advantage of that. So like even the Niners were
- 52:31Speaker 11: kind of begrudgingly respecting what Seattle was able to do.
- 52:35Speaker 11: But I think that it's functionally a one-and-a-half to two-game
- 52:40Speaker 11: suspension with the disqualification. And I think that's fair, but
- 52:43Speaker 11: I think if he does anything else this season, it's
- 52:45Speaker 11: going up.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Baiting. If you throw the quarterback into the other team's sideline,
- 52:51Speaker 2: you're not exactly baiting them. You're demanding them to do something,
- 52:54Speaker 2: and they did. Who do you think is more urgent
- 52:57Speaker 2: Thursday night, the 3-2 Seahawks or the 3-2 Broncos.
- 52:59Speaker 8: In Denver, Joey?
- 53:03Speaker 11: I mean, both teams are pretty urgent, but I would
- 53:05Speaker 11: say that Seattle has not yet had a play-calling change,
- 53:08Speaker 11: and so you probably have fewer stops to pull back there,
- 53:11Speaker 11: also coming off a zero. So I would say that
- 53:14Speaker 11: the Broncos, it's more urgent. I did not.
- 53:19Speaker 11: Missed my attention that D'Amico Ryans in Houston and Sean
- 53:22Speaker 11: Payton in Denver each took back play calling at their
- 53:25Speaker 11: respective sides of the ball before facing the 0-4 Titans
- 53:29Speaker 11: at the time and 0-4 Chargers at the time respectively
- 53:32Speaker 11: and so I think that now you if you're Sean
- 53:35Speaker 11: Payton you won but not very much against the Chargers
- 53:37Speaker 11: team that hasn't won a game and now you've got
- 53:39Speaker 11: to say okay well now I have to call these
- 53:40Speaker 11: plays against the Seattle defense that no one wants to
- 53:43Speaker 11: go against so i would say for the broncos there's
- 53:45Speaker 11: more of a sense of urgency but again from from
- 53:50Speaker 11: the standpoint of what the early season expectations are there
- 53:54Speaker 11: are definitely questions in seattle well.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Sean why did sean payton give up the play calling
- 53:58Speaker 2: to begin with i mean that's his bread and butter
- 54:01Speaker 2: right that's what denver hired him even though he's a
- 54:03Speaker 2: head coach they hired him to be the offensive mind
- 54:06Speaker 2: same with ryan's and do what you do best and
- 54:08Speaker 2: why they hired you know.
- 54:11Speaker 8: Yeah, I'll say a couple things.
- 54:12Speaker 11: I mean, he was going to lose Davis Webb to
- 54:15Speaker 11: an offensive coordinator if not head coaching job if he
- 54:17Speaker 11: didn't give Davis Webb play calling. So I would say
- 54:20Speaker 11: that the Broncos do not want to lose Davis Webb.
- 54:23Speaker 11: I also think there were probably some game management things,
- 54:26Speaker 11: including the AFC championship game, that the Broncos felt like
- 54:29Speaker 11: they could use a little more attention on. And Sean
- 54:32Speaker 11: not calling plays makes a reason not to do that.
- 54:34Speaker 2: So I think that.
- 54:35Speaker 11: That was why, and for D'Amico, I mean, Matt Burke
- 54:37Speaker 11: was one of the best defensive coordinators last year. I
- 54:39Speaker 11: recognize D'Amico had a hand in it, but it was
- 54:42Speaker 11: the same play caller this year was calling plays last
- 54:44Speaker 11: year when they were one of the best defenses in
- 54:46Speaker 11: the league. So I don't think it was crazy that
- 54:48Speaker 11: either one of them weren't. I think that if I
- 54:51Speaker 11: were Sean, I, I, I would have waited until after
- 54:54Speaker 11: the bye to take it back. I think give it
- 54:56Speaker 11: a little more time. You have an insane early schedule
- 54:58Speaker 11: in terms of who you played. It takes time. And
- 55:01Speaker 11: I'm not super into the whole panic is helpful philosophy.
- 55:07Speaker 2: You were in the Meadowlands to watch the Jets beat
- 55:09Speaker 2: the Browns. The Browns kind of gave that what came away,
- 55:11Speaker 2: fumbled it away late in the rain. But you had
- 55:15Speaker 2: David Bailey with three sacks. You could fill in people
- 55:18Speaker 2: on who David Bailey is and his three sacks. And
- 55:20Speaker 2: how's Geno Smith going? for the Jets. How's that working out?
