- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, SHAWNA. So we have essentially twelve days with schools
- 0:04Speaker 1: starting today. They're pretty much in Game week, although they'll
- 0:07Speaker 1: do a little bit of unusual stuff this week before
- 0:09Speaker 1: they get into Classic Game Week. But I have to
- 0:12Speaker 1: ask you about this idea that we assign digital single
- 0:15Speaker 1: digit numbers. Now, I think it's a gimmick. Tell me
- 0:19Speaker 1: what this means and how this makes us better and
- 0:22Speaker 1: will this result in wins?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's something that Matt Rule has done since his
- 0:27Speaker 2: Temple days, where the players all vote for who they
- 0:31Speaker 2: feel are like the ten toughest, kind of most deserving
- 0:35Speaker 2: guys that represent what they want the program to be.
- 0:38Speaker 2: And he brought it with them here, and you know,
- 0:41Speaker 2: four of the numbers are already occupied. One of them though,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, Bits and Shavers got a couple of years
- 0:48Speaker 2: ago because I believe it was Jamari Butler didn't want
- 0:52Speaker 2: or he didn't want, they switched numbers, so he took
- 0:55Speaker 2: over number nine one. So that was always something Huscar
- 0:57Speaker 2: fans brought up, like, well, a guy can switch with
- 1:00Speaker 2: one of them, but he I think he ended up
- 1:02Speaker 2: actually earning one the next year. But yeah, there's six
- 1:05Speaker 2: of those available numbers left the figure Anthony Owen Chambells
- 1:10Speaker 2: is going to get one, maybe Anthony Calandria and whatnot.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But you know, I think if you're winning and things
- 1:16Speaker 2: are rolling, people are like, it's pretty cool. But obviously
- 1:18Speaker 2: the way last year, any Husker fans don't like anything
- 1:22Speaker 2: right now, but until as winning games.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you know the idea, it's you know, there's there's
- 1:28Speaker 1: a fine line between promoting uniqueness in the program because
- 1:33Speaker 1: that's a recruiting tool and doing gimmicks to get people
- 1:36Speaker 1: to think things are what they aren't. Uh, And I
- 1:39Speaker 1: guess I'm okay with that. If the players vote on it.
- 1:41Speaker 1: The players vote, they're the ones who decide, Okay, this
- 1:44Speaker 1: guy over here has been killing it in practice. This
- 1:46Speaker 1: guy over here is really really leading in the weight
- 1:48Speaker 1: room and offseason conditioning, and that's the kind of person
- 1:51Speaker 1: we want to follow into battle. But they also assigned cappains,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and it used to be the players voted on captains,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and that process has sort of have been hijacked over
- 2:01Speaker 1: the years. Sometimes we let the coaches decide. Sometimes they
- 2:04Speaker 1: decide on a week to week basis, And I guess
- 2:07Speaker 1: captains are going to get chosen this week. Are the
- 2:08Speaker 1: players voting for them or is this a coach call.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's actually not yet determined if they're going to
- 2:14Speaker 2: have captains permanent captains. And it's kind of the new trend,
- 2:19Speaker 2: not the nutriment, but people have gone this direction now
- 2:21Speaker 2: more that you just let you do week to week captains.
- 2:25Speaker 2: You let things play out. I mean, perfect example, last year,
- 2:27Speaker 2: markis Buford was a captain, Dylan Royle obviously was a captain.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Dan Key, who kind of fizzled off as the year
- 2:34Speaker 2: went on, was a captain who was not a captain.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Emma Johnson who had this team late in the year
- 2:41Speaker 2: on the field. So sometimes you can trap yourself, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: anointing a guy as a captain before the war starts
- 2:49Speaker 2: and then you know, you get into the season and
- 2:52Speaker 2: things changed a little bit. So Matt Ruhle said last
- 2:55Speaker 2: year was the first time in his coaching career that
- 2:57Speaker 2: he has ever elected Seaton long captain. You know who
- 3:01Speaker 2: doesn't do that, Indiana. Indiana doesn't do they did, They
- 3:04Speaker 2: do it week to week and you know, for you know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: for Mano Mendozo was a transfer so you didn't really
- 3:09Speaker 2: get to know him, but that by midyear you realize
- 3:11Speaker 2: this guy is the leader of our team. So I
- 3:13Speaker 2: would not be surprised if they just go back to
- 3:15Speaker 2: the week to week captain format this year.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and in the year twenty twenty six. That seems
- 3:20Speaker 1: like the way to go because in the olden days,
- 3:23Speaker 1: when the players elected a captain, it was always a
- 3:26Speaker 1: fifth year senior or a three year starter, or somebody
- 3:29Speaker 1: that had been through the battles and had delivered through
- 3:33Speaker 1: the battles, and you never really, you never really had
- 3:36Speaker 1: a problem with them because they truly deserved it and
- 3:39Speaker 1: they wore that in like a you know, like a
- 3:42Speaker 1: badge of honor, and that was always sort of important.
- 3:44Speaker 1: In the fourth quarter of tight ballgames. What about the scrimmage?
- 3:48Speaker 1: Give us your impressions of what you got out of
- 3:51Speaker 1: the scrimmage from the players and coaches.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred and ten plays. And now they roll
- 3:56Speaker 2: in the regular school mode. Now classes begin to day.
- 4:00Speaker 2: They'll introduce Ohio Prep starting Thursday this week, so we'll
- 4:04Speaker 2: have you know. They're back to the afternoons too. They're
- 4:06Speaker 2: not going to do morning practices anymore. That eight years
- 4:09Speaker 2: and mornings are over. They're they're switching back to the
- 4:12Speaker 2: afternoon practices starting this week with classes beginning. But it
- 4:16Speaker 2: was a clean scrimmage. I think turnovers were not an issue.
- 4:19Speaker 2: According to Matt Rule again that these things are highly
- 4:23Speaker 2: closed down. I mean parents aren't even allowed in any
- 4:25Speaker 2: more of the players to watch, so it you know details.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Matt Rule has done a very good job of kind
- 4:32Speaker 2: of keeping a very toned down approach just when speaking
- 4:36Speaker 2: about this football team. And you know what he saw
- 4:39Speaker 2: in the scrimmage. I mean you just didn't get a
- 4:41Speaker 2: whole lot out of him Saturday as far as the
- 4:44Speaker 2: fine details.
- 4:45Speaker 1: All right, Seana, we'll talk to you on Wednesday, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: then we'll have every day Huskarbas reports starting on Monday,
- 4:50Speaker 1: but Monday, Wednesday, Friday for the rest of this week.