- 55:25Speaker 11: Yeah, David Bailey was their second overall pick in this
- 55:28Speaker 11: year's draft, and he had three sacks a week in
- 55:32Speaker 11: which the Jets sacked Deshaun Watson eight times. And maybe
- 55:35Speaker 11: like a few years ago, that would have made sense.
- 55:36Speaker 11: But Deshaun's actually been pretty mobile in recent games and
- 55:40Speaker 11: escaping some sacks that did not look like a quarterback
- 55:42Speaker 11: should be able to get out of. And then you
- 55:43Speaker 11: have David Bailey, who's got the three sacks, nine pressures,
- 55:46Speaker 11: five quick crash pressures as they're doing that. So I'm
- 55:50Speaker 11: really interested to see what he could continue doing. I mean,
- 55:52Speaker 11: he was a monster at Texas Tech, I believe, level league.
- 55:55Speaker 11: or led the nation in sacks last year at Texas Tech.
- 55:58Speaker 11: And now they're going to face Drake May and the
- 56:00Speaker 11: Patriots this week, where the offense this week Gino's been
- 56:10Speaker 11: fine I mean it's kind of hard to judge when
- 56:12Speaker 11: you have these games where it's raining the entire time
- 56:15Speaker 11: before during and after I would say what they're able
- 56:18Speaker 11: to do is a little trickier so I think that
- 56:21Speaker 11: at the beginning of the game he was playing pretty
- 56:23Speaker 11: smoothly looked good and that's the game went on there
- 56:26Speaker 11: wasn't much from offense on either side so I think
- 56:29Speaker 11: he looks better than he looked in Vegas last year
- 56:31Speaker 11: but he's definitely not currently back to his Seattle.
- 56:33Speaker 2: Levels Have you talked to him and interviewed him? And
- 56:37Speaker 2: if so, how do you find him compared to the
- 56:39Speaker 2: Seahawks version, compared to the Raiders version, compared to the
- 56:42Speaker 2: Jets version, compared to the Giants version, or so on?
- 56:46Speaker 11: Yeah, I was in the locker room. We talked at
- 56:47Speaker 11: this game. But I did sit down with him in
- 56:49Speaker 11: June for a story and talked to him about learning
- 56:52Speaker 11: the new offense with Frank Reich. And really, he was
- 56:55Speaker 11: just so happy to be back with a running game,
- 56:56Speaker 11: back with the semblance of an offensive line. And a
- 56:59Speaker 11: veteran play caller, Frank Reich, who seems a little more
- 57:02Speaker 11: settled than what she was telling me. and Pete Carroll
- 57:05Speaker 11: and their staff were doing in Vegas last year. So
- 57:08Speaker 11: I think it's more functional here, and also their defense
- 57:11Speaker 11: has really picked it up. So, again, the Jets are
- 57:12Speaker 11: not a good team, but they're a much more competitive
- 57:16Speaker 11: team than they were a year ago. And going back
- 57:18Speaker 11: to coaches taking the play calling back, Aaron Glenn taking
- 57:20Speaker 11: this defensive play calling, I would say, has been pretty
- 57:23Speaker 11: effective for this group early on.
- 57:25Speaker 2: Jets are two and three. Jessamyn's Jets are two and three.
- 57:28Speaker 3: All right, Greg, you don't need to rub it in.
- 57:30Speaker 2: No, I didn't say that to start.
- 57:34Speaker 4: I grew up a Jets fan, a Mets fan, and
- 57:37Speaker 4: a Highlanders fan. So, you know, you live in New York.
- 57:40Speaker 3: You get it.
- 57:41Speaker 2: She's a Long Islander. She's a Jets fan. They're ahead
- 57:44Speaker 2: of the Dolphins. Yay! The Dolphins, maybe we should.
- 57:52Speaker 11: And I think right now they're projected to have like
- 57:54Speaker 11: the 9th, 11th, and 12th overall picks in the draft
- 57:57Speaker 11: or something.
- 57:57Speaker 3: Yeah, we're happy about that.
- 57:58Speaker 11: When you get three picks in the top 12, you
- 58:00Speaker 11: should be able to control what you want against the
- 58:02Speaker 11: quarterback you want.
- 58:03Speaker 4: I feel like I'm talking to children when I say this,
- 58:06Speaker 4: and I know that there are people with a very
- 58:09Speaker 4: vast portfolio of professional NFL experience, but I'm like, make
- 58:13Speaker 4: good decisions.
- 58:15Speaker 3: Please make good decisions.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Jory, where are you at this week? What do you
- 58:19Speaker 2: have your eye on in NFO Week 6?
- 58:23Speaker 11: Yeah, this week I will be back at MetLife where
- 58:25Speaker 11: the Saints are coming to play the Giants. We'll see
- 58:27Speaker 11: what Jameis Winston and that crew can do. I'm not
- 58:29Speaker 11: sure if I'll write about it, but I'll at least
- 58:31Speaker 11: be there. I'm also pretty interested. I think the Ravens-Browns
- 58:35Speaker 11: game is low-key pretty relevant to the AFC North battle.
- 58:40Speaker 11: I want to see what Bryce Young can do against
- 58:42Speaker 11: the Eagles. He played great against the Eagles. uh the
- 58:46Speaker 11: the lions last week or i guess two weeks ago
- 58:48Speaker 11: before his bye and so i want to see that
- 58:51Speaker 11: and the last time i'll give you is cowboys packers
- 58:53Speaker 11: it's kind of the referendum actually i'll give you a
- 58:55Speaker 11: few more cowboys packers referendum on the micah parsons was
- 58:57Speaker 11: defense even though micah parsons isn't going to be playing
- 59:00Speaker 11: and then we have teams in the chargers with jim
- 59:02Speaker 11: harbaugh and the commanders of dan clinton both coaches who
- 59:04Speaker 11: are struggling at the moment going to face the chiefs
- 59:08Speaker 11: and niners respectively so new of those are teams you
- 59:11Speaker 11: want to face when you're trying to get back on track.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Real quickly, Brian Schott and I were making some changes
- 59:17Speaker 2: on defense in Dallas. Is that what Jerry Jones is
- 59:19Speaker 2: talking about today?
- 59:21Speaker 11: Yes, Mike Petson, I shouldn't know that pronunciation, is coming
- 59:25Speaker 11: back as a senior defensive assistant. It works really well.
- 59:28Speaker 11: He's worked with Shawty before, I believe with the Jets.
- 59:30Speaker 11: He has worked with Christian Parker when they were with
- 59:33Speaker 11: the Packers. He hired him back in the day. And really,
- 59:36Speaker 11: I don't know why they didn't do something like this
- 59:37Speaker 11: before the season. which is just have a senior voice
- 59:44Speaker 11: for a young first-time play caller Christian Parker will also
- 59:47Speaker 11: be moving from coaching on the sideline to coaching in
- 59:50Speaker 11: the booth so they're pulling out all the stops and
- 59:52Speaker 11: seeming to try and support Christian and what that defense
- 59:55Speaker 11: could do the last thing to note on that is
- 59:57Speaker 11: yes he's a first-time play caller but it's also I
- 1:00:01Speaker 11: think a lot of transition because after 13 odd years
- 1:00:05Speaker 11: the Cowboys transitioned from a four front seven for all
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: these guys. You've got new personnel in there, a new
- 1:00:14Speaker 11: play caller, and a different philosophy than they've been working
- 1:00:16Speaker 11: on for over a decade.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Jory, thanks a lot. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza for having you,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: and we'll have you next week. Thanks a lot.
- 1:00:23Speaker 11: Greg, Jess, and then Zeke. Thanks so much. I'll talk
- 1:00:25Speaker 11: to you next week.

- 1:01:04Speaker 2: our website, 933KJR. com. You'll get a 30-second recording. Shorter voice
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: message on the red microphone button. We'll talk about the Seahawks,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: Sam Darnold concern, the running back situation, what your concern
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: is with the Seahawks. You're a part of the show
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: next from Seahawks headquarters two days before Hawks and Broncos
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: in Denver on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:01:33Speaker 12: This offense seems a lot different than last year's 3-2 offense.
- 1:01:38Speaker 12: So I say, why not give Drew a shot? Hell,
- 1:01:41Speaker 12: give Milrow a shot. This offense is awful. Nothing should
- 1:01:45Speaker 12: be off the table. And yes, when we turn the
- 1:01:50Speaker 12: ball over, we lose. But that's not an anomaly anymore.
- 1:01:54Speaker 12: Look at the last four weeks. We're a turnover team.
- 1:01:58Speaker 12: So we're going to lose games.
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: Hey there, Greg.
- 1:02:01Speaker 13: It's your brother from another Ohio mother. Shout out Dayton Flyers. Now,
- 1:02:06Speaker 13: if these running backs for the Seattle Seahawks are not
- 1:02:09Speaker 13: carrying a football everywhere they go every day like it's
- 1:02:14Speaker 13: a recreation of Remember the Titans, well, what are we doing?
- 1:02:18Speaker 13: You got to be punching that ball out, everybody, trying
- 1:02:21Speaker 13: to get that ball loose throughout the day. That's the
- 1:02:25Speaker 13: only way our running back should be handled this week.
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: Go Hawks.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: They shouldn't have to do that at NFL, right? Ball security.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: I know Thomas Hammock.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: It just reminds me of the program.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Yes, it does. I know Thomas Hammock drills at the
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: running back coach about ball security, the four points of
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: contact your dad talked about. I didn't hear four in
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: the country and five in the city. That's pretty good.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a Bobby Mac special that you got there.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: That was pretty good. Hey, there's a couple things I
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: want to clear up. First, I confused the listeners about
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: it is still calling in for the 10th caller for
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: the Kraken tickets. I think I said texting Meyer. It's
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: been a hell of a week or two.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: You know, Greg, give yourself a little grace.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: 206-286-9595. When you hear the sound of the horn, it
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: never fits you once an hour, every hour now until
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: the Kraken play tonight.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: And we do have two winners from our show.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Who's that? Brian and Paul. Brian and Paul.
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Yes, they are going to the October 22nd game against
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: the Utah Mammoth. And the beauty of that is you
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: still have more chances to win throughout the rest.
- 1:03:40Speaker 11: Of the day.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Right, including the next hour. And the next hour after that,
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Ian Furness' show and the abbreviated Dave Softy Moa show
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: before 3.30, Mike Benton pregame show for the Kraken. And
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: then the Kraken at Philadelphia, they play the Flyers starting
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: at 4 o'clock with a puck drop. The other thing
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: I wanted to mention is while we've been on the show,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: MLB.com is the first to mention that the Mariners are
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: talking to Houston Astros manager Joe Espada about being their
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: new manager. Wow. Espada, of course, was the manager for
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: nine seasons in Houston. He took over. He was the
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: bench coach for Dusty Baker. Then he took over when
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Baker retired in 2023. He's been at the club for
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: nine years, and the Astros have won seven division titles
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: in those nine years. They won the World Series in
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: 2022 when Dusty Baker was the manager and Espada was
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: the bench coach. He's still under contract through the end
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: of October, which is why the Mariners had to get
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: permission from the trash cans to even talk to Espada.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: But MLB.com, the first to report this morning that Joe
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Espada is on the Mariners' list to talk to about
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: replacing Campbell Smith's manager.
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: That's a little bit of this. Sorry, I warranted it.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: It did. How do you feel? Text line 49451. How
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: do you feel about the Mariners taking the trash cans manager?
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Can't beat him, join him from the managerial ranks?
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: Did I ever tell you my Dusty Baker story?
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: I've got a couple, but I haven't heard yours.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: He shook a bag of potato chips out of a
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: vending machine at ESPN for me, along with Chris Berman.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Like tip the machine and slam it around?
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: Yes, yeah.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: So I was very poor, and I would have like
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: $ 2 on me, and I would go get a couple
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: noodles and a bag of baked lays, and that would
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: be my dinner. I was working from 7 p.m. to
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: 2 a.m. So that was my dinner. And so I
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: would go to this vending machine, which was in between ESPN,
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: it's a huge campus, so it was in between radio
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: and SportsCenter. So the SportsCenter guys and Dusty Baker was
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: contributing as an analyst. And Berman saw me go, oh,
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: because my bake lays got stuck. And this is like
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: a $ 1.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: 75 dinner that I'm buying.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: And Dusty and Berman were like, oh, what's wrong?
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: What's wrong? And they just shook it. And both of them,
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: and they're big dudes.
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: And they kept shaking it and trying to get it loose.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: And then Berman finally pulls out a dollar and he
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: buys me two. So then I had two bags of bakelays,
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: which was amazing. But him and Dusty, and I got
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: to tell Dusty that story. retold at the all-star game
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: in 2023. Anyway, I think that's a good story to
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: share because there's good people. Everyone wants to hear the
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: bad things. I like the good ones.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Dusty Baker is one of the best guys I've met
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: in sports. He's from Sacramento, just outside Sacramento. And when
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: I was in Sacramento B to start my career, a
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: lot of Dusty Baker stories I covered him when he was,
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: he was the giants manager, including in the world series
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: against the angels.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Big Dusty.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Just a great dude.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: We are late. We're set to go.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Glad you're with us.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: KJR FM. NFL music again. Jessamyn's got the pick and
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: she's going to pick NFL.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: I am.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: And I'm going to say my pick first because we
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: were a little tardy on that one. I'm going Arizona
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: plus 12 and a half at the Los Angeles Rams.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: And I know that they're going to lose. I just
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: don't think they're going to lose by that much. So
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: Arizona plus 12.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: And a half.
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: Well, the Rams, I'm sorry, the Rams, SoFi.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: Is not exactly like a home field advantage kind of
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: stadium either.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: No, it's not.
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: No, so you usually get three if you're the home team.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: And that means that Arizona getting 12 and a half,
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: that's too wide a margin for me to turn down.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: I just had to do it.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: NFC West, I'm sorry, it doesn't matter how bad or
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: good the teams are within a division, they always play
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: each other harder.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: So, that's my pick.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: I'd give up 22.5 points and take the Rams at
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: this game.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: No, I saw the wide margin, and I'm going.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: If you agree with Jessamyn, Cardinals plus 12.5, meaning you're
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: going to lose by fewer than 12 points.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: By the way, someone did win on a fiction for me.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: Just so you know, you can fiction me.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: You're a full provider.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: I am an equal opportunity loser.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: If you agree with Jessamyn's pick of the Cardinals plus
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: 12.5 at the Rams... Text FACT to 49451. If you disagree,
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: text FICTION to 49451. You have about 11 and a
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: half minutes to do that. Yes, on the text line,
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: I got it. Tech, call in. 206-286-9595 for cracking tickets
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: when you hear the horn and everything. Fitch's call for
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: two tickets to October 22nd against Utah at Climate Pledge Arena.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Call in. I misspoke earlier. Call in.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: Tenth caller wins.
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: And I feel really bad for the people that I
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: have to talk to and tell them they're caller number one.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: The worst one is caller number nine. I'm like, I'm
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: really sorry.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: A couple people on the text line asked me, 49451,
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: we'll get back to the pick, the revisit in a minute.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: They asked me, do I see the NFL legislating out
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: the punch of the football?
- 1:09:29Speaker 12: No.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: I don't either.
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: No.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: They're not going to legislate that out.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: Peanut Tillman invented that.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Keith on the 253 says it's getting out of
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: hand with the amount of punches thrown in the game.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: The reason I don't think the NFL is going to
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: legislate this out is it would be so hard in
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: real time for officials to officiate that.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Well, why is that even illegal? Why should it be?
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: It's not.
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: No, but why should it be? It shouldn't be. There's
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: nothing wrong. This isn't a targeting situation.
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: No.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: No.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: This is real football, and the defense has every right
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: to that ball.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Yes, I agree. I don't think punches at the ball
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: are going to be. It has to be at the ball,
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: of course, but no. It would be so hard to
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: legislate that, and it's an official in real time.
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: Why would it even be legislated?
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: Sorry, I respect the listener who asked, but no, that
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: should never be legislated.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: It's a part of the game.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: There are a couple people on the text line, 49451,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: who think that Drew Locke should be the quarterback.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, there are a couple, yeah.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: You knew you were going to get this, right? Of course.
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: 206.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Yes. In all caps with four exclamation points. I want
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: locked back with three exclamation points. I think Donald was
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: rushed back from his injury and wasn't ready yet. If
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: lock would have started the commander's game, I believe we
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: would have won shoot. If lock had started the 49ers game,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: we like would have won. Drew doesn't turn the ball
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: over like Donald does. What's ironic about that? A chuckle
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: is that drew lock led the league in interceptions as
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: a rookie in Denver in the, then was on track
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: to do it again his second season.
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: He and Sam have had the same pass.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: Very similar pass.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: Not the same, but very, very similar, which is why
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: I think they're a perfect tandem. But I don't think
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: that he should be pressed into starting.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: 206 says, no, Drew shouldn't start, but his coaching staff
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: did try to prove a point by benching the starting
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: running back for avoidable turnovers, so it would only be right,
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: I guess. Difference, of course, being... The cost of doing
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: business for throwing the ball sometimes is interception. Now, not
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: at the rate that Darnold's currently throwing it at, but
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: you don't take it as a cost of doing business
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: running the football, fumbling it as you do throwing the
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: ball and getting intercepted every once in a while. Not
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: five times in three games, mind you, but no. There
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: are a couple people on the text line that are
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: taking issue with what Jed Fish said yesterday in his
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: press conference. He was stating the fact that Washington is
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: at the bottom of the Big Ten in in spending
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: on player rosters for football. First of all, let's just
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: state facts here. The reason why Washington is at the
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: bottom of the Big Ten in spending on players is
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: because they're at the bottom of the Big Ten in revenue.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: They took a half share to join the conference through
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: the end of this decade. That was the agreement that
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: they struck to join the Big Ten. They and Oregon. Oregon,
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: of course, has plenty of outside resources in the money
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: fountain from Phil Knight to augment this. Washington does not.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: Washington has a donor base, frankly, who's split on deciding
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: whether they want to be an academic institution or run
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: with the big dogs in college football the way the
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: rules currently are. And they're trying to do both. And
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: they also have donors who don't just spend their money
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: on football, who have yachts, who are into philanthropy, who
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: will buy their tickets to the symphony or buy their
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: fifth house in Lake Chelan. And that's the difference. This
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: isn't Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge where they're just going to
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: write checks no matter what the football team says and
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: just do it for football. That's not a UW donor.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: And so they're caught. They're in between two worlds here,
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: and they're not mastering the football one for sure. But, yeah,
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: you're going to get outspent when you're at the bottom
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: of the league in revenues in the Big Ten. Thanks
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: for the text.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: Again, my pick, Arizona plus 12.5 against the Rams.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: At the Rams.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: At the Rams.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: If you agree, text FACT to 49451. If you disagree,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: text FICTION to 49451. You have about seven minutes left
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: to do that. Up next, Ian Furness. Tell us what
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: he's got going on next in an abbreviated show. Abbreviated
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: because the Kraken are going to be on your air.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: 3.30 pregame and a 4 o'clock puck drop at Philadelphia
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: against the Flyers. I'll be back here at the Seahawks
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Training Center in Renton next on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Greg Bell at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center Seahawks headquarters
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: where Cooper Cupp and Julian Love just had press conferences
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: this morning. There will be not even a practice, really,
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: just a walkthrough of the game plan today. Dave Softebauer
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: joins us because Ian Furness actually has TV duty. Yes, yes.
- 1:14:11Speaker 8: He's getting his foundation applied before he hits TV this afternoon.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: With that face, it takes a long time.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Don't be mean. Don't be mean.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: What are we, in junior high?
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Don't be mean.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: Okay. Yes, you are clearly.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: In junior high. I'm trying to move through that. Dave
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: Sofdy-Mallers at the Emerald Queen. Don't be mean. I want
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: to ask you, Dave. What did you think of Jed Fish?
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: You were there yesterday for Jed Fish on Montlake.
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: Hey, first of all, time out a second. Can I
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: interrupt you for a minute?
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Is that okay?
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: I'm sorry. I want to say F you to the
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: News Tribune, okay, number one.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Like that.
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm really.
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: Disappointed in that news that came down the other day.
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: I feel for you, man, and I'm glad that you're
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: on our team because the other team over there will
- 1:14:56Speaker 8: suffer without you.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 1:14:58Speaker 8: May they rot in hell and get 1,000 paper cuts
- 1:15:00Speaker 8: covered in lemon juice.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: That's really kind of you. Thank you.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: How's that sound?
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: Zayef Gonorrhea.
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: That's right. Who was the guy in Ace Ventura, the kicker?
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: Dan Marino.
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: No, it was Dan Marino. Dan Marino was the.
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: One that was supposed to rot in hell.
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: That's right. Dan Marino can rot in hell and get gonorrhea.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: That's what I hope happens to the news tribute.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: Whoa. There you go.
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: Let's cut that, by the way.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: For now. Thank you. Sorry. I appreciate the support. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: I am glad to be on your team, so I
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: appreciate that. You were in Motlake yesterday for Jed Fish.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: What did you think? You know Husky fans. You're one
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: of them, and you know the donors. You know the fans.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: What did you think of him even going there about
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: where they are in revenue versus their Big Ten rivals?
- 1:15:44Speaker 8: Yeah, I wish he'd stop talking about it, to be
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: honest with you. And I would tell that to Jed, clearly.
- 1:15:49Speaker 8: I mean, I think it's the middle of the season.
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: There's nothing you can do about it right now. You've
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: got a bunch of guys that are trying to rally
- 1:15:56Speaker 8: and win some games, and I don't think the head
- 1:15:57Speaker 8: coach running around telling the world that his roster isn't
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: good enough to compete in the Big Ten is a
- 1:16:02Speaker 8: good idea. I mean, to me, that's not going to
- 1:16:04Speaker 8: exactly motivate me if I'm a player and you're telling
- 1:16:06Speaker 8: me that I'm a cheap roster compared to everybody else
- 1:16:09Speaker 8: that's on our schedule. So, I mean, I think that
- 1:16:12Speaker 8: there are realities about what Jet Fish is talking about
- 1:16:15Speaker 8: that are entirely accurate, but I also think that there's
- 1:16:18Speaker 8: a time and place for it, and I think the
- 1:16:20Speaker 8: middle of the year when you're 0-3 in the Big Ten.
- 1:16:23Speaker 8: Isn't the time to be doing it. I mean, you know,
- 1:16:25Speaker 8: have that conversation over the offseason. Now, I do get
- 1:16:27Speaker 8: it in some ways because the athletic report came out, what,
- 1:16:30Speaker 8: about three weeks ago, Greg? And I actually asked him
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: about that when that report came out. But this is becoming,
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: in my opinion, for my liking and my taste as
- 1:16:39Speaker 8: a Husky fan, way too big of a conversation on Montlake.
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: I mean, you know, look, guys.
- 1:16:44Speaker 8: I mean, we got a big-ass game against Purdue on Friday.
- 1:16:47Speaker 8: They just ran the ball for 300 yards down Minnesota's friggin' throats.
- 1:16:50Speaker 8: And I don't like the head coach talking about how
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: little we're spending on our roster before we go on
- 1:16:55Speaker 8: the road and try to take on another Big Ten
- 1:16:56Speaker 8: football team, and we're desperate for a win. So I'd
- 1:16:59Speaker 8: like to see it go away, but I also think
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: that there's a conversation there that obviously has to be
- 1:17:04Speaker 8: had at some point. I'm just not sure if now
- 1:17:06Speaker 8: is the time to have it, especially from the head coach.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Do you think in their heart of hearts, brain of brains,
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: in Graves Hall and up on upper campus, that they
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: wish they– not left for the Big Ten and tried
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: to do something to keep it going.
- 1:17:17Speaker 8: No, because I think that there's going to be a
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: Super League formed at some point between the SEC and
- 1:17:21Speaker 8: the Big Ten, and I think Washington wants to be
- 1:17:23Speaker 8: a part of it. I mean, look, this is just,
- 1:17:25Speaker 8: to me, I'm kind of done being annoyed by it
- 1:17:29Speaker 8: because I think it's just common sense. I think people
- 1:17:31Speaker 8: bring these things up on the air, and they bring
- 1:17:34Speaker 8: them up on social media, that it was USC-UCLA goes first,
- 1:17:41Speaker 8: and then Colorado was taken off. This was going to
- 1:17:43Speaker 8: be a completely different conference and a conference that would
- 1:17:46Speaker 8: have been on the outside looking in. There would have
- 1:17:48Speaker 8: been a huge party happening in college football in Washington
